is Paul James coach. Thank youso much for the party favors. Appreciate
you. My friend got a coldpop to start us here before the well
you might have to reach over thereand give me another one here in a
minute. We can do that.We can do that. How you do
it? Paul. It's good tosee you, my friend. Christ some
(00:21):
Christmas get togethers with some friends andsome family, and you know, I'm
just I am in Christmas spirit.Going home tonight, gonna gonna watch Disney's
Christmas Carol. Love that version.I'm a Robert Zamechas fan. That's the
one with Jim Carrey. I loveit. The Christmas Carol. I love.
I think it's uh and I likeall the different adaptations to it.
(00:43):
And some of them are dark, some of them are silly, but I
tend to watch a lot of those. So I'm gonna tough guy, buddies,
are you serious? So the voiceis over as of Tuesday night.
Yep. Uh. The love wasn'tthere this much this year. Reeve did
a great job at She Ain't Blakeand then but my wife missus Christmas.
(01:06):
We watch Christmas movies throughout the Christmasseason. Sure, and my buddy called.
He said, what are you doing. I said, I'm watching the
Muppets of Christmas, Carol. Ilove we keep getting through Uh, I
mean you name it. We've watchedThe Candle not the d I hadn't watched
it for maybe thirty forty years.I love it. It's one of my
favorite. Yeah, it's uh butyeah, and tonight, like, I
(01:27):
just do know, Beaker flips offUh, I do Scrooge. He's only
got three fingers and it's his middlefinger. Most people don't know that,
but Baker flips off Scrooge. I'mjust saying, hey, he doesn't.
He ain't got much to say,but he knows sign like and then uh
yet tonight, I just told youwe're going to uh for the first time,
the Upper Sandusky Light Show. You'lllove it. Little Pizza from Don
(01:51):
Tomasso's. And then we're gonna comeback and I can guarantee you watch some
kind of Christmas show. We havea good night ahead, man, that'll
be fun too. Yeah. Absolutely, there are some great games and we
got a lot to talk about today. But a few things real quick,
go ahead. You know, Christmasand bold seasons upon us. But some
interesting holiday things this week. We'vegot a day after the early signing day
(02:14):
today and all the flips. Ohthe craziness. How about your Browns?
I am. Let me tell yousomething. My buddy text me. I
was cooking dinner on Sunday. I'mwatching the game, and he threw that
interception right at the goal line, this third interception, and my buddy said,
I'm turning off. I'm done.I said, no, man,
I said, do not turn itoff. I said, there's a lot
(02:35):
of football left. He's texting meagain, going, I can't believe they
won that game. I said,I watched it. It just slipped my
mind. My son's gonna be upsetwith me. The kicker's name is the
Browns kicking. Oh yeah, he'sI mean, seriously, I mean it's
my special teams matter. Well,he's had a heck of a year and
he's punner. Has hit two seventyfive yard punts this season. How important
(02:58):
is it to flip the field? There? There's special teams coordinator is up
for Special Teams Coach of the Yearand he should be. They're fantastic and
Jim Schortz will be up for defensivecoaches lose, no doubt. And then
you got your boys Mac Brown andDave Dorn down there. It'spatting back and
forth and class list, and thenanother news week for the Michigan Wolverines and
(03:22):
coach Harball as alleged recruiting violations comeback from the COVID year and last,
but not least, as Big Mosaid before he walked out, little drama
in Tallahassee, is what's going togo on with that Board of Regents meeting.
Is FSU gonna put a pound inor break up the acc or put
(03:43):
a hurting on them? Interesting times, Paul, Well, that in obviously
Chip Kelly's comments after the U cl A game over the weekend and his
you know, like he said,he goes, I haven't put any thought
into this, but I mean whathe said makes a lot of sense,
and you know, and now alot of people are jumping on that bandwagon,
going, yeah, maybe the modelfor college football should be all independence.
(04:08):
And you deal with four regions aroundaround the country and sixty four teams
of the top five and sixty fourteams of the bottom fives. If you
Will. I don't disagree with anyof that. They've screwed around with what
has been terrific, even when itwas just two teams. The greatest sport
(04:30):
on Earth in my opinion, sometimesI think it's golf, but college football.
And yeah, here's the thing.Chip Kelly is a very intelligent person,
absolutely, and what he said, for the most part, in my
opinion, not remembering verbatim everything thatwas said, so I'll give myself a
little leeway with that, but hewas pretty much spot on. Yeah,
and here's everything. I've used thisexample many times on the show. You
(04:55):
can get Apollo thirteen back to Earth. It's fixable. So yeah, there's
some things they can do to improveit. And it was funny when I
was on the phone out there whenyou came to let me in. Is
the Ernie Adams Will said, Aja, this twelve team ain't gonna last long,
right, It's going to have tobe more r and his reasons where
I don't have time to get intoit, I'm thinking, that's pretty keen.
(05:16):
So he was making some very solidpoints. One of the things that
Chip Kelly said that I really appreciateand agree with is why do we have
nil when we have the opportunity todo it as a revenue sharing type opportunity
with the student athletes that are here. I like that idea. Let's set
(05:36):
you know, not necessarily a salarycap, but we've got to set and
you talked, you've talked about itall season. Where are the guardrails.
We've got to create the guardrails. We've got to figure it out. Instead
of nil, why don't we doit as a revenue share and then we've
got these guys. Instead of givingX amount of money to a guy driving
his Lamborghini into Mississippi State or Mississippiall missed to sign his NIL, Well,
(06:01):
let's let's let's fund the program andthen the program has the money and
then they can work it out asa revenue share with the players that come
there. I that was one ofthe points that I literally went, he's
a genius. He's absolutely right. That's a great idea. But well,
as usual, they'll put together committeeand he'll figure out. Mike Leech is
(06:24):
rolling over right now with you talkingabout committees. But you know the other
thing that's on my mind is,you know, we we've done all this
stuff in the portal in Ohio Statehasn't taken anybody out of the portal yet.
I get it. They're getting readyfor a huge game. A lot
of guys are going to be playing. We'll talk about that when we get
together next week because I'm excited aboutthe Buckeye players and the Missouri players that
(06:45):
are all going to play. Theyhave no opt outs on Missouri. By
the way, Drinklage popped in todayand said that there's no one's, no
one's, no one's opted out,and I think that's fantastic. They want
to know what that is because theywant to play the Buckeyes. Well,
it's culture, Okay, it hasa lot. Well, I like Eli.
I think I know you do too. You've talked highly of him all
(07:06):
season. But you know, withall that going on and their thing that
Chip Kelly said, he's right,is why in God's name are we doing
signing Day when we're supposed to begetting ready for bowl games? You know?
I agree? How important was signingday? When you think about it?
And I thought about this a lot. When those kids don't get a
(07:29):
chance to play because they're freshmen, they're true freshmen. They're going into a
Power five conference, They're going intoone of the elite teams that's building their
program on the second and third yearplayers. When those guys don't get a
play in the first year, aren'tthey all going to bolt anyway and go
somewhere else, take the knowledge theyget at Ohio State or Georgia or Oregon
(07:50):
and maybe not get enough snaps sothey leave. I mean, are we
putting too much emphasis on this knowingthat they're just going to walk in the
current situation and the current way we'reset up for college football. Well,
I think there's that goes a lotof different avenues. It depends And I'm
for and I've said this many times, and most coaches would say the same
(08:11):
thing. It's all about what's bestfor the players, right, And sometimes
the opportunity to leave is the bestthing for the player. Sometimes when the
kid leaves, it was the bestthing for the coaches could be that way
from record, the fact that hedidn't care so he walked away and went
to Syracuse. Okay, whatever,Yeah, I mean it just and I
agree with the signing day. There'sthings with the calendar. We talked about
(08:33):
it last week. Transfer portal,Hey, why can't they figure out you
know, most schools start the secondweek middle of January. Well, there's
too much going on that This isa whole We've talked about this before,
is what they've done with the calendar, with early signing period, transfer portal,
It's it's a nightmare for football coaches. I'm just telling free agency doesn't
(08:54):
start in pro sports until the dayafter the season's over, right, we're
talking the playoff season. It wasa good temple there too, Absolutely,
yeah, get a committee, yeah, But I just it frustrated me because
so many people are like, oh, they didn't do this, or they
did this, or all these peopleturned and flipped and all the To me,
it was just a lot of dramaabout a lot of guys who may
(09:16):
not ever pan out. It's thesame way I look at the NFL Draft.
It's like, until they get outon a football field and do what
CJ. Stroud has done this year, did you really have the best draft
pick versus what you know? Alot of people talking about the differences and
why CJ went second, and Ijust but it's like, until they get
on the field, improve what theycan do and stay healthy and get going.
(09:39):
I just there's just so many questionmarks and so much money flying based
on question marks. It's almost likegambling. Right, It's a world gone
mad. It's crazy. It's crazy. Hey, let's talk about some of
these games. It happened in thelast week. We've had some fun with
the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Ohio endsup winning that game forty one to twenty
one. And coach that game wasall about turnovers, wasn't it. Yeah,
(10:01):
And I repeat myself from last week. Georgia Southern's now six and seven
instead of a winning season, ohU's now ten and three. Great back
to back here's by coach Alvin andthat staff. Hey, no, Curtis
Rourke, Yeah, uh, he'sheaded Indiana. So Parker Navarro, it's
your turn to step up and hedid. No. Say Bangora now running
(10:22):
back to Minnesota in the portal. But Ricky Hunt steps up for the Bobcats.
Oh, you had a fast start, Georgia. It's hard, as
you put it already noted to overcomefive five turnovers and OU none. So
you're negative five and the turnovers. You ain't gonna win that game. But
the OU defense stepped up five takeawayshold Georgia to Southern to thirty three.
(10:46):
Rushing yards. Yeah, I'll tellyou what this game was worth it.
If you're one of these ones thatare like, you know what, I'm
not watching all those bowl games inthe middle of December, you missed a
great one the New Orleans Bowl.Jacksonville State thirty four, Louisiana thirty one.
That game went overtime. It didnot disappoint No, And hey,
look it wasn't a good match atMichigan, and things didn't work out at
(11:09):
Arizona. But Rich Rodriguez can coach, and he's always had, for the
most part, really good offenses. But yeah, Jacksonville State now nine and
four with that thirty four to thirtyone OT win over Louisiana. Who is
now again here's another one six andseven. Quarterback Zion Web is the opposite
of what we just talked. Ithink it was his seventh season. I
(11:30):
think the Jacksonville State loyal late gamedrives that he led. He didn't play
a perfect game, but he playedwell late running back Round Wiggins one hundred
and twenty six yards. The teamrushed, and that's one thing Rich Rodriguez's
teams have always been able to doin the spread is run the ball,
and they out rush Louisville or Louisianatwo ninety to ninety two. But Garrison
(11:52):
Rippe, the freshman kicker, it'shis turn to shine. I think he
had three kicks all year he wentat an overtime, he had two for
two for field goals, four forfour with a pat with the one and
ot to win it. And it'svery rare the opposite in this game to
overcome four turnovers. But Jacksonville Statedid it. One of the big reasons
(12:15):
is Rich Rod's offense was five ofsix on fourth down to keep the possession.
Well, how about this one.Conditions were horrible in the Cure Bowl.
But Appalachian State beats Miami thirteen tonine. But boy, they played
in some crummy weather. Well,if you've coached very long at all,
you've coached in a game like that, and it's not fun. Miami now
(12:39):
eleven and three. Appy State nowwith thirteen to nine win, is at
nine and five for the season.Miami no Brett Gabbert or Arian Smith at
quarterback, so Maddox cop and HenryHesson's cher and they passed for a total
of forty four yards. But Miamirunning back for Shad Amos did show up
one hundred and eighty yards on thirtythree carries. Appy State their quarterback Joey
(13:01):
Aguilars had a good year. Theyfind a way in that mess of that
wet, wet day, one hundredand seventy seven passing yards in that monsoon.
It was poor footing, it wasloose balls, it was a combined
six turnovers. You got to havea plan for rain games. I've learned
on lesson hard You got to havea plan. Absolutely. The New Mexico
(13:22):
Bowl brought a ton of drama, but not necessarily on the field. Fresno
State beat New Mexico State thirty sevento ten. Coach two hundred yards of
offense for New Mexico State. You'renot going to win a bowl game.
Yeah, Fresno State gets to nineand four and New Mexico State got to
play their fifteenth game of the yearin the loss, going ten to five.
But yeah, the history of quarterbackDiego Pavia back early in the season
(13:48):
relieving himself on the logo of theindoor facility there in Albuquerque, led to
postgame drama between Jerry Kill accusing NewMexico ad Eddie Nunez. I've heard both
sides of the story. Always, they're two different stories. Fresno State quarterback
Mikey Keene We've alluded to a coupletimes this year. Big Day three eighty
thirty one for thirty nine. That'sthe heck of a day with three touchdowns,
(14:09):
the defense four sacks on Diego Pavia, seven tackles for loss. That's
a great job. The negative NewMexico State was five of seventeen on third
and fourth down, and as youhad already alluded to, it's hard to
win when you only get two hundredyards offense. Yeah. Absolutely. The
other game that brought a lot ofdrama post game, which we talked about
(14:31):
earlier, was the La Bowl whereUCLA wins thirty five to twenty two over
Boise State. Second half offense forUCLA was unreal, and then after the
game that is when Chip Kelly decidedto tell everybody his plans for what college
football should be. Yeah, youknow, Boise State obviously was hot late
with the coaching change and later inthe season, but this was a big
(14:54):
needed win for chip Kelly agreed, there was a lot of smoke there and
for them to find a way towin thir thirty five twenty two to get
to eight and five. As youmentioned, UCLA is down sixteen seven.
I'm watching it at half, butwhen you win the second half twenty eight
to six. They were good onboth sides of the ball in the second
half, and they did it withoutDante Moore. Dante more Is often running
(15:16):
in the portal, so Ethan Garber'sand Colin Schlee had a combination at the
position to quarterback that was good enoughobviously for them to win. But Ucla
offensively, red zone offense and zeroturnovers was good enough to win and good
for the Bruins absolutely. The Independenceball had Texas Tech blowout Cal thirty four
(15:37):
to thirteen. Three first half touchdownsfor the Raiders, and that was it.
Again, I don't over exaggerate this. When you have that taste in
your mouth of a winning or alosing season, you know Texas Tech dominates
the game thirty four to fourteen. Both go in six and six. Well,
Cal six and seven. Hey,Texas Tech, with a very slow
start to their season, finds away to have a winning season. Texas
(16:00):
Tech defense after the first quarter pitchesa shutout the rest of the way,
and as quarterback Baron Morton has gonefor Texas in the second Texas Tech in
the second half of the season,so does the team twenty seven to forty
three, two fifty six, threetouchdowns. Kl couldn't run it. Its
offense gave up six acts four turnovers. Again credit Texas Tech defense with that,
(16:23):
and truly, if you watch thegame, they really won the game
in all three phases. So Mondayafternoon had a chance to sit down and
watch the Famous Toastery Bowl. Andmy number one goal was to answer for
you what is famous about the ToasteryBowl. And the company is actually called
Famous Toastery and it's a breakfast andlunch brunch type restaurant, is what it
(16:45):
is. That's what Famous Toastery. Is there a breakfast, lunch brunch kind
of place that sells their own Iguess it's really really good. But anyway,
the Famous Toastery Ball had Western Kentuckyand Old Dominion thirty eight to thirty
five. Coach WKU was down twentyeight to nothing. I'm texting you they
brought that game, won it overtime, won it on a block field
(17:07):
goal, and they overcame five turnovers. Well, I believe WKU helped Toastery's
claim of being famous out in thisgame because WKU finishes the year at eight
and five. ODU another one nowsix and seven. But I have so
many friends. Obviously we live there. Eight years I coached there. The
(17:30):
amount of opt outs at WKU wasincredibly high. That means this was a
great win WKU. As you said, down twenty eight to nothing comes back
with caden Velt Camp. And ifpeople don't know, no, Austin Reid,
he's not playing in the game. But caden Velt Camp went to South
(17:52):
Warren High School in Bowling Green,Kentucky. His father is the head of
strength and conditioning at WKU for thefootball program. He listen, Paul,
this is unbelievable to me. Hethrew fifty two passes. He threw fifty
three for the year. Yeah,he had throwed one forward pass the entire
year forty fifty two three eighty three, five touchdowns, one I and T.
(18:15):
The ODU goal line overtime penalty onthe inside. The one was critical,
Yes, and that led to anothermister blocked field goal where they were
for three and the WKU field goalwins it for the Toppers in overtime.
A great game. The emotion ofthat kid after the game, we had
(18:37):
tears running down his face. Imean, here's a local boy. You
know, his dad's in the program. I mean, it was it was
everything about college football this time ofyear that you love. And if you
had missed it because you are atwork, I'm sorry to tell you,
but yeah, go ahead and bringme an over. It was a fantastic
football game. Like I said, coach and I were texting back and forth.
So let's talk about the Frisco Bowl. U TSA thirty five, Marshall
(19:00):
seventeen. UTSA shut out Marshall inthe second half. Marshall didn't even smell
the end zone in the second half. No UTSA. If you watch,
they're down fourteen to nothing and you'rethinking, Okay, this isn't because I'm
all about, not all about, but a lot about trends. Absolutely,
and Marshall had, as we talkedabout, had had some season changes or
(19:21):
coaching changing since the end of theyear because it didn't go as well as
they had hoped this season. Buta thirty five to three run to win
it for the road Runners. Marshallhas lost in six of their last eight
games. The UTSA defense after thatslow start six sacks, six sacks,
nine tackles for loss. UTSA wasgood in the red zone, had more
(19:45):
explosion plays. Marshall struggled in thered zone. They also missed two field
goals, so they lose the kickingbattle. Again. UTSA wins the special
teams phase. They were better inthe red zone on both sides of the
ball, and they were better onthird down on both sides of the ball.
Yeah. Absolutely, Let's get startedwith the games that kick off tonight.
There is there's one at eight o'clocktonight, South Florida and Syracuse play
(20:08):
down in Boca Ratone. Another headto head six and six teams. Yeah,
and tonight the first game for headnew head coach Fran Brown there with
the Orangeman quarterback Garrett Strader is out. Did not opt out. It was
a medical procedure that he chose togo ahead and have. They're playing a
game tonight with the guy that's alot more one dimensional, so that could
(20:30):
be a problem. Let's talk aboutwhat Alex Gallish has done at USF.
He inherited a one and eleven footballteam. He's a pretty young guy.
They find a way to win.He goes one and eleven to seven and
six. That's a plus six turnaround. That is significant. So he's done
a great job again opt outs andtrends. Syracuse has lost six of their
(20:52):
last eight. They just had acoaching change and a new quarterback is on
their way in to lead the Orangemanprobably next year in Comic Cord, that's
right. And tomorrow six point thirty, we've got the Gasparilla bull Georgia Tech,
who at the beginning of the seasoncould have been ranked as one of
the worst teams in the entire country. And that is no lie taking on
(21:12):
Central Florida who's had kind of aseason. Yeah, similar story, same
thing. You got a UCF sittingthere as a five and a half point
favorite. Two six and six teams. I will say the trend again for
UCF is one. Three of theirlast four are Haines King and Rice Plumbley
John Rice Plumbley playing. That's abig question mark obviously. It sounds like
(21:34):
both are both of these teams bestside of the ball has been offense the
entire year. Georgia Tech's last twolosses at Clemson and against the Bulldogs,
who they competed with pretty well.I like UCF advantage with less turnovers on
the year and their quarterback and morerun game. Okay, if you're settling
(21:57):
in for the weekend to watch alot of football, By the way,
the NFL plays Thursday, Friday,Saturday, Sunday and all day Monday.
If you weren't that game, it'scrazy. But honey, will you watch?
It's at least open to gifts, right. I don't think the first
NFL game Saturday or Monday starts untilone though. Well. The good news
(22:18):
is my father in law, myson, my brother in laws enjoy watching
football too, So I like thefact that fourteen NFL teams get to be
showcased this weekend with they're the onlyones playing at those times. I like
that idea. That's nice. Butwith that going on, we've got a
ton of college football on Saturday,Birmingham Bowl starts at noon. That's Troy
(22:38):
and Duke. Yeah, eleven andtwo Troy seven and a half point favorites
against seven and five Duke. Theover under is low opt out. You
got two new coaches, Manny Diazin at Duke, elco to a and
m Troy. My man Jared Parkerwho slept on my couch in my house
in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Severaltimes the new head coach at Troy's coach
(23:00):
SUMMRL to Tulane. Troy's off often straight wins. They have been defending
well. I think Gunner Watson isplaying for at quarterback. If you haven't
watched him, there's a good reasonto watch that game. Thirty four hundred
yards, twenty seven touchdowns to onlyfive picks on the year. I like
Duke, yeah, I'm sorry.I like Troy Troy. Yeah, they
got a lot of good things goingon. The Camellia Bowl also is at
(23:22):
noon on the twenty third Saturday.Arkansas State, who a couple of years
ago played the Buckey, has wonone game that year. They're in a
bull game now in Northern Illinois. You know interesting with this game again,
two six and six teams Saturday noonESPN. Butch Jones has survived top five
hot seat going in. He winsthis. He goes to seven wins when
(23:45):
last year I think they had two. Yeah, that's plus five. Then
you look Thomas Hammock. Things areheating up for him. Makes some wholesale
changes offensively during the season to helpwin five of their last seven games,
which takes some guts to help himsurvive. Arkanstate quarterback Jalen Rayner is he
(24:06):
playing I don't know. I doknow Rocky Lombardi is playing for NIU.
Really, in my opinion, we'llsee if I'm right. I think it
comes down to who wins the rushinggame in this bowl game. I got
you a game a lot of peopleare looking forward to because they have not
seen James Madison. The Armed Forcesball is at three point thirty on Saturday.
Air Force James Madison. Of course, JMU their first opportunity playing a
(24:29):
bowl game after an amazing season.Yeah, it's great to see him in.
They're a two point favored against anAir Force team that at one point
was eight and oh yeah, andnow they're eight and four. We talk
about trends, but JMU coach KurtSignetti is now the headball coach at Indiana.
It's one of those deals when thesethings happen. Are the players motivated
because of that or are they distractedbecause of that. JMU last game,
(24:56):
fifty six to fourteen win over CoastalCarolina. Seen a lot of opt outs
at JMU, And if you haven'twatched JMU quarterback Jordan McLoud watched the kid
play thirty four hundred yards thirty twotouchdowns to his nine. I in ts
He's mobile. He's rushed for overthree hundred yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
I'm gonna roll with the Jordan McLeodand JMU against the Air Force. I
(25:19):
get you. Saturday three thirty, the Idaho and Tato Bull Georgia State takes
on Utah State. Utah State wassupposed to be really good at the beginning
of the season, and it didn'tquite get it done. Do you think
when they put these together, theysay, let's get one fan base pissed
off for the air because they're gonnabe six and seven, and let's make
the other fan base, hey,we had a winning season with another six
(25:40):
and six. Utahs State is atwo and a half point favorite. Georgia
State has lost five straight and sixof its last eight. Georgia State's defense
gives up thirty one a game.Utass State won three of their last four,
but their defense gives up also thirtyfour per game. So take the
under over at fifty nine and ahalf. What would be concerning Utah State
(26:03):
has eighteen has thrown eighteen interceptions onthe year, so they have to take
care of it for a chance toget to seven and six. Now,
that's why Utah State was supposed tobe good. They weren't supposed to turn
the ball over quite that much.Moving on to the sixty eight ventures,
Bawl, I have no idea whatthat is seven o'clock on Saturday, South
Alabama and Eastern Michigan. Paul, you want to get the two teams records
(26:26):
six and six, baby, ButSouth al is a big favorite in this
game seventeen points, the biggest favoriteI think in the Bowl games. Eastern
Michigan averages twenty points a game.On offense, they've had their struggle where
South Alabama is right at thirty two. Eastern Michigan allows twenty four points a
game. Alabama holds people to lessthan that, and they've got a body
(26:49):
of work of twelve games, obviously, and if you look at their schedules
both six and six, South Alabama'shas a more favorable in terms of better
competition in my opinion, So Ilike South Aisle. There you go.
The Vegas bull is at seven thirtySaturday, Utah and Northwestern and man,
that could be a really fun gamebecause Northwestern's raad to play some more football.
(27:15):
Well, you've had the story ofan eight and four Utah team that's
been a mash unit the entire year. Not just a quarterback with rising,
but the entire team has had thatjust devastated with injuries. They're six and
a half point favorite. It's alow over under at forty one and a
half. Again, Northwestern sitting thereat seven to five. They're guaranteed no
matter what. They had a winningseason after winning I think one football game
and firing their head coach. Greatjob coach Brock. Yeah, and right
(27:38):
before the season started. Yeah,And this is one of the best feel
good stories in college football this yearin my opinion. Kyle Whittingham's defense still
only gives up nineteen a game. That's what's going to keep the score down.
That's gonna make it hard for Northwestern. But Northwestern only gives up twenty
four game. If people didn't payattention, they had one of the better
defenses in the Big Ten and that'swhat kept them in games. But quarterback
(28:00):
play and turnovers will be the key. I still like Utah. What I
like about this game coach and you'llunderstand this because of what you've done your
entire life. When you put Utahup against Northwestern, those have got to
be two of the toughest major collegefootball jobs in the country. Number One,
You've got Utah where you've got playersthat take a year off because of
(28:22):
their religious stuff and things like that, and who wants to go to Utah
and play football? And then yougot Northwestern in Utah is the same way.
You've got to have the grades andthem some to get in there.
I mean, these are two very, very tough football jobs, and they're
both good football teams. So he'snot underestimated anymore. I mean, urban
Meyer said, they're great friends. He was on his staff. He thinks
(28:45):
the world of him. If youdon't remember, urban Meyer said, I
learned the importance of toughness from KyleWhittingham. Kyle Whittingham is outstanding as a
football coach. Should be a fungame to watch ten thirty on Saturday the
Hawaii boll Coastal Carolina and San JoseState, two warm weather teams getting together
in Hawaii. Yeah, so Coastalsitting there. They lose last two games
(29:08):
to Army and JMU quarterback Grayson McCallis gone, so freshman Ethan Vasco looks
like it's going to get the startat quarterback. It's a long way,
Paul, from Myrtle Beach, SouthCarolina to Hawaii, San Jose State.
If you haven't watched their ten pointfavorites in this game, head football coach
(29:29):
Brent Brennan gets to another Bowl afterseven seasons. That's an underestimated job that
he's done. They have won sixstraight. They're one of the hottest teams
in college football. Quarterback Chavon Cordero, if you haven't watched, he's fun
to watch. They're balanced on offenseas Kyrie Robinson has over eleven hundred yards
rushing for the year. And haveyou heard the drama with that that came
(29:49):
up today with who the head coachat Coastal Carolina was in Hawaii and got
a picture with just As no shirton, just As his swim trunks with
the entire dance team in bikinis, and they put it up on their social
media page and they took it downa half an hour later, So they
must have got some serious heat forthat one. Wait you go, coach,
(30:10):
Yeah, yeah, go to Hawaiiango go to on a business trip
and get pictured with your forty fiveyear old head coach. I don't know
how old he is. He usedto be the offensive coordinator out of state.
But interestingly enough so a little dramaalready with that quick Lane Bowl.
This is always a fun game. And I'll tell you, if you got
(30:30):
nothing going on Tuesday, drive upto Detroit and buy a ticket because you
can buy them. Okay, therewon't be that many people there, but
fun bowl game always. Bowling Greenin Minnesota two o'clock on Tuesday. One
of the biggest wins Bowling Green's hadfor coach Leffler's staff was when they upset
Minnesota. Yeah, and credit him. They were in a bad place with
(30:52):
personnel and he survived the hot seat. He's sitting there at seven and five.
You know, if they find away to beat Minnesota, who's only
a three and a half point favorite, sitting there at five and seven because
we didn't have enough six win teams. Yeah, Bowling Green getting eight and
five is a big deal for coachLeffler and that staff, and again trends.
Minnesota has lost their last four gamesand have struggled doing so. Minnesota
(31:18):
quarterback Kle Kramer. I don't knowif you've heard the story. I think
he was paid to stay and playbecause I think he's the only quarterbacks still
there on roster. Go the optouts, you don't know who's opting out.
We do know Connor Bazilak will bethe trigger man for the Bowling Green
Falcons as of today. But greatjob, hot seat to winning six of
(31:40):
his last eight and the chance toget the eight wins. I'll say it,
go Falcons, and the weather willbe perfect in Fort great place to
watch again, oh aut That's whyI say you can get a ticket for
next to nothing. The parking willbe a few bucks. You'll have a
good time if you drive up thereand watch that first Responderbowl. Also on
Tuesday five thirty, Texas State andRice. Rice was supposed to have a
really good season. They didn't quiteget where they wanted to be though.
(32:02):
Yeah, but they can get toseven and six with a win. Look
for points to be scored here.Texas State is a five and a half
point favorite, but Texas State afew weeks ago gives up seventy seven points
to Arkansas State and then they comeback and beat South Alabama, so a
little jackal and Hyde. But quarterbackTJ. Finley for Texas State can play
(32:24):
thirty three hundred yards twenty four touchdownsto eight picks, and they can run
if they average about five yards ofcarry. Rice has had three stronger opponents
late and lost and beat two lesseropponents that were struggling, and J.
T. Daniels has left Rice andAJ Padgett will be the quarterback. We
got another opt out Q and Ricehas to find a way to run the
(32:45):
ball to score in this game.So before Michigan played Penn State, their
best win on the season was UNLVBelieve it or not. They play Tuesday
night, nine o'clock in the guaranteedrate ball against a good Kansas team.
Too well coached teams. You gotcoach Leipold obviously what he's done at Kansas
and what Barry Odom's done in aquick order of business at UNLV points will
(33:07):
be scored. Kansas is a twelveand a half point favorite. You never
know what this is going to play. I think he's coaching in the game.
But offensive coordinating nator Andy kotal Nikkiis now the new play caller at
Penn State and sometimes this could bean issue for the team that lost their
O. C Jayalen Daniels. NoJason Bean Cole Ballard's back a quarterback for
(33:30):
Kansas. The thing is UNLV iscoming off back to back losses to San
Jose State and Boise State. Butquarterback the freshman Jaden my Ava supposed to
play and UNLV's defense for Barry Odamsneeds to show up. Yeah, military
ball. This game is on Wednesdayat two o'clock. Virginia Tech and Tulane.
(33:52):
Tulane had an amazing season. Yeahthey're sitting there in eleven and two,
but the problem is they lost lateand then they lost their head football
coach Willie Fritz is out. JohnSummerll is in another big game for Virginia
Tech because they could get this thingin a second year of a staff to
seven and six with the win,and they're actually ten and a half point
(34:13):
favorites and are trending with four oftheir last six games been to win.
Virginia Tech gives up twenty five pointsper game, Tulane gives up nineteen.
That's why you got that low overand under. But supposedly Tulane quarterback Michael
Pratt is supposed to play and they'restill a ten point point dog. I
don't know what's up with that withVegas, but they know. Maybe it's
(34:36):
the Willy Fritz is Gone effect.I am going to recommend you watch The
Duke's Mayo Bull. I have watchedit the last several years. They've been
good games the last several years.I mean Maryland played last year, Cincinnati
was in it. There's been somereally good games. And it's gonna be
on Wednesday of five thirty. NorthCarolina West Virginia. Two teams that aren't
very far apart, and they don'tlike each other too much. That's a
(34:59):
nice matchup, it is. Andwho would you rather see get the Mayo
bath? Would it be Mac Brownor Neil Brown? Not related? Yeah,
West Virginia both teams sitting here ateight and four, six and a
half point favorite. Neil Brown thatsaved his job this year and now it
could get to a ninth win.You got a pissed off Mac Brown,
You got no Drake may West Virginia'swon four of their last five. Defenses
(35:21):
on both sides of the ball aresimilar, but WVU quarterback Garrett Green is
playing, which is a big dealfor West Virginia, probably why they're favored.
And again you and see the otherways lost two and four of their
last six. But again, agreat season so far for what Neil Brown's
done at West Virginia. Yeah, another game with a ton of history that
goes all the way back to whenwe were kids. That's a holiday ball.
(35:43):
It's Wednesday night at eight to twentyseventh, number fifteen, Louisville against
USC. That's a very interesting matchupsbecause of some of the opt outs too.
It is, you know, Louisvillegreat year, but didn't end the
way they would like attend. They'resitting there at ten and three, fifteenth
in the country. They are sevenand a half point favorites USC. Obviously
(36:07):
we know what their struggles have been. This is the opt out Bowl.
I know because I've talked to go. Louisville has lost a lot in the
portal or opted out of the gameboth sides. It's not just Caleb Williams
for USC as well. There area lot out on special teams special teams
players on both sides in this game. But Jack Plumber will play at quarterback
(36:30):
for Louisville, so that gives theman advantage with their starter coming back,
and it looks like it's going tobe red shirt sophomore Miller Moss pulling the
trigger for coach Lincoln Riley edge toLouisville because of their defense, their twentieth
and scoring in defense, they've beenstingy, only giving up twenty a game.
The Texas Bowl is Wednesday, andthis is two teams that used to
(36:52):
play each other every single solitary year. Should be an interesting game. Texas
A and M and number twenty OklahomaState. Yeah, you got A and
M sitting there at seven and fiveand can't win a game on the road.
That's correct. They can't win agame in Oklahoma. State's sitting there
twenty with a nine and four record. But A and M is the two
(37:13):
point favorite. And these things areinteresting when you have the new coach.
It's a dress rehearsal. I meanhe is watching that game as the new
head coach. I'm talking about MikeAlcove for Texas A and M. And
sometimes you see that give you anelevated effort by the kids that are playing
because they want to impress the guythat's gonna make decision of who's gonna be
on the field on Saturdays. OklahomaState's off off of the loss to Texas
(37:37):
in the Big Twelve Championship. Itwasn't close. Oklahoma State quarterback Alan Bowman
should be taking snaps, but he'sthrown as many interceptions as he has touchdowns,
just one short of that. SophomoreJalen Henderson quarterback for A and M.
He's only had seventy seven attempts buthas only threw two picks. A
(37:58):
and M struggled to run the ballall year in Oklahoma State defense struggled to
stop it. So this is aninteresting matchup and one I wouldn't touch with
a ten foot pole. I gotit. There are like ten games on
Thursday. There's a ton of gamesnext Thursday, and we're going to talk
about a few of them, andthen next week when we have another episode,
we'll talk about a few more. But the first two games of the
day are cold Weather Bowls. TheFenway bull is at eleven o'clock in the
(38:22):
morning. SMU plays against Boston College. That's home standing, but SMU's way
better. Yeah, Jeff Hafley hassaved his job this year, but they
lose their six and seven and they'velost their last three. And I really
am a fan of quarterback Thomas Castellanaswith the plays that he can make with
his throws and his legs, buthe turns it over rtt lashly is eighteen
(38:50):
and eight, I think is wherehe is now at SMU. He's done
a good job. They're sitting thereat eleven and two is eleven point favorites.
Talk about hot. They've won ninthstraight. The last game that was
a conference champion win over Tu Lane, and they have a good balance with
pass and run with quarterback Preston Stoneand running back Jalen Knighton. So I
(39:12):
can see why are double digit favorite, and I would expects some of you
to show up and take it.The Pinstripe Ball is at two fifteen next
Thursday. And here's the interesting thingthere. If you try to catch a
ball on the corner of the endzone, you could slam into the wall.
It is literally seven inches from thecorner. If you've seen a game
at Yankee Stadium, the Pinstripe Ballhas Rutgers in Miami. Yeah, I
(39:36):
mean this is a big game forMario Christen and there's some another layer to
that here. We'll hit in justa minute, and Sheiano just got an
extension. As we talked about lastweek, Siano and Rutgers lose their last
four and he gets an extension.Christal coach christ Bal Miami's lost three of
(39:57):
the last four and the seat hadgotten hot. Both defenses are strong.
Lance Guidry, I've coached with hima lot of energy. He did a
great job at Miami this year.Up for the Brows Award Miami quarterback,
It's going to be Jacry Ward tostart. We think Tyler Van Dyke is
now with coach Fickle in Wisconsin andhe Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wims It has had
(40:23):
an okay season because he's turned itover as much as he's thrown touchdown passes.
But who knows. We know thisis going to be a defensive battle.
That's why you got a forty anda half. The Canes are just
a one point favorite. That thisshould be a really good football. Yeah,
it should be a very competitive game. Then we're going to talk about
the pop Tarts ball. This willbe the last one we talk about on
the show today. That's at fiveforty five a week from Thursday, on
(40:45):
the twenty eighth, number eighteen NCState great season Number twenty five. Kansas
State should be a good game.Yeah, n C State got the right
at the ship. They've won fivein a row, they won of their
last seven, and they struggled mightilyoffensively, and a lot of that has
to be because of the way BrennanArmstrong started the year. But when they
(41:07):
put him back in as a starterin the last third of the season,
he played like he did at Virginiaand the reason they wanted him there at
NC State. Here's another question. If you haven't watched Peyton Wilson is one
of the best defenders in the country, the linebacker for n C State.
He has still had not made adecision as of today. In k State,
(41:29):
Will Howard is no longer their triggerman. He is now going to
be the quarterback at USC and there'ssome other portal losses. I'm actually a
little bit surprised KSE State's the favoritein this game because of the things that
I just said. I like NCState in this game, and the last
one Paul I will hit because I'veprepared is the Alamo Bowl absolutely Thursday,
(41:51):
where you've got the nine to threesurprise. Great job. Jedfish, winner
of sixth straight there for Arizona. They are three point favorites against Oklahoma,
who's sitting there ten and two. Now, Oklahoma had the third highest scoring
offense in college football, but thatwas with Dylan Gabriel, and Dylan Gabriel
(42:12):
is replacing probably bo Nix when Isay that, if he wins the job.
But he's an Oregon Duck. Andif you haven't watched, you get
to watch. I think Arizona quarterbackNoah Fafiita that I've talked about all year,
if you've not watched him play,he is a joy to watch play.
A big question though, two isColeman Jonah Coleman and ted Taria McMillan
(42:35):
playing at running back and receiver forArizona. If that's the case, I
like where Vegas has Arizona in thisgame is a favorite. Yeah, you
know, I wanted to see Arizonaplay Missouri in a bowl game because I
thought they were the two hottest upand coming teams in college football. I
thought that'd be a matchup. Ithink the Buckeye matchup with them is going
to be great. We will betalking about that next week, talking about
(42:57):
the fact that all the Missouri playersare planning on playing. No one's opting
out. Ohio State has a tonof players that are in it. Nobody's
really opting out for Ohio State either. Next Friday nights game could be a
really, really good football game forboth of those teams. And I'm looking
forward to it, and we're goingto talk about it next week because that'll
be fun. But before we doany of that, before we wrap this
show up, we got to findout to win the Day Award because there
(43:20):
were so many things that went onin the world of sports in the last
week, and so much drama andso many stories. I mean, from
the world of golf with Tiger playingwith his son and daily playing with his
son, to everything that's going onin the NFL to the craziness of the
NBA season. We got to findout who coach thinks won the Day in
the last week. Well, Igot some really good nominees. Anybody here's
(43:45):
my first nominee. Any man thathas done shopping at Victoria's Secret for Christmas
Gifts, the gift that keeps ongiving and my wife's she'll hear that.
Are you kidding me right now?Are you kidding me right now? All
right? So let's start with thenominees, not the winners, but they
were close. Let's start with leaderfor Coach of the Year in the National
(44:07):
Football League, Kevin's Defense. Absolutely, and then we go to how about
big red Nebraska football Matt Rule. They flipped Dylan Rayola from Georgia that's had
four separate stops in high school. So we'll see if he sticks around at
choices for college. Correct, howabout this one? I said he'd come
(44:29):
back up. A nominee is MarioChristible, according to the experts, a
top three haul in signing day yesterday, which is a huge deal. Remember
a lot of those players that playedat Oregon were Mario Christible's guys, so
he had to get it fixed withthe talent, had to improve in Miami,
(44:50):
and he, at least on signingday happened to do so. And
right behind them was Oregon. Didyou notice that they were right next to
each other? Anyway? Go ahead, Uh pos. A nominee is Iowa
football because it would be interesting tosee Scott Frost back in the Big Ten
with Nebraska as an opponent because hehad a lot of success offensively as a
coordinator and as a head coach.Obviously UCF. This one almost won Western
(45:16):
and that's not biased. Western KentuckyUniversity WKU football quarterback Caton Velt Camp,
the BG kids, South Warn HighSchool. The dad's a coach. What
is used to put it perfectly,a great college sports story, kids,
young and older. Winners this week, Paul, because Santa Claus is coming
to town and the last nominee runnerup, as my son reminded me,
(45:43):
stephen A. Smith. He's sayingthank you for the Christmas gift, Dallas
Cowboys. He put on a showthis week. I've went from not liking
it to laughing my hind end off. I mean, stephen A. Smith,
you almost won the Win the Dayaward. But Paul, the win
is a little bit more serious. The winner are high school recruits and star
(46:06):
transfers in the portal because you're ableto choose whoever offers me the biggest bag.
Because we still don't have the guardrails, we don't have the cap,
we don't have a plan why,we don't know. But the players that
are going getting signed at the biggestschools and the transfers to the biggest schools,
they're saying, your bag's bigger, you're my choice, and they are
(46:29):
the winners of the day without everplaying a snap of major college football.
He and I talked about this.I can't, for the life of me
figure that out. I mean,but you know I don't. I don't.
High school versus major college football, there's the gap is as wide as
(46:52):
the country. But you're gonna givethis guy a haul to come to that
school. Amen. I agree withthat. That's you're right. They win
well here because I got to getrolling. And as always, you make
the show you did. You doa terrific job. You're the pro.
Merry Christmas to you, my friend. I hope everybody gets to do what
I look so forward to doing isspending time with my family and remembering the
(47:15):
true reason for the season. That'swhy we have this this holiday coming up.
Many people forget that, I know, and sometimes we take that for
granted. Amen, But yeah,he is the reason for the season.
Ah Man, sir, thank youso much for the beverages today. I
will try to reciprocate when we gettogether again next week. So I don't
(47:37):
know what that's surprised Christmas, Chris, Merry Christmas to you. Enjoy your
family, be safe out on theroads. Have yourself a great weekend.
I've got oh Man, I've gotthing after thing after thing after thing this
week. I'm looking forward to everysingle one of them. You should too.
If you're just finding this show,The Oh Show on iHeartRadio, make
sure you hit follow, send itto your friends, share it if you'd
like. It is good stuff andCoach and I will be back again next
(48:00):
week with more of his insight asto what's happening. Here will run down
all the games that have happened upto then and the game's coming up,
including the Buckeye game Friday night againstMissouri. Should be a great game in
the Cotton Bowl. Really looking forwardto a coach once again. Thank you
so much for Merry Christmas. MerryChristmas.
