Speaker 1 (00:09):
The Ravens are off to a surprising one in three start,
and their latest injury won't make it any easier to
avoid one.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
In four or worse.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Can they get a win on Sunday against Houston without
Lamar Jackson? And how beat up is their defense? This
week we will tell you everything we know tonight. No
quarterback questions for the Seahawks and their defense has been
dominating two One big reason our guest tonight, Leonard Williams
will be here to discuss his old friend Sam Darnold

and what else is working in the Pacific Northwest. We've
got Sunday Morning Football again this week, and Judy Matista
has the latest from London on Dylan Gabriel's first start
for the Browns against a Vikings team will be starting
Carson Wentz behind an offensive line featuring well basically the

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Week five is underway.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
We will get to the highlights from last night over
our wes will be here to discuss how once again
the forty nine ers in survival mode thrive, But we
begin tonight in Baltimore, where the two time NFL MVP
is not.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Going to be out there on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Lamar Jackson officially ruled out did not practice the entire
week after suffering a hamstring injury last week in the
third quarter against the Chiefs. You knew it was bad
what John Harbaughs said that there was no way Lamar
could have returned, and ian, given both the injury and
the schedule, you have to wonder if we're going to
have multiple weeks here with Cooper Russi instead.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Yeah, I would say that is very fair to wonder,
you know, really weird injury, because as soon as Lamar
Jackson came out, everyone was kind of wondering what happened?
Speaker 5 (01:54):
What happened? We didn't see him going to the medical tent.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
He may have left the game in the third quarter,
but we still don't know as of right now where
and when he got injured. Certainly the way he played
could have got injured earlier, tried to play through it.
Still a lot of questions about Lamar Jackson last week.
Then you move forward this week. You mentioned the Harball comments. Yes,
this was clearly an injury serious enough to keep Lamar
Jackson off the field this week, didn't practice at all,
(02:19):
and then you mentioned the schedule. So they obviously have
the Houston Texans this week, Next week they have the
Los Angeles Rams, then they have a bye, So it
is possible that Lamar Jackson sits out, obviously gonna sit
out Sunday, sits out, next week, sits out another week,
gets three weeks worth of rest while only missing two games.
That makes sense, unless it's worse than that. They haven't
(02:40):
put him on injured reserve yet. If they don't bite tomorrow,
you'd terra Well, he's gonna probably come back within that
four week window, which means Cooper Rush going forward now
this week, potentially next week.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
He has had success with the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
He went four and one in twenty twenty two, was
five hundred last year when he played in place of
Dak Prescott.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
He can do it. He absolutely can go out and
do it.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
But as we've seen across the league, for a backup
quarterback to go out and get wins, it has to
be perfect across the board, and considering where this Ravens
defense is, that will for sure be a challenge.
Speaker 6 (03:16):
Well, the good news Ian is that they're healthy everywhere
else and they're not without any pro bowl. I'm sorry,
what you have a full screen? Okay, apparently there's some
information on this full screen.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
It leads me to believe that that's incorrect.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Ooh wow, look at.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
This right here. And here's the worst part.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
The questionable guys didn't practice on Friday, or at least
two of them in Kyle Hamilton and o'dafe Oway who's
dealing with an eye injury. Ronnie Stanley at least practiced,
So I guess that's a good sign. But Ma, Marlin Humphrey,
Roquan Smith, Zadobe Owoozy A Patrick Ricard.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I believe I mentioned this earlier in the week. I'll
mention it again.
Speaker 6 (03:51):
They have shirts that they've worn over the John Harball
years down in Baltimore that say.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Nobody cares work harder.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Yeah, nobody cares that you have a long injury report
because a lot of other teams have a long injury report.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
So yeah, they're gonna have to work harder.
Speaker 6 (04:07):
We saw the San Francisco forty Niners certainly do that
on Thursday night.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
This is going to be quite the challenge here.
Speaker 6 (04:12):
I know that there's a lot of confidence in Cooper Rush.
It's not going to be the same offense, obviously, it
never is regardless of who the backup is because there
is no other Lamar Jackson. But this is going to
be quite the task for John Harborough and the coaching
sty have to get this team right on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
We've got a pretty good competition for who is the
most beat up team in the NFL right now, because
the Ravens certainly have a case, the forty nine ers
that we saw last night, the Vikings, and how about
the Bucks add this one to their list. Running Back
Bucky Irving ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
He was in a walking.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Boot most of the week dealing with a foot injury.
Will be a lot of Rashad White on Sunday for
a Bucks team that still doesn't have Mike Evans out
there their offensive lines of mass. Baker Mayfield, though a
couple of injuries on the injury report, He's now off
that report good to go on Sunday. Panthers will not
have their starting running back Cuba Hubbard officially ruled out
with a calf injury. For Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
(05:08):
Dave Canalis said today they are hopeful this is just
a one week absence for Cuba Huddard. In the meantime,
ricodowdele next man up for Carolina. As for Raiders tight
end Brock Bowers, he officially is listed as questionable for
Sunday's game against the Colts, despite not practicing the past
two days. Pete Carroll said they believe Bowers will be
(05:29):
able to play on Sunday, But I understand it is
this was pre planned. They wanted to give him a
couple of days, try to get that knee to calm
him down.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
The injury.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
He just saw that happened back in Week one against
the Patriots. He's not quite been himself. They need that
guy to be one hundred percent. Try to get that
offense and Gino Smith back on track. That imagine the
forty nine ers are beat up. Hey, as somebody else
just said, nobody cares. They're taking on Matthew Stafford and
the Rams without their quarterback, without all their receivers, and
(05:57):
it really didn't matter, especially in the early going.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Nothing already second quarter.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
That's Mac Jones to Christian McCaffrey fourteen zero. Just like that,
i'd say on the road, except this kind of felt
like a home game. Mac Jones is pumped up. Don't
get in his face. He's the John McEnroe of the
youth tennis circuit. He still got a little bit of
attitude there. Rams, though, did make this a game. They
come all the way back. That's Matthew Stafford to Kyron
Williams makes it twenty twenty.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
They miss the ensuing extra point. All these issues for
Joshua Carty in recent weeks. That one gets tipped at
the line. The game remains tied.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Later on in the fourth quarter, one oh eight left
in regulation, Kyron Williams going up the middle. This felt
like this is it. The Rams take over. It's gonna
be a well what the ball is out? Forty nine
ers have it with one oh two to go. Take
another look. This is an unbelievable play. Alfred Collins punching
them first off in the face, Mass follows through, knocks
(06:54):
that ball loose. Roberts hll has got all kinds of
rookies playing on defense. A huge moone for Alfred, a
rough one for Kyron Williams, another change for Joshua Cardy
this time makes the most of it. This followed the
forty nine Ers running the ball three straight plays, given
it one last gasp. On to overtime we go Matthew
Stafford going back to Kyron Williams. Still has faith in him,
(07:15):
but he has stopped a yard short of the first down.
But the second time on this drive, Sean McVay decides
to go for it. It's fourth and one for the game.
You're gonna roll Matthew Stafford out, give him some out. No,
you're gonna give it to Kyron Williams.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
You get stuffed.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Look at the penetration by the forty nine Ers defense
pushing that thing back. San Francisco wins twenty six twenty
three in twenty three in overtime, Sean McVeigh did not
take it too well.
Speaker 7 (07:43):
It's that call by me. You called two timeouts.
Speaker 8 (07:45):
Were you considering different calls or kind of can you
walk us through that.
Speaker 9 (07:50):
Thought about maybe trying to draw him off side. It
took one, they took the other, and it was a
poor decision by me right there. But you know, you
give the Niners. They made enough plays to be able
to win the football game. We had plenty of chances
throughout this game. You know, we stayed in it, we fought,
we battled, but there's a lot of things that we
have to be able to clean up and a lot
of football left. But I'm pretty sick right now. I'm
(08:12):
sick of the spot that I put our group in
to end the game. But hey, these are the tough
beats that you got to be able to learn from
and move forward, and that's what we're gonna do.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Let's welcome in our Omar Ruiz to the conversation here.
This is a Rams team Omar that easily could be
five and zero. The weird way that things ended against
the Eagles. Then this game here you heard Sean McVay
take it a lot on himself. He did it again
today when he spoke with reporters and you could see
with Tyron Williams this one hurt.
Speaker 9 (08:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (08:40):
In the locker room after the game, Kyro Williams taking
accountability just like his head coach did, Sean McVay saying,
when you execute, you win the game. When you don't execute,
you lose, and Kyri Williams saying he's always gonna want
the ball. And I thought it was interesting to note
that Sean McVay did give Kyrin Williams the ball back
after fumbling at the goal line. You mentioned the pass
(09:02):
that was just short of the line to gain there
in overtime and then getting.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
The ball at fourth and one.
Speaker 10 (09:07):
Obviously didn't work out last night, but perhaps down the road,
infusing that confidence back in Kyro Williams may pay dividends
the rest of the twenty twenty five season and give
the forty nine ers defense credit. Alfred Collins obviously the
huge knockout on the fumble. Collectively Fred Warner there shutting
this play down. And then there's Mac Jones thirty three
(09:29):
of forty nine, two touchdowns, no interceptions, a guy who
after the game sneaky, funny, laughs at his own jokes,
and was talking about Kyle Shanahan saying they were bigger
underdogs and when they started, he didn't understand what that meant,
but he said, let's go kill him. And he's one
of those guys that said he looked like he was
(09:49):
rocky out there. He was dramatic, he was on the floor,
he kept getting up, Trent Williams saying he is tough
as nails. You can see why he was drafted where
he was drafted, an Apex editor and a cool guy
to be around. You saw the reception for mac Jones
from the bench when he would come to the sideline.
Very well received there, and obviously played excellently last night
(10:11):
in that win. So a lot of kudos to go
around for that forty nine ers team and now they
are a four to one first place in the NFC West.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
To show for it.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Mac Jones, of course, was drafted fifteenth overall by the Patriots,
could have been the number three overall picked the San Francisco,
which a lot of people thought was going to be
the case when they traded up. Instead, they took Trey
Lance and took a few years for Mack to inevitably end.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Up with Kyle Shanahan.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
The question now, Ian is could we see more mac
Jones moving forward at a time that brock Birdy clearly
had Purty clearly had a setback with that toe injury
that previously had kept him out for a couple of games.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yeah, very possible we see another start for mac Jones,
or even more than that. My understanding of brock Perty's setback,
and remember he was dealing with turf toe. It was
two to about five weeks recovery time he played in
that third week, so pretty early on in his recovery,
early on in his rehab, and then went out, got
tackled and basically short of the same way, reaggravated the injury,
(11:07):
then got put back where he was. So if that
is the case, then you're probably looking at a couple
starts for mac Jones. They're considering rock Purty week to
week now, and you have to think the player goes
out aggravates an injury, they already played him once. You
think they take maybe a little bit of extra time
to make sure that brock Purdy is healthy. And they
(11:28):
do have that luxury because mac Jones is balling the
only thing in Tom you mentioned this first on game
day morning. They may have to pay a little extra
because mac Jones when he gets to that fourth win,
if he gets that fourth win, unlocks a four hundred
thousand dollars incentive, but only if he gets four wins.
He's got three, so mac Jones could cash in as well.
(11:49):
Obviously not his main goal, but you know you.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
Could buy something nice with four hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
Check right, sure, I can find a few things, A
couple of boxes of cigars whiskey, which you just talked
about offline.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Ian.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
How about Mac Jones and the connection with Kendrick Bourne,
which Al michaels I don't know. And by the way,
Al's catching too much flack for last night for not
seeing every announcer has those moments, stop stop it.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Cut it out.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
But I love when he said it's born again, because
Kendrick is born again back with.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
The San Francisco forty nine ers, a.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Guy that was available via trade, I mean a few
times along the way, but most recently at the end
of camp with the Patriots and teams wanted them to
take some money off the top of what he was
gonna make, which was not a ton of money like
you know certainly you get in production like this if
you were expecting that, And he said no, I'd rather
be free and go sign with the San Francisco forty
(12:45):
nine ers who had a need and continue to have
a need because Ricky Piersoll, who knows what's gonna happen
with his knee moving forward, Brandon Ayuk, they've said he's
still always away coming back from that ACL So Kendrick
born again I thought was a fantastic storyline, and maybe
some they were like, Ah, should have just made the trade.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Throwing to three receivers last night who weren't even on
the team at the start of training camp and one
guy who was suspended at the start of the year.
A win unlike any other and ow a little bit
of extra time to heal up Omar. Thank you more
from you a little bit later.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
On in the show.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Speaking of backup quarterbacks, We're is it Carson Wentz again
Sunday morning in London against the Browns. JJ McCarthy officially
ruled out because of his high ankle sprain.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Vikings have a bye next week.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
They're hoping to integrate McCarthy after that potentially get him
back week seven against the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
Also, three started.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Offensive linemen out for Minnesota. Their backup center is out
as well, so Wentz has his work cut out for him.
No Andrew van Ginkel for the Vikings either one of
their best defensive players out once again because of his
neck injury, another guy who potentially could be back after
the bye. As for the Browns, Miles Garrett was out
of practice early in the week dealing with an ankle injury,
(13:58):
but as Miles Garrett often by the end of the
week off the injury report, he.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Said, they'd have to kill him to keep him out.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
That won't be necessary. Miles, You're off the injury report.
Good to go on Sunday. On the other side of
the ball for the Browns, Dylan Gabriel does get his
first NFL start this week in place of Joe Flacco,
who has been benched after a rocky showing for the
entire offense over the first four games. Gabriel now said
to become the first quarterback in NFL history to make
(14:25):
his first career start in an international game. Our Judye
Batista was with the Browns in London.
Speaker 11 (14:30):
New Brown's starting quarterback Dylan Gabriel says he has a
lot of confidence in the offensive scheme the Browns are
going to run. He should, He said, that is part
of the reason why they have him here, because he
has run it before. The expectation is on Sunday, we're
going to see Gabriel getting out of the pocket more
on the move, creating plays on the move. That's what
(14:51):
he did in college. That's what the Browns want him
to be able to do here. When you talk to
Dylan Gabriel's teammates. They talk about his confidence, his command
of the offen already, and his energy. They are hoping
he can bring a spark to an offense that has
struggled so far this season. They're averaging only fourteen points
this season. Miles Garrett said, he runs the offense like
(15:13):
he's been doing it for years. Chest out smile on
his face, Garrett said, We'll be counting on him, but
he can count on us too. The Minnesota Vikings are
very banged up for this game, among others. They ruled
Andrew Van Genkoll out today.
Speaker 12 (15:29):
Why don't they?
Speaker 13 (15:40):
I never know what to do in those situations where
the bat comes back around, like because you want to
like your health, you're going.
Speaker 12 (15:58):
Up, keep rolling, You're going.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
You sick. Oh, That's what I'm talking about, bro.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
There was a victory Monday after that, when there was
a victory Friday last week, one that I am sure
Leonard Williams and everybody else at the Seahawks facility or
not there certainly enjoyed. We're please be joined right now
by that man himself, Leonard Williams. No sunglasses here, but
also no sleeps, which I think is a nice touch
(16:30):
for any interview. Leonard, thanks a ton for being your man.
You guys are rolling still. Start up by talking about
your quarterback. Sam Darnold comes in. You've seen him in
his career. He's been in several different places.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
You don't know entirely.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
I'm sure what to expect from the guy from what
you've seen and knowing where he was early in his career.
What are you seeing this guy right now?
Speaker 14 (16:50):
I mean, just ultimate leadership and confidence. That's what I'm
seeing from him. I'm seeing a guy who's a veteran.
He's in year eight right now. I believe I've been
around him since us I've been around him on the Jets,
and for me, it's just great to see him flourish
into this quarterback that he is right now, just leading
the offense the way he does.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
So I want to go back a little bit because
obviously last year you guys had what I think a
lot of people would consider to be a successful season.
Speaker 5 (17:16):
You had ten wins, not make the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
This year, you're off to a three and one start
and certainly have the look of a team that should
be in the playoffs. How much do you think about
that sort of near miss last year and how much
does that drive you guys for this year.
Speaker 7 (17:32):
I mean, we definitely talk about it.
Speaker 14 (17:33):
You know, we had some close games last year that
we all wish we would have taken back, that we
wish we could take back, and we're pretty much trying
to eliminate those type of games this year. And it
all starts with a play style. It all starts with
a culture and a mindset. And I think, you know,
above our record, I think that's showing up the most
right now as our play style and the way we
(17:54):
play for each other. It's been bringing us some wins,
but ultimately I think that's what's going to take us
to that next level.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
I think part of it.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
We always have John Schneider on the show and he'll say, well,
you guys never talk about us. You don't know about
what's happening here in Seattle. There's no attention on the Seahawks.
But I think it's fair to say, like there's not
household names on your defense. You don't turn on the
TV and see commercials featured Seahawks defenders. What do people
nationally need to learn about this Seahawks team?
Speaker 14 (18:21):
I mean, to me, that's surprising to hear, but I
believe it at the same time. But you know, I
can't think of a position group on our defense that's lacking.
You know, we have guys in all positions. We have
great safeties, we have a great defensive line. We have
outside linebackers, linebackers, corners. You know, it's hard to imagine
(18:41):
a position group like I said, that's on our defense
that's lacking. And you know, I count on our defense.
I'll trust in our defense to make plays weekend and
week out. And you know, there's not another group of
guys that I'd rather go out there and play with.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
Ye I want to talk about your your defensive line
a little bit because you talk about the player on
that line. In the last two off seasons, Seattle's made
significant investments in that defensive line. Byron Murphy last year,
first round draft pick, defensive lineman. This year, DeMarcus Lawrence
in free agency, bring in play him on the defensive line.
(19:15):
Is well, what does it tell you about the value
that this organization puts on you guys, just your importance
to making this thing go In general, I mean.
Speaker 14 (19:23):
We talk about it as a position group. We always
say that you know, we want to be the position
group that wins games. We want to be the position
group that spearheads this team. You know, we want to
be the best team on the field, the best position
group on the field at all times. And you know,
we have so many guys up front. It's it's it's
useful to have so many guys. We we push each other,
we help each other be great, and you know, we're
(19:46):
able to rotate when guys are getting tired. We have
so many different guys with so many different attributes and
play styles that you know, the hardest thing and the
best thing at the same time is just learning how
to play off of each other, learning how to feed
each other. And we always talk about you know, Russian
as one.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
So this week he got the Bucks coming in. They've
got all kinds of stuff going on injury wise. Some
of the receivers are out. The offensive line has been
a bunch of moving parts here. But they've got Baker Mayfield.
They've got some dudes on that offense. Just what do
you see when you're breaking them down on tap? And
how do you get after?
Speaker 14 (20:19):
I mean to me, like you just said, the guy
you brought up was Baker Mayfield. He's the guy who,
you know, this offense, this team runs through. He plays
with a certain type of passion and energy and competitive
spirit that you could just see feeds into the rest
of his team. And you know, he makes a lot
of plays by you know, staying alive. Once he breaks
out of the pocket, he's pretty much turns into a
(20:39):
running back. He's not just sliding a run out of bounce.
He's trying to you know, run over guys and gain
extra yards. And this is, you know, another one of
those games where you know, up front we talk about
Russian as one, we really got to contain this guy. Uh,
the more we can, you know, contain him, stop him
from from being great as much as we can.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
You know, I like our So Bucky Irvin is going
to be out this week. He's got dealing with sort
of a footspread. You're gonna see plenty of ra Shad
White and some of the other running backs. Baker obviously
mentioned him. He's banged up as well. How much do
you track injury wisely, who's going to play, who's not,
How banged up Baker is, Like, how much of that
(21:20):
figures into your preparation for a.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
Game on Sunday.
Speaker 14 (21:24):
We definitely tracked it because you know, Irvin has been
playing great so far, and you know, as soon as
we found out I believe Wednesday that he wasn't going
to play, we immediately started paying attention to, you know,
the other running backs we've seen, you know, a few
guys in their old line has been a little bit
banged up, So we were thinking about certain ways to
attack the offense or things of that nature due to injuries.
(21:48):
Just like I'm pretty sure most teams do the.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Last thing for you, Leonard.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
There are times where I feel and realize how old
I am. I was in the green room the night
you were drafted back in twenty fifteen. I looked at
that is over ten years ago. You were in year eleven.
Right now, when you're playing at a high enough level
that our buddy Daniel Jeremiah said the other day, you
could be a Defensive Player of the Year candidate at
your age, at this stage in.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
His career, your career, how is the way that you take.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
Care of your body evolved, and how is your role
in the locker evolved?
Speaker 14 (22:20):
I mean, taking care of my body has evolved tremendously.
I mean, I'm sure you can ask guys like Dexter
Lawrence who was around me when I was a little
bit younger, and I used to take pride in being
a guy that was like, man, you know, I don't
do kotubs, I don't do massages and stuff like that,
but you know, I wish I did back then. But honestly,
it's a big part of my game now. I want
to play for a long time. I feel like I'm
(22:41):
at my peak right now and I want to just
continue continue that. And you know, also being older has
been helpful just because mentally I understand the game a
lot more so as long as my body's holding up,
my understanding and knowledge of football has increased, and that's
what's been able to keep me playing at a high
level right now.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
Physical fitness off the fields also, while you can show
up on this show and literally flex on us right there,
look at this guy.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
That's a big part.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Of the reason with the Seahawks defense doing what they're
doing so far. There it is. Love it, Leonard Williams.
Thanks a ton, man. We really appreciate the time. Good
luck this week of course, Thank you guys, Thank you man.
I'm more to come on this show, including the return
of Jayden Daniels, So how do the Chargers try to
slow him down in his return on Sunday in La.
(23:29):
Omarrowiez will be here to break down that matchup next
on The Insiders, the NFL and the American Cancer Society
Creating Crucial Catch because early cancer detection can save lives.
The five year survival rate for many cancers is over
(23:50):
ninety percent when detected early. It takes all of us
to intercept cancer, so don't wait. Visit NFL dot com
slash Crucial Catch to find your local care answer, screening resources.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
And to learn how to reduce your cancer risk.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Jade Daniels is back for the Commanders, set to start
Sunday's game back in his home area of Southern California
against the.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Chargers this last two games with a knee sprain.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Might wear embrace for a little bit of added protection,
but full participant in practice all week. He is good
to go. New's not as good on wide receiver Terry McLaurin,
he did not travel to La, officially ruled out for
Sunday's game. No Brown was also ruled out, so Daniels
moving forward without two of his top wide receivers. The
other one Deebo Samuel didn't practice a whole lot this
(24:39):
week either, dealing with a heel injury. No practice wednes
there Thursday, but was back in a full capacity today.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
He's off the injury report and good to go.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Welcome back to the Insiders presented by Progressive the Insurance.
Tom Telachero joined once again now by our Omar Ruiz.
All right, Jane Daniels is back Omar, albeit without a
couple of his top weapons in the lineup. Beer, how
do the Chargers attack this guy and get after James?
Speaker 10 (25:03):
Well, first of all, you mentioned it being a homecoming
for him grow up, but an hour outside of La
and the Inland Empire will have two sweets worth of
family and friends. So Jade and Daniels ought to get
that warm reception here in southern California, at least from
that group of people.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
But it might take a group.
Speaker 10 (25:18):
Of people on the Chargers defense to help slow Jade
and Daniels down. Jesse Minterer, the defensive coordinator, calling him electric,
one of those players that played so much football in college.
He came into the NFL ready to take the league
by storm, and obviously he did that. Winning the Offensive
Rookie of the Year last year. He's one of those
guys that can stand back and make every throw. But
(25:39):
he said it's with his legs on those big plays,
those big opportunities for him to steal your soul is
how Jesse Minter described it. So that's what they'll be
focusing on, putting pressure on him to avoid those disruptions
with Jade and Daniels legs. Derwin James saying it's not
just Jaden Daniels. Then he just talked about Deebo Samuel
(26:01):
as somebody who can get the ball at any spot
on the field and score from any spot on the field,
James saying they have to keep an eye on Deebo
Samuel wherever he is on the field, mentor calling Samuel
somebody like Derwin James that they have on defense, really
a positionless player, somebody who is an offensive weapon for
the commander.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
So they'll be very primed and ready.
Speaker 10 (26:22):
To go a challenge that they said they're excited to
face against Jayden Daniels and Deebo Samuel on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Derwin James missed a little bit of practice this week
with a glute injury, but he's off the injury report.
Good to go on Sunday Jolt, Not so much Omar
Giants scores beat the Chargers last week, but Joe Alt
his absence for part of that game after suffering high
ankle sprain was a pretty big deal. What's the prognosis
there and how do the Chargers go about adjusting to
protect Justin Herbert.
Speaker 10 (26:48):
Yeah, he's officially out now, and his absence was obvious
on Sunday against the Giants. Obviously without Rashaun Slater already,
so they're missing both of their tackles there. They're still
waiting on word about Kai Becton, who has missed some
time earlier with a concussion. Jim Harbaugh saying that he
has one more tests to go to determine whether or
not he'll play. And look at these statistics with Justin
(27:11):
Herbert's performance with or without Joe Alt on the field
this season.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
Look at that passer rating.
Speaker 10 (27:16):
It is almost double for Justin Herbert when he has
Joe Alt protecting him. Greg Roman, the offensive coordinator, saying
this week that they're going to have to figure it out.
They may take turns on the fly during the game. Sunday,
Jim Harbaugh saying they have the five figured out who
they want to play, wouldn't disclose who that would be,
(27:36):
but they are.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Going to be fluid with it.
Speaker 10 (27:38):
They're not going to have necessarily a game plan that
they'll be locked into, but they're going to have to
get contributions from all players. But it is something when
you look at Justin Herbert's performance on Sunday getting hit
twelve times, Romans saying they cannot have that going forward
this season, so obviously a point of emphasis. One more
note on this game that I thought was cool. We've
(28:00):
seen players all over the NFL that played for Jim
Harball at the University of Michigan. Obviously was with the
San Francisco forty nine Ers before that. But the Washington
Commanders tom come to town with Zach Ertz who played
for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, and Josh Johnson as their
third string quarterback who played for him at the University
of San Diego. Swalts a homecoming for a couple of
(28:21):
big stars like Jane Daniels and Bobby Wagner. It'll be
a reunion there with Harbaugh and those two players from
those early college days.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Good stuff there Omar, Thank you very much. How about this, Mike,
We were just watching Giants highlights. You haven't done that
in a.
Speaker 6 (28:36):
Bit, been a minute, Tom, although I was this morning,
as you know, watching the last drive of Super Bowl
forty two.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I go back and watch that every now and then.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Giants defense, which is a big part of why they
won that Super Bowl, Yeah, played really well. Two interceptions,
a season high for Justin Herbert and a season low
in completion percentage you see it there, and yardage as well.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
How about that.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
Giants defense showing up against the Chargers this past weekend.
This is time for good coverage, presented by Progressive Insurance.
That's why we're talking about coverage right here elsewhere in
the NFC East down ninety five Quinyon Mitchell the NFC
defensive player of the week. There five tackles and five
(29:22):
passes defensed in their past game. And by the way,
if you are a number one wide receiver looking to
get open in South Philadelphia on Sunday, I got bad news.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Quinyon Mitchell is playing and so is Patzertan.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
These are the two guys that match up the most
so far this season with wide receiver ones.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
So AJ Brown.
Speaker 6 (29:42):
I'd expect to see a bunch of Patrick's ter Tank,
Courtland Sutton, I'd expect to see a bunch.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Of Quinnon Mitchell.
Speaker 6 (29:48):
Brian Baldinger has got a breakdown of this Denver defense.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
Do we want it?
Speaker 7 (29:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (29:52):
We want it?
Speaker 8 (29:53):
Gobaldy Oh the Eagles of the Broncos Sunday promises to
be a great, great strategy game because Denver's defense returns
almost all the starters from a year ago. They led
the league in sacks a year ago, the lea league
in sacks through four games already, and their base defense
hasn't really changed.
Speaker 7 (30:11):
Very much or Nord of the Parsonnel in it.
Speaker 8 (30:14):
And so the Eagles have to get ready to play
against a defensive line and a defensive front that plays
a reduced front.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
And by that I mean.
Speaker 8 (30:22):
They cover the two inside guards and center with Zach Allen,
DJ Jones and Jonathan Franklin Myers on the outside. You
got Nick Benito on the right, Jonathan Cooper.
Speaker 9 (30:31):
On the left.
Speaker 7 (30:32):
That's the front. Now.
Speaker 8 (30:33):
They love to play that front early downs to stop
the run, all right. They got five guys that can
win one on ones up there. But it's not just
against the run. They get after you with a five
man defensive front, and they'll play man behind it like.
Speaker 7 (30:46):
They did against Chargers two weeks ago, and.
Speaker 8 (30:48):
They'll give up a pass for two yards right here
to lab mcconkye, but they'll tackle a catch.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
Excellent guys and man and man.
Speaker 8 (30:55):
But they'll also play a five min front, get after
the quarterback right here, and play a variety of coverages
behind it. Like right here they bracket up at the top.
Think about that might be DeVonta Smith and at the
bottom that might be aj Brown. A way to double
both wide receivers right here, still get out to the
quarterback and maybe force the quarterback to go someplace else
with the ball.
Speaker 7 (31:15):
So they kind of take that away.
Speaker 8 (31:17):
But make no mistake like these two edge rushers, their
takeoffs are as fast as any takeoff in the NFL.
You see Fernano at the bottom already beating the left
tackle from the Chargers. That puts immense pressure on the
quarterback either step up and then he's looking at this
two deep five.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
Hundred zone behind it and like there's no place to go.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
With the ball.
Speaker 7 (31:37):
And that's one of the reasons why they do get sacks.
Speaker 8 (31:39):
But really this defense with Benito on the left and
Cooper on the right, They're going to keep coming. Now
they'll go up against Lane Johnson and Malata, but the
quarterback has to step up. They're capable guys inside that
you get the quarterback to the ground. This is going
to be a lot of strategy in this game. I
think defenses are kind of advanced right now through the
(31:59):
first up to the season on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 7 (32:02):
This should be a great matchup Sunday between the Broncos
and the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Let's get a little fantasy info as we always do,
or at least usually do a lot of times, I
don't know, on a Friday, with our good friend Adam
Ranked Mike Garafole also joining us. Mike, you're not as important,
so we're going to focus on rank right now.
Speaker 5 (32:24):
There's a bunch of injuries this week. There always are
a bunch of injuries.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
Unfortunately, don't want to get your take Rank and maybe
Michael asked some things too on how these injuries affect
some of the other fantasy guys. So we'll start with
Tyreek Hill. That horrific injury we saw this past week.
How does that affect Jalen Wattle going forward.
Speaker 13 (32:45):
I believe that we'll see an increase in targets for
Jalen Wattle moving forward. I know a lot of people
rush to the waiver wire and grab players like Malik
Washington to go out there and insert into the lineup,
But when I watch the way that this Dolphins team
is constructed, I really do believe that going to find
ways to get the ball into the hands of Jalen Wattle.
He does have the ability to stretch the field if
they want to use him in that capacity. He can
(33:07):
also run some of those intermediate.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
Routes as well.
Speaker 13 (33:10):
So for me, I look for Jalen Wattle to take
a step forward now this week against Carolina.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
It's a little bit of a difficult I would say,
sort of a difficult matchup.
Speaker 13 (33:18):
When you look at the numbers, Carolina has not allowed
a lot of production to opposing wide receivers. I think
a lot of that is game script driven in the
fact that Carolina has found themselves behind in a lot
of games outside of that contest against Atlanta. But I
think in a pretty even match, Jalen Wattle could do
some significant damage against his Carolina Panthers team this week.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
All Right, Maliite Neighbors unfortunately out for the season with
that ACL injury for the Giants, which put a damper
on their first win there. The other day, I had
one del Robinson on my team. I picked up Darius Slayton.
I've got both of them. Who do you recommend I start?
Speaker 5 (33:54):
Well, I like both of them.
Speaker 13 (33:55):
But I think what we're going to see out of
Jackson Dart is that he's going to focus in on
one of these guys, and that guy I anticipate being
Wandale Robinson. Even with Malik Neighbors in there, Wandale Robinson
was leading the team in targets and receptions and everything else. Obviously,
Malik Neighbors was the exceptional talent, had the big games,
had the huge game against Dallas. But Wandale has been
pretty consistent over the last couple of weeks and who's
(34:18):
really established a nice little rapport with Jackson Dart. One
of the things that we love about Jackson Dart is
his ability to run the football. Last week he had
a designed rushing touchdown. He ran six designed rushing plays,
which should help open up the offense, especially for the
wide receivers. So Wandale Robinson is my pick. I know
that Darius Layton was a hot name on the waiver wire.
(34:39):
You made a good pick there, Mike. I don't blame
you for doing it, but in my estimation, it's gonna
be Wondale Robinson who steps up.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
All right, got another one for your rank. So we
know by now Bucky Irving out with that foot sprain.
What about Rashad White.
Speaker 5 (34:55):
I really like Rashad White.
Speaker 13 (34:57):
I know a lot of times in these situations, players
like Rashad White will just retain their normal role there
in the pass, get there as a pass catcher, which
is fine. I anticipate him doing that. I know a
lot of people are going to the waiver wire picking
up Sean Tucker thinking he's going to be the guy.
Speaker 5 (35:11):
However, we've seen Rashad White be Matt I think. I don't.
Speaker 13 (35:15):
I don't want to necessarily say bell Cow of this
rushing attack, but we've seen him with some ability last year.
Before Rashad White actually came in and took a bigger
role in this offense, or excuse, before Bucky Irving took
a bigger role in this offense, it was Rashad White
who was out there. So I feel like In the
short term, they're going to go back to Rashad White.
He will he will give up some carries to Tucker
(35:35):
and some of those other players. But I think the
Rashad White is going to be the guy that you're
going to want to start there for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Right.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
No, Lamar Jackson is an impact for everybody across the
board offensively for the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Justice Hill, Uh, the one that I know you want
to talk about here.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Yeah, the one thing that we liked about Justice Hill.
Speaker 13 (35:53):
Everybody looked at what happened last week and they just
figured like, oh, you know, Derek Henry got pulled out
or whatever. But Baltimore found themselves in a game script
where they had to throw the football. And when they
have to throw the football, Justice Hill is going to
be the running back who's on the field going up.
Speaker 5 (36:08):
This week against the Houston Texans.
Speaker 13 (36:09):
If they find themselves behind and having to throw the ball,
Justice Hill could be that guy.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
Once again.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
I've had to pick up Justice Hill in a ton
of leagues. Uh, and I've had I've.
Speaker 13 (36:20):
Had I'm having to play him, so I'm hoping for
the best, but I'm actually hoping that Baltimore falls behind
so they have to throw the ball to him.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
I don't think Baltimore hopes for that themselves, but anyway,
we will keep that in mind.
Speaker 5 (36:30):
Selfishly great stuff.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
As always, my fantasy team is terrible. But maybe your
information helped someone, just probably not me. Uh So that's London.
We got a lot of stuff going on on.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
On and including a football game Sunday morning.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
Perhaps you heard our good friend Judy Patisa has been
out there for a couple months preparing for Sunday. Let's
get some information from her. Coming up next on The Insiders.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
Sunday Morning Football, the Vikings and the Browns. The debut
of rookie quarterback Dylan Gabriel for Cleveland, part of a
really good rookie class that also includes linebacker Carson Swessinger,
who joined our Judy Batista in London.
Speaker 11 (37:15):
Well, Carson, all eyes are on the other rookie right now,
but you are off to a hot start in your
own career. How do you assess where you are right now?
Speaker 15 (37:23):
I think just you know how we're playing as a defense,
and for me, the biggest thing is going in each
week prepared and being able to you know, relay the
call and then and then play what we're we're trying
to do. And you know, I think each week I'm
getting more comfortable with that and that allows you know,
the whole defense and me to to play faster.
Speaker 11 (37:40):
Right, you are a rookie, so maybe you have some
special insight into what Dylan is going through this week.
What have you observed from him in the last few
days and maybe in the weeks leading.
Speaker 5 (37:49):
Up to this.
Speaker 15 (37:50):
I think just since the time we both showed up.
You know, we we we hang out a lot and
you know, learn from each other to just just football wise.
But I've just been able to see the work ethic
he has and you know that he's you know, prepared
himself for this moment when it would come, and so
I'm excited to see, you know, what he does.
Speaker 11 (38:09):
What are you expecting him to do this week?
Speaker 7 (38:12):
You know, I think for.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Him just to go out and play his football.
Speaker 15 (38:15):
I think he's he's been able to go out there
and play winning football his whole career. You see everywhere
he went in college, and you know, I don't think
that's really going to change for him.
Speaker 7 (38:23):
That's that's how he carries himself.
Speaker 11 (38:25):
Grant help, But in talking to reporters yesterday, acknowledged it
could be frustrating when the defense is playing like the
number one defense in the league and the offense is
struggling and maybe turning the ball over. How do you
process that as a defensive players sort of maybe having
to pick up your offense right now?
Speaker 15 (38:40):
I think for us it's just you know, look into
how many more plays can we make. There's obviously plays
we leave on the table that you know it could
be big momentum swings and help the offense.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
So so what are ways that.
Speaker 15 (38:52):
We can do that, whether it's getting turnovers and getting
it in the red zone and things like that. And
you know, for us, and then you know when when
mistake happened, which are gonna it's football, it's going to happen.
Is being able to go out there and put out
the fire and you know, not let the offense that
comes on and feels core.
Speaker 11 (39:07):
How do you feel this defense is playing as a
unit right now?
Speaker 2 (39:10):
I think we're playing good.
Speaker 15 (39:11):
Like I said, I think there's always stuff to correct,
But for us, we really want to go out there.
We want to play fast, we want to play physical,
and I think we're doing a good job of that.
I think, you know, when we go out there, we're
able to execute how we want to and we stay
pretty disciplined.
Speaker 11 (39:27):
The Vikings offensive line, I'm sure you know, is very
banged up, going pretty deep into the depth chart for them. Uh,
what kind of things do you think you can take
advantage of with that situation?
Speaker 15 (39:38):
I think in any case, when you have people you
know banged up, we're looking to obviously exploit that. And
I think, you know, we could really go at any
o line with our with our rotation or front four
that we have going. So I think it's it's the
same thing we take every week, and we're looking to
dominate the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 11 (39:55):
Carson, thank you, Good luck.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
Carson Swessn You're one of the good young rookies in
this league. So is this guy, Cam Scataboo Tyrone Tracy
is doubtful again this week, which means you're gonna get
for Scataboo. Every highlight of every celebration is one you
need to see. You also might want to see some
of the impressions of him stick around. That's next on
The Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance.
Speaker 12 (40:28):
Yeah, what a big boom phone six in the trap.
Speaker 7 (40:36):
Oh shake his head.
Speaker 6 (40:46):
Oh, whoa.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
I don't like this one.
Speaker 4 (41:01):
It's it's really mean, and I don't like the people
are mocking me in.
Speaker 12 (41:05):
It's not okay.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 1 (41:09):
You know, when Jamis Winston is doing an impression of you,
I feel like, Mike, that means that you've truly made
it in more ways than one.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Yeah, he's a rookie. He's not carrying any pads off
the field.
Speaker 6 (41:21):
Everybody's uh, you know, got every one of his uh
little uh sayings or his guy's old demeanor down.
Speaker 7 (41:28):
That's good.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
It's good for rook I mean, I feel like it's
kind of amazing. That was the best video of things.
Think these things we've ever seen, and the fact that
he's not like a mascot but actually a good player
makes this much better.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
Love it.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
We'll do our e impressions on the show next week.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
Say It.
