Toby and Chili Mornings on Demand on ninety seven point
one WASH have that.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome to Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (00:06):
It's Toby and Chilly in the Morning on ninety seven
point one Wash FM. I'm Chili Amar back and joining
me is our new producer Crash Young.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hello, Crash, Hello, Chili, Welcome, Welcome.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
This is not the way I envisioned introducing you to
our listeners. We were hoping to do this when Toby returned,
and he is hopefully coming back this week from medical leave.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
But hello, Hello, how are you great? I love sitting
across from you.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
We've known each other for a little while because you
worked down the hall at one of our sister stations,
but this is the first time you've officially spoken on Wash.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (00:41):
I think so.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah, the microphones say, I know. So do you have kids?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
I do?

Speaker 6 (00:48):
I do?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
How old are they?

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Nine?

Speaker 5 (00:49):
And three?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Okay?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
So, first day of school in Fairfax County and a
lot of other school districts was yesterday, which is why
I was off because I always take the first day
of school off. My son started sixth grade, which where
I live is his final year of elementary school. And
let me tell you, I am so happy to be
back into the school routine. How do you feel about
the kids returning to school.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
In the same way, So they haven't started back yet,
they start Monday in DC. Yes, I need the routine back.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, because do they do like summer camp and stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Or now do the nine year old does camp? The
three year old was in daycare and was there and
will be until.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Monday, and that's when he starts pree K four.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Well, I hope that way, K three, when your nine
year old returns to school next week, that there is
less drama than our first day of school in our household,
because within two hours of my son returning, we got
a call from the school, which I will share more
maybe around five point forty this morning, but anyway, it's
all good and coming up in just a few minutes,
we're going to get you up to speed on all

(01:54):
the news headlines with Toby and Chili's top stories, including
this second game of pre season for the Washington Commanders.
Was it a w or an l You'll find out
in just a.

Speaker 7 (02:07):
Few top stories.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Top of the Hour, Top Stories presented by Celsius Energy Drinks,
President Trump, and US European All I say they're cautiously
optimistic about reaching a deal to end the Ukraine Russia War.
After hosting Ukraine's President Zelenski, European leaders, and NATO's chief
at the White House, Trump said his talks were productive
and that any agreement would likely include US security guarantees

(02:34):
for Ukraine. Republican led state sending more National Guard troops
to the district, governors of Ohio and South Carolina sending
a combined three hundred and fifty soldiers to DC to
help out with federal law enforcement. This all comes after
West Virginia's governor announced that he was sending hundreds of
troops to DC as well. A cargo ship caught fire
and actually exploded in Baltimore Harbord's near the remains of

(02:57):
the Francis Scott Key Bridge last night. That blaze was
quickly contained and thankfully, no injuries were reported. A twenty
seven year old Arlington man has been charged with first
degree murder after allegedly shooting his mother inside his Virginia
Square apartment Sunday morning. Police say they found the fifty
seven year old woman with a gunshot wound to the head.

(03:18):
The commanders fell to the Cincinnati Bengals thirty one to
seventeen last night. It was their second preseason game. They
played it at home. Quarterback Jaden Daniels started and played
just one series, but he.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Did score a fourteen yard touchdown run.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
The Cambridge Dictionary is adding over six thousand new entries
this year, including skippity. That's a nonsensical term that's coined
by a YouTuber. It's among the new slang terms that's
being incorporated. Other planned additions include tradwife, which is referring
to a stayed home traditional wife, and de lulu, which

(03:56):
means delusional. Forecasts for today mostly highs only around seventy
two right now, it's sixty six in Bethesda coming up next.
As we always do every morning, we're going to try
to get you into a better morning mindset with a quote.
As Toby and Chilly in the Morning continues on ninety
seven point one wash FM, it's Toby and Chilly in

(04:19):
the Morning on ninety seven point one wash FM. I'm Chilliyamar.
Toby is still out, but we do want to get
you into a better morning mindset on this Tuesday, and
I want to share this quote by B. F. Skinner,
which I think is appropriate as all our kids start
to head back to school. Education is what survives when

(04:40):
what has been learned has been forgotten. Well, this quote
highlights the idea that true education goes beyond what you memorize,
the facts or any details. Even when specific lessons, dates,
or formulas are forgotten, the deeper skills, ways of thinking
and understanding developed through learning remain so Again, B. F.

(05:04):
Skinner says, education is what survives when what has been
learned has been forgotten. And you can find that quote
if you like, on the Toby and Chili page at
washfm dot com. Now, speaking of education and going back
to school, my son's first day of sixth grade was
yesterday and I got a call from the school less
than two hours after he started.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Don't you love it when that happens? Parents.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
I'm gonna tell you what led to such a rough start.
As Toby and Chilly in the Morning continues on ninety
seven point one wash FM, I think it's safe to
say no parent wants to see the schools caller ID
on their phone, especially on the first day of school.
It's Toby and Chilly in the Morning on ninety seven
point one WASHFM. I'm Chilli, Omar Toby is out, but

(05:50):
our producer Crash Young Hello, he's here with me and
Crash I want to ask you. I know you said
you have a three year old and nine year old boys.
You received calls from school in their entire school career?

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Oh god, yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Now in my world, my sixth grader he has ADHD,
so oftentimes the calls are related to behavior, not that
he's hurt.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
So I'm like, oh my god, what did he do? Now?

Speaker 8 (06:16):
Right?

Speaker 3 (06:17):
And yesterday, a whole two hours into the new school year,
very first.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Day is first day. Yes, the phone rings and.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
I say hi, and they're like, hi, miss Chile. Everything's fine.
I go, I know, everything's fine with him. He doesn't
usually get hurt.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
I'm very thankful, but what happened?

Speaker 3 (06:39):
So, because he has ADHD, in order to set him
up for success, we really have to go over what
routine he's.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Going to have for the day and the schedule they.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Gave us to prepare him for the first day of
school changed. They decided that he was going to do
social studies before or he was gonna do it. Whatever
it was they switched on him was a no no
because it triggered him. He felt all out of whack.
You know, it was overwhelming, and so he had a
meltdown because of it. And I'm listening going right, So

(07:15):
you didn't think to tell us that you were gonna
make this change before.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
You did it. You kind of caused this yourself.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I mean, in fairness, I think I would have had
a meltdown too.

Speaker 7 (07:27):
That's true.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Imagine today you can't be switching things up on us.
But anyway, he was able to recover, and that's what's important,
and he ended up ending his first day on a
positive note.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
That's good exactly.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Coming up next, we're gonna get you up to speed
on all the news headlines with Toby and Chile's Top

Speaker 3 (08:13):
More Republican led states are deploying National Guard troops to DC.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
We've got that story.

More coming up with Toby and Chile in the morning

Speaker 7 (08:26):
Top Stories Top of the Hour.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelinski says there's no date yet for
any meeting with Russian President Putin. Speaking with reporters outside
the Whinehouse yesterday, he said he had a productive meeting
with President Trump and other European leaders. President Trump says
he wants mail in ballots gone before next year's mid
terms while he continues to push for election changes. Efforts

(08:51):
to overhaul federal voting rules have faced legal obstacles since
the federal anti crime cracked down a DC star in
August seventh, more than three hundred and eighty people have
been arrested, and over forty percent of them are undocumented immigrants.
DC Mayor Bowser is now urging the Trump administration to
clarify whether the heightened federal presence is really aimed at

(09:15):
fighting crime or enforcing immigration rules. Meanwhile, Ohio, South Carolina, Mississippi,
and West Virginia are all sending more National Guard troops
to the district to assist federal law enforcement. Open Table
data shows that DC restaurant reservations have dropped sixteen percent

(09:35):
since the federal law enforcement surge began, and fell over
thirty percent once National Guard troops started to arrive. So
now business owners in DC are hoping that the summer
restaurant week will bring some of those diners back. Flights
into and out of Reagan National Airport were stopped yesterday
morning after a fire alarm sounded in the control room,

(09:58):
although no fire was found. Operations then resumed around noon,
and according to a recent study, American renters apparently staying
in their homes an average of four years, with more
than a quarter of them living in the same place
for seven years or longer. Forecasts for today much cooler
than it usually is this time of year, mostly cloudy today,

(10:21):
highs around seventy two right now sixty six in Fairfax coming.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Up in just a few minutes.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Have you ever wondered what people want revealed after they die, Well,
there's a man who actually gets.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Paid to spill the secrets at funerals.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
I'll share more about the so called Coffin Confessor in
just a little bit, as Toby and Chilly in the
Morning continues on ninety seven point one, Wash FM. Imagine
getting paid sixty seven hundred dollars to spill someone else's secrets.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
It's Toby and Chilly in the.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Morning on ninety seven point one WASHFM. I'm Chilliyamar. Toby
Nap is still out, but I'm joined by our new producer,
Crash Young Hello and welcome.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
Hello there.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
So there's a guy in Australia who's a so called
coffin confessor. For sixty seven hundred dollars, he will confess
all your dying thoughts at your own funeral. So somebody
hires him before they die, tells him what he wants
to share at the funeral, and he stands up in
front of all the loved ones and divulges whatever the

(11:27):
person who died wants to say. It could be beautiful
final thoughts about life, about each individual in there, giving
them the closure they really needed.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Or Crash, it could be something very tawdry.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
It could hurt scandalous. You see, I had an affair
and y're not my son. I mean, it could be anything.
It could be anything. It could be some serious drama.
Would you consider being the messenger in that case?

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Knowing that it could break hearts and have people wailing
in front of you.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
Absolutely absolutely, You're.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Like, I gotta pay the bills. I gotta do what
you gotta sixty seven hundred bucks. Exactly. I'm with you.
I'd be like, I'm sure, why not.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
And here's what I will say about the psychology of this. Right, So,
the person who's dying could easily have put this on paper.
They could have written this, they could have dictated it.
They could and have people read it just on their own. No, no, no,
they wanted the dramatic impact in front of everybody. It's
their one last stick it to them before they go

(12:32):
to the other side.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
Passive.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
That's exactly. I never loved you, Chili.

Speaker 7 (12:38):
Shelby and Chili's nearly impossible question.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Today's question.

Speaker 3 (12:43):

Speaker 2 (13:51):
How are you? We're doing well.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
We're trying to make you a little bit better. You've
got the question, what do you think? The answer might
be talk on the phone?

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Now? Do you like?

Speaker 3 (14:00):
You're on your cell phone a little over three hours
every single day.

Speaker 7 (14:04):
Sometimes depends on you know, I'm talking to and you.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
Know, talking could be I guess in text. It doesn't
have to be actually speaking to somebody.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Very true. That is an excellent guest, Jesse. It's also correct.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Congratulations, Thank you, You're very welcome. You're going to go
check out the Commanders and Ravens at Northwest Stadium for
their preseason game on August twenty third courtesy of Washington
Area Honda Dealers Association.

Speaker 2 (14:34):

Started and played just one series.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
But he did score one hundred or one hundred hello,
a fourteen yard touchdown run. And according to a recent study,
Hana Lulu, Hawaii has the most expensive grocery store prices
in the entire country. San Francisco came in second, followed
by New York and DC. Yup cracked the top ten,

(17:28):
coming in seventh as the most expensive state or city

Speaker 3 (17:54):
Fewer than one in four young Americans are apparently reaching
all the classic miles stones of adulthood, and the reason
might surprise you. We're going to share what those milestones are.
As Toby and Chilly in the Morning continues on ninety
seven point one wash FM. It seems more and more
of us are skipping adulthood, or at least waiting until

(18:16):
we're much older. It's Toby and Chilly in the Morning
on ninety seven point one wash FM.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
I'm Chiliamar.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Toby Nap is out, but our new producer, Crash Young
is here with me today. So crash It says that
fewer young Americans are reaching major adulting milestones. So as
I'm getting to know you better, I don't know the
answer to this, but back in nineteen seventy five, nearly
half of all Americans between the age of twenty five
and thirty four had done these things. Okay, they had

(18:45):
lived away from their parents, they had gotten a job,
they had gotten married, and they at least had one
child between twenty five and thirty four. Of those milestones,
how many did you achieve between twenty five and.

Speaker 5 (18:59):
Thirty four three out of four?

Speaker 2 (19:01):
So which one did you not do between those ages?

Speaker 5 (19:04):
Child?

Speaker 2 (19:05):
And how old were you when you had kids.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Forty three and fifty?

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Okay, now, if you could do it again, would you
want to be younger or are you cool with the
age you were when you had these kids?

Speaker 5 (19:19):
No, I like it better now, Okay, much better.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
See I achieved two of these.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
I had lived away from my parents by the time
I was thirty four, I had gotten a job, I
didn't get married till I was thirty nine, and I
my one only child I have I had at forty one.
And if I were to change any of those, I
don't mind that I got married later, but the fact
that I had a kid later matters, because well, I'm

(19:45):
not gonna be able to retire because college is a thing.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
Where's that?

Speaker 2 (19:49):
And we're gonna be still in our sixties when he
gets to college.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
And I can't relate to any of my friends whose
kids are graduating from college. My mine is just starting
sixth grade. So for that reason, m wouldn't have been
so bad to be younger. But if you want to
read more about this, we will have it up for
you on the Toby and Chili page at washfm dot com.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Now coming up in just a few minutes.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
It is Tuesday, so we'll get to hear another one
of your crazy first date stories.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Jennifer in oaked In had.

to the rescue. You'll find out what happened in just
a few as Toby and Chilly in the Morning continues
on ninety seven point one wash FM. It's Toby and
Chili's crazy first Date from Oaked In Jennifer, what's your story?

Speaker 8 (20:40):
So I had a first date where I was getting
dinner with somebody and it was winter, so I was
wearing a heavy winter coat and I got stuck inside
the coat because the zipper broke. So I was very
awkwardly sitting across in the person trying to get the
zipper on John for a gook fifteen minutes and I
finally asked like, hey, I'm in trouble with that, and
then they had to come over and helped get me

(21:00):
under throw the coat. They couldn't get me out, and
then the waiter saw that we were struggling and he
came over and it turned out he had an uncle
that worked in a zipper factory. He actually had a
good six to get me out of the coat.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
What did this waiter or server do to help you
finally remove it?

Speaker 8 (21:15):
He brought over like a safety pin and like we
was just smangled it in the zipper class to get
it to slat out.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
How did the rest of the date or the conversation
go with this guy? The rest of the.

Speaker 8 (21:25):
Day went well. We actually continued to go see each
other for a while, so I did not turn him
off that I am more clothing that I could.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
Not get out of.

Speaker 7 (21:33):
Oh, so what you're saying is he managed to get
you out of that coat that you.

Speaker 5 (21:36):
Got stuck in earlier in the night, and then things.

Speaker 2 (21:39):
Just became fruitful.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
Yeah, we'll go with that.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
So are you married to this guy now or no?

Speaker 8 (21:43):
No, I ended up marrying another guy who helped me
get out of other coats in different ways.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
Thanks for sharing that story with us, Jennifer. And if
you've got a crazy first date story you'd like to share,

sixth grade. It says last year in elementary school, and
you may have heard me talk about how my son
is neurodivergent. He has ADHD and he's also on the
autism spectrum. And many years ago I heard a poem

(25:36):
by Victor Bueno called I Trust You'll treat Her well,
And it's a pretty popular poem that I encourage you
to look up about a little girl's first day of
school and kind of going through different milestones, and I
thought I would rewrite it for parents of neurodivergent kids.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
So here it goes, Dear world, Today.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
I'm placing in your one extraordinary little boy with eyes
that see the world in his own brilliant way, a
heart that feels deeply and a mind that dances to
rhythms most don't hear. He may not always speak the
way others do, but his voice, in whatever form it takes, matters.
His thoughts are vivid and vast, and his joy when

(26:21):
it comes is pure magic.

Speaker 2 (26:24):
I trust you'll treat him well.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
This morning, he's stepping out from the familiar world we've
built together, a world shape by routine, comfort, safety and love,
And he's walking toward his first day of school. God
will be the days when I could shield him from
loud noises, from too many faces, from the pressures to
fit in. He may be overwhelmed by the lights or

(26:47):
the sounds. He may need breaks, space, quiet, or someone
to sit beside him. He may not run to join
the crowd, but that doesn't mean he doesn't want connection.
It just means he connects differently. He might not laugh
at the same jokes or play the same games, but
he has his own kind of humor, his own kind

(27:08):
of genius, and his own kind of magic. Today he
begins learning how to be in a world that wasn't
quite built.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
With him in mind.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
And still somehow he will try to make space for
himself in it so world, I ask you please be
patient when he struggles to explain what he feels. Please
be kind when he steps away from the group, not
because he doesn't care, but because it's all just a
bit too much. Please listen when he speaks, even if

(27:38):
his thoughts are scattered, and please see him for his strengths,
his wonder and his courage. So today, world, I give
you one brave little boy, full of stories, curiosity and surprises.
I trust you'll treat him well. We want to send
you to go see John Legend when he comes to

(27:59):

in a one hundred dollars gift card to Ovations for dinner.

Skinner said, education is what survives when what has been
learned has been forgotten. Pretty much emphasizes that the lasting
value of learning lies in the habits of mind and
perspective that it instills. So hopefully you learn something new
about yourself today.
