Speaker 1 (00:06):
What's up everybody on Peanut Tillman and this is the
NFL player's second acts podcasting.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
With me as always is my guy Roman.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Like the shirt?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
The shirt, Yeah, you like it.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
At the end of the day, I'm really looking forward
to our next guest. He's been so successful on and
off the field, a unique path to get to where
he is today, which is what I'm really really enthused
to hear and talk about, because this is what we do.
We come here to hear about all of the former
players that are involved with the NFL about their second act.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Go ahead. Pinat introduced who we.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Have the Heart and Prodde and Soul of Montana played
four years in the league. Now he's working in finance.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the pod.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Mister Corey Procter, Proctor, come on, man.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
I like that's a good intro.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I like, yeah, it's well.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Proctor reminds me of I'm a fan of like the
eighties movies, the Old School and you remember Police Academy, Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Captain Harris a lot. Yeah, those are movies.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Those were really good.
Speaker 5 (01:08):
That and you bring back that's college stuff. You bring
the heart and pride or whatever. Justin Greene played Baltimore's
our old full back. He used to us used to
master puppets from Metallica, and instead of master, he'd be
like Proctor, Proctor. It's like all that old stuff memories.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Man, Yeah, this is a great memory.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
So clearly you were a lot smaller now today than
when you were playing.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
Don't say it like that.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, you're healthy smaller now.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
I mean, like I walked in, you guys are still
looking like you could do some stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Absolutely, we get jacked every time we see each other.
Like we just were all about the weight room push
ups all day long.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
We have been on trips together where we just run
through decks of cards and just whatever the cards.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Should you still do that workout? Yeah? Do that workout now?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Absolutely?
Speaker 5 (01:54):
That's that's that's that's the dB wide receiver workout for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
All day Longah, right before I go to the.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
Beach, exactly. I mean that's why you guys.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Look, so what was your playing weight three or five?
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Three old five? And we're now and how do your knees?
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Phil my knees, Oh man, I crack everywhere. I'm like
my bag, I mean, he's pop. Your whole body pops
when you're walking around. My shoulder hurts, my back hurts.
I mean, I got it all, but I still stay active.
I want to be strong. Yeah right, I want to
be around for my babies, and so I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, how long after did it take you to lose
it all?
Speaker 5 (02:29):
It took a while. Look fat boy took over afterwards. Okay, okay,
I got up to three forty two. It was my
heaviest and so I had to curtail the Italian subs
and some other things sugar. But you know when when
I stopped force feeding, lost twenty pounds. When I stopped
eating a bunch of bread and sugar, lost another twenty
and then I really had to just tighten it up.
(02:49):
So like lately. I mean, I'm in a master mind now,
but I got accountability to coach my My Australian guy
in Bali right now is just a surfer guy with
a ripped up body. So I got to in my
diet every day. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, why do you think fat boy took over?
Speaker 5 (03:05):
Lineman? Appetite never wants to leave. Man, I still want
to eat the whole pizza. I mean, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, I got yeah, I gotcha.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
It's just what you're in that behavior and then you stop.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
That's really funny. I mean sorry, cause it's true.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
I mean, you know, when you're at a football camp,
you're doing these other things.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
They give you these late night snacks.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
You can buy a whole pizza, and these old linemen
eat the whole pizza. It's not like me and you like, oh,
we could share one. They don't share. This is what
most old linemen do, and it's okay for them.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
Right yeah. Well, I mean at first you just forced feed.
And that's what I got told my whole life, was
like you need to be bigger, right, And it's not
like I was just I was tall, but I was
kind of a lean guy, and so you need to
be bigger. So we're kind of had that preached into us,
where nowadays you see the lean, lean old lineman, which
they look way better now, but but I had that
(03:59):
pre sentence. Anytime that milkshake came around, they're like, do
you get a milkshake? No? I didn't. After my third one,
I'm like, no, I didn't get one, So I get
another one and then a chubby boy takes over and
then I'm really fat going into Philly the next day.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Corey, So, what was your first welcome to the NFL
moment coming from Montana.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
You're from Washington originally, but what was.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
That you remember Sean Rogers, Sean Rodgers, big Baby.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Big Baby.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
I was teammates with him in New Orleans for you.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Yeah, I worked out one of my that's a massive
human mons.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
He basically ran over me in one on once and
I was like, all right, so I worked really hard
to do this and get run over and I was
just like, so, I don't know what to do from here.
I just like, I guess I'll just keep showing up.
But that's what it was is I got he laid
me out, and what it is like not even it
(04:54):
wasn't even like a an effort, right. And then what
was funny was I was on practical to Detroit at
the time and that happened in two days in camp,
so that han't got cut. They put me on practice
squad and then later I get picked up in Dallas.
But right before that, I'm watching the film of Larry
Allen and I've seen and in that film, I saw
(05:16):
Larry launch Sean Rodgers like he was a little boy.
And I'm like that is a full grown, three hundred
and fifty pounds man that this guy just threw across
the field. And I'm like a little scared for my life.
I don't know, I don't know if I belong right now,
you know, but I'm just gonna keep showing up. So
(05:36):
I was able to puney in a little bit so
I could run around.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
So I want to talk about I don't want to
go back to twenty ten Thursday night football game Bears
and Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
You were in that game? Actually I was in that game.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
I was there.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
I played for the Bears.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Okay, I had to pick. That game was in Miami.
What do you remember about that game?
Speaker 5 (05:58):
That's where I died. That's where That's where athlete me died, basically, Yeah,
and I always quip at it. I'm like, at Miami,
that's where athletes go to die, you know, And yeah,
that's kind of funny. But what I you know what
that was? That was a hard time. It was really
a turnaround time, especially after that because I got into
(06:18):
a fight with my old line coach the day before
the game, and that was Dan Campbell's assistant tight ends coach,
And it's that's my guy. Everybody loves Dan and uh,
and it was it was me o line coach him
and I'm not I've been yelled at by everybody. I
(06:38):
don't know if you guys had that, but I kind
of reached the point I was tired of being yelled
at and I started laughing in the middle of it.
I'm like, you know, that's just that's crazy. Yeah. So
I kind of sent him the next roof. But but
I got in a big so I was big, I
was up tight. I wasn't playing my good best ball
and uh. But the second series of the game, I
(06:58):
was starting at center. We went up on a short screen,
alley screen, and so I just had to shuck the nose,
get up to the mic, which is her lacker at
the time. Yeah, and uh, And any time I tell
down on the stage, they're like, oh my gosh, did you die?
Like you know, I'm like, I'm still talking to you
right now. But it's kind of funny. It's not right here,
but that's okay. But we get up, I get up
(07:20):
to the mic and I totally over pursued him. I
just took the wrong angle. He ran underneath me. I
planted and my kneecaps foot in half.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
So, and all of a sudden, I'm passed out. And
what was funny about it was Ko, our trainer at
the time, was like slapping me in the head to
wake me up, which is not concussion.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Why did you pass out? Was it just pain?
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Was it worst pain I've ever had in my life?
So when I passed out, he slapping me. Not concussion
protocol right anymore? Anyways, And but I woke I woke up,
and I had this thing had filled up like a
cantalope already.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
And I mean it's basically a fire hose went off
of my knee and if you go watch film, it
looks like it just fell. It's weird. And so but
when I when I the night of the injury, and
then when I woke up from surgery, the first surgery,
worst pain in my life. I don't talk to anybody,
So but that was didn't realize it, but that was
(08:21):
the that was the end right there.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
So, and so I've listened to a couple of your
podcasts and some other speaking things that you've done, and uh,
the question is, when did you decide to stop chasing
the dream or trying to get back healthy enough or
holding on to this dream of still playing, because you
(08:47):
say some really good things and I don't want to
say them for you, but I'm a fell in the
blank if you don't say what I'm trying to put you.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Into basically say what it's just really good and so
you better say.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
It, like what kind of brought you to that point?
Kind of talk to me about your mentality as you're
trying to figure that out, because that that we talk
about all the time. This game retires us. Not most
people get to make that choice of retiring themselves.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Yeah, it sucks, right, I had, I didn't want to
I and I I mean it does retire I had,
I got hurt, every intent on coming back, ended up
having an infection in my knee. And Jimmy Andrews, he
was a doctor who worked on all my stuff out
a Birmingham and Cola and Pete Colon Yeah peak, yeah,
(09:39):
but I was his first infection as an athlete, he
told me. And the guy is amazing though, like he
called me coming out of church on a Sunday praying
for me. And you know, I don't know what kind
of doc who has his book of business would do that.
So he he was a huge influence on me in that.
(09:59):
But every ten and coming back it didn't happen. Tried
to rehabit, lots of surgery, five surgeries on that knee
later didn't come back. But I'm technically my minimums higher,
more expensive, I'm older, I got a bunch of cuts.
You know, there's younger, cheaper guys out there that they
could go develop. And you know, when we lived in
(10:20):
Jersey at the time, was trying to train. It wasn't happened.
And we moved back to Texas in March of thirteen
and bought a home there and kind of held out.
But I got sick of waiting on somebody else to
call me. Yeah, is what happened. And I just I
remember I remember sitting here cussing at my agent watching
slop on the field that I feel like I'm better
(10:42):
at you know, and we've all been there, and I
just got to this point where I was, I was
so sick of waiting for a coach to call, or
an agent or a scout or somebody else to call
me to come in that I remember looking at Megan
and my wife and I was like, Babe, we got
to start making choices for ourselves. And and so we
(11:04):
moved to Texas, finished my degree and and now I
ended up going to New Orleans for their rookie minicamp
when that CBA allowed for veterans to go. So I
did that, and it was cool because I had a
good even though it was no pads, it was I
had a good camp and I was just honestly, I
released a lot where I'm like, I'm not going to
be so tight intense and I'm just gonna go play
(11:27):
and I'm gonna be cool with the coaches, say thank
you for the opportunity. And Sean Payton was still there,
and he was great because all the coaches, including him,
were like, you're You're exactly what we're looking for. But
we're gonna look at these young guys and super gracious
and so I kind of had this closure in my
head from that. Now I'll tell you a bigger picture
that came from that was I had more of a
(11:48):
revelation later a lot from my faith was. You know,
I got into that fight with my coach. There was
a coupled and gott in that fight with my coach,
and I was complaining about that to somebody else to
another buddy. And I remember hearing this voice when I
was complaining about it, saying, yeah, but you did nothing
to help. And I'm like, now I got to deal
(12:10):
with my own garbage, you know. And so so I
had to like basically rectify that in my head. But
I also, because of my faith, had the same communication
of like I was too much about me during that time,
and I wasn't playing good ball because I was too selfish.
I was sitting and thinking I got to work harder.
Was not the case. I wasn't working with guys and
trying to seek like good counsel from brothers or from
(12:31):
coaches or for somebody else around me. I was just
trying to do it all me. And and I think
what like my faith God kind of had really communicated
to me was like, you're too much about you. You're
engaged to your wife. I need to make a husband
and not a football player. And so it was great
because that helped release a lot of pent up anger
(12:53):
frustration that I had that I felt like I still
that was still there right right, So it was really
good for me because I had I'm like, I had
to go be a husband to my wife. Who was
waiting for me to actually be that, and so you
know where football took first, first seat ahead of her,
which a lot of wives I could tell you it
(13:14):
felt like that. Yeah, I do. And so so it
was good for me to be checked in a place
where I needed to to make sure my priority is
from the right place. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
So undrafted out in Montana, started on the lines practice squad,
you got signed to the Cowboys roster, you played four
years in in NFL. What do you think about your
NFL career looking back on it now? The career, what
do you think about it?
Speaker 5 (13:45):
It's good, Yeah, you know, I mean, obviously I would
have liked more. I still had the aspiration to be
a full time starter and be a be a pro
bowler and all that stuff. And I'll tell you, I
appreciate it for what it is, is for what it was,
and it was an awesome part of my life. Obviously,
something really cool in the NFL. I look back on
(14:08):
it now and I don't harbor any issues where a
lot of us do because we're preached to be in
this family and give everything you got in the second
we don't need you. We'll see later. Yeah, And that's
heavy to deal with, right, and everybody's got to go
through this transition. But I'll tell you big thing that
(14:29):
helped me was when I started crafting a skill outside
of that. That's when they started taking notice again. And
so it was basically I get the question. I'm like,
They're like, what are you doing now?
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Right?
Speaker 5 (14:42):
Because Okay, I'm not valuable on the field anymore, which sucks.
Got to deal with through that and go re define
myself essentially. But what was neat was everybody still cared
about you. But the business side just it feels so
cutthroat that we do tie personal stuff to it. I
get it. But honestly, when it came back to this place,
(15:04):
like people, coaches, owners were still genuinely interested in me
because they invested dollars into me, and where your treasure is,
your heart lives also. So I'm like, if I invest
in you, obviously I want an investment or return on
my investment, but like I have interest in you, like
this's my money is where my mouth is, right and uh,
(15:25):
and so anyways, they were always I remember time I
went to the to the combine and I was scared
to do it, but I walked up some nice stickhouse,
I remember what it was, but the Cowboys bus was
outside and agent buddy of mine was like, hey, you
know the whole Cowboys cruise up.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
That's like the one that's right across the street from
the from the Dome. Yes, the one that used to
be downtown. That's what I all kind of hang out up.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
Yeah, And so I went up. But this is right
when they hired McCarthy and Steven Jones sitting right next
to him. He's like, Proctor, what are you doing here?
And he pulled out a chair. He's like, come sit down,
tell me what's going on. And the guy was interested. Man,
And so it was cool because, like, we harbor so much.
But I think, and it's as hard as it is,
(16:09):
I think if you let go of it and you
realize that, like, yeah, that's the business part, but there's
still a lot of good people here that are doing
some amazing things. You're able to get past that. You're
going to unlock a lot of opportunity for yourself past
that and and segue into a bigger part of your life.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
What was that one thing that you started to invest
in outside of the space that gave you the ability
to all of a sudden when you came back, they
looked at you different.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
What was that?
Speaker 5 (16:37):
Well, so I think a big part of it was
my faith. Okay, so so you that part, yeah, that
part of you that was the biggest part. Yes, yeah,
And that to me that was basically I'm how deep
you want to get into that one, but it was
kind of this Proverbs three five is trusting the Lord
with all your hardly, not on your own understanding. Is
(16:59):
basically realized that there was a God and I'm not him.
And so where I still appreciate guys that want to
take the load on their shoulders and take care of business,
because I do think we have a lack of that
in this world. You can't do it all. And so
there's all that, but it's I can still allow my
(17:20):
wife to take care of the gifts that she has, right,
I can still go to work, and I can still
be honest with you that I don't have all the answers.
And I think if we're allowed to let that load
off of us a little bit and be honest, that
it releases a different kind of power, and honestly, it
postures you you and a better place to receive whatever
(17:43):
is potentially coming down the path.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Yeah, so Rome and I are some of the Rome
and I we have similar personalities, Like we're very we're
people persons, can we can, we can go out, we
can talk to anybody. We network, we talk, we talk
to anybody where they're secure, guard, a janitor, whoever. Like
that's that's kind of that's kind of what we do.
I want to ask you, how do you feel about
(18:06):
the power of networking?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
It's huge in what way?
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Well, I mean you gotta be cool with each other. Yeah, right,
I mean, like I'll tell you, I'm like, listen, I
from as much as I moved around as a kid,
there were still elements in me that God had to
work out.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
I still had judgmental besides of me very much so,
and I mean, lix, I'll tell you what, Like there
were times even in Detroit was I was a fish
out of water in Detroit, Washington State. Went to basically
Abercromby and Fitch High School, Okay, and I go to
Montana and then I go to Detroit, and I was like,
(18:43):
later on this is when like basically I had to
have these relatory moments of like why I had to
walk the path that I did. And that was one
where it's like, hey, you knew this bubble. I needed
to put you in different cultures so you understood what
was available out there. Who was that? So it wasn't
just about you, and so it was so cool about
it was like, I'm I'm experienced. I want to go
(19:06):
other people's homes. Man, I want to eat your food,
I want to talk to your parents, I want to
tell you. I'm like, I want to see where you
came from. This is why I like to travel, like
going to Africa and Barcelona and Israel, like these places
have been so exciting for me that I might get
to taste somebody else's life. That's cool to me. And
I needed those those checks along the way. It honestly,
(19:28):
it keeps It keeps me from getting too big in
my own breeches, you know.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
So as you've reflected back in all these different paths
right that God has placed you, and when you look back,
what is something like, Man, I mean God really showed
me this.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Oh man, there's a lot.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
First one that comes to mind.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
So I had That's what I'm saying. It depends how
you deep you want to go on this thing. So
you know, The first thing comes to my mind. My
brother lost his son right before second birthday, and so yeah,
and so we had our first daughter during that and
so the first time they met was actually at Saint Jude,
(20:16):
and so there was so he lost him. My I'm
middle of three boys. My younger brother and I have
best friends. This is the only guy that I would call.
I'm like, what are you doing this weekend? He's like nothing.
I'm like, you want to come to the game? And
his wife would scold me, you're not paying for another ticket.
I'm like, he's the only wanted to hang out, only
one I wanted to hang out with, right, and and
(20:37):
so when he went through that, that was a super
heavy time for us. So but that was also a
huge catalyst in my faith that God used and I'll
tell you one of the biggest turn or big things
that happened in my life. A lot of us can
question why why death? Why why children are? Why these
(21:00):
people would die, because especially when there's so much trash
in the world, there's so many garbage, which I think
is a good question to ask. But during one of
my studies, we had talked about basically uh genesis to revelation,
and in Genesis one twenty six. One twenty six is
the first plural use of anything in the Bible. One
(21:23):
through twenty five is all singular. God created, God created,
God said, God said when twenty six is the first
plural where it says and God said, we will make
man in our image. And well, okay, it's not a secret.
But who's he talking about. Who's having this conversation when
he says we in the pre planning of creation? Who's
he talking about? It's the trinity, God, the Father got
(21:45):
the son in the Holy Spirit, right, and so you
imagine this conversation going on between the three of them,
and basically said the God in the pre planning phase.
You know, the dad's the Father's asking asking the two
other people at table right now, He's like, I know
there's going to be a screw up, there's going to
be a break. How are we going to fix this?
(22:05):
And his son is the one who steps up and says,
I'll take care of it. And you can imagine knowing
the weight of the world has got to fall on
this guy and this is my only son, how this
dad might feel, how much pain would come into his
heart knowing his son has to take all the weight
(22:26):
of the world sin on his shoulders, and how painful
that's going to be. As a dad, you don't want
your kid to walk through that, right and so, but
also how much pride he might feel knowing that it
was a choice that he made that because you would
do the same thing for your family. And I remember
this thought coming into my head when we were going
(22:46):
through this study, was we have an intimate relationship before
we ever get down to this earth. And this is
my faith talking, right, But I said, the question got
posed to me. What if he had this conversation before
he ever got here, Like my nephew Evan, what if
you had this conversation with God. It's like, hey, man,
I can get to your family, I can get to him,
(23:07):
but something BIG's gotta happen. And he was the one
that said I'll do it and and I'll tell you
like when that hit me, it was almost like this
kiss on the cheek, and it was basically like, Okay,
if that's what it was, I'm gonna make sure everybody
knows about it. Yeah, and I'm gonna I'm gonna make
sure it wasn't for nothing. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
I appreciate you sharing that story. It's a it's the
best way to look at that situation in my opinion,
and uh, I hope that was the case. I will
say it is the case, and uh, we're not in
that much control anyway. Same thing as you said earlier.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
I'm gonna talk about wealth management, Okay, Okay.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
I you got to bring it back up. We got well.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
I was also gonna say, like, has any any of
the owners coaches, have any of these guys kind of
poured into you to help you kind of in this
whole transition phase they kind of led you to the
finance world or what you're doing now.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
No, those so they've they've all been great. All those
guys have been awesome. But they're busy, you know that.
Like they got things, They got their their stuff to do.
So what I did, So I started my company no
intent on doing this. I actually was going to be
an elementary ed teacher. And I mean the teachers work
way too hard and get paid too little. So that's
(24:24):
what I kind of equoted. That league spoiled me on
that one, Okay, And so I finished my degree in
psychology trying to figure out what to do. And I
was actually in sales at first, and I did a
lot of speaking gigs, and there was always a financial
guy that was trying to get at me. You guys
have been through that, I know you have. And but
I finally started having asked questions, why is this a
(24:45):
repetitive deal? And so really what came from it was
I realized my past and why I behaved the way
I did with my own money. And what happened was
I was in a correct junior year high school and
rear ended a lady. She filed suit a year later,
my mom and my stepdad for bankruptcy, lost the house,
in the vehicles, and so I kind of like guys,
I clammed up. I took that into the league with me,
(25:07):
and I really wasn't worried about the next guy who
tried to sit across the kids the table and try
to get my money and yeah, deep pocket, short arms
one right.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
And but Marco Rivera hooked me up with a lady
Mark I remember him. He conflict of interest. I married
her daughter, okay, and but she made me some good money.
But I she was willing to just teach me up.
As I asked a bunch of stupid questions and uh,
and so learned up along the way. But I wasn't
(25:40):
really interested in the guy that's sit here and try
to promise me another point or two. And I basically
just wanted to put a vault around my life where
my we weren't subject to those kind of issues at
a lawsuit or something else trying to come somebody trying
to steal my money. And so effectively we did that
and the revelation was basically go repeat it. That was it.
(26:03):
And so that became the premise of the job. And
she had made us good money, and that largely in
the stock market, and I had, you know, we had
seen a great return if you if you remember, like
so two thousand and eight, we had big trash. That
was Obama's first president's year or first year of presidency,
so hit through his next seven years and Trump's next
three years before COVID, we had a huge run in
(26:24):
the market and we had awesome growth in our portfolios.
And so you know, I made minimum five out of
my six years playing well today there's we have no
need for the league, and that's largely because we made
some good choices along the way and had some great growth.
But I just wanted to make sure nobody could take it.
That was it, and so we we just that became
(26:48):
an emphasis in the business, or a big focal point
was entrepreneurs people that looked like me building businesses, and
they knew that was the baby. So we have to
protect the baby and protect away from the baby.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
So that was when you started the pro Capital company.
That's kind of where that started.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
Yes, yeah, so that was eight end of eighteen, twenty eighteen, okay,
And it was like I never even thought about trying
to do it for somebody else. I just did took
care of my own stuff. Yeah, And so when that
when that revelation came in, I was like, okay, let's
do that.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
So not naming I don't need to know names of
clients obviously, but do you have any pro athletes as clients?
Speaker 5 (27:28):
I have a couple. I'll tell you. I thought at first, naturally,
like guys get into this business and like I'm going
to new athletes. I could no problem. Yeah I can
speak athlete language. But I'll tell you what a lot
and I know you guys, we did a lot of
stupid things, no.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Doubt, I mean, and we're going to do them regardless.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Yeah, that's the other part.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
I rich kids is what we are are rich bit kids.
Speaker 5 (27:53):
I love my guys, but if they can't prove smart
enough to handle their money a little little bit, I
don't want them as clients. And so we had we
had some issues with some guys that, you know, we'd
do background checks. You know, we had one guy left,
did a ton of planning for a guy and he
(28:14):
wanted to put money with another investment, which was no problem,
that's his money. But didn't like how the guy was
treating my admin, my assistant, and did a background check
and we found two aggravated felonies. One was a bank
robbery and brought that to the case and that wasn't
thirty days later, he transferred all accounts and I'm like,
I don't know, we just found two aggravated felonies on
(28:36):
this guy, and he's like, I just want something else.
I go, okay, So I can't. I can't. You know,
I don't have full answers on all of that. But
what I what I did see was that was that
other guys or people that were building businesses like me,
they were going through the same problems or had been
through the same problems. And so we could we could
(28:57):
speak to each other on those and so on. Entrepreneurs like,
we have high heavy cash flow months where we're doing awesome,
and we got to realize that we got to pay
down debt and invest heavy in that time away from
the business. Other times we don't want low cash flow months.
We got to be willing to take out lines of
credits or debt or something to float the payroll and
(29:18):
understand that those are big ebbs and flows in the business,
and how do we tack on and add value to
the business to make sure that's growing or the biggest
problem with entrepreneurs is like how do we make sure
the business does well but we keep our family yea,
and not destroy either. And so you know that was
that's a big one for me. Is Ultimately one reason
(29:39):
I didn't go into coaching was because I didn't. I
sacrificed so much of my life for football. I didn't
want to sacrifice anymore. And so this allowed me to
make I could I could put my staff to work,
and I could go be at my kids games.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Yeah, so like that.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I like that, We're going to take a short break
and we'll be right back.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Social media looking at your Twitter or I'm sorry X
looking at your Twitter page.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
You do a good job.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Nothing but just quotes.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Where does that come from? And they're good quotes, by
the way, let me just they're they're great quotes. They're
inspirational quotes, like where does that come from?
Speaker 5 (30:18):
So my reading, I tell you, like when I found
my faith, that's when I became the massive consumer. Yeah,
that's that. I mean a fire got turned on and
I became insatiable all of a sudden. And my wife
it was funny because like my one of my first
assignments in one of my men's groups was twenty one
Irrefutable Laws and Leadership by John Maxwell, and it was
(30:39):
it started out as an assignment, then it turned into
a fire after that. Yeah, and so you know, I'd
be smacking my babe, my wife in bed, like, babe,
listen to this, you know, and she's like shut up
and trying to sleep. And but I books, you'd share
a powerful message or podcast all of a sudden, it
was podcast, ted talks, church messages, anything I get my
(31:02):
hands on. And all of a sudden, what I started
seeing with that was I started becoming the overflowing cup.
Was you can't give from an empty cup, right, like,
if you've got nothing.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
In, you can't pour out.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
You got nothing, right And so basically I had to
eat and consume so much where I had that overflowing
cup where I had a ton of information or powerful
pieces in me to deliver back and to me. I
kind of equate it to as two prong one if
you don't consume. A scripture that talks about letting not
(31:37):
the fool speak at the gate where business used to
be done at old schools, business used to be done
at the gate of the town. And if the fool
opens his mouth, he gets found out. And so another
proverb talks about a man's gift will make him known
amongst great men. So basically, if we're sitting at the
table we're all having this talk and you've consumed, or
(31:59):
if you've craft and your skill or your gift are
up enough, and I ask you a question, you could
respond with something really good and it'll make everybody take notice.
But if you haven't, you're the full at the gate. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
I like a couple of you.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
I just want to make sure I get them to everybody.
One of the ones that I like is you can't
scale chaos document the process. You use that on x
and Instagram quite a few times. This is a mantra
of yours. Another one I like to I like to
yours was it's the one right up under is your
(32:36):
standards should confuse the world because it wasn't set by
the world, so they shouldn't be ready for it or
understand it. But that's your standard, which is that high?
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Right. It's a lot of average people out there in
the world, dude, it's a.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Lot of average and it's and average people like other
average people because it's cool.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
You know, we're all.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
We're good, you're good right to stay right where we
are to be.
Speaker 3 (33:00):
And so.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
These are the quotes that mister Corey Proctor puts out
all the time, and so everybody hit follow you if
you haven't read them, or check out his page's and
it's pretty good. So this is your cup running over.
This is this is what you are on a day
to day basis. And I see on some of your
videos you have your kids in the background, so they're
(33:22):
hearing it.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
How did they respond to it? Because I know how
my kids respond.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Mine too, and mine's in the back, dude. They listen
to nothing. I say, a man is not a provident
in his own land.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
Gotta leave, have a promise, you gotta get out.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
How you see this? And she she's like, oh my god, Dad,
oh my god.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
S No, they know and you know that. Sorry, they
catch it. And now they catch they they they catch
more than they hear though, right true. And so I'll
tell you one thing. My oldest we have three ten
five girl, boy girl ten five and one, and Grace,
my oldest, and then the best. Grace is loving. She's
(34:12):
got my height. I'm my baby. You'll thank me for
the legs. I promise later and later. Yeah, And it's
tallest fourth grader in class are in the school right now.
And our five year old boy, Hank, he's a just
destroying every all boy out like Repp and push ups,
perfect form. I'm like, this guy is built better than
me right now. It's awesome. And then our fifteen month
old Faith, she's just a ham So it's awesome. But Grace,
(34:36):
there was one time and I don't even remember what
it was, but she said we were supposed to do something.
I'm like, now, not tonight, babe, it's not going to happen.
Then she goes, you said that we could do this.
I'm like, I don't remember, baby, and she goes, you
said that we could do this, and you said, we
do not go back on our word. We always follow through,
is what we do. And I'm like, okay on the lad,
(34:58):
okay on the line. I'm like, babe, we'll be back.
And so I don't remember what it was, but I
remember she held me to that, and and I'm like,
I would I want that person for me every day. Yeah,
And and I was so thankful that she did that,
because those words don't they don't come back void, like
(35:22):
this is I did. And she did that another time
I got a surgery. I remember praying over her in
this this is, this is this is such meathead stuff
for me. Like I heard a word one time, pastors
talking about like how you speaking to your family, like
how you speaking to the people around you, right, and
uh and so and so I just remember like that night,
I'm like, I don't remember. I'm not bad, but I'm
(35:43):
not intentionally good on any of this. And life and
death is in the power of the tongue. I remember
that's what was getting preached. And so I'm like, well,
I'm just gonna start speaking powerful things over my girl
in bed when she used to have her little you know,
the half the half crib with the escape hatch side.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Like the cot.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I could sleep in that thing on
my weight limit. But but I just remember I was like,
like when she's going to sleep sair prayers, I'm like,
Daddy loves you. I was like, tell me, tell me back,
say Daddy loves you. Daddy loves me. So you say
I'm tough, I'm tough, I'm strong, I'm strong, and say
you know you're so beautiful, I'm so beautiful, and she
(36:23):
would just repeat these things right, And we did it
for a long time. And I had to go do
another shoulder surgery. And I remember waking up from the
solder shoulder surgery kind of drunk on the anesthetic right,
and Megan and Grace were sitting there and Grace was
like what are She's like, what's wrong with Daddy? And
Megan was like, he's just in a little pain. But
(36:45):
doctor helped him. He feels better, and she goes can
I sit on his lap and get up in the
hospital bed and I'm like, come here, you know, like
half gone, and she pops up and she leans in
my ear and she whispers, Daddy, you're so strong. And
I tell you if that wasn't a branding moment for
me as a dad. So like those quotes that I share,
(37:08):
they come from my consumption, and so like what I
consume is going to flow out, and I want I
want them to catch that, yea, And that's proof that, like, hey,
we're doing good things. Let's keep moving.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Absolutely absolutely, So what comes to mind?
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Okay, yeah, go for it.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
I am so fine with it.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
What comes to mind when I say these two words
free reign?
Speaker 5 (37:41):
Oh man, that garage band, yeah, okay, great video game? Yeah, uh,
it was fun. It was jamming, having a good time.
And I still love music. Man. I sit there some
of the best times sitting in front of like campfire,
just jamming, yeah, and just chilling and but uh, good
(38:03):
time with Mark Colombo, Leonard Davis.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
And so for our viewers out here and our listeners,
mister Corey started a rock band okay, yeah, with a
couple of his.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Teammates, Mark Colombo, Leonard Davis, Justin Chapman.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
And all these are very large people. So ext yeah,
go ahead, three hundred plus, go ahead. I don't want
to say extremely large, but I just want to make
sure you know, they know besides, we're just talking above
their head.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
It's basically the starting office.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Of line of the Dallas Cowboys, like this, y'all had
some y'all have some weaight to you?
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Yeah, I want nobody doing y'all out the club.
Speaker 5 (38:36):
Well, it was funny because we had those times too.
It's like, oh no, we played Sunken Garden San Antonio
with like five Finger Death Punch and three Days Grace
and some cool bands and Casey Elephant and so we
played this show one time. Mark and Leonard was like
knows to knows about to fight on something. And Leonard
and his wife had had gotten some security and personal
(38:59):
security was like, I'm not breaking that. These guys are
over here.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
They're like, I'm good.
Speaker 5 (39:04):
We did not prep for this scenario right here. And
I came in and I see them nose to those
like trying to throw down on something, and I just
jump in the middle of them. I'm smaller than both
of them, yeah, but I just jump in the middle.
I'm like, what's wrong with you idiots? Right now? And uh?
And they broke off. They're fine, But it was like
It was just funny because we had we had a
blast and yeah it was garage band, and we did
(39:25):
the album and we got to travel through some really
cool stuff, met some rock stars and made some cool
friends and uh, but it was it was fun for
that chapter a time and then everybody, everybody had to
go their own ways. Man, we all had different paths.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
So what was more rewarding creating the band or you know,
making an album or being on the VH one show
rock and Roll Fantasy Camp And described.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
That show because I've never seen there before.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
Yeah, so VH one. This was created by David Fishoff,
one of the co creators of Gladiators, remember that back
in the day.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, awesome, turbo nice.
Speaker 5 (40:02):
Yeah, all those and so he created a rock and
roll Fantasy Camp. Basically he was he wanted to do
corporate guys that wanted to be in a band and
get these rock stars together. Well then they made a
reality show out of it, and the reality show participants
had to be able to play an instrument. And I
was the only one. They invited all of us to
be on, but I was the only one who was
(40:23):
up for it. And it was cool because, uh, they
treated me like a king. So I'm hanging out with
kitp Winger and Lemmy and lead to Ford and and
Michael's from Poison and and all these get to meet,
like all these guys, all these crazy rock stars. It
was it was legit. They're sharing some some wild stories. Man,
(40:45):
I can't repeat them on.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Here, but I get it and say less.
Speaker 5 (40:48):
But it was neat because we go into this competition
thing where I'm playing drums with these these guys who
can jam a little bit, and uh, kit Winger was
our guy. Over the top of it. Mark Hudson was
a big fan and he helped he helped co create
like Aerosmith's big albums or some of their big albums,
and so it was just it was a cool experience
(41:10):
that I got to be in sit here in l
A and like play celebrity a little bit, which this
is neat. Is neat to me?
Speaker 4 (41:19):
Is it true that you won that, either you or
your group Free Reign one Revolver Magazine's Golden gob Award
for Most Metal Athletes.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
What an award I've.
Speaker 5 (41:35):
Never heard, you know what's funny about that? So we
did that show and they announced us as the winners,
and we got the biggest boot ever.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
No way we're met.
Speaker 5 (41:46):
We're in a raider country at the time, so bad.
It was hilarious and I came up and it was
funny because Leonard Leonard was cool because he's like, I
want to thank my wife and I get up there
and I was all charged up. Listen, this is pre faith, okay,
so you gotta give me some grace. But I was like,
if you don't like the cowboys, screw you, and a
(42:06):
little more colorful language than that. And it just got
more more boots. But it was cool because, I mean,
same thing we got to We got to go hang
out with more cool people. Get me David Groll, Dave
Groll and and talk to these talk to all these
rock stars and it was create Marilyn Manson walking by,
(42:26):
I'm like, that's wild and uh so, I mean these
are all people like I grew up high school listening too. Yeah,
and that's a totally different And.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
You start a garage band with teammates and now you
get all this accidents.
Speaker 3 (42:42):
Out.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
We asked this question to a lot of our Before
you do this question, you don't even know what I'm
gonna ask. I'm totally making I'm totally making it up.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
We'll make it up in a second. I want I
want to ask you something because.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
He's the worst you.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
I just because I.
Speaker 4 (43:03):
Think this is great advice for a lot of people,
just in life in general. And you talked about this
in an interview in one of your podcasts, and you
talked about when you were trying to hang on to
this dream of making it back to the NFL, and
that how so often in life, too many of us
hang on to a dream, you pass up on so
many great opportunities, Like for you, you missed out because
(43:25):
you were trying to wait on this call. So I
chose not to go to my national championship reunion with
your teammates, and how important that was, and you just
look back, like, because I'm just so ingrained and just
so caught up in this, I missed out on the
time of my life because you don't get that back.
(43:46):
How often do you get to hang out with your
friends from college and like get to actually be you know,
celebrated together once again. And so I want you to
kind of share with us how you've kind of come
through that full circle and what kind of advice would
you give so many other people that it may be
stuck in the lane or feeling like they're trapped, or
(44:08):
that they're hanging on for the right opportunity for this
one thing, and what they're really possibly doing is maybe
missing out.
Speaker 5 (44:16):
Yeah, it's and it's crazy. I was so rigid, IM
so rigid, and I had to be here. I had
to do this. I had to look a certain way,
and I didn't. I was up tight, and even though
like I had a good demeanor other places, I was
so uptight in this category. And because that was the case,
and this is what happened, I think my last couple
(44:37):
of years in the league, my play declined because I
was so rigid in that place in my head and
instead of like you ever had the give up moment
where you're like, SCREWT, I don't care anymore, I'm gonna play,
and then all of a sudden, something amazing happens, and
it's the release. It's this physical, spiritual, emotional release of
(44:57):
whatever the weight is that you're carrying. And in that situation,
so I'm trying to hold out. I'm trying to We're
living in New Jersey at the time, living in an apartment,
trying to hold out for a workout or whatever. And
I remember thinking it was a ten year anniversary of
a two thousand and one national title in Montana, and
I'm sitting I'm like, well, what if I get a call,
then leave, I mean, go on the trip. If you
(45:22):
get a call, leave the trip. So what if that's
what you want, That's fine, right, And I look back
and I'm like, such an idiot. And we do that, though,
but we get so caught up in just this, and
you know, like I can't and I get it. I
get it, burn the ships, all that. But life has
so much flavor and so much opportunity around us that
(45:42):
we ignore all of it just to go down the
path that we think that we're supposed to go down.
And the thing is God starts bringing you all these
things around you, and now don't I don't want to
say take away your laser focus, because you still got
to do your thing. What I'm saying is, especially for
guys that are transitioning or maybe even looking to transition,
(46:04):
as like have this conversation on the side, don't let
it distract from like go and taking care of business
on the you know, in the on the field or
whatever you're supposed to do. But make sure you're having
the conversation on the side because you're talking about, you know,
five to ten years of your life. Are we going
to live till where eighty? Hopefully? Because I want to yeah.
And I'll tell you like, as soon as I started
(46:28):
releasing a lot of those things was when other opportunities
started coming in and so, like somebody wouldn't invite me
to a networking deal, like hey, I want you to
come someone like influential too. I can't, man, I can't
do that. I'm going to be here. Well, you could
meet somebody who's going to change your whole world.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
Yes.
Speaker 5 (46:45):
And I talked to this guy this morning who's trying
to he's selling life insurance, and he was telling me
how he got thrown out of a barber shop. Barbershop.
He's trying to help them set up their benefits for
their company and he he goes, Man, I walked in
two days later. The guy kicked me out. It was embarrassing.
I got kicked out. I walked in two days later
(47:06):
because I felt like I just needed to come back
and talk to him. And he goes, he goes, He's
like legit. It feels demeaning almost, but he was like,
I know, I see you sit down. I'll talk to
you in a minute. He like gestured that way, right,
He goes, but talk to the owner of this And
what ended up happening was it was a franchise for
a barbershop. He goes, I ended up getting the entire
(47:27):
health benefits package, selling his deal to this owner and
the entire franchise, and opening up two other of his
own locations as a franchise barbershop. And I'm like what,
and he goes, I went from being kicked out of
this place. Turns out the guy was just in a
bad mood. And I came back two days later, he
was cool, open to the whole thing and all that happened.
(47:50):
And I say that because if you're so rigid and
it's supposed to look the way I'm supposed to spoke,
I think it's supposed to look. And I get kicked out,
I'll never return, right. But if I just entered, retain
a whole bunch of opportunities that are floating around me.
I'm going to find a piece of gold somewhere.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (48:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (48:07):
Can I ask my last question, please are you sure?
Speaker 3 (48:09):
Please be positive?
Speaker 1 (48:12):
Okay, Mount Rushmore. You got four people, four picks. People
of influence, people, people that have poured into you, loved you,
helped you, mentoreds, you just helped you along your way
from the time you were born till today. Who would
those four people be.
Speaker 5 (48:34):
That's a big one.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
That's what you were thinking about. That was good. Thank you,
You're welcome.
Speaker 5 (48:43):
Oh man, you're out. You're asking to narrow that way down.
Speaker 1 (48:53):
We know it's gonna be people that are left off,
but that's the that's the purpose, that's the point.
Speaker 2 (48:58):
You really got to get four good ones.
Speaker 5 (49:04):
I'll tell you my high school wrestling coach and Sarah.
He helped me during my folks divorce and fighting. Yeah,
he spoke to he could speak to that and he
was super confusing a lot of the times. But what
(49:26):
are you doing, chorus, that's what you What are you doing?
Short little Greek dude stack though, But.
Speaker 3 (49:34):
That's great impression.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
Great, Yeah, I didn't expect that.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
He was so like one guy.
Speaker 4 (49:41):
He's like, man, you know rough time in my parents divorced,
weird doing.
Speaker 3 (49:46):
He's just really good. It was good.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
I didn't expect to hear that.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
Tell me by the wrong name. Chorus. Where does chorus
come from? Do you idiot?
Speaker 3 (49:55):
Right?
Speaker 5 (49:56):
He called you?
Speaker 3 (49:56):
It was awesome.
Speaker 5 (49:58):
That's why I love trash talk. Yeah, Sarah, because I'd say,
currently in my business, Aaron Botsford, she is a woman
of faith. She is she has accelerated a ton of
stuff and and and really benefited my family a ton
(50:21):
mm hmm, I'd say, I'd say my dad. My dad
didn't do everything right, but he worked. He worked around
the clock as a veterinarian growing up like he'd be
gone get a call one am ago, but he got
He got destroyed financially through a couple of things. So
(50:42):
but I remember when remember when we had to go.
We went live with mom and he. I just still
remember a hug he gave me and my brother like
that one sat on me. So and then I'll tell
you my wife is probably the last one because she's left.
(51:06):
The way a wife, a woman can speak into a
guy is different than anything else. And so I still
remember the note she wrote to me, and my faith changed.
I came to faith and she wrote me a note,
and the note basically said, she goes, I knew you
(51:28):
were different when I came out to you working out
in the garage, and you were listening to worship and
so I'm always big I have metal of country, and
so those were only ones on the tunes usually, and
so for me to be working out to worship music
was different. And so she had time. She's had times
(51:49):
where she could challenge me where nobody else could. Yeah,
and because I responded to the challenge, we've had explosive
growth in our marriage. And so those those are the
people most I'd say right now.
Speaker 2 (52:05):
It's a good list, Sure list, Corey.
Speaker 5 (52:08):
We appreciate you, man, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (52:10):

your journey, the ups, the downs, your faith.

Speaker 1 (52:18):
We're talking to Mike Scuatory earlier and he was real
big on saying, you know, I don't have to tell
you about how faithful I am or not, excuse me,
not how faithful. But I don't need to. I don't
need to tell you about my faith. I can just
show you with how I live my life. And clearly
you're that guy. And yeah, man, I'm so grateful to
have meant you, known you and just hear your story.
It was beautiful.
Speaker 5 (52:39):
