Speaker 1 (00:10):
It was just a few years ago the Baker Mayfield
was on four teams in a nine month span.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
That was pretty weird.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Now, is there any quarterback that scares you more? With
the game on the line. Brian Baldinger Mark Rousse will
be here tonight to talk about another Bucks comeback win.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
The Chargers also were victorious Monday.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Night and now they sit alone atop the AFC West.
We will break down their domination of the Raiders, whose
visitor in the coaches booth was more memorable, frankly than
anything they did on the field. Week two is a
rough one for injuries across the NFL, including some that
might also have upended your fantasy team. The good news,
(00:51):
Michael and Floria will be here tonight to tell you
exactly who to snag off the waiver wire. Welcome inside
with the Insiders present and by Progressive Insurance, alongside Judy
Batista and Mike Garafolo, I am todm Mellisero. Week two
is now in the books for a lot of people
across the league. They are certainly ready to move on,
(01:13):
especially some of those quarterbacks who are not going to
be out there in Week three and potentially beyond. That
is where we begin tonight in Cincinnati, where the Bengals
officially have placed Joe Burrow on injured reserve. That was
a mere formality after Burrow, right on this play suffered
a severe Grade three turf toe injury that will require surgery.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
He is expected to.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Miss at least three months. They are rolling with Jake
Browning starting Sunday against Minnesota. Added a couple of quarterbacks today,
including veteran Mike White, to the practice squad.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
On Sunday, Jake Browning.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Going up against the Vikings, who also are going to
be playing a backup quarterback, jaj McCarthy, considered week to
week with a high ankle spring. The expectations Carson Wentz
will get the start question now is for how long,
because a couple of international games await the Vikings next
before thereby. Jane daniels status is up in the Air
Force Sunday against the Raiders due to a knee injury
(02:11):
that he suffered on Thursday night against the Packers. Officially,
according to Dan Quinn, he is day today, but we
will see what, if anything Daniel's able to do on
the field when they get back to practice starting on Wednesday, Meanwhile,
for Justin Fields, he is in the concussion proto call
after suffering the injury during that ugly loss to the Bills.
Of course, there are several steps you have to go
(02:33):
through to clear that proto call. Time will tell over
the next several days whether Fields has an opportunity to
be on the field this week against the Bucks. If
he is not, then he would be Tyrod Taylor getting
these start instead. There's a lot to take in right there, Mike,
but let's start out with the one that's maybe the
most unknown at this point. You and Ian Rappaport first
(02:54):
reported this Jade Daniels dealing with this knee injury. Where
exactly do we stand now five days from kickoff of
their next game?
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yes, and I'm gonna echo what Ian has since said
and since reported, which is that he wouldn't be surprised
if Jaden Daniels misses a game here, because you're talking
about a young, sensational quarterback.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
And movement is a part of what he does.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Could you potentially put him in a situation where he's
not moving as well as can be and basically sets
himself up to take another hit like this or another
hit to another part of the body there. Nobody's rolling
him out right, Nobody is saying for sure he is
not going to play against the Raiders, But it seems
to be a lot of folks speaking about the possibility
(03:37):
of airing towards the side of caution when it comes
to Jaden Daniels, which would mean Marcus Mariota, a guy
that you feel good about, a veteran presence, could step
in for a game here, Marcus Mariota revenge game, ibout
Mariota and Carson Wentz all of a sudden, potentially starting
games in the same week here. But I would say
when the Commander's return to practice, if Jaden Daniels is
not practicing or at least not practicing fully, would not
(03:59):
be surprised to see that at all. So we'll see
as the week goes on. As of now, I'm with
you and kind of leaning towards the no side.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
It turns out if you're on enough NFL teams, eventually
almost any game can become a revenge game, including for
Jake Browning, the former Viking who was on their practice
squad for quite some time at the start of his career.
Judy we obviously had thought through and talked about all
the various scenarios here, but based on the roster maneuvering today,
it's pretty clear they believe that Jake Browning is going
to be able to keep this thing on the tracks
(04:29):
until Joe Burrow can return.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
It's been pretty clear how much confidence and comfort level
they have in Jake Browning all along. They made no
move to try to trade for one of the big
names that you kept hearing people in the last forty
eight hours speculate about Jameis Winston, Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
No, Jake Browning. He has been Joe Burrow's backup.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
This is his third season as Joe Burrow's backup and
two seasons ago when Burrow had the wrist injury. Browning
started seven games for the Bengals. They went four and three,
completed seventy percent of his passes that year through twelve
touchdown passes, so they backfilled. They brought Brett Rippon up
from the practice squad. They signed Mike wyd and Sean
(05:12):
Clifford to the practice squad, so they've got the depth
behind Jake Browning. But they are going forward with Jake Browning,
who knows the offense, knows the coaches knows the personnel
in the locker room. Everybody is comfortable with each other
that they feel is the best way to keep this
on the tracks, so that if there is any chance
(05:33):
that Joe Burrow can return, they will have given Joe
Burrow a reason to return late this season.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Brett Rippon, also a former Viking, was with them throughout
the course training camp. We got revenge games galore here
and possibly now would be the number two quarterback this
week if the Vikings hadn't moved on from him. Here's
where we stand on JJ McCarthy. He has that high
ankle sprain. This is very much a week to week
see how he responds to treatment.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Situation.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Application comes in part from the fact that they've got
an international trip. They go to Doublin to face the Steelers,
then to London to face the Browns.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
There's not a lot of concern.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
It does sound like about the injury swelling or having
those types of effects, but it is a real situation where,
just from a rehab modality standpoint, all the different things
JJ McCarthy has to do, it might be better if
he's not getting close to playing, if they keep him
home so Carson Wentz is the quarterback for now. They
signed Desmond Ridder today. Why Desmond Ridder at this stage,
(06:30):
We'll think of it this way. The only other quarterback
on the roster Max Brozmer, who's an undrafted rookie. By
signing Ridder to the active roster, not the practice squad now,
they potentially could designate Ridder the number two quarterback. Then
if something were to happen to Carson Wentz, it's Ridder,
who at least has started games for both the Falcons
and to start last season for the Raiders, who would
be stepping in and not a guy who's never played
(06:50):
an NFL snap. One additional challenge, by the way, that
they have to deal with as well, running back Aaron Jones,
their starter at the position, headed to injured reserve. He
is out at least the next four games, it potentially
can stretch even beyond that. That is a pretty significant
hamstring injury for Aaron Jones. We've seen Jordan Mason get
(07:11):
a lot of the work through the course of the
first couple of games here. They also brought back old
friend Cam Akers. Didn't have to trade for him. They
did that the last two years. This time he was available,
signed to the practice squad, So those are Sundays games
coming up this week. Let's rewind, though, to how Week
two wrapped up on Monday night. We had a good
one between the Bucks and the Texans. Tampa started two
(07:34):
to zero in four consecutive seasons. Spoiler alert, they made
it five. Let's start out here late in the fourth quarter,
two sixteen to go, Nick Chubb firsting through the line.
That's good to see. Nick Chubb has been through a lot.
Twenty five yard touchdown right there. They fail in the
two point conversion, though it stays nineteen to fourteen, insuing
Bucks drive one twenty four left. Baker Mayfield can't find anyone.
(07:55):
We saw him do this over and over again. You
want to play man coverage against me, I'm gonna use
my leg. I'm gonna take all kinds of hits. I
was told he didn't have to do any scans on
Baker Mayfield. That's the good news. But he's probably pretty sore.
We'll see if he missed some practice time this week.
Six plays later, it's Rashad White going into the end zone.
Bocks pull off a comeback for a second consecutive week.
(08:15):
They win twenty to nineteen. It was not without a
cost for Tampa. Their stand up defensive tackle Elijah Cansey,
tore his peck last night in the game. As Mike
reported earlier today, he will need surgery. His season is
now over. A silou waiting for their tests on right
tackle Luke Goodecki sorry without Tristan Wurtz. Kadecki also could
(08:37):
miss a little bit of time here as we bring
in our Brian Baldinger and Mark Ross to the conversation. Baldy,
we've seen this happen before. We've seen this book. When
you put the ball in Baker Mayfield's hands at the end,
he seems to have a knock to deliver in those moments.
What did you see last night in that game winning drift.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Well, this is two weeks in ronow Tom.
Speaker 7 (08:56):
You know he did it the week before against the
Atlanta Falcons and through the game when he touchdown pass
to the rookie Ebica Buca last.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Night, they get the ball with two oh four.
Speaker 7 (09:05):
Every team practices a two minute drill, I mean every
single week, every team practiced it.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
But Baker excelled.
Speaker 7 (09:12):
I mean this run right here, this is fourth and ten,
Like he doesn't make that the game is over. He
converts that fourth and ten, like he finds his back
right here, you know, out of the backfield right now.
He makes a great play, you know, he just takes
him down the field. But you hit Mike Evans right
in the middle of the field. You get down to
the seven yard line and you handlef to Rashaan White,
(09:32):
but you know you're playing with a backup right tackle.
And Charlie Heck all right, he talked about Gidecki. You know,
they had to juggle their offensive line two weeks ring
The starting center Graham Barton is playing left tackle, the
starting left guard Ben Breederson is playing center, you know,
but none of that matters when the quarterback executes the
(09:52):
way Baker has two weeks in a row. He's very,
very calm. He sees the whole field. In fact, he
talked about it last night. He saw the blitz on
fourth and tent and he eluded it. He kind of
anticipated it, made one guy miss it, and he was
into the open field. So he's seen the field. He
knows where his guys are. He trust the offense and
he trust the guys around him. And he's an excellent
(10:15):
point guard taking him down the field eighty yards, eleven
plays and they score nine seconds ago.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Mark on the other side of this thing, the Texans offense,
it's been a bumpy couple of weeks. It's been a
bumpy couple of years.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
You think back the last season, they did have various
injuries to the skill spots into the offensive line, but
a lot of the focuses on Bobby Slow at the
offensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
They move on from him, they hire Nick Kyley.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
It doesn't look in the early going a whole lot
different than a Dinny Yeargo what exactly do you see
going on for Houston's offense.
Speaker 8 (10:46):
Well, Tom, I was down there in Texan for inside
training camp, and the day I went to practice, it
was one of the worst offensive practices I had seen
by the Texans offense.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
But everybody said, it's a fresh tank.
Speaker 9 (10:59):
We're going to be We've got a new offensive coordinator,
we got a new offensive line.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
CJ.
Speaker 8 (11:03):
Stroud is gonna be rejuvenated. But after the first two weeks,
as you mentioned, it looks like the same old Texans
offense that we saw last.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Season, and maybe even worse.
Speaker 8 (11:13):
And it's a combination of yes, a new offensive coordinator
may not know how to call those plays efficiently. All
these new bodies on the offensive line may not be
able to hold up, which they have not been able
to do the first couple of weeks. Joe Mixon is
not there, who is an integral part of the offense.
I think that's an underrated proposition there where you can't
(11:36):
put Nick Chubb in there. Joe Mixon is one of
the best running backs in the NFL. And then CJ.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Stroud just does not look right.
Speaker 8 (11:44):
You saw last night despite the offensive line struggles plenty
of times for CJ. Stroud, and he just missed wide
open receivers. Thirteen of twenty four is just not going
to get it done in this league.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Tom two and zero. But they suffered a significant injury
on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
It was to coach Sean McVay.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
That's right, McVay, one on one against his own body
on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Let's just hear more about it from himself. God's good.
Speaker 10 (12:16):
You know, I did tear my planner fascist so no, yeah,
well that's a good thing because now I guess it
allows you to heal a little bit faster. But you know,
I was being dramatic limping around towards the end of
the game. But you know the the MRI I confirmed
I did that. But good news is I'm not playing,
so I'm just on the sidelines watching. So if I
have a little cool limp to add some swag, then
(12:36):
you'll know why.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
That's actually a relief.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
But it tears that actually relieves any pain that he
might have been feeling.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
No pain here.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
He rams up to number seven in the official power
rankings according to NFL dot Com, Eagles Bill's Ravens holding
steady at the top of that list. As welcome in
our Jeffrey Chedia and bring back Ross for.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
A little game. We're gonna call panic or patience.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
I will say a team, guys, and you tell me
if you are in panic mode or still being patient
with them. Jeffery, let's start out right in your backyard,
Kansas City. Are we in panic or patience mode with
the three time defending AFC champion Chiefs.
Speaker 11 (13:19):
There's panicking going on around here, Tom, But I am
preaching patience with the Chiefs right now. They don't have
her sheet Rice, they don't have xavior Worthy. The defense
played pretty good in that game against Philadelphia compared to
how they played in the Week one loss of the Chargers,
so that was an uplifting moment. Look, they have to
get better place when Travis Kelsey saw make the big
bobble here that live to the interception. They have to
(13:41):
get a run game because Pat Mahomes can't be your
leading rusher all season long. But I am hopeful this
team can figure it out because Mark they found ways
to figure it out in the past.
Speaker 8 (13:51):
Jeffery is when you love someone, when you're family with somebody,
you give it a lot more love than what you should.
And you being in Kansas City, this is panic.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Time Kansas City.
Speaker 8 (14:01):
Yeah, they may get a little bit better and win
some games, but this is panic time because this is
not a super Bowl caliber roster right now in Kansas City.
And as we've seen, Patrick Mahomes and Andrew Reed just
cannot save everything that's going on. Whether she writes and
xavery Worthy come back for the season, they just don't
have enough playmakers and blocking for Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
So if we're talking.
Speaker 8 (14:25):
About patients to win a couple of games and get nine,
ten eleven wins, yes, but super Bowl contenders, this is
panic time in Kansas City.
Speaker 12 (14:34):
Jeff come on, wow, she writes, return week seven, The
question is what will their record be by the time
they get their top wide receiver back in the fold.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
The Bears also up a bit of a bumpy start here,
Jeffrey panic or patience right now in Chicago.
Speaker 11 (14:51):
Well, I am panicking here and if Mark's gonna get
be any indication this is going to be a full
sale like explosion in choc Chago when he talks about
this team, because they look horrible right now. I thought
Ben Johnson would come in here instead of New Culture.
Yet Kayleb Williams going, I'm still hopeful that can happen.
But their defense, touch offense all all season, their defense
is horrible.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Seventy nine points in the first two games.
Speaker 11 (15:12):
They got Dallas coming up, Washington the Ravens before week eight.
Speaker 13 (15:16):
I don't see how this gets better in a very
difficult NFC Northmark.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, this is one. I got you right here, one
hundred percent. This is panic time.
Speaker 8 (15:23):
And there were super concerns about Caleb Williams in training
camp and whether he could fully grasp everything that was
going on with the offense and the checks and the
calls and the adjustments, and it seems as if the
first two games he cannot do that, even despite all
of the weapons that they brought in there and Ben
Johnson and as you mentioned, Jeffrey, this defense can't stop anybody.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
So yes, full panding, you got this one right, my man.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Okay, we're about forty eight hours out from the Dolphins
trying to avoid an zero to three start, and Jeffrey,
this was where the schedule was supposed to get hard.
The Colts of the Patriots, those are the winnable games.
You'd hope they start fast instead awful in week one,
better but still not good enough in week two.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Panic her patience in Miami.
Speaker 11 (16:07):
Full scale panic here because you can't go into Week
three with a must win game be facing the Buffalo Bills.
I don't know whether this good's better for the Dolphins,
and I know Mike McDaniel, their head coach, was on
a hot seat coming in Scott even hotter now because
his calling car was the offense.
Speaker 13 (16:22):
The shine is.
Speaker 11 (16:22):
Off that I think going back to last year, I
think they still haven't recovered from Tyreek Hill Quinton on them,
and so I don't know where this team is going
to find a new identity with Mark they got to find.
Speaker 13 (16:33):
One fast, and I don't see it coming.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Yeah, you got this one.
Speaker 8 (16:36):
If there was another word more severe than panic, that
would be the Dolphins, because I mean they didn't even
show up in week one.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Week two, at least.
Speaker 8 (16:44):
They showed some fight and some signs of life on offense.
Defense is not there, but I can't see discontinuing where
they'll ascend and get better, and this is no way
to do it against Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
As you mentioned.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
One week ago, we were talking about the Jets and
how competitive they were in week one. The fact they're
in this segment, I would tell you week two did
not go as well.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Panicker patients in New York.
Speaker 11 (17:07):
Jeffrey, Well, I'm panicking because I thought Aaron Glenn was
gonna come in there. And again, like Ben Johnson, stead
of culture, they want to be a defensive first team
and play with efficient quarter to have an efficient quarterback
play got justin fields banged up. Now that defense is
given up a ton of points.
Speaker 13 (17:21):
And look, you're.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
Playing the AFC in the AFC East.
Speaker 11 (17:24):
If you start out slow like this team has started out,
not allowed to look forward to.
Speaker 13 (17:28):
So I just don't know. Defense got to get better
over there. Mark fast.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Yeah, without a doubt.
Speaker 8 (17:33):
But I look at this as patients because I only
had this Jets team with four wins before the season
coming in, so it wasn't as if I had high
expectations to say, hey, this is going to play be
a playoff caliber team.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
So I'm saying give it patients.
Speaker 8 (17:46):
With Aaron Glenn coming in the former player, we know
what he did in Detroit and to say this is
a long term plan for him in a new GM
as well, justin field should flashes game one, but unfortunately
got hurt game two before or he was struggling before
he got hurt. So this is patience because the expectations
for me were not that high anyway this year. Mark,
(18:10):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
You can read more from jeffreynfl dot com slash first
read right now, Judy Matision take it away.
Speaker 6 (18:18):
Well, speaking of the Miami Dolphins and speaking of what
you guys were just talking about, this might not be
the opponent the Miami Dolphins are looking for at this
particular moment. Dolphins at Buffalo Thursday night, Prime video, Dolphins
trying to get their first win of the season. This
is going to be a tough one. Here is our
Camwolf and he is going to be at this game.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
Cam.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
Let's start though, by talking about Josh Allen and his nose,
which you could see in the press conference today.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
He's got a big bruise right here.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
All the blood.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
We saw it on Sunday. Of course, he said, as
long as I can breathe, I'm good. What do we
take away from.
Speaker 14 (18:56):
That, Well, first of all, the Bill's locker room is
taking away a bunch of jokes. I talked to their linebacker,
Torrelle Bernard today and he said, the jokes are flying
about the nose.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
You know.
Speaker 14 (19:08):
We make some reference about it being a little bloody,
you know, the eyes a little bruised up. There's a
running joke that he kind of looks like one of
the bos Of brothers now and so Josh Allen took
that with stride, said, I'm the third brother Boza brother.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Now with the nose.
Speaker 14 (19:22):
He will wear a clear visor on Thursday as the plan,
he warred him practice today.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
That's to protect that nose.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Look.
Speaker 14 (19:29):
He said, it won't affect his vision. He said, he's
still working through it. It gets hot in there. It's
something that he has to work with the communication because
it echoes. But it isn't something that should affect him
long term. Doesn't seem like it's more than a bruise there,
but really has sold the toughness of Josh Allen. You know,
guys in the locker room see their quarterback stuffing, galls
up his nose running back out there on the field,
(19:51):
it gives them an extra boost. Bnard told me he
is the standard of our team and when he does
stuff like that, it shows us just how much fight
we need to have.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
And look, this Bill's teams super Bowl contender.
Speaker 14 (20:01):
They're two to zero and they're playing a team at
home Thursday night that they have dominated. Allen is thirteen
and two against the Dolphins. They have not lost in
Buffalo to the Dolphins is twenty sixteen. Everything is right
for them to put on another showcase game. A couple
of injury notes to note for them, sounds like no
Ed Oliver or Matt Mullana on Thursday, but they will
(20:21):
get t Ron Johnson back for that defense.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
All right, let's talk about the Miami Dolphins, who are
not just O and to, but oh and two in
kind of an ugly way. Certainly, the heat which was
already on coach Mike McDaniel is getting turned.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Up with each game.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
How are they blocking out the noise?
Speaker 3 (20:40):
Are they blocking out the noise? Cam?
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (20:44):
I was at the Dolphins facility today and Jalen Waddle said, look,
we hear it, but we treated as rat poison, the
old saying he had from Nick Saban and Alabama. Look,
it's been loud in that building for the last couple
of weeks. They had a players only meeting last week.
This week, right before their game, fans flew a banner
over the stadium with the plane saying fire, Greer, fire, McDaniel.
(21:05):
I saw Mark Ross and Jeffery just say they're panicking
beyond panicking there. Look, this is a team that knows
they have to show something and show something quickly. And
I want to focus on the offense for a second
because that's been the calling card since Mike McDaniel has
been there. And I talked to Tua and McDaniel today
asking them what has changed, and what was interesting is
(21:26):
they said teams have really focused on clogging the middle
of the field at a different level. They've allowed us to,
as said, to have outside releases and we haven't been
able to get the ball down the field. And so
those explosives that they had their hat on, they're not
having the time because the offensive lot isn't protecting they
We're sacked five times. They have some young guys, so
the communication with emotion and timing hasn't been up to
(21:48):
sync as it has previously.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
But if you're looking.
Speaker 14 (21:51):
At this game and saying, how can the Dolphins make
this shake? What can they do? Look at their run
game in particular, divine chan the Bills are lasting the
NFL and rushing yards poor game or per carry aloud
devon han and the short passing game. In the run
game with a build team that loves to play split safeties,
that's the route. But the Dolphins know, even with a
(22:12):
tough opponent, they've got to show something very soon or
this loud noise is going to become deafening.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
That it's time for the Miami Dolphins to show some life.
Camp Wolf, thank you very much. When we return. Did
you stay up really really late last night for the
late Monday night football game. If you did, you saw
a whole lot of very good Chargers defense, including in
front of the show day on Henley, all these coming
back to break it all down on the Insiders, presented
(22:40):
by Progressive.
Speaker 15 (22:41):
Insurance, Number six overall pick yse State Roco lined up
behind Smith expects to be busy tonight. They thank it
to him.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
It's good those on this picked up on a cam.
It's into the hand.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
Tayl with Henley.
Speaker 15 (23:03):
Bowers is to the left of the formation, tucked in
the slot. Chargers don't bring pressure if Smith has time,
but he's running out of it.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Kenny sucks.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
Dayon Henley. If you don't watch the Insiders, you might
not know. He's one of the most interesting men in
the NFL. Was on the Injured fort yesterday with an illness,
played anyway, and then went on x after to say
flu games are overrated. Two and zero, I'm now for
good coverage presented by Progressive Insurances. We welcome back Brian
Ballinger with me, Tom Pelicero, Baldy. Jim Arba is prone
(23:43):
to hyper believe when he's talking about Derwin James might
be the greatest safety he's ever seen. He's talking about
Jesse Minter's flawless game. But it really was impressive. What
did you see when you broke down this tape?
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Well?
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Has has Jim adopted Derwin James? As I mean, because
there is a massive love affair there no Listen Jesse
Minner from the game's first play when the Ranger intercepted
a pass from Geno Smith right there.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
This is an unbelievable stat, Tom.
Speaker 7 (24:13):
Last night, the Chargers defensed fifteen passes, including this one
right here, Tony Jefferson there in the end zone. He
kept the Raiders out of the end zone, kept them
the three field goals. But they're in the passing lanes.
Tar Heeb still Derwin James, Tony Jefferson, the Ranger Dante
Jackson has played really well at corner.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
They've gotten good pressure.
Speaker 7 (24:35):
Even when Khalil Mack went out, they still got good
pressure on Geno Smith. And so it's a little bit
of everything. But you're watching their ability right here, Tony Jefferson.
I never know if Tony's on the team, off the team,
on the practice squad in the league, like you have
to check it week to week with him. But he
played great last night. That'stwin break went up in the
(24:56):
end zone right there. And then the other thing is
every team charts explosive plays.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Tom.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
They held the Raiders to one explosive play last night.
Of course, brock Bauers, the best receiver, was really hobbled
with that bulky brace.
Speaker 13 (25:10):
On his knee.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
But it was a complete defensive effort from Jesse Minterer
and his crew. But really it was the worst game
Gino Smith has played since he was a starter with
the New York Jets another century ago. And so that
was an unbelievable performance by the entire defense.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
And that performance by Gino Smith just so happened to
come on a night that the greatest quarterback maybe in
NFL history, was in the booth wearing a headset. You
saw our old friend Peter Schrager in the background in
one of those shots. He brought the story from the
sideline last night about Tom Brady talking with Chip Kelly,
saying that they speak two to three times a week
during the game planning process.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Pete Carroll, your thoughts.
Speaker 16 (25:57):
Yeah, I think Tom's really tried to enter that really
strictly and uh, with all respect, you know, to the
to the situation of you know, concerns like you're talking about.
And I think he's been really good. He has not
been He is not planning games with us, he's not
talking to us about anything other than our conversations that
we have that are really that are They're random, and
(26:18):
they're not they're not set up, they're not structured in
any way. And he knows, he's very respectful of what
he does otherwise, and he's of the opinion that, you know,
he doesn't want to be that kind of a factor,
and so he's not.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
The NFL clarified some things in a statement today, including this,
there are no policies the prohibited owner from sitting in
the coaches booth or wearing a headset during a game.
Brady was sitting in the booth in his capacity as
a limited partner. We bring Judy Batista and Mike Caara
Folo back into the conversation here. There's there's a lot
(26:52):
to unpack in the entirety of this situation with Paldy.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
I'll start with you.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
I've been in one production meeting in my life before
a network broadcast. You've been in a lot over the years.
What if anything would somebody glean in a production meeting
that might give them a competitive advantage if they faced
that team somewhere down the line.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
Well, I mean, you basically have freedom to ask any
coach that's in that meeting or any player in that meeting,
any question you want to glean, any insight that you want.
It could be a scheme, it could be a depth situation.
Who's going to play tackle this week with the injury.
There could be a lot of different things that you
could get. And you know, and it's held in confidence.
(27:34):
They don't want that going out there before the game starts,
and so you hold that close. But I'll say this,
I've gotten a lot out of the production meetings when
I was an announcer at Fox talking to different coaches.
Some coaches gave you more, some players gave you more.
Some basically said nothing. So it really depended on the coach.
But I'll say this about Tom. I've done both of
(27:55):
his games for National Radio this year, Washington and the
Giants week one, can in Philly last week.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
I mean, I've watched him in Arrowhead last week.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
He's on the fifty yard line with Aaron Andrews and
you know, play by play Kevin Burkhard and Tom andall.
He didn't stand there and the whole world comes to him.
It's like an open production meeting. There's Howie Roseman, here's
the coaches, players coming up. I mean Tom stands there.
He's doesn't have to go looking for somebody to talk to.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
They all want to talk to to go.
Speaker 7 (28:23):
And so if he wants to learn something about the
Eagles and Howie Roseman comes up to him, I mean
he's probably gonna ask him. And I don't know what
how he's gonna say, but I mean that's what he's
done two weeks in a row. Now, I mean Adam
Peters in Washington, they must have talked to him for
an hour down on the field before the game. And
I mean it's right up and took kickoff. Tom is
down there, so I'm sure he's getting information and he
(28:45):
only he would actually know how to, you know, just
weave it throughout the broadcast.
Speaker 6 (28:52):
Look, the issue here is that Tom Brady is more
involved than any minority owner in the history of minority owners,
which everybody should have known he was going to be,
because I can remember the owner's meeting when he was
approved as a minority owner, Mark Davis telling US reporters
how much he wanted Tom Brady to be involved in.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
All facets of the football operation.
Speaker 6 (29:15):
He wanted him involved in draft planning, he wanted him
involved in identifying the next quarterback. We know that he
was involved in selecting the next general manager, so everybody
went into this with eyes wide open. There were at
that time owners who were concerned about Brady having access
to extra information from production meetings. Some teams were more
(29:36):
concerned than others. The league initially put some guardrails in
place that he could not be involved in production meetings
at all. They scaled those guardrails back this year. He's
allowed to be involved in production meetings by zoom. But
as Baldy said, Tom Brady can talk to anybody he wants,
and the League has basically said with that statement that
they put out, basically, while he's allowed to be in
(29:56):
there as an owner, well, of course he is as
an owner, that's not the issue. The league has basically
dropped it in teams laps, saying We're not going to
put any restrictions on him. It's up to you to
decide what you tell Tom Brady. And that is the
crux of the issue. He can talk to Howie Roseman
as much as he wants. The question is, is Howie
Roseman telling him anything that he would want the Raiders
(30:18):
to know?
Speaker 3 (30:19):
And that is now the team's problem.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
Judy it's good for the NFL to Tom Brady, that
Tom Brady is involved in broadcasting.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
It's good for the.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
NFL that Tom Brady is involved with a franchise.
Speaker 4 (30:30):
It's good that a player that was so good as
a player is now involved with the league in his
post playing career.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
That is a good thing.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
That is why the league is saying, oh, ordinarily previously, yes,
maybe this is something that wouldn't have been allowed. We're
gonna be good with this as long as the teams
understand what the rules are. And by the way, to
be crystal clear, because I had somebody ask me this.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Oh I saw they announced today. They didn't announce anything today.
The rules were already in place.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
They were just asked about it by the likes of
Tom Pellisero, who was working on news this morning and said, hey,
after last night, got any comment, Yes, we do. Here's
a comment. We set these rules up previously. Everybody knows
what they are. He's allowed to do the production meetings
via zoom, just not be inside the building. I just
the part that makes me laugh, and I was chuckling
hard with Pete Carroll. Sound he's involved. We know he's involved.
(31:14):
Stop the charade. That you're just having random conversations. Peter
Schrager knows what he's talking about when he put that
out on the broadcast last night on the record from
Chip Kelly. Yes, they're having football conversations, and yeah, that's okay.
It's not like he's a minority owner who made somebody
in the dot com world walks in and goes.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Hey, let's draft that guy on the board up there.
He's Tom Brady. That's okay. And by the way, all the.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Controversy of how Tom Brady is using information for production meetings,
Schrager gets that quote.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
From Chip Kelly in a production meeting. Ill hope the
world just collides at this moment. It's unbelievable. Fauldy, thank
you as always for your insight.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
We got a lot more to come here on The Insiders,
including they look at the fantasy side of some of
those injuries we saw in week two. If you lost
your quarterback, who do you grab on the waiver wire?
Who can keep the train running? Michael left Florio's got
answers for you. Right after this on The Insiders presented
by Progressive Insurance, it.
Speaker 5 (32:20):
Is time for your weekly waiver wire targets. I have
first priority in my league. I am basically the Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
I suck right now. Not saying the Titans suck, I'm
just saying they're first in the waiver wire. I suck,
to be clear.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
So any name that you name here I could get.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
Because I've got that priority. So let's start at the
quarterback position. Who am I picking up?
Speaker 17 (32:41):
You're not picking this guy up, but I know a
lot of people are in need of quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
You're not. You're good on your team.
Speaker 17 (32:47):
But Daniel Jones, I think has finally reached a point
where we need to pick him up in fantasy. Look,
we all expected Josh Allen to be used here the
goal one, right, but Daniel Jones and Josh Allen right
now are.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Tied for the lead league lead in goal line carries.
Speaker 17 (33:02):
Jones also has scored the second most Fantasy points amongst
quarterbacks and has the second most passing yards. Speaking of
the Titans, he gets them this week. They do not
generate a ton of pressure. I think he is in
play if you need a QB replacement, and a lot
of people do this week. So yeah, look, maybe it's
Saints like from last season, but the upside has been
so good through two weeks that I think you need
(33:24):
to take notice of what Daniel Jones is doing.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Yeah, I'm actually picking up the quarterback on the other
side of that matchup we just saw.
Speaker 5 (33:29):
I'm picking up Bonex. I wanted to draft them. Somebody
dropped them.
Speaker 4 (33:32):
I don't know why I'm getting and I can announce
that because nobody can do anything about it because I've
got no I'm number one again.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
Not a great thing running back position. Who's out there,
fai Jal Twoton.
Speaker 17 (33:43):
It's not a huge week at running back off the waivers,
but in twenty six percent of the snaps turned that
into seventy four yards a touchdown in over.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Fifteen fantasy points.
Speaker 17 (33:52):
And if you watched him play, you saw that he
is a shifty, explosive runner like you just saw there,
he can be used in the passing game. I do
think it is possible that in his Liam Cohen system
he could carve out a large enough role where he
has standalone value, especially when the buys hit and injuries
start piling up. But if Travis Etn was to miss
(34:12):
any time, Tooton is an RB two.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
With more up signed.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
I am like the Titans. I am also like the Chiefs.
I've got Rashid Rice. I just got to get to
the point where he can get back and help my lineup.
In the meantime, I need help with the receiver position,
and I am about to claim again doesn't matter, nobody
can do anything about it.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
This guy you're about to talk.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
About, I like Wandall Robinson a lot. I scooped him
up in a couple of leagues last week after he
had eight targets.
Speaker 17 (34:36):
Well, he had even more targets this week, ten targets,
one hundred and forty two yards, a touchdown, and twenty
eight fantasy points.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
At least eight targets in each game.
Speaker 17 (34:44):
And what, I don't think people realize he's being used
differently this year. He leads the NFL in yards on
deep passes and from the slot. The Chiefs they struggle
against slot receivers this year. So I think Wandall Robinson
is someone he could grab off the waiver wire and
just get to your starting lineup in Week three.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
Yeah, now, look, I need help at the receiver position
from multiple people, so you can give me even more
names that I could potentially go after. I thought about
de Andre Hopkins because the numbers look good, but didn't
really get a lot of action, a lot of targets.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
So gonna go away for him. So give me somebody florio.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
In that Bo Knicks, you compare him with Boknicks.
Speaker 17 (35:21):
Give me Troy Franklin, who last week led the Broncos
in snaps, routes, targets, catch his yards, and he scored
a touchdown. He leads most of those categories on the
season now for the Broncos as well. I liked that
they were using him in the slot of bit, they
were using him out wide, he was running downfield. It
was a lot of grown man routes for Troy Franklin.
And we can't overlook that he played in college with
(35:43):
bo Knicks. There's a clear chemistry there and I'm a
big believer in that. We're seeing that with like Herbert
and Keenan Allen in LA. So I think this could
be a breakout happening before our eyes.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
I'm willing to pay up a little bit.
Speaker 17 (35:55):
In fact, in one league where I need wide receivers,
I spent twenty five percent of my fab And if
you missed out on those players, there are other options
you could go grab here.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Some names. I think there's a lot of good tight
ends this week.
Speaker 17 (36:06):
There's some good wide receivers, and everyone is looking for
quarterbacks this week.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
Everyone is looking for quarterbacks, including me, hopefully Bo Bos.
Speaker 13 (36:17):
Hopefully Bo.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
You're a believer now here in that position for me.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
I am. I was a believer.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
He just went a little bit earlier than I thought.
But that's okay. Second draft got him.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
Michael left Florio is there for your first draft, your
second draft, your third graft. He's here throughout the entire
season for all of your fantasy needs. Josh Allen and
Tuat Tongue. I low about the square off on Thursday
Night Football. Are Sam Schwarztein or, as I like to
call him, Papa kick return.
Speaker 5 (36:40):
I'm about to join us on the insiders.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Ringer gets it away another good boot, driving Washington back
to his twenty seven yard line.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
He bobbles it for a second, still going as he
spins forward.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Trying to get to the outside, gets by the pudder
down the side.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
Line the lake, Washington to the house.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
Touchdown, Baby Patterson to Gibson, who gets a running start
on that catch.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Gipson across the thirty Antonio.
Speaker 16 (37:16):
Gibson still going, can you return the favor down this sideline?
Speaker 3 (37:21):
You gotta be kidding me. Back to back, I'm ninety
yard touchdown.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Year two of the dynamic kickoff, and seems like everybody
is now a fan, almost everybody, none bigger than our guy,
Sam Schwarztein, Prime video on Thursday Night's Football's analytics expert.
Who is a very very special connection to this play?
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Sam?
Speaker 1 (37:47):
The numbers are off the charts. We've never seen kickos
return at a higher rate. Some big plays happening here.
How does that make you feel? It's pretty exciting to see.
Speaker 9 (37:57):
My wife's probably tired of hearing me say get to
the edge, get to the edge, gets to the edge,
and seeing Antonio Gibson go to the house for my
little baby. So it's been great.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
You were one of the founders of that play, bringing
it to of course other leagues, and now the NFL
adopting it here. This was always the play in year one.
Don't have a high rate of returns, examine the injury
right now. Year two, you change where the touchback comes
out to an all of a sudden boom. We got
a bunch of big plays We're going to see, hopefully
some big plays, big returns. On Thursday night, we've got
a match between the Bills and the Dolphins. Let's dive
(38:28):
deep on that Josh Allen once again. I'll tell you
came right back out an NFL MVP four.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
What do you see in so far?
Speaker 9 (38:34):
Sam, There's no way to fully contain Josh Allen, especially
on extended dropbacks. Those are dropbacks of four plus seconds.
The league average success rate, meaning how much you're helping
your team chance to win, is only twenty four percent.
Josh Allen is successful sixty percent of the time, even
if you're getting a good pass rush. His ability to scramble,
(38:54):
use his legs, and keep his eyes down and feel
make him the best quarterback out of the pocket peper dropback,
which is a magnitude how much how many big plays
is he generating.
Speaker 13 (39:04):
He's second in the.
Speaker 9 (39:05):
NFL at point five to forty paper dropback.
Speaker 13 (39:09):
The average in the NFL is negative point seven. It's
a huge swing.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
He saw James Cook the other night making a bunch
of plays. That jump cut was absolutely nasty. All it
was going through my head, Sam, was that's why you
pay that guy that money regardless of position. Here what
sets him apart and how does he elevate that Bills offense.
Speaker 9 (39:29):
He's not only consistent, which is success right. He gets
explosive with EPA, But what's most important to him, he's
a first and second down back. He only has a
fifty five percent usage rate and on third down it's
a twenty one percent usage dry. They bring in Ty
Johnson to be the third down back. Now when he
is in, there's a fifty seven percent run rate, one
(39:49):
of the highest for starting running backs in the NFL.
So teams know the run is coming, they know it's
going to James Cook, and they still can't stop it.
Speaker 13 (39:57):
Teams will pack the box.
Speaker 9 (39:59):
He's still being able to make someone missed that second
level again, like you saw last week, go all the
way to that house with it. It consistency of explosiveness
make him one of the best.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
In the NFL.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
We know that the Dolphins offense can be explosive. We
have not seen a whole lot of that, Sam. We
certainly have not seen anything close to the best of Tua.
Tongue about Loa, how in your mind does he get
this thing right and avoid an zero in three start
against a really tough Bills team.
Speaker 9 (40:25):
They're at their best when Mike McDaniel's playing Madden with Tua,
all the prestat motion, everything, but they have to get
the ball out quickly. On quick passes. He's one of
the best in the NFL fifty three percent success rate
plus point zero eight ep per dropback. But when he's
throwing extended plays or anything other than quick throws, that
drops eleven percent to forty two percent success rate, and
(40:46):
then he's negative point.
Speaker 13 (40:47):
Zero four epa per dropback.
Speaker 9 (40:49):
He needs all those receivers to be looking at him
because on a lot of these throws, the pressures games
of they have a young, old line, some backups in
and if nobody's looking for him to get rid of
the ball quickly, it's a disaster for this Dolphins offense.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
You want Sam every Thursday night on TNS Prime Vision
with Next Gen Stats, Alternate Stream covers Dolphins bills on
Prime Video and NFL Plus.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
Begins at seven pm Eastern time. Sam. Thank you as always.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
Time to vote for the Pepsi zero Sugar Rookies of
the Week.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
Go to NFL dot com slash Rookies. Here's your choices.
Just go vote now.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
Happy one hundredth birthday, Martha Firestone Ford and what else
do you get a legend of the NFL on her
one hundredth birthday. How about a game ball from a
win over the Bears. That seems fairly appropriate. So I'm
Martha at training camp this year. She came out and
the cart was being greeted by everybody. Judy, she is
an absolute legend.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
In this game. She is a badass. That is what
Martha Ford is. Happy birthday, missus Ford. Well soon we're
back tomorrow, so you
