Speaker 1 (00:06):
No, Aaron Rodgers did not get Robert Soli fired. Just
ask Aaron Rodgers. Hear what the four time NFL MVP
had to say about a wild week at One Jets Drive.
And now they can turn things around starting Monday night
against the Bills. Minshew Mania is over in Las Vegas
at you know, at least for this week. We'll tell
(00:27):
you why Antonio Pierce is giving the ball to Aidan
O'Connell instead. There's no quarterback controversy in Minnesota. No game
for the Vikings this week either, but we still track
down one of their defensive stars to find out what
PG rated nineties movie Cam Buying a might salute in
the end zone. Next, might I suggest Encino Man Welcome
(00:48):
inside with the Insiders alongside Ian Rappaport, Judy Battista and
Mike Garafolo. I am Tom Pelissero. We are here on
the eve of Week six already in the NFL kicks
off with a good one in Seattle Tomorrow night. It's
the Seahawks against the forty nine Ers. Week six will
(01:09):
wrap up on Monday night at MetLife Stadium with an
AFC East showdown, and the Jets are going to have
a new head coach. As we discussed yesterday, Robert Sola
is out after three years and five games as the
Jets head coach, leaving behind a twenty and thirty six record.
Jeff Ulbrich taking over on an interim basis and will
(01:30):
make his debut against the Bills. A lot of tweets,
a lot of reports, a lot of rumors, a lot
of badly sourced information flying around the internet. Aaron Rodgers
where else, went on the Pat McAfee show to try
to separate fact from fiction.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yesterday was a day that reminds you of the simple
fact that all of us who've played know all too well,
and that's it's a tough business. It's a beautiful profession,
it's incredible, it's done so much for our lives, but
it's also a really tough business. I love coach Sala.
We have a very solid relationship we have since you know.
(02:12):
I met him in twenty twenty one and had a
nice conversation when they came and visited us for joint practices.
He was a big reason why I came to the Jets.
You know, I felt like the team, you know, was
a solid team, had a relationship with coach Hackett obviously,
and I really liked coach Sala, everything that Matt Lafleura
(02:33):
said about him, the few interactions I've had, the times
that we went against him, I just had a lot
of respect for him. And so, you know, it was
just a reminder yesterday how tough the business is.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Judy.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
You've covered the New York Jets for a long time
and in that time you've seen a lot of coaching changes,
but not one here, not after a two and three start,
five games into a season that began with a lot
of expectations that so far it's early, but so far
fair to say that they've fallen a little bit short.
When you hear what Aaron Rodgers had to say, and
he had a lot more to say than that. What
(03:06):
are your takeaways?
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Well, first of all, I've covered stranger coaching changers at
the Jeff than this.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
But one thing that.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
We didn't hear on that clip was that he denied
Flatley denied that he had anything to do with Sala's firing,
and he said he resented the implication that he would
have had anything to do with it.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
He did say though, that there needed.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
To be changes, that like something had to change. He said,
you know, the definition of insanity is doing the same
thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
And he said he thought the key to a turnaround
at this point was player accountability, he said, which is
a theme he has struck in the past few weeks.
He also said he knows he did not play well,
that he needs to play better. And then I thought
(03:48):
the most interesting thing he said was that he was
on board with whatever Jeff Albrick wants to do with
the offense, which is definitely not a full throated endorsement
Nate Hackett as the play caller.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Now.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Albrick is going to start tomorrow. He will meet with
the media. He met with the media yesterday on a
video conference call. But he said on that conference call
that the staff will stay intact, but maybe the job
responsibilities will change. So we will see what he comes
up with. But certainly I thought that opened the door.
Rogers opened the door there to him saying like, whatever
(04:26):
he wants to do with the offense, I am on
board with, and we're going to throw our support behind
Jeff Albrick.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
So his theme was he is all in.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
He certainly still has a great relationship with Hackett, but
it seems clear that he is prepared. Everybody is prepared
for a shakeup for the offense.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
Yeah, a lot of signs pointing to Todd Downing potentially
having at least an increased role when it comes to
the offense this week. We'll see where it winds up
as we get closer to Monday night. In a game
that if the Jets win, they are tied for first.
We cannot say that enough because a lot of folks
who would have supported Robert Salo would say, but they
had the chance to play themselves in the first Well, yeah,
(05:08):
you know what. But now if Jeff Obrick doesn't and
Tom you talked about it the other night. A lot
of times you see that interim come in that first game.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
You get that boost from the interim coach.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
If you get that and you turn around you and go,
oh my goodness, we're in first place and we've got
the momentum of just beating the team that was in
first place in the AFCs.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
All of a sudden, that energy can start the role.
So coach Obrick, it's not up there anymore. Was up there?
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Coach Obrick is what Rogers called him.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
He was Brick when he was the defensive coordinator. Now
he's coach Obrick.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
But I would advise Brick slash coach Olbrick to Carats
keep that energy going because that ian is what Whaty
Johnson wants to see from him as the interim head coach.
Speaker 7 (05:47):
Yeah, and you do sometimes see if the interim comes in,
you get a little bit of a bounce and the
team kind of takes on a new identity. We saw
it last year with the Raiders, which we're going to
get to in a second. But obviously that's the hope,
some positivity, some energy for the New York Jets.
Speaker 8 (06:01):
You know, the storyline.
Speaker 7 (06:02):
Of whether or not Aaron Rodgers got Robert Sila fire,
which I also believe it definitely did not happen like
that at all.
Speaker 8 (06:10):
Mighty have stepped in and saved them.
Speaker 7 (06:11):
I don't even know, because it didn't sound like Woody
Johnson had that conversation with the But we will never know.
Speaker 8 (06:16):
I don't know if any of that matters.
Speaker 7 (06:18):
What matters is, as Aaron Rodgers talked about on the
Pat mcavie Show, if he played better, if the offense
was better, if it was not a stagnant Robert Saw
would still be the head coach of the New York
Jets right now. So all the discussion of the energy
and the new coach, it's all good, it's all interesting
where you're going to see it play out. But if
this offense does not improve it, and you know, Woody
(06:39):
Johnson vowed changes, maybe the changes that tied down and
he's going to get a little more involved, I would
expect that. But this offense doesn't start functioning like a regular,
excellent Aaron Rodgers offense, then I don't know that any.
Speaker 8 (06:51):
Of this is going to matter in December and January.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Frankly, as Mike said, a Jets win on Monday Night
would mean they're tied for first place in the division.
A nationally televised loss after making the most significant move
that you can make, beyond benching the quarterback, which obviously
going to happen, there will be a lot of feeling
of now what a lot of stake for the Jets
in that game on Monday Night. As for Robert Sala,
(07:14):
he did put out a statement earlier today thanking everybody
within the Jets organization for their love and support over
the past three plus years. Talked about the players his
fellow coaches and staff also wrote to the most passionate
fan base in the NFL, thank you for embracing my family.
It has been a pleasure calling New York our home.
We will forever appreciate all the memories that were created here.
(07:36):
Signed with love and regard all gas no break that
slogan will be back somewhere in the NFL sooner than later.
Elsewhere in the AFC East, the Patriots also trying to
create some type of sea change. By the way, there
are only one game back of the Jets. The AFC
East is kind of a mess at this point, and
they're going to the rookie, the number three overall pick,
(07:58):
Drake May as Ian first reported on Tuesday, Drove Mail
today confirmed will get his first NFL start on Sunday
at home against the Texans. How about that, Drake May?
Speaker 9 (08:13):
Yeah, Now, we're in week six, so you get I
had five games of sitting on the sideline hearing the
play calls, preparing for the game, prepared for a Thursday
night game, or was preparing for a Sunday night or
Sunday afternoon game. So I feel like we've bounced a
lot of different things throughout the week and how to
prepare and just trying to tag along from Jacoby. I'm
a veteran this league who's does a great job of
(08:34):
learning so much from him and seeing how he goes
about practice. So that's been probably the best thing of
watching Jacoby and washing how he handles, you know, the
whole nine yards, whether it's preparing, handling teammates, handling, handling y'all,
and just he's been great and a great mentor.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Judy.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
The book on Drake may coming out of North Carolina
was of all the quarterbacks, those top guys in this draft,
he probably needed to sit the most because he was
coming from that very room to menary TarHeels offense. He's
a super young guy. Just a lot to learn here
that lasted all the five games, and as Drod Mayo
alluded to today, just the athletic ability that he brings
(09:11):
to the table maybe opens up some things that perhaps
might let them play above the level of some of
the things that have been going on around Kobe were said.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
I actually thought Drake may handled that idea, the idea
of well you can make some off schedule plays, which
his own coach put out there. I thought he handled
that like a veteran because he said, well, I want
to play on schedule. I don't want to go hunting
for those off schedule plays.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
You know, just let I'll just take whatever.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
They give to me, take whatever the defense is giving
to them. So I thought that showed a maturity. Girod
Mayo was asked, like, how have you seen him progress
in these weeks that he's been practicing, and he said,
like getting the play, getting into the huddle, getting out
of the huddle, calling the play, executing the play. So yes,
(09:59):
very basic stuff, but very basic stuff that Drake May
had to get up to speed on. And also, grog
Mayo was asked, you know, is this team good enough
for Drake May to get in there?
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Right?
Speaker 4 (10:09):
You've got issues on the offensive line, You've got issues
with the wide receivers, and he said not every team
has a number one receiver. And he said, Drake May
will make us better now and going forward.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
So they're going to see posted on Twitter as Ian
first posted on Twitter. The future is now in New England,
a phrase that I feel like I've heard somewhere before.
Is the future also now in New Orleans? Well, for
at least this week, the Saints are going to get
a look at their fifth round pick Spencer Ratler, the
former Oklahoma and South Carolina quarterback who've been number three
(10:44):
on the depth chart, getting the opportunity this week rather
than Jake Hayner, who had been the backup quarterback through
the first five games this season. Mike, this is potentially
a multi game audition for Spencer Ratler as the quarterback
of the future. Derek Carr is going to be down
a while.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Why rat Well, you've got the short turnaround time that
you're alluding to next week because they got that Thursday game,
So two games in the next eight days, I think now,
because today's Wednesday, that's how works. But why Spencer Ratler?
You know, it's interesting, Dennis Allen today said he said,
for this particular we talked about it. For this particular
game against the Buccaneers, we felt that Spencer Ratler was
(11:21):
the right option.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I think they want Rattler.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
To go out there and play loose, and he did
in the preseason right. He just looked so in control,
so decisive in what he wanted to do out there. Now,
granted he wasn't going up against Todd Bowles first team defense.
When he was playing in the preseason, but that game
against the Titans. I remember watching that one closely, and
you know, he was playing with energy and he was
(11:45):
playing as if he had.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Been there for ten years now.
Speaker 6 (11:48):
So they want to kind of see if they can
get that same kind of vibe going get.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Him to play loose. We'll see.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
It's gonna be a regular season atmosphere against a really
tough defense.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Good luck, Spencer Ratler. The future is now in New Orleans.
I'm just going to keep cutting these promos just in
case we need those. A little bit later, another quarterback
changed today, the Raiders moving forward with a quarterback who
also was their past Aid and O'Connell who took over
last year right after Antonio Pierce got the interim job.
The bench. Jimmy Garoppolo put aoc out there. He performed
(12:18):
pretty well. He led them to some wins. They went
with Gardner Minshew out of the gate, but now after
a two to three start, it is back to O'Connell
ian different style. Aid O'Connell is your classic pocket passer.
Gardner Minshew, for better or worse, is doing a lot
of things running around outside the pocket. Why O'Connell and
why now for the Raiders.
Speaker 7 (12:40):
Yeah, changing things on offense, trying to find this spark
makes a lot of sense. And the reality is Antonio
Pierce is probably not the Raiders head coach right now.
Had Aid and O'Connell not come on late in the
season and played really well, I don't think there's really
not much debate there Now Gardner Minshew wins the job
out of training camp. I think the argument is they
were very very similar, So go with someone who is veteran,
(13:03):
who's been there, who could hope you hopefully lead you
to some early wins, maybe start fast, and then if
you need to go to the younger player later you
could do that.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
Didn't quite work out that way.
Speaker 7 (13:12):
The Raiders do have some wins, but they haven't exactly
started fast, and now it is back to O'Connell. The
upside is obviously a little more. You know what Gardner
Minshew is, you've seen Gardner Minshew. We don't know what
Aid and O'Connell can become. And gets the ball out
of his hands quick, he make smart decisions.
Speaker 8 (13:27):
We've seen him play really good football. Could he become
more than.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
Someone who competes annually for a starting job it is
very possible. The Raiders very very much hope, so we're
gonna get our first chance to see it this weekend.
Speaker 10 (13:40):
For Las Vegas.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Davante Adams strongly implied on that receiver show that he
a minimum co signed on the quarterback change last year
when they went to O'Connell. No DeVante Adams for the
Raiders this week, and Tonio Pearce did say they had
a good conversation recently. We'll see exactly where things go
from here on the DeVante Adams situation. So also when
we've got injury reports around the NFL, some notable names.
(14:03):
Russell Wilson full participant in practice because of a calf.
Mike Tomlin had said this was coming. That's the first
time since Russell Wilson reinjured that calf before Week one
he's been listed as a full participant. So continuing to
ramp up, even though justin fields at this point remains
GB one. Anthony Richardson listed as limited, still working his
way back from that oblique injury. Joe Flacco played well,
(14:25):
We'll see how his participation potentially ramps up through the
course of the week. Still no Malik Neighbors, He's been
in concussion protocol now for I believe thirteen days one
to keep an eye on here. Great sign for the Eagles.
AJ Brown Devonte Smith both missed their game before the
buye Well full participants today, which would suggest they are back.
And as for the NFL's leading receiver, Nico Collins, officially
(14:47):
placed on injury reserve because of that hamstring injury. That
means he is out a minimum of four games coming
up after this. One of the great young stars for
a team that beat those Texans back in Week three
handed Houston. It's only loss. Cam Bye them part of
that Vikings defense that we later role in some of
those changes for the Jets this week. Heye joins the
(15:10):
show from the beach. I think right after this on
The Insiders.
Speaker 11 (15:21):
Rogers puts again he'll fire over the middle and incepted, yes,
tip talk at the forty two yard line, but damn
fine them can for Cam. That's his second interception this year.
And this stadium, which is colored in purple, has plenty
of reason to cheer. The Vikings have the ball and
(15:42):
a ten zero.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Lead, the big stage in London, the five and zero
Vikings and a celebration for the Ages brought to you
by this guy Vikings safety cam buying them a repeat
guest right here on The Insiders with me, Tom pelicerro
Judy Batista, and you're a follow Kat. We appreciate you
being here because I'm not mistaken. You're on a bye
(16:04):
week vacation in Hawaii. What are you doing there?
Speaker 12 (16:08):
Yep, I'm on the beach right now. I'm just trying
to get away from football. I wish I was doing
this interview on the beach, but there's some kids running around,
so like, let me keep a professional on getting my
hotel room.
Speaker 10 (16:18):
But yeah, I'm happy to be here.
Speaker 6 (16:20):
Thank you guys for having me kids running around here.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Yeah, let me just start by asking, like, I don't
know if too many people and I'll include myself in
this thought the Vikings were going to start the season
five to zero and be the story of the NFL.
At what point did you think you might have had
something special here with this team.
Speaker 12 (16:47):
I'm obviously being a player. You always know that you
guys have the confidence and you see the work that
you guys put behind the scenes. But really we knew
it from the beginning when you just look around the
team and see the weapons that we have on offense
and defense.
Speaker 10 (17:02):
It's hard to really find a weak point on our team.
Speaker 12 (17:05):
So really, going through training camp, we would look at
each other and be like, Okay, this has a little
different feel this year, just how competitive practices were and
how really looking around and seeing the experience that we
have just through every single position. We knew that there
would be something special, but it was a matter of okay,
can we make it sustain? And here we are five weeks,
(17:25):
still haven't lost the game, and we know that we
have something special.
Speaker 10 (17:29):
But it's only five weeks so far.
Speaker 12 (17:31):
We still have to get the seventeen games than the postseason.
So our mindset is, let's just keep stacking and keep
it rolling, because five and zeros means nothing in the
big picture.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
Here's what I love about when Cam Biden's on the show.
His news tends to register in non sports outlets. You
had the situation with your wife last year, trying to
get her back to the States. Outlets all over the
place covering that one, and now this week, the US
weeklies of the world, the peoples of the world covering
your parent trap handshake celebration after your interception. Take us
(18:05):
through the play if you want to, we'd love to
talk football, but also take us through the celebration, the inspiration,
and how you saw a movie that really has been
several iterations before your time.
Speaker 12 (18:19):
So yeah, I guess we'll start with the football part.
I know that's what the people want to hear. So
really being able to pick off Aaron Rodgers, that's a
big deal, and especially me being a cow guy went
to my college and somebody I look up to, so
it's been on my bucket list to go against him
and pick them off. So I was glad to finally
be able to get him. And now the fun part,
(18:39):
the celebration, that's something we've been planning for a while.
Speaker 10 (18:42):
This season.
Speaker 12 (18:44):
Our goal is to really just have as much fun
as possible. We know the more plays we make, the
more fun we can have. So going through this week
leading up to it, I was getting a massage and
I was watching I was on Disney Plus. I'm like, okay,
Parent Traps one of my favorite movies. I started watching it,
I'm like, oh wait, London. Then I start doing a
hashtake and I'm like, I got one.
Speaker 10 (19:03):
So I knew.
Speaker 12 (19:04):
I knew would be a viral one. So I tell
my partner in crime, Josh Mattelius. I said, Hey, I
got a celebration for us this week. We're going viral
and this is people are going to love this one,
especially because it's it's a legendary movie and it's from
nineteen ninety eight, the year we were both born. So
it's a deep meaning for both of us. So I'm like,
(19:24):
we we knew that this is going to be viral,
and this is going to be one of the celebrations
that we have to do. So but it's not over.
We're going to make more plays and get more celebrations
out there.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
There's so many layers on which I love this camp.
One being you have the foresight to go, we're going
to London, why don't I put together a paratrap celebration,
But you still have to make the play to allow
you to do the celebration. You succeed in that.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
But it's also the.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Fact that you know at a time that every week
there's players now getting fined for like pointing in a
gun like motion and things like that. Like you were
going g you rated, you were going with kids movies,
and so I got to ask you, like, what I
know you probably got ten different things. What's one thing
you're cooking up for a future celebration.
Speaker 12 (20:11):
I don't know if I want to tell you, but
just because this is a big moment, I'm with you, guys,
I'll tell you the next one that it'll be. I'm
thinking of Phineas and Ferb one just for the newer generation,
still g rated. But I can't tell the exact exact
one from Phineas and Ferb. But that's the one we
have cooking up, and when you see it, you'll know.
(20:31):
And if you guys have kids are watching, they'll know
exactly what it is.
Speaker 10 (20:34):
But yeah, I need a.
Speaker 12 (20:35):
G rated because my parents will still yell at me
if I do something crazy like show a gun or whatever.
So I'm keeping it friendly out there.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
I would just recommend maybe Pepa Pig for a future
one too.
Speaker 10 (20:49):
That was my favorite. I don't know if animations are
that good enough.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
Obviously, you got to make plays on defense to have
the occasion to do all these celebrations, like you guys
have already taken apart, like CJ. Stroud, Rockberdy obviously Aaron
Rodgers last week, Like why is this defense so good
right now? At confusing top quarterbacks.
Speaker 12 (21:16):
I would just say the fact that we have so
many capable players that are capable of changing the game
every week. Coach Coach Flow always talks about I don't
know who's going to make the play, but somebody's going
to be making making multiple plays. And I don't know
who it is going to be this week or next
week or the week after, but somebody is going to
be the person to have the big game, the game
of their life. And I think across the whole board,
(21:38):
every single player on our defense is capable at having
a life changing game. So the fact that we have
those type of players, and on top of that, we
play team defense and everybody just plays sound technique and
we're not compared to last year.
Speaker 10 (21:52):
We're not even doing as much.
Speaker 12 (21:54):
Quote unquote crazy stuff as you guys are used to
seeing out of Coach Flow. But really we're just knowing
that we have to come out there and just play
team ball and we'll start making plays. So that's really
the biggest thing about it. We just have fun playing together.
Speaker 6 (22:10):
Kem, it's October's Filipino heritage. Muth you are you proud
of Filipino? Tell us what it means to you to
be able to play football in that month, Like it's
great that it's in October during football season, not like
in May we're doing OTAs or whatever exactly.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
But tell us what this month means to you.
Speaker 12 (22:26):
Yeah, just being able to represent something first and foremost
represent God and just with my platform and bring all
glory to Jesus. But being able to represent people that,
especially in sports, doesn't really see much much light.
Speaker 10 (22:40):
As Filipinos. We saw Manupac yall.
Speaker 12 (22:42):
And what he meant to us and the way that
I looked up to him, even as a football player.
So if I'm able to represent some people that really
don't see much see themselves in sports very much, and
I'm able to be that example, it's an honor and
it's a blessing.
Speaker 10 (22:57):
So I really take that serious, being able to.
Speaker 12 (22:59):
Show the flag and just represent my people whenever I can,
because I've realized how big of a deal it is
for people, whether it's a popular sport like basketball, boxing
in the world or for me being a Filipino playing
American football. It's new and it's different, but the way
that people support it and really feel that sense of
pride when they see me doing something positive and any
(23:20):
other Filipino doing something positive in sports.
Speaker 10 (23:23):
It's a big deal.
Speaker 12 (23:24):
So I'm just trying to be somebody the kids and
even the adults can look up to you.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
I've heard you say it before, Cam after celebrate a
big win movie, right, movie, that's all about it, man,
Your movie keeps getting better and better. So just keep
coming back, keep celebrating, keep getting picks.
Speaker 8 (23:41):
Man.
Speaker 12 (23:41):
You're welcome on the show anytime. Yes, Sarah, thank you
for having me. I appreciate it, look forward to being back.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
You got it camp all right, enjoy the beach iware.
Coming up on The Insiders, Drake May they're taking them
out of the bubble wrap this week. So what is
Bucky Brooks looking for and the number overall picks regular
season debut.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Bockey will be with.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
Us to break it down right after this on The Insiders.
Speaker 13 (24:13):
First of all, give it up for yourself for playing
a four to quarter game.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Here's here's the deal.
Speaker 13 (24:19):
Then, it's hard to win in this league when we
take care of business. Even though it was not our best,
it was not our best, especially that first half.
Speaker 10 (24:29):
We got it together, but we battled for four quarters.
So I'm proud of the effort.
Speaker 13 (24:33):
Of that but we gotta clean a lot of up men.
But like I said, it's a long trip coming out
here and battle until the end and coming away with
a dub. So I'm very proud of the effort, and
we got to celebrate this.
Speaker 10 (24:46):
You with me. I do have two game balls, all right.
Speaker 8 (24:49):
And the first guy, you gotta give it up for him.
Speaker 6 (24:52):
He had two tugs today, four catches eight.
Speaker 13 (25:03):
The second guy, man, I don't want to Jason, but
five picks and five.
Speaker 7 (25:10):
Oh well, we'll get to that second guy in a second.
And very pleased to bring in my good friend Omar Reeves,
who of course was in Sofi Stadium watching Packers rams
and that was an emotional game. I know you talked
to a ton of people and there's a lot to
get to. You are also here to talk to us,
of course about the Cardinals Packers game. Let's get to
(25:33):
the offense, right. You have been able to see Jordan
Love up up, up close. It has been a roller
coaster season. It is starting to get really good again.
What are your takeaways from this Packers offense and Love?
Speaker 14 (25:45):
Well, First of all, with the knee in, Jordan Love
told me after the game that his knee was feeling
dramatically better than it did after that Minnesota game. Att Lafour,
even saying that it looked like he was moving around
a lot better, didn't affect anything in their play calls
or how they would want him move around. What Matt
Lafleur told me about Jordan Love after the game was
that one of his superpowers is that he doesn't blink
(26:08):
when the pressure comes, and that was indicative on the
pick six that he threw backed.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Up against their end zone.
Speaker 14 (26:13):
The Rams score get all the momentum with about two
minutes to play in the first half, Love maintains his
poise and leaves a nine play forty two yard drive
to set up a critical field goal possession at the
first half buzzer to keep the Packers in the game,
and subsequently the next two possessions of the second half
they scored touchdowns. Now Laflour saying that they would like
(26:33):
to establish a little more consistency offensively. It seems like
they've been feast or famine. They have those huge explosive
plays and then or they're a three and out type
of scenario. So looking for that consistency with that offense.
And then about Jordan love. He embodies that consistency. He
leads the league in touchdowns per game right now, he
also leads the league in interceptions per game. And Matt
(26:56):
leaflour is saying, on that fifty three yard big play
to Jayden Ree, he was like, no, no, no, because
it was in a triple coverage and then once we'd
caught it, yes, and.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
It set up the Packers' first score.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
So it's been that kind of season.
Speaker 14 (27:08):
Exciting, but if they can find that consistency, they'll be
a lot more confident with that.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
Offense going forward.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
Now, speaking of someone who leads the NFL in something else,
Xavier McKinney leads the NFL in interceptions with five. He
has been an absolute revelation. If people didn't really know
how good he was, they are certainly finding out this year.
What are some of the reasons behind Xavier McKinney having
this star turn to the Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 14 (27:34):
Well, that's interesting you said star turn there ian because
he told me after the game that all the accolades
and maybe all the recognition that he hasn't received yet
in his career he was looking to get coming into
this season. When I asked him, did you envision this
hot of a start to start the year. He said yes,
quite frankly, he knew if he was going to accomplish
all the things that he wants to accomplish, he was
(27:56):
going to need to get off to a fast start.
He told me that it's the leading into the game
that helps him, and then his high football IQ, the
intelligence there to understand how a quarterback is trying to
attack their defense, what the offense is trying to do
to the defense. As the game unfolds, he's able to
recognize that and it all comes together for him and
(28:18):
he's been able to make plays on the ball. Obviously
those five straight games with the interceptions, and it's not
just the interceptions. In in that game, the very first
possession for the Rams, a big third and three Matthew Stafford,
he said, try to look him off, but he hits
two to at Will and then McKinney breaks a huge
hit on Atwell, breaks up the play. The Packers get
(28:39):
forced to punt and they get the ball. But it's
those type of plays. He also had the big fumble
recovery on the first possession for the Rams in the
second half that's set up the go ahead touchdown for them.
So he's making an impact all over the field and
certainly with those interceptions as well.
Speaker 7 (28:55):
Four years, sixty seven million seemed like a lot of
money in March. Kind of a bargain for the Green
Bay Packs. Actually, just a really great deal all around. Omar,
thank you so much, appreciate you hanging out with us.
Looking forward to talk to you very soon. Mike, take
it away.
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Thanks for the toss, I and I'll catch it just
like that Trey Turner throw it at home to get
the runner out at the plate.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
What Drake May will make his first career.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
Start for the New England Patriots, number three overall pick,
officially taking over for Jacoby Brissett up there in Foxborough.
As we bring in our Bucky Brooks, who talked up
plenty about Drake May and all these rookie quarterbacks ahead
of this year's draft. So Buck, give it everything you
knew about May, given what you saw in the preseason
and in a little bit of spot duty here. I
(29:41):
thought he was impressive in the preseason and against the Jets.
What are your thoughts on Drake May taking over for
the Pats here?
Speaker 15 (29:48):
Yeah, this is a big controversial because the Patriots had
talked about Richer and Drake may maybe not allowing him
to play this year, waiting till next year or later
in the season.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
But look, man, he's talented.
Speaker 15 (29:58):
He's more talented, Jacobe said, and so the Patriots want
to get the developmental process started now. The thing that
you have to know about Drake may, despite the talent,
despite the athleticism, besite, despite all the positive physical things
that he's going to bring to the table, he only
had twenty six starts in North Carolina, so it may
be a bit of a bumpy ride early. You hope
that he's able to maintain his confidence as the Patriots
(30:21):
build a game pen around his talent. That game plan
should include heavy run game RPOs, quicks, rhythm throws, and
some occasional shots because that's what he did really well
at North Carolina. But with a gunslinger's mentality who's prone
to play hero ball, he.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Could make some mistakes that lead the turnovers.
Speaker 15 (30:38):
The thing the Patriots have to do is hang in
there through the rough patches and then find a way
to build around him, because he'll be much better than
twenty twenty five for the experience that he gets in
twenty twenty four.
Speaker 6 (30:50):
Yep, looking forward to seeing Drake May out there. If
he's as smooth as he was through the pre draft
prospect I think he'll do just find except for the
fact that are despite the fact that this roster around
him is not the greatest. Meanwhile, I know we focus
so much on all the quarterbacks that went in the
first dozen, but some were taken after that, including Spencer Ratler,
(31:11):
the fifth round pick along with May. He will be
the fifth quarterback or rookie quarterback to get the ball
this year.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
So Rattler was an.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
Interesting prospect, Bucky, what are your thoughts on him now
taking over for the injured Derek Carr who might miss
multiple games here.
Speaker 15 (31:27):
Yeah, now this is one to watch and the excitement
over Drake May is different because he comes with a
lot of expectations. Spencer Ratler is the one that could surprise,
and the reason why he could surprise is you have
to remember, going all the way back through the recruiting process,
through the scouting process, at one point many regarded him
as a guy that was going to be a first round.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Pick when he was at Oklahoma. Didn't work out that way.
Speaker 15 (31:47):
He went on to South Carolina because he lost his
job to Kayler Williams, but what he developed is a
little grit, a little toughness, a little resilience. Senior Bowl
MVP had an opportunity to see him show out throughout
the preseason, where he displayed a very mature and evolved game.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Giving click Kobs.
Speaker 15 (32:04):
Experience with Kyle Shanahan and what the Niners did with
Rock Party. I'm not saying that Radley will be a
Brock Party like player, but I'm saying that experience could
allow him to play much better than many imagine, and
it could allow the Saints to keep on rolling while
Spencer Radler is in place of Derek Carr.
Speaker 6 (32:22):
His first assignment a Todd Bowles coach. Defense. So interested
to see how Spencer Ratler does against the Buccaneers. Bucky Brooks,
thank you very much for your insight regarding these rookie quarterbacks.
Coming up next, We've got some fantasy football decisions to make.
Michael f Florio coming in to join us. Great timing.
(32:43):
Right after that Lindor Grand Slam. Another Mets fan awesome.
Can't wait for this.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
Welcome back to the Insider. As we are on the
eve of Week six in the NFL kicks off tomorrow
night in Seattle with the Seahawks against the forty nine Ers, And,
as we so often do, we need advice on our
fantasy lineups. Nobody better than that than that guy right there,
Michael F Florio joining me, Tom Pelisero, Ian Rappaport, and
Mike Garofolo. All right, Florio, it is start and sit time.
(33:20):
Let's start out with a running back. You would start
in week six. I would start Tony Pollard this week.
Speaker 16 (33:27):
He has been getting a lot of opportunity and turning
it into really good fantasy production. He has averaged sixty
five percent of the snats this season and is averaging
nineteen opportunities per game. That has led to him scoring
fifteen or more fantasy points in three or four week weeks. Plus,
Colts are top five and rushing and receiving yards allowed
(33:47):
to running backs, So not only is he a good
start most weeks, this could be a week he hits
a home run, nor maybe even a Grand Slam if
you would.
Speaker 7 (33:58):
Now you're speaking my language, this is what I like
for you. I want to get to some sorry, Mike,
let's go back.
Speaker 8 (34:04):
I want to get to some receivers.
Speaker 7 (34:06):
Well, Actually, what I really want to ask you is
I'm in a two quarterback league. I could start either
Ad O'Connell, Spencer Raler or Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 8 (34:12):
But no, give me some receivers to start here. Sorry, Tom,
give me some receivers to start for you.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
We'll talk off air about who you should start at quarterback.
Speaker 16 (34:21):
But I think DJ Moore is a must start option
this week in London. Not only is he coming off
his best game of the year, but so is Caleb Williams,
where he looks comfortable and that led to DJ Moore
giving you nearly twenty eight fantasy points, and he could
have an even better game potentially this week because the
Jags have allowed the most fantasy points per games two
(34:42):
wide receivers, and they particularly struggle against wide receivers out
wide and down the field, two areas where we know
more eats.
Speaker 8 (34:50):
And then Jaden Reed.
Speaker 16 (34:52):
He is shown to have such a high ceiling and
floor with Jordan Love averaging twenty five fantasy points per
game in three games with him, and the Cardinals are
top ten in yards allowed to wide receivers.
Speaker 10 (35:04):
But I love all the packers this week.
Speaker 16 (35:05):
I have a packer at every position in stardom, cittem
so go over at NFL dot com and see that
all right.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
I don't have a time machine to go back in
time and sit Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez. So give
me a time machine going forward into the future. And
who are we sitting this weekend?
Speaker 16 (35:22):
I think you should try to sit Gino Smith if
you have the capabilities too. He is just one passing
touchdown in each game this season, and in three career
matchups as a Seahawk against the forty nine Ers, he
has just one total passing touchdown and two interceptions. In
two of those three games, he was held to under
two hundred passing yards. His high market is just two
(35:44):
thirty eight, and only one quarterback has top two hundred
and twenty five yards against the Niners this season.
Speaker 1 (35:49):
I think you sit for Sean White as well.
Speaker 16 (35:52):
Over the last four weeks, he has thirty less rushing
yards than teammate Bucky Irving. Irving also has the only
rushing touch down in that span amongst the running backs,
and once even more worriesome is his targets continue to decline,
and in this four week span he is averaging just
eight Fantasy points per game and has not reached eleven
in a single one. And then Mark Andrews last week
(36:15):
was a step in the right direction for him, but
he still ran just sixteen routes in a game where
Lamar threw forty two times and he played only just
over half of the snaps. Plus, the Commanders have allowed
the fifth fewest fantasy points per game to tight ends
and they have not allowed a top ten tight end
this season.
Speaker 8 (36:33):
Plus the Ravens use three of them.
Speaker 16 (36:34):
So until we see better usage from Mark Andrews, I
think you could get away from him right now.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
A lot more from Florio at NFL dot com Slash
Start sit. Do not set your lineups without reading that story.
Michae left, thank you very much for being here. As always,
DJ Moore is a must started fantasy this week. I'm
thinking a wild guest Caleb Williams is as well against
a rather putrid Jaguars defense coming up after this. Say
(37:00):
I've gotten that to Bucky Brooks. She'll be making the
trip to London.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
He'll break down.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
What we're seeing from pick number one after this, Sunny Insiders, Jee.
Speaker 11 (37:15):
Everybody in the world watching broke.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
We got to live up today.
Speaker 11 (37:17):
Make a public.
Speaker 9 (37:18):
You'll give you all today.
Speaker 15 (37:19):
Keep believing every place, every snap, don't break it.
Speaker 10 (37:23):
Listen to Pocket.
Speaker 17 (37:26):
When it came, look gone.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Right, pick it up a little bit.
Speaker 5 (37:30):
Let's have so fun man, you proper Perpetett Road.
Speaker 10 (37:36):
I'm like a fucking take touch round.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
You read that to fucking.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
Nice little hype video there Live from London, Trevor Lawrence
and the Jacks take on Caleb Williams and the Bears
on NFL Network, Rise, Shine and watch Sunday, October thirteenth
at nine thirty am Eastern only on NFL Network and
NFL Plus. Subscription required for NFL Plus. And before he
got on the plane, Caleb sat down with our own
(38:07):
Kyle Brand.
Speaker 15 (38:10):
I have some terms and some phrases that the Bears
fans have used to describe you and what you mean
to the future of the franchise.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
This is my favorite one.
Speaker 17 (38:17):
You're ready, Messiah, Messiah. I think when I when I
hear that, I think of Doune. You know, even that
movie I couldn't have done all by himself. So it
goes to having the team, and you know the guys
behind you and believe in you, and believing in an offense,
believe in each other and having that bond to be
able to go out there and win.
Speaker 11 (38:37):
So it's kind of funny, all right.
Speaker 5 (38:44):
And now Bucky is back.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Before he gets on the plane to London, Bucky, you
just heard from Caleb Williams there briefly. How does he
build on what was really his finest performance last Sunday?
Speaker 3 (38:56):
Yeah, yeah, I was standing performance last Sunday.
Speaker 15 (38:58):
You think about having a three D of your game
is second three under our game of the season.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
But it was different than the first one that he
had against the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 15 (39:05):
Against the Colts, he threw fifty two times, too many
pass attempts for a young quarterback still trying to make
his way into the league. What the Bears and Williams
have discovered less is more for the number one overall pick.
The last two games, he's had fewer than thirty pass attempts.
He's been more efficient, more effective, three touchdowns, no interceptions,
and the Bears are leaning on all parts of their office,
(39:28):
which makes the game easy for the quarterback. If Caleb
Williams continues to play on time on schedule, the Bears
have an opportunity to see their number one quarterback, the
number one overall pick continue to grow into the franchise
quarterback that they expect, but it's slowly but surely. When
it comes to the approach, less is more. That is
the most effective way to utilize Kayleb Williams right now.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
Well, Trevor Lawrence was also effective last week. They finally
got their first win of the season in Jacksonville.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
How do they build on that? How do they make
it two in a row?
Speaker 15 (40:00):
Bucky Well, I think the Coats were the perfect team
for Trevor Lawrence to get back on track, just because
of the way that Gus Bradley plays zone defense, umbrella coverage.
There's a quarterback to take the checkdown after check down
after check down. And what Trevor Lawrence discovered is by
making some layups early check down short throws then moving
the intermediate, it made it easier for him to hit
(40:22):
on those deep balls that he missed earlier in the season.
If he continues to take the discipline and the patience
that he's played against the Colts, the big things that
we saw in that game against the Colts will show
up again.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
He has to learn.
Speaker 15 (40:35):
Look, quarterbacking is about taking what the defense gives him.
If he keeps it simple in his mind while maintaining
the discipline. He can continue to build upon this performance
with other performances that are very similar to what we
saw last Sunday.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
I love Ernie early morning football, Bucky, have a great
trip to London's safe travels. And when we return, we
have new power rankings, and we are going to look
at the Atlanta Falcons because there one of the biggest
risers to find out how big a rise they made
in the power rankings come back, So that's next on
the Insiders.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
Look at the latest power rankings on NFL dot com.
According to our Eric Adholmes, still has the Vikings up
at the top five and zero as they head into
the by followed by the also unbeaten Chiefs. Then the
Lions have a big one this week against the Cowboys,
the Texans and the Ravens. How about that for an
zero to two start, creeping up into the top five.
(41:37):
A lot of movers and shakers in those power rankings
as well. How about the Falcons jumping up a full
seven spots. The Broncos, Yes, Denver's on a three game
winning streak. Chicago also coming off their best game last
week against the Panthers, some of the ones dropping, the
forty nine ers, the Jets, the Colts, those we've been discussing,
certainly a big opportunity for the Jets do make a
(41:59):
jump back up this week against the Bills. We also
had one more set of power rankings that we wanted
to get to here before the end of the show,
because this is certainly a very special episode of The Insiders.
Our coordinated producer Jeff Collette is celebrating his birthday today,
so we wanted to give you the power rankings of Jeff.
(42:20):
Collette says, I think the number one. We'd all agree, Ian,
what the heck?
Speaker 3 (42:25):
That's it, right, No, check out.
Speaker 7 (42:29):
This action is something that I've incorporated into regular life.
I think it's a great phrase, and that would be
number one for me, Number one in the power rank You.
Speaker 6 (42:36):
Guys missed one. I told you you should have. You
should have crowdsourced this one. Solid gold solid gold, should
be solid.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Gold, solid gold. Yeah, I missed that one.
Speaker 8 (42:46):
That's true.
Speaker 5 (42:47):
Put that over number tens.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
Yeah, here's some good news.
Speaker 10 (42:53):
There he is.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
There, he is, happy birthday. Jeff's heading to dinner right
after this show, so he's telling us all right, hard
and faster, hard and faster. Tom there we fast right,
sell the goal, solid goal.
Speaker 6 (43:08):
Everybody else there, everybody else in that control room seems
so happy for him that it was his.
Speaker 10 (43:15):
No realction.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Give us the control room one more time.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
Let's see it, everybody.
Speaker 5 (43:23):
Right, that's right, yeah.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
Collapse all right.
Speaker 8 (43:28):
Birthday.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
He's going to take every one of those people out
to dinner tomorrow night. I just put that on Jeff's
plate and he's going to put some food on yours.
Thanks as always for watching the Insiders. We are on
YouTube and the NFL tail on faster and platforms tomorrow.
Speaker 11 (43:42):
We'll see you then
