Speaker 1 (00:07):
We are just two days away from the twenty twenty
five NFL schedule release, but a handful of games are
already set. We will break down several division duels, including
a familiar faux heading to Philadelphia in Week one, plus
another hosting the defending champs in December. It's often said
that when a team has two quarterbacks really has none.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Well, the Browns have five. With a little luck, they
might just find one.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Here from Dylan Gabriel and Shanor Sanders coming off rookie
Mini Caamp about the early stages of the battle in Berea.
We'll also talk to Cardinals rookie cornerback Will Johnson, who
has moved on from his draft weekend drop. So what
does he having start with the teams that passed on him?
Probably the same as I had for Ian when I
saw his shirt. Welcome Inside with the Insiders alongside Ian
(00:55):
Rappaport and Mike Garafalo, I am Tom Pell with Sarah.
One hundred and fifteen days out from the kickoff of
the twenty twenty five NFL season, and as of this morning,
we now know who exactly is going to be playing
in that game. The defending Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles
will host an other than Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.
(01:20):
That's how the season kicks off on September fourth, the
first time these teams have squared off in the season
opener since a quarter century ago. And Steven Jones certainly
sounds fired up.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Well, let's it certainly motivates an auto organization. I know,
from the players to the coaches, they were so fired
up about it this morning. You know, everybody in the
organizations looking forward to that. Certainly a disappointing year for
us last year compared to the you know, championship year
the Eagles have. As you said, it's a huge Hoge rivalry.
(01:57):
I no love loss, but a lot of us and
for what they've accomplished there. But hopefully both teams will
be healthy going into that game and should be interested.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Fox has a doubleheader on the Saturday of Week sixteen.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
It is going to include a matchup the c right.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
There, the Eagles going up against the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
This is going to be one of the.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Themes, especially in these early release games, a whole lot
of Eagles. Also an NFC North Tilt Packers and Bears
in Week sixteen on that Saturday as well, and just
moments ago, Amazon has announced two of its games. Black
Friday Football is back once again. You guessed at the
Eagles taking on the Bears on November twenty eighth, and
(02:42):
then come Christmas time it's going to be an AFC
West battle the Broncos and the Chiefs on Christmas Day.
We still got what two hundred and sixty seven and
more games to go eat?
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Of those first five, what jumps out at.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
You the thing that I first take a look at.
First of all, I was a little surprised. I gotta say,
to see Eagles Cowboys as the opener. Obviously going to
be a great game, high watteds game, big time stars,
the entire country watching always fun a lot of times,
those sorts of games which are gonna draw great ratings
literally no matter what put them at any time. Put
(03:18):
them at midnight on a Tuesday, everyone's going to watch.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I was actually surprised that's going to be the opener.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
But what it really does is it ramps things up
unbelievably quickly. If the Eagles win, then given the hype
that would come with that, it's going to be like,
are they going to repeat?
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Right?
Speaker 4 (03:34):
I mean, you beat the Cowboys again, everyone's watching. I
mean half the world is probably rooting against Dallas anyway.
It's going to be like, are the Eagles the team
that's gonna repeat? But God forbid Dallas wins, and it's
gonna be Kyle Brandt's nightmare, right, It's gonna be Is
this Cowboys team?
Speaker 2 (03:49):
For real?
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Can this Cowboys team win the Super Bowl? What is
Brian Schottenheimer's future as the Cowboys coach?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
You see?
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Really the one to fix this is George Pickens, the
difference maker. I mean, if the Cowboys win, it is
going to turbo charge everything for the next I don't know,
eight days until at least the Cowboys or nine is
whatever it is to the Cowboys play again. It is
a really fun one because the analysis and over analysis.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Is going to be bonkers, and I'm here for all
of it.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
And I thought you were going where I was gonna
go with this one, because yeah, usually you save the
Cowboys for later in the season. They did it the
week the year after the COVID year, and I think
that that was a message like Cowboys right out of
the gate.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
The NFL is back.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
The stadiums are full, but other than that, usually you
keep that Cowboys game till later, putting it week one.
I don't know, like maybe this is a little bit
of bulletin board material for Brian Schottenheimer and his crew
down there in Dallas, because it's saying, well, let's get
it while we can, because it's a new head coach
and there are some maybe lower expectations in Dallas. If
(04:50):
we saved this for like week five, six seven, like
maybe the Cowboys won't be off to the greatest start.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
But we know week one. Everybody zero and zero.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
So his name is Mike Norrith, VP of broadcast Planning Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
You can put his picture up on the.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
Wall there and use that as your motivation for this
game to come out of the gate and knock off
the defending champions. What's up, Mike North, This is your time,
this is your month. This is where your name gets
on the insiders more than the eleven other months in
the year.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
The Bears ended up with two of the first five.
Announcer certainly says something we would think about how the
schedule makers feel about Ben Johnson the Chiefs. As much
as we talk about, hey, there's not there's gonna be
one team on Christmas. Well, the Chiefs are always good.
Travis Kelcey looks great in an oversized Santa Cot so
why not, and the commanders of the National TV game
for them as well. You'll get more announcements tomorrow, including
(05:41):
Good Morning Football kicking off at eight am Eastern Tomorrow.
They are going to announce the international game slate, most
of which you can see right here on NFL Network.
There'll also be another game announced on Good Morning America.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
We've got a couple of announcements as well, and then
finally get ready for the twenty twenty five nflc like
never before with the highly anticipated NFL schedule release every game,
reveal all of them at once, every robbery, every rematch,
in every rookie debut. Wednesday, eight pm Eastern, mark your calendar.
Get all the details at navil dot com slash schedule release.
(06:15):
One player who will not be on the field come
that schedule release is Derek Carr, the four time Pro
Bowl quarterback who announced early Saturday morning that he is
going to be moving on from the NFL in light
of a shoulder injury that he has continued to deal with. Here,
Kellen Moore first year head coach for these Saints. Your thoughts.
Speaker 6 (06:38):
First of all, you respect and appreciate so much that
Derek's done in this league and for the way he's
done it, the the on the field performance, the off
the field person that he's showcased, and the impact he's
had on so many people in this in this profession
is really really special, and so certainly, you know, coming here,
I've always had so much respect and appreciation for him,
and you know, as we've gone through this process, obviously
(06:59):
this is how it kind of ultimately was settled. It
was really good communication through the whole process as far
as navigating this again, you know, challenging circumstances with him
being injured at the end of the year and then
just kind of navigating things throughout the whole off season process.
And so you know, I think, you know, Derek, the
people that are part of his life have communicated really well.
(07:20):
With the Saints. I think there's been really good communications,
So you know, we feel like it was done the
right way.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Mike, he was interesting hearing Kellen Moore praising the communication
because there was a lot of back and forth here
for several months about the.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Future of Derek Carr. What more do we know?
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Yeah, there was and I know that folks saw this
and said, wait, Derek carrs is going to walk away
from thirty million like he could have gotten the surgery,
stayed on IR the entire season and collected that thirty million.
Derek Carr didn't want to go out that way and
at this point just felt like my understanding that he
was done and it was time to move on. And
is another thirty million going to change Derek Carr's life?
(08:00):
He's made two hundred million, Like, what's the difference. I
understand some people say it's million, it's thirty million.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I get that.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
But again, that would have looked incredibly selfish had he
done that. And this was not a selfish move. This
was not something that was communicated selfishly at all. In fact,
even when Derek Carr went down to meet the Saints
recently to figure out the way out of this thing,
for both sides, it was a brief meeting. It was
a cordial meeting. It was not antagonistic at all. There
was no threat of any you know, going back and
(08:28):
getting money. In fact, Derek Carr Pundy made it easy
for the Saints to say, yeah, Okay, then we just.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Won't recoup any of the signing bonus as well.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
So it was a bit of a give and take
at the end, but it was a quick one and
Derek Carr deciding that, you know, he wasn't going to
sit there and just collect money while on injured reserve.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
That's the decision that he made. Unselfish in that regard.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
And also I know folks are saying, well, when's he
going to come out of retirement and play for somebody else.
My understanding is Derek Carr made this decision expecting to retire,
has no intention of I mean a thing change in
the future. I have no idea, but right at this point,
right now, intends to retire and remain retired.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Let me echo what you're talking about, Mike, because my
understanding is Derek Carr does not intend to have the
shoulder surgery. I don't know, maybe at some point in
the future, but he is not planning to have it
right now. What that means is that shoulder, which could
maybe only get to like fifty or seventy five percent,
is not going to be one hundred percent, not by
the start of this season, now by the start next season.
(09:25):
It sounds like all the rehab in the world wouldn't
fix a torn labram without surgery.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
So what does that mean.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
It means Derek Carr is going to be able to
throw batting practice. He's gonna be able to be quarterback
in flag football. He's gonna be able to go to
his kid's recess and be automatic QB, probably throw on
the beach.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
All good.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
No issues as far as throwing for an NFL team,
I do not see that coming anytime in the future.
And you're right, he really did the Saints of Major Salt, Mike.
It wouldn't have looked selfish if he took the thirty
million that was rightfully his. That was guarantee it would
have been selfish. Now me, I would take all the money,
But Derek Carr is a better person than me and
probably all of you guys. He gave back the money,
(10:04):
a big time gift for the Saints cap in twenty
twenty six.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
And it's also a clean break for everyone here because
had he decided to go on IR with a pre
existing a degenerative shoulder condition, as the Saints put it here,
you potentially could have had a grievance. You could have
had legal action. This allows everybody to know exactly what
the terms are. Derek Carr not playing in twenty twenty five.
At minimum, here the Saints will get a cap credit
in twenty twenty six. That'll help them dig out of
(10:30):
the type of hole that they have put themselves in.
From that perspective, somebody has to be able to throw
not at flag football, not batting practice, but actually for
the Saints this season, they drafted a guy in the
second round named Tyler Shuck who spent seven years in
college and is not a doctor.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
He could be QB one.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
I think all I mean, that's all you can ask
for is an opportunity at any position, and I'm going
to treat it the same way as if you know
whoever is on the roster. I got to continue to
grow and get better and do my best to elevate
the QB room and the team and do everything I can.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Spencer Ratler also on the roster. Jake Hayner is on
the roster, Mike, but for the Saints, segualte and take
Tyler Schuck at the top of the second round, knowing
that according to some of the coaches.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Next if I talked to before the draft.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
This might be the most pro ready guy because of
what he's been exposed to and what he ran at
Louisville to have the competition, But it sure seems like
Shuck time could becoming.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Well, he's seen plenty of different things in college.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
Matter of fact, even from an injury standpoint, all the
things that he's been through, He's had to deal with
these things as well as different locations. We had him
on the Insider before the draft and he said, all
that stuff I've gone through, I know the things that
can be thrown at you as a quarterback in the NFL.
I've already had that experience. So yeah, I think you,
if you're this is from the Saints perspective, you try
(11:48):
to take the positive out of this one in the
fact that this is a guy that is a little
bit battle tested at this point, he's got a shot
at a starting job right out of the game.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Yeah, and the best case scenario for the New Orleans
Saints is that Tyler Schuck wins the starting job, either
out of camp or just whenever he wins it takes
it runs with it.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
This is your guy, no more issues.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Then you get a small little window where the quarterback
is making not a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
You could build around him.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
Just thinking quickly. Doctor Shuck is a great nickname. Tom,
no disrespect to Tyler Schuck, who's a good dude, was
on The Insiders. Doctor Shuck is a great nickname or
doctor Tyler.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Tyler Schuck went fortieth overall exactly one hundred and four
picks after that.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
A guy that, frankly we've.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Talked about more on this show, Shador Sanders, just went
through his first rookie camp now with the Browns. Over
the weekend. They got another quarterback as well, in Dylan Gabriel.
As for Shadeur, sounds like he's happy with the start
he's off to.
Speaker 8 (12:40):
My story's gonna be similar. You know, I was a
late round draft prick. But we're here now, so none
of that stuff matters. That's just mattered on the day,
and I'm just excited to be here, ready to work.
Like my job here isn't approved people wrong, Like I
prove myself right. That's and I fully self believe, you know,
(13:01):
and uh with those people say this this is the opinion,
So I don't truly care. They don't really live in
my mental space.
Speaker 9 (13:10):
It's not new to me, I've done it at you know,
every stop, and I've done it you're at every level.
So thank goodness for that and great preparation that. But
also know that, you know, my competition is yesterday. You know,
how can I be better than I was yesterday? So
that's what I'm focused on, and continue to create an
environment that you want to be a part of, and
(13:33):
that's all you can do.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
There's a pretty short list of teams that have drafted
two quarterbacks in the same draft, much less taking him
this close together. Ian third round for Dylan Gabriel, who
clearly was the pick for Andrewberry, and Kevin Stefanski. Fifth
round Shador Sanders, a value pick who's sitting there who
they obviously thought enough of to bring him in. You
also got Kenny Pickett, You got Joe Flacco at some
point possibly longshot, you could have Deshaun Watson in the
(13:56):
mix as well. It's very very early, but this is
going to be a escinated summer, and Brion, it really is.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
You know what this kind of reminds me of this
Browns quarterback room right now is the Seattle Seahawks in
twenty twelve. Right, Like the theory was they needed to
find a franchise guy. They signed Matt Flynn, a drafter,
Russell Wilson. They traded for Charlie Whitehurst. I believe Greg Berong,
but I think that's the guy. And they said, I
don't know who's gonna be the starter. Just let it
all play out, throw a bunch of quarterbacks at the wall.
(14:25):
See if one sticks and ended up being a third
rounder named Russell Wilson. And for the Browns, that's really
where they are now. I know they have an extra
first rounder, so if they got to go get a
quarterback in next year's draft, they have the ammo to
do it. But there is a real possibility that someone
on this roster. I have no earthly idea who someone
could be sure could be Gilan gabral whoever becomes the
(14:45):
franchise guy, or at least makes it a real challenge
to decide what to do in next year's draft.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
That is the best case scenario.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
One thing we've learned, Mike, no one knows anything with
the quarterback world. All these guys got as good a
chance as anyone.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
I would think. We'll see what happens.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
And if you, I mean, if you're looking at a
depth chart from veterans to rookiest, you put you to
our Sanders fourth. I think he's probably the most attention
we're going to see for a fourth string quarterback ever,
and he's.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Gonna have to work his way up.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
And I think that the way that the draft fell,
the Browns are looking at it like maybe that's not
a bad thing, because I mean, in the end, if
you've got to cut bait at some point, there's a
fifth round pick, and when you draft the player in
the fifth round, it's a coin flip asid whether or
not he's going to make the roster his rookie season
out of training camp, and if it doesn't happen to
maybe even bring him back on the practice squad. Whatever,
(15:37):
you got a lot to gain here and very little
to lose. If you're the Browns, Shidora Sanders has got
a lot to lose and a lot to gain. So
this is just going to be a fascinating situation to
watch throughout the entire offseason in summer.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
The good census league wide in this quarterback class was
there was really only one guy who profiled as a
surefire starter, and now was the guy with number one
overall cam Ward would not yet been named QB one
for the Titans, but all expectations would be that he
is going to be under center come Week one. For now,
he and the rest of the Titans draft class at
a Savannah Bananas baseball game. You'll notice, Yes, that's a
(16:15):
guy with no sleeves. Anybody really here, there's people in capes.
This is all part of the Savannah Banana's experience right here.
What would the banana ball version of the NFL be?
I imagine if that existed, cam Ward would be pretty good
at it. The Bengals, meanwhile, have an ongoing situation. They
handled their wide receivers earlier in the offseason, they still
(16:38):
have not handled a new contract for their star pass
rusher Trey Hendrickson, who led the NFL last season in sacks,
put out a statement through ESPN earlier today in which,
to paraphrase, he complained about the fact that the Bengals
aren't communicating and aren't really moving to get something done.
(16:58):
Ian That brings us to the reality of these situations
in the NFL, which if things don't get done prior
to the draft, for instance, the possibility of trading Trey
Hendrickson the Bengals head offers.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
They chose not to move him.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
There's not really a lot of urgency to do deals
in May, so this is potentially something that we're gonna
be talking about for a while here, whether Trey Hendrickson
likes it or not.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
The first thing I would say is Trey Hendrickson deserves
an extension. He is a great player who has outplayed
his previous deal or deals, however many alterations.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
There have been.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
He deserves the bag, as they say, and should be
one of the higher paid edges in the NFL. The
problem is deals don't usually happen in the middle of May.
Usually they happen right before the draft or right before
mandatory mini camp. But it's like is a guy going
to participate or not, or even more likely before training camp.
That's kind of when the leverage shifts a little bit
to the player, where teams want their players on the
(17:53):
field and players are like, well, if you don't pay me,
I'm going to probably show up but not participate.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
That's where the leverage is. So I get Mike Hendrickson
wanting money.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
Now, it just doesn't really work like that, And yes
there is angst, but for the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
They're like, yes, we hear you, but it doesn't have
to be now. Now.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Meanwhile, the Bengals have Shamar Stewart the pick for them,
they're not participating in the rookie camp.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
A holdout.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
We never see holdouts in the spring. Then first round
pick holding out here because the negotiations on his contract
have not gone well.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Now, it used to be like these deals didn't.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Get done until the end of the spring, if not
right before a training camp.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Had the holdouts in the camp and.
Speaker 5 (18:38):
All those players participated all through the spring without a contract.
You've got a participation agreement. Usually that's signed and if
you get hurt. Go back to Dante Fowler, the third
overall pick for the Jaguars years ago, tore his ACL
on the first day of rookie camp. If I remember
that correctly, and got his full deal, got it fully guaranteed,
Usually you're extremely protected. In this case, Samar Stewart deciding
(19:00):
in this one. You know what, even the participation agreement,
I don't like, I'm going to make a statement right here,
you know how loudly is that going to resonate through
a Bengals building that doesn't usually buckle to this kind
of stuff, probably not very loudly, but a lot of
folks looking at it from the outside now and saying
they're just not taking care of their veteran players, and
they're not taking care of their rookie players and feel
like this is easy target practice for the Bengals.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Tamar Stuart was in the green room a couple of
weeks ago in Green Bay, got his moment on stage.
Scared the hell out of our friend Jamie ard All there.
Will Johnson was also in that green room. Did not
hear his name called on night one. It's fair to
say he has not forgotten that. We'll talk to the Cardinals'
second round pick about what it meant to not go
in round one. Now things are going so far in
(19:44):
the desert. But Will Johnson joins us next.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
You know what's funny, like I'm gonna air dirty laundry here.
But you know, as the drafts going on, you know,
coaches are textan back and forth or not just our staff,
but other staffs. You know, people he worked with or
that you know, and you make a pick, and certain
coaches like certain guys and like when we picked him,
at him literally like eight defensive coordinators text me like.
Speaker 6 (20:13):
Oh my God, like number one on board, like blah
blah blah blah, like.
Speaker 10 (20:17):
They all want you know what I mean, and forever,
you know, for whatever reason, he came to us, and
so we're just like Walt, we're excited to get to
work with him too, man, But I know he's excited.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
And we are now joined and excited to be joined. Bye.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Will Johnson, the new Cardinals cornerback who Jonathan Gannon is
obviously very very happy to have out there in Arizona. Will,
thanks for joining us, man. Tell us, what have been
up to so far out there in the desert.
Speaker 11 (20:45):
Yeah, thanks for having me. I've just been out here.
It's gott known rookie mini camp. Today it was our
first day with the Vest. So everything's been going smooth
and I'm just everything's great so far.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Well.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
I want to go back to the draft experience, which
I know was a bittersweet one, right, but the way
Jonathan Gatton describes it, obviously it was tough. You waited
far longer than you expected, and then you get the
call from the Cardinals and you learn where you're going
and you're going to join a team that not only
couldn't use you. But a defensive staff that really does
(21:19):
make the best use of its talents puts their players
in position to make plays. How quickly does it go
from somebody should have dropped me earlier to Okay, I
got an opportunity, let's go.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
Pretty quickly.
Speaker 11 (21:31):
I mean, right after you get that call, you're just
happy to be with that team. And it was just
a little motivation, that's all it was. So yeah, I'm
just just like you said. It's a great system, great scheme.
I do a lot of great things with their cornerback.
So I'm excited to go out there and make a
lot of plays and have fun in the system and
with this team.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole online
earlier today will watching Will Johnson versus Marvin Harrison junior
highlights from the Michigan versus Wiles State days.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Listen, car is very talented.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
He catches a few balls, but there's one highlight where
you jam him all the way out of bounds.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I think you pick off a slant to him as well.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Is there one play from those college matchups that jumps
out in your mind.
Speaker 11 (22:12):
I'll probably say that first one when I jammed am
out of bounds first played the game. That's probably my
favorite one.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Is that is that your game? I mean because it's
is that is that message setting? Or is that like
the way you play for people who have not watched
you fully?
Speaker 11 (22:33):
Oh, that's part of my game. That's that was just
what my game plan was going into that game. What
I wanted to do, what I what I set out
to do going into it. So I like to mix
it up. I mean, this defense we mix it up
a lot too, so press man, you know, press Bill,
a lot of different other things. So that's just one
aspect of the game. But that's what I felt like
bringing out that day.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Not to harp on the mar of an aspect of this,
but this is a guy you had a pretty good
ravel with in college. Are you looking forward to seeing
him on a daily basis? Have you talked to him
at all?
Speaker 11 (23:06):
Yeah, I mean, obviously I'm here with him, so definitely
talk to him. But yeah, we're both looking forward to it.
I mean, it's only gonna get us both better competing
like that every day and practice and then taking it
to Sundays and using that as fuel and just sharpening
our craft every day throughout the weekend, just making it
easier for us when we go out there on Sundays.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
You know, history has a funny way of framing and
describing situations. Right, So you wait all the time in
the draft, and then the Cardinals come up, Patrick Peterson
does the pick. It's you, and then from what I understand,
you then got a FaceTime from Tell me what that
whole experience with Pat p really, you know, not that
(23:49):
I need to tell you one of the best to
ever do it, Like, what is that experience like just
with him, that FaceTime and all of that.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Yeah, that was special.
Speaker 11 (23:59):
I mean, you know with the whole draft process, how
that went and then ended up getting picked, and that's
who caused my name. I wouldn't want any other way.
As a guy I used to look up to growing up.
Just like when I was at Michigan, I had a
great mentor in Charles Woodson, and I got to talk
to Pat Peterson and hopefully have another great mentor here
and I can follow his footsteps and a similar way
(24:19):
I did at Michigan. That's what I'm looking forward to doing.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Will you talk about that fuel that drives you? And
I know he had mentioned what played out during Draft weekend.
Here the Cardinals are released behind the scenes clip where
you're talking to him and saying, basically, the league is
going to pay for everybody passing on you as long
as they did. Now that the emotions have kind of
worn off a little bit in terms of the rawness
of it here, how much of it all is that
(24:44):
something that still is in the back of your mind
in terms of how you're going to approach this thing
based on what happened in the draft.
Speaker 11 (24:51):
Yeah, I mean I've moved on from it. I've moved forward,
but it'll always be in the back of my head
and it will always be a little bit of motivation.
Had that chip on my shoulder.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
So, so you had mentioned at the beginning of this
veterans are now in and you know, you start to
get to the the OTAs and eventually you guys are
going to get to mini camp. But it starts to
be uh starts to get a little more real. What
is the sort of I guess comfort. I know it's early,
but what's the comfort level like now that you're You've
gone from like excitement of like oh, drafted and rookies
(25:24):
and now it's like you get to just play football, Like,
what's the sort of acclamation process like for you.
Speaker 11 (25:31):
Yeah, they did a great job, but you know, easing
us into it and rooking mini camp, you know, just
doing individual drills and learning the scheme, learning the system,
doing installs and things like that, just to make sure
that we're up to par so from when we got
there with the VEST that it wasn't too much for us.
So you know, not with the VEST, but walking through,
walking through with them and doing things with them. So
(25:52):
we're all crought up to speed and learning with the
VEST now, so we're all growing together.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Well. Congratulates man, enjoy Arizona. We appreciate it. Coming on,
let's do it again.
Speaker 11 (26:05):
Thank you, appreciate you guys.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
All the Cardinals are gutting it out in the heat
down there in Tempe. The Rams are gonna behead of
the MAUI for Mini camp. I'm sure that is strictly
for football reason. It's a lot of marketing too, and
absolutely nothing about making sure that everybody has a great
time in a tropical paradise at a time that the
rest of the league is working. Let's welcome in our
(26:27):
Steve Whites to the conversation. Ian It's been an interesting
journey here for the Rams through the course of this offseason.
I'll trace him back to Worth the combine. There were
real questions about the future of Matthew Stafford, who finally,
as you reported last week, has a contract that locks
him in for this year and potentially beyond.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
First of all, I guess Cabo is booked, so instead
of Cabo is mawing, and that would really bring this
whole thing full circle. Have the whole mini camp in
that little reserve when they first got Matthew Stafford. Anyway,
let's talk about stafford contract. You see on the lower
third there. Stafford left twenty million dollars on the table
to stay with the Rams, that I believe from a
Sports Illustrated report.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
I believe that is correct.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
And we talked about this at the time of Stafford
not agreeing to terms with the Rams because the contract
wasn't really done, but basically telling them that he wanted
to stay, and the contract ended up being forty four
million dollars for this year, then essentially an option for
forty million dollars next year.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
It is probably the right amount.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
It is an amount that means Stafford didn't have to
take a pay cut to stay with the Rams.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
It means the Rams could pay him a.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Somewhat reasonable salary. I think most important show Steve, he
did not want to leave. He thought about leaving, He
did not want to leave. He has the opportunity potentially
to make the playoffs, to win the Super Bowl, all
the things you're out there for the Rams and Stafford
with McVeigh, he just didn't.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Want to leave.
Speaker 12 (27:50):
And I think that's what it came down to him
and his family. Like living in southern California, they won
a Super Bowl here, his kids are getting a little
bit older, their used to the environment. Plus, like you
started this segment, they go to mini camp.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Over in Maui.
Speaker 12 (28:01):
Plus, Stafford's coming back to a very loaded roster. Remember
they added Davonte Adams to go with Pooka Nikua. They've
got this defense that added Poona Ford at nose tackle.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
They're pretty complete. And then in the draft end they.
Speaker 12 (28:12):
Get Terrence Ferguson the tight end out of the University
of Oregon. This is an interesting chip because Tyler Higbey,
the tight end who Staffords played most of his time
with with the Rams, he just turned thirty two years old.
He's in the last year of his deal. But now
they get a flex tight end. The Rams wide receivers
to two at well Xavier Smith in the slot.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
They're smaller guys. Now they're getting kind of a move
tight end.
Speaker 12 (28:36):
It's where if they want to go three big receivers
with Puka Davante and now with Ferguson, they can do that.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
So they this gives them options. They can open up
their offense.
Speaker 12 (28:44):
Plus they've got an in house replacment for Higbee, like
I said, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
See, we haven't talked a lot about Terrence Ferguson through
since the draft, even though the guy was the second
round pick.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Yeah, over in San Francisco. Who's the name.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
We also haven't really talked a whole lot about. That's
been on your mind.
Speaker 12 (29:02):
Yeah, Jordan Watkins, the rookie wiers here, fourth round draft pick,
got old miss. He is going to have some opportunities
early in the season to get on the field. Remember
Brandon Iyuk, who was kind of his cop coming out
at least in terms of physical specs, is still coming
back from that knee injury. Remembering towards ACL and his
mcl so, Watkins is gonna have an opportunity to earn
(29:23):
some playing time early. Now they've got Ricky Piersall, Juwan
Jennings a very good player. They got DeMarcus Robinson, a
big wide receiver from the Rams to go up there.
So they've got some veterans in place. But if he
flashes in training camp, and you know with the forty nine,
is he better block once they get into pads in
the run game, he's got an opportunity to see some
playing time.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Yeah, it sure does.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
Really a question, it's not a question of who's going
to be thrown in the football truly is how rich
is the person who's going to be thrown in the football?
Black Perdie's contract situation still remains in fux. Now he
has showed up, he has done well, he has done
kind of right by the team, and I would say
minimize distraction my understanding. Really no new new news here,
but things are going well.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Talks are progressing.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
It didn't sound like a deal is imminent, but at
least both sides are communicating. And for brock Purty in
the forty nine ers, that's really where you want to be.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
His number is going to start with a five.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
So he is expected to be a fifty million dollar quarterback.
Just where in that fifty range he's going to be.
And I would not be surprised at all if we
get a deal before the season. In fact, that would
be surprised Tom. If there wasn't if there was no
news the he played at his current deal, that would
be a surprise.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
However, I say.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
That Giants picked a whole bunch of players in the
twenty twenty five NFL Draft, picked the quarterback, that picked
a generation of talent at edge rusher.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
But I got a.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
Funny feeling you're going to be hearing a lot about
this guy, Cam Scatabo, the do it all running back,
fourth rounder, who I would say, for a variety of reasons,
certainly garnered the public's attention, which went to his time
for do his first for him to do his first
interview with the Giants.
Speaker 13 (30:58):
I mean, people want to say they can sleep, you know.
I have no issue with that. It's been something I've
had to deal with my whole life. So I'm going
to continue to do what I need to do to
be successful and play as long as I can in
this league.
Speaker 4 (31:12):
I feel like we're all underrated in our world as well,
bringing back Mike Garafoam Mark Ross, thank you as always
for hanging out with us and joining us. Let's talk
about some rookies who have been in perfect position to succeed.
I'll stick with the Giants, not cam Scattabo. Tell me
about Abdul Card and why you believe that about him?
Speaker 14 (31:35):
Number one on my list no matter where he went,
he would have been number one on my list just
because this guy is just dynamic. But let's talk about
with a few bright spots for the Giants last year,
and it was the pass rush there led by Dexter
Lawrence and Brian Burns, who actually were eighth in the
league in sacks.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
So here you go.
Speaker 14 (31:51):
You throw Abdul Carter in the mix there with such
versatility with those two guys, maybe get km On Tibodeau,
a little incentive, defended, a little harder, down in and
down out. So you got that whole mix of guys
right there. So without dual Carter, say, man, let me
go feast because all the attentions on Burns and Dexter fellas.
So watch out Rookie of the year right there.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
How about a guy who might walk, I'll do a
carter maybe not head up, like maybe he just kind
of pulls around or there's a switch or something like that.
Tyler Booker, because he's inside playing guard for the Cowboys,
it's definitely in a position to succeed.
Speaker 14 (32:25):
Right well, you better believe Tyler Booker's going to be
trying to take his heart out of there, like he said,
take the love out of football. There for a whole
bunch of guys. And if you're an offensive lineman, you
want to get drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, who have
shown when Tyron Smith eight Pro Bowls, Zac Martin nine
Pro Bowls, and even Tyler Smith has already been in
two Pro Bowls. So they're trying to rebuild those building
(32:47):
blocks up there with another Tyler Guidon. So Dallas cornering
the market on massive guys offensive lineman named Tyler and
get back to those ways when they had the best
offensive line of the league and really mashing people.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
You know, one of the most obvious picks of the
drafts at least one of the most mocked picks of
the draft, was Malachi Starks to the Baltimore Ravens, so
much so that Eric to Costa was nervous that he
wouldn't be there because everyone knew they were taking him.
What kind of position is Malachi Starks in in Baltimore.
Speaker 14 (33:17):
Yeah, there was no substant fuge with Malachi Starts in
the Ravens as you said, and everybody had it.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
It's like when it happened and.
Speaker 14 (33:22):
It was shocking, but still like, okay, yeah, that's a
Ravens pick there. And to team up with Kyle Hamilton
and Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins, who I think is
going to be fantastic in year two in that secondary,
it just gets defensive coordinator Zach Or so much versatility
to move all of those guys around because they are
just football players who know how to play the game,
(33:44):
high IQ guys who play hard. So Malachi Starts could
not have landed in a better situation to learn with
the versatility that Kyle Hamilton already provided.
Speaker 5 (33:54):
All Right, now, let's talk Jack Besh with the Las
Vegas Raiders.
Speaker 14 (34:00):
Jack bash out of TCU, who I thought was supremely
underrated as a receiver. I thought he was up there
with those first round guys as far as talent. And
you talk about going into a situation where I think
he walks onto the Raiders as their number one wide receiver.
Already you just got to beat out to Kobe Myers
for that, So not the bar is not too high,
but all the attention you're going to go to brock
(34:20):
Bauers number one, and then of course the rookie Ashton
Genty who got taken at the top of the first round.
So here you go, all the attention there with the
defensive besh can come in there and say.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
I'm the number one guy.
Speaker 14 (34:30):
Gino, you've already thrown for four k two of the
last three years.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Keep throwing in me. I'll make some big plays for you.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Not a bad idea for the Las Vegas Raiders. I
like it, Mark, thank you very much. As all the
great stuff and some big time, big name rookies prime
for a lot of success this season.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Somewhere, so you're not the same Larry.
Speaker 5 (34:50):
Mike left cheer here, can well out here here and
he'll be puck.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Yeah, probably move away from Mike White. Usually he's still
the Sliders.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
See I mean here, then.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Show right, got some leads, shoes, some slides of air
and seer.
Speaker 5 (35:10):
Shorts and just kind of gets you started up getting
so I'm stuff. Yeah, that was my first thought was
why did he not have an open locker next to him?
Usually for star players, they have a lot of stuff.
First of all, a lot of stuff arrived, so you
need the extra space for that, and their star players,
you'd like to give them room, especially if they're large individuals.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Like Mike Evans.
Speaker 5 (35:31):
Hi, Sarah Walsh, Welcome, Hi, Happy belated Mother's Day to you.
I think we're talking Mother's Day coming up in a
couple of blocks.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Here in the show. But let's talk about the Buccaneers
right now.
Speaker 5 (35:39):
Let's talk about a Mecca Abuka and the impact that
he's making, the impression that he's making in Tampa Bay
so far.
Speaker 15 (35:46):
Well, first of all, the Buccaneers just wrapped up their
rookie mini camp over the weekend. They wrap that up
on Sunday. That doesn't mean that these guys go away.
A lot of them still at the facility. They're going
to be working out. They're not going to get back
together until May twenty seventh for the Organized Act activities.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
Again.
Speaker 15 (36:01):
Now, if you know Todd Bowles, he's not one to
be over the top about anyone, right, So when he
was asked about any of these guys and Meccha Buka,
any of these guys that rather this week and he said, look,
this is a T shirt and shorts kind of practices. However,
there's massive expectations and hope for Abuca because he's joining
a receiver group that could potentially be one of the best.
(36:21):
Jalen McMillan, who's going into his second year this season,
told me in the last couple of days he believes
they can be the best if they put in the
work this offseason. As far as Abuka, he said his
goal when he arrived there was to do everything that's
asked of them over these last couple of days, to
make a few mistakes as possible, and to play fast
and obviously that will come the more reps that they get.
(36:41):
And he's already getting to know his quarterback. Although it
wasn't Baker throwing to him over the weekend, but Baker
did take him out to brunch along with Emily Mayfield.
They took the whole family of Abuka out to brunch
along with some linemen. So they have been working together
at least when it comes to sitting down and ordering food.
But that's important stuff.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
Mike gi.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
Yeah, but don't get comfortable, mister Abuka, because one of
these days you're going to have to pick up that tab.
That's what rookies do, and it's going to be bigger
than that brunch tab. I promise you that. On the
other side of the ball, the Bucks making significant investments
in their secondary throughout the draft process.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Yeah, receiver wasn't exactly a position to need.
Speaker 15 (37:15):
We were just talking about who they used their first
round pick on, but then you look at the secondary,
and especially at cornerback, that is an issue that was
concerning for the Bucks simply from the depth perspective, because
they had a lot of injuries they dealt with last year.
So here's a couple of the things that they did.
Benjamin Morrison was their second round pick. He was out
there running around, which Todd Bule says was good to
see because he's coming off and hip injury coming out
(37:37):
of Notre Dame. Bowle says that they hope to have
him full speed by the time they get to training camp,
and it's obviously something they're going to monitor if he
can participate in o Ta's bull so that would be
a huge bonus. And then there's Jacob Parrish, their third
round pick, and I mentioned Tod doesn't really rave about anyone,
but he did say Parish was the fastest guy out
on the football field this weekend, and he did say
he flashed a little bit, had some interceptions. And then
(37:59):
Mike g because I know on this show you love
to talk about anyone with the name of Sanders, you
didn't tell me. I had to qualify it by which Sanders.
There is a Sanders on the Buccaneers. Shiloh Sanders assigned
immediately once this draft was over, so he's an undrafted
free agent for the Bucks. He met with the media
over the weekend and he fits what Tudboles is looking for.
He said he wants ballhawks and Sanders said that he
(38:22):
will force picks fumbles anyway he has to do it.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
That's what he's looking for.
Speaker 15 (38:26):
Bulls also praised his ability to communicate be.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
A leader out there.
Speaker 15 (38:30):
He's his safety and he said, yeah, just trying to
get comfortable. But he talked about the fact that once
he's comfortable, he can be very loud. I'm not sure
that that's totally surprising to a lot of people, but look,
there's a real opportunity for him here at safety because
you've got Antoine Winfield junior, maybe Tyke Smith the other
starting safety. But they didn't resign Jordan Whitehead Mike Edwards.
That's another position of depth that they've been concerned with.
(38:51):
And by the way, he has been on the phone
with his brother a lot. He says, his brother caught
him all the time. He says he misses his brotherly
love there. So he said, schadore him. Are on the
same schedule, he says, he calls them every day six am.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
The Buccaneers do not play the Browns in the twenty
twenty five seasons. Say, if you have a vision of
Sanders picking off Sanders, perhaps that'll be down the road
if those guys are still with that with those teams
and playing by the time those two teams.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Beat, we shall see.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
Charah Walsh, thank you very much for your insight there
on the Buccaneers always appreciate you providing that.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
Coming up, we're gonna talk about the Jets.
Speaker 5 (39:24):
Feel like since Aaron Rodgers left, we just haven't talked
about the Jets and up so Jets fans stay tuned
talking about Armond Memboo and more.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Coming up next to the instters.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
The Jets wrapped up their rookie mini camp in slow motion. No,
just this video is in slow motion, the rest of
it in real time. First time on the grass with
Aaron Glenn as their head coach, and the first look
the number seven overall pick armand Membo with they certainly
being a big part of that offensive line literally and
figuratively four years to come. Welcome back to the Insiders,
(40:05):
Tom Pilla Sero, joined once again by Steve White. Steve,
what does the drafting of MEMBOO say to you about
what they want this team to look like?
Speaker 2 (40:14):
With Aaron Glennis the head coach, Well, I think.
Speaker 12 (40:16):
About Aaron Glenney comes from the Detroit Lions, right the
head coach that was Dan Campbell, who was Dan Campbell's
first draft pick with Detroit.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Oh Penney Sewell, a right tackle.
Speaker 12 (40:26):
Where was he drafted number seven overall, the same as
armand Membo. So this tells me that Aaron Glenn, who
is a tough Bill Parcells disciple, is trying to build
his team much like they did in Detroit through the trenches.
Now they've already got some good players on that offensive front.
Now you've got Membu, a right tackle, a very physical
but athletic player also to become a building block. Now,
(40:50):
with Justin Fields is the quarterback and ty Taylor as
his backup, you're also looking at an athletic right tackle
who can block in the RPO game and the moving
pocket pass game. So that's another reason why that happened. Now,
remember people said, oh, Tyler Warren, the tight end that
of Penn State could be their guy. Well they went
on got Mason Taylor, Jason Taylor's son, as a tight
(41:11):
end in the second round. Those two young players can
grow together, become kind of a tandem from time to time,
but again in the trenches up front. That's what it
tells me about the type of front and team and
Glenn is trying to build.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Travis Hunter already as popular as any NFL rookie, particularly
if you're the lady who happens to be sitting next
to him on a plane. Look at the big smiles
there from Travis Hunter and Sandy Hawkins Combs, the posted
the photo of the two of them together, said that
Hunter could not have been nicer. Sandy Hawkins Combs said
to be a guest on Good Morning Football Tomorrow morning,
(41:48):
Our David Carr playing golf with his brother and told
his name is Derek, and until about seventy two hours ago,
he was an NFL player with the New Orleans Saints.
Derek dealing with that degenerative shoulder condition, can't throw football
correctly right now. But Ken blasted down the fairway is
gonna have a lot more time to work on his game,
(42:08):
which brings us to an important question.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Mike Garifolo, you.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Were bragging to me Idian Rapport in our group text
this morning about how good your swing is looking right now.
Of the three of us, who would have the best
chance to beat the car brothers.
Speaker 5 (42:23):
Ian, I mean he doesn't do anything spectacular.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
Discourse, All right, great show everyone. Oh sorry, I think hitting.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
I'm in form I'm hitting them nicely right on the
screws shirt.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
See tomorrow.
