But now I learned to earn because I'm righteous. I
feel grave. So maybe y'all might just search forard nine

my favorite this, but without the money, it's still a whish.

Speaker 23 (09:58):
This is an episode that Andre has been dreaming about
since he played his first Man Tronics album. And Wade
has ripped more phone books than Bam Bam Bigelow with
an ape, all of that china white and maybe smashed
a few windshields by now. And I'm talking about our
(10:20):
long awaited and anticipated nineteen eighty eight tribute Fresh for
eighty eight. I believe this is going to be a
two parter. We'll let Jason get into the details. I'm
just here to tee it up and listen up. Man,
if it wasn't for this year, you wouldn't have had
Eric Sermon doing sprite commercials.
Speaker 9 (10:42):
Five years later, he did such an important year.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Did Eric Sermon do sprikee commer?
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I think he did. Strike commercials.
Speaker 23 (10:48):
I'll watch of them to obey your thirst, baby, obey
your thirst and O Bay take a personal nineteen eighty
eight tribute.
Speaker 9 (10:56):
Happy New Year.
Speaker 23 (10:57):
It's all the listeners out there breaking the Larry David
Coden wishing it to you on January eighth.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Let's set it off.
Speaker 24 (11:06):
You said it was an important year, and I'm going
to say that this was the most important year in
all of hip hop. This year is the reason why
we're still talking about hip hop in twenty twenty five.
It's the reason why we have artists like Kendrick Lamar.
It's the reason why we are still gravitating towards genre
that we grew up listening to in the eighties. So
(11:28):
while I can't say the same way that Dre and
Aaron can speak on eighty eight because I was much
younger being a student of hip hop, I studied eighty
eight years later, because I was only ten at the time.
So I can't possibly articulate what it was like the
way these guys will break you down. But I will
(11:48):
say this year to me is like the Jackie Robinson
year of hip hop. Right, Jackie Robinson wasn't the greatest
black player to play baseball, but he was the first.
And without Jackie, there's no Willie, There's no Hank Aaron,
there's no Ken Griffy, there's no Ricky. So this year
made it possible for everything to come after that. It's
(12:09):
undeniably the most important year in all of hip hop.
It may not be your favorite, depending on your age,
but you cannot dispute the fact that this year is
a reason we are still talking and still listening to
hip hop music.
Speaker 25 (12:23):
No doubt, certainly biggest seismic year for hip hop. I
think what we forget to say. It's probably the biggest
with cultural shifts, and it certainly laid the foundation for
the Golden Era and part two of the Golden Era.
So this was the year that brought us straight out
of Compton. This is the year that brought us It
takes a nation of millions by all means necessary, the
(12:44):
great adventures of slick rick groups like NWA, pe BDP.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
They didn't just drop albums.
Speaker 25 (12:51):
They redefine the sound, attitude, the message of the genre.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
So join us as we dive into this game changing moment.
Speaker 25 (12:59):
Iconic day classic records all made in eighty eight, the
year that hip hop became unstoppable.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Wait, I know that your back of me on this one.
Speaker 25 (13:07):
Remember what I always say here was the albums of
eighty eight that allowed the Second Golden Era to perfect
what they did.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Think about it.
Speaker 25 (13:14):
Every one of these groups all sounded different. You can't
say that about other years. Everybody sounded different, You couldn't
bite anyone's style. All originals from this year, all fresh
and all standouts that will never ever be forgotten.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Guys, So buckle up for nineteen eighty eight. Let's set
it straight, they well said, Dre Gloss. A while back.
Speaker 13 (13:38):
I read something that you wrote about eighty six and
eighty seven kind of tea and things up and gaining momentum, and.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Eighty eight was the straight up explosion. That's where it
all happened.
Speaker 13 (13:50):
You know, when I think back on it, your MTV
raps did not actually debut until August. I think it
was like August eighth of nineteen eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
It was that run DMC that they were live at
and you know that's eight.
Speaker 13 (14:04):
Months into the year. So yes, the OMTV Raps brought
it to the masses. But the explosion was happening earlier.
You were still seeing rap videos on Donnie Simpson and
with Sherry Carter. On occasion, you might catch something on
Soul Train. But nevertheless, since Run DMC broke through and
LL broke through in eighty seven, Run DMC in eighty six,
(14:26):
with those huge albums, it opened the floodgates.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
For what was just an insane year.
Speaker 13 (14:32):
And you're gonna hear kind of in these two mixes,
what I would call the hits from eighty eight, the
ones that everybody knows. I know, I was sitting here
singing like eighty percent of all the lyrics to every song,
and there are a lot of you out there that
will do the same. But we're also going to talk
about a ton of the albums that came out that
were a little more obscure, but you're gonna know what
(14:54):
they are and you're gonna remember. And this is nothing
but good vibes's originality. Dre, you said, everybody sounded different.
This could never be repeated. So it feels so good
to step into this timeframe. Myself, I was fourteen years old,
the most impressionable age.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
I was a freshman in high school.
Speaker 13 (15:14):
I remember riding my bike in the fucking snow twarp
to buy the easy etape. Riding my bike in the
snow to buy the easy etape.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
So that's how.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Important this was to me.
Speaker 13 (15:26):
I distinctly remember sitting in my bedroom with a pad
and a pen writing down every lyric to the KRS
one songs from by any mean necessary, so that I
can memorize the songs. So these are the kind of
memories that we're talking about. It can never be replicated,
can never be duplicated, and I am so fired up.
(15:49):

Take it personal, so yo, do that? Take the ship
bild personal? Represent hip hop to the books, to the
book would of course we expect to win.
Speaker 34 (24:14):
Any self respecting intelligent person knows that the so called
band uh sets of Sonic and the rest of this
hip hop music is just a passing fan which one
is not created, two inspired violence, and three encourages thievery
in the form of sampling.
Speaker 15 (24:31):
Sample.
Speaker 6 (24:31):
Here is how it started.
Speaker 16 (24:32):
Hurts you on the radio talking about rap, saying all
that crap about how we sample, they have an exampled
thy will let you get away with that, criticize our method,
how we make you said that was it odd?
Speaker 5 (24:44):
So now we're gonna rip your apart.
Speaker 12 (24:45):
Stop stop check it out the man, this is the
music of a hip hop band jazz.
Speaker 18 (24:51):
We do recall it that, but this jack be teams
and low for mat boy point what you miss does speculating.
Speaker 16 (24:58):
Created the fuck You've made the same politicians talking all
that jazz jazz.
Speaker 35 (25:05):
Hey, hey fab five, Freddy here and this is talking
all that jazz.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
One of the first.
Speaker 35 (25:10):
Videos I directed steps of Sonic, one of the most
incredible rap groups back in that early golden era right
out of Brooklyn, strong flavored, strong excitement when they when
their music.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
Would come on. And I got the opportunity to.
Speaker 22 (25:24):
Do this video talking all that jazz.
Speaker 35 (25:25):
And what's what I think about now looking back at
this video is like the idea of sampling had just
started in hip hop, and the inspiration for the record
was they were attacked by a well known jazz musician
basically saying that you got not making music.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
This is flag you know sampling?
Speaker 2 (25:46):
What are you doing here? So Daddy O, the main
front man.
Speaker 5 (25:50):
Of the groups that Sonic, came up with this incredible record.
Speaker 22 (25:53):
So I was able to combine the hip hop.
Speaker 35 (25:57):
Aesthetic visuals with the bebop jazz aesthetic visuals and to
emphasize what he was saying in the song sampling, which
really just beginning. My mayor Ricky pile Like plays the
assistant to the attorney.
Speaker 15 (26:13):
You seeing the beginning in the video and then getting.
Speaker 35 (26:15):
Kicked out of court by the judge as they obviously
lose the case. For sample of days one, we won
the video wins Hey, one of my favorites talking all
that jazz, sat about fraying doing.
Speaker 10 (26:26):
My thing thing and yo, tell a friend and tell
a friend.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
Baby's times.
Speaker 10 (26:30):

Speaker 16 (01:15:21):

Speaker 2 (01:15:24):

Speaker 6 (01:15:25):

Speaker 6 (01:16:38):

Speaker 3 (01:16:39):
You need a far aid.
Speaker 16 (01:16:41):
I'm walking the path that the law made attend and

Speaker 6 (01:16:46):
So just say when so I can let lyrics flash.
Speaker 5 (01:16:49):

Speaker 2 (01:16:50):

Speaker 16 (01:16:51):
Gun or sucker's a pullet to tiger can figure up.

Speaker 16 (01:16:55):
Big up when it comes to money, your grants, My nigga,

Speaker 6 (01:17:24):
Canaan support Canaan in that category.
Speaker 16 (01:17:27):
In scorn Nab, you said want to keep Bob gone?
Speaker 6 (01:17:31):
Did the end of the record, I still have.
Speaker 16 (01:17:33):
Means that man I had you to Mic, I had
made day came mat days if a maiden man.
Speaker 20 (01:17:39):
Goog gee, ain't they growing up?
Speaker 6 (01:17:41):
I ain't gonna give y'all nothing, my crown mother, because
y'all tell that when y'all getting I said to do
a little seven to the beats.
Speaker 7 (01:17:47):
Go.
Speaker 5 (01:17:55):
All right?
Speaker 24 (01:17:56):
Coming in out of mixed one, that was the Symphony
featuring the Juice Crew, which is probably the first Posse
cut we could really recall that kind of started it all.
Speaker 25 (01:18:06):
And one that was just so good, I mean, other
than scenario, probably the best of all time.
Speaker 24 (01:18:10):
Yeah, I mean you had you had two giants, Kane
and g Baps going at it, and you know, Craig
g and massd Ace and yeah, I mean that was
that's arguably one of the greatest Posse cuts of all time.
So I want to like talk about obviously eighty eight,
but let's kind of pay homage to eighty seven because like,
like Wade said, eighty seven you had paid in fole.
(01:18:33):
You're coming on minded, You're bigger and deffer, and I
think it started. It was like a layup to eighty
eight and eighty. While eighty seven was good, eighty eight
was on another level. It was a year that cannot
be top because it had, like Dre said, so many
classics and different sounds. Originality was such a big thing here.
(01:18:56):
I mean, who heard of like Ultra Magnetic or anything
like Ultra until that album dropped. Nobody, no EPMD had
their own sound slick Rick. No one sounded like slick Rick.
The Great Adventures of is one of the greatest albums
of all times. You know, most albums from eighty eight,
you can make that argument for it.
Speaker 25 (01:19:16):
And the great part about that Jay was the videos
started to surface. EPMD in an ice factory was fucking insane.
I'm sorry, seeing all the chains and shit moving and
then the ice was coming down for the you Gots
to Chill video.
Speaker 57 (01:19:32):
I mean, the imagery was amazing. You know these guys
so many, so many awesome videos. How about Posse on Broadway.
That was a great video.
Speaker 3 (01:19:43):
Maharaji in the back right riding around in that Limo
trying to pick up a dollar bill top billin.
Speaker 13 (01:19:49):
How about paper Thin videos on the subway.
Speaker 25 (01:19:52):
The best part of paper Thin was the Bodyguard for Life,
that big, tall, white, heavy girl, you know, so funny.
Speaker 24 (01:20:02):
And then you had like the fun elepment right, you
had kidd In't Play. You know, we heard super Lover
c Casanop. We had Salt Pepper Yeah something MC liked
it something, So there was diversity.
Speaker 2 (01:20:15):
And then you had the Jungle Brothers, and you had
you had Easy E who was like easy E. I mean,
I know there was Aanngster Wrap, I know, school E D,
but whose style was like easy easy.
Speaker 3 (01:20:28):
And don't forget stets of sonic guys.
Speaker 25 (01:20:30):
I mean the first hip hop band you had, uh
you know, Prince Paul as the DJ, and no one
sounded like Daddy O back then.
Speaker 3 (01:20:40):
I mean it was crazy.
Speaker 6 (01:20:43):
We we could go on and on with this.
Speaker 13 (01:20:44):
You had, you had guys come out of LA that
you would have you wouldn't know where they're from. I
wouldn't have really been able to guess where King T
was from, would you know. I mean that was just
solid ship.
Speaker 3 (01:20:56):
Yeah, you're right, let's be honest.
Speaker 25 (01:20:57):
What about whoever thought Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff would
have a hit like brand New Funk.
Speaker 13 (01:21:04):
Well, their big hit was the Cornball One, and that's
kind of I get it.
Speaker 9 (01:21:08):
Parents, just understand of that eighty nine, that was eighty eight.
Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
That was eighty eight that.
Speaker 13 (01:21:13):
Yeah, he's a DJ on the rapper. That was the
one that got all the video play and stuff. But
that wasn't even the fifth best song.
Speaker 2 (01:21:19):
On that album.
Speaker 3 (01:21:20):
I would have Freddy Krueger song terrible.
Speaker 5 (01:21:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 24 (01:21:23):
Well that's the thing, like se see, Wade and Drake
have a different connection to the music, and rightfully so,
because this is like their coming of age music, you know,
so yes, so they have a connection that keV, You
and I really don't have. I mean, we're too young
to be going buying these kind of records unless our
you know, our mothers bought these for us with our
(01:21:43):
allowance or some shit, because we were too young to
even buy a cassette at that time.
Speaker 23 (01:21:48):
We weren't like really buying music at that age either.
We were ripping baseball cards and buying comic books, you know,
I mean we were fucking ten.
Speaker 24 (01:21:57):
Yeah, I mean I totally remember getting the end if
you aged it out of Compton because everyone in school
was like, you know, they curse on here, you know,
And I was like, oh my god, I want to
have it.
Speaker 2 (01:22:06):
And I didn't really know anything about it the way.
Speaker 24 (01:22:08):
But the point I'm trying to make is like, even
though it's different fro Us now years later, we can
appreciate it. But I certainly think that Trey and Wade
have a different appreciation and they could probably go into
greater detail of what it was like being alive in
eighty eight when all this music happened to just fall
(01:22:29):
in their laps.
Speaker 9 (01:22:30):
It was the way ninety I was buying I was
buying Diehard on VHS.
Speaker 25 (01:22:34):
So like, yeah, because of your age, here's the thing,
here's the thing. So like you guys will watch movies
like that. Do you remember when Colors came out? Just
the fact that you had a real movie with like
the best actors, whether it was Sean Penn, Robert Duvall.
Speaker 3 (01:22:51):
I mean, this was a real Warner Brothers film.
Speaker 25 (01:22:54):
The fact that they put out a soundtrack out first
of its kind in the hip hop world, first of
it's kind to be a full hip hop album. I mean,
iced tea with Colors, Salt and Peppa was on there,
Peyton Fule was on there. Seven A three with Mad
Mad World was crazy. Mine is a Terrible Thing to waste.
(01:23:15):
Mc shan was on there, Big Daddy with raw Rock
Sanne Chante, which we play in the mix.
Speaker 3 (01:23:20):
Go on girl.
Speaker 25 (01:23:21):
I mean what studio would say, Hey, we're gonna play
all these rappers that you know, the world's afraid of.
Speaker 6 (01:23:29):
It was bold.
Speaker 3 (01:23:29):
It was bold. It was a bold move and it
was like eighty eight guys, that did not happen.
Speaker 25 (01:23:35):
So another thing that started in eighty eight for the
first time a hip hop soundtrack start to finish crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:23:43):
Yeah, that's a good point. You know what's interesting. You
talk about Salt Pepper and they had Shake Your.
Speaker 13 (01:23:48):
Thing, and that was a pretty big video, had Heu
doing the hook and stuff. But when you listen to
that album, and that was their second album. Okay, so
their sophomore effort not a very good album in comparison
to all of the Jewels that came out this year.
Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
Yeah, it actually was.
Speaker 13 (01:24:04):
Like a sophomore slump album if you go back and
listen to it. Now, look, we all know some of
this stuff age well, and a lot of it did not.
This album was not very good. Salt and Pepper's first
album was So b Girl and it was so New
York and it was so raw and fucking good. This
(01:24:26):
album was like trying too hard to be pop and
it was like kind of a sophomore slump.
Speaker 3 (01:24:31):
Well, they were ready for their crossover, which is really weird.
Speaker 13 (01:24:34):
Because they were, you know, one of the main stays
and one of the main headliners of the time.
Speaker 3 (01:24:42):
But that album was not very good, which is wild.
Speaker 13 (01:24:45):
Here you have the most important year in rapping, the
best year, you know, top three to you know, no
matter who you are, and they had an album that
was probably like number fifty out of one hundred great
albums that year. So it's really wild to think about that.
And then you got other guys that just knocked it
(01:25:05):
out of the fucking park, like pe like like Slick Rick,
like n w A, you know, n w A and
Easy E their albums both came out that year. Dre
was getting busy. Eighty eight was up bit in the
year for Dre, busy busy year for Dred. Not only that,
the filip Rush Crew came out in eighty eight, so
Dre was all all up involved in that too, So
(01:25:26):
that's where we first heard from the DC. By the way,
So for those of y'all that don't know, the Felop
Rush Crew tape came out in eighty eight, and the
DC was the main guy on there, and he stood
out like nobody's business, and Dre went and snatched him up.
So it was it very much sounded like a demo tape,
but I think it was on something like Micolo Records
(01:25:47):
or something weird like that. But just because I bought it,
just because I heard that Dre was involved, and so
that's why I bought it. I'm glad I did because
it had some jewels on there, but it's got some
corny shit on there too. There there were so many
albums that people wouldn't initially think of, but they dropped
that year and they were fucking good a lot of them.
Speaker 24 (01:26:09):
It's up there with I would say, the most classics
in a year in hip hop, right, So if the
Golden Eras maybe started in eighty seven or officially eighty eight,
you know, and let's say it ended around ninety five
ninety six, eighty eight has to be the year, along
with maybe ninety four, with the most classic releases. But
(01:26:30):
like you just said earlier, because it came out in
eighty eight. A lot of that stuff just simply didn't
age that well. It doesn't mean it wasn't good at
the time. It doesn't mean it's not good now, but
it just means it just didn't age well. I mean,
there's a lot of means that you and I listened
to from the nineties that didn't age well. Some of
the indie records we loved when we're doing radio didn't
age well. But it still doesn't mean it wasn't a banger,
(01:26:53):
you know, like great at the time. Again, what you
guys might felt was a little too like on the
no was like it takes two when it dropped, you
probably didn't love it where it's like someone like me,
that's kind of all I heard. So that's something that
I gravitated towards.
Speaker 25 (01:27:11):
You also can't forget the sample. I mean, that was
the biggest sample ever ever, And that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:19):
Video was great. The video made the song.
Speaker 13 (01:27:21):
I went to the record store every Tuesday after I
saw that video.
Speaker 3 (01:27:25):
To ask for that record.
Speaker 13 (01:27:27):
It took months for that album to come out, and
it was so disappointing.
Speaker 3 (01:27:32):
Is that with like joy and pain that it Almo
was terrible. Yeah, not a good album, that was worse
than Salmn Pepper, But.
Speaker 24 (01:27:40):
That was a gateway for many people in the suburbs
who didn't really know much about hip hop outside of
maybe some ll and runneem C. Where like you heard
that on the radio, you saw the video you went
roller skating or ice skating, and that was like the
song that was played like it was a huge, huge
song and and it's yeah, it's kind of cheesy, I guess,
(01:28:01):
but I was great.
Speaker 25 (01:28:02):
See it's again. Age plays a factor here because it
was too commercial for me. It was like playing a
hammer song. So you know, unless you were cutting it up,
it was not the song to be played. I mean,
there's no way you'd play that if you were a
jungle brother, straight out the jungle kind of a guy.
There's no way you were playing that if you were
so knee deep in what public enemy was trying to
(01:28:23):
throw out, so those things, you wouldn't even think about it.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
You wouldn't even think about a song like that.
Speaker 13 (01:28:29):
I enjoyed it because I was a kid, dre no
I get it, but I started I like the shit
so much that I dove all in and I was
like trying to get all the underground tapes, and I
have them.
Speaker 7 (01:28:42):
I have them.
Speaker 13 (01:28:44):
Like we'll talk about some of these, maybe possibly more
obscure albums that came out that year that were really
really great that people.
Speaker 3 (01:28:53):
Tend to forget about. But I was all about it.
Speaker 5 (01:28:55):
Man.
Speaker 13 (01:28:55):
Every Tuesday I roll into Big D record stores, ride
my bike over there about two miles away. Took every
dollar I had from cutting grass, every dollar I had.
Speaker 58 (01:29:06):
On me buying tapes eight dollars and twenty six cents
cutting grass, not selling it, Thank you, thank God.
Speaker 23 (01:29:17):
The slang back then was stuff like cold crush dope,
fresh chilling, baked daddy. Nobody's gonna get this except for
Jason probably and another listeners out there who have kids
that are like teenagers these days. Imagine if imagine if
today's slang was back then, you would have had like
the Skippity Ohio toilet Crew, or like the fucking yacht Boys,
(01:29:41):
or what's the other one that they used nowadays, the
the Riz Rascals, the Sigma Crewe.
Speaker 24 (01:29:52):
You can't see Wade, but he has a fat Joe
beard going on that no one.
Speaker 2 (01:29:56):
Wants to talk about.
Speaker 3 (01:30:00):
He got that box color you.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Totally got that fat Joe Beard thing.
Speaker 13 (01:30:04):
There's no no color treatment on this, I promise a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:30:08):
But you shaved it a certain.
Speaker 24 (01:30:10):
It's it's it shaved a certain kind of way. It
looks like he has a certain color now to it.
Speaker 9 (01:30:16):
That Antonio Moury from the golf course.
Speaker 13 (01:30:19):
I promise you guys, it's very really yeah, a Puerto
Rican barber.
Speaker 3 (01:30:25):
It is cut very precise. I will say that. Yeah, yeah,
that's that's all me. I mean, whatever, good for you man.
Speaker 25 (01:30:31):
Speaking of precise, I don't think many people realize that
at this time cars were a big deal and pulling
out the back seats and putting the cars to.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
Their systems box cars.
Speaker 3 (01:30:41):
For Kevin myself, yeah, we're very very big.
Speaker 25 (01:30:43):
And that's why he pushed the key and yeah that's
why groups like to that crew was was making some
noise here with move Something. That album was big in
eighty eight, and that's why all the dre stuff did
very very well, and the easy stuff as people were
bumping it heavy, heavy, heavy bass and you know white
(01:31:04):
boys with their little rabbits and those terrible cars that
they used to have a hatchback. I had a two
eighty Z with that hatch with a little whale tail. Uh,
and I definitely had the system. I had to pull
out ken Wood with the fos gates in the back,
and yeah, I had it hooked up.
Speaker 7 (01:31:24):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:31:25):
For sure.
Speaker 23 (01:31:26):
Bass is like the first rap music that I really
heard growing up in South Florida. So I remember all
that two Live Crew, DJ, Magic, Mike, all that stuff, Right.
Speaker 13 (01:31:34):
I had a Mercury Ellen seven hatchback and what what
was that? Kind of like a knockoff kind of subs
and stereo stuff. I didn't have no money to buy
Pioneer and ken Wood and all that.
Speaker 9 (01:31:49):
Yeah, a lot of punk or whatever it was.
Speaker 3 (01:31:51):
Punk were so expensive, keV that was very high end.
It was before audio flowers. Uh, it'll come to me.
It'll come to me in a bit.
Speaker 13 (01:32:02):
But we you know, we took every dollar we had
to sink into the car stereo to get a couple
of twelves in the back.
Speaker 3 (01:32:08):
Yeah, and you needed the amp under the seat. Gotta
have the amp. But you always equalizer.
Speaker 25 (01:32:13):
You always had the audio like that little high pitch
thing every time, like you turn the music up and
like put your foot on the pedal.
Speaker 3 (01:32:20):
No, with like this high, this high pitch sound.
Speaker 25 (01:32:24):
That like you know, fell like a reving like yeah,
from the actual amps pushing everything.
Speaker 3 (01:32:29):
It sounded like a little turbo motor, so funny stuff.
Speaker 24 (01:32:33):
The the beauty I think of eighty eight was it
no longer was like simple rap, at least for me,
like I remember, and again it's different for you guys.
But like the Houdini's, the utfos, even run DMC fun
part of stuff. It was very simplistic, right, and then
it started getting a little edgier, and then like by
(01:32:55):
eighty eight, that's when you had slick rick, you had
cool too rap, you had big Daddy King and and
quite honestly, I gotta think it influenced groups like even
on a DMC who made like beats to the rhymes,
which is probably more on the edge of your side
the music they made previously, you know what I'm true,
So it was a different sound public Enemy or ultramag
(01:33:17):
It changed. It almost forced people to take the craft
serious and write rhymes, becoming lyricists because rock Him, I
mean he was at the point there was nobody even close.
Speaker 3 (01:33:32):
To rock Him right Followly, it was just a crazy wrection.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
Was there any rapper in your mind close to rock him.
Speaker 3 (01:33:40):
I know you could say, like, yeah, Kine was close.
Kaine was close, but rock Him was just he.
Speaker 25 (01:33:46):
He just catapulted immediately to a different level because he
came out of nowhere with the knowledge, you know what
I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
And I say something that you guys are gonna hate.
Speaker 2 (01:33:56):
Yeah, you don't like rock Him.
Speaker 3 (01:33:58):
No, I love rock Him, but I didn't like that.
Speaker 5 (01:34:00):
We gotta make this.
Speaker 9 (01:34:00):
We gotta make this a segment.
Speaker 23 (01:34:02):
Every episode is always way to be like, hey, guys,
can I say something real quick?
Speaker 2 (01:34:05):
You all gonna give a shitty opinion. People are gonna criticize.
Speaker 3 (01:34:08):
Let me get my third least favorite of that record. Yeah,
you guys are gonna hate it. No, I didn't.
Speaker 13 (01:34:13):
I didn't care for that album, the one with all
the Yeah, I didn't care for it. I thought it
was I thought there were like two good songs.
Speaker 3 (01:34:20):
I really liked that album.
Speaker 13 (01:34:21):
Man, maybe three, maybe three. I thought I thought that
his vocals were way too loud. It wasn't it wasn't
it wasn't mastered right, it was.
Speaker 2 (01:34:30):
It was weird.
Speaker 3 (01:34:31):
I can't wait to have him on the show and
let him know that I.
Speaker 13 (01:34:34):
Don't know what it is about that one, but that
that's not one of my favorite albums from Eric being
rock him.
Speaker 23 (01:34:39):
Well, didn't you have a blug with like Rock Kim's
daughter and he was supposed to get on our show
or some shit like that.
Speaker 2 (01:34:44):
That was like six years ago.
Speaker 24 (01:34:46):
No, I wish for thinking that's what happens with the
you know, trying to schedule interviews.
Speaker 23 (01:34:52):
So nineteen eighty eight, you know, fantastic for hip hop.
We just covered it, we're playing it, everybody's absorbing it.
Eighty eight was the absolute worst year for baseball cards.
Speaker 2 (01:35:06):
It was gonna be something like that, go back to nineteen.
Speaker 23 (01:35:09):
If you look at nineteen eighty eight cards least valuable set,
they are the least valuable sets.
Speaker 2 (01:35:14):
There is no like.
Speaker 23 (01:35:15):
Eighty nine had your Griffies, eighty seven had your Bo
Jackson's and Barry Bonds. Eighty six had your Contricush. You
know you had you had those star players every year.
Nineteen eighty eight you have like a fucking Roberto Alum
rated rookie and Jim Abbott USA team and you have
to get the traded set to get that card.
Speaker 3 (01:35:36):
Oh there's more there.
Speaker 9 (01:35:37):
If you have any cards from nineteen eighty eight, just
fucking burn them.
Speaker 16 (01:35:41):
Right now.
Speaker 3 (01:35:41):
I mean I set it up with such energy and
like you know, music was going.
Speaker 24 (01:35:46):
And then and all of a sudden, it's like two,
let's get in a mixto before Kevin starts talking about fucking.
Speaker 23 (01:35:51):
Mellows one one good card from nineteen eighty eight Bo
Jackson football.
Speaker 3 (01:35:56):
Rookie, Yeah college wonderful.
Speaker 21 (01:36:00):

There were so many troops bluely at that time, and
so many people just learning stuff.
Speaker 7 (01:37:49):

Speaker 37 (01:39:07):

Speaker 6 (01:39:09):
That slate back back in the days, he was nothing
like that.
Speaker 37 (01:39:12):
I remember when he used to fight every day, but
growing us would tell him he was never own faith.
He was pants hanging down and the seekers untied, and.
Speaker 22 (01:39:20):
A lot of type thing gonna chilt the center side.
Speaker 37 (01:39:23):
A lot of neighborhood people treated him back and said
if he was the worst thing as mom's ever had,
they said that he would grow up, could be nothing
but a hulum or either in jail or someone would
shoot him.
Speaker 5 (01:39:33):

He's a different approach to an album that is based
on a theory of of looking at the world from
the black side of you, you know, which is rarely
looked at and basically you know it's you know, produced
by the bomb squash onself that shackly keep Shaki Hense

Speaker 15 (01:40:37):
We're always making sure that we got the ball roller

Speaker 16 (01:40:57):

Speaker 5 (01:41:36):
All in the sprint of situations unreal. I got a
raw deal for I'm looking for the steal. I'm going
for that steel.
Speaker 41 (01:41:56):
Got me in the st.
Speaker 17 (01:41:59):
Me, it got me in the sex, then it got me.
Speaker 5 (01:42:06):
In the sex.
Speaker 17 (01:42:10):
Yeah, called a seo falling asleep on that throw.
Speaker 16 (01:42:16):
I tripped his gun and he didn't When I said,
so that if that man's the man got served along
with the time they served this and say one the served.
Speaker 17 (01:42:24):
To understand my demands. I gave a warning. I wanted the.
Speaker 16 (01:42:27):

Speaker 16 (01:42:41):
They couldn't try not saying we had a force to instigate.
Speaker 17 (01:42:44):
I'm prison riot.
Speaker 5 (01:42:45):
This is what it takes for peace.
Speaker 16 (01:42:46):
So I just took a piece of black for black
inside time to the least freedom to get out to
the ghetto. They'll sell out six olds.
Speaker 5 (01:42:54):
We got where y'all to put their head out.
Speaker 17 (01:42:56):

Speaker 5 (01:43:14):
I had six CEOs and now it's five to go,
and I'm thereious. Call me delirious, but I'm still a captain.
I gotta wrap this time to break.
Speaker 17 (01:43:23):
As time throws a ten, I got my steel.
Speaker 5 (01:43:25):
In my right hand. Now I'm looking full of fence.
I'm looking for that fence as I been to the
court your it's about fifty two brothers.
Speaker 16 (01:43:42):

Speaker 16 (01:44:12):
The point broke from the black molax to the to
the average flucker couse.
Speaker 5 (01:44:17):
The field was black.
Speaker 16 (01:44:18):
The attitude and second whatever says on telling you.
Speaker 5 (01:44:22):
To come on, the three brothers on the run and

Speaker 18 (01:44:25):
Going whoever under estimated still weighted hoping the radio. Finally
they played it the one did how come the album

Speaker 2 (01:44:48):
Then you're doing it with the.
Speaker 18 (01:44:58):
Doing it with the the arm, something newing to keep
you doing what you're doing. This is for you and
your crewing for ruing the vicinity. I don't need no identity.
I see hands in the air that means many peace,
(01:45:19):
So why for breaking I can't stop related hip hop

pretend you to prevent you from using my instrument.
Speaker 2 (01:45:26):
To keep in mind, I.
Speaker 18 (01:45:28):
Mean to illustrate another elebrate. Immediately, hurry up and learn
their words and repeat it with me. Then soon you're

To me, this is the best year of the part.
Speaker 36 (02:34:57):
I'm gonna listen to albums to eighty eight.
Speaker 29 (02:34:59):
The simphony comes straight out of Cops, Long Live the King,
strictly business with nd Biomi's necessary. We're gonna have productions
critical beat Down Onto Magnetic takes a nation a million
to holds back Public Enemy Team, Great Events, a slick written.
Speaker 6 (02:35:10):
Follow the Leader everything rock game, straight out.
Speaker 29 (02:35:12):
The Jungle, Jungle Brooks, Lighters of Rock, MC life going
off Less, a piece of big market in four gearstets,
a sign piece of DJ on the rapper Press Prince
Jazzy Death Power, I iced t tougher than Leather on
DNC Eazy does it is.
Speaker 3 (02:35:24):
The life is too short, too short.
Speaker 8 (02:35:26):
I mean, I could go on and on and on.
Speaker 29 (02:35:28):
The foundation of the best hip hop has ever created.
Speaker 5 (02:35:30):
Just got one year when.
Speaker 27 (02:35:32):
Kally said the foundation, That's what resonated with me in
terms of the albums that he named the foundation with
hip hop would turn to what they would become.
Speaker 23 (02:35:41):
You might be one, all right, folks, flying at a
mixed number two like a Jose can say, go home,
running out of the coliseum which is now gonna be
a parking lot or something one of these days. But
in any event, I had to throw my in, any
(02:36:02):
event in because I haven't yet phenomenal, phenomenal stuff, guys.
I mean, you know, like like you said earlier way
that these are going to be a lot of the
songs that we all you know, know, all the lyrics,
too nice to have it all packaged.
Speaker 9 (02:36:16):
Up, given the three sixty little.
Speaker 23 (02:36:19):
Spice and flare on it, like Wade was saying, these
are the songs that we all know. We've heard them
a bunch of times. You know, we can probably wrap
them in our sleep. But Part two is on deck,
and I'll let the fellows get into more details on that,
but I think we're gonna, you know, dive a little deeper.
Speaker 9 (02:36:35):
Into things, maybe hit some B sides. So I'm sure
that's coming.
Speaker 3 (02:36:39):
To guys real quick. I want to ask you something.
Speaker 25 (02:36:42):
In this year, let's everybody kind of go around the
horn and say who they thought was the most influential
or the most eighty eight. So what group or solo
artists was like the quintessential when you think eighty eight?
Speaker 2 (02:36:58):
When do you think eighty eight?
Speaker 7 (02:36:59):
Who do you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:37:00):
Who's your guy? Who's your group? Who's your guy?
Speaker 24 (02:37:04):
I mean, it's hard for me not to say PE
because it takes in nation of millions.
Speaker 3 (02:37:09):
What I each album when I think of eighty eight?
Speaker 7 (02:37:11):
Right?
Speaker 3 (02:37:11):
And did that impact you in eighty eight or did
you have to get it?
Speaker 25 (02:37:15):
That's kind of what I'm saying, because it, well, it's
hard for you because you guys were fear.
Speaker 24 (02:37:21):
Fear of a Black Planet was actually the first tap
of PE that I would say I bought right got you.
Speaker 2 (02:37:30):
The first song I'm memorized is Colors by Iced Tea.
Speaker 25 (02:37:34):
Yeah, eighty eight, So I go to that because because
you told me that Iceberg Slim was like your thing.
Speaker 3 (02:37:40):
The album that was eighty nine album.
Speaker 24 (02:37:44):
But yes, the color soundtrack and the song also iced
tea rhymes a little slower, so it's easy to pick
up the you know, the cadence and the words. So
I would always try to emulate that as a as
a shorty buster. But I would say colors, and honestly,
(02:38:04):
it takes two is what I think when I think
of the Ady Eights. Yeah, that was going to the
roller skating ranking.
Speaker 2 (02:38:11):
That was when it came on.
Speaker 24 (02:38:12):
That was I wasn't hit to like the Symphony back
then or Strong Island GP fors like. It was a
little different, but I get those two in particular for sure,
what about you?
Speaker 3 (02:38:23):
For me, it was it was pe.
Speaker 25 (02:38:25):
There was no one that moved this needle like Public Enemy.
Chuck d was just a force man. And I'm so
confused because his lyrics were so important.
Speaker 3 (02:38:36):
You could write papers on each line.
Speaker 25 (02:38:40):
As a matter of fact, wrote a paper on called
Intellectual Vietnam, which he does from Terra Dome. But every
every song he has has lyrics that you could literally
write essays about.
Speaker 3 (02:38:54):
Very important, and I don't understand why he's not that
same guy.
Speaker 25 (02:39:00):
He doesn't I understand you don't write the same you know,
twenty years later, but after a certain time, he just
didn't make music like that. But eighty eight's PE, Holy shit,
the videos were so fresh and there was like so
much depth to everything. It was like not only was
was the Shockley Brothers production like chaotic and like really
(02:39:24):
like grabbing, so were everything PE did the concepts of
the videos member Beeper Tie and that crazy you know
bass Heads video and you know, putting all of the
people inside whether it was light as the MC on
the mic like a reporter. Then they also did Black
(02:39:46):
Steel in the Hour of Chaos where EPMD was in
the prison cell, like they had like a whole group
of like rappers in prison with them.
Speaker 3 (02:39:54):
So like they just did everything perfect man perfect. And
so was that group hands down? Are you asking for
one or multiple?
Speaker 7 (02:40:04):
No?
Speaker 25 (02:40:04):
What's the one group that is eighty eight to the
nth degree for you? Like if you think eighty eight,
is there a group or a person or a rapper
Juice crew?
Speaker 3 (02:40:13):
Juice crew? Okay, that's suppose.
Speaker 13 (02:40:15):
Think about Let's think about this, guys, Marlon marl In
Control Volume one with the Symphony and everybody else mc
sham born to be Wild, Big Daddy Kane long lived
with Kane biz Marky going off.
Speaker 3 (02:40:28):
It was a Juice Crew year. I get it. But
Juice Crew also had an album.
Speaker 25 (02:40:32):
In Control Volume one in Control Volume one, So uh yeah, okay,
I get it.
Speaker 3 (02:40:40):
That makes sense. keV, you have not the only one.
I could go on on. No, I just want the
one for you. keV. You got one move some I mean.
Speaker 23 (02:40:48):
In look, if it wasn't for what uh djj as
your Jeff and the Fresh Prince did, then we never
would have had Uncle Phil Carlton. Yeah, and of course
everybody his favorite butler Jeffy. Look nineteen eighty eight, again
in eighty eight. Whenever I hear like you have public
(02:41:08):
enemy rock him, those are what I think of, you.
Speaker 24 (02:41:12):
Know, when I think eighty eight, going outside of the music,
I think who framed Rocker Rabbit? I think Coming to America?
I think Twins, Cocktail, Diehard, the movie Big.
Speaker 2 (02:41:26):
So those are the things I have associations with music.
I'll tell you a quick story and then I'm done.
Eighty eight.
Speaker 24 (02:41:34):
And it comes down to always trying to fit in
and impress and being white and wanting to be accepted
in hip hop has always been a struggle for every
person who's white.
Speaker 2 (02:41:46):
It's just the reality of things.
Speaker 24 (02:41:47):
At some point, you always want to feel like you're validated,
like you have good taste, or you know what you're
talking about, or that you you know you're down with
the right crowd. In eighty eight, so this is thirty
seven years ago. This dude named Clifford Nordy. I can't
even believe I remember the name. Black dude had a
gumby like Jeff Back in the day. That was the style,
the gumbies. Right, we're trading the ironic eighty eight baseball cards,
(02:42:13):
which isn't a very black thing. It's a very white,
suburban thing, you know, trading Matt Noak's rookies. But anyway,
I told him I really liked let's get started by
mc hammer. You looked at me and he said, Hammer
is corny. Keep in mind, this is we're in what
fourth grade, this is the eighty eight. He said, you
(02:42:33):
got to listen to Big Daddy King. Now he had
an older brother. Naturally, that's how a lot of these
people get put on the good music. Right that day,
I stopped listening to Hammer and I didn't run out
and buy because I couldn't, but I did make I
made sure the next time my mom took me to
a record store that I would get a Big Daddy
(02:42:54):
Kinge record.
Speaker 2 (02:42:55):
And that's one of the first tapes that I bought
in eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (02:42:59):
I recall that was a memory of it.
Speaker 2 (02:43:02):
That was a memory. So my association was I was
shamed into liking like Daddy.
Speaker 3 (02:43:07):
Yes, And what was the name of this guy who
did this to you?
Speaker 2 (02:43:10):
Clifford Nordy.
Speaker 3 (02:43:11):
I think you need a Clifford Nordy t shirt? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I don't even know where that dude is today.
Speaker 7 (02:43:17):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (02:43:17):
So that was my story.
Speaker 25 (02:43:19):
He was your He was your bridge man, my gateway
to Big Daddy Kane, nice man Caine. I think you
know Rossa style can go tilt to the side. Caine
was the man back then. And there's no way that
you slept on him. So you know, whether you were
listening to Biz Caine, rock him Pe, it doesn't matter.
(02:43:41):
Jungle Brothers. This was a celebratory year. This was a
year that's worth raising a glass too. This is a
year that I still raise my glass and it never
goes empty. I'm always full of nineteen eighty eight. The
belly is full, and I love this shit.
Speaker 3 (02:43:58):
Do you guys have any albums from A eight?
Speaker 13 (02:44:01):
If you listen to it today, they did age well
and they still sound really really good.
Speaker 3 (02:44:06):
Let's talk about that on the next talk point.
Speaker 9 (02:44:09):
Okay, like the next clip, here's the name that they
should bring back. You know more people in this world
named cliffs.
Speaker 13 (02:44:17):
A method man's name.
Speaker 3 (02:44:18):
Cliffhanger. Hey, Cliff Cliffhanger. You know it's method man's name, right,
all right.
Speaker 25 (02:44:23):
That's right, wrap it up about that, so you know,
catch us on the next episode that that's what things
are gonna get interesting. We're gonna start doing some things
that warren't so popular in eighty eight but still has
the longevity and has that fresh stuff.
Speaker 6 (02:44:37):
Let's go because we got that branch.
Speaker 2 (02:44:42):
I know that, you know, all right, folks.
Speaker 1 (02:44:49):
That concludes part one of our nineteen eighty eight tribute
and our first episode of twenty twenty five. Stay tuned
for part two, drop it in a few weeks. Often imitated,
never duplicated. This is taken personal radio Roger the announcer.
