(00:00):
Welcome into the Old Show on iHeartRadio. My name is Paul James. I
am your host. He's the mancoach AJ Pratt. How you doing,
my friends? Well, it wasthe Expert, then it was the brains.
Now it's the man. Yeah.So who three, we're OH for
three, We're oh for three. It's good. It could be star.
It's good to see. We've gotthe changing venue in here today. Change.
(00:22):
We've been in here before, butwe're in a different studio and uh
it's uh not only are we playingat a neutral site, you and I
today we're playing on a short week. We got the we are instead of
Thursday, it's Wednesday. And thatmade me stay up a little bit later.
Actually I got a lot of thework in uh Saturday. But no,
(00:45):
as usual, you've got us readyto go as the show pony.
You got us a great script today. I do want to say, and
you're you're good though, right,Yeah, I'm good. I've told this
young man I'm going to get hisname. Every Thursday. There's a young
man named Bricks, and I thinkBricks is nine eight, but his dad
(01:06):
is one of my best friends andthey listen to the Oh Show every Thursday
night and he'll call so bricks.I didn't see you on ESPN for your
flag football game this week, butI didn't forget you got a new puppy
at the house as of yesterday.Really got an aussydoodle that our daughter named
Maverick. An aussydoodle. That's all. That's got to be a beautiful dog.
(01:27):
We got week eight of high schoolfootball. Yeah, it's October and
I get to go stand hopefully notin the rain for homecoming with my wife
with our daughter on homecoming court onFriday night, which I know they're doing
that game, the pleasant game atuh UH with coaching and Eric, so
(01:49):
congratulations. That will be good. The weather, it's gonna be a little
questionable around this area Friday, Saturday, maybe even Thursday night. It's been
kind of changing around a little littlebit, but definitely the weather that we're
experiencing right now is not going tobe the weather we have over the weekend.
And so yeah, hopefully it staysdry for you. Could be could
(02:10):
make the Buckeye game even more interestingon Saturday with a little bit of way.
I got to get a plug insure, just like coach Harball did
for YouTube TV. Yeah, ittravels, Paul, so we get that
getaway. Think I want to thankour friends that listen to the show that
let us use your cabin. It'swe love it. Up in the mountains.
Weard Witness Protection for a few days. Nice, but Carrion did not
(02:32):
like the YouTube TV travels, sogames that I still had to get some
eyes on got to go with justthe PA. Well, you got the
availability to do it and record allthose games made it pretty good. You
know. The Buckeyes had the weekendoff, so coach I kind of want
to open the show by talking aboutthe state of college football. I want
(02:52):
to talk about it from the competitionstandpoint. We've talked so much about the
state of college football about everything else, but competition right now in college football
because of I think of the otherthings the portal and people being able to
players being able to move and go. I think it's made a lot of
teams a lot better and giving theman opportunity to win some important games.
(03:15):
Does college football not deliver every week? Every week? And I've been a
junkie of it since I was fivesix years old, maybe younger than that,
but yeah, hey, Paul, here's the deal. We've talked about
this on the show before. Notin my lifetime has it been this wide
open, this wide open. Atthis point last year, there were sixteen
(03:43):
undefeated FBS schools. Okay, sixteen, which was more than the year before.
I believe. You can fact checkthat. That may be fake news,
but I believe. But what Ido know is is we have twenty
two undefeated FBS teams this year, and those include A Georgia, A Michigan,
A Texas and Ohio State and FSU. There's your top five right now.
(04:06):
You throw in Penn State, Washington, Oregon, and USC. That's
six through nine. Then you godown and we're going to get a story
told this week with a number twelveundefeated team called the Oklahoma Sooners that look
to be back and are playing defenseagain. You've got a primetime player in
cam Ward out there at Washington Statethat's already got a big win against a
(04:28):
rival, really good football team. They're still undefeated. In Chapel Hill.
How about this one. The MiamiHurricanes are sitting there and it looks like
that A and M win was areally good one for him. The UK
Kitty Cats, we'll talk about thatgame. Sitting there undefeated. How about
Missou in the SEC East. Thenyou got number twenty four Fresno State.
(04:51):
You got a number twenty five Louisvillethat we talked about beginning here, and
oh yeah, we'll throw in thetwenty six team that's just out side the
top twenty five is the team comingto Ohio Stadium Saturday, which is the
undefeated Maryland Terrapins. I mean, think about this. Ohio State is playing
game number five and every game they'veplayed, they've played against an unbeaten team.
(05:13):
Now it is what it is,your first game of the season.
But they say that hasn't happened indecades that Ohio State has played five undefeated
teams to start the season. Butit's just I mean, it's just kind
of the state of college football rightnow. Well, a couple of other
things that throw in here with thelandscape Nashley, there's two really key one
loss teams that are absolutely still init. Yeah that's Notre Dame and Alabama
(05:38):
and the Tide. Yeah, okay, we're through five weeks. These two
teams are out Clemson and LSU,and we thought, especially the latter one,
had a chance and they still can. Right I'm not gonna say definitely.
I don't like to be that definitive. They are probably out because LSU
could still run the table, winan SEC championship, take their chance.
(06:00):
Uh. And this happens in September. But Paul, you stole the thunder
with what you said when you askedthis question. The portal it has absolutely
changed the game. You can't stockpileguys because your two's are going somewhere else
to beat somebody else's ones. Itbackups are now starters at other schools next
(06:24):
season. That's how it works,and it's obviously made a difference. You've
got more high level play at quarterbackbecause of that. I'm not We've talked
about this before, so we don'tneed any more detail. The only thing
I will say that's not good incollege football is if you're coaching it,
it's it's the worst it's ever beenbecause culturally, Uh, Joe's making how
(06:48):
much in NIL and I'm making howlittle? How you keep and a balancing
act and a juggling act to keepthe culture good, especially if things aren't
going the way you expected to too, And then obviously there's no guardrails with
the Anile money and it's free agency, so everything is good for the fan
(07:10):
right now. It's improved for theplayers because they're getting paid and they've got
options without restrictions. But it hasmade life for my friends in college football
a living hell. To be honestwith you, I get it. I
mean, but let's think about themonth of September and how important it was
to college football. Obviously, likeyou said, we have two teams in
(07:30):
Clemson and LSU that are more thanlikely out of the opportunity to be in
the Final four. They could playa huge spoiler in October, but September
was a really big month for alot of teams. In October is just
going to be a lot of goodteams beating each other up. I feel
you look at my notes. Here'sthe thing, Paul, is what you
(07:53):
just said, Clemson and LSU probablyon the outside looking in. I think
definitely for Clemson, they can stillspoil Miami's season, they can spoil North
Carolina, they can give Notre Damea second loss, so yeah, they
can play a big piece. Andthen LSU's at Missoo this week, that's
sitting there undefeated and a lot ofpeople didn't expect Maszoo to be at five
(08:15):
and oh but here they sit ina huge game this week. They could
give the second loss to Alabama, which obviously gets them out, and their
last game of the year, whichis not October November, is a team
that is getting hot and starting todefend. They play Texas A and M
in the last week and SEC Westwill kind of get on that a little
bit, but it is wide open, yeah, wide open. Well,
(08:39):
Jimbo's got to do something, Imean, or he's just out of a
job. I mean, Texas Aand M the way they played football for
the last you can go back intothe end of last season. He's got
October and November to get it right, or he's out of a job and
he can. Texas A and Mcan be a huge spoiler right now.
I mean their only loss is atMiami when they didn't tackle anybody. Yeah,
(09:01):
and if you've watched in the lasttwo weeks, you're like, where
was this team when they went totravel to Miami because they're DJ Diurkins defenses
shown back up and we know coachPetrino can call ball plays and coach offense.
And we'll hit on that when wetalk about this week's game. It's
going to be interesting to see thePac twelve beat each other up in October
because they have marquee games every singleweekend in October, and by the time
(09:24):
we get to November, we'll seehow good the Pac twelve really is and
how beat up they are. Imean, that could be an interesting month
for them. Let's talk about thebest team in the country. Coach,
who is number one? I mean, we know who number one is,
right, I mean, you've gotto have Georgia's number one. They're the
defending titler for two years in arow, they won the Natty twice.
(09:45):
They haven't launched yet. They haveto be number one. But who's the
best team in the country right now? Wow, this is the O Show,
so this may go sideways. Yeah, right now to me, and
we're going to find out. Themost complete team that I've seen, and
a lot of it has to dowith a road win at Alabama is Texas.
(10:09):
They're the best they've been at theline of scrimmage. Quin Yours has
some experience and he's played he's reinventedhimself. They got the skill at every
position. Offensively, they're defending andagain with that signature win. Then I
look at Michigan because the experts interms of draftable players, we've mentioned this,
they're saying seventeen or more on thisroster. They've got a quarterback that
(10:33):
has performed and has experience their skill. They're defending number one the defense in
the country, giving up five pointseven five points a game. Then I
go to that team, Georgia. Here's the thing that would worry me about
Georgia. How much of a differenceStet's invent it was? Is back going
to get there? And Todd Monkinnothing against Mike Bobo at all. I
(11:00):
think Todd Bunkins ay next is extremelygood football coach. He's shown it in
the NFL with the Ravens now Andthe other thing is is Georgia at this
point is zero point differential in thefirst quarter. They have no more points
or no less points than their opponents. You t Martin Ball State, South
(11:22):
Carolina, UAB and then they hadto take it to the end of the
game last week with Auburn. Butthey're talented, they reload, they're coached.
Rock Bowers arguably could be the bestfootball player in college football right now.
And if somebody said today you getto take one team. From what
(11:46):
I've seen, Texas is right there. But I really do think Michigan's roster
is I mean, they impose theirwill, they really do. Why that
my top four because I have tohave Georgia there because they haven't lost.
They you just have to give themthe respect. But Georgia, Texas,
Oregon and Michigan. I think ofthe four best teams in the country right
now, I really do today today, right now, the way we're talking,
(12:09):
that's the four best teams in thecountry. Next week it could be
completely different because they all have biggames this week, you know. But
here's the thing. Health means alot injuries. As the year goes on,
you don't, you either get betteror you get worse. So we
could have this conversation two or threeweeks down the road after our High State
(12:31):
maybe takes it to Penn State andwe say that's one of the best three
or four football teams in the country. Absolutely can because I think Penn State
is truly one of the best teamsin the country. There's no question in
the show up. So you know, Oregon finally ranked higher than USC.
I don't know how in God's namethat happened up until finally this week.
It's because they played a you know, a common opponent, Washington right there.
(12:54):
So I got to ask coach beforewe get into the key games from
last week, is the SEC PACtwelve just gonna beat each other up between
now and in Thanksgiving and maybe eventhe week past when they're in the championship
games. I just feel like thenext eight weeks is gonna be We're gonna
go Wow. I can't believe thatteam from the SEC beat that other team
(13:15):
from the SEC. And the samewith the Pack twelve. Yeah, USC
a problem. They're never gonna goaway. They sell magazines. I buy
them, sure, preseason rankings andCaleb Williams effect, that's that's what you
got SEC and PAC twelfth. Paul, your question, Yeah, very possible,
very very possible. Uh. Thewinner of the UK Georgia game is
(13:39):
in the catbird seat in the SECEast, no doubt about it. I
mean, Tennessee is still there. We're gonna see about missou if if they're
for real. By the way, their quarterback is playing at a very high
level. Yeah, are arguably thebest in the SEC right now. You
could argue the SEC West has alreadysaid is wide open with Alabama A and
(14:01):
m LSU or Missus put themselves backin the picture and the PAC twelve USC
Oregon, Washington Oregon State even thoughthey have lost and undefeated Washington State the
sad Colorado can score and can't stopanybody. Utah can stop anybody and can't
score. Yeah, you gotta feelbad about Utah because they really were set
(14:22):
up to have a decent offense. But your quarterback's not playing because he's hurt,
so uh, you kind of gotto feel bad for them a little
bit. But man, that defenseis right. I got I was gonna
say this when we talk about theirgame, but I told my buddy Ernie,
Utah right now without Cam rising,is Iowa West right? No,
you're absolutely right outstanding in all phasesphysical as can be. But yeah,
(14:46):
it's uh, but you don't feelbad for Iowa because they're doing it to
themselves. Utah ended up in thissituation because Cam ain't playing, so uh,
it is what it is. Let'sdig into those games from last week.
Coach. Right off the bat,we got to talk about Ole miss
fifty five, LSU forty nine.Wow, God, the Rebels can score.
We know that, but what afootball game? Huh? Thirteen and
(15:09):
forty three total game yards. JadenDaniels though LSU again was tremendous outstanding.
The problem for LSU was defense.Matt House's defense, and I'm sure it
was not a friendly week for him, but yeah, defense, third down
defense. The only turnover in thegame was on LSU, which obviously was
(15:33):
the difference in a one score gamethat came down to the to the wire.
But old misfinished. They didn't finishagainst Alabama this past week. They
win the fourth quarter twenty one toseven. Jackson Dart had an outstanding day
obviously, four hundred and forty totalyards, five touchdowns, zero turnovers.
We said, where has Quinn ShawnJupkins been? Oh? Here he is.
(15:54):
Thirty three carries for one seventy seven. He was back, and a
big day for wide receiver Trey HarrisOle Miss scored enough. Yeah, I
was blown away by the Georgia Auburngame. Georgia wins by touchdown twenty seven
twenty. But what blew me awayin that game was how they relied on
Brock Bowers coach. Is he themost valuable non quarterback player right now?
(16:21):
In next year's NFL draft. Ican't know if you pick another one.
I was just listening to on thedrive over here. Jim Naggy, who
scouted for the Patriots. Yeah, sat in my office. He is the
one that took the message about JulianEdelman back to New England. Great guy.
(16:41):
Jim is over the Senior Bowl now, Okay, And ironically at about
five fifteen or whatever, when I'mpulling in here, Jim Naggy's talking about
exactly what you said. Is therea more valuable Probably not. There's a
couple edge guys maybe, but nothe different anyone else other than him?
(17:02):
Right now? It's hard to say. Here here's my question. By the
way, eight catches one to fiftyseven, one touchdown, they hand him
the ball. That's smart coaching. It ain't about plays, it's about players.
Ernie and I were talking. Isthere a better college tight end than
brock Bers in my lifetime Winslow juniorShocky back in the day. Is it
(17:23):
kid Keith Jackson? I mean, yeah, it's impressive. Carson beck solid
had the one pick, but Georgiafinds a way to win on the road
at Auburn, the defense held Auburnto two of twelve on third down defense
and only allowed eighty eight pass yardsin the game. The bottom line is
(17:45):
is as you can see the frustrationthe last couple weeks on Eu Freeze's face.
It was smoking mirrors to keep themin the game. They're not good
enough at quarterback. They're not PeytonThorn is not going to do what they
need him to do. Is thebest they got. Yeah, they don't
have the skill players offensively. He'llget that fixed. But again, yeah,
(18:06):
Thorn's numbers ten to nine one Iin t only throwing that four point
three yards per completion ain't gonna getit done against the Georgia Bulldogs. But
the Auburn kids played their tailoff andthose fans help them stay in the game
until the end of the fourth quarter. I thought about this earlier today,
the way c J. Stroud isplaying. If the Texas Texans can get
brock Bowers, that team's legit nextyear. Yeah. CJ. Stays healthy
(18:30):
and they can protect them and youknow everything else with it. But I
mean, you got a quarterback,and you've got a guy who's a game
changer when he gets the football inhis hands. Wow, I mean that
the Texans can go from worse tofirst in two years by getting the right
quarterback and the right guy at tightend. I mean, they could be
that good. I really believe that. Not to repeat myself, but I've
talked about this. You know.I love tight ends, tackles, tight
(18:52):
ends. I coached a lot oftight ends and good ones and the use
of the tight end, and thepro football has worked its way down to
college football with one back, twotight end, twelve personnel, creating gaps,
helping yourself in the run game, but getting those matchups, and he's
a matchup nightmare. You get theright one and you're gonna win a lot
(19:14):
of games. Oregon State beats Utahtwenty one seven. Coach, you said
it best. It really is kindof Iowa West for Utah right now.
Great defense, zero offense. Yeah, I mean, it's that's fourth.
The first play of last week's gamewas a pick six to get Utah up
seven to nothing. They score sevenmore points with four entire quarters, and
then this week they have the sevendefense showed up again. But man,
(19:37):
I really like other than the penaltiesthis past week, I love how Jonathan
Smith's teams play and what was crazywatching this game last Friday. Man was
it was a boxing match. Imean, these two teams play physical as
can be, but the defense showsup for Oregon State, holding the impotite
(20:00):
Utah offense to two of thirteen onthird down, only one hundred and ninety
eight total yards for the Utes.Dju was okay. Yeah, he did
some good things, made a coupleof mistakes. He was okay, but
it was good enough to beat Utah. Coach. If USC doesn't start playing
defense, they're gonna get beat.I mean there's no question. I mean,
(20:22):
forty eight to forty one over Colorado, and Colorado has no defense.
Obviously USC can score well. ButUSC's defense is not good. No,
it's they're not shown up. Theydon't tackle, it's tough, they don't
cover. So this is forty eightto twenty one Southern Cal in the middle
(20:42):
of the third quarter. Yeah, and you're thinking this thing is over.
Then Caleb Williams throws an eye int makes that mistake. There's a missed
USC field goal. Next thing youknow, we got a ball game.
Sure the Sanders. Colorado battles back. He has four touchdown passes, one
(21:02):
run. He did have that oneinterception. Wide receiver Omaron Miller stepped up
big time, almost two hundred yardsreceiving on seven catches in Colorado rand the
ball for the first time this year, so they haven't been able to run
the ball against any opponent, andthey run for almost two hundred against Southern
Cal. That's a big time concern. Caleb Williams big day, six touchdowns,
(21:23):
four three the one pick. TajWashington had a big day out there
on the perimeter for Southern Cal.Just another name we have this week that's
different than the one of the previousweeks. But both teams have to improve
defensively. We know that. Butif I'm a Southern Cal fan, it
will get you one time. Yeah, will There's going to be a game
(21:45):
where you're not playing great offensively andyour defense is lack of chance or lack
of ability to stop the opponent isgoing to get them beat. Sitting here
today, you got to believe thatWashington and Oregon are going to score a
ton of points against USC and probablyhave the opportunity to outscore them to win
the game. Oregon plays defense.I don't see where anybody can see that
(22:07):
USC is a better football team thanOregon today. I can't. So does
Oregon State, so does wash ItState. They play better defense and they
can score. It's going to beinteresting to see how they run through the
deal. Now you're Cats boy, thirty three fourteen over Florida. It seems
like every week we do this show, Coach, we bring out another player
that now is in the Heisman race. This week the name to remember is
(22:30):
Ray Davis. Oh my gosh, did he run over Florida. Here's the
problem for the in this game. For Florida catching a lot of heat in
the offseason, get beat early, and then they have that what looks to
be Billy Napier's signature win against athome against Tennessee where they bullied Tennessee.
(22:52):
Well, same questions are now backon Coach Napier and that staff and that
team, because I'm telling you rightnow, this was Ray Charles seeing hearing
Kentucky physically whip at the line ofscrimmage and that, honestly, that was
(23:12):
the biggest concern for Kentucky this yeargoing into the seasons. Their offensive line,
and they just dominated the Gators.Florida can only rush for sixty nine
yards. Kentucky dominates the game onthat side, Florida ten bit penalties,
the one turnover, that's costly, but this game was never in question.
Never. Uh yeah. Ray Davistwenty six two eighty that's right at eleven
(23:36):
yards eclipped three hundred and twenty ninetotal yards rushing for UK. And this
tells me when you look, coachUK has zero turnovers and three small penalties.
It was a dominant performance there inLexington. Yeah, Stoops has got
himself a football team. We'll seehow they performed this week. Kansas Texas.
(23:56):
Obviously we were disappointed that Kansas quarterbackwasn't but Texas wins forty to fourteen.
The Horns roll what in just whata balanced offense Jonathan Brooks quinn yours.
I mean, that's just a reallyreally good football team, man.
Yeah, And that's that's why I'msaying they're right there. If they go
out and take it to Oklahoma, there's your there's your number one team.
(24:18):
Gotta be so disappointing. You wantthe best players in the game. Yeah,
And I'm watching the first series,I'm like, that's Jason Bean out
there. Yeah, I said, where's Jalen Daniels If you remember he got
injured last year. Well, henever came out on the field now.
They interviewed him the day before TVdid. There was nothing said nothing,
(24:42):
he's ready to roll back spasms, back tightness. He's out. That really
hurts. Jason Bean has been agood starter for them with him out,
but he had that one fumble, costly fumble, and they struggled on third
down. They were oer for eightKansas was on third down, which means
Texas was good on third down ondefense. But yeah, you're right,
(25:02):
Paul, Texas rushed for three hundredand thirty six when yours passed for three
twenty five. That is outstanding balancewith a lot of yards. Texas is
now tied for twelfth and scoring defense. That's great news. And you said
it, Jonathan Brooks. He canplay the running back position as well as
anybody in the country right now.Wide receiver not Xavier Worthy, but a
(25:23):
Dona Mitchell had a huge day.Only concern they're struggling in the kicking game.
Bird Auburn had two more miss fieldgoals, So remember that this week,
if it comes down to the wire, is the kicker. And you
never want to see this stat Kansaspunted six times Texas punted zero. Yeah,
(25:44):
so you're probably go win those games. Yeah, absolutely, coach,
Right now, I don't care whoyou root for if you don't realize what's
going on up in ann Arbor.Michigan is really really good. They've blown
Nebraska's doors off, and that teamis just I all three phases and their
offense has weapon after weapon after weapon. Well, they're bludging you. Yeah.
(26:06):
And there wasn't a slow start becauselast week I said watch out if
it's a slow start, because Nebraskafans will get in the game. Michigan
didn't have no slow start at all. Bad English year forty five nothing in
the fourth quarter they call off thedogs. JJ McCarthy again shows he's a
duel threat. The combo of Kormand Donovan Edwards what we expected. Roman
Wilson playing one of the cut aball off a helmet. I mean,
(26:32):
you got a star out there. They impose their will. I'm saying that
on both sides of the ball. They were good on third down both ways.
They had zero turnovers, zero penalties. That's really really impressive to me.
I don't know if there's another teamlast week in FBS that had zero
penalties and zero turnovers. Heinrich Harbaugh. Harberg is the best Nebraska has right
(26:55):
there. He's getting the knot atquarterback Paul. They're just not talented enough,
and thankfully for them, and theydidn't take the ball away. Obviously,
they only caused one negative play.Michigan had one negative play. So
it's good that matt rule has beengiven a long extension because they're gonna have
(27:15):
to do some retooling for sure.Still, absolutely absolutely he'll be able to
get people to come to Nebraska. Why wouldn't you want to go play there?
Gosh, I know, but it'sjust such a touch of great atmosphere
in college football if you ever geta chance to go there, it really
is. Coach, we got totalk about this bounce back when Marcus Freeman's
irish. Oh my gosh, twentyone fourteen, they beat Duke, and
(27:37):
they do it on the final drive. Hartman says, give me the ball,
let's go ahead. And you gottabe happy for what Notre Dame did
or playing well well that fourth quarterestimate touchdown run than two point conversion.
There were two critical Duke turnovers.Yeah, that made the difference in the
game, But what Notre Dame didon the road they didn't do at home.
(28:00):
Yeah, it was the opposite taleof what they faced the week before,
so there wasn't a hangover. CreditNotre Dame's defense, holding Riley Leonard
to twelve of twenty seven. Hehas a touchdown, but as I said,
two critical turnovers. He did rushfor eighty eight. Tight End Mitchell
Evans was a big piece of NotreDame's offense on Saturday. Six receptions for
(28:22):
one hundred and thirty four not Meyerthis year's Evans, but Notre Dame had
way too many mistakes and bad penalties, especially in the first half, but
minus two in the turnover category wasthe difference maker in this game. You
heard an updated Is he okay?Quarterback Riley? I have not. I
was really classy to see Hartman goover and do what he did. But
(28:44):
he's just I just I have alot of respect for that guy, and
I got a lot of respect forthe Irish. I think that's a really
good football team. I think MarcusFreeman's putting together a winner. I really
do. So we'll see where they'reat at the end of the season.
Alabama beats Mississippi State forty to seventeen. All the drama, all the questions,
coach, you said at the Tideis truly the team to beat in
(29:04):
the SEC West. You just haveto put all that stuff aside. That
team is playing really well right now. They go as Jalen Milroe goes,
I say, I'll say it everyweek, broken record. He's ten for
twelve, so only twelve four passesfor the Tide, but that's fine.
He made plays with his legs, big plays with his legs, didn't turn
the ball over, and the Tiderun game and defense showed up. You
(29:29):
got linebacker Jihad Campbell fourteen tackles, safety Caleb that Down's thirteen tackles. That's
a good day on defense for theTide. Here's the thing that we saw
last year in the beginning of thisyear, and you're like, how does
that happen to a Nick Saban coachteam. Zero turnovers this week and only
six penalties, which is still aboutfour or two too many. Yeah,
(29:49):
but still five and six less thanthey were having. I feel sorry for
Will Rogers because Mike Leach's offense hadhim throwing it round and he has one
hundred and seven passing yards. WillRodgers through three picks, sacked four times.
You can tell he's frustrated. Yeah, yeah, no question about that,
coach. I had to bring thisone up. Dave Randa's Baylor Bears.
(30:11):
They're alive. We didn't think theywere well by Golly won an epic
comeback. I mean, I getit, they're playing UCF, but one
of the biggest comebacks in the historyof college football for the Baylor Beans on
Saturday. You don't think that staffand that team at Central Florida was not
literally dying. Yeah. Yeah,it's the biggest comeback in Baylor history.
(30:33):
Paul. They're down thirty five toseven in the third quarter. Yeah,
they score twenty nine unanswered, makea field goal, block a field goal
on the final play, and wenton the road, Blake shaping a solid
day ten of eighteen on third down. They finished this game. But a
bad loss for UCF to turnovers,to miss field goals, seven penalties and
(30:56):
costly situations. That's how you blowa thirty five to seven lead. Yeah.
Yeah, And I know you've gotsome other games you want to mention.
I'm thinking you may. You maywant to talk about that upset in
the MAC. Yeah. Real, our quick hitters a good road wind for
Louisville at mc state played well ond their thirtieth and score defense Right now,
(31:18):
Louisville is Jack Plumber. It's gotto quit turning the ball over and
they have to run the ball better. It's twenty. That's why the score
is thirteen to ten. Louisville yetwenty team rushing yards. Brendan Armstrong played
himself out. They've named a newstarter this week, which MJ. Morse
maybe who it is. And eachteam had ten penalties and three turnovers.
(31:41):
This was far from a clean game. In fact, it was really sloppy.
Yeah, it was ugly, andbut Louisville, sitting there at five
and zero, found a way.As bad as they played offensively, their
defense showed up and they found away. Number six Penn State forty one at
Northwestern. They have a slow start, little sleepwalking, strong finish. Number
seven Washington thirty one over the hometeam Arizona twenty four. Opposite fast start
(32:07):
for Washington, hangs on with Arizonasecond half efforts. Number nine Oregon forty
two at Stanford six. Slow startin a small crowd, yeah, and
they wake up for a strong finish. Maybe the surprising record of the of
the season to me. And it'sgreat is WVU goes to TCU, they
(32:31):
shut up, They shut TCU outand go ten zero in the second half
and find a way to get tofour and one, and the schedule going
forward, they can get Bowl eligiblequick. So that's a cool for them,
You got it, Big mac wincoach Leffler, great job, BG
thirty eight at ACC Georgia Tech twentyseven. That's a bad loss for the
(32:52):
for the Hornets or yellow jackets.Hornets, yeah, yellow jackets, same
thing. They both stinging, awhole lot of buzzing going on, so
it doesn't matter what you could callthem the flies because there's no buzz going
on down there right now. Andthen you got OSU opponent IU seventeen at
Maryland five and oh forty four pointsto Lee at twenty four thirty four,
(33:15):
three fifty two, five touchdowns, zero picks. You get to see him
in Columbus this weekend. And hereyou go Missoo, Fresno State, JMU
Marshall and Air Force. Yeah, all wins to stay undefeated. And I
can't forget this one. Oklahoma fiftyto twenty over Iowa State five and oh
(33:36):
to the Red River Shootout. It'sgonna be a lot of fun at noon
on Saturday at the State Fair ofTexas. And I want to kind of
open the week six games by talkingabout the Red Revel River rivalry because Oklahoma
and Texas are getting together in theCotton Bowl noon as they always do during
the Fair. It's just, Imean, everything about that game is awesome.
(34:00):
And oh, by the way, both teams are really really playing at
a high level right now. Sixtypoint over and under. You got Texas.
There really kind of more home fieldfor Texas. Obviously, sure it's
in Texas, it's the Texas StateFair, but I think it is it
Texas's home game this year. Theygo back and forth. I think,
(34:20):
yeah, Texas is listed as thewhole team. This is really simple.
And by the way, it's theRed River Shootout. We're not going to
the Red River whatever they're calling itnow. Off is Oklahoma for real.
They're allowing eight and a half pointsa game on defense, that's number three
in the country. They're scoring fortyseven and a half points a game.
That's the number three offense is scoringin the country. And here's this the
(34:44):
next test, the question that weget asked every year, is Texas back?
And this would be another really reallygood win that in my opinion,
if it's a win this week inOklahoma, it's not a slot fest.
There's your new number one team myopinion. I agree. I agree one
hundred percent. By the way,Yeah, that was Paul James preseason pick.
(35:07):
I'm telling you I feel that theHorns are It's the same in baseball.
I told these guys the day beforethe first game of the baseball season
March thirty first or March twenty ninth, or whatever it was. My buddies
all asked me, who do youthink is going to win the World Series?
And I said, Texas. IfTexas stays healthy. We're talking about
(35:28):
the Rangers, I think they winit all and they're like, you can't
pick them. Well, they're inthe playoffs, so shush your mouths.
And I put my money on Iput well, that team is unbelievable.
I'm not saying they're going to winit. I'm just saying when I looked
at it in March, I said, I think Texas has the best opportunity
to do something that nobody expects. And I put money on it. I
could make one hundred and sixty eightbucks in a month and a half.
(35:51):
I don't think so because I agreewith you. I think the National League's
going to win the World Series. But still, you pick a team and
you find a reason to like them, and you stay with him. I
think Texas is the best team inthe country. LSU at Missouri another great
game, huge game for both ofthose teams. Noon ESPN. LSU sitting
there, number twenty three, threeand two wounded on the road again,
(36:15):
can they play defense? They aresix and a half point favorites, but
the over under sixty four and ahalf, number twenty one. Missoo sitting
there, Come on, LSU,we got you at home. Brady Cook
eleven touchdowns to zero interceptions. Thequestion is again on the other side of
the ball, can Massoo at homewith the help of the crowd slow down
(36:37):
Jaden Daniels and at LSU offense andthose receivers again had a huge week.
Huge week. We're going to findout who's number one in the SEC West.
Alabama goes to Texas, A andM. It's three point thirty CBS
number eleven. Alabama sitting there withthat lost to Texas. They are going
(36:58):
on the road to Texas. Aand M four and one, a two
and a half point favorite. Thetied are expecting a low score forty six
and a half over and under samething every week. Does Alabama play well
enough offensively, they'll take care ofthe ball. If they take care of
the ball, they will defend. But look right now, stock is up
for the A and M offense.Max Johnson looks like that's a really good
(37:22):
fit for coach Patrino's offense. Yeah. A and M is very skilled offensively.
They've recruited well. And again I'vesaid last couple of weeks, d
J. Jerkins defense has showed upand they got dudes up front that can
get after Milrow and defend. Sothis could be an outstanding football game.
(37:44):
And it would not surprise me ifeither team wins it. Which Syracuse team
shows up when they go to NorthCarolina and take on the undefeated Heels,
that should be a really good footballgame. Yeah. The three thirty ESPN
Syracuse, with their first loss lastweek obviously to Clinton at home, go
to number fourteen undefeated coming off ofbye. Fresh off of bye week,
(38:07):
the tar Heels are eight and ahalf point favorites. Can Syracuse slow Drake
May And my question for you andsee does that gene Chiswick defense show up?
Syracuse is all averaging thirty eight pointtwo points a game, and a
lot of that has to do withlu threat quarterback Garrett Schrader. We are
going to find out if Kentucky isas good as anybody in the country.
(38:30):
They go to Georgia seven pm ESPN. Between the hedges. When is Devin
Leary going to have a breakout game? Because if they can run the ball
the way they did now, they'renot going to run the ball like that
against George. I don't think so. And I can tell you right now
that's what George is saying. MakeLeary beat us. Ye that Davis in
(38:53):
that offensive line and the receipt whenyou run for that many yards, Paul,
everybody's contributing because you're getting runs becausereceivers are blocking dbs in the back
end. But is Kentucky for real? They've had a pretty week schedule.
Questions will be answered if they takeaway Georgia. Does the run game of
(39:13):
Kentucky that, like I said, that will be their focus. I understand
why they're a fourteen and a halfpoint favorite at home. Michigan goes to
Minnesota. A lot of people thinkMichigan's going to go into Minnesota and blow
their doors off. What do youthink, well, Vegas, thanks for
nineteen point favorites. I seven thirtyNBC expecting because Minnesota has struggled a little
bit offensively. They're sitting there withthree and two. They are at home,
(39:36):
but they're only averaging twenty four pointsper game. They're facing the number
one score defense in college football, and Minnesota's got injuries at running back,
which doesn't help. But yeah,Michigan will respect their opponent, but I
think we both expect what the outcomewill be. So Notre Dame has the
toughest schedule in college football. Ithink a lot of people have seen that
up to this point. Now wherewe're at at the end of the season,
(39:59):
that can be real evaluated based onall those teams. But right now
Notre Dame running through a gauntlet. They got to go play Louisville, who
you said earlier in the season wouldprobably be undefeated at this point because of
their schedule. So now we're goingto find out where the rubber meets the
road for both these teams. Yeah, a third straight night game for the
Irish. Yeah, huh, buckeye'es duke. Now we're back on the
(40:21):
road at Louisville. Even though we'renot in the ACC, we play the
ACCL lot. Yeah, fifty fourover runder. Notre Dame is a six
and a half point favorite on theroad, A big, big game for
that first year staff at Louisville toof the better defenses in college football.
Notre Dames given up twelve point eightygame, Louisvill's given up seventeen point two.
Louisville's been tested. Has Louisville beentested other than NC State? That's
(40:45):
my question. Because you got GeorgiaTech, who just got beat by Bowling
Green in the MAC. You've gotMurray State FCS, you got Indiana that
does not look good right now inBoston College who's struggling mightily. But quarterback
Jake Jack Plumber has to show upthis week for Louisville or it's going to
be a long night. He's gotsix interceptions so far this year, and
(41:05):
that's got to cease. Coach,I don't think a lot of people realize
how good Arizona's football team is.That's a good football team that's going to
play at USC on Saturday night. That could be a really good football game
if Arizona can score some points andkeep USC off the board. This is
the game. It gets me introuble every week, the ten thirty pm
Eastern start every week. Are youserious You're going to do what? Listen?
(41:30):
Coach Fish's got Arizona playing better atUSC is a twenty one and a
half point favorite, but again Vegasknows seventy two is the over under My
question is is Arizona have enough firepower? Averaging twenty seven point six per game.
(41:51):
You've got Noah Fitt in there forJaden de Laura goes out and then
Joanah Coleman, where's he in thisgame? Ing back for Arizona? But
again video game stuff, USC,Lincoln Riley, that crew receivers and the
Heisman Trophy winner are averaging fifty threesix a game. So it's a tall
order on the road for Arizona.I get it. Who else you looking
(42:12):
to watch this weekend? Well, three pm the PAC twelve network with wins
against Wisconsin and Oregon State. Yougot number thirteen Washington State at three and
one, UCLA and Ucla is actuallya three and a half point favorite.
Cam Ward offense Washington State's average inforty six a game Noon Peacock number.
(42:37):
How about this now? Rutgers isfour and one. Their only loss to
Michigan is at three and one Wisconsin, who's the fourteen point favorite. This
comes off of bye week for Wisconsin. This is a big game for Luke
Fickle on his staff coming off ofbye week in their first year. The
CW two PM four and O.Marshall at three and two inc State m
(42:58):
c State needs a win. Theirnext three if they don't get this one,
are at Duke, Clemson and MiamiWow. And you know Marshall,
they're playing d and they're scoring thirtypoints a game. The next game on
Peacock at three thirty. You gottwo and three Perdue, who came off
a big win against Illinois last week, are at four and one. Iowa
thirty eight and a half is theover under. The Hawkeyes are two and
(43:22):
a half, but their favorites, but they're gonna be playing with The backup
was Cave McNamara's eye for the yearwith the torn acl You hate to see
that. Hopefully we get to seehim play another college game next year.
Three thirty ACC Network Dave Clawson's WakeForest team that people believe would be a
lot more under man this week,or sitting there at three and one,
at three and two Clemson, who'sa twenty one point favorite. And then
(43:44):
last but not least seven thirty SECNetwork two and three Arkansas staring two and
four at the face at number sixteenOld Miss off that big win Ole Miss
eleven and a half point favorite athome Arkansas. Saw's got the worst,
right, got the worst schedule?Yeah, b y U L s U
(44:04):
A and m Ole Miss Alabama backto back to back. Yeah they get
to play Alabama next week. Yeahgosh. Yeah, Well, welcome to
twenty twenty three. You know nowyou know why Sam Pittman talks about drinking
on it that way. Coach, let's get to the best part of the
program. Let's talk about who wonthe Day last weekend coach a Jays win
(44:28):
the Day award. Well, herehere are the contenders and prospects when knock
them out Ole Miss oc Charlie Weissjunior. That offense went for seven O
six fifty five points, no turnovers. Already mentioned it West Virginia's Neil Brown
and staff four and one with lotsof heat before the season started. Now
they're kind of put themselves in theposition to get to a six or seventh
(44:49):
win quickly because they're going to beuh, they could be favored in a
couple of these next coming games.Scott Leffler BG falcons a road wind at
Georgia Tech that that staff needs tohave some success. That was a huge
win for him and hit his kids. Dave Aranda and Baylor's epic comeback.
Historic. Last, but not leastbefore the winner is Ray Davis, the
(45:13):
UK offensive line and offense putting upthat incredible day where he rushed for two
to eighty and they rushed for threeeighty whatever it was. But Paul the
winner, you got to follow meon this one. I'm with you because
I thought about this long and hard. The winner is the month of October.
The month of October. You gotOctober fests, Yeah, some cold
(45:37):
beverages. You got the fall foliage. Yeah, you got jeans and hoodies
for the first times. It's probablyApril right on it's Halloween. One of
my favorite I like to watch scarymovies. We like to do that as
a family, we like to handout candy, have a good time for
Halloween. But October is the you'rejust showing me the sphere. Yeah,
(46:02):
well this is the sphere for collegefootball October. How many teams and fan
bases have hope and are saying thismay be our year? Do you don't
think the UK right now, Ithinks if we can pull this one up,
maybe this is our year. When'sthe last time Washington fans are saying
this may be our year? Yeah, Texas is back. Yeah, you
(46:27):
don't think that fan base has beenwaiting and you know what, they could
be into early mid October and theycan say we are back Oklahoma it was
dire straits Rent Vinnibles is going tobe on a short leash. They can't
defend, they can't score. Yougot Dylan, we got a quarterback.
We just upset Texas and October onthis beautiful stage. What about missou Eli
(46:49):
drink Witz win this year or you'reout. He's sitting at five and ho
and the team that's three and two. You don't think Missoo and fans are
saying, wait a minute, Georgiadon't look like the Georgia that we've been
playing. UT. Don't look likeUT from last year. Uk' that's the
guy. We can do this. What about USC? When's the last time
Southern cal fans, it's been sinceold ball coach in Seattle? What's my
(47:13):
man's name? I just I can'tbelieve. I just forgot my man's This
is the first time I believe behindclosed doors the fan base may be more
important because you always believe behind closeddoors. You don't think the Penn State
fan base says this may be ouryear. They better because they're good.
It's been the eighties, what eightysix? Maybe the last time Penn State
(47:37):
won a national title? Oh waita minute, we went from Jr.
And Bobby Ewing and all the disasterTexas A and M beats Alabama. They
get well quick. You don't thinkA and M says, hey, if
we run the table, it's onegame at a time. I have not,
Oh, well, forgot about thisone. When's the last time the
(47:57):
U. When's the last time thatthe U said, you know what,
if we run this out in theACC and they beat up on themselves in
the Pac twelve, the SEC,the Big ten's probably got more. Really
a championship caliber teams than they've hadbecause of where Penn State is October,
Paul, beyond the cold drinks, the foliage, the jeans and the hoodies.
(48:22):
Halloween is the stage, because whenwe get out October, this picture's
gonna look a lot different, andwe're gonna be down from about sixteen teams
to probably about eight teams. Andwe're gonna say we have a good idea
who's gonna win win these conferences,And we're gonna have another eight or ten
teams that are as good as allof them but couldn't seem to find the
way to win a game in Octoberthat they needed to that are gonna be
(48:45):
waiting to do something in November. It's gonna be fun. October's bringing it
all, right, Coach, let'stalk about the Terps. Can we say
they're quietly undefeated? I get it, they haven't played a whole lot of
really good football teams, but coachtheir offenses like yet, it really is
Maryland coming to Ohio State for ahomecoming Saturday noon on Fox. Coach your
(49:06):
buddy, coach locks he's got agood football team. Can they stun Ohio
State and Columbus or no, surethey can sure they can. You know,
you always get nervous about a byeweek, and I can guarantee you
they probably weren't overly excited about seeingafter four games. You'd prefer depending on
how your healthy your team is isthe Buckeyes, you typically prefer a halfway
(49:27):
point, maybe after game seven.I got a bye week. Let's get
healthy for this last run because youknow you're playing Michigan at the end of
the year. You know you're probablyplaying in a Big Ten championship. You
got Penn State on the way,you got to go to Wisconsin, who
might be able to scare you bythen? Who knows the big noon Fox
game. You got the five andzero terps, which is where they should
be. I think we talked aboutthat at the beginning of the year when
(49:51):
we said circle that game because theyshould be coming in here ranked and they're
just one out of twenty five fiftyseven and a half. The Buckeyes are
twenty point favorites. Locks Yes,I've known for a long time. There's
some stuff behind that scenes that youknow. But at the year six,
you know he brings friend of me, Josh Gadis back after they had some
(50:14):
what I want to say Drama Acouple of years ago. Kevin Somelan is
on that staff helping with the offense. What you're going to see with offensively
for them is eleven and twelve personnel, one back, one tight end.
That means you go to five. You can teach a kid this When I
say eleven personnel, just common listener, it adds up to five. So
(50:37):
it's one back, one tight end. That means there's three receivers out there,
or they're in twelve personnel, oneback, two tight end. Yeah,
two receivers out there. Okay. Now the storyline is to lee a
tag of aaloa. He's the mosttested quarterback into Big ten. Agreed,
he is. He can sling it. He's been in this system since he
(50:59):
was at Alabama, before he transferredsixty six percent completion, thirteen touchdowns to
only three picks. He's thrown foralmost fifteen hundred yards. Add in his
because he can make plays with hislegs just like his brother could. Three
rushing touchdowns. Here's the thing thatimpresses me with them when I've been watching
them is how much he distributes theball. It's not one or two guys.
(51:22):
They've got six players with double digitcatches this year and like three of
them have eighteen. So the ballsgetting distributed, which means he's seeing things.
You know, they got a threeheaded monster. It was Hippie Himby
and Lyttleton. Now they've added McDonald. They're gonna run a lot of red.
They're gonna run spread, they're gonnarpo, run pass option you,
(51:46):
they're gonna throw shot plays. Lockshas always been good at that with his
offenses, just like the Buckeyes do. He dials up some one on one,
extended over routes, isolated routes forbig hits, for big chunks.
They're skilled. He's done a goodjob recruiting, pretty good job in the
transfer portal. But they're concern Itain't even close. Is their offensive line.
(52:08):
That is by far the weakest placedfor them offensively. But right now
they're fifteenth in score offense, averagingright at thirty nine a game. Go
to the other side of the ball. Perception, you're right, they can
play offense. That's their calling card. It has been. He made a
change at defensive coordinator within a seasona year ago, and what happened just
(52:32):
a different voice. D C.Brian Williams you're going to see three four,
three, three, five. Hemixes it up with odd and even
fronts. They're penetrating, aggressive upthe field. Team he likes to bring
pressures. Their leading tackler is BoBraid at safety, but their standout player
is will linebacker jay Sean Barham.Same concern on this side of the ball,
(52:55):
Paul defensive line. Can they holdup? Which is going to give
us some answers maybe more about theOhio State offensive line. But here here's
the thing. They are third incollege football right now. Twelve takeaways.
They're taking it away, they're goingto have to take it away. And
(53:15):
then you've got the eleventh score defenseonly giving up twelve zero point two to
five points a game. Now there'ssome question about that the record, So
real quick, let's just look atthis. Maryland's defense cannot allow balance,
can't. If a high state comesin and runs the ball, it's going
to be a long day for Maryland. So my question is can Maryland's defensive
(53:37):
front hold up to the OSU runninggame? Can that defense dial up pressures
to get to Kyle McCord and dothey continue to find ways to take the
ball away? Flip side Maryland offense, no question. Can they protect to
Leah? Yeah, you know,I saw Jim Knowles this week was talking
about it, and I think RyanDay about to efforts on defense of the
(54:00):
front end and the back end defending, which tells me they're going to have
a plan to get there with fourand they're going to have a plan to
get there with six. Can theykeep Can the Maryland offense keep Ohio State
in run pass conflict? Kind oflike option football? That's what it is,
is run pass option is you can'tbe right? Is can they get
(54:24):
some plays that are some give mes? Because Mike coach Locksley likes RPO.
He's actually one of the first onesto do it with Juice Williams of Illinois
kind of really was was one ofthe first people to run with it.
And then are they able to helpoffensively help t Leah with run game success?
(54:45):
That would be maybe my biggest concernif I'm Maryland because if the high
State defensive line shows up, it'sgoing to be a tough day for Maryland.
I believe that. So Keyser OhioState, the close Paul balance,
I talked about it. On theother side, the ball run, the
ball open it up for some bigshot plays, which you know they can
do to protect Kyle McCord with Marylandlooks that are attacking and multiple and don't
(55:12):
give it away defensively. Again, they need to win it up front.
They need to tackle. You know, a lot of times when we've got
this play in that play that didyou tackle? Because Maryland is like Ohio
State skilled on the perimeter, andif those guys are in space and Ohio
State guys miss tackles, those arebigger plays. So let's see if they
can tackle and again get to Taliawith the front four advantage Ohio State,
(55:38):
I believe that. And last, but not least, you know, you
got to have a rain plan.As you said, we maybe getting some
rain that matter. It's say fiftyfive and rain in the forecast Saturday,
and yeah, a cool day.Did the Buckeye fans show up? Are
they going to be loud enough tohelp defend t Leah in that offense with
communication problems which is a definite advantage. And that's another way without the players
(56:00):
doing it, of possibly slowing themdown getting some pre snap penalties to get
them in longer situations. It makesit even harder for that Maryland offense.
But the bottom line, a highstate shows up. I respect Maryland,
but if Ohio State shows up,they'll have a good day. But the
biggest advantage for Maryland is their quarterbackcompared to Coy McCord, just because he's
(56:22):
done it very well for a longtime. Yeah, Tale it's fun to
watch. He is a lot offun. Yeah, so make it a
point to watch that game. Itis twelve noon and on Saturday, it's
on Fox. Next week we'll talkabout the peacock game. That's got a
lot of people biting their tongue alittle bit. Coach, great stuff,
as always enjoyed. This week broughtgreat games. You brought it man,
(56:45):
Oh I love putting this show together. October Fest, Yeah, probably have
one or two of those over theweekend. We went to an october Fest
in Pennsylvania last week. No itwas it was Youngstown boardman. Boardman,
OHI carryon, found somewhere for usto stop en route to our stay.
And yeah, I love good Germanbeer man. Give me a Marsen,
(57:07):
give me a half of eason,and I'm a happy guy. I mean,
you know my last name, youknow how I like it cold I'm
