Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wow, Wow, Hey and everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
It is Wednesday, May tenth, twenty twenty three. Welcome to
the NFL Fantasy Football Podcast. But we're also probably better
in bestball. It's being your rand MG Marcus grand Joy
by Michael F. Floria. We're in studios, we got specialists.
Give yourselves around of applause. We really appreciate you guys
hanging out with us. As always, we got plenty to
talk about. I put together a list of chatter and
(00:33):
I had I actually put these schedule release thing third
on here, but I feel like, let's just schedule release, man.
It's it's apparently it's like a soft launch for the
schedule now or something.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
I woke up and not only did I have notifications
that games had been announced, I had group chats going
where people were like already playing. And I'm like, hey,
maybe I'm wrong, because you know, I'm a little cynical,
and I'm like, we've known who's playing who for so long,
but people are excited and that's the whole point of me.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Could I be out of touch? No, it's the chilter
who are wrong. Yeah. No, they're starting to launch some
of these games. You might as well get into this
the international slate has been released. Week four, it'll be
Falcons against the Jaguars at Wimbley in London. Then the
very next week the Jaguars stay in London and they
will host or actually they're the road team right against
(01:20):
they are the road team.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
And now although they are London's.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Teams, they are London's teams. So either way, the Jaguars
are in London back to back weeks. First they play
the Falcons, then they play the Bills. That's in week five.
In week six it'll be the Ravens and the Titans
from Tottenham Hotspur, and in week nine from Frankfurt, Germany,
the Dolphins and the Chiefs. And in week ten, so
back to back weeks in Germany as well, it's the
(01:43):
Colts and the Patriots. So those are the international games.
I'll say this, the Dolphins Chiefs, that feels like a
game they should be played in either Kansas City or Miami.
I mean it's kind of a big deal.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
That's a big game. Yeah, that's a A lot of
these games are big ones though, And listen higher up,
if you're listening, and we know that you.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Are, you know that you are.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
We would love to be there, you know me personally
October seventh, the Bill's Jags. That sounds like a fun one.
I would love to go to Germany eat some good
food there. So you know, we both got our passports
in case you need anyone.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
They are up to date. We're ready to go. I
enjoy a good, warm ale, all of those things. I'm
a fan of Bombardier. I have been told by people
in the note that it is actually a legitimate quality
English beer. So you know we're here. We're here to help.
So those games are out. Also, we know that the
Black Friday matchup, the first ever in NFL history, is available,
(02:38):
not available, and it's known it's gonna be the Jets
and the Dolphins. So Aaron Rodgers primetime primetime ish. I
guess it'll be three o'clock Eastern time on Black Friday,
when hopefully everybody is back home from getting their discounted
TVs and stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
We'll be here here. But yeah, I know this is
the Aaron Rodgers effect for the Jets. Like I told
you group chats, I have a lot of Jet fan
friends back in New York and they were already planning
on going to this game. And I'm anticipating like at
least one Bill's Jets game will be primetime. So the
Jets going from getting like one TNF game a year
being their only prime time that life with Aaron Rodgers
(03:18):
is gonna be.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
A lot different. I think I saw that they could
have up to six primetime games this year.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
I believe is the limit, right.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
I believe. So. So they've got the Black Friday game
against the Dolphins. Then on Christmas Day we got the
Giants and the Eagles. There's already a lot of trash
talk going back and forth between those two teams. And
then on New Year's Eve December thirty first, it's the
Bengals at the Chiefs, which should be epic if those
two teams live up to expectations.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, and if I'm thinking correctly, that's going to be
like Fantasy Championship Week.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, it's week seventeen, so it's an afternoon game on
December thirty first. This could have major fantasy implications.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Oh, it's gonna people. New Year's Eves are gonna be
like made or ruined based on this game. Because if
you have like Patrick Mahomes or Tyreek Hill, You're You're
championship It's not gonna be decided by that game, but
you're gonna have a strong lean one way or the other.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Will either be having celebratory champagne or consolation champagne. That's
kind of how your nice is probably gonna go, depending
on what happens in Fantasy that week. So those are
the games that we know. The remainder of the schedule
will be released on Thursday. There will be a three
hour special on NFL Network. Tune in for that please
and get the breakdown on who's out a tough schedule
(04:34):
who doesn't. For us, As you mentioned, we've known the
matchups for a while, and so for fantasy you kind
of have an idea of what players are playing, which
teams or whatever. We don't necessarily know the order just yet.
But when it comes time to schedule release, is there
anything in particular.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
You look out for bye weeks? That's the big thing.
I am not a person who looks at the one.
I'm not a fantasy player who drafts based on schedule.
I know people will always be like, oh, you gotta
look for Week seventeen, and I get it in like
a best ball with a big tournament, you want to
look at stuff like that. But in a regular redraft
league or anything like that, you like, how hard is
(05:14):
it to plan two or three weeks ahead in fantasy football?
Try planning four months ahead. To me, I've had legitimate
conversations where people are like, well, I want to draft
this running back over this one that I think is
better because I like his playoff schedule better. And I'm like,
we these defenses could be completely different. How many times
do we think a defense is going to be terrible
and they end up being pretty good, or we think
(05:35):
a defense could be good and then injuries. So yeah,
to me, it's really the bye weeks. And then I
think it's always fun to like the big key marquee
games to just kind of get excited for them.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
But that's really all I do with the schedule. I mean,
bye weeks are the big ones there, you know. And
it's funny I in the past have sort of looked
at playoff schedules and you know, I've had to write
columns here and do videos about playoff schedules. But the
defenses are one of the least sticky things from year
to year in terms of defensive success. So you know,
(06:06):
some defenses that were good last year will be good
again this year. There will be some that were good
that last year that will be bad, and vice versa.
That's really hard to plan. And then you know, as
you mentioned, injuries are such a big part of this, right,
Like the player you draft might get hurt. The defense
that you're going against might end up being better than
you anticipated. So what looks like a really great playoff
schedule in May might not look so great when you
(06:29):
get to like November.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
And I remember last year when the schedule came out,
people were like the Colts, Like, that's the team you want.
Look at their playoffs schedule. Look could they get in
week seventeen? And yeah, if you drafted a bunch of
Colts last year, your season was over by week six.
So like, who cares about week seventeen at that point?
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Pretty much? But yeah, we will also, you know, kind
of be checking in to see what the schedule is,
and you know it'll be interesting to see. We'll get
to set up some revenge games and bad whole deal
that it's more fun for fans of teams, I think,
I think so, and I get it for fans like
you get to sort of plan trips. I know you know,
fans who travels to away games or want to see
their team come to whatever city. It's definitely a lot
(07:10):
more fun to kind of watch that and be able
to kind of book plane tickets and hotel reservations and
that sort of thing. So I sort of understand it
from that perspective.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Do you do the thing like will you go through
the Niner schedule and be like when, law I do
it every year and I'm like, why do I.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Do this time? Yeah? I shouldn't say no. I kind
of do, but I don't make a big deal out
of it. Maybe in my head, I'm like, no, I
see you know, I see ten wins, I see eleven wins.
Whatever it is. Yeah, but I don't. I don't do
it out loud. I don't do it publicly. Although you know,
Adam Rank for years got a lot of mileage a
couple of years ago out of saying the Niners were
going to be what like three and thirteen or two
(07:45):
and fourteen, and then they ended up in the.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Super Bowl where one Jimmy g passed away from being champions.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Pretty much, But yeah, Rank got a lot of a
lot of mileage out of that. I do know, for
the record that he has made amends with with Niners Nation.
Everything's cool, We've smoothed everything over. It's all good. Anyway.
That's enough of that. Some more chattering because there's not
actual news this time of year. It's more of you know,
things we're hearing or things we're reading. This one I
(08:15):
put it in here just for you, sir. The general
manager says he sees Kadarius Tony as a number one
wide receiver. Brett Viach says, the sky is the limit
for Kadarius Tony right now. If you go on you
know certain sites and look up ADPs underdog, Tony is
(08:40):
wide receiver number thirty seven. Overall, he's going off the
board right around number seventy seven. That's somewhere in around seven.
But for you, in your wildest dreams, your unabashed standship
of Kadarius Tony, where do you have him ranked?
Speaker 3 (08:55):
So I did this week run through the rankings. They're
up now on NFL dot com. And this is a
first draft. It is the middle of May, early May.
A lot's gonna change before you know, August, but as
of right now, I have Kadarius Tony as wide receiver
thirty one. So a little bit ahead of his adp
some names, He's just behind Chris Godwin, Tyler Lockett, Ayuk,
(09:18):
Mike Evans, ahead uh Pittman, Kirk, Deontae Johnson. I know
some people might like those, some of those other guys
more than Tony. I've also been kind of tweeting about
Tony lately, and Uh, people are not happy with me.
They're like, what are you gonna give this up? This
guy cannot stay healthy, he cannot stay on the field.
And I'm like, but if you look at when he
is on the field, one he earns targets at such
(09:40):
a high rate, and two he's extremely effective when he
gets those targets. The only issue is he hasn't been
able to stay on the field a whole lot. But
I think what gets overlooked is that the Chiefs were
hoping that they could have got Kadarius Tony in that
draft a couple of years ago. Then they traded the
one hundredth pick for him. Then they used to him
(10:00):
in their playoff run, and they when he was out there,
he was getting targets at a high clip so and
he caught the biggest touchdown for them in the Super Bowl,
like the Chiefs really like Kadarius Tony, is the point
that I'm making, And they've wanted to have him for
a while, and they themselves are saying, like, we get
a whole year now to game plan for him and
to design plays just for him, Andy Reid all of that.
(10:22):
So I like Kadarius Tony, But what I like even
more Marcus is like Rashi, Rice is still getting hype,
Sky Moore is getting hype because the Chiefs don't have
a true number one. It's gonna keep Tony's ADP down
a little bit if those other guys get hype. Like
I'm sure you saw it. A video came out on
Twitter or Rice burning a defensive back. The dude was
wearing a number fifteen jersey, which is Patrick Mahomes's number,
(10:45):
which tells you who he is on the roster. He's
a I don't know who the corner was, but I
don't think they have big plans for him. And people
are getting hyped up over one off season video. Let
his ADP go up and keep Kadarius Tony.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
We are in, you know, get fired up over slow
motion practice vid season right now? You know, Like I
saw a video of Jordan Love if slow motion, Jordan
Love throwing an out pattern too, Jaden Reid and just
like I'm seeing, like the hype comments underth it was.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
The least impressive video ever.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
It was a basic, a basic pack practice out route,
like it was a warm up route, and it's getting
hyped up. So this is this is the silly season
that we have entered here. I will say this for me.
I've got Tony right now at wide receiver thirty.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Four, so we're right there together.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
So we're pretty much right together. We're a little bit
above kind of where the consensus is on him right now.
I'm just of the opinion that the Chiefs are not
going to have one wide receiver that they lean on
right now. It's gonna be Travis Kelce. He's going to
get his you know, one hundred and thirty, one hundred
and fifty targets, whatever it's going to be, and then
(11:57):
you're gonna have everybody else sort of battling. Right, You're
gonna have Tony, who lookally Tony will probably be the
number two target in his offense as long as he's healthy. Right,
but you know, she Rice is going to get his
uh sky Moore. They're gonna figure I think some way
to sort of integrate him into this offense. Marquez Valdez Scantling,
for what it's worth, is still there on this roster.
(12:18):
I know he didn't necessarily make a big impact, but
he is still there. And this is the thing that
last year, you remember in training camp, Patrick Mahomes just
basically came out and said, Hey, fantasy managers, you're gonna
be frustrated with us because we're gonna spread the ball around.
And he was one hundred percent right. There was Travis Kelcey,
and then there were the Pips. Right, it was just
like everybody else. And I think it's gonna continue to
be that. So maybe Tony gets a little bit more
(12:41):
than everybody else, but it is going to be I mean,
it's going to be like a boy band, right, Like
Travis Kelsey's going to be Harry Styles and the rest
of these dudes are gonna be the rest of one direction. See.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
I was gonna age myself. I was gonna say he's
justin Timberlake.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
See I thought about that, but I'm like, you know,
somebody out there is gonna be like, how old are you?
And I'm like old, So I tried to make it. Also,
I did see something about One Direction come across my
time this point, So.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
When you said Harry Styles, I was like, I think
One Direction, but I can't for one hundred percent certainty
tell you that's the band he's from. And I agree
with you. I think it's gonna be like a HAJJ
page where kind of like last year. But if anyone
plays that that juju role where they're a little bit
more consistent, I think it'll be Tony. And if you
were to I know I'm biased, but if you were
(13:24):
to say who has the best chance of breaking out
and being a difference maker, to me, I think Tony
has to be the favorite to be that on the Chiefs,
I think so too. And I'm not I know, as
you mentioned, a lot of people are saying, but he
can't stay healthy, Like I'm not gonna use that.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
I know that's it has been the story of his career.
But we've said it before. You're injury prone until you're not, which.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
To me, I know I say this all the time,
but if you could be injury prone until you're not,
injury prone is a useless label that just uses stuff
that happened in the past to try to project the future.
It doesn't actually indicate anything of future. Like I would
like to talk to an actual doctor and if they
were like, hey, Kadarius Tony's injuries are gonna hamper him forever, Okay,
(14:06):
then that's one thing. But I think a lot of
the times in fantasy, we're just like this guy got
hurt in the past, He's gonna keep getting hurt.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Past performance is not an indicator of future performance necessarily,
So so all right, Kadarius Tony. The hype train I
think will continue to roll, though maybe we'll be tempered
by the fact that people are like, I don't know,
excited about Rashi Rice or something. People are definitely excited
about Justin Fields. And according to Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getzi,
Fields is already quote light years ahead of this time
(14:36):
last year. And this is a lot because Fields, without
being a great passer, without having a ton of weapons
to throw to still finish the year last year is
what quarterbacks six overall I believe it was. Yeah, QB
six is where he finished ran for eleven hundred yards,
had eight touchdowns on the ground, just threw for twenty
two hundred yards and change. Only seventeen passing touchdowns. So
(15:00):
if he could end up as a top six quarterback
without being a great passer, and according to the OC
is light years ahead, what are we talking about? Top
three QB one, what are we talking about?
Speaker 3 (15:14):
I think QB one is his ceiling. But I'm not
gonna say like he's the favorite to be the QB
one or anything. But to me, there's less than ten
quarterbacks that have a chance of finishing as the QB
one in fantasy this year, and Justin Fields is one
of them. Like I think Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes,
Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Deshaun Watson, if he can go back,
(15:39):
turn the clock back, Joe Burrow, I would say yes,
Justin Herbert. But those quarterbacks have to be perfect because
they're not gonna run nearly as much. So to be
the QB one, you need to be off the like
Aaron Rodgers twenty twenty whatever. The first MVP season he
had where he threw like forty four touchdowns four interceptions,
(16:01):
off the charts efficient was like the QB six in fantasy, right,
because you don't If you don't run, it's just so
hard to get to that QB one. So while I
have Fields ranked as my QB six, I don't think
like his floor is as safe as a Joe Burrow.
I do think the ceiling is actually higher because if
he could give you anywhere close to what he gave
you with his legs last year and then take that
(16:22):
next step as a passer, and even forget what the
OC is saying, just having Dj Moore there with Darnel
Mooney and Claypool, like, I think it will lead to
better pass results for justin Fields. So to me, it
depends the passing is gonna determine how highly he could finish.
But I do think he has a chance to be
the QB one.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
He's being drafted right now as the QB five. I've
got him a QB seven, but that's not in Stone
like I can, you know, I can definitely kind of
flip that around.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Give Herbert ahead of him.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
I've got no So, I've got Alan Hurtz, Mahomes Jackson,
I've got Burrow, and I've got Lawrence because I'm really
high on Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Right to me, Fields, Herbert and Lawrence were three that
I keep debating.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
We've got Herbert just behind Fields. Okay, so we're right there,
right there, And like I said, again, this is may.
Things will change. It's not set in stone. I feel
like though, that's sort of a safe I guess floor
if you will for Fields, I mean, I think unless
things go completely sideways, he's going to continue to be
(17:23):
a QB one, he's going to continue to be a
top ten quarterback. I think in a lot of regards,
you know, it's just how much does he actually advance
as a passer? Does do these new weapons make a
big difference? And I think it will. I would guess,
you know, looking at nine hundred one thousand yards on
the ground, if he can get you twenty five hundred
twenty seven hundred passing yards and get to twenty touchdowns,
(17:46):
top three is certainly not not on reason.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
And we have the same top eight. To me, I think,
no matter what order you have him in, like those
should be your top eight. And I think there's a drop.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Off after that. Yeah, because at that point, I mean
I've got I've got Deshaun Watson's same.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
I don't feel great about it.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
I don't feel great about it, But like the guys after,
like Sean Watson, like you know, Dak and Daniel Jones
and Kirk cut Like it's just yeah exactly.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
So like in drafts, I think for the first time ever,
you should prioritize getting a top quarterback, like maybe not
the top three who you have to use, like a
top three round pick Togain, but like, I don't want
to Deshaun Watson would be like my emergency, Like if
I miss out the top eight, I'll take a shot
on him. But I don't ideally wouldn't want to be
going into the season with like Tua or Rogers or Dak,
(18:37):
Like I just feel like there's better quarterbacks than I
want to be in on them.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
If those are your qb ones, then you are almost
forced to draft a second quarterback. Ye at that point,
you know, if you are going into the season and
Dak Prescott for instance, is your QB one, you know,
I'm also gonna try to come around and I don't
know if I'm drafting a Jared Goff, you know, if
i'mfting Anthony Richardson, I was gonna say, Anthony Richardson, that's
(19:03):
the one for me.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Like if I don't get one of the top eight
and I get I would just because it's just upside
for the QB. That's all I want.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
You know, Anthony Richardson can be potentially this year what
Justin Fields was last year. YEA, a guy who is
very raw as a passer but can give you those
rushing yards. And if he can get you again nine
hundred thousand, eleven hundred yards, get you eight touchdowns on
the ground, you're gonna feel pretty good about what he does.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
This sounds wild. Then I tweeted it out yesterday and
I don't think the results are in my favor. But
I ranked Anthony Richardson as the QB thirteen and I
think that was fifteen.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
I said.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
I was like, I'm not telling you he's gonna finish
his QB thirteen, but this is how I rank, how
I would draft, and after the QB ones, I go
for upside with QB twos, and I don't think the
only one. I'm like, Daniel Jones and him are kind
of closed because Jones can run as well, but I
don't think Jones is gonna rush for as much as
Anthony Richardson does.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
Probably not, but I think Jones will throw for more
yards and more touchdowns than Anthony Richardson, but I've got
him as QB fifteen because I think the upside is
huge on a guy like Richardson, So I don't think
it's crazy. You know. Again, this is one of those
things where may people are gonna like yell at you
and and they're gonna, you know, send out angry tweets,
and then we'll get to August and like, you know,
Anthony Richardson will be coming off the boarder is like
QB thirteen, and then you will have.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
QB on a certain best ball site, right wow, switch
a certain K nine theme best ball site.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Yeah, so, uh, you know, then you will have your
come up and your come up and we'll be had. Uh.
Let's turn focus because last week we sort of recap
the last couple of days of the draft. Wanted to
come back this week and talk about some veteran winners
and losers. Figure we break it down into the guys
who won and the guys who lost. Maybe we should
have started with losers, but that's not how I wrote
this out. So we're just gonna do it the way
(20:43):
I wrote it. By the way, I didn't even mention
it the start of the show. Florial's Film Festival is back.
Oh yeah, we'll get to that a little bit. There's
a lot of excitement in the building about what we watched,
a lot of conversation before the show. But anyway, veteran
winners and losers. Uh the winners. Desmond Ritter sort of
weirdly won in this. You know, there had been some
(21:05):
chatter that maybe, just maybe the Falcons could consider a quarterback.
I know they said they were out on the Lamar
Jackson sweepstakes, but you know, people like to talk, and
they thought maybe they could still go after a quarterback. Instead,
the Falcons got and draft b Jeon Robinson in the
first high first round pick. They got in to get
an offensive lineman to help kind of shore up that
(21:25):
offensive line. They've already got Kyle Pitts, They've already got
Drake London, so the weapons seemed to be in place
in that offense. Does any of this make Desmond Ridder draftable?
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Probably is nothing more than like a low end QB two,
But I think there's upside. I think he's more of
like a super flex kind of quarterback. But I think
there's more upside here, and I think the offense certainly
is going to be better with Desmond Ridder. My only
concern is are they just gonna They were already one
of the run heaviest teams in football. Now with Bijon,
(22:00):
are we just Which is why it pains me to
say this. I'm souring a little on Kyle. I think
he thought amazing and we all know that, but like
I don't. I we know how frustrating it was last year,
and I don't see any reason to think.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
It'll be different. I get that, I do get that.
I think though some of that concern has sort of
been baked into his ADP right now. Right now, his
ADP is right around sixty sixty three, So you're talking
about round five, which minimizes some of the risks. Last year,
we were taking Kyle Pitts in like round three, right
(22:39):
and like I heard people say they took him late
in round two, which means you did miss out on
a lot. If you drafted Kyle Pitts this year, if
he's round five, maybe even round six, I think what
you're missing out on to draft him is minimal. I
still believe in the talent and and I don't know,
maybe this is just me. Maybe I'm ready for Lucy
(23:01):
to pull the football away again. But I just believe
that either Arthur Smith's gonna look at it or somebody's
gonna sit Arthur Smith down and be like, you have
two weapons in the passing game, get them the football.
I know you have Bejon, and I know you want
to run the ball. You know eighty percent of the
time if you could, you have these two weapons, you
have to use them. So that's part of me maybe
(23:21):
just being stubborn. There's no there's no statistic to back
that up. It's just a feeling. Really.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
I'm still holding out hope though that because right now, look,
if you're drafting right now, you're one of the crazies
like us. I'm hoping that when the more casual the
people who are like I don't want Kyle Pitts on
my team after what he did to me last year.
I'm hoping because a lot of the times hype guys
we see get pulled up in August, I'm hoping the
reverse effect happens for Kyle Pitts.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
I think it will. I think when you get more
casual players coming in later in the summer, they're gonna
be like, you idiots told me to draft Kyle Pitts
and he ruined my season and I lost. Screw you guys,
I'm going home. I do think that ADP is gonna
come down once you get a lot more casual players
who have long memories. They start to show up here.
(24:09):
Gino Smith definitely a winner. They go and add some
running back help. They get Zach Sharboney. They go out
and drave Jack Jackson Smith in Jigba, which actually that
presser should have been the headline there. They get jays In,
they go as Zach Sharboney. They have kind of gone
all in on Geno Smith as their quarterback. You know,
he gets a new deal, he gets some weapons. Can
(24:29):
he be AQB one again? I mean, this is a
guy who was a top ten quarterback last year. Did
he catch lightning at a bottle? Or can he do it again? No?
Speaker 3 (24:39):
I think he could do it again. I think one
Gino is not the same Geno that.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
He was years ago.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
He's obviously developed a lot as a player. I think
he is in a system that is really really friendly
and fits his strengths. And the weapons got even better,
like now they have JSN wide receiver. One in this class,
who's going to be their number three. I keep saying, like,
I don't know why we're hearing the demise talk for
(25:06):
Tyler Lockett. Like every metric last year, Tyler Lockett was
better than DK Metcalf, Like he had more Fantasy points too,
despite much fewer targets. He had more touchdowns despite like
ten fewer end zone targets. Tyler Lockett is a really
good running receiver. DK Metcalf is such a big playmaker
that then you add JSN into this. I don't have
(25:26):
Geno ranked as a QB one because I think his
upside is more is like a low end QB one,
so I tend to put guys like Anthony Richardson who
have a little bit more upside higher. But yeah, I
easily think he could be top twelve, top ten.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Again, I was gonna be outraged for a second because
I see that he's coming off the board as QB sixteen.
I was like, how dare you? And then I went
back to my rankings and I have him ranked this
QB sixteen, So I can't really be upset about it,
but it does sort of you know, there's a disconnect there,
right because this is a guy who was the QB
five last year, it did it without a whole lot
(26:01):
of rushing attempt a whole lot of rushing yards, had
three hundred and sixty six rushing yards, just one rushing touchdown,
but through for forty two hundred yards, had thirty touchdowns
through the air, and I do think that those numbers
can be repeated. As you mentioned, I mean, they add Jackson,
Smith and Jig, but they have gotten better on offense.
And now you know, I think they're all comfortable, right
(26:22):
because I keep saying this. Gino wasn't supposed to be
their starter at the beginning of last season. It was
going to be Drew Locke. He stepped in did an
amazing job with it, so I think he'll I think
he'll continue to be successful. James Cook, you as our
resident Bills fan. Here they go and signed Damien Harris,
but they didn't draft anybody they really compete. The Bills
(26:42):
have this weird habit of collecting pass catching running backs
and not throwing them to the football. But what do
you see as James Cook's role in Buffalo this year?
Speaker 3 (26:51):
I think he's going to be the lead back for them,
and he's a breakout candidate won that I know I've
seen some people hyping up Damien Harris, and I'm like,
I'll continue to do so because I want all the
James Cook that I can get. Because Cook is explosive,
he could run between the tackles, but he's also a
good pass catcher. And something that I've talked about a
lot on this podcast is Sean McDermott and the Bills,
(27:14):
probably more than any team in the NFL, truly believe
in a rookie wall and last year with their first
and second round pick, their first round pick being Elam
the cornerback second round pick was Cook, they didn't use
either of them really consistently until the last part of
the season and then in the playoffs. So I think
this in year two, we're gonna see Cook kind of
(27:35):
set free. I think Harris is there to be like
the short yardage guy. That's my concern if he's gonna
vulture the touchdowns. But you get James Cook as an
RB three, and I.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Think the upside is much much higher than that. I mean,
as an RB three, I would love James Cook and
I just I just want him to be involved in
the passing game. That's all I'm asking for. It's just
the same, just throwing the ball a little bit. I
do have him as kind of a low end or
a high end RB. I should say I got him
at twenty nine right now, so I just, you know,
(28:06):
I just want clarity, and that's something the Bills have
not offered us a lot of. But he is in
line to be the guy there in Buffalo in that
more than anything else is encouraging.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
I have him at twenty eight. We're in lots, I know, right,
I promise you.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
But we did not consult with each other on these
It just sort of has worked out that way. Which
I was gonna do a show about like rankings and
where we disagree, and I feel like that's gonna be
a pretty boring show. Cam Acres still sitting pretty in
Los Angeles. You know the Rams. Obviously, they didn't have
a ton of draft picks, they have salary cap issues.
(28:40):
They're sort of kind of a mess in trying to
rebuild this thing. After the Super Bowl win a couple
of seasons ago. Acres started slowly during the year, but
late in the season really picked things up and finished
very strong in the last five or six weeks of
the season. Last year looks for the moment, like he's
going to sort of be the guy they got hiring
Williams there. They did draft someone kind of late in
(29:03):
this in the draft, But I'm more curious about Acres himself.
Who is the real cam Akers. Is it the guy
that struggled at the start of the year or is
the guy who got hot at the end of the year.
I think it's the guy who got hot at.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
The end of the year because he missed all the
season before with that torn achilles and then early on
in the year they were kind of it was him
and Henderson, and remember we were like joking daily on
this show. It felt like like Sean McVay doesn't even
know who his lead running back is gonna be. And
then Acres was in the doghouse and wasn't even used
(29:36):
a couple of times. And then after they worked all
of their disagreements out and he didn't get traded and everything,
he went off. And I think it coincides with him
getting the opportunity from Sean McVay while also getting that
extra time to recover from that achilles injury, which I
think people have you as like a Tony acl in
the same light, and it's like no. A torn achilles is,
in my opinion, the worst injury you could suffer in sports,
(29:59):
and it's like Akers and Kevin Durant are the success
stories of coming back. So to me, seeing him play
so well down the stretch has me feeling encouraged. I
have him right now as the RB nineteen, but I
feel like I like him more than that ranking indicates.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
So this is where we sorted there. I got him
at twenty four. Okay, I just you know what Cooper
cups back. They did draft Zach Evans from Mississippi, but
he was also sixth round picks. It's not like, you know,
he's going to necessarily demand opportunity to get on the
field there. I mean, he will have to earn it
(30:39):
in training camp. I just think that this offense is
going to be I don't think it's going to be
as bad. I don't think it can be as bad
as it was last year, And with Cooper cup back,
that takes a lot of opportunity away potentially from Camp Akers.
But I do think he is closer to the guy
we saw at the end of the season what we
saw at the beginning of the season. For what that's worth,
(31:01):
Traylon Burks. I thought for all the world that the
Titans were going to draft wide receivers because they need
wide receivers in the worst possible way. But it appears
that they didn't really feel that way. They drafted a
receiver in the seventh round, Colton Dowell from Tennessee Martin.
(31:22):
So right now, Traylon Burks is sort of it at
least at wide receiver. They got Chikakonko, who I know
a lot of us like at tight end. We talked
before about how potentially bad this offense can be. But
for Burks as the lead target, the main target, what's
his ceiling this year?
Speaker 3 (31:40):
I feel like I'm probably too low on him because
of the opportunities. He could get a lot of targets,
but he's also going to be the main focal point
of defenses. I have him ranked his wide receiver thirty seven.
I feel like that might be a little low, but
it's in this big cluster. There's like a cluster of
like fifteen twenty wide receivers that I think you could
kind of jumble up. The thing is, I'm really fearful
(32:03):
of this offense just completely tanking. So I think I'm
just gonna be lower on most Titans than a lot
of people because I'm seeing some love for Ryan Tannehill
out there, and I'm like, Ryan Tannehill is good when
you have pieces in place. I don't think they really do.
And then I think if things go, you know, the way,
they don't want him too early on in Tennessee, like
we could see a switch to will Levis, especially if
(32:25):
the Titans are really tanking like, because then they want
to know what they have in will Levis. So I
don't know, I see a lot of there is upside
here with Burkes because he's a receiver that I like
his skill set and he should get a lot of volume.
But I just I don't know. I see a lot
of pitfalls in his way as well. Wait, I'm wondering
where you have him ranked.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
So if you say you're too low on him, then
that makes me feel worse because I've got him at
thirty eight. You got a thirty seven, I've got him
at thirty eight. Again, lockstep, We're pretty much we're pretty much,
you know, walking side by side on this one. Just
because I think the upside for Traylon Burks is that
as the main target we know that Ryan Tannehill can
support at least one target in the offense. I think
(33:07):
he ends up having that job all year long, unless
you know, something happens injury wise, then maybe we see
Will Levis. But I think they're gonna let let Tannehill
sort of ride it out in whatever. This possibly his
swan song there in Tennessee. Burks is gonna get a
ton of targets, but I just don't see this offense
being very productive or scoring a lot of touchdowns. And
(33:28):
if you know these rumors happen and they move on
from Derrick Henry at some point during the season, that
offense gets even worse, and I think they're even less productive,
which again sort of impacts Burkes and what his potential is.
So I'm just not excited about it. It falls under
the category of hey man, somebody's got to catch the ball,
which to me is just not always a sound way
to draft players. That's it Remindre Stevenson, which I think
(33:52):
we're all sort of happy about because we loved what
he did last season, and we were very big on
Stevenson seasons and and it appears it is Stevenson seasonson
once again. Damien Harris is gone. The Patriots did not
draft any running backs. They did, you know, make some
offseason moves. But Ken Stevenson, I mean, this might be
(34:14):
the silliest question here. Is he an RB one this year? Yes?
Speaker 3 (34:19):
Like I know people were trying to knock Stevenson what
he did last year and saying like, oh, it was
because Damien Harris got hurt and stuff like, no, he's
better than Damien Harrison, like they let him walk. I
have Stevenson as the RB ten right now, and he
might even get boosted up. The only concern was like,
are they gonna drive Bijon because there was a lot
of rumors about that.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
They didn't.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
They didn't take Gibbs, and that's it. There's like Stevenson's
gonna get all the volume there. He's gonna get all
the carry targets out of the backfield on a Patriots
offense that probably cannot be worse than it was last year.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
That's probably true. I've got him at fifteen, but I'm
very much open to to sort of you know, readjusting
that right because there are some guys like I may
move Traves et and down. I think at this point,
you know, I'm sort of not sure what to make
of an Aaron Jones somebody like that. So I'm definitely
open to sort of reevaluating that. And again, fifteen, it
(35:15):
makes you a high end QB two, it gives you
some some running back one upside. I think that's sort
of where I am with Stevenson. And again this is
sort of like with Burks, just not sure how good
the Patriots offense is going to be, but at least
knowing that Stevenson's going to get a lot of chances
to touch the football with you know, not necessarily a
ton behind him. I mean, there will be guys there
that can potentially, you know, make some plays and you know,
(35:39):
get some opportunities, but this is going to be mostly
Vermondre Stevenson's show, I think this year in New England.
Take a quick break, come back, we'll talk about the
guys on the down side, and we'll dive back into
Florio's film festival with a little bit of action from
South of the Border that's coming up next on the
NFL Fantasy Football Podcast. So we talked about the good,
(36:06):
let's talk about the bad, the guys who did not
make out so well because of the NFL draft. And
let's start with Rashad Penny, because when he signed in Philadelphia,
it seemed like, hey man, things are great. Rashad Penny's
gonna get opportunity, It's gonna be great in a great offense.
And then lul of a hold, here comes DeAndre Swift
in a trade from the Detroit Lions over to Philadelphia.
(36:28):
So you've got DeAndre Swift, You've got Kenneth Gainwell, you've
got Rashad Penny, You've got Boston Scott. Is is he
anything more than like an RB three in fantasy now?
In this crowded backfield.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
No, I have Swift at RB twenty seven and Penny
at RB thirty six right now. And I was so
excited for Rashad Penny after free agency and he was
the only running back they brought in. But now getting Swift,
to me, I could see this. I also think it
hurts Kenny gaine Well. I could see Swift being their
lead pass catching running back and then like Swift and
(37:05):
Penny splitting groundwork and Gainwell kind of sprinkled in. I
also could just see it being like an all out mess.
I don't think one of these guys is gonna like
put up Miles Sanders type numbers like last year. I
think it'll be more of a committee approach because Swift
and Penny have both struggled to stay on the field.
Maybe that's what the Eagles are thinking, like, Hey, if
(37:25):
we could piece together seventeen games in a playoff run
with these two, then we'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Yeah, I guess that's it. You know, I still want
to be excited, Like, I've got Swift at running back seventeen,
I've got Penny. I'd like twenty five. You know, I
want to believe in these guys because the offense is good.
And look not that Swift was in a good offense
last year in Detroit. Penny was in a pretty good
offense last year in Seattle. It was very productive there.
(37:52):
But they now get to go behind a great offensive
line in Philadelphia. They get to work with Jalen Hurts
and that group of pass catchers there. I want to
be optimistic about it, but I think you make a
good point in that there's a very good chance that
they just really just go to the committee situation. Frustrate
the hell out of all of us. When you know
you're starting, you're starting DeAndre Swift and suddenly it's Kenny
(38:14):
Gainwell getting catches on third down. You're like, but what
the hell is going on here?
Speaker 3 (38:18):
Sort of if one was to run away with it,
I do think it will be swift. I think he's
the best all around talent.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
But but you never know. I mean, Philadelphia is part
of the reason they're successful is because they are varying
their attacks on a regular basis. Speaking of Seattle and
guys that had been there, Kenneth Walker the third is
still there. We were excited about his opportunity, it seemed.
And then here comes Zach Sharboney, who I really like,
and look, trust me, like I'm praising at UCLA Bruin.
(38:47):
So don't think that I'm not aware of what's happening
right now. Charboney shows up there, and I think this
is a guy who can be a really nice piece
in this offense. You mentioned this before too, that you
know the Sea have showed that they want to run
multiple backs. So is Kenneth Walker still in RB one now?
With Sharbona there?
Speaker 3 (39:06):
Not for me and this might seem too low. I
have him as the RB twenty one right now. Wow, Like,
and i'd at cost I'd much rather Charboneau like, because
you're gonna get rounds discount, and I think it could
be a situation where week to week, like I think
right now, the thinking is like, this is Kenneth Walker
(39:28):
still going to be the lead back? He was so
good last year, but he's like an explosive runner where
Charbonneau is better at between the tackles running and he's
more physical. And so I could see there being weeks
where Kenneth Walker finishes as an RB one top ten,
maybe even top five, because he's so explosive and has
that much upside. But then I could see there being
other weeks where he's not a top twenty, top thirty
(39:51):
running back and all the production goes to the other guys.
So yeah, this is a backfield that I think is
gonna be kind of murky. And when there's the backfield
like this, as much as I like the talent of
Kenny Walker and was all ready to have him as
a top ten running back before the draft, I'll just
go with the guy.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
That's much cheaper. So I've got him a little higher
than you. I've got him at sixteen. I've got sharbon
A at thirty four. Sane right now now, because Pekar
wants to run the ball. Even as good as as
Gino Smith was last year, I still think they want
to run the ball, and I think, you know, as
been pointed out, they really want to try to rotate
(40:28):
backs through there. Now they've got a guy in Charbone
that can step in and take some of those opportunities,
so I you know, I think that hurts Walker, which
is frustrating because we loved what he did last year
with hoping that he would get more of an opportunity
other big losers. I just put the New York Giants
wide receiver corps first off, they were a collection of
(40:50):
slot receivers in search of an offense. Then they go
out and add Jalen Hyatt, who he's definitely the speed
element in this offense. He's the guy that can, you know,
stretch the field a little bit. But it's still one
more guy that they have to try to get the
football too. Right when you're already looking at him, Let's
just let's look at some of the guys that they
(41:11):
have already, right, Darius Slayton, what Isaiah Hodgens, jan Dale Robinson,
Sterling Shepherd is back. I know I'm missing some people
there but you know that's they added Darren Waller, who's
going to be the target leader in this offense, and
then they go get Jalen Hyatt. Maybe they move on
from some of these guys. I don't know, but there's
(41:32):
just there's so much confusion. There is there any guy
in this past group, in this wide receiver group, I
should say that that you have any interest in.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Jalen Hyatt would be the one, just because, like you said,
he brings the speed in the downfield element, so he
he can have those big blow up weeks. And I
think they're gonna give him plenty of opportunity because they
need that, Like they had by far the fewest attempts,
completions and yards on deep passes last season. But he's
still one. I think that's better in best ball because
(42:01):
he's gonna be very up and down. The way I'm
attacking the Giants passing game is Darren.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
Waller or Busts.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
And being able to get Darren Waller as like the
tight end seven is part of the reason I'm souring
on Kyle Pitts because I'm like, I could take Kyle
Pitts in the fifth or wait a round or two
and get Darren Waller, and I'm very big on Darren
Waller right now, but yeah, so if I if he counts,
I'll take him. If not, it's it's Jalen Hyatt and
more than likely though it's.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Probably no one. Yeah, it's just you know, maybe Hyatt.
I forgot Paris Campbell also is there. They have Jamison Crowder.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
On the who has now completed his He went from
the Jets to the Bills to the Giants.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
He's completed the New York At all of the New
York claiming teams, only one of them actually plays in
New York. But you know whatever, they all claim New York.
Speaker 1 (42:49):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
I yeah, it's highat maybe for me, I can't see
myself drafting any Giants receivers. Darren Waller obviously, but no
receivers here. There's just nothing about this group that gets
me very excited at all. Tis Marshall Junior sort of
loses out here because, again, this was an offense that
(43:13):
we talked about before, didn't really have a clear cut
number one wide receiver. They went out and they got
DJ Chark, They go out and get Adam Thielen, but
then they draft Jonathan Mingo, who I think right now,
I've seen him as number two on the depth chart,
but I feel like that's a temporary state of affairs.
I mean, Marshall in this first couple of years has
(43:34):
really provided nothing in terms of production. And sure there's
always a chance for that third year breakout, but it
just seems unlikely based on what he's done the first
two years. You never really want to definitively put a
stamp on someone's career. But is it over for Tarras
Marshall Junior.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
I think it's over for him being someone that you
can draft. Maybe as the season progresses, if he gets
an upper tunity. I still think there's talent here with
with Terrace Marshall Junior. He's a big bodied receiver, but
I think my expectation is to start the year their
two wide receiver sets are gonna be feeling in Chark
and with Mingo playing the third. But I could see
(44:15):
that switching quickly as the season goes on. So maybe
there's still hope for him hitting as a waiver wire guy.
But yeah, he's off my draft like I'm not. There's
just receivers who I think have a much clearer path
to upside, like late in drafts, like Jalen Hyatt, for example,
that I would rather take over. I mean, and I
think we talked about this last week, like Mingo's a
guy that in a vacuum. I have mild interest in him.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
But I think if you're talking, say a Dynasty rookie draft,
and you look around at the situations for other guys,
You're like, oh yeah, Jonathan Mingo like this sort of
sort of how it is. And I think when I
look at the Panthers wide receiver group, I'm like, Okay,
sure I can. I can tell myself a story about
DJ Chark. You know, if he can stay healthy, stay
on the field, I can see him being productive. Adam
Feeling and I'm probably out on Terrace Marshall probably Oatta,
(45:02):
but huh, you know, Jonathan Mingo, you know what I mean.
So when it comes back to with him, because I
do think that before the year is out, you're gonna
see him on the field consistently, especially when Carolina is
running three wide receiver sets in that offense. Dawson Knox.
We like the Dawson. I think the Bills still like
(45:22):
the Dawson, but they also have the Dalton. Now they
drafted Dalton Kincaid. Can Dawson Knox coexist with Dalton Kinkaid
in this offense in a real.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
Life sense, yes, In a fantasy sense, I don't think so.
Like the Bills have been vocal about wanting to run
more twelve personnel, and I've seen some like analytics that
said last year, twelve is the best way to pass,
like the most effective, and the Bills ran at the
second fewest in football, And they're saying they're gonna use
Kincaid as a slock guy. They camped him to like
a bigger Cole Beasley. But I think for fantasy there's
(45:54):
only enough so much volume to go around, and we
know Diggs is gonna get his, Gabe Davis will get
his as the number two, I think King Kaid is
going to see more volume than Knox because they really
only like knocks in the red zone, Like he's not
a big guy that they used between the twenties or
not someone that they like. It's like catch and run ability.
So while I think they can co exist in real life,
(46:14):
i'd rather Kinkaid in fantasy, and I have them both
ranked as tight end twos outside the top twelve. But
I have King Kid ranked higher because I just think
he has more upside.
Speaker 2 (46:23):
I think he has way more upside than than Dawson Knox.
I mean Knocks. I think at some point last year
became incredibly touchdown dependent because he wasn't getting the targets
on a regular basis that he needed to be successful.
And look at it's worked out over the last two seasons,
fifteen total touchdowns, but it still never reached even six
hundred yards receiving in a season. I mean, I think
(46:46):
Kinkaid can top those numbers. I think he can get you,
you know, six seven hundred yards of the season. I
think he can get you eight touchdowns in that offense.
You know, I am curious how the Bills sort of
figure out how to get both these guys on the field,
because I think you want to just completely toss Knocks aside.
But if you're asking me which Bills tight end I'd
rather have, it is, without a doubt, going to be
(47:07):
Daltonton Kid this year. Last one more tight end talk
Austin Hooper, who is now in Las Vegas. The Raiders
added Hooper. They also added Oj Howard after moving on
from Darren Waller. Then they turn around draft Michael Mayer, who,
depending on who you ask, might be the most well
rounded tight end that came out of this draft class.
(47:28):
So how soon does Michael Mayer become the starter in Vegas?
Speaker 3 (47:31):
My hope is week one. The more realistic thing I'm
thinking is probably a few weeks into this season. We
know it takes rookie tight ends a little bit to
get going, but in my expectation, like the second half
of the season should be the Michael Mayers show at
tight end there not Austin Hooper.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
I think so too. I mean, I think you know
the old adage about tight ends taking a little bit
longer to kind of get going because they're asked to
do so much. But I think Mayor is a guy
who can come in and immediately get on the field,
And I just do think it's not gonna be very
long before you're gonna see Michael Mayer as the guy there,
(48:07):
you know, O J. Howard. As much as we want
him to be that guy, I mean, at this point
in his career, I just don't think it's gonna happen
for him. Austin Hooper has had a nice run at
tight end, but you know, I think we also we've
seen the ceiling for him at this point too. We
sort of know who he is, Michael Mayer, we're still
really excited about. So I think he's gonna get you know,
(48:28):
he's gonna get the chance fairly early. I think to
be the starter for the Raiders. So there you go.
Those are some of our winners lose. I know we
had a whole lot more names, but this show could
have been two hours long, and we have to get
to the fun point to get to the meat of
what we wanted to do here today, which is the
return of Florio's film Festival. Took a few weeks off
because there was this thing called the NFL Draft. I
(48:49):
don't know, something like that.
Speaker 3 (48:51):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
This week Desperado nineteen ninety five the quick synopsis. Former
musician and gun slinger El Mariachi arrives at a small
Mexican border town after being away for a long time.
His past quickly catches up with him, and he soon
gets entangled with the local drug Kingpinbucho and his gang.
I would take issue with some of that synopsis because
I don't know that his pass caught up with him
(49:13):
as much as he went looking for it. Yeah, but
just some quick facts about it. At least August twenty fifth,
nineteen ninety five, with a budget of seven million dollars,
grossed twenty five million dollars worldwide, so definitely a success.
I always ask you if there are any unanswered questions,
but there's not a lot of thinking that goes on
in this movie. No.
Speaker 3 (49:34):
The only thing I kind of came away from was like, uh,
where did he Where did these two? Like I know
they're his friends, but the two other guys who have
guitar case? We yes, yeah, Like where where? And why
does he know these two?
Speaker 2 (49:49):
Like, I mean, other than they were in a mariachi
group together. That's about all I can feel. I mean,
I would love to see a backstory. If they would
ever go back and do a backstory on those three guys,
that'd be interesting.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
My biggest question was like why did why was guitar
case your weapon of choice? Like I understand for him,
like he goes into the bars, He's like, oh, I'm
just carrying the guitar. And I even thought it was
really cool, like when they first search him and they
open it up and it is just the guitar. I
thought that was really cool. But his other two friends
(50:20):
took it a step too far where they made the
guitar cases the weapon like the one dude is legitimately
just moving his arms like this and machine just shooting
machine guns. And then the other guy, which which Albert
pointed out those stands with his leg all the way up.
Speaker 2 (50:35):
Yeah. Well, because you can't have a guitar case rocket
launcher and not have a cool stance to fire it.
You just can't stand there like a nitwit and fire it.
It's like one, how many rockets can this guitar case fit?
He is shooting endless rockets? And but it was.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
It was a fun movie. It The only other thing
takeaway I had was uh buco. He needs to take
his gang for some tar get practiced, because they are
the worst shots I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (51:03):
I mean, they are the descendants from Stormtroopers basically is
what they are. Because they are they are terrible.
Speaker 3 (51:09):
There's one scene in the first time he goes to
the bar. You've seen this movie, Like, he's running times
before you across the bar, yes, and the bar is
smaller than this room, it looks like, and they're all
on one side with machine guns and he's just running
across the bar and they are not hitting him at all,
not at all, but he doesn't miss.
Speaker 2 (51:28):
He is at some point just throwing bullets at people
almost and he's hitting people. I mean just the way
he's firing, it's like he's just slinging bullets out of
the gun. I mean, he was straight up, you know,
NBA point guard behind the back shooting people. It was insane.
The amount of the number of angles from which Antonio
(51:50):
Banderis was killing bad guys in this movie. A few
other fun facts. The film cost approximately seven million dollars
to make, which is a thousand times the amount of
money that Robert Rodriguez spent to make El Mariachi, which
is actually the technically the prequel to this one. This
was going to be originally an English language remake of
(52:10):
El Mariachi. I was telling you before the show, this
is technically a sequel, but basically it's just El Mariachi
with a bigger budget.
Speaker 3 (52:19):
So in El Mariachi, does is he going because someone
killed the because someone killed his woman?
Speaker 2 (52:25):
Yes, so so he's going after that.
Speaker 3 (52:27):
Technically, then you could say he gets remarried and then
she gets killed again, and then he gets with another
girl and almost gets her killed at some point.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
It seems like bad news for her at some point
that you had to look in the mirror and be like,
I'm the problem.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
Maybe it's it's not all everyone else, it's me.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
It's me. I'm the problem. Speaking of which, Carolina who
was played by Samahayak in the movie, Jennifer Lopez tried
out for that role, which I don't know. I don't
know that it works.
Speaker 3 (52:55):
I was gonna say I wouldn't have complained, but I
I don't. I think it was cast properly.
Speaker 2 (53:00):
Yeah, I don't think. I don't think it works with
j Low in that role. When Desperado hit theater, Salmajaiak
took her parents and brothers to see it, but made
them go into the lobby when the sex scene was played.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
That wasn't a scene that I was like, it didn't
need to be in the movie.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
I mean, it didn't need to be in the movie. No,
But you know, Robert Rodriguez understands the you know, the
need for gratuitousness. Basic.
Speaker 3 (53:23):
It was very nineties too, like not just that, but
like all the scenes were like the scene would kind
of fade into another scene. There was a lot of
nineties touches going on. The one also thing I laughed
at was the rocket launcher shoots the limo and it
barely does any damage, and then he shoots it a
second time and like the entire town blows up.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
Yes, yes, I mean, well, you know, there are not
a lot of big explosions. There was the scene where
Antonio Benders drops two grenades down and they're walking away
on the rooftop and there's an enormous explosion behind which
it looked badass but very not realistic.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
Yeah. That so that was my Like, it was an
enjoyable movie to watch, but there was a lot of
points where I did like kind of chuckle to myself.
I was like, this is it goes the route of
like almost like bad action movies, where like they overdo
the action. But and again, I like, that's what we
signed up for.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
I mean, that's the point of this right. One other
fun fact for you. During the production of the film,
director Robert Rodriguez and actor Danny Treyhill discovered that they
were second cousins, which.
Speaker 3 (54:27):
Is really funny. Also, Danny trey Hill's character was so.
Speaker 2 (54:32):
Cool and didn't say a word. He never spoke a
word in the movie.
Speaker 3 (54:36):
Like he is going to a literally going to a
gunfight with a bunch of nines and cannot be be
Like I was like, this is awesome.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
He he took a little bit of ass before they
finally took him down.
Speaker 3 (54:49):
And then when they were like this is him, we
got him, I was like, I was like, I guess
this helps, you know in the long run. But I
was like, oh, I really wanted to see the those
to fight each.
Speaker 2 (55:00):
Other, see Benderas and Trey how Fi. Yeah, it would
have been kind of fun actually just to kind of
watch that, to watch that happen, but alas we did
not get it. There was a third movie in this
trilogy called that Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which, Eh,
I don't know, Albert, I'm sure you've seen it out
of your thoughts. It's just meh. It's kind of Johnny
(55:22):
Depp is in it, so he's weird and quirky and
Johnny deppish.
Speaker 3 (55:27):
So it comes kind of full circle because uh, Tartino
was in this movie and then made Once upon a
Time in Hollywood, so I guess like kind of hit
his cameo. We were talking before the show. It was
it was pretty cool. The joke he tells isn't funny
at all, but when him cracking up at it made
me laugh.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
It's the joke itself is not funny. It's the way
he tells, yes, yeah.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
Yeah, exactly, Like when he's telling it, I was laughing,
and I was like, what he's actually saying is it's
the way like he.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
Just like starts laughing to himself, and the joke itself
is not actually funny. It also cannot be repeated on
this show.
Speaker 3 (55:58):
Steve Buscemi, I did not expect the movie to open
up with him at all, but his storytelling was great.
Speaker 2 (56:06):
Which that role was written for him. In fact, if
you watch the credits, the character's name is just Boushimi.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
I saw that. I was like, how did he get
to just be.
Speaker 2 (56:14):
Because the role was written specifically for him to do that,
so they just gave the character his last name.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
He's amazing at telling stories like that, Like, there's not
many actors who do it better.
Speaker 2 (56:26):
And you know, there's that many actors who get to
have as long a career as he does. Looking the
way he looks, that is very true. He's not a
hands he's a great actor. He's not a handsome man.
Speaker 3 (56:34):
He plays. My first introduction to him was Crazy Eyes
and mister Deed's so for like think about that, Like
he's in so many movies and I'd see them and
be like, there's Crazy Eyes until like I saw enough
of his movies that I now know who he is.
Speaker 2 (56:50):
Well, see that reminds me that there are still a
long list. We still have a long summer. So is
on the list of movies you're going to watch, and
you will see Crazy Eyes again.
Speaker 3 (56:58):
I've seen Reservoir Dogs. We don't have to watch that,
but but I have seen that that that he's great in.
All right, So I mean in the end, I mean
you mentioned that it's very nineties.
Speaker 2 (57:07):
It looks sort of dated at this point, but uh,
you know, would you willingly watch it again?
Speaker 3 (57:12):
Yeah? I think it holds up if you're going into
it being like this is a nineties action movie, if
you expect it to compare to like Fast X, which
is about to come out, Yeah, you're gonna be disappointed
in that. But uh yeah, no, I think it held
it that everything was super nineties though, the way they
were dressed, everything, And I mean I love the nineties,
so I enjoyed it. I definitely would watch it again.
(57:35):
It's funny, though, how many people in this room and
other people I spoke to were like, I haven't seen
that movie in so long, I barely remember it, and
I'm like, I'd watch it again.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
I mean, look, there's there's really not much to remember about, folks.
You know, the rocket launcher guitar case man out for revenge,
blasts everyone in his way. The end, That's what happened.
Speaker 3 (57:55):
Do you think he got his satisfaction because he was like,
maybe I will.
Speaker 2 (57:59):
I think I will. I think he did. I mean,
in the end, he has to spoiler alert, he has
to kill his own brother. Uh in the movie. The
movie is thirty years old. Guys like that spoiler at
this point, Uh, he has to kill his own brother.
But he ends up with a new woman at apparent
he has found a new love. I will say that
for someone who massacred half of a town, he had
(58:20):
very little urgency to actually leave town.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
Also, I I totally the guns in the sleeves was
a cool old ass. Yeah, and I get that he
would kill his brother in that moment. There was also
like fifty point at him. He's not walking.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Out of that. Yeah, yeah, he did have to slay
the army behind Boucho afterwards, but again like afterwards, he's
also I get it, he wants to, you know, save
this child who was shot during the battle, but you
just killed a lot of people, like maybe get out
of town. And he didn't really see him.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
In a hurry, and I know, like so he went
back and picked up the guitar case. But when he
threw it, I'm like, there's no way you are not
going to after what you just.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
Did, You're gonna need that guitar case. Again. I was
just magic coul you might just running across the guitar
case full of guns in the middle of you like
on the side of the road.
Speaker 3 (59:09):
The thing that they did a good job with was
making it seem like he had been like town to
town already, like he was such a well known.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
Oh yeah, the legend has grown. That was great. That
was a really cool touch. Without it, I was trying
to be like a six degrees of the NFL for
this movie, and it didn't take me very long. Because
Fred Williamson, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs back
and I believe the sixties, I was in from dut Dawn,
which was written by Tarantino and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Wow,
I'm sure if I went deeper, I probably could have
(59:38):
found more. But my head hurt.
Speaker 3 (59:39):
Can we start doing this for every movie now.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
In the NFL? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (59:44):
Because I'm not good at those games, but I always
find super interesting when people are.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
I was trying to, like, somehow link it to Pitch
Perfect too, because the Green Bay Packers feature heavily and
pitch Perfect too.
Speaker 3 (59:55):
Okay, I've never seen Pitch.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
Perfect me neither. I just know that that Clay Matthews
and like a chunk of the Packer offensive line was
in them.
Speaker 3 (01:00:02):
I hope we could just connect one of these nineties
action movies to eighty for Brady. That's my goal this summer.
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
All right, we'll work on that. So our next film
in the film festival. You mentioned Fast X, which comes
out in a little over a week. I think I've
mentioned on this show. I am nearing the end of
my Fast series. Rewatch. I still have to watch I
haven't watched nine yet. That's the one I want to
talk to. I haven't gotten nine yet. That's gonna be
(01:00:27):
hopefully the next couple of days. But with Fast X
coming out, I want to go all the way back
to the first Fast and Furious movie and not watch that,
but watch Point Break from nineteen ninety one, because if
you like The Fast and the Furious, you will like
Point Break because they are the same film. Just replaced
cars with surfing, and you've got pretty much the same movie.
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
I'm so happy we're doing this. And you said this
because for years my old roommate was like, dude, you
like Fast and the Furious, watch Point Break.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
It's the same movie, and I don't like the movie.
Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
I'm like, no, well it can't be. And now I
told him that and he was like, why didn't you
listen to me sooner? So he's very happy that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
I'm the same film. So next week on this show,
we will talk about Point Break from nineteen ninety one,
not the remake they did a few years ago, because
that was trash. It's going to be Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze,
Lori Petty the whole nineties as a guest. It is
super nineties, it is nineteen ninety one. It is amazing.
We will talk about it next week on this show,
so look forward to that should be a lot of fun.
(01:01:27):
It will help us get ready for Fast X for
those of us who celebrate that holiday. In the meantime,
this has been a beefy, lengthy show, so it's time
for us to probably put it down for now. That'll
do it for this edition of the NFL Fantasy Football Podcast.
They happy, save and healthy, do good and live well,
enjoy the week and everybody, and we'll talk to you
next week. Wo
