Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is the Jaguars Broadcast Week Interview podcast presented by
ever Bang. I'm JP Shadwick with the best of the
week from Jaguars Radio, Jaguars dot Com, and our Jaguars
YouTube channel. The Jags meet the Detroit Lions at one
o'clock Saturday in pre season week two at Ford Field
in downtown Detroit, Michigan. They also met the Lions on
the practice field this week for two days in Alan Park,

(00:28):
the home of the Lions facility. A review of all
that coming up. Let's start with the review of the
preseason week one performance. Tony Boselli and I discussed right
tackle Anton Harrison and all the rookie performances in Dallas
last week on the Monday edition of Jaguars Happy Hour.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Let's rewind a little bit.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
You touched on Anton Harrison and Pete and I talked
about it in the first hour just you're gonna have
obviously a much better answer and analysis on his performance.
But boy, those feet are no lying, Tony. He can
move around. That was as advertised.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Oh he's a great athlete.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
I mean, he's a fluid, fluid big man, And that was,
you know, as advertised.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
JP. I think is the way I would say it.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
What I also liked, I thought he was Now it
was just the first preseason game.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
He's playing against backups, but I thought he was more
physical in the run game as well. I liked it.
I mean I thought he had a little get.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Off and he was trying to finish blocks. There's there's
urgency to him. I mean that was, you know, for
his first debut in a live action on the field.
I thought that was very, very positive. Now there's some
things he needs to clean up in his sets that
he gets away with because he's such a great athlete
that a better player.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Is gonna put stress on him. I mean, there was
no stress for him in that game.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
I mean, you know, Dante Fowler is you know not
it was never a great pass rusher, and you know
he's older now, so you know, that wasn't a huge test.
It was good to work against it. And some of
those younger guys that I couldn't even tell you their names.
He's gonna be facing, you know, much better caliber player

(02:08):
when it counts.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
But with that set, he did his job.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Needs to clean up some stuff on the backside, got
you know how he hands the backside, especially on some
of those counter runs. But overall, if I was Phil Rauscher,
I'd be like, Okay, like I saw it in practice,
I've seen it now in the game field. This kid
can play. And the one thing he can't do is
past blot. I mean, he is athletic and he's a guy.

(02:33):
I mean, he's gonna play right this year, but I
mean he he could play left.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
I mean that's what he didn't call him.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
He's that good of an athlete. And so that was
very positive.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Overall. I thought the line was fine.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
They you know, probably struggled in the run game a
little bit early, but they got it going and Travis
and Bigsby another positive performance for a young player.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
But he has he does right and the way they
blocked it up on that big run was huge, and
he just bounced it out there and turned on the Jets.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah he has. You know, there's a third and one.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
I'd like to see him maybe get the pad level
a little low and and get underneath that defender and
maybe he could get that. You know, he was the
only needed a half yard would have got the first
down early in that game. You know, little things like that,
but that's you know, that's nitpicky. So you look at
the rookies, that was positive, I thought really positive.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Jaguars Happy Hour Monday airs four to six pm on
ten ten xl a M, Jaguars dot Com, and the
Jaguars YouTube channel. Now to the Jaguars Lions practices this
week at the Lions facility in Allen Park, Michigan. We
begin with head coach Doug Peterson's expectations for the week
of work and his Wednesday morning conversation with the media.

Speaker 5 (03:48):
We spoke when the when the preseason schedule came out.
You know, we we both got on a phone called
each other and and uh, you know, expressed interest to
do a joint practice. And obviously for us getting out
of you know, Northeast Florida and one hundred degree temperatures
to come up here and and and again it's good
for you know, it's good for the team. But yeah,
Dan and I we spoke and and you know, I

(04:10):
had I both agreed that we wanted to do this
and and kind of set the ground rules for the
next couple of days and and you know, we just
want to get some good solid work in and uh
and and you know, compete against each other thanks to
what they did last year offensively have added expected to
go with your test for.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Your defense next couple of days.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
And Saturday, Yeah, you know what this is. We're still preseason.
We're still learning and evaluating. We're gonna practice a lot
of guys. You know, I don't I don't look back
to last year. I mean, they got us, obviously, and
it wasn't our best day. But this is a good
football team, you know, a one that you know, I
think is going to compete in the NFC and and
you know it's gonna be good for us these next
couple of days. If there's something about that game that

(04:50):
helped you guys, you know, come together and turn a corner, well,
I mean other than the fact that you know, we
didn't play our best football and for whatever reason, just
there's moments throughout a course of an NFL year where
there's there's games, there's you know, uh, situations, it might
be could be an injury to your team, whatever it
might be.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
That the kind of.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Spurs a little bit inside of everybody, coaches and players,
and and obviously that was a that was a moment
that wasn't our best and and uh we we seem
to kind of figure it out from there and and
and flip it, flip it around.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
After that, Yeah, said he's looking forward to seeing his
guys go up against your skill position players and his
guys against your D line. Are there any areas in
particular that vice versa you're kind of looking.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
I mean, you know, we've got a lot of young
secondary guys taking away the you know, like Tyson Campbell,
Darius Williams of starters. We've got some young young guys
in the secondary that that we want to see against
this this caliber receiving group that that Detroit has, and
and and sort of vice versa that way, And you know,
obviously up front, you know, we we know how you know,
the big guys are going to compete again, just our

(05:57):
offensive line against their D line and vice versa. I mean,
those are all those are all things we want to see.
But at the same time, you know, we're trying to
get better. This is week two of the preseason, you know,
for both teams, and and we're just trying to get
better and improve and and you know it's still a
long way before Week one.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
The Jags and Lions worked in full pads against each
other Wednesday, and a few times there were some minor
skirmishes between the teams. Kay Stevens, John Oser, and Brian
Sexton reviewed on jags Am Thursday.

Speaker 7 (06:26):
It was definitely Chippier and Jeff Logaman talking about the
How to lot Spot podcast yesterday. I thought maybe it
was a little overdone on the Lions part. I kind
of got a little bit of that sense the Jaguars,
to me, Brian, seemed yesterday when the Lions were sort
of pushing and shoving, it was more of, Okay, let's
stop this.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
We have work to do.

Speaker 7 (06:46):
I don't know what's right, what's wrong. I don't think
anything was a big deal yesterday in terms of, you know,
I don't think these teams are gonna have any built
up resentment from yesterday. I start it sort of spoke
to two different approaches, and the jag was really aren't
a big fight team in practice with themselves, so I
didn't expect it to carry over to another opponent.

Speaker 8 (07:07):
It was an early hit I forget which linebacker was
for the Lions that took traves etn all the way
to the ground in an early session where they were
completely live. That kind of jump started it and got
the fire lit. But I watched his Brandon Sheriff in particular,
went over and it's not okay, guys, we're all pros
here trying to get to the regular season healthy. Let's
not let this get out of control. I mean, he

(07:28):
of all people, got in the middle, five time pro bowler,
got a lot of credibility and calmed it down just
a little bit. I was watching almost exclusively Anton Harrison
against Aiden Hutchinson, and then I would flip to the
other field and watch Josh and Trayvon against the offensive
tackles for the Lions, and not a lot of fighting there,

(07:50):
although I think Aiden Hutchinson at one point wanted two.
I'm gonna hold off on that because it's part of
my will.

Speaker 9 (07:54):
He won't.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
He might.

Speaker 8 (07:55):
Anton Harrison was extraordinarily physical with him and kept him
from getting any We're near Trevor Lawrence. It was really
good to see, and I.

Speaker 7 (08:03):
Think what you want to see is in these things
is that competitive fire.

Speaker 8 (08:06):
But you don't want it to get out of control, right.

Speaker 7 (08:07):
You don't want these crazy fights that sometimes you see
in other camps where it's it's not a market discipline, right,
It's not a nice game. You're gonna have some of that.
We're talking to Walk a little afterward. He said, you're
almost disappointed a little bit if there's not something like that,
and you kind of expected. He as, they disappointed, But
that was the feel I got of It's going to
happen when it happens, as long as it doesn't escalate

(08:28):
into something where they're, you know, throwing helmets and rolling
off the field. I don't think anything. I think anybody
look back at it as a very big deal.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Jags am is now on Jaguars dot Com and the
Jags YouTube channel each Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I caught
up with a few Jaguars players after the first day
of work, including tight end Evan Ingram, who enjoyed that
work against a different group.

Speaker 10 (08:51):
It was really different in the best way possible. Great
work against a great team team that you know, we're
kind of in the same boat. You know, we shock
some people. Year kind of got going towards the end.
Both teams got going towards the end, and so for
us to come out here and compete with each other,
iron sharpers, iron and things got a little chippy. That's
we love it. We's gotta be smart and continue to work.

(09:12):
But it was definitely a great day of work, chippy.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
But not over the edge, right, I mean there's a
fine line.

Speaker 10 (09:17):
Yeah, you definitely just protect your guys obviously, but between
the whistles, that's that's kind of our mentality. Let's do
all our talking, let's do all our work, let's do
all our fighting between the whistles, and after the whistle,
you know, just protect your teammates and you know, don't
don't throw any punches.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Week two preseason. So where is this offense right now?
Are you guys getting closer to what you would call
week one?

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Ready?

Speaker 1 (09:38):
And when will you know that?

Speaker 10 (09:40):
I mean, our mentality is, you know, if we had
to wake up and play tomorrow, we're gonna get ready
to go. Still, some things we got cleaned up, and
I think at this point it's getting to really technical things,
small things that are in our control.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
You know.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
I think we're protecting the.

Speaker 10 (09:54):
Ball a lot better, we're playing faster, we're making plays
when it comes. Just but this is a little thing
like lining up right, we'll falling off sides or false
star or whatever. Formation shit, Like just a lot of
the little technical things that we can take control of
that's what we got to improve, and you know we're
gonna keep building on that.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
It's a time of year for that though. I mean
they filled with thirteen penalties in the first preseason game.
I know you're out there for what nine plays or something,
but still this is that time of year. But some
coaching tape never hurts.

Speaker 10 (10:21):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
I mean, you live and you learn.

Speaker 10 (10:24):
We just gotta make sure we don't live as much
in that world and we learn from ouray sakes the
first time and we keep it clean the rest of
the way.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Marvin's on the other side, now, how about that?

Speaker 10 (10:33):
Yeah, man, I'm happy for him. A great, great guy,
great teammate, great pro helped us a lot last year,
made a lot of big plays for us, and he's
still still one of the most reliable receivers in the
NFL and can go up and make a big play
whenever you need him to. So I know he's been
up here before, so this is kind of home, kind
of a home for him, and I'm definitely happy for
him and wish him nothing but the best.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
So yeah, A couple times on the right side of
the line with Aiden Hutchinson across from you, So getting
to block him. Young, good strong play.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
In this league.

Speaker 10 (11:00):
Yeah, I mean that literally, that's that's the opportunity for
us to get better playing it, going against practicing against
a guy like that, A hungry guy, real real smart player,
and he's as advertised, real strong, fires off the ball,
real smart, real savvy. I mean it's it's a great
opportunity for a tight end room to get to go
up against him and get work with him. And and

(11:21):
he's leaning the room now and he's got the rest
of those guys ready to so great opportunity for us.
You know, today definitely in pads, and then tomorrow it'll
be we'll be out of pass but still we'll try
to compete.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Last thought to that point. Last week, the tight ends
had a big blocking day against Dallas. I felt like
Farrell was big, big Beak's big run. Both those guys
on the right side him and Strange put guys in
their back. I mean, that's that's physicality from this Roe man.

Speaker 10 (11:44):
That's that's our standard.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
That's what we wanted to be.

Speaker 10 (11:46):
You know now I feel like I got to catch
up to those guys in the run game. Those guys
are you know, they're putting great tape out there. They're
they're getting real physical. They're putting their nose in the
run game and they're dumping guys or putting guys on
the ground, they're finishing blocks. So you know, I think
I'm learning something from the young guys in that department.
Now I'm trying to match their intensity in the run game.
And but it starts for rich he's doing. He's doing

(12:09):
a great job with those guys. Yeah, you have really
young room, so you know, getting getting them right kind of.
It starts with mentality and then the technical stuff comes
into play, and the guy's been doing a great job.

(13:37):
After Thursday's practice against the Lions, defensive lineman Adam Goatzis
gave us an idea of how it went against Detroit
and much more.

Speaker 6 (13:46):
Yeah, it's always good, you know, anytime you're on the field,
it's a chance to compete, whether it's against your own
guys or you know another team, and you know to
be out here. I get those different looks. Like you said,
it gets you ready for the season. You know, you
can be going against you guys a lot, so you know,
it's always good to go against another offense. And these
guys had a hell of a year last year. They
bring it to us, so it's come out here today
and go against that and you know, see it all

(14:07):
again and get some get back. And you know, it
was fun.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
We see there's some chippiness, but that kind of happens,
right you get two up and coming teams together. But
there's a fine line between chippy and going over the edge.
I think you guys kind of held that held that line. Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 6 (14:21):
I mean, we all professionals out here, we all know
what it is and we're all here to compete. I
think when you take it a bit past that, then
you're doing an injustice to your team on both sides
of the ball, you know, on on our side and
on their team. You know, if you're going to go
outside of playing the game, it just affects your team
at the end of the day. So you know, we
were we were pretty level headed and we kept it
pretty composed. So it was good. It was just fun

(14:42):
to come out here. And compete two more weeks of preseason.
What do you personally want to show these next two Yeah,
I definitely want to show that I can elevate my game.
You know, I've been a pretty consistent player the last
couple of years, and I'm trying to, you know, elevate
my game in the pass rush and the run defense
and show that I can be a force on the
on the d line and keep making plays. You know,
I think my role is really being defined now and
it's doun the standout of what I can do to

(15:04):
help this team, and you know, just show how I
can help them and bring along the young guys, help
them get along, and yeah, just get ready for the season.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
It's a stout group up front, right, I Mean, there's
a bunch of guys up front on this team. So
I mean that's where it begins on defense, that defensive line,
the interior, all that everything goes together from this defense, right.

Speaker 6 (15:21):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I Mean we prought ourselves on
being one of the best in the country, and you know,
I think with the guys we got up front, the
camaraderie we have between each other, and just the way
we can pat every day. You know, there's no reason
why we can't be so you know, I think you know,
you look across that board, We've got all the tools
to be there. So we just got to do it,
you know, put it together and compete and keep working.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
Jag Warri's quarterback Trevor Lawrence, also spoke with the media
after Thursday's practice and he is excited for what the
team accomplished this week.

Speaker 9 (15:49):
I think it's great in some ways. I think it's
better because you get to really, you know, hand pick
the situations you do and get to get all that
work in. Like it's hard in preseason you don't know
which situations are gonna come up, how much you're gonna play,
all that stuff. But out here, you know you can
kind of protect yourself a little bit, but also get
the work in, get a lot of players, get a
lot of different situations work. So that's that's really good.

(16:10):
So I thought it was a good week for us,
just situationally to go against another team, another defense. You know,
we've been seeing our defense all camp, go against another
squad where we haven't really seen some of their stuff
and get to just work that.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
I think it's been.

Speaker 11 (16:21):
Good for us for ever to these a couple of
days meet your expectations.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
It was great.

Speaker 9 (16:26):
I thought it was really, Like I was just saying,
I thought it was really competitive. You see, you see
it coming out of both teams, and I thought it,
you know, it's good. That's that's how this game is played.
It's played with a lot of energy and passion. And
it's cool to see us, you know, going back and
forth and competing. So I think that was great. And
then we got some really good work in situationally and
threw kind of everything at us. And seeing a new defense,
I think that's good for us too. You know, we've
seen our defense now for two and a half three weeks,

(16:48):
and it was good to see a new new team,
new looks, new presentations, different personnel, all those things.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
I think it was really good for us as a competitor.
You just you like the Yeah, I like it.

Speaker 9 (16:57):
It makes it fun. And then obviously with Chauncey over there,
you get plenty of that, you get a lot of
doses of the of the talking.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
So it was fine.

Speaker 9 (17:04):
I think, like I said, it was really intense, didn't
really cross the line too many times, you know, I
think that's the big thing is you still want to
protect each other. This isn't these aren't games, you know, everyone,
everyone is trying to get to the fall where these
where the games mean something. And I think that's the
big thing to keep in mind is you want to
be healthy. So I think we took care of each other.
We got a lot of good work in, but the

(17:24):
competitive competitiveness was there, and I think that's the big thing.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
A few Jaguars were banged up in Wednesday's first practice
against the Lions, including tackle Josh Wells who could miss
some time, defensive tackle fully Photo Cassi, who will be
weak to week but could be back for Week one,
and rookie safety Antonio Johnson, who suffered a hamstring injury.
Jeff Logoman and I discussed Johnson and what he could
bring when healthy, plus what the Jags defense might miss

(17:49):
without him. It was all on Jaguars Happy Hour Thursday afternoon.
You know, this brings us to the Jaguars secondary conversation.
Going against some of these wide receivers the last couple
of days. We know what Tyson can can do. He
missed a little bit last week in the concussion protocol.
He's back out there. Of course. Darius Williams on the outside.
But the question mark going into last week's game that
has been a question that Doug Peterson once answered by

(18:11):
week one is that third corner spot nickel corner, who's
kind of the next guy up at corner. And one
of the names that he listed last week in our
pregame conversation was the rookie Antonio Johnson out of Texas
A and M. And I'll be honest with you, I
missed this yesterday. I missed him leaving for Yeah, he
was out, but he was out today and it's a
hamstring issue. And that's a blow for a rookie who

(18:35):
was really starting to make strides.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
In that category. He was And I saw him and
yesterday's practice rubbing his right hamstring and probably gonna miss
some time. And I will say this, I think he
might be the steal of the draft for the Jaguars.
I mean, this is the guy that was drafted in
the fifth round. I mean fifth round. And when you

(18:59):
talk to the code is at the early part of
training camp and used to start asking questions and say, hey,
you know who's starting to stand out and you're not
trying to lead him in any particular direction. You're you're
kind of trying to feel out where they want to go.
I asked that question of like three different coaches and
two of the more special teams coaches, because those are
the guys you first want to have the conversation with,

(19:21):
because look, the reality is a lot of roster spots
that are up up for grabs right now. That's the
first consideration that's taken into account. So I always talk
to those special teams guys, and then you start to
talk to the different position coaches. And when I started
asking him about you know, who's the guy that's standing out,
Antonio Johnson was the first name that came up, right,
So so I'm like, all right, you know, I got

(19:41):
to start watching him a little closer. Well, at that point,
there was no pads on. Some I'm like, well, how
in the world can you have that strong of an
opinion about a guy that hasn't even put the pads
on when he's of safety size defensive back. And then
all of a sudden, the pads go on. The first
game is played in Dallas, and I'm watching the film
and I'm going wow, wow, I mean, play after play

(20:04):
after play, you're watching Antonio Johnson and he's doing things
that you just don't see normal guys do. He's fast,
he's athletic, he can play gunner on punt team. He
can block gunners on punt return. He is around the
ball all the time. He's effortless, he's physical. I mean,
there's nothing not to like about Antonio Johnson's eyes. So
I started asking the question, there's gotta be something wrong

(20:27):
with him, right, I mean, he's psycho. Okay, he's not smart.
I mean there's gotta be something right that that knocked
him down to the fifth round. And so I actually
asked Trent Balkey to das It's like, why was he
available in the fifth round? And Trent said, look, he goes.
We had a second round grade on him, second third

(20:47):
round grade on him. I said, all right, so tell
me the truth. I mean, is he psycho? Is he?

Speaker 3 (20:52):
You know?

Speaker 2 (20:52):
Is he is? He not smart? He goes? No, He's
got great character. He has all of the things that
are you want out a player upstairs. I mean, he
was just a guy that was a safety that unless
safeties make a ton of plays on balls like Andre
Cisco at Syracuse right, a lot of intercept tremendous ball
