Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome back to the Insiders podcast. That was Part one,
which I assume you've consumed before this, But if you
haven't got to Part one, which we did before this,
this is part two. Ian Rappaport here, Gudabatista there, Sarah
Waalsh joining us from London. We got a lot to
talk about, including the game that Sarah witnessed from the sideline.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Did a great job.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
By the way, it was Jets Broncos. It was something.
It was a game. But that's not where I want
to start. You spent a lot of time with the
Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
In fact, I think we were when I was in
Tennessee last I believe you were also in Tennessee if
I remember correctly.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, I don't go to Tennessee without you. Ian Rappaport,
that's perfect.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
So you know these guys.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Brian Callahan was fired just earlier today after a tough
tenure into a second season. Judy and I have weighed
in on part one. Sarah way in on part two.
Are you surprised and what did you think?
Speaker 5 (01:03):
I am surprised only because if I think, if I
flash back to and I always feel like these NFL
seasons go by in the blink of an eye. But
if I flash back to training camp, which really wasn't
all that long ago, right, I mean, we're not halfway
through the season, and I remember standing on the sidelines
and I had a conversation with their president, Chad Brinker,
about how this organization has had so much turnover in
(01:27):
recent years from the coaching side, from the GM side,
and sort of where this organization was at at that
point because of all the turnover from a quarterback perspective,
this organization has turned over a year after year after year,
and so we had this conversation about how you can't
keep going down that path like that. You kind of
have to stop the bleeding when it comes to changing
(01:48):
things over, because without consistency, it's really almost impossible to
succeed right at any level in any profession, you need consistency.
And so he and I were standing there having that conversation,
and I think that he had no illusions.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
About the fact that this was not going to be
an easy season.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
I don't think he, you know, thought they were going
to come out and be six to zero at this point.
But I felt from the conversations we had that it
was it would have to be very unlikely for them
to be making a coaching change at this part of
the year. That was the impression I got from our
(02:23):
conversation that this organization was so desperate for to have
consistency that they hadn't had at all those key components
I talked about, the GM spot, the you know, Brinkers knew,
the head coach, the rest of the coaching staff, and
the quarterback that you just couldn't continue to go down
that And so you know, within the last couple hours today,
(02:45):
to hear that they've made that change, now, I say
that it's shocking because when I go back and think
of that conversation, when you look at the record and
how things were sort of laying out. I mean, you
can't ever be shocked in this business, right when when
you're not winning, winning is everything.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
You know that changes can be made.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
I'm just a little surprised that if if you would
have said, hey, Sarah, what do you think this is
going to be in you know, going into this week
of the season, coming off of standing on the side
of the Titans practice field with their president, Did I
think this would unfold this way?
Speaker 3 (03:18):
I really didn't.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
I really didn't, But I think the biggest thing is
is you know, then I go back and I actually
went and looked immediately at Brinker's statement because I'm like, not,
how did we get here?
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Right?
Speaker 5 (03:28):
But this is just obviously not the outcome that anybody wants.
And he talked about in his statement like they're committed
to being patient and having a plan. But then he
also says, and I think this is the biggest caveat
of all of it is that there just wasn't sufficient growth.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
You see this organized.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
And I think that, like I think if they had lost,
but things look differently, there's different ways of losing, right,
I don't think we would have gotten.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Like don't you think the Saints? This is weird to say,
don't you think the Saints are losing in an okay way?
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, I'm saying like, I think there's an okay like.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
You had this now, you know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (04:06):
Yeah, I think I really think he would have been okay,
you just had to show from week to week. But
then when the players are sniping and then when when
I say sniping, you guys reference Jeffrey Simmons saying not
ready when you see Cam, you know, stepping up to
podiums and being as frustrated as he is and some
of the things that he said and Callahan getting frustrated.
It just like, I like, to your point, you can
(04:28):
you can lose because you're not going.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
To always win everything.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
And I think we've seen multiple organizations, you know, Detroit
is one of them where there was losing and there
was pressure and they stuck with it and look at
what they then ascend it to. And that was kind
of the conversation Brinker and I were having, is like,
you just can't keep doing it, But there was enough
obviously inside that building and from what they saw on
the field, that they felt that they needed to make
that change. I am, but I am personally just shocked
(04:55):
when I think of the conversation that I had at
that training camp practice to like here we go, because
it's truly the last thing they wanted. I mean, they
didn't you know, they didn't want that. And then when
you talk about the manner in which you're losing, like,
let's we can go to the Jets and and Aaron Glenn,
but I got to tell you and and I know
I know Judy, you know him well, and we've sort
(05:17):
of had this conversation because we're both in London last week.
I gotta tell you before we've talked about the game yesterday.
When you sit down with him and he's telling us like, hey,
here's the plan and here's what I think, and and
you talk to the players around him, I did not
get any sense of that of players like not believing.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
I think this team fully believes.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
I think you saw a Jets defense that came out
completely different than what we've seen in the rest of
the year.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
The offense, that's another thing, and we can get to
the offense.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
But I I just I don't see Glenn wavering at all.
I'm sort of his messaging on his I gotta te
like when I talked to him, I'm like, I got it.
I believe, like I do believe that that's going to
turn around. And you talk about there's different ways to lose.
They had that game that was there for the taking,
and that's probably the most frustrating thing to the Jets
(06:06):
right now because they're not getting wiped off the map.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
They're certainly not right like they are.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
There are multiple games now that they could have won
and it didn't go their way, and they got to
find ways Judy to change that when it comes down
to the end of the game.
Speaker 6 (06:20):
Well, the most maddening thing about the game yesterday is
the defense played the best it has all season and
the offense played by far the worst they have played
all season. I mean, justin Fields took a significant step back,
and which Aaron Glenn said today when he spoke to
reporters that like this was a step back. He's sticking
(06:43):
with him. He said, like, you can't bench a player
for one bad game. Okay, I would agree with that,
you probably can't, But I mean the offense was just
inept yesterday. You could see, I mean Garrett Wilson, who
we saw him be this frustrated even when Aaron Rodgers
was the quarterback, because the offense was so bad, and
(07:03):
when Zach Wilson was the quarterback, like Garrett Wilson is
going to lose his mind. I mean, he was so
frustrated with that sequence at the end of the first half,
which still makes no sense, in which Aaron Glenn said today,
given the evening to think about it, he would have
approached it differently. He would have tried to hail Mary
at the end of the half, you know, to sort
(07:24):
of concede at the end of the first half, like
it just made no sense. But I do think I
agree with you, Sarah in that I don't sense wavering
among the players that look when I spend time around
them during training camp, I mean, the players were all
in behind him. Now, at some point, you're going to
have to start winning games, and at some point the
(07:47):
players are going to look at justin fields and start
thinking like, if you can't play better. You know, the
players always know.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
When we saw Tyrod and it was not greater in
the year though.
Speaker 6 (07:57):
Correct, that's part of the problem, and I'm true that
is part of Aaron Glenn's thinking is you don't bench
a player after one terrible game. He's had other games
that were not so great, but he did have promising performances.
But also, like, what are you going to right? I mean,
does Aaron Glenn really think that Tyrod Taylor is a
significant enough upgrade. It's a tough This is a rebuilding team.
(08:18):
It is a rebuilding season. I know they haven't wanted
to say that. We all know it though. They got
to start winning some games, but I mean, you know,
let's keep our expectations in check.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Here and here's what I keep thinking of guys as
we get ready to get out here. Dan Campbell was
like one in seven his first year, and they sucked
and they kind of looked a little bit like the
Saints do this year, and they kind of looked a
little bit like the Jets do this year.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
And they were so bad and I was like, not
was that a second year?
Speaker 1 (08:49):
I was either first year or second year, and they
were so bad, and I kept thinking, like, are we
sure this is the right And then people in Detroit
were like, this is the right guy, we promise, And so.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
I draw parallels to them.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And like, one thing I'm trying to figure out and
I assume it's the same thing the Jets people are
trying to figure out, is like which case is that?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Is this Dan Campbell or is this like the Titans.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
And obviously that's something we are going to find out
over the next however many games. So Sarah, final thoughts,
one minute final thoughts.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
I really need to see more offense next week in London.
I mean, I'm out here and score some touchdowns is London.
We got the Jags, we got the Rammed, even.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
The Brons a good game, by the way, that's a good.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
It's a good game. I need some touchdowns. Kurt Warner
needs some touchdowns. He was about to like rip his
hair out, like he just he needs some offense. He
needs some things to happen. Uh. You know, even the
Broncos defense is that good. So let's just again kudos
to that they are that good. While we're talking about
the Jets offense being bad, they are among the best
in the league, if not the best.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
They're outstanding. They did their job.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
The Broncos offense, I mean, the Jets held them in check.
Bonix had one touchdown. So so my overall to wrap
this up, guys, I'm camping out in London.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
I love it here.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
I don't know if I'm ever coming home, but I
do need some offense next.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Week, all right, we'll send some.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Sarah.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Thank you very much, great stuff as always, and enjoy
the rest the insta.
Speaker 7 (10:18):
We'll be right back with more on the inside.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Welcome back to the Insiders podcast version.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
This is part two of part two.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Ian Rappaport here, Judae Batista, Mark Ross joining us once again.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
A lot of great action on the field yesterday, a
lot of fun stuff.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Learned a little bit about some teams. But that's not
what I want to talk about. I want to talk
about Dolphins quarterback Tua tago Iloa, who was at the
podium yesterday and was asked a question that was it
about anything about this and casually mentioned that some teammates
have been skipping or being late to players only meetings, which,
(11:11):
from my understanding, what he means is players only film
sessions like quarterbacks and receivers or defense does film sessions
by themselves.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Players have been skipping that. Now, Mike McDaniel, to the.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Head coach, talked to reporters today and said essentially that
two had chose the wrong forum for those conversations, kind
of insinuating should have been in the locker room.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Mark, you've been in some buildings.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
What do you think about a starting quarterback calling out
his teammates in front of the national media after another loss, Big.
Speaker 8 (11:45):
Van, that was not the right thing to do for two.
You know that's two has had a rough kind of
year this year. Getting in front of the mic set.
It seems like we're talking about him a lot and
saying the wrong things. And look, that's what happens when
you lose and you're really struggling, but your leader has
to be your leader. And being around Eli Anning and
Donald McNabb as our franchise quarterbacks for I don't know,
(12:06):
seventeen and my twenty plus years of the NFL, like
those guys always did and said the right things and
never threw anybody under the bus. And for Tua, have
you been in the locker room and the meeting room
saying this to these guys? Has that happened?
Speaker 7 (12:19):
First?
Speaker 6 (12:20):
That's good, it's gonna say, we don't know. First of all,
as a reporter, I will never tell a player to
stop talking, like, no, keep talking please, But that is
what I was thinking, is how frustrated must he be
to have gotten to the point where he went to
the podium and called out his teammates in front of
everybody there is. I can't imagine there's any chance this
(12:42):
is the first time that that topic has come up
in that locker room or in those meeting rooms.
Speaker 8 (12:49):
Yeah, that'll be the interesting thing to know. But I
don't know if you saw the one quote from the
player who was there at the Hamilton I think his
name was, came out and said, well, actually I was
there for a week and Tua was late to the meeting.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I was supposed to be that.
Speaker 8 (13:01):
So if that is the case where maybe Tua hasn't
said anything and he just felt as if this was
the right way, but he's been hasn't been accountable as well,
then the other players are looking at him. Hey, come on, man,
we're not following you, we're not leading you. You're you know,
you're you're not living up to the state or that
you're supposed to live at. So you know, look, there's
(13:21):
a lot of problems Miami, Mike McDaniels got his issues
and now too.
Speaker 9 (13:24):
It just doesn't seem as if anybody is being Yeah,
I expected I talked to this on Good Morning Football today.
It's it's interesting because there's a lot of different ways
to lead. I don't know that this is leadership, Like
quarterbacks are not always leaders. Sometimes they are, but they're
not always. And I don't know if this is like
how one leads. It feels like it's not.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
So two is sort of trying to be a leader
but not actually being a leader is troubling in itself
to me. But we're about to find out, because this
team is going to go play. They're going to either
show or not. They're going to either play or not.
And if the ANSWER's not, then it's going to be
bad for Mike McDaniel and a lot of people there.
But if the answers yes, Judy, then they're going to
(14:11):
turn this around with some sort of self accountability, and
maybe too it will be the reason why.
Speaker 6 (14:16):
I don't know. Coming out of yesterday and the way
they've lost some of these games, I came away thinking
they're not going to have any choice. Stephen Ross is
not going to have any choice but to make a
lot of changes in that building. It has not worked.
They've tried, they've loaded up with a lot of talent,
a lot of what. It hasn't worked. They got better,
they went to the playoffs, they could not beat the
(14:37):
elite AFC teams.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Or even really any winning teams, and they.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
Seem to have reached a plateau and now they're coming
backwards off the plateau. So it's not working. And he
gave the big extension to Tua. It's not working with him.
I'm sorry to say it's not working with Mike McDaniel
because I like him personally a lot, his style. I
think everybody does. I like I career as a person,
(15:04):
but like it's not working and you've given it a
good long run, but this core group is it's not
going anywhere if anything is coming backwards.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
And I can't I can't.
Speaker 6 (15:15):
Imagine how Steven Ross looks at this and you know,
and thinks he can run it back again.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Yeah, so mark quickly from you before we get out
of here. The Dobblins are going to have to make
a decision as we take a quick little turn from
to it to Mike McDaniel, They're going to have to decide,
just like the Titans decided, is this is this the
guy for us?
Speaker 7 (15:36):
Like?
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Is this the head coach for us?
Speaker 1 (15:39):
What is the most important factor If you're a front
office or you're an owner and you're deciding, like should
we keep Mike McDaniel or any coach that's in a
similar situation, Well.
Speaker 8 (15:48):
Just is it becoming just untenable that he's just such
a distraction that the players aren't showing up and motivated
every day. I mean, the players are just absolutely given
up with Mike Daniel walking in the building or standing
in front of the room. Let's just say, and you
know you have to move on and yo, just taking
it back a few years with the last year is
(16:09):
the Ben mcado with us, but you know that was.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
The whole ELI thing.
Speaker 8 (16:13):
But you know, after that, it was like, oh my goodness,
we just got to remove the distraction before it gets
you know, nobody's just absolutely showing off and doing anything
here at the building.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
All right, awesome stuff as always, Mark, Thank you Judy.
You had no choice but to be here just like
I did. But you did great anyway for Judy or Mark,
for Sarah Walsh, for Steve Weiss who briefly joined us
then pieced out, I am I and Rappaport.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
