Speaker 2 (00:05):
We've made it to Wednesday Toby and Chilly in the Morning,
ninety seven point one wash FM.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
I'm kidd o'she how are you wait? Are you wearing?

Speaker 4 (00:13):
Are you wearing a sweater?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
I am wearing a like a light sweater, Chili. I
have much heavier sweaters than this, But yes, I think
I may have rushed the sweater weather by about one day.

Speaker 5 (00:25):
What made you think I'm gonna wear a sweater today
when the high is gonna be in the mid seventies.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Mean, watching the news last night and the forecast was
like they started talking about like, hey, it's gonna be
cooler mornings starting Thursday and Friday. At the bus stop,
the kids are gonna need jackets. And I was like, oh,
that is forties and fifties to start the day.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
And I'm like, that's not until tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Well I know, but I thought they said it might
be a little cool tomorrow, but not, it's really not
gonna feel it till Thursday.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
I'm like, well, maybe it's cool enough for a sweater.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
It's not.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I'm sweating.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
No, it's sixty degrees right now outside in Rockville. But
what is the temperature for you where you go? Yup?
That temp means sweato weather. Is it forty something or
is it fifty something?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, fifty fifty eight, even fifty eight. I want to
sweater on. I loved it this morning, and then I
put a jacket on as well. I'm like doing everything
that I shouldn't be doing just yet. But by tomorrow
we're all going to be layering up.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Okay, just simmer down, a light jacket, light sweater, and kids.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Don't even wear a jacket when it's snow outside.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
That is true.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Oh my goodness.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Do you having a good morning?

Speaker 6 (01:34):
I am.

Speaker 5 (01:35):
I'm having a really good morning. I've had my coffee
today because there's no blood work, so I couldn't have
to fast. You couldn't have coffee yesterday.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
I'm good now, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Chili is working on top stories for all of us
coming up next.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
Well, in case you were not aware, the efforts to
avoid a partial government shutdown came up short, so federal employees,
a lot of them, are furloughed thousands.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
We've got all the details on the way.

Speaker 6 (02:00):
Top stories Top of the Out.

Speaker 5 (02:02):
Top Story is presented by Celsius Energy drinks well. Efforts
to avoid a partial government shutdown came up short after
Congress failed to approve a new spending bill, So starting today,
thousands of federal employees whose jobs do not protect life
or property will be told not to come into work. Meanwhile,

(02:22):
a DC OFFICIALI say that a lot of the daily
routines are not going to be disrupted, like schools, courts,
trash collection, the DMV metro all are going to stay open. However,
local businesses are preparing for a slowdown because thousands of
workers face furloughs until Congress eventually reaches a funding deal.
The White House launched a new government website where Americans

(02:45):
can buy certain medications at discounted prices. The President also
announced a deal with Pfizer aimed at lowering drug costs.
DC police say a dispute over the cost of food
led to a stabbing that left a delivery driver hospitalized.
Officers arrested thirty seven year old Travis Cole, who allegedly
pulled a knife during an argument on Wisconsin Avenue and

(03:07):
stabbed the victims several times. The driver's injuries are serious,
but not life threatening. Fairfax County's Library card design contests
ends at eight o'clock this morning. Now this is open
to all ages and the contest has categories for kids
and adults, with the winning designs featuring the Fairfax County

(03:28):
Public Library logo will appear on cards, key tags, and bookmarts,
and winners will each get five hundred dollars.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Those results are going to be announced by the end
of October.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
And the US tops the global list for unwanted scam
calls and messages, with the average American getting around one
hundred scam attempts a month, including nine calls, nine emails,
and seven texts every week. By comparison, Brits they get
about eighty four monthly scam messages. Forecast it a sunny

(04:00):
and breezy, beautiful fall day, seventy to the high right
now sixty in Capital Heights.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And those spam texts are bad too, All right, I'm
kiddo'she in for Toby coming up next to our morning mindset.
We do this every morning to kind of set you
in the right mood as you're head into work. Chile
has an inspirational quote for all of us. That's next,
plus more music as well here with wash FM little
Depeche Mode to get it started. Here together on a
Wednesday ninety seven point one wash FM with Toby and
Chilly in the morning, I'm kiddoshe it's.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Time now for our morning mindset.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
Christine Caine reminds us sometimes when you're in a dark place,
you think you've been buried, but you've actually been planted.
This is a reminder that really tough moments in life,
I know, can feel overwhelming, like being buried under pressure,
under pain or uncertainty, but they may actually be the
beginning of growth. Just like a seed needs to be

(04:51):
in the dark soil to grow, our toughest moments can
be the foundation for something new and better, even if
we can't see it in the moment. Yeah so, Christine
Kane says, sometimes when you're in a dark place, you
think you've been buried, but you've actually been planted. You
can find that quote or share your own. You can
find us on the Toby and Chili page at washfm

(05:12):
dot com.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
All right, thanks Chili.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Coming up next, we want to know what is the
most valuable thing you've lost. This is after I've lost
two important documents and really important documents. Oh yes, all
within the past month eight six six nine two seven
four three sixty one. Will take your calls and I'll
share what happened to me. Coming up next Toby and
Chilly in the morning, ninety seven point one wash FM.
I'm kidd o'she We want to know what is the

(05:35):
most valuable thing you've lost? After I've lost two important
documents in the past month.

Speaker 5 (05:41):
Eight six six nine two seven four three six one.
Let's see if we can make kid feel better.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Way, what is it? Well, so I lost my passport.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
I left that on an airplane about a month ago,
coming back from Toronto, because you clear customs in Toronto,
and I just walked right off the plane at DCA.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
And did you ever get that passport back? You have
to get a new one.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
I had to go get an emergency passport before another
work trip. By the way, the passport office downtown is
incredible and they did get me an emergency passport in
one day.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
It is possible, okay.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
And then this week I was traveling as well, and
I left my wallet on the plane and did not
realize it until two days later.

Speaker 5 (06:19):
Two days it took you two whole days to realize
you were without a wallet, well, Chili.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Everything is on my phone, my credit cards. I don't
really need my wallet except for my ID and then
to get into the building here.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
Okay, so so you located it, they are they sending
it to you or you have to give you license.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
This is overwhelming. I filed a report with American Airlines.
They called yesterday. They said, we have your wallet. I said,
you made my day. It was like a the universe
gave me one.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
You need air tags on everything in your life.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
I couldn't agree more. I can't be alone on this.
I think it was the universe saying you need to
slow down. Todd and Potomac, what have you lost?

Speaker 1 (06:55):
I lost my wedding rings, and I know it's in
the house somewhere, but I don't know.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
It's been almost a month now. I just really hope
my dog didn't eat it.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
Well, if your dog.

Speaker 5 (07:07):
Ate it, Todd, your dog also deposited it and it's
probably in the trash somewhere.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Seeing the difference here is Todd's wife is probably a
little upset with him losing his wing ring. Kyle just
looks at me. My partner is like, what is wrong
with you? He doesn't care that I lost my wallet.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Good luck, Todd.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
If you want to continue sharing with us, you can

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Thanks for starting your day with us as we start
to do with lots of music as well here on
ninety seven point one wash FM.

Speaker 6 (08:37):
Top Stories Top of the Hour.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
Congress failed to pass a new spending bill last night,
triggering a partial government shutdown that started just after midnight,
and as a result, tens of thousands of federal workers
are now furloughed, while essential services like Social Security, Medicare,
and air travel security will continue operating. President Trump and
Defense Secretary Pete hegseet they gathered hundreds of military leaders

(09:04):
in Quantico yesterday, where the President proposed using US cities
as training grounds, while Hegseeth criticized quote woke culture in
the armed forces and pushed for new fitness and leadership standards.
Montgomery County Police are seeking the public's help and locating
two men who are wanted for murder and kidnapping. The

(09:25):
investigation began back on September twenty first, after a twenty
nine year old man was found dead in a North
Bethesda apartment where a man and woman were also kidnapped.
One suspect is already in custody, but authorities are still
searching for eighteen year old Joshua Carter and twenty five
year old Justin Collins. Starting today, electric plug in hybrid

(09:47):
and low emission vehicles will lose their solo access to
HOV lanes. The federal a law that allowed them to
bypass occupancy requirements is expiring, and Congress chose not to
extend it, which marks a major shift in US transportation
policy and according to a recent survey, death and estate

(10:10):
planning are among the toughest family topics for Americans, with
twenty five percent finding them really hard to talk about.
Although sixty five percent have planned their funerals, two thirds
lack estate plans, often due to the myth that only
the wealthy need them. Forecast today, it's going to be lovely,

(10:31):
sonny and breezy. Highs around seventy two, right now sixty
in Fairfax.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
All right, thanks, Chilly, I'm kidd o'she coming up next?

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Would you pay someone to help you pick the perfect
baby name? You'll never believe how much couples are paying
one woman to help them. We'll share what she's charging
for and why this may become a growing trend. That's
next with Toby and Chilly.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
In the Morning.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Toby and Chilly in the Morning on ninety seven point
one Wash FM. I'm kidd O'Shea. How much would you
pay someone to help the perfect baby name for you?

Speaker 5 (11:02):
I know that can be really tough for parents to
come up with the name that their child is going
to have for the rest of their lives, but I
cannot believe that people are paying thousands of dollars to
help have a professional baby namer. There's a woman in
San Francisco named Taylor Humphrey, and she says she's helped
hundreds of couples and charges anywhere from two hundred dollars

(11:24):
to over ten thousand dollars.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Ten thousand dollars to help pick a baby's name.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Yeah, so here's the difference.

Speaker 5 (11:30):
Like, for two hundred bucks, you just get a personalized
list of name ideas with the meetings and some background information.
The VIP package, which costs over ten k. This includes
deep research into your family tree, your family history, and
she even has a team to brainstorm ideas for unique names.

(11:51):
She says most clients want something unique but not weird,
you know, stylish but not too trendy. Oh mean, come on,
even with disposable in come y, I still wouldn't pay
somebody that kind of money to come up with a
name for my giant.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
Give me one hundred bucks. The name's John. It'll be
just fine.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
I don't know if Yeah, what do you do if
you don't like the names that she generates?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Actually, I want my money back.

Speaker 6 (12:16):
Shelby and Chili's nearly impossible question.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Yeah, it's just a name, all right? What is today's question?

Speaker 5 (12:22):
These completely regenerate every seven to ten days. What are they?
Here is a clue? It is something on our body?

Speaker 3 (12:31):
All right? Interesting?

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Eight six six nine two seven four three six one
eight six six nine two seven four three six one
To answer the nearly impossible question for tickets to see
Gavin de Grau when he comes to the Lincoln Theater.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
What's that question again?

Speaker 5 (12:46):
These completely regenerate every seven to ten days on our body.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
What are they think about that?

Speaker 2 (12:54):
We'll have the answer to the nearly impossible question, plus
a bunch of music for your Wednesday drive in.

Speaker 6 (12:58):
Next Toby and Chili's nearly impossible question.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
And I'm kiddo, o'she today we're playing for tickets to
see Gavin de Grau at the Lincoln Theater.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
What is today's question? Chili?

Speaker 5 (13:09):
These completely regenerate every seven to ten days. It is
something on your body. What are we talking about? Eight
six six nine two seven four three six one.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Good morning in Burke, Victoria, how are you today?

Speaker 5 (13:23):
Good? Good?

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Thank you so much. Well, you've got the question. What
do you think we're talking about when you were talking
about taste buds?

Speaker 5 (13:33):
Oh, you think we regenerate our taste buds every seven
to ten days. Yeah, which is pretty interesting, is it? It
is very interesting of Victoria, and it is also.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
The correct answer.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Oh yeah, congratulations. I didn't know that either. We learned
something new this morning together.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
I think it's amazing. Maybe that's why we can taste
so many things so much.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Yeah, I agree, Victoria.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
You're going to see Gavin de Graw at the Lincoln
Theater on November twenty ninth.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
November twenty nine, fantashi, and.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
We'll have another pair of tickets again tomorrow morning, same time,
same place. Just like Victoria, you too could be a
big winner. Thanks for spending your morning with us, Victoria,
of course, all right, And with the partial government shutdown,
Chilli's going to update us on Top Stories coming up

To that show.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Ninety seven point one WASHFM, Washington and Iheartrate coming up
on Top Stories, Top of the Hour.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
A partial government shutdown is underway after the Senate did
not approve a funding proposal.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
So Chile's going to break down everything for us. There's
a lot going on this morning, Top Stories around the way.
We also have the music to start your day. We're
glad you're here. Sunny breezy seventy two. It's Toby and
Chili on ninety seven point one wash FM.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
Top stories top of the Our.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Partial government shutdown is underway after the Senate adjourned without
approving a funding proposal. The shutdown will see tens of
thousands of federal workers furloughed. Employees whose jobs do not
protect life or property will be told not to come
into work today. Meanwhile, DC officials say that most of
the daily routines not going to be disrupted, like schools, courts,

(15:49):
trash collection, the DMB and Metro all remaining open. The
wine House has launched a new government website where Americans
can buy certain medications at discounted prices. There also announced
a deal with Pfizer aimed at lowering drug costs. The
DC Council is holding a public carrying on a bill
that would add a ten cent deposit to most beverage containers,

(16:12):
aiming to boost recycling efforts. The plan includes reverse vending
machines to refund deposits, and it's supported as a way
to help clean up the Anacostia River, but critics argue
it could raise beverage prices. Amazon backed robotaxi company Zeukes
is getting ready to test itself driving vehicles here in DC.

(16:34):
That's going to be their first mid Atlantic location. Zekes
uses custom built cars with face to face seating and
dual side doors. Aim to launch passenger service in the
district next year.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
And according to.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
A recent survey, eighty two percent of Americans consider having
good neighbors just as important as where their home is
located and the price of the home, with nineteen percent
willing to pay ten thousand dollars or more extra to
avoid bad neighbors.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Respondents to find a good neighbor as someone.

Speaker 5 (17:09):
They can trust, quiet, keeps up their property, and respects privacy.
Forecasts for today sunny skies, breezy, seventy to the high
today right now sixty in Riverdale.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
And I'm kiddo Shae in for Toby coming up next.
How would you rate a good friend who used to
be a coworker you used to be a coworker with
if you were asked to be a reference for a
job they were applying for. Waiting to hear what happened
to me when I tried to help a friend out.
Chili thinks I should not have done this. We'll tell
you what's going on coming up next here on ninety
seven point one wash FM, We're so glad you're here

(17:42):
with us. On ninety seven point one wash FM, we
are Toby and Chilly in the morning.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
I'm kidd o' shay.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
So, how would you rate a former coworker or good
friend if you were asked to be a reference for
a job they were applying for?

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Very nice?

Speaker 3 (17:54):
I had this happen to me.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
My good friend Kelly was applying for a job, and
so the company was going to they actually send you
a link, they don't call you, and then you fill
out kind of like a survey, and that's how they
do their reference check.

Speaker 5 (18:08):
When you say survey, what exactly are you talking about?
Like how are you rating them?

Speaker 2 (18:12):
So it was on a scale of one to five,
and they asked you a bunch of questions like how
is this person when it comes to working with others?
How is this person when it comes to problem solving?
So typical questions like that. Okay, I think very highly
of Kelly. I think she is incredible. I think any
organization that would be, you know, willing to hire her
would be you know, would really be gain a great
person exactly. So I gave her all fives on this survey,

(18:35):
and I get to the end of the survey and
they're like, no, you can't rate her all fives.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
Really Okay, So the potential employer thinking there's no way
any one is that perfect. Yeah, either, you didn't actually
take time to consider these questions. Please think again and
go a little bit less than all five.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
And I was like, but I really truly believe that
she's that good of an employee, like you should hire
this person.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
So I had to go back and like change some
of them to fours. Oh, and then I felt bad.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
I'm like, she's gonna think I don't think she's a
good at being on time?

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Are you gonna tell her you tried?

Speaker 4 (19:13):
You tried to give her all five.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
I tried to give you all fives. They wouldn't let me.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Uh, but I thought that was really interesting that they
said absolutely not, she can't be all fives.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
Oh man, that's all right.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
What would you do for you?

Speaker 2 (19:25):
Probably would would you rate me if I asked for
a job reference?

Speaker 5 (19:29):
Hey, I would have to really think about each question
and be realistic, because I don't think anyone would believe
everybody you know is of all fives.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
There you're a little bit more realistic about it. All right,
Coming up next here we are going to talk about this.
If there's something you we want to know, if there's
something you do when you're driving that would surprise us,
we'll tell you why we're talking about it. Coming up
in a few minutes. But eight six six nine two
seven four three six one. There was a story that
Chili had in the news yesterday that kind of surprises
about what people are doing behind the wheels of their car.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
We'll talk about that next. Toby and Chilly in.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
The Morning, ninety seven point one Wash FM. I'm kiddo'she
is there something you do in your car that would
surprise us? Where's why we're talking about it.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
There's a survey of car owners and they say that
there's a generational difference in how people use their time
behind the wheel. So millennials apparently use their driving time
to plan their futures. Gen x ers this would be
you and I kid, We prefer to listen to music.
Gen Z drivers see their cars as calming spaces. Fifty
five percent just enjoy the silence, and twenty five percent

(20:31):
of gen Z take naps. I hope not while driving,
hopefully not. Yeah, but at some point in their cars
that's what they do.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
So they park it and they take a nap. So yeah,
using their cars an apartment. Maybe, what about Uchili?

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Do you?

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Is there anything that you do in the car that
would surprise us?

Speaker 5 (20:48):
I think I definitely listen to music, yeah, which of course.
But different thing that I do is when I am
home and I feel disregulated, like emotionally dysregulated, and my
husband and Sunner home, I'll go into the garage. I'll
get in the car, shut the door and just allow
to let out a big old scream to release all

(21:09):
that you know, pressure in the moment, and then I'm
like huh okay, yeah, and then i go back in
your little sanctuary there it is. I'm with you on
the music, you know.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
I like that.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
However, like when I was younger, I used to like
eat while driving, but that was just.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
I could eat a whole McDonald's meal while driving.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
Oh that sounds safe, Yeah, I mean drive with me.
Oh You're not alone in doing that, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
Eight six six ninety seven four three six one. I
have a feeling we're gonna get some calls, some people
that do some pretty interesting things while they're in their cars.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
They got we've got long commutes here in the DMV.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Yeah eight six six nine seven four three six one
to join the conversation. We'll get to your calls coming
up in just a little bit. But first, lots going
on in the news, and Chili's got an update on
Top Stories in just a few minutes. Here with Toby
and Chilly in the Morning on ninety seven point one

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
