Speaker 1 (00:02):
Jordan and Jake go good.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm excited, ready to go.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
The home stops. He throws at a crossfield. Guess who,
George Grosse?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Here are your panther.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Hall of Honor remembers Jordan's Gross and Jake Dellome.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Week ate Jake Jordan Jake podcast. Things are not where
we would like him to be, Jake. But hey, there's
still Tames ten games left. Man. I need uh, I
need you to We got to just talk about the
state of things today, don't you think, and be just
a little bit honest about kind of the why with
(00:41):
the injuries and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Jake.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
But this is this is when it's you know, you
get you get paid to the podcast in times like
the east Man.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah, Jordan, And there's no use trying to hide from it.
I mean it's very simple with say, uh, we're struggling
football team right now, Jordan. And last week in myon
was just a game that you hate to say sometimes
they happened in the NFL. It just wasn't our day
in every in every facet, I think offensively, defensively, and
(01:10):
then special teams and so you know, I don't like
those games kind of remember one a couple of years ago,
we played Cincinnati and Cincinnati and the game started poorly
and it was over before the second quarter was over,
and we were looking for things to talk about.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
And we were.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Discussing Skyline Chile in essence the third and fourth quarter
with Luke and a Niche because we were in Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
I mean, don't get me wrong here, Jake, don't get
me wrong. I am all good with distracting and getting
off subject and all of those things, right, but it's
it's to the point with the one and six team
that it's not about Basha or saying what we would
do differently. It's like, just we got to talk about
this because it's just been rough and last week was
(02:00):
more so seven to forty and it was like so
quickly just not even a game.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, and it's unfortunate because the first drive really was
going well well, coming in with different personnels, different plays,
the fly sweep to Miles, We're throwing the ball and
we tried to get a screen backside to get that
would have been extremely nice, especially when you watch the
All twenty two version, but we had some pressure on
(02:28):
front side and Andy had to get rid of the
ball sooner. You know, and then we tried to turn
the screen and Andy was the first one to say it,
and he owned up to it. Hey, I need to
dirt that football. I need to throw it into the ground.
He was trying to make a play. And when you're
a one in five football team or whatever it may be,
at that time, you're like, I need to make a play.
(02:49):
Let's somehow, let's make a play. We're having a good
drive and we're in field goal range instead of just
dirting it and we can get three. Well, it's a
ten point swing immediately.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Don't you think, Jake that that's a tribute to just
how you play so tight when you're struggling, Like you
and I shared a team that was two and six
to start the year, and I just remember thinking like,
oh my gosh, I cannot mess it up one time.
I can't get beat one time. I can't have a penalty,
I can't and not that. When you're playing well, you
(03:20):
think you can do those things, but it doesn't even
enter your mind when things are rolling. But you are
so danged tight when you're lose, when you've lost and
when there's no momentum and the margins are thin. Man,
that's what that looks like, because, like you said, Andy
would know he's at a clinic going over screens as
a quarterback. Hey, it's a shot, you take it. If
it's not there, throwing the dirt. He would say yes
to that one hundred times. But you get in the
(03:42):
game and you're like, man, I got to make something happen.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
There's no doubt. And I agree, And I've done the
same thing. I've done this same I mean.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Like, I've never done that. I've never done that in
an NFL game. Just so we're clear, Yeah, I've never
thrown a screen for an interception.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
So what about what about a lookout block? Have you
ever done the lookout block?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Oh yeah, I've done a lookout block where you get
beat so fast that you have time to yell to
your friend Jake the quarterback look out.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, but listen, that's kind of what it seemed like.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Jordan and so Washington they're no, They're playing a wounded
opponent and their whole week it's like, hey, guys, this
team is gonna try to run the football on us.
They're running the football well. Defensively, they have some issues,
especially the front seven. They are decimated by injuries, so
we we you know, and then next thing, you know,
(04:35):
Washington's up ten nothing. Well, they're they're so positive right now,
they're feeling good about themselves. The season's going a little
better than anticipated, and so now they're gonna play with
that confidence and they're gonna jump routes. And to me,
that's what happened on the second pick the inn route
to Deontay. You know, you watched the All twenty two,
it looks like he might have stopped on the route
(04:56):
well number.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Thirteen, he had put his foot in the ground to
yours if.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Where Deontay was starting to break down, and he was
driving on the end route, you know, And that's something
that we've completed many times. It's just you start taking
chances and playing with confidence, and that's what they did.
And listen, it just got ugly. Uh and there's just
no other way around it. And so I think you
gotta flush that. And yeah, you gotta be honest with
yourself watching the film, everybody does. And hopefully we can
(05:21):
get some players back, some injured players back.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yes, it's Wednesday morning when we're taping this. I'm not
so sure what God jade veon.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Clowney, but like we miss him, we miss him dearly,
and and certainly I think we missed Josie Jewel. I
don't know when he will start to practice again, and
and things like.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
That, to get some help back, because we had opportunities.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
To get Mariota down on the rush, but we just
we didn't finish. You know, you have Seaw Smith Wade,
a rookie who had a couple of penalties.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
But I thought, and I so we still played hard.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Dan Jackson first his first time back since the preseason,
compete and play hard. Yes, there were gonna be some
rust and so that's just one of them things. Jordan,
Like you got to get ready for Wednesday's practice, to
get ready and like we're not even half way.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
It's gonna be difficult the rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
We know that we get it, but go out and
perform practice as tough as you can and be ready
to play on Sunday afternoons.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
I do not end the Dave Canalis because my football team,
which is small potatoes, no pun intended, we've lost the
last two, Okay to tough conference opponents. So now we're
six and two and I am hyper analyzing every aspect
of my practice, my messaging. All right, how do I
(06:42):
get the guys back on track? What do we need
to do? Do we need harder practice? Do we need easier practice?
Do we need harder lifting? Do we need easier lifting?
What's the pregame meal? And now you're in the NFL
and you're one and six first year head coach. I
thank god that he's got experienced head coaches on his staff.
But there's no there's no blueprint for this, Jake or no,
(07:03):
like you can't google what to do as a head
coach in this situation. And man now and now add
insults injury Jake. Now, Andy Dalton reports out that him
and his family were in an automobile accident, and it
sounds like they're okay or you know, nobody was taking
a hospital or anything. But it's like there's already a
whole bunch of stuff going wrong, and then you have
(07:25):
that happen to start the week off.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Jake.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
So, Dave canalis man, he's got a lot on his
play right now?
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, definitely so.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
And that's something whenever someone is a first time hand coach,
you know their specialty is calling plays and being an
offensive coordinator well, when you're just the old c you're
not dealing with the media and the medical reports and
are the injury reports and who's up in the construction
of the roster and who they might sign and think,
(07:52):
I mean, you just don't deal with that. You're strictly
doing the offense. And yes, you might have a media
availability one time that week. So those are the things
that he's It's a balancing act and you know he's
trying to burn the candle light both ends and in
the middle.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
It's just one of those issues where that's part of
the job. That's why it's one of thirty two in
the world.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
One thing, one thing the Panthers are not doing Jake
is sitting around doing nothing with the personnel. Now, obviously
the defense has just been a disaster of injuries to
key guys to like some of the top players in
the league obviously out for the year. So last a
couple of weeks ago, I can't remember Chack loss and
the veteran went on our practice squad. He's out now,
(08:37):
must not have liked him. Jaden Peevee was a DN
from our on our practice squad. He's been released. Wave
Chandler Wooton and Smith TJ. Smith off the active roster. Released,
Marquise Haynes signed a DN from Miami's practice squad. Johnathan
Harris signed a linebacker from the Lions practice squad. Cam
(08:58):
Gill Dan More in a company, man, they're trying like
crazy to find some guys in here that can be
starting defenders for us.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Jake, Yeah, no doubt they are.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
And but not only that, you know, he's trying to
turn that roster, find you that diamond in the rough
that eventually becomes part of the process moving forward. But
then also defensively, I just I'm looking at all the
coaches on the defensive side, and especially like EJ like,
what are you calling?
Speaker 3 (09:22):
How do you construct your front?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
You know, your your twists, your slants, your blitzes and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Now your secondary It's kind of a lot of the.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Same guys have been around, but we are starting to
get some pieces back and playing some young guys. So
that's got to be difficult as can be, because you
don't want to.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Be playing Jane Vanilla.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
But then on the on the flip side of it,
you put too much, then they're stinking and they're not
reacting and that's the last thing you want to do
in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
And so now you're traveling on the road to go
play a Denver team.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
That, yes, has a rookie quarterback, but a team that's
starting to find his stride and they're coming off of
the so you know, the mini buy because they played
the Thursday prior against the Saints. That a team that
you know, not projected to have many wins, and they're
playing pretty well. They're flying around on defense, they're starting
to run the football more effectively on offense. A young
(10:11):
quarterback that's making mistakes, but he's just a gritty little
son of a gun that he you know, passing game,
it's it's a little bit to be desired. But his
rushing attack is is really good. The kid can really run.
And they've come out and said he's a much better
athlete than we and we even anticipated. So that's a
fine balancing act that we're trying to do roster wise
(10:33):
and then certainly coaching wise, especially on the defensive side
of the ball.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
All Right, so the Denver Broncos four and three, Jake,
are you making the trip?
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I am making the trip. I will be there. I'm
looking forward to.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
It Mountain times best time don just so yeah, yeah,
Can I give you my just Can I give you
my argument as to why?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Yes? Why?
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Because everything all the sports started great time. Sunday football
eleven am is the first game, two twenty five, second game.
Sunday Night football starts at like six right, Monday night
football starts at six thirty? Is that what it is?
Six o'clock? So you get done with the game. You
don't stay up on my East Coast is brutal. You
(11:20):
could be up to like one am watching dang sports,
thinking to yourself, how am I going to recover from
this to start my week off? There's my argument. So
just enjoy being in the best time zone while you're here.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
I enjoy.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
I hear what you're saying, but I do enjoy my
central time zone. You know, games start at noon on Sunday,
whenever your home games start at three or you know,
three twenty five.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
You want to know how I know that time already
because it's one hour ahead. I just covered all this
with Mountain time zone, Jay, that is okay.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Well, I prefer the Central time zone, just to say,
that's just me.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
You want to be in the middle somewhere just like
our stance on most everything, Jake, let's just day somewhere
in the middle, not be all the way to one
side or the other.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Okay, I'm gonna go where I am, not in the
middle on this, Okay. So there's a ton of injuries
in the NFL, and it seems like each year it's
more and more.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
And I don't.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Know if the data proves this or not, but I
truly believe that the lack of true physical practices in
the preseason are leading to many of these injuries that
we're having.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
That's that's my belief. I'm getting hardly.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
I believe you need to be calloused up in camp
and you cannot have the back to back two and
a's and and things of that nature, and you know,
the load management type of aspect and things. I just, man,
I don't know, Jordan, I just we didn't have those
type of injuries. And I still think we had some
pretty freaky athletes that were very strong and fast and explosive,
(12:56):
and I don't know, Man, I just didn't have that's
a direct correlation.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
You said we didn't have those types of injuries, But
the year we went to and six to start the season,
didn't we have twenty or thirty guys on IR.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Had a bunch, but we lost. We lost a lot
of guys up front. That was the biggest issue. Todd
Steusey was let go.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Gino James signed a free agent contract, Kevin Donnalelly signed,
he retired. You know, you moved from the right to
the left. We signed the right tackle on free agencies
in decent money. He retired in training camp. So I
think a lot to do I had to do with
what was going up upfront, and that had to do with,
you know, people retiring, people moving on sudden retirement. But
(13:42):
I don't know, Jordan, I just find these injuries it's
I don't know. I just there's something about it to me.
I just think there's a direct correlation. And the padded
practices what only sixteen allowed.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
I mean, do you do feel that's a that's a
direct correlation. I'm a quarterback, I get it.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
I don't hit, I'm stay your alignment and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
I don't know. I just remember.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Even CBA and you played after that CBA, so I don't.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Know, it was definitely easier after I think that I
think that if you're gonna have I think that if
you're gonna have less practices and less hitting, then you
need to have more training to kind of counterbalance that,
because you're you gotta armor your body up, man. And
like that happens to getting acclimated to trauma, right, So,
(14:34):
like I remember I would I wouldn't bruise as easily
later in the year. And there might not be any
science to this, but you just get more used to it, right,
or like more used to having contusions, or more used
to getting your ankle twisted in a weird position. Now, sure,
some things are gonna break, or somethings are gonna tear,
(14:54):
or somethings are going to give, but there's there's got
to be some truth to that, Jake. But I don't
You're never gonna go back. They're never gonna say no,
we need more two days, we need more helmet to
helmet contact, we need like that's just the way it is.
So it's always gonna be the argument.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Right, Oh listen, and you know eighteen game is coming,
that's inevitable, so yes, it's probably.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Going to be less. But I just that's just something
that always just kind of stuck with me.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
It's like, man, we're seeing more and more and guys
are taking care of their bodies better and whatnot. But
I'm like you, I just I just think it's something
I just believe. Getting calloused up a little more in camp.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
I think it helps you want to know something that
I think is awesome. Yes, Shakira coming to Bank of
America's Stadium May thirteenth was announced earlier this week. You're
gonna be there, Jake.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
I'm not sure if I'm gonna be there, but I
wasn't expecting that transition to be quite honest.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Well, it's on the team website, so it's hot news
to cover.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Okay, you're right, but there is a big concert this weekend.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Oh yeah, I'm going to live stream it. The concert?
What the concert for a cause we've heard that three
weeks in a row. Now. I'm pretty excited.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Yeah, I'm just hopeful all the flights go. Well.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
I'll be in Denver in the Mountain time zone, which,
according to Jordan Gross is the best time.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Well, okay, what time's that concert starting? Is it? Is
it six eastern?
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Hold on?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Let me look.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
So my question is this, why have we lost two
in a row? What was the score of this last time.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
We're talking about the Panthers, not me.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
I understand, well, let's go hey, but no, it's two
in a row.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
Are you changing?
Speaker 3 (16:36):
What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Are we having I'm trying not to panic. I'm being
honest and trying not to panic. We lost by one
point to the number two team in the state, and
then we lost by We lost fourteen zero. Jake bad,
bad offensive output, six penalties in the first two drives
by us. And the team we're playing is like a
(16:58):
wing tea team. I mean they ran the ball. They
threw the ball ten times, three completions for eighteen yards,
and just ran the ball. Ran the ball, ran the ball.
We got in the red zone first and goal on
the five two times. Guess how many points we came
away with. We stilled in the game, so guess yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Well, what was the play calling? Like, I mean to
throw it?
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Do we blend? Yeah? No, it was a blend. We
had some guys open, we missed. We just didn't block
well on a run play here. It was a good
high school football game.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Man, it was what about, like, do we not want
to get points on the board at some point?
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Well, I forgot I forgot that if you score, it helps.
That's where I went wrong. You know, I'm on the sidelines.
I'm like, you know, this is we're good here. We
made it down. We drove the ball eighty yards. That's fine,
that's good enough.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
You know, maybe that's what happened to the Panthers too,
That's what coach Canalis got a case of the Jordan Grosses.
You know, hey, you know what. We scored seven. That's plenty.
Let's let them have their day now. We'll be okay.
We're going up the going to the mountains now. It's
up to five thousand feet kick off. The game is
supposed to be like forty two degrees. We're playing McCall donnelly, Vandals,
(18:11):
my nephews on the team the other.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Night, and you'all beat them last year if I can remember.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
No, no, no, I didn't beat anybody last year.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
So yeah, I'm I'm trying to pump you up, Jordan.
I'm trying for six and.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Two, Bud. We're fine. We got the playoffs starting next week.
If we win, we got a chance of having a bye.
Everything's good, everything's good.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
I just.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
A loss of opportunity. But we're going to reload and
get going. All right, so enough about us.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
So the Panthers and the Panthers reloading it going.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Well, they better I think the trip, you know, much
like the Grizzlies. They're going to the mountain time zone
up to mile high, cooler weather, change the scene or eight,
let's roll two and six. Here we go, been here done.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
No homecoming went well with no football game. No football
game unfortunately due to an incident out of our control.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
But everything else went great.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
We got toilet paper three times last week, which time.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Uh I pick up in the yard.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Yes, And the trees we're still there's still many much hanging.
We haven't had rain in a few weeks here, not
allowed to win. So it's not like much as falling.
And I'm not getting on a ladder right now to
get up to try to get some toilet paper out
of a tree, to be quite honest.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
So you just leave it.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Well, I mean, little by little, some fall every day.
It's I mean, it's it's coming down.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
What you know, just kid being kids.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
I will say this, there was nothing stupid, you know
what I mean, Like you hear things going on, but
like it was none of that.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
It was strictly toilet paper and stuff like that. So
appreciative of that.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Concert for Carolina. Lineup ready, Luke Combs, Eric Church, Billy Strings,
James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Bailey Zimmerman, Avid Brothers,
Scotty McCreary, Chase, Rice Parmally. You can only go to
one performer? Who you going to? Ooh, and all these
performers are for sure listening to this episode, so good luck.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Well, and I'm doing this because of age. It would
be Luke Combs, but I'm going to see James Taylor.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
I'm with you. I'm with you there. I mean, I'm
the Brothers and Luke Combs. Concert's great. But James Taylor,
I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I mean, you
gotta hear that.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
I just like you.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Did you think James Taylor jumped on the podcast there for?
Speaker 3 (20:50):
I mean, I thought I was talking. I thought that's
who was on the other end. It's unbelievable, James. But
James Taylor. I saw him in concert one time and Frankfurt, Germany.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Were you in the NFL Europe or something? I was
how about that?
Speaker 2 (21:06):
I wasn't good enough to be a first round pick
out of Utah and just had the life of luxury.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
But at least you're the starter, not behind a good
quarterback in front of you.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
I started in Frankfort. You don't even know my history.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
I remember in Amsterdam, Kurt Warner, you know that lane quarterback.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Well, well, Jake, good luck out there in Denver. I'm
gonna go try to win the final regular season game
for our season, and hopefully there's exciting things to talk
about next week.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Well, listen, I think there will be.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
Hopefully you guys get the win and you take it
easy on your nephew, but you get the win, and
hopefully the Panthers I think we'll show up, you know,
and maybe we'll have a some rise or two for
the Denver Broncos, and.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Yeah, we'll see what happens, all right, best time zone?
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I agree, Mountain Time on three, Mountain Time
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Four
