Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Welcome to Good Morning Football, presented by Old Trapper. That's right, GMFB.
Everybody on a Thursday, Jamie Mansei, Mike g and Kyle
listen this time last week on Wednesday, I said it
was Thursday. Then on Thursday, I think I forgot to
say call on Barkley's name on the air. It was
not a good look for me. It was not a
great week. I feel rejuvenated this week.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
I had a day off.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I've had a lot of coffee today And it might
be because this Thursday night game feels different. It's hits different,
as the kids would say, because the quarterbacks are old,
as are we, and it feels like we're just all
amongst brethren, you know, football are football fan. So it's
time for Throwdown Thursday. It is indeed Thursday. We have
three topics to talk about, so let's get to it,
shall We even kicks off tonight with a forty one
(01:06):
year old Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers traveling to
Cincinnati to take on forty year old Joe Flacco and
the Cincinnati Bengals. We check in on Rodgers about this matchup.
You're gonna hear from his teammate Cam Hayward off camera,
who then calls it the icy Hot Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Woo I hot Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
I love it, Aaron. What do you think about maybe
quarterbacks going against each other?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
That's great. I mean, I've known Joe for a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
He's been great coming to my charity event, He's been
a great ambassador for the league.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
He's had a great career, and it's fun that we're
both still a plan.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
At the top of my head. I don't know how
old Cam Hayward is, but I feel like he can't
be thrown around names like icy Hot Bowl. Cam, You're
not some spring chicken either. All right, throw it down Thursday.
Here's the question which makes for a more captivating story tonight.
Is it Aaron Rodgers getting the Steelers to Super Bowl
sixty and this will be one step one win in
the column on our way to that, Or would it
(02:08):
be Joe Flacco arriving in Cincinnati and getting the Bengals
to the return of Joe Burrow and to a playoff
Berth Mansai.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
I got to go with old Aaron Rodgers taking the
Steelers to the super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Guys.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
The last time the Pittsburgh Steelers was in the Super Bowl,
they lost to then Aaron Rodgers, who was with the
Green Bay Packers. And what a story that would be
for somebody like Aaron Rodgers to go into a situation
where he's probably in his one two years left his
in his career, a prolific career, historic career, and to
end it with the team that he beat in his
(02:42):
first super Bowl win. I think that him being able
to take this team, him to be able to do
it and possibly his last year in the NFL, I
think that would be the most the more compelling story
for me to watch and most captivating for all of us.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
I mean, it's.
Speaker 6 (02:56):
Twenty eleven we're talking about. Was the last time that
Aaron Rodgers was in the Super Bowl? February sixth, twenty eleven.
Grenade Bruno Mars the number one song back then. I
remember what I guessed.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I never thought that was a number one song.
Speaker 6 (03:06):
So yeah, that's the more captivating story. I mean, getting
to the playoffs is nice. And Joe Flacco having been
benched twice in two years and then taking a team
to the playoffs, great story.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Love it.
Speaker 6 (03:16):
Super Bowl that's why we do what we do. Aaron
Rodgers getting back there for the first time in fifteen years.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
It'll be fifteen years.
Speaker 6 (03:23):
By the time we get to that part.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
That is a phenomenal story.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
And this team starting to feel, this team a little
bit right, and whoever plays them feels and they're a
physical team.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
They're what the Steelers want to be. And then he
add Rogers to the mix. Interesting to see where this goes. Listen,
the Flacco thing. This is a two and four team
that has all kinds of problems.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
He just gets traded in division. It's very strange, and yet.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
I feel like I have to go with the Rogers
just because I'll speak for all of us, Like, if
Flacco does this, I won't even be that surprised. Like
we saw him take Cleveland to the playoffs. I'm kind
of almost expecting Flacco to do something special. The Rogers
thing has fifty different layers. I'll start with one. Aaron
Rodgers last year was cut by the Jets. The cut
by the zero to five Jets. You're like, now we're
(04:09):
going to our owing six Jets, whatever the hell they
are right now. I can't even keep track. He was
cut They're like, we're out of here. Aaron Rodgers has
this thing staring him in the face of a The
Steelers never win a playoff game these days. The Steelers
haven't been to a playoff game been to a Super
Bowl since I think Rogers beat him in one. Rogers
also always loses in the playoffs himself, Like that's that's
(04:30):
his legacy. Now, the best thing going for him is
if he does take the Steelers to the playoffs, he
won't have.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
To play the Niners because if he did, he would.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Lose like he usually does. So the Steelers going to
the super Bowl means something extremely special other than the
other thirty one teams. Rogers going back to the super
Bowl would be an all time, all time ending Blacko
would be fun, it'd be novel. I think the answer
here is Rogers for the clean sweep.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
All right.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Usually that's not a compelling way to do this segment. However,
when it's Rogers and a Super Bowl talk, it feels
like it's fitting. Moving on throat on Thursday, there are
five games between teams this weekend that are five hundred
or better. Parody in the league is on fire.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
The best matchup of.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
This group arguably takes place on Monday night in Detroit.
The Lions are coming off a tough loss to the Chiefs,
and Dan Campbell now knows that his defense really has
to prepare with what they're going to have their hands
full in one Baker Mayfield guys.
Speaker 7 (05:24):
No, I've got a lot of respect for Baker Mayfield,
the way he plays, his leadership, his ability to push
the ball down the field, make plays with his legs.
You know, I just think he's playing at a high level.
You know, he's a guy that gives them a chance
anytime they're in a game. They play really good defense.
This is a good team. It's a really good team.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
The Lions have great marketing. I just love that salty
shirt he's got going on. It's perfect those two facing
off Monday night, Lions Bucks. You can only make it
to one press conference, though, you know, it's tough being
a part of the working media. MANSI which one of
these will you be making sure that you get to
press conference version, Baker Mayfield or Dan Campbell?
Speaker 5 (06:03):
Well, right off, rip, I would want to go with Baker.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
However, given this game Lions.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Versus the Bucks, what the Bucks have going into this game, Baker.
We don't know who he's going to be able to
throw the ball to. I don't think that the Lions
are gonna make it any easier for them. So I
would love to see Dan Campbell in the postgame press er.
Why because if the Buccaneers do beat the Lions, I
want to see what Dan Campbell has to say. But
(06:30):
if the Lions beat the Buccaneers, I want him to
talk about Baker, and I already know Dan Campbell, being
who he is, he's going to talk about Baker. Gave
give him a lot of praise because we know that
Baker's going to have to do a lot of things
in this game to help his team win. I want
to see what Dan Campbell has to say. We saw
what he had to get what he said last week
after a fight at the end of the game, and
say this is not our standards.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Know what we do, just not what we stand for.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Everything that Dan Campbell says not only inspires me, but
he also gives credit to his opponents a lot of
the time. So if I had to choose between these
two guys, it would be Dan Campbell after this game.
Speaker 6 (07:03):
I'm calling it now ahead of the game, which means
I don't know who's winning or losing. So I'm gonna
go Baker Mayfield because Dan Campbell's press conference I feel
like are better during the week leading up to the game,
whereas Baker Mayfield post game. You never know what you're
gonna get, win or lose. Woke up feeling dangerous. It
was a press conference and then this one right here,
which I forgot to check to see make sure.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
We have it. I think we have the image of Baker. Yes,
this was after a loss. Right here, you get a
little of this.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
The still shot is great because that's the one that
really went viral, so it looks like one of the
wet bandits for sticky bandits. Yeah right, you never know
we're gonna get Baker post game.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
I'm going Baker Brown's Baker era is fascinating. It's so fad.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
There will be.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
A documentary on it sometime. I was ready when Jamie
first seed up the question to go with this guy,
to go with Baker, and then we rolled the clip
of Dan Campbell. I just still can't get enough. I
love it so much. My answer is Dan Campbell. Campbell
has reached the point when he speaks where he almost
has this quality like Chrisopher Walking or Arnold Schwarzenegger, or
(08:09):
like Boroc where like he's doing an impression of himself
doing an impression. He's just one of those voices that
you immediately hear and resonate, even when he's just talking
about normal things. I love his physicality at the lectern.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
He always looks so much bigger than it. He always
looks so muscular.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
The voice is so entertaining that the quotes are so compelling,
and they're showing new layers. As I've said, it's not
just all about ride the Lightning. It's after last week
when the fight happened. Afterwards, I thought he was really
eloquent and insightful about that's not.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
What we're about.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
So he's showing us new layers. This is a very
good question because I can go either way, but I
just can't quit.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
I can't quit Dan Campbell.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
It's that heavy metal song I just keep playing over
and over because it rocks so hard.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
You don't think you're getting out of here without doing
the impression of Dan Campbell at the postgame podium.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
It's just an entry It's just an entry level Jame
Gum Buffalo Bill impression.
Speaker 7 (08:56):
Oh wait, was she a great big person like that?
Speaker 1 (08:59):
It's just that it's the best one I got and
it is fun to do. But you gotta go way
do down here, man, you got to stand him.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Not as big as him. I'm not as well. I
don't have the hair.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
It's down here, man, Jamie, what have we got? The
third question has been a good third on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
You also engage your traps every time, Dan Campbell, you know, it's.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Trying to make them bigger. And that impression trying to.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Make them bigger was like ko, it was perfect.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Well on everybody, all right, We've got two quarterbacks playing
in their forties. I think I'm done saying that. I
think enough times.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Which decade would you rather relive? We're not going to
talk about your forties right now. Would you rather relive
your twenties, man, Tai.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Or your thirties? What a question?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
I immediately regret asking years old, twenty four. She's not
even halfway through.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
So I'm not even halfway through my thirties.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
You can reject what it might be. Let's talk about
my twenties. Okay, let's talk about my twenties.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
I think I lived one hundred different lives in my twenties.
You talk about going from highs to the mids, to
lows and back up. I go to Notre Game, one
of the most prestigious colleges in all of the world,
and I have a prestigious call, a really good career there.
My last year was able to help my team get
us to the national championship, a Heisman finalist.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
So at top of the top.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
And then the cat fishing stuff comes up after that,
and so from what was so high, now we're low
and we're trying to battle that. And then I get drafted,
thank goodness, get drafted to the then San Diego Chargers.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
A dream come true.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
I struggle for my first three years there, start to
get my stride a little bit. In my contract year, Philly,
really really good guys. I'm averaging over ten tackles in
the first two games of the season. Third game comes along,
We're in Indianapolis and I popped my achilles, and I.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Think we have to play right here.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Do you want to relive your go down?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Oh no, look at you.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
This is the second that's the third game in my
contract year. I go to plant my left and my
achilles pops and I'm down. It was you talk about
a roller coaster.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
This is my.
Speaker 5 (11:11):
Twenties, right.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Let me guess, Mantai, you're gonna tell us that you're
gonna want to do it again, because.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
It's how you just hold on, jam hold on, hold on.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
So after this, I signed with the Saints, have a
great career with the Saints. I finished my career in Chicago.
Everything is great. But in my thirties, I get married
to my wife. Yeah, I have two beautiful children. And
so if I had to go, there's my gang right there.
If I had to hamble between my twenties and my thirties,
(11:39):
there's no greater love than I have for those human
beings in that picture, Like, no greater passion.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
And then I get this job.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
Guys, outlive my thirties every single day, you know, over
and over on repeat. So to answer the question, I
had a great twenties, A lot of lessons learned in
my twenties. But my thirties, guys, we're just getting started.
I gotta go my thirties.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
I Oh, God's day, do I follow that?
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Look like?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, give him one for me. Yeah, big squeeze, the
big squeeze.
Speaker 6 (12:12):
But it does raise First of it is the greatest
question in the history of Good Morning for pall here,
because there's.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
So many talk about layers.
Speaker 6 (12:18):
Can we change what we did or we've got to
do it by the book. And you may say you
your twenties and like dudes out there giving high fives, like, yeah,
I get to be single again. But then, like I
thought about last week, Kyle, you brought up Mister Destiny,
the movie where he's then Jim Blush's going to recurt
the wife that he already had in the first place.
(12:38):
He's like, no, No, that's the true love of my life.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
I got to go back.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I feel like it would kind of be that way because.
Speaker 6 (12:42):
I met my wife in my twenties. I would probably
relive the twenties. I'd make some tweaks.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Here and there.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
I don't know if again i'm bending the question, but
that's probably what I would do.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Give me a little more taste, why white twenties?
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Just more fun out there? No, No, not more fun.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
As matter of fact, I probably I would have more fun.
I think I was too busy working.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I was.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
I was too focused on the professional stick kit, which
got me here.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
What's up, dude, happy to be next yeact.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
To see you, So I'd probably make it look I
probably would have a little.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Bit more fun in my twenties.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
I like to hear that, and I think this, it's
just so funny that Manti Teo, in his very Manti way,
gives this very thoughtful and cerebral reflection back on the
lessons that he learned and the hardships that he endured.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
And then there's me.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
You want to see picture of me in my twenties, Manti,
I answer, I answer you with this, go ahead, bring
it out.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Yeah, buddy, I mean, what was that saying?
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Affliction affliction? Yeah, So I just put that in there
as a palate cleanser after a Manti's beautiful meal. I'm
just giving you like a four loco basically like that
was an all time tough era for me. Here's what
I would say now, I think we've had enough of
the picture bracelet, Yeah, the leather bridge, ye, the shirt.
I wouldn't don't leave home without the leather bracelet, would
(13:53):
not leave home without it. I just I would say
that I think it's a very cool thing tonight that
these two guys over forty are playing each other and
on this national stage. And I like Joe flaccowinneron Rogers
because they have a character ristic which I find very
attractive in people who are getting to middle agent that
they are very secure with it.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
It has never been cooler.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
For someone to be okay with how old they are
mentally physically across the board. I think it's an awesome,
awesome quality and they're completely secure, and you don't see
that much anymore now. As for the question twenties or thirties,
my answer would undoubtedly be I'd rather relive my twenties,
but not to do more beer funnels and ice loses
and Vegas trips. It would just be do try things,
(14:32):
experiment even more than I did, and I had a
wild set of twenties. I look at young people right
now and I know several of them, I have them
in my family. I think they are bound by grind culture.
I think they're terrified of AI. They got all these
difficult things. I just would look at them and I'm like,
believe me, young people, you have the one thing that
the richest people in the world do not have and
would spend any amount of money to have.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Time.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
You have time, please use it, make bold choices, make
crazy choices. Right now in your life, most likely you
do not have a spouse, a kids, a mortgage, elderly parents.
In ten years you may have all those things, and
many of them are wonderful, but they're not exactly good
for chasing your dreams and taking risks and eskewing convention.
(15:15):
So if you're watching this right now and you're twenty nine,
you're twenty two, you're twenty, please don't be stressed.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
About I need to do this in this or my
life's not going to work out.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Make crazy choices, make irresponsible choices. Just do it, because
twenties are the pre party of life.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Who cares you're not even at the party yet. Take
a swing out of your shoes.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Maybe it's in the fair way, maybe it's in the water,
but at least you swung.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
In the spirit of having as many Well done, Kyle,
well done. Everybody actually in the studio was slapping as
you were going, we're beginning to clap. Have as many
line items as you can on your LinkedIn, I think,
is what Kyle's saying, Like, do all the things, try
all the experiences, and also like you know a couple
of line items that don't belong on the professional resume
as well. Try that out for size. Well done, everybody, Congratulations, Damy.
Speaker 6 (15:57):
Can I wrap this into a nice little bow? I
got bout debating this with the producer a producer bill
before the show, and he's like, you got to really
lived the part of your life where your kids were born,
otherwise you're a terrible person.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
Well, I picked my twenties. My kids were born. Well,
one kid was born in the thirties.
Speaker 6 (16:11):
As Manti is going through it, he's in my ear.
He goes see Manti, good dude, person, Mike and I
are heenens.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Mike.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
I'll back you up as she who has delivered the
three children. I would do my twenties again, even though
they all came in my thirties, like, because so much
of the thirties becomes about them, about other people in
your life, and that's okay. There's a time and a
place for that, and there's no part of me in
my twenties that I should have been having children responsible
for other people and people.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Relying on me.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
So I would relate the twenties, relive the twenties, just
to have that experience again. Because you're allowed to be selfish,
self centered at times, self focused, and then when you
have your kids you can go on and make your
life about them the way Manti so eloquently did. Before
we get back to rap sheet, can I see the
leather bracelet one more time? Just because I like to
make Kyle squirm, you know, I like to see just
Affliction there, thank you. That's so ready. They knew I
(17:05):
was going to ask for it again. Gosh, Kyle, So
that guy is just know.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
That's that, Jamie.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
That isn't something in LA called a gift boutique where
if you're on some list you get a bracelet on
my right hack wearing it, you're just I'm holding it
up because the people I went you go to tent
to tent and they're like, hey, are you sort of
famous or very famous? Here, I'll give you some free stuff.
I remember I was standing next to Shannon Elizabeth was
there from American Pie, Nicole Egert was there from Charles
(17:31):
in Charge, and then Kyle Brand from Days of Her
Life Who Gives a Crap? And I got a free
Affliction shirt and I thought, I want to lottery.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
You probably got free sunglasses too. That's holding your great
hairline back as well. I see those man, It's perfect
on everybody, rap sheet. If you would like to participate
in this question, you may otherwise what are the forty
nine ers planning with their quarterback this week?
Speaker 4 (17:53):
I'll participate very quickly because I don't have as much
to say as you guys very eloquently did. My kids
were born when I was in my thirties. I love
them dearly. They're a great kids. Twenties is where it's at.
I was living in Mississippi once I moved out of
my parents' house. Those twenties were not as well. Living
in Mississippi in Starfield College Town, living in Tuscalusa College Town.
(18:17):
I had a girlfriend that I just met who was
so fun and awesome, and we partied a lot, and
I worked NonStop, but we still partied a lot, and
I had no responsibilities except for my job and to
hang out with this girl who's awesome, and I wasn't
on Twitter NonStop.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Is it your wife now? Hopefully? Okay?
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I married her?
Speaker 4 (18:39):
Ben Wow, I thought she was my girlfriend back then.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Rap sheet, rat sheet, We just yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Rap sheet just pause for like thoughts from the table
or commentary about a man who's in his twenties living back.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
In the college town.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
I just want to ask anybody else if that popped
up on their radar, Like sometimes that can get like
a little like, what's he doing here? He's young, but
he's not at the college. As I go to the
college like starkfille Tusklosa rap sheets in his twenties, you're
starting to make it as a football writer. But like
that one hit the radar. Puney a little bit, got
some money.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Yeah, well, I was just cruising by high school.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
I didn't do that at all.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
People knew who I was in the college town, and
I didn't have any money when I was in Mississippi.
But in Alabama I made fifty five thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
I am rich.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
I was rich, that was, but then I had my girlfriend,
so there wasn't any intermingling.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Dollar beers hit different fifty five k you know, go ahead, wrapt.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
So anyway, Team twenties. I do love my kids though.
All right, let's talk about the San Francisco forty nine
ers and their quarterback situation. Speaking of players in their twenties,
I guess Rock Purty was back at practice.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Of the forty nine ers, coming.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
Back from that turf toe injury, described by Kyle Shanahan
as not limited but very limited, more limited than mac Jones.
He was also in practice deal within a injury dealing
with knee injury. Seems to me to put mac Jones
in as the starting quarterback once again. They do not
want brock Purty to suffer another relapse, another injury, another reaggravations.
(20:15):
Certainly seems like mac Jones once again. George Kittle also.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Back at practice.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
He has been designated to return off i AR deal
with that hamstring injury. If all goes well, he could
play this week, and what an absolute boost that would
be for the San Francisco forty nine is one of
the best tight ends in the NFL. For the Dallas Cowboys,
Cede Lamb, their star receiver, was also back to practice.
Remember he is dealing with a high ankle sprain from
(20:41):
that hip drop tackle right there.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
We'll see you if he's able to play this week.
The describe him.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
As being very involved in the walkthrough and about to
play your rival. So you wonder how much gamesmanship is there.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
But at least Seede was.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Back at practice and has a chance. And then for
the Rams, poop and Nakou, who's dealing with a.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Low ankle sprain.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Our understanding, this is something I reported with Mike, is
that he is more like doubtful for this week than
anything else.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
Was not at practice yesterday.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
It's generally seems like a strong possibility that the Rams
won't have him this week as to buy after that,
so we can heal up and be ready for after
the buye.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Top ten all time great movie characters. Captain Jack Sparrow
once said me, I'm a dishonest man. You can always
trust a dishonest man to be dishonest. Jack Sparrow's character
was quirky and eccentric, but he was playing a character.
But what's happening in Tampa Bay right now is as
close to the truth as.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
You can get.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
A franchise that has been rejuvenated again by the play
of a larger than life quarterback.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
But this is not.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Main character energy anymore. This is about the man who
stands behind the captain of the ship and whispers directions
in his ear.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
This way the wind is blowing.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
This is how you run the offense. Here's Baker with
the birder on his shoulder, and this is Josh Brizard
a thirty five years of age. Josh Bazzard is the
youngest offensive play caller in the NFL this season. The
average age of OC's this year's forty five.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
He's thirty five. He took over in.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
February after Liam Cohen took off from Tampa, headed northup
seventy five bank Or Wright and became the head coach
in Jacksonville. Cohen only had the OC job in Tampa
for a year after Dave Kanalis went to take the
head coaching job for the Panthers. He called plays in
twenty twenty three, twenty twenty four, and now we're in
twenty twenty five. Someone who abandons their cannon on a
(22:36):
pirate ship, you gotta be able to step right up
at a moment's notice and execute Q.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Josh Grizzard.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
This guy is brilliant, and not just wonder lick football kid,
whiz kid. Brilliant brilliant like graduated as a high school
victorian with a four to six' THREE, gpa a four
time class, president who lettered five times in football and,
hoops and all of this done in the town that
got its first stop light in nineteen ninety. Seven Lizard,
Lick North. CAROLINA i honestly can't same that name.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Enough and IF i.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
May fully Judge Lizard, Lick North carolina by its, cover
BECAUSE i know you're already doing, it you have to
imagine the culture shock to go From Lizard lick To New, Haven.
Connecticut When brizard enrolled At yale to play football and
to continue being, smart he, plays he, graduates he stays
in town At yale to get into, coaching but then
at twenty twenty, Three, brizard still working the college, ranks
(23:28):
gets A ga quality control job In, Durham North, carolina
just fifty miles From Lizard. Lick for three, Years brizard
hung around the, offense where he worked with the only
quarterback drafted in the first round out Of duke since
nineteen sixty, Seven Daniel. Jones in twenty, seventeen after working
At duke With, Jones brizard takes his next step in
(23:50):
quality controlling job In South, beach where he actually worked
across two coaching regimes instead of fully clearing. House in
twenty twenty, Two mike, McDaniel a Fellow yale alump where
Tames brizard's pass game brainiac, services but this only lasted
two ACADEMIC nay football. Seasons in twenty twenty, Three Liam
(24:12):
cohen is now hired AS oc In tampa and he
Takes Josh bazzard away From miami and gives him the
passing game coordinator, job working closely Alongside Baker. Mayfield in,
Fact cohen Trusted grizzard so much that in his first,
Season Josh brazzard is in charge of third down play,
calls and last year with that on his, plate The
buccaneers led THE nfl with a fifty one percent conversion
(24:34):
rate on third. Down so On february, first twenty twenty,
Five Liam cohen goes To jacksonville And Todd bowles has
decision to, make and when he, does he says this
About Josh. Grizzard after interviewing several candidates outside the, building
it ultimately became clear to me that our best option
was here In Tampa. Bay that's from the head. Coach
(24:55):
sounds like a no brainer to. ME a month, later
at the, Combine cohen is asked About grizzard taking over
as The BUCKS oc and he, Says josh is up
there in terms OF i you and football. Knowledge the
ability to see, it to design, it and be able
to communicate it to the. Guys you, know he's primed for.
This cohen sens, It bowles knew, it and Now baker
(25:16):
is feeling.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
It so it shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Matter now That baker is the first starting quarterback ever
to have eight different offensive coordinators in his first eight
seasons as a starting, QUOTE. Qb that's the life of a.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Pirate you fight in the sea of.

james great, Job, jane great, Job, buccaneers great, Job Josh
guzzard going through the ranks understanding what it takes to
get this thing. Happened now he's reaping all the benefits of.
It everything's meant to be so great, Job, Jane thank.
Speaker 6 (26:00):
YOU a couple of years, Ago tad both had an
offensive coordinator position opening and couldn't get some people to
take the, job let alone some interviews because they, said,
well he's A Lane duck head.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Coach.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
Wrong and now a couple of coordinator openings, later they're
beating down his. Door they, want, hey, look everybody's becoming
an offensive counter becoming a head coach for Todd. Balls
after it Was canalis And Liam. Cohen now you Got Josh,
grizzard a guy that they felt, confident and they, said
everybody in the outside that was trying to beat down that,
door we got our next guy in house right, Here
Josh Grizzard Jamie two.
Speaker 1 (26:33):

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Back i'm coming, football.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
All.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
Right this is the best you can take your.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Pick Walter, Payton Kobe, Bryant Brett, favre the Nineties Cowboys
our next guest has written about all of, them and
he's written. Prolifically and guess who's writing about, now take
a look at. This he is writing About Tupac. Shakou
that's the book Only god can judge me By Jeff.
Pearlman will he be judged by this? BOOK i hope,
(28:12):
so because it's amazing as. Always an old, friend an incredible.
Writer Jeff perlman and studio here In New, york say what's?
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Up? Jeff do you get tired of having guests come
here talking About? Tupac, second a little old for.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
You to do it every single every. Day it never gets.
Old that's why we have you. Here it brings us
to the first. Question SO i, start Sweetness kobe far.
Speaker 7 (28:32):
Of all That?
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Tupac, yeah why the zag? Right two? Things number, one
this is going to sound. Weird my mother in law
is Named Laura cole and she Loves tupac and for
years she's been, like you should do this, BOOK i
swear To. God so lives In. Florida she's a huge
hip hop. Fan there's, like do A tupac. Book number.
TWO i Love tupac AND i always wanted to write the. Book,
yeah it's a BOOK i always wanted to, write And
(28:54):
i've done, sports done, sports don. SPORTS i just want
to break out of my cell a little bit and
try something.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Different when is The Laura cole book coming?
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Out?
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Yeah, yeah that's, next that's.
Speaker 6 (29:03):
Next awesome when you, START i, mean you'd written a
lot about, sports so it's sort of you have that
structure and that roll of. DEX i guess you could
say this had to be a whole new, World like
how do you dive into that and, Say, okay we've
got to build this up from the.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Ground that's hard and it's. Interesting the thing you have
with athletes when you're writing, books that's an underrated. Thing
you have a schedule where they. Were SO i Write
Bo jackson from this year to this, YEAR i know
everywhere he was for eighty percent of the. Year same With,
far same with all these People. Tubac except for, touring
you don't. Know so it's a lot of finding old
high school, yearbooks elementary school year, books going through liner
(29:39):
notes of, albums and just, calling, calling, calling and trying
to recreate where he, was what he was. Doing it was,
daunting this this incredibly morbid.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Question there's so many amazing things about his. Life but
a lot of people who know About tupac know about.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
The end of his life and have questions about.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
It so in doing the research the way that only
you do, it what is something that you? Learned or
maybe they were surprised about the death Of tubac.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
All, right and there are people who disagree with me
on this About. DIEHEART i think what's surprise thing is
how all the conspiracy theories to me fall totally. Flat,
basically it's A Mike Tyson bruce seldom Fight tyson's At
this fight's a, terrible terrible. Fight tyson kills. Him after the.
Game after the fight is, Over tubac is in the
lobby of THE Mgm grant and he's with a bunch
(30:21):
of guys From Death Row, record Sug knight's label that
he's signed, to and they see a Guy Orlando, anderson
who is A compton, crip and a guy next To
tupac is With tupac, says that's a guy who stole
my chain because there have been an altercation in a mall.
Recently this guy was wearing a Medallion Orlando anderson ripped it.
Off two busy which guy he goes that guy right over,
there and this, Guy Orlando, anderson who was affiliated with
The Compton, Crips tupac walks up to, him says hey
(30:44):
you and punches. Him all The Death row guys. Pounce later,
On Orlando anderson is they're driving around looking for a two.
Buck they go To Shook clubby's not there and they
See tupac leaning out of Sug knight's car kind of
hollering at women as they walk. By Orlando anderson is like,
that that's, him That's. Tupac AND i interviewed one Of
(31:05):
Orlando anderson's best friends and he said something that has
actually stuck with. Me he's, Like Orlando anderson could not
go back To compton and just be LIKE i got
my ass kick by a, Rapper LIKE i got my
ass by a, rapper like the embarrassment of. That couldn't do.
It SO i just think it's more straightforward than people.
Think that's. Incredible any, RESENT i, mean any. Resistance you're
(31:27):
starting to ask questions. About you, know.
Speaker 6 (31:29):
It's not a football, game it's not a sport that
you're asking that's a murder that you're asking. About did
you ever get so far into This you're going.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Like oh, yeah, YEAH i mean it. WAS i found
the first police. OFFICER i interviewed the first police officer
who got to the. SCENE i interviewed the coroner, afterwards
LIKE i interviewed his family members who were in the
hospital with. Him and the closer you get to something
like people like the sexy myth, right especially with Young
Young Death Marilyn, Monroe Jam, steve and they love the.
(31:58):
Mythology but the closer you get and the people who know,
best they sort of break it down and they're actually
exhausted by it all because they've heard it over and
over and over. Again AND i just think the truth
of the matter is he punched the wrong. Guy he
was the wrong guy to do. It it was crazy
that Death row let him do. It he had all
these guys who are experienced gang, bangers experienced security let
(32:19):
him just walk up and punch this guy and it
ended his.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Life this is a, tiny tiny half of a percent
of what is in This it is page after page
of stuff like this that is completely.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
Ribbon in the.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
One subject that you definitely have not written on that
somebody needs To, jeff what is the book on The
New york?
Speaker 3 (32:38):

You how many volumes is?
Speaker 3 (32:45):
It you're an?
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Author how would you even approach a project like?
Speaker 3 (32:48):
That? FIRST i would take this mug and slam it
into my head as hard as. Possible, okay just the
futility and the STUDENT i honestly got this. Year Go
on is the. Word i've been A jeff fan my Whole,
yeah only TEAM i care. About i've been, through, obviously
the butt. Fumble i've been Through Aaron rodgers and The.
Achilles i've been through a. J dewey five, intercept three.
Interceptions i've been through not Drafting Warren sapp and Drafting Kyle.
(33:10):
Brady i've been through not Drafting, marino Drafting ken, O'Brien
on and on and. On this is the worst Year
i've ever seen in my.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Life, Wow i'm not. KIDDING i can't even. Fathom when
is it about? It can you put a fing around
with the record is? Bad, obviously but Anything.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Yeah there's no hope. Whatsoever and they're going to get
the first pick of the draft and there's not even
a marquee quarterback to day and make it even worse
in the same city and. Stadium, oh the other team
found a franchise. Quarterback it looks like has an exciting
young running back and. Roll oh and this is On.
Tupac this is when this is when The patriots are
(33:46):
supposed to be down and The jets were supposed to Be,
no we skip that one. Altogether that was a year
like it's just my, NUMBINGLY i don't know what happened
and start writing the.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
Book it's got to be like six, body, wait all
the things you just said as the, BOOK i just want.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
To say one. Thing i'm, Curious i'm I'M i THINK
i was five years. Old my brother was Seven, Mayopak New.
York my brother at the table, Says i'm going to
root for The, giants AND i, say, Okay i'm going
to root for The. Jets my brother would not recognize
That Eli manning if he came up to him and,
SAID i Am Eli. Manner and that is what has
caused me to be A jet. Fan my, Brother David,
pearlman has caused me to be A jet fan and
(34:18):
ruined my. Life Only god can judge The. Jets, yeah,
yeah he is judging The.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
Jets Joe flacco once played for The, jets now going

runner we had Former Lion Jeff, kamla all starting quarterbacks
in THE. Nfl, Yeah delaware one of four schools to
(34:58):

tonight On, amazon which is geared towards young, people the
two quarterbacks are both over. Forty It's flacco and It's.
Speaker 3 (35:14):

YEAH i love. It, YEAH i just think it's, great
AND i think it's. CRAZY i think it's crazy That
Joe flacco's stow is starting quarterback in THE. Nfl but

Speaker 3 (35:33):
It i'm not a Huge rogers.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Guy that is such a loaded comment based on years
and years of books and relationships and, research that is
not just the. Throwaway so to that, point let's do
A jeff proman superlative greatest hits. Question all of the
books you've, written in all of these figures that we've
mentioned throughout this, interview who do you, think Including, tupac
who do you think is the most interesting subject you've
ever researched and written.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
About i'm not just saying this because the book's coming.
Out It's tuo Boc by tell us, why because there
was a, GUY i think where people don't understand About
tupac as he grew up an absolutely abject Poverty baltimore
row house, rats running up and down the base Sports Marin.
City his mom is addicted to, crack and he is
basically kicked out of the house and living with. Friends, poverty, poverty, trauma,
(36:15):
trauma trauma across the. Board had his first sexual experience
at fourteen years old with a, cousin his second and
fifteen with a friend of his. Mother like everything about
his life was traumatic and people look at him and
they see thug life and they SEE i get. Around
but what he overcame is unlike anything Anything i've ever
written about in my, life and you've written about it at.
(36:37):
All i've written about many. People let me follow.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
That your books are loaded with, details, anecdotes. STORIES i
mean some of the things, NOW a lot of the
things in The cowboys documentary we first learned about in
your book about The cowboys years.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Ago i'm sure that's fun for. You what is?
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Not i've got what is the single most interesting little
tidbit story or anecdote that you have ever are craziest
and take it anywhere you, Want, jeff you know What i'm.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Looking, for all, Right i'm going to Go ACTUALLY usfl And.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Jeff loves THE fsifl wrote a whole book About it's incredibly.
Speaker 3 (37:07):
Thorough He Spring Football League. Nites, YES i just what
was the STORY i was thinking about. This you gave
me your heads up on this. One, yeah, okay they
had The San antonio Gun slingers or this dysfunctionnow. Franchise
you need to look up their. Helmets they're Like woody
From Toy. Story. Yeah and they signed a defensive lineman
Named Greg. Fields And Greg fields was a kid out
Of grambling played with The colts for a brief period of,
(37:28):
time was about to be cut by The Atlanta. Falcons
would not leave the hotel. Room they had to bring
a police officer to get him to. Leave after he
was he refused. Leave he joins the Gun, slingers and
the owner of the Gun slinger stops paying. Players he
just stops Paying Greg, fields And greg told me a.
Story follows him home to his mansion In, texas pulls
a baseball bat and out of his trunk of his.
(37:50):
Car Clinton mangus sees in the owner and, Says, greg
what are you doing? Here he's, Like i'm here to get.
Paid mangas, says wait here one, second goes into the,
house comes back out with a paper bag stuff WITH
i think it was eighty thousand, dollars and he, says
are we? Good And fields, goes we're, good and your guys,
Off she'll come at baseball back. Point it was a
(38:12):
Very tupac moment For greg. Few you know what it
all seems to come, back.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Guys Only god can judge, Me jeff tell them quickly
to where they can get it and how and all
that great.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
