Ten Takes is a production of the NFL in partnership
with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Listen. I'm supposed to push back and be a Cowboys curmudgeon,
and I'm not.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
I will ask, how about them Cowboys?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
I'm impressed? Dare I say, I'm surprised.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
I've been screaming and begging for them to just wake
up and make a bold move.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
You know that meme where.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
There's like a stick figure and he's got a little
stick and he's just poking. Somebody's like, come on, do something.
That's been us poking. The Cowboys logo as Howie Roseman
rules the world and the Commanders have next and the
Giants are reloading Cowboys underwhelming head coach hire free agency draft,
and now this is the Lightning Bolts, and I have
no pushback. They needed talent at wide receiver. They got

(01:01):
talent and wide receiver. And I think this is incredible
because if you look at CD and Pickens, it's like
they who did they get CD to be his number two?
They got CD? They got himself. Look at the measurables.
I know there's a lot more complicated nuance in these players.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Six two six three two hundred two hundred four five
four four seven, literally the exact same vertical jump and
pretty much exactly the same arm length physically. It is
carbon copies. It's Pam saying they're the same picture. These
guys are on either side of Dak maybe the same side.
They are out there physically imposing, making a threat to

(01:37):
the Eagles, to the Commanders. They have a number two receiver,
and more importantly, they have a pulse. They're doing something
I've been screaming at the Jones family.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Engage here, get in the fight. Don't just run the
same nonsense back they didn't. I've called them the most
boring team in the NFC East. They just acquired maybe
the least boring player in the league. For all of
his faults, and we'll get into them, because I don't
think this is necessary, a doomsday horrible thing for the Steelers,
but it is a sign of life for the Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
It was going. Now the needles are jumping. I'm impressed.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
I'm a little excited, and they are far more interesting
and far more dynamic. George Pickens is not always a
parade and a picnic guys, and there will be a
lot of attention on him but he's incredibly talented. They
need it, they got it, and the fact that they
did something makes me get high five to the Jones family.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Thank you. Is George Pigot's prepared to be a true
number two?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Well, listen, I think he would have been if he
stayed in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Behind DK, and he would have had a lesser quarterback
going to him.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
George Pickson is about to have an excellent quarterback Like
that to me is the end of the conversation. Dak
Prescott will get him the ball. He'll be open a
lot because of CD. I don't think with Pickens it's
an issue of I'm the number one. I think it's
often an issue of I want the ball. He's going
to get the ball. Like this is a very very
comfortable situation.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
We can go way back in the.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
History of Dallas Cowboys ute unquote number two receivers to
Alvin Harper and Michael Irvin, all of those guys. George
Pickens is it feels like a cowboy.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
It feels like a fit. Of course, he's mercurial.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
And listen, I put up that side by side of
the two of them and CD, and I said, look,
they're the same player, and a very common response on
Twitter is yeah, physically, except one of those two players
is insane.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
All right, I get it. Pickens is a little different.
I'm not calling him insane, but there is this.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
I mean, we can't just say, ah, he'll just slide
in there and he'll get his eighty five catches and
he'll hide five CD every time he gets the ball.
I think that George Pickens is in the best quarterback
situation of his career, maybe the best offensive situation of
his career. In a true passing game. The cowboy not
going to do that great running the ball. They're chucking
this thing. So all this stuff, I think it's like

(03:50):
if you were looking to give him a cookie.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
I think he got a cookie.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
And by the way, I think this is all of
the reasons the Pittsburgh Steelers did not want to give
him the biggest cookie of all, which.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Is a contract extension.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
My question always with the Cowboys every single year, is
this year different. It's the same team, it's the same product,
it's the same quarterback, it's the same coach. Well, it's
not the same coach, And like, this is a very
dynamic change to the offense and maybe it'll blow up
in their face.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Maybe it'll go terribly.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
But I'm choosing to think positive right now. That for
the question why is this team different, This team's a
lot different with that player. That player, for all his
faults and talents, is going to change things. I think
for the positive. But in terms of starting the season
and wins, like, they have.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
To be Philadelphia. They have to compete with Philadelphia.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
They can't just sit back and be like I guess
this is the Eagles dynasty era because Roseman is a
better GM than us and they have better players.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
That's nonsense.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
The Cowboys aren't supposed to do filler seasons, are not
supposed to be happy with this, and that they're supposed
to win. So this is a move that says like, no,
we're fighting back. I'm almost inspired by them because I was.
I had let them go, and I just thought it
was like, all right, Commanders, Eagles, and we'll see it
from the Giants. The Cowboys made a chess move here,
and I.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Just I'm impressed. I'm almost proud of the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
I'm fired up trying to sympathize with these with these
young guys, because there is a problem becoming a problem
in the NFL, where you have teams like the Giants
or the Bears.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Who are over one hundred years old.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
You've had a lot of great players guys, there's only
so many numbers, like there's only single.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Zero to ninety nine. That's it.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
You got to have fifty three guys at least, and
then these other ones.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
So they're running out of options. And listen, I'm.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Trying to be solutions oriented for Abduel Carter because for
a guy who's supposedly unblockable, all these giants greats are
just blocking them left and.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Right from their pancaking.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Lawrence Taylor says no. Phil simm says no. So he's like,
all right, I can't get eleven. How about we'll go
now one to ten. Nope, that's Eli's number.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Can't have that.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
All right, I'll go to a conventional pass rusher number ninety.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Two that's straight hand. Can't have that.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I feel bad for him because also listen, Abdul Carter,
he's aware of Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence Taylor has been retired
for over thirty years. Even if he did the studying
and went to YouTube, I don't think someone his age
could really appreciate someone like Lawrence Taylor. I can't genuinely
appreciate Larry Zanko or John Riggins. As much as I

(06:08):
may love them, it's not the same as having been
alive and seen them when they played.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
So I do have a solution.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
And I went and I looked at the Giants retired numbers,
and then I went and looked at the Giants numerical roster,
and I have an idea. So he decided abdul Carter.
He says he woned fifty six. Yes, he wanted eleven. No,
so he wanted this right.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
So fifty six and.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Eleven were both gone. But watch, I'm gonna do a
magic trick right here, Go with this.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Go with fifty one. I like it.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Fifty one is available on the Giants roster right now.
Fifty one is not retired by the New York Giants.
It's half of LT, it's half of SIMS. It's a
classic linebacker number, Buck Kiss, Brian Cox at al.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
There is exactly James Ferrier.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Fifty one is a classic linebacker slash edge number.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
It's available, it's free.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
And by the way, you're not going to go with
like eight or something like New fangle. The Giants fans
will respect that it's an old fashion number and they
they will resonate with them.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
And I think he will make it your own. So
I suggest Abdul Carter go with fifty one.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
It's sitting there. It's half eleven half fifty six. Think
it works for you. I really admire the take from Harbaugh.
It's just as usual for him. It's original, it's a
little out there, but it actually comes back to really
solid football. And justin Herbert has the talent, he has
the coach, and harbust saying, look, here's the deal. We're
a handful of years in with Herbert, we're going to
get into the Hall of Fame. It's very simple. You

(07:32):
have to win a Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
That's it. Just study the history of Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
All of the ones in the modern era save a
couple exceptions, the Manny ands Eli who will get in,
and Brady and Breeze and Rogers, like, there's really one
exception and it's Warren Moon. But his case is very
unique because he was winning championships in Canada before he
was even playing in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
You have to win the Super Bowl, you justin.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Herbert whenever he retires, is going to have big numbers
and big highlights.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Is he going to win in the playoffs?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
And again, winning in the playoffs is not enough, and
look at your own organization.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Look at Philip Rivers.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Philip Rivers had massive stats, he has one playoff games.
I do not think he will be in the Hall
of Fame because he's never appeared in the Super Bowl.
With quarterbacks, it is not wide receiver, tight end or
pass rusher. Show me your ring if you want to
get into Canton. So Harbaugh even said it in the
clip himself, He's like, he set a couple super bowls.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
One will do it.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
That's where we're at. You have to win a super Bowl.
And listen, where are we at with Justin Herbert? So
Jamie mentioned he has this amazing prolific year in which
he doesn't throw interceptions. We show up in the playoffs,
we throw four interceptions in one game. That's where we're
at with Herbert right now. His reputation that he has earned, talented,
good statistically everything, but we have not seen it in January,

(08:43):
let alone February. So what Arba's saying is I want
him to go to the promised lands of football heaven
and we got a ton of work to do.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
And he's right.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
I have some different ones, guys. Number three, I had
Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield was fantastic last year. He put
up massive numbers, huge stats, huge touchdown total for a
team that wins. He found his home in Tampa and
is excellent. I think Baker in the NFC is top three.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
I have heard so two. The numbers aren't really there,
like they're not.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
And you know that there was times last year where
the passing game was not the thing because it was
Saque left and Saque right. But I really was incredibly
blown away by his performance in the Super Bowl. Is
also when everybody doubts him. I put him there, out
of there, and then listen, I had number one. Joe
Burrow led the NFL in passing last year. Do you
know who was number two? It was Jared Goff. It
was Jared Goff who runs that steam engine in Detroit,

(09:32):
and they did not.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Win the Super Bowl. They did not get to the
Super Bowl. He was fantastic this last year.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
And I think he left the bad taste in everybody's
mouth with the way this season ended. Look up the numbers,
look up the leadership, look up the efficiency. If you're
looking for a quarterback in the NFC, you want to
look at the AFC. But if you can't look at
the AFC, these are my top three, and I stand
behind Kyle. I'm going to push back on that logic
because if you're going to put Golf as your number
one quarterback and he's the locomotive for that team and

(09:59):
that's why they win, why wouldn't you have Hurts anywhere on.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Your lists like that?

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Have Jalen Hurds is a qualifier or is he?

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Oh? I'm sorry, I'm sorry they get confusing. I know, Jamie.
I got Hurts right there at too. What I met
was jayde and Daniels.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Jamie predetermined her receiver before I even went. She thought
I wasn't going to have Hurts on Jamie. I am
actually hurt. Yes, I got him right there at two.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Okay, what about Jane Daniels.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
That's why I meant it so the name that was
meant to come out.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Of my mouth Jane Daniels. Yeah, it's one year. It
was an amazing year. We've seen some guys. Listen last year,
if you were going to put C. J.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Stroud as your top AFC three quarterback, you wouldn't be
doing it. It just it's a little bit of time served.
And nobody likes Jane Daniels more than me. I love them,
But like top three is rare, do it again next year.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Maybe you'll be number one next year.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
I think it's way more interesting for the Pittsburgh Steelers
because leads us to the question of where are you headed?
What is the plan? Where are we going to end
up Week one in September? Because you guys know how
I feel about this. Wherever you're headed, I'm in. I'm
always in on the Steelers. I will never abandon them.
They don't do fillers, they don't do six and eleven seasons.

(11:07):
They will find a way to ten and seven or
nine and eight. You know it, and I know it.
I don't care who they get rid of. And yet
I still don't know what the hell the plan is.
If the plan is for Rogers, then you just severed
a huge piece of talent with which to carry a
forty one year old quarterback is going to need it.
If the plan's not for Rogers, and it's some holy crap,

(11:28):
we're actually going with Mason Rudolph thing, which I know
there are some Steelers fans who say, screw it, let's
do it. Then you need as much talent to carry him.
So I don't know what the plan is with quarterbacks still,
just like you do. And just when you think couldn't
get weirder that the Steelers don't have a quarterback, they
get rid of one of their best receivers.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
However, I set them in. I'm still in, and I'm in.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Because I respect their conviction in saying we don't want
a future with this player. And we've been around the
block a few times. Anyone who's confused or chagrined that
they let go of George Pickens, I would ask you
the question during the Mike Tomlin era.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Can you think of.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
A couple of guys, especially at wide received that they
have let go or moved on from, who have gone
on to do tremendous things in their next stop.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
I can't. I can think of the other guys.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
I can think of Chase Claypool, Deontae Johnson, and certainly
Antonio Brown, who eventually, with all those cases, the Steelers said,
I think that's enough. They move on, and it's not
like they make the Steelers look terrible for moving on
with them, about how could you let go of this player?
The Steelers have a good sense of who that player
is and are they a future Steeler. They're showing their

(12:34):
hand right now that a guy that they drafted and
were in position to pay this year if they wanted
to know, we are out.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
So since we're out, what the hell, Let's hook.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Somebody who doesn't know this guy like we do, and
let's get some value. Let's get some draft picks. Let's
do all of that now. Don't tell me that they're
planning for the future. There is no future with the
Pittsburgh Steelers. It's always about the now. So this is
not a filler season in twenty twenty five that they're
gonna have draft picks next year. Blah blah blah. They
got to get those nine or ten wins this year,
as they.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Will curious as to how they're gonna do it. But
I want it very clear.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
When the playoff picking time comes down in September, I
will pick the Steelers. I don't care if George Pickens
isn't on the team anymore. They'll figure it out just
right now. On May seventh, I have not no idea how.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
The Ravens are.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Just this team where I look at them going into
twenty twenty five and I'd say, just get me to
the playoffs. Fast forward the season. I know you're gonna
be good. I know you're gonna win a bunch of games.
You're gonna have a bunch of highlights.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Just fast forward to the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
It's they feel to me like the Cowboys used to feel,
where it's just it's you know they're gonna get there.
You know they're gonna win double digit games. It's just
about that one or maybe two games in January. Where
does Lamar play his best game? Will he was just
talking about. I don't think Lamar chokes in the playoffs.
I don't think he falls on his face. I think
he doesn't show up with his a game. I think
he plays fine. He doesn't blow people away like he

(13:52):
does in the regular season. He doesn't play his best
in the playoff games. And if that's a reason to
draw swords for Ravens fans, then you're not watching as
closely as you should be.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
He didn't play his best game and by the way, needed.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
The defense against Buffalo. They show up, they sacked Josh
Allen one time.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
They had no takeaways. It's like it just goes away.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
So mal Guy starks, great looking player, he feels like
a raven. I've seen him before, We'll see him again.
They're the fast forward team to me, and I mean
that with due respect. They're such an institution and so
solid that even in that division, I know they're gonna
be there in the end. But you just have to
tell me the story ends differently this time, and it'll
be way more interesting.
