Speaker 1 (00:05):
And Huddle is a production of the NFL in partnership
with iHeartRadio and let's.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Go pick that. Can't you Pickett? Look at it?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
He's a mighty on the way long day. Here we go, Stealer,
Here we go, Oh, gostad love the go.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Here we go.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
In Spanish, we are enjoyed by a legend. He spent
eleven years in the NFL. He was let's just call
it a multitasker. Yes he could run the ball, Yes
he could catch the ball. Oh when he could throw
the ball. And he was nicknamed Slash. Let's give a
warm l huddle. Welcome to Cordel Stewart. What's up, Cordell?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
What's going on, guys? I'm doing well. There's a great introduction.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
I like that.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yes, we do great having you on. We heard that
call of how it's sounded. You actually were down in
Mexico for a watch party with a lot of Escero's finaticos.
That's how they call it in Spanish. The Steelers fans
they represent everywhere and they are global, and you were

(01:20):
in Mexico. What was that experience like with all those
Steelers fans there south of the border.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Unbelievable guys. Honestly, the support has been tremendous for many years.
I remember dating back to two thousand when we had
to go there in Mexico City to play against Anapois
coach in the preseason game, and I think one of
the fans actually told me while being there past few
days ago it was up to ninety thousand people there
in the stadium attending the game, and I'm like, ninety thousand.

(01:53):
I know we get fifty five to movie mid sixties,
but to imagine ninety thousand people at a game supporting
a team is unheard of. But the support system we
had there at the arena where we were, I think
it was like thirty four hundred tickets were so sold.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Everyone was in there having fun, and it was just.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Great to see still a nation outside of the US,
but yet they're in Mexico having an outstanding time the
same way we do here. So we're everywhere and they
did an outsteading job of showing their support and love
and we enjoyed it too as well.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
We actually have a little clip of what it was
like at that watch party.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Are you kidding?

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Wow?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Unbelievable Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
So waiting a terrible towel.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
If you showed somebody that clip with no contact, they
would for sure think those folks traveled to Las Vegas
to watch the game in houses the terrible towels travel.
It's very convenient, very convenient propuct. I think that was
a genius marketing by the Steelers for sure, to.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Have that from the get go.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
But you're right everywhere that Steelers fans go, We've seen
them here right across the stadium.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
In Las Vegas. I mean, it's no joke.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
So we heard a little about that, we saw a
little bit of it there, you got to feel it.
I think when you have a franchise as storied as
the Steelers, right, and we talked about here like where
are the biggest US, Hispanic and international Latino fan bases?
And the Steelers are right up there amongst the top
of that. For you, somebody who wore that uniform. When

(03:41):
you talk to fans outside of here, what do you
learn from their fandom?

Speaker 5 (03:46):
The passion is everywhere. It doesn't just reside in the
city of Pittsburgh. It's everywhere. Honestly. I remember we played
in a few other cities, one like San Diego when
they used to be in San Diego charges when they
used to be in San Diego.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
That was a great following.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
Even if we were to go to Kansas City, that's
following everywhere the Steelers go. When it comes to the Myron,
the late Myron coat, terrible towel, it is, it is,
it is a staple to who we are, and in
recognize it, who are We come here to Atlanta, which
is where I live, my son and I. When it
comes to Mercedes Ben's Dome, you see more black and

(04:23):
gold in side the dome than you do the black
and red. So the Steelers, you know. And unfortunately for
that camera that was only a small.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Little right right, right right.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
If you could have.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Expanded the eye and the land on that camera, I
don't think you can understand. It looked as if you
were at a home game. I mean, honestly, it was
just that many people, and it was it was chaos,
control chaos, sure, sure of control chaos, But it was
unbelievable support, unbelievable support for the Steelers organization and the players,

(04:56):
and including the retired players that were there too as well.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
So Cordel, you were down there, you had a chance
to experience not just the passion of those fans down there,
but also the culture. What did you walk away from
that experience that you said, you know what, I'm going
to have maybe this cuisine now, or maybe I'm going
to listen to this kind of music. What did you
take away from that culture that you brought with you
back to where you live now in Atlanta the Guacamole.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Period, talk about it.

Speaker 5 (05:28):
I'm telling you it is the freshest And I'm not
saying what we have here is not good, but there
for some reason, like payd there right, But everything about
you know, the cuisine, to the lifestyle, the way they
live and the way they.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Take care of those who are not from there.

Speaker 5 (05:48):
Uh, it's just the hospitality that you would love to
have if you're going on the road outside of your
comfort zone to another place where they live a little different.
There's a lot of people in one area, but you
wouldn't feel it. You know, visually you can see it,
but when you see how they move around, everybody moves
around just as comfortable if they had two to three
acres of piece, you know, on each piece of property.

(06:08):
But you know, it's a great community. People are very humble,
very hospitable. The food is excellent, the culture is second
to none. We had a chance to visit I can't
get the name, but we had a chance to visit
one of the very historical parks that you guys have
there and talked about all the four hundred kings and
emperors that was actually running this certain area and it's

(06:31):
just a lot to take in. At one time, we
didn't have enough time to really embrace it to where
it could stick to our minds and where we want
to but just being a part of it in it
it was very comforting and very very unique in its
own right.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, there's a lot of history to take in, no
question there.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
But as you're sitting amongst the fans in this other country,
but you're also watching.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
The x's and o's, I know you are. I know
you are when you watch coach.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Toman, who has yet to have a losing season and
going into a primetime game in Vegas, that's not an
easy thing to do, and down to the wire found
a way to win. What should Steelers fans be feeling
and looking forward to as you go into Week four.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
Well, the beautiful thing about this game, it derives all
the way back to the seventies, right the immaculate reception,
right when frank O Harris, the late Franco Harris ended
up picking up the allegedly off the turf or in
mid air to score the touchdown and winning that game.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
You're now having an opportunity to see this game be
played on the West Coast out in Vegas where their
new home is the Raiders that is.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
But that was the game, honestly that you just get
excited because of the matchup and the rivalry that's been
established since the seventies.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
About this matchup.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
But Kenny Pikett did a phenomenal job in this last
game of finding the open guys, making plays with his feet.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Defense was feast of famine.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
They were all over the place, caused Jimmy Garoppolo so
much havoc and being comfortable in the pocket. He never
had that opportunity, but he came down to the wire right,
the kind of game that when watching it, that's what
you would like to have the opportunity to see something
that keeps you in your see, keep you in tuned,
but most importantly hopefully come out on a good end

(08:09):
of sticking. Coach Towmlin, who's done a phenomenal job over
the years, end up coming out on the better side
of that thing to bring that victory back home to Pittsburgh.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
He's always great for a quote too, and so inspirational
and just to hear him when he's fielding questions is
the best you'd mentioned what Kenny Pickett did in that game.
This offense, though, there's been some dissatisfaction right especially with
the OC Matt Canada. At one point in time, there

(08:38):
was booing of him fair or unfair, and it seems
like the offense has a tough time getting going and
then when it finally does get going, where you see
Pickings going going nuts, catching the ball and getting tons
of yack. What do you think of the evolution of
this offense under Matt Canada.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
I mean, it just takes time, you know. I remember
being at Pittsburgh in six years. I had fortune and coordinators.
That's not fun, okay, when starting at the quarterback position.
So coach make Canada, I think he's good where he is. Honestly,
you just have to give it an opportunity to evolve.
Whether it's establishing the run, whether it's the past, whatever
it may be, you've got to give it an opportunity

(09:23):
to get his feet wet, if you will.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
With the Kenny Pickett and.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
The rest of the team trying to figure out what
to do with Nazia Harris, whether it's running downhill between
the tackles on the perimeter, catching the ball out of
the backfield, whatever. You got to give it some time
because you know Ben's not there anymore. That team of
old with James Harrison and the company is not there anymore.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
So it's going to take patience to allow this thing
to happen.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
Right now, they're head of the curve when it comes
to wins and losses, which is a good thing. And
sometimes ugly wins can teach you how to coach player
right from a better place than losing the other ugly way.
And then we hear the booze ramp up even higher.
So I like the direction they're going in. Players got
to play too, you know, it's not always a calling
all the time. You know, sometimes you have to overcome

(10:08):
coaching sometimes. If that's the case, that's what people are
alluding to by booing and uh, you know, those guys
are gonna find their mark as time progress and they
get more comfortable because you know, in that division, you
have Joe Burrow who's just got back, he's healthy. You
see what going on with Deshaun Watson with the Cleveland Browns,
and you see what Joe uh, what is it Lamar
Jackson in Baltimore. So this is not an easy division

(10:31):
to be by any means. When it comes down to
you know, how do you play? You need to get
started off fast, get started off soon and early so
that when it comes down to those divisional games you
could be prepared to go out and fight.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Oh I love that patience growing the next generation.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
I feel like this all leads me to my next
question because I cannot let you go without talking about
your college team Oka Colorado and ask me.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Big game this week on a get to us.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
I mean, what's going on with Prime and with this
Colorado team is the biggest story and with good reason
in football outside of NFL.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
It's huge. And you have talked.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
About your support for the team, and I think there
are many narratives right, different ways you can go with this.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
The thing is it has changed, the culture has changed.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Prime has changed it and people need to either get
on board or get out the way.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Because what was it you said in your Instagram. We coming,
So what are you right out?

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Actually we went from coming to now we're here period.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
So here's the thing with with with what's going on
in Colorado. One, it's it's a it's a phenomenon, right,
It's it's it's caught the world of football on every
level by Storm, a guy who played the game at
the highest levels on a consistent basis, to starting off
with this little league called truth, to go into Trinity,

(11:54):
to then going to jacksone state and turning that program around,
and actually all of HBCU when it comes to relevance
and respect from.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
The media, let alone everyone around the to.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
Now going into my Albumata at the University of Colorado,
where we were in desperate need.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Of some type of action and Prime has come in
and gave us.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
Given us so far everything but that, everything else beyond
that and then some to where you know, you look
at merchandising.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
We're second in all of sports.

Speaker 5 (12:24):
And all the college sports behind Georgia who won two
national championships, and we were one and eleven last year
to winning three games, having a tough battle against Oregon,
it was just just straight out butt whipping.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Let's be transparent but one that I think it's going.

Speaker 5 (12:41):
To give us the experience that we need to keep
us psychologically locked in on what's most important. So it's
going to be very challenging, right because when you have
high hopes and you expect to win every single game,
when you get hit like that, the question is how
do you respond? So now you're going to be able
to see throughout the building, throughout the coaching staff, and
even for the most part, the fan base because we're

(13:02):
not concerned about the outside.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Noises like the media things of that nature.

Speaker 5 (13:06):
But those who are in the trenches, we're gonna find
out a lot about a lot about about them because
this upcoming we we have USC it's not going.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
To get easier. So I'm looking forward to it. I'll
be there for sure. Yeah, of course I'll be there.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
And it's just one of those things, man, where you know,
it's not so much you know how hard you got hit,
is how you get up from the hit. And I
think this team is going to I think they've been
battle tested, they get it. If they thought they were great,
they got a little, you know, opportunity to taste that
type of pie, right which which rightfully, So it's an adjustment, right,

(13:41):
you know, everything is about it's like evident flows of
like a roller coaster.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Right, it goes up, it comes down.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
But if you can find that happy medium where you
can ride smooth throughout the race and knowing the journey
is about the process, We're gonna be just fine. And
I'm not concerning because we have the best head coach
in all the coasts football.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I love it too, and you know Primes keeping those receipts.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
Too, all that.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
Yeah, I think it's just good for the game, good
for the next class of players that's coming into the NFL.
Adversity builds character, we know that. And it's just fun
to watch, if nothing else. What a show. But it's
not just to talk. What's happening over there is very

(14:22):
very real. So we can understand, especially for somebody who's
who's an alum from over there, why you're so proud
and why you're so confident. Thank you so much for
coming here so much. We talked to Colorado, what a time.
We appreciate you so much.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Thanks for the time, Cornell, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Yes, take care to take care.
