Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey there, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It is Thursday, April twenty seventh, and welcome to a
bonus edition of the NFL Fantasy Football Podcast.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
It's Me Your Man, m P. Marcus Grant, joined by
Michael F. Flooria.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
We sits in our respective homes just a few minutes
after the ending of Round one of the twenty twenty
three NFL Draft, and Mike, I don't know your immediate thoughts.
There were some things that were expected early on, but
I feel like midway through this round things kind of
went sideways winded with a lot of surprises.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
In Round one, Yeah, we certainly did.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I was very happy to see a certain quarterback go
to the landing spot. I was hoping he would. But
besides that, my biggest takeaway, especially in the second half
of the draft, is like, why do teams just let
how Roseman just dominate the draft every single year?
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Why why I keep saying this.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
If I am a GM and the caller ID says
Howie Roseman, I'm letting it ring through the voicemail because
nothing good is going to happen for me. If Howie
Roseman is calling, I don't understand it. You know, I
know we're not going to talk a lot of defense,
but you know what, I respect the fact that basically
the Eagles looked at the University of Georgia and is like,
(01:28):
you know what, they've got the best defense in the
country the last two or three years running. Let's just
do that, and they just go out and get all
these guys. I was sort of joking that, you know,
the Eagles, they got that dog in them, that Georgia
bulldog in them. They really just loaded up. I'm amazed
that teams keep letting this happen. The Eagles had on
(01:50):
paper the best roster top to bottom last year. I
know they didn't win the Super Bowl, but top to bottom,
I thought they had the best roster in the league.
And you know, Night won. The instant action is that
they went out and they crushed again. I just don't
know how teams let this happen. I just don't.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
I tweeted it like four times. They have the best
chance to make the Super Bowl, like, maybe not to
win it, but look at the AFC and only quarterbacks
and then just look at the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Path, right, I mean to go through the NFC. Look,
I mean, look, I get it. The division may be
a little bit tough. They got to deal with the
Cowboys a couple of times a year. They got to deal,
you know, with the Giants. I'm sure there's a chance
they may run across the forty nine ers or someone
like that again, but they are the deepest team in
the NFC without a doubt on paper, and it's just
a matter of sort of putting it together right there.
(02:38):
So we're jumping in here with sort of a bonus
podcast to recap the first round.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
From a fantasy perspective.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Hit some of the more interesting picks, the ones that
are more fantasy relevant. But I want to start with
some non draft news specifically, But what was the biggest
news of the day before the picks started coming in.
The Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson have agreed to a deal.
(03:06):
It is five years, two hundred and sixty million dollars
for Lamar Jackson. It includes one hundred and eighty five
million dollars in guarantees. The deal makes Jackson currently the
highest paid player international football league. So not long after
(03:26):
we salve the Aaron Rodgers dilemma, we also saw the
Lamar Jackson dilemma. So all the quarterbacks are now in
the Barn. Everything is sealed up in that regard, and
so I know we'll get into what happened in the
draft a little bit later, but just your first takeaways
when you.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Saw the deal, I mean, how'd you feel for Lamar?
How does this? What does this mean for the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
I was so happy for Lamar Jackson after everything he's
kind of the back and forth with him and the
Ravens for the last couple of seasons. It's been no
surprise or secret. I guess us on this podcast. Our
team Lamar, We're team player on this podcast. So very
happy to see him get paid, and even more so,
(04:09):
I'm happy that he kind of shoved it in the
faces of everyone who said, oh, if he had an
age and none of this would happen. You know who
was his agent, It was basically.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Jalen Hurts, Like, Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Signed this contract, and Lamar was like, I will sign
that deal, give me one million more per year. And
that's exactly what happened.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Basically is what happened. I mean, sort of the way
it has worked over the last few years is that
a quarterback signs and then whoever's next in line sort
of resets the market again. And you're talking about a
guy who said this plenty of times. He's twenty six
years old, he's a former league MVP, He's had plenty
of success on the field, and yes, Jalen Hurts was
amazing last year. But this is a guy still very
(04:51):
much in the early part of his career, still sort
of proving himself in a lot of ways, whereas Lamar
Jackson has already gotten that done. So I'm thrilled to
see this happen. I feel like, you know, the two
sides sort of needed each other. I think I think
the Ravens probably needed Lamar even more than Lamar needed
the Ravens. He could have gone any number of places
and still been successful. If Lamar Jackson leaves Baltimore, that
(05:13):
team is in a world of trouble. I mean, I know,
we jokingly talk about Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley, but
nobody really believes that if the Ravens had to go
into the season with Tyler Huntley is their quarterback, that
they were poised to do anything special. So they bring
in Lamar Jackson. The next question is would they get
him some help? And we'll get to that in just
(05:35):
a little bit. So let's turn our attention to what
happened in Night one of the NFL Draft. We'll start
at the top where the first two picks. I don't
think any surprise at all, Mike. Bryce Young goes number
one to the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Stroud goes number two to the Houston Texans. I'm this
is sort of what we talked about. I know I
said that I thought maybe CJ. Stroud would go first.
I thought Bryce Young should have been the first pick.
It turns out he was. Your takeaways from those first
two picks in the.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Draft, Yeah, out of those two, I definitely would have
had Bryce Young as my first overall pick as well.
And Bryce Young is a playmaker.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Look.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
I know the knock on him his size, but when
I watched a lot of his college games, I didn't
see his size hold him.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Back at all.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Like the only thing I saw is he takes maybe
a step or two back deeper in the pocket than
most quarterbacks. His throwing motion makes him seem bigger than
he is. And I know there's a lot of concerns
about can he hold up to taking hits and the
NFL level, And I understand why because of his size,
(06:44):
But again, when I watched this guy play one, his
vision and his peripheral vision is insane, like he always
knows where everyone is at all times. And then I
don't think a defender who's the first defender to get
through has ever actually touched him. Like he's so quick
and elusive, and he's got this really great spin move.
I think he is a great pick at number one.
(07:06):
I think that he not only can read a defense
and everything make all the throws that you want, but
you now, I think in today's NFL need to be
able to be a playmaker and extend the plays with
your legs and then kind of improvise. We've seen Mahomes,
Russell Wilson, Josh Allen quarterbacks like that take that to
the next level, and I think Bryce Young has that
(07:28):
capability for fantasy purposes. For me, he's my rookie QB two,
and I think that he should be in like re
draft leagues, like a borderline low end quarterback two, somewhere
in like the QB like eighteen to twenty three range,
something like that. But I do think depending on how
much he runs, he does bring more upside than.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
That fantasy wise, his value is definitely speaking of Young,
his value is definitely greater in dynasty than it is
in redraft leagues this year, just because you look at
the rest of that team around him in Carolina and
it doesn't necessarily blow you away.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
You know, they went out.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
They added Adam Thielen, who in the past has been
a nice receiver but is on the downside part of
his career. I think we're still sort of hoping that
Terras Marshall Junior kind of turns into something. I mean,
DJ Chark has never really proven that he could stay
healthy and be a playmaker consistently. Miles Sanders a nice piece,
but not necessarily one that's going to kind of get
(08:28):
you over the hump.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
So it's like the Panthers.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
We talk about teams kind of having a bridge quarterback
or a stop gap at quarterback. It's almost like they
finally have gotten their quarterback and now they have a
lot of stop gaps on the skill position players on
the rest of the offense here. So there's not a
lot to get you super fired up about Bryce Young,
at least in twenty twenty three. Maybe down the road,
depending on what Carolina is able to do. Of course,
you know, we still have two more days of this draft.
(08:54):
There's still time for them to go out and add
to more pieces. But right now, I think Bryce Young's
value is greater in dynasty leagues than it is in
redraft leagues.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Stroud now going at number two to Houston, I think
it's sort of a similar situation. I don't know that
he's quite the playmaker that Young is, but he's a nice, steady,
solid option there. He's I think more of a pocket passer.
We saw what he did at Ohio State. Of course,
in Columbus, he had one of the greatest collections of
wide receivers anybody could ask for when you talk about
(09:27):
you know, in the last couple of years, Ohio States
had Garrett Wilson, Chris o'lave, Jackson Smith, and Jigba Marvin
Harrison Junior, who right now could probably be the number
one wide receiver in next year's draft when he's eligible.
So it's a little bit harder to evaluate him just
because of the talent around him. I think it's similar
to what we saw with you Mac Jones and a
(09:48):
lot of the Alabama quarterbacks previously, because they had so
much talented wide receiver. It was hard to evaluate, but
I think Stroud is a nice If I say safe pick,
it always sounds it always sounds like a back handed
cobl to say that somebody's a safe pick. But I
think he's kind of a safe pick because I think
he can be a solid guy, if not spectacular.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
But it's for me.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
It's it's similar to to Bryce Young Mike is that
they don't have a lot of pieces there in Houston.
Right now, Nicocollins.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Right now, is your your wide receiver? One.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I really thought, and you know, want to get your
take on this. I really thought that when the Texans
still had the twelfth pick that it would be nice
for them to draft Stroud and then wait and then
at number twelve go get Jackson Smith and Jigba reunite
the two guys from Ohio State. Instead, they trade that
pick and they move up and they get Will Anderson.
(10:40):
Oh yeah, remind John Metchi is coming back as well.
Thanks Ryan for the reminder. Missed all of last year
with leukemia, so hopefully he's healthy. Would be glad to
see him back on the field. Still, it's not enough
that really gets excited. I thought they'd go get JSN.
They got Will Anderson to give themselves a pass rusher here,
(11:00):
and I just worry that CJ. Stroud's gonna walk into
a situation he just doesn't have any weapons to throw to.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Yeah, and one shout out to Daniel Jeremiah who mocked
the Texans having the second and third pick. He knocked
that one out of the park. I was of the
same thinking of you as you, Marcus. I was like,
I think it's smart. We've seen more and more teams
start doing this where you pair like Joe Burrow and
Jamar Chase kind of started the trend about Tua and
(11:29):
Jalen Waddle. There's a number of cases out there where
a team has paired a young quarterback with their college
top receiver, and I think it's a smart play. Yeah,
that's the thing. Though I agree with everything you said.
I like CJ. Stroud as a prospect. I think he's
the safest bet of all of these quarterbacks. I don't
think he has the same ceiling as young with Richardson,
(11:51):
but I think he's got a much safer floor. No
one's gonna like confuse me with Like Daniel Jeremiah, I
haven't been doing this for like twenty thirty years, but
in the short time that that I've been like getting
really into scouting players for the draft.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
CJ.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Stroud is the best ball placement and touch of any
of the quarterbacks that I've watched this closely. But his
rushing ability, he has that ability. It's just a matter
of are we gonna see it because we really didn't
see it a whole lot in college and then they
played Georgia and he ran all over them. But I
agree with you the two concerns I had with him
were one, while he didn't wasn't under pressure a whole
(12:29):
lot in college, he did struggle when he was under pressure.
And then it's not a knock on the Texans wide
receiver room. That Ohio State receiver room would be better
than a lot of NFL wide receiver rooms. So but
he's going from having the unquestioned arguably the best college
wide receiver room in history to to, like you said,
Nico Collins, John Metchi, Dalton Schultz, like it's solid. But
(12:53):
because of that, I think CJ. Stroud for me, he'd
be in my in rookie drafts, he'd be my QB three.
But for like redrafter or twenty twenty three purposes. I
think he's more of like a borderline QB two or three.
I'd rather have Young, I'd rather have Richardson, But I
do think there's there is upside with him.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
There's upside, but I think in redraft leagues, I'm probably staying.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Away from CJ.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Stroud right now just because I'm not excited about what
is around him down there in Houston. But the guy
who is everybody's rookie dynasty rookie QB one, especially in
superflex leagues, it happened. It's not very often that we
get what we ask for, but in this case, it happens.
Anthony Richardson goes to the Indianapolis Colts with the number
(13:42):
four pick. I was on another live stream at the
time when it happened, and immediately everybody kind of started
sweating because the idea of Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor
in the same backfield, it feels like a lot. It
feels great, it feels amazing. I mean, I don't know
that we could have asked for a better landing spot
for Anthony Richardson and going to an Indianapolis team that
(14:05):
while it's not great, there's at least something there to
get excited about, which is what we are struggling to
say with Bryce Young and CJ.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Stroud.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Yeah, Anthony Richardson too. The Colts was my dream fantasy scenario,
and I know I'm not the only one, but I
had been wish casting it all day on Twitter and
stuff like that. And yeah, like you said, one, he's
got Jonathan Taalorvan that's gonna help take pressure away from
him to Michael Pittman Junior is a really good wide receiver.
(14:34):
But Shane Styke and is the head coach there, and
we saw what he was able to work with Jalen
Hurts and Philly not giving him all of the credit,
but obviously a big part of it. And they turned
Jalen Hurts from a quote unquote project into well, I
guess only for like five days, he was the highest
page of the NFL, which is pretty remarkable. And the
(14:54):
thing that I keep saying when it comes to fantasy
with Anthony Richardson, I don't care how bad passer you
think he is. I think he's much better than he
gets credit for, and I think he should start week one.
He can't learn anything from Gardner Minshew.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
He's already better than Gardner Minshew.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
But I use Justin Fields as the example of why
I'm so excited for Anthony Richardson. Last year, he was
the worst pass EPA by far in the NFL. He
threw for two two and forty two yards and seventeen
touchdowns over the course of the full season, and yet
he was the overall QB six and the QB five
(15:32):
in points per game, and for a stretch of the
season he was a cheat code QB one that if
you didn't if you had him, you were probably running
through your league at that time. Because of what he
does with his legs. I think Anthony Richardson joins Jalen Hurts,
Lamar Jackson Justin Fields as the best rushing quarterbacks in
the NFL. And it's why he's my my QB one
(15:53):
in dynasty. Like you said, I also think in redrafts
he should be a top twenty quarterback off the board.
And while he's gonna to be a QB two drafted,
he brings weekly QB one upside every single week.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
I mean, I think when you talk about him on
a weekly basis in redraft leagues, he gives you that
same sort of floor that you had with say, Justin
Fields last year. It's what you had with Jalen Hurts
a couple of years ago. Well, we still weren't sure
how those guys are going to be his passers. We
knew that every single week they had that rushing upside
and that's what gave them viability. And it's why last
(16:25):
year Justin Fields really was a great fantasy quarterback without
being a great passer in Chicago, because he was able
to give you those rushing yards and then he was
just good enough as a thrower to kind of sort
of make up for it. Richardson sort of has that
same mold to him, right he is there are things
about his passing ability that need to be worked on.
It's not insurmountable, but he does need to work on
(16:48):
some things. But we know he can run with the football.
If he gives you, say, eight nine hundred yards on
the ground, if he can supplement that with another couple
thousand through the air, some decent touchdown number, as long
as he's not terrible with turnovers, he really does have
the potential to be a top twelve fantasy quarterback this year.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
I don't know that you're gonna get.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
The same level of discount with him that you did,
say with Justin Fields a year ago. But I think
there are enough people who were worried about him as
a passer that maybe he doesn't come flying off the boards.
I think you can still sort of draft him in
the mid to late rounds and end up with a really,
really good quarterback fantasy wise. Again, I think this is
where you got to separate the real football from the
(17:30):
fantasy football, because I think there are things about him
that need work, But fantasy wise, I think he's gonna
be He's gonna be really really good this year. And
that is why, as you mentioned, he is the Dynasty
rookie quarterback number one without a whole lot of debate,
to be honest with you. So this is when things
(17:55):
got sort of interesting. Anthony Richardson comes off the board
at four, then at number eight Bjon Robinson, and there
had been plenty of debate in the last week about
whether or not it made sense to take a running
back this high in the draft. Obviously, you have sort
of the positional value people, a lot of the analytics
people who turn their nose up at taking a running
(18:17):
back to this early because statistically it just never really
works out. There is another school of thought that says,
you know what, you have a player this talented to
hell with positional value. You take this guy and you
figure out how to make it work.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
Well.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Apparently the Falcons fall into that second camp because they
take Bjon Robinson at number eight. Now, as we were
talking earlier, I saw this tweet come across my timeline
and it was from Arthur Smith, not from Arthur Smith,
but about Arthur Smith via de Orlando Ledbetter from the
Advantage Journal constitution saying Falcons coach Arthur Smith described Tyler
(18:53):
al Jeer as a sledgehammer and Bjeon Robinson as a
contact balance guy Florida. We all believe that Bijon is
swallow hard here generational talent. You know, as much as
people hate that phrase generational talent, that wherever he goes,
he was going to be the RB one and in theory,
(19:15):
is going to dominate the touches. Is Arthur Smith going
to do this to us again? Is he going to
take another top level elite college prospect and either put
him in a committee or just not give him a
ton of touches? We are still we're still shook over
what happened with Kyle Pitts.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
He can't do this again to us with Jon Robinson right.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
If anyone could do it, it would be Arthur Smith.
But I even and if you listen to the show
during the season, you know how you know about my
disdain for Arthur Smith. Even, I would be completely shocked
if he pulled that stunt again. I mean, look, Tyler
Reill's year was really really good last year. But he's
(20:00):
a fifth round rookie, a fifth round pick, and you
already had him on your roster. You let him run
for a thousand yards and then you said, you know what,
let's use our eighth overall pick with all the holes
that we have on this roster. On a running back,
I'm convinced that Bijon is about to just run wild
and potent. I tweeted it out. I would not be
(20:23):
shocked if he led the league in rushing in his
first year, Like, I think he's that good. And I
think Arthur Smith wants to run the ball that much.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
He really does want to run the ball.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
And I've heard penal people say that it's in the
range of outcomes for Bejon Robinson to be the RB
one at the end of the year, simply because he's
going to get that kind of volume. The talent level
is certainly there. And look, I understand the argument in
terms of what the Falcons needed and all the different
things that they needed to fix on this roster, that
(20:53):
taking a running back, no matter how good he is,
at number eight, probably wasn't the best use of their assets.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
But for fantasy, we don't really care about that.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
I mean, we just know that we have a really
great running back that landed in a situation where they
want to run the football and he's likely to get
a ton of opportunity there. Look, I think people were
gonna draft Bijon high anyway, but this might been one
of the best case scenarios for him in terms of
where he possibly could have landed.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
So he's at eight.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
There was talk that we could get two running backs
off the board in the first round. I don't think
anybody thought we were gonna get two running backs in
the top twelve because at number twelve, the Detroit Lions
go with Jamir Gibbs. And you want to talk about
just a timeline that slot machine. When Jamiir Gibbs got picked.
It was a combination of Oh no, Lions, what are
(21:45):
you doing? Oh no, Jamiir Gibbs, Oh no, DeAndre Swift.
I mean, there was just a lot of head scratching
and confusion. Gibbs is an amazing talent, a guy who
you know, you keep hearing the name Alvin Kamara come
up when people talk about Jamior Gibbs. But this one,
it just didn't make a lot of sense because DeAndre
(22:08):
Swift is there, because David Montgomery is there. If you
have any clarity as to how this happened and what
this means, please enlighten me.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
No, I don't.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
A team like the Lions.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
I thought they were set on offense and they were
gonna load up on defense and just kind of try
to win their division this year. But the only thing
I can my biggest takeaway, and I know I'm not
the only one to say it, is like DeAndre Swift
probably not a member of the Detroit Lions. Maybe by
the end.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Of the draft.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
I would be shocked week one if he's like he's
kind of been falling out of favor with his coaching staff,
especially last year, like when he was in and out
of the lineup constantly, and I so my thinking was,
if they get rid of Swift, they've built this backfield
to be a better version of what it was a
year ago. Because as much as I like DeAndre Swift,
(23:01):
he was not available all year, and when he was,
they were very managing his touches a whole lot. Gibbs
could be everything that Swift was in that offense, a
great receiver, a weapon, not a running back, because I
don't think he's ever gonna get you know, fifteen to
twenty carries a game, but he could get something like
ten carries and I don't know anywhere up to ten
(23:23):
targets per game. He's that good of a weapon. And
then you have David Montgomery be the power back to
between the tackles, back the goal line, back what Jamal
Williams role was. But I think David Montgomery is an upgrade,
at least a slight one over Jamal Williams. But if
you're going in with all three of these, then that
pick makes even less sense. The other thing I guess
(23:45):
to defend the Detroit Lions is, look, I know they
already had two running backs and they took another one.
But you can make the case that they came away
from this year's draft and last year's draft with the
most explosive offensive prospect in the class.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
I mean, you look at Jamison Williams and I know
he's gonna miss the first six games of the season,
but still was arguably the most explosive wide receiver before
that knee injury. Now you get Jamior Gibbs to sort
of add to it. They do add some firepower to
this offense. But right now we're all just sort of
left waiting what happens in the backfield.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
And I want to believe, I know a lot of
people want to believe.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
That something's going to happen with DeAndre Swift, that they're
going to trade him, whether it's this weekend or sometime
just after. But I just I can't imagine they're going
to go into the season with these three running backs altogether. Again,
it just doesn't really make sense. And if that's the case,
then suddenly this becomes just a muddled mess of a
running back situation in Detroit. I think we were all
(24:48):
hoping for different circumstances for Jamior Gibbs. I know you
and I talked about the idea of the Kansas City
Chiefs potentially calling, but I don't think anybody saw the line,
and I don't think anybody saw Gibbs off the board
in the first twelve picks, So we had two running
backs go off the board before we had any pass catchers,
(25:11):
no wide receivers, no tight ends, and then all of
a sudden, everything kind of went nuts for the pass catchers.
We went on a run of four wide receivers in
a row, and if I remember correctly, I believe this
is the first time in the modern draft era that
four wide receivers have gone consecutively. So at number twenty,
(25:32):
the first wide receiver taken Jackson Smith Injigma, no surprise
that he was the first one. He goes to Seattle.
The very next pick at twenty one, Quinton Johnston goes
to the LA Chargers. At twenty two, Zay Flowers to
the Baltimore Ravens, and at number twenty three, Jordan Addison
goes to the Minnesota Vikings. Of those four, which is
(25:52):
the one that excites you the most.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
So it's pretty funny because the order they win in
is the order that I had them ranked, So you
would think, like jaysn excited me the most, but it's
the opposite. Like my number four ranked receiver was Jordan Addison,
But for fantasy purposes, I think he needs to be
the rookie number one wide receiver, at least for twenty
twenty three purposes, because the other three all are probably
(26:20):
the third target in their offense. Like as much as
I like jaysn and I think long term he's a
great fit for Seattle, He's not gonna out if all healthy.
He's not gonna out target DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett,
Zay Flowers isn't gonna out target Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.
I'm sorry, Quentin Johnson isn't gonna out target those guys.
(26:40):
Jay Flowers isn't gonna out target Mark Andrews. And then
there's also Rashad Bateman and Odell Beckham, whereas Jordan Addison
falls in to the number two target behind Justin Jefferson.
And my concern with Jordan Addison when he played like
his size showed up a litt little bit like press coverage,
(27:01):
you were able to kind of affect him with that
and stuff. I thought Jordan Addison would be a great
real life number two. I had concerns if he could
be a true number one. That doesn't matter anymore because
he has the ultimate number one on the other side
of the field in Justin Jefferson, who's gonna get so
much defensive attention. Then you also add in TJ. Hokinson,
(27:22):
who's gonna get defensive attention.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
There.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Addison's gonna be able to slide in the slot, slide
out wide. And I even sweeted I said, look, don't
get this excited for him, but he's such a good
route runner and he's like his physique I think adds
to it. When he's running around out there in purple
and gold, I think people are gonna be like, look,
the new Stefan Diggs. So I'm very I think that
(27:45):
was the best fantasy landing spot of any.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Of these receivers. I think you hit on it exactly.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Is that with these other three guys JSN Quentin, Johnston,
Ze Flowers, they are all battling for a lot of
targets in their respective offense, and there very well could
be weeks when they do pop. But there are veteran
guys ahead of them in line that are going to
sort of dominate the target share and they're really gonna
have to fight to get those opportunities, whereas for Addison
(28:12):
there's a little easier path to getting there. Yes, Justin
Jefferson is going to get a ton of targets and TJ.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
Hawkinson is going to.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Get his, but I can very well see where Addison
can be the third target. And look, Kirk Cousins. Kirk
Cousins has generally been sort of a two player guy.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
You know.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
First it was it was Theeling and Diggs, then it
was Thelan and Jefferson, then it turned into sort of
theling In Hawkinson. But I do believe that he can
sustain a third pass catcher, and Addison does have the
skill set to be that guy.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
So you're right.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I think he's the guy that sort of landed in
the best situation.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
I was a little bit surprised to see the Chargers
go with Quinton Johnston. I know he's a good yards
after catch guy, which isn't something Mike Williams can can be,
or isn't at least, but I was still surprised. I
felt like they are very similar in a lot of respects.
I was just I was just surprised to see of
the receivers that Johnston was the one that the Chargers
(29:09):
went with.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
I don't know if you felt that way.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
I did, and I had Johnston as my second ranked receiver,
but I agree with what you said, Like for fit wise,
I thought Zay Flowers made the most sense because speedy
receiver you could put on the outside. I know he's
a little bit smaller, but he's fast. He could win downfield.
He could also win after the catch, and then you
kind of play chess chess with all of your pieces
(29:32):
then because like he could play in the slot as well,
so you can move Keenan out wide at times.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
But it's they're.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Really interesting because they have three receivers now and they're
all like pretty different skill sets, so they could have
some fun with that. But justin Herbert, I mean, and
the Chargers have no excuses now, right because like they
have their insurance policy if in case Allen and Williamsmith's
more time, like now's the time, Hermer you got to
(30:01):
step up?
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Do you would think so? Right?
Speaker 2 (30:04):
But also Chargers gonna charger sort of the way things
go there. I would say this all these guys, when
you look at the wide receivers, that were drafted. The
big winners here were the quarterbacks. I mean, for Gino Smith,
he gets one more weapon in JSN Justin Herbert as
though he didn't have enough weapons, now he gets one
more in Quinton Johnston.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
And you know what, it was a great day for
Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Right, you start the day by signing a new contract,
you get paid. Then on top of it, they go
out and they get you a wide receiver and they
really are sort of trying to remake this offense more
towards Todd Monkins liking than what we saw with Greg
Roman all those years in Baltimore. It was a big
day for Lamar Jackson. And then you know Kirk Cousins
(30:48):
getting Jordan Addison to go along with the combination of
Justin Jefferson and t J.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
Hawkinson.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
It was a good night for some veteran quarterbacks around
the NFL getting some help. Also, pretty good night your guy,
Josh Allen, because the last Fantasy relevant pick of the night,
Dalton Kinkaid, the tight end from Utah, goes with a
twenty fifth pick to the Buffalo Bills. Every USC person
(31:14):
watching the draft said, good riddance, get out of the
Pac twelve after Dalton Kincaid went all Travis Kelce on
the USC Trojan defense during the regular season there in
the PAC twelve. I know you tweeted when you saw that,
you know you like kan Kid as a player, you
weren't quite sure the fit for him in Buffalo. In
My response was just go put on that sc Utah
(31:36):
tape and you will understand. And I would say this,
The immediate reaction amongst the fantasy community has been, let's go.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
It's been diamond hands to the moon. Right.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
You take the best playmaking tight end in this draft
and you put him in an offense with Josh Allen,
everybody's fired up. Are we going to go a little
bit overboard drafting this guy in the early part of
the draft season.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
I think you're gonna have to be patient, just because
even with the best rookie tight ends, like outside of
maybe Kyle Pitts, they tend to start off slow as rookies.
And I don't know if Kinkaid will be the exception
or not, but I'm starting to make more sense of
this of this draft pick. My initial like you said,
was love the player, don't really love to fit because
(32:23):
I was like the Bills run a lot of three
wide receiver sets. In fact, they're always towards the league
lead in most three wide receiver sets, but they don't
run a lot of twelve, which is two tight end sets.
And then so I was confused because I'm like, they
already have a pass catching specialist tight end, Like they
don't really ask Dalson Knox to block a whole lot,
So what's gonna happen here? And then I read quotes
(32:45):
from their GM Bean who said that they will incorporate
some more twelve, but he also said, like, we're still
gonna run three wide receiver sets. Kinkaid's just gonna be
our third receiver, Like he could play in the slot,
he could plat wide. He compared him to Cole, a
bigger Cole Beasley's. So my thinking is like, Okay, as
(33:05):
long as they're not planning, like they even said, we're
not gonna ask him to.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Block a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
So as long as I was nervous that, like, hey,
they're gonna turn one of these two into a blocking specialist,
doesn't seem to be the case. It seems like they
were like, hey, we think he's better than any of
the receivers available to us. So I guess it's wheels
up for Josh Allen and the Bills get get a
little help for Stefan Diggs out there. I don't know
which of the Bills tight ends which one, Like, do
(33:31):
you think, offhand.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
Would you rather have in fantasy?
Speaker 2 (33:36):
I mean, at this point, I would probably go with Kinkaid,
even though he is a rookie. It's sort of the
potential upside there is sort of what we like. I
think I don't know who it was, I missed who
tweeted it, but base it's like, you know, the Bills
keep losing to the Chiefs, so they're they're gonna go
and get their own Travis Kelcey and that was I
think that's sort of the thinking.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
And look, DAWSA.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Knox has done some good things, but I think we've
seen what he is and I think we've seen ceiling there,
whereas I think, you know, I always say this, we
love the new shiny thing, and that is Dalton Kincaid
right now. So he's the guy that I would probably
take the shot at and hope that the athleticism and
the upside end up sort of winning the day, even
if it does take a little bit further into the season,
(34:16):
uh for it to happen.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
I did.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
I did love this sour puss like face on Mike
McCarthy after, like the Cowboys were one hundred percent taking him.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Oh yeah, absolutely, they were taking him. Yeah, they wanted
a tight end. They wanted Dalton Kincaid, should say, because
I think if they just wanted to tight end, they
could always have you gone after, say Mayor or somebody
like that. And who knows, maybe they do that later
on they go get themselves.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
A tight end.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
But Kincaid was definitely their guy, and the Bills were
able to swoop in and get him there. So uh,
those were all the fantasy relevant picks. When you look
at the round one in totality, what was your your
favorite pick?
Speaker 1 (34:55):
What was your re least favorite pick?
Speaker 3 (34:59):
So my face pick was Anthony Richardson. But besides that,
one a non fantasy pick that I really enjoyed because
I'm a troll. I loved the fact that the Jets
pick Swapping and then Bill Belichick after the Packers took
the old lineman that I think the Jets had their
eyes on.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Uh, there was one.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
More Broderick Jones and the Bill Belichick and the Patriots
were like, hey, Pittsburgh, you want to jump the Jets
take him and then we're still gonna get the guy
we're gonna take now and Christian Gonzales three picks later.
I was having some fun with a lot of my
Jet fan friends because I was like Bill Belichick, he
doesn't care what he does. As long as he could
stick it to the Jets.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
He's happy pretty much.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
I mean, that's that seems to be his whole reason
for being at this point. My favorite pick I mean,
I guess, yeah, the you know, the Richardson pick I love.
I love the Jordan Addison pick. I just wanted him
to go somewhere where he didn't necessarily have to be
the number one, but he was in a good situation.
I had seen him mocked to Buffalo, I would have
loved that. But minnesot I think is a really good
(36:00):
landing spot for him as well. I'm just still trying
to wrap my head around the Jamiir Gibbs pick. I
just I don't It's not about him, it's not about
his talent. It's just about the fit. It's what are
the Lions doing? What do they do with with DeAndre Swift,
how do they use him? Also having David Montgomery on
(36:21):
that roster. There's just a lot of things about it
that didn't necessarily make sense. And you know, we talk
about the Falcons having a lot of holes to fill
and using an unbraked pick on a running back. You know,
the Lions need a lot of work on the defensive
side of the ball. And I know they traded back
to get to where they are to get Gibbs, but
(36:42):
it just I don't know. I think they could have waited,
you know, they had they had what two picks, they
could have probably waited until eighteen to get Jamior Gibbs
and still gotten somebody at twelve to maybe fix some
of the holes in their defense. So that one, that
one just sort of confused me a little bit. Still
funny things to watch for day two. Will Levis still
(37:06):
on the board. I think that surprised a lot of people.
I can't imagine he's gonna wait very long though, in
day two to get his name called.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
Do you no, I'm shocked he's still available, not that
I mean, I've been very vocal that I'm not a
Will Levis guy, but I thought for sure someone would
have taken him in the first round, especially when he
was still there, you know, in the late twenties. I'm like, okay,
I thought some team would trade in back in to
get that fifth year option for Hendon Hooker. I thought
(37:36):
for sure someone would have done it if Will Levis
was available. I think tomorrow, if you're one of the
first teams up, like I know, the Steelers have the
first pick, but if you're one of those early teams,
he should be spending all night or all morning whenever
you wake up, calling around and trying to ship that pick,
because suddenly there's a quarterback that we thought would have
been gone, maybe even in the top ten available. So
(37:58):
I don't think it's a long wait for him. And
I'm guessing Hendon Hooker goes shortly after he does.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Yeah, I'm just looking right now.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
I mean, if there are no more trades, and by
the way, there were six trades in round one, if
no one else trades the Steelers the first pick, they're
not going to take a quarterback. The Cardinals are the
second pick, I don't think they will. The Lions could
make the move at pick thirty four, just because we
(38:25):
know Jared goff is not the long term answer there.
They've got to start thinking about that position. They could
do it at thirty four maybe, you know, the Seahawks
were sort of in the market potentially for Anthony Richardson
until he got drafted. I don't know if they would
do it at thirty seven. The Raiders could do it
at thirty eight. There were some talk that they would
do it potentially at seven. They could maybe make that
move at thirty eight and have Levis be the backup,
(38:47):
the understudy to Jimmy Garoppolo for a few years.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
So those are some of the options.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
I guess the Titans potentially at forty one could be
another potential option, but maybe somebody trades up and makes
the move. Running backs, they're pretty much all there except
for you know, obviously Bijon and Gibbs are gone. Pretty
much all the running backs are there, so I think,
you know, guys like Zach Charboneau will come off early.
I would think Florida, we're gonna see a lot of
(39:14):
running backs in Day two.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
Yeah, that's typically what we see. Unless you're like to
get two running backs in the first round is extremely rare.
So that says how good Bijon and Gibbs are especially
two in the top twelve going over any other skill
position players outside of the quarterbacks. So that says a
lot about this class. And the thing about running backs,
(39:37):
especially Day two running backs, it all depends on landing spot.
Like you can like a running back as much as
you want. Landing spot great like for fantasy at least,
landing spot determines everything.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
Yeah, absolutely, so we'll see where some of these guys go.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
The wide receivers, still plenty of wide receivers on the board.
Jalen Hyatt is still out there, Josh Downs, Centric Hillman,
some of the names that are still out there at
the wide receiver position, and then tight ends. Everybody save
Dalton Kincaid is still available. So I would think we're
gonna see Michael Mayer, Luke Musgrave, Darnell Washington, Sam Laporta
(40:15):
would expect to hear some, if not all of those
names called coming up on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
So eventful first round.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
We'll be back with you next week to recap the
entirety of the draft, and I guess I should also
remind you that the NFL Fantasy Live Draft fallout show
