Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Welcome to Good Morning Football. It is Monday, July twenty first.
I'm Sarah Walsh in for my good friend Jamie Ernuld.
Joined here in La by Mantiteo Cynthia Friedland. Our guy
West Wilson is hanging out in New York. He sent, hey,
I want my solo studio there in New York City.
So West, we we just gave it to you. Manti
Camp's opening up.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
I was like, Kyle in here, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Football started this week. We're like, we're ready to go.
Teams are already in action. Mantai, you get a little
fomo when this time of years.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Yeah, we got some fomo. West.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I know you got some fomo out there in New York.
We miss you, buddy. It's football. She met b let's roll.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
Its good Morning Football.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Welcome to the breakfast table, Sarah, Mantai, Cynthia here in
Los Angeles. Wes hanging out in Kyle Brand's office in
Lower Manhattan. I am sure it is a very elaborate,
very fancy fancy office there, Wes. How are you doing there?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
My friend doing well?

Speaker 6 (01:21):
I was telling the guy that it smells like Kyle
Brandt in this small studio.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Explain, what does that smell like? Wes, What does that?
What does that smell like? Brightness?

Speaker 6 (01:30):
It smells like hard work, It sells like angry runs, grit, determination,
not pat love.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
All the good things, well, we love it, We love
having you, and we wish you were sitting at the table.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Here with us.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
But somebody's got to hold down Kyle's part of the country.
Let's get to it right where we're ready to go.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Football has started.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
The Eagles received their Super thank You Manti received their
Super Bowl fifty nine rings and a ceremony over the weekend.
Check out their reactions to seeing those rings for the
first time. Some of the details of the ring features
one hundred and forty five diamonds celebrating the Eagles one
hundred and forty five points scored in the playoffs. That's sweet,
and circling the top of that ring, eighteen green stones

(02:14):
honoring the Eagles NFL record tying eighteen combined victories in
the regular season and the playoffs. And you push a
button and Eagles wings pop out. Cool know Head coach
Nick Sirianni, Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurry showing off their
bling with their signal caller. Philadelphia hoping to win the

(02:36):
division this year. But remember, and this is a wild
status meet, there has not been a repeat winner in
the NFC East since the Eagles did it back in
twenty one through two thousand and four, which is just
absolutely wild. And then you think about some of these
other divisions, they haven't had a repeat winner there. I
had research to look into it. Kansas City's won the

(02:58):
AFC at each of the last nine seasons. You're talking
about a division that hasn't repeated. Casey's done it nine straight,
Buffalo's on the AFC East in each of the last
five seasons, Tampa Bay's won the NFC South and each
last four and yet no repeats lately in the NFC East.
We want to get into Jalen Hurts Super Bowl MVP,
an off season of sports talk and lists. This happens
every year. I mean, this is the overreaction, people arguing

(03:21):
he's a system guy, not a top five This is
crazy talk. Cynthia, what do you expect from hers this season?

Speaker 3 (03:26):
I don't what a system I don't think he's a
system guy at all. Everyone's a system guy to some
degree though, so whatever, I expect more of the same.
The toush push is still a part of the game.
You know what's going to happen, the toush push. I
still think we're going to see AJ Brown's number one.
I think actually Dallas Goddard Fantasy fans maybe put him
a little higher on your rankings this season, but we

(03:47):
kind of know who he is and the fact that
the old line this year is all going to be
not dealing with Jason Kelsey's departure. They're all together. The
chemistry will happen faster, They'll be who they are. We'll
see them be in great form right away. I just
want to know how to Barkley. I want to know
does he get extra diamonds on him, because it feels

(04:10):
like he should get some extra diamonds on this. But
Jalen Hurts, I think we know exactly who we're going
to see more of the following. Expectations will yet again
be high, but when are they not. Eagles fans are
very very expecting of them going to the super Bowl
all the time, So when I'm looking at this, we
know who he is. Like more of the same, and
by the way, more of the same means he's awesome,
not a system guy.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
So yeah, yeah, Sophia, I'm going to follow up question,
why do you think Saquon should have more diamonds on
his well.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Because I feel like that was a huge difference maker
in this past season. I think that the kind of
surprise pact people are like, oh, Saquon, you know, they
knew he was going to be good, but did they
know he was going to be this good? Where though
all of those yards of yak, maybe he gets one
diamond for every yard of right, I don't think there
are enough done bace.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
On his performance.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
So yeah, it means for the Eagles, And I think
that's why a lot of the conversation around Jalen Hurts
is because of guys like Saquon. I said on this
show last week that I think that Jalen Hurts and
I that Jalen Hurts is a system quarterback. And I'm
trying to change that narrative that being a system player
in any type of team or any type of franchise
is a bad thing, because it's not If you're an

(05:13):
NFL football player, you would hope that you go to
a team that utilizes your shrinks the way that the
Eagles utili Jalen Hurt shrinks.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Little story.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
In twenty thirteen, we signed Dwight Freenie over over to
the San Diego Chargers from Indianapolis. Dwight Freennie is a
Hall of Fame defensive end, a Hall of Fame rusher.
He is in the Hall of Fame because he sacked
the quarterback a lot of times. But in our system
in San Diego, we had him dropping into coverage. And
let me tell you guys here this morning, if you
ever saw Dwight Freenie drop into coverage, you would not

(05:43):
think that he would make it to the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Dwight Freeni made.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
It to a Hall of fame because he sacked quarterbacks.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
The Porsche car, Guys, anybody drive a Porch.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
I don't drive a Porsche, but I've driven one.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
I don't know. But do you take a Porsche off roading? No,
you don't.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
You wouldn't if you ever took a Porsche off roading,
you think like, this is the worst car ever.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
If he used a Porsche the way that the Porsche
is supposed.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
To be use, you understand that this is one of
the greatest cars ever.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Jalen Hurts is a Porsche, and.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
The Philadelphia Eagles use him the way a porscheuld be you.
So again, guys, I think there's this negative stigma about
being a system player. I don't think there's anything negative
about being a system player and being in a system
that Jalen Hurts has been has given them a Super Bowl,
has given him a Super Bowl MVP, and so I
think going into this year, he's going to continue to

(06:32):
your point, Santy, he's going to continue doing what he's
been doing this whole time.

Speaker 6 (06:36):
We always knock people for having good players around them,
which I find.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
To be crazy. But one of the things that people.

Speaker 6 (06:42):
Said about Patrick Mahomes when he was I don't know
all of his early success was like, he's a system
quarterback from the Andy Reid system.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Jalen Hurts has been to two Super Bowls.

Speaker 7 (06:51):
With Nick Sirianni. Are we liking to sit here and pretend?

Speaker 6 (06:54):
I mean, we know Nick Sierran, he's not talked about,
is like a top five coach in the NFL. He's
gone to two Super Bowls with someone that we don't
view as super high up on the pedestal of NFL coaches.
So there's so many ways to just knock people, and
I feel like that's what the internet does these days.
The ultimate goal is to go to Super Bowls, and
he's done it twice, Like you shouldn't be asking for

(07:15):
more from him. We talk a lot about a lot
about other quarterbacks who haven't been to Super Bowls. Josh
Allen Lamar, like, leave this guy alone. He's clearly doing
what he should be doing as a quarterback with a
coach that we don't view to be that special. So
if he's assistant quarterback, whatever, keep going to super Bowls.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Shaldherds Well, and I also think Wes there's just this
idea of like, whoever's on top, you have to find
a reason to poke holes, right if the Chiefs are
win you, I mean, it's just how it works. So
if you win the super Bowl, you better believe everyone's
coming from you. Everyone's going to tell you what's wrong
with you. And by the way, at the end of
the day, where were the Eagles on Friday?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
They were at their ring.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Ceremony, so pretty sure they probably don't care. Taking a
look at the rest of the division we mentioned not
a repeat winner in that division. From one to four
they had a repeat and never since then. So how
do the Cowboys, how do the Commanders? How do the
Giants keep that streak alive? Hoping that there is not
a repeat division winner since two thousand and four, Cynthia.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Well, to me, this one narrows down to the Commanders.
I'm not there yet with I'm not there yet with
the Giants. I'm not there yet with the Cowboys even.
But the Commanders really do have a good opportunity to
dethrone the Eagles. Why because they have a quarterback. They've
got the guy who works with their offensive coordinator, Cliff Kingsbury.
You know last year we were saying, hey, Cliff Kingsbury,

(08:31):
have it after nine games? He would the answer, Yes,
he absolutely does. Of course, you need to make Terry
McLaurin happy. He doesn't seem to be happy right now.
We'll figure out his contract situation. But now you have
this interesting chess piece in Deebo Samuels. And now I'm
looking around and I'm saying, Okay, there'll be a little
bit of a slump as defenses really do adjust to him.
They are now having specific game plans to tailor to

(08:53):
what Jayden Daniels does. But I think Jalen Daniels has
the stuff to be able to get past that with
a lot of Grayson, with a lot of wins, and
I'm looking at their schedule and it is is kin
of bit easier than the Eagles as well.

Speaker 6 (09:08):
I'm looking at my notes and I also have nothing
about the Giants or the Cowboys.

Speaker 7 (09:14):
I think we all are all in on the Commanders here.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
I don't think we talk about this enough.

Speaker 6 (09:19):
As far as like how to get to the playoffs
or win your division.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
But beat the Eagles twice.

Speaker 6 (09:26):
And I think you're kind of set up to be
a front runner in the NFC East. I know, obviously,
I don't think a team would ever publicly say like
we're building our team to focus on one team. But
I think you've beat the Eagles two times, and that
division's yours. So I'm not saying entirely, build your roster
to beat the Eagles, but focus on that.

Speaker 7 (09:47):
I don't know, throw pads on on Thursday before you
play the Eagles and let's see what happens.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
Well, Wes, you talked about building a roster and Sarah
you mentioned poking holes there's a lot of holes in
this defense now, in the Philadelphia Eagles defense, and so
my main concern going into this season is you look
at all of these departures. These are veteran guys. Okay
talking about Darius Slay, Brandon Graham retired, Like, these are

(10:11):
veteran guys in your locker room. And there's there's there's
two types of categories.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
There's the guys that play.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
There's there's the players, and then there's those those that keep.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Them all together.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
A lot of these guys on this list are players
that keep that locker room together. So the only thing
that I can see happening in the NFC East, I
do agree that the Commanders pose the biggest threat to
the to the Eagles, but the Eagles pose the biggest
threat to themselves. I want to see, can this defense rally?
Can these defense? Can this defense come back together after

(10:43):
all the holes in that defense from the departures and
repeat Vic Fangio, You already know that he's going to
get them going as far as you know, making sure
that they're aligned right, and that makes sure making sure
that the scheme is fit to what they want to do.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
But when you lose a Brandon Graham when you lose
a Darius Slay.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
These are guys that help your younger guys understand what
the expect what the expectations are for that team. So
I know that there's a lot of conversation of which
team could take them out. In my opinion, how they're built.
The only ones that can take them out are the Eagles.
So if they're able to come together and find some
chemistry early, it's going to be scary for them because

(11:21):
offensively they're just it's just continuing to roll.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
It's going to be something good for Eagles fans.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Here's what I think is interesting. Every season, right, there's
this carryover effect. And at this time last year, I
don't think anyone was going the Commanders or They're going
to be this hot darling of a team. Every year
there's someone that there's this team that turns into this
darling and then you just expect it to carry over.
You always expect it to carry over. We can go
back a couple of years. Remember the Jaguars were darling

(11:46):
for a second. They go on that run, and because
they went on that run late and Trevor was hot
and everyone was so happy in Jacksonville. Everyone expects the
next year, like they were just going to take off
where they were a season ago. That didn't happen. There
was a situation the Texans were the darling and they
didn't drop off necessarily. They were obviously in the postseason again,
but there were this team that no one was expecting.
No one was saying, Hey, this Texans team is going

(12:08):
to be every year there is that team. And so
I think it's easy to slate Eagles they win the
Super Bowl, Commanders coming off a hot season. What room
is there in that conversation Cynthia that it could be
a Giant who no one is counting on right now,
or the Cowboys who's got a lot of question marks
around it but certainly have some really big name superstar players.

Speaker 6 (12:31):
Right.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
It just never is going to however we say, is
going to go one, two, three, four, It's not going
to end up that way. So given that, I would say,
give me Giants or Cowboys. Why you could make the
argument that one of those two could come out of
I don't want to say nowhere because I don't think
that's the case with the Cowboys. But it just doesn't
always slate the way we think it's going to slap.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
I mean the answer is Stack Prescott. So for me,
the Cowboys. The opportunity that the Cowboys have, you know,
they'll they'll pay their players. This is always happens. We
always go, oh, is everyone going to be Here's Micah
going to be there? And it always happens, Like in August,
Jerry pulls out them, brings truck and rolls it backwards
and they pay them. So I think when you're looking
at the opportunity there, that to me is the one

(13:10):
that is the threat. CD Lamb. Of course, already Bonifide
number one wide receiver we have. You know, anytime you
have continuity, they got a really nice right guard. I
understand that that's a weird thing to say, but when
you have a first bout Hall of Famer retire.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
We're to say give them some love.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
It's I love the old lineman.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
You know this.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
But that's the one where I think the Cowboys could
be the ones to kind of to needle for that
top mark. And you're right, everyone does come kind of
out of nowhere. And uncertainty at the quarterback position for
the Giants is my reason for picking the Cowboys. When
you don't have a quarterback that you can rely on.
You don't know exactly what's going on. That's when we
don't know why. So that's maybe why we discounted the
Commanders last season, even though Jane Daniels was so highly regarded.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
And you know, it doesn't get closed and what doesn't
get headlines is really nice right guard, really nice.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
The right guard.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
But like that's just the headlines aren't going there. But Cynthia,
you gave me a nice little tea up to Ian Rappaport,
who you want to bring in here because of you're saying, oh,
are we going to pay Michael Parsons? This is an
that has the answers at least we hope Cowboys starting
camp today. I know Jane Slater is on our way.
I give us the latest. Is Michaeh Parsons getting paid?
What is happening with that contract?

Speaker 8 (14:16):
Well, I'm sure Michael Parsons will get paid, but it
doesn't seem like anything is imminent there. The Dallas Cowboys
and Micah Parsons have had conversations surrounding a long term
contract extension and no doubt making the highest paid non
quarterback in the NFL Cowboys reports today expect Michael Parsons
to be there, no surprise. Everyone is known for months
the Micah Parsons will be there, will be on time,

(14:39):
will be with his team in fact, really he is
content to wait. And we've seen several big name edge
players get paid this offseason. For Miles Garrett, now TJ.
Watt the latest forty one million dollars per year. Micah
Parsons set to make likely more than them, likely the last.
Aiden Hutchinson, another one the Lion's Edge, could also get
paid because Michael likely comes in at the top of

(15:01):
the market. He is fine waiting and he has said
that he knows his money is coming. He has already
earned it, so he will be there present with his teammates.
We'll see how much he does in practice actually, but
he is expected to be there. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals
also have some work to get done before things kick
into gear for them.

Speaker 7 (15:20):
Trey Hendrickson, they're.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
Excellent edge rusher's sack leader in the NFL last year,
still wants a new contract, still wants to get paid.
Set to make sixty million dollars this year. Not expected
to play for that one at least a raise likely
as coming to Bengals have made several offers, including a
recent one over the course of the last couple of days.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Today is a huge.

Speaker 8 (15:39):
Day for Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals. We'll see
if they're able to get a deal done that features
a big race for him this year at potentially years
after that. Of course, Kock is ticking for Cincy, as
by the way, it is for Shamar Stewart, the first
round rookie, the only first rounder still unsigned bongs in Cincy.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
The clock is sticking on. Ian Summer, it's over. We're here,
we're in training camp, and I would say that life
as you know is over, but I don't think you
ever stopped working, and so I don't know that it's
drastically changed. Insiders coming your way this evening with Ian
who will be in this chair for the next twelve hours.
Judy Batista going to be on that show with him.
They're going to have all the latest news from around
the NFL. Plus they are heading out to Cowboys Camp.

(16:21):
Jane Slater's also heading out there Chargers Camp. Omar Rui
is going to be hanging out. It is officially Camp season.
It's Insiders tonight at seven eastern. We're going to have
all those reports still coming up on GMFB. Cynthia, you've
got your top ten Fantasy wide receivers.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Someone's missing, so you're going to see that. You're like, whoa,
there's a guy in here that has been a top
ten for a while.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
It's a lot of good things.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
That's a tease. That's a good teach, great tease. What
do you got, Mantai, Well, we.

Speaker 4 (16:49):
Got We're going to tell you why New York Jets
quarterback Justin Fields will be a success in the big
app of this season.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
We're off and running. It's jim FB on a Monday.
Let's get it.

Speaker 5 (17:08):
Good, mon football.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Justin Fields is in the Big Apple and that is
where we're going to start going for two. Fields started
in Chicago, then found himself in Pittsburgh. Hasn't worked out
yet for Justin Fields. But Cynthia, tell me why the
Jets are going to be the charm for Fields. His
head coach, Aaron Glenn, I have the utmost faith in

(17:30):
and in.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
Part it is because he brought a lot of his
people with him from Detroit. So if you're looking at
Tanner Engstrand the offensive coordinator. This is the guy we's
worked with for five seasons in Detroit. He was the
passing game coordinator for the past too. He learned from
Ben Johnson. We talk about these trees, right that. You
have the McVay tree, you have the you know, the
Shanahan tree. Well what about the Ben Johnson tree. I mean,

(17:52):
we'll get to see what happens with him as a
first time head coach. But I think that this is
the type of thing where the culture feels different. The
players I've talked to you on the team are excited.
I know Barrett Wilson's so, so, so happy, and that
gratitude from both he and Sauce was real. So when
I'm looking at the opportunity to succeed, when your coach
believes in you, then you are going to have a

(18:14):
much better opportunity to succeed. They'll also create Reese Halls
there like, there's a lot of great things for him
to help him out. And arm On memboo, we have
to right tackle. We'll go.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
I'm just gonna go all thrown out, the names, keep
throwing out the names, all alignment, happy to help you.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
What he got West it won't work.

Speaker 6 (18:34):
I like Jets and Fields, and I like Aaron Glenn.
I think I think they're both. They seem like to
be the right guys for it. But as long as
it says Jets on the side of his helmet, I
don't see it happening.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Like the montage that.

Speaker 6 (18:47):
We just played were it was a bunch of highlights
and then the Jets highlights are still practice footage without
pads on, Like it just feels like that's what the
Jets have been since Mark Sanchez. Like, I want to
see one quarterback have success and I'm trying to think
of the last time that it even felt like there
was progress, and I can't think of it. I want

(19:09):
them to do well, rooting for them, but I just
until they prove to me that they can.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
Do anything right, I'm not I'm not gonna buy it.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Sounds harsh, but I love it. But keeping it real, West,
I love it.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
You're talking about the Jets side on the thing on
the side of his helmet. The reason why I think
that Justin Fields is going to have a lot of
success this year is because he doesn't have to look
to the sideline the entire game. See when you're a
player and you're constantly worried that the guy that keeps
subbing you in and out is a threat to come
sub you out that game. It put you in a
position where you're going to have to make some You

(19:44):
feel the need to make some wild plays when the
right play is to actually take the check down. You
see w when you're in this in the middle of
a play and you're trying to figure out who do
I throw this ball to and there's a guy that's
wide open, but he's only five yards from the line
of scrimmage, there's a thought that goes into your head
that says, man, but the guy on the sideline could
make that throw. So how about I make a throw
that I know this guy won't make. How About I

(20:05):
throw the ball to Garrett Wilson on a ten yard
dig but he's double covered. But I got to make
this play. I got to make this wild play. So
when you don't have that dynamic, when Justin Fields understands
that he is the man for the New York Jets,
he's not in the situation that he was in with
Pittsburgh that he can go out there and he can play,
relax that he knows that if he makes one or

(20:27):
two or three mistakes that he's not going to get
pooed from the game. That allows him to just settle,
That allows him to be free and make the right
play instead of the wild play.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
And not to mention free agency.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
In order, the windows started on the tent, they could
reach out to players on the tent on March tenth.
Guess when the Jets reached out to Justin Fields on
the tenth. He could officially sign on the twelfth. Guess
when he signed on the twelfth. So what I'm trying
to get to is he was signed from the beginning.
So when the Jets looked at their roster in the offseason,
when Aaron Glenn and the crew looked at their roster

(20:58):
in the offseason, they said, out of all the things
we have and out of all the quarterbacks available.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Justin Fields is the answer. That's the guy we want.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
And that just shows when they signed him, he didn't
have to wait long in free agency. So I think
with those two dynamics and those two components coming together,
I think he set up for the most success with
the Jets.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Yeah, and I just like that story that like, this
is our guy. Everybody knows, even just sitting here, everybody knows.
If somebody believes in you, it makes all the difference
in the world. Well, I have a question for you
actually as you were talking, and this popped in my
head because you said it's a Jets thing, right, and
it's not going to matter because he's got a Jets
on his topic. I'm just curious what you think who
has a better season the Jets last quarterback Aaron Rodgers
and Pittsburgh or the Jets current quarterback playing for the Jets.

Speaker 6 (21:40):
I'll go Bias answer, then we'll go Jets Aaron Rodgers
has I've been over it for a few years now,
so good luck justin Field's and the Jets.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
But I want to point out one thing.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
Cynthia said that Garrett Wilson's happy and they just signed
that deal. I think that actually is super telling. Like
we can watch again in the practice highlights, but I
think he's kind of been very vocal about where he
said with the Jets for the last few years, and
to see him feel like maybe he's home and it's
all coming together. As someone who was there during the
dark days, I think that says a lot about their future.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
In a good light.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
Okay, so you mentioned that we're just seeing the Jets
and you know they're not in pads. We're showing practice.
But I'm gonna show you some real game footage that
just happened. That's incredible. You don't have to wait for
NFL Sundays. On Saturday, Bryson Wright of the Jags Elite
made a spectacular one handed touchdown reception. I mean, how
many times can you watch this thing? It's insane. He
went on to win the tournament MVP. Wonder why as

(22:35):
Jaguars Elite captured the U fourteen Voice title at the
NFL BLAG Championships in Canton, Ohio yesterday. Patrick Mahomes, this
is when you know you're good. I'm pretty sure he
kind of knows it. They're This is when you know
you're good. Patrick Mahomes, Yo, what exactly like this is?
You have to say anything? An unbelievable catch by that

(22:55):
young man, the fourteen year old. By the way, he
scored ten touchdowns in seven What did the other nine
look like in seven games this weekend? So that had
everyone buzzing all weekend long and trying to compare that
catch that you saw to all time NFL catches West
When you saw that catch, what NFL catch came to

(23:16):
mind for you?

Speaker 6 (23:16):
Okay, So I was trying to think of backhanded catches
and there's like, not actually that man, Like that is
such a crazy play to make that you're it's your
inside hand, back handed, Like that's all time. But the
first time I watched that highlight, he's like in traffic
for like a good six seconds before he makes the catch.
It took me back to Justin Jefferson's fourth down catch.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
Against the Bills. I think it was twenty twenty two, and.

Speaker 6 (23:42):
He's just he's getting roughed up for a while, and
a lot of one handed catches. There's one on one.
He was in the middle of a lot of it.
Here look at him between four dudes. And also the
moment that was fourth and sixteen, fourth and seventeen and
they ended up winning this game. That was just incredible
and brought me back to that just a in traffic,

(24:06):
lot of crazy hand positions. It was all time.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Cindy, what you got, Well, it's funny that you brought
up Justin Jefferson because his coach, Keenan mccardo was once
a buck. It was a while ago, and this reminds
me of one of his catches against the Panthers. Here
we go, he's going up against end. There we go,
a little vintage in traffic kind of. It's not the
outside hand motion that Wes brought up, but it is

(24:30):
kind of like an in traffic kind of. I don't know.
It's the fourth quarter, there was like four minutes left.
It was a really important game. It was two thousand
and three. It was a really big deal.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
And three it looks like it's like nineteen sixty when
you look at night. But by the way, this is
how spoiled we are. That footage comes up and we're like, whoa,
I can't even see that.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
You know, exactly thirty six yards, you know, no big deal.
But I'm looking at this one and I'm like, all right,
I knew there was, like I just remember this one.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
So that was Wait a minute.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
So okay.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
So we're in makeup this morning and we're talking about
these catches, and Cyndya's like, oh yeah, so I'm gonna
go with this Keenan catch. This rant like not a
playoff game, not a like I mean, I'm like, where
did you why would this be in the lexicon of
things you filed it like why this particular catch and
tell the folks why this stands out to you?

Speaker 3 (25:14):
Because my neighbor, missed doctor McCardell. I was always like McCardell, mccardal, McCardell.
It was very confusing for me. I was obviously you know, oka,
miss Michigan doctor. He's an orthetic surgeon. You should go
see him. I'm sure he's great. So that's what I
remember growing up. I could I just this is why.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
You remember this catch because he had the same name
as your name.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Well it was pronounced it pronounce McCardell, McCardell, And it
was very confusing for me. Okay, there you got, little
man time. What do you got on your catch? Just
a good catch?

Speaker 4 (25:40):
Well, I know you guys were going to go offense
and everybody would just want to go office.

Speaker 1 (25:44):
But this is one of.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
The best catches that I've ever seen, and I think
everybody can agree with me, as Troy Polamalu's where he
literally caught the ball with his little fingers about centimeters,
not even inches off to the ground.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
And I know there were so many look at just
look at this guy. The tension, the focus all of that.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
Troy polamalus made these types of plays all the time.
This has to be one of the greatest catches.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
And it was in the beginning of the game.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
That's what that's what's so incredible about this this play.
But it's in the beginning of the game. There's usually
guys got to warm up a little bit, let the
game come to Troy didn't do that, and he was
ready to go from the time that he stepped into
the stadium. He was ready to make these types of plays.
And look at just imagine running to a receiver and
you're like, I'm going to make a play on the receiver.

(26:32):
Then in a split second, the ball pops out and
you're like, okay, how about I make them play on
the ball. Troy was able to make those split second decisions.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Extremely easily and extremely.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
Quick, and that's why he's one of the greatest ever
played the game. So that was mine was Troy Polamalu's
finger catch.

Speaker 6 (26:47):
Do we think it's fair to say that there's a
one hundred percent chance that that play was reviewed that
we just watched. I think so, like, no question, right, yeah,
I just you know, when you see plays and you're like,
that's going to be another twenty minutes where oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
having to make stuff up one percent that play.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
Also when you showed it's one thing seeing on video,
but that that's still the photo that we showed out.
If we can put it back up and you actually
put the photo up, that's where it's crazy because now,
I mean that is on your fingertips. And also, if
I'm the quarterback, I'm so livid, like there's no way
anybody should have ever wheeled this in that.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
It's ridiculous.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
Yeah, and then he but he just pops up as
if nothing had He pops up and continues to run.
I think anybody who would make this type of cat
should stay on the ground and just be in awe
of what they just did.

Speaker 1 (27:32):
No, Troy just he caught the ball, popped up.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
Like nothing happened, and started running a little bit.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
It's it's just insane with this man.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Dude, Welcome back to GMFB Pro Football Hall of Fame
or Super Bowl Champion In two thousand, Walter Payton NFL
Man of the Year Award winner Derek Brooks believes that
education is the foundation for future success and when his
head coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tony Dungey didn't
spend any time in his first team meeting talking about
winning football games. He found his purpose.

Speaker 9 (28:03):
I hate the dumb jug stereotype. When I was named
the player of the year in high school, I refused
to take a picture on the field. I made them
take a picture of me in the library. I believe
God gave me this platform of the NFL to feed
this mission bigger than football. That has led me to
be involved with education and it became the foundation of

(28:26):
der Brooks Charities where we would use the tool of
education for kids to earn the right to go experience
things outside those walls. If you show kids that you
believe in them, they'll respond. They would want to go
share the journey with others behind them. I would pray
that the young generation would be so engulf with seeing

(28:46):
others blessed that they get consumed with that. Listening to
the need and find a pathway to serve. Doing good
does not have a shelf life your career does. Let's
go change the world.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
Manti your thoughts on Derek Brooks, the player and the man, Well, it's.

Speaker 1 (29:08):
A beautiful thing.

Speaker 4 (29:09):
And he reminds me of the saying that says people
aren't going to remember what you do, They're not going
to remember what you say, but they will remember how
you made him feel. And Derek Brooks has made so
many people feel a belief, a belief in themselves, a
belief in their abilities, not only as a football player,
but as a human being. I talked to Joe Berry,
who has a linebacker coach for me for the San Diego.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Chargers, also coach Derek.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
Brooks for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when they won the
Super Bowl, and I asked him about Derek Brooks, Derek Brooks,
and I said, Coach, tell me something about him. He said, listen,
you've heard all the stories, but the greatest thing about
him is he's a Hall of Fame player, but he's
a better human being. He's a better husband, he's a
better father. He reminds me a lot of Scotti Scheffler.
And you think about these guys that don't identify with

(29:50):
the sport that they play. Derek Brooks. You may not
remember how many tackles he's made in his career, but
you'll definitely remember all the impact that he's made in
this world, and I'm so excited to be just even
in his presence at times, to just feel that energy
coming off off of him, the humility, the love, and
the passion to give back. So, Sarah, it's just one
of those guys that you point to and say, hey,

(30:11):
do it this way.

Speaker 1 (30:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
And I'm fortunate to live in the Tampa Bay area,
so I see him often and I can tell you
the stuff he does around the community. One really cool
thing recently, so the Bucks have unveiled the Creamsickle jerseys
throwbacks to seventy six. It's their fiftieth anniversary. They have
this video that they put out and it's called The
Original Returns and it's kind of you know, it goes
around this jersey being unveiled again. But they have in

(30:32):
this video. If you haven't, you can probably see it
on YouTube. They have these legends that come back and
start talking to the guys, like Baker comes into the
film room. I'm sorry, Brondi Barber comes in the film
room while Baker's in there. And at the end there
is Mike Evans standing in the lobby of One Buck
Place and Derek Brooks comes up to Evans and he
goes I look forward to being your teammate again in Campton,

(30:55):
and it's just it's one of those moments. It gives
you chills. The folks that did that in Tampa. It's
really an incredible sort of throwback honoring the legends, and
Derek's point in that was just it was so good.
If you haven't seen it, you can head over to
the NFL Fast Channel on YouTube or a special on
Friday as we lead up to a celebration of Walter
Payton's birthday, where we're going to air Legacy of Legends

(31:18):
Impact through Service that is exclusively on the NFL Fast Channel.
I don't know how often Derek Brooks has been compared
to Scottie Scheffler, but.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
Hey, he'll take it.

Speaker 2 (31:27):
He's the man. Here you go, man, Ti, We love you,
Derek Brooks.

Speaker 5 (31:41):
Good football.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Okay, so it's never too early to be drafting your
fantasy football team, but it's actually now officially not too
early to be considering who you should be drafting for
your fantasy football team. So I'm going to give you
my top ten wide receivers in reverse order. Of course,
let's go Cynthia, all right, perfect, So at number ten,
we got Drake London. Now, maybe this is low for
some people. I don't know, but I think that with

(32:04):
Michael Pennix, you're going to see a lot of great
opportunities for him to not just see the end zone,
but also just be a guy who gets a ton
of catches. You're playing PPR because that's what you should
be doing. You're gonna want to take him to me.
He is number ten at number nine. Yeah, okay, Mantai,
are you gonna be okay with this one? Because number
Nino the guy from the Chargers? I love it, Cynthia, Yeah, yeah,

(32:27):
I think you'd be into it. I think Lad McConkey
has a massive breakout season. You will notice that not
only does he appear on this list, but there's another
place in the show where he's going to turn up
as well, and you're going to want to take him
when the choices between two people. Just giving a little
bit of a foreshadowing right here, but I'm looking at
his opportunities this season and those numbers are even bigger,

(32:48):
like up in the like thirteen hundreds for a projection
that is very very high. At number eight. Leak neighbors
now fantasy and touchdowns not just necessarily the same thing.
But I think Malik Neighbors it's all about volume. This
is a guy who will consistently see volume from whomever's
under center. However this works out their route running. It's
so precise. This is one of the happiest things too

(33:11):
for Giants fans just in general. I think Malik Nighbors
absolutely number eight here. Nicocollins is next at number seven.
I don't want anyone else to take Nico Collins in
my fantasy leagues. This is one that I will absolutely
be targeting. There's some questions about who else is going
to be catching passes in this offense. So when I'm
looking at Nico Collins, this is seven, but this could

(33:31):
be conservative. It could be way up even higher. Let's
watch him in the preseason, Let's watch him in training camp.
Let's hear from all of our reporters on itc Nico
Collins could be even higher than seven. At six. Brian
Thomas Junior. I love the opportunity for Brian Thomas Junior
to take an even bigger step forward. I think it
was already awesome last season, but ten touchdowns, I think

(33:53):
that's kind of the floor. So I'm looking at Brian
Thomas Junior here, and I'm thinking Jags fans, I know
you have a lot to be excited about, but Brian
Thomas Junior, he's probably my favorite one to target for
this offense in general. Number five, I'm mona Saint Brown.
I'm a Detroit fan, but everyone knows this already. Saint Brown.
He's a guy who runs. Really the chemistry between he

(34:16):
and Jared Goff is really incredible. A'mona, It is really
fun to watch shake off these defenses. He's the most
interesting when it comes to all of the offensive pieces
here because I don't think anything really changes even though
they have a new coordinator. So for me, this is
kind of the same stat line as I see from
last year. Twelve touchdowns, about twelve hundred yards closer to
thirteen hundred. Totally fine. At number four, c D Lamb,

(34:40):
we talked about him earlier in the show. We know
Dak Prescott's known quantity. The old line. Maybe a little
bit better with Tyler book because we're going to bring
up as many offensive linemen as possible. Cde Lamb's opportunity
again really great to have a ton of volume. Maybe
this offense takes a step forward. But if there's any
time missed by any of the defenders, even better for
CD because they will be targeting him even more at

(35:02):
number three. Just across the street, Kuka Nakula, obviously the
rams you have Matthew Stafford. I watch you guys talk
about Matthew Stafford all the time. I love matt I
actually have a stat on Matthew Stafford. That's like, who
is the guy that's best after being sacked, after being pressured.
It's Matthew Stafford and he's been that way since he
entered the league. Puka Nakua his number one target. I

(35:22):
think this numbers go way, way, way up, especially because
he'll be healthier at number two. Justin Jefferson, I mean,
come on, this one seems pretty easy Justin Jefferson. Even
with some questions Mark with who his quarterback is going
to be in terms of how they operate this offense,
I don't care. It's Justin jeff I don't care Justin Jefferson.
The answer is always Justin Jefferson, and it will be

(35:43):
until you know the saw this gritting. I'm not even
to try to gritty. It's not good for me. Number one.
Everybody knows who it is. It's the guy who also
wears number one. It is uno time, Jamar Chase. If
you've been watching quarterback, you see the chemistry with his
quarterback amazing in this offense. I think this is an
interesting offense in general because what they gave up about

(36:03):
twenty five points game on defense last year. I don't
think that defense got any better. You get rid of
Louis Arrumo, you're gonna need to have even more points
on offense. So I'm looking at Jamar Chase. I think
these numbers are gonna look very similar. Now. Will he
be the triple crown winner again? I'm not sure about that,
but I think the numbers will be best in Lee.

Speaker 2 (36:21):
Okay, So here's your list. No Tyreek Hill, Nope not.

Speaker 1 (36:26):
Here's a Brown.

Speaker 3 (36:28):
AJ Brown's close, but a Jed Brown's probably like eleven
or Twell. But I told you Dallas Goddard, I think
he has a little bit more of an uptick. And
you got Saquon Barkley there for some some of the volumes.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
You know what I like. I like this guy, Brian
Thomas doing your huge season, Dylan Morton, jags pr I
see you, Cynthia knows what you're trying to sell down there.

Speaker 3 (36:47):
We get it.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
This guy had an unbelievable season. If he wasn't this
is this is my take on that. If he was
not on the Jags, if this guy was on a
New York if this guy's on the people would lose
their mind.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
I think I've lost my mind for him.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
I think what he did went more under the radar
than it definitely should have.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
What you got, Wes, What you got, Wes.

Speaker 6 (37:06):
I'm curious if CD is going to get more single
coverage with Pickens on the field with.

Speaker 7 (37:11):
Him, or if targets are going to go down.

Speaker 6 (37:14):
I mean, great receiver obviously, but that's gonna be a
fun one to watch play out.

Speaker 1 (37:18):
But I mean, no Tyreek Hill again.

Speaker 6 (37:19):
As a Chiefs fan, I wonder if he wishes he
I don't know, might be back in Kansas City.

Speaker 7 (37:24):
He'd be a top fiver for sure.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
But there's a good list. This is a very unique,
fun list.

Speaker 7 (37:30):
I think you did a good job, Cynthia.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
Wes be okay with the Tyreek Knott fan in here.
Would you put him in your top ten?

Speaker 7 (37:36):
I mean, I can't think of a lot that happened
last year.

Speaker 3 (37:39):
Oh I can.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (37:41):
I mean I think it's safe too. I think he's
you can use him in so many weird ways, and
he also so explosive that one play works.

Speaker 7 (37:49):
For them and that's you know, nine million fantasy points.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
So remember I told you I love Devin h Hn.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:56):
Right. I think that they go back to like that,
like the pace, the rhythm offense a little bit. I know,
you're a big I think that. And Jalen Wattell is
still there too and there going to figure some so
that's that's part of it too.

Speaker 4 (38:06):
Yeah, yeahlam. George Pickens to what West said to the credit,
he said, Pooka the Cool is also somebody I'm watching
because now that they have DeVante Adams over there, it's
going to be a Dynastics three.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (38:18):
Does does he take some attention off of Pooco a
little bit?

Speaker 1 (38:22):
Either way?

Speaker 4 (38:23):
I know that Sean mcvah and Ala Rams are happy
to have both of them, and I know a lot
of guys are gonna be happy to have pook On
the Cool on their fantasy football list.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Football is officially back, all thirty two teams reporting to
training camp this week, and NFL Network is going to
be there to cover it all. Be sure to tune
into Back Together weekend for twelve hours of live coverage
from training camps around the league. It all gets underway
nine a m. Eastern only on NFL Network. Well, Wes

(38:54):
had a chance to catch up with Tom Brady recently
had a cool exchange. By the way, that's the wrong
choice of words right now. And I know we wrote
that earlier because I'm digressing here. West is in a
studio right now with no air conditioning, So I'm sure
watch you really love that. I said you had a
puperal change with Tom Brady talking about him and being

(39:14):
drafted by the Expos before his football career ever happened.
Take a listen.

Speaker 7 (39:20):
What is one card that you think is unique that
maybe the world doesn't know about.

Speaker 4 (39:24):
My buddy Michael Ruvette Fanatics and Mike Mayhan when they
bought tops, they said, Hey, we got to make exposed cards.
I got drafted by the Expost and those are pretty dope.

Speaker 1 (39:33):
That's sick. We're on a hunt for those. Do we
have it? Do we have it in there?

Speaker 2 (39:36):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (39:36):
You have the actual cards? Wow, broadcasting doesn't work out.
There's always cardball. Yeah, hold that up.

Speaker 4 (39:43):
So little Expos baseball card height weight, bat left row right.

Speaker 1 (39:47):
I was a catcher. It was a pretty good hitting
left hand a catcher. Yeah, I did. Oh that's awesome.
Three ten career average. Eh, you know it could have
been better. Three team's great. Yeah, it was all right. Yeah,
we won the Central Coast Section title as a junior.
That was pretty good. I was better in football than.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
You think otherwise. How good you were your baseball?

Speaker 3 (40:03):
How was that?

Speaker 6 (40:05):
He was a switch hitter who batted three ten, and
he was like, I wasn't like that good.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
I was better at football.

Speaker 6 (40:10):
He's pretty amazing, also very handsome in person. But I've
gotten to do yeah, I've got to do a few
interviews in my time, and that was a pretty cool one.
We talked a little baseball. He's opening up a card
shop in the Hamptons, and.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
Just like he's just a great guy.

Speaker 6 (40:26):
He also has a great team, which I think we
would all think, oh it's Tom Brady.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
They're probably super bossy.

Speaker 6 (40:32):
They come in and kick everyone around, and they were
the nicest, coolest people ever. And so that was a
pleasant surprise to, you know, work with arguably the best
football player to ever.

Speaker 10 (40:43):
Live, and everyone was super chill, soborate, can you clabrate
what three ten is For those of us who don't
know what that, what that means is that that sounds
like it's super good.

Speaker 6 (40:55):
Baseball batting averages are just they usually only track like
the first three digits, and three ten means you know,
so you hit one hundred or would be a thousand
at bats, three hundred and ten of them, you're hitting
a hit. So that's not counting walks or being hit
by a pitch or whatever. It's when you put the
ball in play. So but like, yeah, baseball's hard to hit,

(41:16):
Like three ten's pretty solid.

Speaker 7 (41:18):
Well, the non baseball people out there.

Speaker 2 (41:19):
Wes, when you agreed to join us from New York,
they didn't tell you that Kyle likes the studio like
a sauna out there. It's he's very healthy, health oriented individual.

Speaker 7 (41:27):
He's getting he's getting a text from me, Well, we're.

Speaker 2 (41:34):
Going to send an ivy your way, We're going to
send hydration your way, or if you want to just
high tail it out here to Los Angeles. We got
air conditioning in here.

Speaker 5 (41:42):
West.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
We wanted you to come out here. We actually thought
you were going to be here. We're really excited about it.
Turned the heat up because we did it. We did it.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
We're sorry, West.

Speaker 1 (41:53):
It's okay, Wes next time, but okay, at.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
Least the show's over. Oh no, just kidding. We got
another hour and you're staying right in the hot seat
literally apparently, West. Stick around, get the man and get
them hands and whites.

Speaker 6 (42:08):

I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
