Speaker 2 (00:22):
Good Morning Football.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
All right, well, welcome back to Good Morning Football. I'm
Jane Slater and we are thrilled to be with Jace
mccordy and Kyle Brant and Peter Schrager. Let's just go
ahead and get right into it. We were trained into
a six pack of quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
Pretty interesting.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Let's get into it. Let's recap it.
Speaker 5 (00:41):
With the first pick in the twenty twenty four NFL brand.
Speaker 6 (00:44):
Chicago Bear select Caleb Williams Caleb Rose on the wrong.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
Touchtow he is the first quarterback in the country.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Washington Commander select Jayden Daniel Good and.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
There he goes again, Jana and Daniels.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
He he's got another touchdown.
Speaker 6 (01:02):
The New England Patriots select.
Speaker 5 (01:03):
Drake May taking a shot.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
The Alena Falcons like Michael wow Junior.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Lofside Pedix touchdown, Michael Fannix, j J.
Speaker 6 (01:16):
McCarthy party on the round.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Bone Knicks.
Speaker 6 (01:21):
Six quarterbacks in the first dozen picks, Bone Nicks, you
have me six, all right.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I gotta ask you and we'll start with you, Peter.
Which rookie quarterback situation is the most intriguing. I saw
a really funny thing on Twitter. It was a Sports
Illustrated cover and it was people trying to side if
Cam Newton, Jake Locker, or Blaine Gabbert were going to
be the guys. We put so much stock into these
rookie quarterbacks, so many expectations, especially when they're picked so
high in the first round. Which one stands out to
(01:50):
you the most.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Let's go from the back to the front on this one.
I'm gonna go with the twelfth overall pick in the
last of the quarterbacks. No, that would be bone Nicks,
who I had in my mock draft yesterday, going to
the Denver Broncos twelfth overall and got a lot of
pushback saying, well they like him, sure, but they're gonna
trade back and they'll they'll move back and then they'll
get bon Nicks. I'll tell you this, Sean Payton was
(02:13):
not getting cute here. Sean Payton wanted bo Nicks, and
when he was still on the board at twelve, they
made the pick and they were happy with it. Here's
so many stories about combine visits and pro days and
Top thirty visits. Peyton wanted to test the metal of
Bo Nicks's ability to devise a game plan and be
able to comprehend what his offense was. When they had
(02:36):
their workout with bo Nicks the night before, they offered
him three different sheets of paper with a bunch of
different concepts.
Speaker 6 (02:43):
They said, you can study this and then we're gonna
want to.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Quiz you on it. The next day, Nicks came.
Speaker 6 (02:47):
In and had it and was absolutely nails.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Sean Payton talking to him last night, he said, look,
Shrake's he's the most accurate quarterback in college football history.
That's what we're getting here. He's the guy that I
think I can run my offense with. And oh, by
the way, we still have Zach Wilson, we still have
Jared Stidham. It's going to obviously be an interesting room
of young quarterback. I find it interesting that Nicks, who
(03:11):
played six years of college ball, started sixty one different
college games, and his most accurate quarterback, well, he's taken
twelfth overall, and people are like, they reach, they reached.
Look like we talked about with Pennix, if you need
a quarterback, if you want a quarterback, it's really your
own value because it is by far the most important
position on a team. So they didn't trade back. They
(03:32):
take him at twelve. And I'll tell you the Broncos
are ecstatic to have bo Nix as their quarterback.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
It's very exciting to answer Wes. It's going to be
a rock and roll next year. Let's talk about Drake May.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
Let's do it, because all we heard about was the
Patriots may trade back.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
They may trade back, they may not do it, they
may go jj this. They took Drake May.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
There was a no doubt of the first three pictures
went bang, bang bang. You know what's so fun about
this time right now for us in the media is
we did a lot of crossover with ESPN.
Speaker 6 (03:55):
A lot of NFL Network, ESPN Love.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
I was watching Reheese Davis the other day, So Reece
Davis is sitting out with Rich and Rich just says,
you know what has your interest in the draft, and
Rees Daevisuno is probably more about college football anybody alive, says,
whoever drafts Drake May wins the draft.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
That's it.
Speaker 6 (04:10):
He is the guy. I've never seen anything like it.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
He was doing backflips for Drake May, who, frankly, I
think in the context of this class has been a
little under celebrated because there's so many other shiny objects
that Patriot get Drake May and I think Peter, I
think they get him in this nice time for May.
Where's it's not post Brady, that's all over. This is
not Jay Field, liber Payson Marino is a fresh start,
(04:33):
fresh coach. This is not the Belichick Patriots. It is
a huge, strong, corn fed athlete. Now the weapons are concerning,
He's gonna walk in there, He's gonna have to dodge this,
dodge that, or maybe Jacoby versettis play. I don't even know,
but I like that the Patriots made it desertively obviously,
you said Sean Payton, Lake Boonick Rod Mayo liked Drake
May and they have a new quarterback in Foxborough.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
He's huge, he's strong, and.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
My favorite term this draft season has been big game hunter.
Speaker 6 (04:59):
Do you think the Patriots need a little big game hunting?
They were shut out twice last year at home. We
got big game hunter in New England. I think it's
very exciting.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
It is very exciting.
Speaker 7 (05:08):
Drake May is a guy that they fell in love
with and we're very comfortable taking him at three, assuming
that Jayden Dams were going second off the board, and
to your point, Kyle, I fully expect Jr. Kobe Brissett
to be the guy early on there in New England
as they continue to build that roster around the quarterback
position before Drake May gets his opportunity to get out
there and play. I'm looking sure you start all the
(05:28):
way at the end in Bowl Nicks. I'm going to
JJ McCarthy in Minnesota because this was a guy, a
prospect that we all talked about leading up to the
draft and there were so many questions about his production,
what he was actually do at Michigan.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
Well, he's a.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Winner in tangible all of these things. Does that result
in him.
Speaker 7 (05:45):
Being a cold football quarterback that can go out there
and win you games. JJ McCarthy doesn't go in the
top five. He ends up going tenth to the Minnesota
FI because we move up just one spot to get
him there. For JJ McCarthy, you talk about intriguing situations,
how about getting drafted to the NFL and having Justin
Jefferson on one side, Jordan Addison Hawkinson when he gets healthy,
(06:05):
and then oh yeah, we're going to bring in Aaron
Jones at the running back spot.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
But what he was able to do at Michigan.
Speaker 7 (06:10):
Now you give him a team that's loaded with guys
on the offense and his play caller and Kevin O'Connell
is huge. And what I love when he got drafted
is listening to the phone call between him and Adophie
Mensa and also Kevin O'Connell talking about him becoming their
new quarterback. Yes, Sam Darnold's there, but a lot of
belief in JJ McCarthy. He told those coaches, I promise
you one thing. If you brought me there, we were
(06:32):
going to win. And that's what JJ McCarthy has represented.
Let's see if he can do it in Minnesota. Who's
the team and who's the quarterback that you're rolling with.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I love all of your picks, I mean Bo Nicks
when we talk about JJ McCarthy, Drake May, but I'm
going with Caleb Williams. I know that seems a little obvious, guys,
but I'm going with him for a little bit of
a different reason. Typically, when you're picking a guy number
one overall, he's coming in with not a lot of
things in the cupboard, right, Imagine this situation. Maybe you
guys can help me with a little bit of football
history here, but I can't think of a time where
(07:01):
you've seen a quarterback drafted number one overall walk into
with a guy like DeAndre Swift, Khalil Herbert, DJ Moore,
Keenan Allen Cole commit. He's not walking into a rebuild
like guys like Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Bryce Young, held
justin Field, Troy Aitman.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
I have talked about this in years past.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
You know, he talked about how brutal his first two
years in Dallas. So while I's exciting it, imagine the
pressure and expectations when you're in your own thoughts are overwhelming.
Most competitors will say they love it, but it is
a lot of pressure. I do like that. We heard
one of his responses was when it was you know,
after you won the Heisman, after you know, you did
what you did with USC, after going number one and
(07:40):
overall in the draft, what is your next line of business?
And he said to get to know all of his teammates'
names and their family members. And so I think it's
the right approach. It's the way to endear yourself to
the locker room. But I am going to be really
interested to see how this plays out, because we should
all expect him to do great, but sometimes me and
those expectations are a little overwhelming.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
It's true. And listen, I feel like we haven't heard
from Bryce Young since last year. You know what I'm saying.
We were we were covering the draft last year.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Same reaction.
Speaker 6 (08:07):
Yeah, it's exciting we got him, but then what he
showed up for was very difficult. I think Jane makes
a great point that this.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
Is not some terrible reth of talent bears teams like
Caleb walks in and let's drive this thing now. I
have a lot of thoughts personally and what Caleb means
to Chicago.
Speaker 6 (08:23):
He shows up in a loaded huddle, just ready to rock.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
And roll real quick. We started the show with Pennix,
where we've talked a lot about Pennix might have been
a shocking pick of all, but he's probably not going
to see the field right away. A lot of these
guys and you know they're gonna have to figure it out,
and Drake may is gonna probably wait behind their trade.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
But like bow Knicks could win that job.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
He has played sixty one college games and basically should
have been a four year player in the NFL already,
and I think it's the same age Aszach Wilson, Like
there's gonna be expectation for all of these guys. Caleb
Williams right out of the shoot, like you're starting day one,
let's go.
Speaker 7 (08:53):
We think, Jen, he's got to be out there and
it's going to be so much fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
And Jane, you said it.
Speaker 7 (08:57):
He talked about caring about the people that are going
to be in that organization.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
But he also got Rollma Dunes.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
They had Nomber nine, and we talked about what they
were going to go and what they were going to do.
They got another receiver for him to go alongside what
we talked about in Keenan Allen and Dj Moore. So
it doesn't get any better than that. And you talk
about in the first round, we said six quarterbacks go
in the first twelve picks. All six of them aren't
going to be fantastic football players, hall of famers and.
Speaker 6 (09:22):
All of that.
Speaker 7 (09:23):
So it's really hard to say, all right, this guy's
going to be successful.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
We have no idea what's going to happen.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
But at the same time, it's awesome to see Caleb
Williams in the situation that he's walking into and the
weapons that he's going to have around him, and a
Bear team that caught fire later in the season whose
defense was absolutely rolling as well.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
I look at it this with Caleb and it's like
you've got to do and today. But you also add
in Keenan Allen, which you mentioned, you have DJ Moore,
you have all this stuff, that situation in the NFC
North for Caleb. If it doesn't succeed, like they're gonna
be expectations. This isn't one of those where's Bryce Young
and they are right Carolina Chicago Bears. So to me,
this is all those solid It's not going to be easy.
Speaker 8 (10:03):
You can't have like the starter season where you're like
six and eleven. I will say this though, seven and
five last year at USC, like that might have been
the best thing for Caleb and this whole pre draft
process where people were tearing him down a bit, because
I almost would rather have a quarterback who's been through
a little bit adversity like Michael Pennix with the knees
and the whole like, Okay, he's been there.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
JJ McCarthy. We could do flips and everything twenty seven
and one, has never lost the game. It's been this thing, smile,
the Michigan man, the whole thing. He's never had that
seven and five season. He's never had that that brutal
have to overcome. So all these guy situations are interesting,
and for Caleb Bllliams think the best thing that might
have happened was a seven and five season last year
where people were trashing them throughout the entire campaign.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
And it's what we do.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
We will always compare JJ and Caleb, same draft class,
same division, but.
Speaker 6 (10:45):
At least twice a year. That's just what we do.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Ten years from no, I'll be like, man, that guy
really won that one.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
Maybe it's JJ. I don't know, But right now the
Caleb thing's very exciting. The video of him and a
Duneese like really cool.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
That could be all timer or it could be all
time freezing cold takes. We don't know, but we have it.
We're gonna be seeing that for years.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
I know it's hard for you and our boy, big Cat.
You guys are long suffering Bears fans. Matt Eberflus and
Ryan Poles have really been through it. But now there's
this excitement we saw I mean, I don't know if
you guys saw the mock ups for the new stadium
right there on the lake with that incredible view of downtown.
My brother lives in Chicago, so I got a free
place to say to go check those things out. But
(11:24):
it's so fun to see some optimism around that team.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
You know what market. So I can't hide money.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
I can't hide mine because I don't have any guys.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
It's like, where are they going to park at that stadium?
Speaker 6 (11:36):
It's like, well, there's boat docks right there.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
My brother's yat off.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
We're good.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
I wish morning.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Every year we go through and it's called the Frenzy.
I like to hashtag my tweets regn zy. And there's
a flury of moves and sometimes you're like, so many
moves are happening at once, how do I keep track?
Some moves on paper, you say, that's great, they don't
work out. Others they do. I am gonna go position
(12:20):
by position in some key spots and give you my
free agent all fit team. What's that mean? The players
who I think landed in the perfect spots. And I'm
gonna start with the quarterback position. My best fit for
any of the free agent quarterbacks. Is a guy who's
going back to where he played last year. I think
Baker Mayfield staying put in Tampa Bay is a home run.
(12:42):
This was awesome. Last year, the Buccaneers had no expectations.
It was the post Tom Brady era. Mike Evans was
saying before the season, he's done negotiating, He'll be somewhere
else at the end of the season. And yet Baker
Mayfield comes in and completely turns things around. They started
out red hot. They beat the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota
in Week one. Then they went through a loll They
(13:02):
lost a bunch of games in a row, like the
bloom was off the rose. And then Baker found a
way to get to that second gear and get them
not only in the playoffs, but then to win a
playoff game. Baker Mayfield an awesome Tampa Bay buccaneer. He
fits the culture of the team perfectly. He's got all
the weapons around him with Godwin and Evans and the
(13:23):
young running back for Shad White, and he goes back
to where he belongs. I said this earlier on. There
was a real chance that Baker was going somewhere else.
There were some hairy moments in these negotiations where Baker said,
I want to test my market on on the value
on the market. I want to see what I'm worth,
and if you're not going to pay me x, I
might entertain those offers. Well. Right before the start of
the legal tampering window, the Buccaneers made sure to keep
(13:46):
their guy in Tampa. I love this fit for Baker,
I love this fit for the Buccaneers. I'm so happy
that it continues for at least the next couple of years.
Quarterback best fit out of all these signings is the
guy who went back to where he was. It's Baker Mayfield.
Next up is the running back position. This one week,
give me Derek Henry Lamar Jackson in a back up.
(14:06):
I know this is gonna work. I know this is
gonna be sensational. And I thought on Monday it was
wild running back going here, running back going here, running
back going there, And then on Tuesday I think this
is such an awesome fit. I think it's the team.
I think it's the culture of that team. I also
think it's the city. This is a team that has
gotten so close the last few years. The Baltimore Ravens
(14:30):
they were the hottest team in football in nineteen. This
guy crushed their dreams. We go back four years later,
they get back to the Big Dance. They win their
playoff game against Houston. They then host the Chiefs and
they completely abandon the run in the second half. Are
they abandoning the run? If this guy's at running back,
I'm not so sure. I love Derek Henry as a player.
I think he's a future Hall of Famer. I really
(14:50):
do think he's the best running back of his generation.
And you might say, yeah, well look at McCaffrey. Now, yeah, McCaffrey,
Now you're talking about since twenty eighteen, this guy has
been putting a big season after big season, and does
he still have anything left in the tank. Last year,
in the final game of the Titan season, next Gen
stats clocked this guy. He had a run that was
twenty two miles per hour. Still go, He could still move,
(15:13):
and he can still give you that stiff arm right
to the face. I love this look. Sakwan goes to
the Eagles, We'll see Tony Poller to the Titans, We'll
see I love this fit. And if Derrick Henry can
get a Super Bowl ring with Lamar Jackson by his side.
How cool would that be for one of the greatest
running backs of all Peter? How great is it gonna be?
Speaker 9 (15:32):
The team intros in Baltimore? Like, I think you just
sent Lamar and Derek out of the tunnel and that's it.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Like close, let's go, Let's go down to the offensive line.
Jonah Jackson signing with the La Rams is my call.
I love this dude right here, big boy number seventy
three goes to the raisbies. Like, who's Jonah Jackson? Is
just a wall, just an enormous offensive guard. And I
(15:57):
was talking to the Rams guys after the signing was announced.
Here's the deal. It's his fifth NFL season, all right.
He's six ' four, three hundred and twenty pounds. He
gave up just two total sacks his last two years.
And they have him on one side, and they've got
Dots in the other guard who they got from Pittsburgh
on the other. And with the center, that's a thousand
(16:18):
pounds of just giant men ready to maul and create
holes for Kieren Williams. And oh yeah, by the way,
keeping Matthew Stafford up straight. Jonah Jackson had a big market.
He chooses to go to the Rams, not a household name,
and yet you look what the Lion's success was. A
lot of that had to do with not only Pinney Sewell,
not only to do with Taylor Decker, but the guys inside.
(16:41):
Jonah Jackson was amazing last year for them. It's been
a very good Lion. He's had some injuries at times,
but I think with the Rams you're gonna see immediate results.
I love the fit. Just keep Matthew Stafford upright and
give the Rams a chance to breathe. All right, next position,
we're going defense, and I'm going the best fit for
all the defensive line inside guys is going to be
(17:01):
Christian Wilkins to the Raiders. I said it yesterday. Has
ever been a more Raiders signing than Christian Wilkins. Antonio
Pierce comes out, He's like, we're going back to the Raiders' way.
We're going back to Al Davis. Might have to go
back to some things that you know, might be a
little bit unsavory at times for our opponents. Well guess
what that is? What he's all about. He's a tremendous player,
Don't get it wrong. He is a tremendous player. He's
(17:23):
also a tremendous agitator. He loves getting under your skin.
Josh Allen's spoken about it. Plenty of people who have
been in this building on our show have talked about it.
It is a pain in the butt to face Christian Wilkins.
And then he's going to do something afterwards, some extracurriculars
to get in your head. He Max Crosby, Tyree Wilson.
We're talking. You've got the big boy inside. You've got
(17:45):
all of these guys that are coming together, and all
of a sudden, the Raiders defensive line is one of
the best in football. Love what the Raiders did. And Jason,
you so smartly mentioned this yesterday. He goes to Vegas
and you're like, all right, took the money. He goes
to Vegas. I guess no. His best season was with
Patrick Graham as his defensive coordinator in Miami. There's a
familiarity there. Patrick Graham is now the defensive coordinator in Vegas.
(18:08):
I love the fit. Christian Wilkins. Congratulations, he got paid
and I think he went to the perfect place. All right,
So that's the How about d M? How about off
the Edge?
Speaker 4 (18:18):
What you got.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
How about our guy, Brian Burns. I gotta say I
went big yesterday. Giants fans are like hitting me up,
like really, really, Brian burg You're talking about Brian Burns
like he was Lawrence Taylor. I got, maybe I went
a little overboard, but you see some of the moves
that Brian Burns has off the edge, and the fact
that he's only twenty five years old, and now you
say you're putting him on a defense with Thibodeau on
one side, with Dexter Lawrence in the middle, and the
(18:40):
opportunities are endless. Brian Burns to the Giants a fantastic fit.
Brian Burns fits that New York Giants mantra of let's
stop the run, let's get to the quarterback, let's run
the ball, and let's win some football games in the trenches.
They've gotten away from that in recent years. Burns brings
that there's been footage online. Go on your Twitter and
go on Instagram Burns' spin moves. This guy is a technician.
(19:04):
And again I mentioned this, he is only twenty five
years old. I thought this was a major bargain what
they got him for a second and a fifth and yes,
they paid him the money, but to me for what
the Rams were offering to get Brian Burns a couple
of years ago, and now for what the Giants got
him for. Hey, don't blame him for Carolina struggles. The
last two seasons. That team has been an absolute mess.
(19:27):
Brian Burns, he has never said a bad word about
that franchise and he has been awesome. Bring him to
the Big Apple. Let's see him do some work, all right, now,
the linebacker spot. And after all that rumors of like
is he going to Seattle where he's gonna be with
Mike McDonald Patrick Queen signs with the Steelers, really, really
the Steelers and I kind of like it. You're not
gonna pay me, put me on the franchise tag, all
(19:49):
this stuff. Let me go to our arch rivals and
let me face you two times a year. But beyond that,
to be able to play with not only TJ. Watt,
but to play with high Smith as well. And now
you put him in the middle. And there's such a
rich tradition of middle linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. You
go through the years, whether it be the Lambert and
Ham era or even recently with Levon Kirkland and Jason
(20:11):
Gilden and all those guys in the linebacker position. There
is such a rich tradition of great linebacker play in Pittsburgh.
Patrick Queen so happy for him. He finally gets paid
and he gets his respect. Guys, I go to you
at the table. It's my all fit team. Guys that
just made sense and teams that made sense for them.
I love it.
Speaker 7 (20:30):
And you start out that quarterback position. Baker Mayfield, he
stays home. Now, Kirk Cousins, he joins the division. I'm
fascinated to see which team comes out of that division
for the playoff. Those two are going to match up
twice a year. I can't wait to see those two.
Speaker 9 (20:42):
All agitator team might go to the Raiders defensively, it
is a little terrifying to consider the Tyrie Wilson. Is
it kind of a blank slate when it comes to
the NFL. Yet now the people that are influencing his
behavior in the field are Caryland Wilkins at Max Crosby.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
My god, yeah, and the guy inside is that guy
Kootz who I doesn't watch. Was a mixed up last year.
He showed up. They're super excited guys. All fit team.
I love all of these fits for which one of
these is a very good job. We appreciate it. Good
morning football,
