Speaker 1 (00:10):
Could the robots soon replace humans as NFL officials? Not
really yet, but the men and stripes could be gaining
some artificial intelligence soon. Hear what Roger Goodell had to
say today at the NFL's full meeting about the potential
arrival of Chat NFL. The upstart Panthers are in the
playoff mix heading into Sunday's showdown with the Bills and
(00:33):
promow cornerback j C. Horn is a big reason why
JAYC will join us tonight with both hands to talk
about that ridiculous interception and a whole lot more. Don't
sleep on our fantasy expert Marcus Grant or any of
his fantasy sleepers. The man with some of the best
calls this season is back tonight with a couple of
(00:53):
names you will not believe, but you should probably pick
them up that anyway. Welcome inside with the Inside presented
by Progressive Insurance alongside Judy Batista and Mike Gara Folo,
I am Tom Tellisero.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Eve of week eight in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
We will talk vikings in charges with our Steve Weitz,
who joins us surely.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
But first we've got some injury news.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
And once again it is not good news for the
Washington Commanders. Their quarterback Jaden Daniels was out for Monday
night's game at Kansas City because of the hamstring injury
that he suffered last week. This according to our ian Rappaport,
it's a low grade hamstring injury, nothing long term for Daniels,
but he is going to miss at least one game.
(01:38):
Marcus Marioto, was one to one filling in for Daniels
earlier this season, will get the start in Kansas City.
Lamar Jackson, meanwhile, is on track to return for the
Ravens on Sunday against Chicago. Was back on the practice
field today, officially listed as limited.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Barn a stepback.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Odds certainly seemed to be improving greatly that Lamar will
be in the lineup, though John harbadn't want to put
odds on it just yet.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
It's hard to put a number on. I think it's
just part of the process right now. I really don't
have any shareable injury intelligence for you guys at this point.
What do you think of that?
Speaker 4 (02:15):
I would say that even Mike Tommin, who gives verbose
answers with superfluous phrases, probably impressed by that.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Phrasing right there.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Meanwhile, down in Tampa, Bucky.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Irving is still not practicing.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
He hasn't played in the month of October, and after
he got hurt, Todd Bowles was indicating we'll see by
the end of the week, in week five if he
can go. We're in week eight now, Bucky Irving is
still not there. Chris Godwin as well. When you see
fibula listed on the injury report, there's only one thing
you can do to a fibula, only one thing you
can do to a bone, and that's breaking. So something's
going on there with Chris Godwin that has him out
(02:46):
of action. Todd Bowles saying, we're up against the buy
and we've got so many injuries, Mike Evans being one
of them. Placed an injury reserve, by the way, getting
surgery on that collarbone. That will probably err on the
side of caution if a guy's not ready to go.
So perhaps these two will be out there on Sunday
against the Saints.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Judy Jets owner Wuddy Johnson was very clear yesterday he
lays the blame for the Jets O and seven start
mostly at the feet of quarterback Justin Fields said, if
we could just complete it pass it would look good.
Fields was asked today about Woody's comments. He certainly took
the high road. Here is what he had to say.
Speaker 6 (03:19):
It doesn't bother me, It doesn't. You know, of course
everybody knows. You know, I need to I need to
play better. We need to play better as a team.
And of course, you know, no matter how you know
the offense does as a unit, you know, I'm going
to get the blame. And I understand that that's just
what comes with the job. But honestly, it's what comes
(03:40):
with it. So you can't let anything kind of affect
your mind, my mind, and that's that's what it is.
No matter if it's you know him, no matter if
it's you know, family members, even teammates. Sometimes you're gonna
be there's gonna be times where you have to be
the only one who believes in yourself.
Speaker 7 (03:55):
So you know, like I said, that's his opinion.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
And like I told you guys after the game on
on Sunday, I'm at peace and on focus is right
now is working each and every day and getting better.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
So whati Johnson also repeatedly said I have faith in Aaron.
He meant Glenn not Rogers, who is acutely aware that
he is no longer a jet. He faces one of
his other former teams, the Green Bay Packers, for the
first time Sunday Night. Your thoughts, Aaron, I can go
for you just as a quote, revenge opportunity or whatever
near to we want to turn through out there.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
I do.
Speaker 8 (04:30):
Why not, Well, Brett got traded and then he went
to one of the hated rivals. You know, I was
in New Jersey for a couple of years. I don't
have any animosity toward the organization. Obviously, I wish that,
you know, things have been better in our last year there,
but you know, I have a great relationship with a
lot of people still in that organization, and you know,
(04:54):
this is not a revenge game for me. I'm just
excited to see some of those guys and be on
Sunday Night Football.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Aaron Rodgers has made some Pro Bowls over his career.
Maybe he'll make this year if he does. Roger Goodell
announcing today at the NFL League meeting in New York
at the Pro Bowl Games moving to the site of
the Super Bowl. That's the Bay Area, and we'll be
on Tuesday, which used to be Media Day Now that's
Monday night. Dell's presser used to be on Friday. Now
that's Wednesday. NFL Honors used to be on Saturday. That's Thursday.
(05:24):
We are figuring out the perfect Super Bowl week and
now the Pro Bowl games are going to be part
of that, and.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
You'll be able to see the games.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
You'll be able to see the flag football game, You'll
be able to see all that action from all of
the Pro bowlers. Meanwhile, Goodell addressed some other issues during
his meeting with the media. Was asked about artificial intelligence
when it comes to officiating. Here's what the Commissioner had
to say.
Speaker 9 (05:47):
We've added replay assist as you know, and use some
technology which I think is really a valuable thing, and
I think that will continue to evolve, and we're looking
at how i AI be a factor in that, how
can we use AI to maybe help in officiating as
well as many other areas of the operational league. So
I'm quite optimist optimistic that we're going to continue to
(06:10):
have more technology and that will involve more communication either
between the crews or between our office or the replay visual.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
All right, Julia, it was one of the topics that
came up at the fall meeting in Manhattan where we
were we are now in the comforts of home.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
What did we take away from this meeting this year.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Well, officiating, as it often is, was a through line
of the meeting. Roger Goodell gets us at every one
of these meetings for as long as I can remember
about officiating, always that there's controversy about officiating during the season,
and he always says the same thing, there's always controversy
about officiating during the season. Having said that, our meetings
started with a tour of the officiating headquarters at Park Avenue,
(06:53):
where they emphasized how they are trying to support the
on field officials with replay assist how they're trying to
be more accurate and faster with officiating, all of those things.
And then of course it ended with Roger Goodell saying
he could envision artificial intelligence assisting officiating too, So that
was certainly a through line how they are supporting the
on field officials. They have always been cognizant that the
(07:16):
on field officials are at a disadvantage seeing things compared
to what we can see on a television set, compared
to what fans can see at home when they have
a million television angles to look at, they know they.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Need to support the officials.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
The other thing I took away was the eighteen game schedule,
which seemed to be on a fast track only about
a year ago, has definitely slowed down momentum towards that,
largely because of the upheaval in leadership at the Players Association.
That has to be negotiated with the players Union. It
has to be part of a CBA, and with no
(07:50):
head of the Players Union in place right now and
not going to happen until next offseason, those negotiations can
start for a long time, possibly passed next year twenty
twenty six, which means you are looking well down the
road until we get.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
To an eighteen game season.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
So that has certainly slowed down from where we were
even a year ago.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Yeah, the fall meeting is not where you see a
lot of the things that we get excited about for meetings,
which is rule changes, those kinds of things. Those tend
to happen in March or May during those meetings in
the offseason. But this is the point of the season
where they go, Okay, where are we, how's everything going? Kickoff,
kick returns with certainly a big point of discussion. As
Troy Vincent likes to say, and likes to say over
(08:34):
and over again because he likes his line that he
came up with. They put the foot back in football.
The footback in the game is the way that Troy
phrases it with the kick return. So they're happy so
far with the returns upon unintended returns of the kick
return so far this year. Officiating certainly a big part
of it, Judy. They are not blind to the fact
(08:56):
that a lot of folks think that officiating could be
better For those of us who have been on a
sideline during an.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
NFL game and see how quickly it happens.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
It's a lot faster than those slow motion replays that
you were talking about. But anything that they can bring
in when it comes to AI, it's not going to
be able to tell you what pass interference is or
holding because in a lot of ways it's subjective. In fact,
they tried to bring in replay for pass interference a
couple of years ago and that didn't work.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
They got rid of that after one year.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
So AI and anything that they can bring whether it's
replay or AI to help out officiating.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
They're trying to make the product better.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
They'd also love to have more officials that they possibly could,
So if you at home would like to be an official,
send in.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Your application to high school college and work your way
up into the NFL.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Tom Cowboys cornerback Trayvon Diggs is in the building, but
still not practicing it for suffering a concussion in an
incident at his home last week. Cowboys defense actually played
better without him last week and may have to do
it again on Sunday in a big game at Denver.
The Cowboys are right back in it in the NFC
(09:59):
East Race, and they're going to be going up against
the Orange Crush, not the actual Orange Crush, but it's
gonna look very similar. One of the best throwback uniform
is going to be complimented by a beautiful field design.
That thing actually looks like a real live Bronco. Let's
welcome in our Brian Baldinger and Mark Ross to the conversation. Baldy,
(10:20):
this has been a fun Cowboys team and offense to
watch so far this season. You broke down the tape,
You do it as well as anybody. Tell me what
you're seeing right now from Dallas.
Speaker 10 (10:30):
Well, it's a great offense. I mean, run and pass.
Speaker 11 (10:34):
There's a rhythm to it, there's a design to it
that I think Dak is playing the best football he
has ever played. Leads the league right now with sixteen
touchdown passes. But it's fun to watch. I mean, they
called plays and Dak knows exactly where to go with
the ball. Like it's this is third and one, last week,
CD back in the uniform right here. They're going to
call this plate for CD. It's going to be a
(10:55):
double slant with him and Jake Ferguson. But the key
is the balls out, one, two, three, balls out. Dak
hits his back step and he hits him throw. This
is a two step hitch and throw to Pickings on
this go route right here. And look when he's throwing it.
When he's released to the ball, he's thrown it to
a spot He's trusting his receiver Pickings to get it.
He gives him enough room on the sideline to get it. Now,
(11:17):
this is third and twelve and he's going to hit
the tight end over the middle here, but it's a
five step drop hitch and throw. He needs a little
more time for a purgoson to get down the field
right in front of the safety, perfect location, over seventy
percent completion percentage were do right.
Speaker 10 (11:32):
Now, and then you know you can get this third
and five right here.
Speaker 11 (11:34):
Man coverage Lotimore's trail and George Pickens right here and
again he's going to give him a little bit of
time to work, but he he's got pressure right in
his face. He hitched the balls out before he makes
his break. That's great time. And you see this play
in play out and then what it's done to passing game.
It's given him a lot of favorable running situations. Two
safeties deep. Let's run it on first and ten. Javonte
(11:57):
Williams is having a renaissance no matter who he's running behind.
Speaker 10 (12:00):
But this is a well blocked play. Full scoop right
here gets him into the alley. He's on his way to.
Speaker 11 (12:05):
The safety right here, picking up nine yards to that
first down run.
Speaker 10 (12:10):
It's just a great offense right.
Speaker 11 (12:11):
Now between Brian Schottenheimer, Clayton Adams who came over from Arizona,
and what Dak is doing right now. Whether CD was
in the lineup not in the lineup, there is a
rhythm to this offense that is undeniable and it's really
lead to great production.
Speaker 12 (12:27):
Baldy completely agreed. I don't think he's just playing great.
I think he's the MVP of the league up to
this point, and that is because I always liked DK
and thought he was a certain level, but didn't know
if he had the ability to take his game to
another level and take the whole offense to another level.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Well, he is absolutely doing that this year.
Speaker 12 (12:45):
Where I watched the Cowboys, especially when CD went down,
I was like, oh boy, they're done with Well, Dak
got even better and he raised everybody's level. George Pickens
making huge plays every game, guys coming out of the woodwork,
Ferguson there with three touchdowns touchdown game. So he's raised
the level of everybody on that offense. And the thing
that's impressed he most about Dak is just Baldy. He's
(13:08):
unflappable in the pocket. I mean, stuff goes around him
and pressure and he just steps in there, delivers on time,
He delivers with accuracy, and he just always looks like
he is in command and confident where he's going with
the football. So I think this will continue. CD getting
worked back into the offense even more. This Cowboys team
is going to be a problem for anybody. This Cowboys offense,
(13:30):
and if that defense could just make one or two
stops a game or get one or two turnovers, they
really can beat anybody.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Now can they do that?
Speaker 12 (13:37):
We'll see, But the Cowboys will be right into it
at the end because of the way Dak is playing
and has that offense rolling.
Speaker 13 (13:47):
Taylor floats it down the seat towards.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
JC Hard, No one handed takeaway. The Panthers get the
ball back now, JC Punch just talked hard, finally got
some work.
Speaker 7 (14:02):
What a catch.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
One of the most ridiculous interceptions that you are ever
going to see. And you can see the reaction from
everybody on the internet, current players, former players, anyone who
saw that.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Trying to figure out the sheer physics of our next guest.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
It is Panthers Pro Bowl cornerback JC Horn with me,
Tom Pelisero, and our friend Bridget Connon here.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
On the Insiders.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Jasey A lot I want to talk to you about,
but start off with just taking me through that play.
To me, it almost looked like a you know, a
center fielder in baseball going back, you're kind of checking
the wall, you find the ball at the last second there.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Just walk me through that play and what you're seeing.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
Yeah, man, just quarters look from us.
Speaker 14 (14:44):
It was in quarters a quarter quarter a half across
the boarding. The receiver had a step on me because
I thought I had my safety with me, so I was.
Speaker 7 (14:53):
Playing low on it.
Speaker 14 (14:54):
And yeah, and like you said, I checked the fight
at the ball and then I checked for the receiver
to see where he was, and I felt like I
could get to it, so I just kept my eyes
in this kind and played the football.
Speaker 15 (15:05):
You've made a couple of those crazy one handed interceptions
this season, and you kind of mentioned earlier in the
season that it was due to maybe only practicing with
one hand during training camp.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
What's the story there, Yeah.
Speaker 14 (15:17):
Yeah, So before we joined practice the Browns, I got
into a small car accident. Had to get a couple
of stitches in my in my left hand, so I
was practicing with a cast over in an Indy individual.
I had to catch everything one hand on my right hand,
and ye had it didn't paid off to the first
in the first half of the season.
Speaker 7 (15:37):
As you can see, I.
Speaker 14 (15:38):
Hadn't caught two one hands with my right hand, So
you know, you got to steal the reps when you
can listen.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
You've been making plays since you got into the league,
but this is the first time we've had you on
this show to talk about the Panthers being above five hundred.
The Panthers are in the playoff chaser, one game out
of first place right now in the NFC South Division.
Just tell me about the evolution, especially over this season
and a half since Dave Canalis and the staff came in.
How have you guys gotten into this position where you're
(16:05):
out there competing right now with the NFL's best.
Speaker 14 (16:08):
Yeah, just a testament to the to the organization, to
the coaches that they put together, to the team they
put together. You know, us, like you said, we ain't
been to we ain't been the best team over the last.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
Couple of couple of years.
Speaker 14 (16:21):
But you know, it brought us closer to losing, brought
us closer as a team, and now we just we're
playing for each other.
Speaker 7 (16:27):
You know, we're finishing games h strong.
Speaker 14 (16:30):
You know, even the games we lost, we feel like
we a team that finished real good in the second half.
Speaker 7 (16:34):
So now we just put it together.
Speaker 14 (16:36):
But you know, we still got a long way to
go and just taking it week by week and trying
to get better and reach our best.
Speaker 15 (16:43):
So you guys have won four of the last five,
but not really acting like it. Everything I've been told
is you and Derek Brown are kind of keeping the
team grounded. You don't want people to get too excited of,
you know, about what's happening. dB also hasn't let you
guys have a victory Monday. What's the importance of having
the mindset like that.
Speaker 14 (17:00):
Yeah, in the NFL, like as you'll know, it's a
long season and I've been going back today is like
my rookie year. We started three and oh and then
it was it was downhill from there. So we know
how I like to be on a little small winds
streak and then you know it's it's the best teams
in the league, so you can get guy any Sunday.
So we're just trying to, you know, stay focused, and
we don't we don't really have any room to get
(17:21):
laxed or you know, get victory Monday or anything like that.
And we just, like I said, trying to reach our
best as a team and you know, hopefully I have a
shot in the playoffs at the end.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
Of the season.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
At this time of year ago, your quarterback Bryce Young
is riding the bench. He's the backup quarterback behind Andy Dalton.
I know his status is in doubt for this Sunday.
Didn't practice today. But when you're talking about the growth
and really the renaissance of Bryce Young stepping in, what
types of things have you seen from him that are
maybe different than they were even.
Speaker 7 (17:49):
Speaker 14 (17:51):
I would say when when mayjor thing is just his leadership,
you know obviously, you know, being a number one pick
and I'll come into a locker room full of grown
man it's not easy to.
Speaker 7 (18:01):
You know, voice europeon or lead and you know, Bryce,
I feel like he didn't stepped up in that area
a lot. And also just his confidence and his swagger.
Speaker 14 (18:10):
I feel like he plays with more of that, and uh,
you know, I just got a lot of respect for him,
like you said, you know, uh, being put on the
bench last year and coming back finishing the season strong,
and even this year, you know, he's playing playing.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
Good for us.
Speaker 14 (18:21):
So I'm just excited to see him keep growing and
we go as he goes. So as long as long
as he's growing and playing good, you know, I feel
like we're gonna be.
Speaker 7 (18:29):
A good team.
Speaker 15 (18:30):
You've got the bills Josh Allen this Sunday. What's the
key for you guys in the secondary to containing him?
And you know a guy like Josh Allen can make
throws from anywhere.
Speaker 7 (18:39):
Yeah, you know, great player.
Speaker 14 (18:41):
Uh, And the key is, you know, I feel like
just you know, staying focused all game because you know,
he one of those players that could change the game
in one play. You know, he makes spectacular plays all schedule,
you know, scrambling around looking for the big plays. So
you know in the secondary we're gonna have to plaster
a lot. We had to be disciplined in our wrestlane
is but great player. It's a great challenge for us.
(19:02):
And you know we can't wait.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Jacy. We've had you on this show before.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
We had you right after you sign that big contract
in the offseason, whether it's getting paid or it's making picks.
Like you have this very flat line type of personality
when you're with us. You're very calm and collected, but
like I want you on Sundays.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
There's another there's another gear there. How do you find it?
What do you eat? What do you do?
Speaker 1 (19:24):
What do you listen to what isn't that brings out
that other guy on Sundays.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Now, I don't know it's been that way, says it
care for me.
Speaker 14 (19:31):
I think you just football thisself bring out that other
side for me. You able to put that helmet on
and you don't have to beat this nice, quiet guy.
Speaker 7 (19:38):
When you're on the field.
Speaker 14 (19:39):
In between those lines, you get to just let loose
for three hours and you know, dominate.
Speaker 7 (19:44):
So I feel like that's what it is.
Speaker 14 (19:45):
You're also catching me right after practice, so I'm ready
to shower and get the means and go home.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Hey well, Josh Allen, if you're watching this, enjoy the
smiles right now because you're gonna see a completely different
JC Horn on Sunday. Jac thanks as always for the
time man, keep rolling out there.
Speaker 7 (20:04):
Yes, sir, I appreciate you. I having.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
We gave kicks off Thursday night. It's the Vikings, it's
the Chargers. It's Kevin o'call for the first time against
Jim Harbaugh, who also interviewed with Minnesota before they hired O'Connell.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Is that a revenge game?
Speaker 1 (20:20):
I don't know, Steve, which has answers though he's with
us next and the Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
We gave it is almost upon us Thursday Night Football.
That's a cool graphic right there, Vikings Chargers.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
That one done by the Vikings Social Team.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Nice job right there, as that's got that so cal vibe.
You got the Chargers looking to get right here. I mean,
I think we thought they were going to cruise in
the playoffs. Now obviously it's going to have to be
something Steve Weiss that they are going to have to
battle for here. A big problem for them been offensive
line injuries. Joe Allt has not played in the month
(21:03):
of October the left tackle, although he did say earlier
this week he is expecting to go. That would be
huge if that winds up being the case for the
Chargers team.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
Yeah, Like the Chargers have lost three their last four.
Speaker 13 (21:13):
They've had to use four or five different offensive line combinations.
But alt, their best offensive lineman who started the season
left tackle, has been out with a high ankle spring.
I was at their walk through practice on Tuesday. He's
been practicing in a limited fashion over the past few
days and said he does.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Expect to play.
Speaker 13 (21:32):
Now he's being listed as questionable, but head coach Jim
Harbaugh did make it sound like alt we'll be back
in the lineup, and that's going to be huge for
an offense, for an offensive line, especially that's allowed Justin Herbert,
the starting quarterback, to get hit well one hundred and
third pressure to one hundred and thirty five times and
hit sixty two times. Those a one hundred and thirty
(21:52):
five pressures like are thirty more than any other quarterback
in the NFL. So getting all back could help. And
there is the possibility that right tackle Trey Pipkins, who's
been out with a knee injury, could return. He's been
practicing on a limited basis, but it didn't sound quite
as optimistic about getting the other bookend tackle back.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Eventually, they'll get back to their starting offensive line without
rush On Slater when they lost in training camp, for
their starting offensive line at least to begin the regular season.
You were at that practice today because you're covering this
game for us for NFL Game Day kickoff tomorrow, so
I know you've got some thoughts on the Viking side
of things with his defense, Brian Flores, you talked about
(22:34):
Herbert getting hit.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
You can do that with a lot of other things.
That flow does up front, right.
Speaker 13 (22:38):
Yeah, But I spoke to Johnson Grenard, the edge rusher
who only has one sack. By the way, we know
how prolific he's been over the past few seasons, and
he was saying, like, look, a lot of times when
they face teams that have had offensive line issues, injuries,
rotations like the Chargers have, people think and his words,
that the Vikings will have an onslaught. But he said
(22:59):
that they respect the coaches there, and they respect the players,
and they know what's going to be challenged, but challenging.
But in terms of living up to that Viking standard,
he said, they have not been able to do that,
and they have got to force Justin Herbert, the NFL's
leading passer, to throw the ball. They want to get
him into some known passing situations because they do think
(23:19):
they can come up with some creative pressure packages to
get him off his spot. Would you know, Justin Herbert
has thrown some interceptions in those losses, So that's what
they're trying to generate when they come to town to
face the Chargers on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
I mentioned NFL game day kickoffs just one of your responsibilities,
the other one being this very program. The Insider Steve
Weisch will join us on Thursday to break down that game.
He's got more left to unload on your folks.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
That's coming up on Thursday.
Speaker 5 (23:47):
Judy two, our tongue of Faioloa has had some rough
outings on the field the last two weeks. Six interceptions
over the last two games. He's also had some rough
turns at the microphone. Frankly, here is Dolphins coach Mike
McDaniel on his quarterback.
Speaker 16 (24:02):
We had a a great hour and a half meeting yesterday.
We had a great hour meeting the day before. As
as two and I have always operated. I think there's
zero uncertainty with Tua on my conviction and him and
(24:23):
my belief in him. So I think we're we're both very,
very eager to do better at our jobs, and we're
we're both very committed and trusting of each other to
to respond to what is necessary for the team to
do better.
Speaker 17 (24:43):
You got to have that in a in a relationship.
It can't always be man, here's your flowers, here's here's
rose is.
Speaker 7 (24:49):
Hey, man, you had a bad game.
Speaker 17 (24:51):
It's all right, buddy, Like you got to have those
tough conversations and I've had those tough conversations with him
this week. We met yesterday, we at the day before,
last week, and the week prior, you know, with what
we want to accomplish.
Speaker 10 (25:06):
How can we.
Speaker 17 (25:07):
Get our guys going, but more importantly, how can we
stay in there offensively, put points on the board and
help our guys win the game whenever that opportunity comes,
if it's for the offense.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
To do so, Oh to be a fly on the wall.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
During those conversations, Bucky Brooks joins the insiders. Let's talk
about some struggling offenses, and certainly the Miami Dolphins offense
is struggling big time. Is this still fixable, Bucky?
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Or are they broken beyond repair?
Speaker 18 (25:39):
They're broken beyond repair, and they're broken beyond repair because
the guy who was really the lynch fin to this
offense being one of the more dynamic and explosive offenses
the first couple of years of Mike McDaniels tenior is
not available and that's Tyreek Keel. When Tyreek Hill is
on the field, everyone has to tilt the coverage in
his direction with him not there. I like Jayden Waller,
but Jalen Waller is the number one receiver that will
(26:01):
command that kind of attention, and so you have that
missing piece gone.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
You also have the league that is caught up.
Speaker 18 (26:07):
To the side to side horizontal nature of the offense
that Mike McDaniels runs. They were explosive because they were
fastening everybody. They would get the ball on the perimeter
and outrun people to the edges. Now they're taking that away,
And because you don't have the vertical element with Tyreek Hill,
they're forcing the Miami Dolphins to basically play half court
basketball and without a dominant running game. Because the offensive
(26:30):
line has not necessarily played up to par, they just
don't have enough to get it done. Look, I love
to a tongue about Loway, and I like Mike mcdenne's
and what he was able to do from a creative standpoint,
But right now, the personnel of the scheme and those things,
it doesn't mesh. And it's going to be really, really
hard to put this back together without Tyreek Hill.
Speaker 10 (26:48):
On the perimeter.
Speaker 5 (26:49):
All Right, we saw the struggles on national television of
the Houston Texans offense. Are they broken or are they fixable?
Speaker 10 (26:57):
Yuck?
Speaker 2 (26:58):
That's the first thing that's sick at the Texas offense.
Speaker 18 (27:02):
It doesn't make sense. They have a quarterback who has
played at a very, very high level. There is time
in his NFL career to not be able to figure
it out. And it's not really CJ. Stroud, it's just
the scheme does not match. It doesn't necessarily make sense.
You have enough weapons to be able to get this done.
Nico Collins is one of the best wide receivers in
the league. They have a quarterback that is a dime dropper.
(27:24):
They have other pieces in place, but they just can't
get it done now. Joe Mitchen is not available. And
last year, what Joe Mitchen did, he was able to
kind of steady the offense out with the running game.
But without a consistent running game, so much is on CJ.
Stroud and the scheme just doesn't create winners for him,
enough winners for this offense to exist without a running game.
(27:46):
I just don't see how they get this done in
the near future, particularly with the Indianapolis Colts running away
with division.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
I just think this offense is broken beyond repair.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
All Right, The Bengals offense is actually working much better
since Joe Flacco got There are five touchdowns, no interceptions
with him as the starter, can he keep the Bengals
in contention until Joe Burrow can return in December?
Speaker 18 (28:09):
Judy Yes, And I'm gonna say this as a retired gamer,
if I could pick up the sticks and play with
his team, I will play with the.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Cincinnati Bengals with Joe Flecco.
Speaker 18 (28:17):
And part of that reason is because he is going
to air it out without fear. And when you think
about the weapons that Cincinnati Bingos have on the outside,
Jamar Chase on one side, t Higgins on the other,
you still have multiple tide ends that can get loose
down the middle. They can attack you in so many
different ways. And because Joe Flacco has seen every possible
defensive tack is that you can throw at this offense.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
He knows how to stay in attack mode and Chase.
Speaker 18 (28:42):
Brown being able to give them a similus of a
running game because now defenses have the back off. The
Cincinnati Bengals have found something, and they found something in
a very old quarterback who still has a little life.
Speaker 10 (28:54):
Lifting it all.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
Let's stuck it down, hurts fakes, he's packed, he's looking,
he is going deep.
Speaker 10 (29:03):
He wants the funte smith.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
He has it twenty fifteen ten to five touchdown, the
fun times Smith beat Rogers.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
They set that one up perfectly.
Speaker 13 (29:16):
Smithy just outruns a secondary and into the end zone
for the touchdown.
Speaker 12 (29:21):
I don't say seventy done yard touchdown pass from Hertz
to the Vontee Smith, perfectly.
Speaker 10 (29:27):
Thrown ball by Jalen Hurts. He dropped a dime.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
And they all lived happily.
Speaker 4 (29:34):
Ever, maybe for one week at least. Brian Baldinger and
Mark ross Baldi, You've got the call on Eagles Giants
for Compass Media this coming Sunday. I have the coverage
for NFL Network, so we'll be hanging out on the
sidelines pregame.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
They made some challenges or some change. Excuse me. I
did talk about it coming into that game.
Speaker 4 (29:57):
They wanted to lean on the running game more, and
they did early on, but at some point they had
to open it up because Minnesota was king on that
running game obviously, So your thoughts on the Eagles offensive
change a little more under center as well?
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Yeah, they did.
Speaker 11 (30:09):
And I talked to Kevin Patula before the game on
the sideline and they wanted to go under seven.
Speaker 10 (30:14):
They wanted to play action. The play action pass it.
Speaker 11 (30:16):
We just saw DeVante Smith for seventy nine yards and
third quarter was a result of that.
Speaker 10 (30:21):
They also did somewhere.
Speaker 11 (30:22):
You know, Jalen, like a lot of quarterbacks the league,
under center, you know, full play action where he's turning
his back to the defense, seven step drops, getting the
ball down the field. They wanted to get more of
that because they wanted more explosive plays and they just
weren't getting them, and so they kind of looked at
what a lot of other.
Speaker 10 (30:39):
Teams were doing in the league and they're like, we
could do the same thing. And so, you know, Jalen
had a career day and a lot of guys got fed,
and guy's pretty happy.
Speaker 11 (30:48):
But I thought that was a pretty significant The other thing,
when Jalen's under center, you know, Saquan is seven or
eight yards deep and he I talked to Saquan about that,
and he wanted that opportunity to have more time to
see back lanes and.
Speaker 10 (31:01):
Some opportunities that he did get earlier in the game.
Speaker 11 (31:03):
He didn't have a great yarnage game, but I thought
he had a couple of good runs and I think
we'll see more of that against the Giants this Sunday Mark,
because I think it's something that they need to evolve into,
just because the way teams are playing in this league
right now, with those umbrella and shell defenses, you got
to find ways to get ball down the field and
play actions working for a lot of good offenses in.
Speaker 12 (31:25):
This league, right Baldy, I'm talking about getting the ball downfield.
What did we see throughout this season about Jalen and
those receivers, the miss balls downfield that he didn't hit,
And I think that was the biggest part of that game.
But why he was so sharp is that he executed
and he hit the big plays downfield to AJ, to Devonte,
the touchdown in the fourth quarter to AJ Brown. You
(31:47):
couldn't on that skinny post, you can't throw a better
ball than that than Jalen did. So that was the
sharpest I have seen him since the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
But then also.
Speaker 12 (31:57):
Layering that was that he made play when there was pressure.
So he made plays when it was on time, within rhythm.
But that third and thirteen play where he got out
of pressure in the fourth quarter and hit Aj on
the sideline, I mean that shows you the magic that
he has. So I thought that was the biggest play
of the game. So if they can execute like they
did against Minnesota against the Giants, then they'll be rolled
(32:20):
in the rest of the season.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Jalen Hurts was asked today by the media about Jackson Dart,
having seen him live a couple of weeks ago, in
that Eagle's disappointing loss to the Giants, but certainly not
disappointing from the Giants end of things.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Their rookies were sensational.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
Baldy Dart had the fourth and nineteen play the other
day against Denver and some other impressive plays, had the
interception as well, So you're looking at his tape from
a rookie perspective, some really good stuff to build on.
Speaker 10 (32:46):
I assume right.
Speaker 11 (32:47):
I think he has pretty rare pocket presence. It's not
something I believe you can coach. I believe you have it,
you don't have it. He doesn't panic, but he doesn't
play frantically either.
Speaker 10 (32:58):
He steps, he finds the old.
Speaker 11 (33:00):
This is he did it a number of times against
the league, that against the team Sunday that leads the
league in SAPs. And you know, he keeps his eyes
down the field during the whole time, even like right here,
like this ability just to step up and then make
this throw right here to Bellinger for.
Speaker 10 (33:15):
The first touchdown of the game.
Speaker 11 (33:16):
It's an example of it, but there were four or
five examples of that. Now it's nice, it'd be good
if you know me. It's good to have a little
luck like that fel coming and taking that ball off
the miss catch bike why now? But he has rare
pocket presence that shows up week in week out that
allows them to make some of these plays off schedule,
as Brian Dable likes to call loose plays.
Speaker 10 (33:36):
He creates those because of his movement.
Speaker 12 (33:40):
No doubt, Maudy, you saw that at all, miss, and
that's why the Giants were so exciting. You're seeing already
why they trade it up to get the guy because
you do see that movement and that moxie and his toughness.
I would like to see him stop trying to emulate
his buddy Cam's gataboo. And you know every game he's
taking hits and he's kind of limping around, so it
starts starting to get down a little bit more. But yeah,
that'll be important for the Giants again if they want
(34:01):
to upset the Eagles in that first matchup. They really
the Giants bully bullied.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
You know, the Eagles up.
Speaker 12 (34:07):
Front were scattab who had ninety eight yards rushing and
then Jackson Dart had fifty eight. So it'll be interesting
to see if they come with that game plan again,
if they can bully the Giants the Eagles again in
the run game. But you know the Eagles are going
to be focused on that, so Ken Jackson Dart take
his game to another level there to counteract with. You know,
VIC Dangers going to try to cut out there.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
And now for good coverage presented by Progressive Insurance. The
Bears defense has forced three plus takeaways in each of
their last four games, all Chicago wins. That ties to
the longest streak since the twenty nineteen Steelers went five
straight games with at least three takeaways. Bears also lead
the league with three games of at least four takeaways.
(34:50):
Dennis Allen doing one heck of a job. They look
for their fifth straight wins Sunday against the one and
five Ravens. I got a fantasy team that's won in
six Why, well, I we don't have a perfect lineup
in that league. If he did have the perfect lineup
last week, this is what it would have looked like.
Not some surprises like Christian McCaffrey and Jamar Chase. Definitely
(35:13):
surprises with the likes of Bo Nicks working his way
into that mix. If you don't know perfect lineup, well
it's time to Marcus. My words were accurately Marcus Marcus
Grant's words about his fantasy sleepers going into week eight. Marcus,
you've been on a hot streak on this show. Give
me somebody at the quarterback position you'd put out there
(35:36):
that people aren't thinking about.
Speaker 19 (35:37):
Well, obviously, we got six teams on a buy this week,
so a lot of people look at for quarterback help.
Michael Pinnox has a really good opportunity, and I know
for the most part it's been sort of with him
in fantasy this year, but he's done well in positive matchups.
Had twenty four points against the Bucks in Week one,
eighteen against Washington in Week four. Great matchup this week
against the Dolphins. They are the fourth best matchup for
(35:58):
quarterbacks this season. Only two guys have had fewer than
eighteen points against the Dolphins. One was Bryce Young when
ric o'dowdell was running for two hundred yards. The other
was Dylan Gabriel and his second career start in a
rain storm Vinifiliga four. A running back, may I suggest
Cuba Hubbard, which maybe wasn't a sleeper in the early
part of the year, but with Rico Dowdell taking over,
it's become a two man backfield there in Carolina. Last week,
(36:21):
Hubbard led in snaps. The touches were nearly identical this week,
with Andy Dalton likely getting the start. I expect Carolina
to lean on their running game going against that Bill's
run defense that's given up nearly six yards per attempt
so far this season. Only the Titans have given up
more rushing touchdowns to running backs than the Bills have,
So Cuba very much in play this week.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Six buys tons of injuries clear at the tight end position.
Everybody was riding the Darren Waller train for two three
weeks there he just landed on ir They might need
some help.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Who should they be picking up?
Speaker 19 (36:53):
Mason Taylor has been a very popular ad and a
very popular streaming option for a lot of folks this season.
Breeze Hall right now day to day. Garrett Wilson not
practicing on Wednesday, so Mason.
Speaker 10 (37:04):
Taylor, come on down.
Speaker 19 (37:06):
He's been the number two target in this offense and
it hasn't mattered if it was justin fields or Tyrod
Taylor on the field. Now he's got a great matchup
against Cincinnati. Been bad in pretty much every single regard.
Then at wide receiver. Look at Wandale Robinson, who very
quietly is the wide receiver. Nineteen through seven weeks, He's
top twenty in the league in targets, receptions, and receiving
yards twenty five percent target share within the context of
(37:28):
the offense. Had a twenty point game when the Giants
played the Eagles just a couple of weeks ago. So
I would expect, you know, with the Giants obviously leaning
heavily on Jackson Dart and camp Scataboo, Wandale Robinson's going
to be a big part of things as well.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
I am a habitual streamer of defense. Marcus picked up
the Rams last week, big performance. Now they got to
buy who should I pick up?
Speaker 19 (37:50):
If the Colts are still out there, and they are
out there in a surprising number of leagues, I would
go grab them.
Speaker 10 (37:55):
Now.
Speaker 19 (37:56):
Last week I told you to go get the Patriots
going against the Titans, in New England eighty nineteen points.
I know the Titans making some changes on offense, Mike
McCoy taking over as the interim head coach. They're trying
to simplify the offense. But until they show me something,
we're still targeting them. They're not good on the ground,
they're not great through the air. They give a ton
of giveaways. They have the second most sacks that they've surrendered.
(38:17):
The Colts have been very good defensively and on their
way to what they have one of the best records
in the NFL right now. So until I see some
more out of Tennessee, I'm going to keep targeting with
my streaming defense.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Spoiler.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
I did pick up the Colts already, put them in
for the Rams, drop Darren Waller in the process. See,
this is a very personal segment for me. It all
comes together. Marcus, Thank you very much. We will see
you next Wednesday. Still want to come here on this show.
Including some wise words from a man who, well, like
a lot of dads, has been enjoying a bit of
a loan time wisdom from Joe Flacco. Next on The
(38:50):
Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance, Joe Blacker was a winner
in his second Bengals start, and hear him tell today
he's also been a winner in other ways that he
might not have expected.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
After a surprise trade to Cincinnati.
Speaker 20 (39:15):
I think there's always a challenge of sitting in a
room by yourself and being lonely.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
So for me, it's trying to find ways to maybe stay.
Speaker 7 (39:22):
Over here a little bit longer.
Speaker 20 (39:24):
And then, you know, just kind of take myself out
of that mindset, call home, go sit at a restaurant
by myself and realize that, man, that's pretty enjoyable to do,
you know, after there's not too many situations.
Speaker 7 (39:40):
I tell people all the time.
Speaker 20 (39:42):
I used to see guys sitting at a bar by themselves,
or you know, just sitting by themselves, eating and grabbing
a little meal, and I'm like, man, I feel so
bad for that guy. You almost want to go join them.
And now I realize, like that dude was in Heaven.
Speaker 10 (40:00):
Leave him alone.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
That guy is fine, perfectly fine.
Speaker 4 (40:03):
Nobody's asking him for the Wi Fi password for their tablet.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Nobody's got a pee.
Speaker 4 (40:07):
As soon as the foods come, food comes, nobody's under
the table.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Have I described my dining experience with my daughters lately.
That's kind of what it is right there.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
Actually, I'm dying with your family, Mike, and I believe
at one point your daughter was trying to stick her
finger in a plug directly above and then fell. Do
you remember this, got her shoes stuck or something.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
It was a whole thing.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
Yeah, it's crazy. Well I actually don't. That's that's how
normal that is for me, Judy Go.
Speaker 5 (40:37):
That's as relatable as I have ever heard a pro
athlete b like that is. He was speaking to all
of us who have children and all of us who
have spouses, frankly, and I love them all.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
But oh man, Anthony, so we have photo shoes watching
this show right now.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
So point out I'm.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Taking the kids out to dinner right now after the show.
We're gonna have a great times. Said, look see you
tomorrow night. Snow Fast back on Friday.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
See you
