Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome back to the Insiders, Tom Pilla, Sero, Judy Matista,
Ian Rappaport, and Mike Garafolo. If you are listening to
the podcast, this is part two of the two part
Monday podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
We do every week.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Doesn't matter what order you listen to them. There's different
subject matter on each one. Stick around for this one,
go back to the first one, whatever you want to do.
For those of you watch us on the NFL channel
on fast streaming platforms, Welcome back for those of us
those of you on YouTube, Yes I did that in
part one and part two. Confused am I watching or
am I part of it? Let's just say it's both.
(00:35):
Let's get into the Baltimore Ravens, who we all knew
coming into Week eight needed a win in the worst way,
and we thought, for a variety of reasons that that
would be involving Lamar Jackson's returny and it did not happen,
despite being listened as a full participant in practice, despite
John Harbass and even back before the buye that he
(00:56):
anticipated Lamar playing against the Bears. But the first sign,
I mean that something was amiss was Saturday morning and
you had a report that Lamar was taking practice squad reps.
Take me through what happens from there and how we
really got to this point of now continuing to speculate
about whether or not Lamar is gonna play this coming
(01:17):
week on Thursday night against the Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, really fascinating, kind of weird situation. So I'm checking
in Saturday morning just to make sure everything's fine. Like
I think, like a lot of people, I assumed Lamar
Jackson was going to play on Sunday, and so I
check in with people who I think would know, and
I say, it's making sure Lamar is good. And the
response I got from one person was like, yeah, like
(01:40):
had a good week, had a good day of practice
on Friday, no issues, ran the scout team And I'm like, okay,
wait what And so then I checked, Yes, Lamar ran
the scout team. I'm like, okay, that seems to be
that he is not playing. So I checked with someone
else and the response I got was he's out and
it's going to be snoop hunting. So I put it
all together there, check with a couple more people, and
(02:02):
then the tweeting that Lamar Jackson ran the scout team
and that was his participation right, And so I tweeted
as an indication I don't know for sure for sure,
but as an indication he's unlikely to play. You guys
both text me. I think Tom might have texted first,
but Mike was on the same page. Hang on, why
(02:22):
was he listed as full? And I say to you
guys privately, well, he's full because he took all his
reps and you say, okay, but that's not what full means.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
And I was interjected really quickly that.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Then there were twenty texts where as my lights just
got turned off back there, want to just go ahead
and turn on my lights on.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
That was a lot of fun, very romantic.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
There were solely twenty texts of you going, what do
you mean he was full? He was taking full practice club.
It's like no QB one you take normal reps. QB
one takes QB one reps. That's literally how this works,
which makes it yeah, it is just it's policy.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
And it became never as I don't know that it's
ever come up like like, I've never at least I've
never thought about it like that, and so then.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
Saying that you should know it. The team knows it's writing.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I should we report on these things, just like we
should know what injuries are like, like honestly, like I
should know, and now I do know in interesting fashion.
So then start to hear like, all right, the Ravens
are going to make a change. They change Lamar's status,
he's limited, he's out, stup, Punley is the starter, and
then plays well enough to win and they are somehow
(03:37):
still alive in what was a really, really impressive absolutely
had to have a victory.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
Yeah, I can't wait to see how the league addresses
this issue with the injury reporting, because especially in the
current climate, I mean the whole, the whole point of
the injury.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Reporting is for gambling purposes, to insulate everything.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
In a week where there was some news about that,
in a week where there was.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
A significant gambling scandal in the headlines, in that climate,
I would expect that the league will be very careful
and does not look kindly on poor injury reporting.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
However it happened, whether it was.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
An innocent mistake some would have you believe, or whether
it was you know, playing around with the injury report,
however it happened. Yeah, it's troubling, and I'm very curious
to see how the league addresses.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
It, Judy, how many.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
Has they've had to addressed it before They've they've done
it before with teams. They have given big finds to
teams that have played around with the jury report.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
I don't know, like correcting it doesn't help.
Speaker 6 (04:52):
It's not like we'll tell our kids they don't get it,
but would tell them, like if you make a mistake,
just just tell them me, and it'd be worse if
you didn't tell me, like that kind of thing. So
it's almost like, well, they addressed it and they changed it,
but it's still like in a week where everything happened,
you're talking about uh, related to gambling and related to
(05:13):
what's happening in the NBA. Like it's too late, it
doesn't all that doesn't matter. How many head coaches have
you covered in.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Your kay whatever, any stories are over, we're back, Yeah, Judy,
how many head coaches have you covered in your career?
Speaker 7 (05:24):
I mean we're talking hundreds right between. Yes, exactly.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
Your experience with head coaches, they tend to know a
lot of things about what's happening in the billboard.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Like just you don't have to answer any of these.
Speaker 7 (05:36):
I'm just speaking out.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Like the notion that's something as important as the injury report.
Speaker 7 (05:42):
Well, that's not me. I don't I don't think like these.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Dudes know what's being served for lunch.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
I did a tour of the facility one time with
Sean Payton, and as Steve Smith and I were station
there for training camp, he gave us an entire like
like where the lighting is in the building, and oh,
the weight room had to be here.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
And wasn't there a story about Sean Payton seeing terrible
fan towels?
Speaker 1 (06:05):
What was that story? And he was like, hold on,
hold on, let's focus here for a secon. Sorry, here,
here's my main question. Okay, because remember this begins with
John Harbaugh going to the podium on Friday and saying, yeah,
Lamar was out there, he was full, right, That's where
full initially came from, and then that's reflected on the report.
My question at a deeper level that goes beyond you
know whatever, if you take it face value, their explanation,
(06:26):
which was, hey, it had never come up before as
an oversight.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
My question is.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
This, If Lamar was taking every rep on the scout team,
what is holding him back from taking every rep in
the game. Now you're coming back from a hamstring It's
an injury that they thought Ian he was going to
be able to return from. John Harbaugh said that publicly,
they do have a short week before Thursday game. There's
(06:50):
a lot of different factors involved. Lamar's on the sideline,
you know, and listen, Snowputley went out and did what
snow Putley does. I know what his record is as
a starter, but it seems like whenever they have a
gotta have it type of game, he's able to go
out and play pretty well. But it's still unusual, and
everything with Lamar is a little bit different. You're never
quite sure if what you would assume is true with
(07:13):
one player is going to apply to Lamar just because
he approaches things in a different way.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
That's worked very welfare.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
But what is your understanding of why he ultimately did
not play in that game, and what if anything that
says about is he actually going to be out there
Thursday night against the Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yeah, so that's a good question, and I knew, I
know there are some people in the building that thought
Lamar was going to play Sunday. There is nothing wrong
with him not playing. We do see this from time
to time a guy. You think a guy is ready,
you say like, hey, the time frame and the vikings
with Jaj McCarthy the same thing. It's like, well, he
(07:46):
could be ready, but he's not. He doesn't feel ready.
So if he doesn't feel ready, then he's just not
going to play well and he's not ready. That is okay.
The expectation game was harder because coming out of going
into the by John, how much as we expect him
to be ready and everyone in the world is like boom,
that means he's playing. He didn't feel ready, he didn't
(08:07):
feel right. I do believe he plays Thursday, but you're
right with Lamar, it's like like it's almost like they
don't ever want to speak with any certainty about him
because they go, hey, it could be it could be
a lot of things. That's just that's life with one
of the most talented players we've seen in a very
long time. It's just part of it.
Speaker 6 (08:25):
You know.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Meanwhile, now that Thursday night game is against the Dolphins
team that I think a lot of people who've been
speculating since probably before the season began about Mike McDaniel's
future added circled. Okay, Thursday night game. If they were
to make a change, it could be around then all
of a sudden, you watched the game yesterday Judy for
the Dolphins, and it's like, that's the team that Mike
McDaniels taking to the playoffs. A couple of times I
(08:47):
was told and I reported it yesterday in one of
our insider segments on game day morning. Everybody said the
way that they challenged him and pushed the tempo and
practice like he looked like the old Tua. You never
know how that's going to carry over to the game.
But one eye swollen shut when he woke up in
all that was the Tua and that was the offense
that we've all been been waiting for.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
I mean, I assume he's going to just have to
wear Advisor forever now, right, Like this is the new thing.
I mean, I again, I was following the scores, you know,
had red zone on my computer while we were watching
the Eagles game, and I was like, where where's this
coming from? I mean, that was what the Dolphins were
supposed to look like and haven't looked like at all
(09:30):
this season. I mean, and now you wonder if they
can they replicate this. I mean, did something did they
just turn a corner? Is this the Dolphins now? And
they've gotten past whatever was happening and now Tua is fine?
I mean they turned the ball over right, tu ahead?
How many turnovers in the last two with something we did?
Six or something insane? And then he plays like this
(09:52):
game of the year again. My only question watching all
of it is now is that the Dolphins and going forward?
Speaker 4 (09:59):
Is that the Dolphins team that it's going to be?
Because you know, that's a pretty good Dolphins game.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
They're two and six.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
They got their work cut out for him to try
to claw their way back into this thing. But again,
if you're if you're evaluating the programmingan like as you
reported a month or so ago, Steven Ross is and
he's a courseman and an owner who's shown a lot
of patience, like this is what you want to see.
Remember they don't have Tyreek right now. I mean that
was a pretty massive loss for the team. They've had
all kinds of moving parts on the offensive line. You're
(10:27):
just going, all right, our guys still bought in. It
was very apparent they were yesterday. And can the quarterback
get playing better again? That's two for two at least
for one game in Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Yeah, they are the players bought in is going to
do a lot of work here because you know, you're right,
like I reported that seymar Ross likes Mike McDaniel and
really isn't no hurry to fire him if he fires
him at all. We don't know how it's going to be.
But are the players playing? And I was talking to
someone who's in the locker room not this week, but
last week after they lost that was the Browns game, right, yeah,
(10:58):
and was like I saw a players caring. I saw
players distraught, frustrated feelings like they were not checked out.
It mattered to them. And I know they sucked and lost,
but like the way the players responded in the locker
room that and then the way they respond on the
field like that sort of tells you what they think
about Mike McDaniels. So I would say, like, the people
(11:20):
I've been speaking with are thankfully right that the players
care and are still playing for a Mike. And if
that's going to continue, then maybe they can turn around.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
We'll see.
Speaker 6 (11:29):
I'm more the other side of this game is not fascinating,
but it's confusing, Like I can't figure out the Falcons.
I have no idea what they are. I have no
idea who they are. I don't know why. Some they
show up they look fantastic, especially on defense, and in
some weeks they just absolutely do what they did yesterday,
which is I can come up with a bunch of
things I don't want to repeat and say, because this
(11:49):
is still a family program, So I.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Like, you want consistency. The highser great.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
The lows are just so incredibly low, and it just
feels like it's just ping ponging back and forth. It's
not like two or three good, two or three bad
back to two or three good.
Speaker 7 (12:05):
It's like one one one one one one.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
And I understand that was uh Michael Pennix didn't play
in this game, and I guess I was disappointed that
Kirk Cousins didn't do more and this outfense didn't do
more with Kirk Cousins in there.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
But like I know Drake London too, By the way,
what's that no, Drake London.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Drake London as which was another injury report switch on
the on the day before the game.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Still got to be a one in sixteen coming in
at home in your building.
Speaker 7 (12:29):
If you think you're a playoffs.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Four from the insiders, after this, would you look at
(12:52):
the NFC as a whole right now? There are more
question marks than it feels like we have known study
case in point yet yesterday the Cowboys, much like Mike
was just talking about the Falcons, have been this drastically
up and down operation. The offense most weeks has been
there this season. It was not yesterday in Denver. The
defense once again was just horrible. I know, they don't
(13:14):
have pass rushers, they don't have corners. Those are two
pretty important positions that you need to have to be functional.
But still against the Broncos offense that had really struggled
to get going, especially early in games, what forty four
points yesterday? There's a lot of interesting things in questions
for Jerry Jones and company to sift through in terms
of what is this team and is whatever we do
(13:36):
with the trade deadline actually going to.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
Make a difference here in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 5 (13:40):
Yeah, because let's be real, they're not one player away, right,
even one really really good player away.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
They're not.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
They need multiple things. I mean, that was a I thought,
surprisingly bad performance for the Cowboys. I thought they would
be closer to the Broncos, especially because we had seen
the Broncos struggle. I mean, the Broncos struggled to score against.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
The Jets, right, like yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
Just to give you an yeah, see against multiple teams,
but like recently against the Jets. They won that game,
but it was a really low scoring game. And then
there's just this offensive explosion and if you take a
step back, they have to look at the Cowboys and be.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Like, what, I mean, what was that?
Speaker 5 (14:20):
And at the same time, you're right, I mean their
offense was not a Dack was certainly not at the
level that he has been all season. I think it's
going to be really interesting to see what they're what
they do at the trade upline, because again, they can't
look at that team and think like, well, if we
just go get one big piece, you.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Know, we're in the NFC mix. They're not.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
Yeah, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
I don't really feel like they I mean, we'll see
what they do. But I know what Jerry said publicly,
Internally with the Cowboys, I know they're looking. I don't
really get the sense that they're like actually, I mean, yeah,
something's gonna happen now, I'm sure, But like I don't
get the sense that they're really in on anything major
at all. Everything I get is kind of like, yeah,
no momentum, So we'll see if they actually add anything.
(15:04):
I was talking to someone about bo Nicks and this
person was like, yeah, you know what if bo Nicks
is an MVP candidate, and I was kind of like,
I mean, Dak Prescott would be literally the MVP if
he got to play against his own defense all the time, Like,
that's he would be. He throwed for six thousand yards.
I mean it's the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens also make an unbelievable catches
for him all the time. Dak's played really well, but
he's got two great receivers. Like, I don't know that
your average fan is tuning into a Broncos game and
can name three of the other offensive skill guys on
the Betrayer.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
That's probably true. I mean, bo Nix is right, He's
he's been up and down. That did play well Sunday.
The main thing I wondered about the Cowboys, and this
is something that will never will never escape, is like
how much better would they be if they had Micah.
I maintained that the Cowboys trade for Mike, trade of Micah,
assuming they use it to get a game changing, franchise
(15:58):
changing player or play, maybe a quarterback Parsons well, or
maybe a course, you know, Dak Prescott's in his thirties,
maybe a quarterback that would be that would be worth it,
I think, But like what would they be with Michael Parsons.
How many like you know, baseball does war, Like what
would Michael Parsons war be on the Cowboys? Like, We're
never going to know, but it's what I think about
(16:19):
all the time.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Micah Parsons last night, Mike who I just wanted to
see and I haven't gone back in three yet, just
like the next gen stats of where he was coming
from on some of those plays when he's rushing off
the offensive left edge and Aaron Rodgers is completely out
almost to the right sideline and Micah is bearing down
on him. Not that Aaron's surprise, he once was, but
it's it's like a it's like a Jurassic Park film,
(16:42):
you know, where you're just like that velociraptor is going
to catch up with that dude. Like That's that's what
it's like to watch Micah when he's on like that.
Speaker 7 (16:48):
Yeah, he had he had to play like that.
Speaker 6 (16:50):
Rogers did get rid of the ball if I recall correctly,
but he had to play like that, which reminded me
of early similar to week one when he was chasing
Jery Goff and somebody had posted in that it's like
the National Geographic videos where you know, because.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Clions getting the or Jurassic Park, which is a work
of fiction.
Speaker 7 (17:08):
You know, what do you like? You like the fact
or fiction a non fiction fiction? It could be true?
What could be true? Jurassic Park?
Speaker 2 (17:16):
And I'll re recreate dinosaurs from We're going to need
a whole episode podcast episode. We were talking about Aaron Rodgers.
I got it.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I got into something weird, alright, dinosaurs?
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Is he one of those I don't.
Speaker 7 (17:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
I just so manybody would buy into I would love
your Aaron's answer to could you actually do a real
Jurassic Park.
Speaker 7 (17:34):
I'm just saying, if.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Our dinosaurs real would be a great question to ask.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
You know, it's not going to be a yes or
no answer. You know you're going to get into all right.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Jonathan Taylor is real and he is spectacular. Mike I
tweeted something yesterday, just saying, you know, he's he's stacking
the offensive Player of the Year resume.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
I think every response to that was what about m
v P.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
I'll believe another running back wins MVP when I see it.
But what he's doing, the pace that he is on
and the way that he is pacing.
Speaker 8 (18:01):
What right now is like a record breaking historic offense
like you're seeing the two thousand and seven Patriots and
the twenty twenty five Colts on like the same graphic.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
Who the wall was.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Predicting this from Jonathan Taylor along with Daniel Jones, huge
part of it.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
I almost answered those because I saw a few of
them from you know, if you follow the person, so
you do see the replies come in. I saw a
few of them to you, why not MVP? And I
almost replied for you, the answer being he doesn't throw
enough passes.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
That's why didn't win it last year? Can't win it?
Is Jonathan Taylor gonna win? I don't know, maybe right,
I'm sure it's an uphill.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
It's an uphill.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
I'm it's nice of you to say maybe, but the
answer is no, and you know that the answer is no.
I don't have a vote yeah, no, there they're playing it.
I've maintained this about Daniel Jones. When everything is right
around him, he's he's really good for that role. And
everything is right around him right now, and they're also
getting help from the defense.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
I had somebody else the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Dude, my uncle asked me the other day.
Speaker 6 (19:01):
He's like, why can't the Bengals stop the Jets or
why couldn't they? I said, I'll tell you why. Over
investment on offense, and they had a perfectly good to
great defensive coordinator and they let them out of the building.
That's what happens, and now the Colts are reaping the benefits.
Speaker 7 (19:15):
So good for them.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Colts feel like I've covered a few Eagles teams over
the years where they almost play themselves into their record.
Is the way that I've said it, like all of
a sudden, they turn around and go we're ten and one,
like oh, we must be that good, and they start
to play like they're that good.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
The Colts feel like that.
Speaker 6 (19:32):
To me, I'm not This is gonna almost sound backwards
like I'm taking something away from them, But no, they're
playing with more confidence the more they win, and you
can see that with them.
Speaker 7 (19:42):
You can see that that continues to grow.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
And now all of a sudden, when you go into
a postseason or when you go into a stretch where
you've got to play tough teams, you're going to be
playing that much better because you've built up that confidence
by winning games.
Speaker 7 (19:52):
That's what they feel like to me.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Here's the other question, now that Ke's being raised because
the Colts have the best record in the NFL, you
see the Chiefs on to come, you see a team
like the Bills yesterday get back on track. At what
point do we reach a world where people are actually
Judy going to say the Colts are the best team
in the AFC or the Colts are the favorite.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
I still don't have a game.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
They have a game against the Chiefs coming up in
a couple of.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Weeks, right, that will help do But the Bills tam
saw yesterday against the Panthers. Is anybody taking the Colts
against that Bills team that coming off the buy yesterday
looked like more a lot more like the Bills that
we're accustomed to see.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
Probably not, but I think you probably have to see
more consistency from the Bills before you're convinced that the
Bills are really the Bills.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
To me, that game against.
Speaker 5 (20:38):
The Chiefs, the Colts Chiefs game in two weeks, We'll
tell us an awful lot because we know what the
Chiefs are, right, we know where the Chiefs are going
to be, We know what they've got that's going to
tell you how the Colts measure up.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
And you're muted. I think he even broke his microphone.
Did you see what he mute? An hour?
Speaker 7 (20:56):
Now you go.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
Now you're back.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
We were all washing whenever you dumped it, and then
we're trying to figure out what you did.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
So what I did was I was wildly gesticulating and
I hit hit a button and I was like, did
I just meet myself? But you I didn't want to
talk because you couldn't tell. So I was like, I'm
just gonna wait, and if I talk and you can't
hear me, I guess I'm muted. And I was, in
fact muted.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
U gesticulating and get there.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
I had a report on Sunday about the Colts wanting
to lock in Daniel Jones to a long term extension
after the season, and it was so obvious to me.
I also didn't say anything. Now it. You know, did
well online, so go me. But it's amazing that we
got to this point where it is obvious that Daniel
Jones is going to sign with the Colts and be
(21:44):
with them long term. It's amazing because of all it means.
It means Anthony Richardson not the franchise quarterback, it means
Daniel Jones has played his way into huge money. It
means he's a bona fide starter. And these things are
so obvious now that I almost didn't say anything. And
that is the crazy thing of the whole NFL season.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
That's what I mean. That's it's all true, and it's amazing,
and Daniel Jones is a good guy and I'm happy
for him, and it's an amazing season.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
With the Actually the craziest thing of the NFL season,
I saw this online Curly or Say Gordon, who is
the owner of the team now, the eldest sister or
the eldest daughter of Jim Mersey has been on the
sideline and has been all season. And she was seen
yesterday like taking notes in a little notebook. Right she's
writing whatever she's writing down. Who knows, And at the
(22:33):
beginning of the season. When she first took over, people
were like, oh my god, this is ridiculous. An owner like,
what a joke this is going to be. This is
an absolute farce. She shouldn't be down there and now.
Literally the comment to her writing notes was, look at
how many bad owners we have in the NFL. More
owners should be doing this. She's on top of things,
she's taking notes on what and I was like, there
(22:55):
you go. That is NFL fandom in a nutshell right.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
In credit to Carly, this is not a process that
started this year. She spent years with scouts and understanding
every aspect of the football operation and how they view
players in evaluation and coaching. She was ready for that moment.
We all, of course wish that moment had not come
so soon, But it's a pretty fun story right now
