Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome inside with the Insiders alongside Judy Batista, Ian Rapaport
and Mike Garafollo. I am Tom Telaicero. We are sitting
here on the Monday after the Sunday in week eleven.
There were a ton of awesome games on Sunday. There
were some games that were not quite as awesome, or
(00:29):
at least not as competitive. I might have been at
one of those. We'll talk about all the action from
the weekend, as we usually do on the Monday podcast,
but let's start out with a team that did not
play on Sunday, because Ian, you had the story this morning.
After weeks, months, years of speculation about when the Daniel
(00:50):
Jones era might come to an end, we finally appear
to have gotten there in New York.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, I have to say that it was you know,
there was a lot building up to a lot of
conversations and a lot of sort of back and forth,
will they won't they some reports saying they wouldn't bench
Daniel Jones, some people assuming they would. You know, I
would say to be able to clear that from the
drafts was certainly a very nice moment this morning, and
a significant moment for the Giants now It's weird because
(01:17):
it's everything you don't want, Like if you are going
to sign a quarterback to a huge contract, the same
thing Rams went through with Jared Goff, who now is awesome,
but it wasn't when he played there. If you're gonna
sign your own guide to a huge contract, you want
to know for absolute sure that he is going to
be your franchise quarterback for the Giants.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
He is no longer the future.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
I mean, he had his moments, took him to the playoffs,
definitely has a good nickname, is a good guy, but
was not the future of the Giants, and so they
benched him today. I said in my initial tweet it
was a football decision, and I will stand by the
fact that it is a football decision. There are financial
components which we can discuss and should because it's important,
(02:01):
But this is a football decision because the Giants have
not won a lot of games.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
They're two and eight. They are bad.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
The actual like around the team, everything except the quarterback
has been pretty decent, weapons are pretty good, offensive line
has been better, defense has been tough, running back Young
one has been really good. The quarterback is not, and
they want to get a spark and they want to
win games. So they're going to Tommy DeVito. And that
(02:32):
is the football part of it, the money part of it.
They're saving themselves twenty three million dollars guaranteed for injury
next year in case Daniel.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Jones gets hurt.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
That is important, But to me, that is not the
most important because they have decided that Daniel Jones does
not give them the best chance to win anymore.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
And here, let's real quick here, Before Judy I get
to you, let's hear what Brian Davill had to say
today on this decision.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
So we're making a quarterback switch here from Daniel and
we're going to go with Tommy. I spoke with all
the quarterbacks this morning before a morning meeting. Let them
know with the direction that we're going. Those are never
easy conversations. Got a lot of respect for for all
three of those guys, you know, after you know, evaluating
a bunch of things and looking at a lot of
(03:15):
tape and being around Tommy last year where he created
a little bit of a spark for us. That's the
reason why we're going with Tommy. Ah Drew will be
the backup, continue to work with him. He's been nothing
but a pro and and as as was Daniel. So
it's it's never an easy, every easy conversation to have
with with the players. But felt like this was a
(03:38):
necessary move for us and look forward to working with
with Tommy and getting him ready to go against Tampa.
Obviously not playing the way any of us want to play,
and that's on all of us. But felt like this
was a decision that we needed to make here uh
and try to spark things, change things up, and you know,
we went and did it with with Tommy. Again. We
(04:01):
spent a lot of time here over the last week
of evaluating a lot of things. I just felt like
this was the best thing for us.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Judy, you've covered the Giants for a long time. You've
seen very good years there, You've seen some lean years,
and you've seen just about six years of Daniel Jones.
When you hear above the decision and also what Brian
Dabel had to say about it, give me your your
reaction and your insight.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Well, to me, the most the mediest part of this
is that they're not going with Drew Locke. They're going
with Tommy Devido, which is you know, maybe unorthodox. There's
reasons for that. You kept he kept using the word spark,
shake things up, try something to get the team going.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
The team has just been.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
I mean not even flat, I mean just nothing. As
Ian you know, pointed out like other facets of the
Giants team have been okay, and they're just not getting
anything out of the quarterback position, and so they've got
to try something to.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Give you a reason to pay attention to.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Them while they figure out how they're going to go
forward into the future. Clearly Daniel Jones will not be
part of that future because the subtext here is it's
Tommy DeVito and then.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
Drew Locke is the backup.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
So Daniel Jones is now the number three quarterback, which means,
I mean, this is where the sort of financial part.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
Of it comes into the equation is if he's.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Not going to be starting, they are certainly not going
to put him out there as a backup and run
the risk of an injury if Tommy DeVito gets hers
or can't play.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
So that's the end of Daniel Jones Number one.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
I am fascinated by the fact that like they gave
Drew lock like ever five million dollars this year to
come to the Giants, and he's not going to play football.
They are going with Tommy DeVito, who Mike Garafalo is
probably going to have to eat chicken palm on the
air again.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
We're gonna see a lot of that.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Oh, I forgot about hungriest news development for Mike Garritt
right there.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
But you know, I do remember last year and I
remember commenting on it to John Marra at an owners
meeting about like, obviously the season was not great, but
like fans were excited about Tommy DeVito. It sort of
gave fans something to feel good about and to have
some fun with even in the middle of this like
(06:28):
terrible season. And I sort of feel like that's where
we're headed with this now, is like I mean, the
season is.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
Obviously lost, it's it's a mess.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
Fans will be happy that it's Tommy DeVito and not
Drew Locke probably well.
Speaker 7 (06:42):
I saw a couple of things. One I saw a
comment from Brian Davil saying that Daniel Jones was pissed
off in so many words about the benching too late,
like that needed to show up sooner. That needed to
show up when they were going to private workouts and
pro days, for all the quarterbacks. They were hoping that
it wasn't a ploy, like they were really trying to
(07:04):
see if they can get themselves a quarterback in the draft.
And when they didn't, it was like, okay, well he
found out about it, So what that should be a
good thing. That should be him digging in and saying,
I am going to show you that you never should
have even gone to any of those pro days.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
He didn't.
Speaker 7 (07:16):
That's why they were happy a couple of weeks ago
when he showed some emotion in Pittsburgh and Dave All
was like, I love it. Well too late, Daniel two.
The Drew Lock situation is weird from the time they
signed and now he was hurt a little bit in
the preseason.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
That may have hurt him, uh, but no, they never
really hurt him a lot.
Speaker 6 (07:35):
Yeah, that set him back right.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
No, I'm sorry, I'm sorry to interrupt, go back in
a cent, But like I think a lot of this,
as was explained to me over the course of the
last week or so, was Dave Ball has not seen him.
He has seen Timmy Debido win games in the system.
He just hasn't seen Drew Lock. Now, obviously, if he
was like tearing it up in practice, then this would
be different. Obviously he's not, but that Mike is kind
(07:59):
of thing is like, you'd like to see some evidence
that can be done. They have seen it with your
good friend Tommy Devido.
Speaker 7 (08:05):
Yeah, which leads me to my next point, which is
they have to kind of walk the line between Okay, yeah,
a little bit of draft position, but also they've got
to win games and they've got to show some momentum
into the finish. Judy check me on this, because you've
been around John Mayraw longer, but we've both have been
around for a while. When he says in the middle
of the season that he doesn't expect to make changes,
(08:27):
I would say that that's ninety five percent going.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
To be the case.
Speaker 7 (08:31):
There's still that fight, Like if it's a complete disaster
down the stretch, there's nothing to say. He can't go
back on his word. But when he puts that out
there in the middle of the season, to me, that's
a really solid indication that that's where he is now.
The next step is you go into next year and
then there'll be an ultimatum of like they now we've
got to make the playoffs. But for now, if he
made a change on one or either head coach or gim,
(08:51):
I'd be surprised. But again, it's got we got to
see how it plays out. And finally I mentioned draft position.
This apparently is not the year to need a quarterback
high in the draft because these guys are not really
playing up to maybe what we thought they were going
to be and definitely not the previous drafts.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Nobody knows anything.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Every year you will have some people to come to
themselves of certain guys being draftable high. But when when
you talk to to scouts and gms around the league,
outside of Shooter Sanders, you don't really have like a
clear cut everybody's gonna feel really confident about taking this
guy up high. And even with shoot or there's all
kinds of different questions that go into it, starting out
(09:31):
with what Dion's gonna advise him to do and whether
Dion might wanna you know, it can come along like
a barnacle uh to the NFL. Uh. Here's a couple
other things too. So one on the the de Vito
overlock thing, there's the logical argument, which was I was
told it is the comfort level with the offense. It
is like Mike said, the fact that they've seen he's
(09:51):
just gotten a lot more reps locked with so much
time in camp, you know, you know what you're going
with de Vito. I also tend to agree with Judy,
which is, even though we shouldn't make decisions like what
do the fans want, what does talk radio want, the
environment surrounding Tommy DeVito and the excitement about it is
just completely different. If Drew Locke were to come out
and they go three and out on the first drive,
(10:13):
it is going to be boozed non stop. And I'm
not saying you won't get that, and that's bos although
it's probably be ooze involved as well. Based on how
the season is gone, Tommy DeVito is not going to
get a huge grace period either, but also the passion
for it's gonna be much higher. Also, Tommy DeVito is
on the second year of a rookie contract. He signed
for a ten thousand dollars bonus. You've got him for
(10:35):
the next couple of years. If Drew Locke comes out
and plays, well, now you got to pay for Locke
because he was on a one year contract with Daniel Jones.
The last point I would make on This is a
lot of people misunderstand when we talk about like cap
hits and the implications of these things. If they move
on from Daniel Jones, which based on today's news which
(10:56):
he and first had this morning, it's abundantly clear, right
they're moving on from Daniel Jones. Is there a world
where you can trade him? You never know, but one
way or another, he's not going to be a giant
by the time the twelve million dollar portion of his
twenty three million dollar injured guarantee becomes fully vested, which
is the fifth day of the league year, so basically
March sixteen. No matter what, they save about thirty million
(11:21):
dollars in cash. But they save eight figures of cap
space no matter what happens. Because Daniel Jones was on
the books for forty one million, that was his cap
number for twenty twenty five. It is coming substantially down
from that. I ran the numbers earlier. Today, they save
about twenty million dollars. If they don't use a post
June one designation, they save thirty million and twenty twenty
(11:41):
five cap spaces they do use the designation. In other words,
it's not like this Daniel Jones contract. Yes, last two
years clearly didn't go anybody wanted it to. But it's
not as if this is financially strapping you into the future.
We see, oh my god, they're gonna have a twenty now.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
The contract is totally responsible. I mean, it's annoying that
he's not as good as you'd like. The contract was
totally responsible and fine.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Twenty two million dollar dead cap hit is not the
bay of a deal. When you're kind of guy, what
a forty one million dollar cap numbers here? Say you're
freeing up money. Let's say Tommy DeVito is halfway decent.
Let's say you don't feel like you need to go
out and sign you know, next year's Drew Locke or
next year Sam Darnold, whatever. You can spend that money
on other places because you do have the extra cap
(12:23):
space in the additional cash. So the Giants will come
out with Tommy DeVito at quarterback against Tampa on Sunday.
Let's rewind now too, with so many good games yesterday, Judy,
I want to start with you on your thoughts of
you know, what may be the game of the year
to this point. And I'm not even talking about the
game last night, which was also unbelievable. But the Bills
(12:45):
Chiefs game a matchup that we've seen now what seven
times in the Mahomes Allen era. The Bills have swept
the regular season matchups, the Chiefs have swept the postseason matchups.
But for a Buffalo team that everybody kind of looked
at this year said they we've got so many changes
and all the pass catchers are different or whatever. They've
played well and matched up against that Chiefs team that's
(13:07):
shown that they've got some cracks and what they're doing
so far this year, it seemed apparent to me watching
it that you know, that was just a better Buffalo team.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
It was, and I thought Sean McDermott had them at
the perfect pitch going into it the whole week, going
into it, an even postgame, which was that was great.
We played well, good team win, and we've got to
do it.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
Again in January, Like there was no like, WHOA, we
made a statement. We showed everybody we can beat the Chiefs.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
Because they've been down this road before and then they
lose in January and their crestfallen. So they're at a
point now where they know, like, yeah, that was good
we played really well, complete team win. I don't want
to say it means nothing, but like you know, see
you in January, right, You've got to do this.
Speaker 6 (13:53):
You've got to do this in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Now.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
Having said that, for a team that was supposed to
be in a bridge season with all of these young
playlayers who are just supposed to be getting there's I mean,
wow wow. And I give especially for last night, I
give a lot of credit to Sean McDermott, who in
the past has been criticized for how he has approached games,
maybe too conservatively, you know, sort of playing not to lose.
(14:19):
He was right on that fourth and two, like to
not kick the field goal, to know, like you do
not want to give them the ball back up only five?
Speaker 6 (14:27):
What does that do?
Speaker 5 (14:29):
And to put the ball in the hands of not
only your best player, but maybe in the conversation for
best player in the league right now, Josh.
Speaker 6 (14:37):
Allen, I loved that call.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
I thought that said a lot about Shawn's mindset, and
certainly if he has that mindset going into the playoffs.
He's been criticized in the past for how they have
lost games in the playoffs. If he is that aggressive
and that like go go go attitude that may help
they may have a different outcome against the Chiefs and
(15:00):
anybody else in January.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Impressive win.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
I was really impressed with the way they handled it.
I mean, Josh Allen was like flat line after the game, like, yeah,
it means we got to nine wins, really and that
was it. Yeah, that's what he was.
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Like.
Speaker 5 (15:13):
Von Miller was really excited. He said, you got to,
you know, celebrate. It's hard to win in the league.
But Josh Allen and Sean McDermott, I mean, I said,
like Toshan McDermott, I said, I know this is your thing,
Like you don't you know, you got to do this
in January. But now that you're in the moment and
you just had this big win, is this a statement?
He's like, no, statement, Okay, Like I think that's the
right that's the right pitch that they need to be at.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
I mean, there's a couple of cool things for me.
One like Steelers Ravens was truly awesome and enjoyable and
to me, like just as far as like viewing experience,
I thought that was one of my favorite games I've
watched the whole season because I mean every game, every
play is a car crash and Olmar's you hold your breath.
(15:57):
I mean just that was really fun. This game was
also are really fun. The eventuality of this is just
the coolest thing. Like I wondered, I assume we'll get
some of it, but like I wonder, when you when
players see each other at the fifty yard line when
the game is.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Over, if they're like, all right, coolbre hey, listen Mahome
said it.
Speaker 6 (16:15):
It was caught on the microphone.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Mahomes said to Josh Allen, will do it again, baby,
that's like, yeah, see in.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
A few weeks, like you know, and like.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
For I'm sure it sucks for so many others obviously.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
That's what I was just thinking, Like you're every other team.
You got the Bills and the Chiefs, you got the
Ravens in the studios, like there's there's nowhere to go
in the AFC. There's some other really good teams, like
the Chargers are one too, and we'll we'll talk about
them a little bit more. But it's like, look at
just what's in front of you in those two games yesterday,
look at all four of those teams, and you're like,
(16:49):
all right, so there's seven spots. That leaves three for
everybody else here.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:55):
Yeah, I going back to the whole like statement game
or whatever. You know, it's like, oh, yeah, well we
did that and then they lost them. It's like, well,
maybe this one will allow us to get home fit.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
It's like had that too.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
And that you know that that didn't work either.
Speaker 7 (17:11):
So I guess it kind of took the fun out
of yesterday, right because you're like, oh, this is exciting,
and you know, I just but I do appreciate the approach,
and I do appreciate you know, I would say that
the only statement that maybe is made internally is that
subtracting Stefan Diggs and I know they added to Mark Cooper,
(17:31):
but subtracting Stefan Diggs, you're still that upper echelon team.
And you still as long as you've got that quarterback
who can put you on his back and make that
play that he made to seal the game late. As
long as you've got that guy that you feel good
about it like, that's you know, you're still an upper
echelon team. It's not necessarily a rebuilding year. It's more
of like what we see in the outside you take
(17:52):
away an elite player, but they felt like, we're still
going to be okay, We're still gonna find our way
in that department, and they certainly had enough yesterday.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
I put it to you that way. A lot of
great games, like close games, battles between great teams, yesterday
I missed most of them because I was watching one
of the most lopsided games in NFL history. It was
a Lions Jaguars game that was exactly what it looked
like on paper, which was a Jacksonville team that is
(18:21):
starting a backup quarterback. They don't have their running back,
they are worn out, their defense is playing like forty
minutes a week on the field. They scored the second
touch on. Jaguars actually hit the field goal in the
opening possession the second drive, where the Lions.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Could have no knowledge about by the way, yes they
were and they kicked.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
A fifty odd yard field goal, and after that the
rest of the way, the Lions scored the second the
second touchdown, and I turned my field producer and I'm like,
so should we just do you want to head down now?
Because it could be tricky at Ford Field, like get
down when you're on the elevator and you're going one
level at a time. I'm like, I think we probably
could just go down now, Like this is clearly where
(19:02):
this is going. I mean, this is historic. Seven touchdowns
in seven drives. I cannot oversay for all the people
who didn't see that game, which was most of the country,
these touchdowns were like not close. They weren't like, you know,
you were gutting it out. They were like long catch
and run type plays. Everybody scored a touchdown, Jamison Williams,
(19:25):
David Montgomery, and Jamier Gibbs. I'm on Arsony prit It
was like it was like they went down the fantasy checklist,
So like, all right, everybody then not Brock right, Sure
Laporta is not healthy today, we'll go to you. They are,
Judy watching them in person as dominant as a team
of a team as we have seen this season. Obviously
they lost to Tampa in Week two when Tampa was
still healthy at that time. But you watch the way
(19:48):
that they operate, especially in their building. If they get
the number one seed, and I had someone say that
to me, if they get the number one seed, good
luck to everybody else because that place gets rocking and
they got so many different ways that they can beat
you it almost doesn't even matter that lest we forget,
they lost their best defensive player like four or five
(20:10):
weeks ago and have not missed much of the beat.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
So I saw them against the Cowboys when we still
thought the Cowboys were a good team. But that was
sort of the game that really made you say, like, wow,
the Cowboys are non competitive. But what I was impressed
with watching them in that game was they pour it
on right. At no point did they take their foot
off the gas, which is really good preparation for the
(20:34):
playoffs when you might come up against, you know, better
a competition than they saw yesterday and that they saw
against the Cowboys. They pour it on, They empty the playbook,
they keep going. They are happy to show you all
the ways that they can kick your butt weekend and
week out, and they're doing it, and.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
I mean, I can't.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
It's I know that. You know, obviously the Eagles are
right behin behind them, and the Vikings right behind them too.
For home field advantage, I think if we look at
the schedules, I think Alliance probably have the most manageable
schedule remaining of those three teams.
Speaker 7 (21:13):
Sort of some tough ones.
Speaker 5 (21:16):
Some tough ones, but they've already beat those teams. They've
already beat the Vikings, and they've already beat the.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
Packers, Packers and Bills at home. They're at the forty
nine Ers and then they got the Vikings. So they've
got three of these tough games at home, which is
so it does lend itself well to that.
Speaker 6 (21:29):
Yeah, but I agree with you.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
I mean, if they have home field advantage, like I mean,
good luck to the rest of the NFC. Like that,
there's sort of what you were saying about, like when
you look at Chiefs, Bills, Raven Steelers, is like the
rest of the NFC has to look up out and
be like, how we're going to get through that.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
So even in the even in the Division e in too,
I mean, you look at it. The Vikings are sitting there.
The last few weeks though, I mean, the Vikings have
had to play those you know, one score type games.
The Packers have had a few bumps. They still look
really good. All three of those teams are really good.
But the Lions are blowing people out. Like I had research,
(22:05):
I gotta pull them up. I had research sending me
all these stats. I was again, I had a lot
of time to kill in the second half of that game,
so I was asking him, like, as the numbers kept rising, like,
can you guys send me some stats on the level
to which they're dominating. Oh, first of all, fifty two
to six was a score of gami. First fifty two
to six game in NFL history, only three teams have
(22:28):
ever had seven drives and seven touchdowns. The other two
were Tom Brady in two thousand and seven, one of
the greatest offenses of all time, and Josh Allen did
it in a wild card game a few years ago.
Second time the season, the Lions have hit fifty plus
points fifth time in franchise history. So two of their
five fifty plus games of all time were this year,
(22:50):
and they have four of the top ten highest scoring
performances in twenty twenty four. Like, these are macro historic
type steps. They set a franchise record for yards yesterday,
and they pulled him, They pulled the guys in the
fourth quarter who was handed hooker in the backups out there,
and they still went down and kicked a field goal.
I mean, this is this is rare. Ben Johnson's done
(23:11):
unbelievable job but also Brad Holmes stand Campbell. The way
they've built that thing. They've just got, you know, weapons
for days, and they're they're gonna be a tough out.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
So I was at a one of Jude's lacrosse tournaments
on Saturday at like basically from like nine o'clock on
Long Island to like four o'clock right, which is really
fun sitting there in a little YETI chair, trying to
write my articles. Anyway, one of the dads comes up,
Ye chair, we have to sit down on the field.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
I don't want to, like.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
YETI has the best chairs. Oh my god, it's amazing. Anyway,
so one of the dads comes up to me, he's.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Like, hey, say that they really do make great chairs.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
I am a guy he'll send you chairs and he.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
Sent me too.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
It's amazing. They also have a back you can put
him on like a backpacks. She can carry on your back.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
Anyway, I have a monk, not a sponsor anyway.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
So anyway, so on the one of the dads comes
up to me and is like, hey, I'm along suffering
Lions fan. I'm just curious, like real quick, like why
do you think they've turned it around? Like they have
and I'm like, that is not a real quick and
I was literally standing there nothing else to do. I
like went into it and it really is like a
ten minute discussion of like Brad Holmes has drafted exactly
(24:33):
the type of players that Dan Campbell wants. They are tough,
they're physical, they work hard. They are not for everyone.
Not everybody would draft a running back at twelve and
a linebacker who most people had as a third rounder.
And they are literally the perfect football players for this team.
They have an offensive line that I mean Campbell sort
(24:54):
of joked about it, but he was like, when they
play like that, we can do whatever we want.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
And it is really true. They can do whatever they want.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
The culture is great. We have empowered Jared Goff.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
To play as he is talented enough to play but
certainly was not doing in Los Angeles. And the fact
that they are now getting like quote unquote criticized for
destroying teams in a blowout is the greatest problem of
all time. Like I don't love that sort of argument
because it's like, you know, stop like stop us right right.
I mean, you know you want to keep players at
(25:26):
harm's way, but also stop them. But it is incredible
that they are here, and it's like the worlds have
had to collide to create this behemoth. And I don't
know where the Lions are going. But this one thing
I told my new lacrosse friend now is like, God forbid,
they make.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
God forbid they make it to the super Bowl. Obviously
we're good friends. Anyway, I never liked you very much.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Anyway, God forbid they make it to the super Bowl,
and their fans will eat it up like we haven't
seen so.
Speaker 6 (26:01):
Much fun, so much fun.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
Uh sorry, that was messed up.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
That was my we go back to my weakness. Okay,
you know that.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
Hey I met a guy today outside my kids school.
He's like, hey, I just i've seen you, you know,
a big fan of the Insiders, which how could you
not be?
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (26:21):
CJ that's his name.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (26:22):
CJ?
Speaker 7 (26:25):
My thought was on golf because you mentioned golf. I
was thinking about this earlier today because back to Daniel
Jones for just a second. Daniel Jones, you know, he's
got that look and like it looks like there's nothing
going on, there's no pulse there. And then the first
game he leads a comeback against the Buccaneers, since then, Like,
we haven't seen that at all. So when I'm when
(26:47):
you meet Eli Manning, you go same thing, like there's
just nothing there, there's no pulse, there's no and then
you see it on the field, right, And it's gotta
be so hard to see that. You got to look
for it on the field when they're evaluating them in college.
I guess, yes, Jared Golf is kind of like that.
And he's a killer and you don't realize it, Like
he is a stone cold killer. Spent plenty of time
(27:08):
interviewed him several times.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
He's a great guy.
Speaker 7 (27:11):
Life is good, He's made a ton of money.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
His wife is gorgeous, Like don got to have a
good golf swing. Good golf swing.
Speaker 7 (27:21):
Name is almost golf, which makes sense. Yeah, But it's
like a killer and he wants that super Bowl bad
and he wants it for that town.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
He's like I.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
Would not have figured him to be the perfect quarterback
for this team in this.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Town, but he is.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (27:34):
So Jared Goff just continues to impress me. And I guess,
don't cross Jared Golf. He's got that killer inside him somewhere.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
If you go back and I guess that the cutoff
would have been the start of November. So basically, though,
you go back to twenty twenty two, so two years ago.
At this time, the Dan Campbell Lions are four nineteen
and one. Dan Campbell one point had say, like you know,
said hey, I need more out of Jared and there
(28:03):
was talk of her they just gonna bench him, and
the entire narrative was the backup. I don't even remember this.
You got me on that he didn't play. Whatever it
was might have been David Blough at that point, but
bottom line, there was discussion, like real discussion about like oh,
I think it was after a game against Pittsburgh if
I remember right, and it was he was like I
need more, I need more from him. Think of the
(28:25):
level of losing. Think of how many coaches who are
way better than four nineteen and one midway through year two,
and how many places would pull the plug or the
fans would give up or they came to public pressure.
Dan Campbell was a joke to a lot of people.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
That's why I want to give credit to Sheila Ford
for hiring him.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
She she Hi Ford.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
It really does seem like she has sort of keyed
this yes, and everyone in the building they all said
the same thing, like, oh, she is awesome.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
I'm like, well, you know she just jesus.
Speaker 5 (29:01):
Well, I mean she she hired him, right, I mean
she at a time when I don't think people knew
what to make of that, right, and then give the
ankle biter thing.
Speaker 8 (29:12):
And you know Tom hates the knee cat, Yes, the kneecat,
which was all like every time we talked about Dan
Campbell and NFL ever for a year and a half,
they'd play that clip and I was like, I remember
one time, it's being.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
Like, why do we why are we still doing this?
Like there is more to Dan Campbell, but it's just
like nobody had anything to go on. I just think
that it's a really important reminder regardless of what you
as Mike sends the article Jared God needs a step
up more than he has, which is from October seventeen
twenty in the first year as the loss of the
(29:43):
Bengals sor right, I had the right division. But it's
just it's a good reminder that regardless of what people think,
regardless of the jokes that are made on social media, like,
it's a good lesson to owners as well. If you
believe in people, it does take time. It not everything
is a quick overnight fix. And now you watch how
(30:04):
they have drafted to that mentality. They play to that mentality.
They got guys who are all pulling the same direction
and have built themselves in the mold of their head
coach and their city. It's really cool to see it
come together. And now let's see if anybody in the
NFC can keep these guys from being the ones that
are taking on the Chiefs or the Bills, or the
(30:25):
Ravens or the Steelers or whoever it is come the
Super Bowl. All right, that was Part one of the
Monday podcast and YouTube show. There's a part two as well,
so you should stick around for that. We're gonna be
talking about the Ravens Steelers game. We will talk about
the wildness of Chargers Bengals. We're getting to Anthony Richardson
back in the lineup. Bo Nix is sort a whole
(30:46):
lot more. So stick around or I guess appenically go
to the other one. Hopefully it prompts you to do that.
If it doesn't, go find it for Mike and Judy,
I'm Tom.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
We will see that
