(00:00):
Welcome into the Oh Show on iHeartRadio. My name is Paul James.
I am joins once again by CoachA. J. Pratt. And it's
gonna be interesting talking to coach Pratttoday because he used to be the offensive
coordinator, you know w KU.That's gonna be interesting. I was never
the offensive coordinator at WKU. Oh, but I was at Kenton and Kent
State. Okay. I cooked thetackles and tight ends there at w KUH.

(00:25):
That's that's an interesting story for anothershow. We'll get there one of
these days though. But yeah, you got your Brown's shirt on with pride.
I got my I got my IndiansBrown's combo shirt on today. I
just it's kind of funny because youknow, I'm kind of dressing down.
I'm no offense, but I justkind of got up today and went to
work. We got a lot offootball to go to. We do have

(00:48):
a lot of football and this prepI mean, I'm on little sleep here
because this is like a short gameweek. This is like when you play
on Sunday and you're the Thursday nightgame of the week. Yeah, so
here we are on a Wednesday,so everybody's gonna get the show about twenty
four hours earlier. Yeah, butI was going to read this to you.
Our son's a huge Browns fan becausehe grew up with Josh Cribbs at

(01:08):
the house and practice, so heinstantly became a Browns fan when Josh was
a Brown But he sent this tome on Sunday. If I can find
it, maybe not, Oh,here it is. It's it's a young
man looking in the mirror pointing youwill not let the Cleveland Browns dictate your
happiness this year. This is correct, This is correct. I can't tell

(01:30):
you how many times I've said Iwill not let the Cleveland Browns ruin my
Sunday again. Well, I've saidthat a lot. We got to get
to college football, but I willsay we You and I just talked about
watching them. The Cowboys and theforty nine Ers look to me to be
the cock of the walk. InWeek one, I'll tell you what,
the Browns had the most complete gameI've seen him play in a very long

(01:52):
time, and I'm encouraged after Weekone. And of course when you play
the Steelers, it's always difficult. That'll be Monday night, but they don't
have a whole lot of offense. So I feel pretty good about about the
possibility of my fellas going to andoh but that'll be fun. Coach,
let's dig right into it. Youknow. Obviously the big story in college
football continues to be the Colorado Buffalos, but boy, Texas is kind of

(02:15):
coming in as a close second. What are your thoughts last weekend that that
Texas team looks good? Queen Yourslooks like Heisman Canaida, doesn't he Yeah,
we'll get to that game. Youknow, it's again the show is
coach Prime, I mean, ShdorSanders. The game he played Travis Hunter
is again how long can he playthat many reps and snaps in a game?

(02:36):
We'll see and doing them both verywell. If I told you three
weeks ago, hey, hey,Paul, college game Day is going to
the Colorado Colorado State game. Yeah, yeah, you would have thought I
had really lost my marbles, butit's happening. Texas was impressive that road
win at Tuscaloosa, and they alittle more detail about the game here in

(02:57):
a few minutes, but they beatthem, They beat them, They won
the line of scrimmage on both sidesof the ball, and Queen Yours was
a cool cat they look really wellcoached. And then the Pac twelve eight
ranked teams in the Pac twelve andpick them. Yeah, I mean,
do you like Washington? Do youdo you like usc do you like Oregon?

(03:21):
I mean, we can go allthe way down to Oregon State,
Washington State with the win this weekover Wisconsin. The last thing is is
something that I've seen that's Ernie Adamsand I have the same opinion on this.
The SEC out of conference success hasnot happened this year at all.
And the dominance of the front four, front seven on defense in the SEC

(03:47):
has always been the best, thehighest standard in college football. No one
can argue that, right, andthey're they're not in these games, uh
doing that. I mean Texas,Alabama, A and M going to Miami
and I can keep giving examples, but that's the power of the portal.

(04:09):
Yeah, my opinion, Ernie's opinionis these players can't get stockpiled in Tuscaloosa.
Now. We're gonna find out moreabout Georgia the next few weeks,
but other than them right now,the dominance if we're not seeing it early
on, and I do think that'sbecause the players have started to spread out

(04:30):
they're going to other places and that'swhy you're seeing things that we're seeing in
the Pac twelve, especially with thequarterback playte It's been fun. In a
couple of weeks when Colorado plays uscthe matchups are going to be really epic
in that game. And we'll getto that when we get to that part
of the season as well. Butthat's coming up in just a few minutes.
Coach, to talk about the Buckeyes. You know, they started fast

(04:53):
to get the Penguins. They lookedlike they were really really charged up,
almost like they had, you know, a week of practice where they were
just being guys. You're being disrespected, go out and show them what you
do. They started fast, theoffensive line had some bad penalties, but
then they fizzled out in the secondhalf thirty five to seven the final.

(05:14):
Obviously you'll win, you'll win big, but there are some issues. What
are your thoughts right now in theBuckeyes, Well, a couple of things.
One, before it was announced thisweek, it was pretty obvious the
calm accord is their guy. Youknow, Devin Brown is athletic, but

(05:35):
it looks like the offense, especiallyin the past game, is at a
higher level with Colm McCord, andthey felt that they needed to announce that,
and which I agree. I mean, hey, you've earned it,
it's your job. This team needsto know who their starting quarterback is.
They could care less about the fans. It's about the team. But yeah,

(05:56):
I mean in this game that theytook the training wheels off, which
I thought if they would do inthis game, they let him open it
up. They took took shots thatwe're used to seeing in the Ryan Day
or era. Uh, you know, seventy percent completion, three touchdowns,
Kyle McCord doesn't turn the ball over. But we also talked about this last
week. This could not happen again, and it was obvious it was not

(06:17):
gonna happen again. Was the touches? Yeah, it's not the play,
it's who who And we saw it. Marvivin Harrison Junior obviously seven receptions,
one hundred and sixty yards, twotouchdowns. What's important about those numbers?
You're averaging twenty three yard per touch. Yeah, Igmica at Bucca five catches
for ninety four yards one touchdown. Why is that important? That's right?

(06:40):
At nineteen yards a touch, that'sthe stuff we're used to see him from
the Buckeyes and explosion plays. Weknow we have a wealth of backs at
O High State. Travion Henderson runpast touches of seven for seventy four yards
two touchdowns. So there's a runningback almost eleven yards per touch. So
that's a big deal. But payattention. You already said it. Seven

(07:02):
second half points still to be determinedat the offensive line, which you've already
brought up, especially at offensive tackleand third down again, yeah, third
down again. The buck Eyes arefive of twelve against total respect. But
you're playing an FCS opponent who's hadits best year in a while with seven

(07:27):
wins last year. And again thebuck Eyes not getting two fifty percent on
third down. And I'll hit onthat at the end. It's not really
the third and mediums that's the problem. It's been the third and shorts.
Yeah, and that, in myopinion, goes back to the line play.
Well, if you if you've beenfollowing the NFL since things started,
there's spend so much talk about thequarterback play, obviously with what happened on

(07:53):
Monday night with Aaron Rodgers search spendso much talk about, you know,
teacher quarterbacks that when they have totuck it and run. Realize if it's
first down slide with three yards togo, and then you get second or
third and short, you know youwant to get that third and short.
So there's been so much talk aboutthat in Ohio. Status put themselves into

(08:15):
third and short situation, but theyhaven't been able to convert. That's a
major problem. It is, andit goes to the offensive line execution because
typically on third and short, percentagesare you're running the rock, especially if
you think you outman your opponent,or some sort of play action. Typically
depending on the opponents, sometimes youtake it's a shot play to break tendency.

(08:37):
But the other thing is is wheneverwe struggled on third down as an
offensive coach, an offensive coordinator, and you go back and look at the
game, you have to worry ifyou had the right calls for those third
down situations. Right, Maybe I'mnot putting the guys in the best position
to have success. Maybe we needto be looking at doing a couple other

(08:58):
things on third down. But doyou want to talk about the defense?
Yeah, here here's the good news. It The number one thing for me
on defense is points. So it'sreally, it's all matters. Ten points
and two weeks plus plus. Ithought some good play at linebacker Ikenberg and
still Chambers. I you know fromwhat I've seen watching the game a couple

(09:20):
of times the corner back play,Uh Davis and I'm gonna screw the last
name up Igbnissen Yeah. Uh.And Denzel Burke sunny styles week two,
seeing him make a couple more playsin space. And I like the interior
right now of the defensive line withMichael Hall, Ty Hamilton and ty Leak

(09:41):
Williams. Now here's my concerns aftertwo weeks last season, two weeks Jim
Noles sells out in pressures. Yeah, and that's when we've seen in games
where they give up explosion plays wherethey get caught, they don't get home
and they get thrown over the top. We've seen one take a way in
two games. And lastly, whyasu defense created more I think it was

(10:09):
four negative plays. The Ohio StateBuckeyes had three negative plays created against Youngstown
State. So those are things thatwe need to continue to look at.
But special teams again A plus,Jaden Fielding's perfect through two games as a
place kicker, and they did cleanup coverage that we saw a couple longer
returns at IU that you didn't seethat this past week. The only thing

(10:31):
I'm waiting to see. It's beenwhile since you've seen egg Bucca make a
play in the return game and alwaysgot the talent. Yeah, and Indiana's
got a returner and when you lookat the two, there's been some conversation
about that. You know, howcome this guy at Indiana did so well
but a Mecca egg Buca hasn't donea whole lot. Well, there's two
different things. Ohio State has anexplosive offense, I can score well,

(10:56):
you don't really need that, whereasIndiana probably needs that guy to catch that
football on a kick and maybe makesome yards and get them in good field
positions. So that obviously plays ina little bit. He's going to get
some touchdowns this season. There's nodoubt about it. He's he's very good.
We'll talk about the Buckeyes game comingup with Western Kentucky coming up in

(11:16):
just a few minutes. Right now, we want to hit on some of
the key games that happened in Weektwo. Coach we already talked a little
bit about it. Texas thirty fourAlabama twenty four. How big of a
loss is this for Alabama? Istill think they can accomplish everything they want,
but it's a big loss. Well, a couple of things. You
know, college football brings out witha passion an overreaction. Yeah, and

(11:43):
what I mean by that is it'sthe end of the world if our team
loses. Now. I'll get intothe details of this game here in a
second, but one thing that you'renever not going to have it, but
the rankings at the beginning of afootball season where this is what we think
they are because of who they werelast year and who they're bringing back.

(12:05):
I mean, it's a total projection, absolutely, And you know this year's
teams, like every team's different, even if they got a lot of the
same guys back there. We wentthrough this before on the show. There's
a thousand things that can make thisteam different from last year's even with high
expectations. But it is very impressivethat Texas at Bryant Denny Stadium win a

(12:28):
fourth quarter twenty one to eight, put the game away by not giving the
ball back in the fourth quarter andfour minute offense. Quin Yours cool hand
luke Man three hundred and fifty yards, three touchdowns, zero turnovers. He's
changed his body, sounds like he'schanged his life, his focus. You

(12:48):
know, the battle of the quarterbacksis the concern of many prognosticators and fans
was what would Jalen Milroe do?And you know, two hundred fifty five
yards is one hundred less than Quinnyours a touchdown less throwing. But the
big number was was the two turnoversand the concern of what he can do
in the dropback game. But look, Texas is d five sacks, nine

(13:11):
tackles for the loss to Alabama's zerosacks and only two tackles for the loss.
That's up front and executing the offense. Again, I've already said Texas
went up front on both sides. But here's the concern for coach Saban after
all of the penalty problems a yearago. They don't take the ball away,

(13:33):
they give it away twice, butthey are penalized ten times in that
game. You're not going to bethe team the caliber at home or not
as good as Texas. Yeah,Sarks got himself a team. They've got
they've got dudes, and they arecoached. Yeah, and the ranking of
them currently in second on some ofthe polls. Not a surprise to me.

(13:56):
What's at the Paul, give youcredit. We'll see if they keep
rolling. That was your pick beginningin our preseason. I like them.
I think I think Texas is asgood as anybody that we've seen in a
long time. Maybe there this year'sLSU from the Joe Burrow years, and
that would be odd to having twoformer Ohio State quarterbacks win a national championship
within what five years of each other? But who knows. We'll see a

(14:18):
lot of football left to be played. Notre Dame beats North Carolina State forty
five to twenty four. The Irishoffense coach seems legit. Well, look
Notre Dame on the road at atough place to play against a good NC
State defense, scoring forty five points, winning by twenty one. They bring
balance, they do. I meanthey run the rock estimate I think maybe

(14:41):
the leading rusher in the country rightnow and Sam Hartman two eighty six,
four touchdowns, zero turnovers. Imean they got a quarterback and then NC
State's inability to run the ball andthe three turnovers are costly. But the
next game getting tied up for theBuckeyes after WKU, you better bring it.

(15:01):
Yeah, they're gonna have to bringit. We'll talk a lot about
that obviously a week from from fromnow. It's gonna be a lot.
Utah beats Baylor twenty to thirteen.Coach Baylor is, I mean, put
up a fight, but I'm surprisedyou tied didn't score more points. Well,
they're still playing without Cam Rising, correct, And this was a like

(15:22):
a we gotta win this game athome for Dave Randon and their staff and
kids because they're they're on the strugglebus going back an entire season last year
and there hasn't been many victories thererecently. But look, the Utes gutted
it out. I mean this gamewith two late touchdowns I think in the
last two minutes both teams obviously becauseBlake Shaping didn't play low scoring game,

(15:46):
missing their starting quarterbacks and saw yourRobinson the transfer throws the two i nts
that are costly to help you tallget back in the game. Baylor's lack
of run game made for long thirddowns. That's why they were three hit
eleven on third down. Baylor wasnegative one in turnovers and one score game
that's a big deal. And ifyou didn't watch the controversial last play,

(16:07):
the penalty that was not there wasno flag on their affearence in the end
zone for Baylor with the chance tocome back. I had a lot of
people full of this, a littlebit of her. Yeah, coaches,
Uh, it's Colorado as good aswe think they are. Thirty six fourteen.
They blow out in Nebraska, arethey for real? Well, Nebraska

(16:32):
struggles offensively bad, but I wantto give credit to offensive coordinator Sean Lewis,
who was the head football coach atKent State. What's amazed me is
not is how they look. Theydon't beat themselves, but you look at
the offensive skill set between Shader Sanders, Dylan Edwards, Xavier Weaver, obviously,

(16:56):
Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horne junior nowgoing forward and by the way,
Shuder Sanders has nine hundred yards passingthe two games. The concern is is
the run game is at some pointsomebody's gonna make him run the ball.
And thirty three yards rushing for fiftyeight that's one point eight per carry.

(17:18):
That ain't gonna get it done againstOregon and USC and it's not. So
they have to find a way tobe more successful running the football. The
Nebraska's defense kept him in the gamefor about two and a half quarters.
They did. But I don't liketo say this because he's still a kid,
but the struggles of Jeff Simms cannotbe over exaggerated. It's not just

(17:41):
one interception and two fumbles. It'sdecision making, it's management of the game.
And they're four or thirteen on thirddown and you ain't beating very many
people when you turn the ball overfour times. So yeah, another good
look for Colorado looking to probably beat three and Ozero, and another tough
loss for the Nebraska corn Huskers coach. The Fighting Lane Kiffins are legit thirty

(18:03):
seven twenty. They beat two Laneand they won that game going away.
You know one thing I hate, and you would hate competitors hate, is
when you're in a big game, which was possibly two Lane's biggest game at
home maybe ever, and they haveto scratch their starting quarterback and Michael Pratt
yea and still stay in the game. But this is a really good road

(18:23):
win for ole Miss. Willie Fritzreally coaches his team well, but Ole
Miss dominates the fourth quarter after TwoLane dominated defensively in the first half.
I mean, Lane Kiffins said,I have no answers right now, what's
going on? That problem blocking movement? But quarterback Jackson Dart solid day,

(18:45):
Ole miss overcame an abysmal third downday was some second half explosion place.
Yeah, the best team in Americawas zero offensives Iowa. They beat Iowa
State twenty to thirteen. They couldn'tscore on you and me, couldn't they
Well, you know it's in thecontract if they don't average twenty five points
a game. Yeah. So,right now there's one hundred and thirty three

(19:07):
teams in America, and right nowIowa is tied for one hundred and twenty
fifth Wow and yards per play.Okay, And here's the thing. Don't
let it fool you. There's beendefensive scores in these games where they're not.
I was got twenty, but oneof them was a defensive touchdown.

(19:29):
Yeah, and a big fourth nowstop by Iowa d to seal this win
again. Note one Iowa defense oftouchdown. The worst power of five yards
per play in O two or twentytwo was Iowa. As of today,
the worst power of five yards perplay is Iowa Kay McNamara struggled a little

(19:51):
bit twelve of twenty two, one, twenty three and a pick. Here's
the thing that's frustrating, just asa fan of the game. Iowa's defense
is tremendous. They are, They'vealways been coached, and their special teams
are and have been tremendous. Whythey can't fix that one piece. It's

(20:14):
robbing them maybe of a Big tentitle shot. Yeah, but one thing
again, if they're well coached bythe head coach and that staff that zero
penalties. When you have zero penaltiesin a game, you've done a heck
of a job. If your offensedoesn't support your defense at some time in
the season done the defense, justsay why are we doing I've been part
of it. Yeah, I've beenpart of it. There's no question.

(20:36):
I have no idea. I haven'tasked anybody at Iowa, but I've been
on a staff where one side ofthe ball was dominant, one was not
and not and that creates conflict andit absolutely can't. Yeah, I just
I don't know how they keep doingit. I tell you, we got
some football team at the U fortyeight to thirty three. They beat Texas

(20:56):
A and M. My question withMiami beating Texas saying, is Jimbo the
problem and is this a major problem? Well, here's the good thing about
Miami. They overcame fourteen oh deafass. I think it was at the
beginning of the game, and theykept on fighting and believed overcoming a slow

(21:17):
start. Big play in that gamewas brochard Smith's ninety eight yard touchdown return.
Miami offense. They have built anoffense around Tyler van Dyke, who
was incredibly impressive three seventy four orfive touchdowns, zero picks. I really
like Xavier Rostreppo. Reminds me ofJulian Edelman the way he plays on the
perimeter. Jacoby George five catches, three touchdowns, big day. Actually,

(21:44):
now the wick just got turned upat for Jimbo. Yeah, I don't
I don't know how how he keepshis jobby. It seems like he's the
problem. Well, here's the thingTexas A and M offense. It wasn't
great, but it was good enough. But the returnovers. But they look
like they have a better future offensivelythis season with what we're seeing. Paul.

(22:07):
The defense was not good, alot a lot of mistackles, forty
eight points given up by Texas,A and M. Now give credit to
Miami. I think they have achance to win a lot of games,
but the problem was the defensive sideof the ball for the most part.
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting. How do you win recruiting wards for two
years in a row and you stillcan't win any games. Cincinnati goes to

(22:30):
Pittsburgh and wins twenty seven twenty one. This was an exciting football game.
Yeah, Scott saderfield his staff twoand oh with the road, his first
road win at Cincinnati. Fast startfirst half was good for them. Running
Back Corey Kiner had a great daytwenty rushes, one fifty three and a
touchdown. The problem for pitt theycould not run the ball, So give
Cincinnati defensive credit because of that. They were off schedule with a lot of

(22:55):
offensive negative plays that got them intosome third lungs that they couldn't convert.
The Sooners got themselves into another rivalrygame. Oklahoma wins big twenty eight to
twelve over SMU. It seems likeOklahoma is really good right now. Yeah,
Oklahoma is good. But I tellyou what this was. If you
didn't watch this game, this wasa battle. It was really two costly
SMU turnovers that helped Oklahoma get thisvictory. You know, the Preston Stone

(23:19):
interception, the running back jail andKnighton's fumble. But SMU fought their tailoff.
Obviously. It was good to seeanother good performance by Dylan Gabriel.
They're obviously better, much better footballteam with him pulling the trigger for Oklahoma.
He took care of the ball, didn't turn it over, had four
touchdown passes in The Oklahoma run gamewas another key in the game, as

(23:42):
Terree Walker had a good day withone seventeen coach. We know the Cardinal
isn't very good, but USC beatsome fifty six to ten. Caleb Williams
is unreal. I mean he reallyis. Here's the thing. The first
quarterback I'm bringing up as Miller Moss. Do you know who Miller Moss is.

(24:03):
That's the backup to Caleb Williams becausehe was eleven for fifteen and twelve.
Yeah, so it h Lincoln Rileycalled the dogs off. But Caleb
Williams, who was pulled out wisely. He threw two incompletions. Paul Yeah
nineteen of twenty one two eighty onethree touchdowns, and when Mario Williams was
your in this game, their seventhleading wide receiver. You know, I

(24:29):
love Branch. I mean he iselectric. Yeah, in fact, I
think maybe a little bit of acomparison. I'm not gonna go there yet.
We'll wait to see what has twoweeks week and two. I know
where you're going because I haven't onmy notes too. USC offense five seventy
three defense, which is really goodnews. They did this last year though
they take the ball away, soyep, they finally played defense. But
we know Stanford isn't very good.North Carolina forty appy State thirty four,

(24:53):
two overtimes, a thriller down inuh down Carolina. How fun. The
biggest battle of the week was betweenMac Brown and the NC Double A.
And I don't understand. It's supposedto be about the kids. Yeah,
when you when you have schools sayingand every school involved with this kid has

(25:15):
said, hey, we're fine, yeah let him. I'll get I'll get
off of that for now. Butthat I can understand. But they're making
both sides, are making people anational audience with how this is. Battle
is going back and forth. ButI that tells you the most important thing

(25:37):
to Mac Brown is what it shouldbe and that's the players, right.
But yeah, you, you andC miss is a field goal to win
the game. Then they went upto getting a big fourth down stop to
secure it. Uh, praise youand C's defense last week. Then they
give up five hundred yards. SoJean Chizick had a great first week.
He's probably wasn't very happy about this, but you NC finds a way.

(26:00):
The surprise to me in this gameis zero Drake may touchdowns. But the
UNC run game did show up threehundred and nineteen yards. O'marion Hampton had
two thirty four and three touchdowns. So big week for the run game at
North Carolina and they pulled out againstobviously a competitive Appy State. Heels have
another big game this week. Imean they just have game after game after

(26:22):
game for them. We'll talk aboutthat in a few minutes too. Any
other games you wanted to mention fromlast Saturday, well, last Friday,
last Friday. Yeah, Lance Leopold'sgot Jaylen Daniels back and that joker can
play. Yeah, Kansas defense forcedfifteen negative plays in this game and win
over at home over Illinois thirty four, twenty three Washington or Tulsa at Washington.

(26:48):
Washington can score points and looks likethey're getting getting better at defending thirteen
six and a half, A littlebit of surprise Austin p at Tennessee that
was close until the third quarter,ut pulls away thirty to thirteen. They're
not getting the explosion pass plays thatwe have expected to see. And then

(27:08):
the pick six to seal a winfor Oregon, a really good Oregan win
at Texas Tech. I'm telling youthirty eight, thirty and last, but
not least, Troy, who wona lot of games and has been on
a role go to Kansas State andthey take the loss. In Kansas State,
Will Howard at quarterback, in thatdefense and the way they play special

(27:29):
teams, that team is not goingaway. Well, they think a lot
of folks think they're they're a NewYear's six pick today. I mean,
just write it down that Kansas State'sgoing to be playing in that New Year
six and they've got a shot forthe national title. I don't know,
but there's a lot of people thatlove them and think that team's as good
as anybody in the country right now. How they play there the way they
do it. If I'm an adand I got a job open, there's

(27:52):
no way Chris Klemen's not on myshortlist. I know what, yep understood.
Let's move on to the games thisweek. There are some big ones.
Not as many big ones this nextweek, but we certainly do have
some big games. And let's getstarted with LSU playing at Mississippi State.
Both those teams need a signature winthis season. Yeah, we need to
see a bounce back from LSU.They're going on the road. Coach Harnett

(28:18):
Mississippi State, I am looking forwardto this game. I think this game
could be maybe underappreciated going in.But got lost there. Oh, I
know, I know what it is. I had one more game, Oh,
go ahead number nineteen. Wisconsin wenton the road and take a loss
to the hands of Washington State.Cam Ward can play quarterback. Yeah,

(28:44):
Wisconsin was minus three in turnovers onthe road. That ain't good and then
Washington State one third downs both sidesof the ball, So that was it.
But yeah, back to this week. LSU nine. It's a new
ESPN game nine and a half pointfavorite at Mississippi State SEC road game.
Zacharnett's more run game offense than whatwe're used to seeing from coach leach Will

(29:10):
Rogers is still there, so youknow they have a battle tested guy that
can that can throw the ball andlead. And again this is the second
real test for Jaylen Daniels and LSUonce again, a quarterback matchup in the
SEC. Georgia at South Carolina thethree thirty CBS game. If South Carolina's

(29:32):
offensive line plays like it did thelast time we watched them, yeah,
it's not going to be pretty. It is going to be a long,
long day and interested to see becauseI do believe in South Carolina defensively.
Is what does Carson Beck do inthis first SEC matchup? Yeah, it'll
be interesting. That's a fun game. North Carolina goes to Minnesota. Coach,

(29:53):
this could be a fun game too, two teams that really really want
to get more respect. Yeah, don't don't miss out on this one.
Yeah, because one I want tosee if the three thirty game that North
Carolina is a seven and a halfpoint favorite, does does the North Carolina
defense bounce back and acc on theroad to a Big ten school? We

(30:14):
don't see this and my question isis I don't know how good is Minnesota.
They're two and oh you are whatyour record says you are. Yeah,
they had that good first week winit looked like against Nebraska. So
yeah, this this game is oneI'm looking forward to watching for sure.
So if I told you a monthago that we'd have a bigger story in
the Big Ten other than the fitstory from this summer, you wouldn't have

(30:38):
probably said Michigan State. But we'vegot quite an interesting football game Washington.
Their offense heading to Michigan State.Michigan State right now just a total crap
show. Lord knows what's next there. Yeah, I mean, terrible situation.
It's a terrible situation. You know. The sad thing is when you're

(31:03):
hosting, you've got your two winsthat you expect to get to be two
and oh in your Michigan State tryingto have a bounce back. Here you're
bringing in one of the most uhone of the arguably best offenses without a
doubt at college football. And thesad thing is the shine is off this
game. Yeah that that these kidsdid not need a distraction with this team

(31:26):
coming in to play them in EastLansing. Yeah, but again, who
is Michigan State. Maybe the kidsrise up, maybe they bond together.
Hey, it's us against the world. Let's go. There's only one quarterback
in the country that's that's throwing better. Wow, Division one, top end.
You know, quarterback in the countrythat's throwing better in Pentox and that's

(31:47):
Sanders. So you know, yeah, you know who is Michigan State.
There was less turnover and transfers. And they're too deep. Uh Michigan State.
Noah Kim at quarterback? Is hegood enough? I can just tell
you this. Washington will score.Yeah, Michigan State's got another running back
this year. We'll see what theycan do. Tennessee goes to Florida.
Coach. They hate each other, just they don't like each other at all.

(32:10):
You know, growing up, Ialways from the time I was in
elementary school, middle school, highschool, college, still today, the
memories of football in certain eras andI go back to the nineties. You
can't spell Citrus without ut. Yeah, the old ball coach in the swamp.

(32:37):
Tennessee's coming to town. You know. This was one of the biggest
matchups in college football for a decadeperiod. UT six and a half point
favorite and ranked number eleven. Thisis a big game for Billy Napier and
his staff agreed. Yeah, Ithink it's been two thousand and three was

(32:57):
the last time Florida got beat athome versus UT? Where's the electric big
play offense from UT Joe Milton?Does that come out? Does Graham murts
in Florida offense show up and dothey take care of the ball? And
that's obviously always been a question inthe in the career in college for Graham
Murtz. So now this is abig game and Florida fans need something good

(33:20):
to happen because good things are happeningin Tallahassee and good things are happening in
Miami. They need some good thingsto happen there at the swamp. We
do know that Wyoming is known forupsets. They already have one in this
young season. Do they go toTexas and give him a game or is
it just way too high powered onboth sides of the ball for the horn?

(33:42):
Yeah that when Wyoming beat Texas Tech. But I'm gonna tell you right
now, this is all this isabout. Is Texas mature enough to not
have a hangover? Yeah? Pathim on the back, will they crap
in your hand, or will theybe mature enough to say, you know
what that was last week? Wegot bigger things to take care of and
this is not going to be astumbling block this week. That's what really

(34:02):
matters. They're going to give youeverything they have when Wyoming shows up.
Colorado State at Colorado, I neverin a long time would have thought you
and would be talking about the highlightof this game and game day coming there
and everything. It's crazy. It'sColorado State's second game, it's Colorado's third.

(34:23):
I mean seriously, again, Isaid the beginning of the show.
It's ten pm ESPN game days there, it's must see TV. Yeah,
and we'll see what the show bringsthis week. Any other games you want
to mention coming up this weekend?Yeah, first road test, Big ten
game, Penn State at Illinois, the big twelve PM Big Fox game.

(34:47):
Penn States looked the part. They'retwo for two, fourteen and a half
point favorite. But yeah, whatI want to see because I don't know
how good Illinois is, but Iwant to see is Drew Aller as good
as we think we've seen. Yeah, I took Penn State in the points,
so I really think. I thinkthey're gonna They're just gonna blow Illinois

(35:08):
up. Yeah. And then yougot the twelve pm SEC Network game where
the team and coach we just talkedabout. Number fifteen, Kansas State goes
to the SEC to play Missouri,a road game in the SEC. Missouri,
this would be a big win,So I'm interested to see that one.
The next one is Iowa State, who's struggling offensively. They are only

(35:30):
three point favorites at Ohio University onSaturday. And real quick, the back
you word brawl used to be ahuge deal. You got you got Pitt
that's a one point favorite at wVU. Then you've got Syracuse who's two
and a half point favorite at Purdue. Then you've got by U two and
oh going to a two and ohArkansas Arkansas's and eight point favorite. And

(35:52):
last, but not least, thisis a big game. TCU is one
and one, the runner up forthe national championship last year. They are
seven and a half point favorites atHouston, where there's a lot of heat
on coach Holgerson and that staff. The over under in this game is sixty
four hour and a half and Ithink I'll take the over. Wow,
yeah, I would too. There'sgonna be some serious points put up over

(36:15):
there. Good stuff. Man,it's gonna be a fun weekend. Coach,
who won the Day last weekend? What's your Win the Day award for
this week? I'm curious. Yeah, I think this one may catch you
off guard. So I had somerunner ups that were in the mix first
again and it's last year the PACtwelve, or as the PAC twelve is

(36:37):
today, eight ranked teams. That'sa runner up. Didn't really want to
give it to him again, maybethey deserved it. But I caught the
show in Colorado and almost the winner. We're gonna wait and see to say
they're back. But the Texas fanbase and the Texas football program with what

(37:00):
just happened in Tuscaloosa and the wayit looked. But those are all three
runners up to the winner. Thewinner is the Pack two Oregon State Washington
State, who are winning football gamesagain, and their attorneys get a judge

(37:23):
to rule a restraining order to notallow the departing Pack twelve teams to hold
a conference meeting. And I'm thinkingand supposedly, when Colorado announced that they
were leaving the Pack twelve to goto the Big twelve. A letter was
sent from the rest of the PACtwelve institutions that you are no longer a

(37:45):
part of any of the meetings.Ah, it's come back to bite them
because now Washington State and Oregon Stateare saying Washington State and Oregon State are
now saying, well, hold onnow, yeah, you can't have the
cake and eat it too. Andwhat's happened is is they are going to

(38:06):
be the Pack two, but theyare going to keep what is the guts
of the Pac twelve and we maysee the new pack twelve, pack eight,
Pack sixteen, whatever it is withthe Mountain West schools getting involved.
But you know what, that mademe happy. Yeah, I get that
the two that got left that areplaying at a high level. I think

(38:30):
what they they're doing is absolutely okaywith me. There you go. Both
those teams are playing well, goodstuff. Coach Western Kentucky comes to Ohio
State. It's a four o'clock gameon Saturday. That game will be on
Fox. The Hilltoppers have an explosiveoffense quarterback who has yet to throw an
interception. This season. He's They'vescored what ninety three points in two games.

(38:53):
We know that Western Kentucky can scorepoints, but what are the Buckeyes
need to do to win a gameand get better? Well, first off,
this will be the second time sinceI was in college that I was
in the stands for a college footballing. Yeah. You got some friends coming
up from w KU. Yeah,And a good friend listener Gary here in

(39:17):
town has us with tickets to goto the game. He offered him up
a year ago because he knew mypast at Western w KU. And so
I have good friends that listen toshow that are coming up to go.
They've never been to no high stadium. They've even got permission to wear WKU
gear and those seats that are ownedby an a high state A. Yeah,

(39:43):
So I look forward to seeing somefriends from w KU. Talked to
a staff member there today, greatguy. So here, here's here's what
we need to know. So you'vegot w KU twenty eight point dogs at
Ohigh Stadium. A sixty three pointover and under South Florida forty one.
Twenty four was a victory for WKUover South Florida. Problem was they gave

(40:06):
up three hundred and seventy four yardsrushing in that game. Then you got
Houston Christian last week fifty two points. Head football coach Tyson Helton, who's
done an outstanding job. Good reallygood offensive mine, offensive coordinator Drew Holland
Shad. They can call ballplays andthey can score points. DC Tyson summer

(40:27):
in year two a little bit toughfor him. They've had an entire staff
that they had to build back ondefensively because guy's leaving to whatever better opportunities
they think. But quarterback Austin Reid, how they didn't get it. I
can tell you right now. Theywould like to have him in Alabama.
I'm sure. But he was aleading pastor in college football last year for

(40:50):
yardage in twenty twenty two. Theycan sling it, and this year he's
throwing six touchdowns. No picks.Their skill on the on the perimeter.
Watch number eleven, Kai Corley,Dalvin Smith. I hope he plays.
But but they're gonna be in tenpersonnel, eleven personnel. They're gonna spread
it out. It's air raid they'regonna and that's the thing that we're gonna
see, because there's gonna be somethe balls are going to be in the

(41:13):
air. Defensively, I'm sure They'reconcerned about their size and their matchup.
They play a three three five verseUCF. Again, they gave up five
hundred and forty total yards. Uh. They allowed for Houston Christian last week
to be seven of twelve on thirddown. But this is a school that
really, in fact, I thinkmaybe two years ago, you're maybe the

(41:37):
last two years, this was oneof the top teams in the country for
transfer portal. It's not high schoolrecruiting. They're going in the portal.
But here's the thing, Paul, and we can close it out with this.
There's really five things that I'm interestedin seeing Saturday in person. We

(41:57):
will know more about the Buckeye defenseafter or this game. No doubt.
WKU is well coached. On offense, they have a quarterback that slings it,
They scheme you up, they takeshots. So where does that Why
is that important? What's the passrush? What's the coverage? Because both
are gonna have to come into playto slow down Western Kentucky. Secondly,

(42:22):
the matturation of Kyle McCord. Ican tell you with confidence WKU is going
to come in and try to challengeand confuse him. Mix in some pressures,
see if they can get after him, see if they've been getting him
off the spot, make him makeplays under duress that disguise some coverages to
see if he'll make a mistake withtheir downfield passing Game three. Do we

(42:45):
see real improvement in week three withthe Buckeyes offensive line? And that's my
fifth point of something that sticks outthat's already came up at the beginning of
the show. We get back tothe Buckeye defense that creates more negative fluck
plays and takeaways. One takeaway intwo games. The style of ball a

(43:08):
little bit, but still you takethe ball away and you get people off
schedule with some negative plays. Thisguy's going to give you an opportunity to
get hurries and sacks because he's gonnathrow it a lot. Yeah, and
last third down a High State istwenty five percent conversion on third and three

(43:30):
or less in their first two games. Again, the biggest piece of that
typically is run throughs on the offensiveline or lack of movement. They should
absolutely have an advantage personnel wise againstWKU's defensive or defensive front. So those
are the things that I'm going tobe looking for this week. See if

(43:52):
they can play two halves. Now, last week, maybe not as many
players as you would expect to seein a game. Obviously, Ryan Day
was trying to score points. DevinBrown got a lot more reps in the
second half of that game. Butyou want to see if they can put
together two full has because really,if you look back, weren't really strong

(44:12):
in the first half of the EUgame. Scored seven points in the second
half of the YSU game. Sonow before your biggest challenge by far of
the year coming up next week, can the Buckeyes play a full game against
a pretty good w KU Hilltoppers. We are going to find out, and
you will be in the stadium ona beautiful Saturday to be in Columbus and

(44:34):
watch football. I was looking alittle bit ago. Unless it changes,
it looks like it's going to beseventy four at kickoff in Columbus at four
o'clock in the afternoon and beautiful sunshine. What a beautiful day for a football
That's good. That's good. Theonly thing is is when I'm watching all
these games at home every weekend live. Last week, I was by myself
on Saturday until my wife went tosee my in laws. I literally out

(45:00):
on my couch, my chair fromabout ten thirty am until twelve thirty pm.
Never left the house. No,I did put bird seed in the
bird feeders. I did that.Say you know why, I can't say
I never left the house today. But now I get to. Now I'm
at a game with one hundred thousandexperts sitting around me. I have to

(45:24):
wait in line to go to Yeah, if I want to get a cold
pop, it's gonna be about sixteendollars in a line. But no,
the one thing that we are goingto do, I told them they have
to come. What I'm looking forwardto the most you're gonna say is I

(45:45):
haven't been to a skull session sincecollege. So people that have never been
to take them to a skull session. That'll be a cool experience for them.
And especially if you've never seen theband. That's my favorite part of
the game Saturday, I'm not joking, will be the band coming out doing
script Ohio. I mean, itbreaks chills every time, you know,
and if it doesn't, you probablygot to turn around and leave. I
tell people that all the time.Thank you, sir, great show.
