(00:00):
Welcome into the Oh Show on iHeartRadio. My name is Paul James. I
am your host. I am joinedagain today by Coach A. J.
Pratty. Brains of the Operation, don't fakes. Starting it out with fake
news. The brain, Well,we did have the debate last night,
so I guess I should start withfake news since we had debates last night.
(00:21):
I hear it was painful. Idid not watch it. I was
actually at a meeting and then Icame home and watched the last game in
Cleveland for Terry Francona as the managerof the Guardians. So I wanted to
watch all that. And you know, that guy's a legend. I mean,
he'll be in the Hall of Fame. I didn't I didn't know that
(00:41):
he's retired yet. He hasn't toldanybody. It's the worst kept secret in
baseball. He has been on afew shows and podcasts and but but yes,
he will be officially. His lastgame will be on Saturday or Sunday,
and he'll be moving back out toArizona. He's going to enjoy his
retirement. But he's not told anybodythis for real. It's all been just
(01:03):
what he's told people. He justdoesn't like the fanfare. He's not that
guy. So yeah, I don'tknow how you do it. I mean,
my Rids finally, for the firsttime in a decade, we're competitive
up until the last last night,I mean last night when the Guardians beat
them. They pretty much took themout of the playoffs, and I just
(01:23):
can't Well, first of all, there's not enough hours in the day for
me to watch all the football Iwatch and still be following base absolutely absolutely.
I get enough rope from my wifeto watch as much as I do.
But yeah, that Reds teams lightningin a bottle. They're gonna be
fun again next year. I meanthey're fast, they're young, I mean,
they're just they're good times. Soit'll be interesting to see what's next
(01:46):
for I'm great, man, I'mgood. I got I got a drink.
I'm yeah. I told you,I said, I want me to
grab you a drink. I hitthe fridge and I'm just ready for a
relaxing Thursday night and hanging out withyou for a while talk football. Well,
I got a couple with Yeah, this evening is what I'm gonna leave
here. I think my wife's gota barbecue I'm backed up. We're two
(02:07):
shows behind on Jeopardy because we've watchedJeopardy every night it's outside, we are.
And then we'll watch the Dallas CowboyCheerleaders. We've been watching knocking the
DCC. Yeah, and that's hard. She's got me hooked on that show,
right, And then there's a countrymusic show on tonight. Yeah,
got the voice in without my Blake, my man Blake this week enjoying with
(02:30):
Rebo. I watched it this weekwith Rebo, and I didn't dislike it.
I didn't dislike it either, butyou know my Blake crush. But
then I have to say, andwe gotta get into this show. I
feel old today? Is that well, I'm getting older, but I don't
feel old. But our son twoweeks ago turned twenty one, and as
(02:50):
of this morning, our daughter, our youngest, is eighteen. So we
now have two legal technically adults.Right, Yeah, actually, absolut man,
that's great, congratulations, that's good. You know you're you're getting kids
getting that age. I'm getting onesthat are marrying off, and you know
what that means. It means wehave to go get our probably we probably
(03:12):
have to go go get a colonoscopy. That's what that means. Yeah,
we're getting a little older brother, that's what that means. You know,
good stuff. Congratulations, that's goodstuff. Well, let's dig in and
talk a little bit about about somefootball. That was quite a game on
Saturday night. Coach your thoughts initiallybefore we dig into some of the nuts
(03:32):
and bolts. Yeah, the nutsand bolts. We had a great game,
great games. There was no productionat my house. It was a
good day. And college football delivers, man, it does. It delivers
every week. We had a greatslate last week. There's another good one
this week. But looking from athousand feet up, before we get into
(03:53):
the details, a high state NotreDame in a great battle. No turnovers
for in the game, nine combinedpenalties in the game, none of them
none of them being major. Bothdefenses showed up. The defense is limited
explosion plays. A very tough homeloss for Notre Dame. It was three
(04:18):
or four plays away from being theother way, one play away from being
the other way, and a greatroad win for the buck Eyes. And
I know where you're going next iswe've discussed it. But a quick story
time. Remember a j and Paulstorytime with AJM Paul. So every time
I'm story, every time I driveover here, I'm thinking, okay,
(04:40):
what so this is a true story. I've got to be true stories to
make one up. This is true. So we have a young man.
I won't say his name, KentState DEANPS is my boss, and we'll
say his name is Jimmy. Jimmy'sa freshman. Well we already kind of
know at this point Jimmy's going tobe a first year senior. It's going
to be a short stay. Butwe're having drug testing. Coach comes down
(05:03):
to my office. AJ, yougotta make sure Jimmy's at the stadium tomorrow
at before eight am for drug testing. Do you understand? Because if you're
not there, it's a positive. So I called Jimmy to the office.
Jimmy, it's important you're there forthe drug test tomorrow. I call his
roommates. Now. The mistake Imade that I learned that day. I
didn't go pick Jimmy up myself.Right, ye, young dumb football coach
(05:25):
right called Jimmy that morning. Noanswer. So about eight thirty here I
can hear his feet coming down thehallway. It's my boss, who I
love, He said, Coach P'sand he said, can you explain to
me why Jimmy didn't show up forthe drug test this morning? And I'm
like, you got to be kidding. Of course, there's more choice words
(05:46):
than that, and I can't sayon air. So I'm calling Jimmy.
I'm calling Jimmy's buddies, his his, his teammates. I'm calling, Well,
we find Jimmy's shacked up with hisgirlfriend at sum of Partner. Right,
of course, that's not Jimmy. You need to get to my office
immediately. So Jimmy comes in myoffice, sits down, and I look
(06:08):
at him and I said, Jimmy, can you please explain to me why
the hell you were not at yourdrug test this morning? And as serious
as I'm sitting here, he lookedme dead in the eye and said,
Coach, I couldn't. And Isaid, why he goes because I didn't
have time to study for it lastnight, first year senior Jimmy. So
(06:30):
when Coach comes down and he says, what the hell is the reason he
wasn't there? And I said,Coach, you wouldn't believe if I told
you, because what'd he tell you? I said he didn't have time to
study for it, so he didn'twant to go. That's a true story.
Okay, so was he done. This was the spring after his freshman
fall season. He was never seenagain. It was never seen again.
He could run, that's drastic.I'm sure he could. I'm sure he
(06:54):
could coach. I'll tell you onething I do want to chime in before
we get into our topic. Ihad a chance to hear Ryan Day on
his calling show today and he saidthe number one thing that he felt that
they did wrong Saturday was they weren'table to do what they needed to do
in third and short. He saidthat was a huge problem, and he
(07:17):
said that's going to become a biggerproblem if we don't solve it right now.
And I wanted to bring that upto you because they asked him.
They said, it seemed like youplayed a really good football game, and
he goes, we're horrible and thirdand short. We're horrible in short situations.
We've got a major problem and wecan't have that. And I was
like, wow, I mean heis. He laid it out and basically
(07:39):
said, we got to be ableto get those two three yards whenever we
need him whether it's third down orfirst down or second down. So's I
thought I would throw that out toyou to think about that for a second,
because, well, I thought thatwas interesting. I know what we're
getting ready to go to with thenext piece and the questions you had before
the game, and I want youto go there because there gonna have been
(07:59):
a segue, right, absolutely,So, the Buckeyes did take care of
business in South Bend seventeen fourteen, the final, and we're gonna talk more
about the game a little bit ina minute, but I do want to
talk about the motivating factor that camein last week last Friday. Some people
said it was Thursday, but I'mpretty sure it was Friday. Former Notre
Dame head coach Lou Holtz, whoyou have had experience with, said Ohio
(08:22):
State under Ryan Day isn't tough acoach. Day used it to inspire his
team out on the road against avery good Irish team. And I guess
I just want to kind of starta little bit by asking a few questions
in regards to that. Number One, was that a smart move by coach
Holtz? I mean, or wasit? Is he right? Is he
just expressing his opinions. What areyour thoughts on that? Well? In
(08:45):
context, Coach Holts and his wifeBeth rest in peace was invited to carry
in and I his wedding, right, I mean he mentored me. Yeah.
But as I got to know CoachHolts, it's true anybody that knows
Holts, he has a knack tosay things that don't seem so harsh that
absolutely cut like a knife. That'sthat's Coach Holts. But here you got
(09:11):
on a show on ESPN in frontof a huge crowd. You have a
Hall of Fame coach at an eightyeight title at the university day Jesus right,
and he said nothing many have nottalked about. We have talked about
as he is Notre Dame to thecorps. Uh. And he gave a
(09:33):
popular opinion in front of that crowd, but he probably believed it. And
here here's the thing. It's been, It's been said and about really since
two years ago Michigan game. I'vesaid it. The one thing that I
think you have missing. You havethis explosive offense that plays more in space.
Uh. And urban Meyer's teams werephysical juggernauts. And this goes back
(09:56):
to the segue. You have seena lot a third and shorts Nott at
short yardage. We talked about itlast week, their percentage. I think
there were twenty five percent third downand three and shorter going into this game,
right, and I believe there wassome legitimacy. Now, am I
saying they're not tough guys? No, but there's been times they haven't been
(10:18):
physical and tough enough when you haveto be in short yardage situations. Well,
there were ten of seventeen and thirddown, but some of those third
downs and the fourth downs were doubledigits. I mean, especially in that
last drive. That last drive wasamazing, what was it, third eighteen,
third and nineteen and they ended upgetting a first out of it.
So so yeah, so, Buthe has every right to say those words,
(10:41):
and Ryan Day has every right torespond the way he did. Correct.
Well, here's what I loved aboutRyan Day. He was he was
speaking to defend the honor of hiskids, his guys, his men.
He was speaking who recruits. Seeingthat now, I get all that,
(11:05):
but right right after a win likethat, that's what comes out of your
mouth about an eight where's coach Holt? Where's Lou Holts, an eighty six
year old Hall of Fame coach thatsaid some things that wasn't about Coach Holts.
Coach Holts was the target at thatmoment. That was about frustration that
(11:26):
came out because he was sick ofhearing it. And they just won a
game and on a goal line playto be a really good Notre Dame team
on the road. So if Ihad nothing about against it other than I
wish he would not have brought coachHolts into the matter. He should have
waited until his press conference on Mondayor Tuesday. Yeah, I mean,
(11:46):
but it was emotion. That wasraw emotion, and there was something built
up. You gotta laugh, andcoaches don't have time to do anything in
season. Obviously he had enough timeto watch bits of that show to hear
what coach Holts had said. Someonehad brought that to him. But you
know, I want to get ontofootball. But a coach Holts doubled down
a couple of days later, that'shim and he went right back trying to
(12:07):
cut like a knife so we canmove on front it. Well, they're
gonna have to play that kind offootball a few more times this season,
and we're gonna We're gonna address itwhen we come up to those games for
sure, you know. So theBucks use those words, they used the
motivation, they did what they neededto do, and they came out and
played good football. Now, youexpressed last week that the team who controls
(12:30):
the line of scrimmage is going tohave the advantage in the football game.
Talk a little bit, a bitabout where you feel today. That game
was on Saturday. In regards tothe line of scrimmage. I think that's
why the game was so close, because both offensive lines and defensive front showed
up. That's why the game wasso low scoring. Neither team that neither
team took it to the other oneup front. At no point did you
(12:52):
say, well, Notre Dames isgetting whipped up front or High States getting
whipped up front both teams. Theoffensive lines gave up one sack. Notre
Dame had one sack. So togo through that game and there to be
one sack that the old lines allow, that's impressive. Only five negative plays
in the game. So again thattells me there's good play up front.
(13:13):
And then you've got you did youhad an even clean game upfront, is
what I saw. Man I putthe atmosphere in that stadium was just crazy.
Now it would have drove you nuts, but I understand. But but
I just I sat and watched thatentire game. I was working for a
little bit of it. It wasjust it was just crazy to see it
all. Coach, is Kyle McCorda big time quarterback? Did he impress
(13:33):
you? I mean, is he? Is he there or getting there or
what? He's definitely getting there? And look, yes, he managed the
game. He managed an environment hehad never played in before. He's been
on the sideline in games like thatbefore, but he'd been in the fire.
He didn't do anything to lose thegame. You know, sometimes it's
(13:56):
it's fun to watch CJ. Stroudthrow the ball all over the lot and
those players are going to continue tocome this year from a chord in the
Buckeyes. But to go into thatgame and not lose the game because he
didn't turn it over, right,Uh, it seemed like he was cool
with the whole game. But hefinished. He led a fourth quarter drive
(14:16):
to win the game on the roadin an hostile environment. And that's that's
what leadership does. And he helpedhim win that football game. I felt
like the biggest leader on offense Saturdayfor the Buckeyes was Kaide Stover. I
really thought he took control of thatgame, especially in that drive. Some
of the things that he did inthat football game, I'm he is.
(14:39):
He impresses the heck out of me. Coach, Well, you know,
I love tight ends and he votedcaptain. Showing up in games is tight
ends are getting used all over thegame of football, in college and pro
as much as you've ever seen it. Yeah, how about a mecagg Buca.
I mean, has he did hetell everybody Saturday night the biggest audience
in college football since twenty fifteen forregular season game or something. I forget
(15:01):
what it is, but it wasjust an outstanding television audience. I think
a mecagg Bucca told everybody in thecountry. I'm here. Yeah, it's
you know. The the thing NotreDame did some things to limit Harrison that
they did. So what happens withgood football teams. The next guy steps
(15:24):
up and he ain't far from beingthe next the guy and eck Bucca had
a great game. The only thingis to finish up on this game.
Paul. The surprise, the surprisesurprises in this game. To me,
Notre Dame limited os US skill andexplosion place. They did a really good
job there. I was surprised thatNotre Dame didn't open it up sooner for
(15:45):
with Hartmann. I think that couldhave changed out come of the game.
The vertical pass game was not whatwe've seen in pass games. It is
what it is. The fourth andone speed sweep fly sweep call uh by
the Buckeyes was not popular and itshouldn't have been that. That's are you
(16:06):
going to pound them? Uh?And obviously they didn't convert third down no
defense. Here's what happened in ourliving room. My brother in law,
Josh, was sitting next to me. It's third and third and long there
at the end of the game, the next to last play, and I
told him, I said, aHigh State's gonna win the game right here.
He goes, what do you mean, I said, they're lined up
(16:26):
drop eight. Well, it wasn'treally was drop seven. Yea with the
three man rush. I wish alGolden wishes he has that callback. But
then the last play of the game, I looked at my brother in law
and said, games over. Isaid, they didn't get on the last
one that one's going in because Isaid they're screwed up in their alignment.
Well, I wasn't count numbers.I didn't, and then I thought,
(16:49):
well, no, no one.And now obviously they run the ball where
the defensive end who's not in thegame. Wasn't it still barely Yeah got
in? Yeah an inch and ahalf. Yeah, but here it is
High State, buck Eyes. Bottomline, they're four and zero to buye
week. They finished and made theplace when it counted to win it.
It's exciting football game. I mean, that was an exciting football game.
(17:10):
I'm it's gonna be fun to seethem continue to play and get better.
I just can't be more impressed withKyle McCord's drive to end that football game.
I just I think he grew upa ton and I think he proved
to everybody in the country that he'sa really, really good quarterback and there's
a reason he's the starter. Ithink that was impressive. So I love
(17:32):
that. I was. I hada great time with it. Good stuff,
man, buck Eyes did finish.Let's talk about some of the other
games that day. As you mentioned, it was a good day. Florida
State, Clemson, thirty one twentyfour. In overtime, coach special teams
make a difference and Clemson doesn't havea kicker. They thought they had a
kicker, but they don't have akicker. Well, it had the makings
(17:53):
of a Disney movie. It did. Jonathan White story, if you'd not
familiar. He's left, He's wentto be a full time employee, and
they're having struggles with the kicker. He gets a call up, he is
eligible. The day of that gamecomes in makes the kick family goes crazy
and stands. Clemson's got a goodstart, but Kate Clubnick was solid in
(18:18):
this game. Clemson's defense was solidin this game, allowing only twenty two
yards rushing, but another impressive dayby Jordan Travis twenty one to thirty seven.
They're happy with that Michigan State transferkeylan Coleman, who had another big
day, two touchdowns, that oneto win it at the end. You're
sitting here now. Now, onething that came up in this game,
(18:40):
the sack six Clemson's driving This isa fourteen. I mean, it looks
like it's going to be another sevenfor Clemson. Club Nick holds the ball
and I went back and watched it. What I believe happened is a running
back did not scan because Clubnick thoughthe was protected. I don't have to
work worry about that guy. Sohe's looking back over here and we get
(19:02):
a late run through knocks the livinghell out of him. Ball comes out,
scoop and score six. Absolutely changethe game, but Clemson still has
a chance to win it. Thestorybook does not end so fun. No,
as as you said, Jonathan White'scomes in Missus, the field goal
goes to overtime FSU. Now,with wins over LSU and at Clemson,
(19:26):
they have, in my opinion, the best resume resume so far the season.
I was just gonna ask you thatquestion. Do you feel like they
are treated one of the top four? Yeah? Who else has two wins
like that? Nobody? Yeah, nobody, LSU maybe soon right, Yeah,
we'll talk about that one. We'llsee where it happens next. With
that Oklahoma twenty Cincinnati six, coachBoomer Sooner just rolled. I mean,
(19:47):
that's a really, really good footballteam in Oklahoma. Well, it looks
like Oklahoma's back back now you seeshows up except in the red zone.
They had those empty red zone turnovera miss field goal in the first half
that really hurt them, kept themfrom getting any kind of momentum. You
see did slow the offense of Oklahomain this game, and then Dylan Gabriel
(20:12):
again shows up two passing touchdowns twentysix to thirty eight. They absolutely need
a better effort, especially next weekwhen they play Texas in the run game.
Another good day for wide receiver AndrewAnthony. And it looks like Brent
Venables as coaching defense again because thatwas absolutely the difference in the game.
(20:33):
They had the one more takeaway andOklahoma seems to be playing well in all
three phases, which they'll need todo so here and at the Red River
shoot out here in a week. And they finished they played their best football
in the fourth quarter of that game. So that was pretty impressive. Oregon
forty two, Colorado six coach totaldomination for the Ducks. I mean,
it wasn't even an enjoyable game foranybody except for the Oregon fans. We
(20:59):
don't play for clip we play forwins. We don't play in Hollywood,
we play on grass. We're gonnalet our pads do the talking. That
was just a snippet. We don'tget to see and hear everything in the
locker room. But Dan Lanning wasspeaking to his football team. Thirty five
nothing at half. Rough rough dayfor Colorado. But listen, we saw
this coming. We saw this coming. The Colorado run game has been nothing.
(21:26):
The Colorado defense has struggled mightily. This has to improve this week Southern
Cow. But look, I thinkPaul Oregon is really good. Yeah,
bo Nix is playing at a veryhigh level. Another big day for Bucky
(21:47):
Irvy out on the perimeter, tenfor eighty nine. This defense shows up
seven sacks, seven tackles for loss, getting after Shandor Sanders. Colorado has
a long way to go with talent. They've came a long way. They've
had a hot start. But thiswas all organ Ducks, and he called
off the dogs. Now this wasforty two six, it's thirty five nothing
(22:08):
at a half. Well, yougotta feel if the season ended today,
the Ducks would be in the four. They are that that good. They're
one of my favorite fours. They'refun to watch. Utah with a huge
one again this week. They beatUCLA fourteen seven. Coach the Utah defense
is impressive, maybe the best inthe country. Well, It's glad they
got him because the game starts,it's kicked off, and I watched the
(22:30):
recorded version and it's fourteen minutes andfifty three seconds left in the first quarter.
It's seven nothing. Utah. Firstplay from scrimmage is the pick six
from the freshman quarterback Dante More forUCLA, who's been really impressive all all
year. Kareen Reid with the linebackerwith the touchdown to set them off,
(22:52):
and there's only more fourteen more importantscored in the whole entire football game.
Ucla defense four sacks, eleven tacklesfor lost. It's fifteen negative plays again
for the Utah offense. Flip it. Seven sacks, eleven tackles for lost
for Utah's very very, very gooddefense. But these teams combine for nine
to thirty four on third down.We can talk about good defense, but
(23:17):
that's also some bad offense right there. Fourteen seven. UCLA's one turnover in
the first seven seconds of the gamewas the difference in this football game.
Is Cam Rising going to be back? I mean, who knows, but
they better hope. So they betterhope so because they've got some huge games
in the pack coming up and theyneed him. They've had and have other
(23:37):
guys banged up, but obviously theywould love to have him. Bad defense
is fun to watch Alabama twenty fourOh Miss ten Bama looked like a totally
different team in the second half.I mean, you you watch that game
in the first half and then wentand got a pizza, you'd have thought
the game was over, but itwas not. No, I'm sitting there
thinking this overreacting. Is this itfor Alabama that first half? You know
(24:00):
it's seven six old miss. Athalf, they couldn't move the ball and
Jalen Milrow on the I mean, this is middle school football on a smash
route that's a hitch on the outsideand a flag route to a pylon and
all you gotta do is look atthe corner and if the cornerbacks up,
you throw it short. While thecorner backed up, and he was still
gonna throw it to what led toa pick, and you're thinking, man,
(24:22):
but second half the Tide win ateighteen to three. Jalen Milrow only
really had one bad play seventeen oftwenty one two twenty five a touchdown.
Made those runs. Alabama looked likeold school Alabama in the second half hammering
it with Jason McClellan, who hadone hundred and five. Bama's defense holds
Old Miss to three of fourteen onthird down. Haven't been able to say
(24:45):
this for a while about to Tide. Only six penalties. The Old Miss
running game was non existent one pointnine yard per carry. Where is Quinn
Sean Judkins? I mean, whereis he? That offense of line struggling
the thing I will say. Iwould not have said this at halftime because
of overreaction. If they can figureout how to run this offense around Jalen
(25:10):
Milrow, do not count out theTide to have a chance to be in
the Final four because that defense isstarting to play at a very high level.
Yep, I get it, Iget it. So the Pac two
got together Washington State in Oregon. It was a delight ended up being a
shootout. The Cougars are good, but so is so is the Beavers.
Man Beavers fash finish to make itfor a great finish. The Beaver d
(25:33):
allows ten second half points, scoretwenty one on offense, and the fourth
dju was a little pedestrian this pastgame. Credit that to Washington State.
Oregon State is still a physical footballteam and can run the ball. Jake
Dickert is doing a tremendous job.And right now, there's other coaches that
(25:59):
agree with me. If there's aHeisman and there's three invited right now,
cam Ward would be in one ofmy three that are invited for a Heisman.
I mean, we got a longway to go, but he is
a hell of a football player. The Coogs are fun to watch. If
you get a chance to tune himin, watch and get ready. The
other team in Washington's pretty good too. We're gonna talk about them in a
few minutes. Penn State blows outIowa. Just a solid win in the
(26:21):
white out. Coach Manny Diaz islegitim not. Defense is legit. They're
playing hard. I mean they've bawledin. There's no doubt. They play
fast, they play hard. He'sletting them have some fun with some pressures.
They rallied to the ball, andthat's what you want to see on
a defense is a lot of yourhats or all of them around the ball.
(26:41):
Tyler Warren two touchdown knight for PennState's offense, drew all or another
solid out in twenty five or thirtyseven. Four touchdowns does not turn it
over. It was a run bycommittee, Knight for two fifteen. They
got balanced. I'm happy for Manny, I'm happy for James, But here
we go. I was got fourteam turnovers. They can't turn it over
(27:03):
once because if they turn it overonce, they're probably gonna lose games over
right on, you got on thirddown. Offensively, they were one of
nine. They passed for a totalof fifty six yards. In twenty twenty
three they ran for a whopping twentyyards. That's a total of seventy six
yards. I feel bad for Iwas defensive and special teams players I do.
(27:30):
I get it. It causes asplit. I've been part of it
one time, and when one sideof the ball is abysmal, it can
cause and will cause a split.Possession time fourteen minutes and thirty three seconds
to Penn States forty five minutes andtwenty seven seven. Yeah, so things
ain't good in Hawkeyeland. That's obnoxiousand totally unacceptable for a team like I
(27:53):
would to be in that situation.LSU beats Arkansas thirty four thirty one.
A late field goal wins it forthe Buyou Bengals. Yeah, week ago
you said LSU might be the bestteam in the country. They stood up
Arkansas fought their tails off. Theygot another big one this week too.
Their schedule sucks. Yeah, yeah, no, we talked about it preseason.
(28:17):
Somebody in the SEC scheduling departments hasit out for a man. I
mean, whoo. But late firsthalf LSU touchdown to to pull it to
thirteen to ten behind Arkansas. Yeah, they're to end the half. kJ
Jefferson played like a warrior twenty oneto thirty one, two eighty nine three
(28:40):
passing touchdowns, forty eight rush. The problem is he gave it to him
twice with intersections. LSU Jaden Danielsshows up again twenty of twenty nine three
twenty through the pick. But howabout again, Malik Neighbors eight for one
thirty out on the perimeter catching ballsfor LSU. Brian Thomas Junior. He
had one hundred and thirty three onfive catches. That was a good win.
(29:04):
Even though it's at home. LSUbeat a team Arkansas that came to
try to steal one. Yeah,I get it. I still think Texas
is one of the best teams inthe country. I have a number two
in my world. They blow outBaylor thirty eight to six. Is dominant
football team. You know, listeningto Quinn Yours, he's been saved.
(29:25):
His strength comes in his faith, how he carries himself, the weight he's
lost, the new haircut, howhe speaks, how he went in and
led the game at Alabama. ButTexas up on the road twenty eight six
and a half, they don't giveup a touchdown and they shut out Baylor
in the second half. Yours waseighteen of twenty three with no turnovers.
(29:49):
Here's the thing about Texas, andwe know Baylor's struggling. They've struggled for
a season plus now. They reallystruggle running the foot ball. That having,
you know, problems at quarterback. When you have Quinniers at quarterback.
You got Jonathan Brooks at running back, plays bejan who's having a great start
(30:11):
to the year. You've got XavierWorthy, a star at receiver, along
with a sidekick in Gittatian Sanders. They're talented, they're big, they're athletic.
They look like a real deal footballteam. We've seen that. They
look good up front. I'm withyou, Paul right now. It'd be
hard for me to take somebody overTexas and they're so fun to watch too
if you get them inte watching play. They're playing defense and they're taking it
(30:34):
away too. So when they're playinggood in all phases, they're gonna be
a tough out because of how muchtimes they're getting ready to be in the
SEC. So they got to playdefense. It's kind of funny. But
you look at what Oklahoma's doing andplaying defense, and you look in Texas
playing defense, You're like, isthis the Big twelve? Not anymore?
It's not. I mean it is, but it's not. So who else
you want to mention from Saturday?Because there were some delightful Jimmy Harball returns
(30:57):
to Michigan another start. We're gonnaget to that in a second. But
they dominate the last three quarters. No turnovers, three penalties, They play
at clean, they're playing good defense. You know, Rutger's just not enough
talent, but a good win forMichigan. USC is averaging fifty five yards
(31:18):
per game. They get it onthe road forty two to over Arizona twenty
eight, but USC needed the fifteenpoints they scored in a fourth quarter.
Still too many penalties and still thesame questions about defense, we'll find they'll
play an offense this week. Kylthirty two, number eight, Washington fifty
nine. There are forty nine pointsper game average. I love Washington,
(31:45):
one of my favorites. Pennocks spreadits are around. It's a different star
each week. He's got in fourgames almost seventeen hundred yards passing and what
a special talent watch him. RomeA Donsay on the perimeter is a very
(32:05):
very very talented player. So Washingtonis going to continue to score points.
And then you've got Auburn ten atTexas A and M twenty seven. Auburn's
offense is woeful, Yeah, woeful. They do not have an answer and
new Freeze. You can see thefrustration. Tough loss for Texas A and
M. Connor Wegman gets hurt inthe game. He is now out for
the season. They have a verysolid back up with a lot of experience
(32:29):
in Max Johnson to come in andplayed really well. And three games ago
I gave A and M's defense heck, but DJ Durkin has had those guys
playing in the last two weeks forsure. And then Virginia Tech Power five
now one in three goes to CharlesHuff's Marshall thundering Herd now three and Ozho
(32:50):
Marshall Winston at home twenty four seventeen. I don't know what's happened at Virginia
Tech Ye sacks and long third downslead to being who of thirteen offensively on
third down they can't stop to runMarshall's rachine Ali twenty seven for one seventy
four and two touchdowns real quick byU twenty seven at Kansas. Kansas wins
(33:13):
this with thirty eight points. Thissets up for a big one this week.
Memphis, who was undefeated and atight one, gets beat by Missouri.
This is a big year so farfor Eli Drinkwitz Minnesota winning buy a
lot up. Minnesota loses at Northwesternthirty four thirty seven twenty one unanswered points
(33:36):
in the fourth quarter in overtime forNorthwestern. That's a cool win. Kansas
State bounces back with a forty fourthirty one win over UCF. Big second
half or KSE State gotta get thisone in Eastern Kentucky University in hallay Man
over SMO, which is a bigrank CMO team forty one thirty eight twenty
(33:57):
four second half points a takeaway totake them to a last second field goal
to win it. So happy formy friend Coach Wells and those guys.
And lastly, you're Brown's twenty seventhree at home versus the Titans, And
how in the heck do you scoreseventy points in the NFL and the Broncos
get down seventy to twenty to theMiami Dolphins. I know, it's just
(34:22):
unbelievable. One question for you,do you think Michael Pennox is going to
be a star in the NFL?I mean, you obviously can't foresee.
I mean if everything plays in Imean, does he have all the tools
to be a star in the NFL. Oh, he's got the fiscal stool
tools. That's a pretty sophisticated offensethey're running. And I know people that
(34:42):
have coached him and they think theworld of him as a human being,
and he's an intelligent guy. SoI think the future could be very bright
for Michael. Pretty fun to watchon Sundays. Looking forward to that good
stuff. All right, Coach, let's talk about what we got coming up
this week. Another slate of hugegames. If you look at the PAC
twelve in the month of October. It's gonna blow your mind and how good
(35:04):
those games are because those guys getto just pretty much beat up each other
and they're the best teams in thecountry. I mean, right now,
you have to you have to saythat it might be the best conference in
football this year. First one isdeepest is Utah going to Oregon State,
and that's a Friday night game,so everybody in the country can watch that.
If you're not going to high school, I'm gonna fly out of here
and watching delay after the Friday nightpostgame show FS one nine PM, number
(35:27):
ten, utall at number nineteen OregonState. The Beavers are favored by three.
Not expecting many points in Vegas fortyfour and a half. Ut is
number six, and scoring defense Utahis number six and scoring defense Utah is
number ninety six and scoring offense,Wow, the Beaver offense number nineteen in
the country. So it's thirty nineand a half points per game. What
(35:51):
about DJU home field advantage matter? It's strength versus strength. I don't know
what the over under is on thisgame, but I don't care what it
is. I will play the over. USC at Colorado. There's gonna be
a lot of points scored in thein the mountains. So this is the
big noon Fox game ye again, which is nine o'clock in Colorado. It's
(36:13):
nine or ten. I was tryingto think, is that mountain time or
is it? Oh? Yeah, you know what, it might be ten.
Yeah, it's universal. You eatpregame meal exactly four hours before kickoff.
Yeah, so they're going to bedoing pregame meal for their football game
at six am, which means they'llhave to be up at about five o'clock
in the morning. Seventy three anda half point is three and a half.
(36:37):
I'd still take the over. TheTrojans are twenty one and a half
point favorites. I mean, canusc show up and play defense and can
Colorado run the ball and play somedefense? And I'm with you, I
don't it'd be hard enough to takethe over. Yeah, I get it.
Florida at Kentucky, coach, thiscould be a gem. We're gonna
(36:58):
learn a lot because Florida who BillyNapier is on the hot seat. If
Billy Napier gets that big win athome, They're sitting there now ranked twenty
second at three and one. UKis four and ozer one point favorite.
Does Devin Leary show up and stopturning the football over? Is the Kentucky
oh line sturdy enough to play againsta physical Florida front? But here's the
(37:22):
four wins, no, no disrespect, but the Cats four wins are Ball
State Eastern f fcs EKU who playedthem very tough by the way, Akron
and Vanderbilt, and Vandy hasn't lookedgood and Akron has has mighty struggles.
But who knows, let's find outit's offense. Graham Mertz on the road
(37:45):
for Billy Napier. Are they goodenough to beat Kentucky at home? You
planning on watching that game if you'reWildcats? Well, sure, noon ESPN
it'll be He'll be all over Georgiaat Auburn could be a blowout because Auburn's
offense is so bad. Yeah, this is fourteen and a half point favorite
for the Dogs on the road atAuburn. Auburn sitting there still as much
(38:05):
as they've struggled offensively three and one, playing at home. Can they find
some offense? Can they find somequarterback play? You got a young Carson
back on the road in a rivalryat a loud stadium. This isn't original.
I heard this on another show Ilistened to, but I thought it
was a valid point. When isthe real Georgia, I mean as Georgia
(38:28):
all to anybody yet, No,this is a chance for them to go
on the road and say we're stillthe champ, We're still the dogs.
So it'll be a fun game towatch. The three thirty CBS on the
flip side upset alert. Maybe inTexas. Kansas plays at Texas, it's
got a little trap to it.Three thirty ABC. You got Kansas number
(38:50):
twenty four four. No, now, they started five and oh last year
and then but Jade Daniels got hurt. We mentioned that last week at number
three, Texas sixteen and a halfpoint favorites at home. Texas has a
game the following week. Yeah, two of the country's top quarterbacks with Jayden
Daniels and Quinn Ewers. Offensively,Kansas has played well. If you haven't
(39:12):
watched Devin Neil play, they're runningback. He'll make you miss. Kansas
averaging thirty eight points a game.Texas is averaging thirty five. The biggest
question to me in this game isKansas defensively they faced Missouri State, who
a former player. Ryan Beard isthe head coach of Missouri State. Love
him. They just won last week. But FCS opponent Illinois who's not played
(39:35):
well offensively, Nevada who's not playedwell offensively, and byu, are they
good enough on the road defensively tobeat Texas? We're gonna find out.
Lane Kiffin wanted this when he tookthe job at all Miss. Last week
he had to play Alabama. Thisweek he's got LSU coming into his place.
Yeah, I mean it's this isa good matchup. I mean,
you got LSU as the road Warriortwo and a half point favorites. They
(40:01):
ranked number thirteen at ole Miss threeand one sixty seven and a half over
under h LSU. Ole Miss needsto avoid two straight losses in the West.
LSU needs to avoid a second lossso they can stay part of the
(40:22):
conversation for the big deal Big questions. Old Miss fine run game balance for
Jackson dart Ole Miss d Is itgood enough to slow Jade Daniels in those
explosive wide receivers? Yeah? Howwould you like to be the offensive coordinator
at Duke? With Notre Dame comingin after what happened last Saturday. You've
got a really good team at Duke, but Notre Dame's coming in really ticked
(40:44):
off. Man. There's a lot, a lot of intrigue in this game.
It's it's a seven thirty ABC firsttime ever game day Duke. Ye
ever been to Durham. Yeah,Duke is four now Notre Dame number eleven,
four and one, number seventeen, undefeated Duke the Irish or six point
favorites on the road. Duke isfourth. You know, we talked about
(41:07):
Riley Leonard in that offense, butthe Mike Elco defense is fourth and score
defense allowing less than nine points agame. Wow, I don't know if
it. This could go either way. This could be a blessing for Notre
Dame to have another tough game onthe road, big college game day,
to get their focus back on what'sahead instead of what's behind. Or you
(41:30):
may see a hangover. Yeah,Hartman Leonard to stellar quarterbacks in this game.
But it'll be interesting to see howmuch crowd noise is there at Duke.
They had a big home game earlyin the year where they upset Clemson.
Beat Clemson. I'm not gonna saybeat Clemson. So, yeah,
this one's gonna be a lot offun on Saturday night, There's no question
(41:52):
about that. Louisville going to MCState a very intriguing game. Yeah,
Friday night, ESPN Louisville four. And oh do you remember who I said
would be a surprise team before theyear started. Ye remember why I said?
Why? Jeff brom Jack Plummer, quarterback who's been in the Broms system.
But the biggest reason was their schedule. Schedule, their schedule, so
(42:13):
really this is their first big testand their favored. So a NC State,
you're at home. Louisville's coming inhere favored. That surprised me a
little bit. Twenty two points pergame. NC States giving up twenty two
points per game and they're at home, so this will be a battle.
Yep, that'll be interesting. WestVirginia going to TCU. Coach, Hey,
(42:36):
I looked at West Virginia's schedule. You know, Neil Brown was on
a kebab that's how hot the seatwas. Yea, you know, Paul,
they're sitting there at three and one. If in TCU, we know
has struggled defensively. Now eight o'clockESPN two, TCUs a twelve and a
half point favorite at home, butWest Virginia's defense only allowing eighteen points per
(42:59):
game being on the road at TCU. Chandler Morris has had a good year
so far for TCU, averaging twohundred and eighty per game. He's got
nine touchdowns, who is three interceptions? But this game, if they can
win this game West Virginia, thenext few games the way Oklahoma State,
I can't remember who else has beenplaying, they could get themselves into position
(43:22):
where they get to Bowl eligibility wellbefore the end of the season. Wow,
that's interesting. Any other games thatare of interest to you over the
weekend? Yeah, this is ahalf to win game for either side.
You got a Texas A and Mthree and one on the road is six
and a half point favorites. Atnumber twenty two Arkansas, who needs a
win? You got the new ABCgame this one two and two Clemson six
(43:49):
and a half point favorites. Whatis their mood going to be after a
rough, emotional loss last week?Because they're going to a surprising four and
oh Syracuse team in the Dome.Syracuse is seventh in the country and scoring
defense and quarterback Garrett Schrader is playedoutstanding football with his decision making, his
passing game, and his legs.So it would not surprise me next week.
(44:15):
If we're saying we got a teamsitting here at two and three,
ye could happen three thirty Fox.This is my pay attention game, Buckeye
fans. Number two. Michigan's aseventeen point favorite at in Nebraska. Two
and two. Nebraska's looked better thanthe last two weeks. What has Michigan
(44:37):
been so far this year? Slowstarters? Nebraska can defend that front four
can play if they can just hangaround, if they can hang around,
you and I may be texting Saturdayafternoon what's happening here? Because I'm telling
you, if Michigan goes in thereand allows them to stay in the game
in front of that raucous crowd atNebraska, they could be in for adult
(45:00):
fight. Yeah, and real quickon this one. You got South Carolina
sitting there at two and two, going to three and one at Rocky Top
against ut ut is a twelve pointfavorite, and then the Michigan the Drama
Bowl. There's sad stuff on bothsides. This is NBC's primetime Saturday game
two and two Michigan State at threeand one Iowa, and it's a twelve
(45:22):
and a half point favorite for Iowa. The over under in this one.
Now, we just listened to onethat was seventy three and a half.
This one's thirty six and a half. And then last but not least nine
pm Eastern. That'll give me alate reason to be up late and upset
my wife. Number twelve, thethree and one Alabama go to as a
fourteen and a half point favorite, going to a Mississippi State team that has
(45:45):
to find a way to win.Sitting there at two and two, My
question is is how does Alabama lookchoice style calls on offense on the road.
I want to see what Tommy Reesdoes to continue to build some improvement
for this Alabama offense. Here yougo, Good stuff, man, good
stuff, coach. I gotta knowmy favorite part of the program. I
(46:07):
want to know who won the dayon Saturday? Because we had some amazing
performances. We had some games wonin overtime and at the end. But
who won the day last week?Man? Well, the few contenders if
you didn't pay attention, and youand most probably didn't, but South Florida
(46:28):
Byron Brown, quarterback twenty two oftwenty nine, throwing for four thirty five
Wow, adds in eighty two yardsrushing, and he hooks up with his
man, Niam Simmons at wide receiverwho had two hundred and seventy two yards
of receptions. Wow. How aboutthis one? How about the win by
(46:49):
the team in the Big Ten West. A guy that was given a head
coaching job in the midst of asummer over a lot of craziness coach David
Braun and Northwestern and finding a wayon to come back and fight under all
those circumstances. Great job coach Braunand staff and players. Dan Lanning his
(47:10):
Organ football team, his pregame speechthat went viral this week's quotes defending what
he does and could not have answeredquestions any better. Great look for the
Organ Ducks with Dan Lanning leading thatprogram. This is a This is the
first runner up before the winner.Travis Kelsey Travis Kelsey with Taylor Swift sitting
(47:37):
with his family in the Famili's boothwatching the Chiefs play. His jersey sales
have increased by four hundred percent thisweek for the Swifty touch. Did you
see what Cincinnati did. I didn't. Cincinnati made a commemorative kelsey jersey and
(47:59):
had it out on the market Mondaynight. But you can only buy size
medium. Don't get only buy sizedmedia. Here's the thing. How many
guys have made this the four hundredpercent increased. You got all these swift
girls out there and they're only insidemedias. But the win of the day
(48:19):
Michigan States Defense. Michigan States Defensebecause here's why, Paul Michigan States Defense
is getting ready to get well sooned. They're number sixty three and score defense.
They're number seventy five in total defense, they're number ninety two and pass
yards allowed. But it's okay,Sparty fans, because you're a ponent.
(48:45):
This week out of one hundred andthirty three teens, is one hundred and
fifth and score offense one twenty ninthin total offense and a sharp one hundred
twenty fifth and passing yards. TheMichigan State Defense gets to face the formidable
(49:05):
offense of Brian Ferrens, beat thebest one ever. The race to three
twenty five is not looking good. The race to three hundred twenty five is
not looking good. They gotta startaveraging forty a game. It ain't happening.
When you said Iowa was a twelveand a half point favorite, my
first thought was, somebody thinks theycan score a touchdown and get to Seriously,
(49:29):
it's it's it's it's embarrassing. It'shorrible to do. I mean to
I'm serious, I'm not I'm donebeating the dead horse. That's your women.
I love you, brother. That'sfantastic. All right, So the
Buckeyes are off this weekend. Instead, we gotta we gotta tell our Buckeye
fans who to watch this weekend. So I wanted you to dig in a
little bit and tell us what isthe one game this weekend the Buckeye fans
(49:52):
need to pay attention to because it'simportant to the Buckeye season. How that
game goes well. I've got fourlists because there was there's four going into
the year other than the Notre Damegame that I would have circled and said,
they gotta they gotta show up.And that's that's not me being opposite
(50:14):
of what I usually say. Yourespect every single opponent, but you do
know some of the opponents you playhave more talent than others. Maryland is
playing well on defense. Uh,they are obviously explosive on offense, and
with Talia throwing the football and leadingthat offense, they could be a problem.
(50:36):
You're still at Wisconsin, best showingon offense all year last week by
Wisconsin. Obviously you got your rivalon the road. They're Michigan's playing well
on defense, They've had a weekearly schedule. You're going to get a
better gauge on the national landscape ifwith where they're at. But Penn State,
(51:02):
if somebody asked me today and Buckeyefans don't get your underwear shorts in
a not here, I'm just sayingso far, if if somebody would ask
in all phases of the game, because of how they've been playing offensively since
game one, is Penn State.I think this is James's past, probably
his best team to this point. But look, get a gauge. Fans,
(51:27):
get a gauge on the national landscapethis week, Go watch other teams
other than the Buckeyes. Hang outwith your family and friends. Bye week
means what. Here's what bye weekmeans to the Buckeyes. Players are getting
a couple of days off, maybeget to go home and see their family,
especially if they live close. You'reworking with a skeleton staff on practice
because they're out recruiting. Coaches getto go home a little bit earlier.
(51:52):
Coaches sometimes get an extra day withtheir family. If the head coach is
nice, you return to base sixand practice and reps and for your younger
players, maybe help get some ofyour starters healthier that may be bumped up.
And then you've obviously got a coupleof day head start on your opponent,
who, when we talk about itnext year next week will be the
(52:14):
Maryland Turpins. Right. So thegood news is if you're going to a
high school game on Friday night andit happens to be a high school that
one of the Buckeye players went to, there's a good chance you might see
them shot that game because they andthey ask them to do that. Go
out, see your families, gosee your high school, go see your
coach, and you know, encouragesome players and go out and do that.
(52:35):
So could see kid Stover at aballgame in North central Ohio this weekend.
You could you could see Buckeye assistanceor maybe head coach at a game.
Coach day may will probably be goingto watch a sun play there at
the sales he does every Friday night, and I the whole story for you.
Actually I can. I can tellyou off air how how he's been
doing it, because I found outon phone call on Sunday exactly how he's
(52:57):
been doing it. But I'll tellyou all about that, coach. Great
show, as always, enjoy thegames this weekend. I'm gonna say,
go bucks, even though we've gotthe weekend off, but enjoy the games
because that's exactly what I'm gonna do. You think the Browns can beat the
Ravens. They win, they lose, they win, they play the Ravens.
I don't know. I don't know. I don't even know if I'll
(53:19):
get to watch it. I'll definitelyget the first half in. When do
they play one o'clock on Sunday? One o'clock on Sunday. It's birthday?
Boy, My oldest has a birthday, so we're going to dinner for him,
I hope. So, because they'vegot to break this cycle of playing
good, playing bad, playing good, what are they gonna do against the
Ravens? So we'll see, we'llsee. All right, you're the show.
Have a great weekend, man, enjoy it. If you're just finding
(53:43):
this show, it's The Oh Showon iHeartRadio hit Follow, and every week
when we post one, you're goingto get a notification right on your phone
that it's there.
