This is Mike Royle. We are joined, yeah, teaching everybody intro.
We are joined by one of Hollywood's legend in the house.
We've seen her in such great work from two Can
Play That Game to the Kill Bill movies, It Independence
Day and Now and now Independence Day Resurgence. She's back
(01:33):
the one, the only all around home girl like her
Twitter bio says Mr viver Fu, what's up. What's up, fellow.
I'm good, I'm good, thank you. Yeah, we had the
premiere last night for Independence Day Resurgence, so who I
(01:56):
was glad I got to sleep in just a little
bit today. Yeah. But now we're back up at it
on the press, you know, when we drops Friday June,
twenty years after the fact, we are back. Yeah, and
you don't look a day older. Well, thank you. I've
been up in the gym justness y'all my witness and
(02:17):
drinking my water with limit, with my limit, yes, sir, yes, sir.
Now you do look gorgeous though. Thank you for joining us.
Thank you very much. We are honored for many reasons.
One because we're movie fans. We talked about movies all
the show. Yeah, this is the R and B podcasts,
the NFL. No you well, why was I up here
(02:41):
and I have just thought about that. I was like, oh, no,
I need to peel this off because y'all not picky.
We got no sponsor money from you'all. So now it's good,
that's good talking. But I thought about y'all than you
know what I'm saying. I thought about all right, this
is the NFL Entertainment Show was so um and with
(03:02):
Vivica in the house, this is the Sports podcast meets
so full. I like that, like the way he emerged. Yeah,
that was a good marriage there. Yeah, that's what we
got today. Now I'm listen. Coming up on today's show,
we're gonna talk to Vivica about movies. We want to
talk about this big blockbuster movie, Independence Day Resurgence. We're
gonna talk sports. Why not love sports? I love sports.
(03:22):
We got depth Chart Debates Quarterback Edition. We have a
new or no segment from producer t D speaking up,
producer tv TD, talk to me what's going on guys?
And this is why I tell you guys what you
need to do. You please need to check out Independence
Day Researchers June Vivica in the House. Please check it
out for sure, and of course be subscribed to the show,
(03:43):
review the show, iTunes, stitch or wherever it is you
listen to the R and B podcast. Boom it is. Well,
let's jump right into yeah, yeah, tell us what it's
been like working on this new movie. Wow. Well, we
shot at for Monton, Albuquerque, New Mexico, which was all
him and twenty years. What was great was having the
original cast back from Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch.
(04:08):
Will Will decided that he wanted to do Suicide Squad,
but he gave us his blessing. And you know, he's
Will had done so many sequels that he was just like,
I'm cool, I need to go get a breath of
fresh air. So you know, he gave us his blessings
and we carried on, you know, So we did that.
But it was great. But I was so grateful that
this time we had sound stages. We look over Albuquerque,
(04:30):
New Mexico sound stages and we had six sound stages
the first time twenty years ago. I remember my first
eleven days. We filmed in wind Over, Utah and Salt Flats,
and when I'm telling y'all, it was hot. It was fine. Okay,
my little hair. If you look at the end of
the first Independence Day, y'all gonna look at it totally different.
Now you're gonna see all of us was like this.
(04:54):
I was squinting and then I think I turned a
couple of shades of chocolate caramel, like dark chocolate. I know,
ain't nothing wrong. Whatever, what was saying was like Lord Jesus,
Lord help up. It was like literally walking over us
with umbrellas. So at this time it felt great to
walk in and it was air conditioned. Uh. The c
g I was off the chain. The special effects were amazing.
(05:16):
I've never been scanned so much in my life. Scanned
that is so that when when when you go in there,
it's like for c g I. So that then that
way they have your image, so that now you know everything.
With the computer, they can just generate jam whatever they
need to in case they missed it. So then that
way that saves them time from reshooting. Now, now you
talk about the difference in how you guys filmed talked
(05:40):
about the difference in c g I, the difference in
the cast from to twenty years. What I want to know,
what's the difference in Vivica Fox. Definitely let okay, let's
talk about it. Okay, Well, you know, I'm definitely um
more mature. Uh. Brand of Vivica Fox has grown exponentially.
(06:03):
I now have the Vivica Fox hair collection, I have
Vivica Fox clothing line. Actually was in New York last
week working with some people and possibly uh doing a book. Yeah,
that I let everybody know my journey, like everybody sees
the red carpet stuff that's on blog this and the
third to come inside of my world and how I
became who I am. That's what the book is going
(06:25):
to be about. Um. I'm executive producer of a new
show that's gonna be coming out um um on Lifetime
this fall called Vivica's Black Magic, where I take eight
male exotic dancers on the quest of getting them a
residency in Las Vegas. How are you kidding? That's what
you think I came? Funny that you believe it. I'm
(06:47):
gonna have special guest appearances or I'm gonna call y'all
and be like, Yo, now y'all, remember I did the podcast,
so y'all got and returned to love. Are you all
ready for R and B? Why not? Why not? All
right now? And what we love about? What I love
about it because black Magic is that when you go
to Vegas that there was no diversity. It's like always
that one black brother over there in the corner, like, oh,
(07:08):
they got a black person way over there, you know.
So now we've got from we got white chocolate karma,
we got some Latin it's a whole diversity. So we
got everybody that's gonna be fun now to be out,
so I'll come back. I'm sure it's funny. You mentioned color, right,
mentioned that's a black guy over there, successful woman of
color doing your thing, right, doing your thing. Talk about
(07:31):
your journey, has it? I'm sure there were some tough times.
Of course, I'm sure there was some persons you had
to overcome. U talk about that and and and how
grateful you are now that you've overcome them. And now
you're here today doing a new movie, No doubt, Independence
Day Resurgence, which was the biggest blockbuster twenty years ago.
It made eight hundred and twenty million dollars worldwide. I
(07:52):
hope it does it's right right because I appreciate them
checks to keep that real. But of course it's been
a journey, but want it made me a stronger woman.
I have seen so many people in my business come
and go, especially show business, a business that are too
you up and spit you out if you're not smart
and you don't make wise choices and have a good
(08:13):
team with you. And then for me, I learned that
the more that I had, the more versatility that I
had in my career that it equal longevity. You see
what I'm saying. So I know how to do drama.
I know how to do comedy. I know how to
produce stage plays. I know how to host television. I
know how to model. You know what I'm saying. I
give good, hairy thank you to Empire as Cookies older Sisters. Candice. Okay,
(08:41):
I got that kind of stuck. It's kind of oh okay,
but what a little bit bit of me isn't all
my characters because Candice is the furthest from me, because
she's too boogie, you know what I mean. She's like
in the suburbs with a white husband and her two
(09:03):
point five kids and the white pig of fens. And
then she comes and see Cookie Nam and all of
that ghetto fabulous going on and see and I am
ghetto fabulous. I love being ghetto fabulous. So that's for me.
I'm Frankie. I'm thing Emmercine. And don't forget Shante. You
can play that game. Go go got to get me
some shant work it out. You're the thing. I was
(09:29):
gonna keep it. Really yeah, I just saw her in
the hallways and I had to tell her you an
army podcast. We keep it funky. Yeah, And she said,
I'm gonna keep it. That's what that's what we do
exactly right. I guess you thought I was gonna come
here and be canvas. Hello, how are you today expect that?
So you're a sports fan, I'm a huge Obviously, the
(09:51):
Golden State Warriors just took it ill to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Shout out to them. Did they really taken out? Yeah?
I'm just talking about Rands all right, because I'm west
Side for life. I feel right west they am. I
like the Pacers too, But I've been living in California
for almost close to three decades. Brother, I've lived in
(10:12):
California longer than I lived Indianapolis. I feel you. But
how can you say those people ain't get beat? No,
well I'm not. I'm not saying I'm not throwing shade.
I'm saying they lost the championship. That's all I was said,
lost the series. Yeah, and also your your Panthers fan, Yes,
Cam o Cam, they lost too. And obviously, like when
(10:33):
you see the finals and you see the super Bowl,
these are these are our blockbusters of sports. Absolutely, so
what we don't want to know from you. Mike kind
of touched on it, but working on a blockbuster film.
He talked about Will and you know, I think there's
a lot of people that were concerned, but I'm not
concerned because it's still a blockbuster. He gave the blessing.
You guys went out and made a big bass move.
That's what wanted. Anybody wanted that blockbuster movie. So what
(10:56):
is it like working on the super Bowl esque of movies?
A lot more luxuries, you know what I'm saying. Like,
you get there, you come to work and they're like saying,
would you like a ginger tea? Uh, you know, a smoothie?
Whereas other movie you you gotta show up with your
own full pack for today, you know, but just a
lot more luxuries. They take care of you. I mean,
(11:18):
this is the craziest thing. They want my underwear. I
was like, really, they were like, yes, we need your things.
So you know, they dress you from head to toe.
They take excellent care of you. Whereas when you produce
independent films or other things like that, you're showing up
with your ward, up with your jewelry. You're showing up
with a lot more So there's a lot more luxuries
and just uh, travel is awesome when you go do
(11:41):
press you ain't like dang okay do put me in
the middle row in economy, put me on the train.
You know what I'm saying. You know, we were just
in Times Square or the kickoff last week of Independent
State Resurgence, and man, we were in the middle of
Time Square with the U. S. Armies celebrating their two
hundred forty first birthday. Bring the nastack bell. My name
(12:02):
was on the side of a building. The build the
movie was playing on the side of building. It was like,
this is my life. It was awesome. So but then
you know, I do big as well as I do
because I like to keep the humbleness of knowing that
it's not gonna always be big. But I do love
what I do. You know, sometimes I like as a
producer that I've got to go shopping, that I've got
(12:24):
to put things together, that I've got to call my
hairline people and be like, Yo, they showed me some
hair so come on, I ain't gonna be on them,
so let me help you all out. Called my clothing line, yo,
send over some clothes, you know, And there's there's rewards
in the small time hustle too. Absolutely right, absolutely benefit
if you're going and do it from ground up exactly.
Look at us. We started as a podcast two days talking,
(12:45):
no TVs, no cameras in there. Hey y'all, did they
give me half five on? Yes? Life is good. That's right.
I'm employed, y'all. I'll get a check. I got some
push I pay for. Can I get it? Can I
get it? On? Let's get bur Chase man, I gotta
(13:06):
work out before now I can say, now you do
got to show up with you with your body game on.
I love the job that the first time I could
be like, think you might need to do a little
bit more cardio, you know. So that's because you see,
that's them telling us, I think you need to might
lose a couple of bells. So I felt good to
have the shoe on the other foot because they had
body one last one, last question before we go to
(13:27):
a beat, which one of the championships you say you
were you know, Steph Curry still always will and a
Carolina Panthers fan. Yes, championship losses. What's the worst for you? U? Uh?
Steph Curry's yeah, I really yeah, Well, because I really
wanted Peyton Manning to win. Um that was his swan song.
(13:47):
And it was a wonderful game too. And as I
feel like with Steph Curry and Cam, they made it
to the biggest game their team. They took their franchise
to the biggest game of the year. And so just
because you know, you didn't win the big one, and
don't forget that Steph name also set a record seventy
three and nine. They did throw. They did throw Michael
(14:10):
Jordan's record, so that was something to make. And the
quite as a cap okay, see, they wowed him out
were as Cleveland had. They swept everybody. And then I'm
not gonna talk about that. That that rolling block that
j R. Smith gave big Boy from the middle took
(14:30):
him out, I mean, you know, and then that supposedly
uh flagrant Lebron stepped over Draymond set him up to
get ejected, and then and then he got suspended. When
they was on the roll for Game five, right, I
was mad because to me it seemed like it was
(14:50):
a present at a setup for Cleveland not having the
victory for many years in my opinion, Chris, when they
started in top of the morning. I'm gonna keep it
real of y'all because I love Lebron. Don't get me wrong,
Brian Bron, No, don't hate on you. You're the greatest
basketball player that we have had in many, many years.
And he still is King Lebron in. But it seemed
to me that it was business more than it was.
(15:14):
They needed seven games, and they need seven games. They
needed seven games, and top of the morning, when you
start seeing the commercials about and no footage, I was like,
how they get that footage cut together that quick? This
would be so great for Cleveland. Wouldn't this just be
grate for Cleveland? Oh? Come on? And then when the
Golden State got up by ten points, tach foul started
(15:37):
being called. You know what I'm saying. I mean, let's
just keep I was, I was, I ain't no fool.
I was born to night, but not last last night.
I think we gotta have a beat on that note.
Come on, he said, Oh my gosh, I didn't know
she was gonna break down that I'm talking about that
they lost they lost the series. Yes, yeah, I mean
(16:00):
you know that was that was okay? See if there
wasn't no Joe, Yeah, oh, I like that you got, Nate,
I gotta give something you can give. I'm a hype man.
That's my hype man. Ye are something focused. I'm hype man. Yeah, yeah,
so I get him hype and then heat going. I
(16:22):
don't wrap. I thought, okay, I thought about you gotta
excuse me because I'm rasping, probably screaming at from the game.
But everybody trying to wrap. It's always tragic. Shout out
to a show black magic. He can get on. We
(16:45):
gotta do our thing. Have everybody sit on. We gonna
keep popping. Ain't no stopping day you were searching, keep
rocking twenty years later. If you don't say it, then
you're a hater. Check the fader. I mean, that's not
red carpet you were swagged out talking about. You brought
the bags out and you're cooking. Got all them young girls.
(17:09):
Let me fall back real R and B and what
you call that? That was magic? Right? That was yeah?
All right? Now let's get back to it. Let's talk
a little bit of football. Yeah, Fox, this show is little, yeah,
(17:33):
no doubt, no doubt. But I jump up with the guys.
I know we usually do us on the back end,
you know, special occasion tonight. I don't want to do
the segment right now, and that's why I asked you guys,
you know something in the news or not right. So
obviously we just said the Warriors had that big loss
and it's kind of like the Oh Seven Paths and
the Seahawks and then you know the interception. So the
(17:54):
question to you guys all around is how do you
guys overcome a bad loss of Davcar in your situation?
Are there been movies where it's like, man, that movie
didn't really turn out like I wanted it to, do
you guys, do you guys find it easy to overcome
those are not? Well? I never let my mistakes or
losses define who I am. I try to make sure
that I I embrace it, I see what happens, and
(18:16):
then I always try to move forward. Um, if you
sit around harping on your losses and your mistakes, there's
never room for growth, right, So what would you say
was one of those movies though, Why the Fools Fall
in Love? And it wasn't because of the performances Why
the Fools Fall in Love. What happened is that Warner
Brothers got really excited about the film it was testing
(18:39):
through the roof. It was testing like out of a
hundred available. Um, so they which was a good sign
because it was a period piece. So they and it
was a star cut stead of cast Lorenz, Tate, halle Berry, Biboca,
Fox Leader Sean. So they rushed it out and at
the time, uh, they put us out against Studio fifty four. Uh.
Then they said, oh, and there's this little film that's
coming out that no one's gonna be care about called
(19:00):
rush Hour. All right, and rush Hower came out and everybody,
so you know that one. It was that I like,
I said, as a actor, and if I had was
a producer, I would have fought for no, don't do that.
The time to put it out is when you were
going to put out, which was supposed to been around
the holidays, when people are chilling. Perfect, Yeah, they go
(19:22):
watch a movie. You know, the parents would go watching
because it was a movie from the sixties. So yeah,
and they got and they put it out at the
end of the summer and it wasn't a summer movie. Well,
I'll tell you one thing. For me, in my entire career,
every huge loss has been followed by one of the
greatest victories in my life. Um, I looked back in college.
(19:43):
I went from two of the worst seasons in Penn
State history. Talk last year being in the three in
the country, win an Orange Bowl or second away from
a national type. There you go. You know, we lost
to Atlanta with seven seconds left. Russell Wilson let us
down the field in Seattle. Um, we scored, Atlanta came back,
kicked the field goal, beat us right the very next
(20:04):
year we win a Super Bowl. We win a Super
super Bowl. See there, there, you got what you're talking about,
learning from it and embracing your failure. And that's what
I think is wrong with a lot of our young people.
They don't fail enough. Well, that's because they want to
screen swipe it. Everything is so instant, do you know?
They don't want to work for do do the work
(20:26):
that it's so it's so instant. I'm an Instagram model,
I'm an Instagram star, but I'm a reality start that
I studied. I've been doing this for decades because you
have a it's a gift, you have a talent, you
work at it. Right now are becoming superstars with talent,
says by standing there and taking pictures and then they's altered.
(20:46):
You know, that's a whole another that's facts like that,
that's a whole another, that's a whole another show. We're
gonna talk about that next time next Moving on, football
is a team sport, just like most athletic team sports.
Now in Hollywood. In order to make a great project, um, yes,
(21:07):
I mean your projects were, Um, you gotta have great teammates. Yes.
Who are some of the best teammates in Hollywood. Some
of the greatest cast members that I've ever worked with,
Will Smith, More Chestnut, Uma Thurman, The director f Garry
Gray was amazing to work with. The director Quentin Tarantino
was amazing to work with. I've worked with, especially my
(21:28):
first five films, you know, from Independence Day, Set It Off,
Why the Foods, fall In Love, Kill Bill Got Booty
Call with Jamie and Tom Davis. Jamie went on Keep
It Real, Keep It Real was funny. It was funny.
You know, it's my critically acclaimed film. You know what
(21:49):
I'm saying. But you can play that game working with
think like most of the actors that I've co start
with have all went on to win Oscars. How Jamie
Queen Latifa was nominated for one. Uh geragi just want
to go Globe Awards. So you know, I've been working
with the best, so to have successful UM projects, you
(22:12):
need to work with the best. And I always embraced
that when I hear that other actors, No, I don't
want such a chuch to work with me. I don't
want to shine me. Baby. It ain't about that you shine,
I shine, We shine. That's facts. I can dig that,
no doubt. What about what about any bad teammates, anybody
you could put out there, you know and not put
out there, but tell us we didn't mesh Eric Roberts, uh,
(22:35):
Julie Roberts brother, and you know what, I've since seen
him and he came up and gave me a hug
because he knew he was being a jerk. Um. And
I just think that, you know, sometimes actors will try you.
I think he thought I was a lot younger than
I was. He didn't realize I was as old as
he was, you know what I mean. I was like, yo,
Donald becolling me crazy. But I've been doing this for
a long time too, so yeah, it's like, you know,
(22:56):
he's like, yeah, and you just gotta watch sometimes how
you talk to people. You're gonna talk to me crazy,
you know, don't talk to me crazy because I'm not
gonna talk to you the same respect that you want.
You know that I want, I'm going to give it
to you as well too. That's how we will make
a good project because I don't believe in having sets
where people are walking on eggshells. That's totally uncalled for.
We are there to work together to make a successful project.
(23:19):
So I don't have time to be mean of people
and yelling and craziness. I don't get down like and
for people that that don't know. Eric Roberts was Moroney
from The Dark Knight. He was a mob boss and
The Dark Knight. Yeah, like I said, not recently saw
him at a party for The Hateful Eight and he
walked over to me and and gave me hug because we
did another film together after we had worked together, and
I barely spoke to him. I would say good morning
(23:40):
and not keep it. Yeah. I don't gotta like you
to make money with you. And that's facts, all right.
Mike says, you asked that question. You know, I love
asking you questions. Give me a bad teammate that you
played with since you put me on. Oh yeah, no,
y'all chire yeah, uh man, bad bad team. Make you
(24:00):
know what I can't, or you can give me a
coach that's easier a bad coach. You know what. I
can't say he was a bad coach because this coach
was a awesome Hall of Fame player. Um, but he
he didn't know how to coach. And that's Mike single term. Um.
(24:20):
And I love really, I love him. Oh my god.
What has he since grown or was at the time.
At the time he was, he wasn't ready. I wasn't ready.
He wasn't ready. And that's real, that's real talks And
him and I have since talked and and he's like, Mike,
I didn't know what I was doing. Yeah, And that's
one thing I can say about Coach Sing. Coach Sing
(24:41):
always kept it funky, right, always kept it one hunting.
But he could not coach, not a head coach position coach.
He had usn't ate this fox twenty six straight days
of pads two a day, nobody does. But he was
wearing you guys, wearing this out. We went three, We
(25:03):
went three, and oh and then we lost the next eleven.
Oh that's awful, awful, And then the next year, see
what happens is you lose your job. Everybody. Yeah, four
and twelve, everybody, you're getting fired every Yeah, you players, everybody,
And that's what happens. I love the guy as a player,
love the guys. He wasn't ready for the coach. How
(25:26):
about you? Yeah, come on the uh you know, I'm
pretty much nice guy, get along with everybody, as we
all see. But that he didn't mean to let me
dive into my rookie year. Um, you know, the great
Randy Moss. He was a guy who he didn't talk
(25:46):
to rookies. He didn't It's almost he didn't want to
invest his time and a guy that he didn't know,
um cared about the game as much as he did
or wasn't going to be there in a matter of months.
So when I got drafted, was in awe of him.
He was a super stories Randy Moss. So, um, they
draft me as a young wide receiver, and all I
(26:07):
want to do is for him to say, Hi, I
just just talked to me, and I don't even give
me one of these That's all. That's all I'm saying.
And I would I would sit there and I would
stare at him. I would bring up conversation and he
would walk off. He would run off. We're being conditioning,
and I remember Tremaine Dubree just dropped the video and
I was like, yo, Germaine Dupre had to Marshall Jersey
on from you in college. We're running winsprints and he
looked at me and just can't running. And that's how no, no, no,
(26:33):
no, no no, no no, I don't believe that. These guys
that believe that, let's leave. At that time, I thought
to myself, man, this dude is a jerk. But that
was I just got there. I was like a month
or so in and then came training camp. I stopped
focusing on him being a star and me being the
(26:55):
best wide receiver? How about that? And I kicked ass.
All of a sudden, he wanted to talk to you.
He was like, it's almost like he embraced the fact
that I love the game as much as he did.
Because what I understood at that point is there's seventy
some guys on the team. Not everybody's gonna give as
much effort to this game. So it was almost like
he was saying, like, don't be concerned about all the
other stuff. Don't be concerned about me being a star
(27:17):
or how much you like me do the work. Yeah,
but you know see that there's a difference in that.
Like for me when I when I work with young actors,
I embraced them, right, you know what I mean because
it maybe the only time that they ever worked with
a Vivica Fox. So how I just figured, like, I
guess it's different for you guys because people get cut
blah blah blah blah blah blah. For me, I would
(27:37):
never want someone to walk away and say I met
her and she was such a right And I agree
because I'm the opposite. So what I took from that
situation is whenever there's a young guy, I embrace him wholeheartedly.
I know you can identify with this. There's young actress
is actors that come up in Hollywood that are really
there to be your replacement. They're younger and it's going
to happen that Yeah, And for me, I would talk
(28:03):
to these young receivers and say, look, you're here to
take my job. You're younger, you're cheaper, and if you
do your job, I shouldn't be here next year. And
I'm gonna give you all the tools you need. Leving
years later, Nate still in it. Good for you a TV.
We got one more or no before we Yeah, we
gotta wrap the show here in a minute, but really quick.
(28:24):
And this legitimately is yes or not. I have a question.
We gotta be quick. He's stop. No, I love hey.
I wish we could stay here for another twenty minutes,
but you gotta go do access. But the question is,
guys And the last week that O. J. Simpson doc
was on ESPN, everyone was talking about it. So I
(28:45):
gotta ask you, guys man, let's keep it all the
way real, all the way from O J. Simpson. Do
it came down on I lose my black card. If
I answered this, it was a crime of passion. I
was glued to that, to that court case years ago.
It was a crime of passion, simple as that. Thank you.
(29:09):
One plus one always equals too and I'm close out
on that. A reason for his blood and the cut.
It was too many cowinky dinkies and they had a
past of domestic violence, so it was a crime pass
still got love with the Jews. That black car. I
just lost my black car. But it's all because you
(29:32):
would never wanted to happen to one of your darks, right,
are you right? Not right? Honestly, I believe he did it.
I mean, and it's okay, the all the way real.
At the time, I was growing up in Lagas, Nigeria.
But even back then, my whole family was on team
o J. Like I was saying, person and then I
was young, and now I looked back and I'm like, damn,
but you know what was crazy? Johnny Copran played that,
(29:57):
played that no theory like a fiddle. He's smart. He
got a jury of I think it was either eight
African American women who would be mad at o J.
It was a whole race card there. It was a
strategic chess masch chess match what they played. And then
the public the defenders that they basically gave uh that
(30:18):
defended the Marcial car and they was new booties, they
didn't even have nothing. They it was like the varsity
playing against the reserves and yeah, and they just not
smart at them. Yeah, that's it for this week's show
than for coming. I mean, it really was. We'll see
your interview on Total Access later. Okay, you gotta you,
(30:39):
gotta you guys, please check out Independence Day. Research is
busting dropping June twenty four. If we back y'all, oh
