Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello once again, and it is such a great
pleasure to have with us today, mister Steve Lewis, who
is the executive director of the Indiana Sheriffs Association. And
we're back in that season again, aren't we, Steve.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We're doing another statewide campaign this time.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Last time it was building communities of trust.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
This time we're going to honor our heroes, our correctional workers,
our deputies who are working the shifts, and talk a
little bit about, you know, how we see them as heroes.
And I think the thing that we do annually every
year at our annual conference in the summer is we
take time out of our dinner that night and we
honor the acts of bravery and those who go above

(00:41):
and beyond. It's really an emotional time. So we wanted
to fit this campaign in and continuing to honor those
and ask everybody out there to maybe look at as
being a hero and support the is s.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
A Well, let's go ahead and go into history a
little bit for people who might be somewhat confused their
local law authorities as opposed to the Sheriff's Association. What
is it that your organization does and what is your
organization responsible for.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
My organization, Indiana Sheriff's Association. We are a non for
profit We have been around for eighty five years and
basically our mission statement what we're doing is trying to
contribute to the criminal justice system, training and education, and
the biggest part of our job is being a resource
for a couple groups of people. One of it is

(01:34):
the elected sheriff. There's ninety two here in Indiana. Every
county has one and they have constitutional duties. A great
thing about the officer's sheriff and we were talking a
little bit about history before we jumped on here, yeah,
is you know, the office of sheriff is such a
backbone to every county here and the state constitution. So

(01:56):
they are there to work with the public, provide public safety.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Time.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
We have the jail we have to run, we serve
the courts, we serve tax warrants. So there's a lot
that we do as the Indiana Sheriff's Association with training
and education, and we do a lot of legislative things
to help protect the office's sheriff.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
We are speaking with mister Steve Loose, the executive director
of the Indiana Sheriffs Association. So this is a membership
drive and people want to become involved, where can they go?
And uh and do you guys have a goal for
twenty twenty four?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah, you know, we always have goals and we're always
strategically planning because our membership with a non for profit,
you have to be very diverse and when some are
going backwards. That's one thing I always tell my sheriffs
there's two things we do. We don't go backwards, and
we do nothing. We're not in a business of doing nothing, so.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
We always want to be proactive.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
We want to look at data, look at trends, so
what are what we're trying to do is we're going
to be dropping a large direct mail membership drive, and
we're going to be focusing also with I Heart Radio
with some radio ads, and then we're going to bring
in billboards around the state of Indiana with our campaign.
So on top of that, then our regular members will

(03:10):
get a fall newsletter and we'll have a solicitation in there.
We always do a soft ask, but more or less,
we're trying to hit all angles of our communities and
we want them to go to ww dot Indiana sheriffs
dot org where they can look at our website, donate
become a member. A member is twenty four dollars a year,

(03:31):
two dollars a month, and you can also be a
family member for thirty four dollars a month and add
up to four people in your family.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Excellent. Again, that website is Indiana Sheriffs dot Org. Now
tell us once again, who are the direct beneficiaries of
the ISA work direct beneficiaries?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
We kind of put this in a couple groups. Is
Number one is the ninety two elected sheriffs. We are
there to provide training and education for them for their
office enforcement side into jail operations, and we also do
the court side, so there's a lot of areas we
work on. And then we are also trying to provide
training and education for the deputies and correctional officers. We

(04:13):
are really big in the jail training because when you
look at county litigation, usually seventy percent of litigation comes
from jail operations, and we have people in jail. You
have to take care of people, so I like, I
don't I say it. Basically, when you're warehousing humans, you
know they have needs and that's what we want to

(04:35):
make sure that when they come into jail we can
provide them with what they need through the constitutional duties
of the sheriff, and when they leave, at least they
might have a direction. We can give them the resources
where they can go out to the community rebond with
their families. But you know, that's that's what we're trying
to do our in there. So there's several subgroups here

(04:55):
that we benefit, but at the same time, we're looking
to have support from our unity members.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Are Indiana prisons overcrowded right now?

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah, the prison system is overcrowded.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
The jail has become overcrowded, and a lot of times
that's got to do with the criminal justice system. And
you know, one thing we know we're an amendment is
right to a speedy trial, but sometimes that can slowed down.
And then when you had COVID a few years ago,
we had to introduce some ways to manage the criminal

(05:28):
justice population by releasing some But still it seems that Indiana,
just like a lot of states, we've been building and
expanding in jails the last twenty twenty five years, which
you know, you'd rather put those resources into your community,
but unfortunately you got to have you also have to
put resources into your County jail, and you know they

(05:48):
are a little bit overcrowded, but we work with our
sheriffs in the Department of Cresits. You're trying to manage
that population so we can get them to where they.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Need to be.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
We are speaking with Steve Luz, the executive director the
Indiana Sheriffs Association. Is there a shortage of sheriffs or
are we seeing so many interest industries that turnover? Do
we have any problem with the Sheriff's Association.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, not the Sheriff's Association what I run, but the
ninety two sheriff offices. Okay, we are having the same
issues as city police, state police, recruitment and retainment. It's
just not a job that everybody's waking up every morning
say yeah, I want to be a police officer or
be a correctional officer. So, you know, I think with

(06:33):
we're talking about how our world is a little weird.
The last several years, you know, law enforcement has taken
a big hit. We've taken a lot of negative news.
But at the same time, you know, we are trying
to with the Indiana Sheriff's Association, we are trying to
implement those leadership cultural changes from within, because I believe

(06:55):
that's how we're going to fix the problem. So the
is we take a big step in making sure that
there's a culture, there's a leadership program. So we're trying
to address all those things to make it more positive
and bring people back into it for a nice career.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
So part of it is the I I say is
working on the image of law enforcement.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Absolutely, and that's why we're doing these statewide campaigns to
show the positive things that we can bring to your community.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
And we are speaking with Steve Luz, the executive director
of the Indiana Sheriffs Association. Again, their fall membership drive
is called Heroes among Us and you can become an
ISA member or donate at Indiana Sheriffs dot org. Again
that's Indiana Sheriffs dot org. Tell us about the different
levels that you could sign up for, Yeah, and once

(07:46):
you get as a member once again.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, we have different levels. We have an individual which
we call affiliate. We also have a family member and
you can add up to four family members with that membership.
So the base is twenty four. Family membership is thirty
five dollars, and then we also have our business memberships
fifty one two hundred and fifty dollars five hundred one

(08:10):
thousand dollars. And I will tell you compared to some
of the states that I network with other sheriff associations,
we have a really nice positive support group from our
businesses in Indiana. So you know with that, the businesses
will get a plaque, we get some membership decals, but
no matter what level you're at, you will get your

(08:32):
annual decal. And plus you'll get a quarterly newsletter which
we really have some really good stories.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
In there, and we oh, I bet what we're trying to.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Do is provide them and show them what we're doing
with their donations, whether it's our camp camps that we're
running for kids, our scholarship program, our training and education
for the officers, or even supporting our state wide honor Guard.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
And talk a little bit about how the ISA helps
support law enforcement families when its need.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah, I tell you one of the programs we started
about a year and a half ago is our Safe Fund.
It's a Sheriff and Family emergency fund. So we dedicated
and we put back fifteen thousand dollars, so we have
fifteen one thousand dollars scholarships, and I'm given example, in
the last year and a half, we've given ten scholarships

(09:21):
to families where maybe an officer is injured.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
We just had an officer.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Funeral last Friday where the corporal was the breadwinner of
the family. So immediately the sheriff up there in Newton County,
he applied for the scholarship and we took it to
our budget personnel committee and they okayed it. So you know,
in a time of need, that's what the money is for.
Is for when the family has an emergency. They may

(09:52):
cash flow might be slow, or they don't have any
and we're just trying to get them through that period.
So we're actually given back to our family is to
help them get through these tough times.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Absolutely, and again the membership drive Heroes among Us go
to the Indiana sheriffs dot org website Indiana Sheriffs dot org.
If someone is interested in a career in law, in
law enforcement, what direction would you point them into?

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I would put them point them towards, you know, going
to college, because I think that's important in someone's development
as they're going through is learn but more and more
or less, if you're a person who feels like you
need to give back to your community or you have
a call to be a servant. Law enforcement is a
great way to come back and provide and be that

(10:40):
person of service to your community. So, you know, there's
a lot of things once you become a police officer.
You can be a detective, you can be a traffic cop,
you can go into corrections. You can advance yourself if
you get a degree and go to the federal level.
So there's a lot of opportunity that is there over
the years if you can understand a pathway through the

(11:03):
criminal justice field or being a police officer.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
And if someone would like some information, they can go
to the website I assume Indiana sheriffs dot org. But
also are the doors open with local sheriffs to walk
in and speak with them as well?

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Yeah, absolutely, I would encourage and that's what we do
is encourage people go talk to your elected officials. He
is a person that's representing your community. He's providing you
public safety, and whether it's good or bad news, you
should be able to go in there and knock on
a door, make an appointment, talk to that elected official.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
I love it. You know, there's lots of different career paths.
We're in an election year and I always say, you know,
this is pretty simple. It's like economy first, and then
let's take care of cops, firefighters, and teachers, and you
could get elected president on that.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yeah. I think so.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
And you have to remember, I mean, we just did
a whole week last week with when you talk about
the things that you go through as a police officer
or a fireman, there's a lot of trauma experiences. We
are trying to We just held a first ever coaching
class certification last week at the ISA. Oh wow, to
really go it's kind of like pure support, but we're
coaching each other on our emotions because we use emotional

(12:12):
intelligence and there's so many areas where you can be emotional,
and you just want to keep that balance of life
with emotions. They do this with the military, and they've
been doing it for years.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Oh wow, when they come back is to get them.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
In balance with their emotions, and we have to do
the same thing with law enforcement. So we're taking the
steps to really work with our officers back at the
Sheriff's office to get their emotions and balance so they
can go home.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Shift is done, go home, and be a dad.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yeah, it's hard in every career, but the trauma that
some of these officers see you have to find a
way to decompress. And it's great that you guys help
out with that. Steve Loose has been our guest today,
Executive director of the Indiana Sheriff's Association. It is their
fall membership drive Heroes among us. I'm telling you share

(13:00):
police officers, this is a great way to help. Go
to Indiana Sheriffs dot org. Indiana Sheriffs dot org. You
can become a member at two different levels twenty four
dollars individual correct correct and thirty five dollars is that
for family?

Speaker 3 (13:15):
For family?

Speaker 1 (13:16):
And then you'll accept more than that if you feel
it in your hearts.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
We have a lot of programs you can donate too,
so just go to the website Indiana sheriff dot org.
