Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
A little pep in our step this morning on gmf B.
It's Wednesday, May seventh, and this is no ho home Wednesday.
This is breaking news Wednesday. A star to be traded
to the star on the helmet. I'm Jamie or at
all Isaiah standback Isaac Rochelle in Los Angeles, Kyle Brandt
in New York City. Normally we'd be worried about him
Bey and all buy himself in the studio there. But
Kyle is just in his thought and feelings about the
(00:30):
fact that George Pickens is going to go play for
the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I know, I'm with my friends the Cowboys and the Steelers,
and I'm wondering which one of those teams is more
likely to win a playoff game next year.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
We can just debate this a thousand different ways.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
I'll have some thoughts on I know Isaac Will, I
know Isaiah Will, I know Jamie Will. And my thoughts
right now are let's start the show.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
What they Good mom Football?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, that's right. This is GMFP. Welcome inside, everybody. George Pickens,
formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the star wide receiver now
traded to.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
The Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
We have been talking about this all day long and
we will continue to because whether you like it or not,
if it's great next year, it's fascinating. If it's not
so great, it's fascinating. Let's talk to Ian Rappaport about
this and how this all unfolded. He is our NFL
Network insider with us this Morning rap sheet. Jerry Jones
and company have been teasing us with trade potential and
(01:34):
now this was.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
The big one to hit the dock at this morning.
How to go down?
Speaker 6 (01:36):
Well, this has in fact been in the works for
several weeks since before the draft. The Cowboy's trying to
find a number two receiver to CD Lamb, trying to
get another big time weapon for Dak Prescott. Not a
lot of them available, and if someone is available, he'd say,
why is this player available? I would say somewhat similar
for the Pittsburgh Steelers. George Pickens has been in mainstain
in Pittsburgh for the last several years, has been unbelievably
(01:58):
productive on the field. One of the best receivers in
football just based on these statistics, but of course as
we know, George Pickens is a lot and it certainly
has been some situations for these Steelers to deal with.
Speaker 7 (02:12):
Nothing terrible, but just a lot.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
And if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, you want to make
a decision, do we lock in a player long term
or do we simply move on for draft pick compensation
and start again.
Speaker 7 (02:24):
They opt for the seconds.
Speaker 6 (02:25):
So what does that all mean? The Dallas Cowboys have
now acquired George Pickens for a third round pick. There
is also a late round pick swab a fifth rounder
in the future, going for a sixth rounder in the future.
The Cowboys get some help for Dak Prescott, and they
I would say, by low on a receiver that has
a high as a high high end talent Dallas if
(02:47):
Pickens is what they think, would have to lock them
into a long term extension, and the Steelers hope it's
auditioned by subtraction. I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers
over the course of the offseason at a receiver as well,
may not be someone as young and talented as George Pickens,
but someone who can help their offense. Both sides move
on now, believing they're in a better spot than they
(03:07):
were previously.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Raps Sheet, you mentioned that last hour, the fact that
the Steelers might not be done adding Wade receiver. But
in the category of who else is out there, I'm
just wondering who is available and would it be via
trade or just someone that's sitting around we need to
get picked up.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
Well, first of all, I would never rule out a
trade anywhere. I just don't know that there's a top
notch receiver available in a trade. But if you look
at if the free agent receivers that are available right now,
there's certainly some notable names Amari Cooper still available. You know,
these are guys who are the wrong side of thirty
but still can be productive, productive receivers. So a Marii Cooper,
(03:42):
Keenan Allen would be another one still has not found
a landing spot. DJ Chark would be another one. I'm
not saying the Steeers are going to sign them, but
that's probably the basket that they're looking at right now,
unless they want to look to a trade, which certainly
would be a possibility as well, considering they just acquired
a couple of new draft picks for this trade this morning.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Absolutely, rap Sheet, there is no wrong side of thirty.
Only if you're a wide receiver. Being in your thirties
is awesome. Okay, no judgment of being in your thirties.
Speaker 7 (04:08):
I wouldn't know.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Let's look at the Cowboys and the Steelers. Truthfully, we
spent the first to sixty minutes on this show talking
about the Cowboys and what this means for them to
add a George Pickens. But there is an interesting side
of this and what this means for the Pittsburgh Steelers
and how they navigate their offense their season and Mike
Tomlin at the helm of all of this. Moving forward, Isaiah,
which side of this trade do you find more interesting
in this moment as the man that works for the
(04:33):
Cowboys pre and post game, who was drafted by the Cowboys,
which side is more interesting to you?
Speaker 5 (04:37):
The Cowboys are the Steelers?
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I have to say the Cowboys.
Speaker 8 (04:40):
And the reason why I have to say the Cowboys
is because they have been missing this link for some
time now. Ceedee Lamb has not had a true number
two receiver or one B receiver for some time. They
brought in Brandon Cooks to be that, but he was underutilized.
The last time that Ceedee Lamb had This was obviously
when Amari Cooper we're playing together, so that's the last
time that they had a solid tandem.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
So this is exciting for them.
Speaker 8 (05:03):
You're giving George Pickens and Ceedee Lamb to one of
the better quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Nobody has questioned.
Speaker 8 (05:09):
Dak Prescott's ability to produce when healthy. The problem is
can they keep him healthy? And they've done so by
ensuring that he has protection upfront. So now that you
have protection upfront, and now that you have these two
receivers on the outside, they're.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Gonna ball out. And everybody's going to.
Speaker 8 (05:23):
Continue to bring up the fact that George Pickens has
been a problem. Right, we just heard Raps, she talked
about it right there. He's been a problem for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. But what problem has he had? He's passionate, right,
He has a little bit of a temper from time.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
To time and that kind of overflows. Well, I would
be that way too if.
Speaker 8 (05:40):
Your quarterback over the past years has been Kenny Pickett.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Mason, Rudolph mits Trubisky, Russell Wilson, and.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
Justin Field's getting getting week by week getting substituted out.
So yeah, there's gonna be some frustration there. Now he
goes to an organization that has one solid quarterback that
is the highest paid in the league and has getting
paid to do exactly what he does, and that is
be a healthy quarterback who can go out there produce
and throw the ball to the receivers and let them
get their yards after catch.
Speaker 9 (06:05):
Yeah, it's interesting because that energy that you just described
Piggins leaving is still there. So which one's more interesting?
I can't say the Cowboys because it's like that makes sense.
I'm glad that the Cowboys finally made a decision. This
is interesting the situation with the Steelers because when I
look at best case scenario for both teams right now,
I'm not looking at the Steelers thinking, oh, they're going
(06:26):
to be great Cowboys. I feel that way, and I
just feel like they're kind of sitting around waiting. They
have a lot of pieces to feel like, who is
really going to be their quarterback, Who's going to be
the guy that takes them to the next level. How
are they going to fill in some of these spots
at the skill position. Obviously you have dk Metcalf, but
you don't want to just not have a great quarterback
situation and just have DK Metcalf. I feel like they
need to fill some spots, and then just generally, like.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
I said, it's not like this roster is just jumping
out at you. Now.
Speaker 9 (06:51):
Obviously it's the NFL. Everybody's great, but I think there's
levels to it. So I think it's just interesting thinking
about what they're going to do in the coming months
and then obviously when the season starts, and.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I think I think this is far more dynamic and
fun for the Cowboys. But the word at the bottom
of the screen says interesting, I think it's way more
interesting for the Pittsburgh Steelers because leads us to the
question of where are you headed? What is the plan?
Where are we going to end up Week one in September,
Because you guys know how I feel about this. Wherever
you're headed, I'm in. I'm always in on the Steelers.
(07:26):
I will never abandon them. They don't do filler seasons,
they don't do six and eleven seasons. They will find
a way to ten and seven or nine and eight.
You know it, and I know it. I don't care
who they get rid of. And yet I still don't
know what the hell the plan is. If the plan
is for Rogers, then you just severed a huge piece
of talent with which to carry a forty one year
(07:48):
old quarterback is going to need it. If the plan's
not for Rogers, and it's some holy crap, we're actually
going with Mason Rudolph thing, which I know there are
some Steelers fans who say, screw it, let's do it.
Then you need as much talent to carry him. So
I don't know what the plan is with quarterbacks still,
just like you do.
Speaker 7 (08:03):
And just when we think couldn't.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Get weirder that the Steelers don't have a quarterback, they
get rid of one of their best receivers.
Speaker 7 (08:07):
However, I set them in.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I'm still in, and I'm in because I respect their
conviction in saying we don't want a future with this player.
And we've been around the block a few times. Anyone
who's confused or chagrined that they let go of George Pickens,
I would ask you the question during the Mike Tomlin era,
can you think of a couple of guys, especially at
wide receiver, that they have let go or moved on from,
(08:32):
who have gone on to do tremendous things in their
next stop.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
I can't.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
I can think of the other guys.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
I can think of Chase Claypool, Deontae Johnson, and certainly
Antonio Brown, who eventually, with all those cases, the Steelers said,
I think that's enough. They move on, and it's not
like they make the Steelers look terrible for moving on
with them, about how could you let go of this player?
The Steelers have a good sense of who that player
is and are.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
They a future Steeler.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
They're showing their hand right now that a guy that
they drafted and were in position to pay this year
if they wanted to know, No, we are out.
Speaker 7 (09:06):
So since we're out, what the hell, Let's hook.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Somebody who doesn't know this guy like we do, and
let's get some value. Let's get some draft picks. Let's
do all of that now. Don't tell me that they're
planning for the future. There is no future with the
Pittsburgh Steelers. It's always about the now. So this is
not a filler season in twenty twenty five that they're
gonna have draft picks next year. Blah blah blah. They
got to get those nine or ten wins this year
as they will. I'm curious as to how they're going
(09:30):
to do it, but I want it very clear. When
the playoff picking time comes out in September, I will
pick the Steelers. I don't care if George Pickens isn't
on the team anymore. They'll figure it out just right
now on May seventh, I have not no idea how.
Speaker 9 (09:43):
I have a question just for everybody, because Kyle, you
mentioned the Aaron Rodgers of it all. This situation with
Aaron Rodgers one feels like it never ends, but two,
it's really fascinating because I would think, based on everything
that he said, I'll play for twelve million dollars whatever.
I feel like if the Steelers really wanted him, he
would be there. So I'm just wondering, like, is there
(10:05):
two sides of this story where maybe the Steelers aren't
convinced that Aaron.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Rodgers is the guy or that they don't need him.
Speaker 9 (10:12):
Yeah, that they're just like, you know what, maybe Aaron
Rodgers isn't really that important to us.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
That's a totally valid question for every other player in
the league at every position.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
And then there's him.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
He's just he's an alien in that sense.
Speaker 7 (10:23):
He's different.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
And the last and only thing we've heard from him
is paraphrasing personal life, inner circle things going on in
between that football mind of his, in which he basically
was saying, if how I read it, this ain't gonna
happen for a while. I need some time. We got
to take care of some stuff. So we all thought
this was what happened for the draft, and Rogers chorus
at the end of every season is usually I'm not
(10:45):
going to make people wait. I'm going to make this
decision quickly. He's not doing any of that now, so
I just come back to this, Like the Pickens thing
is a huge part of Rogers joining the Steelers. It's
a massive piece. So did he know Did he know
when he met with the Steelers that they're like, just FYI,
George is not gonna be part of the team. We
want to making sure you know that. Or is he
hearing it now and being like, what, I'm going to
(11:07):
join it without one of the two best receivers.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
I just don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
And that's why Rogers is an exception to every other
player in the league. It's very possible the Steelers still
want him and he wants them, and he's just taking
care of his personal stuff and We're going to find
out in twenty minutes or two weeks that he's a Steeler.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Listen, Mike Tomlin is an excellent CEO type head coach.
He is a defensive minded guide though, and Arthur Smith
was there to run that offense and to establish something
that the Steelers can move forward with in.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
Years to come.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Now he understands Arthur Smith does what George Pickens is
about what he can and cannot do. Brian Schottenneimer is
new to the table as a head coach in Dallas.
He is establishing and installing an offense that is his own,
that is his identity. Knowing what we know, if at all,
about Brian Schottneimer, how do we feel that Shotty is
going to handle, manage, assess, and produce a room that
(11:59):
has Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens. Knowing his personality, Isaiah,
I want to inspect all the stuff that we see
about Pickens on the field and how shot He's going.
Speaker 5 (12:06):
To deal with us.
Speaker 8 (12:07):
Yeah, to be honest with you, some of the same
behavior that you see from George Pickens, you honestly, at
least in Dallas Country, we saw some of that with
Ceedee Lamb, early in his career, and I'm not saying grabbing,
face massing those things, but in terms of the pouting
and being disappointing and having bad body language and not
being a leader in that sense, we saw those things,
and I was very critical of Ceedee Lamb over his
(12:28):
first couple of.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Years up in Dallas over those things.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
And the last year and a half two years, we've
seen Ceedee Lamb literally mature in front of our eyes
in Dallas Cowboys Country. He stepped into that role of leadership.
He started carrying himself better. There was a scene in
one of the games where he literally was throwing his
helmet and things like that, and it looked so bad,
and the media got after him so bad in the
city of Dallas that I think that was a wake
(12:53):
up call for him. And then he started stepping up
in terms of his blocking because everybody said that he
didn't want to block, and he started taking more.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Of a leadership role in the receiver room with some of.
Speaker 8 (13:01):
The younger guys, and all of a sudden, now we
started to see him flourish into this not even just
a productive receiver, but a leader in the organization of
the Dallas Cowboys and I think bringing George Pickens into
a situation and in that receiver room with somebody who
has had to grow up himself is a perfect situation
for somebody who is of that caliber, has that talent now.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
He can be with ceedee lamb.
Speaker 8 (13:23):
He's not talking to some old man who's just barely
about to go out out the league. He's talking to
somebody who's in their prime right now who can literally
take him by them by the wings and say we
got you right, we have you. I've been there, I
know what you're feeling. This is how you go about
your business. This is how we're gonna work out of this,
and we're gonna be two of the most dangerous tandems
in this league going forward for some years to come.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (13:43):
I mean, look, this is a battle of bald distribution
and winning. If they have even bald distribution between these
two wonderful receivers and they're winning games, you're gonna have
a happy team. There's no perfect answer for this, though.
I mean we've played on these teams. I've played on
bad teams, and the receivers are the first to go.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
That's just how it goes. So they need to win
games and then.
Speaker 9 (14:03):
Obviously Prescott's got to play a phenomenal and make sure
that both of these guys are happy.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
I know, and.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
We're not going to see how this shakes out until
the fall, but I still my bottom line on this
is I think this is a really good day for
the Cowboys because there's activity, there's a dynamic injection of
energy in talent that they badly needed, and they have
a keeping up with the Joneses and their division that
to me is solid. I won't shake off that the
fact that the Steelers now lost one of their most
talented players and still don't have clarity on their quarterback
(14:30):
that we know about. I just don't know where to
land with the Steelers, and that's the one we really
need to see what Time sells about it.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Kyle, you're such a good teammate. Sometimes you just do
the work for everybody else. I'm going to steal your
question from the top of the show.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Okay, who is going to.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Win a playoff game first in this upcoming season, Isaiah?
Is it the Dallas Cowboys or is it the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 8 (14:49):
Yes, Dallas Cowboys, And I know Mike Tomlin his history, right,
Mike Tomlin always gets to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
He always puts his team in a position to be competitive.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
But the Dallas Cowboys, prior to Dak Prescott's tearing, his
hamstering of his off his buttgee, it was literally was
going to the playoffs every single year twelve and five
for three consecutive years. So these guys were doing that.
N CD Lamb did not have a true one B
receiver out there. So these guys are going to be
in a position. And I know we're talking about the
offense right now because of this trade just happened. But
this defense, I truly believe this is gonna be a
(15:18):
top five defense in the league. And when you have
a top five defense and you have an offense that
has the ability to run the ball with a solid
old line and these receivers on the outside, yeah they're
gonna be in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
And I think they're gonna win games.
Speaker 9 (15:29):
It's not every day that you can just sit around
and show the Cowboys this much love.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
So I'm gonna just marinate in it.
Speaker 9 (15:34):
I'm gonna feel it because I'm mass guys. I think
this is easy. If both teams are firing all cylinders.
Isaiah just so beautifully described it. Offense, defense, This roster
is great. If they're firing all cylinders, and the Steelers
right now are fire on all cylinders.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
This isn't no brainer.
Speaker 9 (15:49):
The Cowboys are going to be the first team to
really do something. So again, let's just take a moment
of silence and just appreciate this team.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
And what they've done.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
I like the moment of silence is like something some
kind of era has passed and we're just we're more it,
but we're actually we're celebrating it. The Steelers always get
to the playoffs, but they really never win a playoff game.
So occasionally the Cowboys win a wild card game. So
I'll go with Dallas too. If they get there, I
think they're more likely to win it. And this is
a really we have a consensus. Unless Jamie, you want
(16:19):
to zag hard and take Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
I don't think I was going to have to answer
the question.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Welcome to our world.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I'm a haha, I think it is going to be Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
I will zeg, really, I will seg.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
I will ze you got a raigning Super Bowl champion
in your division, and you've got an up and coming
quarterback and the commanders that is trying to define himself.
And don't sleep on the Giants either, and the moves
that they just did.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
So what are you looking at me for?
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Maybe the division is going to be down, but the
Cowboys have to pluck Some.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Teams say, this whole Cowboys thing is going to explode.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
It's going to be a disaster. What do you think
about that?
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Not even a little bit.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Not even a little bit, he said, all of the
hands of George Pickens. Everybody listen. Sometimes a wide receiver
can enter into your organization and make a massive impact.
I'm sure the Cowboys hope that is Piggens. We know
that is what happened for Julian Edelman when he.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
Arrived in New England.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Fans voted Edelman into the Patriots Hall of Fame. You've
seen the great clip of his father receiving the news.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Edelman is the man. We love him on the show.
And in honor of.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Jewels entering the Patriots Hall of Fame, we are going
into a top five Jewels plays of all time, Kyle Brandt.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
That's going to be great.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
We could just show the catch off the turf in
the Super Bowl five times in the twenty eight to
three game. It's one of the most miraculous plays in
NFL history. Plus, we played a new game yesterday with
a mystery guest, in fact, two mystery guests. Here's how
it works. It's Mother's Day Week. One of the NFL
players mothers will come on and we'll ask her questions
about that player, and then that player will appear. It's
(17:44):
really high stakes. You don't want to miss it. Happy
Mother's Day Week.
Speaker 10 (17:46):
Everybody, good football.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
We're going to play game. It's called NFL sty Mom.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
This is the best game we've ever had on GMFP.
Speaker 5 (18:07):
Hello, don't say me good Morday.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Is your son on offense?
Speaker 11 (18:13):
Yes?
Speaker 9 (18:13):
Do people say that your son looks like you?
Speaker 11 (18:16):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Is your son an offensive lineman? You know?
Speaker 7 (18:19):
Okay, all right, skilled position guys.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Is your son a rookie?
Speaker 10 (18:22):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (18:23):
Oh that's big.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Is your son a running back?
Speaker 11 (18:27):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (18:27):
Are you guys complaing with me taking a shot?
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Is your son's name Quinn Shawn Judkins?
Speaker 12 (18:32):
Yes, job, that was really scary.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
You knew the answers, yeah, Mom, scary for you, scary
for us.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
This is terrifying. We said this yesterday.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
We held these envelopes in our hand and it says
NFL mystery mom. Now, these are questions to interview once
we find out who this person is and who her
son is. Since Sunday is Mother's Day this week on GMFB,
as we mentioned, we're celebrating the moms that have raised
some of your favorite NFL players. So we are about
to invite a new friend onto the show. We do
not know this woman's name, we do not know her son.
(19:13):
We are going to ask her questions to find out
who this person is, and then I also believe that
her son is once again waiting in the wings. So
let's meet our mystery mom, who remains nameless at this point.
And hello, mom, how are you hello? We are great,
Thank you, so Mom. Here's how we're gonna play this.
(19:34):
We are going to ask you questions and you get
to give us one word answers, and we are going
to try our darnness to break down the identity of
your son, and then we're going to talk to him
as well.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
So let's rock and roll. I'm going to go first, Mom, Okay.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Name one color of your son's NFL team that he
plays on right now, yellow, yellow, yellow.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Okay, that's a good one. Steeler. Okay, all right, mom,
what year was your son drafted?
Speaker 11 (20:08):
Two?
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Oh, we got a rookie? All right, here we go.
Speaker 9 (20:16):
Let's what conference in college did your son play for?
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Okay? We love SEC.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Okay, so guys, we got an SEC rookie and with
my favorite clue, a yellow jersey that would tell me
stealer packer chief.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
There's not a ton of yellows. All right, yeah, commanders
for sure.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Okay, Mom, did your son attend the draft in Green Bay?
Speaker 7 (20:52):
Yes? Oh, okay, here we go.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
This is good an SEC player.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
I don't have a guess.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Anybody after the first round have a guess. We're gonna
keep going around.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Don't what? Okay, one word? What?
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (21:08):
What conference does your son play in?
Speaker 3 (21:11):
Now?
Speaker 5 (21:12):
A f C or NFCC knock?
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Are you ready? I think? So let's go all right,
I can't take a guess?
Speaker 5 (21:28):
You can?
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Is your son Matthew Golden?
Speaker 12 (21:32):
Now?
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Too early?
Speaker 7 (21:35):
Okay early?
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
Speaker 9 (21:39):
Wow now now you got us all like we're all
on our toes. Now we got our first wrong hand.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
No, I know this, I know what I can guess.
I can guess.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Oh Mom, I I I almost introduced myself to you
at the draft. I did introduce myself to your son,
because are you Baron Currell's mom?
Speaker 13 (21:59):
Yes, look at barnh my goshting.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
To you, Baron, Please, Baron, introduce your mom to us.
Speaker 11 (22:15):
Good morning. This is my beautiful mother. Y'all see Selena.
How are you doing this morning?
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Oh so good?
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Oh good man?
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Okay, Lena, Selena, this is awesome. Happy Mother's Day week
to you. This is Selena, your first Mother's day as
an NFL mom.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
What does this How has this.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Time in your life been for you? Watching Baron go
through this stuff.
Speaker 12 (22:38):
Very exciting, very exciting.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
Fun and fun.
Speaker 7 (22:42):
I'm sure, yeah, I bet well.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Listen, the story is incredible, and people watching home if
you did not keep up with this, Baron is already
a guy that we're rooting for so hard.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
First of all, Baron, I love that you're on the show.
Hook them horns, go pack, go all of that.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Okay, but listen, this is something you'll be asked about
for life. You were taken on day three of the draft.
You were there every single day from the first pick
in the green room. You stayed, you remain Roger Goodell
announced you you got the hug and everything. Why was
it important for you to be there and to stay there?
Speaker 11 (23:17):
Yeah, for me, I've been a fan of the NFL
growing up. I mean it's always been a dream. You
always see these guys, the top players walk across that stage,
and regardless of the projection and everything, I believe that
I'm a top player and I'm excited that I get
the opportunity to show that now. But just knowing that
I had the opportunity to go out there and walk
the stage and live a childhood dream, and then I
also share that with my family because they deserve it,
(23:39):
especially my mom. All of them just deserve to be
go out there and enjoy everything about this process. So
we wanted to go out there and follow my dreams
and I'm happy I did.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
So cool.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
That's awesome, miscellana.
Speaker 8 (23:51):
We need to know as a mother, we know all
moms are mama bears. Okay, And when you've been waiting
for your son to have this opportunity to get his
name called, and you're sitting there and you're watching him
have to wait, take us through the emotions that you
were experiencing having him wait, and then what did you
feel when his name was finally called.
Speaker 12 (24:10):
Okay, yes, So I mean the waiting we knew is
just that you wait. So he's worked many, many years
to get here, so that waiting was nothing for me.
It was just exciting. That day was epic, and especially
being day two expecting his name to be called but
it didn't get called. Still just feeling excited and incredibly
(24:34):
blessed to be in that situation in that room, and
having even Commissioner mister Goodell come out and kind of
encourage him and congratulate our family and tell him that
he's willing to call his name once that weight is over.
It just made it all just worked while for me,
even though sitting there in the unknown. So then we
(24:55):
come back on day three and we're just having fun.
We're taking pictures, we're hanging out in the green room.
It's us so it's like we have a staged all
to ourselves. At this moment rings and it's like he
jumps and he looks at me and I look at him.
I'm thinking, we're like the only two that heard the
phone ring. And so he's on the phone and we
(25:17):
all know what those calls look like. So there's the
phone to one ear and the plugging up the other
ear so you hear nobody except that phone. Oh my gosh,
and I'm excited and I'm watching him and the cheers
just start flowing.
Speaker 7 (25:31):
So, my goodness, this.
Speaker 12 (25:34):
Is exciting and you just can't plan for it. It's
not scripted, and so it was just so exciting. I
was very happy and just feeling good about the way
my son handled everything as a man.
Speaker 9 (25:47):
Wow, it's inspiring, honestly, And you guys might have changed
the game for the draft moving forward. I mean I
was at seventh rounder. I didn't even think about going
to the draft, But now if I had to do
it all over again, maybe I would. Let's switch gears though, Baron,
your mom just told us this beautiful story of how
she felt. You're the one waiting on the call. You're like,
who am I going to play for?
Speaker 3 (26:05):
What city? Am I gonna move?
Speaker 9 (26:06):
To walk through the emotions that you were feeling through
that process.
Speaker 11 (26:10):
Yeah, I mean, it's definitely a lot of emotions. I mean,
obviously this is something that I worked my whole life for.
So also just realizing that, you know, having to have
that perspective change that it's a blessing to even be here.
Knowing that at some point my name is going to
be called, and you know, not being eager to get
my name called first, but really just you know, trusting
in God, knowing that I'll go to the right situation.
I mean, look where you put me. It couldn't have
(26:31):
ended up any better. So just thankful that I showed
that patience, you know, and that's something that God caused
all of us to do. So thankful that everything went the.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Way it did, you know, Baron.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
The reason why we guessed Matthew Golden first, naturally is
because he had this moment in the first round and
he's a Texas guy, and he played in the SEC
and he goes to the Packers playing for a team.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
With the color yellow.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
It was all the things you get to keep playing
with your teammate at Texas. Are you and Matthew Golden
close friends? Are we going to do the rookie roommate thing?
What do we got going on at Green Bay?
Speaker 12 (27:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (27:02):
No, that's my brother and I. Obviously our time at Texas.
We just he came into last year, but we just
built the relationship just for the fact the way that
we both work. I mean, Matthew's a really hard working
throughout the week. I'm a really hard worker. And it's
funny because it sounds cliche or whatever, but we literally
rode from practice together every day on the bus and
just literally talking about our goals, talking about how things,
(27:23):
you know, want to shape out for us, and then
for us to end up at the same team, it
couldn't have turned out any better. So I'm happy that
I get to play with him, happy that I have
a brother in the same city, but also knowing that
on the field he's going to produce. So I'm excited
to watch him go out there and do what you do.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
All kinds of good energy coming off you, Baron. I mean,
it's contagious even through the screen. And speaking of that,
say Lena, before I asked the questions, why I say
you're great on TV, incredible answers. You look lovely, You're
just like it's a pleasure to have you on the show.
You are far better than some of the athlete guests
we have, and it's a thrill.
Speaker 9 (27:54):
To have you here.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
All we do.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
You have been through Baron's side. You raised them from
a baby. He is now this twenty two year old
professional football player.
Speaker 7 (28:03):
He's on television. He's going to be a lambeau Field.
The dream is all coming true.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
You did it. How do you personally feel about this?
Speaker 12 (28:11):
Well, thank you for the wonderful compliments.
Speaker 11 (28:13):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 12 (28:14):
I mean I'm just like, yeah, I mean, that's that's
my baby, right. So the world see him as a
football player, the world sees him as this strong, I
mean man, right, and I still see him as my baby.
He's always been my baby. We have a wonderful bond.
He's my youngest u to two sons. Boy mom here,
(28:36):
and so it's been fun. It's just been fun.
Speaker 11 (28:39):
Watching all of this on Bold.
Speaker 12 (28:42):
He's been dreaming of this day all of his life, literally,
and to be able to support him and take the
journey all along the way, for him to continue to
have me even when he now has saved you know,
there was a time he didn't have stayed. But now
that he does and he's still allows me to be
a part of it, I'm just incredibly blessed, excited looking
(29:05):
forward to everything that his future holds. I see it
to be very very black.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Right, Selena, We're going to need you to go on
a book tour when you come out with the Parenting
Manual because we're all parents at the table and where
you love what you.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
Got going on here.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
But Baron, I want to give you an opportunity not
to speak on the bow ties of the pictures that
we just saw, because those were fire as a man.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
But more importantly, Mother's.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Day is Sunday, and while we just listen to your
mom Selena Wax poetic about raising you into the wonderful
young man you've become, what do you want to say
to your mom on Mother's Day week?
Speaker 11 (29:36):
Yeah? I mean she she already knows. She she's living
my everything. I could never just you know, explain it,
put it in words, how thankfully I am. All I
could do is just go to work, and she encourages
me to go out there and play for harder because
I want to do so many things for her because
of what she's done for me, and just the fact
that she believed in me, you know, obviously before anybody did.
(29:58):
And you know, when you're a young kid and you're
seeing these dreams and you have all of these goals
and you're asking for things and for her to just
you know, be that constant support, you know, a year
and a year out ever since I was a little kid.
I mean, I could never be able to pay her
back for that, because you know, it takes a lot,
especially when she doesn't know how things are going to
turn out. But she believed in me, She sacrificed for me,
(30:19):
and I love it more than words can explain it.
So I'm gonna just go out here and just continue
to give back to her as best I can. And
I'm thankful that she gets to shine in his light
as well, because she deserves it.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
You are a gift to your mom, Baron, as well
as football fans, packers fans, and anyone who wants to
grow up to be a stand up person. It's Baron
Currell and it's at the hands of his mom, Selena.
Awesome to see you, guys. You are welcome anytime, both
of you. Great on television. Barn, stay healthy, come back
on good luck at Mini camp, Go pack up.
Speaker 11 (30:50):
Yes, ma'am, Thank you' all, God bless.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Earlier this week, we got into our feelings about the
Dallas Cowboys. But if you ask Kyle Brandt or lack thereof,
if you'd like to say, Cowboys made him feel nothing
because they hadn't really done anything yet. This off season,
despite teasing the fact that they had some exciting things brewing. Well,
that changed this morning when the Dallas Cowboys made a
trade for a wide receiver none other than George Pickens.
(31:13):
You've watched him in Pittsburgh and he is a young
talent with a lot of tape to unpack. Now George
Pickens is trading in that Steelers uniform and he's going
to the Dallas Cowboys for a twenty twenty seven to
six round pick from the Steelers and a twenty twenty
six third rounder pick paired late round swap. In twenty seven.
Pickens is eligible for a contract extension. He's entering the
final year of his rookie deal. Now he's going to
(31:36):
go to work with Ceedee Lamb and Dak Prescott. Speaking
of quarterbacks, Biking's quarterback JJ McCarthy the undisputed man in
Minnesota after missing his rookie season suffering a knee injury
in August of last year.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
His tight end T. J.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Hawkinson said on Green Light with Chris Long from they
Ooat House Media that he isn't worried about McCarthy's arm.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
You know, his arm talent is there.
Speaker 14 (31:58):
You know he's got a sick arm. You know, it's
you know, I remember kissing and I told him this
the other day. I said, I remember catching passes from
staff and it was one of those balls where you
know it just zips on you. You know, it looks
like it's not Yeah, it looks like it's not coming,
but it's coming, you know. And JJ's got the juice
(32:20):
behind it where you know, it kind of has that
effect where it doesn't look like it's coming. It's a
tighter spiral, but it's coming.
Speaker 11 (32:26):
You know.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
It's it's humming in the air.
Speaker 14 (32:28):
So you know, he's got He's got insane talent, arm talent,
and really the personality that he has goes really well,
and I think he's going to have a long career.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
When you start to make quarterback comparisons for a guy
we haven't seen play yet, it's almost.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
Like, careful, now, who are you going to say?
Speaker 2 (32:44):
That's a Stafford arm strength comparison right there? It's almost
like what to like catching a ball from Tom Brady.
Julian Edelman knows how that goes. He is headed into
the Patriots Hall of Fame, so that means naturally we
got a top five list of Julian Edelman moments in
honor of his induction that'll come next season next on GMM.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Good Welcome to Super Bowl forty ninety one, Ball fifty three?
Speaker 7 (33:20):
Did what number twelve?
Speaker 3 (33:22):
Number eleven?
Speaker 9 (33:23):
Julian Edelman the Iron Man Championship play?
Speaker 7 (33:28):
They don't mean none less?
Speaker 3 (33:29):
We wait and let's go.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Wading Rose downloaded for Adam and Boski if Julia Coby
for I got.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
It, I got it crazy?
Speaker 8 (33:37):
Actually one of.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
God drops backs Danson Rose to Edelman makes the catchup,
did it bro?
Speaker 3 (33:45):
I love you?
Speaker 7 (33:46):
Yeah, hell little story home, I love you you guys,
Julian EDELMANMPP.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
So many big plays in so many massive games. Julian
Edelman is going into the Patriots Hall of Fame. And
there's a lot of very good players. Then there's a
certain group of special players. Probably something special about Julian Edelman.
And part of what special bottom was his versatility. So
as we present to you five moments in Julian Edelman's career,
we curated these according to how we respect his versatility
(34:16):
and how different of a player he could be.
Speaker 7 (34:18):
From play to play.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
It was a really really cool thing going back to
his roots in college as a quarterback and then becoming
the go to guy for Tom Brady.
Speaker 7 (34:26):
So here we go.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
We're gonna do five to one, and number five is
exactly what I'm talking about. Of all the plays Julian
Edelman made, and he caught over six hundred balls in
the league, a defensive play, a tackle on offense, he
could do everything.
Speaker 7 (34:38):
Here is number five.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
We go to twenty eleven Patriots versus Eagles. You'll remember
the Eagles quarterback and you'll see if you remember this
play from Julian Edelman.
Speaker 7 (34:45):
Here's number five. We'll second and eight Young with lots
of time. All the moon inside the five too. About
the three and Julian Edelman, how about that?
Speaker 8 (34:59):
Now you'd think, wait a minute, no way, Convince Young
a really effective scrambler and an open field runner. He
can't be tackled by a wide receiver, can't he pretty
nicely done.
Speaker 9 (35:11):
We love how Julian Edelman literally does it all.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
It's actually so incredible.
Speaker 9 (35:15):
But at number four, we have a Julian Edelman touchdownd,
but not your typical receiving touchdown from the wide receiver.
Week seventeen, twenty ten against the Dolphins, Edelman is a
punt returner and takes this one to the house.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
But that deep.
Speaker 15 (35:34):
Treats about six got is one man still on stat
He's lake. Julian Edard done. Will then catch him. No
touchdown New England ninety four yours. You get Jordan Edelman,
(35:57):
that's your opportunities. He just separates great blocks down the
field and now no one's gonna catch Julian Edmond.
Speaker 11 (36:02):
When I got that Tom Brady here cut going, I
think you go, it's not a bad.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Guy to emulation.
Speaker 8 (36:08):
Oh that boy was nasty. I was there for that one,
oh man, and number three. You guys remember this play
for sure. In twenty fourteen the AFC Divisional game against
the Baltimore Ravens, Tom Brady passes the ball to Juliet Edelman,
which then turns around and throws the ball downfield to
Danny Ammindola.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
Let's check it out, Edelman in motion.
Speaker 4 (36:29):
Edelman takes the swing past.
Speaker 7 (36:30):
Edelman's gonna throw hep dol.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
Field light off in ammen Dola touch.
Speaker 7 (36:35):
Out fifty one yards. There it is the old kids
take quarterback.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
They have been keeping that one under wrapped.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
For a long time.
Speaker 14 (36:45):
That is Julian Edelman's first career attempt and one you
will not.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
Forget never flapped under pressure. Collins wereth stuck the landing
on that one.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
They had been holding it and holding it twenty fourteen
AFC Title game for him to have his first passing
touchdown casual. All your games before Super Bowl, those are cute.
At number two, it's Super Bowl forty nine. You all
remember this one.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
It's Patriots Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
It was a tie game at the half. It was
neck and neck down the stretch, and everyone hyper fixates
on what the Seahawks should or should not have done
on the final goalline play for them. However, what gave
the Patriots the lead just before the two minute warning
in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl forty nine was
a Julian Edelman moment.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Rady caught touchdown, Julian Edelman came back to it al
it came right back to it, worked brilliantly before Brady
missed the.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
Pass, come right back to it, and Edelman gets it done.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
And then, of course we get to the granddaddy of
them all, the play that will be showed for the
rest of Julian's life and his killed kids' lives and
everything and everything for decades and decades. Super Bowl fifty one,
twenty eight to three comeback. It's in the midst of happening,
kind of in slow motion. We can't believe what we're seeing.
And then Julian Edelman makes a play centimeters off the
turf and starts screaming, I caught it.
Speaker 7 (38:01):
I caught it, And sure enough he caught it.
Speaker 1 (38:03):
The most memorable play Julian Edelman's career, really, anybody's career.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
Roll it.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Here's Adelman broken up and the pass is no sign
yet Adelman comes down with a football.
Speaker 7 (38:15):
They're saying it's a catch. Oh, that's a catch. I'm like, God,
that's incredible.
Speaker 8 (38:20):
That's amazing concentration by Julian Edelman.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
After review, the ruling on the field is confirmed.
Speaker 7 (38:27):
The receivers hands.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
Under the ball, the ball never hits the ground.
Speaker 7 (38:31):
Incredible, It was incredible.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
It was one of those that when you finally saw
the replay, all of us at home we're saying with
Joe and Troy, were.
Speaker 7 (38:39):
Incredible, Wow, he did it.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
And then they go on to finish and he went
on to finish an incredible, incredible career. Again, I keep
saying that word, and that's him. Two hundred and thirty
second pick in the seventh round out of Ken State
via San Mateo. This dude from Central Cali who stands
about five to ten and became one of the signature
pieces of the Tom Brady, Bill Belichick dynasty. It's why
we love the NFL. It's dreams come true. It's amazing.
(39:02):
And Julian Edelman, it's great to have.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
You on like this.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
Guys in LA.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
What do you think.
Speaker 8 (39:06):
Yeah, I can tell you, guys from this experience. I
got to New England. I got cut by the Dallas
Cowboys in after two thousand and eight seasons. So my
first year going to New England was in two thousand
and nine, which was Julian Edelman's rookie season, so he
had just got drafted. I show up in the quarterback
room and I'm in the receiver room, and I could
tell you that I am beyond proud of what Julian
was able to do with his career because I know
(39:28):
what he went through as a rookie. He put the
work in, he showed up, he was in the meeting rooms,
he got scolded all the time by the coaches.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
He did the hard stuff and.
Speaker 8 (39:38):
Put it in the work that nobody saw, but you
saw the production of it on the field.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
So congratulations to jewels Man. You put the work in it,
and I'm proud of you.
Speaker 9 (39:45):
Yeah, I just love I love a football player, right,
Like he checks a lot of football player boxes where
you could really throw this guy anywhere, and it's super
rare to see it down in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
Travis Hunter might be the next one to do it
like he did it.
Speaker 9 (39:58):
But what I love about watching all these plays is
I was I was a kid when I was watching
these right. This is my middle, high school, and even
college years, so it brings back so many good memories.
And even this Super Bowl, this number one play, Like
even listening to the sounds and just watching it, Jamie,
you were like, You're just looking for the ball to
touch the ground.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
It never does.
Speaker 9 (40:15):
It just does something to you, and that's why I
just love it for football.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Yeah, the brilliance of Bill Belichick to go out and
take this young man out of Kent State in a
late round and turn him into what you said, Travis Hunter,
that's a number two overall pick. No one would have
thought that this is what this guy could have done
in college with what he came from. But it's a
testament to who Brady was, who Belichick was, and to
Isaiah's point, the work that Edelman put in to become.
Speaker 5 (40:39):
That it recreated.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
I think the creativity that you could have with just
a straight up athlete. Kyle Jewles, congratulations, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
And it goes back.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
He's listen, you made the team as a seventh round
pick because he returned to punt for a touchdown in
a preseason game and Belichick said, I got to have
that guy. It was a classic moment. And here we
are these years later going to the Patriots Hall of Fame.
Is the three time Super Bowl champ. He's a Super
Bowl MVP, and it's an incredible career.
Speaker 7 (41:04):
It's great to look back on it.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
George Pickens to Dallas, paging George Pickens to Dallas, Pittsburgh
Steelers trading a wide receiver from the Steelers to the Cowboys.
A couple of draft picks involved in this conversation as well.
Speaker 5 (41:19):
And George Pickens is due for a contract.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
He's entering the final year, so the Cowboys are going
to have to put that on their plate as.
Speaker 5 (41:24):
Well as other conversations.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
We actually started this week on the show talking about
the Cowboys in the capacity that Brian Schottenheimer made everybody
in the locker room stand up and reset where their
locker room cubbies are and.
Speaker 5 (41:35):
Then sit back down. George Pickens, who are going to
be sitting next to in that locker room.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
You're going to set yourself between Dak and Mike up.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
What's going to happen there?
Speaker 2 (41:41):
Final thoughts on the trade that sends Pickens to Dallas Listen.
Speaker 8 (41:44):
I don't know where he's going to be sitting at,
but I can definitely tell you, guys that teams that
are going to be facing the Dallas Cowboys are going
to have to start making some business decisions Because you
want a double CD Lamb or do you want to
go out there and double George Pickens?
Speaker 7 (41:56):
Do you want to man up one of these guys?
Speaker 3 (41:58):
I highly doubt it. Either way, y'all got to figure
it out.
Speaker 9 (42:01):
All I'll say is, Cowboy fans, take a breath. Today
can be a good day where you can enjoy your coffee.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
You don't have to be mad going to work, just
enjoy the day.
Speaker 9 (42:08):
Congrats Cowboys fans.
Speaker 1 (42:10):
I'm in on that too, And I would say to
the Steelers fans. First of all, Gabe Davis just got
cut by the Jaguars after signing a big deal with
them last year.
Speaker 7 (42:17):
Go maybe call his reps.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
And the skeptic in me says that Rogers made sure
that Pickens left so he can make a spot for
Alan Lazard or Randall Cobb on the team.
Speaker 7 (42:25):
But we'll get well if gunpacked.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
That week's moving forward and right now, great job, Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Twenty seconds left in the show, and Kyle's just conspiracy theory.
Speaker 5 (42:34):
That's the entire way.
Speaker 7 (42:35):
Tell me I'm wrong.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
It will give us conversations for quite some time on GMFB.
Happy Wednesday, everybody. We love a breaking news day. Pickens,
you're going to Dallas Cowboys fans pre joye.
Speaker 5 (42:47):
DA's happy
