Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now Move the Sticks with Daniel, Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
What's up everybody? Happy Thanksgiving from myself and Bucky Brooks
as we kick off another Thanksgiving Day version of Move
to six Buck. How you doing, man, Man, I'm great, DJ.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
I love the time of year, Like we talked about
it on one of the last bots, about just family
coming together, being able to kind of reflect and count
all the blessings that you've had. Sometimes life is so
chaotic we don't appreciate all the things that have kind
of come our way.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
So this is a great time for reflection. Yeah, I
think that's where we start. Man. We'll get into these
Thanksgiving games and the Black Friday Game, which is a
fun slate of games, and preview those in just a minute.
But I do think it is important, and not just
on Thanksgiving, but at all times. I think a grateful
hearts to happy heart, and I know the two of
us have so much to be thankful for. I don't
know what the number is now, Buck, I know we're
(00:54):
over a thousand, right, didn't we celebrate our one thousand
not long ago? So we been doing the show for
over a decade and we've been friends for over twenty years,
and yeah, it's a pinch. We have a pinch me
life that we get to do this, you know, five
days a week, and somehow they're paying us for this
whole thing.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
It is kind of crazy when you think about it, right,
Like you kind of think about like how life takes
to twist and turns and kind of push you in
a position to do these things, Like what can be
better than talking to talking ball all day every day
and being able to do it with people that you're
close to, people that you have a ton of respect with,
not just you, but think about all the others who
are part of the Move to Sticks team behind the scenes.
You think about Rhett and Lance and so many other
(01:34):
guys that pop on. It's really been a great ride.
And when you look at the landscape speaks volumes to
our connection but also the help of so many of us,
so many of the people around us, to make sure
this thing is always going.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, I think about the thousands and thousands of shows
that have come and gone, daring our run here and
to be able to still be doing it with the
you know, with the same partner and Buck and then
we've had a whole host of producers. Gavin's the latest
has done a great job. They've all got onto bigger
and better. I mean, he's been a nice little launching.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Cut for a lot of when you when you when
you bring that up, it makes you think about Sully
and Jodi Kant.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, jonahsy So I think about him. I think about
TD who's going on to do great things. Yeah, with
wasteports and entertainment.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
I think about all the other people that have kind
of popped in and done different things, and the field
has gone on and done and stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
It's just so many was involved for a little bit,
a lot of different guys, man, but it's been it's
been fun and in terms of things that we're thankful for,
you know what, I'm thankful you mentioned this the other day,
but I uh, I knocked out a couple guys this
morning on the draft and buck I kind of the
reason I like doing it this week. I know some
(02:49):
people say, like, you can be doing draft year round.
I like taking a little bit of a break and
then you jump into it and it's like I forgot
how much I love doing this. Man. Like, of all
the stuff that we enjoyed about the scouting process, from
our scouting career in the NFL to me, but none
of it involved getting in a car and driving. None
of it involved getting character background on players. What I
(03:12):
enjoyed was I enjoyed watching the tape and talking about
the players. And that's what we get to do, man.
And now we're starting to jump in on that side
of it, which is really fun.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
This is the fun part of it, right Like so
scouting for a team and tell so much stuff, like
you talk about the travel, the background, all the other
things that to do to put together the complete profile.
Right now we get to parachute in and do the
fun part of the job, which is looking at the
tape and beginning to project and imagine how these players
are going to play at the next level. And then
(03:40):
from a team building perspective, we went from working for
one team to being able to think about thirty two
different teams and how thirty two different teams can put
the pieces of the puzzle together and have winning formulas.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
And some of their ways or their approaches are.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Vastly different, but it doesn't mean you can't get to
the same destination.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
So I love that.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
I think both of us are critical thinkers with growth
mindsets where we like hearing about the new things.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
That are coming down the pipeline.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
When it comes to discounting business, and I'll say this, DJ, like,
one thing is to do it. Another thing is to
have so many young people that come to you and
ask how to get in and to be able to share.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I think that's what it's about.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
It's about giving back because I know when you and
I were both young scouts, we had older scouts.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
That they gave us.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
So I feel it's my duty to give back to
those uh, those new guys because I hope that they
pay it for it as well.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
No doubt I. By the way, this is a longer
discussion for another day. But I don't know if you've
seen this over the last week, but Adam Grant, who's
written some incredible books that you know I've enjoyed reading
over the years, including Hidden Potential, which is one of
my favorites. Think again, it is a good one. But
he's fantastic, and he is on this kick right now
(04:57):
talking about the need to remove laptops from classroom and
all these experiments that show you learn more and get
better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's
not just because they're less distracted. Writing enables deeper processing
and more images. Depend is truly mightier than the keyboard.
And I was thinking about that, and I'm like, we
were just talking about this the other day. How when
(05:17):
we're watching, we're taking notes and notebooks and filling them up.
And man, maybe I know, like from a teaching standpoint
and coaching standpoint, now we're doing all the visual stuff
for these guys to see and learn. But man, I
still think if I was involved in on the scouting
side of things, I still like to have a notebook
in the player in our scouts hands well one ndred
(05:37):
percent of DJ I still believe in that.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
In fact, you know, the journey to the media world
came from a love of writing that developed during the
scouting process. Like didn't really write a ton until you
start scouting and you realize that, whoa, we got to
do a lot of writing. You have to put it together.
You have to learn how to make the words come
to life, and then taking the adventure first as a
writer and then into this media world.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
It's the basis of very And I would tell young scouts, man,
you really need.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
To master that skill, because the better you write the
better you're going to present it all.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Is, but the writing is the foundation.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
So if you can master that part of it, not
only with your note taking but in your report writing,
it's only going to make you better when it comes
time to stand in front of the room, to be
able to argue your points, to be able to talk.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
About players and how they're going to project in those things.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
I just think it's such an effective tool to teach
you to be an A plus communicator.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yeah, no doubt. And again, like when you actually do
the report for the team, if you need to do that,
and we talked about the Jags and you want to
do emojis and bullet points those things, that's all good.
But to me, when you're watching players, I still think
there's value in writing it down. I think you're going
to remember the player better. You're going to have a
more complete picture of them instead of just things getting
taken a little out of context if you're just trying
to type into a keyboard. Little man.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
I'm big on that DJ. I am big on journaling.
I think people should, like scouts should.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Journal those things.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
And our buddy John Gordon has a great reflective process
where he talks about what went well, what needs to improve?
Speaker 2 (07:08):
What did you learn? I think that it's so applicable
when it comes down to the scouting process.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
We still are having conversations about Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold,
Jared Goff and the things that we've learned from those evaluations,
but not only those initial evaluations, but.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
How guys grow and improve.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
I just saw Josh Allen get his jersey retired at Wyoming,
and I think about going to Boise to see him
in the Potato Bowl and what the thought was because
he was such a polarizing or follow the prospect, but
to see him grow in those things, and how when
you have those experiences, he changes how you look at
future players. I just think the greatest scouts are the
(07:48):
ones that are ever evolving, and writing and journaling is
all a big part of continue to grow along this ride.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Yeah, I think it's fun. It's a fun topic, you know,
as we're kind of looking and learning and trying to
improve and get better. Sometimes old as new, you know,
like doing things the old school, whether it's still value
in that. I saw a thing I think it was
landing with Organ talking about how each week he has
his players, this self assessment. Do you do the same thing. Yeah, hey,
what do you learn it from? You? I learned genius.
(08:18):
I'd never heard that before. It's smart.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
I hadn't And it's funny. It coincided with a loss.
We just lost to a league opponent. I didn't feel
like I did a really good job of preparing us,
and that video comes across Twitter and it made me reflect.
And what I did is that we have this Communication
Advice an app where we send it all to the
team and DJ.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
The response is that you get back from each player.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
It's illuminating because then you're like, oh, I thought it
was this, but actually they're telling me, coach, we need
more of this.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
And the feedback is everything.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
And you know, like in our business when you were scouting,
you constantly got feedback either from the director, the general manager, whatever.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
That feedback is essential to you grow.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
So yeah, when you talk Dan Lanning being able to
do that, I appreciate coaches that are willing to grow
and have a different approach to maybe their predecessors. Lanning
is one of those guys just at the front end
of challenging himself to be better each and every day.
As a result, his teams are always better.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
No doubt. That's good stuff, man, fun little topic there
before we get into these games. And as we do that,
I want to remind you the NFL continues to honor
and commemorate the late John Madden with the fourth annual
John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration Thursday, November twenty seventh. That's here.
New this year, the NFL will benefit the newly created
John Madden Foundation by auctioning off game used items from
(09:37):
the three Thanksgiving Day games via NFL Auction, with proceeds
supporting the new foundation. So very cool how they're doing
that as we look at this slate of games, but
let's let's jump into it here. We got four games
to get into. Packers Lions. Huge game here, Packers seven
three and one, Alliance seven and four. What are you
(09:59):
looking forward to that?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing how do the Lions
compartmentalize their emotions and really focus on execution the emotions
from getting beat down, beating pillar to posts as you
guys talked about in their first matchup, how do they
handle it and what I call a big stage game
Thursday Thanksgiving. Everyone is watching Dan Campbell taking over the
(10:21):
play calling. Can you resist the urge to put on
a show, to put this team in the best position
to operate offensively, and then can this defense continue to
get better against the Packers team I still believe has
not played their best football yet, so you wait for
them explode. So I want to see how the Lions
handle all of those emotions against the division rival that
(10:42):
they need to get one back again.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
I'll tell you what I'm looking for one word speed.
I want to see how the speed of this Green
Bay Packers defense matches up with the Jamier Gibbs and
the Jamison Williams on the other side of the ball
with the Detroit Lions. If you really look at it,
how they built this team with the trade of Michael
Parsons and how they've drafted the last couple years. People
talk about the physicality of Detroit, how physical they are,
(11:04):
but really the damage that those are the body blows,
it's the knockout punches with the explosiveness. Really, Jamior Gibbs
being number one on that list, and this Packers defense
has been built to combat that speed with probably the
fastest front seven in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Super fast Michael Parsons gives them a tremendous amount of
disruption at the point of attack. I saw the note
that came up twenty eight quarterback pressures, which is ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
And it's coming on a.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Week where Michael Parsons talked about ten sacks being the
floor that he thinks a great player ten sacks should
be the minimum in terms of what he should be.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Able to do.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
I think that is great that a dominant player has
standards like that, because that's what you want to see
because if he is pushing himself to always make sure
a man I at least got to get ten and
am I shooting for ten? It means I'm gonna get
twelve to fourteen, which allows the other guys to have
impactful players.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Devonte, Why you think.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
About what Richhard Geary has been able to do and
this is a fast at front, but hey man, your
eyes have to go to number one when you're doing
the scouting report. You got to take care of number one.
If not, he will single handedly beat you on defense. Yeah,
this is going to be his first big stage. How
about he goes from one Thanksgiving team, the Cowboys, to
another Thanksgiving team here in this game, going up against
the Detroit Lions with the Green Bay Packers, so it
(12:17):
doesn't get the holiday off here for Micah Parsons. But
really looking forward to that ball game, and I think
that's the key to the game. If they can limit
the explosives from Detroit, make them play station to station
as we talk about with baseball, I think the Packers
have a good chance of going in there and getting one.
But really looking forward to that game that is at
one o'clock Eastern on Fox. We get to the four
thirty game on CBS that is Chiefs Cowboys, a massive game.
(12:40):
I've been using the line it's kind of a loser
leave town match. Can't afford for either one of these
teams will lose this ballgame.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
No, you can't affoord it.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
And you just think about the stakes being magnified on
Turkey Day, just everything that comes with it, like what
we want to see, how you want to see this
thing go down?
Speaker 2 (12:58):
I love it, man, I love these games.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
DJ I'm not gonna lie like I love getting to
Thanksgiving because from this point on, every game that is
played matters. I love seeing these matchups.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Yeah, looking forward to that. We'll see no trace Smith,
which is not great when you're down a guard and
you're going up against that D line all of a sudden.
Now with the Dallas Cowboys, they can throw at you.
That's going to be a key to the ball game
is how do they protect Patrick Mahomes offense started to
find itself a little bit. Ran a bazillion plays last
week in some of the ages some of those players
(13:27):
will see. How how you know on the road short week,
a lot of plays last week I think over ninety plays.
How fresh leged did the Kansas City Chiefs look offensively? Yeah,
So here's the thing about the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
I think they talked about Isaiah Pacheco maybe coming back
to one thing that I worry about the Chiefs is
the lack of balance that they have in their office.
We've talked about and we'll continue to talk about to
be a theme in the offseason. How they need an
A plus back to alleviate some of the pressure on
Pat Mahomes in the passing game. But down this stretch
when teams are going to play coverage heavy, how are
they going to manufacture the exposive plays In the past,
(13:58):
most recently has been Pat Mahomes extending plays and waiting
for someone to shake free from coverage and then they
get an explosive. But if the Cowboys are disciplined and
they're not able to get those improvisational plays, how are
the Chiefs going to manufacture those explosives to score points?
Because you know what we talk about it, Brian Billick
used to talk about the explosive plays and how it
(14:20):
correlates to scoring points.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
If the Chiefs can't deliver those explosives, it is hard
for them the light of a scoreboard. Yeah, and I
also would say Mahomes being able to run around, that's
going to be a nice addition or to what they're
trying to do offensively. It's going to need to be
additioned as it was earlier in the season. So keep
an eye on that in that ball game, all right,
Joe Burrow, he's back buck Bengals at the Ravens. That's
the night game on NBC eight twenty on Thanksgiving Night.
(14:45):
So just as you're getting that nice little for me,
it's a Hawaiian role. Maybe a little turkey, maybe a
little cam going back, a little gravy there, a little
something to top off the night. Yeah, some of the
top off the night.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
I'm not gonna lie DJ because probably about the second half,
the fourth quarter of the Cowboys game, maybe a little
look't have time for me, so I can get up
and get my energy back for this game. This is
gonna be great because I understand with Joe Burrow. He
knows this is the last hurrah. They have got to
do something remarkable to get their sales into the postseason.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
So if he.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Plays and like we expect him to play, man they're
going to push and test the Baltimore Ravens. I will
say this, because the Ravens have reeled off a five
game win streak, people are beginning to see them as
the team being back. This is gonna be a big
challenge for them because defensively, they're now going to be tested.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
We'll find out so much more.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
About the defense and the improvements that they made with
how they perform.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Against the Cincinnati Bengals offense. That's explosive. Yeah, what do
you think about Burrow coming back? I agree with what
he said. He's like, I'm a football player. If I'm
healthy enough to play, I'm gonna play. Even if the
season might have got away from him a little bit.
He's not gonna punt on the season and take the
rest of the year off. So I like the fact
that he's playing this ball game. He's a professional. That's
what professionals should do.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
But more importantly, franchise quarterbacks, you got to take the
ball every week that your health. I mean, that's just
the expectation DJ when we talk about the quarterback, and
we talk about a lot of different physical characteristics and
traits and those things, but there's a toughness that we
expect from our quarterback. You saw it for years with
the charges with Philip Rivers. It doesn't matter what is
(16:16):
going on when they call out the starting lineup, seventeen
is there. I think the same thing post true for
Joe Burrow in anybody else that we deem to be
a franchise quarterback. If they're kicking it off, I expect
to see QB one playing.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
I don't think we've seen the best of Lamar Jackson
at either, and I think there's a chance against this
Bengals defense that that's what we get to me. I
think Baltimore had to steady everything. They had to kind
of get back on solid ground, which they've done. They're
now back in first place. They haven't really hit their
stride yet and it feels like to me, matchup wise,
they're gonna pump thirty on the Bengals. Man, that's the
(16:51):
low number in this game for the Ravens, short weekend
against that defense. They're getting thirty in this game.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
I mean, they need to continue around in the form
because when you look at their schedule, Man, they can
really make a run. And we talked about all the
things at the beginning. They could finish with the kind
of record that we expect them to have. Anyway, Yeah,
they need to put it up. They need to hang
in number. But if they hang a number, can they
permit the Bengals from also hanging a number. That's what
(17:20):
I want to see. That's the thing that we haven't
seen from the Ravens. We haven't seen them challenge by
an offense that have high power capability, elite explosiveness. We
haven't seen them that. So I want to measure their
growth in a game against a team like this. All Right,
the best game of all these is the Black Friday game.
It's Bears Eagles, both teams eight and three.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
To me, if the Bears can block the Eagles like
the Cowboys block the Eagles, Bears, can they can win
this game. Man. I know that people talk about their schedule,
but if their offensive line holds up, I think they've
got a good shot in this game on the road
at Philly.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Yeah, two weeks in a hour. I felt like the
Pittsburgh game last week was huge for the Bears. I
feel like that was a respect game where people had
to kind of start raising their eyebrow like, hey, maybe
they are they pulled this one off. Now we begin
to have the discussion about them being a contender, a
legitimate contendent despite the flaws that the Eagles have or
the infighting in those things.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
At the Bears pull this off, you have to respect him.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
And Ben Johnson has done a terrific job of helping
Caleb Williams play better.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
They have balance on the offense.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
That they needed the Dennis Allen in this turnover websess defense.
That's where you have to really give them a lot
of credit. They take the ball away at an alarming rate,
and they're going to challenge the Eagles, who traditionally take
really good care of.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
The ball with Jaana Hurts. Yeah, we'll see how that
one goes down. Looking forward to that matchup, to me,
the best one. We'll have a chance to recap all
these next week as we come back on the show.
I do want to again rush everybody happy. Thanksgivin. Thank
you so much for letting us be a part of
your day, whether you're in a workout, on a commute,
or just hanging out. So we appreciate you hanging with us.
(18:53):
And also do want to remind you we have a
big time guest coming up. We've got one more episode
and we're going to we're going to be previewing it
unbelievable Weekendo College plall with the best our buddy Joel Flatt,
So be on the lookout for that episode on Friday.
All right, guys, that's going to do it for us.
We'll see you next time right here on MO the
Sticks h
