Speaker 1 (00:05):
Another training Camp quad Box Inside Training Camp Live might
be over, but the Insiders is just beginning. Max Crosby
and the Raiders on the field in Coasta Mesa, California. Before,
as Antonio Pierce told Mike Garrifalo, They're gonna have a
walk through on the beach because why not. Egan Minnesota
all the quarterbacks. We'll see winds up coming out on
(00:26):
top of that competition for the Vikings, Lamar Jackson and
the Ravens out there at Owens Mills and here in Renton, Washington.
Geno Smith, the Seahawks and me Welcome inside with the Insiders,
presented by a Rocket Mortgage alongside Mike Grifalo, who again
is in Coasta Mesa. I am Tom Pellisero. We got
(00:48):
tons to get into during the course of this show.
Seahawks coach Mike McDonald is going to join this show
live later on today. We will talk about some of
the backup quarterbacks getting their opportunity in the preseason opener,
some of the implications of that on some of these competitions.
Josh Allen, the Bill's quarterback, asked today whether he misses
(01:08):
Stefan Diggs. His answer might surprise you. Just a little
tiny bit, and we will hear from Max Crosby, who
sat down with Mike just a little bit ago. But
we're almost the preseason time, folks.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
It all starts out Thursday night on NFL Network continues
with twenty one live games throughout the week, including the
one that will evolve this guy, Number fifteen, Patrick Mahomes
and the Kansas City chiefs Andy Reid says that Patrick
Mahomes will play the first quarter on Saturday against the Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Your thoughts, Patrick, My thoughts are It was funny we
were talking about this, I think before we came on
the air with Mike Robin with Gerald McCoy who was
here with me, and I don't know if you guys
got into it on the air at all, but Mike
rob was saying, and that's why they're the two time
defending champions.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
I mean a lot of traditional folks believe that you
gotta play football to get better at football.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
Mike Tomlin's another one.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Give us an opportunity to sharpen our skills before we
get to the regular season.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
I'm gonna take advantage.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Of it, Andy Reid, being one of those guys Patrick
Mahomes and those guys are bought in too. It's not like,
oh man, we gotta go like the Chiefs are good
with going out there playing football. Sure there's a risk
of injury, but the upside in Andy Reid's mind is
to make sure that these guys are ready to go
for the start of the regular season, for the start
of another title defense.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
And this is the way he's gonna do.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
It all right time now for Built for Success presented
by Rocket Mortgage. Sometimes you know, we have to stretch
it a little bit on Built for Success. The Chiefs
have won the last two Super Bowls, not so much.
They're always built for success. Have they actually gotten faster
through the course of this offseason. Well, they added Xavier Worthy.
There's a four to two one forty Hollywood Brown. Most
(02:54):
recently of the Cardinals, obviously Isaiah pachuck O, Rashi Rice.
We know those guys can burn Soakin Caadarius Toad. We
don't even have them all on the list here, but
certainly the Chiefs, mike one of the fastest teams in
the NFL. They'll be opening up not too long from now,
less than four weeks away against the Ravens. In the
regular season opener. We will not see, however, that guy
(03:16):
Lamar Jackson in the preseason opener, at least, coach John
Harbaughs said today Lamar not going to play this weekend
against the Eagles. Wilson will not see Derrick Henry, not
just this week, but throughout the entire preseason, Harbaugh saying,
Derrick Henry, they are going to get serve the veteran
running back. We'll see him for the first time September
(03:37):
fifth against the Chiefs. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the AFC North,
the Steelers will have Justin Fields out there as the
starter for the first preseason game. Makes a lot of
sense because Russell Wilson, you see him there. He's got
the baseball cap on. Still has not gotten work in
team drills. Optimism that's going to ramp up here soon.
But Justin Fields now we're in number two in Pittsburgh,
(03:58):
has been getting the bulk of the reps throughout the preseason.
He'll start Friday's preseason opener against the Texans.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Way is that Mike.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
I think he just comes to compete every day. He's
got an awesome competitive spirit. We got a competitive environment,
and it seems like he's enjoying it. He's doing a
really good job of acclimating himself to it and his
teammates and letting his talent show.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
At what point do you become concerned about the lack
of reps from us in the first or out.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
I'm not.
Speaker 7 (04:29):
I always want to play.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I mean, I think anytime you get the strap on
the pads, it's.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
You know, it's a blessing.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
I know, I remember, you know, if it's preseason, if
his regular season officer, which matters a lot, and postseason more.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Importantly, Russell Wilson has listed as number one on the
Pittsburgh depth chart. Kirk Cousins, of course, listened number one
on the Atlanta depth chart, but Raheem Morris has already
said not intending to play Kirk Cousins at least in
these first couple of preseason games. So that guy that's
surprised number eight overall pick, Michael Pennix Junior, will get
his opportunit tunity Friday against the Dolphins. It's always interesting
(05:04):
to see as we bring back Mike Garrofolo here some
of the approaches the different teams take. I think we're
actually seeing a swing back a little bit to seeing
some of the teams playing their starters more. Zach Taylor,
among others, is gonna play the Bengals starters a little
bit here in the preseason. But for Michael Penix getting
in there and have an opportunity here, Mike, this is
(05:25):
one of those steps in the process we're talking about
way back in April, which is if this guy looks
good in the preseason, definitely continues to shift the dynamic
a little bit as we get toward the real games.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Folks in Atlanta Falcons don't seem to be concerned about
that at all. Their primary objective is to make sure
that Michael Pennix gets out there and get some experience.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
They're not saying, well, if he really.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Goes out and lights it up, people are gonna be
clamoring for him to start, and there might be no
The only time I think that's a concern is if
it gets into the regular season and then Kirk.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Cousins starts to struggle a little bit.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
So right now, the primary focus is we've got a
number eighth all picked that we expect to at some
point be.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Our quarterback of the future.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Got to get him out there, got to get as
much as we possibly can, again eliminating the risk of
injury as much as you possibly can, to get him
out there and start to get him some looks and
see what he can do on.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
A football field.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Of course, it's gonna be fodder for the likes of
us and maybe some fans who want to see perhaps
him get out there at some point during the regular season,
but again that's going to be mostly up to Kirk
Cousins and how he plays once we get to week
one and beyond.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Mike, you and I also both went through Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
We're at Steelers camp here.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Russell Wilson again severed that calf strain during the conditioning drill.
He's been pushing to practice. He wants to be out there.
They haven't fully cut him loose just yet. And meanwhile,
justin fields, from everything I've heard, he's shown some of
those times where hey, you know, you'd like the ball
to come out, some of those shortcomings Chicago. But he's
also a human highlight reel and they've caught that part too.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
And he's gonna I've been convinced for quite some time
he's going to put that on display in the preseason
because even if he doesn't do it with his arms,
he could do it with his legs.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
He's a wow guy. You know.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Back when he was the quarterback of the Bears, I
remember multiple you know, coaches and staff members standing on
the sideline watching him, and they have seen sensational dual
threat quarterbacks over the years, and I multiple ones said
that guy's unlike anybody else the way that he's able
to do things on the field. So he's gonna do it,
There's no doubt about it. And Mike Tomlin's saying he's
(07:21):
not concerned about the lack of reps for Russell Wilson.
Wilson should be concerned about the lack of reps for
Russell Wilson because Fields has certainly opened eyes there and
shown his ability to take coaching. That's been a big
thing there in Pittsburgh from what I understand. So into
the preseason we go with a chance for Justin Fields.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
What is happening there?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Who is yelling Tom we get into the right of
the practice.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Mike training camps still going on.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
It's a football prectice. Yeah, we got nothing. They left
us hours feisty.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
We've had a few, Yeah, exactly, You're sitting alone the
Raiders is literally left tout and left you sitting there
by the side of the practice field. Now, Broncos coach
Sean Payton said, we'll also see his starter in the
preseason opener. Sixteen to eighteen snaps is what Peyton said,
which probably translates to depending how well they do two
or three series on the field. Bo Nicks though not
a starter, he's not even listed as the number two.
(08:12):
It's Jared Sidham, then Zach Wilson, then Bo Knicks. Although, Mike,
based on my visit to the Broncos camp, based on
everything that we have seen and heard so far, it
certainly seems like this is a just an initial depth
chart here as we head toward the regular season.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Sean Payton feels to me like the kind of a
guy who would use it. Oh, moving on, all right,
but he feels like you used that depth chart to
kind of motivate some guys.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Anyway, Eagles Ravens.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Go about the Eagles, Mike, we've had Nick Sirianni undecided
if the starts will play in the preseason open a
Friday against the Ravens. I believe Nick Sirianni has actually
given a dissertation on this before about anytime he says
that he's undecided on something, he's made up his mind.
He's just not going to tell you. I would imagine
he's got a pretty clear view in him his mind
(09:00):
of exactly what he wants to do. Here was Jalen
Hurts earlier today asked about his relationship with Nick Siriann, you.
Speaker 8 (09:08):
Have reports and you have rumors, and then you have reality.
And you know, we're in reality right now and got
different people doing different things, and we have different responsibilities
in that natural nature. But ultimately we're just attacking the
day by day, you know. And his team is putting
the best for forward and effort and intensity, and it's
(09:28):
really been a team and being together, you know. And
that's been my whole entire message, this whole entire training
camp and this whole offseason.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Happy birthday to Jalen Hurts twenty six years old today
his present talking about not getting along maybe with his
head coach last season. Mike, you're around that Eagles team
a lot. This has been something that's been speculated upon.
It's been the undercurrent of things throughout the course of
really since things came apart and everyone was searching for
nansis of exactly what happened to your knowledge, Where do
(09:57):
we stand right now and how are those two meshit?
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Those two have tried to reset the table.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Eagles have tried to reset the table on a lot
of fronts this training camp, in this offseason. And you
could say that, yes, there was some friction there last year,
but it's all about how you frame it right, because
I remember even after the one game that they won
late in the season was that game against the Giants
on Christmas, and going into that locker room, that was
the losingest winning locker room I have ever experienced in
(10:25):
my life. No one was happy, no one was celebrating.
In fact, we put an interview requests at the end
of the game and they were like, Nah, this guy's
not gonna talk. This guy's not gonna talk, he's not
gonna want to do it. I was like, you just
won the game, yeah, but they're gonna feel like we lost.
And it's exactly the scene that I saw in the
locker room afterward. And so in talking to folks there
when I was there during training camp just about a
(10:46):
week and a half ago, they talked about the Super
Bowl hangover, and I go.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
What Super Bowl hangover? You started? What ten and one?
Speaker 3 (10:53):
You came out of the gate flying, And they said, yeah,
but we underestimated how much of that hungover the team
for the entire sea, Like even late in the season,
it was there. Everything was framed by the year before.
So there was definitely some feelings amongst and not just
Jalen Hurts, but you know, players toward the coaching staff
in general. So by hiring Keller Moore and by bringing
(11:14):
Vicvango on the defensive side, they've hoped they've cured the
issues from a coaching staff, an entire coaching staff issue
toward the entire locker room. So Jalen Hurts and Nick
Sirianni trying to reset the table.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Hurts also trying.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
To be a little lighter, not as serious all the time,
because I think that was a huge factor with him
toward the entire coaching staff last year.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
It all rolls forward in the calendar to twenty twenty four.
You know why, Mike, because as we keep saying, football
is back, and you can catch every single preseason game
right here on NFL Network and NFL Plus throughout the
course of this preseason Brandon and I you look, I'm pretty
(11:55):
confident we're not going to see in the preseason. The
real question, Mike is the next time we see him
in a uniform, which uniform is it.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Brandon Ayuk clearly has a destination in mind. We can
tell by the way that this thing has played out,
because you know, the Browns were flirting in the Patriots.
We're flirting the Patriots. We're willing to go huge with
that contract over that thirty thirty million dollar mark that
really has been only reserved for Justin Jefferson to this point.
So they were gonna go there, and Brandon Ayuk doesn't
(12:25):
seem like he was interested in heading there. So you know,
clearly the Steelers, we see the Browns on there, but
clearly the Steelers are Ayuk's intended destination. But the Niners
and the Steelers have to come to win agreement on
a trade compensation first, and then the contract will fall
into place. It'll be for less than what the Patriots
we're gonna offer. I think no matter where he winds up,
(12:46):
his next deal is going to be for less than
what the Patriots are offering. So it was about more
than just the money for Brandon Ayuk, and when this
is all said and done, I'd love to hear We'll
see how truthful he wants to get, but I'd love
to hear Brandon Ayuk's take on the whole situation, including
San Francisco, where at some point he would have been open,
at some point relatively recently, would have been open to
a long term extensions.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Has not seen that that's the case right now.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Well, And if Brandon a yukuz indeed gonna get his
way and be a Pittsburgh Steeler, at some point the
forty nine ers have to accept the offer in Miners Sandy,
as there have been.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Negotiations through the course of.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
The week here, that's really the last step in the
entire process. When will that happen? Will it happen? Stay
tuned right here on the Insiders. Did I mention that
football is back?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Hold on one second, Mike, We're gonna get there. How
about first look at all these preseason games, every one
of these games available on NFL Network, also streaming on
NFL Plus twenty one Live games. It's time for football.
All starts tomorrow night on NFL Network. Blackout restrictions apply.
Also streaming on NFL Plus. You're just gonna need a subscription.
(13:57):
Max Crosby out there in Costa Mesa before everybody bailed
on Mike Garofolo, what does he have to say about
this Raiders team and their expectations in a really tough division.
We'll ask him, Oh, Mike will Right after this on
the Insiders presented by Rocket Mortgage, the NFL came down
(14:20):
hard on the Giants and the Lions, finding them two
hundred thousand dollars as an organization eats for the series
of fights that broke out during the joint practices over
the past couple of days. Welcome back to the Insiders
presented by Rocket Mortgage. It's Tom Pellisero, it is Mike Garrifolo. Mike,
we know that there has been in the past some
(14:42):
levels of discipline in terms of maybe the league leaning
on the teams that, hey, somebody takes off their helmet
and swings it at a guy. You might need to
find him on this. There's rules under the Collected Bargaining
Agreement who can and can't be fined for things. The
NFL making this statement and doing so publicly not that
long after this, that's a memo saying stop with the
joint practice fights. This is a seems to me to
(15:04):
be a very specific indication here the leagues in US
and saying, if you can't control these joint practices, we
may not be able to have these joint practices anymore.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
That's a great point, and that's what they're trying to
make clear. I mean, the fact that this was confirmed
and put out publicly lets you know that the NFL
is letting the fans know, letting the players know, letting
the teams know that they don't want to tolerate this
kind of behavior. It's dangerous, someone could get hurt. And
it's about practicing together to get the best possible football
(15:35):
production that you can get. I mean, I've talked to
a couple of teams about joint practices that are doing
it for the first time and they say, well, we
don't quite know what to expect, and I say, well,
sometimes it depends on what the coaches are are setting
a tone, like Mike Tomlin and Sean McDermott the Bills
and the Steelers are having one coming up, and it's like,
you guarantee there won't be a fight at that one
(15:55):
right there, and so this one broke out the other day.
It was multiple fights over multiple days.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
The NFL is.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Saying, well, the organizations are liable for this because it
keeps breaking out. You've got to stop it. You got
to nip it in the bud. And that did not
happen here to the NFL's liking. So look for more
of this going forward if you've got multiple fights breaking
out and coaches and whoever else not doing enough to
maybe keep this stuff in line.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Speaking of discipline, the NC DOUBLEA today handed down discipline
to former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, now the head coach
of the Los Angeles Chargers, issuing penalties that included what's
knows a four year show caused penalty, including a one
year suspension that Harbaugh, if he ever did go back
to college football, would have to serve if it came
(16:41):
in the next four years. This is related to violations
and what the NC DOUBLEA deemed to be unethical conduct
during the COVID nineteen recruiting dead period. It involved inducements,
it involved a lot of different stuff. It's a lengthy
type of a statement here. This again not involved the
alleged sign stealing that occurred last season, allegedly involving the
(17:06):
University of Michigan and one of their staffers, Connor. Stallion's
Jim Harbaugh, speaking to reporters yesterday, issued what can only
be defined as a blanket denial.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
Never lie, never cheat, never steal. I was raised with
that lesson. I have raised my family on that lesson.
I have preached that lesson to the teams that I've coached.
No one's perfect. If you stumble, you apologize, and you
(17:37):
make it right. Today I do not apologize. I did
not participate, was not aware nor complicit in those set allegations.
So for me, it's back to work and attacking with
an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
We know we're talking of Bobster.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
Crosby is so cos mother Harold brought down.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Waxing down?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Why the condor?
Speaker 7 (18:09):
Yes, one of them games?
Speaker 8 (18:14):
Look Cosby?
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Why we got a game boy, Max Crosbie.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
You know what makes Max Crosby great?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Well, a lot of things make Max Crosby great, but
it's the ability or the desire to talk to guys
like Gerald McCoy, our colleague.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
At NFL Network, and pick up some pointers.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Christian Wilkins as well, talking to McCoy and saying, what
need a little bit.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
More tutorials here on what to do.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I mean, these are accomplished guys, and yet they're still
picking the brain of one of the great defensive tackles
in recent NFL history. So that was happening shortly after
Crosbie set with us. To have a conversation with Gerald
and myself, Max Crosby, we were told it was a
light practice today, fully taped up sleeve, sweating out of breath.
(19:02):
There's no such thing as I like practice for you,
isn't there?
Speaker 9 (19:05):
No?
Speaker 7 (19:05):
No, you know, it's every day. Me and Jeral talked
about it since day one. You know. He told me
something that stuck with me forever. He said, no matter
what system you're in, no matter where you're at, the
great ones they're great regardless. So that's something I lived
by and every single day I'm coming out here with
a purpose and be the best in the world. So
trying to push everybody you know, to get to that level.
And it's spend a great training camp so far.
Speaker 10 (19:27):
And when I was talked when I first started doing
this media thing is you never correct your colleagues on air.
Speaker 7 (19:32):
But Mike, I gotta do it.
Speaker 10 (19:34):
We're not sitting here with Max Krisby. We're sitting here
with the Max Krusby, the guy especially to me. So Max,
every time a new accolade comes out for you, you
always say do.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Speaker 10 (19:51):
What does that mean to you? And what does that
mean when people see you? What is driving you to
always more? You were ranked the top ten player voted
on Bottle Players, a Defensive Player of the Year finalist.
Speaker 5 (20:02):
What does more mean for Max Grisby?
Speaker 7 (20:05):
For me, it just means that I know I'm not
at my best yet, and that's what pushed me every
single day. My goal is not to you know, have
a short little run and be a really good player
for a little, you know, amount of time. I want
to be iconic in this game. I want to be
somebody that they look back and say, that's how the
position was played. So I have a ton of work
to do, and like you said, like I've made a
couple of second team All Pros and made a couple
(20:26):
of things like that, but that's that's my first team.
That's not Defensive Player of the Year. I haven't done
that yet, and I haven't won much, you know what
I mean? I've been to the playoffs one year and
it was with you. So for me, I want to win.
That's that's number one most important and number two to
get my team the best chance to win. I gotta
I gotta be the best version of myself. And I
feel like there's nobody doing what I'm doing and I'm
only getting better. So that's why I'm always saying more
(20:47):
is required, and I put it on everything I do.
And you know, for me, I like this year, I
put pound for pound, like regardless of the position, want
to be the best in the world. So that's that's
what pushes me.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
After last season, a lot of folks saw what Antonio
Appears did his interim coach and maybe say, well, that
was a cute little story.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
Made them fun down the stretch here.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Yeah, but you the Max Crosby, Yeah, there we go. Uh,
we're very vocal about we've got to this is the guy. Yea,
he should get the permanent job. He did get the
permanent job. We are now halfway through training camp. You
had the whole spring. Do you feel even more certain
that this was the right guy for the job for
the Raiders right now?
Speaker 7 (21:23):
You know, we haven't done anything yet. To be completely honest,
we haven't won yet, and that's that's all that matters.
That's what my focus is, That's what his focus is.
That's what this whole team is is focus on. You know,
there's a lot of outside noise, a lot of people saying,
you know, well, Max shouldn't have said this, he's a
player whatever. You know, people have their own opinions. AP
is very vocal about what we're trying to do, so
people can say whatever they want until we do it,
(21:44):
that's all that matters. The Chiefs have won the division
multiple times in a row, so we know what. You know,
everybody knows that. You know, we we got to get
past them and all the other teams in the division
and take care of the games where you know we're
supposed to do so. At the end of the day,
it's literally one game at a time, one practice at
a time, and and just focus on that one percent
improvement across the board.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Thank you to the Max Crosby for joining the Insiders.
Coming up on the Insiders, the Josh Allen asked about
does he miss Stefan Diggs.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Stay tuned for his answer.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Welcome Back to the Insiders, presented by a rocket mortgage
to upstate New York. We go there, we see the
Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen always some great expectations on his shoulders.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
And more so this year. No Stefan Diggs.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
Gonna have to find a rhythm with some of the
veterans that they've added to that receiver corps. Alan asked
about no digs and what it means for that receiving
cor Here's what he had to say.
Speaker 11 (22:47):
Steph's a great player and what he brought to this
team was was special. So miss is is? I don't
know if i'd say miss You know, he was a
guy that was reliable you could and you can look to.
He's gonna have the juice each and every day. I'm
sure he's bringing over there in Houston. So definitely, yeah,
you can't say that you don't miss that. But I
(23:08):
am very happy with what we got going on here
and how hard the guys have been working. And I mean,
I'm very comfortable with the guys that we've brought in.
And it's no secret. You know, stuff was an all
pro here and he's got the stats to back it up.
You know, each year he had one hundred plus catches
and a thousand plus yards and that's a heavy workload
for someone to come and fill those shoes. And I
understand that the guys in that room understand that. But
(23:30):
at the same time, the approach that these guys have
had of working hard and putting their head down, and
you know, when they get the ball, they get the ball,
and when they don't, they're doing everything they can to
help somebody else get the ball and break them free.
So you know, well, I guess we'll find out.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
That brings back one of our favorite segments. After I ripped.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Through this full screen, Josh Allen Harry is by his
targeted receiver. You could see the production when he throws
to Diggs as opposed to those other current Buffalo team. Obviously,
the numbers in the right gonna go up this year
with no digs, which leads us back to one of
our favorite segments. It's called inside the Drama. Thought we
(24:10):
had a full screen for that one, dun dund Inside
the Drama. As you can see, I am hosting the
show right now. We've got some technical difficulties out there
in Seattle. Tom Pellisero does not have a monitor, so
he can't see what is happening here, So I will
be the one driving the bus here for a little bit.
Speaker 4 (24:26):
He'll see that one later.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Tom, Let's go inside the drama here, or maybe there
is no drama. Your thoughts on what Josh Allen had
to say about Stefan Diggs no longer being a member
of the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Well, what's Josh Allen really supposed to say? I think
is the bottom line here. He's got to put his
faith behind these guys because he's playing now with Keon
Coleman and Mack Hollins and different receivers than he's had
in the past. I asked our research department and Jack
Andreid to look up how many times a receivers had
four consecutive one hundred catch seasons and then left the team,
(24:57):
and how the quarterback did what I said in our
converage call, It can't have happened very often.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
According to Jack, it is never happened.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
There's never been a time where a wide receiver had
four straight or more one hundred catch seasons and not.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Been back the following year.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
No, obviously, guys didn't have one hundred plus catches until
a couple of decades ago. The passing game has really
exploded here. But this is an unprecedented type of a
production drain when you're talking about a single, high volume player.
Time will tell how this entire thing plays out, but
certainly they're confident in some of the young guys they have,
even if they're not hitting their stride in Week one.
(25:33):
We saw in places like Green Bay last year when
you're relying on young players, they can get better.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Keon Cole a big ken't Cole mescuse be a big
part of this drafting him, but also all those veterans
that they brought in, Curtis, Samuel mccollins, kJ Hamler.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
They got a bunch of guys. Somebody's gonna have a
career year.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
Somebody's gonna have to have a career year to help
fill the void by Stefan Diggs no longer being in
Buffalo and Josh Allen figuring out and especially as we
get into live games, who he is most comfortable with
and who he is going to feed elsewhere. We've got
some news around the NFL today. Here is what's new
in the NFL today. Mike Williams, the Jets wide receiver,
(26:12):
acquired in free agency one year fifteen million dollar deal. Yeah,
activated off the pup list. Remember he tore his ACL
in Week three last year. There was a great confidence
he'd be ready for week one. This is the greatest
sign that the Jets believe that's going to be the case.
Let's see how much he does when the Jets returned
to practice, didn't have a full practice today. Ron Dell Moore,
this one stinks here cart it off. It looked like
(26:34):
an air cast from those on the scene there today
taking to the hospital after suffering a right leg injury.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
At practice today.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
We don't have the full extent of it, but it's
looking like that one is going to be a bad one.
So tough tough one there for the former cardinal now
in Atlanta. Elsewhere on the wide receiver injury front, this
one stinks as well. The third round pick from a
year ago who was so productive, Josh Downs, out four
to six.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
Weeks with an ankle sprain.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
This according to our ian rapaport, So that one a
tough one for Indianapolis there. But the good news is
doesn't seem like if he does miss some regular season action,
it will not be much. We'll see how Downs can
come back from that one. Josh Jacobs. You see that
big deal he signed back in the spring. With Aaron
Jones gone. He is now the bellcal for the Packers,
(27:21):
four years, forty eight million dollar deal.
Speaker 4 (27:24):
Matt Lafleur has.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Been very effusive in his praise of Jacobs and what
he thinks that he could be to this offense. Here
is Lafleur on Jacobs.
Speaker 12 (27:33):
He's an established veteran that's performed at a high level,
and I just get so excited that he can do
it all. He can be a weapon in the passing game,
not only as a pass blocker, pass protector, but also
out of the backfield catching the ball. He's got great
hands and he hit some speed yesterday that was exciting
to see. He's just a tough, rugged runner, and I
(27:56):
don't think we'll truly get to appreciate his value until
we get to live tackling situations, because I think that's
really what he's known for, is he's a punishing runner.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Jeffrey Chadia now joins US. Jeffrey had a chance to
visit all four teams in the NFC North, and you
had a chance to write about it on NFL dot com.
First read. Let's start with the Packers. Your takeaway from
Packer from Packers.
Speaker 9 (28:19):
Camp, the defense will be a lot better Mike, in
large part because of new safety Zabrier McKinney. He was
the guy they targeted a free agency because Jeff Hafley,
the new coordinator coming in, is running a new four
to three system, wants to play fast and wants a
safety who can be versatile, and that's exactly what McKenney.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Brings to it.
Speaker 9 (28:38):
He can play in the slot, he can play in
the box, he can play deep, and he's talked about
how much he's wanted.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
To be a leader in this room. Only twenty four
years old.
Speaker 9 (28:47):
But Jay r Alexander the corner Star corner for the Packers,
that he's already shown great leadership, the way he communicates,
the way he's mentored some of the other safeties. So
look for Zabrier McKinney, that former Giant to come over
to Green make a huge impact this year.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
The Lions.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
Meanwhile, it's been like it's been like this, right, it's
been like this. It's like there's only a little bit
more to go. What is the takeaway that you had
from Lions camp that can help put them over the
town well, well.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Two takeaways.
Speaker 9 (29:16):
Actually, one is in the secondary where they drafted Terry
and Arnold and Ennis Regstraw and traded for Carlton Davis
at corner. Really upgraded what was a huge weakness for
this team last year, and you saw it late in
the season in the postseason, they really couldn't defend the pass.
Now they're really excited about what they have back there.
And I talked to the defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn about it,
and he said he expects those young guys to be
(29:37):
badasses to go out there and cover and tackle. But
somebody else they expect to be a badass too is
Jamison Williams, thirty year receiver who was a first round
pick a couple of years ago, but they've been waiting
to explode. He feels like his maturation has really shown
up this year in the offseason, the way he's worked out,
the way he's improved as a route runner, the way
he's put on weight, and they feel like if he
(29:57):
can do what they expect and being weapon alongside A'man
Ross Saint Brown and stay on the port in that offense,
they can really get to that next level that you
were in talking about love.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
It, and then we'll round it out with the Bears
are a team from hard knocks. Caleb Williams is there,
but that's not one of your biggest takeaways regarding what
you saw at Bears camp.
Speaker 9 (30:18):
Yeah, so much talk about Caleb Williams, but really it's
the supporting cast.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
It's going to determine his.
Speaker 9 (30:22):
Success in his first year. And DeAndre Swift, their big
free agent acquisition at running back, is a big part
of that. You know, being an East Coast guy, you
saw what he went to the Philadelphia Eagles last year.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
He stayed healthy.
Speaker 9 (30:33):
You saw the running skills in the open field, the
receiving skills. That's a big part of what Shane Walder
and their new coordinator wants to do. He came over
from Seattle where he was able to have guys like
DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, work with Kenneth Walker the
third and Zach Charbonnay. I really think a big underrated
part of this team's success is going to be how
well they run the football because Shane Waldron is not
(30:53):
going to.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
Back up on that now.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
DeAndre Swift signed like greed.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
The terms I should say about like five minutes into
the windows. So the Bears made him a priority, which
means they are certainly gonna make him a priority in
their offense. NFL dot com backslash Badass No wait, hold
on NFL dot com back slash first read.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
I like that. That's where you find Jeffrey Tod.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
I like the madass one too. They see if we
can get that. They call that a vanity U r L.
We can see if we can get that for you,
Jeffrey Toda. Thank you very much, man. We appreciate you
joining us here on The Insiders. We're gonna head back
to rent in Washington and check in on No Seahawks
and one of the more picturesque training camp stops.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
That you can ever. I'm those flowers in the background.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
That's beautiful even while guys are throwing throwing haymakers.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Welcome back to the Insiders, presented by Rocket More Mortgage.
What a great day out here Renton, Washington's we wrapped
up inside training camp live with the Seattle Seahawks, and
we're here now for the Insiders, joined by.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
The head coach of the Sale Seahawks, Mike mctland.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Thanks Tom good to see.
Speaker 8 (32:11):
It, brother.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
So what what are you excited about out here. You're
a couple of weeks in, you haven't gotten to the
games yet. I know you kind of temper your expectations
for right and the young guys.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
But what do you like that you're seeing.
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Yeah, we've been getting after it.
Speaker 13 (32:20):
It's uh, you know, I'm proud of how we responded today.
We came out, we were ready to practice. I don't
know what the numbers are, but you know, we've we've
been out here, I don't know, fourteen last sixteen days.
I think we're tired of going against one another, you know,
but the guys are, uh, guys are spirited. We had
a we had a great practice and we're you know,
we're excited for Saturday.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
It was it was feisty out here. There were a
few we were we had our face forward the camera.
We kept going like what's going on now? DK played
a little wlackable at one point. There where's the line
for you in terms of you want the intensity, you
want the competition, You probably don't want people using their
helmet as well.
Speaker 13 (32:52):
Yeah, we're we're right on the line right now, and
I think I think the guys realize that, like, hey,
you know, let's take care of one another. Definitely want
people fighting out here and stuff, and especially against our
own teammates. And then DK gave a great message jannt
of practice, just kind of putting us everything in perspective.
The guys finished it out the right way. So proud
of our guys.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
So what do you say in that moment you called
the team up after I think it was the second
of the little little scrums that you had there.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
What's the message?
Speaker 13 (33:16):
Yeah, it was positive, it was positive, and the guys
are in a good spot. But just remind him why
we're out here, what we're trying to get accomplished, and
take a deep breath and let's finish the practice the
right way.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
And then we did.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
You've been coaching a long time relatively speaking, here, this
is your first time being in that that head shair.
There's all kinds of things like this, right, controlling the
messaging your team and the culture everything else.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
What are you learning about yourself.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
In this process?
Speaker 13 (33:40):
It's all these examples of an opportunities to reinforce what
you said you wanted to be about. So those are
the things you're seeking and I think the guys they
appreciate when you like point stuff out of Hey, we
said we're going to be like this, you know, are
we committed to that or not? And I think when
they realized, hey, you know, these are the things we
said we wanted to be about. This is an opportunity
to actually, you know, put our money more our mouth is,
(34:01):
so to speak.
Speaker 4 (34:02):
And I think they've responded to that.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Your three games out from the preseason opener. The preseason
for coaches always, but especially with the new staff, is
the communication and you're going to have the red challenge
flag for the first time.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Do you go through like rehearsals on things?
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Are there pretend conversations, pretend challenges like what have you.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
Done to yourself? A lot?
Speaker 13 (34:22):
I mean, Brian Airs has done a great job of
organizing all of our situations and we've met throughout the summer,
all the offseason what our overall philosophy is going to
be and then implementing it to the players, trying to
understand how we want to manage the game. Managing the
actual headset was cool, you know in the stadium on Saturday,
and we got great people behind that process. But just
(34:42):
trying to simulate as many you know, situations as we
possibly can in practice, and again it'll be the first
time we do it on Saturday. But you know, I
mean we've played NFL football games before, and we'll make
decisions and we'll kind of debrief after and we'll move forward.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
One of the things I'm always most curious about, do
you know where you're going to keep the challenge?
Speaker 13 (35:00):
As you were talking about it, I actually thought I
was like, you know what, I haven't thought about.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Which were going out? We're going to solve him where
do you think? Well, we didn't go so socks tough.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Yeah, it's not accessible pocket.
Speaker 13 (35:10):
I think the back left pocket is available right now,
that might be the spot.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
All right, so there we go, back left pocket.
Speaker 13 (35:16):
Yeah, the situation, the situation cards in this pocket right
with my left hand. Call shoots in the right hand,
so I think that back left pocket.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Is so make sure that's occupied by the flag. Don't
do one of these's like you forgot.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
Yeah, it's like, well a foam mall at keys red flag.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Your quarterback Gino Smith obviously miss time last week. Get
a little bit rolled up right in practice. She gave
him all the scans he's been back. How does he
look at how is he embracing the opportunity to really
be a leader for a team in transition.
Speaker 13 (35:42):
Now he looks sharp right now, he looks really good.
It'd be fun to see him go against a couple
other schemes over the next few weeks. I think he's
in a great spot, that the guys are in a
great spot. We're operating the offense really well. There's things
we're chasing, but he's right there, and I think he's
I think he's eager to get this thing going against
another team.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
How much running you going to give these guys your starters?
Speaker 13 (36:01):
Oh well, Gino, we're still figuring that out right now
for Saturday, based on how he feels and who else
is going to start. But we'd like to get the
starters out there and you know, get ready to go,
especially just being new schemes, you know, new systems, operation,
things like that. So I think we'll see a lot
of our guys on you know, the beginning part of
the game on Saturday, and then you know, we'll evaluate
it from there.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
This is certainly going to be a team that's going
to want to run the football. You got a lot
of weapons in the passing game, But how's that group
sorting itself out in the backfield right now.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Well, I'm i'm you know, I'm I'm on record.
Speaker 13 (36:29):
I'm excited about you know, the top two guys, and
then we've got a great battle for the third spot.
But uh, you know, Kenneth Walkers had a great offseason
and then doubled down on a great training camp. Zach
Sharbonay is a is just a He's a stud man.
He's just every day same guy, toughest nails, plays extremely hard,
plays plays on special teams.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
So I'm excited to see them go do their thing.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Mike Robinson was over here, the former Seahawks fullback, of course,
on NFL Network earlier today, he couldn't stop talking about
two guys, Jackson Smith and Jigba and then Devin Witherspoon
on defense. Let's focus on the scooening for a second year.
We know the guy's a dog, We've seen what he
can do. How much better can that guy still get?
Speaker 13 (37:05):
Well, it's been the message, you know, to him since,
uh since we were hired in February. It's just, hey,
we have so much respect for you as a person,
as a player, what you did last year. But you know,
the sky's the limit for you, bro, and we gotta
we got to get it out of you. So we
got to work together and hold you to extremely high
standard because you've earned that standard. And I think, I
think you see him attacking those things. He does not
back away from a challenge. I can tell you that much.
(37:27):
And uh, you know, there's parts of his game that
we want to improve, and we'll leave that between us
right now. But I think, uh, I just he's talk
about one of the guys that brings it every day,
the spirit, the competitiveness, chasing, you know, you know, at
the edge of his game. I mean, he epitomizes what
we're looking for on defense.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
So September, September eighth against the Broncos, that's the true debut.
I know there's a lot of process since one day
at a time, all that good stuff. How much in
your head when you're sleeping, when you're thinking, are you
just thinking ahead to that first game and really getting
to put your stamp.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
On this thing.
Speaker 13 (38:00):
This might be tough to believe, but I'm very little,
very little right now. It's it's all about who we
can become as a team. We'll worry about that when
it comes here. I mean We've got plenty of time
between now and then, but like we have to make
sure we take advantage of this time mold the team
fortunate the.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
Way we want to be. And that's that's honestly what
I'm most concerned about.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
You're so level in these interviews.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Every time I see you on camera time we've talked
off camera before. I saw Leslie Frisher's knowing you a
long time out here earlier, and he was like, I
just got a little bit of edge to him, and
we got to see that come out a little bit.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
As we get toward these real games, it'll be there.
Speaker 13 (38:32):
It's it's there, you know, Like for me to smile
this much is uncommon. You know, this is my excited face.
I appreciate you putting on the show for TV. That's good,
but uh less does have me beat.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
On the calm department. But I'll it's it.
Speaker 13 (38:47):
There's things that we and we've told the guys what
matters to us is like our intent and those situations
we're doing things that we said that we're going to do.
All right, we can handle mistakes, but when our mind's
on the right spot and when we're straying away from
kind of the vision of the team we want to become,
and you know that that fires me up a little bit.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
Awesome, Mike, thank you very much for the time. Best
of luck this season. Really appreciate you sitting down with us.
Great thanks Ton always great training camp flavor out here
in rent and Washington and across the NFL. More that
on The Insiders presented by Rocket Mortgage.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
Right after this, Welcome.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Back to the Insiders presented by Rocket Mortgage. Think you're
too good for the preseason? That guy right there and
the start nice behind the back pass. He's doing things
in practice he always does. Let's see if he doesn't
during the preseason, because he's gonna play, and here are
his thoughts on it.
Speaker 14 (39:42):
I'm extremely excited. I mean, obviously for me to go
out there and play with these guys in showcase well
where we have the ability to do, but to learn
from our mistakes too. I mean, you're gonna go out
there and play for real and play against someone else.
I'm tired of going to gets bags and every defense
known to man, and so I think just going out there,
letting the guys play, make decisions under fire and having
to make those right decision and learn from the mistakes.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
After football is back in The NFL Network has every
NFL preseason game, including twenty one live.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
It's time for football.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
The NFL Preseason August eighth to twenty fifth starts August eighth,
starts tonight, continues, starts tomorrow, continues tomorrow on NFL Network.
I'll get this right. Blackout restrictions apply. This copy is
a mess. Also streaming on NFL Plus. Subscription required for
NFL Plus. I was hosting because Tom, who has been
all over the place by the way show the Matt
(40:33):
doesn't have his monitor out there. The monitor was broken,
one of just a few technical difficulties he's had as
he's crossed the country here. So we're doing the best
that we possibly can while I'm hosting. But you know what,
tom My conscience has gotten the best of me. Are
you done traveling the country?
Speaker 4 (40:48):
There we go. My conscience has gotten the best of me.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
When you turn the show over to me, because you
didn't have a monitor, I played a little joke on you.
You didn't see Ken Field, our producer out there. Ken
show him what I held up as I was saying
that he had no monitor right there. Sorry about that, Pal,
you know, I gotta sneak that one in where I can.
But I'll tell you what who you know?
Speaker 4 (41:07):
Who else?
Speaker 3 (41:08):
You know who else is a bigger nerd? Ian Rappaport
because he didn't make any of these Insider shows. So
you don't make the insider shows. We crushed. You're not
a nerd time, You're very creepy. Yeah, yeah, I know
that's what happens. Uh yeah, I think he grabbed the
wrong microphone. So we're having we're having.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
How about that?
Speaker 13 (41:29):
All right?
Speaker 4 (41:30):
There was a four hundred I think trading camp is over.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
We gotta go, we gotta go, we gotta There was
a four hundred meter.
Speaker 4 (41:37):
Race in the Olympics. What was that guy's name where
he finished strong?
Speaker 9 (41:40):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Tom, you were the guy that just coughed up the
leave and just stumble into the finish Linetime, that was you, Hi,
how are you? The twelves are there? Bye Tom, see
you later. This has been the Insiders. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Love you
