Speaker 1 (00:04):
All right, y'all, you know what time of day. It's me.
It's Kim Jordan. It's off here songs.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's off the edge of the podcast of Me, your host,
Kim Jordan. I'm super excited to bring in one of
my big dogs. Actually he's a big cat, but we'll
get into more of that. Because he's a first round pick,
top top ten at number like what six or something
like that. Man, it's been the Pro Bowls, you know
this this man is over fifty sacks. I think he's
sitting at like sixty change.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
You know. If I'm late, I'm wrong, and I'm wrong.
I'm sorry I'm late.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
But I think this guy has a ton of potential.
He shows a year or year out formerly of the
big you know, of the Pac ten, now they're in
the Big something or other.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
They left, you know, went to USC so they left
cal behind. Now we're at the ACC.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Whatever that is. It's my dog, big cat. Leonard Williams
aka Leo Leo.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
What's up, baby up man? Thanks for having me?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah, absolutely, bro, just over the years, a lot of
respects for your game. I met you when you was,
you know, a young cub and now you big Leo
the lion type.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
It's been a long time, man.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
It's been a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
It's time for this week's Drive for Success Conversation, presented
by Toyota.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Let's go places.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Uh, Before I even get into football, I just want
to start off, like, how did you get in the cards?
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Trading cards? You know, it was a cash a smash.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
The only other football player that I know that has
a big, big trading card collection is that guy.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, he was a big part of it, actually. But
I was collecting Pokemon cards when I was young. My
cousin was in like Pokemon tournaments. He was like playing competitively.
But at the time when I was young, I was
just into like the shiny cards. I was collecting them,
keeping them my binders and stuff like that. And then
around COVID time, I found out, you know how expensive
(01:47):
like a shiny Charsar was going for. And then I
went back home. Yeah, it was crazy first edition. Uh,
you know, shiny chars Aar was going for a lot.
And then I went home and found some of my
old buying. I didn't have much in there, you know,
but I still have a few things that were worth
some stuff. And it kind of got me back into collecting,
and once my little brother found out that I was
(02:09):
collecting Pokemon cards, he introduced me to magic to gathering,
and then that's when I got really big into cards
because magic, you know, it came from collecting to playing,
and that's when I really got competitive with it. And
then once I got into it, Cashu's Marsh actually built
me one of my first decks, which is pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
See, I don't know if I'm ever gonna get get.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
To magic, but it's pretty complicated, bro, I've.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Seen I said, Bro, that don't look like a kid's game.
That's that's a pro man game right there.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
I even try to introduce it to my girl and
she was just like, you know, it sounds like you're
speaking a different language.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
So I'm good.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
You got your thing and I got my thing. Thanks,
mab oh Man. All right, well shoot, you know we
can definitely get back to it. Just think about looking
around the league this week. Before I asked you to
get on here, you know, I didn't think it would
have this question here. Now we got Philip Rivers, you know,
will possibly sign it with gotta ask.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
I mean, what's it like?
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I mean, sure, younger years, you gotta you gotta face
him over it at the Chargers.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
You know, you're my first time facing them actually really yeah,
if he if he takes him if yeah, if he
if he plays, yeah, I take the one.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I take the one that sits in the pocket versus
one that rolls out.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I mean, you know, as a pass rusher, I mean chase. Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
You know, these modern day quarterbacks are sometimes hard to
keep in the pocket if you can't run as a
quarterback these days, you know, it's hard to get a
quarterback that's running pretty much. And you know, I much
rather have a guy that's sitting in the pocket.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Pocket.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
We got, you know, a guy's rushing on our defense
right now, and you know we're looking forward to getting
to formidable front.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
You Byron Murphy, you got to tank lords.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, I said, I said, yo, bro, like y'all just
created an all star staff and less than look.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Half a season.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
I remember playing against Law when I was on the Giants,
and you know, he used to terrorize our off's when
I was when he was with the Cowboys, and now
being paired with him is a blessing. I mean, he's
he's a vet. I think he's one year you know,
in the league more than me, but just being able
to play off of a guy like that. He's just
a ball hawk, Like he's just so good at going
(04:16):
for the ball. I mean, I think like he scored
two touchdowns this year. He's been getting the ball out
every week for some interceptions, like all types of stuff.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Man, He's he's an animal.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Hell yeah, I mean just just let's just think this
out though. You on the couch one day, are you
thirty nine, forty forty one, forty forty four years old
and somebody calls you like, hey, we got this check
for you.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Are you coming to get a check at defensive end?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I mean at that point, I don't know, forty four,
I don't know. It depends on how I'm living. Man.
I think if I'm out of the league for you know.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
That long, and I'm already fine during my retirement, man,
I think I'd be all right. Man. I think I
got my family, I got my hobbies, I got my
other inter so outside of football at that point. Yeah, don't
get me wrong, I'm gonna ride this until the wills
fall off. I mean, your eleven runner, I still feel
like I got some years of left in me. A
lot of years left in me. But I think once
(05:11):
I'm done, I'm done, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
But I finally, if the words I'm done leave my lips,
I'm not even looking back.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Hey, can we got this ten million for you? That's nice?
Keep it brother, Hey yeah, right, God is good. His
body is broken.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Man.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
So when we think about when we think about just
that landscape, right uh, you guys are sort of sort
of fighting at the top of your division right now.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
You got a major game coming in is there?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Min?
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Is there?
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Mindset chef, And it's almost like it's a playoff game.
You got top of vision, top of their division opponent
Indiapolis Coach, You guys are fighting for the top of
your division.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Where does that take you?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
I mean, honestly, I would say what I love about
this team so much from the start as we've been
just taking it one week at a time, and I
feel like that's still been the message lately. You know,
we just came up of our tenth win of the season,
still got four games left, We're in pretty much the
fourth quarter of the regular season, and you know, it's
(06:10):
obviously playoffs are in the back of our minds. But
I think what's gotten to this point is taking it
week at a time, just you know, focusing on our
opponent this week. You know, it's easier said than done.
Don't get me wrong, but I think our our team
has done a great job of like honing in. I
think we have a great combination of veterans and young
(06:32):
guys that are you know, helping us stay focused on
the mission. And right now it's that's the Colts. We
don't want to think too far in advance and start
thinking about playoffs and overlook the mission ahead.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yeah, I'm glad you said, you know last week, you know,
not focusing on it last week or focused on this week,
because y'all beat the hell out the Falcons. I just like,
you know, you just glance off and if there's one
team I despise, it's the Falcons.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I said, Oh so, yeah, whooped that ass.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
We took care of that for you, We took care
of just took care of one for us.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Oh man, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
I mean when I think about you know, you're fighting
for that number one first place, that really puts you
in the number one seed. Then you get a bye week,
bye week versus playing in a wild card homefol homefield
advantage versus n You know, it's it's if you number two,
guess what you playing. You play in the first round,
number one, you get that week off. That's that's crucial
(07:25):
for a playoff spot. So these last four games super
crucial for you.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Yeah, I mean, I think that'd be that's that's really crucial.
I think we're looking forward to playing the Rams obviously
to to clinch that that bye week, and you know
that advantage, all those advantage that.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
You just talked about.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
But also you know, we didn't play our best ball
the last time we played them, and uh, you know,
they still beat us by just a field goal. So
I think our team is hungry. We're looking forward to
playing them next week on Thursday Night football. And also,
speaking of all those advantages that we just talked about,
if we clinched that win, we've we're pretty We've had
(08:02):
a pretty banged up team. You know, all teams are
pretty banged up at this point in the season, and
to be able to have that advantage of resting a
week one of the playoffs, it would be huge.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
No doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I mean, so, so do you do you sort of
watch what the Rams are doing right now? Are you
are you paying attention to where they're at.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Yeah, I mean I'm paying attention to all of that stuff.
And it feels amazing because I've been in a lot
of years and and you know, I'm on my year
eleven right now, and I've only been to the playoffs once.
So it's a blessing to be in this position right
now where you know every game matters, and you know,
we talk about playing meaningful football in December and how
you know I've been on teams before where we're counting
(08:41):
down the days by this time of year too to
end the season, because you know, coaching staff is probably gone.
You know, you probably got two wins, you're not going
to the playoffs. Playing in miserable weather, it's like you're
not really playing for much, fighting for much, and right now,
you know everything's ahead of us. So the season feels
like it went by super fast and.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
It's been really fun and exciting.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
The play man on the flip side, bro, we won
three games this year. I'm like, this is the first
time my career where i haven't been playing meaning for
football in December. I'm like, all right, well, now I'm
playing for me and.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I'm playing for mine. Yea different mentality.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
It's sort of surreal in terms of a team sport
because you're like, all right, well, like we got to
put our best foot forward, so no matter what we do,
even if we went out, we can't go anywhere with it.
So now I got to play my best football for
my next opportunity, whatever.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
That may be.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yeah, I mean that's interesting. That's you know, we're joking
about it. It's not funny because you're in this position hurt.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
No.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
I already had my bottle tequila and I found the
depth of.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
It and I said, but I'm telling you I've been
in that position before. And it's like we were joking
about it the other day on our team because I
was like, man, when I was on the Giants, you know,
when we were bringing up the huddle before the game,
the one thing we can say to get guys motivated
to play was play for that name on your back.
Like at this point of the season, when coaching statisfied
(10:07):
you're not going through the playoffs, that's like pretty much
the only thing you can represent this point is the
name on your back.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
When they got built in excuses of why oh he
didn't give us all because he wasn't playing for anything. No,
my last name says, there's a standard exactly. I don't
know about y'all, but I gotta go get it.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Yeah, when y'all turn that tape on, you're gonna see
the same player regardless, regardless.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
In fact, now I gotta go harder because you like
to lose.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I'm on the field. They was like, bro, like how
many more years ago? Keep going, why are you going
like this? I'm like, nah, now you gonna see me.
I'm talking no reason, bro, what about what about you?
You're going against the office alignment with the in fact,
one of your office alignment had. When I think the
bubble helmets on during the game, what the little the
bubble helmets, you.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Know what I'm saying, the little Oh yeah, the guardian helmets.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Guardian cat.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah, they got Guardian cattle. I see him in practice.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
But when I see an office alignment or whoever with
the guardian cap but in the game, doesn't do anything
to you, because it does something for me.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
I'm like speed of power. I know what he's trying
to protect.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Yeah, I mean, it's pretty much like seeing somebody, you know,
if I see somebody with a bunch of tape on
their wrists. I'm like, Okay, maybe their rists is a
little banged up here somebody exactly. So I'm like, I'm
going to attack that risk like small things like that.
So you're right, like, but honestly, I mean, I respect
it taking care of your brain health and stuff like that,
but uh, it does look a little funny. I mean,
(11:27):
your head looks extra big out there.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Extra big. My daughter Cedric Wilson over Miami had that
thing on. I said, Bro, I know you lean into
the left.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Yeah, I mean we all have it in practice, but
to see it in the game, it's kind of funny,
no doubt.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
I don't know what has to change. I'm trying to
get this guardian cap off. I'm trying to be the fastest,
lightest possible. But I get why I don't even take
during games. Bro, I don't believe in it, Like I'm
built off of showing no weakness.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah, and so I see, I see you must come
from that old school era. Man. I don't take my
ankles or nothing like barely risk tape.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, I got a flex tape if if I got
a sprain ankle, Like nah, I don't even want that
for real, for real?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
How do you? How do you? How do you like
the team? How's the locker room?
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Amazing?
Speaker 4 (12:12):
Man, It's it's really been a special Like not even
to try to blow gas or anything like that. Like
I've been in the league long enough, I've seen so
many different locker rooms, even in the same on the
same team, you know, I've been on you know, every year.
We said, we say this, like even if you have
the same coaching staff, same players coming back, it's a
new locker room every year, regardless of where you're at.
(12:32):
And it's just really special here right now. I think
we're just all bought in to the mission. We're bought
into like working hard. I think like because we work
so hard and prepare so hard, we're going into games
with just so much belief. And you know, even like
an example of that is like, you know, when when
stuff goes bad, like when momentum is not swinging our
(12:54):
way in the game, like I don't see a single person,
I don't feel the energy crack like anything like that
on the sideline. And I've been on teams where you know,
we're losing a lot. We may have a team, we
may have a lead on a team in one of
these games, but then as soon as the momentum shifts,
you could feel the belief in the team kind of
just just flatten out, like leave the building and on
(13:18):
teams that you know are used to losing pretty much,
but you know, it's not like that here, and this
is just really special. We're having fun, We're shadow boxing
in the locker room, we're playing cards on the plane rides,
and you know, having fun with the coaches. The coaches
are messing well with the players. It's just it's a
really special environment.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
I'll say, in the way y'all play, it looks like
it outside looking in. I mean, you've been on the Giant,
So before you got to Seattle, would you said this
is one of the better teams you've been on?
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Yeah, I would say I would say this is probably
the best team I've been a part of. I play
with some great players, possible Hall of Fame players, play
with some great coaches. You know, I'm not trying to
knock anywhere I've been, but this is I would say,
like one of the best teams because we're good in
all phases. We have a great special teams, we have
(14:05):
great offense, great defense, I've been a part of some
great defense where sometimes we're on the sideline, we get
a three play breather and we got to go right
back out there because the offense isn't getting it done.
Whereas here, you know, we're come out the field and
we have all the complimentary football, colimentary football at its finest, fine,
and defense is flying around. I mean, I mean we're
(14:27):
competing to be like the headhunters on the on the defense,
and it's like there's so many guys to compete with
on every level.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
It's like our.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Linebacker, secondary, d line, It's like we're competing with a
lot of guys and it's it's pretty it's pushing us
to be so great.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
You six five, You got Reek Woodland over there.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
At six four, You got to corner at six four
out there flying around? What they hell like, how's this
juggernaut out here moving that fast? But I mean that's man,
that's I know, it's got to be an exciting time
for you. Just again, I don't even want to harp
on it, but going from the Giants to the Seahawks,
that trade that happened, Bro, I was like, ain't no way,
(15:07):
Like I'm all about loyalty and I've only been with
one team, so I'm just how is it moving?
Speaker 1 (15:11):
How is it like? What has that trade done for
you in your career?
Speaker 2 (15:13):
You talk about the locker room vibes, you know, when
you were on losing teams versus now you're walking with
utmost confidence. How was that transition because then you you know,
last year Pro Bowl. Now we know you as Leo
the multiple Pro bowler. You know that you are set
for another Pro Bowl type season this year.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
But what was that? What was that trade like for you?
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I mean, I would say it's definitely interesting because, like
you said, I'm a loyal person too. When I'm when
I'm on a team, regardless of we're doing bad or not,
I'm like, Okay, even if we're doing bad, I'm like, Okay,
I want to be here to help turned around. I
want to be here to be like, Okay, we came
from the bottom, now we're here type of thing.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
You know.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Yeah, and uh, you know, I'm a loyal dude, and
you know at the time it was tough to get traded,
but I think it was for the better of both sides,
you know. I think they were in a rebuilding phase.
They needed to like look forward to the future. And
I think at the time, the Seahawks were number one
in the division when Pete traded for me, and they
were trying to make a push for the playoffs, which
we didn't end up going. But I think it was
(16:11):
just a blessing for me to just have a fresh start,
new home. We got Mike McDonald pretty much right after.
I've only played eight games here, and then they signed
me right after they signed Mike McDonald, And you know,
I got to meet Mike a little bit and just
realized that he was a defensive genius, defensive guru, just
(16:33):
a defensive minded guy. So I'm just like, Okay, it's obviously,
you know, as a defensive player, it's special to have
a head coach who cares about the defense so much.
And I mean, I would just say, like, it's been
a long time coming. You know, I've been in the
league for a long time and I've been losing for
a long time, so it feels like, you know, all
(16:53):
that hard work, effort, just dedication to this game, to
the league is fun on the paying off.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Many Yeah, that's like I said so far to here,
especially when you love to hear when players actually like
really ride for their coach, you know, like yeah, and
they have a head coach that actually loves a defense
a completely different feel.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Which one do you prefer?
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Because I'm sort of I'm sort of on the fence.
I'm like, I'm actually okay with my head coach. Don't
give a damn about us, like you know, like only
socials when.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
We mess up.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yeah, because like sometimes it is tough that like he's
in the defensive meeting room all the time because I'm like,
all right here, man, man watching all the time, choices. Yeah,
But at the same time, it's like he values me
as one of the top players on the team. I'm
one of the top players on the defense, and uh,
(17:44):
he puts me in positions to be great, and you know,
he pushed me in positions to lead as well. And uh,
it's definitely a lot of mutual respect. I respect the
hell out of Mic, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
I say, look, you gotta have your leaders actually lead.
It's hard to lead when you're like you're like, oh, hey, man, dude,
it's just lead by lead by your words. Now, it's
got to be by by walk, It got to be
by all all walks of life.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
I mean, Seattle's a big place too. I mean New York. Look,
you know New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
It takes you thirty minutes to drive around, like the
entire city Seattle. Seattle sort of big family.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Had a little sleepy town though. I would say that's
a big difference too. Like when I was in New York,
it was like, you know, we were close, we had
close teammates and stuff that we like went out all
the time and hung out at restaurants and went to
shows and live shows and plays and all that type
of stuff. Whereas here, like we're really close in the building,
but it's just a sleepy city. It's like it's dark
(18:40):
all the time. It's rainy as gloomy, gloomy, but we're
not really hanging out outside of football that much. Besides, tonight,
we're about to go see my boy Daved Chappelle.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
That's man, that's that sounds fire like said, you know,
that's one of the best comedians of all times. The
Chappelle show alone is gonna like stay in the anmals
of time of the craziness that set up everything else.
We'll be right back now. I mean, now you labeled
a d you know, your defensive end. You've started off
as a big D tackle defensive end. You know, at
(19:10):
this point you can probably play outside linebacker. I've gone
from D been labeled DT for a second. I said,
I'm not that, you know, and now I think I
just got labeled OLB for the first time in my career.
I'm like, look at me, hybrid Titan, Like, how do
you how do you feel like being able to be
able to play so many different positions?
Speaker 3 (19:28):
I mean, I love being able to be a hybrid.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
I think it's what's been able to you know, It's
what stood out about me during the draft. It's what's
been able to you know. I've been able to play
all up and down the line. Coaches like to put
me like over the tackle sometimes to help stop the
run or get certain pass rush ops, same vice versa.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
On the inside.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
But uh, you know what that comes hard stuff too,
Like I think I'm personally a D tackle. Actually, I
play most of my snaps at three technique. Yeah, most
of my rushes are from the three technique. I'm getting
double team like a three technique. I'm not rushing out
here on the edge like a guy like Miles Garrett.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
T J. Watt type of guy.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
I'm more of a three technique Russian, you know, So,
like sometimes it's kind of a hard balance because I
want to be a hybrid. I want to be able
to help my team and play along the line, play
you know, play the piano down the line, but personally.
But then sometimes it hurts when pro bo votes happen
because like even this year, like the first week of voting,
(20:28):
they had me listed as a d N and my
stats don't really quite align with.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
D ns that.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Yeah, but when you put me as a d tackle,
I'm you know, top three, top five d tackle when
it comes to the three technique positions, So you know,
I eventually got that switched over, luckily, so they have
me listed as a detach tackle.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Yeah, okay, I'll tell you that that that that one.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Little thin little it makes a difference, man.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Makes a huge difference from guys that are rushing from
that nine SEVENS versus four I three I two I.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Yeah, we are not the same.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, I'm
three fifteen, you know, I'm I'm plugging gaps, playing double
teams in the inside. Yeah, rushing from the three technique spot,
I'm not just blazing on the on the edge, and
it's different.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
Those guys get a lot more sacks.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
I'd be remissing. We look, we talked about you being
from USC. Take it back to the college days. How
do you feel about you know that that packed twelve,
packed with PAC ten?
Speaker 1 (21:26):
I was the last pack ten.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
So PAC twelve? Are you twelve? When I was?
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Yeah, so so PAC twelve for you? Now they're in
the Big ten, big big ten? Like that's what ce see?
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Is it twelve?
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Now?
Speaker 1 (21:38):
I don't know? You tell me there's two of them.
I know, I know cows in the a CC.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
You know, you know USC and U c l A
love over to the Big ten. So I'm not sure
that makes it big twelve.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
No, no, big twelve is is a different conference? Both of
them can't count. But yeah, uh so you were in
the Big ten? Like how is it?
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Does it?
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Does it a fa? The way you look at it?
Like USC used to be a part of the West Coast.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Yeah you're opponent and now you ever, you're traveling towards Ohio,
you know, Ohio State, and you're having to go play
Michigan or whatever that is. How do you how do
you feel about it.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
I mean, it's definitely interesting to make a big move
like that. Right away.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
I just knew we were gonna have to build in
the trenches if we're gonna go play over there in
the Big Turn. They got the big country, strong boys
on the Yeah. And we're used to playing, you know
that wide open offenses, you know, like Oregon and stuff
like that.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
On the West Office, the line that can move, Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
So you know, being on the you know, playing in
the part twelve, we were used to being more speed oriented,
more skill oriented, versus like being in the Big ten.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
You gotta gotta be a little slower, lay bigger.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Yeah, that's what.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
And uh, you know, I feel like we've been doing
decent this year. You know, besides that lost to Illinois,
there's been a few, you know, losses that you know,
I wish we could have got back. But overall, I
think we're we're grown in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Yeah, I mean, are you tracking them? Look, I'm not.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
I tracked my team relatively, like like I monitor room
until we lose about three, and then I'm like.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
Once we lose three, I'm like damp saying, So, I mean,
I'm so far removed at this point. I've been away
from USC for eleven years. I want to go back
at some point. I've been talking to them. We do
this thing where they bring back you know, the old
alum and old you know, we run the guys out
of the tunnel and stuff like that. So I'm looking
forward to doing that at some point, maybe next year
(23:36):
if I get the bye week that aligns with it.
But yeah, I keep track a little bit. But like
you said, once we once we lose and we're like
out of the playoffs or something, it's kind of it's
kind of hard to follow.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
No doubt. So you are you in or out on
this Lincoln Riley era? You're in?
Speaker 1 (23:51):
You got to be in.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
I'm in. I'm in.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
Our receiver, you know, we've got like a top five
receiver right now. Quarterbacks pretty good. Yeah, I don't know
too much us besides us.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Look, cal just got got a new head coach in
Tash Lupoy, who played at Cal back.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
In the day.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
And I'm all excited now, Like I'm like, I'm all
back in now, I said, Tosh lu Boy back, we
got we got one of the big greats. Okay, we
got a Calbert being a calber again. You know, we
got Robberia as a GM. I said, I said, we
might be a real you know, we might be putting
it together.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
YEA, Now I don't.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
I still can't sit right there. We're in the a CC.
We're a West.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
Coast, a Pacific north West Coast teams Oakland area, and
we we played people like Duke.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
I mean, this is this whole nil thing. I mean,
I understand it and respected. I was a broke kid
in college and I went to USC.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
I'm not trying to hear that. I don't believe you.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
It was after Reggie Bush though they were on a
tight leash at that point. Everybody was like, I know
you took money, yes, but I'm like even I'm even
even hearing a teams are pulling out of bowl games
and stuff right now. So it's like, you see that
there's a lot of funny stuff happening in college football
right now.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
Notre Dame, huh.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Notre Dame was like, you know what, I still like,
I still don't understand how Notre Dame USC is a
rival situation. I want to ask that it'd be yeah,
but like Notre Dame pulls out a bowl game I'm like, yo,
for if you're.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
A senior and listen, your last year, you're gonna pull
out a.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Bowl game like I wanted to playing bowl games, like
we fought for that.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Yeah, exactly. I don't college nothing.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Man, you see, you see the message is that s
posed to teach anybody something like, yo, it's okay, like
you didn't make it, Okay, go to a bowl game
and show out.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
That's that's some of the last film kids are going
to have. Not even makes it to the league.
Speaker 4 (25:43):
And plus those are like core memories I think, as yeah,
like you said, nobody makes it. Not everybody makes it
to the league, and like I mean, those are still
to this day for me, core memories of going to
bowl games and the city taking care of the team
and doing all the events and shows and stuff like
that with the team, and you know, your last little
you know, chance to show scouts what you have as
a senior.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
You know, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
That's like, that's like, that's like guys often now the
Senior Bowl. If I get that invite, I'm in there.
But I also, you know, maybe maybe it was me.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
I also just thought like I was better than everybody,
So I was like now I'm gonna put this on display.
You know college, when you when you top tier, you
know you top tier and you're like, bro, I don't
care who's in front of me.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Come get some work.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
And not built the same man man.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
You know, and I get it too, Like if you
if you supposed to be a locked in top ten,
you know what I can understand protecting the investment. I
thought I was locked in top fifteen. I slid twenty four.
So oh well, you know they say they say it
don't matter where you get drafted. I think that's a
that's a sham. But let's say it does. It always
matters where you get draft, Like that's that's people that
(26:49):
haven't got drafted, or say that everybody has opportunity.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Sure you can get an opportunity, but if you're a
first rounder, your team wants you to succeed.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
Yeah, your team wants you to prove like, hey, this
is the guy that I chose, looking him work.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Now you have to do all the work, but you're getting.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
More chances than that fifth round whatever, sixth round defensive
been in the same position.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Yeah, I think you're right.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Like that label kind of stays with you throughout your
career that you were a first rounder. Even when it
comes to contract negotiations, it's like, you know, once you
become a first rounder, your contracts is just going to
be in a different bracker than guys who are you know,
third fourth or lower.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
You know, yeah, immediately like, hey, like we we like
we like paying our guys to show loyalty towards you know,
are not only our fan base, but our players as well.
I think it goes hand in hand. But like I said,
this nil landscape is changing, it's changed.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
I found out I found out a receiver in Ohio
State is getting paid more than Jackson Smith this year,
and I was like, it's kind of crazy.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
No, that's wild. Yeah, he's going crazy.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
NFL the league is getting paid less than in college with.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Man, hey, god is good the money on right there.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
I mean that that that alone man to be to
be in college and not have to worry about like
picking up a job or two, it would have been nice,
really nice. I don't know if I would have ended
up in the league, though you would gave you would
have gave me four million dollars as an eighteen year
old bro. That would have changed everything. But like you,
I remember what I was five hundred twenty five hundred.
(28:24):
I was bowling.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Yeah, for real, you know if you clear, you clear?
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Rent was like a band in the bay, you know,
so that's a band out. It was only getting a
band in. So I had I had a cop a
second job. At one point, I had two real jobs.
I was so I was a peer advisor as well
as a as a security bouncer.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
Hey, I mean broy them.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
Clubs, them clubes paying like twenty five dollars cash. You
know what I'm saying, minimum nine hours. I said, yeah,
we'll be here in off season. Don worry about a trail,
no paper trails, which I'm sure he got fire for that.
But hey, we was we was working, working, But I
mean we were trapping in college, man for sure. Man,
just hey, try to thunk this one now. And now
the boys is out there making that money on damn
(29:12):
damn a rent? They paying condos?
Speaker 3 (29:15):
About that?
Speaker 1 (29:16):
It's hey, it's living a dream.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Uh. The last couple of questions I have for you,
I messed up and talked about trading cards.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
But does that mean you an anime guy? And if so,
what you watch it?
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Yeah? I am into anime too. My favorite anime I
think of all time.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Might be don't you do it? No.
Speaker 4 (29:37):
One Piece is up there, It's in my top three,
but I think my number one is Attack on tight End. Okay,
the story, the storyline, character development, all that type of stuff.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Bring me Levi Ackerman. Yeah, yeah, I'm good with it.
I see I look, bro like I'm I'm I'm here
for anything with hands.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
You don't like you don't like one pieceuf, bro, come.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
On, my only my only problem is the anime. And
to start, One Piece is so trash.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
It's old, right, I mean I would rather watch dragon
Ball back in the Gap than One Piece, Like it's
like it was not it was like it's like it's
like South Park level animation in the beginning, and the
storyline is so mid until.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
It is so dragged out.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
That's all these all these filler episodes, like.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Yeah, it's a lot of felling when people right.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Now though, sure, bro, the the legend goes, you have
to watch like two hundred episodes before it gets good.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Kiss my one fight last three seasons.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
But you know what, I used to run home to
dragon Ball Z and that used to keep me off
the edge of my seat.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Like, no, I gotta go see him. He about to
go to work on freezer. You about to fight sale,
He about to fight boo.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
You've never said that one time about one piece And
for the first couple of hundred episodes.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
Now that he's on like year five, I'm like, yo,
it's too late.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
I'm out.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
I'm out. Yeah, absolutely, you know, uh.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
I've got kids, So like now they just started watching
my reincarnated life as a slime.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
These jokers are hooked.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
I don't know that one.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
You know what I'm saying that as long as there's hands,
I'm about it.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
So we're watching together, you know what I'm saying, Like,
I could care less if it's rocky, if it's animation, like.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Is another one of my favorite two actual The first
is short. It's short, but it's to the point.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
The first season.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
I like both.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
Hell, the second season, I can get you. It's like
it's slowed down. He becomes like a farmer stuff. But
it's like the whole, like the source of plowshare story.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
I like, no, I see, I'm not here for that.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
The first season, I said, oh, I said, I can't
wait for the second season. Putting hands on people. He
think he baki himas switched up. Now we all interpret
like this life aspect of like being better. No, I'm out.
I'm out.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Hey if I would, if I wanted you to be introspected,
I go pick up a Paul Quayler book. You know
what I'm saying, Like man, just turning the alchemist out here.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
But so I way deep in animal. Yeah, give me
your top three you said it was.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
I would say attack on Titan one, pieces number two
and then just because of nostalgia and kind of what
got me into it is No. No, I know, I
know is a little mainstream, but I feel like it's
mainstream for a reason. It's it's legit.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Hey, I'm okay with mainstream. I started off. I started
off with Gunnam Wing back in the Gap.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
You know what I'm saying, Like my older cousins watching it,
I said, oh, dang, they fighting in space.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
I need that.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
Yeah, as long as they got hands. I'm not here
to argue. Man, Like I said, I appreciate. I appreciate you.
Oh that's right.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
You do you have a kid coming?
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Yeah? Yeah, we're expecting in March.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
Oh yeah, I see I seen that on I g
I said, day said, boy just got married.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
I said, okay, grow up. But you know I finally
made it.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Hey, man, congratulations, I'm not eve gonna ask if it's
a boy a girl yet.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
I'm just gonna pray as a boy. We're not going
to find out. Actually, so yeah, okay, Bakers Born, I
love it.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
All you can do is pray for play for a
healthy kid. I needed.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
I needed to know my first one. I was like, yo,
moment she was prayed, I said, Yo, what can we
get this blood test? Like I need to know, I said, boy,
I need to know it's a boy. Right once, we
had a boy. The next three after that, I was like, yo, whatever,
as long as God bless them with health. Like I'm
not tripping.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
I got four. I got one boy, and then I
was like, I was like, man, make men.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
The first yeah, girls.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
And I got more.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
I got more love than I've ever needed. Bro, I said,
every every man deserves a girl. But yeah, sure, what
did I doss?
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Big big blessed?
Speaker 3 (33:41):
Well.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
I appreciate you stopping by the pod.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
It's nothing, nothing but but hopefully positive going into this
this uh playoffs for you. I can't you know, I
only want Black and Gold win a Super Bowl. So
I can't say you do that, but I'm gonna.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Wish you well.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
Appreciate you man.
