Gregg Rosenthal is joined by Steve Wyche and Jourdan Rodrigue of the Athletic for the debut episode of Quarterback Island. There are only 12 spots on the island and only the best of the best get to make the trip. Which quarterbacks gets a spot on the island and which quarterbacks gets left in the water?

that Jamis Winston can't emerge and find us a lot
on Quarterback Island by the end of the season. He's
not eligible right now. He's not a starting quarterback. And
that's the first thing. But do you want to explain, Jordan,
how a guy gets on Quarterback Island?

We're calibrating Quarterback Island right now. We're going to cut
it at twelve, so twelve quarterbacks will be voted onto
the island. We will do the voting majority vote. There's

we're going to talk through different quarterbacks and we're going
to vote about whether or not they are allowed on
Quarterback Island. We're gonna do this throughout the season. We
also can vote people off the island. There's gonna be
some politicking involved. There's gonna be some high stakes backstabbing.
Mm down the line, I'm already trying to buy Steve's votes.

So Greg, you better watch your back, man.

I mean, so we're like on the island, I mean
just survivor tech.

Yeah, we are, we are there and I look at
it and you can tell me if I'm wrong. Like
what twelve quarterbacks as we enter the season. It's not
just who's the best? There's it's a little it's a
little vague, you know, I don't know if vegas the
right word. It's a little nebulos, like what quarterbacks define
the position? Right now? What quarterbacks do you want on

that island with who are the best? But also who
are the best long term? Who are the best short term?

It's and we can have and that's going to be
the fun part is debating over okay, but there are
two rules that we are starting out with. I'm looking
directly at you, Greg, okay, right now, I'm not worried
about Steve. I'm looking directly okay. Currently injured quarterbacks do
not qualify. So justin Herbert, who would be on quarterback
Island currently dealing with planter fasciitis kind of situation is

They hope to have a resolution of this, but situation
currently has less of a conclusion than we'd like.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
This time of year, we don't want to start Quarterback
Island with a guy who might not suit up there.
We're going to reconvene. It might be as early as
week one, week two, once we see some data. And
then justin Herbert and good.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Ga, yes, and he could, he could. Justin Herbert could
end up kicking someone else off the island, which is
this is where the stakes come in. But also no rookies.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
Okay, we'll revisit that.

We will not revisit. Let's no rookies until the season starts,
because Caleb Williams could come in and kick someone off.
Jayden Daniels, JJ McCarthy, your guy. I saw you tweeting

Oh, come in, But Steve and I are going to
gang up on you here because they got to play
some real football first.

Greg, We'll get to it when we get to the
NFC North, but let's start NFC East because look, maybe
we all have different visions of what quarterback Island should be.
But to me, I think we start with the NFC
East and the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott And it's
kind of easy to forget. Lamar Jackson last year unanimous MVP,

but there was a second place into this of MVP votes,
and he was the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. So to me,
this is one I don't think there needs to be
a ton of discussion about. I think Dak Prescott's a
pretty logical just choice.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yes, yes, is around. Yes.

Speaker 6 (05:45):
My question is this, what if we like don't even
get like halfway through this, are we voting people off?

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yes?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yes, if we get twelve people on and Eric keep
us honest, because I think that's the best way to
do it. If we happen to get twelve people we
get to the last division yet, then we'll have to
kick some people off. But Dak is definitely on. I
think we can say Daniel Jones of the New York
Giants is not a tough one here. He is definitely
a no across the board.

I hope he has his floaties.

Even at his peak two years ago. I don't think
he ever would have gotten onto quarterback Island. Would if
we have been a top twelve quarterback at some point
in the twenty two season.

Maybe, but I yeah, he might have been on the
quarterback raft.

Okay, he was one of the eight remaining quarterbacks of
the twenty twenty two players. We don't need to spend
too much time on the guys who are obvious. Jayde
Daniels you mentioned, is just eliminated. We don't even have
to vote applicable. He's not He's not a guy. Jalen Hurts.
I'm curious if we need to vote at all or
talk about or if we're in unison here that we

all have him on the island.

Because I welcome Jalen.

Welcome Jalen, the second person. You would be good vibes
by the way I think Quarterback Island. You want to
it's a handsome it's a handsome man at it. It's
pretty privileged island. Yeah, like that's that was a great
mena Kime's reference there on that show. So I think
with Jalen Hurts, I really cannot wait to see what
this offense looks like. I can't wait what it will

look like with more motion that actually means something, not
just motion for the sake of motion, eye candy, that
actually changes gaps, that actually realigns formations in space. And
I can't ever discount what Jalen Hurts can do, you know,
with that dual threat ability, especially when he's gonna have
a really good running back with him in Saquon. Yes,

But at the same time, the dude can throw the
hell out of the ball as well. And he has
played at a very high level quarterbacks, some deep, deep
deep playoff team super Bowl loss obviously, but teams that
when even when the defense was doing nothing to help him.
Jalen Hurts belongs on Quarterback Island. Now, if this offense
comes out and and you know, just craps the bed,

then we'll revisit the conversation. But he is an outstanding
quarterback on Quarterback Ey.

He got like three awesome targets too. I mean, yeah,
Dallascott and HJ. Brown and Smith.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
But do we take that into account, Jordan with Quarterback Island,
you almost have to.

I'm going to take that into account.

Some of the arguments make Well, here's the thing with Hurts.
I saw that ESPN Jeremy Fowler Executive poll. They had
him thirteenth. But you know they they.

Also thought that Josh Allen was overrated.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
So they well, no, but that was one guy thought
that you know, they people like to pull, you know,
but he was like second on that list. They had
him thirteenth. I saw our guy, Stephen Ruiz, my guy,
I'm not going to give him to you guys. I
don't even know if you know Steven.

I love Steve.

He had him like thirteenth in his quarterback rankings too,
So I do think there's an underappreciation of how much
Jalen Hurts can do just as a physical threat. And
I was really excited that when he got to camp.
Everyone said after it was a little rocky picking up
the Kellen Moore offense in the off season night and day,
and the ball hasn't been on the ground that much

at camp. And to me, he's he's a no brainer.
People are too quick to put some of these other
guys will get to above Jalen Hurt. So I'm I'm
glad he's on. That's the NFC East. We have two
on from the NFC East.

Let's go you're on quarterback guy, Let's go to NFC.
Jared Goff is an interesting way. Let's talk about him
before we do any voting, because I feel like he
could be right there at the border at least he's
in that area.

Let's be real when we made our list. You guys
tell me if you're different. There's about seven, six or
seven are like, okay, that seems pretty He's on for sure.
There's about ten that are definitely not on. And then
there's about ten, yeah, ten to twelve that I think
we got to talk about. And I think Goff is
one of those guys. Does anyone want to make a

case four or against Jared Goff.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
I'll make the case for Jared, Okay. I mean, one,
he's a damn good player.

Speaker 6 (09:52):
Two he's got arguably I'm gonna put one of the
top three play designers, and Ben Johnson can stuff up
for him. You know, great offensive line. They've paid four
of their starting five offensive lineman they should, They've invested
heavily in the O line.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
And he's got like just studs everywhere you look to
throw it to.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
I mean, so besides being a good player, having a
great play designer, great offensive line, he's I mean, we're
gonna we're gonna get into some debate and I'm not
saying he's being carried here because I think he's a
proper well.

Speaker 5 (10:26):
It is the first thing you brought up though, and
to me, I.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Said he was a great player.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
We all disagree maybe on what it takes to be
on quarterback, and to me, the teammates don't matter because
that much because I'm thinking he's on an island.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
We want that.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
I want the twelve guys who defined the position right
who are playing the best right now. And yes, you're right,
if they have great people around him, then we'll look
smarter because he's gonna have a good season. But I'm
more thinking about the guy I want a little bit
in a vacuum, and so I think Goff maybe struggles
in that front.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
You know what, though, I'm okay with Jared Goff and
of in a vacuum, I'm less okay with Jared Goff
against some of these crazy pressure defenses, but in a vacuum.
To your point, Greg, just in a vacuum. I don't
think Jared Goff is out here lowering any floors for
teammates and is being He is doing what he's asked
to do. But he is also at this point in

(11:18):
his career, far less so than perhaps in previous years,
elevating along with a group that is peaking at the
right time. I think I talk about this all the time.
I think pace is one of the sneaky most important
things for a quarterback to have along with his organization,
not to outgrow the pace of the organization, not to
undergrow the pace of the organization, but to match it

(11:40):
along with those playmakers, along with the collaborators that are
helping this thing go. I'm not saying that, you know,
Jared Goff can lift the you know, chiefs receivers that
we've seen over the past couple I'm not saying that
at all. That's a whole other conversation. I'm just saying
he has the right pace. I do think he belongs
on quarterbacky. I will also say, though, that I flip

flopped a lot of times with a lot of guys
sort of in that middle tier to the point where
it was like a dunk tank situation. It's like you're
in the water.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
I'll try to convince you out of it. Because I'm
voting no. I'm voting no for Jared Goff. I want
to see what you guys are voting.

Speaker 2 (12:17):

But he might be the first guy to get to
get pulled off the plane.

I agree with Steve. I'm voting yes, but it might
be he might just keep one pinky toad dipped in there.

Okay, well, I'm trying to avoid an embarrassing situation. If
you guys say you like Jared Goff as much as
you do, like, maybe save him the embarrassment of him
being on the island and thinking he's all good. This
is like when he was on Rams Island and they
booted him off because they wanted a shinier model. Later,
what if he gets kicked off for Matthew Stafford in.

A little bit.

Jared Jared Goff tied for sixth in EPA per play
zero point one one EPA p pass play with c. J.
Stroud and Matthew Stafford. And yes, a lot of factors
go into that. It's not going to be the sexy
brand of throwing the ball that we see from other quarterbacks,
but it's getting the job done.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
I'm just saying, on this island, things can get bumpy.
You get you know, hurricanes, you need food. Like you
were worried about him handling a pressure defense, how about
a pressure front coming in. It might not be able
to anily listen.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
When you're on an island, you just need one person
who you can outrun when the bear's coming all right.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Okay, Wow, we're talking squalls.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
I don't know if Jared Goff might be the slowest
guy on this island when we get to the end
of it, so he might be the guy people are
out running. All right, let's stay in the division. Let's
go to the Packers. Jordan Love, do we want to
talk about it or do we want to vote? Right
off the bat. He's an interesting case because people that

thought he got paid too early. I disagree with that
because they saw enough, I think to know, they've seen
enough in their building to know what they want for
the next four to five years. It's not just about
those nine games now putting him on the quarterback island
of like twelve defining quarterbacks in the league. He's going
up against some other player eventually that I've shown it
over a longer period of time. But to me, I'm

going to vote yes right off the bat because of
the talent is just outrageous. Jordan, what do you vote?

Speaker 3 (14:10):
I'm voting yes for all the like a lot of
the reasons you said, but also because we're going to
talk about some guy. Oh, Steve's gonna have a chance
to it to Rebut here we were talking about a
lot of guys who are either peeking or potentially on
the brink of descending a little bit. There's a lot
of guys that we're going to get to that are
kind of in that category. I think is ascending along

with a really exciting core group of skill players of talent,
a coordinator that gets him and vice versa in the
in the head coach, and I think he's ascending at
the right time. That's why I vote yes.

I mean, I I agree with all that. I'm just
looking at the other list and.

I mean, it's a tiny island. Yeah, the island you're.

To me, I'm thinking about this island, not just of
like who's the best, like who who explains the quarterback position?
Who defines it in the year twenty twenty four. And
to me, when I'm looking at who's playing on Sunday
or it's Friday night to start the season, Jordan Love
is right near the very top of the list of
like guys I want to see and in that offense,

which you know, just a great young I just feel
like that's more sizzle, that's more QB island to me
than Jared Goff. So I'm voting yes.

speech here. But I think that Jordan Love, if we're
talking about embodies quarterbacking, I think he embodies it in
so many ways in terms of specifically the conversation about
development about pace, like I mentioned about what it really

takes to eventually put all the pieces together as a
player and to keep growing and to continue to push
and ascend even when all of the millions and millions
of things that come upon these players the course of
a career could break them, and adversity and all those things.
Problem solving, developing and getting better, and that is one
of the key elements that every great quarterback, eventual great

quarterback has, and he's already showing very small signs of
being able.

To do that.

going to be such a big part, I believe, of
all of our lives for the next ten or fifteen years.
He is going to be building a high rise on
quarterback Island. Like he's going to be there. We might
as well just put him there now, because who's more

Goffer or Caleb Williams.

I would just put Caleb agree without going to school first,

If CJ. Stroud can be that good right off the bat,
and why can't Caleb Williams.

guy who's who's strong, you can stay.

Bryce Young is a is a know all around. We
all hope the best for Bryce Baker Mayfield. Nice turnaround.

And yet the closer I've gotten to the season, I've
convinced myself that this Bucks team, who I'm going to
pick to win this are a little more frisky and
deeper in terms of their talent than people realize. So
I think he might be set up for more success
than people realize.

That's all I agree. We're talking top twelve here. He
may have to fight his way on.

Okay, and the final quarterback in the division is Kirk Cousins,
probably the most interesting one to talk about. You want
to make a case for or against the start off.

Jordan, I am not putting Kirk cousins interest on quarterback Island.
I had some I had some thought about this. I
had a real good think on this particular argument because
I am willing we'll get to I know we'll get
to him in a minute. I am willing to put
Aaron Rodgers on Quarterback Island and both coming off of well,

we'll see because we're getting tight on the numbers here
as Steve a steam point and.

Output, you got three on I.

I just the streakiness. You and Ollie Connolly had a
great show episode just talking about Kirk's streakiness. He's gonna
do you know, I believe in Zach Robinson, but Zach
Robinson is gonna have to learn. He's got a really
steep learning curve, almost similar to that of what a
young quarterback would have, and Kirk will help him with that.
But I just think you're one of this. I know

everyone looked at the Falcons as like, Okay, they're ready
to win now. They're ready to win now. But I
kind of tend to think that they might stall a
little because there is relative inexperience on certain things, and
I think they're gonna get scored on a lot.

Kirk Cousins, Uh, okay, you had said yes, I would
have gotten no just because of your reasoning. You got
you know, and I'm spiteful of like he's almost a little.

It's like he's a little like Cale Williams. To me,

Eagles offense, it's not just moving a guy just to
move him. It is picking up a gap, putting it

under your arm, and or running with it to another
