Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Good mom, My Mom.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Welcome to GMF.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
I'm Sarah Walsh, joined by Kyle Brandt there in New York,
and unfortunately we start with some sad news from the
NFL world this morning, as Colts owner Jim Ursa passed
away yesterday.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
Kyle, he did, Sarah and the Colts announced it, of
course officially, and he passed away in his sleep at
the age of sixty five, and for those of us
who have watched them for decades, was incredibly sad news.
I only knew Jim Mersay from Afar, but I've always
felt that Jim Mersay.
Speaker 6 (00:53):
Was unique among owners.
Speaker 5 (00:55):
He became the youngest owner at thirty seven years old,
and he had this image of the hippie, flower child,
rock star owner. I think Jim Irsay was the closest
thing we had to Tony Stark in the NFL. I
also think that many owners, who may even be successful
in football, or maybe even be beloved in their communities,
(01:15):
are not relatable to fans, because how could they be
their lives are so different. But I think in a way,
Jim Rsay was and I think it was because of
his flaws, because of his demons. Jim Irsay was not
just a suit in a suite. He'd been through some stuff,
and again that's relatable, and I think despite all he endured,
(01:36):
I think parts of Jim Irsay were really really cool.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
Now. Sure, he drafted Peyton Manning.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
He also owned Kurt Cobain's guitar from smells like teen Spirit.
He also owned Secretariat Saddle And I think for some
of us we daydream that if we were billionaires, what
would we do with our lives? Well, how about own
an NFL team that we passed down to our children
(02:05):
by cool expensive stuff. Maybe get in some trouble here
and there, and just watch and love football all the time.
Jim Irsay was an original, imperfect, super Bowl winning owner
and I will miss him very much in our league, Srea.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
He was also the definition of Colts football. Kylie took
over the team from his father at thirty seven years old.
At that time, that made him the youngest owner in
the NFL. That was after previously serving as their general manager,
drafted a franchise changing quarterback and Peyton Manning, and through
his leadership, Ursay helped Indianapolis bring home its only Lombardi Trophy,
(02:45):
and he did so. Kyle was just speaking about this
while continually striving to overcome personal adversity.
Speaker 7 (02:55):
The Indianapolis Colts football revival occurred under the guidance of
Jim Ursay, a man who overcame obstacles of his own.
Speaker 8 (03:04):
I had a tough childhood. I mean, you know, I
lost both my brother and sister. You know, my sister
died in the car crash when I was eleven. A
state trooper came knocking on the door. And you know,
your sister's dad, you know, and your brother is severely
handicapped at birth and eventually dies at an early age.
(03:26):
And so you know, out a three year the only
one left. My dad died of alcoholism. My grandfather died
of alcoholism.
Speaker 7 (03:34):
Ers would struggle against similar substance dependencies throughout much of
his life, often at a heavy price. But in the
early days of Colt's football in the Hoosier State, Jim
was very much in control of his father's team as
it's youthfull general manager. At the age of twenty seven,
he put together a ten player blockbuster deal that brought
(03:57):
in star running back Eric Dickerson, a move that ended
a decade of futility Dickerson.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
Trying to get outside up to the thirty eighth at
the twenty five twenty.
Speaker 7 (04:09):
They did at thirty four yards per.
Speaker 6 (04:12):
The Colts went in twenty four to six that head
to the playoff for the first time in ten years.
From last Rice to Park.
Speaker 7 (04:20):
A decade later, Ersay made the draft choice that turned
the Colts into an NFL powerhouse.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
With the first pick in the draft, the Indianapolis Colts
select quarterback University of Tennessee Peyton Manna.
Speaker 7 (04:38):
From this began a golden era of Colts football. Under
ersa twenty two game winning streak that's a record, and
fourteen in this decade.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
That's a record.
Speaker 8 (04:52):
Looking at all other teams in the last century in
all sports, this is really special.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Nine straight seasons when ten or more wins, nine straight
playoff appearances ties a record.
Speaker 7 (05:06):
In two thousand and eight, hers opened a showplace stadium
for his thoroughbred team, after having already built his reputation
among league owners with a steady stream of progressive head
coaching hires.
Speaker 9 (05:26):
I want to go get this, and.
Speaker 7 (05:29):
Anyone who doesn't want more than one of these you know,
shouldn't wear a horse shoe.
Speaker 8 (05:34):
I walk in the locker room on Sunday and you know,
we gather hands and pray and then get ready to
go on the field. WHOA very well, every single player
has to know that I did everything I can to
give us a chance to win.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
Wait to fipe, maybe wait a pipe.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
For more on the passing of Jim Orsay, we want
to bring in our Brian Baldinger, who spent time there
in Indianapolis. You knew Embaldi, you played for the What
were your initial thoughts when you heard this news yesterday?
Speaker 9 (06:08):
Well, I was on the.
Speaker 10 (06:09):
Area yesterday doing the insiders when the news broke, So
it was a real gut punch, Sarah. I had no
idea that he was in you know that type of
condition at at this moment. But you know, all of
a sudden, you know when that happens, and it's so instantaneous,
you just get flooded with emotions. And I came to
(06:30):
the Colts, Sarah, in nineteen eighty eight. His father, Robert
or Say was owning the team, but basically Jim ran
the team. He was the one that brought Ron Meyer
in from SMU, who we played for in college. He
was the one that made the trade for Eric Dickerson,
which really helped to transform the Indianapolis Colts and really
even before Peyton Manning was drafted, begin the transformation of
(06:52):
a town that was largely at this time of the
year it was a race cart Down was a college
basketball town. And that, you know, that trade for Eric
Dickerson put the Indianapolis Colts on the map and suddenly
we started paid attention to football in Indiana for the
first time.
Speaker 9 (07:09):
Paul.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
They were seeing these videos of him in the locker
room of players and I'm going to quote his own
words from the piece we just ran. Every player had
to know that I did everything I could to help
them win. What were the players' impressions of mister Ersa
on the Colts?
Speaker 10 (07:25):
You know, Kyle, my first impression of Jim honestly, we're
about the same age I came to the Colts. I
was about twenty eight years old, was Jim and the
lifting in the weight room with the players and he
played college football.
Speaker 9 (07:37):
Yeah, into the health thing.
Speaker 10 (07:39):
I remember him lifting like all of us, you know,
taking the smelly salts and putting.
Speaker 9 (07:44):
The weight the weight shirts on and you know, squatting.
Speaker 10 (07:48):
There is Joe Cleco and Jim Irsay squatting, Barry Krause
my crew, Kevin call Ray Donaldson. You know there he
is the owner of the basically the facto owner of
the time, even though his dad would have the title.
Speaker 9 (08:02):
I mean, he was in there with all players at
that point.
Speaker 10 (08:05):
He wasn't trying to be you know, chummy chummy with us,
but he was, you know, he was out there living
the life of you know, us lineman, just trying to
get bigger and stronger.
Speaker 9 (08:16):
That was my first impression of Jim and.
Speaker 10 (08:17):
And just really how easy it was to communicate with him,
to talk to him about you know, any number of
different subjects.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
You know, you shared that and that was your first impression, Baldi.
But when you look at all these videos of him
having a good time, do you have is there a
favorite memory of him of your time there in Indianapolis?
Speaker 10 (08:38):
Well, you know, I mean, he look, we share the
same love of music, you know, whether it was Bob
Dylan or Jimmy you know, Jimmy Hendrix or you know,
Jerry Garcia.
Speaker 9 (08:47):
My brother traveled with the Grateful Dead.
Speaker 10 (08:50):
So you know, you want to talk about Jerry Garcia's
guitar or his jam band. You could get music in
that conversation with Jim at any moment about any artist
during that era, because I grew up kind of worshiping
the same type of music. And so that's my earliest
recollections of any conversations I had which outside of football
(09:12):
was his love of music, his guitar collection, which basically
you know, when you look at the revitalization of downtown Indianapolis,
whether it's Lucas Oil Stadium, a brand new airport, the
super Bowl, there's the Indiana State Museum right there where
most of his collection of the things that he added
(09:32):
are on display right now for anybody to see.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
It's so fun as a fan of the game ball
to see this type of stuff.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
But I wonder as a player.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
I mentioned this in my opening comments, there are many
owners who are not only removed and reserved and very
buttoned down and conservative. If you remember the Indianapolis Colts
and the guy signing your checks is up on stage,
rocking and rolling, and he is truly a rock star
in and of himself.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
What is that like as a player.
Speaker 10 (09:59):
It's cool. I think it's cool. I mean, you mentioned
at the very outsetick. He's very relatable guy with his flaws.
We were well aware of him and some of the
issues that he had.
Speaker 9 (10:11):
We knew that. We knew that about his father as well.
Speaker 10 (10:14):
But I think at the same time, all he wanted
to do, honestly, Kyle, is to make the Indianapolis Colts
a world class organization.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
And you knew as a player, and this is any
team in the league.
Speaker 10 (10:25):
You just want to know that your owner cares as
much about the game and the team as you want
him to, and he's going to provide anything that you
need to be the best that you very can be.
Speaker 9 (10:36):
I was in South Florida. I was in Miami that night.
Speaker 10 (10:39):
Super Bowl forty one, Kyle with Prince on stage the
downpour when the coach won that championship. And I know
that I didn't see Jim that night, but I know
that night this is what is the culmination of his dream.
Because you know when they packed up from Baltimore and
came to Indy in nineteen eighty.
Speaker 9 (10:58):
Four, cloaked in secrecy. I mean, nobody knew that they.
Speaker 10 (11:02):
Could be transformed into a world class organation. And it
was all because of that man and his vision. Right there, Kyle,
that allowed that to happen and for that to live
on in a sound like Indianapolis.
Speaker 9 (11:13):
Where you know, you compete for Super Bowls.
Speaker 10 (11:16):
Now with the likes of Peyton Manning Andrew Luckin, you
know what they have going on right now there.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
I got to think, Baldi that if he's in the
Super Bowl and he's watching Peyton Manning win and Prince
is rocking out at halftime, that must have been his
absolute apex this heaven.
Speaker 10 (11:34):
I got to think, right Kyle, that you know, while
Princess sing in Purple Rain, that there's some good fist
bumps in the air of that day.
Speaker 9 (11:43):
There's some real good rocking going on.
Speaker 10 (11:46):
As it's still one of the greatest halftime performances that
any of us have ever seen during Super Bowls.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
You know, Kyle used the word relatable and baldy, you
know this just that he would talk to anyone and everyone,
and it was not that conservative button done didn't have
time for you. And I can tell you in twenty
twenty three they went to Germany and Stacy Dale's and
I covered that game and it was the Patriots and
the Colts, and the Colts won and we're on the
parking garage afterwards, and everyone was trying to get out
of there and there's a car waiting for him, and
(12:14):
people would stop him and he would just talk and
talk and talk, and there was a whole group of
people waiting, but he was just willing to talk to anyone.
And I think that's what people loved about him so much.
And we appreciate you coming on sharing memories this morning.
I know so many people in the Indianapolis community, the
NFL community, were so touched by him, and it's a
huge loss this morning, So thank you for being with us.
Speaker 9 (12:37):
Thanks Erah, We love you, Jim the rest of peace.
Speaker 11 (12:40):
Brother.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Roger Goodell put out a lengthy statement as you can imagine,
in part, Jim Ursay was a friend, a man deeply
committed to his family, the game, the Colts, and the
Indianapolis community. Jim Ersay has passed away at the age
of sixty five. We remember him this morning on GMFB.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
He will be sorely missed.
Speaker 12 (13:12):
Good Morning Football is brought to you by Liberty Mutual Insurance.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
Only pay for what you need.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
We are so happy this morning to be joined on
GMFB by a Super Bowl winning defensive back and Chris
Harris along with a man that's clearly coordinated outfits this
morning with Kyle Branton Joel McHale and as we are
about ten seconds away from coming on, Joel says, I
have no idea what we're doing, so I feel good.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Yes, I'm just excited about this. Yeah, push push controversy
that we're going to finally get in.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
We will dig into it. Kyle, how excited are you
about this?
Speaker 10 (13:48):
Well?
Speaker 5 (13:48):
Listen, I texted Joel last night as a friend. I said,
how you doing looking forward to it? We're not, And
Joel said, I think I might just drive to the
studio right now and sleep there all night, so I
make sure I get there on time. See, this is
animal control, Joel, except we're the animals, and in this case,
you're the animal.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
Welcome to the show.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Well, I am wearing a shock collar right now because
the NFL said I could not leave the studio until
seven forty five. So and I said, what about eating
or maybe drinking something? And they're like, well, you just
try to get through that entrance right there, you'll feel shock.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
I man, huge, huge news. Are you ready for this?
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I'm I'm come on out nervous.
Speaker 12 (14:28):
I know, Chris, hurry, this is going I'm mad I
didn't get the jersey.
Speaker 9 (14:31):
You know that.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
No wait wait, show him your callar when you said
down look at look at this guy's it's all decked
out here.
Speaker 12 (14:37):
I'm just mad I didn't get the jersey infl today.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
You got a Friday with us, and I know you're
a Slahawks fan. This works out.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
Great player's jersey.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Big news that went Chris's way yesterday because he was,
you know, didn't want to spend extra time at practice
working on this thing. No, it didn't go your way.
I should say, yeah, it did not go your way.
You were against the Toush push. It's staying around, which
means Chris is going to have to if he was
still playing, spend extra time at practice preparing for this thing.
Really annoys Commissioner Roger Goodell talk to the media after
(15:08):
the decision, the.
Speaker 11 (15:11):
Downfield blocking and the Toush push. At the end of
the day, that's all one for the committee to look at.
We'll see how it plays out this season with some
of the changes that Rich mentioned and the focus on
the committee, and then we'll come back and we'll discuss
those as we always do every year. What's the right
way to go forward? So I think the discussion was
helpful to us and what we want to focus on
(15:34):
this season.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
He is thrilled, don't you think?
Speaker 6 (15:37):
I know?
Speaker 4 (15:37):
I want to talk about what if Kyle had to say? Kyle,
are you reading this? It's better if I read it
as Kyle the toush push lives good. Now do it
week ten Packers on Monday Night football. Do it the
first play of the game, do it ten times during
the game. Then do it the last play of the
game instead of a kneel down. That is the Kyle
Brandt taking to Twitter.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
I did it right after breakfast with who.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
Hello brand muffin coffee?
Speaker 9 (16:10):
Look out? I hear you.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Does Roger Goodell seem excited or not excited? Or is
that the usual reaction he gives to.
Speaker 12 (16:17):
News business like that's kind of Roger Goodell. And you know,
with this not being banned, it's gonna be guys having
to prepare every week for this. You got to have
a strategy when you play the Eagles. You got to
try to keep those keep those guys in third and
long right, try to win first and second down. You
cannot let them get thirty mediums, third and short. So
it's gonna be a long touch push today. So guys
(16:40):
in the NFL, especially on the defense, keep these guys
in third and long man. Then you got a chance
to keep them out of that play.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
People stop it. You've stopped it.
Speaker 6 (16:47):
Well, we stopped it.
Speaker 12 (16:48):
With the Saints, so hopefully y'all got the clips so
you can show that you got to get low. We
see this man.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Here we go, here we go.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
Take us through what's happening right now.
Speaker 12 (16:57):
You got to get low, and you got to get
a line fast because the Eagles, they line up on
the ball fast.
Speaker 6 (17:02):
Try to hurry you up.
Speaker 12 (17:03):
But it's all about that push from your nose guard.
If you don't have a big, stout nose guard up
front that could move move the center, especially a guy
like Jason Kelse, you're gonna have a tough time stopping this.
Speaker 9 (17:14):
Touch push man.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
And they perfected it right.
Speaker 12 (17:17):
They got four or five plays off the toush push
that you won't that you have to study for also,
so it brings in a lot of preparation every week,
and hopefully the guys on the defense could shut it
down so we don't have to hear about it anymore?
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Is this what you dreamed about in your career?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
You're like, this is what I'm did you go to
your agent, go get me on this? I'm hot on
this topic.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Get me on this show. I got takes on the
toush as a young actor.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
There was a lot of tush pushing and you had
to get low. You just had to get really low
if you wanted to get you made it. Yeah, it
was always it was and I was like, is this legal?
And finally you know it was Chris. Actually I watched
a lot of game footage from him and I got
low and that's how I got on community. Kyle. Oh
(18:04):
really yeah?
Speaker 5 (18:05):
Yeah, I thought that was going to be in your
book and you just gave us the whole story.
Speaker 6 (18:10):
Was it worth it? It's a pretty good show.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
I have two different books coming out and this takes
up a lot of real estate in it. Chris, did
you ever get hurt on the rejecting pushing back the.
Speaker 12 (18:22):
Oh no, no, I'm on the outside.
Speaker 9 (18:24):
We don't get in.
Speaker 12 (18:25):
That's what That's a D line and O line play
for defensive backs. We stay outside, We stay out the
traffic unless they run the ball outside.
Speaker 9 (18:31):
Wide on the third and short.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
But did you ever go below the turf to get
under the tush push and come up below them?
Speaker 12 (18:39):
No, if you go underneath, you're going to be stuck
down there, right, And that's the last place where you
want to go as a dB or a running back.
Anybody is in the bottom of that pile because you
know in the NFL they might do some dirty stuff
inside there.
Speaker 9 (18:51):
But yeah, you don't want.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
To be in there. I got to tell you.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
We we ran the clip of you guys stopping the
tush push, and that's great, but I mean, was that
was that Gardner Minshew doing the tush push? That's not
exactly the same thing as Jalen Hurts. That's like the
Kirkland brand toush push. Come on, dude, no.
Speaker 12 (19:07):
No, that's definitely different because we know Jalen Hurst is
squat like five hundred pounds, right, Yeah, he's a big quarterback.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
So but you see, not a lot. Not every team
can do it, right.
Speaker 12 (19:18):
All the other teams have tried it, and the Eagles
are the only ones that are very successful at doing it.
Even though Jalen Hurts isn't the biggest quarterback, so's they
perfected the technique and the fundamentals of what you got
to do right here and getting lower than everybody they
usually win.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
I love how excited your guys are. I mean, this
is like a It's incredible, Kyle.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Is this a win for the NFL or a win
for the Eagles or a win for everyone mankind?
Speaker 6 (19:44):
It's man and womankind, society, plane and Earth.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
It's also a huge surprise. I did not think it
was going to go this way, and I was not alone.
I thought all the momentum was going towards banning this thing,
not a football play on and on and on.
Speaker 6 (19:56):
I'm so happy right now.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
I mean, I'm genuinely, genuinely happy that I think justice
was served and they're going to get to keep it.
And there's people who are whining about it, throwing fits.
I like how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are handling it.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also in the NFC, also likely
playoff team. They go out on social media and they
start saying like, we're ready, can we bring it?
Speaker 9 (20:16):
Look at this.
Speaker 6 (20:16):
So they got Vita Vea and then they got Desmond Watson.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Who's four hundred and seventy pounds and it's like the
tweet says it right there from Trevis Sikima. The league
didn't ban the Toush push, so the Bucks did it themselves.
They're batting down the hatches, they're backing down, whatever you
want to call it. They are ready to stop this thing,
unlike the Packers, who are now the bullseye of the
Toush push and who play the Eagles week ten at
Lambo National Television, and I hope the Eagles run it
(20:42):
fifty times and the only time they don't run is
when they get to the goal line and headed to
their new running back aj Dillon, who's an ex Packer
that's going to be the one to watch now because
of this.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
And what the heck is wrong with Kirkland brand, Kyle,
that's the brand that I grew up with. But go ahead,
it's a quality brand.
Speaker 6 (21:00):
It's a quality brand. It's right down there.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
You know that when there's Joel there's Captain Crutch up here,
but there's like Kernel Crackle down by your knees. That's
the kind of Cereal id as well growing up, I
think relates.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
To Crackle brand.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
What do you yeah, it's the generic It's like rice
pops and all that stuff. But can we agree on this,
the fact that we now have the vote behind us.
I'm ready to stop saying the word tush. I'm tired
of saying it. It's an awkward word. We say it
all the time on TV. It's one of those words
like moist that's just not fun to say. After this discussion,
can we move on from the.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
Word tush for like a week at least?
Speaker 2 (21:36):
Is this a bad time to mention that Tucks Medicated
Pads will be sponsoring this section of the show.
Speaker 6 (21:43):
Little then? All right, the pads.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
Didn't have that on the bingo card?
Speaker 6 (21:50):
Okay, a bingo card?
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Oh yeah, we love.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
We got all kinds of stuff out here, you know.
So the Eagles continued with the I'm not going to
say the word right, So they're allowed to continue to
keep well doing what's right behind me.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
But here's the deal.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Are they now the villains of the NFL?
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Right?
Speaker 4 (22:07):
Because for so long, you know, everyone likes to pile
on a team they win the Super Bowl? This has
been their signature thing. Are the Eagles the villains these days?
Speaker 11 (22:16):
Drool?
Speaker 2 (22:17):
They mean, they had a pretty convincing Super Bowl win there,
and I think now people are coming for them. I
would think I think they need to buy a lot
more vasolene to grease those light poles now because they're
they're the one, They're the favorites.
Speaker 4 (22:33):
Right, I mean, I think there's a couple of other
teams that, yes, the defending Super Bowl champs, but are
there some heavy hitters.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Over who's who's the other enemy?
Speaker 9 (22:42):
Right now?
Speaker 4 (22:43):
I can think them on I would go with Chriss.
Speaker 12 (22:46):
When you when you can go to the to the championship.
The last three years, right almost three p the Kansas
City Chiefs are still the villains.
Speaker 9 (22:54):
Of the NFL.
Speaker 12 (22:55):
Right, they still got to go through the top doll.
Patrick Mahomes still to the number one quarterback in the NFL,
still got Andy Reid. They're going to be in the
AFC race every year.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
Now. Everybody loves the Eagles.
Speaker 12 (23:07):
I think everybody jumped on their bandwagon. They were kind
of happy to see KC lose. So I think it's
perfect time and for you know, for the Eagles, if
they can continue to build that dynasty, then maybe they
can be the villain. But right now, that top dog
still reigns and Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid and They're
still the most hated team in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Do you if they get to the Super Bowl and
lose again, is the dynasty over?
Speaker 3 (23:31):
I think everyone will say that it is.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (23:33):
Yeah, I think some people say that the dynasty's over now,
you know, but I don't think so. As long as
you got fifteen over there, you still got a chance
every year to win a championship.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Were you surprised by the Super Bowl result?
Speaker 6 (23:43):
Now?
Speaker 12 (23:44):
I wasn't surprised because the Eagles have some dogs they have.
It was a bad fit versus Casey, with Casey's old
line struggling the past year and they had to move.
They had a lot of backups on that old line,
and Eagles were tough up front and their secondary was stout.
So I thought it was a great matchup and the
Eagles should have been favored that game.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
Kyle, what do you got?
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Who's your villain?
Speaker 6 (24:05):
Well? I think actually I think Joel raises.
Speaker 5 (24:08):
An interesting question is like, is the Chiefs dynasty still alive?
Or did the Eagles end it? I mean they got
They didn't just lose a super Bowl. We saw Brady
lose super bowls. They got thumped. They did not show
up for that Super Bowl. They didn't belong on the.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
Field that day. During the dynasties we've.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Seen, you know, we know Montana never lost one, Brady
lost them, but in every single one, it was this
dramatic thing.
Speaker 6 (24:28):
And then the one they actually were getting thumped, they
came back from twenty eight to three. So is the
Chiefs dynasty still alive or did the Eagles break it?
Speaker 5 (24:36):
I think I don't think a dynasty survived that type
of ass whooping. And as far as villainry, I think
that I think that the Eagles ended the villains. I
think the Chiefs were the villains in the eyes of
so many and the Eagles became.
Speaker 6 (24:49):
Heroes for destroying them.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
Look forward to this season, though, it's going to be
different because I look to Nick Sirianni, who looks like
a villain. He reminds me of actually Joel's performance and
the bear like some people just want to punch through
the screen and destroy him. But Nick Sirianni now has
a pause where they tried to take his weapon from him.
And let's not forget Nick Siriani also has Bleep you
money now on the sideline.
Speaker 6 (25:11):
He has job.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Security, he has insecurity with the play.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
He has money. Nick Sirianni is going to be.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
An absolute feast of content next year. And if it
goes to making him a villain, I don't think he
gives a damn.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
I think it's it's hard to You said push, push
a lot, then you said ass whooping, and I thought, well,
we can say ass whooping, and then you said bleep,
So I don't It's hard to keep tracking. I'm gonna
believe me. I'm gonna play it safe. I will say.
You know who won the Super Bowl was whoever sold
Eagles tickets to the Eagles fans, because it was it
(25:45):
was like a home game. And I was at that game,
and every time anything happened good for the Eagles, it
was it was like they had scored and that they
were they were so far ahead in that way, it
was it was something to see. And then I don't
know if you knew this. Some of them were drinking.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Some of them were drinking. But here's some of that.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
A lot of that, I think, and just walking around
New Orleans has to be fatigued, right because not everybody
has money to go to the Super Bowl. It's really expensive,
like the hotels, the tickets, all of it.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Right, So if you're.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
So excited to go and see your team and you
spend all this money and you go see Kansas City,
when like that's your once in a life For a
lot of people, this is their once in a lifetime
family event. Well, Kansas City won, and then they won
and then they won, and so I remember walking around thinking,
when you've won that much, I mean, are you is
it is special? Look, you always want your team to win,
(26:36):
But if you went a year ago and you won
the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
Are you going to go again?
Speaker 4 (26:40):
I mean if money is no object, But that's just
not the reality. So that was one thing, was always
walking around thinking just how heavily that was an Eagles crowd.
And then the other thing, when we're talking villains, are
the Eagles of the villain? I mean, I think so
many people wanted to see Jalen Hurt so badly win
a super Bowl for the way that they didn't win
one before and the way that they had lost one,
And so yeah, I don't think of them as the
(27:02):
villains because I think so many people were rooting for Jalen,
people that had no interest in either team in terms
of like they're not part of.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
That fan base.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
You wanted to see this guy win his first one,
So no, I don't think he overnight then becomes the
villain I would. I'm I'm on Chris's side. I think
the Chiefs are still.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Here's the Eagles response.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
That's a really good response.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
Push on and it's simple, effective.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
And this it's the asymmetric, it's perfect, and it's the packers.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
Packers, you know what they're doing.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
And you can see his butt.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
Makes a place, fly around, play for children, many pickle shots.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
Super Cooper, his first chance as a pill, goes for six.
Speaker 6 (27:55):
The boy's gonna kill me. I didn't tell him. I
was miked up. That's a no.
Speaker 10 (27:57):
No.
Speaker 6 (27:59):
You guys hid it well.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
I didn't feel anything.
Speaker 4 (28:02):
Bill Bills, Well, the Bills seemed like a good spot
to start, going for two. If you like that Alan
Mike'd up, you're gonna love what HBO and NFL films
are sending your way during training camp. They're going to
know about the Mike's this time. The Bills are going
to be featured in this year's preseason hard Knocks, So
get excited.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Phil's Mafia. It is all about you, guys.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
Chris, what do you think about Buffalo being featured on Hardocks.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
You see Josh Allen. He's so likable, right, I like it.
Speaker 12 (28:29):
I think it's about time you were able to get
one of these teams that's been in the playoffs the past,
you know, five years that haven't got a chance to
be in the Hard Knocks. Now they changed the rules.
Now we're allowed to see the Bills make it, make
that jump, and I'm excited to see Josh Allen. I
haven't really gotten a jump start in his career his personality.
All I've known is from Von Miller being his teammate,
(28:50):
knowing the type of guy that he is. That he's
a fun, caring guy teammate and very energetic in the
locker room. So I'm excited to get a first hand
looking there on HBO, get.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
To see Kean Coleman.
Speaker 12 (29:03):
You know, he's hilarious as a receiver, being their number
one receiver for Davious why Zobey Bosa.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
I mean it's I think it's gonna be great.
Speaker 12 (29:10):
I'm glad they picked the move.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
I'm not interested. No, I think it's a I do
like the like. I am a Seahawks fan. I bleed
green and Blue and I don't like it when any
other team gets any other attention. But I've always liked
the Bills, and Gronk is from there, and he's an
untalented athlete and has done nothing with his career. But
(29:34):
I love Lee of Schreiber's voice more. As more exciting
things happen in that show, liv Schreiber gets more drowsy
and more relaxed, and I could listen to him talk
for years. So I'm very, very excited for them. And
I think Josh Allen is he's going to have long
after his career is over. He's going to be a
(29:55):
pitch He's so likable and he can be a pitch
man for the rest of his life. It really drives
me insane with jealousy, Joel.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
If the Hard Knocks had done the Seahawks over the
last twenty years, what would be a player that you'd
want to see get followed around by the cameras and
get the libs riber treatment.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Well, mar John Lynch is possibly the most watchable player
in the NFL in the last twenty years. I mean
eating skittles and some cognac before the game and then
creating beast mode out of nothing. I mean I know
that he's been followed around quite a bit, and I've
been on his podcast, I've I went to his theme park.
(30:33):
He's he is a real personality and I love him.
And you know the time when Russell Wilson was there,
when the whole city was completely electric and continues to be.
Let's say, we're very excited for every season and every game.
Yeah so, I think. But if we're going way back,
oh man, that early Largent probably who seemed like such
(30:58):
a clean cut, perfect receiver, and then you would see
him that you've seen the footage of him like and
down guys and stepping on their backs. I'd like to see.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
That Largent the original exciting white gloveless as well, too,
Like we would have loved Large and Backless an actual
film getting shot.
Speaker 6 (31:16):
Hairlet's and loveless. All right.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
My take on the bills getting Hard Knocks is, you
know there's always this reaction of oh no, this is
not good. We don't want the cameras in there. It's disruptive.
The Hard Knocks teams never do squad, It never pans out.
Have you ever taken a moment to look over the
years of Hard Knocks and looked at the quarterbacks that
they have featured on those teams. I saw Dell Reed
(31:39):
retweeted someone who said something similar. Let's just do a
rundown and you tell me when we get to the
first team All Pro last year Caleb a rookie, Then
we have forty year old Rogers, twenty twenty two Lions Golf,
who's probably the best. It's Dak It's Rams Golf, It's
rookie Baker, it's Jamis, it's case Keenum, it's Andy Dalton.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
You're not seeing Mahomes and Lamar and Burrow.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
Of course those teams don't get to the playoffs and
do great things. Really, why do the Heart Knocks team
never win the Super Bowl? Well, why don't the Fast
and Furious movies ever win Academy Awards?
Speaker 6 (32:09):
Because Daniel da Lewis is not playing Dom Toretto. They
get other people, They.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
Get low end quarterbacks and guys on the way up. So,
of course those teams don't work out. You have Josh Allen,
you have the MVP. Don't worry about some little reality show.
It's going to be shot in August. Okay, everybody relaxes.
There's no Madden curse, no hard Knocks. Curse enough to
talk about curses and all that nonsense. Just go kick
the crap out of people. And yes, Joel, I just
(32:33):
said crap again. I'm going blue today.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
I just like how people go, well, you know, after
all the all that practicing, they're all some of the
best athletes in the planet. Now we have that they're cursed.
Nothing we can do, Oh, nothing we can do. Or
maybe they're just going to be great and execute well
and win a bunch of games. I think they should
do a separate Hard Knocks on. I don't like the Browns.
(32:57):
They won three games last year and.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Their quarterback room is incredible. They don't have mics to
make up the whole quarterback room.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
Yeah you get flavor flaved host that and it's a
whole other show.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
You can pitch it.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
I'm into it.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
So here here's our second one.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
The Commanders maybe could be on next year's Hard Knocks.
The passion for football has been on full display after
their twenty twenty four campaign found him in the NFC Championship.
Just ask Commanders Foundation chairman Marjorie Harris. There is so
much to look forward to, and look, the Commanders are
America's team WHOA, those are fighting words there.
Speaker 6 (33:37):
What the Jones.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
Family would maybe like a word on the America's Team discourse,
although seth Rawlins was on yesterday and he said he's
had enough of that, saying, as it pertains to the
Cowboys that the Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl
since the nineteen ninety five season, is it time to
bestow another franchise with that title?
Speaker 12 (33:58):
Chris, I think it's time. You know, Casey has been
the team over you know this decade, have been dominating
and they kind of took that torch from the Patriots.
You know, they were kind of that America's team during
the time of Tom Brady and then it kind of
passed to Patrick Mahomes and now Jayden Daniels could be
the next guy up right, I think fans are pretty
(34:18):
much fed up with the Cowboys and Dak Prescott and
those guys and not being able to get over the hump.
And we've seen how good Daniels was able to play
this year as a rookie, right, taking that team far
in the playoffs, and they're very exciting team to watch.
So the Commanders are getting They're very close right in
they're in Washington, DC, they're They're in the Mecca right,
They're riding the prime spot.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
So I'm excited to see what they do.
Speaker 12 (34:42):
But right now, I would say the Chiefs are the
America's teams. Then the Commanders definitely have a shot.
Speaker 6 (34:48):
No, here's the Seattle.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Has there ever been a West Coast team that's been
America's team?
Speaker 5 (34:55):
No, forty nine ever, maybe forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Maybe you're and it's never gonna be well built. It's like, hey,
there may be America's team. So I don't when Joe
Montana time, yeah, my dad always couldn't stand when he
was like, he was like, everyone's America's team. Why would
they get to who says that just because they have cheerleaders?
This time my dad talks yes, uh And I would
be like, yeah, why is that? Why can't they we
(35:19):
have the Seagulls and uh. So I don't know, it's
a weird thing to put on a team. So I'm
just gonna say, no he did.
Speaker 6 (35:28):
Yeah, I don't. I'm into it.
Speaker 5 (35:31):
Okay, I agree with Joel and I think it's I
think it's honestly a ridiculous quote coming from the Commanders
that were America's team.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Now you guys, you've had one good season. Take it easy.
I've loved everything going on with the commanders too, and
the coach and the quarterback. It's great.
Speaker 5 (35:44):
You're like nine months removed from being like something on
the bottom of someone's boot. Now we're America's team. Like
that's the kind of time when everybody switches on you.
When you declare yourself, then everyone wants to be the
enemy of you. So they're gonna have to win this
year at least get a second winning season.
Speaker 6 (36:01):
But I would look at one team. Everybody likes to
say the.
Speaker 5 (36:04):
NFL is better when this team is winning, and they
say that about like twenty teams.
Speaker 6 (36:08):
There's only twelve teams they don't say that about.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
But I think there's one above all when they this
the NFL is better when this team's winning.
Speaker 6 (36:14):
I think it's the Raiders. I think the race. It'd
be very cool if the Raiders worked.
Speaker 5 (36:18):
And I think even if you don't care about the
Raiders and you've never seen a Raiders game, I still
think it would be fun. And the pageantry and there's Brady,
there's Brady, and there's the new stadium and there's new
Las Vegas.
Speaker 6 (36:29):
I just think it would be fun.
Speaker 5 (36:30):
I have to ask you, Joel, what do you think
about that man sitting on the right.
Speaker 6 (36:34):
As a longtime Seahawks fan seeing that image, what do you.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Think it's gonna say? From the image before? I was like,
they're one haircut away from looking like a real front office.
But yep, I love Pete Carroll and they're gonna make
statues to Pete Carroll in Seattle. And he's done. When
he coached at thirteen out of the fourteen seasons, he
went to the playoffs and he changed the city completely,
and he's always and I think you guys have probably
(37:01):
met him a few times, and he's so kind and
it's a His brand is exactly what he has put forth.
And so I think they're going to be They're gonna
be really good. The only thing about the Raiders you
have to be careful is that tunnel going from the
Mandalay Bay and so people already had eighteen yard marks
going to the game and they might not be sure
(37:21):
what game are at. So I think they're one. The
thing that's a little bit hard for the Raiders right
now is the home because everyone wants to go to
Las Vegas to see their team play, so it might
be a p It might be a problem getting that
same home crowd feeling like with Seattle, where when the
crowd starts yelling, tsunamis begin forming and hitting Bainbridge Island.
Speaker 6 (37:44):
I like a.
Speaker 5 (37:45):
Beverage where you have to wear it on a lanyard
around your neck just for the weight of it to
carry it around like that. But Joe, let me give
you a multiple choice question. All Right, we just saw
Pete Carroll coach of the Raiders, which is the hardest
one to look at when it happened. Is it Pete
Carroll being the Raiders coach, Richard Sherman being a forty
nine er, Russell Wilson being a bronco or Peter Schrager
(38:07):
being on ESPN.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
Ooh, I'm going to say allegedly, I haven't watched Schrager
is the That's the freshest wound. And uh And now,
because I'm sure people watching this are going like this
guy is going to be the replacement and you're like no, no, no, no,
he's just here for two days, and they're like, oh,
thank God, find somebody that can do this, like Chris.
(38:31):
Uh boy, are I think the worst thing that for
us was that, you know, the Super Bowl against the Patriots.
That will even to bring it up, it's hard for
me to even think about. So just thinking about Arizona
and that and everything that happened there, it was, it
was all bad. And then I had to just as
a Seattle fan, I just go, Okay, we still have Starbucks,
(38:54):
we still have Microsoft, we still have Boeing, we still
have the Mariners, we still who are doing great.
Speaker 6 (39:00):
By the rock stars are dead though, that sucks.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Who's dead most of the rock Where are you from?
Speaker 6 (39:07):
Where?
Speaker 9 (39:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (39:10):
Chicago? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (39:11):
So what's the biggest band out of Chicago lately?
Speaker 9 (39:15):
Lately? Nothing?
Speaker 6 (39:16):
But I don't know.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
Chance the rapper is. That's the band Smashing Pumpkins that
was back in the day.
Speaker 6 (39:21):
They're pretty cool. They're still with us.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, we've got Yeah, we still have Kurt, we still
got Jimmy and Bruce. Lee went to the University of Washington,
so top that.
Speaker 6 (39:30):
Oh really? Yeah? Oh cool? All right, I like it.
