Speaker 1 (00:01):
If it seems like every NFL team playing last night
had a young star receiver from Ohio State, that's only
a slight exaggeration. Buck Guys coach Ryan Dave joins us
tonight to talk about JSN Mecca ATBUCA and who is
next in Columbus.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
We'll also speak with Quinton Lake, a key.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Piece of a Rams defense that has looked almost unstoppable
these past couple of weeks. How is Matthew Stafford still
slinging it at age thirty seven? Well us Quinton about
that and much more.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
In LA.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
The waiver wire is open in your fantasy league unless
it's one of those weird leagues that hasn't changed settings
in fifteen years and still lets whoever's awake at three
or one am get whoever they want. Michael f Florio
would be that guy, but he's also our guy and
you're gonna want to hear his tips tonight. Welcome Inside
with the Insiders, presented by Progressive Insurance. I am Tom Pelisero,
(00:56):
that is, Judy Matista, Ian Rappaport and Mike or A
Folo at the NFL Fall Meeting in New York, where
the biggest news of to day Mike was a certain
owner of a certain win list football team.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Say it a whole lot, Tom.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
These meetings are great because as reporters, you get to
dig in on some of the league wide business, but
you also get the chance to talk to some owners
about what's happening with their teams right now, which is
why everyone was waiting for Woody Johnson, particularly because it's
happening here in the New York market. Questions about Aaron Glenn,
questions about the quarterback. Our hopes and dreams were dashed
for a moment when he walked up and said, I
(01:31):
don't have much to say, and then it turned out
he had plenty to say, particularly about quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Justin fields. Well, the record speaks for itself.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
Yeah, but I don't go to any game thinking I'm
gonna lose, so I'm hopeful every Sunday. I just think
defense special teams are doing better, and defense was pretty good.
If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.
You got to complete some paths. You got to convince
(02:01):
him that you could do something. Otherwise it's hard to have,
you know, have a game that you can win.
Speaker 6 (02:09):
You know, it's hard when you have a quarterback with
you know, okay, with a rating that you know we got,
you know, I mean he has the ability, but something
just is not jiving.
Speaker 7 (02:21):
But if you look at any any head.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Coach of a quarterback like that, you've got to see
similar results. I do believe in error.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
He's a I've known Eron for you know, since nineteen
ninety six. I was a fan. I've always been a
fan of him. I see the way he handles a room.
If I were a player, he would I would respond
to him because he's the real deal. Nobs, there's no
second Agendre's what you're going is the truth.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
And a lot of times players don't.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Get the truth.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
They get a lot of doubled good.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Everybody knows how badly you want to win.
Speaker 8 (02:54):
How have you been given Aaron confidence that you still
believed him?
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Are you?
Speaker 9 (02:57):
Are?
Speaker 1 (02:57):
You?
Speaker 10 (02:58):
Are?
Speaker 4 (02:58):
You tell him every day?
Speaker 5 (03:00):
Right?
Speaker 7 (03:00):
Literally?
Speaker 10 (03:00):
Hew?
Speaker 11 (03:01):
I do?
Speaker 4 (03:02):
And what do you say to him? I say, keep
the faith now, and do you really believe in it?
Speaker 7 (03:07):
I do.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
I'm not a liar.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
You know you might think I am, But yeah, I
can't say something I don't.
Speaker 12 (03:13):
Believe in terms of the offense and the quarterback play
here be knowing that.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
It's such a fun offense is just not clicking.
Speaker 5 (03:20):
And you can't run the ball if you can't pass
the ball, and that's that's a football one on one.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
What Johnson often wears Jets caps to these as well
as games. To these events and games as well, wearing
a crystal Palace hat the team that he owns. I
believe forty three percent of so reading did that what
you will? But judy your response, your reaction, I should
say to Woody Johnson's response to being asked about I
mean it started with Aaron Glenn and then it went
right the damn he took it to Justin Fields.
Speaker 8 (03:49):
Yeah, I mean he torched Justin Fields. I don't think
there's any other way to say it. And I was
talking to him on his way out of the building
and he not backing off. When I said, you made
some headlines. He's like, well, I mean you know him right,
so listen. He lays the blame for the team struggle
at the feet of the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
He clearly still has a lot of faith in Aaron Glenn.
I did not sense any wavering there.
Speaker 8 (04:14):
He believes Aaron Glenn is the guy who can turn
this around. And when we asked him, like, well, why
do you believe that given the state of things. He's like, well,
the defense has gotten better. Look at the defense in
the last few weeks. That started out bad and has
now gotten much better. So he believed that Aaron Glenn
is capable of turning things around. Clearly, as Aaron Glenn
has to make a decision about who the starting quarterback
(04:36):
is going to be. It's almost impossible when the owner says,
if we could just complete a pass, that would be good,
It's hard to imagine you are going back to justin
fields at this point. But he did make a point
of saying that is a coach's decision. I am staying
out of it. He repeated that several times when I
talked to him later on. He's like, I am staying
out of football decisions. But clearly he is not happy
(04:58):
with justin fields. They gave him on off lot of
money and they feel like what he feels like not
getting anywhere close to his money's with.
Speaker 13 (05:05):
Yeah, it definitely goes into the category, Judy, of ask
someone a question and you want a real answer, That
was the real answer as you could possibly get. You're right,
I mean, hard to imagine them going back to justin fields,
at least for this game especially. You know, after Woody
Johnson just said words about a quarterback that you almost
almost never hear, so you assume that it is going
to be Tyrod Taylor, though I wouldn't be surprised if
(05:27):
Aaron Glenn tries to keep this a little more quiet
than maybe we than most coaches do.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I would say.
Speaker 13 (05:34):
The other thing is you see the Jets record, you know,
you see it. Look they look like they play hard,
they play tough. Talk to people around the league. This
is something that is clearly a process, and you always
wonder what is the owner think? Does he recognize that
this is something that's not going to be solved in
one year? He really seems to recognize. I mean, it's
an aging rosher. They went all in for Aaron Rodgers.
(05:54):
None of that went well. A lot of those guys
are still here, a lot of the draft picks from
the old Regimer are still here.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
As of now.
Speaker 13 (06:00):
Clearly Woody Johnson acknowledging this is going to take some time.
So we learned some things today, and if you're justin Fields,
I would imagine you learned some things as well.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Bottom line he's not playing well enough.
Speaker 13 (06:11):
But I'm really curious to hear what the hand pick
starting quarterback of the twenty twenty five season things, especially
when his owner came out and said the things he.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Did Justin Fields he got twenty million dollars per year,
which is on the lower end of the quarterback chase kill,
the very lower end as far as starting quarterbacks skill.
But obviously Woody Johnson expected more from Justin Fields has
not gotten it.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
So we'll see where it goes, both with.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Him, Tyrod Taylor, and the direction of the Jets this season.
As for the aforementioned league meetings themselves and the orders
of business that came out, Judy, we hit on a
number of things with regard to what's happening on the field.
Some thoughts often as well, What did you pick up
from what happened today?
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Here?
Speaker 8 (06:49):
Two things stood out to me because this has bubbled
up recently as a source of controversy playing surfaces.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
I feel like it comes up every year.
Speaker 8 (06:56):
It came up after the Pittsburgh game when that was
really chewed up once again. Officials said there is no
significant difference in injury rates between artificial turfs and grass fields.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
I thought this was really interesting.
Speaker 8 (07:09):
One of the league executives said, MetLife Stadium, which I
feel like most players and even fans think is like
a black hole of injuries. MetLife Stadium is one of
the safest stadiums to play, and it has a very
low injury rate relative to other stadiums. The other thing
that stood out is they are really happy with the
results from the dynamic kickoff. Kickoff returns are up to
(07:32):
seventy nine point five percent. It was around thirty percent
last year, so they're thrilled with that. One piece of
it that they're still working on is the on side kick,
which just.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Has not produced anything so far.
Speaker 8 (07:44):
They are probably going to have to revisit that, and
Troy Vincent, who oversees football operations for the NFL, even
said he told the ownership today, it may be time
for you to start thinking about some of those out
of the box solutions, like the fourth and fifteen proposal,
which is that in lieu of an on side kick,
you would take a fourth and fifteen and run an
offensive play. That was proposed by a Denver Bropos a
(08:05):
bunch of years ago. I think the Eagles put it
out there too. It was shot down at the time,
but Troy wants it revisited.
Speaker 13 (08:13):
Well, when you welcome the dynamic kickoff, you see the
results that is given. It really opened your mind up
to like they could do anything. Yeah, I mean a
fourth and fifteen seems crazy, but maybe not that crazy,
especially if you like close games that have dramatic finishes, right.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I think that's kind of interesting. A couple of things
that stood out to me.
Speaker 13 (08:29):
The kickers have been excellent this year in part because
they've let them mess with the k balls and it
has been a much more accurate kicking experience, especially for
the long range kickers. Troy Vincent mentioned potentially shrinking the uprights,
which I thought was interesting make life a little harder
for the kickers. And then the push play, the tush push,
certainly something that has been in the news plenty.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
We did see earlier this week.
Speaker 13 (08:53):
A false start actually called them the tushpush, not the Eagles,
but a fall start called Troy Vincent saying it's something
that are having trouble, commony grips with having trouble figuring
out how to end.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
It's hard to officiate.
Speaker 13 (09:05):
You would imagine that is going to be a major
topic Mike in the offseason. There's certainly no change now.
And as they mentioned, we have one team that does
it very very well.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
That's the Eagle Sorrey Vincent saying that the officials on
the sidelines well away from the play can't see down
the line, so they can't see that movement, which looks
so obvious when you're looking at the slow motion replay.
They can't see it. I did talk to them after.
I said, you know, is there a thought to maybe
moving those.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Officials closer above the center? You're suspending like search of Sola.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
What are you talking about that way? Yeah, like on
the skycam?
Speaker 7 (09:36):
Yeah, no, all.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Right, open to new ideas. Mike, you got some crazy I.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Just said, closer to the line.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
He said, no, we can't take them out of their
positions because just because they're in that formation, does it
mean that they're going to run that play And that's
something outside the box, like a play action or whatever.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Tom, please take it away.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I gotta have a conversation with Ian about what's feasible
and what's not in this world.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Idea Mission Impossible was not a documentary. Ian.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
We had a scary situation in the Buccaneers Lions game
last night. Mike Evans on this play, suffering a concussion
as well as a broken collar bone. Just returned from
a hamstring injury, now headed for another absence that effectively
ends his streak of consecutive one thousand yard seasons at
eleven coler bones usually six to eight week injuries, so Evans,
we'll have a chance to return sometime in December. Carson
(10:22):
Wentz going to get another start for the Vikings on
Thursday night against the Chargers. The team did put JJ
McCarthy through a workout this morning, and while Kevin O'Connell
said they're encouraged with McCarthy's progress from his high ankle spring,
he's not there yet, so another week of wench well
McCarthy would seem to be on track to potentially return
to action Week nine against the Lions. Brandon Graham is
(10:46):
now officially back. The Eagles announced they have signed a
long time edge rusher to a contract, bringing him out
of retirement and off Good Morning Football at the age
of thirty seven. The two time Super Bowl champ one
of just two players in the league now from the
twenty twenty ten NFL draft, along with forty nine ers
tackle Trent Williams. Back to that Bucks Lions game. Baker
(11:09):
Mayfield Jared Goff. A matchup of former number one picks
who have found homes with new teams, and they got
going quickly. Opening possession for the Lions, golf finding I'm
on Ross Saint Brown to the crossing Road as a
twenty seven yard touchdown. Lions take the early lead seven
to nothing. Second quarter. Now big hole on first and
ten for Jamiir Gibbs on the draw and he is gone.
(11:33):
Turning on the Jets flying past and twin Winfield Junior
gives out one hundred and sixty one yards from scrimmage.
At halftime, Lions up fourteen to nothing. Bucks get the
ball back, Baker Mayfield going deep for Mike Evans. This
is where a potential big play turned into a big
problem for Evans and the Bucks.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Tough to watch every single time.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Take another look Evans back at the missing three weeks
because of that hamstring.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Now not going to see him a couple of months.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Third quarteron Allies up fourteen nine games again to cut
the svan He's into the end zone. Fish with two
hundred and eighteen yards from scrimmage, most by a Lions
since Calvin Johnson back in twenty thirteen.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
The Lions win twenty four to nine.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Time Now for Fresh Taste, presented by Chipotle always good
for a fresh take, our guy, Brian Baldinger Baldi. The
Lions needed this bounce back after the way that they
played against the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
They head into a buy with a win. What'd you see?
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Well?
Speaker 11 (12:28):
I mean, first of all, you know, the Bucks scored
nine points, the lowest total all year, not even close.
Baker had the second lowest quarterback rating he's ever had
as a Buck since he started there three years ago.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
And so then you go, okay, so what was Detroit
doing defensively?
Speaker 11 (12:43):
And then you recognize that Eric Hallett and you know,
Thomas Harper were starting at safety for the first time
in the whole life, all right, So you got basically
first time safeties. You get Nick Whiteside, who came in
to replace Rock your Sin when he went out.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
That's in addition to.
Speaker 11 (12:59):
A Meek Robertson, you know, and Arthur Marlett who were
starting because of injuries to other starters, and Baker who
was playing as well as any quarterback in that's a
play by Nick whiteside by the way in the end
zone trying to get the ball to a beck Buca
right there. They continue to defend the plays in the
end zone and they weren't creating a lot of penalties.
They were just playing good fundamental football. And the thing
(13:22):
that really impressed me in watching all these young kids
play tom was they didn't have the communication breakdowns that
you often see where they're just turning guys loose because
you know, you didn't hear the signal, you didn't get
the signal. So really, Kelvin Shephard, the defensive coordinator, really
deserves a great shout out because if you have that
(13:42):
many new guys in the secondary, normally there are breakdowns. Normally,
there are mistakes, Normally there's some level of nerve. And
those guys all played like veterans against a very good offense.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Fantastic stuff. As always.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
We'll see tomorrow for a Ballies breakdown. Cannot wait for that.
Sea Hawks, Texan wrapping up a Monday night football doubleheader.
Sam Darnold trying to stay hot and guess what he did.
Big reason for that, Jackson Smith and jigbo one of
the breakout stars in the NFL that right there at
eleven yard.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Touchdown, dunksan over the goalpost.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
You're not supposed to do that, but when you leave
the NFL and receiving yards, you can get away. With
the third quarter, now Texas trailing fourteen to six.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
C J.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Stroud trying to go to Nico Collins.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
That's an interception for Ernest Jones gets up and returns
to twenty eight yard.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Stroud's fourth I in t this season.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Later in the third Quartersax Servine waltzing into the end zone.
Seahawks win twenty seven nineteen. Also a reunion, as most
NFL games are these days, for some combination of Ohio
State Buck guys.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
You see CJ. Stroud, Jackson Smith and Jigba.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Those guys connected a lot back in twenty twenty one,
and one guy who knows them as well as anybody.
Our next guest, head coach of the number one team
in the country, the defending national champs Ohio States, Ryan Day,
joined us here on the inside with me Tom Pilisaro. Ryan,
thanks for being here.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
What's it like?
Speaker 1 (15:03):
You got so many dudes across the NFL Right now
you turn on it's it's JSN. It's a mechia Buka
making plays. What's it like seeing those guys playing on
Sundays and Mondays.
Speaker 9 (15:12):
Well, we're all proud of them. I think people ask us, like,
you know, who our favorite team is? We just say,
depends on who's playing. You know, It's one of those things.
On Sunday, it's hard for us to watch a lot
of the games because you know, we're kind of you know,
recovering from the from the game before and working hard
getting everything organized on a Sunday.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
But we have the games up in the facility and it's.
Speaker 9 (15:35):
Great to see that our guys follow you know, their
teammates and guys that have come before, and we take
a lot of pride in our development and so you know,
we follow them really closely.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
JSN obviously had a monster year for you in twenty
twenty one. To see him now with DK Metcalf gone,
he's getting more opportunities flourishing the way that he is.
What about him the person and the players allowed him
to translate that into the NFL.
Speaker 9 (15:59):
We had a game att Washington this this past month
and it was great to see Jackson there. I mean,
he looks great, and you know, just to see him
around the team on the sideline. It gave us all
a bolt of energy because Jackson is a great competitor
and that has a great personality. You know, it doesn't
(16:19):
take long for you to get around him just to
see how electric he is. And he makes people around
him better. You know, his body language when he runs
routes makes it so much easier, you know, for the quarterback,
his ability to catch and get into run after catch.
He can do just about anything as a receiver. And
he's also you know, a tough player. You know, he
(16:40):
was one of our better perimeter blockers when he was here,
and so you know, you combine all those things and
it's great to see him have him such a great impact.
The only thing I'll say is, you know, as much
as he liked to dunk, we have to show a
little discipline and a little bit of poise and act
like we've been there before. As fool as that was,
my son was like, that was really cool, I'm like, yeah,
but we have to show us some disciplines.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
A lot of things we do that are cool after
a touchdown.
Speaker 9 (17:01):
So if I'm being critical, I would say we just
have to show a little bit more poise after a touchdown.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Oh, I have about ten thousand reasons to not do
that again. I imagine when a FedEx horive in his locker
later on this week. And Mecca a Boca, another one
I mentioned, has been unbelievable through the early portion of
this season, especially with everything going on in Tampa.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
He was really thrust into being.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
The number one guy right out of the gate, and
he's emerged as an early superstar. When you looked at
him back through the pre draft process, of the questions
that teams had, what did you tell him about a Mecca?
And is any party you surprised that he's come on
this strong, this fast?
Speaker 7 (17:36):
Zero? Yeah.
Speaker 9 (17:37):
A Mecca is a great example of somebody that could
have gone to the NFL after three years and had
a good career, but he decided to come back win
a national championship, and after four years of college play,
he was so much more prepared for the NFL and you're.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
Seeing an immediate impact.
Speaker 9 (17:57):
And you know, when we were talking NFL personnel about
him in the draft process, I just said this, and
you know, I say this about some of our guys,
not all of our guys, but but the ones that
I really believe in it's like you you decide where
you want to draft him, but he'll play it for
a long time in the NFL and he's going to
have a major impact on you on your team. And
you know, Tampa was smart enough to realize, you know
(18:19):
that that he was going to have an immediate impact.
And it isn't just again with with a mecca Is
on the field play. It doesn't take long for you
to get around him and realize the impact he makes
the people off the field, his leadership, his just you know, professionalism,
how he goes about his business, and he's a guy
that you know will be in that program and that
people can rally and build the future around for a
(18:42):
long time.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
You mentioned just you know the type of guy he is.
We had him as a guest on this show and
I was just so wild by a rookie. I think
this is after week one, hel maturi is and the
way that he comes across and the way that he
thinks about it, I thought it was It was really
impressive and obviously that's translated over to the field. Tell
me about the these Ohio State buck guys. You get
fourteen players go into the NFL Draft last year, yet
(19:05):
you're sitting there undefeated, number one team in the country.
What about the way that you've developed that program has
allowed you to reload and continue to be this good,
this fast.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
Well, we've been playing football at Ohio State at a
high level for a long period of time, so it's
it's not new to Ohio State. But I will say
that things have changed and times have changed, expectations have not.
But one thing about our program and the city of
Columbus and our brand is that when you come to
Ohio State, you know it's not for everybody, but your
(19:37):
expectation is to win every game, and your expectation is
to be a first round draft pick. And we take
a lot of pride in developing you know, the best
of the best. But when you come to Ohio State,
you know you have to move different, you got to
act different. You know, you're in a city of two
million people. You know, we have a fan base of
twelve million with a most watched team in college football,
So you know, you know what it's like to perform
(19:59):
under the bright lights. You know what it's like to
handle yourself different. So when these guys go on to
the NFL, you know they know how to act, they
know what the expectation is, and then on offense and defense,
they're playing in NFL style schemes, so they're able to
trends like quickly once they get to these programs.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Last thing for you, Ryan, I appreciate your time once
again here. I'm very curious with the expansion of the playoff.
It used to be if you took one win certainly,
or one loss certainly, two losses like that was it.
National title hopes are gone. You're you're going to be
playing in a bowl game and it's not gonna be
for the big thing.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Now with twelve teams getting in.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
We saw a three loss Clemson team get in last year,
how do you continue the urgency on a weekend, week
out basis? In other words, it used to be kind
of inherent. Hey, every game matters. How do you make
your team stay on course? Going up against the Penn
State team that's obviously had some changes like you are
this week.
Speaker 9 (20:50):
Yeah, it's going to be a great challenge. You know,
they're they're a very very good team, and you know
we have to do a great job preparing for them.
But that's what it goes down to. It comes down
to the preparation on our end. You know, if we're
getting up and down for different opponents, then we're setting
ourselves up for failure. So it's it's not flashy, it's
not sexy, it's just you know, going to work every
(21:11):
day with the same mindset of mastering the process and
doing a great job in your week to week preparation,
you know, putting you know, learning from the last game
and being able to upgrade yourself, upgrade the team because
what you did last.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
Week is not going to be good enough.
Speaker 9 (21:24):
You know, like in the NFL, there's a lot of
great teams out there, a lot of great coaches, a
lot of great players, and you know, if you're not
going to get better throughout the season, you know they're
going to get you.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
So we have to continually work to get better, identify.
Speaker 9 (21:35):
The issues, get those fixed, which is certainly something that's
really important during a bye week. But then making sure
that we're not getting bored with the same things over
and over again, the things that have stood the test
of time, and a big, a big part of it
is the type of people you bring in your program.
You know, then understand what that is, understand that we
expect a certain level of maturity and professionalism when they
walk into building, and that's what you know, Buckey Nation expects.
(21:58):
So all those things are what we talk to our
team above.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Ran best of luck the rest of the way.
Speaker 9 (22:03):
Man.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Keep those great receivers coming to the NFL. It makes
it a lot more fun. We're able to watch those
highlights here every single week. Appreciate the time man.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
All right, sounds good.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Things much more to come on this show, including a
visit from our friend Jeffrey Chadia. The Chiefs looking more
like the Chiefs, the Ravens getting healthier. These two teams
going to be there at the end again. We'll talk
with Jeffrey about that and a lot more. Next to
the Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance, don now for good
Coverage presented by Progressive Insurance. Despite be without Kirby, Joseph Terry,
(22:36):
On Arnold, DJ Reid, and Brian Branch, the Lions held
Baker Mayfield to a sixty six point one passer rating
last night. The Toroytch defense had four sacks, twenty quarterback pressures,
and defended twelve passes. That is the most passes defense
by the Lions in a game since two thousand and two, Judy.
Speaker 8 (22:55):
All right, it is time for the week eight Power rankings,
brand new onf dot com, and there is a ton
of movement. The Lions, coming off that big Monday night victory,
jump one spot. They take over the number one spot.
The Colts are at number two. I think they are
up six spots. And look who's gaining on them. Look
(23:15):
who's gaining on the entire league. The Kansas City Chiefs
back in the top ten at number three. What a surprise.
And you know what, We're going to go to Kansas City.
Somebody who lives in Kansas City, Jeffrey Chidea. We're going
to talk about his first read column. Jeffrey, you wrote
this week about six truths that are animating the league.
Right now, let's start with one. I couldn't agree more
(23:38):
parody in the NFL.
Speaker 14 (23:39):
Yeah, and you saw in that power ranking, Judy, so
many teams are competing for playoffs spots.
Speaker 7 (23:45):
My last count, I'm looking.
Speaker 14 (23:46):
At twenty teams that legitimately could be postseason contenders, and
by a handful more like the Giants or the Ravens,
have had tough stars to tough circumstances who are better
than we thought they would be, and so, you know,
the Chiefs have been dominant for a long time. Before that,
we've seen the Niners and the Rams and the Buccaneers
and all these teams get in there. But this is
the first year in about twenty five years I can
(24:07):
say that I don't know who is going to end
up winning the championship, who's going to make the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
So it's fun to watch all this stuff p out
each week.
Speaker 8 (24:13):
Right Just think how early we didn't have an undefeated team.
That tells you everything you need to know about parody
in the NFL. All right, let's talk about who you
think is going to be there in January.
Speaker 14 (24:22):
Any of the usual suspects. I think a lot of
the usual suspects. You know, Philadelphia's going through it right now.
They've had a couple of tough losses, but they've got
too much talent not to be there in the postseason.
The Bills have some defensive issues. I think that will
get figured out and they will be a good team.
Speaker 7 (24:36):
The Chargers, Jim Harbaugh, they've got their problems with health.
Speaker 14 (24:40):
They're going to be fight. The Chiefs have come around.
They were sitting there with a two and three start
before wondering what was going to happen now where she
Rice is back and then offense is electric again, So
it should be it shouldn't be any concern about some
of these teams we know have been good for a
long time.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
Right, Well, this is something that would make one owner
who seen in the lobby here today very happy to
hear Dallas Cowboys most entertaining team in the league, maybe
in all of sports.
Speaker 14 (25:06):
Yeah, with a bullet I can't imagine it's that they're
enjoyable to watch every week because obviously the offense is amazing,
thirty two points a game, They've hit the forty point
mark three times.
Speaker 7 (25:16):
They do all these big plays.
Speaker 14 (25:17):
The defense is lousy, so you know every game is
going to be a shootout with them. The other storylines
and Michael Parsons coming back to faces Commet are being traded.
We Godal Dell's upset with them because he got let
go of free agency and comes back and have a
huge game against them. They have villains, people looking to
get revenge, big offense. What more could you want from
watching a team every week? Dallas is getting it done.
(25:38):
When it comes to the Q ratings.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Jeffrey thank you.
Speaker 8 (25:40):
We will check in with you next week and we
will look at NFL dot com slash first read to
reach your entire column.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Thank you, Quinn Lake with us right now on the
Insiders with me Tom Pillicero. First off, Quinn, A lot
to talk about here, but did you work on the
British action? Did you know you were going to be
put on the spot to deliver in the moment.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
After a Rams win? You know, I had it practiced
throughout the week.
Speaker 15 (26:04):
I knew, you know, there was going to be a
moment in time where I needed to really hone in
on my.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Accent a little bit. And you know, luckily enough I had.
Speaker 15 (26:11):
I was miked up, and so you know, some key
moments came out where I could use my accent.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
But it was fun.
Speaker 15 (26:16):
It was fun being out there, fun playing around and
get into the victory out there too.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
This defense has been really good over the past couple
of weeks. Ten points, allowed several takeaways against the Ravens,
and last week you were all over the field in
that game against the Jaguars. You're forced to fumble. What's
clicking right now for this defense.
Speaker 15 (26:33):
And you in particular, Yeah, I think the biggest thing
for us is we found our identity. You know, we've
always you know, credited ourselves for playing fast, playing physical.
Obviously we're a young group, but I think at this
point in time, we're really getting comfortable. You know, the
coaches are doing a great job of us putting us
in position to make plays, and we've seen that really
(26:53):
through the course of seven games.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
And it's been amazing to be really a part of
this group.
Speaker 15 (26:58):
I said it in the micd up, I'm really blessed
to be a part of this organization and you know,
this defense and really the whole team in totality, it's
been fun. And for me personally, you know, you just
played football long enough you kind of get used to things,
and you know, luckily enough, I've had, you know, been
in the same system for four years now, which has
been huge. You know, a lot of people can say
they've been consistently in the same defensive scheme and system,
(27:20):
and yeah, you know, I'm just really comfortable where I'm at,
really really have a really totality at all eleven all
twenty two perspective of the defense, and it's allowed me
to go out there, play fast and make some place.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
You talk about the young guys on defense. On offense,
it was the old guys. Last week. Matthew Stafford goes
out there no puka akua. There was five touchdowns, including
three too Devonte Adams. These duds were literally playing in
the NFL when you were growing up. What's it like
to watch them put on that type of a show
on that stage.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Yeah, that's awesome. There's a saying that I have and
I just you know, I just made it up. It's
a give nine some time, he'll throw you a dime.
And that's exactly what we've seen.
Speaker 15 (27:58):
You know, really over the course of this last game
and really through his whole his whole career, and really.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Through this whole season too.
Speaker 15 (28:04):
He's playing at an unreal level, an MVP level, and
I truly believe he's going to be a first Battle
Hall of Fame and when this thing, you know, when
he decides to hang it up, and hopefully that's not
anytime soon. But you know, these guys have been playing
on an incredible level and to be able to go
against him each and every day in practice helps us
as a defense. You know, he you know that stuff
(28:25):
where you know the no looks and you know the
different arm angles that he can throw at. It's really true,
and he practices that each and every day, and you
see it when it comes to the game. He has
so much confident confidence and he's a dog, you know,
a guy I'm really really luckily and thankful to be
able to practice against but play with. And you know,
there's so much more football leftter Plan. I can't wait
(28:47):
to see what these guys are going to do for
the rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Every time we have you are one of your teammates,
and I'm always impressed. It seems like this very mature,
intelligent group of guys, and there's also some total physical
freaks in the I want to pose the scenario to
you here. Okay, you're on a team trip to the zoo.
You fall into a cage of hungry lions right before lunchtime.
Only three teammates can jump in and help you. Who
(29:12):
do you want in that cage?
Speaker 2 (29:13):
And why?
Speaker 15 (29:14):
Oh, that's the easy, That's that's really easy, Jared Verse one.
And I'm going to explain to every guy Jared Verse one,
Kevin Dotson two, and if all those fails, I'm going
to have my guy, cam Crow and so Jared Verse
He's gonna he's gonna make enough noise that will probably
spook them because he talks all the time and he
(29:34):
doesn't stop talking. Kevin Dotson because he's one of the
biggest old lineman I've ever seen in my life.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Shuemongous guy.
Speaker 15 (29:41):
So you know there's the reason why when when Kyrin
and Blake Korn and all those guys run behind him,
there's a lot of movement. And then cam Crow because
that's a human missile. So you know, I know he'll
he'll have my background. He's a guy you know, I've
been riding with for the last two years. So those
are three guys that just come to the top of
my mind, and I feel pretty confident. If we fell
(30:04):
into a cage with a bunch of lines, I'd be Okay,
that's so good.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
You didn't know that question was coming.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
But you managed to have speed, power and distraction, the
three things you would need to get out from the cage.
Very well done, there, Quinn. Last thing for you here
hard left, turn right now, But your dad. Carnell Lake
one of the one of my favorite players to watch
growing up. He was one of the best of his era,
all nineteen nineties decade team. He never got the hoist
to the Lombardi Trophy though. For you and your family,
(30:32):
and I know we're still early in the season, what
would it mean for the Lakes to bring home a
Super Bowl win?
Speaker 2 (30:39):
It would be huge.
Speaker 15 (30:40):
That's one thing I always said, you know, if there's
anything I could get over on my dad, it would
be to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, to go to the
Super Bowl and win it. Now he did go to
the Super Bowl, he did, but he lost it. You know,
he lost to Troy Aikman and the Cowboys, which is unfortunate.
But that's one thing I mean, he has. He's had
a fantastic career. You know that is that's going to
(31:01):
be a tough feat to beat in terms of the
things that he did for the thirteen seasons that he
had playing this game of football.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
You know, obviously I'll mimick my.
Speaker 15 (31:09):
Game off him, but if there's one thing that I
can really get up on him, it would be that
Super Bowl, you know, wearing that ring and hoisting that trophy.
But at the end of the day, you know, he's
one of the guys that helped me get to that point.
So yes, it would be one of but you know
he's one of my supporters that'd be right there with
me and enjoy in that accolade and that success.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Quinn, fantastic stuff. Man, Thanks a ton for coming on.
Enjoy this bye week, whatever you're going to do with it,
rest up a little bit, and we'll see you down
the line here.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Appreciate it, Yeah, of course, appreciate you.
Speaker 9 (31:38):
Man.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
It is time to go inside Fantasy Live NFL FANTASYSI
with NFL Fantasy. I'm with Michael at Floria, with Ian Rappaport,
with me Mike Garralfolo. It is waiver wire day in
fantasy football. If you forgot better, hurry and run to
the wire. Wait, hold on, before you do, we've got
information for you. We've got Michael f Florio's targets for
the waiver wire. Let's start with the running back position.
(32:02):
Some injuries there, some guys not performing. Wood You I
said it already.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
Where do you go? Nice?
Speaker 12 (32:08):
We're going with Woody, who's named after all of our
favorite cowboy Woody Marx from the Houston Texans, who played
over sixty percent of the snaps on Monday Night Football
had ten of the fifteen running back carries. He was
also the top running back used in the passing game
and heavily used in the red zone. I know it
wasn't the prettiest performance for those who watched, but it
(32:30):
is the sort of usage you want to see. And
the Niners this we gets this week. They have struggled
against the run since the Nick Bosa injury. So with
six teams on buy, I think Woody Marx is a
streaming option.
Speaker 7 (32:41):
And one that you could grab off the waiver wire
this week.
Speaker 13 (32:43):
All right, let's just say you have Asan Haskins from
Los Angeles Chargers, you got to play Thursday night.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
He's down for to play. Who would you put in
his place for you?
Speaker 12 (32:52):
Well, Kyle Manungai is a sleeper off the waiver wire.
I definitely want him on my team, and I do
think he is in play this week. Last week he
played just under half the snaps and he had sixteen
opportunities which he turned into nearly one hundred yards, a
touchdown and seventeen fantasy points. And the Bears are running
the ball at the third highest rate in the NFL
(33:12):
since thereby, so he could become a weekly flex play.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
And I think he's a sleeper this week because the Ravens.
Speaker 12 (33:17):
Have allowed the second most fantasy points per game two
running backs.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
All right, as it pertains the wide receivers. Where for
Arnt Thal Shall we look on the waiver wire?
Speaker 2 (33:26):
See what you did there? I we go Romeo Dobbs
there who has.
Speaker 12 (33:33):
Each over the last three games and seventeen fantasy points
per game in that span with at least ten So
the floor is safe and we have seen some upside.
And again six teams are on by this week, so
you look good for streamers. The Steelers are in the
top six and fantasy points per game allowed and yards
allowed to out wide wide receivers, and Dobbs runs over
eighty percent of his yards out wide, so he isn't
(33:55):
play as a streamer this week.
Speaker 13 (33:57):
I had Darren Waller. I had Darren Waller. He has
a PEX strain week to week, not going to play
this week? Who should I fill in for him on
my fantasy team?
Speaker 12 (34:05):
I know you were studying his tape thoroughly this weekend.
Aronde Gatson the second from the Chargers one hundred and
sixty four yards. That is the most by a rookie
tight end since Mark Bavaro.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
In nineteen eighty five.
Speaker 12 (34:19):
His twenty nine point four Fantasy points ty Tray McBride
for the most by tight end in any game this season.
And it wasn't just a flash in the pan. Seventeen
targets in his last two games, seven.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
Or more and three or five.
Speaker 12 (34:31):
So the usage and the production simply too good to ignore.
I think he is in play this Thursday when the
Chargers played the Vikings. And if you miss out on
these names, there's no shortage. This is a big week,
so be active on the waiver wire. A lot of
you need streamers, and there's a lot of good names.
And I wrote about a lot of streamers and started
sittingm this week for those who need help.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
You know, they wear for art. There I where for art?
That was actually grammatically incorrect. That doesn't mean where it means.
Why if you know Shakespearean eng which obviously I do,
why am I going back to that?
Speaker 8 (35:04):
I don't know?
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Idea, Michael, that Floria, we always know where art thou
Thy is here, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
I'm lost at this point.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
Thank you, Florio.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
We get kicks off with a good one. Thursday night.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
It is the Vikings visiting the La Super Chargers. They'll
be wearing those nineteen nineties era helmets and jerseys. We
find Natron means is he available to suit up? Asher
Bill Belichick could go without his running backs coach for
one week.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Welcome Back to.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
The Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance. Tom Pelicero joined as
usual on a Tuesday by Sam Schwartztein Prime Video and
Thursday Night Football's analytics expert to go deep into this matchup. Sam,
we will look at the Chargers those first few games
this season. You said this might be one of the
teams that's the class of the AFC. They've had some injuries,
it's been a little bumpy. What have you seen that's changed?
Speaker 10 (35:55):
Yeah, I think the biggest change was, Hey, Greg Roman
and Jim Harbor put the ball in justin Herbert's hands.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
They didn't do it as much last year. This year
they have a pass right.
Speaker 10 (36:05):
Over expected at six point seven percent, meaning based on
down in distance, how often they pass. And even with
Rashawn's later out Joel out playing their seventh tackle this season,
they have not changed their game plan. They still are
a passavy team. What's that led to their time to
pressure before Joel got hurt? Two point six to eight seconds,
since two point four to seven seconds now might not
(36:26):
seem like that much two tenths of a second, but
as football's called a game of inches, pass protection is
a game of milliseconds, and those extra two milliseconds matter
so much it leads to a big disaster plays for
Justin Herbert. But again, he's still superman or as coach
Arpel says, mighty man, and he can make the big
play happen even when pressured.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
He's going to be going up against the defense coordinated
by Brian Flores, who, as we know, is very game
plan specific.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
It's a little bit different every week.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
What stands out to you about the ways the Vikings
generate pressure.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
Yeah, there's such a unique defense.
Speaker 10 (36:59):
They run a six man front twenty three percent of
the time, meaning they're gonna put guys all in every
gap up front for that offensive line, and they get
a ton of pressure seventh highest pressure rate in the
NFL thirty percent. But them one of the unique things
for them, they convert those pressures into sacks twenty three
percent of the time. It's nice to get in the
backfield and disrupt, but it's better to get the quarterback
(37:22):
down and.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
That's what they do.
Speaker 10 (37:24):
Lucky for Herbert, he's one on one against flores and
last time they played in twenty twenty three, Florence blitzed
Herbert eighty two percent of the time. Herbert reacted and
he had his time to throw down to two point
twenty six seconds, by far the fast of his career.
So Herbert knows what's coming and it's his jump to react.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
Justin Herbert's been consistent out there for the charge of
this season. Vikings quarterback situation anything but it's gonna be
Carson Wentz once again on Thursday night. He does have
a couple of the better receivers in the NFL by
his side here.
Speaker 10 (37:55):
Sam, Yeah, I mean last week we had a backup
quarterback in Joe Flacco throwing a Tuneumber Ones and that's
the same thing that Carson Wentz has this week. The
Vikings have two true number wide receivers and Justin Jefferson
and Jordan Addison. They're one of two duos that have
eleven plus EPA generated since coming back from suspension. Jordan
(38:15):
Addison and why is this that a lot of attention
goes on to Justin Jefferson. He's pressed at one of
the highest rates in the NFL, and that leaves vertical
routes open for Jordan Addison, and that's he's been vertical
routes fifty one percent.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Of the time.
Speaker 10 (38:30):
He is the seventh highest debris on his routes at
twenty seven percent. So they have great wide receivers. Don't
make it too hard on yourself once to just find
Addison and Jefferson. Sam thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
We will see you next week and catch you on
Thursday night only on Prime video time. Now for the

Speaker 2 (39:07):
Help on the way for the Vikings.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Officially opening the twenty one day practice window for a
veteran running back, Aaron Jones today officially listed as limited
in practice coming back from the hamstring. Kevin O'Connell did
not close the door on Jones playing Thursday night against
the Chargers. Carson Wentz will once again be the starting quarterback.
Russell Wilson no longer the starting quarterback anywhere, now a
backup with the Giants. Sean Payton made a comment after
(39:32):
the game last week that he had told John Marra, Hey,
wish you hadn't gone to Jackson Dart so soon, which,
of course, in turns means we wish Russell Wilson still
would have been playing.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Russ had a little bit of.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
A comeback to that class list, but not surprised. Didn't
realize you're still bounty hunting fifteen plus years later.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Through the media. Mike, what do you make a spicy
Russ Russell Wilson?
Speaker 3 (39:55):
I apologize I was not familiar with your game. The
old Shaquille O'Neal meme right there. I didn't think he
had any good for you.
Speaker 7 (40:03):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
Wow, I mean going back to the bounty hunting.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Wow.
Speaker 13 (40:08):
I mean that's really the third rail of like for
the bounty and that's really it. My question is how
did he choose the emojis right? Because you could have
done the like eyes popping them. You could have done
so glad. You could have done the melting one, could
have done the eye roll. Yes, I'm melting.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Is like, I can't even deal with this guy anymore, well,
he often does.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
We're back tomorrow emoji let him know.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Yes, shouldn't be an Eastern just saying ext for me
and everybody.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
See then,
