Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome Inside with the Insiders, a Monday podcast edition alongside
from Blockwise, Judy Batista, Ian rapp or Mike Garafollo.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I am Tom Pelicero.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Thank you to those of us, those of you who
have found us on the NFL Channel on fast streaming platforms,
first airing after Monday Night Football every Monday. For those
of you listening to the podcast, it is a two
part episode every Monday. Looks a little different, sounds a
little different, but it's us going through everything we just
witnessed from the Sunday in this case of week eight
(00:39):
of the NFL Station. And let's start out, Ian, Let's
beget into some of the injury updates, including a couple
coming out of the Eagles and Giants game yesterday.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah, I think the Cam Scattabow injury was you know,
we do a lot of reporting on injuries and specifics
and how long guy's going to be out. There have
been a couple this season where no specifics have been necessary.
That was one with Cam Scattaboy. I mean, anyone watching
knew that it was a dislocated ankle. Trying to find
a picture to eventually tweet out what it eventually ended
(01:11):
up being was tough because every picture, it seems, showed
the ankle going the wrong way. It was honestly pretty horrific.
And you know, any injury is bad, any injury to
his starting contributing player is bad, but this one really
stung a lot because you felt like how important Cam
Skataboo was to the Giant sort of heartbeat. He's out
(01:32):
for the season. Emergency surgery yesterday because he had an
open wound, which you know, for those who followed Alex
Smith closely, was good job by the Giants, do a
great job, but that was good job by the Giants
to get him in there, get it clean. Sounded like
surgery went well. Out for the season obviously, but should
be back next season if there are no complications. Saquon
(01:56):
Barkley also did not finish the game. That was a
groin injury, much more minor. My understanding is that had
the game not been in doubt, Saquon probably would have returned.
So that means as I, unlike what I said on
Good Morning Football today, Saquon is not going to play
next week because the Giants the Eagles have a buy
(02:16):
so he should play the following week, which is good news. There.
Patrick Sertan, the Broncos corner, the reigning Defensive Player of
the Year, suffered a shoulder injury. Seems like a peck
injuries getting an MRI just to determine how serious that is.
Is it torn, is it strained? Is it something he
could play with theesn't sound like it's something where as
(02:39):
of right now he could miss major, major time, but
doesn't seem like a minor injury either, So more information
on that as it comes. And then we also had
some news on a trade the Los Angeles Rams, who
I'm pretty sure didn't play yesterday because I think they're
also on to buy, but I could be wrong about that.
Traded for that's right, okay, great traded for Roger McCreary,
(03:00):
the versatile corner for the Titans. It is a sixth
rounder and mccreer for a fifth rounder that actually originally
belonged to the Titans and the Ernest Jones trade that Tom,
I think you broke. So the Rams trade for a corner.
It has been a really really uncharacteristically quiet trade market
today broke that with the McQuary trade going to the Rams,
(03:21):
and I think that's all of the news. We had
so far today.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
I believe that's nineteen days since the prior NFL trade.
It was the Jaguars and brown swapping corners several weeks ago,
the late round pickswap involving a player that most people
have never heard of. We'll see if we are able
to exceed that as we move forward. Here still eight
days out from the NFL trade deadline. Serve that we'll
(03:46):
talk more about some of the possibilities as this show
rolls on. We'll also get into that Eagles Giants game
where I know Mike and Judy were But let's start
out Judy. Maybe the game of the day it was
the Packers Steelers I guess night. Technically it was Sunday
night football game that was competitive in the early going,
but it seemed like when the Packers needed to put
their foot on the gas, they were able to do
(04:08):
that at a different level. I think that we've seen
before Jordan Love played out of his mind, and as
much as the Steelers may not be a perfect team
at this stage, still, Judy felt like a statement type
of game with the whole country watching for Green Bad.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
It was a statement type of second half, right, I mean,
they just completely dominated the second half. Right, Jordan Love
completed twenty consecutive passes, which is crazy. You know, they
just took over, you know, a defense that has a
lot of big names and that did not perform the
way you would think a very big name defense should
(04:46):
be performing. And then you know, the offense didn't play poorly.
The Steelers offense I'm talking about didn't play poorly. They
were not completing drives though, right, they could not get
it in the Red Stone. I mean, they relied on
Chris Boswell, who's had a terrific season, but that ain't
going to do it when Jordan Love is on a
heater and the Packers are playing. You know, I feel
(05:07):
like the Packers looked like last night what they look
like in Week one, when they look like, whoa, this
is a super Bowl team and sort of you know,
you sort of feel like they ebbed a little bit,
and last night I thought like, Okay, that's the Packers
team that we thinks are going to be. That was
an impressive statement kind of victory again on national television,
(05:29):
and Jordan Love, like, I don't I don't really understand
why there are continuing questions about whether Jordan Love is
a superstar quarterback. He's a superstar.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
That does seem to be the I know it's Mike's
turned to talk, but that does seem to be the question.
It's like, is Jordan Love good? Yeah, Like the answer is.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Really really really good, really really good.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Anyway, go ahead, Mike.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, I'm we go back to a couple of weeks ago, they.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Tie the Cowboys and it's like, oh, is this Packer's
defense all it's cracked up to be?
Speaker 2 (05:58):
And all?
Speaker 5 (05:58):
You know, I mean, we had that every team through
the course of the year. It's just this is the
year where there are no great teams. It's kind of
sort of a plateau of teams at the top here
into the second tier as well.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
So I think it was a.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
Important performance for them in a spot where even Jordan
Love sort of said he felt the pressure of basing
Aaron Rodgers, so for them to do that.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
To come back as well. I think they sort of
stuck to what.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
Their plan was coming into the game and didn't panic,
which is great. I mean, to be able to show
that kind of common resolve against a really good coach,
a really well coached excuse me team, I thought.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Was important for them.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
So all of a sudden have this feeling of like
the Packers being back to who we saw early in
the season, and it's just you know, the the late
September into early October. You said we're gonna talk about
the Eagles, and we will, but like you think about
all that's changed, like within the last two weeks with
these with these teams, Now is now where you want
to play consistently? Carry that through Thanksgiving and then then
(07:01):
I say, the real season begins. But that's really where
it comes down to, all right, where are you fitting
in in your conference? Are you hosting games? You're gonna
have to go on a road wild car you a
division winner? That's where we're getting too shortly.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah, I think, yeah, sorry, just real real quickly. I
think we'll all talk about Jordan Lovin. We'll talk about
the problems with the Steelers offense, which I don't know
that it's like a problem problem. They're just not very explosive,
maybe because they play so many tight ends and those
are their best players. They're just like you could see
why the Steelers need a receiver. The Packers defense really
(07:32):
is really really good. I mean, Jeff Affley is setting
himself up to be probably a head coach candidate. And
I know they have Mike end that's great to drop
into their lap, and he was really good in moments
last night, but like they clamp down when they need to,
and they made the Steelers offense look really, really not
good enough. If the pack like Jordan Love, playing like
(07:52):
this awesome, If that defense continues to play like this,
the Packers are really going to be in it for
the long run.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
While the Steelers fall to four and three, which is
notable across numerous fronts here, one being the Ravens get
to win yesterday. We'll talk about that a little bit later.
Over the Bears, they're now just two games out after
everything that's happened to first place and the other yet correct,
they still have the division games ahead and the matchups ahead.
But then also the Bengals, as bad as they were
(08:20):
on defense yesterday, and that was Judy as bad I
think as you can play against the Jets offense that
could do nothing right forever the owner comes out and
talks about how bad the quarterback plays, Justin Fields gets
a reprieve, in part because Tyron Taylor's not healthy.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Enough to play.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Justin Fields went out and played well, and it's only
the Jets geared things toward what he did well to
help Justin Fields get a really nice bounce back and
Aaron Glenett his first win.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean, what a week for the New York Jets, Like,
I mean, yikes. First of all, credit to Justin Fields,
because he talked a postgame about like what the last
week was like for him and how difficult it was.
He talked about like literally lying on the floor in
his closet, like, I mean, it's it's been tough on him,
which I think it would be very tough if you
(09:12):
were a player and the owner of the team like
publicly blamed you for how bad the team is. I mean,
that's that's tough. So credit to him for sticking in
there and playing certainly his best game of this season
and of maybe the last several seasons. They also stuck
to Breeze Hall, which is something that I think they
(09:32):
needed to do, and they did, and he played great.
They were missing their top two wide receivers, so I
mean they clearly had to adjust and they did, and
they stuck to it even when they were down. I mean,
they would have fifteen points going into the fourth quarter.
I was watching, you know, we were in Philadelphia, and
I was watching the scoreboard the whole time, and they
fell behind right away and the score was climbing, and
(09:54):
I thought, oh my gosh, this is going to just
be you know, it's going to get away from them
really quickly, and to their credit, if it did not,
they stuck with it. And that was a huge, hugely
important win for them in a what was aizar very
emotional week for the Giants and for the Jets, pardon me.
And then you know they're going into the buy, so
(10:14):
at least they get to feel a little bit positive
going into their vibe.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
The Justin Fields thing is very interesting. It's he has
obviously struggled. I have maintained that he is a good quarterback.
I really think he is. He's just in this weird
funk or when you pressured him, it's like he froze.
It's not weird, I mean it's stabilitating, like it was
stopped letting him be a starting quarterback. Essentially, he seemed
to have got out of it this past week, and
(10:40):
I'll be really curious if that continues. A Couple of
things that come to my mind one, everyone seems genuinely
happy for him, like really happy. I know he hasn't
played great or good, but he seems to be a
really good guy, genuine guy, works really hard and whatever
this ends up being, this moment was pretty good for
Justin Fields to kind of prove that he can do it,
(11:03):
which I kind of like. The other thing is, as
the Jets might get into this situation of having a
buy and the trade deadline is coming in, like how
many guys do they trade? They only have one win?
I wonder which direction this sends them in, because like,
if they are going to be like Dan Campbell's you know,
one in seven or whatever Lions, they should probably have
(11:24):
good players because that helps them for next year. If
they're not, they should trade players like Breece halland get
a real picks before he leaves and for agency. I
actually don't know what the answer is, but I'm curious
which way they go as an organization after what was
a pretty good win.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
I'll work backward start there.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
With the trade deadline, they need to figure out who
wants to be there and who they want to be there, Like,
they need to figure out who their core is with
the Jets, So I advise them over the next week
or so to make those final decisions, and they if
they don't feel like somebody fits or maybe he doesn't
want to be there or whatever reason, because there's been
(12:04):
you know, it's been alluded to. I mean, Breese Hall's
alluded to it. Uh, make those decisions at that point.
As far as Justin Fields goes, that's always been the
case with him, Like he was really liked in the
Bear's locker room.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
When Mike Tomlin went to Russell Wilson, the.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Entire not the entire locker room, A large part portion
of that locker room was very upset because they did
like Justin Fields very much and thought that he was
about to flourish there. And as far as you know,
Woody Johnson's comments, if they had a positive effect on
Justin Field's play, that's great.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I just wouldn't advise going to that well too often because.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
I mean, it would actually be great if Woody Johnson
comes out during the bye week and trash his fields
again and be like, okay, keep it going like that,
that would be That's actually funny.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Because I would imagine that it had a negative impact
for a lot of people as far as what they
felt toward it in that locker room.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
So it was good for one week, good.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
For Justin Field. I'm always like Justin Field's I think
he's a good young man. I think he's a hard worker,
and good for him to get them some success there.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Of course, Jets also got that win on the day
we had the tragic news Mike of Nick Mangled passed
it away at the age of forty one. You knew him,
you covered him some, just your thoughts quickly if you
could on Nick Mangle.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Yeah, and he when I went national because I was
covering the Giants and I went to the USA today
and it's I had writers who had made the jump
before tell me, it's like, it's going to feel weird
to you.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
It's gonna like you're used to structured things. Now you're
kind of wide open.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
And the Jets were kind of my step into it
because I'd covered the Giants. It's like, here's the next team,
even though you really hadn't covered them in the same market.
So do a lot of Jets sort of start to expand.
And he was always gracious. He was always as informative
as he could be. He was a personality that you
only really saw like little peaks of like you knew
it was there and you heard about it, but he
(13:57):
didn't really show it necessarily to the media a lot.
He never took himself too seriously. He had that robe
that would wear around the locker room. I think only
on Fridays, is what Bran Cassella was saying, because that's
what he called spa day when he would get a
massage and a dunk.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
He's he's a great family man. I feel for his family.
What do you call the old oh got it a plunge?
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Plunge, that's the word punge. That makes more sorry.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
I feel for him. I feel for his family, I
feel for his kids.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
I was texting with his one of his agents, Joe Flanagan,
last night, who.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Didn't have a whole lot of like he had a
Hall of Fame client.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
It's not like he has his long list of so
I know how much time he spent with him and
how he told me like I met him when he
was nineteen, Like that's how far back they went. So
I feel for everybody in the Jets building that has
been close to him and played with him. Our condolences
to them. Nick Mangold gone way too soon.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Eagles Giants the rematch yesterday of what is still one
of the games of the year, the breakthrough or the
Giants start out competitive once again, camp Scataboo making a
big play in the passing game. It had that vibe
of this is going to be competitive again. We have
the camp Scataboo injury that Hean detailed in the early
going of that game. It was a parent Mike and Judy,
(15:15):
you were both there. The impact that had on Jackson Dart,
the impact had on the rest of the team. Clearly
it was not the same Giants for the rest of
that game, but being there live, Mike, just just take
me through the emotions of that game and even beyond
the Giants too. Also what you saw from the Eagles
putting some things together, particularly with Saquon.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
The Giants have been a weird like things are going well,
a lot of key things are going well, and yet.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
They're two and six. They lose Milik Neighbors, they lose.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
Camp Scatapou, Jackson Dart's doing all he possibly can. It's
just this weird feeling of like, yeah, we're moving in
the right direction, and we've talked about this coming in,
like Brian dabole.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
For his job this year. They could be.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
Six and ten and be like, oh, okay, things are
moving in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
He's coming back again, even without a great record. Usually
you're on the fence like that, and it's like, we'd.
Speaker 5 (16:11):
Have to be talking about a potential playoff team to
really save your job.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
I don't know. I think you know that number right
around six. We may still have to have a conversation
where he's back. It's it definitely did.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
I mean they didn't look at that, but it definitely
did take the wind out of theirselves. Some are a
few key calls that probably should not have gone against them,
one being that Tousch push that Keevon Thibodeau was upset about.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
They whistled.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
You talk about the impossible to officiate. Oh my god,
the Toush push situation.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
If that doesn't merit an apology from the league office
to the Giants. I mean, that was as bad a
call as you'll see.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
And what I liked, I like the Brian Dable challenged it,
even after being told you can't judge Ford progress, I believe,
and Dabele hasn't explained it, but I believe the reason
he challenges that is he wanted the officials to have
to say on the record, yes, we did not blow
forward progress when he was stopped behind the line. We
didn't blow it until he reached out the ball, but
(17:08):
instantaneously it was right then, before the ball was ripped away,
that's when forward progress was stopped. In other words, he's
short of the sticks until he reaches the ball out.
The moment he reaches the ball out, it's ripped away,
So that is the fastest. Like the laws of physics
would tell you that anything in terms of momentum would
need time to slow down.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Right, it doesn't stop immediately.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
There's this slowing pro there's a deceleration process here.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
At least that's me Judy.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
I was not a physics major, but that is my
loose understanding from the astronomy class I took that you
need a deceleration and apparently in this case that didn't happen.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
So why not challenge it? Say no, no, no, no, no,
we're giving.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Him forward progress only where he reached out the ball,
not where he stopped before he reached out the ball
before we ripped it away.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
From Yeah, I mean it costs the Giant seven points
there because two plays later or something. That's uh, it
was close at that point. Having said all of that,
like if that play had been officiated correctly, it still
wouldn't have accounted for the Giants defense inability to stop.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
The running game.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
You know, I mean that the Eagles played really well,
certainly their most complete effort of the season. Right they
got they finally got se Guang going. The defense played well.
They you know, the Eagles dominated them in every part
of the game. And so yeah, I mean the push
push was a mess. And also by the way, that
offensive pass interference it was also not a great call.
(18:43):
But okay, but even if that's even if you say
that's a fourteen point swing, it still doesn't make up
for you know, that the Giants could not not slow
down the Eagles. And now it's hard to imagine. I mean,
the Giants have lost two critical members of the offense.
I mean, there had been so much energy and so
(19:03):
much excitement, and I thought the Eagles did a good
job also of that. You know, when Scataboo was still
in the game, you could feel it going. As soon
as he left, the wind went out of their sales
and they did a really good job also of stopping
Jackson dart from doing what he did to them in
the first game, which was used his legs right, they
pinned him in better, they sacked him, you know. And
(19:26):
Skataboo's absence and containing Jackson Dartmouth, the Giants also weren't
getting that lift of energy that Dart's been able to
bring to the team. So completely different game than that
first game, that's for sure.
Speaker 5 (19:37):
Lots of thoughts about this game I will try to
get through quickly with Scataboo have reminded me really cool
scene at the end of the game, poignant scene the
athletic training staffs and the doctors for both teams met
at midfield. They they'll do that, I mean after a game,
shake hands, just like the players and the coaches do.
But there was definitely communication from the Eagle stores at
the Giants wanting to know what was going on with
Camp Scataboo. Hey, how do you make out?
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Where is he is? The hospital? What's going to happen?
He's gonna have surgery? Like I sort of heard some
of that stuff. I tried not to eavesdrop, but I
was standing right there, so.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
I thought that was really cool and shows that you know,
everybody's competing here, but when it comes to the health
and safety of the players, everybody's on the same page.
The Eagles locker room was definitely joyful and had a
different vibe to it than early in the season when
they were winning games, and yet there just didn't feel
like a celebratory element to it. Jalen Hurts coming off
(20:28):
the field yesterday I posted this and I said, look,
I know it's not much like I know you're gonna
look at this and be like big, But he jogged off,
He's pumping his fist, he high fives a fan, he
jumps up. He usually just slowly walks off or it's
like a slow job with like no emotion. There was
definite him feeling like we have come a long way
in just two weeks now. AJ Brown wasn't on the field,
(20:50):
so that opens up the conversation are we better without him?
I heard that Donavan mcnap got broke his leg one
year A J.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Pheeley comes in. That was the conversation in Philly. There
were columns of being written about it.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
It was on sports opera that always had That's a
common thing in Philadelphia. There is an element of, well,
we didn't have to force feed the ball to somebody
them for him to be happy today, so we could
run our offense the way we went to I would
not say that they're better off without him, but it
was a week where they could just kind of just okay,
all right, this is how the offense is supposed to run.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
So I think there's an element of that.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
Even Saquon said it, and I mentioned this during their
mini bye, but Sequon said it like this bye week
is good to get away from each other, Like we
need to get away and take a break from each other.
A little less so than two weeks ago when they
played the Giants, but still like they need a breadth.
They've been together for a while. Let's get away, come back,
start fresh. Part two of the regular season.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
So the Eagles are.
Speaker 5 (21:44):
I give them credit for winning the last two weeks
because there's been a lot going on down there. Let's
see how they come back after the buy and last
year during the bye did a great job of self
scouting and adjusting their offense. I feel like they needed
to still do a little bit of that as well.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
Didn't they go undefeated after the bye last year they did,
so I was I was so interested in this game
because you know you and I just talked to Jeffrey Lorie,
who really laid out this very detailed, sort of psyche
update on the Eagles about how much better they are
when there's noise, how they're trained for it, how part
of the reason that they have Jalen Hurts is because
(22:19):
he plays better when there's all the noise, which they
create some of the noise, but so does Philly. Nice job, Mike,
And it was all true. I mean it was all true.
Like Jalen Hurts has played two of his best games
in the last two weeks, when all anyone's done is
talk about him and the relationships and all that. What
I'm interested in is kind of what you know, what
(22:42):
I'm interested in is is kind of what Mike talked about,
is like, how does aj Brown come back into this Now?
Does he go all right, I saw you guys role
and I wasn't playing like I'm just going to be
a part of it. Does is he? I don't know,
I really don't know, But like there's no other team
where we talk talk about like the relationships more than
the Eagles, and it only seems like they're going to
(23:04):
be there at the end. So my guess is we're
gonna be talking about egos relationships a lot, which is
kind of fun, but probably not for the Eagles.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
I would say to the extent that the Cowboys were
looked at as a team that could challenge Eagles in
the NFC East. Well, we'll talk more about that in
part two because there's plenty to unravel there. Stick around again,
two part podcast every single Monday. If you're watching this
on the NFL channel, if you are watching it on YouTube,
just stick around.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
We will be right back.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
We are going to get into Lamar Jackson, what is
his status moving for the Ravens, finally getting a big win.
We got the Dolphins to I think that other eye
is open again, but they lit it up yesterday a
whole lot more so, stick around for Mike, he and Judy.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
I'm Tom.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Let's see the
