Speaker 23 (06:29):
Take a personal radio Episode one sixty and we are
back with part two of the nineteen eighty eight tribute,
and tensions are are.
Speaker 12 (06:38):
Hot here in the studio right now.
Speaker 23 (06:40):
It's like people sitting around Satriel's pork store talking about
what the best Italian cold cut.
Speaker 12 (06:45):
Is these days over here. But hey, we're gonna keep
it moving. We got a lot of joints on deck
for you.
Speaker 23 (06:54):
Got some of those layered cuts from those classic albums
from eighty eight, and we're gonna do it right.
Speaker 11 (07:00):
What is layered layered cuts cuts?
Speaker 23 (07:03):
The ones that are underneath the B side. They're in
the fucking sea in d Aisle. They're sitting by the
shadow and the conditioner. They're not in the Delhi or
the beer section.
Speaker 12 (07:13):
It's kind of like when Jay came over from my
Pilly cheese steak I made, and he said, you got
a fork? And I said, what does that mean? I
gotta take these peppers out. I don't eat green peppers.
I was like, what the fuck are you talking about?
Speaker 11 (07:25):
That happened today.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Yeah, it's true. I don't like green peppers. Although keV
used the data girl named sausage and peppers back in
the day. You remember that guy, I want to hear.
Speaker 12 (07:37):
Sausage was one Peppers was her cousin.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
You had a bang bang with. I'm not a fan
of peppers, although I love hot sauce. Drake cooked up
an amazing Pilly cheese steak. But there's always, you know,
that one thing that I can't do, and in this case,
it was peppers. So I asked him to give me
a fork to kind of remove the peppers. But anyway, wait,
we're talking about Philly cheese steaks. We can talk about
(08:02):
the super Bowl at the break, but let's talk about
eighty eight, the year that keV knows three songs total,
and this was this was a year that Ray Kay's like,
what's up Mike Tyson song? Play that Mike Tyson song, Kirk, Yeah,
this was this was the most important year. So Ken,
(08:25):
this is an exciting time for Drey and Wade because
it reminds him of the high school years and Kevin
I were like in preschool, so we could really appreciate,
you know, original concept and and all those great things.
But you know what, talk about appreciation, we got to appreciate.
Get on that because we have a cool giveaway that
we're gonna do for this episode, and we have some
(08:45):
great records from eighty eight. This one is a kid
in plays too hype legend. I know you guys, I
know you had the tape, right, you didn't.
Speaker 12 (08:54):
Have the record. Maybe Dre had the record.
Speaker 11 (08:56):
I don't have the tape.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Tougher than leather. I didn't buy this because at the time, I,
you know, I for some reason, I didn't love all
the songs I heard on it. But here's one that
I did love, and this was life is Too Short
by Short? Oh yeah, so this was what the classic
don't fit the feeling and what else that's better cuss words,
(09:19):
city a dope. So we got those records to give away. Curtis,
you don't get on down. So it's it's an eighty
eight tribute. This is part two. Dre did his thing
and threw some extra fucking peppers.
Speaker 12 (09:29):
On this mix, which I'm sure you'll want to like
dissect and take out.
Speaker 11 (09:35):
But it's all good. It's all good. It's all good.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Listen.
Speaker 12 (09:38):
We all try to cultivate the sound. We try to
bring you back to what eighty eight truly was. But
like I said in the first episode, these artists were very,
very different.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Man.
Speaker 12 (09:48):
Every sound that was out there was very different. You know,
to be connected to these artists, this is like the
first time you could do that. There were video shows
that really got you interested and made you understand and
know that the actual people a little bit more.
Speaker 22 (10:03):
So.
Speaker 12 (10:04):
I can't stress enough the commercial sounds of Kid and Play,
like Jay just said, that was pretty cool. The street
knowledge from NWA. Then you had Miami Bass. It was
definitely making its presence felt ye had too short iced Tea.
There wasn't a more collaborative time where people were different.
You had day La soul. Jungle Brothers, I mean they
(10:25):
gave us I'll house you who did hip house. They
were the first Jungle Brothers as an actual group, did
more styles than fucking any group out there. So cain
stets or mix a lot, Rob Bass. I mean, this
is where hip hop made the dents. So again, every
artist had their own style. That being said, part two
(10:46):
we go a little deeper with groups like Lati La
chim Chabaz, King t Mass Is a Ceremony, and of
course early Ghetto Boys and Ultramagnetic. We rounded out with
BDP slick Rick. That Great Adventures record was just a
very different record. It was produced differently, the storytelling was
like nothing we've ever heard before. So eighty eight is
(11:09):
that year. It's special. So you'll never find individuality like
this at any one time in.
Speaker 11 (11:14):
Hip hop music.
Speaker 12 (11:15):
So as we put this show together, balance is the key.
So this hits every tone for that year, there's obscure cuts.
We showed depth and diversity of the culture. This was
the year when hip hop wasn't just the genre, but
it was a movement, and these songs made us all
want to definitely learn more about the culture and dive
in full force. This is nineteen eighty eight one of
(11:37):
my favorite years of all time, and I hope you
enjoy the interpretation. I want to hear that whole thing
in Stephen Hawking voice.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
I wanted the orchestra to play them off.
Speaker 12 (11:47):
That was God damn.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
You know, back then, slick Rick, you know, you talk
about Rick and he was kind of it was like
the legend of slick Rick back then. Back then a
lot of this the only time. The only thing you
knew about slick Rick was Lotty Dottie, and you were
impatiently waiting for more from slick Rick because all you
might have is like a dusty ass tape recorded off
(12:12):
of a mixed show or something with Lotty Dottie on it,
and you're like, when is slick Rick coming out? These
are the kind of situations that we were seeing back
in eighty eight. It's kind of like you heard something
like I heard Ego tripping by ultramag but that was it.
So it was like the legend of Ultramagnetic and you're
impatiently waiting the album for the album to drop, and
(12:33):
then when it finally did, you just go crazy and
scoop it up immediately. That's the era that we're talking
about here, and that's what made it so fascinating. We
got a glimpse of a culture. You know, the four
of us are not dre originally from New York, but
we're pretty much not from New York or LA. So
you're being presented with a culture that's so new to
you that it was very easy as a young, impressionable,
(12:56):
early teenager to get very wrapped up in this this
break new thing that was so fucking cool, and every
song was different. You talked about JB's their first big
song was the house song, but that was okay because
it was so new, Whereas nowadays when somebody tried that shit,
it would get shited on immediately, terrible. That's that's not
the way it was in eighty eight, and that's what
made it so cool. Raise your hand. If you had
(13:17):
the Dapper Dan spray paint bibs, I had them, shits man,
I had the spray paint Aaron.
Speaker 12 (13:23):
If you think for a second, as a white dude,
I would ever go near a Dapper Dan fucking piece
of clothing and feel like I was legitimately fucking normal
walking down the street. You're crazy, So answering definitely know
that might have worked in Milwaukee, but believe me, I
was never wearing a bedazzled Louis Vauton.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Shirt that you didn't have an MCM hat.
Speaker 12 (13:46):
I chose not to do that because it was kind
of goofy.
Speaker 11 (13:49):
I won't lie.
Speaker 12 (13:49):
I have an MCM wallet at this stage of my life.
But I would never have the fanny pack or any
nonsense like that because it was very corny.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
It just had We had the steel toad shoe, use
the polka dot shirt, the whole nine.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Yeah, going to the Kevin, I had Greg Jeffreys card
you got.
Speaker 11 (14:07):
I would never wear a Dapper Dan suit.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Like Greenwell, Gold Cup Rookie, don't hey, don't get me wrong.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
It was certainly not a real Dapper Dan. It was
some chick that spray painted some bibs for me. Had
hey or fifty bucks and she spray painted to the
LA King's logo on there for me. Anyway, Hey, I'm
really looking forward to in the break in the spirit
of digging deeper talking about some of these albums that
you might not even hear in the mix. But we're
also very very cool albums that came out in eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Because there's so many of them.
Speaker 24 (14:36):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
This was the explosion year and we would get into
more of that real soon, but for now, end up
with the yappin. Let's get to the wrap and it's
eighty eight baby, let's go.

agree what I want to do this, I get straight,
meditate like a Buddhist. I'm dropping flavor of my behavior.
It's a hereditary, but my technique very necessary. Blame it
(16:07):

Speaker 16 (17:08):
A man hollow espress to make the subject because they
like to follow the words.
Speaker 7 (17:12):
Let out the trip the records offend again and the
gain in again.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
Yo, you're on the other end watching brother fren.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
No front with no help.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
They don't look what I'm expressing myself. It's crazy to
see people need with society. Walcome the people, but not
me ruthless. It's the way that goes. They know I'm
the same rhymes with stem to be original or the kid.
Speaker 16 (17:32):
Whether they hear Bob sat forget about the get off
the wrap for the pop shut to some decisions comes
that home, just getting the useful fantasy wearing up on
the microphone. Yeah they won't reality, but you're hearing none
to rather exaggerate a little fiction. Some say no the
drugs and take a stance, but after the show they're
gonna looking for the job.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
Man, or they fan my group from the radio here

Speaker 6 (01:16:38):

Speaker 12 (01:18:33):

Speaker 11 (01:19:07):

Speaker 7 (01:19:11):

Speaker 6 (01:19:12):
We say hey, you know the boys haven't.
Speaker 26 (01:19:14):

Speaker 16 (01:19:55):
Not not not not not, but you ladies wanna see

Speaker 6 (01:20:11):
So your whole damn body, we.
Speaker 16 (01:20:12):
Will control your So stay calm, don't get along, gonna
be like your ladies with a deadly charm.
Speaker 6 (01:20:18):
Gonna go to work or your fellas too. Make you
want to do the things we do because we can't play.
It's in your test. You gotta kee rock into the
go go sound. You gotta keep walking all day or
night with the night time the mike over my soul,
shake kids, your shirt, the town. We've got the best
fall around to do. So when as the d J
(01:20:40):
get in and play, everybody say nobody saying yes yes, yes, yes,
(01:21:25):
yes yes.
Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
Coming out of Mixed one that was rolling with Kid
and Play, and you guys know better than I do.
Kid and Play. Were they super popular in eighty eight
Because I really didn't know them until, if I'm being honest,
until House Party, which is nineteen ninety, I think.
Speaker 12 (01:21:45):
I wouldn't say that they were the most popular. Here's
the thing to see a dude with a fade like Caine,
that's extremely light skin. You almost thought he could have
been white. And they kind of went the part yeah,
and they kind of went the comedic route. It was
almost gimmicky, and we weren't used to gimmick stuff going
(01:22:05):
on in nineteen eighty eight. These were hardcore dudes. You know,
Cain came out with a fucking high top fade, but
Caine was not gimmicky. So to have a gimmick dancing
all that shit, it was a little awkward and you
didn't really know how to approach it. But the fact
that you saw the getting funky video where those dudes
could dance like no one's business that the foot, you know,
(01:22:28):
click thing together and then jumping through the foot, you know,
it wasn't that kind of dancing. They were really like
breaking and getting down. And to be honest, Herbie Lovebug
was the fucking premiere producer of the time, and this
was a little deeper than say, like a Salt and
Pepper record, so number it was great.
Speaker 31 (01:22:46):
Would you say they were like the male saltan Pepper, Yes,
even the Salt and Pepper us, your dumb end. They
were in the tramp video yeah, that's how they That's
when they were first seen. They were in the tramp
video and then they dropped that single last Night, which
is on the album, and it's from.
Speaker 2 (01:23:00):
Much earlier than eighty eight, but a really dope song.
That album. Half of it was really really good and
then half of it was really corny, but it was
good enough to where you skipped through and just hit
the really good songs over and over and over. Pretty
good album, and it was a lot of fun. And
yeah they were so they had a fucking cartoon a
couple of years later.
Speaker 11 (01:23:19):
That is true, Wade. I forgot about that.
Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
So you said something that I want to know if
you feel like that is the case for a lot
of the records of eighty eight. You said half of
it was really really good and half of it was
really really corny. Now, I don't think many albums were
like ill Mack where he had like ten bangers or
or nine whatever. And let's let's take run DMC for example,
(01:23:44):
tougher than Leather. Right, you had Runs House, you had
Mary Mary, you had beats of the rhymes, but I
think the B side was kind of weak, right, Like,
I'm not going out like that and do That was
how You Do It?
Speaker 6 (01:24:01):
D was really cool.
Speaker 12 (01:24:02):
I think it was good, But I think, really, Jay,
what you're getting at is these producers for the first time.
You gotta remember hip hop records that came out in
eighty eight. If they sold one hundred thousand copies, that
was a success. So the fact that these dudes were
for the first time thinking can I make a commercial
record that can cross over and get white kids, Black kids,
(01:24:24):
Puerto Rican kids dancing in nightclubs. Can I get a
club hit as well as a radio hit? They were
thinking for the first time. Differently, they were saying, can
I make hits? And that is what I think was
happening in nineteen eighty eight. Can I make a hit
but still be hard? And that's where it was all going.
Big Daddy Kane was a hardcore hip hop rapper. You know,
(01:24:46):
his lyrics were strong, but then all of a sudden,
there were like, hey, he could be a sex symbol.
We can make this smooth kind of rap where he's
like the ladies man. And then the video with the
next album, Yeah, the videos kind of played into that,
but smooth operator. I think we're like, let's try a
little of this to see if that can like rub
off and move in that direction.
Speaker 11 (01:25:07):
That's all I would say.
Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
I would say that Tougher Leather is far and away
their best album.
Speaker 12 (01:25:11):
They wait, wait, come on, slow down doing this. I
don't know why you do this.
Speaker 3 (01:25:17):
I mean a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:25:18):
What's better than Tougher than Leather that run DMC made
as far as the whole album, tell me.
Speaker 12 (01:25:22):
One, God, there isn't one that's crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
What's what's better Raising Hell?
Speaker 3 (01:25:28):
Not at all? First, that's you know, in every episode
you are good for one of the most crazy, absurd
opinions on the planet. You're saying that's the best run DMC.
Speaker 2 (01:25:42):
Absolutely absolutely, but they're all pretty damned special other than
Raising Hell. Yes, that was more impactful though, because that
was like the o G the first one. When you
when you compare the quality of the songs and like
what they do in the songs and how produced in
the sound, it's such a huge jump up. It's like
(01:26:04):
jump up, like pe jump up. It's a huge jump
up in sound. Listen to it again.
Speaker 3 (01:26:10):
We're gonna agree to disagree, but again in the break,
you also said that you couldn't get with coold Wrap
after the second album, So I mean, yeah, I could
here wild opinions, man, why we Love You? And that's
you know, your aa ron from millawauke A. So this
is the necessary balance. Going back to the question though, Dre,
(01:26:35):
do you think many albums back then really have like
a handful of dope joints in the rest of or
fillers or do you recall that many albums that were
like dope throughout.
Speaker 12 (01:26:46):
The entire It was really hard to get us straight
out the jungle, you know, it was really hard to
get you know, albums that had multiple, multiple songs that
you didn't skip. The audio two album Good there's a
few tracks that were fantastic.
Speaker 11 (01:27:04):
But that album couldn't hold water.
Speaker 12 (01:27:07):
But you know there was two or three that were like, damn,
it's just so out there and different and amazing. So
people it was all filler back then, and if they
got one or two major tracks, I mean, rob Bass,
I mean, I can't stress this. It was a terrible record.
Album Power wasn't great. The Sonics album wasn't great.
Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
Great songs, but I don't think that was one that
had more than half and very.
Speaker 12 (01:27:32):
Few could be an EPMD strictly business. I mean, very
few could be a Day, Last Soul.
Speaker 3 (01:27:39):
He was the best, an album that was pretty solid
front to back.
Speaker 12 (01:27:43):
Bdpron was phenomenal front to back.
Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
Yeah, but if you know they they definitely had some
some duds. Every everybody had a couple of duds for sure.
I think if you had more than half of great
songs on your album, you were doing great.
Speaker 5 (01:27:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:27:57):
Absolutely, A way you could attest to this, weren't they
doing fucking love songs? And DJ cut? So you had
like three songs J intro and they were good. But
what I'm saying is you had like three songs that
were like slated for the record that had nothing to
do with the group.
Speaker 11 (01:28:15):
Do you know what I'm trying to say?
Speaker 12 (01:28:16):
So in a mix of twelve to fifteen songs, you
had three that were already had nothing to do with
the group. So it was really hard to have back
to back hits.
Speaker 11 (01:28:27):
It's just the way it was.
Speaker 2 (01:28:28):
The first show. I feel like we played the hits.
We played the ones those were the strongest, Those and
Loves you probably know a lot of the words to them. Well,
let's go down a list real quick of some other
really good albums that came out that year that we
didn't get to speaking about last show. And here are
just a few examples. I made some notes, believe it
or not. We talked about life is too Short already,
so I'll skip that one. We talked a little bit
(01:28:49):
about King t Actapool, a really good album, guys, that
kind of came out of nowhere, and I think the
bass video really set it off. And the use of
the two DJs in the video was huge. That's what
made it so.
Speaker 3 (01:29:01):
Hip hop to me.
Speaker 11 (01:29:02):
And it was do you know who produced that track?
Speaker 3 (01:29:05):
Bass?
Speaker 2 (01:29:08):
Was at DJ Pool Di Batt, Bobcat Okay, I know
it was some care Yeah. Hey how about Duby Fresh,
World's greatest entertainer. You guys remember that album?
Speaker 6 (01:29:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (01:29:17):
Again, perfect example of what Jason was talking about. Half
not not even half good. Maybe three songs that you
would play out other than that did not work?
Speaker 11 (01:29:30):
Didn't work.
Speaker 23 (01:29:30):
So all those like best of eighty eight mix rap
albums that I bought in like nineteen ninety three had
all the songs that we really gave a shit.
Speaker 12 (01:29:41):
About the US, Right, that's right, all right, good.
Speaker 3 (01:29:44):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (01:29:45):
How about we played Posse on Broadway? Swass another awesome album?
Speaker 11 (01:29:50):
Again?
Speaker 14 (01:29:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (01:29:51):
Wait, not an awesome album? There was about three songs
maybe that you could listen to. The videos helped sell
the record when we were four team butter.
Speaker 2 (01:30:01):
Note Biscuits was great.
Speaker 12 (01:30:02):
I don't even that now.
Speaker 11 (01:30:03):
That is paralle No, it's no good.
Speaker 12 (01:30:05):
No, yeah, I didn't have a tape that I remember
that tape.
Speaker 23 (01:30:08):
I remember in fifth grade we went on a trip
to Washington, DC, and I remember this, this kid in
my class brought that cassette tape and I listened to
that album and that's when I got down with the
cert mix a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:30:24):
His voice on Posse on Broadway was excellent, man, and
the video really made the song. Videos were a big
part of everything, and.
Speaker 12 (01:30:30):
They were I'll tell you an album that I'll tell
you an album that did not have one hundred percent hits,
but as it aged they became bigger hits. And that
is the Bismarcky album.
Speaker 2 (01:30:42):
Great album.
Speaker 12 (01:30:43):
So when it first came out, it did not everyone
wanted like, you know, ten types of vapor songs, you know,
really major hits attached to a video. You thought like
this was like that's.
Speaker 11 (01:30:57):
What we were looking for, very juice crew.
Speaker 12 (01:30:59):
But the truth is twenty years later, maybe even more
those songs that were kind of like on the low,
really became standouts, and they were fantastic, like.
Speaker 11 (01:31:11):
This, Mark is going off, is going off, picking boogers.
Speaker 2 (01:31:16):
Hyming with the big exactly so many good samples.
Speaker 12 (01:31:20):
Producers were using it in their hooks and scratches, and
that kind of made the songs become, uh, you know,
living infamy.
Speaker 2 (01:31:29):
And he was he was more serious about rapping then.
It wasn't just a big clown show.
Speaker 11 (01:31:33):
But we didn't know that, do you know what I'm saying?
Speaker 2 (01:31:36):
No, picking boogers was yeah, of course, how about the
cash Money and Marvelous Well Sleeping Bag Records had a
whole bunch of stuff back then.
Speaker 12 (01:31:46):
Yeah, they did, but you know, coming out of a
different style, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:31:50):
And you guys enjoyed the danger Zone album from Tough Crew.
Speaker 12 (01:31:54):
Oh I love it.
Speaker 11 (01:31:55):
Tough crewis. I will say this. I will say this,
and I think I've mentioned it.
Speaker 12 (01:32:02):
I don't know if I mentioned on the show, but
DJ Too Tough I saw in concert run DMC Tough
Crew Beasts, and I want to say it was in
that eighty eight time and Too Tough fucking ripped up
the set. This was in Miami Baseball stadium and nobody
(01:32:24):
fucking touched the Tough crew that night.
Speaker 23 (01:32:26):
Now, there wasn't any baseball stadiums in Miami in nineteen
eighty eight.
Speaker 11 (01:32:29):
Yeah there was.
Speaker 12 (01:32:30):
It was like in the field and let me say this,
there were gunshots while while his set was going on.
And dude, no one ripped turntables like that because no
offense to run DMC or the Beasts. But like, uh,
you know, the Beast's DJ was just not great. Hurricane
Hurricane Hurricane Dude, he could barely scratch and for the
(01:32:54):
most part, neither could jam Master j God rest his soul.
But too Tough was doing shit like Cash Money, like
he was ripping shit up, and he was the hottest
fucking scratcher back then that were putting out records.
Speaker 3 (01:33:09):
Was it already like a given that Philly had the
best DJs when you when you consider Cash Money and
two Top and now Jeff because Jeff Miss.
Speaker 12 (01:33:21):
I mean, they did have the best DJs. I don't
know how, but they did.
Speaker 2 (01:33:25):
And I'll tell you what. Philly was a serious, serious,
a serious competitor. And why back then they had a
ton of music in eighty eight. Think about it, man,
I mean it all started with like Steady b This
schooly D dropped Smoke Some Kill, which was a good album.
Speaker 11 (01:33:42):
That was a terrible record.
Speaker 2 (01:33:43):
You listen to it now and you might not like
it as much, but at the time it was pretty
It was pretty fresh in eighty eight.
Speaker 11 (01:33:49):
But eighty eight did start off a nice new crop.
Speaker 12 (01:33:53):
You know, you had the fabulous life with Hilltop Hustlers
all of that, I mean, and it did change and
bring some new blood.
Speaker 11 (01:34:03):
That was nice.
Speaker 2 (01:34:04):
When you go back and listen to the Jazzy Jeff
and Fresh Prince record, Now that was a double album
which was super rare. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and it was
kind of like the first album had most of the
rapping songs and the second side had a lot of
d J Jazzy Jeff featured songs.
Speaker 3 (01:34:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:34:19):
It was only one more set though, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:34:22):
But it was really long on record. It was actually
a double album.
Speaker 55 (01:34:26):
Yea.
Speaker 3 (01:34:27):
All these all these like Jazzy's in the House kind
of records or the Human video game like those are
like it was like at the time, like you know,
like DJA Premiere, Deep Concentration, It was like stuff like that.
Speaker 11 (01:34:40):
It was like mixing on record.
Speaker 3 (01:34:43):
Yeah, but like I think I want to say the
first single didn't even It was brand New Funk and
like that's probably one of my favorite word songs made.
I think it's very bad, but they didn't really blow
They didn't blow up until I think parents just don't understand.
Yeah came out after No No. Brand New Funk was
actually the lead single off the album. I don't think
(01:35:06):
it had much success. It was the two that came
after the video.
Speaker 23 (01:35:11):
The video was big Yeah, and it wasn't there a
song that had like the jingle from I Dream of
Jeanie or something.
Speaker 12 (01:35:17):
It was the first album Rock, the first album Rock
the House had some great cuts, magnificent jazzy jezz, the
touch of jazz.
Speaker 11 (01:35:25):
Holy.
Speaker 23 (01:35:25):
Let me ask you guys this in nineteen eighty eight,
did you pin Will Smith to become like what he
became as far as like being in a sitcom and
then blown up through Fresh Prince of bel Air or
did you guys think, going back to talking about Kidd
and Play earlier, do you think like like Will Smith
kind of emulated what they did No and they took
(01:35:48):
it to another path and got to another tier.
Speaker 12 (01:35:51):
I don't think so, because Will Smith would have never
had his success without Benny Medina. So Benny Medina was
the kind of visionary and there's all types of rumors
out there about some gay shit, you know. And because
originally he's the producer of that show, he's Jlo's you know,
(01:36:11):
he's Jlo's manager. Fresh Prince of bel Air was offered
to somebody else. Mc shan was fucking offered to mc
shan get out of here, yes, crazy, And Benny Medina
was telling shan on some like download shit, hey, you know,
and he's like, I don't get down like that motherfucker
(01:36:34):
that was supposed to be emc shan's show.
Speaker 11 (01:36:37):
Really crazy crazy stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:36:39):
I'll tell you the thing about Fresh Prince, I kind
of knew he was going to be big. It's his
persona and his charisma on on the camera and on
the stage. He commanded the stage man. And he was
a good fucking rapper. I mean, you can freestyle.
Speaker 3 (01:36:53):
He was good.
Speaker 2 (01:36:55):
And he he just had the charisma like an actor,
like he didn't have to try.
Speaker 12 (01:36:59):
It was nat just kind of like people like Rock,
the Rock from wrestling.
Speaker 2 (01:37:03):
Yes, yes, he was like the Rock.
Speaker 12 (01:37:06):
He took his presence from the stage and from an
mc and he incorporated that into his acting and it was.
Speaker 23 (01:37:12):
Just imagine if mc shan took the role and Will
Smith would look like what mc shan looks like.
Speaker 16 (01:37:20):
Toffee mantu toffee, a sola shaman shizzle with mas.
Speaker 6 (01:37:26):
He already notes, see back in the day they could
solace your ass.
Speaker 11 (01:37:31):
My career is fucked because of the ship.
Speaker 22 (01:37:33):
I did.
Speaker 19 (01:37:33):
Ship.
Speaker 6 (01:37:33):
I said about.
Speaker 49 (01:37:34):
Bennie Boat and he has a trailer and he has
the Shan Shannon is one of those dudes so that
get off of the ramp in West Palm on forty
fifth and.
Speaker 2 (01:37:46):
He's holding his sign asking me selling flowers. Yeah, did
you guys like light as a rock?
Speaker 3 (01:37:53):
I'm like Sean Price, man, I didn't listen to female rappers.
That's crazy.
Speaker 12 (01:37:59):
Well, I was young, so in nineteen eighty eight I
listened to Paul al.
Speaker 11 (01:38:04):
And guess what, and guess what, Sean Price loves fucking light.
Speaker 3 (01:38:10):
Sorry, yeah, no, I know, but at eighty eight, I
so young. I really didn't like Hey.
Speaker 2 (01:38:14):
The first time I heard her, I thought it was
a teenage boy because her hair well kind of looked
like yeah, her hair was crazy, and she was wearing
a sweatsuit. I thought it was a teenage boy.
Speaker 11 (01:38:24):
Without the without the hear no, we we'd have no idea.
Speaker 2 (01:38:28):

But back then I didn't think that.
Speaker 3 (01:39:03):

Listen, this was just a special time, just like ninety
four ninety five was for you guys, Jay and and keV.
This is that special window where you're just so impressionable
that it was everything, and that's you know, that's why
we know every word to every song, and it's you know,
we smile and think of these memories. And you listen
to the album and even though it doesn't age well,
(01:40:10):
you still love it anyway. And even some of the
songs are super whack, you still like him anyway. That
kind of stuff, it's sentimental.
Speaker 11 (01:40:16):
This era was tight, kind of like Kev's T shirt
when he leans back.
Speaker 23 (01:40:21):
So so right now we got we got Taylor, We

Audience in entertain.
Speaker 57 (01:43:03):
Them a lot more of them, and they're willing to
pay for this element identity, style, longevity. The whole rap
community adopted self populent style, hookads, the pumas, British workers,
clock qualabies, and then the colors and the cagos. This's
the whole part of the uniform. We all just adapted
and ran with it. The jeury came about like kind
(01:43:25):

the manic an even more spark, even more beauty, just
add more flavor to yourself.

It's a form part of the resume.
Speaker 57 (01:43:34):
You know, give something to look at, shows you your status,

Who got all of stoff from the Jamaicans? The clock qualabies,
the slacks, Cago hats and the gold see.

The jewelry and stuff like that.

What have I given? Hip hop?

Speaker 23 (02:49:15):
All right, folks, you know what time it is, Same
old jingled, same old saying. Put it on the shelf,
all right, another one, another one for the shelf. But
also while you're putting this episode on your shelf, make
make room for some records, because we got some good
giveaways from Get on Down. Jason's going to get into
(02:49:36):
that in just a moment, but first want to say
thank you, gentlemen, thank you for the history lesson. I
knew more than five songs on this episode. I would
say maybe about eight or nine. In any event, I
had to throw my at any there it is. In
any event, great job, great show, Jason.
Speaker 3 (02:49:57):
How do they win records? So real simple. We are
going to put out this show. You're gonna listen to
this show. Obviously you had to listen to this part
to know what to do. To enter. You are going
to make a post of your favorite record from eighty eight.
You're gonna tell us why it's your favorite record from
(02:50:17):
eighty eight. You're gonna tag, take a personal radio and
for bonus points, if you want to be entered twice
to win, you're gonna let us know who was the
best female rapper from the Golden Era.
Speaker 23 (02:50:28):
And if you want to get bonus points, take a
picture of your favorite Don Russ or tops card tag.
Speaker 3 (02:50:35):
Of course, if you have an Ellis Burks All Star
Rookie or Jeff Musselman, post that shit and you'll get
another entry.
Speaker 23 (02:50:43):
Into the Canitos Santiago's are worth double points.
Speaker 3 (02:50:48):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (02:50:49):
I'm still upset about your disagreement with me. On Run DMC. Dammit, dude, the.
Speaker 3 (02:50:54):
Whole world disagrees with you. Wait, but that's why we
love you.
Speaker 19 (02:50:58):
Me.
Speaker 2 (02:50:58):
I thought that was automatic. Like nobody even argues you
truly believe that.
Speaker 3 (02:51:04):
Coffer is their best album without a catalog.
Speaker 12 (02:51:08):
That's like saying that's like saying the movie was like
you know, Academy Award nominee.
Speaker 3 (02:51:12):
There say so, like like like without a doubt is
what you're saying. Yeah, how about this another entry into
the contest. Can I find one person who agrees with
Wade That's Tougher than Leather is the best Run DMC
album all time? Make a post and stand on that
business as they say, make a post to say business,
(02:51:35):
that is what is my favorite album without a doubt?
Tag us and tag Wad. It'll be entered again to
this content. I want to give away this record to
somebody who believes that.
Speaker 2 (02:51:45):
Here's another one for you. Tell us the name of
the Derek B album from eighty eight stream. I love
Derek p Man, I love that album.
Speaker 5 (02:51:53):
You Derek rip.
Speaker 3 (02:51:55):
Before we get out of here, I know we didn't
we read off our favorite albums with eight last I
forget how we ended the last show.
Speaker 2 (02:52:04):
We said which which game? Which which artists?
Speaker 11 (02:52:07):
Like?
Speaker 2 (02:52:07):
Defined it for you?
Speaker 11 (02:52:08):
It was, yeah, we did that. Do we want to
do that? Or do we want to do the super
Bowl thing?
Speaker 3 (02:52:13):
Not like, well we could do the super Bowl thing?
So why don't one of you guys bring up the
super Bowl thing? So all right?
Speaker 23 (02:52:20):
So so a couple of episodes ago, we all kind
of made our super Bowl predictions, and uh I came close.
I said, Buffalo and Philly. Uh man, Casey just was
shutting Josh Allen down, dude, and you know they made
a good they may have got Yeah, some of them
(02:52:41):
were pretty close, man. I mean, look, but the a
FC Championship game was great. NFC Championship game was over from.
Speaker 3 (02:52:50):
From the get go.
Speaker 23 (02:52:52):
I mean, Philly was purely more dominant than than Washington.
But uh yeah, so were making predicttions here.
Speaker 3 (02:53:00):
So let me see.
Speaker 12 (02:53:02):
So did anyone pick the actual uh final? I know
that I had one team, Kevin had one team.
Speaker 3 (02:53:08):
I had one in one.
Speaker 2 (02:53:09):
Yeah, anyone said Casey and Casey Casey against somebody in
Casey to win it?
Speaker 3 (02:53:15):
I thought, I said, Philly Casey, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
think Jase's all right, So Jay gat them both, right, Okay, nice, all.
Speaker 23 (02:53:22):
Right, So I'm gonna go h Casey is going to
win a super Bowl. They're going to get our first
ever three peat.
Speaker 3 (02:53:29):
And that says because he truly hates the.
Speaker 12 (02:53:34):
Because it's just three in a row.
Speaker 11 (02:53:36):
Well, they have said the script is out. I want
They have said the script is out.
Speaker 12 (02:53:41):
They claim that NFL definitely wants it. They said that
the Eagles are going to lead the entire game and
at one point over a two touchdown bleat, and that
at the end, Casey is going to come back and
Kelsey is going to get that last touchdown to put
them ahead.
Speaker 3 (02:53:57):
That is up there with Wade of opinion about Run
DMC's best album, Like, do you honestly think that this
is a script where like a guy like Jalen Hurts
goes by it, They like read it like as if
it's a movie and they have to.
Speaker 11 (02:54:14):
I would always say no.
Speaker 12 (02:54:16):
If someone told you that they could make an extra
half a billion dollars by getting a specific you know,
group to watch or increasing viewership or whatever it is, would.
Speaker 11 (02:54:29):
You want that?
Speaker 12 (02:54:31):
Look, I don't think it's possible, but in those close
call situations like the last game, where you know they
went on fourth down four.
Speaker 11 (02:54:39):
You know, they did a third down and a fourth
down with one yard to go, and they.
Speaker 12 (02:54:42):
Didn't make it both times, but they kind of did.
I think it could be skewed. I mean, your man
Pete Rose, you know, certainly put his time in. But
it could happen, but I don't think so. I just
I think it's funny.
Speaker 3 (02:54:55):
I agree there could be some WEFs that may be
a little shady, but I only the players now would
follow some script like it's the w w F where
they have.
Speaker 2 (02:55:07):
It's not that blatant. But listen, guys, it's really simple.
All you have to do is look in that stupid
ass suite to see what's going on here, all right,
And every one of us fucking hates it. And I
hate both of these teams with every bit of my being,
which is why I'm not watching the game, and I
know the Chiefs are gonna win.
Speaker 11 (02:55:27):
Not watching the game, what what what would you be
doing on that Sunday.
Speaker 2 (02:55:31):
Playing video games?
Speaker 23 (02:55:33):
If if Saquon rushes for more than one hundred and
twenty five yards, Philly's gonna win.
Speaker 2 (02:55:40):
Dude, Philly is so much better than this team.
Speaker 12 (02:55:43):
Gotta you gotta better than to shut down to beat Philly.
Speaker 2 (02:55:47):
But I will be shocked, all right.
Speaker 11 (02:55:50):
So we're all rooting for Phillip. We all are. We
all are going in.
Speaker 3 (02:55:55):
Root for a fucking root canal over Philly fucking winning
a super Bowl.
Speaker 12 (02:56:00):
Okay, it'll be the same thing as if the Giants
were in there. You're you know baseball terms the Mets.
Speaker 3 (02:56:05):
Well, you know we don't like those teams. If you
don't like that, if you don't have a dog in
a fight, I get it. But typically most people go
for a player they want to support. And that's kind
of like the way I look at it. So I
want to see it. So you want to see my
homes one again.
Speaker 12 (02:56:23):
I want to see a three P because it would
be the first time. I hate when dynasties happened. And
I have to tell you hurts and and.
Speaker 23 (02:56:30):
Says all love three three hot albums outcast, Yes are.
Speaker 12 (02:56:35):
But they're all different. They're all different. And here's the thing.
UH gave me the best Fantasy football year and I
own the complete support.
Speaker 11 (02:56:47):
No, it's that, that's it.
Speaker 12 (02:56:48):
It got me to the finals. They put major points up.
So I am definitely going with Philly. My wife is
a Jersey Philly border girl. So yeah, I'm supporting Philly.
I'm making like scuff mes and cook bags or something
like that.
Speaker 2 (02:57:04):
It's almost impossible to dislike Saquon Barkley. He's like Walter Payton.
Speaker 3 (02:57:08):
I was gonna say, like this story that he has,
it's almost have to get behind him and thinking about awesome, dude.
The guy was stuck in hell keV How long was
he a giant? Like five six years? Five six years
and running backs don't have a very long shelf flight.
Speaker 12 (02:57:25):
Well, he was out for like two straight years too true.
Speaker 3 (02:57:28):
But even still, he's an older guy. People didn't think
he would have the year he had this year, and
then you see what he's doing on a good team,
and you're right. He's He's so likable. He has such
a a this charisma about him. He's genuine and watching
him plays like fucking playing tech Mobile. You know he
does he does jump? Yeah, I mean he does. He's
(02:57:52):
like a video game player. So I don't know how
you don't get by something like that. Can I get it?
It's a little It's like his girlfriend moved on and
married some fucking rich guy. That's what Taekwon is like.
It was his girlfriend for six years, that she found
somebody and then well.
Speaker 6 (02:58:07):
That's more like, that's more about the Giants just being huge.
Speaker 7 (02:58:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (02:58:11):
Ever since Eli left and that wholeme just fuck up
team done. They they haven't been able to get back
on track.
Speaker 12 (02:58:18):
He watches Michael stray and every morning and the tear
comes to his side.
Speaker 3 (02:58:22):
I love keV. What's the Giants GM?
Speaker 7 (02:58:28):
Oh?
Speaker 55 (02:58:29):
Uh?
Speaker 23 (02:58:30):
She shean or something?
Speaker 3 (02:58:32):
Do you see where his son was?
Speaker 18 (02:58:33):
Like?
Speaker 3 (02:58:33):
He told him who Yeah, that was from the HBO.
Speaker 16 (02:58:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:58:36):
I didn't watch it because that was Giants fan and
danielm not the fucking father, No doubt. The son has
fucking balls.
Speaker 23 (02:58:44):
Dude, Your son can tell you the right rookie card
to buy right now and know better than you. Kids
no prospects because kids have time to, you know, dissect
the game.
Speaker 3 (02:58:57):
It's a good point. Maybe kids should be the GM
and not.
Speaker 12 (02:59:00):
Maybe let him know Tully a year to some asshole
who ruined the team.
Speaker 2 (02:59:05):
These fucking guys overthink it. They overthink it all the time.
Speaker 3 (02:59:09):
He traded a twenty five year old Luka Dancik to
the Lakers for fucking thirty one year old dude who's
on the back nine of his career.
Speaker 2 (02:59:18):
Not only that, but a guy never plays because he
breaks his pinky nail. Seven foot tall, two hundred and
eighty pounds breaks a pinky nail and he can't play.
Fuck that dude.
Speaker 70 (02:59:27):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (02:59:27):
Fuck the NBA. The whole league sucks balls. They're all
fucking pussies. Don't play the game, right. I hate that league.
I will never go to a game and watch a
game ever. They fuck that league.
Speaker 6 (02:59:39):
Oh America, are you Syria?
Speaker 7 (02:59:43):
It is showtime?
Speaker 3 (02:59:44):
Baby? Here we go where flat fat?
Speaker 29 (02:59:50):
It's awesome?
Speaker 3 (02:59:51):
Baby all right, folks.
Speaker 12 (02:59:56):
