partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good Morning Football, Everybody.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
On a Wednesday, August twenty seven, Jamie ear at all
Man TODAYO, Isaiah standback here in Los Angeles. Kyle Brant
getting lost in the throes of Buffalo Wings in Western
New York, preparing to interview Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
We heard from CJ. Stroud last hour.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
We have a good little game coming off with GMFB
edition this hour, and it's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
A good time.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
It's gonna be a great time. We missed Kyle. I
know you don't miss us.
Speaker 5 (00:34):
He's little bit at fine, first class.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
Isaiah, Like, what is that? I don't know. I think
he could have walk to New York. I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
If it's such a good point, I think he's supposed
to say, right now, roll it, roll it?
Speaker 6 (00:43):
Yeah, that one Good Morning Football.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
And thank you as always to Melissa Ethridge for lending
her voice to our two June.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
That welcomes us into CMFB. We've been busy in August.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
It's a lot of preparing for the season and promotion
for Good Morning Football. Nanty, you did your first big
old one on one interview yesterday, yes in anticipation of
a show we get to do for NBC next week
Wednesday night. It's Kickoff Eve and it's all at anticipation
of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
But how'd that go for you?
Speaker 5 (01:25):
I have a great empathy and appreciation respect for reporters
because that was my first ever one on one sit down,
and I learned very very quickly that you have to
be able to warm up the person that changing, Yes,
you gotta. You can't just go strip for the juggler
like I went in. I went into it as a
defensive minded guy. I went full speed, full send, and
(01:48):
you know, to Kyle Hamilton's point, I'm into his credit.
He handled it with class and with poise as he
does as he plays on the football field.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
But I learned a lot yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I think we're going to have Josh Allen, Kyle Hamilton,
Derwin James, and some other extra special things at the
hand of NBC next ONETH tonight, So we're excited about that.
But until we're just going to keep it straight GMFB style.
Let's go three and out and our first down in
honor of the sweater that Manta is wearing, the Cowboys
Dak Prescott has not played a single snap this preseason.
The team's offense has not been lights out without him,
(02:18):
ranking twenty eighth in total yards per game, leading a
reporter to act Dak this question.
Speaker 7 (02:24):
Sean never talked a lot about keeping a kind of
vanilla with what he's shown an offense, and that what
should Cowboys fans expect to see from this offense this year?
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah? An exciting offense. We've keptain vanilla for for a reason.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
So excited about getting out there and putting it all
on display next Thursday.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Okay, I get that, and I respect it.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
But the expectation still is that a new head coach
with that quarterback would elicit some change, some production offensively
for the Cowboys in twenty twenty five. Isaiah, what are
you expecting a man that's in the building, in the
lunch line at the practice, what are you expecting from
this team?
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Fire?
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (02:59):
Yeah, absolute fire. And let me let me help you
guys understand. Why listen, I'm not being a homer. I'm
just talking facts. The last time there was a healthy
Dak Prescott, a healthy CD Lamb, and a healthy Jake Ferguson.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Oh and a play.
Speaker 8 (03:12):
Caller by the name of Brian Schottenheimer was twenty twenty three.
Well what happened in twenty twenty three. Well, Dak Prescott
was first in the league in passing yards. Ceedee Lamb
was second in the league in receiving yards. Jake Ferguson
was the top ten in receiving in number one in
red zone targets. Matter of fact, all three of these
guys were Pro Bowlers.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Two of them were all Pro That's the last time
that these guys were all together.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
And Brian Schottenheimer was in charge of calling the plays
when he was an officer coordinator. He is now the
head coach who is calling the plays, not with the
title office coordinator. Oh but you know what, Jamie, I
forgot one thing. Oh no, yeah, that's not just fire.
That was twenty twenty three with those three guys back
and that head coach now calling the plays.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
There was an addition. You know who they added? Yeah
they ordered Yeah, they ordered that guy right there, George Pickens.
Speaker 8 (04:02):
Yeah, that guy was not a part of the twenty
twenty three roster when they were at the top three
of every statistic category offensively, So you take what they
did in twenty three, and now you add George Pickens
to it. That's why it's going to be fire.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Fire offense and a fire personality as well.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Sure, and so we'll see how that goes well.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
To address to address Dax's comments about keeping it vanilla,
everybody keeps a vanilla increaseious. You know you're not the
only ones trying to keep it vanilla. But to Isaiah's point,
I look at this status Cowboys offense and I compared
a lot to what we have right next door with
the La Rams when they bring Davante Adams over there.
And with that, we talked about this in the green room.
From a defensive standpoint, what does that do to a defense?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
And the safeties? Where am I going to provide help?
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Now you have two star wide receivers, you have to
put safeties over both of them.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Now, what it is different about.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
The La Rams and the Cowboys situation is I often
talk about Kirrien Williams in that run game. There's Javonte
Williams over there now for the Cowboys that he's it's
yet to be determined in my in my opinion, to
see what kind of success you'll see this year. But
somebody that I I am excited to see is Jake
Ferguson that tight end. Isaiah asked me today, what would
(05:10):
happen if Jake Ferguson was out there? Who would have
to guard him?
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Man? I looked at Isaiah square in the face and.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Said, I would have to guard him a linebacker, And
he was like, where's the ball going to Jake Ferguson?
Speaker 4 (05:21):
A linebacker?
Speaker 5 (05:22):
On Jake Ferguson, guess what the ball is going to him?
Nine times out of ten. I'm not trying to tell
fantasy owners to draft him, but what I am saying
is I do.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Expect a big year out of that.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Tight end with that system. So it's looking pretty nice.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Dak has that boy Jack has that sly smile on
his face a lot. Because to your point, there's a
great option to the passing game, But what about the
run game? What was that like in twenty twenty three,
Tony Tony Poller, yeh.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
TV out there.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
I mean you had a TP and you had I
believe it was so these guys were, they were productive
that time. This year, all they're looking to do is
just be in good down and distance. You know, you're
not looking for big splash backs jay On Blue when
he gets healthy, he'll be that guy. But what they're
looking for out of this backfield collectively with Javonte Williams,
Miles Sanders, they just want guys to fall for three
or four y. They just want to be in second
and second and six, you know what I'm saying, Third
(06:07):
and five Like, that's what they're looking for and they'll
have the home run plays later on.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
The biggest challenge I think heading into this year for
the Dallas Cowboys is back in twenty twenty three, the
NFC East defenses weren't good at all, Like they were
ranked from like twenty five to thirty two.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
That's where they all fail.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
So when you think about the defenses that the Commanders
have and you think about the defense that the Eagles
have and the Giants with that pass rush, I think
it's going to there's going to be some challenges compared
to what it was in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
But again with the weapons that.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
They have over there offensively in Dallas, I expect it's
going to look pretty.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Nicells to Atlanta second down now Falcon Falcons star running
back to Jean Robinson was a guest on NFL Fantasy
Live yesterday, and the crew asked him why twenty twenty
five is going to be different for Atlanta. The franchise
has not made the postseason since twenty seventeen, and it's
high for the second longest, actually.
Speaker 9 (06:58):
Really explosive offense, and just our defense has been looking
really well. But you know, I feel for us, like
you know, I think we got us in a buying
you know, these past couple of years I've been here,
we've always kind of looked ahead and we've always talked
about like, you know, we want to make the playoffs,
we want to win the division, we want to you know,
do all these great things that obviously we're is in
our goal. But you know, for us, like you know,
taking care of weeks to a week, taking care of
(07:18):
it one one game at the time, and you know
every game is importing in this league, Like how Raheem says.
You know, we're moving in silence this year, but it's
a real thing because you know, we we don't want
to you know, talk about it and then lose.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Falcons have the best team camera room, I think in
the NFL that's set up and we see those guys
get interviewed for any TV.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Show is fantastic, So well done for those guys.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
There's so much talent on this Falcons roster and we
have complimented them accordingly in the last couple of.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Seasons for it.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
But Isaiah, how did the Falcons move the needle with
that group of guys?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
It makes some noise this year.
Speaker 8 (07:50):
Well, the only noise that I want to hear coming
out of Atlanta is defense. Oh that's all I want
to hear it coming to Atlanta because that's the only
portion of their team that they need to address.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
You talk about a.
Speaker 8 (08:02):
Team that finished twenty fourth in the league and total defense,
a team that finished thirty first in pass rush. These
guys didn't have any pass rush. So what do they
do to address that? Well, they went out with their
two picks in the first round and grab two edge rushers,
two guys to go get the quarterback. If they're able
to elicit pressure defensively, we know what their office canna do.
We can talk about their offensive weapons all day long.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
They need defense.
Speaker 8 (08:24):
So atl stand up, need to see the dirty bird coming.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Soon we'll talk about standing up. We just found out
that Caleb McGarry just got hurt. He's gonna be out
for the year. That's the right tackle. Why is the
right tackle important in this offense is because Michael Penix
is a lefty. So I'm gonna watch it as to
what happens over there on the offensive line for Michael Pennix.
But you're talking about the type of noise that they're
gonna make this.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Year, Let's keep it a buck, guys. It's the NFC South.
The NFC South has.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Run through Tampa the past four years.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
So before we even address that line of Falcons, we
need to talk about.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers because it's going to go through
Tampa again. Now you talk about the Saints, they have
a quarterback issue and a team.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
In Carolina that I really really like.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
I'm not saying that they're going to be in the playoffs,
but I think they're going to be the most improved
team this year, so I might have my eyes there.
So I think they're gonna make significant noise, Jamie. As
to how much, it's hard to say how much. When
you have a team like Tampa Baker, you have an
emetic bucle We just found out they have two of
their big pieces returning it's gonna be they're gonna make
(09:29):
significant noise. That's the falcons that is, it's just how
much can it get to the playoffs well?
Speaker 3 (09:34):
And it's a similar circumstance that teams have though when
a quarterback is hurt and he's coming back from injury,
or he's young and we just don't know much about him,
And that's how we feel, Isaiah about Michael Pennick Junior.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Now, he's a Washington guy.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
He went through Washington so as a lefty, as a
young guy in the league with a lot of expectation.
What did you see from him last year that makes
you like him in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 8 (09:54):
I've liked him ever since he came into the University
of Washington. One thing I like about him is he's
poised and he's super confident in what he is. When
he brings himself to the line of scrimmage, there's a
certain there's a certain command that quarterbacks have to hap
and I know a lot of times we really can't
put our finger on it, but there You've heard it
all through training camp last year with Michael Penick r.
You saw it into games. Obviously, he didn't have great
stat lines necessarily in a handful of games that he played.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
But they're raving about him.
Speaker 8 (10:18):
They're raving about not only his skill sets, his assets,
his throwing ability, his ability to control everything with that
portion of his game. But the mental aspect is huge
for me. And when you have the offensive line that
you guys are going to have. I know you talked
about the right tackle being gone, that's going to be
a huge loss for them. But when you can come
up to the line and command the line of scrimmage,
make sure that you're protected. Now, turn around, hand a
(10:38):
ball off to b John Robinson, get the ball out
to Kyle Pitts, Drake London. You have the weapons and
you have the canon. There's no throw that's off the
table for these guys, and there's no situation offensively.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
I think that they're going to be.
Speaker 8 (10:50):
In that they can't handle because they're always going to
be in a good situation with the assets that they have.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
When talking about quarterbacks, talking about Michael Pennix, every quarterback
has an attribute, and I think about Michael Pennix that
separates him from the offense last year with Kirk Cousins
is Michael Penix wants to throw that thing deep, like
he wants to throw that ball far.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Now, when you have as a defender.
Speaker 10 (11:09):
A quarterback and you're going against a quarterback that you.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Know that Darnell Mooney is flying down the field.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
You have Drake London that's down the sideline, and there's
always that threat that he's.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Going to throw that thing forty fifty yards down the field.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
As a safety, you got to back up a little bit.
So if you have those safeties back and but Jean
is back there, that's the can mouse game that I
see a lot of defenses are going to have to
play with the Atlanta Falcons heading into this year knowing
that Michael Pennix throws a really pretty ball thirty forty
fifty yards down the field, and how that can how
that can add.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
To their success.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Football is back.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
It's so close we can almost taste it and touch
it and smell it, which is a weird thing Manti
says sometimes about football. Manti, didn't I see on your
social media yesterday that in anticipation of the Notre Dame
game that they.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Were like five five days away, five busyway.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Visitor Manti Tao number.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Yeah, I wore number five, So around this time, like,
I'll get tagged in a bunch of as Manti Tao.
They yet the day before me was derome baddest day
because you're six, So they'll start to go down to
the list a little bit.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Okay, well let's play that game for third down. So
we're eight days away from NFL kickoff. Who's your favorite athlete?
It can expand if you wants, because mine would be
non at non football. Who's your favorite athlete to ever
wear number eight? As we were looking at CD and
Jalen not actually staring each other down, that's a great
photoshop looking eighty eight and one eight days to kick off, Isaiah,
(12:31):
who's your favorite athletes?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Are numbers?
Speaker 11 (12:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (12:33):
Ee?
Speaker 8 (12:33):
Contact, I mean see these night looking him in the
eye at this point.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Oh, don't look right in the eye.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
My favorite number eight? Okay.
Speaker 8 (12:41):
And I know there's a lot of great eights that
have played a lot of different sports, but mine, I'm
gonna be a homer on this one.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Okay. We just talked about Notre Dame.
Speaker 8 (12:48):
Why I went to U dub and at you dubbed
the person who rocked number eight? And I don't think
we have a picture to show and It's okay.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Napoleon Kaufman.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
Napoleon Kaufman was that dude for the University of Washington Huskies.
He went on to play in the NFL play for
the Oakland Raiders as a running back, one of the
most elive, dynamic backs before his time. The guy would
have been an absolute dog in this year's game.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
But he was fast.
Speaker 8 (13:11):
He was like a four to three guy, elusive, catch
the ball out the backfield and absolutely run past anybody
on your roster. You see the numbers, not number eight
right there, but he wore eight in college and I
love everything about it.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
That's a good one. I realized, that's the first time
I've ever heard about him, So thank you for that. Really, yeah,
that's the first time.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
I got nothing on and yeah yeah wow.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
But you know who we got a lot on is
this guy.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Like he's the greatest of all time in my opinion,
he's my favorite player to ever play basketball.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
And that's Kobe.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Like, call me Brian eight. I know he's twenty four.
We just we just we just celebrated the Kobe Bryant
Day August twenty fourth, for the eight and the twenty four.
This is a guy that h talked about the Mamba mentality.
So many athletes have been impacted by that mentality, trying
to adopt that mentality. And you know, there's there's talks
about Michael Jordan. I didn't I didn't get to see
(13:59):
Michael Jordan throughout his entire career, but this is a
guy that I got to see and it just reminiscent
of Jordan. Everybody said that he learned everything from Michael.
So if this was this was my Michael Jordan. And
I think everybody knows that when you was in elementary
school and you had that little ball in your hand
and you saw that trash can was like Kobe like
that was that was a whole movement in itself, So
(14:20):
it had to be Kobe Bean Ran.
Speaker 8 (14:22):
I like it all backboard though, no greatshirt, cash money.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
I was more of a number twenty four. I like
that with Kobe. I know mine mine goes out great technique.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
You know how was the release? Release is impeccable.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
My favorite number eight comes from early in my TV career.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
I worked in Boston for the Boston Bruins.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
And anyone who is an athlete, a longtime athlete who
also has a filmography on their Wikipedia page. Is my
favorite type and that's cam Neely, specifically cam Neely wearing
number eight for the Boston Bruins and his appearance in
one of the greatest comedy films of all time as
what is it, Seabiscuit?
Speaker 2 (15:03):
What's is the what's his name? In that Sea Bass?
Thank you?
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Yes, not the.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Sea Bass.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
I mispronounced a very famous hockey player's name.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
This is a true story and you can look it
up online.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
A very famous hockey player's name on live television once
and then I was immediately embarrassed and regretted what I
said and how I said it, and cam Neely, as
the president of the Bruins at the time, had to
come down to the studio that was sitting in and
just to how we're over me in the story?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Did you seriously just say that on TV? And I'm
so sorry. Cam Neely apologized so.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Badly, so intimidating, such a kind man, And he's my
favorite number eight because he took pity and mercy.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
On me because I did that. The fit mistakes we
make earlier in you know what I'm saying, You.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Know what I'm saying, Like one time I took a
report on television about Ian Rapsheet and it wasn't Ian
Rappaport at all in fact, and I know rap Sheet
remembers that, and it's why.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
We're friends to this day.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
And this is a tale of all of the stakes
JB has made on television. Micah Parsons rap Remember, Actually
it was hard, was it not?
Speaker 12 (16:01):
The Steve Smith torn Achilles?
Speaker 9 (16:04):
Right?
Speaker 4 (16:04):
The thing is, which was funny.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
He actually tore his kitchens.
Speaker 12 (16:09):
Yes, the story ended up being right. I just hadn't
reported it yet. It was It was kind of at
the height of fake Twitter accounts, which I believe there's
still a lot of that going on right now.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
But the story ended up being right.
Speaker 12 (16:21):
I also remember it was not your fault, and you
refuse to throw the person under the bus who's actually fault.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
It was still sat it on TV. It came out
of my mouth. I let's have some real hard hitting
journalism on MICHAEH. Parsons, shall we.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Let's do it.
Speaker 12 (16:36):
Let's talk about Michael Parsons because the clock is ticking
for the Dallas Cowboys and for Michael Parsons to get
some sort of resolution today. I believe all day is
going to be Wednesday the Cowboys play on Thursday, not
this Thursday, but the next Thursday, which means I get
a shorter window than most teams to be able to
get something done with Michael Parsons, get him on the
(16:56):
field and start the process of practicing. He has not
yet practiced the entire training camp. What he's doing right there,
which is basically kind of hang around practice, is what
he has been doing really for most of training camp,
which is not very much. He has been holding in
he's been dealing with a back injury. Now, if Micah
Parson the Cowboys were able to get to some sort
of deal, which remember Jerry Jones, the owner, tried to
(17:18):
negotiate directly with Micah Parsons against the CBA, which he
is not allowed to do. That that happened in March.
Parsons left feeling that he was Jerry Jones was trying
to take advantage of him. He eventually requests today trade
has not yet practiced unless there's some sort of resolution,
I honestly don't know. I don't know how this ends.
You know, if any player would be willing to miss
games for the right cause, Micah Parsons would be it.
(17:41):
I mean, he is principled, he is smart, he is savvy.
I don't know where the resolution comes. I just know
it really does need to happen kind of quickly if
this is going to happen for the Dallas Cowboys. One
other bit of information that I got just over the
course of the past hour Terry McLaurin, So of course
we knew he agreed to terms on a three year
(18:02):
contracts extension that happened about two days ago. I believe
finally have the Furman final numbers to give you an
idea for where it all lands for the Washington commanders,
but the actual details of the deal are for Terry mccourtan.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
It's a three year deal worth.
Speaker 12 (18:16):
Eighty seven million dollars on the extensions, that's twenty nine
million dollars per year, forty four million dollars fully guaranteed.
That converts to fifty and April of twenty twenty seven.
He has a thirty million dollars signing bonus plus incentives.
So the thirty two million dollars per year is the
max value based on the incentives. My understanding is over
the course the first two years that averages twenty eight
(18:38):
million dollars and goes up a little bit in the
third year. The team has no guarantees or commitments past
the twenty twenty six season, but mccurtin gets paid as
he has wanted.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
We're glad for him if that's what he asks for
a rap sheet then and so it will be for
the Commanders at least for their offense this season and
knowing that they have Jadan Daniels now and not a
couple years from now.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Thanks he and talk to you in a little bit.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
We have been assessing what the af SEE West coaches
happen up to in the last sixty years. Can you
believe that these four guys have been touching the game
of football? And I started back in the seventies on
Monday the eighties yesterday today. It's a look at two
different parts of the nineties, which is why my hair
today looks like sheriffrom.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Clulis well to different parts.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
Our GMTB crew is going to be split in two
different parts.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Jamie, are you ready for GMTB Gay Nights as.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
Team stand all first team?
Speaker 4 (19:29):
What is that? Man? Tuts? Okay, we're putting our drawing
skills to the test.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
I think we're gonna win Sherry because by Isaiah Jorn,
I don't know if you could talk it is medical
equipment or anatomy classroom.
Speaker 4 (19:42):
Kay, We're winning Cherry first.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
But the point is I understood in that buck in.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Football, Pith Carroll, Andy Reid, Sean Payton, and Jim Harbaugh.
For the first time in NFL history, a single division,
the AFC West, has four head coaches that have coached
in the Super Bowl. I've said it all week, that
is the least interesting part of this group of men
and their time coaching and playing in the NFL and
just around the game of football. So today we visit
(20:24):
the nineties. Shall we have been working our way through seventies, eighties, nineties,
the decades that these men have impacted the game.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
And we start in the nineties with Pete Carroll.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
He made the jump to his first coordinator job in
the early nineties, patrolling the defense for the Jets, when
in nineteen ninety four he would be promoted to his
first head coaching job in Forum Park. Now, if you're
wondering today if the man that we see now in
his seventies has really been as competitive and vivacious his
entire life, The story goes that Pete Carroll painted a
(20:53):
basketball court, lines and all in the parking lot of
the Jets facility where he would play three on three
with his assistants. So yeah, that tracks. But sometimes being
too competitive can get you into trouble. Just ask Tanya
Harding January of nineteen ninety four, the beautiful, elegant, successful
Nancy Kerrigan would be struck in the leg one month
before the Olympics, wailing why why? Tanya and Nancy cemented
(21:17):
themselves as headline fodder and serve the world a lesson
in how bad do you want it? And how sweet
does it feel to return to glory? And what does
that taste like? Speaking of how sweet things taste? In
nineteen ninety four, Andy Reid was in his third season
with the Packers as a tight ends and offensive line
coach in Green Bay, hanging amongst other Packers assistants like our.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
Guy, Steve Mariucci. Mooch tells the.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
Story that once he and Big Red went to a
place that served a forty on steak, mashed potatoes, and
a garlic stick, and if you ate all of it
inside of an hour, you got your picture on the wall,
and the meal for free. Well, Big Red ate his
in nineteen minutes and Mooch in thirty Come on, Mooch,
you got a hang tight with it with Big Red
when you're hanging out with Andy.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Those are good friends right there now.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Speaking of friends, they debuted in nineteen ninety four, and
after researching this segment sounds like six people in their
mid twenty struggling with jobs, romance, and their existence in
New York City. Does not sound nearly as entertaining as
a show.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
About NFL assistant coaches in the mid nineties. But I'm
no TV executive.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Friends with rank in the top ten shows for all
ten seasons it would air on NBC. So did anyone
tell Jim Harbaugh that life was going to go this
way in ninety four? It would in the first year,
while still playing in the NFL be a time that
Jim Harbaugh is in a coaching type role. He was
an NCAA certified unpaid assistant for.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
His dad Jack at Western Kentucky. You know I love
bringing in the Hilltoppers.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Harbaugh was considered an offensive consultant and recruiting specialist for
his dad.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Thus the epic Harbaugh recruiting stories most likely.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Began in the family garage in western Kentucky. Speaking of
things launched in the garage, that's what Jeff Bezos.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Did with Amazon.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Back in nineteen ninety four, Bezos moved to Seattle to
launch his online bookstore that would eventually become the most
powerful e commerce and tech company and the keeper of
the key for us. Now with football on Thursday Night,
and lastly, it always feels like we have a bit
of an outlier with these. Sean Payton was getting his
first job as a coordinator in nineteen ninety four, but
he was at Miami.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Of Ohio, still in college.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
However, there was plenty of college and NFL job jumping that.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Will occur with this group. That was ninety four and
all Rhodes lead West. Let's take you ninety seven.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Shall we fast forward just three years later and Sean
Payton would join this crew in the NFL on the
sidelines as the Eagles quarterback coach.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
This was his first NFL job.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Remember that young kid growing up outside of Phillies in
the Affilly in the late seventies. He's now part of
an offensive coaching staff that had John Gruden as the
coordinator and our guy Rodney Pete in.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
The quarterback room. Carroll didn't last long with the Jets, one.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Unceremonious season before he was fired and returned to his
Bay Area roots as the decordinator for the forty nine Ers.
But in ninety seven, Tide's turn in New England and
Carrol was chosen as the next head coach for the Patriots,
Bill Parcells being his predecessor. Of course, Carol would win
the AFC East in his first year, but things got
rock for Carrol after a few short seasons with the Pats,
(24:07):
which we will get to tomorrow. Speaking of rocks, the
Titanic ran into one in the form of an Iceberg
in the nineteen ninety seven film and reigned supreme as
the highest grossing film of all time until two thousand
and nine, Avatar obviously making it the biggest money maker
in ninety seven, followed by the second Drastic Park and
number three being Men in Black.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Tommy Lee and Will.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Smith formed an iconic sunglasses wearing alien fighting duo, probably
how Mooch and Andy Reid felt in Green Bay facing
the defenses in the NFC Central of that era.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Mooch had left his.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Head coaching job in San France for San Francisco in
ninety seven, and he tried to take Andy Reid with him,
but Mike Holmgren actually blocked the move for Big Red
to remain in Green Bay and be promoted to quarterbacks
coach in charge of none other than Brett Farr, an
absolute wizard at the position. Barb would lead the NFL
in passing tds that season and.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
Win his third straight MVP. The first Harry Potter.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Book was released in the UK in nineteen ninety seven.
It was actually called The Fullhilosopher's Stone originally, and it
took home almost every British Book award that year before
being published as The Sorcerer's Stone in the US.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
The premise of the stone is.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
That those who have it in their possession are immortal.
Can we think of a few players over time who
would won a Sorcerer's Stone in their possession unless you
have a secondary career already lined up, like.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Harbad did in nineteen ninety seven.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Harbad goes two to nine in his final season with
the Indianapolis Colts as they're starting quarterback, and Indianapolis would
go on to draft Peyton Manning with the first overall
pick that off season, which then officially enters us into
the Jim Harbaugh coaching chapter, which we will touch on
tomorrow when we move, ever so gracefully into.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
The two thousands.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
That is, all Roads lead West for the nineties, specifically
ninety four and ninety seven.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Back to the table in La Oh, Manton.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Figure Robo, Jamie, what a time, real time? I mean
when you talk about Titanic and men in Black? What
else happened in the nineties, Manta, Yeah, boy wasn't born
her a little bit, Jamie.
Speaker 5 (26:05):
I thought I was gonna have my little picture on
there in nineteen ninety one, guys, But I saw a
lot of different pictures. Friends, There's a lot of great things.
But ninety one, your boy was born. I thought, of
you was gonna pump me on.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
No, sorry, don't, James.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
It didn't resonate on the news Richter scale for us.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
Jeez, you know what, the nineties was awesome. You just
you touched on a lot of great points. But the
Nancy Carrigan situation, that was wild to me. But you know,
as bad as that was, I understood the level of competition.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
I'm like, really, this is real.
Speaker 8 (26:32):
Those are real emotions. She just lost herself in that moment.
But there's a lot of great things that happened in
the nineties. You did a great job.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Covering all the I didn't know that the first Harry
Potter book wasn't The Sorcers originally named The Sorcier's Stone.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
I thought it was neither, did I The Philosopher's Stone
The Philosopher. Yeah, but that was how it was published
in the UK, and then when it came over here
we apparently.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Sorcerer's Stone. Yeah, that was the nineties, James.
Speaker 3 (26:57):
The two thousands gets icy with the Stanford USC thing.
It's starting to get hard to track some of the
things that are happening, and apparently the onset of the Internet,
which has been very helpful to me and researching for
this All Roads League West Well.
Speaker 13 (27:09):
This week on Hard Knock's Head Coach Sean McDermott went
outside the world of football for some insight on leadership
from and success excuse me, from two basketball Hall of famers,
one being Vince Carter, the other Tracy McGrady.
Speaker 8 (27:23):
Knowing what really matters takes a certain kind of wisdom.
Speaker 13 (27:27):
Who better than a pair of Hole of famers to
guide you?
Speaker 7 (27:30):
It's great to be able to catch up. Appreciate you
guys and your time.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Man.
Speaker 14 (27:33):
Yeah, we're excited about this year.
Speaker 9 (27:35):
Man.
Speaker 7 (27:35):
Yeah, so we got some young guys. Man, they're gonna
need to play early and step up here for us.
Speaker 14 (27:43):
And I'll just remember as a rookie trying to figure
out the game first of all, trying to get everything
to slow down, the physicality, the speed. Like I remember
Scottie Pippen was one of the guys for me. I
got to figure this guy out because he had all
the tricks. Yeah, he had all the better moves and
liketh You don't see this and back in the day
the referees you took you shutting up and play?
Speaker 4 (28:02):
Yeah, really, you stop crying playing, are you? Guys?
Speaker 7 (28:07):
Believers in the leadership has to come from the players.
Speaker 10 (28:11):
I think you could come from the coach. Because you're
a leader is not always your best player. You come
across all kind of leaders man. I mean, I've seen
the greatest freaking power forward I've seen in my life.
To him, Duncan, I barely heard him say a few words.
It's all about his preparation, being prepared as leadership. How
(28:32):
you prepare yourself that is leadership.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
You fall in love with the preparation, the process, and
it becomes almost maniacal a little bit.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
But you need a little bit of that though.
Speaker 7 (28:43):
Yeah, with the best teams that you've been on, give
me the common threads.
Speaker 10 (28:49):
When collectively you all understand that, all right, I know
my role, everybody knows their role, and you stay within
that and don't try to play outside of that.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
You have a hell of a team.
Speaker 14 (29:02):
Yes, I feel like maybe I can do more for
this team, but that's not my role right now. The
best teams I've been on is everybody understood their role
and their willingness.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
To do it. Love that coach McGarr.
Speaker 13 (29:14):
They're getting a little bit more insight those two not
just sports fans, but remember minority owners of the Buffalo Bills,
so they are invested financially and emotionally, and talk about
some leadership. Those two combined fifteen All Star Games, nine
times all NBAS and as they said, they're off the top.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Two Hall of famers. Isaiah, I saw you nodding during that.
I mean you were feeling that.
Speaker 8 (29:35):
I was feeling everything about it. First of all the
fact that you have t mac and Vince Carter, right,
there is absolutely insane. Those two are really good players
that have done a lot for the NBA.
Speaker 4 (29:43):
Talk about the nineties, that's when those guys are calling.
Speaker 8 (29:45):
But the things that they were saying about, like dyj right,
just do your job. We hear that analogy a lot,
especially in regards to the NFL. It's important because to
Ta Max's point, Yeah, you might feel like you can
do more, but what does this particular time in your
life and this particular team in this situation, what do
they call you to do?
Speaker 4 (30:05):
Just do that thing?
Speaker 8 (30:06):
And if everybody takes that approach and ensures that your
job is being done, no different than being at this table.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
We all have a role to feel. If you feel
that role collectively as a team, you're going to take
care of your business.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
I loved how he talked about leadership, man Like, leadership
comes to preparation, you know. I mean he articulated that
the problem with leadership sometimes is leadership the best leader
isn't always your best player. And that's so real, man Like,
when you think about a team and a family dynamic
and what you're trying to build and have somebody that
you could go to and say, hey, do it like that?
Speaker 4 (30:35):
Person.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
It's always a guy that prepares himself the right way.
It's always a guy that you understand that when I
have a young cat like hey do it that he
may not be the guy that's talked about on all
the media networks, but it's a guy that does it
the right way. And I just loved how they articulated
it so well, the power of leadership and what leadership
should look like.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
And when it comes to basketball too, like you are
only as good as your weakest link, especially when it
comes to preparation. You might be able to hide something
here or there with eleven guys on one side of
the ball in football, but you got five dudes out
there on the basketball court. And if someone is not prepared,
and someone does not totally zipped up and what you're
supposed to bring to the team or what your leadership
is like, the entire team will be taken down for that.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
So just an.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Incredibly insightful moments from both of them. But also credit
to coaches when they sit down and just recognize, like
Game recognizes Game that he can listen to those two
and appreciate it and as.
Speaker 8 (31:27):
One and I would love the fans to understand what
those guys are saying too, because when you start hearing
what they're talking about in terms of your contributions to
your team and playing your role, is the reason why
you can't just type somebody's name up and look up
their stats.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (31:39):
Look, when you look at NFL players, you see, oh,
this guy played for you know, six, seven, eight, nine,
ten years. You know he only had this many catchers
as many tackles. Yeah, but what is it that you're
not seeing in that stat line That was a huge
contribution to that team.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
That's what those guys are talking about.
Speaker 8 (31:54):
Knowing what you're supposed to do and knowing your value
and making those contributions to that team.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
And the specific example of Tim Duncan, like one of
the most prolific centers of all time, and just to say,
like I never really heard speak a lot. We all
know players that could be quiet, and like for them
to be forced maybe into a more vocal role, that
could be really challenging on a team. And like if
you are trying to be outside of yourself, which is
perhaps the most talented guy on a team, but if
(32:18):
you're not the vocal leader but somebody's expecting you too,
that can be a really hard spot.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
Also, it's also detrimental to that person. Yeah, how many
times have we heard a guy who's not really vocal
and the coach is like, I need you to be
more vocal, and it just screws him up. Like, everybody
has a role, everybody has a way, and I think
the best teams they play to that and they structure
the team around those those characters.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
I think, luckily for the Bills and this circumstance, the
most talented guy on their team is a vocal leader.
So I think it is a best case scenario for
Josh Allen to be that guy, because if he was,
you know, timid or soft spoken, or some guys just.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Aren't like that personalitywise.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
Luckily for the Bills, Josh Allen is and so I
think all that advice tracks for the Bills to find
success at least in the AFC this year.
Speaker 13 (33:02):
In Good Leadership, also on coach McDermot, theyre asked if
it should come from the coaches, not just the players
out of production meeting with him covering a Bill's game,
and he was even picking the brain of Hall of
Famer James Lofton and asking how they used to do
things when he was on the bill. So coach really
is the type also to to try to take that
information and just move it forward. Yeah, it's not a competition.
(33:23):
We will hopefully see there in Buffalo. But speaking of
we're going to head outside a little drawing skills the
ultimate test for us here. But let's talk about that,
honey diplow in the net.
Speaker 3 (33:52):
Good football football is almost here, and until then, we're
going to play games because that's how we're going to
spend our time. It's called draw play and we have
words in this football Faith Bowl. Cherry and Mantai are
on a team. Team Mantis, Isaiah and I are on
a team team stand all and you're gonna.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Draw your piece of paper with your word on it.
Draw the picture, no words, no numbers.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Manti You're gonna go first, and Cherry has to guests
thirty seconds the clock, and then we're just gonna keep
going back forth.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
We win. Okay, thirty seconds.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
I know you're a good jar, So thank you, thank you?
Speaker 3 (34:24):
All right, Oh, show clock, show the camera, show the camera.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Yeah there you go. Oh no wow wow all right?
Yeah sor right, let's go challenge. I'm not can she
on my face at all she saw my face. Oh
so three o'clock. All right, my manta, you can do this. Okay,
no words or numbers.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
Cool.
Speaker 13 (34:47):
That looks like ice cream. Microphone Mike, microphone.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
Circle Mike.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
Earth.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Oh okay, planet Earth, Mike Earth, Mike. Interesting. Uh, sick too.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
That's a girl girl?
Speaker 11 (35:05):
Uh hey, Twitter, that was yeah, that was.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
You're a little squeal. You're a little squeal.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
All right, okay, me, I'm Tanta Manta.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
I couldn't stand all guy. I have to look at
it first before I show you guys.
Speaker 4 (35:35):
Mm hmmmm.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Okay, all right, here we go, Here we go.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
Ready, ready, I say, come over here, all right, let's
get it.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Get over here, all right, thirty seconds of the clock.
Speaker 4 (35:47):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Uh, oh my gosh, focus Jamie.
Speaker 4 (35:53):
I swear it, swear with it. Okay, we got circles. Yeah, yep. Okay,
that's a wagon. Okay, uh huh wagon is okay?
Speaker 8 (36:10):
Wagon?
Speaker 5 (36:11):
What does that?
Speaker 2 (36:15):
I don't know how else to do it?
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Is that gingerbread?
Speaker 2 (36:19):
I'm trying to take the time on the clock. So
he went from boomer sooner to talking Jared.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
It's a it's a clothing off wowlaughing.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
To bite him to the bears. That's a bear. I
don't know.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
Then you go from then cables going from Oklahoma to
usc Yeah, okay, I'll see.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
The path Oregon. Thank you? All right, one, okay, one's
all right, manta, all.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Right, Cherry is picking her words. She's gonna look at
me and show the camera.
Speaker 13 (37:00):
My heart is really pounding, you know, right, I really
don't like losing.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Who got here? Dear? Al right, everybody, she's got it.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
Okay, all right, man, so I lock in, alright, okay, okay,
Oh my gosh, okay, I know.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
You've got to come up with it. I know you
can do it.
Speaker 4 (37:21):
That's sound okay?
Speaker 13 (37:23):
Sorry, Oh no words football.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
That was a dot dot dot. Yeah, this is a continuation.
My god, I understand what you're doing. Oh that's actually.
Speaker 4 (37:38):
My gosh, I can't even.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
Know about you.
Speaker 4 (37:41):
The bear, no.
Speaker 15 (37:47):
Hunter, he's supposed to be catching and like it needs
a horn, Cherry.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Sorry, that was a tough one.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
Sure, hurt. By the way, we're good, we're good. Let's good.
I'm on the puppet, but we're still there. Boom a right,
turn your back.
Speaker 8 (38:09):

Speaker 4 (38:14):
Oh man, okay, oh man.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
You ready, you ready?
Speaker 4 (38:17):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah, are you ready?
Speaker 2 (38:19):

Speaker 4 (39:15):

Speaker 2 (39:21):
Only wanting nothing? Someone's got it. I know we got another.
Speaker 5 (39:24):
Let's get another point here, let's get another.
Speaker 4 (39:26):
I believe that you got that one right on. I'm good.
Speaker 13 (39:34):
Look again, like a challenge.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
Got this?
Speaker 2 (39:39):
You will be a tag.
Speaker 5 (39:40):
You don't do that?
Speaker 4 (39:40):

Speaker 2 (40:14):
That's it. You see white jeans.
Speaker 12 (40:17):

Speaker 4 (40:21):

Speaker 4 (40:35):

Speaker 3 (40:44):

Speaker 8 (40:48):

Speaker 4 (41:08):

Speaker 16 (41:11):
Go but go But she name.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
No, no, she didn't say the names wash the board?
Is he just lush it?
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Bringing them home? Breaking news, Good morning football. The Vikings
are training for their own former star wide receiver native
son of Minnesota out of feeling this her wrap sheet
in rapport and Tom Pelsara Finland we'll head back to
Minnesota after his two years with the Carolina Panthers. Carolina
