Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
What's up everybody. Welcome to move the sticks and happy
game week. We we have NFL games coming up within
mere hours here boys, we got right back on the show.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Buck Uh?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I mean, is he wearing Indiana gear? I don't know.
Can you spend? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (00:23):
He is?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
I thought, so come on fucking to North Carolina gear today? Huh?
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Man commuted much like their offense.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
We got.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
It's a marathon marathon. I mean, Bill.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Belier, it might be a marathon, but that was a
track meet that I watched on TV of the night.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
It wasn't It wasn't. It was a track meet. We
haven't had preseason games. There was Week one a preseason
It doesn't it doesn't look like doesn't look like that.
The next week we played Charlotte, did we play Richmond?
So by the time Clemson rose intown? Will you ready
for the regular season?
Speaker 6 (01:05):
By the way, TCU football has been going off on
X by the way they responded to a post from
u NC that is announcing that Hulu thing that's going
to be following Belichick and the football team throughout the season.
I guess and TCU football quote posted when's the first
(01:28):
episode dropped? Oh, there's a couple more in there too.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I take it shots, yeah, Buck can I.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
By the way, we're gonna do some We're gonna do
some college football today and then we're gonna get to
our rookie draft, our first rookie draft of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
So we do that every year. We pick some rookies.
We keep track of the totals.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
It's like basically fantasy football, just for rookies, and we
do this every week and we tallied up as we
go throughout the year. So we'll get to that in
just a little bit. But on the college football side
of things, Buck, we're going to move on from Carolina soon,
so you'll be out of your misery. But I did
have one thought that I wanted to get your take on.
And rhet hop in here too. Is someone who's meeting
with coaches all the time doing the stuff you're doing
(02:08):
for the Big Ten network. I hear all the time,
and it was even and even I talked to Clad
about it a little bit, because you know, Matt Patricia, there
was a lot of NFL to that defense at Ohio
State running and we think about the complexity of a
NFL defense. And we talk all the time when NFL
guys come to college how complex it is, But Buck,
what I don't hear is what a challenge it is
(02:31):
when you think about the diversity of offenses in college
that you don't see in the NFL. Like there's more
stuff to prepare for in a college game defensively than
for an NFL game.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
And there's literally.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Like it's like a Petri dish, like they're experimenting on
a weekly basis at the college level.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
No, I think the thing for an NFL guy, and
I'll say for Belichick in particular, is someone who loves
to kind of mix and matches coverages based on the
opponent each week week. You don't have enough time to
have a large playbook. You just don't have enough time
to get good at being able to play cover four,
cover three, cover two, match coverage, all these other things
(03:11):
that you've been able to do in the pros. And
you also don't have the depth of knowledge amongst the.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Players to be able to do it.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
So you think about those great New England teams that
had the veteran players that could finish each other's sentences,
and that it played for a long time. When you
have a Rodney Harrison and Willie McGinnis and say out
when all these guys that have played for a long time,
you can do some things on the flot. What you
can do with college guys, particularly transfer porter guys, is
everyone has a different level of experience and expertise, so
(03:39):
you kind of have to piece mill it. I will say,
getting off Belichick and talking about Patricia, what he did
against Texas was nothing short of brilliant.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And the trick though, is he had a lot of
time to prepare for Texas.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
What is that like when now you have a week turnaround,
like you go Oregon, Den, Penn State or whatever. But
against Texas he had the entire offseason, preseason to put
in a game plan for Arch Manning and the Longborns.
Speaker 6 (04:05):
Yeah, I would say that's your You're spot on there
as well.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
The thing that I've noticed is how.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
How teams will adapt to star players, right, I mean,
like it was it was clear, you know when I
was doing this USC you know, Missouri State game, and
then look, when you get a different.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Level of competition, it's a little bit tough to gauge.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
Too, but you know, they are so worried about getting
beat on chunk plays, right, especially with guys like Jakobe
Lane and Makay Lemon, who you know, Missouri State had
the misfortune of dealing with in this game.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
It's like they they wanted to play.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
As much cover for as they possibly could too over
the top and let's just keep everything in front of
us as much as possible, which allowed, you know, sc
to run the heck out of the football. One thing
I've been following is our next week. This week's game
for US is Penn State. Penn State is dealing with
a lot of five down fronts, which you know is
(05:06):
something I don't know that we talk about a ton, right,
And I think in college, you know, we see a
ton of the four two five stuff, right, We're starting
to see a little bit more that three three five.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
Well, but with you know, Kate tron Allen and Nick
Singleton and that you know, potent run game of Penn State,
really good offensive line by the way, they feel like
they have ten starter caliber players on their team in
terms of offensive lineman. They're seeing a bunch of five
down fronts to try to slow things down in the
run game. So yeah, I think, you know, some of
(05:37):
those trends are always interesting to see develop in the
college ranks and then make their way to the lead.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
I think what's interesting about the five man fronts. That's
been a thing the last couple of years. In fact,
Illinois was really heavy with the bear front when Bill
mud just came over from the Giants or Patriots and
Giants or whatever, and he brought some of that and
part of the advantages of the down front as you
create one on one matchups all across the board, and
(06:03):
so when you have that five oh look and you
get man o man protection, if you start adding some
games inside those three man games with the two tackles
in the nose, it's very advantageous and we're seeing it
even at the pro level.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
The penny front is what people are calling it.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Like even Brandon Staley and those guys were using those
things to clog up the run game but also give
you some of these soft coverage in the past. So
it's been a very effective thing. So it's some of
the trickle down trickle up the factor that you have
when you have coaches that are kind of living in
both worlds.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
On the arch manning stuff like we'll get into that buck.
But the you know, I didn't I do that first
look series over the summer, and he was on the
list that he was the last one I had to do,
and I didn't end up doing him. I just didn't
feel I had enough good tape that I wanted to
put a strong opinion out there one way or the other.
(06:59):
I just it was income and I just hadn't seen enough,
and I thought it would be unfair to do it.
So I was curious. I wanted to see what it
looked like. Now you mentioned Patricia a beautiful game plan.
I couldn't help but watch but think while watching that
game of Peyton's struggles against Belichick and thinking like, this
is a derivative of that, Like he looked down the
family tree really for both with Patricia, his ties obviously
(07:19):
a connection to Belichick. So that was kind of going
through my mind. And all the pictures changing. I didn't
think he really trusted his eyes at all. But I'm
curious to see and I'm not making excuses for him.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Every time.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
You guys notice every time they showed him on the sideline,
how he was just like adjusting his shoulders the whole time,
and everything, I'm like, is this dude hurt?
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Like?
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Is this something?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
And then like some of the unnatural armslots he was
thrown from which looks so easy this summer, that was
weird looking. Yeah, I mean even the first play where
they're on the move, he looks so rigid and tight
and stiff and misses a throw by ten yards and
you know, so anyways, I'm not going to read too
much into it. I know everybody that's going to be
a fun fodder for everybody to, you know, take their
(08:01):
shots and do this out or the other. But I
didn't see enough to go strong on them before the
season started. I'm not going to bury him off of
one start. But my takeaway was two things. I don't
think he trusted his eyes and that was Patricia's doing.
And then I just didn't That didn't look right, man.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
No, it didn't look right. And it's unfortunate for him.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
And I'm gonna say this, like he can't control the
hype machine that is around him. Right when you have
that last name and you have the success that the
family has had at quarterback, naturally he has been put
on a pedestal before he's even really played a game.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And it's not fair.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
But in our business, when it's about the clicks and eyeballs,
it's easy to sell him as what we were selling
them prior to the game. It's unfortunate, though, that a
guy that came into the game with ninety five career
pass attempts was expected to be like a number one
type pick right out the gate. And no one there
has never been a quarterback that has taken the league
(08:58):
by stormer or the football war roll by storm without experience.
And so the long play on this is, let's see
how he continues to get better at these marketing points.
What does he look like midseason? What does he look
like end of season? What does he look like in
the postseason. The one thing that I have a lot
of trust and belief in one, he's gonna work his
tail off, but two so I can figure it out.
(09:19):
He'll figure out whether they need to lean more into
Manning or more into the running game, but he'll make
it where this offense rolls and arch Manning will end
up looking good.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
Regardless, I would say that there is no one more
equipped to deal with all of the not meeting the hype,
not meeting expectation, not the next Manning type of conversation
than arch Manning just being around in like he just.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Doesn't care about that stuff.
Speaker 6 (09:53):
Like he cares about his teammates, he loves Paul, he
cares about being, you know, a student at the.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
University of Texas. Like there's just.
Speaker 6 (10:01):
He's going to be fine from a mental standpoint, like
in dealing with all the stuff that's happening now, right
just as he was with all the stuff that was
happening before. Now he needs to play them all the stuff,
the mechanical stuff that you know we saw out there
that looked just a little bit off.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Now again watching him this summer, you know, I was.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
Like that, that looks totally different. Didn't see it now,
Sure you got guys in your face. It's a lot
different than throwing shorts and T shirts. I think that's
that's obviously a lesson for all of us as well.
But he looked really good mechanically when when I caught
up with him this summer, I know there was some actual,
you know, reality to the conversation that it was a
(10:40):
tough camp. It was a tough camp for by the way,
Texans a pretty dang good defense too. Now, Like so
I think going up against those guys you know for
three four weeks leading into this game, you know, was
was was probably pretty difficult too, Probably not as difficult
as dealing with what he saw in the Horseshoe on Saturday.
But again, like you said, DJ, not ready to you know,
(11:04):
none of us here we're talking about this kid as
being the number one pick because none of us really
believe he's actually.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Going to come out in this year's draft.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
So like, why would we why would we say now
he's not going to after one game, Like, let's let's
give it some time. I can only imagine how difficult
it was, Like seeing a Matt Patricia defense in Week
ten was going to be difficult for any player, in
any quarterback, especially one in his first year starting seeing
a week one with no college tape to actually assess
(11:35):
what that was going to look like. Immeasurably difficult. Now
he's going to have to deal with those situations better.
But I still thought, you know, like the touchdown throw
was more along the lines of what you would expect
from him. But yeah, the one hopper, you know, five
yards in front of the intended receiver on the first
attempt was like, look, weird and look, I bet it
(11:57):
was a little uncomfortable in a lot of ways. Like,
I bet it felt a little bit different, you know,
on game day. So let's let's see what it looks
like here we two before we get crazy.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yeah, I will say this on you know, as we
go outside that game, watching the guys over the summer,
and we all talked about this, but I, you know,
going to the tape of these other three quarterbacks, I
thought it was clear, the clear lines between them. It
was Leonora's Sellers, it was then nus Meyer. The gap
a pretty good gap. Then nus Meyer, then club Nick
(12:30):
like was kind of a distant third from me. And again,
not going to overreact on the good side of this
thing either, Buck, but Laura Sellers is a grown freaking
man now, And that that's what you think of when
you think of a top tier prospect, someone who has
the traits and tools you can dream on, and then
obviously the stuff we have relationships and you find out
that he's incredibly intelligent and incredibly hard working and a
(12:50):
good teammate and all that stuff checks out. That was
a good first uh first key ball game for him,
And I thought Nussmeyer clearly outplayed played club.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Nick.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
I thought that slot that order thing exactly the same.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Yeah, No, I think the thing about like Leonoris Sellers,
And we've talked about this when it comes to evaluating
quarterbacks and those things, and some people will kind of
point out, oh, what about Anthony Richardson the tools matter
at the top of the board, like, because what we're
doing at the top of the draft is you should
be envisioning this quarterback competing.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
With the likes of the Mount Rushmore.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
What does he look like versus Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen,
Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow if we're getting a shootout, does
he have the tools to have a legitimate chance to
compete in that regard? And so when you look at
Lenora's Sellers and you talk about superpowers, how many superpowers?
How many tools does he have on the tool belt
when we get into these shootouts, Leonora Sellers has that
(13:44):
do some of these other quarterbacks possess those kinds of
skills and tools and capabilities as we're projecting what they
could look like at the next level.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
Yeah, you know, I thought, you know, Leonora's Sellers was
as advertised as you.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Guys mentioned but Garrettsmeyer, I mean, what was the thing.
Speaker 6 (14:03):
You remember what I told you when I watched him
in person, DJ was right around the time that you
were you were going through your series.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
This dude is everybody gravitates toward him with that too.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
And he is a technician, right like, he is fundamentally sound.
He is a coaches kid. He is going to have
everything buttoned up on that front. And that's what that
looked like to me, a guy that was not going
to let the atmosphere there the.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Other death Valley.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
You know, the fact that Club Nick's on the other
side affect who he is and who he wants to
be and the way he wants to play. That was
just really really impressive to me, the way he handled
all of that. And Yeah, I think I think that's
one thing that this game did prove to us that
that I kind of felt in the summer was that
I'd have No Smyer ahead of Club Nick at this point.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Yeah, I thought that was pretty clear.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yeah, I mean, look, I think that that is good.
I think the only thing that.
Speaker 5 (14:55):
People have to get used to with Nusmyer is just like,
because people will talk about the size thing and it
is Yeah, it hasn't been as much of a factor
of late because we've seen look, Bryce Young win number
one overall, and I'm not saying that Nuts is in
that category, but we've kind of gone away from like
the physical statue being a big part of it. But
there's no doubt Mannusmyers spends it. And I think when
(15:16):
I wrote a report about him in the summer's just
talking about a guy who operates with a gunslinger's mentality
but has surgical precision, Like he has that ability to
kind of play the game on an off script, but
he can deliver dime after dime after diamond. I'll say
this wasn't even a vintage game for him. We'll see
better games that kind of put a stamp on what
he could be at the next level. It was a
(15:37):
nice start. And then for Glum, like the thing about
like Clemson in their passing game and him always felt
like he was solid. But to me, he still feels
more like a point guard than a scoring guard. He
can operate the machinery and do the stuff. I don't
know if he has a take over the game potential
(15:58):
take over the game traits. And when we're talking about quarterbacks,
at the top. Normally they exhibit those traits where they
can take over the game and kind of put the
team on their back with their talents.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Uh just pulled it up.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
By the way, neuss Meyer in the spring officially measured
six oh five two oh four. So yeah, I mean
buck to the to the size argument there not, you know,
not the biggest guy in the world there. But I
think he he's efficient, he's accurate, he's tough, he's smart,
all that stuff. He checks a lot of those boxes.
And they're gonna play a lot of meaningful games. LSU
(16:31):
is gonna be good. If their defense is just solid,
they're gonna they're gonna be in some very big stage
games and he'll have a chance to, uh to really
make a name for himself there. So anyways, that was
my kind of college football thoughts. Boys, Let's let's take
a quick pause. Let's come back. Let's knock out this
rookie draft, which, by the way, I'm being told I
have the first pick. I'll tell you why right after this.
(16:55):
So I guess Commissioner Gavin just uh lobbing me the
first pick. Here the way this the way this works.
We normally will do a quarterback, a you know, pass catcher,
be it, a tight end, a receiver, and a running back. Well,
we don't have enough Ricky quarterbacks at this point in
time of the season to incorporate them into Ricky draft.
So we're gonna just go one tight end, one receiver,
(17:16):
one running back. All right, you got to fill those
three slots. I'm gonna go ahead and kick us off here.
I'm gonna go ahead and take my running back.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
Running back, one receiver. That's that's okay, one tight end. Good,
three guys. There's enough tight ends. There's good tight ends
to go around. Are they attempted to go to the tight
end with my first pick?
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Yeah? No, you're not like you.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
I won't.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
All right, my my my first pick. I'm going to
go volume here, and I'm going to go asking gent
the first peck that they're going to try and get
him loose a little bit in this opener. So, uh, Buck,
I'm being told you, uh yeah, Bucky has a second pick.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Go ahead, Buck, Oh okay, what else? That's cool.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
I appreciate the second pick, but uh, I'm struggling. So
I am going to take give me t mac give
me Ted McMillan because he's gonna be the number one
receiver for the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
And that's tough because going against my Jaguars. But I'm
going with t Mac.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
I'm gonna say that's gonna be the number one receiver.
It was a little little uh there.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
We'll see. We'll see after one week.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Boy looks like, yeah, give me Tyler Warren. Boys, let me.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Just go over over Loveland.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
Huh over Loveland. Indeed, indeed, give me Tyler.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Warren and you get to you get to go twice here, get.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
To go twice. So give me Marion Hampton.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
That was like that, that's easy. That means I don't
have to worry about dad. So didn't give me Coaston
Loveland at tight end. It'll be my tight end.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Killing me.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
How about killing you?
Speaker 4 (18:46):
You could have picked him.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
For Chrisas No.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
I got gent, but I was hoping that Loveland would
make it back to me. I gotta go, So I
gotta go with the tight end and a receiver here. Yep,
So I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go Elijah Royo with
my with my pick.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
Wow, Wow, that's what we're doing.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
I'm gonna do that and then uh let's go with
the wide receiver of choice here. Oh, I'm gonna give
me a Mecca BOOKA. That's gonna be He's polished, ready
to go.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
That's a good one.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
So Buck, you got your last pick here.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Let's go Travian Henderson.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
Oh, good one.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Wet almost have a little tinge of regret in your.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
Networks, Lewis attention to the roster.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
Let's go Matthew Golden.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Ah, all right, I just.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
Wanted to know that I'm officially mad at Matthew Golden.
Matthew Golden, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Shed the double deuce. He was going with the double duce.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
He she had my number.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
I know he's wearing that for me to go to zero.
I don't really appreciate that. I wish I like.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I like the double deuce.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
What a great number? Book all right, So here it is.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
I've got Ash and Genty, I've got Elijah Royo surprise
pick of the draft, and a Mecca Buca. Bucky is
rolling out tedaroa he does not like Teed Colston Loveland,
Travon Henderson, a pick that Rhett was a little envious of.
Rhett rolls out Tyler Warren and Marion Hampton and Matthew Golden.
Three guys. Gosh, I had high grades on all three
of those guys. If I was giving out like the
(20:26):
draft grades based off of my pre draft grades, well.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
There we go. There's a little rookie draft for you.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
So you're doing this like this.
Speaker 6 (20:35):
If these if these tight ends stay active like it's
I'll get.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Some new tight end names. I think some of these
receivers are gonna end up popping. Yeah, I need a
Tory Horton pick at some.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Times, but I was like, let's not. Let's not go crazy.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
I mean, I don't think I don't think I could
go with a Royo and Tory Horton is fourth and
fifth options on this team.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
I don't think I can do that at this point
in time.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
All Right, this was a fun one. We've got a
little college talk in there. I got a rookie draft.
We have a few more episodes coming up this week.
We're going to preview these games. We've got two huge
games Thursday Friday Dallas Philly Casey Chargers. We will preview
that on the next episode, and then we'll have a
little Week one look ahead as well later on in
the week.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
So we appreciate you. Guys.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Again, a little bit shorter episode today, but we want
you to be able to get that.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
You know, this is not a three mile run podcast today.
This is it's just too a comfortable movie.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Well yeah, not manny, all right, we'll see you next time,
right here on with the sticks
