Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Welcome to Good Morning Football. We're live in LA in
New York. It's Thursday, August seventh. There are games, preseason
games play tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
I'm Jamie Art. All this is mans.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'd say, oh, Kyle, Brent, Will Blackman. I sound very
serious right now, Kyle.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
It's with intention.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
We have a segment coming up this hour that is
we take so seriously. It's so intense, it's.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
So fast talking.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
There's a timer, there's a buzzer, there's conversation. It has
I mean, I'm ready to roll.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I know you are, Jamie, and I'm ready for throw
down Thursday.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
We got a buzzer.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Whoever is in the buzzer is always always really really
free and loose and open with hitting the buzzer. Don't
worry hit me with the buzzer on our way out
because we're about to start the second hour.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Oh my god, there's a train. Good Morning Football, morning
Zoom style.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
Good mon football.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
That's right, Good morning Football. Everybody, welcome inside. We love you,
thanks for being here. Jamie Art Almant, I sayo, Will Blackman,
Kyle Grant in New York, Kyle, can you read tell
the story that everyone loves hearing, mostly me that there
was one time an NFL executive that said he loved
this segment so much. And why is it the friend
that you are going to have on the show later,
Jeff Miller.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
We've done Throwdown Thursday for years. It's not Jeff Miller.
It's an executive who's no longer with us, not in life,
but in the show. And this person was saying to
me always at the start of the opening block of
the Thursday show, when you do the Throwdown Thursday, I
have to go to a meeting or I have to
do something, but I can't walk away until the end
of that Throatown Thursday because I know the third topic,
(01:49):
the final topic, is always going to keep me riveted.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
So that is our tea. Is the end.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
It's like one of those Instagram videos where it's like
watch till the end, you won't believe it, and then
it's something done at the end. This is actually fun
at the end, So stay where you are, watch the
whole second.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, make sure you follow and like and save this
video just to make sure we get the proper amount
of eyeballs on it. Here we go throw it down
Thursday on GMF BET. Tomorrow night, the Commanders play the Patriots.
They've been having joint practices this week. Drake May was
selected third overall last year and impressed everyone in his
rookie campaign.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
You could say the same for Jayden and Daniels.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
But May was asked about how much does he try
to keep pace with last year's ap offensive Rookie of
the Year.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Who's been on the field with him this week?
Speaker 6 (02:29):
Jayden dinnis, it was.
Speaker 7 (02:31):
Always in the back of your mind, you know, the
draft class came in with, and anytime you play him especially,
it's a little different. But yeah, like you said, I
think I'm just trying to worry about myself. But at
the end of the day, I'll key up those guys.
Those guys are you know, him and Caleb and Bo.
Those guys are good, good friends of mine and the
other friends until we play each other.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Friends until they play each other. This is looking ahead
to the twenty twenty five season, the second year for
both Drake May and Jayden Daniels. Listen, we try to
cover all thirty two appropriately, Kyle, but there are some teams, players,
coaches that you feel a little bit more personally invested
in their success, but also sometimes they're pitfalls. Kyle, who
are you more invested in this season?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Drake May or Jaden Daniels.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Well, I'm invested in new content, new storylines, new things
to talk about. So my answer here is Drake May
because I want the AFC to have a Jaden Daniels.
I want a young sensation like Jaden was last year
in the NFC. Frankly, I'm ready for someone to bust
into that private club that mahomes Alan Burrow Club, you know,
(03:34):
justin Herbert's always sitting outside waiting to get in, kind
of with the velvet rope there. I want a young
sensation to be like enough of those guys there are
a bunch of old heads at this point. I'm young,
I'm new, I have the right coach. I'm in a
division that's been getting kind of lazy. I would love
it if Drake May became a guy, or Bo Nicks
for that matter, but he's not part of this t up.
I can only say Drake May or Jaden. We have
(03:56):
Jaden in the NFC. I think he's going to be
fantastic for years to come. I want a young sensation
in the AFC. If you think about Drake May's draft class,
it's all these NFC guys, It's Commanders and Bears and
Falcons and Vikings. There's only one of them in the AFC.
And I want Drake Made to be the guy who
ascends this year. Like, wow, welcome to the Drake May era.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
We're here. He's got to have to play ball to
do it.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (04:18):
No, I'm invested just the reason you said why. And
Jayden Daniels like he is, he made. He threw his
name in the hat in this golden era of quarterbacks,
and especially in his own division.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
I mean you have now Russell Wilson's in.
Speaker 8 (04:30):
There, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, like right now, what.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
Jayden Daniel's doing. He's now since it is.
Speaker 8 (04:34):
Thrown on Thursday, he's like, he's like John Jones throwing
his name into the light heavyweight You got Showgun? Who
you got Rashaud Evans, Quentin Jackson, Chuck Ledell, all these
guys who are going bow for blow in the light
heavyweight division. And now John Jones is coming through and
that's Jayde and Daniels in this situation, he's nipping at
the heels.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
He's through his name already.
Speaker 8 (04:52):
In some top ten people's list in terms of the
best quarterbacks in the league. So right now, for me,
I'm invested to see what Jade and Daniel does in
year or two.
Speaker 6 (04:59):
Can he consistently be that guy?
Speaker 5 (05:01):
Yeah, it's going to be a hard I think Jayden
Daniels there's so much carry over with Cliff Kingsbury as
his OC again.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
Now I'm gonna go Drake May.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
And the reason why I'm gonna go Drake May is
there's so much unknown with him. Like last year, I
don't think we saw the best of Drake May. He's
in the system that his number one target was his
tight end Hunter Henry, and the O line really struggled
with the pass prowl.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
Going into this year.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
You get a you know, it's so funny that this
called throw down. You have a head coach now that's
literally down to throw down on the practice field.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
You have a.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Revamped O line, and you have actually a wide receiver one.
So if I'm looking at these guys, I'm looking at
how dynamic Jaden Daniels was. However, there's still some question
marks as to what Drake May can do for me,
not like he didn't play.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
He played really really well with what he had last year.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
But you have a guy like that with Stefan Diggs,
now that's on your team. That is going to be
a security blanket for you, or can be. And so
I got to go with Drake may on this.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
It's a good point about Mike Vraebel.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
But I think if you did a throw down between
Verbel and dan Quinn, I think dan Quinn can scrap
so like that would also be a really good throw down.
Speaker 8 (06:04):
In box every morning. Dan Quinn boxes every morning at
five o'clock.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
There we go. There's a segment and of itself, all right.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Moving on, The Eagles host the Bengals tonight for their
first preseason game. Jamar Chase, as you know, has new
accessory as a necklace because he is.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
A member of the ninety nine club On Madden.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
AJ Brown has gone on to say that Jamar Chase
he was the best wide receiver in football during training camp.
Which wide receiver duo would you rather have with the
game on the line, Jamar Chase and T Higgins the
Bengals or AJ Brown and DeVante Smith.
Speaker 8 (06:33):
Well, give me Jamar Chase game on the line, game
on the line, give me Jamar Chase and whoever. That's
why I feel Jamar Chase. He's basically he's obij and
Jarvis Langy in one. But he has he has the skill,
the body control, the flare of the style of OBJ,
and he has the toughness in the heart drivers Lange.
(06:55):
It just so happens that his partner and T Higgins
could be a number one receiver on any team.
Speaker 6 (07:01):
In the NFL.
Speaker 8 (07:01):
So game on the line, give me Jamar chasement I
just I think he's just unguardable triple prong winner. We
know all his that's what he can do right now,
receiver one, give me him versus anybody.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
Oh yeah, it's a hard that's that's a hard guy
to guard. But you know, when I think about this duo,
both duos.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I gotta also consider the team.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
Okay, because the Bengals, to your point, where Jamar Chase
Anti Higgins, they had been in the must win situation.
Matter of fact, it was right across the street at
Sofi Stadium when they played in the Super Bowl, and
we all saw what happened when Aaron Donald just ruined everything.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
So this has nothing to do has nothing to do
with the duo.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
I'm going with the Eagles. Why because at least I
know that.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
That old lion for the Philadelphia Eagles are going to
give the AJ Brown and Smith an opportunity to catch
the ball.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
And if they happened.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
To send the blitz, I know that Jalen Hurts will
scramble to get the ball to one of these two targets.
So this is beyond these duos. That's how I looked
at it. Will look at it will. It's if the
game was on the line, I know that the quarterback's
going to be safe and you could at least get
it to one.
Speaker 6 (08:07):
Of those two receivers and A J. Browners the Banca Smith.
So I had to go with the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Man, TI, I respect it.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
That's what we call here in Good Morning Football, some
heavy lifting, and it serves the segment better that not
everyone has the same answer, so somebody comes up with
a creative way to go with the other answer, pointing
out the Eagles offensive lineup. That's heavy lifting, and that's fantastic.
I respect it. I do it all the time. But
here I'm just going to take the Bengals. No heavy lifting,
just dumb bicep curls in the mirror, very easy ad.
(08:35):
Anyone could do them. Yeah, no, no, none of that.
It's just all simple stuff. Listen, Jamar Chase is the
shiny object here. It's hard to pick against the Bengals.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
You know what, I was going to try.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
To make the case initially when this question just got
posed that, well, you go with the Eagles because you
know they've been in bigger games and nip that's nonsense.
Jamar Chase and t Higgins have been in huge playoff games.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
They've been in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
T Higgins had a massive touchdown in the Super Bowl
against the Rams in which he beat Jalen Ramsey. They've
been in all the big games. They've not won them
like the Super Bowl Eagles have. But i mean, listen,
another one you could throw in right now. You could
throw in Jefferson and Addison on the Bikings too, and
I'm still taking the Bengals. There's something against them right now,
despite the heavy lift in which I respect man time.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Sometimes it is a heavy lift to your point, but
it is August, it is pre season, and we're seeing
the social media teams from the various organizations sometimes visitors
come to camp and the lift is not that heavy.
The Chicago Bears had a special guest at their training
camp yesterday. It was a UFC champion. They sent out
the video and people went wild over it.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
You don't like the mindle a champion?
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Me?
Speaker 8 (09:38):
I looked up for god, how are you?
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (09:42):
Why Timmy Camon And it's gonna do that's gonna teach
you something?
Speaker 7 (09:45):
What kind of do with my brother and my dad
next time the tournament?
Speaker 6 (09:47):
And I said, you can?
Speaker 4 (09:47):
You want to hurt them?
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Which is done?
Speaker 6 (09:49):
I want to just get them to be like, oh no,
I'm done.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
I'm done.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
We're staying.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
You didn't want to keep keep them hit them. Let
me get out of here right here here, thank you.
It's things heavy or thought that's broad.
Speaker 6 (10:11):
Thank you guys so much here.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
I don't want to hurt this on TJ big fans
of Yeah you too, maybe.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
No.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
I appreciate you coming out and I decided to watch
it hard.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
You gotta go.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Man.
Speaker 6 (10:30):
If I was doing something.
Speaker 8 (10:31):
Else, I'll tell you man, I brought.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
That's the one I r If I could do something else,
probably this sounds a good time.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
You can talk about it.
Speaker 8 (10:38):
Yeah, they don't because he's gonna already appreciate a live man,
all right.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
So it's it's long And that was the backup quarterback
for the Bears at the beginning, Tysonvaging.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
It's a go a good question.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
It was a lot of Dracus du plusy. I believe
again you have me wade into these waters of combat
and I'm trying to say these names. It's just like,
make sure I stick the landing on it. Here's the throatdown,
will Which is a better thrill in sports? Is it
a UFC knockout or anything else that could happen in
a sporting event?
Speaker 3 (11:11):
The field as we call it. You have seen knockout
or the field.
Speaker 8 (11:14):
I'm gonna take the field, and I love me a
good knockout in boxing and football UFC, I'm gonna take
the field for me. It is a buzzer beater in
basketball and context though game can't be tied, you have
to be losing. That matters like yea, when you're tied up,
and you should, there's nothing like at worse, it goes
to overtime. When you're losing, you hit a buzzer beater
(11:35):
right there at the and win the game for me,
that takes everything because you look, you miss, you lost.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
Game is over.
Speaker 8 (11:40):
So for me, it is a buzzer beater right now,
I think that's the Villanova National Championship versus North Carolina
right there, out standing, right there.
Speaker 6 (11:48):
Down, boom bang, buzzer beater. Game over.
Speaker 8 (11:50):
For me, there's nothing like it, nothing at all.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
I like the context.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
That context is important, Will and I'm glad you.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
Yes, they have to be losing now.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
I would say it's a football hit, but we can't
hit people that hard anymore, so it's gotta be the
UFC fights. Guys like love watching UC fights that knockout
might want a good buddy of mine. Max Holloway Blessed
Holloway on the Blessed Express. He has this thing where
he points down to the ground with ten or fifteen
seconds left in the last round of a fight every
single fight, and the rule is you don't block, you
(12:20):
just swing. And he had one, an epic one a
few months ago where he knocked a dude out with
like one second left on the clock, and it's one
of those moments that for me, I try not to
sound barbaric or anything like that, but I just like,
can't wait I'm like, I knocked somebody out, knocked somebody out. Yeah,
Like that's how I get one. I want they keep
taking the bait, like, don't squirret with.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
Him in ten seconds Like, ah, yeah, they do it. Bro.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
I don't want to sound barbaric, but Kyle, Yeah, well,
the buzzer beating knockouts are pretty rare. But the fun
of watching a knockout in MMA is that you're sitting
there watching and watching, and maybe it's the second round,
the third.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Round, and then ah, and they'll freak out.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
In the announcing and the rogan and the whole broadcast
crew the way that they it's really an adrenaline and
spike and it is really fun to watch if you
can stomach that kind of stuff. But listen, I'm keeping
it right here at the old National Football League.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Not a lot of people agree with me.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Maybe they do, but I think the most exciting play
in the NFL in pro football, I love a blocked punt.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
It is so crazy, so out of nowhere.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
And this is the last time it happened in the
Super Bowl. This is Tom tupa way back then he
gets blocked by.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
The Raiders in a game the Raiders will get crushed him.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
But we haven't seen when in the Super Bowl in
over two decades. It's just you kind of mentally tune
out a little bit as a viewer when the team
is punting. You know you're not really paying at one
hundred percent attention. And then some guy who maybe you
don't even know on special teams or the announcers don't know,
blocks it. It's bouncing everywhere, there's a punter trying to
pick it up.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
There's special Tier.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
It's just complete chaos and disarray, and it's so unexpected.
The block punt is my favorite play in all of
the NFL. I love a knockout in UFC. The problem
is if you watch a whole card of six fights,
like you've seen like four knockouts already, and the guy
gets knocked out and literally falls into a blood stain
on the canvas from three fights ago, so it's like
(14:15):
you've seen a lot of them.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Block punts are so rare, it's like seeing a whale.
It's just awesome. I love Kyle.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
I love these questions because everybody goes and I'm allowed
to formulate my opinion as it happens, and like I
hear yours will and give it to me, though, when
it's like a fifteen seed over a two seed and Nana,
that's really However, if I utter the words to you,
and if there are one hundred and sixty two regular
season games of baseball, if I even say the words
to you play at the plate, that just makes the
(14:43):
entire stadium stand up. Give me a play at the plate.
In baseball, specifically in the MLB, it's the same thing, Kyle.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Everyone's like starts freaking out, and it's the.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Kind of thing that, like a block punt, everyone kind
of stands up immediately. Play at the plate is like
a slow stands because you can see it unfolding and
you're like, oh God, the right fielder has it, and
that guy, oh the coach is sending or the manager
or whatever you call him, third base coach.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Is sending him. Play at the plate to me would
be over a us.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
What is the play at the plate?
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Okay, okay, okay, tell what that is. There's a runner
on second. Let's say this runner on second in baseball,
hitter hits a ball. Let's say a drop over second
base into right field on the hop. Right fielder gets it,
and there is a coach on third base and he
is either telling the runner stops ups up or sending him.
And it's even better is if the coach is telling
him to stop and the player goes anyway. He hits
(15:30):
that bag rounding third and if play at the plate,
the ball, it looks like is that thing going to
get there? At the same time, catcher has to catch
and do the most impeccable.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Tag sweep at the plate, usually when they head first.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Dive, and it is so great play at the plate
any day.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Of the week.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
One of the details I love the plays at the
plate is sometimes on the same hit, there's other runners.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
Who have already scored, like maybe they scored from third,
and as.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
The guys running third, they're going like they're standing.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
There to try to make him slide.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
If you guys have been watching the Little League World Series,
I think they broadcasted on the Worldwide Leader. Yesp and
the Mothership. There was an incredible play at the plate.
It's the closest play you've ever seen at any level
of baseball, and it was like an inch difference between
the kids cleat and the glove.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
The umpires looked at it and reversed the call.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
It was really controversial playing the plates are hot right now,
so I think it's a great call.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Play at the play also, Kyle, not to be confused
with if the play, if the runner realizes he's not
going to make it, he stops, and you're right, Kyle,
if there's runners behind him, then they.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
All have to reverse course. Plays at the plate. Yeah,
thanks appreciating.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
We'll just run the catcher over you know, or that too.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Then we're back in the time.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
We used to be able to do that.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Yeah, and then Buster Posey got hurt and they changed
all the rules, so it used to be even better.
Ray Fox Blast Pete Rose into the fifth It's incredible.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Like Save Save, Oh, everyone's it's just fantastic. All right,
it's good morning football, Jamie not plays at the plate.
You know, they're self fulfilling prophecies and then they're self
producing segment.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
We like the latter.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
On GMFB earlier this week, Kyle brought to our attention
a fan who was not so happy with us about
our Cowboys talk on the show.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
You know, yesterday I got a note over the internet
through social media from someone who watches the show. I
don't know this person. This guy's name is Bill, and listen,
listen what he says. He says, I watched GMFB all
the time. But he says he's getting frustrated. There are
thirty two teams in the NFL, and all the program
talks about us the Dallas Cowboys in their camp. Even
if you do briefly talk about another team, goes back
to the Cowboys and Jerry Jones. Bill, I hear you.
(17:37):
I hear you, and I hate that. I don't want
you to feel that way because that goes against everything
we feel about this show.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
All right, Bill, this one's for you. We got Mad
Minute on death and normally when.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
We played this game in the regular season, it's about
the matchup Instead, Bill, this is for you.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
We have half a.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Dozen teams, I believe, and on my piece of paper
when I'm in charge of Mad Minute, the Cowboys are
not on the clock. We give sixty seconds per team,
a couple sec twenty seconds a guy, and we're gonna go.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Around the horn.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
We begin with a game that's on NFL Network tonight,
and again the two teams that are in it. So
the Colts play tonight on NFL Network.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Kyle start the clock.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
All right, we talked about this earlier.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Everyone's split on Daniel Jones versus Anthony Richardson. I'm still
standing squarely in the Anthony Richardson camp. I don't know
if he's gonna win this job, but I have seen
Daniel Jones play a lot of football, be it for
a different team. I want it to be Anthony Richardson,
higher talent, homegrown coult I hope. I don't know what
he's playing or when he's gonna play the Priests.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
But I want it to be him.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
Yeah, I don't know who's going to be the quarterback,
but I do know who they have, Josh Towns. Michael Pittman.
I'm really excited about Tyler Warren, the rookie out of
Penn State, because I know Shane Steichen wants to run
what the Eagles had with the RPO system. So whoever
is that quarterback that got a lot of good weapons
over there for the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
That's exactly what Shane needs to do.
Speaker 8 (18:54):
Take all the film from with the Eagles that last year,
what Hurts and Saquon, and do exactly that with Anthony
Richardson and Jonathan Tail.
Speaker 6 (19:01):
Do the exact same thing. That's all you need. It's
a copycat league. Mins.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
There is a rookie running back for the Colts that Kyle.
We should keep an eye out on DJ Giddons.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
I believe that we should.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Maybe he'd be like an angry runs watch kind of guy.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
So that's happening.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
It's Colts Ravens tonight seven pm Eastern on NFL Network.
Moving on Carolina Panthers tomorrow Friday night, seven pm Eastern, Manti.
When you see that baby blue and the Panther in
the middle there or how do you feel?
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Well?
Speaker 5 (19:28):
I think it's underrated what Dan Morgan, the general manager
for the Carolina Panthers, have done in such a short
amount of time. You know, defensively, I think it's to
be determined. We don't know defensively what they have, but
underrated offense is what they have.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
In my opinion.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
You have a run game with Chuba Hubbard, who his
the first one thousand yard rusher that they've had since
Christian McCaffrey, and then they surrounded him with a whole
bunch of offensive weapons on the receiver standpoint. But I'm
really looking forward to watching Hunter run for and Jimmy
Horn Junior. I think Jimmy Horn Junior is very explosive.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Right now.
Speaker 8 (20:00):
Just go just go five wide all day, Just go
five y empty formation and just let them go. Let
him cook versus these receivers, and let's go.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
I think the Panthers are hot. I kind of have
a crush on the Panthers. I'm not kidding.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
I think about doing something irresponsible for the Panthers. I
think the Panthers are going to start the season two
and one. I don't care write it down.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
They start.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
They open with Jacksonville Cardinals Falcons two and one. I
know it's not a bullet priiction three and No, it's
the Panthers we're talking about. If you watched them last year,
they were good two and one to start the season.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
When you said irresponsible a Tan Skyle, I thought you
were going to talk about showing that logo in the
first week in September. But just saying they're gonna be
two and one, that's not that irresponsible just yet. But
I like them too and working with it all right.
Moving on, The Texans play on Saturday against the Vikings
four pm Eastern on NFL Network. The Houston Texans Will
trying to have.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
A hot start.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
New OC.
Speaker 6 (20:56):
No problem.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
C J.
Speaker 8 (20:57):
Stroud's coming back, getting to his groove. You got Christian
Kirk from the Jackson the Jaguars. You know, right now
I think ting Dell still ended up leave and so yeah,
I mean I think right now like it is time
for c to try to get back to who he
was his rookie year. So I'm excited to watch them.
I'm excited to watch him do his thing. So yeah,
there you go, Texas, Let's go Gokay.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
The Stroud thing is it should be this spectacular, massive story.
It's just all those quarterbacks in the AFC, in the
top tier club get talked about so much. I touched
that earlier in the show. I want Drake May to
rise up and be the young sensation in the AFC.
It's CJ Stroud. It should be got to win a
couple more playoff games, but he's doing fantastic and this
should be the year.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
I want it to be.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Well, we're talking about the offense, I'm gonna talk about
defense because that's a dog pound over there. You have
Will Anderson and doing it the Neil Hunter. They have
two really good interior d linemen that they can get pressure.
You got Henry Tolte and Elshaier, very athletic, very physical linebackers,
and that secondary is a dog pound itself.
Speaker 6 (21:50):
Just dogs. Stingley, Kaitlyn Bullock, CJ. Garner, Johnson, Kamari.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
Lasiter, all the different horns during the segment. Well done.
That was the Taxans bill.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
We're still working with you because now we have the
Miami Dolphins Sunday one PM. I dare you guys to
not take the entire sixty seconds on the relationship between
the quarterback and wide receiver, Kyle where.
Speaker 9 (22:10):
Do you go?
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Well, then that you want to call in a question
the relationship between the wide receiver and the head coach too.
There's weird media stuff going on, and maybe it's exaggerated and.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
It's August and when football starts, we'll see.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
But it doesn't seem like Tyreek Hill loves where he
is in life right now. It doesn't seem like he's
just bursting with joy to be there. Maybe when the
rubber hits the road, he'll start winning and balling. But
it's like it's not a team that you're really excited
about right now.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
I can't put it in their way.
Speaker 6 (22:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
If I'm excited about anything, it's the fact that the
Miami Dolphins reported to camp July twenty. Second, Tool Tunguovailo
didn't throw his first interception until August third. That's almost
two weeks into camp. So that's a good thing for
the Miami Dolphins. If you're thinking about that offense and
that team is all predicated out number one twelve, will
go just fight this year, Dolphins, just do that.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Why do you you this is a second time you've
done this about.
Speaker 8 (22:59):
The Dolphins, because I'm so I'm so over all this
all the like the dramatics with the Dolphins is like,
like all this stuff with them, Like I just as
a former player, man is like mo man, where is
too much like gold compete, go battle? Like It's just okay,
I'm over guys.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
I'm sorry, No, absolutely, Kyle.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
I Actually now at this point with the New Orleans Saints,
we had this exercise a couple of weeks ago where
you said to talk about the Saints and you were.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
Like, what is going on at quarterback? And it was fantastic.
Speaker 2 (23:28):
I actually dare you guys to only talk about the
Saints quarterbacks for the next sixty seconds Sunday, four pm Eastern.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
I'm just kidding. You don't have to do that, man,
though you have to go first, you can pick whatever time.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
Well, yeah, there's a lot of questions at the quarterback position.
There's a lot of questions everywhere. Tiring Matthew retires. But
I would say, if I'm talking about something that's positive,
it's a new coach, and I wish coach a very
successful year because that city will rally around you. I
do like they're all white helmets. I will say that
because the color rush with the black arms.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
I don't know who thought of that.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
I like the all white color rush, Thank Youlljah.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
He looked at me with panic when I said, talk
about the quarterback, but he will to you up on.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
The all white helmets.
Speaker 8 (24:04):
More. He's known for having an explosive offense. He's done
well in Dallas. He's done one to charges them all
with the Eagles. So I would tell one thing, Kelly Moore,
don't be shook.
Speaker 6 (24:12):
No pun intended pun, It was intended.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
Nice.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
I think it's funny that Manti knows the game from
top to bottom and his way to hype up the
Saints is to talk about they have white.
Speaker 4 (24:24):
Helmets, and that's not like at the end of like
an eight minute rant. That's only in twenty seconds at mantile.
I feel you, I feel you. They are a very
mysterious team.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
We don't really know what the identity is accept some
veterans on defense.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
It's strange.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Yeah, Kyle has a wonderful tactic when when you need
to buy and or waste time during that minute, bring
in one of your teammates, reference what they say, and
then you only have to talk about the team for
five seconds.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Well done, everybody.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Yeah, well, Jamie, we're still trying to make up some
time for Blackman's take on the Dolphins, so we were
still behind on that one.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
So everything.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
I'm still formally in my thoughts on that.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Maybe he'll carry the weight for the Packers here Saturday,
eightp eastern. Will one of your the team that drafted you?
What do you think about the Packers right now?
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Jordan Love, it is time, it is time.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
Let's go.
Speaker 6 (25:12):
We have been waiting.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
We've only had what two quarterbacks in the past, however,
is twenty years, So let's go. Jordan Love, like take
over the range. You see you got far from the
whole way. You got Aaron Rodgers, even going back to Barstow,
we have all these legends. It is time you have
an elite receiver, cord. I know they're young, but they
can get it done. You got a defense that's opportunis
to opportunistic in turnovers, making plays.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
Top ten in every category. Let's go. Jordan Love, stay.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Happy, go, Then let's go. Matthew gol then let's go.
I want to see this guy play. I want to
see the first play of this of the year for
the Packers, a nice, big, old play fake and just
chuck it deep to your fast new wide receiver like
a breath of fresh air. I want to see something new,
and I want it to be about him.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Manti.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
What do you think, Jordan, Matthew Golden, Josh Jacobs, let's go,
let's go. Let's run the ball. Okay, I know.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Jordan Love, he has an incredible arm. But let's feed
Josh Jacobs. Let's lay him do what he does, get
in the yards after contact. Let's let him set the
tone so that Jordan Love can do what he does.
Speaker 8 (26:12):
Yes, treat yourself.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
That was the Bill. Do you feel like we fulfilled?
Speaker 6 (26:19):
What Bill?
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Demanded and asked of you on social media. We got him,
we got bills.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
I didn't.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
I think. I think.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
I think we gave the people what they want. And
I'll have what the sound effects guy is having. Because
that person sounds like.
Speaker 4 (26:29):
They're on Mars.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
That means preseason is about to kick off eight games
live on NFL Network in week one.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
You know, with the shield on our breakfast table.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
We take a lot of pride in sometimes, you know,
the fact that the commissioner, Roger Goodell, oh, he's available,
he could come by, and we're like, that's great, we'll
have him. But then we have our friend that likes
to stop by the table, and we know that we
can ask this man anything, and that.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Is Jeff Biller, who is here.
Speaker 4 (26:59):
I know, it's my favorite thing. We love having you
here so early here.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Jeff, yes, well that's like racing. Just so the good
people of the league understand this man. You're the EVP
of Public Affairs and Policy, Player health and Safety Initiatives
for the NFL. So you come in and, as Kyle
likes to say, and I'm not sure you're gonna like this,
we can ask him anything.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Jeff can talk about anything, so let's go yep, exactly.
We got a lot. You know, we are a family.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
It's coast to coast in the NFL and international games
as well. But the thing is about football is that
when something happens to the league, to the game, we
all feel it.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
And it's been a really hard week and a half.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
A terrible event happened at the league offices last Monday
in New York City. How's everybody doing in the office
building back in New York after the shooting?
Speaker 4 (27:42):
Well, thank you for raising it.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
It's been I can't imagine a week like this in
my professional life. And I assume most of the others
of our colleagues across the NFL family, but most certainly
in New York. Most importantly, our colleague who is injured
is recovering, and everybody is optimistic there, which is most important.
But it was a really traumatic event and all of
(28:05):
our colleagues, the employees who work on Park Avenue are
dealing with it. And there's no there's no blueprint, right,
you know, everybody when you talk to your fellow employees,
are groups whoever we're checking in with. Some people seem
okay and that's great, and others not and sometimes trauma
affects people differently at a different times. So it is
(28:26):
a really tough environment for our family. And at the
same time, they're working right we put on the Hall
of Fame game. I'm sure we'll get to the announcement
from the other day shortly.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
The deal.
Speaker 9 (28:36):
Teams were working on this stuff and we've got a
season to come coming up in preseason games tonight, and
so the ability for our team to be resilient enough
to deal with their emotions and then work as professional
and impressively as they do. We all know it's it's
incredible to comprehend, but there are people at the bottom
of this game, and it's it's a really hard time.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Yeah, our thoughts and prayers are with our family over
there in New York. And you know, but you meant
some You mentioned that the game does continue and they
are a ready going back to work.
Speaker 6 (29:05):
We do have a preseason game tonight.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Can you please explain for the fears that changes to
the dynamic kickoff rule that they may see a little
bit of difference there.
Speaker 9 (29:14):
What we're doing is we're making it more dynamic what
oh okay, more dynamic kickoff.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Man, That's what we're doing.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Right.
Speaker 9 (29:24):
So if you remember going into last year before we
made the substantial change, everybody saw the difference. The reason
that we were doing that was one nobody was returning
the kick anymore. We were down to like one in
five kicks return. So it was a ceremonial playing two.
The world in which I live a lot of my
career is it had four times the rate of concussions
of a play from scrimmage, which is just crazy. The
spaces and the speeds involved. You guys get to such
(29:47):
velocities and so the contacts were really substantial.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
So the special teams coaches, over the course of a.
Speaker 9 (29:52):
Long period of time figured out better ways to do that,
to eliminate some of the space and therefore the speed.
Last year was the first time we saw it. The
return rate was about one in three, so much higher
than before, but a good start. We saw the injury
rate drop down to more or less win a runner
pass play is so we got that right, and I
think it allowed the coaches and the competition committee to say, okay,
(30:13):
let's take another step forward, and so as an incentive
to have more kicks return instead of the ball coming
out to the thirty on a touchback. We're going to
move to the thirty five, so a team has every
incentive to kick it in the landing zone as a
post in the end zone, because do you want to
give up that much yardage?
Speaker 6 (30:28):
Right?
Speaker 9 (30:28):
We saw points increase a little bit last year. We
saw drive starts and increase a little bit.
Speaker 6 (30:32):
Last year.
Speaker 9 (30:32):
We saw more touchdowns, more field goals, which is all great.
And if we can do a little bit more of
that and add an exciting play to the game because
the kickoff is then that's what the idea was here
behind the dynamic kickoffs.
Speaker 6 (30:42):
That's cool.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
I like that. I love it. Jeff.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Let's talk about something else dynamic, and the word is
hawk guy.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
I'm right here, hawk guy. It could be from Iowa.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
It could be an avenger, or it could be Sony's
technology with which to measure first downs.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
It's here, it's real. Tell us all about it. Now.
Speaker 9 (31:01):
The questions could you bring more drama to figuring out
out whether there's a first down? And that's what we're
attempting to do. So you know, we've had the change
for a thousand years and the chains are still going
to be there as a backup. But what this does
is this visual line to gain technology, which you're seeing
on the screen.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Now, the referee will still spot the ball.
Speaker 9 (31:20):
We'll still spot the ball, but then instead of the
chain's coming out, we'll be able to do it through
the optical tracking system to see whether or not you've
reached the line to gain. So you'll have that dramatic
moment where you see whether or not the ball gets
to the yellow line or it doesn't, and we'll still
have the change. There's a backup and we'll still have
the change there. So the so the coaches and the
players know, you know where the first down is. But
we'll see this for the first time. We saw it
(31:40):
in the preseason in the Hall of Fame game, and
we'll see it again tonight and throughout the rest of
the regular season.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
So how are we increasing the dramatics Because we talked
a ball on this show. There's there's a moment in
football that I'm going to miss where they drag out
that chain and as they put it down and you
realize that is short, the defense runs off.
Speaker 6 (31:58):
How are we gonna kind of intensify on already?
Speaker 4 (32:02):
We need fair enough.
Speaker 9 (32:04):
I think we need a bunch of creative minds to
get into the lab and figure this out. But you're
going to see the yellow line, you're going to see
the ball, and you're going to be watching you know,
if you watch the tennis match, if anybody the same
general idea got it, does it get there? Does it
not get there? How much did you get thereby That's
what we're going to be looking at.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
I like that.
Speaker 8 (32:21):
So players are very in particular about their helmet. I
for one, was a pain, Like I actually sat on
a practice in college because I had to switch to.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
A new model helmet and I did not want to.
Speaker 8 (32:32):
So I eventually gave in. I had to coach Tom O'Brien.
So how are they adapted into the newer and safer
the homeless.
Speaker 9 (32:39):
Iss true, Yeah, there, it's been a revolution in terms
of the technology and the safety that's coming with these helmets. Now.
Kyle and I have talked about this a bunch, and
we now have data from on field with the newer helmets.
So if you're wearing one of the best, best best
helmets that are out there, your likelihood of getting a
concussion is nearly thirty percent less than somebody who's wearing
an older helmet. That's a pretty good selling point too, right, yeah, right,
(33:02):
you're going to want and some of those helmets that
I'm talking about a made specifically for the position group.
You're not for corners yet, but for offensive linemen, for quarterbacks,
and so you can say to a player, if you
wear this as opposed to this, data shows that you're
going to be safer on field, which is fantastic because
all the technology that's gone into it, and all the
engineering that's gone into it, and all the years that
we've worked on it has led the companies to build
(33:23):
these products with more better things to come. The problem
is not a problem, but we're working closely with the
Players Association to say, help us educate players so they
make a choice that's really informed for themselves. And there's
a lot of players to your point, who are like, well,
I just change helmets a couple of years ago, I
feel good in this, or I really like this, and
we're saying, okay, just give it a breath, go do this. So,
as an example, helmets that used to be the best
(33:44):
helmets four or five years ago at the top of
our chart are now banned. That's how much helmets have
changed over the years. And that's asking a ton of
the players to be willing and open to trying something
new quickly. But the early returns for the season and
moving a lot of players with those best helmets is
that players are making those choices.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
I feel ancient. All my helmets are in my office
all bend.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
But you're kidding those Nope, nope, Jeff.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
Every time we talk helmets, one of those players that's
always been at the forefront of changing to the newest
helmets is George Kittle. He's out there, He's got a
modern helmet and it makes he makes it look cool
well as it so happens. George Kittle also became part
of the conversation about another issue live on our network
in training camp. Kittle at Niners Camp intervened and brought
(34:28):
up a subject that has made headlines that we'll talk about.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
But here's the clip our team at.
Speaker 10 (34:33):
A MIMO today that's smelling salts and ammonia packets were
made illegal in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
Wow, and I've been distraught all day.
Speaker 6 (34:39):
Illegal.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Yeah. He even said he's not practicing anymore.
Speaker 10 (34:42):
I considered retirement. Yeah, we got to figure out the
middle ground here, guys. Somebody helped me out. Somebody come
up with a good ideas. Yeah, that's all I had
to get out there. I'll get that off, okay, Jeff.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
So there is confusion that were reactions. Clean this up?
Speaker 1 (35:01):
What is the NFL stance on smelling salts and twenty
twenty five?
Speaker 9 (35:05):
First, I love the spontaneity of live television. That was
a great clip, so fantastic. The Food and Drug Administration
and our medical committee that deal with neurological issues came
out and said, hey, look, smelling salts can mask the
symptoms of a concussion. So if a player has been
hit and is and whether he wants to or maybe
(35:27):
it's happenstance take smelling salts, you may not be able
to tell whether or not he's actually hurt from a
concussive standpoint and diagnosis. So best practices are not to
allow the doctors or trainers to give smelling salts to
the players in those circumstances. Hence doctor Allen Sills, our
chief medical officer, sending that memo up. So that's where
we are. That's the state of the science. Kyle, your
(35:49):
history on smelling salts, if you want to share.
Speaker 6 (35:50):
It with all of us, I please do, yes, Je
get him jeh.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
Listen, in the nineties they were everywhere athletically, recreationally, all
these other things. There can be a whole Wikipedia page
about my personal history.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
But Jeff, I have a question for you on live TV.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
As someone who represents safety, do you think it's really
safe to have a job title that is that long?
Speaker 4 (36:13):
We can't even fit this on the bottom.
Speaker 6 (36:15):
Of the screen.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
What are we doing here?
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Is the worst EVP in public affairs, super califraed. I
look at some of the other execs Christine Dorfler CFO.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
Roger Goodell commissioner, Jeff Miller blah blah blah blah. What
are we doing here?
Speaker 9 (36:30):
Both better professionals and I will ever know, So let's
go with that.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Come up with something better.
Speaker 6 (36:35):
I don't really care what it is.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Well, we love you for the entire title.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
I'm supposed to wrap, but I just want to give
us thirty seconds quickly on the reason why you guys
are honestly.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
In town is the media deal that went down?
Speaker 2 (36:47):
And if you want thirty seconds to encapsulate what you
guys are feeling from your side of.
Speaker 9 (36:51):
The office, I think the biggest part here is that
our fans are going to get more football h on
more platforms.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
Than ever before.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
The TIPE with Disney the worldwide leader, and what it
can infuse into what we're doing both in digital for
the network as well as linear distribution of things like
red Zone is going to be heaven for NFL fans,
and that's always been the goal. How many fans can
we reach, how many fans can we offer our content
the best game in the world and all of your
coverage around it, And this.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
Is going to help in that regard.
Speaker 9 (37:19):
And so that's great strategically, and it's great for our
fans on the day to day.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
We as a collective in LA we're part of a
media yesterday where the intricacies were explained.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
To us a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
And I can echo what Jeff just said and how
you explained it, and you know what else, I will
echo your title once again. It is the NFL's executive
vice president of Public Affairs and Policy and player health
and safety Initiatives. Jeff, don't let them take it from you.
It's a very prideful point for you. It's it's just like,
keep Kyle Brant in.
Speaker 6 (37:43):
The box up there. Yeah, that's smart.
