Speaker 3 (05:13):
What is he doing?
Speaker 9 (05:13):
What can we say Kevlar is doing to make it
family duties, family responsibilities, He's doing homework or what else
could he be doing?
Speaker 14 (05:22):
He's getting overwhelmed. Let's just say that, right.
Speaker 9 (05:28):
Why So, this episode is something that I've wanted to
do for a while. This is really kind of like
a play at home game with the listeners. We love
playing new music, we love playing old music, but I
feel like today's episode is going to be music that
most people, I shouldn't say most, but a lot of
(05:49):
people will not have heard these versions before. You may
have heard the original version, but a lot of these
songs thirty two tracks total, These are just remixes or
b sides or bootlegs, and I think it's fun because
it adds a different element. It's kind of like you
don't know what to expect, and I guarantee there's definitely
(06:10):
going to be a handful of songs in here that
you didn't even know existed. So it's a fun game
to thirty two tracks. I want you to listen to
each and everyone and then tell us at the end
of the show, how many of these tracks have you
heard before?
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Don't lie honestly.
Speaker 9 (06:26):
Them, but careering to enter your names to win some
awesome stuff from Get on Down as well as our
MF Doom T shirt giveaway. Do me a favor, Listen
to the show in its entirety, and then hit us
up on ig and say, out of the thirty two
give us a number of how many songs you've heard before.
You gotta make them list it. No, no, not the
(06:47):
particular numbers. But you can't sleep at night if you lie,
So do me. Don't have bad karma, you know what
I'm saying. Just just do the right thing. Tell us
the number of tracks you've heard before, and have fun
with the show. This show is really it's gonna be fresh.
It's gonna feel like like an early nineties color radio show, right,
(07:09):
and there's gonna be a plethora of remixes that you
didn't know existed.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
And this show's gonna be awesome. It's a really cool show.
Speaker 14 (07:17):
Dray, I'm gonna set the stage.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
This is funny.
Speaker 19 (07:19):
You know, remember back in the days, guys, you wanted
to record a radio show that had all the dopest songs.
The show came on really late, and you usually fall
asleep within the first hour. Well, the next day you
go scrub that cassette tape both sides to not only
hear the great music, but you discover these unheard gems
that became so hard to find, these remixes and unreleased
(07:41):
joints that you never knew existed. So these versions never
really made it to mainstream that made the shows that
we listened to gold mines because of all of these
exclusive tracks.
Speaker 14 (07:51):
So the original versions.
Speaker 19 (07:52):
Don't get me wrong, they were all incredible, but these
alternative remixes flipped the vibe entirely. So thank us in advance,
because we're basically lacing you with an entire show of
all of these types of songs. So instead of finding
one or two, you have an entire episode filled with them.
Like Jay said, gonna be fun, man, let's do it, no.
Speaker 10 (08:12):
Doubt takes you back to the days of recording stretching
Bob or getting the tapes of stretching Bob. That's the
kind of vibe the show gives college radio. Man, it's
where we all came from. This is a throwback to
college radio. Can't do better than that. And a lot
of these songs like I was sitting here scratching my head,
we were the ones who played these records back in
the day. I didn't know two thirds of these. That's
(08:33):
how much digging is done tonight. Get ready to dig
with us and enjoy without further ado, enough yapping, let's
get through the wapping.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Did you know our show can be heard on many
different platforms, not just Spotify. We stream on Apple Podcasts,
which we happen to think.

Speaker 51 (55:07):
What I gotta do just to make a.
Speaker 14 (55:13):
Sometimes I gotta do just to make a Sometimes.
Speaker 9 (55:25):
In coming out of Mix one, that was it's a shame,
(55:47):
I cooled you wrapped boy, as you know the acronym
k g R.
Speaker 49 (55:54):
That was.
Speaker 9 (55:55):
That was the Doctor Butcher remix. Not to be confused
with joke the Butcher.
Speaker 14 (55:59):
And I always thought I always thought it was Jodah Butcher.
Speaker 19 (56:01):
I don't know why I did, but I just connected
the dots and figured Jodah Butcher Nicolo is Doctor Butcher.
Speaker 14 (56:08):
But I was certainly not right on that one.
Speaker 3 (56:12):
Doctor Butcher did this remix.
Speaker 9 (56:15):
And this is a remix where I would imagine if
you listen to Mix one, this is probably one of
the songs you are familiar with.
Speaker 3 (56:22):
This was on the I want to say it was
on the.
Speaker 9 (56:26):
Vinyl B side. Yeah, the twelve inch of the twelve
and some of these songs all mixed one. You definitely
have heard they were B sides or like Mansion in
a Yacht that was the B side. Phenomenal B side too.
I'm curious in a featured set Out X and Mike
G of the Jungle Brothers. That's that was a fantastic track.
(56:47):
And believe or not, it was produced by the Groove Merchants.
I believe so Merchants Groove Merchants for those adults, well
that's affiliation.
Speaker 3 (56:57):
But really the Groove Merchants.
Speaker 9 (57:00):
Are Godfather don and Oh my god, I'm getting so
old it slipped.
Speaker 3 (57:07):
Uh, this dude is down with the beat nuts. It
is VIC V I C d C.
Speaker 9 (57:13):
That is That is correct, So G I C and
Godfather Domic the Groove Merchants they are known for, well
they've done a lot, but they also did a NAS
remix or one one Love featuring. They've done a lot
of stuff.
Speaker 14 (57:29):
I love that.
Speaker 19 (57:29):
Your brain is just starting to lose now. You guys
made fun of me for the last eight years.
Speaker 14 (57:35):
Dude, I lose shit constantly in mid conversation.
Speaker 10 (57:38):
I told you it was coming, brother, I told you.
Speaker 19 (57:41):
I can give you a blueprint of the next ten
years of your life if you'd like.
Speaker 10 (57:45):
You Guys slam me all the time, and I admit
I can't remember shit, but I'm telling you it's coming,
my man.
Speaker 3 (57:50):
You know what it is.
Speaker 9 (57:51):
It is one of those things where you lose track
and you got a like regain and it sucks because
you know you're slipping, you know you're getting old, but
was still there.
Speaker 3 (58:03):
I just got to figure out how to get to
it a little quick.
Speaker 10 (58:05):
You got to dig through it, dig through it. I
have a confession.
Speaker 9 (58:08):
The first track to start the set was min Your
Business by Grand Poova, which I don't know if a
lot of people have heard, or if you did, you
probably didn't hear it until much later on when I
think they're, you know, putting out some of those bootleg
brand Nubian releases.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
On final that was it actually.
Speaker 9 (58:32):
Sampled Sarah Smiles Arizona, which I would imagine why maybe
it was never officially released.
Speaker 19 (58:38):
Yeah, and they probably grabbed it off a cassette because
it was a fucking shit quality.
Speaker 3 (58:42):
Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure.
Speaker 14 (58:44):
But what wasn't a shit quality was pull your card.
Speaker 19 (58:47):
Lord Finess was the king of this shit back good
so good dude, and he had the best horns in
the business outside of Pete Rock.
Speaker 10 (58:55):
Lord Finess ninety one to about ninety six. Nobody's touching
Lord Finess.
Speaker 9 (59:00):
I was gonna say that Lord Finesse Era that like
that little zone that you just said. And I don't know,
would you say ninety one or maybe ninety ninety?
Speaker 10 (59:10):
So when did the first album come out, The Funky
Technician ninety one or two?
Speaker 14 (59:16):
That was in the eighties.
Speaker 10 (59:17):
It was ninety one. I think it was ninety one.
Speaker 14 (59:19):
I thought it was eighty nine.
Speaker 10 (59:20):
I could be wrong because I remember the one with
Matt Brothers No's name, No, No, that was.
Speaker 9 (59:25):
That was a wild pitch that that was. That was
definitely nineteen ninety yeah, but I don't.
Speaker 19 (59:30):
Know, like was it wasn't really then It was the
second and third album that that era was just fucking gold,
like the Return.
Speaker 3 (59:37):
Of the Funky Man, which was two years.
Speaker 9 (59:40):
Later by recall, and that was ninety two ninety two, Yeah,
I think ninety two, ninety three, ninety four, ninety five,
like killing that.
Speaker 3 (59:47):
He was just killing it.
Speaker 19 (59:48):
He was so smooth, awakening all the they were just great,
great albums, but the remixes were crazy.
Speaker 33 (59:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (59:56):
Lord, finess never disappoints, especially if you're pulling a record
from that time.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
That is phenomenal raps right there.
Speaker 10 (01:00:04):
You know, it was wild. The second album, which which
is a lot you know, left tunk Yeah. So it
was on Giant Records, which is fucking weird.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
Brian syndicate, Right, wasn't that was it?
Speaker 10 (01:00:20):
It was weird. It was on Giant Red Giant record
it's not a rap record company, and it was just
completely bizarre and did not get the proper push. The
only way I found it is he was on like
rap City one day and and that was the only
love that he got and and they played the map
brothers know his name? That him again, that one and
(01:00:43):
they played that video and I lost my mind. And
then if you picked up the album, every song sounded
like that, but nobody would know it because it was
on Giant Records with no promotion, no promotion, They had
no other rappers on that label. Was that in afiliation
with Sire Records and that you.
Speaker 5 (01:01:02):
Know you get?
Speaker 9 (01:01:03):
Yeah, I'm not quite sure how that whole thing went down,
because I do know that Finess You know this too, Dre,
I mean Finesse. Dj Aladdin was a West Coast DJ, right, Yeah, yeah, Okay.
Dj Aladdin's known for low profile.
Speaker 14 (01:01:18):
They were on Priority.
Speaker 9 (01:01:20):
Okay, wasn't there some affiliation with Iced Tea?
Speaker 19 (01:01:24):
Well, you're talking about Rhyme Syndicate well, he was on Sire.
Icedy was on Sire Warner Chapel.
Speaker 10 (01:01:30):
Okay, My point is it was weird and it probably
didn't get the attention to deserve because that was a solid, solid.
Speaker 19 (01:01:37):
Out the great record, absolutely and you know solid. It's
funny we're going through these mixes. I want you guys
to be honest. I don't know how many people heard
the rappers are in Danger Kenny Parker remix. But Kenny
Parker did shit like no one at that time. I
mean always that heavy reggae influence, heavy bass. I just
(01:01:57):
love the music. I love the production behind this remix.
Speaker 9 (01:02:02):
While you're talking about that, I'm at Wikipedia and I'm
actually giving myself a pattern of back because now I'm
going to give you the definitive answer.
Speaker 14 (01:02:11):
To this question to the giant.
Speaker 9 (01:02:13):
Yes, so former iced He producers DJ Aladdin and SLJ right,
they are responsible indirectly for helping Vanessa, who was signed
Warner Brothers, which was a sub because iced Tea, says Icy,
who enjoyed a very positive relationship with label, even though
(01:02:35):
to the controversy a cop killer the notorious.
Speaker 3 (01:02:38):
So by metal band body Count So so he was close.
Speaker 14 (01:02:42):
He was close with Seymour that.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
An absolute connection to Iced Tea and Aladdin.
Speaker 14 (01:02:49):
So did he sign them, I don't know signed so
here on on.
Speaker 9 (01:02:54):
Wicked says Giant Record was obviously part of Warner Brothers,
but it was a a Swedish branch of Warner Brothers.
Speaker 19 (01:03:03):
They used to do a lot of the club remixes
and like danceable hip hop like Mars things that, not
that Mars was on for the Broadway, but like those
kinds of tracks, like things that were like European club
hits but had like the beat from like a hip
hop song you liked, you know what I mean. They
had some crazy old dancy type hip hop at that time,
(01:03:27):
So yeah, I can understand Swedish label.
Speaker 14 (01:03:29):
It was definitely from a European perspective.
Speaker 9 (01:03:31):
Well was the guy behind it who's like you know,
he's you know, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, he was like
all that shit.
Speaker 10 (01:03:41):
Back then, we bought records based on what label was
on and if you didn't if you didn't see him
on Rap City or whatever, you probably wouldn't buy that
CD because you're like, I don't know what the fuck
Giant Records is unless you had funky technician. The first
album you wouldn't know shit. So I bought this only
because I saw them on Rap City, because I did
(01:04:03):
not know the label. And back then, if you saw
something on Ruthless, you'd buy it. If you saw something
on Luke Skywalker Records, you'd buy it. You saw something
on John you'd buy it. But Giant Records, You're like,
what the fuck is this? So it's a good thing
that we saw the video on Rap City. Prompts to
Rap City because they were the underground video show. You know,
(01:04:26):
we all love you know, on TV raps that's great,
but they just played the hits. Rap City would play
the underground shit back then, in the early nineties let's
call it eighty eight to ninety three rap cities. Were
you tuned in to see the underground videos?
Speaker 9 (01:04:41):
No, I didn't have BET until much later on. I
guess whatever reason my cable, I just didn't have it.
You were in Philly at the time, or yeah, I'm
trying to remember. In Philly, I would watch Pump It
Up and You on TV rap. Yeah, those were the
two rap video shows that I would get and Pumping
Up was pretty good.
Speaker 19 (01:05:01):
I remember, like, you know, they were in the clubs
and stuff. Like that they like actually took you in
to where like you know, they were forming and stuff
like that.
Speaker 9 (01:05:09):
De Brown was a little bit more articulate. De Barnes
was a little bit what I see Brown Brown was
the Boston, the plumping.
Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
Up, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:05:20):
Deep barn is a little bit more articulate. And I
guess interesting that about by Freddy was right, I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 14 (01:05:27):
I've always loved Freddy. I mean he was always watch.
Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
Because he thought he was cringe.
Speaker 10 (01:05:32):
He was cringe though, why would you call him cringe?
Speaker 14 (01:05:34):
That's crazy.
Speaker 9 (01:05:35):
He was cringe man like trying too hard, like the
old uncle. He was just like an og who got
a path. But he didn't really offer too much.
Speaker 14 (01:05:43):
No, he was, but he was cool and he's been
around front. He's been around at all.
Speaker 19 (01:05:48):
And to be honest, I didn't love the doctor dre
Era with that love. That's when it became commercialized, the
whole different ballgame.
Speaker 10 (01:05:56):
Chris Thomas was cornball though. Chris Thomas on Rap City
was corny, but the videos were underground. Yeah, fat, But you.
Speaker 19 (01:06:04):
Know the funny thing is the early MT Wrap stuff.
I mean, fab five Freddy on the back of a truck.
That's you know there for like the it's there for
like you know, farm animals and they're on the back
riding through.
Speaker 14 (01:06:16):
It's like, Okay, this is just so funny.
Speaker 5 (01:06:18):
Man.
Speaker 9 (01:06:18):
That was Jonathan Demi or Ted Demi. But that was
that was what you're referring to, Dreid. That was the
influence of Ted Demi. That's where you got whose demand,
you know. And so I think it became a little commercial.
I don't know if it jumped the shark officially by then,
but it definitely had a different element.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
To what we were used to for like a rap
video show, you know.
Speaker 19 (01:06:43):
Yeah, And one thing is for sure, you would never
hear any of these obscure remixes or b sides on shows.
Speaker 9 (01:06:50):
So let's talk about this Eric Sermon joint. This is
this was a white label, right, this was put out.
Eric Sermon was on def Jam, right Yeah, Trigger the
Gambler was on Depth Jam. Ironically, I believe his album
just got re released after all these years. It also
features Strange and Helter Skelter. It was called if You
(01:07:13):
Know or if You whatever the White label had.
Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
This is an awesome record that no one.
Speaker 9 (01:07:21):
I shouldn't say no one because I hate being presumptuous,
but many people probably did not know existed, let alone
that at Eric Serming once collaborated with Sean Brice or
you know what I'm saying. So it was a really
cool record to play. I'd love to know if you
guys have heard that before. But I think that's kind
of one of the songs that highlights this mix's you
(01:07:42):
got a few songs you may have heard before, you
got a few originals you heard before.
Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
Then there's like one or.
Speaker 9 (01:07:48):
Two obscure joints you're like, I didn't know this existed,
and that more than one or two.
Speaker 3 (01:07:53):
Yeah, yeah, maybe for sure, for sure.
Speaker 9 (01:07:56):
Another dope record is the East New York during which
is Brainsick.
Speaker 3 (01:08:01):
And Group Home.
Speaker 9 (01:08:02):
A lot of people don't know that Group Home actually
has a decent amount of records outside of the whole
Gang Star Foundation.
Speaker 19 (01:08:09):
Yeah, their first, their first record they did on their own.
They had one twelve inch that had two sides to
it that both songs were really good and the express
I think it was it was like I want to say,
the album cover was like a city, like by the beach,
Like in a close up of his face, maybe he's
(01:08:31):
wearing like a red shirt or something if I remember correctly.
Speaker 9 (01:08:34):
Okay, I don't know, but I know they They definitely
had a handful of singles outside of the whole I
think they were like off Tight Kings or something in
ninety five or something ninety six, But they had a
handful of singles that had nothing to do with premiere
that were pretty dope. And this song the beats phenomenal. Yeah,
(01:08:56):
it's really good.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
It's New York Erey. What else stood out to you?
Speaker 5 (01:08:59):
You got?
Speaker 19 (01:09:00):
Yeah, So aside from the rappers are and Daja, Kenny
Parker thing. Look, it's always great to hear Grand Pooba.
I mean, he is just that voice of the late
eighties early nineties, and I always loved listening to his music.
Speaker 10 (01:09:16):
I'm gonna say from ninety one to ninety three he
was my favorite rapper period, A lot.
Speaker 9 (01:09:21):
Of people favorite, So you're not even counting ninety when
when the All for One album came.
Speaker 10 (01:09:27):
Out, I think I think I discovered him there and
sing His solo songs on All for One were the
best songs on an album to me, and I think
he had to. He was a standout by one hundred miles.
I bought, I bought all Tommy Hill figure of gear
because of him. I rocked a backpack because of him.
I bought your brows because of him. Everything about Grand
(01:09:50):
Pooba was on point. He was my favorite rapper for
about three years. Would you say in ninety two?
Speaker 9 (01:09:56):
Keep in mind, this is when the West Coast was
completely dominating and dre was the biggest thing, But would
you say that Graham Puba was the most charismatic, most
popular New York rapper at that time when Real de
Real came out.
Speaker 3 (01:10:15):
I'm just it's not like.
Speaker 19 (01:10:16):
He's one of them, and I think I think best
the best reason was is he was one of the
first rappers to kind of crossover to R and B tracks.
They wanted him on there always, so that was important.
You know, if you can if you can do a
crossover for an R and B or more of a
radio mainstream song, and you had that rapper feature and
(01:10:37):
he was that guy.
Speaker 9 (01:10:38):
And in ninety two specifically, do you think there was
someone I'm just talking about New York.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
Yeah, someone bigger than Puba at the time.
Speaker 14 (01:10:48):
I mean Heavy D.
Speaker 10 (01:10:49):
Possibly that was what I was going to say, Maybe
Heavy D, but probably Puba had more street cred.
Speaker 9 (01:10:54):
I think Puba had more influence because, like you said,
all of us went out and bought you know, Tommy.
Speaker 14 (01:11:02):
Right, Jabo's Tommy whatever.
Speaker 9 (01:11:04):
Jabo's Tommy. Plus, I think he had like a boost
because you had Mary, you had in Living Color at
that time that were doing a lot of those you know,
you know performances. I don't know, I personally think that
he was before the NASAs and the jay Z's. He
was the guy in New York while this whole West
(01:11:27):
Coast dominance was going on. That kind of like really,
I think.
Speaker 40 (01:11:31):
Stay Afloat, yeah, kept New York relevant during that time.
He was a different cat. He had kind of like
a swing rap. It wasn't Heavy D. Was like super
safe and kind of crossover. And you know, I'm a
huge fan of heavy D.
Speaker 10 (01:11:46):
But Pooba was more swing and kind of street but
safe but super fresh, not soft either. He was right
in the middle fashion trendsetter. Pooba was the man. Dude
was my guy from like I don't know, ninety one
to ninety three. That was my dude, and he was
my number one.
Speaker 9 (01:12:05):
You know what's really crazy is that Poopa went on
to make Real to Real, right, he left the group,
made Real to Reel classic album, great album, and then
Brand Nubian went out and did in God We Trust
another great album.
Speaker 10 (01:12:18):
So album.
Speaker 9 (01:12:19):
They lost their number one and yet they still found
a way to make a fucking classic album.
Speaker 10 (01:12:26):
You know what I think they did. They changed their
style a little bit. They went harder and it worked well.
Speaker 14 (01:12:31):
They were definitely a little more militant that that.
Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
This shit was hard. That was hard.
Speaker 10 (01:12:35):
That first song I allow you ackbar that song is hard.
Speaker 19 (01:12:38):
Had a good remix on that as well. Hey, was
there ever any beef between Pooba leaving. I don't recall.
I don't remember, I don't.
Speaker 10 (01:12:47):
Know, I don't remember saying much.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):
I'm yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 9 (01:12:49):
If there was like beef beef, but I do know
who was it If someone on this show many years
ago was talking about, like basically during the show dates,
Pooba would take more of the money. So I think
the reason was because obviously when he's always involved, but
Poova was the star I mean, and I'm sure Dante
(01:13:11):
is Whoever it was that Electra saw that, you.
Speaker 14 (01:13:16):
Know, the manifestation happened.
Speaker 9 (01:13:18):
Yeah, they could have been happy at the time, but
I don't think they ever had real beef beef at
least that we know about. The last thing I want
to talk about before we get into a mix two
is Wargames by OC.
Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
It's a Large Professor remix.
Speaker 10 (01:13:34):
Listen, fucking Joelle's is such an underrated album that's not
talked about enough. That is an absolute classic. I think
it's I think it's OC's best album.
Speaker 14 (01:13:48):
But more importantly, anything Large Professor touches.
Speaker 10 (01:13:51):
Yeah, that's a great match up. That's a great match.
Speaker 19 (01:13:54):
Everything he does is a great match. I mean, there's
nothing in that Early to mid Night and he's remixed
thing that he did that he touched that just wasn't perfection. Man,
sometimes better than the original version. And we're talking about
heavy hitters and.
Speaker 10 (01:14:08):
That that's not even one of the best songs on
the album in my opinion. But remix is hell yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:14:14):
Yeah, that that album I would say is my favorite
os the album, But I don't know it's the best
oas the album.
Speaker 3 (01:14:21):
This kind of goes back to the whole tribe, you.
Speaker 9 (01:14:24):
Know, which was your preference, super argument, But there are
two coffee albums.
Speaker 3 (01:14:28):
To me, the word life is so good and well,
I just.
Speaker 10 (01:14:32):
Think that word life is much simpler and Joel's has
a lot more depth and just a lot more different flavor.
And and for a time when when hip hop was
was kind of whack ninety seven, right ninety seven, yep,
hip hop was kind of whack. Man, that was the
one album that you could like put your finger on
and be like, that's the one.
Speaker 19 (01:14:51):
But the first time you heard OC's voice from the
first album, there was just something about it. He just
had he just had he had different flow right in
your face, and he was like, you know, it's like
a perfect marriage of you know, someone coming up.
Speaker 9 (01:15:05):
It was just great when you heard him on Pudge Pudge.
I mean, it was kind of like the theme feeling
you have when you heard nahs off live in the
marv Arvitu. You're like, yeah, this dude's a star. Yeah,
oh see, you can pick out his voice pretty easily
when you hear it, you know it? Yeah, absolutely, All right, y'all,
let's get in the mix too. I'm gonna tell you
what's on it. But at the end of it, tally
(01:15:26):
all the songs you've heard before and let us know
how many of these songs you honestly have heard before.

man by your side, just damn what your plans when
I'm in to print it?
Speaker 25 (02:07:11):

I make my own money.
Speaker 55 (02:07:13):
I bought my own chair, I dropped my own bode,

Speaker 25 (02:07:17):
So when I hit it, then I put it.

Speaker 6 (02:07:38):
I'm letting him on them.
Speaker 25 (02:07:39):

on him. I'm letting them.
Speaker 53 (02:07:42):
Pulling on him, and drop it all on them, drop
it all a little them.
Speaker 25 (02:07:45):

Speaker 45 (02:07:49):

Speaker 24 (02:16:34):
That was it.
Speaker 10 (02:16:35):
I love that crew, Helter Skelter original gun Clappers.
Speaker 9 (02:16:40):
Would you say that was kind of like the peak
years of the boot Camp Click? Was that ninety three
ninety four? Well really fasty the click? I guess inform
until what ninety five, but ninety five ninety six because
then ninety seven it wasn't that for the people.
Speaker 10 (02:16:59):
Yeah, I think after that a year run, two year run, but.
Speaker 3 (02:17:02):
It was a hell of a run then.
Speaker 10 (02:17:05):
Yeah. And and we all had our favorite rappers from
the crew too. There were some that were like ah,
and there were some.
Speaker 3 (02:17:11):
That were great.
Speaker 14 (02:17:13):
And that that group took up a very long time
to actually get to full speed.
Speaker 10 (02:17:18):
I agree.
Speaker 9 (02:17:19):
You had a lot of different artists, a lot of
different personalities. Like Strange, I still think could have been
bigger than what he was. Maybe because he was a
part of the OGC that he didn't get to truly shine,
but I thought he was arguably one of the top
three or four in the entire group.
Speaker 10 (02:17:38):
Yes, the Ring won. The was the standout of OGC,
without a doubt. Nobody would argue without nobody would argue
with that.
Speaker 19 (02:17:44):
I just remember in the streets of New York or
clubs or anything that where you'd play kind of the
style of hip hop, they were always kind of on
the outside looking at. They just were never the group
that they really became later in life, I mean heralded.
Speaker 14 (02:18:01):
They were not that group.
Speaker 10 (02:18:02):
These are dudes that would be outside the club and uh,
you know Timberland's and Army Fatigues and they're not getting in.
Speaker 14 (02:18:10):
Yeah, but they should.
Speaker 10 (02:18:10):
They should get in.
Speaker 14 (02:18:11):
That club back then was s OS, but they didn't
know who.
Speaker 10 (02:18:15):
They were, so they didn't let them in. But they
should have been let in.
Speaker 14 (02:18:18):
That's listen.
Speaker 5 (02:18:19):
It was it was.
Speaker 3 (02:18:21):
But they got into D and D right.
Speaker 14 (02:18:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:18:24):
All the betters more than some of the other rappers
used to say what what else was on mix?
Speaker 34 (02:18:31):
Too?
Speaker 3 (02:18:31):
So Mixed two featured.
Speaker 9 (02:18:33):
I would say Mixed two was probably a little bit
more You're a little bit more familiar with some of
the songs.
Speaker 3 (02:18:37):
We started with Cap Bear, which is.
Speaker 14 (02:18:40):
That was a really obscure one.
Speaker 10 (02:18:42):
Back in the day.
Speaker 19 (02:18:44):
We all heard it because of the Bob James sample
of Taxi, and it was it was a hard one
to find, you.
Speaker 14 (02:18:51):
Know, it's always a shitty quality.
Speaker 19 (02:18:53):
You'll never really Yeah, but uh look who didn't want
to sample Bob James back then?
Speaker 3 (02:18:59):
Yeah, man, But they did a great job with it.
Speaker 9 (02:19:01):
It wasn't like, yeah, they just sampled Bob Jane the
song like Wade you said, by her, listen to it.
This is kind of like these were like the years
of Souls, like they were just everything they touched in
the Gold and that was that was another example of
how good they were when they were all cohesive in
that zone.
Speaker 3 (02:19:21):
And you're right that.
Speaker 10 (02:19:24):
The charm of that song is the analog nature of it.
It was super analog. And these guys at that point
it was still the ninety three till voices, the teenage voices.
That's when they were at their best. When they got
a little older and their voices changed, it wasn't the
same souls to me.
Speaker 19 (02:19:41):
The one who did sound the same was Master Ace
because that Saturday Night Live remix by laj So Dope,
so it was so fresh. So that's kind of why
we we sequenced it that way because LJ of course
producer of the Far Side first record.
Speaker 9 (02:19:56):
But this was a great, great reas great Ramsey Lewis
sample and masch to Ace. So this album that massa
Ace dropped out, remember a lot of people liking it,
But I don't feel like mass to Ace really took
off until years later, right when he did Disposable Art
and then started feeling like, who's this guy in the
(02:20:20):
second part of his career who's like consistent and making
not making a name for himself, but like really starting
to stand out because for however many years he was
affiliated with the Juice Crew, he never quite got his duke.
Speaker 10 (02:20:35):
Didn't He kind of do a weird kind of jog
off to the left and do like a West Coast
sound with a born to role and all that. People
didn't know what to think about.
Speaker 19 (02:20:44):
The I n C thing became his first I feel
like the very first, like you know, step into the
next phase and that's you know.
Speaker 14 (02:20:53):
I was at the label at the.
Speaker 19 (02:20:55):
Time and I was trying to remember the A and
r's name, But Clint was the guy behind that record,
and he really pushed it really hard, and they did
really well. I think that's the momentum gain he started
to get from that particular record weight.
Speaker 10 (02:21:09):
The album was weird because you had songs like I
n C Ride and Born and Roll, which sound very
West Coast and very much on the Lowriders kind of vibe,
and then you had songs like eight year Old Sucker,
seven month Afucker, and then Saturday Night Live like we
heard on the show that didn't sound like that at all.
It's very East Coast sounding. So it was a very
(02:21:29):
conflicted record.
Speaker 9 (02:21:30):
To me.
Speaker 10 (02:21:31):
It was kind of weird, but.
Speaker 3 (02:21:32):
It definitely had a West Coast influence. Right.
Speaker 9 (02:21:34):
It came out in ninety three, so it was probably
recorded somewhere in ninety two, and that was when the
chronic was everything. So cars was something that was pretty
important at that time, and Master Race kind of pivoted
to making a record that had that kind of sound. Also,
(02:21:56):
there was like a little bit I don't want to
say horror core because that's like, I don't that was
ding ninety three.
Speaker 3 (02:22:01):
There was, but like it had a little bit of
that little bit.
Speaker 14 (02:22:06):
It was a touch of darble sprinkled dark dark.
Speaker 3 (02:22:09):
Yeah, for sure, you're right sure.
Speaker 19 (02:22:11):
On this mix there was two songs that were major
standouts for me, Mary Jane by the Alcoholics.
Speaker 14 (02:22:18):
The remix was fucking crazy.
Speaker 19 (02:22:22):
And then the second one was the DJ Slip remix
of Fat Joe Derel.
Speaker 10 (02:22:26):
DJ Slip, Yeah, let's go Compton's Most Wanted. That was
the era of comptences Most Wanted. That was the best
to me.
Speaker 19 (02:22:34):
Well, and they used kind of like an East Coast
friendly sample you know that was popular EPMD used it,
so it was just like it just the way it
was done, it was great.
Speaker 10 (02:22:46):
It sounded like music to drive by.
Speaker 12 (02:22:48):
It's okay.
Speaker 9 (02:22:49):
Yeah, and my takeaway, probably my favorite song off mix
too was the Pistol Grip Pump remix. It's like a
UK jazz remix and that's a Volume ten.
Speaker 14 (02:23:04):
I had that Linel was like a big green record
with the Blue ten on top of it.
Speaker 3 (02:23:10):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (02:23:11):
Yeah, this one I pulled off, believe it or not.
I believe it was. I pulled it off of the
CD single. So that was one of my favorite records
of this Also two little notable obscure joints, so we
played set it off on Mix two, which was on
the main source album that did not feature Large Professor
but who it did feature was actually Jada Kiss and
(02:23:35):
Chic looch of the Locks.
Speaker 3 (02:23:36):
This is before they were the Warlocks.
Speaker 9 (02:23:38):
This was like the first time you ever heard Kiss
and Chic on a track and was set it off,
which was very similar to the Roots. It wasn't similar.
It was the exact same sample of the Roots section.
It was section that they had used. And then ironically,
the next track was Jedi Mind Trick, which was I
(02:24:01):
don't know, maybe it came out in ninety three ninety
four when it was recorded, and it actually features Black
thought of the Roots. He was the first dude rapping.
Speaker 19 (02:24:09):
His voice is high, a little fast, but like a
different style a little bit.
Speaker 3 (02:24:14):
And all these voices are different.
Speaker 9 (02:24:15):
So the second dude is Vinnie Paz and it sounds
really nothing like Di Vinie Paz we know today.
Speaker 3 (02:24:20):
That was when he went by Icon and then it
was just a loss.
Speaker 9 (02:24:24):
So it was three dudes and it was kind of
really low Philly sounding, and that was you know, those
are two records that I think a lot of people
may not.
Speaker 3 (02:24:32):
Be familiar with or at least didn't know that existed.
Speaker 10 (02:24:35):
So I would love to hear if anybody knew what
that was like.
Speaker 14 (02:24:39):
Hit us up.
Speaker 10 (02:24:40):
I'd love to hear it.
Speaker 9 (02:24:41):
Yeah, I mean, if you don't cheat and they've listened
to this later on and they're going to the website
and the track listening's there, I mean they're gonna know.
But if you've listened to it for the first time
and you have never heard it before, there are zero
chants that you.
Speaker 3 (02:24:54):
Knew that was Black Dawn on that record.
Speaker 10 (02:24:56):
I didn't know. I thought it was dude from the Youngsters.
Speaker 3 (02:24:59):
Yeah, for real, I thought it was.
Speaker 19 (02:25:02):
And really nice to hear a female rocking with one
of my favorite females. So that lynn Q track was
great and everyone has this like celebration whenever they see
a lynk Quston on the show.
Speaker 3 (02:25:15):
So, hell, Aaron has a stop for link Q.
Speaker 10 (02:25:18):
I love link You was up there with Rob Digga
for me.
Speaker 3 (02:25:21):
Yeah, she had a dope, had a great point for sure.
Speaker 10 (02:25:24):
She's New York rapped, like she changed her name as well,
right female Sean Pete, Well, she was isis isis?
Speaker 3 (02:25:31):
That's right?
Speaker 14 (02:25:32):
She was?
Speaker 10 (02:25:33):
That was aged Well, yeah she was ex clam with
the hat and yeah that was ringing everything and then
you know that ended and then link Q Let It
Fall was a great record, great twelve.
Speaker 9 (02:25:44):
Great and that was the remix feature in MC light,
which you know a lot of people.
Speaker 10 (02:25:50):
Hey good combo, they could they could be a group.
Speaker 3 (02:25:53):
Wow, mc Lights.
Speaker 9 (02:25:54):
I want to say, she's the reason why lynn Q
got that solo record deal and put out Let It Fall.
Speaker 3 (02:26:00):
Props to Light.
Speaker 10 (02:26:01):
Yeah, I was joking earlier that when I bought the
first Light record eighty eight, I thought it was a
teenage boy.
Speaker 14 (02:26:08):
Jesus Man, but not that the not that the bamboo
earrings would have ever gave that away, but there.
Speaker 10 (02:26:14):
I've never seen a hairstyle like that in my life.
Speaker 19 (02:26:16):
The best part of mc Light's original like image was
the bouncer she had. She had this overweight, tall ass girl,
white girl, and it was just funny. She was always
on the train in the videos. That was the best
part of her life. She had a weird hairstyle in
a tracksuit.
Speaker 10 (02:26:33):
You can't tell. I thought she's a seventeen year old boy.
I didn't know so far. Who knows.
Speaker 9 (02:26:38):
One of the songs we played on here was called
Mental Fitness. It was by the Brothers of the Mind. Again,
another super super duper obscure group.
Speaker 3 (02:26:46):
Obscure.
Speaker 9 (02:26:47):
They came out in I Want to say, nineteen ninety
six with this record. Right, they're from New York City,
and this is just a prime example for how there
was such great hit hip hop that existed that we
didn't know about until years later.
Speaker 14 (02:27:04):
And I only knew that song from the instrumental.
Speaker 19 (02:27:07):
A few radio shows would play that and talk over it,
but I never actually heard the full version with the
with the vocals.
Speaker 9 (02:27:14):
Yeah, Brothers of the Mind, I definitely encourage anyone to.
I don't know if you could find it on on
like Spotify, but google Brothers of the Mind and you'll
probably see something like a compilation.
Speaker 19 (02:27:27):
They and they were around from the early nineties as well.
It wasn't yeah, you know, new on the scene, they
were around, No for sure.
Speaker 9 (02:27:34):
I want to say like they may have been around
since ninety one ninety two, so they definitely have a
decent amount of music out there. So so check that out.
And another joint that I say is was really dope
on here would be The Freak the Sorceress. Right, this
(02:27:54):
is Wade you said an album we probably should do
a spotlight on, although I don't know which art we
would get to do it. But The Grave Diggers six
Feet Deep was such a great album. This was not
on that album. This was a B side. I want
to say it came on and Nowhere to Run single.
They actually had a decent amount of B sides, But
(02:28:17):
in any event, another great song. You always can tell that,
you know, when Rizza's voice comes on, it's like, you know,
it's just a very I don't know, it's just a
good vibe, like you feel, what's.
Speaker 3 (02:28:33):
The word I'm looking for, Like warm?
Speaker 10 (02:28:35):
You know it's going to be good.
Speaker 3 (02:28:37):
Yeah, no, it is like good energy, like it's not
I don't know.
Speaker 19 (02:28:42):
I've always said that about fru Quan because I've always
loved them from stet So he just has that such
such a like distinctive voice and you know it right
for sure.
Speaker 3 (02:28:51):
For sure. We had some remixes.
Speaker 9 (02:28:53):
We had the beat Nuts remix of Wild Child, we
had So Good, We had the day Lot remix of
Breaking Dawn. We had the Pete Rock remix of The
Chosen One by OC.
Speaker 10 (02:29:07):
Listen that album.
Speaker 9 (02:29:11):
Again, Maybe that's that's an album we should definitely do
a spotlight on.
Speaker 5 (02:29:15):
Huh.
Speaker 10 (02:29:15):
People don't talk about it. Nobody ever talks about.
Speaker 14 (02:29:18):
Jewel's any nice, so we can get them on.
Speaker 3 (02:29:20):
It's incredible.
Speaker 10 (02:29:23):
Yeah, I think we do that.
Speaker 3 (02:29:24):
We should do that.
Speaker 10 (02:29:25):
We we gotta do jewels. It's worse.
Speaker 14 (02:29:28):
It's funny. We're gonna get all the d i t
C people and never do a d I t C.
Speaker 3 (02:29:33):
We gotta do.
Speaker 14 (02:29:34):
But we're just gonna do all the individuals.
Speaker 10 (02:29:37):
And we've we've been talking about it for like five years.
Speaker 9 (02:29:41):
Well, I would love to do a spotlight on Diamond
D's stunts blunts and uh oh.
Speaker 14 (02:29:46):
Now you're tickling good.
Speaker 3 (02:29:48):
I mean that was That's that's one of the best.
Speaker 10 (02:29:51):
So we're never gonna do eighty eight. We're never gonna do.
Speaker 14 (02:29:54):
We're gonna we'll do this year for sure.
Speaker 3 (02:29:56):
I think we did.
Speaker 9 (02:29:57):
We already discussed the eighty eight. We're gonna do what
it's probably going to be like a winner thing. Yeah,
it's already arranged. It's already arranged.
Speaker 14 (02:30:04):
I send this in the works.
Speaker 19 (02:30:05):
Got also remember where you know we're we're hitting that
stride post summer, so you know we.
Speaker 14 (02:30:10):
Gave you those really great shows. Ps.
Speaker 19 (02:30:13):
How was the no Cursing show? I want to know feedback?
You know, are you playing it for the kids when
they're you're in the car, what's the deal? I want
to know that feedback went, were you sweating a couple
of times?
Speaker 9 (02:30:25):
Now, these shows are going to be on our Bebo channel,
So if you for whatever reason didn't hear on iTunes
or whatnot, it is streaming on on YouTube as well.
Speaker 19 (02:30:38):
By the way, the streaming services guys, I'm going to
say this, I was always a Spotify dude, but I
will tell you that Apple Podcasts, uh, the app they
have the best quality sounding So if you'd like to
really bump this show. They don't put any crazy like
compression on the shows, and they're really like like almost
(02:31:00):
the way that you know I put them out.
Speaker 14 (02:31:03):
It's their loud Chris loud louder. They're there.
Speaker 19 (02:31:06):
They don't have like a whole button like you know,
take out the base and shit, So there's no compression.
Speaker 14 (02:31:12):
It's just a better system. So I urge you all
just to switch over to that.
Speaker 10 (02:31:16):
Hey, I'm glad you said that because I'm a guy
that would always listen on Amazon Music or Spotify. Spotify's
sound quality is not that great. Amazon Music is better,
but the show is not on Amazon Music, dude. Apple Podcasts. Yeah,
bet done well.
Speaker 19 (02:31:34):
The guy just paid himself three hundred forty six million dollars,
so maybe we'll fucking increase the output of what's going on.
Speaker 3 (02:31:40):
On this channel.
Speaker 9 (02:31:41):
We use Spotify because it's convenient, and if you have
like Alexa, you may just say like presumed Spotify or Amazon.
But Dre's right as far as sound quality goes those
audio files, the Apple podcast app, I would say, is
the best sound quality of what we do of to
take a personal show. So if you want to listen
(02:32:02):
to the show in like do you remember like how
the Death Row records were remastered or were mastered in
a way where like you put it in the car
and it was like extra level of like volume that
you didn't know existed.
Speaker 14 (02:32:15):
It was Adobe when Adobe didn't exist.
Speaker 24 (02:32:17):
Yea.
Speaker 9 (02:32:17):
That is what Apple podcast does to this show. So
I encourage you if you want to listen to it
at a high quality level Apple Podcasts. But again, if
you can't find an episode or you don't know what
streaming platform, always go to our website, take a Personal
radio dot com, click on the episode page, and it's
(02:32:38):

ways you can listen, whether it's a download, whether it's

have plenty of options to listen to it before we
get out of here. We played including the first song
we played. Its total of thirty one tracks. We have
one more to go, So when we get out of
here after these shoutouts, there's one more track to go.
(02:33:01):
Then add up all those thirty two songs. Let us
know how many of those thirty two you have heard before? Again,
not the original version. We're talking about the versions we
played on this episode. Okay, the remixes, the bootlegs, the
B sides, whatever it is. How many of you heard.

(02:33:22):
some really dope prizes. With that said, I really don't
have any shout outs, but I will say rest in
peace to Frankie Beverly. I knew nothing about until K Solo.
I will admit, really I can hear your mom's my business.
I don't know if I would have known. I mean,
I'm sure I would have years later.
Speaker 19 (02:33:40):
Before I Let Go was always played, you know at
a barbecue or you know, in the back of a nightclub.
Speaker 14 (02:33:45):
It was always the ship.
Speaker 9 (02:33:46):
And you guys got some years on me. So like
you know, K Solo, your mom My business, I was
finally like and he.
Speaker 14 (02:33:54):
Had a little of that religious tinge to the music,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 9 (02:33:57):
Kind Yeah, he has a lot of hits up that
that's the one that it feels like every show we
have to do this, so well, no rapper, So I'm
happy in that regard that we don't have to r
ip a rapper. But you know that comes in threes.
We have Frankie Beverly, we got James Earl Jones.
Speaker 14 (02:34:16):
And you have the met that passed away.
Speaker 3 (02:34:18):
Oh yeah, but it.
Speaker 9 (02:34:19):
Doesn't he's not in the same you know, stratus spheres
James Earl Jones.
Speaker 10 (02:34:25):
Yeah, we didn't talk about James Earl Jones. If you
only knew the power of the docs, that's fucking impactful.
Speaker 19 (02:34:32):
Yeah, listen, you can't you can't sum up James Earl
Jones in one sentence. So you know, guy was an
icon and amazing at what he did. All right, Kang, Peace,

Speaker 73 (02:39:39):
The brothers on the corners with the rest and then
the prisons given the brothers no visions of how we
can gain wealth and gain stuff. Is seeing the dream
of a total different scene. I dressed clean, stan lean

Speaker 6 (02:40:16):

Speaker 73 (02:40:30):
So before my acts, I think, because it's a brink
