Kyle Brant, hanging out in New York.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Kyle, you ready to roll today. I'm always ready to roll.
You am thrilled that you're here.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
David, you are a world renowned restaurant tour chef.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
We want to get a Michelin star for Good Morning Football.
Can you help us do that?
Speaker 4 (00:36):
We got to see how you guys do today.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Oh that's not a yes, but it's not a no.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Let's start Good Morning Football.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
It's gonna be a wild one.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Here we go, good mo alright, just kicking things off here.
There is so much to get to. Yeah, it's the
off season, but it's all good. We got little Aaron
(01:09):
Rodgers and Rappaport's going to be joining us in just
a bit to give us some of the details around
the Steelers new quarterback. Not to mention we're going to
have some fun today, especially when it comes to my
cooking skills.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
With David in.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
The saddle here, I just want to let you know, David,
no one boils water better than me, so I will
start off thing hey, and that's kind of where it ends.
But it's awesome to have you here. You didn't bring
food though.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Unfortunately now you guys wake up very early today.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, top of the morning tea man, Glad
that you're here.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It should be a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Hey, Kyle, just because you are the OG on this show,
any advice for breaking in two rookies?
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, listen, just Isaiah's going to talk NonStop about the cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Just tune that out.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Tune that out is it's going to be cowboys here
and cowboys there. So just do you be yourself. So
sorry we offended our guests today. We have like the
worst the craft services. It's dry cereal and granola bars.
I hope you found something palatable to put in there.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
By the way, I was thinking about that, I was
devouring my eggs this morning. I was like, David must
have some real issues going to any restaurant. But nonetheless
he has caffeinated ready to rock and roll. But there
is some news around the league that we need to
go and get the full details on. No one better
to discuss this than one of our insiders in Rapaport
is with us.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
He and always get to have you, Bud.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
All right, finally a done deal in the Steel City.
Give me the details on Aaron Rodgers, who all of
a sudden is Mike Tomlins new QB one.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Oh he sure is.
Speaker 6 (02:30):
Finally, for the first time in months, we can stop
wondering who is going to be the Steelers quarterback? Over
this weekend we got an answer. It is firm, final
and official. Aaron Rodgers passed his physical in Pittsburgh has
in fact signed his contract. That is the picture of
him right there signing his contract. So no more questions
(02:52):
about will he or won he? He now has Aaron
Rodgers the starting quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers. We also
got some details on his contract. That is a one year,
thirteen point sixty five million deal ten million dollars guaranteed,
which is an important number. That's what Rogers said publicly
he'd be willing to pay for so at the minimum
he is going to walk away.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
With ten million dollars. Really not a bad deal.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
For the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 6 (03:16):
Really, anyone bringing on a veteran quarterback this time of
year or any time of year, Rogers can earn up
to nineteen point five million dollars at its max. That
includes six point five million dollars in playtime incentives. So
that's the deal. It is an accomplished quarterback. It is
a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback who's healthier than he's
(03:36):
been in the last two years, at a very very
low price. Kind of trying to follow in the footsteps
of Tom.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Brady and Peyton Manny and John.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
Lway, guys who took low salaries late in their career
to try to go finally.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Win the big one.
Speaker 6 (03:51):
We will see if Rogers and the Steelers follow suit.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, and you look at the last couple of season,
the last two seasons ten million for Aaron Rodgers. We
know Russell Wilson was on a very friendly deal. Justin fields.
They seem to be able to fill in that quarterback spot.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Some good value in terms of price.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
More details and some more news from you Ian coming
up in just a bit. But I do start thinking
to myself it was a lady's only addition of Good
Morning Football last week, Kyle got some much deserve time down.
But Kyle, you know when an Aaron Rodgers news sort
of hits, you start to think to yourself, like, what's
Kyle Brandt doing? Like you probably were so jacked up
for today first bite of the apple Man. What do
(04:27):
you make of the move that we candidly like speculated
was going to happen for a while?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Well, thank you for the question, and I did enjoy
the shows last week very much.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
At the end of the week I was watching at.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Home, the Rogers news landed oddly for a couple different reasons. One,
if you were paying attention online, the Rogers news broke
as maybe the two most powerful people in the world
were having a slap fight online, and the Rogers thing
was this aside to it. But second, also I wasn't surprised.
I don't think anyone was surprised. No one was wondering.
We all knew this was going to happen eventually. He
was never going to be viable to go with any
(04:56):
of their options, So it wasn't this bomb show. It
was more of a finally than a surprise. And I
remember when I heard the news when it was officially happening,
and I just said, Okay, the Steelers are now on
the clock for one day in January of twenty twenty six,
when we'll see if this is worth it. And my
point is they're going to make the playoffs with Rogers.
I think they would have made the playoffs without Rogers.
(05:18):
They always make the playoffs. The question will be will
they win a playoff game with Rogers?
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Not even a super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
This is a huge success if Rogers and the Steelers
win a wild card game, because it's wildly different than
what we're looking at right here.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Which is Rogers on the Jets. Totally different.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Remember, Steelers fans basically have a trust fund. If you
grew up a Steelers fan, you were a rich Nepo
baby of a sports fan, you've had a great Jets
fans are standing around a barrel fire with fingerless gloves
trying to stay warm.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
It's a totally different thing.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
So the Steelers fans expect they're not impressed with Rogers
like the Jets fans were.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
They won't be impressed.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
If you merely get to the playoffs like the Jets
fans would have been. I'll put it this way, nine
to eight without a wild card win for the Steelers
is just the same as five and twelve for the Jets.
It's nothing. Nothing. You have to win in the playoffs
or it's totally forgotten. Mason Rudolph could have gotten the
Steelers to the playoffs. So Aaron Rodgers is this first
ballot Hall of Fame messiah.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
That's only half true.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
This will be all about one day in January of
twenty twenty six and whether Rodgers finally delivers a playoff
when if he doesn't, then it's completely pointless than anybody
could have done this for Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
You're absolutely correct.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
That's the thing.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
That's the reason why they brought him here. They brought
him to Pittsburgh to win in the playoffs. Mike Thomains
never had an issue going to the playoffs. We know
that has been highly spoken about. But you brought up
Mason Rudolph. Let's talk about Mason Rudolph and some of
the other guys that Mike Tomlin has had at the
quarterback position. He's had Mitch Trubisky, he's had Mason Rudolph,
he had Justin Fields, and Russell Wilson he had and
(06:53):
now he Kenny Pickett. He had Kenny Pickett in there.
None of those guys are even remotely air Rodgers. Maybe
we could talk about, you know, Russell Wilson back in
the day, but Russell Wilson of today and what he
had last year is not of the statue of Aaron Rodgers.
This guy can still play. And I know wheer we.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Talk about Aaron Rodgers, we talked about the old.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
Times when he was that guy, he was winning, so
he won a Super Bowl, all those things. This guy
can still sling it. Don't forget the fact that this
dude still went out there and went twenty eight and
eleven last year, twenty eight touchdowns, eleven turnovers.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
But let's not talk.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
About Let's not forget about the fact that this dude
came off of an achilles tear and he still found
a way, at the age of forty years old to
come out there and take care of business.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Let's talk about the fact that.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
This dude went out there and put up more touchdowns
than majority of the rest of the NFL quarterbacks in
this league. I think he was the sixth best quarterback
overall in terms statistics, in terms of touchdowns. So this
is somebody who's coming in not only who is legendary,
not only somebody who is an absolute beast at the position,
but somebody who can still.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Slang the rock.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
And now you put him on a team that has
a solid offensive line. Now you put him him on
a team that has a solid defense, a team that
always had an established running game.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
And now he has a DK Metcalf.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Now he has a Calvin Austin or Robert Woods. He
has a trifecta of receivers out there that he could
distribute the ball out to. Because last year everybody talks
about just his second half of the season, Well it
wasn't just about when DeVante Adams got there. Prior to that,
he was throwing the ball to Garrett Wilson, who was
trying to get his legs underneath them like Bambi. And
then DeVante Adams comes on and they start getting in sync.
(08:17):
He has a trifective receivers, he has a solid old line,
has a solid defense. This is what Pittsburgh needs to
get the job done. We all knew it was going
to be happening, but now it's official.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Well, I just don't know if the Steelers going to
change the entire offense for Rodgers right. He wants to
have complete control, So I just don't know. It's hard
for me to root for the Steelers down oh, I
can't root for Rodgers, so it's hard for me. And
we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I think, David, he make a really good point though
about changing this offense. And Kyle, I don't know if
you were charting every single game throughout the course of
the season.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
We just ran a graphic.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
The more I watched the Jets with Aaron Rodgers, the
more I see him in a shotgun with Arthur Smith.
There's a heavy run game. It's a lot of under center, Like,
is this even a good fit? I know it's rose
colored glasses from listening to my guy Isaia, which is
a little surprising here.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
But Kyle, you buying this fit.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
We could just.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Copy and paste this conversation when he joined the Jets
and we were all hyping their wide receivers and they're
running back and we were so thrilled about the weapons.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
I like the fits. Sherry's Rogers. He's going to find
a way to fit.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I think it's interesting that I always like when people
outside the football world come and talk about Rogers, especially
so David you were mentioned it's hard for you to
root for him.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
You can't root for him. Do tell tell us why
we listen?
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I mean, I lived in New York for twenty five years,
and if I was going to root for a suffering team,
it would be the New York Jets. So I saw
what happened. Many of my friends are close Jets fans,
and I just listen. Here's the thing. I think this
year everything is going against him, Tomlin, everything's on the line.
I think they're sort of playing with house money. They
have nothing to lose. So as much as I'm rooting
against them, I think it might be their year two.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
Okay, so what were some of the things that you
guys liked as Jets fans that you guys liked about
Aaron Rodgers and and where did he fall short in
EU opinion as a Jets fan.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Well, first of all, there's nothing good about being a
Jets fan. Okay, there you go. You know it was
a lot of promise, There was a lot of hope
and none of it was delivered.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
Yeah, you think a lot of that feel on Aaron
Rodgers shoulders. Do you think just collectively with the Hey
coaching situation and the team as it kind of collapsed.
Where do you think that that Blaine whatever, that that
Blaine kind of lies in regards to that, because Aaron
Rodgers is still a run He towards achilles obviously in
Game one, came back the next year, it was still
able to put up, you know, really relatively good numbers
for him.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Well, at some point you have to burden some of
the responsibility and that was just not the narrative that
I was coming out of the Jets headquarters.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Well, and look, you also got to be healthy there,
and that's something that Jets fans know. They didn't get
to see Aaron Rodgers except for most of last season,
completely healthy. But you're coming off of an achilles injury.
There's going to be some issues there. Meanwhile, we bring
back our insider, I Rappaport. I know you have some pressing.
It may be not news, but some significant questions.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
No, we have some significant news for the Green Bay Packers.
Sources say they have informed Pro Bowl cornerback Jair Alexander
of his release that is expected to take place today.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
So after an off season.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
Of wondering and discussions and some trade talks, the Packers
are in fact moving on from Jaiere Alexander. Remember this
has been one that has been up and down, back
and forth for the last several months, actually the last
several years. Alexandre, a Pro Bowl one of the more
talented quarterbacks in the NFL, has battled some injury issues
over the last couple of years. Last year particularly frustrating one.
(11:29):
This obvious season, the two sides agreed to explore potential trade.
That trade did not happen before the draft, and so
at that point they discussed the potential pay cut of
restructured contracts, could not agree to terms on that either.
In the end, the Green Bay Packers op for a
clean break. They are moving on and now one of
the more talented corners in the NFL expected to be
(11:52):
available today.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Kyle, what are you making the news? Well, it's just
the big deal. I love that Ian brought this to us.
Remember this is a born and bred Packer.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
This is a first round pick who's played his entire
career there, who's been All Pro twice. No trade, He's
just sitting there like Alexander couldn't be had. Is apparently healthier, healthy,
and now completely motivated. This is to say that I'm
surprised that a player this good would just be released,
no trade value at all.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Nothing that fascinated behind us, Ian, can you get back?
You can we bring in back in? Is there? Ian?
Speaker 1 (12:27):
I'm fascinated that it's just a straight release and now
he's just sitting there. Can you give us a little
bit of background of why it had to come to that.
I know they couldn't reach the number, but no trade either.
Speaker 6 (12:35):
Yeah, they the Packers obviously wanted a trade, right, I mean, look,
bringing back was always a possibility.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
They did offer a reduced deal.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
But the number fifteen point three million, I believe is
the number for Jaiira Alexander again, really talented, excellent player
when he's on the field, has been off the field,
probably too much to the Packers liking the last couple
of years. They wanted a trade, but the problem is
that salary they just couldn't get. Couldn't come to terms
with anyone on a draft pick compensation.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
You know.
Speaker 6 (13:05):
Brendant Dudecauz to Geral manager was pretty upfront and saying
he was willing to move on as long as he
could get.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Something in the end.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Could not.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
Business is business, it is what it is. A clean
break for JayR Alexander for the Packers. And you know
he gets what he wants too. If it wasn't going
to make the same salary with the Packers, wanted a
new team, new salary, new guaranteed money.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
He is getting exactly that right now.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
So a little bit of a void in that secondary
from me Green Bay perspective. And I know you'll have
a little bit more news for us later here on
Good Morning Football, but there's still plenty more to come.
And yeah, we'll dip back into the bucket of Aaron
Rodgers and the fit in the Steel City what do
we make of it? In fact, we're going to bring
in our guy, former Steeler and our friend of the show,
Willie Cologn.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Kyle's going to be stopping by with us.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Will He always has Steelers takes, he has everything takes.
We could talk Jayre with him too. I mean, are
the Bears going to sign Jerre Alexander today, the Lions
or the Biking Somebody just go get him?
Speaker 4 (13:57):
Why not?
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Plus, this is the most important thing, not Rogers, not Alexander.
It's sandwiches, That's right. Which NFL city has the best sandwiches?
You just heard me ask that question. We have our
expert here. David's gonna tell us, he says, every time
he talks about this topic, people want to draw swords.
Is that the best sandwich in NFL city or is
it maybe somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
We'll get into it. We always do fun football and food.
It's GMFB on a Monday.
Speaker 7 (14:21):
Let's go good Monell, welcome back to Good Morning Football.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
He saw the news, you know the news. Aaron Rodgers
is a Pittsburgh Steeler. It's surreal, but it is happening.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
And for that, we go to a perspective of a
former Steeler and a current friend of the show.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
It's Willy Colong. Willie, what's up, man? You got us?
Speaker 8 (14:46):
I'm good.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
It's great to see you. As always.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
You've been in this very room with me in this chair,
and we talked a few weeks ago. Rogers, Steelers, Steelers,
Rogers was all just kind of guessing and thinking it's real.
Now he signs, he's going to be in the jersey
number eight as a former Steeler. How do you feel
about him?
Speaker 8 (15:04):
I'm glad it's over one.
Speaker 9 (15:06):
I didn't want this thing to carry on into training
camp because I felt it was going to be a distraction.
But if you're a still a fan, you have two choices. Hey,
you could be rigid and frustrated that you have a
forty one year old quarterback who comes with baggage and
seems to kind of, you know, deal with some injuries
that you know you're not getting the full.
Speaker 8 (15:22):
Anon Rodgers of what you expected when he was in
the Green Bay uniform.
Speaker 9 (15:25):
However, if you're going to be aggressively optimistic, like I'm
going to be, you're getting a forty one year old
quarterback who has a chip on the show. A guy
last year from an individual standpoint, had comparable stats to
Josh Allen. Both through for over three thousand, three thousand yards,
both had twenty eight touchdowns.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Yes, Aaron Rodgers had eleven interceptions.
Speaker 9 (15:45):
Josh Allen had six interceptions and had an MVP type
season season. Nevertheless, man, if I'm the Steelers right now,
I'm treating Aaron Rodgers like a hired mercenary, like an
assassin like John Wick.
Speaker 8 (15:58):
I don't need you to reset the culture.
Speaker 9 (16:00):
I need you to come in, win football games and
a lay your opponent down and go home.
Speaker 8 (16:04):
That's what I'm expecting out of me. So hopefully he
can make that happen.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Well, Willie, look, you had a front row seat for
Rogers last season, and by the way, I got a
ton of friends and family that are in that New
York area. I don't know if it's cash or credit
card that you accept for your co pays, because on
the postgame shows, you and Bart Scott obviously got to
decompress a lot of losses for this team. But there
was an evolution in Rodgers's play last year. What did
you see as you watched every single snap that sort
(16:29):
of showcased like a morphed ability for him to be
kind of that old school Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 9 (16:34):
Well, if I was to put in simple terms, and
I'm going to break it down in this regard, it.
Speaker 8 (16:39):
Goes to good, the bad, and the ugly.
Speaker 9 (16:40):
The good is when he got the training camp, he
looked hungry and ready.
Speaker 8 (16:44):
He seemed to be in sync with Gatt Wilson.
Speaker 9 (16:47):
They had weapons on the offense, Tyler Conklin, Breise Hall,
Mike Williams, the office line seeing veteran ready, meaning they
had Tyron Smith and Morgan mos Capp in that office
a line, and there was for a second, there was
a theme in training camp.
Speaker 8 (17:04):
That really that I think people brought.
Speaker 9 (17:06):
Into that the Jets were all in and Anon Rodgers
was ready to go even though he had that catastrophic injury.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
Now the bad is they weren't ready. I felt Aaron.
Speaker 9 (17:15):
Should have played in the first should have played in
the preseason. They were ready for Week one against the
forty nine ers, and they seemed that a seen and
clunky at times, and the offensive line aged bad. You
couldn't find Breece Holl on tape, and so different things
starting to look kind of like, ah, man, maybe we
kind of overhyped the Jets and then it kind of
spiraled and went downhill.
Speaker 8 (17:35):
I think the ugly overall is and Kyle, maybe you
guys have backed me up on this. One day.
Speaker 9 (17:40):
There's going to be a documentary on the conversation Aaron
Rodgers and Woody Johnson had the night before firing Robert Salad.
Speaker 8 (17:47):
That was the dark cloud.
Speaker 9 (17:49):
And then what led to that was the Vonta Adams.
Him and Aaron didn't have the connection we thought they
were going to have. Garrett Wilson and Anon Rodgers seemed
clunky and not a center. This offensive line aged and
got hurt, like I said earlier, and then Jeff Oulbrich
was handed the keys to a team that was really struggling,
and the car blew up because of defense. The defense
(18:11):
was supposed to be that kind of anchor from this team,
and they couldn't stop the run. Teams were averaging over
one hundred and twenty plus yards on the ground on
them and they were struggling to get to the quarterback.
And so as the season went along, Man after Week eight,
this team looked out of whole. They lack of faith
and fight and it was all over. And so that
was kind of the evolution of the season. And like
(18:33):
I said, from an individual standpoint, Aarons looked like a
top ten quarterback, but as a team, they just they
underperformed Big tim.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
My guy Wi Lee. Good to see the big doug Hey.
We just talked about it a little bit earlier.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
About what Mike Tomlin has had at the quarterback position
over the years, right, the Kenny Picketts, the Russell Wilson,
Justin Fields, Mason Rudolph, mister Bisky. He hasn't had a
lot at that position at least that's been constant and consistent.
Now you talk about this particular division. Right, you got
Joe Burrow right, the ice in his veins, we got
Lamar Jackson. You know, you start talkingbout overall on the conference. Okay,
(19:06):
you got the man, you know, Josh Allen himself. When
you talk about Aaron Rodgers coming into that building, now
you've been in there, does that close the gap in
regards of the AFC picture at the quarterback position? And
how much does that help Mike Tomlin as a head coach.
Speaker 9 (19:21):
Well, no, it doesn't close the gap, but it narrows it.
And you got to understand for the second short year,
the Steelers have a brutal back into the season. And
I think what's expected considering that Stellers have eight straight
games and six out of those eight games, those teams
are expected to be I think ten plus one, ten
plus win teams. They need a quarterback to compete and
(19:44):
fight against those other elite quarterbacks. They didn't have that
last year, especially with Russell Wilson. So they're expecting Aaron Rodgers,
even at his right age of forty one, to go
on the field and do the damn thing because of
his expertise and what his resume looks like. Now, can
he get that done. And I think that's what Mike
tom is counting on because I think last year, as
much as we want to dis this steel the offense,
(20:06):
it was really the Steelers defense.
Speaker 8 (20:07):
That's struggled, and so they one way you can help.
Speaker 9 (20:10):
A struggling defense is having a quarterback that could put
it put up numbers in the offense that you can
kind of balance out the team.
Speaker 8 (20:16):
And I think that's what Mike Thomas was expecting.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
Willie Dave Chang here big fan listen as a as
a fan, I know nothing really about the exce's and
of the sport, but I do understand culture and building
an organization, and that word gets thrown on a lot
in sports. How important is it in the Steelers rocker room?
And do you think Tomlin will have any issues with Rogers?
Speaker 9 (20:37):
You know, I like the combination of Aaron and Mike,
and I think most people are like worry about the
personality clashes, and I'm not because they're bound by fate
and I think when you talk about them right now,
it's about time and pression.
Speaker 8 (20:50):
They're both in that category.
Speaker 9 (20:51):
Considering Aaron Rodgers forty one years old, this is his
final app Mike Tomland had tot won a playoff game
since twenty sixteen. One thing is going to be interesting
because valid we understand Mike Tomlan knows how to handle
know how to handle conflict personalities. The issue right now
is how does Arthur Smith and Aaron Rodgers get along?
(21:11):
Because we know Aaron Rodgers likes freedom at the light
of scrimmage. We know he likes his veteran receivers to
adjust on the fly. How much leeway will he get.
Speaker 8 (21:20):
I'm not worried.
Speaker 9 (21:21):
About Mike Tomon and Aaron Rodgers. I think both guys
respect each other. And if Aaron honestly didn't like Mike Tomo,
if they were anything there, he wouldn't be a Pisburs Steeler.
Right now, I'm more worried about what does Arthur Smith
and Aaron Rodgers look like and how does that kind
of manifest into hopefully a good relationship where we can
see Aaron Rodgers grow within the offense and Arthur Smith
and his office continue to thrive.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Do you think Arthur Smith is happy that he's got Rogers.
Speaker 9 (21:46):
I think right now he's happy that he has a
consistent guy. I think he has a guy he doesn't
have to question. I think there was a lot of
rumlings about his relationship in Russell Wilson. I think a
lot of people felt like even when Josh excuse me,
Justin Fields was that.
Speaker 8 (21:57):
Quarterback, he was treated with kid gloves.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
I think when you have Aaron Rodgers, you can really
open up the offense and a lot and trust that
Aaron once again could be Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 8 (22:06):
There's gonna be points.
Speaker 9 (22:07):
In this season where you're going to need him to
put them into Katy and I think you have a
guy because of his resume and what he's done, this
league has the ability to do that. I think once
Aaron Rodgers, if he's able to remain healthy and continue
to grow with the weapons around him, and they get
a good offensive line and a defensive back of them,
I think Author Smith is going to genuinely say, hey, man,
I trust who you are, and I trust what you do.
(22:28):
Last go get this thing for the better good, and
that's winning football games.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Willie.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
I think Steelers fans are fascinating right now because whereas
a couple of years ago, Jets fans have felt like
they fell to their knees and web tiers of joy
that Rogers chose them. Steelers fans are kind of like,
I don't know, show me something like to get into
their heads right now, because I think there's a huge
faction of them that actually didn't want Rogers or is
(22:53):
that best kind of epathetic about it? Where do you
think they're at mentally right now? Knowing that fan base
as well as you do.
Speaker 8 (22:59):
I mean, they just know.
Speaker 9 (22:59):
I think they're frustrated from this standpoint. They don't have
a quarterback for the future, and I think they only
have Aaron Rodgers for the year, So they're kind of like, yeah,
we got this aging and great quarterback, but we don't
have somebody we can fall in love with for years
to come. But I would tell Aaron Rodgers does flat out.
Speaker 8 (23:19):
If the Steller fans will love you, if you give
them your heart.
Speaker 9 (23:22):
Bottom line, you got to show up and show the
great infight and respect the city for all the stands
for there's rich there, rich history there.
Speaker 8 (23:30):
You see the six Super Bowl trophies.
Speaker 9 (23:31):
You know this fan base lives and dies with the
Pittsburgh Steelers and his culture. One of the things I
thought Aaron Rodgers did a really good job was last
year when he arrived in New York. When he first
arrived in New York, he went to all the basketball games.
He was all over New York City. He was a
piece of shaking hands, kissing babies. I would tell him
to do the same thing in Pittsburgh because I think
(23:52):
a lot of people are afraid that if things don't
go right with Aaron Rodgers, that there may be a
chance that he may become toxic, and that the headlines
that things make some kind of spiral out of control.
Speaker 8 (24:03):
And so if I'm in and.
Speaker 9 (24:05):
Rodgers do the same thing he did in New York,
show up, shake hands, kiss babies, have a Kermandy sandwich,
lapdown in high City, go to a Buco game, you know,
take care of the terrible towel, treated with respect. It
really immersed himself into the Pittsburgh culture, and I think
he'll be fine and then go win some football game
from the Steelers and they will love them. Like I
said once again, they will love you if you give
(24:26):
them your heart.
Speaker 8 (24:27):
Bottom line.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
By the way, it is a little bit easier to
show up to the Garden when the Knicks are playing
some good basketball, So that does help that transition for Rodgers.
That's a better ticket at this point you had mentioned, Hey,
for Steelers fans that quarterback of the future, it looked
like last year maybe they had that guy in justin Fields.
He now goes to Rogers' former team with the Jets,
they got a new head coach and Aaron Glenn.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
You know this team.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
You're doing this postgame shows, you're watching every single snap.
How much of an uphill battle is this for Aaron Glenn?
Speaker 8 (24:55):
It's tough.
Speaker 9 (24:56):
It's tough because I think keep going into the building
trying to set high expectations when you're dealing with a
locker room. Who really that with Aaron Rodgers and the
pieces they were able to bring in that they want
to reset and change the culture, and the Jets are
going to be perceived in a different life that never happened.
If anything, it got worse than the gout other and
(25:18):
so I think he really has to kind of shock
life back into this locker when the young guy's.
Speaker 8 (25:22):
Like, hey man, we can do this and we can
do this together.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
Now.
Speaker 9 (25:26):
The first phase of that is he has to get
this defense back on par.
Speaker 8 (25:30):
They struggled massively in the run game.
Speaker 9 (25:32):
They had no execution as far as getting after the
quarterback and now, I think largely because they the injury
to Jermaine Johnson, and so this secondary led by Sauce Gardner.
Speaker 8 (25:42):
Is going to be different because DJ Reid is gone
as a cop. All the pieces are gone.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
So how can he get this defense back to where
they need to be so they can compete? Now this
is supposed to be his strength. We have to see
this defense come alive and be better. I think offensively,
I think you have to respect where Justin Fields is trying.
Speaker 8 (25:59):
To make him an old world quarterback. I don't think
that's who he is.
Speaker 9 (26:02):
I think he comes with instruction, use him, use his athleticism,
allow him to thrive and run the ball. One of
the things that pissed me off last year about the
New York just is that we couldn't find Brice Hall
on tape, and it was it was aggressively ugly because
there was times where we just needed things to go
after a big touchdown, after the.
Speaker 8 (26:22):
Just gave up a big touchdown in the game.
Speaker 9 (26:24):
One way to start momentum is running the ball, and
we failed to do that.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
And I thought Brice Hall.
Speaker 9 (26:30):
As long as the season went along, it was he
was disconnected from the offense. So I think Aaron Gilly
has to get the run game going, get that defense
back on par and shot confidence into that locker room,
into this fan base. And I think that's that's a
that's a better trajectory for the New York Jets moving forward.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
All right, Well, there's no chance that we're gonna have
one of the best chefs in the world sitting at
our table. Come on, and I know that you consider
yourself probably to be a chef kind of sore, so
I'm gonna have give you the opportunity to ask missus David,
do you have any any hot takes about food?
Speaker 4 (27:03):
Do you have your best dish that you do? Go
ahead and throw a throw a question his way.
Speaker 8 (27:07):
Man, I have a lot of things made, David. You
have a whole another show about killing be a whole
nother situation.
Speaker 9 (27:13):
But I've read something recently that that's really been bottling
my mind, considering that tomatoes or fruit, it's ketchup of smoothie.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
Wow, Really, I thought i'd be an expert. I'd ask
you answer anything you were asking here. It's a ketchup
is a it's a sauce. It's not as smoothie. That's
that's ridiculous. I can't even acknowledge that, is it?
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Though, I'm kind of putting this together like I think
there might be an argument, Well.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
Smoothie doesn't have vinegar and spices in it, and that's
the difference. Yes, you can you.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Put ketchup on hot dogs. How do you feel about that?
Speaker 4 (27:48):
Well, listen, Chicago.
Speaker 9 (27:50):
I'm not a ketchup on hot hot dog guy. I'm
more of a mustard based guy. We a little sound crap,
That's that's how I rolled. But nevertheless, man, you know,
people like to get weird, Willy.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
That's why you come in here.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
People like to get weird, and that's why we like you.
That's where the claude. Everybody follow him. He's always got takes.
Hopefully be back with him soon.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
I'm back here on Good Morning Football. There is nothing
better than to get a little bit of news and
the Houston Texans getting some reinforcements in their backfield for
a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Ian Rappaport has got us covered.
Speaker 6 (28:19):
Hey, and the Houston Texans have agreed to terms with
Brown's Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Nick Chubb headed.
Speaker 6 (28:28):
To Houston today, actually probably is already there.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Gon't to take a physical. Pending this physical.
Speaker 6 (28:33):
Which I assume is going to be fine.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
He did suffer an injury Dan the last year. That
was a long time.
Speaker 6 (28:37):
Ago, pending the results of this physical. Nick Chubb, the
long time Brown's running back on the face of the
Browns franchise, a four time Pro bowler in Cleveland who
was one of the best running backs over the course
of the last decade, is expected to land in Houston.
And this one could have gone a couple different ways.
Before the draft, the Browns had discussions with Nick Chubb
about bringing back. Those discussions did not land in a deal.
(29:00):
They went to the draft, Brown's addressed to position and
the drafted door was still open, but the Browns to
dress the position. The Texans did have a running back
spot alongside Joe Mixon, and now they agreed to terms
right before a minute to a mini camp with Nick Chubb,
an incentive lating deal that should be done and finalized
later today.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
I'll tell you what you're gonna face the Texans this year.
You better be ready to tackle. Those two guys are
no picnic. They run hard, They run dudes over. That
is gonna be a really physical team. But Ian speaking
of picnics. It so happens that now you and I
are on CV Live this morning, but about twelve hours ago,
you and I were also together socializing. I witnessed you
(29:39):
break the Nick Chubb news as you were grilling out
outside and next to the water. This is a beautiful thing.
So we have David Chang here, world renowned chef, and
I have video that's rap sheet making burgers and you're
gonna see them get smashed. Ian talk us through this,
and then let's get David Chang's thoughts.
Speaker 6 (29:57):
So right, son, Max smashing the smash burgers really needed
to get a little bit dinner. But that is up
one of my new toys, the actual smashing toy, whatever
it's called. That's a yetty cast iron right there.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Did a great job there.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
What do you think of my technique? Listen, smash burgers
are great. They're a wonderful way of developing my ard reaction,
so that gives it more flavor, more mammy. But the
question I have is, I don't see any salt on
those burgers. And you put it on after no.
Speaker 6 (30:27):
No, no, no, We seasoned and salted before. We did a
little salt, pepper, garlic beforehand. And then right like as
you were about to eat them, my eleven year old
son sprinkled a little more on his because he likes
a little more flavor. So yeah, I would say it
was a family affair. The brands did an excellent job
of playing pickleball beforehand and then eating a lot of
burgers after. It was a glorious evening, and yeah, it's
(30:52):
pretty awesome.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
So I want more of thoughts from David.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
But I smashed two of the smash burgers, and guys,
there was a third just sitting there, and I'm like,
that's embarrassing.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
I can't eat three burgers as a guest.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
But I wanted to David give us, as everybody's.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Going to try to do the Ian thing where they grill.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
They're they're doing that this summer season, give us something
like a tip for grilling burgers like that, and then
give us something that people usually mess up, like what
is a big faux paw at the grill question?
Speaker 4 (31:18):
Well, the best tip again is seasoning. So I think
one of the biggest sort of fumbles for grilling in
general is people just don't put enough salt because they
don't usually grill, and they forget these little things. I
don't know if I would preseason. I think that takes
some of the moisture out of the beef. So you
want to do it at the last second. That's just
how I like to do that. And I think one
of the tips for sure is just they don't wait
(31:40):
to get the grill hot enough. You have to prepare
it properly. And it certainly looks like Roperport had a
properly temp grill. So good job, which is right, baby.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
But I just want to let you guys know, and
you didn't see this, but David's reaction while we really
going like just peering into the screen, just making sure
he's like, is Ian smashing in this at the right
the right temps of the whole thing. It's it's sort
of like how Isaiah I imagine watching football games, just
sitting back going critical of this.
Speaker 5 (32:06):
Adequate pressure on the smashing. No, actually, he can get more.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
I mean, a good smash worker should be almost like
like two sheets of paper thin.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
Okay, Rap admitted today he said have been smashed a
little bit. He said said not to but way thinner
than that. But listen, Kyle said it was delicious. At
the end of the day. That's all that matters.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
It was, That's all that meted.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
It was good family time, was our little football and
in the off season we know that Ian is bringing
it in a.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
There we go.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
We got a little more food conversation here David's ranking
his top cities as it pertains the sandwiches, good money,
(32:51):
all right.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Back here on Good Morning Football.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
You know, one of the polarizing topics when it comes
to NFL cities is not about whether your team wins
or loses.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
It's about the food in your respective cities.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
There's no one better to have at the breakfast table
with us than David Chang, Who's going to rank his
top five NFL football cities And it all comes down
to the sandwiches.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
Correct, This is true. The sandwich is the great test
for how great a city is in food. And man,
I hope my home city of New York does not
kill me because coming in at number five is New
York City.
Speaker 8 (33:23):
Yeah, whoa.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Listen, I love New York. It is always going to
be my home. But outside of a pastrami sandwich, can
you say New York really has a sandwich? Right? Listen?
It's delicious. Cast is delicatess and one of the greatest
places in the world. You might even say a bagel
on locks, but I don't think a bagel is a sandwich.
So no, I'm going to New York. Number five and
(33:47):
don't hate me and number four the Beef, great TV show,
Great sandwich. It's you can almost like dip it in
the in the zoo if you want to. It's like
the best of both worlds. Chicago number four, and I
will say hot dog is not a sandwich as well,
but Chicago's got it going on. Probably the most underrated
and most important food city in America in my opinion.
(34:10):
Three is one of my favorite places to eat in general.
New Orleans. You have mufflaanas, you have po boys, you
have one of the richest, most diverse food cities in America,
one of the oldest, and you can never go wrong
in that city. Just one of the great nining destinations
in America. Coming in a number two and it doesn't
This pains me to talk about because I'm no fan
(34:31):
of Philadelphia Philadelphia Eagles, but Philadelphia is truly a wonderland
of sandwiches really, and as much as I love the
cheese steak, I think it's the roast pork that is
the true sandwich of Philadelphia. It's got so much going on,
but Philly can't go wrong. Also, just so many great
restaurants in general. And listen, I moved to LA a
(34:52):
few years ago, and I would be surprised if you
asked me before I moved here if the number one
sandwich in America in terms of depth and diversity would
be Los Angeles because you have, wow, the Mexican influence.
You have semitas, you got tortes, you also have the pastrami,
you have canters, You've got langers, you have all kinds
(35:14):
of things. So by the sheer sort of amount of
kinds of sandwiches, I'm going to say, Los Angeles.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Is it bad that I don't know any of those
sandwiches that you just named?
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Well, we got to go to you. I a wit it.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
Ye value here, let's get it.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
I'm in shock LA having the best sandwich. Like you
told me that the best live theater is in Cleveland,
I'd be shocked by that.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
But you're the guy who knows. David.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
Unfortunately, there's a lot of people who watch the show
who are get confused about who is where so there's
people who think you're in New York right now, and
security is telling me there's torches outside and they're waiting
for you to leave, so we.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
Have to get you security now.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Listen.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
It's like you say, they only got one sandwich, it's
the pastrami. But it's like, that's like Santah the Bulls
only have one player and it's Michael Jordan. Like that
is a hell of a sandwich to only land them
I number five.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Hey, listen, Absolutely true, but there's so many good sandwiches
you're in LA and listen, I love New York citizing,
but New York really just has the Postroma. Can you
name another sandwich that?
Speaker 2 (36:10):
But that's the point, though, David. Here, here's the reality
you don't need to have if you're in New York.
You can get any sandwich you want in that city.
That's like the one I miss about home. So it's
not just about like this identified one. By the way,
I don't usually take notes when people are speaking during
the show, I was taking notes, so you had some
hot takes here. The fact that you said the cheese
steak in Philadelphia is not like the Marquee sandwich is
(36:31):
shocking to me, like that is like worldwide with Philadelphia
is known for I.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
Know it just dawn on me. I forgot about the
butdega bacon, egg and cheese and New York there is
two sandwarches my bathroom.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Oh oh, and by the way, you did throw this out
here breakfast sandwiches and bagels. Yeah, that is a sandwich
number one and number two. The best bagels are not
in New York. As a guy that grew up in
New Jersey, the best bagels are in New Jersey.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
So I think that's an important.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
That's crazy talk crazy.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
No, these are facts, David.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
I'm by the way, look at me telling I got
the world a chef about food takes.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
But I know I love this. Bagels are better than
New York bagels, and it's not David. I.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
We usually tend to go positive on this show, like like, yeah,
I'm trying to do about Jersey. Let's just flip that though.
What is the city? It's just between us. What's a
city where if you're like, oh man, I gotta travel there,
there's nothing to eat there.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
I can't ever fit. Is there one of those like
if you had to do your worst, what would it
be man.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
I travel a lot, so I don't want to say
anything negatively about anything. Just listen. Then let me just say,
any city in New Jersey near the meadowlands is probably
not the best place to eat. You talk about the place.
And he told me he's a Giants fan, So listen, Sorry,
Giants fans, I just have to say it.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Well, there's look where David's coming from. Number one, he's
a Commanders fan. So by the way, as a guy
who called New York City home, and he is ragging
on the g man, ragging on on the Jets. He
probably didn't like the Knicks run this year. He's a
Commander's fan. I mean, this is this is where this
heat and this negativity is coming.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
I thought we hit it off in the green room
this morning, David. What happened here? This thing? They're pitting
us against each other and I don't like this.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
I need to know why is a bagel not a sandwich?
Speaker 4 (38:08):
Because I think it's a breakfast food. You know, I
don't know, but because I just don't think cream cheese
is a sandwich sort of saw you know, it's spreadable.
I love cream cheese. I just don't This is me.
I mean, you're an experts.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
He is the expert. But it's like here, you know,
who's the best team in the NFL? Like you know,
everyone can have an opinion, and.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Maybe the one that I give is maybe the one
that I feel the best about. I'm back here on
Good Morning Football. Look, we have the world famous chef
David Chang, that's here. But you are a football head
in a lot of ways. You're watching all the games
on Thursday, you're watching them obviously on Mondays, and then
of course everything that's happening on Sundays. But you were
part of the TNF crew as well. Just broadly speaking,
(38:50):
that experience must have been so much fun, hit the road,
meeting the different players in those games.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
What was it like for you?
Speaker 4 (38:55):
I still don't believe that it's happened, because it's one
of the coolest things I've ever been part of. In
the whole Amazon TNF team, they're just the best, and
it's really like a family, and getting to travel and
watch the games with experts like yourselves, it just sort
of changes the whole football experience now.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
Deed, no I heard along the great minded.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
There may or may not be a story where Richard
Sherman set you up for a failure.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
We need a backstory to just tell us what okay.
So one of the big things that I do for
T and F is make the sort of leftover feast
for a Friday night football game. And so we make
a leftover sandwich. We call it the wedge Breaker. And
this year we were in Kansas City and we make
this thing, and you don't know exactly who's gonna win
because it's like basically of the game and it's got
(39:38):
turkey and pork and all kinds of stuff in it.
But the only reason I put pork in is Richard
Simmons like, hey, tasty, He's like, you know what it's
missing bacon? I was like, and that's all happening live,
and maybe like ten minutes beforehand, we have to make
the sandwich and go out. So I don't know, and
we still don't know. They haven't made the determination if
it's Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelcey, or Chris Jones defensive tackle.
(39:59):
So I'm walking out there and it's Chris Jones. Nobody's
told me anything. I made the last the decision to
add pork put there, and he looks at it and
it's on camera and he's like, I don't need pork.
Speaker 5 (40:09):
Oh, so you made this amazing spread as as an
award for the MVP of the night. And he looks
at you says, yeah, this looks good. I hope it
doesn't have no pork on it because I don't eat pork.
Speaker 4 (40:21):
That's correct. So listen, that's what live TV is, you guys.
You guys know. And I was incredibly embarrassed, but there's
nothing I could have done about it. So when I
blamed Richard Sherman, it's his fault. It's definitely shar ful.
Absolutely that next teammate. But who ended up eating a sandwich? Gosh,
everyone else did after the fact.
Speaker 5 (40:37):
Okay, I was gonna say Fitzmagic probably did it.
Speaker 4 (40:39):
Fitz going over to CHRISA, she'll put it down, CHRISA,
she's a great They're all good eaters. They're all good eaters.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
What did you call the sandwich, by the way, the
wedge breaker, the wedge breaker, Kyle. I think if if
you ever need help by the way naming and say, Kyle,
I feel like you'd be really good at that.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
It'd be my pleasure.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
I like the wedge breaker because there used to be
a thing in football called the way, but it used
to be a thing called kick returns and it was
really fun. So it's old school and I love the
call back to that, right asah.
Speaker 5 (41:06):
Absolutely listen up for those that don't know what the
