Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio GMFB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Tuesday, June third, Isaiah standback, Jamieard all here in Los Angeles,
Kyle Bran, John Robinson and New York Kyle Brant your
quick thoughts on the Techmobile shirt that you're looking at
today on standback here.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Well, I'm actually going to pass the baton because, as
far as I understand, Jay rob you're classically trained in
the technobil, aren't you.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yes, Well, who's.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Your team played at a lot of cowboys?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Cowboys?
Speaker 5 (00:32):
All right?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I was a cap bozo Chicago Bears guy. But Isaiah,
you're killing who's your squad Raiders?
Speaker 6 (00:37):
Your Raiders definitely bo Jackson, unstoppable.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I got nothing. I'm not of the techmobile generation, but
I appreciate and respect a good T shirt when it
comes by, especially with the Michael Irvan running through Technobile. Everybody,
it's GMFP. It starts right now, We're gonna play three.
Speaker 7 (00:52):
And oho, Good mon football.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
That's right, It's GMTB. Everybody Happy. June third, Tuesday. I
believe since we're all parents at the table, we are
inching closer to the end of the school year. And
much like how I like to check in before the
holiday break with the Brandt family. Kyle, how's life in
the end of the school year nearing summertime with the.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Brands It's like the coming of the apocalypse, Like we're preparing.
We're having bats of gasoline and artificial sunlight machines and
shotgun shells and all the things to prepare for when
the school finally lets the kids out.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Jay, Rob, your kids are a little bit older, how's
it for you?
Speaker 5 (01:40):
It's been good.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
They've been out for a while now. I got one
home from college and yeah, we get down. We get
a little early down to Tennis City for you guys,
do it right down there, and good, Yeah, we try.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
What do you think you're out already?
Speaker 6 (01:50):
Yeah, we're out already. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Right.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
My daughter got dropped off at Type one diabetes camp.
My other daughters in the middle of track season, and
my son's plays soccer right now, So it's all going
on at the standback household, Kyle, Just to fire.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
You up, I signed my kids up first time ever
flag football for the fall. So it's literally like, oh,
you turn four, get out there, put a flag in
your shorts, and let's go that's the spirit, that's the sport.
Time for three and out, though, let's focus on the
NFL in June first out, the Steelers have been linked
two free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was still deciding
if he would like to play a twenty first NFL season.
(02:23):
So in the meantime, veteran Mason Rudolph and sixth round
rookie Will Howard are sharing the reps for the Steelers
and head coach Mike Tomlins squad. Here's the question on
three and out. Is Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers just
a matter of time? John? Is it an inevitability considering
those are the two quarterbacks the Steelers are working with
(02:44):
right now?
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Yeah, I'm going to say yes. You know, Aaron's taking
his time. He's obviously not in a rush. He's played
the game a long time. He's done it at a
high level. You know, he missed I think a camp
last year because he was out, you know, out of
the country on a trip. I think he'll be there
in late July in time for training camp, ready to
(03:09):
get acclimated with the new acquisitions that they have, learn
the system. He's throwing the ball around the yard for
a lot of years and done at a high level.
I still think he's a really good player. I still
think he loves the game, and I think that football
is what he has right, and I think that he
wants to do it on his timetable. He's earned that right,
(03:31):
and in time he'll be putting on the black and yellow.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
John, respond to this take from your perspective, The take
out there that it's team game is team sport. He'd
be changing locker rooms. Again, he should be there. He
should be getting to know his teammates, his receivers, his coaches,
the janitors, all of that. As someone who's going to
make what he's going to make, who's going to play
that role he's going to play.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
He should be there. And if he was about winning,
he would be there.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
I saw my lifelong friend Ross Tucker, who I know,
you know, has said, listen, say all you want about
Aaron Rodgers, but he has surrendered the right to say
that winning is the most important thing to him. You
cannot tell me that and not be there. As a
guy who used to run these things, how do you
feel about those takes?
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Listen, they're all valid, yeah, right, But again, I think
a guy that has played this long and done it
at the level that he's done it, and I think
there's a need there for Aaron Rodgers from the Steelers,
like they need Aaron in there leverage. So, you know,
kind of he holds all the cards. He's going to
do it on his timetable. I don't know, Aeron, I've
never worked with Aaron. Just looking at it from afar,
(04:37):
he kind of marches to his own beat and when
he wants to get back in, you know, in the
saddle and put the helmet on, I think he's going
to do it.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
Isaiah, Yeah, I'm of the belief that Aaron Rodgers will
be the quarterback for the Steelers this year. And I'm
also the belief that I think that he should be
in the building right now. And I understand that he's
a veteran. I understand he's been playing for twenty years.
He's done all the things right. He's an absolute beast
at the quarterback position, and he still has a lot
left in the tank. However, there's other guy that depend
(05:05):
on you when you're at the quarterback position, and regardless
of how you don't want to do OTAs regardless of
how you're a veteran and you feel like you don't
need to be in the building. These guys need to
hear you. Your center needs to take snaps from you.
Your office. A lineman need to get a cadence and
an understanding of what your timing is. Your receivers need timing,
They need a ball placement. They need to understand the velocity,
the angles, all the things, the communication. There's so much
(05:27):
that goes into the quarterback position, which is why we
covert that position so much. That's why these guys get
paid what they get paid, because everybody can't do their
job unless that person is on their game, and him
not being in a building right now is going to
have an impact. Even when he signs with the Steelers
and we talk about it on the show, all that
Jazz is still missing it valuable time right now that
(05:47):
the team needs, not necessarily that he needs, but that
the team needs in order for them to be productive
this year.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
You know, I regret using kind of a divisive word
and an unscripted one in my te up, which was
that it is inevitable that the Rogers is going to
go to the Steelers because I feel that the the
reason why he's not there yet, is that it's not
inevitable that why are we not talking about the fact
that what are the Saints doing at quarterback? And if
he's really going to hold leverage over a team, The
(06:14):
fact that the Vikings just don't know how JJ McCarthy
is going to pan out until well into training camp.
We don't like is he fully healthy? The Saints who
in their quarterback room alone, it's Spencer Rattler and they
have a brand new head coach who knows what it's
like in Kellen Moore to work with great quarterbacks. Why
are we not opening the field up a little bit?
And how dare I use the word inevitable? And Rogers
(06:36):
going to the Steelers? Kyle, can I just tee you
up in the fact that it could be somebody else,
some other jersey and color besides the green or the
black and goal that Rogers could be wearing next season.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Sure, I mean it's always fun to talk about.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Last week, I'm watching this video if he's on stage
somewhere saying he's going to play for a team that
plays Chicago and the Steelers play Chicago, and then someone
aske him if he's go join the Saints. I think
he straight up said, no, I'm not living in New Orleans.
I'm too old for that. Listen, loves playing this game.
I don't think he enjoys the media, but I think
he likes being part of the meeting, and I think
he loves tweaking the media. So he's sitting here and
(07:13):
he likes making people wait, why is he doing this?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
He's got his personal reasons, but so I think he's
kind of bored.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
He's the joker with his head out of the squad car,
just letting the wind blow his hair. He loves this stuff,
and he'll sign when he's good and damn ready for
season fifty or whatever it is. I don't think he's
joining the Saints. I think he's joining the Steelers. He
likes to play for Tomlin. He's doing all. We're going
to see it eventually, but listen, best believe if he
doesn't come out in the first couple weeks, there's going
to be takes about no chemistry with the wide receivers
(07:41):
and blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
We'll be ready. We'll have our forks out and we'll dig.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
In, never forks out. My gosh, there's a great joker reference.
I know.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
JayR.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I love that giggle, all right, green Bay head coach.
Let's move on to Usually we'd see him with the
Green Bay conversation, but now we see him Jordan Love.
Head coach Matt Lafleur defended his quarterback yesterday against the
narrative that last season was a step back for Jordan
Love and the twenty six year old signal call there.
Speaker 8 (08:06):
I think there's like a narrative out there that for
whatever reason, that he wasn't as productive as the year before. Well,
I mean he missed significant time.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
He missed.
Speaker 8 (08:19):
The better of three games. Really it was Indy, it
was Tennessee. He went out in Jacksonville and then he
went out in Chicago. So you know that's going to
three games is a significant amount of time, and it was.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
The start to make them comfortable for the season. It
all had an effect to Love His numbers. Now that
was just in twenty twenty four. This is a look
at the last two years. You can see his completion
percentage is passing arts per game TVs. They all decrease.
Now that narrative exists, perhaps on paper, but it is
not a reality for Packers and what Matt Lafour believes
(08:57):
to be the market of success for his quarterback. So
here comes a second down. What do we need to
see from Jordan Love this season? John, to make sure
that you put a stamp in fans' minds that Jordan
Love is progressing the way he needs to s QB
in Green Bay.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Yeah, I'm going to stand out there with Matt on
the on the podium and defend Jordan Love. I think
this guy is a good player with upside to be
an outstanding player. I think when you look at offensively stylistically,
the way they want to play the game right, They've
got Josh Jacobs, They've got a good offensive line. They're
not going to ask Jordan to drop back fifty times
and throw the ball. They're going to run the football,
(09:34):
They're going to run play action pass. They still want
to hit some explosive plays down the field. But when
you look at the numbers last year, I mean, he
was his completion percentage was like sixty three percent, but
he had twenty seven passes that were dropped and if
you adjust that, it balloons to seventy two percent. So
you know, I want him to take command right and
(09:55):
and be on his receivers as tight ends the offensive line.
Just take command of that offense. Is like, guys, like,
we're going to be a good offense. But I you
guys to go out there and when I put it
in a window for you to make the play, go
make it. You know, and I understand like you're not
going to catch every ball. Drops are going to happen, sure,
but when you can come down with those plays, it
(10:15):
just accentuates the offense, and it accentuates the way that
Jordan Love plays a game.
Speaker 6 (10:19):
Yeah, and coach speaking, it shows stats don't tell the
whole story, right, So that's why you can look at
stats and you can use a video of the evidence
to obviously support your case. I don't believe that his
game has regressed. You heard coach talk about how he
didn't play as many games. One thing that I would
like to see out of Jordan Love is his accuracy increase.
I would like to see that take a step forward
and his decision making. Those are things that I want
(10:41):
to see improve. You see it on your screen right now,
you're kind of just throwing it up hoping that guy's
got to make plays for him. I want him to
be more dialed in and I want him his ball
location to be better, because when you talk about John
how they're going to have a solid running game and
how it's gonna be very complimentary to him, that means
he's going to have less opportunities. If you have less opportunities,
then you need to be more efficient with the opportunities
that you actually get. I think if they can do that,
(11:02):
they'll be in a better position to go out there
and make a better run in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Well, yeah, you brought me to it for this year.
For Jordan Love, he should be starting a home playoff game.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
He's never done that before.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
They should be winning the North, like the North is
there for them. Let's understand, the Lions just got completely
pillaged of their coordinators, the Vikings have a neo fight
at quarterback, and the Bears, respectfully from the Packers' point
of view, are still the Bears latest season loss.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Notwithstanding, Let's not also forget the.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Packers just drafted a wide receiver in the first round.
They took another wide receiver in the third round. They're
insulating him, they're helping him. They have the most NFC
North winning product right now. I love the lines as
much as the next guy. We've seen teams lose their
coordinators and lose their swagger. The Packers have their guy,
they have their coach, they have their weapons, they have
their defense. It's been a few years since the Packers
(11:52):
have won the North. We don't usually say that. If
you look at them across the board, Detroit is formidable.
But I don't see a teams that you should favor
to win the North more than the Packers.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
I don't know if they will. If they will because
he made the.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Jump, but at the end, at the end of the season,
if we are not seeing him play his first ever
playoff game in lambeau Field, I don't think it was
the jump the Packers needed.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Well, to Lafleur's reference last season, the way that it
started in international game against the Eagles, that was the
start of something frustrating for the Packers but something great
for the Philadelphia Eagles. For third down, we're looking at
the guy who's gracing the cover of Madden twenty six. It's,
of course Saquon Barkley in the moment that what feels
like is going to define the twenty twenty four to
(12:32):
twenty five season for the NFL. It's his reverse leap.
The incredible image that will stay in our memories forever.
There is a behind the scenes video out there of
how Madden captured the cover and how they got this
moment to recreate itself. And there is a hole, there
was a harness and a leap, and you got to
help him stay up there for a second, which he
(12:52):
had none of those things when it happened in real life.
Speaker 7 (12:55):
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
And you know, sure there's a harness, you know, right
straight vertical.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Look at that. He looks like he lingers there for
a second. Barkley. Barkley joined The Insiders on Monday and
talked about the honor of gracing Madden twenty six in
the iconic video game.
Speaker 9 (13:10):
Yeah, when you get that call, you kind of you
don't know what to expect, right, and they actually do
you want to be part of manning cover? And I
don't know if anyone's ever turned that down. I definitely
wasn't going to turn that down to opportunity. But like
you said, I know so many people and so many
kids out dream and would love to be in a
position I am right now. And I remember as a kid,
(13:30):
you know, wanting to be part of maddening cover and
then so many great players that have been part of
Mannic cover and now to be mentioned and have my
name attached with those guys.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
You know, words really can't describe.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
There's been a lot of great players to grace the
cover of Madden and it is a fantastic video game,
and Saquon Barkley can now put his name on that list.
But there's also this john kind of awkward part of this,
which is the Madden Curse. What do we make of
Saquon Barkley being on the cover of the video game?
But also what do you make of the Madden Curse?
You believe in it?
Speaker 5 (13:58):
No, I don't believe it.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
In a short how blessure And to what you referenced
earlier with Isaiah's Technobol shirt there like that that was
what I could play because it had two buttons and
like the cross the controller for these games. Now it
looks like it could launch like a NASA shuttle. Yes,
I don't even know how to turn it on.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yep, let alone, what bud the toggles up here and
these das vibrating on the ree and it's not for you.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Second I needed Yeah, I'm out, So keep it simple
and to me. But you know, Saquan has been an
outstanding player. He is an outstanding player. Kudos to him
for getting this honor. I don't believe in the Madden curse.
I hope out there. I hope he goes out there
and does this thing like he does like he did
last year. I mean, run for twenty five hundred yards,
three thousand yards whatever you want to ta Kwan who
(14:47):
you're saying, buddy.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
Yeah, I keep it short here.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
I don't believe in a Madden curse. I think that
Saquan is a heck of a player. I think that
the organization that he's playing for, the team that he
has around him, the offensive line that's blocking in front
of him, I think he's going to be just fine. Uh.
This may not even be the last time. Make you
see him on a Madden cover.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Have we seen anybody double up?
Speaker 2 (15:05):
I don't think it's a great question.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
I don't believe so. But he has opportunity with that team.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yeah, probably.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Well.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I have a lot to say on this.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
One of the things that Saquan just caught my attention
with was he says, I don't know if anybody's ever
turned it down.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
If you want a.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Really interesting read, go back and read la Danian Thomlinson
turned it down in two thousand and seven. He said
he didn't want to do it. They went to him,
one of the biggest stars in the league, and he
just kind of said, I don't think they were going
to give me what I was worth, and they asked
me to do a lot of stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
And it just wasn't for me.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
So it's a really interesting commentary. So he did stiff
arm the Matten cover.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
That's happened. My attention, however, here goes.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I'm very happy for Saquon and he deserved it, and
he's the perfect guy to be on the cover, But
bring up the cover itself.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
My attention goes elsewhere because.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
There's Saquon doing his thing and it's glorious, and the
Kelly Green it's the guy at the bottom of the screen. Now,
for the actual Madden shoot they had to stand in.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
But for the actual play, they didn't show us the play.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
And I wanted your attention to go to rookie Jaguars
corner Jarian Jones, who will forever be the guy who's
underneath that leave number twenty two.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
He's in perfect coverage.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
He drops his pads and it gets jumped over, and
all of a sudden, he's, you know, Frederick Weiss getting
dunked on by Vince Carter. It's nothing like that. And
I saw jokes yesterday about Jarian Jones. Congratulations, you made
the Madden cover. First Jaguar to ever make the Madden cover.
I just want to take a second and hype Jarian Jones.
Let's get into Jarian Jones, not Saquon Barkley. Jarian Jones
(16:30):
aka j Doub aka double Deuce out of Florida State
to Florida State.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
He won the Bobby.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
Bowden Leadership Award for character and for leadership. He played
fifty five games, intercepted future pros like Anthony Richinson and
Sam Howell. Then he shows up to the combine. Jarian
Jones on the Madden cover, shows up to the combine, runs.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Four to three vertical jump.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Forty inches tests incredibly, He's turning heads and this is
before again they put him on the Madden cover for
what for doing his job? He gets drafted by the
Debt by the Jaguars, his childhood favorite team, and has
a fantastic rookie season.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
You may not know it. He was excellent.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
He intercepted Jordan love A one week before the Eagles game.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
There it is.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
He had two sacks as a rookie cornerback. He was
the best Jaguar in coverage. He was the second best
defender against the run and the second best rookie defender
in the entire NFL, second only to Cooper dejen He's
a member of PFF's All Rookie Team, and the hurdle
it happened he was in perfect position to make a
play in. That play was one of seven hundred and
(17:34):
seventy one snaps that Jarian Jones played as a rookie.
Seven seventy were excellent, one was infamous. I even like
his attitude about the play. Asked about being the guy
who Saquan jumped over, Jarian Jones says, quote, Saquon is
touched by God.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
What are you gonna do about that?
Speaker 1 (17:52):
If you're touched by God, you get jumped over? And
Jari and I don't think they're about of jokes. I
think you should tell your kids about this someday, and
you can also make sure to tell them that Aaron
Rodgers was never on the cover of Madden JJ Watt
was fro on the cover of Madden. Derek Henry was
never on the cover of Madden. And you, my friend,
in your own way, are on the cover of Madden.
And you always will be at least your legacy. So
(18:13):
I respect you and go out and have a killer
second year. Jarian Jones say, my Madden cover guy is
Jarian Jones, and I stand by it, Jay, Rob what
do you think?
Speaker 4 (18:22):
No, you're that was I mean, let's give it up
for j and Jones. Yeah, yes, great great rookie season. Yes,
one play, one play doesn't I think your your speech
there exemplifies that one play doesn't define the player or
(18:42):
a player season. You know, Jorian had a great season.
You know, one play happened against a really supreme player.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
And you know what.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
You know what, guys, Now he's gonna come out for
his second year as this great corner for Jag from Jaguars,
and anybody's gonna ask him about is Travis Hunter saque
Marklee and Travis Hunter is going to be his entire
life and he's.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Like, dude, I'm all rookie pff I.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Played well too, So like we got to get Jarian
Jones on the show, and we gotta make sure that
we have his back, even though everyone else wants to
just laugh about Saquon jumping over it.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
That tackle was made on the one thousand other NFL
players except for the one that he went to go
get during that reverse hurdle. So Jarian Jones, we love
you on GMTP. Kyle, quick question for you. I'm watching
that video if we have it again. I'm watching the
video of Saquon having to remake the hurdle and remake
the hurdle move. Do we think we ever get to
a point if you're Saquon Barkley, if you're like this
(19:31):
vanilla ice, like play ice ice baby, like, does ever
just gonna get sick of being harnessed up and like
extracted in mid air like I do other things? Guys
Like is this going to become Saquon's one hit wonder?
Like this is his last photo shoot where he has
to recreate the hurdle and he wants to move on
and do other things with his life. Kyle, this one
has to grant your question.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Well, but I don't think he's vanilla Ice.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
He's more like he's like LEDs up on the stairway
to happen like this is the one song that a
lot of people know who aren't otherwise huge fans. But Jamie,
you know what, I'm a huge fan of every once
in a while. Let's go back to the Jamie camp.
There's the background picture behind you that is really funny.
It looks like Saquon is best sitting on your shoulder
at worst something.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
I'm not gonna say. Move there.
Speaker 7 (20:10):
Look at that.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
He's like your little angel on theissolder there.
Speaker 7 (20:13):
I love there.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
There. Yeah, John, Oh my god, there's Jerry and we
don't know.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
Back to the That's what it is.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Jari and Jones, Jari and Jones.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
All right, welcome back to Good Morning Football.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
If you've been watching today and yesterday, you know that
our friend John Robinson is joining me here in studio
here in New York. John's had a long career in
the NFL different front offices, and at one point, John,
you were the director of college scouting for the Bill
Belichick New England Patriots in the heart of the Dynasty.
And what John's gonna do today is tell us stories,
stories that he's lived through about that era and other eras.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
And after each story, we.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Are going to rank them like Doctor J holding up
a seven or an eight during the slam Dunk contest
when it used to be fun. And we will rank
all John's stories and see where they come out on
our own scale. But storying them, I will take you,
my friends, to the twenty ten NFL draft here in
New York City at Radio City Music Hall.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Sam Bradford went number one overall to the Rams.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
And as we go to the second round, the Bills
had just taken Terrell Troop, a defensive tackle for Central Florida,
and then things got nuts.
Speaker 5 (21:20):
Watch this.
Speaker 10 (21:22):
Bongland has traded the forty second pick to New England.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
With the forty.
Speaker 10 (21:27):
Second pick in the twenty ten NFL drafts, the New
England Patriots select Rob Bronkowski, tight end Arizona.
Speaker 11 (21:39):
Man, I'm so funny up man, this is a great organization.
That's awesome. You gotta have one of the best quarterbacks
ever in the league to be throwing me the ball.
This is the greatest moment of my life. Man, this
is unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
All right, John, so you're here, First of all, what's
it like to watch scronk and then tell us how
this will happen?
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Yeah, I'm sitting there kind of chuck on watching how
it all unfolded. So we were at forty four and
the Baltimore Ravens were ahead of us at forty three,
and we felt like, you know, Todd Heap was there
in Baltimore, but we felt like there was kind of
be a changing of the guard there at the tight
end position. So Bill picks up the phone. Nick Caseio
pick up the phone. They start calling Oakland, right, They're
(22:19):
trying to get mister Davis on the phone.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
You know, the clocks ticking down.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
This is Al Davis. This is Al Davis. Yeah, he's
out on a walk somewhere or something.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
I don't know. Bill can't get him.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Bill's got the phone like this and he's kind of
given me this and the clock is ticking down. There's
like three minutes left. So he points to the draft
board at Rob. So at that time, you had the
speaker in the middle of the table, and I got
our representatives in New York and said, hey, write this
name down, Rob Grinkowski, tight end, Arizona.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
We're trying to make a trade. Here, hold the card.
Hold the card, and I'm.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
Like, do you have action? And when I asked, do
you have action? Is there any other action at another table?
When he said, Baltimore's rep just got up and went
to the draft table. At that time, you had to
turn him in at a desk. So I'm like, all right,
hold it, hold it now.
Speaker 5 (23:06):
It's two minutes.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
Now, it's like ninety seconds, and it's a minute and
Bill's like still giving me this. Nick's on the phone,
and I'm like, all right, when this goes through, I
think it's gonna get done, Like you got to run.
And so Bill finally gives me the thumbs up. And
there's like twenty seconds and Nick's calling the league to
make sure the trade goes in. And I said, Jimmy,
(23:27):
you got it, and he goes, I got it. Rob
Gronkowski tight end Arizona. Jimmy takes off sprinting. He gets
the card into the table with like two seconds left.
The Baltimore rep is standing right there. He turns in
his cart at the same right after our so our
pick is in. You know, we jumped ahead of Baltimore.
We had forty two. Baltimore was immediately on the clock
(23:49):
at forty three and they were ready to pick. We
get Rob grind Cawski. They take Sergio Kenda, a linebacker
out of Texas. They thought we were clamoring up to
get Sergio. We thought they were clamoring up to get Rob.
And it's just the you know, the kind of misdirection
that's what happens in the draft. But we were able
to get Rob. Great player. You know, he's talked about
(24:11):
his the whole process and the draft interview and all
that stuff that he didn't do so well on.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
But I mean talk about a guy.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
That loved football, loved football, was a great teammate and
was it was it was fun to be a part
of the team when he was there.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
All right, it's fantastic, and you have an actual buzzer
beater three.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
It's like a Mission Impossible movie. We submit the thing.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
We're gonna write down our scores quickly. Tell us what
your memories Gronke didn't like his interview. What are your
memories of his interview?
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Well, he would, I mean, he went on about he
fell asleep, and then he I asked him, like what
he liked to do besides football, and he liked SpongeBob.
It was just kind of but I just kept coming
back to the film and the guy was just such
a beast.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
You know, I start this off like the fact that
that's the nature and you're going back and forth.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
You can't get mister Davis on the phone.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
You have the guy who is maybe the best tight
end to ever play the game and will be a
first Baut Hall of Famer. I have an eight eight
for the Rob Grondkowski story. Where do you guys go?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Dang it, you guys are all gonna you know me,
I'm going I had goose bumps.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
I did?
Speaker 2 (25:13):
I did?
Speaker 5 (25:13):
Who?
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Who is this person that had you run the card?
Jimmy Who? Jimmy What? What would Jimmy do for you guys?
Speaker 5 (25:18):
Jimmy D.
Speaker 4 (25:18):
So Jimmy D was our video sausage, No, Jimmy Dean
Jimmy D. Shout out Jimmy D. Jimmy time video coordinator
there with New England. Great, great guy. Okay, great, and
know how fast he was, but he's fast enough to
be closed. The lid gets dicey sometimes. But what's the
next story, John, Let's get into that.
Speaker 6 (25:37):
All right.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
So we've got a couple of combine interview stories. Once
while I was in Tampa and and we're you know,
we bring in it was a defensive back, and you
know you do the pledge intries, Hey, how you doing
where you're from? Tell me about your family, YadA, YadA, YadA.
So we want to get into.
Speaker 5 (25:53):
The nuts of bolts right with.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
With what the guy actually knows about the game of football.
So we're like, all right, tell us, why don't you
just get up on the white board there and draw,
you know, one of your lead coverages, like one of
the main coverage. So the player gets up there and
he starts drawing, and he's drawing. When he draws the receivers,
I know we're probably going down the wrong path when
he's putting o's and he's putting x's instead of like
(26:18):
Z receiver, slot receiver, X receiver. So we've got o's
and x's up there. So somebody stops and one of
the coaches stop him in Tampa and we're.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
Like, what what did.
Speaker 5 (26:28):
You call this? Covers? And he goes, oh, we call this,
we call this.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
Three CAT and we're like write it up there, like
write the coverage up there so we know.
Speaker 5 (26:36):
So he he goes three K A.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
T and I just kind of put my hand and
I like this and I'm like, yeah, I don't.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
I don't know if this is gonna go real.
Speaker 4 (26:49):
Well, we finished the interview and uh, let's just say
we didn't draft the player. He went on to play
for a little while. I don't forgot I forgot who
he played for. But you get a lot of things
in these draft interviews. I've got another one after you
guys score this one.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Oh really, all right, I'm going to do this.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
The scores right there, three Cat three Cat.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Oh that's right.
Speaker 6 (27:16):
I remember being in the New England pat room at
the Combine and having to be on the board.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
So I'm rugging with a seven.
Speaker 6 (27:23):
I remember how stressful that was. But I didn't spell cat.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
No, I didn't do that. See I see, I go
the top opposite way on this.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
I love this guy. I'm going with a one for
the story. I think Cat was based on someone's name
that was K A T. And I think he's laughing
at you, Jay Rob. It's actually spelled with a K.
He went out to become a first team All Pro.
People don't know that it's actually the story. The player
is actually Durell Revis. I'll just score it right now.
So he ended up having the last lap. I'm gonna
give that a one, John, what's your next?
Speaker 3 (27:52):
It wasn't res all right.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
So the other Combine interview story our scouts had, you know,
the scouts go out on the road and I'll tell
a couple of scouting stories next, right, But they come
back with their inform, you know, the background on the player,
things that the player has gone through. And this player
had been accused or of taking something right, doing something.
(28:14):
I don't know if it was out of lockers, but
there was some's just say petty theft involved, got it,
no convictions or anything. So we're we're sitting there in
the draft in the combine room and somebody brings it
up and like he he kind of just like looks
and is shocked that we're asking him the question, and
(28:36):
like all of a sudden deadpen he looks.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
He he looks at whoever asked the question.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
He was like, man, who he stole some stuff before?
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Who astole some stuff before?
Speaker 4 (28:48):
Yeah, so we just start laughing, you know, because like
how do you come back from from you know, from that?
And so yeah, always the Combine interviews are always entertaining
with the with the answers that you get.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Did you guys end up drafting that player.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
No, we did not draft no, no, but he packed
up the room, though.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
He did laugh.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
He played, yeah, all right, I.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Like this story, John.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
To answer your own question, how does one move on
from that? Did you still put him on the board
or were you just like, all right, nice to meet you.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
Oh yeah, Like well, we were actually laughing with him
with his answer yes, because like he admitted, like, yeah,
I did it, but like you know, I'm still a
good player. Like if you want me to take.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
Me, I listen. I like this story.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
I think he was going to the Gospel of John
and let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
He's basically saying, glass houses on you guys. I'm looking
around at all these coaches in here. You're not exactly
a bunch of Saints and gms and all that. I
stole some stuff, you know, you stole some stuff.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
I like this player. I give it a six.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
I'm rocking with five. Who ain't five?
Speaker 5 (29:51):
All right?
Speaker 6 (29:51):
Who ain't five? I know I stole you being here
at LA.
Speaker 5 (29:54):
I know.
Speaker 6 (29:55):
I stole a postcard of a woman when I was
like five years old. It's the only thing I've ever
stole them. Really, Yeah, my mom brings it up all
the time. It was a it was a postcard of
a lady in an outfit, and I took it to
the car. And when I got to the car, she said, uh,
I know you was not going to steal that. Take
it right back. So I had to go back and
return to the place car and.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Then go back to that she wearing an outfit or
a swimsuit suit.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
They make him without the outfit.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Too, That's what he's trying to admit. I'm gonna give
this afore. All of a sudden, my empathy chip is
coming into I feel badly telling the stories about these guys.
So Kat and who ain't stole something? I don't want
to even answer that question. I appreciate your honesty. Okay,
go ahead, John, This is good, This is good.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
All right, let's go John.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
Okay, So, last couple of stories about scouting trips. Right,
you know, you get you go out on the road,
and you deploy your scouts to all of these schools.
So one time, myself and Monty Austin for it. I'm
gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna give Mantya a little proper here.
We're at a school. He's a GM. Now at Cardinals,
we're at a school and the pro liaison there's always
one dedicated coach that talks about, you know, every player,
(31:02):
and there was a dB and he was trying to
talk about the intricacies of their defense and their coverage calls, right,
and every coach thinks that their offensive or defensive scheme
is like the matrix, like nobody can fire.
Speaker 5 (31:16):
That's so sophisticated.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
Even though I had an old coach tell me one time, listen,
coverage wise, it's covered one, two, three, four, and the
rest of it's just made up, right. So I always
got to chuckle out of when I heard all these
intricate calls. So the pro liaison is telling us like, well,
we've simplified it. We've called it best coverage, so we'll
call it the front and then we go best coverage.
So I kind of got a chuckle out of, like,
(31:39):
you know, them calling it best coverage, because like, all right,
well here's your.
Speaker 5 (31:44):
Coverage really the best.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
So we take a break from the film and we
go into you know, the restroom to you know, do
what you do in the restaurant. I didn't know that
the actual defensive coordinator was in the stall, the door closes,
so and I didn't see, you know, great, So yeah,
I go in there and i'm, you know, kind of
(32:09):
I think I'm waiting by the sink, and you know,
Moni's doing what he's doing. And it's like I say
something like.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
What about the best coverage? There money?
Speaker 4 (32:18):
And the door opened and the coordinator comes out and
he goes, you boys know about best coverage? Oh no,
And I was just like, oh, hey, coch Yeah, the
so and so coach was just telling about it.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
I think it's a great concept.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
So I totally pivot and he goes and so he
went from like confrontational to like trying to explain it again,
like well, let me tell you about the US coverage.
Come by my office and we'll draw it up for you.
So we got busted, MONI and I did, but we
were able to kind of backpedal our way out and
save the day.
Speaker 5 (32:50):
Fantastic.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
What do you guys got at?
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Anytime someone says and then the bathroom door stall closes,
I'm in on this story, like I had this happened
to me my own house recently. I was complaining about
my sister and her husband over heard me ten feet away,
and I was like, oh crap, there you go. It's
a terrible situation and sometimes you can't talk your way
out of it.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
John.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
I respect the fact that you MONI could.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
I'm gonna go with a ten.
Speaker 6 (33:11):
I was gonna call this call of duty because at
no point in time did this dude wash his hands
the entire story. He came out explaining, probably using hand
gestures and probably pointing at you guys, let me tell
you about the best coverage, ie a dodging like this
the whole time.
Speaker 5 (33:30):
Dude.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
For sure, I feel like, first of all, that coach
knew you guys were in there. He pulled his little
feet up so you couldn't see anything. And I feel
like you're just teeing off on.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
Best coverage and you just heard shy flush.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Oh no, I have it as a nine. Nice, it's efensive.
Best stories transport you. I can see this.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
Bathroom, I can smell this bathroom. I feel like I'm
in this bathroom with you.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
The only thing that makes it not a ten is
if you had a nervous reaction and gone for the handshake. Hey, coach,
how you doing, And then it's just completely more disgusting.
So I'll keep it down at a nine. That's a
tough act to follow. We got the last one, now, yeah,
last one.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
So I'm at I'm at uh where I'm by myself
at Kansas. And as a scout, you usually, you know,
you try to do some things for the coaches. You
stop and get bagels, you stop and get donuts, you
know something. But in the month, I mean, it's long hours, right.
So I'm at I'm at Kansas, and I take a break.
I'm going in to get some coffee, and you put
it all in there by the coffee and and Mark
(34:25):
Mangino was the head coach at time, and and and
Mark Mark Mark Bark big man now and uh, he
was a he was a great guy on school calls.
So I walk in the coffee room and to get
a cup of coffee, and I see coach Mangino. But
he's got his back to me, and he's got on
(34:46):
this like black fleece and he kind of looks like
a bear cub standing there, you know, kind of covering
up you know, most of the counter. And I say, hey, hey, coach,
how you doing? And he kind of looks over his
shoulder and he goes hey, and he turns around and
he's got two pies and he won a me chand
(35:08):
and he's.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
Like, you want somebody's pies. I was like, Coach, I'm
I'm good, I'm good on pie. Appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
But all I could think about was this big man
looks like a bear and ironically, like Yogi did stole pies.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
With two pies. It's incredible.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
And there picking the basket rock Chuck jay Hawk. Go ahead,
you guys, Oh my gosh, there's a picture of that.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Dang. I just spit out of my mouth. And you
said turn around. I was like, on the edge, you
know what, screw it? Tell me give it that a ten. Yep,
I'm giving it a ten again. I'm going second ten
from the day. I was like, either he's gonna turn
around and doesn't have a shirt on under the sleeve
or something else is happening. What is he holding at
the coffee counter? That one had me on the edge
of my seat. That's a ten for me.
Speaker 6 (35:54):
I'm breaking to eight because I don't know where Coach
was going with these pies, Like where was he going?
The fact that he had these pies, like he was
going to smuggle these things out of the spot like that.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
To a good point. And you know what else. I
bet if John had said yes, I will take one,
I bet he would have been pissed. So John, you know,
he was off offering out being social, not out of love.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
I'm always most amused by the inner makings of this show.
This whole segment's been pretty The focus has been on you,
and it's been spartan in the production elements. You hadn't
even said Mark Mangino for a millisecond. There's fifty pictures
of him just jumping up here, like obviously someone was
doing the hunting for the Mangino pictures.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
Like, oh, I this one, this one, we get it.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
Yes, he was a typical body type. Yes, we had
fifty pictures of him. I will give this a five,
just right down the middle to end it. Mangino was
running things in Laurence, Kansas for a while, and he
was at the Jayhawks just doing stuff.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
He had great pros. I loved him.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
I loved watching him, and I loved the story about
the pies. Any idea what the flavor of the pie was?
Speaker 4 (36:54):
I had no idea. They were a heavy meringue. Oh yeah,
a lot of them one and the other one had
that you know, buttery Christ.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
So do we have combined scores with scores?
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Bring them up? Oh? Combined?
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Okay, here we go. Awkward Awkward restroom is a twenty nine.
What do you think Jonathan scores?
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I don't even think that.
That doesn't even get me in the finals. But it
was fun telling them.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
It's fun to liver level stories about the things that
I did in my career.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Tell you it gets to fifty.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Those aviators start your engines at home. Look at j
Rob on the left with the beard and the aviators.
Speaker 5 (37:30):
That's right, Ice man, I am j hard out.
Speaker 3 (37:34):
You can be minding a man anytime.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
John.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
Let's go
