Speaker 1 (00:08):
Last night.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
You got two two football games for the price of one.
On Monday Night football, the Bills, the Commanders bawling out.
How about that one, we're gonna talk about them. We're
gonna talk about their impressive quarter quarterbacks with Camwolf, Brian Boldinger,
Mark Ross joining us later. And one's going on with
the Cowboys. It's a short week, so we better get
an answer quickly. That's why we're bringing in Jane Slater.
(00:30):
She always has the answers, even if the Cowboys themselves don't.
And Jeffrey Chadella boy joins us for his buy or
Sell column to talk about that this week. Are we
buying or selling the teams that are off to a
fast start Jeffrey Chadia. We'll let us know later in
the program, But first, welcome to the Insiders. I'm Mike Garaffollo,
(00:52):
Judy Batista joining us as well. We've got that cast
of characters that I just talked about that we'll be
getting to in just a short bit. But first let's
start with what's new here today on this Tuesday as
we head into week four in the NFL. And this
is not new because Russell Wilson is still going to
be a backup quarterback for the Steelers this week, Mike
(01:14):
Tomlin saying that he will be limited in practice this week,
so they are preparing for Justin Fields to start against
the Colts. Tomlin is kicking this quarterback decision can all
the way down the Monongahela River. I think that's one
of the three out there. Eventually he will make that call.
Doesn't have to make it just yet. Thank you Judy
for laughing. I think that was confirmation I got one
of them right. Justin Fields to start again for the Steelers.
(01:36):
Brock perty day to day with back soreness, had that
MRI that came back clean. I asked somebody out in
San Francisco. I says he going to be okay, and
they said he'd better be, meaning that we've got a
lot of other injury issues. We can't have our quarterback
not ready to play. So the hope is that he
will be okay and ready to rock this weekend for
the forty nine Ers. Meanwhile, Christian McCaffrey, we know that
(01:57):
he's not going to be ready to rock this weekend.
He heads to Germany to see a specialist for his
achilles tendonitis. I looked up how to say specialist in
Germany in German judy and it's sch betsialist. So you
learn something new every day you learn that. Let's see
if Christian McCaffrey can learn how to get that Achilles
ten tonight is in check and finally get on the
(02:18):
football field. In twenty twenty four.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Duty I did not know about either, Mike, but in
Green Bay Packers coach Matt Lafleur said Jordan Love will
be day to day this week with the knee injury
suffered during the season opener back in Brazil. He's missed
the last two games. Malik Willis says, filled in quite nicely.
They've gone to or zero with him. But with the
Vikings heading to Lenbow, there certainly appears to be some
(02:42):
hope that Jordan Love will be back on the field.
One of Love's predecessors, Brett Farv, revealed today during congressional testimony,
that he has been recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. That's
a degenerative nervous system disorder. Wishing far of all the
best as he deals with that. And in Mia Me
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel says, Tua tongue. Bilo will meet
(03:04):
with outside neurologists this week. This was always part of
Chewa's plan as he recovers from the concussion he recently suffered.
He actually did this two years ago when he suffered
a concussion. He went through a very thorough process, got
a lot of testing done, consulted with outside experts.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Don't forget Tua is on ir.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
He's not eligible to play at this point until late October.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Be at the first we would see.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, And right now as we sit here, Derren James
not eligible to play on Sunday against the Kansas City
Chiefs because he was suspended one game for repeated violations
of the NFL playing rules designed to protect health and
safety that hit on Pat Fryarmouth. He was judy previously fined.
He was ejected from a game in twenty twenty two,
I believe, two years ago. So the thought process here
(03:52):
is that he is a repeat offender, and you get fined.
You get fined at some point. If they feel like
you are not learning your lesson, they suspend you. Now,
this is subject to an appeal that was scheduled to
be heard at some point late this afternoon early It
might be going on right now for all we know,
So we'll see if James and his representation can get
that knocked down. Your thoughts on the NFL's actions in
(04:13):
this case. We have seen them do it with repeated
players over the last couple of years.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, it is still very unusual for the NFL to
suspend a player, which tells you how concerned they are
about Derwin Jane conduct on the field.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
As a matter of fact, the letter from John.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Runyon was pretty strongly worded about you know, this will
not be tolerated, So they're obviously concerned. I believe he
has been flagged seven times for unsportsmanlike conduct, which is
obviously a lot.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
In his relatively short career.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
He hasn't been on the field that much to merit
seven unsportsmanlike conduct flags. So clearly they are concerned. And
as you said, I mean there's sort of a step
that they go through, right, You get fined, you get
bigger fines, bigger fines, you get warnings, and then finally
they have nowhere else to go but a suspension.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
That is where they are.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
We could get a decision though on the appeal, even
late tonight or tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, usually Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, so that the
teams know as early in the week as possible whether
the player will be available for the game. The Chargers
already have a question mark with Justin Herbert, now potentially
a question mark with Derwin James. Did they want an
answer there as soon as possible. Back to last night
and the first part of a he called a twin
night double header. Iud know what you call it, but
(05:25):
this was the first game here Josh Allen and the
Buffalo Bills. Allen five touchdowns, zero interceptions coming in. Do
I hear six? Do I hear holding? There no no
call behind him, and he makes the throw to Dalkkin
Kid six yard touchdowns to put the Bills up thirteen
to nothing. Allen's forty six touchdown on the run second
most of the NFL since he entered the league in
twenty eighteen, per next Jen Stats. I wonder who's first,
(05:48):
I'm gonna have to ask. Speaking of first, here is
DeMar Hamlin. His first career interception on a throw from
Trevor Lawrence to Brian Thomas that was overthrown. Hamlin didn't
miss that one, and the home crowd got Trevor Lawrence
wasn't thrilled, but the home crowd thrilled to see that
for Hamlin with all that he has been through. All right,
late in the second quarter, game already out of hand,
(06:09):
twenty four seconds remaining, and Allen to Ty Johnson sixteen yards.
Allen had four touchdown passes in the night, two hundred
and sixty three yards. Fake Trevor Lawrence and real Doug
Peterson not loving it. Here's the Bill's locker room.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
Here, hey, and as the heck of him waying man
at home on Monday night after about ten days off.
All right, when we talk about, right, what's the advantage
the team? Right, that's the advantage the team, the team,
the team. I saw it tonight, man, I saw it
(06:43):
with my own eyes right from the start, all three
phases working together as one man. Right, Humility goes a
long way right now, got a short week, take care
of yourselves.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
There we go.
Speaker 7 (06:55):
Hey, we'll talking out again.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
A man, this is it. I love for y'all.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Fellas owner Terry Pigol in the background, I think he
made a good choice hiring Sean McDermott as a head coach. Yeah,
here you go. Let's call it some kind of survivor
deal here. We got five undefeated teams remaining as we
head into Week four. Who's going to be the last
team standing? Brian Baldinger knows all right, Maybe he doesn't
(07:21):
know for sure, but he knows a lot of things
that we're bringing him in here and we're going to
talk about Josh Allen. I believe I saw today he's
now the odds on favorite for MVP if I'm not mistaken.
So he's playing at an MVP level as we get
through the first quarter of the season here, What are
your thoughts on what you're seeing from Josh Allen?
Speaker 7 (07:36):
He's the MVP.
Speaker 8 (07:37):
I mean he's got nine touchdown, seven throwing, two running.
You have member now right now, Mike and Judy it
this is a full year now with Joe Brady as
the offense coordinator.
Speaker 7 (07:46):
Took over midseason last year.
Speaker 8 (07:48):
The offense changed, went through the offseason, the preseason, training camp.
Speaker 7 (07:52):
And now it's clicking.
Speaker 8 (07:54):
The prestat motions last night really confused Jacksonville.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
They got a lot of advantages with.
Speaker 8 (07:59):
It when the opening was there because they didn't take
Josh away.
Speaker 7 (08:02):
He took advantage of it.
Speaker 8 (08:04):
The throat out here on the outside, one throw after another.
I feel like when they take somebody away, Josh Allen
knows where the answer is. Even on the touchdown to
Dalton Kincaine, they doubled Kincad in the end zone and
Josh Allen bought some time. Kinkaid uncovered and he flipped
it to him in the end zone on the run.
Right now, it's basically mistake proof.
Speaker 7 (08:27):
Up front.
Speaker 8 (08:28):
The offensive line coach by Aaron Kromer, is amongst the
best in football. Right now, They've had all five starters
all three games, no injuries up there.
Speaker 7 (08:37):
Everything is clicking.
Speaker 8 (08:38):
But Josh Allen just looks very comfortable you take something away.
He knows what the answer is right now, and it
doesn't matter what the name of the back of the
jersey is.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I think what makes this so impressive, especially just in
Week three, is number of the off season talking point
about like, well they really change their wide receiver room,
would that create sort of a slow start for the
Buffalo Bills while they had just that Not so much.
We can kill that narrative out. Josh Allen completed passes
to ten different people last night, and he was in
(09:09):
complete command. And I think another thing that's been really
interesting about Joe Brady so far, and obviously this is
a very small sample size we have so far this season,
is they are changing the way they played depending on
the opponent, right. I mean, the Jacksonville Jaguars came in
and they had been pretty good against the runs. So
in the first half, which is the only time at
this game where you can really look at staffs that
mean anything, they barely ran the ball, but they threw the.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Ball a ton.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I think he attempted twenty seven passes something like that
in the first half and maybe only eleven rushing attempts.
In previous games, they had been much more balanced on offense,
so they've really shown an ability and a desire to
morph their offense as the opponent demands it. And any
way they're playing, they are playing lights out right now.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yep, Buffalo Bill's the last couple of weeks here, haven't
had the sweat much in the second half. Now, got
at Baltimore at Houston at the yes, so here comes
a little bit of a gauntlet here for the Buffalo Bills.
We'll see how they handle that. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars,
after another disappointing defeat, nobody's saying right like you're being
asked about everything if you're Doug Peterson, including potentially benching
(10:15):
Trevor Lawrence. W here's Peterson from today.
Speaker 9 (10:17):
We have to take a hard look at at ourselves,
first internally as far as coaching goes, and then making
sure we are.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
You know, presenting the plans.
Speaker 9 (10:28):
Great communication. And then and then look, it's it's a
it's a two way street too. I mean, you know,
coaches coach and players play. So we've got to make
sure our players are playing fast and and you know,
not making the mistakes that are shown up. The speeches
are done. The speeches are over. We don't need any
more raw row stuff. It's just time to go go
play football. Fix the fix the mistakes, and you know,
(10:53):
do everything we can to uh, you know, play our
best football this weekend.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yeah, Doug Peterson and a short week now after a
loss like that. The Jaguars were eight and three eight
and three after beating the Houston Texans. Then they lost
that game to the Cincinnati Bengals in overtime on a
Monday night game without Joe Burrow. They're one in eight
since starting eight and three last season. They are searching
for answers. Judy, your thoughts on what the Jaguars and
(11:19):
Doug Peterson could be could do.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
From here, Well, first of all, that's one of the
worst losses that we've seen in recent memory from the
Jacksonville Jaguars. And one thing I think we all know
is NFL owners do not like to be embarrassed on
national television, and that was an embarrassing performance. It was
a non competitive game from the Jaguars. I think the
biggest question that emerged. I mean, the defense got shredded
(11:40):
by Josh Allen, but the biggest thing to me is
what has happened to Trevor Lawrence. He does not look
anything like the player two years ago when they went
to the playoffs and beat the Chargers in that tremendous
comeback victory. He has regressed and they've got to get
to the bottom of that because they just made an
enormous financial commitment to him. So I mean, we can
sort of talk about, well, you're going to ben Trevor Lawrence. Okay,
(12:01):
they're not moving on from Trevor Lawrence. They've got to
find answers because he is going to be there. They
got to get him back to playing like the guy
who looked like he could be a franchise savior. He
doesn't look anything like that now. He's only completing fifty
three percent of his passes. That's the first step and
then we will see where it goes from there.
Speaker 8 (12:20):
But Judy, they're not responding to Trevor Lawrence. They've scored
forty points in three games, thirteen points a game. They're
not sustaining drives. He has not been productive. This is
a carryover from last year. They thought bringing in a
veteran center like Mitch Morris, drafting a receiver like they
did and Brian Thomas, they thought these were some of
(12:42):
the missing components from a year ago, and that hasn't helped.
And so right now, I mean the interceptional last sight
to Damar Hamlin. I mean it's his first interception of
the year, but he I mean he had a clear
picture at Brian. He just sailed it and Damar was
just waiting there for it. He just was basically a
catcher that play. And when he walked off the field,
(13:02):
I mean, he carried himself with no confidence and you
can see the team had none either, And so they're
just not responding to his leadership and to his play
right now, and it always has to start with the quarterback.
We know we put too much on him at times,
but they ran the ball a little bit better last night.
He has to play better and the team has to
respond to him a whole lot more than they have
(13:23):
right now, because it starts with Trevor Lawrence, since the
offense has built around his abilities.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Yep, and you start pressing, You start pressing, you start pressing,
and all of a sudden, you find yourself, first of all,
behind so late, no matter how hard you pressing, I
could be able to work your way back in all
kinds of issues, including the fact that you look at
their Week four opponent at the Houston Texans, a tough
divisional game on deck for the Jaguark. You want more Baldi,
You're getting more Baldy. He's coming back later in the
(13:51):
program here NFL dot Com Week four Power Rankings. I
know you folks in Buffalo, I know what you're saying.
What have we got to show to get up the
number one right there? Yeah, just a little bit more,
and again, if you survive the next three weeks, you
will be number one. I will make that guarantee. For
you right there. Meanwhile, the Saints now on the back
(14:11):
end of the top ten. They got some injury issues
to deal with. Weeks one and two, the Commanders and
moved the ball a little bit. They couldn't get in
the end zone. Inside the red zone, not a problem.
Monday night against against the Cincinnati Bengals, Jadon Daniels was spectacular.
We'll talk about it next.
Speaker 10 (14:27):
Robinson walks in touchdown Washington. Here's Zach Clark. He's been
impressive tonight. To the end zone for the touchdown. Commanders.
Daniels is gonna walk it in for the touchdown. Daniels clips.
He's got another and this time it's Trent Scott. This
one has launched for McLaurin. He's got it. Touchdown, touchdown,
(14:55):
Terry McLaurin.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Terry McLaren's waited a long time for or back like
that in Washington. Welcome back to the Insiders, Judy Batista,
that's Cam Wolf and Mark Ross.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
Cam you were there.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
I don't know what else we can say about Jayden
and Daniels two incompletions on the night, But in the stadium,
what were your impressions at.
Speaker 11 (15:14):
Judy, I walked into the commander's locker room after the game,
and the word I would use to describe it as jubilation.
Every position group had a sort of excitement that was
more than just one win. It was a coronation that
we found our quarterback not just for this year, but
for the next five.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
Ten, fifteen years.
Speaker 11 (15:32):
Jonathan Allen, their veteran defensive tackle, said he's the answer
in reference to Jayden Daniels. Cod Sam Cosmey, his right guard, said,
the only word I can say is ho if we
believe because of him? And I talked with Bobby Wagner,
their veteran linebacker who has won a lot throughout his career,
and he just couldn't stop smiling. He was like, a
lot of times, these guys have not experienced this level
(15:55):
of winning that maybe I had before. And to see
them had that realization that we're always going to have
a shot in every game because of this guy, that
is pretty cool. And so I thought this was a
turning of the page day for the Washington Companion Commanders franchise.
Dan Quinn has tried to rebuild this thing and through
three games we already saw the potential of Jayden Daniels. Look,
(16:15):
you mentioned to Judy, he had more touchdowns than incompletions.
This was an incredible game. And now dan Quinn's going
to try to keep them even killed.
Speaker 6 (16:24):
Good luck with that.
Speaker 11 (16:25):
They already went to Arizona early this week ahead of
their game against the Cardinals, and dan Quinn said, we
got to keep them from riding the roller coaster, even
though it's going to be tough to do. I did
get a chance to talk to Quinn in pregame about
Jayden and he said he was playing quarterback the right
way and he is just getting started.
Speaker 12 (16:42):
Yeah, no doubt, he's just getting started. And look, when
you scout a player, and that organization scouted Jayden Daniels,
you want to see those elements that you fell in
love with in college manifest itself once they get to
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
And even in the first couple of games.
Speaker 12 (16:56):
You saw the flashes of the Heisman Trophy, record breaking
Jade and Daniels, and then it just all came together
for him last night. The arm, the poise, the moxie,
the playmaking, the running ability. You saw it all come
together for Jade and Daniels. So this is not some
oh my goodness, what is it? You saw this from
(17:19):
Jayden Daniels consistently his last year at LSU, and now
it just all came together for him. I mean, fifteen
consecutive drives without a punt, and you know last night
the two incompletions.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
But he is just so in command.
Speaker 12 (17:33):
When you watch a player goes beyond stats, he goes
beyond touchdowns. When you watched Jaden Daniels, he just looked
like a star. He looked confident, he looked poised, he
looked ready. And that's why that organization has to be
so excited about him. That wasn't some dude just out
there balling and it was a fluke. He's like, yep,
I'm going to go do this, and he did it.
(17:54):
That throw at the end there, you can't get better
than that for Jayden and Daniels.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
All right, Kim, let's look at the opposite sideline. Because
we've seen the Cincinnati Bengals start slow in previous seasons.
But I'm not sure any of us thought, especially when
we looked at their schedule early in the season, that
they were going to start zero to three.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
Where is this team right now?
Speaker 6 (18:13):
They're a little bit in disarray.
Speaker 11 (18:14):
I talked with the Bengals coaches before the game about
this team, and he said, look, we have the talent.
It's about putting the work in and not believing that
everything is already given to us. And when I watched
that team last night, there was a feel of you know,
we're back because t Higgins is back. Everything is fixed
and the offense was back, but the defense was completely
destroyed by Jaden Daniels.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Jaden was in control the entire game.
Speaker 11 (18:38):
I talked with cornerback Mike Hilton after the game and
he said, they just kept us off off balance. He said,
every time we thought we had a beat on the run,
Jaden would throw something over our head.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
When we said something in Jayden, they would run the ball.
Speaker 11 (18:51):
And He's like, we just did not have control of
things and we got to go back to the drawing board.
And I thought one of the more interesting elements was
Cam Taylor. Britt, who has a knack of talking a
little bit, said before the game, this is a simple
college offense. After the game, Zach Taylor was not happy with.
Speaker 7 (19:06):
It at all.
Speaker 11 (19:06):
He said, that's not what we do. We don't talk
smack about the other team. And it came back to
bite him. You mentioned Terry McLaurin. He beat Cam Taylor
Britt for that big fifty five yard pass down the
field and a touchdown. So this is a team right
now that is doing a lot more talking than winning
and Owen three is really where they belong right now.
So still a long season. Joe Burrow said, we are
(19:27):
not giving up yet. He did have a private meeting
with Zach Taylor after the game. He said he was
going to keep that private, but the main thing is
we got to get this thing going and we're not
giving up. They got the Carolina Panthers this week, but
Owen three is a deep hole to dig out of,
especially in that AFC North.
Speaker 12 (19:43):
No doubt, Cam and you used this array, and you
sense that disarray almost in the off season leading up
to it, where you were talking about the t Higgins
contract and then Chase wasn't happy. You're talking about the
Burrow injury. We weren't really talking about while this team
is going to maximize and go compete and be good.
We just assumed that. But every thing we were really
talking about were things that you were worried about.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
And now it.
Speaker 12 (20:04):
Continues into the season when you've got going too and
you've got a star player that's just talking about another
team leading into it. That's not the way to run
the organization. And it's not as if you can put
it on one thing. Each game they've lost in different ways,
where the first game the defense steps up, last week
the pass interference penalty at the end there where they
played somewhat well, and then they just get blown out
(20:27):
last night. So you lose three games in three entirely
different ways, and you can't really point the finger at
one thing. Yes, there's certain elements. They need more pass us,
they need more consistency on offense, but it's a lot
of things, and it's a really a team effort that
they're at and a coaching effort as well. Be at
h to three at this point, Judy and Cam. So
we'll see, but it's going to be, like you said, Cam,
(20:48):
it's a long way to go in that AFC for
them to get back in it.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Mark Camp, thank you very much. And when we return
on the Insiders, we're going to talk about another team
that's off to kind of a rocky start to Dallas Cowboys.
Pruscott asked if everybody was jumping off the bandwagon. We'll
see our Jane Slater will join us to talk about
the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Look, you don't need the insiders to tell you that
the Cowboys are not happy with how things have gone
the last couple of weeks, particularly this game, particularly Derek
Henry running all over the place and Jerry Jones saying
that he couldn't afford him. But Jerry never wanted to hide.
He faced the music on local Dallas radio earlier today.
Speaker 13 (21:28):
We're certainly learning about what not to do, that's for sure.
We played some pretty top competition early this Cleveland, this Baltimore,
This group group of teams in that division are really
tasked for as we get ready for our first game
(21:49):
of course in our division against the Giants this week.
But all in all, I do think that we're disappointed,
without a doubt, and can really see how we need
to really put this thing better together as a team,
more coordinated. And I'm not just saying within the defense,
(22:12):
I'm saying defense, offense, the entire area. I think we
have a chance to improve on this, and that's the
big thing. We're not hitting on all the cylinders. If
we were, that'd be real concerning.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
There's nothing the fans of the thirty one other teams
love more than cutaways to Cowboys fans when things are
not going well. Jane Slater, welcome to the show. Joining us,
Brian Baldinger back as well. We are going to talk
about the Cowboys. Jerry alluded to that game against the
Giants on Thursday night. I've got that game, so I'm
going to be taking notes here because I need things
(22:46):
to talk about in the next couple of days, and
who better to talk about it than Jane and Baldi.
Baldi to start with you on the Cowboys defense and
what you're seeing from them right now.
Speaker 8 (22:54):
Well, I mean, look, every bad habit in life can
be changed in an instant, Mike. Now, they're giving up
five and a half yards of carry. They went up
against a Hall of Fame running back and Derrick Henry
last week. If you're not gap sound, if you don't
have proper run fits the way the Cowboys didn't, you're
gonna get gashed by Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry and the
de don't care. If it's a read option, misdirection, counterplay,
(23:18):
slant play, dive play. You need hats in the A gap,
in the B gap, in a C gap and Hall
of fame running backs like Derrick Henry or a great
one like Alvin Kamara the week before. If you're not
in your gaps, they're going to find that open gap.
And that's what they've been doing. So the Eagles fixed
it in one week. They were terrible the first two weeks.
They played great against the Saints. It's about fundamentals, Mike,
(23:41):
and it's about getting to your gaps, getting into your gaps,
and then when you're there, wrap up and make tackles.
Because they were terrible in the secondary the last two weeks,
making tackles in the open field. But really it should
never get to the open field. You should stop Derrick
Henry at the line of scrimmage and not let him
get going.
Speaker 7 (23:58):
And that's been the.
Speaker 8 (23:58):
Biggest issue this season, at least the last two weeks,
and these two disappointing losses.
Speaker 14 (24:03):
Jane, Yeah, and no disrespect here when we talk about
Devin Singletary, because the Cowboys have seen now Alvin Kamara
and Derreck Henry. But I think it is relevant to
bring out where Singletary is a threat.
Speaker 15 (24:15):
I went to next Gen stats.
Speaker 14 (24:17):
And through weeks one through three, he's got the third
most forced miss tackles, and that is concerning when you
consider how the Cowboys have been playing as of late, Baldy, I've.
Speaker 15 (24:27):
Enjoyed exchanging videos with you and trying.
Speaker 14 (24:29):
To figure out what's wrong with them lately this season,
this run defense you touched on a little bit, it's
been atrocious. Not only have those mistackles cost them two
hundred and forty one yards through three weeks, but then
defense as a whole has surrendered five hundred and fifty
seven yards and a league leading.
Speaker 15 (24:44):
Eight rushing touchdowns.
Speaker 14 (24:45):
Now, I asked Mike McCarthy today that on a short week,
is it realistic to believe that they could clean this up?
And he said it is. But going back to what
you said, it goes back to fundamentals. Well, what exactly
does fundamentals mean, Baldy? Well, I asked my Parsons and
he told me, quote, people aren't bringing their.
Speaker 15 (25:03):
Feet with themselves. You gotta wrestle.
Speaker 14 (25:05):
He says, it's the basics, but sometimes people forget the
basics using your hands, bringing your feet. Sometimes people are
getting too fancy. I asked how his teammates though, by
the way, we're handling some of his messaging about accountability
as of late Baldy and he said his teammates get it,
but we'll see how they show up on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Third most mistackles for single. I interviewed Singletary by phone
earlier today. I would have I could have asked them
about I should have patched.
Speaker 15 (25:30):
Jane and see, louis my man NFL pro.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
You are a pro Ceedee Lamb is a pro. And
he faced the music like a pro today. From what
I gather, a little bit of accountability and saying he
could be better.
Speaker 14 (25:43):
Yes he did, but let's start with you know, there's
been a lot of knocks on Ceedee Lamb right now
this season, the issue with separation. There was a lot
of sticky coverage with the Ravens, and I do think
that there might be a little bit of an opportunity
for him this week against the Giants.
Speaker 15 (25:59):
And allow me to explain Deontay.
Speaker 14 (26:00):
Banks again going to our NFL Pro great research information here.
When you look at the way that Deontay Banks is playing,
he has been typically shadowing his opponent's leading receivers. Now
Ceedee Lamb has not been getting shadowed this season per se,
But against Ceedee Lamb. We saw our against Amari Cooper
rather Last week, Deontay Banks surrendered two touchdowns, both to
(26:23):
the left, one a twenty four yard touchdown pass, the
other from six out. Brown's target him fourteen times and
he surrendered seven. So this is an opportunity maybe for
Ceedee Lamb to get his confidence back against this guy.
And now I did ask him. You know, Mariy Cooper
is one of your mentors. What I love about Lamb
is he loves going to other veterans soaking up information.
(26:45):
Typically he would pick up the phone and call Cooper,
but he says he is familiar with Banks his game.
Speaker 15 (26:49):
He's got a lot of respect for him.
Speaker 14 (26:51):
But he is going to go ahead and look at
the tape and see where Cooper was winning, what were
some of the leverages?
Speaker 15 (26:56):
Where did he lose?
Speaker 14 (26:57):
But to your point about some of the criticism, he
did not talk after that Sunday loss. I appreciate the
fact that he said a big part of that loss.
Speaker 15 (27:05):
Had to do with him.
Speaker 14 (27:06):
And more importantly, he is a passionate guy. He wears
his emotions on his sleeve. But he wants to put
to rest that there is any beef with Dak Prescott,
comparing the relationship to one of brothers. And if you
guys have siblings, you can certainly understand this. As he said,
you'll get the energy, the passion, the love, but also
the making up and no problems moving forward. But he's
got to do a better job of keeping some of
(27:27):
that body language in tacch I.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
Got one older, one younger. I know exactly what you're
talking about. Giants Cowboys Thursday night. I'll be on the
field for NFL Game Day kickoff here on NFL Network.
Join us. There are notes in addition to the pictures
in this little handing Indian not book. James Later, Thank
you very much. Brian Moldiger, thank you very much. Judy
Evatiste to.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Take it away all right, and now when it's time
for Tuesday Takeaways presented by Chipotle, and for that we
bring in our friend Jeffrey Chadillo, who has his weekly
First Read column. It is also a must first read.
This week, you are talking about the teams that are
off to hot starts, the ones that you're buying, and
the ones that maybe you're selling. So let's start on
(28:08):
a positive note. What teams you're buying with their hot starts.
Speaker 16 (28:12):
I got two teams on buying Judy, the Vikings, the Saints,
and the Jets. I'll start with the Vikings because I
love what Sam Donald is doing. I'll pat myself on
the back because I said this team has enough talent
to be.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
A playoff team.
Speaker 16 (28:23):
They had to figure out the quarterback situation, and Sam
Donald has been amazing so far. Wins over Houston, wins
over San Francisco. You have to buy a team like that.
I'll move to the Saints. Yeah, tough loss against Philadelphia,
A big injury there with Eric McCoy going down. Their
Pro Bowl center might be lost for six to eight weeks.
But I really like the chemistry between Kubiak, the new coordinator,
(28:45):
and quarterback Derek Carr. I think Kubiak knows how to
get car in the right situations.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
A healthy Alan Kamara is good.
Speaker 16 (28:52):
And this team still plays in the NFC South where
they're always going to be formidable with the lights of
the other teams they got to go against. And then
finally they the Ets spells. Aaron Rodgers is a baller.
He is getting it done. You saw it against New England. Yes,
I know New England is not great, but full control
of that offense, the offensive line looks good. The defense
(29:13):
doesn't have to sound Reddick lost Jermaine Johnson. They're getting
great play from Will McDonald. I think this team is legit.
And remember Miami is down a quarterback to of being
gone wild Collet's pretty good for these guys right now.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
Jets do look legit.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Let's talk about some teams that maybe you don't think
are almost as legit as the Jets are.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
What teams are you sell in right now?
Speaker 16 (29:33):
Well, I got to take a shot at my Michigan
loum Jim Harbaugh right now.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I think the Chargers are going to be a really
good team with him.
Speaker 16 (29:39):
But right now they're getting back to the same problems
they've had in the past, which is a lot of injuries.
They lost Justin Herbert in that game against Pittsburgh, they
lost all they lost for Shaun Slater.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
Joey Bosen was gone.
Speaker 16 (29:50):
They're getting ready to play the Kansas City Chiefs, and
this team, as much as I like hard boss coaching,
they can't have these kinds of losses to start players
going into game. So it really worries me with that
and the same goal through Seattle, They've got injuries on
the offensive line, with Abe Lucas and George Phant. They're
down to their third right tackle, Kenth Walker. The third
has been banged up. They lost two more defensive linemen
(30:13):
in that game against Miami. And you're talking about a
team that really hasn't played anybody tough yet.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Played Denver with.
Speaker 16 (30:19):
Bow Knicks, Miami without Tua. They lose, and they beating
New England, a team that's going to be picking in
the top ten. So I'm not really sold on them either.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
All Right, every week you do three up and three downs,
so give me one of each.
Speaker 16 (30:33):
Well the easy one. It's low hanging fruit on both regards.
I'll keep your Sakwon Barkley, the Eagles running back. People
talked about why are they spending this much money. You're
finding it out, averaging one hundred and seventeen yards a game.
He had the two big touchdowns and that went over
New Orleans. Yeah, a drop pass cost him a game
against the Falcons. But I got to love everything he's
done so far on the flip side or down again.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
You saw it with Jane and Baldi's talking about Dallas.
Speaker 16 (30:57):
Mike Zimber, the coordinator, was brought in there to make
that team tougher. They've given up almost five hundred yards
rushing in the last two games. I think it's more
of a personnel problem than a schame problem. They've given
up runs to everybody. I don't think it's gonna change
it anytime soon.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Jeffrey, thank you. I read your column every week. Everybody
else should be reading your column every week at NFL
dot com slash first Read. And when we return, we're
going to talk about the coaches who have been doing
a great job. I bet this guy is gonna get
a mention when we come back on the Insiders.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
It feels real to.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Me, fellas it feels real. You guys know I wouldn't
lie to you.
Speaker 16 (31:39):
I started out training camp saying I would never ever
lie to you guys, And I can tell you right
now we are capable.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Of absolutely anything that is out in front of us.
Speaker 17 (31:47):
Right now, we're capable of stacking it all together, leaning
in with one another, and.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
Special specials is going to happen to this football team.
Think about it.
Speaker 7 (31:56):
It was not close who had.
Speaker 16 (31:58):
Their team today and who made the plays he had
to make cleaning on them all year long, Sammy.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Donald, I love playing with y'all, man Hey, this is
just the beginning.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
Man.
Speaker 7 (32:12):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
Bike's a three two three bikes. Good job Sam Donald.
I love Sam Donalds a great dude. Happy for him
that he's found some new found success. Uh, in the
best situation he's ever had. Jury Batista, Mark Russ, Brian Baldinger.
Back with me, Mike Aarrafola. Let's talk about some coaches.
He saw Kevin O'Connell. H right there, Mark. Uh, it's
not yet time to put your vote in for Coach
(32:34):
of the Year, but give us who has impressed you
so so much early on here.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Well, let's just go right there with Kevin.
Speaker 12 (32:42):
I was covering the Vikings camp lord in training camp,
and uh, he told the players he keeps it real,
would lie to him. Well, we thought he wasn't keeping
it real lying to us. When he talked about how
much confidence he had in Sam donald book, we thought
it was all about J. J.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
McCarthy. He gets hurt. It opens up the door for
Sam Donald.
Speaker 12 (32:59):
And sure enough, all that confidence he talked about in
camp about Sam Donald, and sure we'll be comfortable playing him.
You've seen it manifest itself on the field and Sam
Donald is not lighting it up with the yards, but
he's got eight touchdowns and only two interceptions, no lost fumbles,
and he's made he plays.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
And Kevin talked about that in the locker room.
Speaker 12 (33:20):
Where when they need him to make a play, he
makes a play. And that's really the sign of a
great quarterback, especially the way the defense is playing.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
So if he.
Speaker 12 (33:28):
Continues this and Sam Donald has always had the talent,
He's always had the moxy, the poors, the arm, the
moving ability. Now he's just putting it together, not turning
the ball over. Baldy and you may be talking about
the second half of his dynamic duo there in Minnesota.
Speaker 8 (33:43):
Well, I mean you mentioned the defense mark and you
have to because Brian Flores is doing a fantastic job
and you just think about it. I mean they've given
up thirty points in three games. The San Francisco forty
nine ers scored seventeen.
Speaker 7 (33:54):
Last week.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
CJ.
Speaker 8 (33:55):
Stroud had a second lowest quarterback grating.
Speaker 7 (33:58):
Of his career.
Speaker 8 (34:00):
I mean, they put up seven points against what Brian
Flores is doing, and you think about it. All the
new parts they bring in Stefan Gilmour here after training camp,
Blake Cashman, the new middle linebacker, he brings in Andrew
van Ginkel, another Wisconsin lineback that he had at Miami,
and he's just a defender. He lines up everywhere. They
rebuilt the entire defensive line. And oh, by the way,
(34:22):
they lead the league in sacks. Right now, they do
not give up the deep Ballmark, they keep everything in
front of them. And then his different uses of front personnel,
Blitzero looks the whole thing right now has quarterbacks completely confused.
And none was more evident than watching CJ. Stroud struggle
(34:42):
last week against his Viking defense.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
This is such a positive segment, so let's keep it going. Mark,
give us another coach you're impressed with.
Speaker 12 (34:49):
Right now, Well, let's go at Green Bay, Matt Leafleoor
and Green Bay with the high expectations coming into the
season with Jordan Love. Jordan Love goes down that the
heartbreaking loss there the Eagles and game on and doom and.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
Gloom, the world is over.
Speaker 12 (35:02):
We signed a guy a couple of days ago to
go play, Malik Willis, who was a bust in Tennessee.
And all right, well, let let me just make this
guy run all over the place in game wanted in
Game two, make some big plays with his arms.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
So Matt Lafour, not just the work.
Speaker 12 (35:15):
He's done with Malik Willis and getting him to play
mistake free football, high completion percentage, making plays with his legs,
but also just rallying the whole entire team because the
defense is playing out of its mind at this point too.
So it's not just the work he's done with Malik
Willison the offense, it's the total team game and being
a head coach and saying, all right, all is not
(35:37):
over with. We can go play now this week against
Baldi's guy floor as we'll see how much magic he
can work against that defense.
Speaker 8 (35:47):
I think we all watched Washington play last night and
Jaydeon Daniels star and I was I was busy watching
Cliff Kingsbury called plays to Jaydon Daniels. You know they
they've played the Giants, and they played last against Cincinnati,
and they have scored on every drive the last two games.
Every drive they've scored. Now they kick seven field goals
against the Giants. Put him a bunch of touchdowns last night.
(36:10):
But this offense is clicking out. Jaden Daniels is phenomenal.
He's accurate, the big throw down the field. To Terry
McCallum was great. This one to Luke McCaffrey. Right here,
down to the two, the design of the plays and
where the ball is going and how he's manipulating the defense.
I think it's made it very easy for Jaden Daniels
(36:30):
when he does get outside, he runs for first downs.
Maybe he runs too much for some people's liking right now,
but this looks pretty easy right.
Speaker 7 (36:39):
Here as he skips into the end zone.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
I think Cliff is doing a phenomenal job working with Jayden.
He's done great success with Mahomes at Baker Mayfield and
Johnny Manziel back in the day in Caleb Williams at US.
He's got a track record. I'm working with quarterbacks and
it's shown up with Jayden right now.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
That's why I like Jayden. The last time Cliff had
a rookie quarterback was Kyler Murray won the Rookie the Year.
I liked Jayden for Rookie of the Year because I
felt like that was the best coach to lead the
way for him right away, the best offensive coordinator. Speaking
of Rookie of the Year, how about Rookie of the Week.
You gotta win Rookie of the Week before you win
Rookie of the Year. Right, So here is your Pepsi
(37:17):
zero Sugar Rookie of the Week nominees, which you can
vote for at NFL dot com slash Rookies. Caleb Williams,
the overall plays got to get better, but the numbers
were good enough to put him on the list, and
there you go. The Broncos have a couple of guys.
I'd probably go Jayden Daniels, but I'd be tempted to
vote for Malik Neighbors given what he did against the
Cleveland Browns the other day. So go to NFL dot
(37:39):
com slash Rookies to cast your vote for the Pepsi
zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. Dak Prescott and Daniel
Jones getting set to face off at MetLife Stadium. I
bet you looked at this a couple of weeks ago
and said this is going to be ugly. This is
looking like it's going to be a pretty good game.
This is how fast it happens, Folks. Week three ends
(38:00):
week for it. Right around the corner, Cowboys Giants on
Prime Video, your Thursday night football game of the week.
We are excited for that one. So we are going
to bring in our guy, Sam Schwartstein, Prime Video and
Thursday Night Football's analytics expert. He's going to use the
next Gen Stats machine to preview this divisional rivalry coming up.
(38:20):
I'm going to start with Malik Neighbors. He's passing the
eye test, but we don't do the eye test. We
dig deep with next Gen Stats. So what has he
done that's really impressed you.
Speaker 17 (38:29):
Sam, Yeah, he's been able to handle the workload. One
of the big things you're looking for in a rookie
is is he able to be able to handle the
targets that it takes to be a number.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
One, and he has.
Speaker 17 (38:39):
He leads second in the NFL in target share at
thirty five percent, meaning when he's on the field, he
gets the time, thy gets the ball thirty five percent
of the time. And these are the kinds of plays
you want to see. He's doing it in a ton
of different ways, with over half his yards are coming
against man coverage, and that's what Daniel Jones is doing.
If he sees man coverage, he's going to Neighbors and
he's able to run away from guys when jump and
(39:00):
this is probably his signature play catching a little slant
and turning outside. He did it twice against the Commanders.
This is the kind of thing you're going to want
to see early. Getting reminiscent of the OBJ days back.
Speaker 7 (39:10):
In New York, YEP.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Looking forward to seeing Daniel Jones and Eleak neighbors against
this Cowboys defense coming up on Thursday night. The Cowboys
on their offensive side of the ball have their own
number one in Ceede Lamb. They paid him like it
is he earning his money, Sam.
Speaker 17 (39:26):
They are trying their darness to make him earn his money.
They're doing a lot of designer plays, trying to force
the ball to him. You see him coming out of
the backfield. You know, this may seem like a player
everyone's running around. It's really just one route to Ceedee Lamb.
His target share has dropped from thirty percent fourth in
the NFL to twenty percent this year, probably his lowest
in his career. But the reason why you still want
(39:47):
him as your number one is plays like this. He
leads the NFL in yards after catch over expected not
just yack, but over expected yack. He's a playmaker. They
need to find way more ways to get in the
ball Yep and Lamb.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
We talked about this earlier in the show, speaking of reporters,
basically saying that there needs to be more production there.
Perhaps it'll start against the Giants. This game has big
names on defense. Got Brian Burns and Kevon Thibodeau for
the Giants. You got Micah Parsons dray Von Diggs for
the Cowboys. Who is the person you are most excited
to see?
Speaker 17 (40:18):
Look Mike as a former center seeing Dexter Lawrence, I'm
so happy I'm never had to play that guy, big,
sexy DEXI.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
He's doing it every which way he can.
Speaker 17 (40:27):
And look, he's second in the NFL amongst defensive tackles
and pressures, but he's got six pressures against double teams
no matter what they put against him, that leads the NFL.
He's going to be able to get in the backfield.
And another thing what he does in the run game.
Teams are able to run the ball outside, but not inside.
It's one guy that's ninety seven in the middle.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
You know, as you mentioned a former center, and if
you're watching this, you're saying, there's no way he played
it at his current way. So how many LB's I
finally get to ask this question. Tom Pellisero usually does
this segment. How many LB's that redoubts that you're playing day, Sam.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Oh, I go up and down.
Speaker 17 (41:00):
Our fluctuate between seventy pounds on some days if it's
having a good game and I'm meeting too much after
probably fifty.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Pounds twenty pound, twenty pounds swing from our guy, Sam
Schwarztein pound for pound, one of the best in the business.
You can watch Sam every week on Thursday Night Football's
Prime Vision with Next Genstat's alternate stream, Tomorrow Night's coverage
of the Cowboys and Giants on Prime Video, not Tomorrow Night,
Thursday Night Prime Video and NFL Plus because it's seven
(41:29):
pm Eastern with T and F Tonight, Sam, Thank you,
Ma Man, We appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
Thanks Mike.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
It is Sunday Morning Football. On October sixth, the London
Games are right around the Corners live from London, nine
thirty am Eastern, exclusively on NFL Network. Aaron Rodgers and
the Jets take on Justin Jefferson and the Vikings at
Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in London. Rise Shine and watch Jets
Vikings on NFL Network and streaming on NFL Plus. Subscription
(41:58):
required for NFL Plus. It is time for last call.
Here at last call, I mean not really because after
this show, Ye Skyler Thompson considered day to day with
a rib injury for the Miami Dolphins. Could it be
Tyler Huntley time? Judy, what do you think?
Speaker 3 (42:16):
Panther's receiver Adam Thielen placed on IR with a hamstring injury,
so he is out at least four games. That does
not make the Red Rifles job any easier this week.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
No, it doesn't. By the way I did when I
made that sound, Just in case you were curious, off tomorrow.
I will see you Thursday from MetLife Stadium for Giants Cowboys.
But we're back tomorrow
