guys guys like genuinely like care about each other.

the guys like George Kittle and of course uh Kyle
Jushek and of course a Bruck pretty you know Arizona boy.
Really good people, you know, and then of course you
talk about the linebacker room even in whatever the status is.
Fred Warner, you know, he was a great, great player.

I've never talked about this out loud. How the hell
did you go to u c l A. Yeah, because
it's crazy.

Yeah, I'm wondering. You know, I actually overcas, actually was
offended by how I was treated by by Cale. To
be honest, you know, I think that I I think
that me and my brother were obviously on the lower
recruited side as far as coming out of high school
with the college. I my brother gained a lot of weight,

you know, he was two thirty freshman year or whatever.
But when I was getting recruited, I was still kind
of sitting around two oh five too oh eight, And
I think people were nervous if I wasn't gonna put
the weight on, you know, I put it on my
freshman year, like, you know, just like anybody, Yeah, exactly,
But I think two were kind of nervous that I
maybe wasn't going to gain the weight or they didn't

think that I was kind of like the player my
brother was. But I'm sitting here like I'm watching me Michael.
You know, Michael played pretty well for the cow Bears,
and I'm like, okay, like it's got to be natural
that I'm nept next because I felt like I was
falling in high school right and it was kind of
like an easy pipeline. It was like I'm already here, hipeline.
It was like my brother's already at school. And so

this is the time I started going to camps. And
you know, my brother, that's kind of like how he
got on the was he was going to camp and
camp to camp and just like outdoing people and getting
offers that way. So I kind of started on the
you know, I saw my brother's trajectory. I was like,
all right, bet, I gotta go to camps. So I
started going to camps. And one of the camps that
I went to was the cow Camp. I went to
a cal camp. I played three what I thought, I

had a great day you know, just like doing drills
one on ones, YadA, YadA, YadA. But after like the
end of the camp, we had a race and I
remember winning the race and then being like as soon
as I won the race, I'm like, I'm that was
it right? They know that I'm certified. I just be
I just won the race, like, and I just never
heard from him, never heard from them, And I'm like,

that was I went to the cow camp out of
the formality. You know, my brother was there.

My brother's already here.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I'm not I don't have to use the recruiting tickets
because my brother I'm getting the player's tickets, you know
what I mean. Like it was like I'm already in
the building. I'm already in the locker room.

Coaches like they know me, they're checking in on me, like,
but I was just never I never got that recruitment
from cal I never. They never even like try to
pursue me. I saw more interest through friends now State,
Washington State, Nevada, Arizona State, Stanford. Sure, but it was

like I had I was low recruited. Like I said,
I'm not like the people I told you was pretty
much whoever I was in contact with like that was
those are the teams. So UCLA came on and the
guy who recruited me was just kind of like listen.
He kind of just stayed on me and was like, listen,
we don't have an offer for you yet, but I'm

going to battle for you.

And uh.

Eventually I got that offer and I kind of my
dad went there and the rest of history.

But I like when my brother was at col it
kind of felt like with you guys too, it makes
this perfect sense. Bro, you were already there and and
it would have been hard for me not to get
account offer and not entertain it, to like not not
be my for the.

Kindrick the Kendrick brothers at linebacker would have been.

Like I would have I would have told you being like,
oh no, I don't want to go there, like because
my brother was there, but it would have for sure
been my top because I was.

everybody in line.

in school. Yeah, okay, Ticky d one to take the NFL.
I was like, U c l A is is Jordan certified?
You know, like that's that's that's tough.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
That's tough. That's tough. I remember. I remember I got
the offer from UCLA and then literally they I was
like yo, yeah, my first visit, They're like, yeah, you
gonn commit to us. I was like, I'm not gonna
commit to y'all. Like we will pull it off for
I was like, damn, you gotta do dumb. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
But that's like but like they're not, they're not doing
that with all the recruits. They just have somebody else
in mind be like.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Yeah, They're like either you're coming or you're not. And
I was like, no, like you're my first visit. I can't.
I can't commit to you guys like I don't know
yoga like that. Ah tough, but you know it worked
out well for us. How many visits did you didn't
taking four out the five. I was trying to bro
I was trying to get to Miami. I was seventeen
at the time, so Pops Pops was like, no, we're

not going. I was like, I was like, what do
you mean. I was like, it's Miami, it's the U.

He'said, you're just trying to go to Florida. I might
be I only went since I only went to U
c l A. And I only went to wash the state,
I'm like, I don't know why they adn't go on more.
But I really didn't, like I didn't think I had
it like that, because, like you said, talking with the coaches,
they would be like, like, what do you need to
take a visit for?

You know, like what do you do?

So I feel like I was kind of like, you
know what I have? I have real offers. I did
not want to mess either, I need to get cool,
like I'll go to U c l A, I go
to this. I was like, I can't be testing the
waters too much.

I feel like I was the opposite. I was like
I was acting like offers didn't matter. I was like, nah,
you know, Tennessee K coach came to visit. He said
he's gonna offer me. I'm gonna take that as an offer.
And I might have been blowing smoke out my like noah, bro,
They're like, they came in, they offered me, like it's fine,
Like you know, they came in. It's good. Like I
might have more offers, it doesn't matter. And then I

was just like I was like, I really don't want
to go too many places. I look like you of
a a s U. A SU had a head coach change.
And then it was like I was waiting on orgon
for real and Oregon just bro.

Or Organ actually was on my It was Organ between
Organ cow for my brother and I think it went
down to the wire with that. But Organ was like
Organ really never recruited me like that. I went to
their junior day, yeah, and then they kind of they
kind of fell off. I feel like it was kind

was gonna be I think Mike was an athlete for them.
I don't know if they had them at running back

Running back, safety, you know, broch athleticism. It wasn't in
many places, y'all couldn't play where I was. I was
wearing Organ Duck gear all my whole sophomore year.

like there's like every school in the n c A
wants to be as cool as Organ, you know what
I mean, Like, let's just be let's just keep it
above like I mean as far as five hundred forging changes,
as far as the merch in the and the and

like they've always been the one setting at the bar
on that. And I feel like, you know, other people
have cool thing in cool traditions and you're not saying
or is the best, but I'm just saying, like everybody
tries to be as cool as that.

Oregon band was going crazy at the time. Dennis Dixon
was a quarterback when I was coming up, I was like,
this dude's delete man. Yeah. They came in and they
like like coaching staff came in and I was like bawling.
One game. I was like, yeah, they're going to send
this offer. They sent it to my boy Dion Jordan,
and I say, yeah, I know that makes.

That's a that's a pretty solid offer from Yeah. Pretty, yeah,

three overall. Fine players, A solid player, solid as long

guys guys like genuinely like care about each other.

talk about the linebacker room even in whatever the status is.

lot of sense to me. But beyond that, you know what,
I've never talked about this out loud. How the hell
did you go to u c l A. Yeah, because
it's crazy.

Yeah, I'm wondering. You know, I actually overcas, actually was
offended by how I was treated by by Cale. To
be honest, you know, I think that I I think
that me and my brother were obviously on the lower
recruited side as far as coming out of high school
with the college. I my brother gained a lot of weight,

you know, he was two thirty freshman year or whatever.
But when I was getting recruited, I was still kind
of sitting around two oh five too oh eight, And
I think people were nervous if I wasn't gonna put
the weight on, you know, I put it on my
freshman year, like, you know, just like anybody, Yeah, exactly,
But I think two were kind of nervous that I
maybe wasn't going to gain the weight or they didn't
(06:32):
think that I was kind of like the player my
brother was. But I'm sitting here like I'm watching me Michael.
You know, Michael played pretty well for the cow Bears,
and I'm like, okay, like it's got to be natural
that I'm nept next because I felt like I was
falling in high school right and it was kind of
like an easy pipeline. It was like I'm already here, hipeline.
It was like my brother's already at school. And so
(06:55):
this is the time I started going to camps. And
you know, my brother, that's kind of like how he
got on the was he was going to camp and
camp to camp and just like outdoing people and getting
offers that way. So I kind of started on the
you know, I saw my brother's trajectory. I was like,
all right, bet, I gotta go to camps. So I
started going to camps. And one of the camps that
I went to was the cow Camp. I went to
a cal camp. I played three what I thought, I
(07:18):
had a great day you know, just like doing drills
one on ones, YadA, YadA, YadA. But after like the
end of the camp, we had a race and I
remember winning the race and then being like as soon
as I won the race, I'm like, I'm that was
it right? They know that I'm certified. I just be
I just won the race, like, and I just never
heard from him, never heard from them, And I'm like,
(07:41):
that was I went to the cow camp out of
the formality. You know, my brother was there.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
My brother's already here.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I'm not I don't have to use the recruiting tickets
because my brother I'm getting the player's tickets, you know
what I mean. Like it was like I'm already in
the building. I'm already in the locker room.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
I know the.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Coaches like they know me, they're checking in on me, like,
but I was just never I never got that recruitment
from cal I never. They never even like try to
pursue me. I saw more interest through friends now State,
Washington State, Nevada, Arizona State, Stanford. Sure, but it was

like I had I was low recruited. Like I said,
I'm not like the people I told you was pretty
much whoever I was in contact with like that was
those are the teams. So UCLA came on and the
guy who recruited me was just kind of like listen.
He kind of just stayed on me and was like, listen,
we don't have an offer for you yet, but I'm
(08:35):
going to battle for you.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
And uh.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Eventually I got that offer and I kind of my
dad went there and the rest of history.

No doubt. Boy, I kind of want I wanted to
go to u c. L A.

But I like when my brother was at col it
kind of felt like with you guys too, it makes
this perfect sense. Bro, you were already there and and
it would have been hard for me not to get
account offer and not entertain it, to like not not
be my for the.

Like I would have I would have told you being like,
oh no, I don't want to go there, like because
my brother was there, but it would have for sure
been my top because I was.

exactly what I did. I had the most reps of it, everybody,
everybody in line.

And she got it. Got me, I mean got me
in school. Yeah, okay, Ticky d one to take the NFL.
I was like, U c l A is is Jordan certified?
You know, like that's that's that's tough.

That's tough. That's tough. I remember. I remember I got
the offer from UCLA and then literally they I was
like yo, yeah, my first visit, They're like, yeah, you
gonn commit to us. I was like, I'm not gonna
commit to y'all. Like we will pull it off for
I was like, damn, you gotta do dumb. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
But that's like but like they're not, they're not doing
that with all the recruits. They just have somebody else
in mind be like.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Yeah, They're like either you're coming or you're not. And
I was like, no, like you're my first visit. I can't.
I can't commit to you guys like I don't know
yoga like that. Ah tough, but you know it worked
out well for us. How many visits did you didn't
taking four out the five. I was trying to bro
I was trying to get to Miami. I was seventeen
at the time, so Pops Pops was like, no, we're

not going. I was like, I was like, what do
you mean. I was like, it's Miami, it's the U.

He'said, you're just trying to go to Florida. I might
be I only went since I only went to U
c l A. And I only went to wash the state,
I'm like, I don't know why they adn't go on more.
But I really didn't, like I didn't think I had
it like that, because, like you said, talking with the coaches,
they would be like, like, what do you need to
take a visit for?

You know, like what do you do?
Speaker 2 (11:12):
So I feel like I was kind of like, you
know what I have? I have real offers. I did
not want to mess either, I need to get cool,
like I'll go to U c l A, I go
to this. I was like, I can't be testing the
waters too much.

I feel like I was the opposite. I was like
I was acting like offers didn't matter. I was like, nah,
you know, Tennessee K coach came to visit. He said
he's gonna offer me. I'm gonna take that as an offer.
And I might have been blowing smoke out my like noah, bro,
They're like, they came in, they offered me, like it's fine,
Like you know, they came in. It's good. Like I
might have more offers, it doesn't matter. And then I
(11:48):
was just like I was like, I really don't want
to go too many places. I look like you of
a a s U. A SU had a head coach change.
And then it was like I was waiting on orgon
for real and Oregon just bro.

Or Organ actually was on my It was Organ between
Organ cow for my brother and I think it went
down to the wire with that. But Organ was like
Organ really never recruited me like that. I went to
their junior day, yeah, and then they kind of they
kind of fell off. I feel like it was kind
of like that weight thing as well. Yeah, Mike, Mike
was gonna be I think Mike was an athlete for them.
I don't know if they had them at running back

or at linebacker.

Running back, safety, you know, broch athleticism. It wasn't in
many places, y'all couldn't play where I was. I was
wearing Organ Duck gear all my whole sophomore year.

Like I actually, I actually came to this realization that
like there's like every school in the n c A
wants to be as cool as Organ, you know what
I mean, Like, let's just be let's just keep it
above like I mean as far as five hundred forging changes,
as far as the merch in the and the and
the bell's been whistled and you know, the tech. They're

like they've always been the one setting at the bar
on that. And I feel like, you know, other people
have cool thing in cool traditions and you're not saying
or is the best, but I'm just saying, like everybody
tries to be as cool as that.

Oregon band was going crazy at the time. Dennis Dixon
was a quarterback when I was coming up, I was like,
this dude's delete man. Yeah. They came in and they
like like coaching staff came in and I was like bawling.
One game. I was like, yeah, they're going to send
this offer. They sent it to my boy Dion Jordan,
and I say, yeah, I know that makes.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
That's a that's a pretty solid offer from Yeah. Pretty, yeah,
it's pretty He just opinioned.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
He was pretty Ye. Yeah, I mean he went number
three overall. Fine players, A solid player, solid as long
as they come. You know, I'm a six four defensive
end in high school to seventy and he's a six
seven and a half two hundred and twenty pounds d
d N tight end.

Wide receivers are like, arms are like.

Yeah what four weeks? Man? It's fine? Did Like what
what weight have you always played? That? Have you like
checked high school to seventy that's crazy, six four two

that's crazy. That's pretty cool. Yeah, I feel like this.
I mean, you know, college, you saw me in college,
I was bigger than you know, I probably like somewhere

somewhere cal I got to like three really we were
three four, man, So you know what I'm saying that
four I the four inside of tackle shade to the
inside of tight end. You got to play bigger ball.

I remember Cashing March came into u c l A,
and he was he was like a three tag. He
came in. He came in way bigger and like as
he transitioned in college, like his whole body change, and
it actually set him up for the league better. Yeah,
I feel like he would have been originally.

No doubt. I still think I might have been the
reason why he didn't come to CAL, and I'm perfectly
fine with that. I think I hosted him and I
like he was just so he was. He was like
a five star at the time. I'm sure he was

I know they already picked him by then. It's weird.

It's weird to say out loud, but you know what
was that? What was that? What was that game? Like?
I mean, you guys go down to the wire forty
two thirty eight, last one, you know, the last week.
I saw the frame where was like you had DJ
Moore in the corner end zone waving his hands like
pick me, pick me. Caleb out there wheeling and dealing, flailing,
you know, the fingernail paint with the spirals totally, you know,

you putting that thing on people.

It was gritty. I mean they came down to the wire. Uh,
you know, I feel like, uh, watching the two offenses,
you know, go gets Chellie was pretty nice.

As far as coordinators, Go Shanahan and Ben Johnson are
like the by me. This is me playing against both
the team, you know, me playing against both of them.
There's just so many adjustments and so many changes they
make during the game that yeah, it's like a it's
like a real chess match.

So I feel like we we definitely saw that, but
you know it was gonna take this a little you know,
a little bit of a little bit of grit on

This this year has expanded my mind in so many

the ship that I I've always like enjoyed ignoring I
is no longer. I'm like, oh, I should have been listening.

The first four using the respect though, like that that
vision off the ball is crazy, Like you know, there's
a lot of moving parts, a lot of counting, a

formation sacks, you know, to the field of which is
the boundary, where's the running back at? Who's the running back,
who's the receiver. It's a lot of like little pre

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed.
