Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Pittsburgh Steelers postgame show. It was presented by doing
it Right roofing, sighting and remodeling home of the Lifetime
Workmanship warranty.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
The defense wasn't historic, but it was recognizable. Dashed on
the ground, big plays down the field, and an inability
to get off the field frustrated for Openers in East Rutherford,
New Jersey. If you tuned into Steelers Jets unaware of
the identity of the Jets punter, you still didn't know
after two quarters. Fortunately for the Steelers there was a
second half, and Aaron Rodgers and Chris Boswell and Jalen Ramsey.

(00:35):
They made the Jets punt twice in the final two quarters.
Austin McNamara did the honors, but they never did stop
the run, not at least until they absolutely positively had to.
The Steelers didn't run the ball either, but a first
possession touchdown drive engineered by Rogers, and a last possession
march for a sixty yard field goal sandwiched around three

(00:55):
of Rogers' four passing teds proved to be just enough.
In the The defense rose up. Finally, after Boswell hit
from sixty they escaped from New York but historic more
like horrific for openers. On to Seattle. Good afternoon, and
welcome to the Steelers postgame show on the Steelers Audio Network.

(01:17):
Mike Persuda along with Charlie Batch, we're going to try
to get to the bottom of Steelers thirty four Jets
thirty two. But Charlie, I don't know that we have
enough time.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
It is crazy when you look at the stats across
the board. If somebody was just looking at it, there's
no way that they think the Steelers will win because
they were dominated in every category except the turnover. That
turnover was critical because they were able to create the
turnover and turn that into points and that ultimately was
the difference in his game.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
And it came on special teams. Mike Tomlin emphasizing throughout
the preseason he was looking for offensive guys who could tackle,
and defensive guys who could block. And Kenneth Gainwell, who
couldn't block on a blitz protection late in the game,
which almost cost him, but he got the ball out

(02:05):
and Bence Gronnick fell on it, and that was part
of that two touchdowns in fifty seconds, uh span that
you know, when they came out at halftime Mike Tomins
said they had a chance to do the double score
thing right because they'd scored at the end of the
first half, and he thought that could change the climate. Well,
that didn't happen, but that that quick double touchdown thing
in a minute changed the climate. That made it a
different game, and they were able to sneak out of

(02:27):
it with a W four one two, three, three, three
nine three eight three is our number. We've already got
a bunch of people lined up, So let's get to
him Parks in Catanna. You're leading off tonight or this
afternoon with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
Hey man, it's great to get you get bick it
back to you, guys.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
What do you got parts?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
So I got Our offense looked progressive going throughout the game.
They looked atter, getting better, a little more communication. Uh,
looked like a bit of emsmunication. Aaron Rodgers looked a
bit frustrated. I'm asking, is the offense Obviously we're learning
new quarterback, new systems where we're trying to implement these things.

(03:09):
The Jeff defense is pretty solid. A lot of young,
good players on that team, a lot of good, young,
good athletes.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
The big thing.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
Here man, is we got to get that run game
going because I'm seeing a lot of short passes that
aren't working. They're able to key in on the guys
short and short downs not converting our third downs like
you know we've seen a years past. But I think
I liked everything I saw with how Aaron Rodgers progressed.
But there seemed to be a bit of frustration between

(03:38):
your communication between players not being there or whatever it
might be. I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts on it.
And then a quick shout out to my sister who
just had a little baby girl, Piper two days ago.
And you know, God blessed, and I appreciate you guys best,
the best foundation You are the best, So keep rolling,
guys now.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
I appreciate that big shout out the Piper early. Yes,
and another Steelers fan that we have as we're nurturing
into this Steelers nation.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
But I thought Mike Tumbell was talking about new Steelers,
new Steelers fans.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
There you go, absolutely, and I agree with you. And
that was one of the things that concerned me coming
into this game was communication by the offensive line. Because
your best run blocking or your best lineman in general
Isaac say Malo. He didn't practice the majority of training camp,
but yet he came back last week, so essentially he
had probably five or six practices to really communicate back

(04:26):
with the rest of the guys who were actually playing
in this game. And you saw that showing up a
little bit from as the game went on. They'll clean
that up. Anytime that you now are playing on the road,
you're going to have some of those problems as well. Now,
if that problem continues heading into Acorshore next week, when
crowd noise should not be a factor, then that's where
I'll start to become concerned, going to alarming if that

(04:48):
doesn't get cleaned up in a hurry. But I expect
that piece of it to get cleaned up.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah. No, I wasn't expecting what we saw today. I
wasn't expecting thirty four points, definitely, but I did and
to disipate some of the rough edges that you saw,
some of the things that need to be ironed out
because these guys have not played in the preseason together
and I'm not trying to make a commentary that they
should have or anything like that. I get they don't
want to get him hurt and a lot of them

(05:12):
are experienced. But this is where you are and you
just can't replicate and practice what you're getting in the
stadium on game day.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Can you struck correct? And you look at the sack,
everybody will say Roger Jones gave up a big sack
at the towards the end of the game. If you
look at that play, communication was saying, hey, everybody, slide
to the right. Broderick, I don't know if he got
that call, and when you look at it, it doesn't
look like he got the call. He was late, got
beat in sat and that's what caused the sack with
Roger's there so or at least penetration and pressure. So

(05:42):
those are things when you talk about just cleaning up.
You hope that it doesn't continue next week when you
are at home because crowd nois shouldn't be a factor.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Parks, Thanks for the call and congratulations. We're gonna try
to keep moving on here because we've got a lot
of people lined up. Dave in Florida. You're up next
with Michael Charlie. How are you, Dave? All right? Guys?

Speaker 6 (05:59):
Good, so.

Speaker 7 (06:02):
Good to be one to know.

Speaker 8 (06:04):
You know, it's a little ugly.

Speaker 9 (06:07):
Left golf flash year, getting gage gouged on the run
up where.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
We were, Dave, your phone, your phone's cutting out. Maybe
try to give us a call back. Uh, let's move
it on to Jeff in Ohio. You're up with Mike
and Charlie.

Speaker 10 (06:22):
Kind of a bizarre start for the year with not
seeing any of these guys playing pre season. It was
just kind of unusual getting your first look in a
real game. But you know, it's one game, and I
always say, you know, don't overreact, win or lose. But
me and with that being said, there's some big questions
I have for you guys to run defense. Obviously it
was atrocious. We got dominating trenches on both sides of

(06:43):
the ball. So I had two questions. For one, the
old line obviously, Uh, you know, Roger Jones is low
hanging food. I mean, he didn't have a varsity performance today,
but with a Rod's age and kind of mobility, he
played great. Don't don't get me wrong. I thought he
had a game and was the key to the win.
But his giving him time is obviously paramount.

Speaker 11 (07:05):
Is what can we do?

Speaker 10 (07:06):
I know Charlie just talked about this a little bit
about schematics. Maybe is it calls, but we got to
buy him a little time to make plays.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
I think what they got to do is run the
ball correct and then they're not eleven guys aren't teeing
off knowing they can't run. Broaderick did not have a
varsity game, but that group of five has got to
do better getting that running game going, and then you
have a chance to keep Rogers upright.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
And too both of your points. If you don't run
the football, there's no point of play action because they're
not going to bite on the play action. And that's
why you have to establish that early in which we
know Arthur Smith wants to run the football, He's not
going to shy away from him. From an attempt standpoint,
he tried, it just wasn't there today.

Speaker 10 (07:48):
One of the questions I tim this was more on
the defensive side, and I just thought with all the
investment we've made with the big contracts and things and
free agents we brought in, and I thought Ramsey was awesome.
That hip was fantastic. I think he brings a great mentality.
I know you guys had talked about the violence in
the preseason, and I love seeing that. But it's just like,

(08:09):
we shouldn't be this bad. We shouldn't be getting dominated
in the trenches. And I thought on the double teams,
our guys were just getting driven off the ball and
our linebackers couldn't get off blocks, couldn't get into the gaps.
Is so my question is, do you guys steel it's
more of a schematic issue or is it just personnel
to where we got to get better. We don't have
the right guys. You know what can we do now?

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Just got to play better. Mike Tomlin emphasized all week
in practice and he said the exact same thing during
his coming out of the locker room interview with Evan Washburn.
Got a woo blocks and make tackles, and they did
not do that. The Jets play way better than they
did in the trenches today. Do I want to go
out and get all new guys on the defensive line
and all new guys on the offensive line? No, I

(08:50):
do not. But they lost both of those battles today
and Aaron Rodgers and Chris Boswell and in the very end,
Jalen Ramsey saved their bacon. We got to run to
a break. Appreciate the phone call. You are listening to
the Steelers Postgame Show on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which presented by Doing It
Right Roofing, siting and Remodeling, home of the lifetime workmanship Warranty.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Welcome back to the Steelers Postgame Show on the Steelers
Audio Network. Mike Pursuda and Charlie match with you in
the way cause Steelers thirty four Jets thirty two. You know,
if I was on a newspaper copy desk and I
had to write a hammer headline to sum up this game,
it would be escape from New York. Too easy. There
you go, but it applies. Time now for Maxi's Takeaways

(09:39):
that's brought to you by S and T Bank. For
every takeaway from the defense this season, S and T
Bank will donate three hundred dollars to PA Wounded Warriors
who have helped over eighteen thousand veterans and counting. Color
analyst Max starts joining us for Maxis takeaways, And Max,
I heard you in the immediate aftermath. The excitement in
your voice was getting me excited. And then I remembered

(10:01):
they could not stop the run, and they could not
run and I thought, Man, this ain't cutting it. Uh,
what was going wrong there? Basically, let me bring it
down as fast as I possibly can by talking about
the negative here to get started. What that run defense
in particular was scary bad?

Speaker 12 (10:18):
Uh?

Speaker 13 (10:18):
It was.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
It was a tough day.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
But I think.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Max's speeciless. Uh that wasn't working. We'll try Max again
here in a minute, see if we can't get that
cranked up. But uh, yeah, Charlie, don't. I don't think
it's personnel and I don't think it's schematics. I think
they just got beat. They did.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
And when you look at just coming in to this
defensive front in this game, you have everybody from last
year with the exception of Derek Harmon and that's why
they went out in the first round to draft him.
So he's not there. I know, ya Black was his replacement.
Laud him played a lot in this particular game. But
they have some things that they need to clean up
in a hurry. Because once you but on film and
you have a team that is rushing in the manner

(11:03):
that the Jets did today, that's something every team is
going to attempt to do moving forward. Until you stop
the bleeding describing on a.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Phone call while we continue to try to get Max starts. Nope, nope,
we got Max back on the line. Max, you were saying,
not only.

Speaker 14 (11:19):
Did you put my balloon and g also cut my
phone line. You didn't want to hear my comments like that?

Speaker 15 (11:24):
Bad?

Speaker 5 (11:26):
But no, I think when you look at.

Speaker 14 (11:28):
It, it's tough when you have such an a depth
and capable runner in justin fields that you can't be
as aggressive. Because we saw when they were aggressive, that's
when he was going to make you pay. I thought
the Steelers did a decent job of changing the tempo
and adjusting and not trying to blow through a gap
and be so aggressive. You saw to be a little

(11:49):
bit more patient. I thought that's why you had more
success later in the game.

Speaker 16 (11:53):
But it will.

Speaker 14 (11:56):
It's engaging from blocks and I think not having your
full complement of guys. I think Derek Harmy is one
of those.

Speaker 7 (12:03):
Guys that can add.

Speaker 14 (12:04):
An additional pop to that game because he knows absorbed
the double teams and they were trying to run away
from Cam Hayward and a lot of those and let's
race it.

Speaker 10 (12:13):
Breeseall the heck of.

Speaker 14 (12:14):
A running back, great vision, great contact, balance made for
a tough day and floppy tackling.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
Now I know you've touched on the defensive side of
the ball, flipped to the offensive side of the ball
and the trenches there. Now we expected to run the
football a lot better today. Only fifty three yards rushing,
but talk about the communication that needs to be had
up front to get that running game going.

Speaker 14 (12:37):
Well.

Speaker 10 (12:38):
I believe one of the biggest things was you didn't have.

Speaker 14 (12:44):
On the interior. Williams made it very tough on the inside.
Harrison Phillips also another great run defender, really made it
tough on the young guards. And I think for Isaac
c Amalo getting into because you have to remember he
didn't play it all in the preseason and practice. This
is a different tempo than game tempo. I thought he
was a step behind a couple of things between Broderick

(13:07):
and Isaac and then working on their communication together. So
that's something they're gonna have to clean up and hopefully
fast track and to give the season because you can't
have that and you can't allow Aaron Rodgers to get
hit as.

Speaker 17 (13:19):
Much as he did in this game.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Because Max, we're having a hard time keeping track of
you so well, we'll give you the rest of the
night off, but sorry to bring it down. I'm not
saying it's fatal or anything like that that I'm just
saying for today, the run stopped. The run equation badly
worked out in the jets favor and the Steelers lucky

(13:41):
to what they do. Charlicke the Escape from New York.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
They definitely did. And you can hear it and Max
it and hear us as we were talking about the
communication all the way through, but essentially he was saying
the exact same thing that that just has to be
cleaned up, and you hope that is going to be
better moving forward. So that's just something that with the
identity of this offense is going to art with that
running game, because again, there's opportunities in that play action
game that they can take advantage of if they can

(14:06):
get it going.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
In the meantime, it is the NFL, and you gotta win.
You've got a road win. You're one to zero, and
I do think there's value in some of the stuff
that Mike Tomlin talked about in the media aftermath in
the post game about staying in the fight, rallying, you know,
pulling the game out there's a belief now which I
think was there to start the game, but it gets

(14:28):
ratcheted up because now you've seen it in.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
Action and anytime throughout a course game and you come
out of it, there's two or three plays that you
have to make to win the game. It won't show
up a lot of times in the highlights, but in
this particular case, Kenneth gain Well, that's fumble that he
helped create. That was the turning point of the game
because the offensively they were able to punch it in
for a touchdown and defensively they had to step up
when they needed to do it to get out of

(14:51):
that stadium.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
The Steels post game show continues right here on the
Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which presented by doing it right roof,
I'm exciting and remodeling pull him up the lifetime workmanship warranty.

Speaker 18 (15:05):
Fields gets a snap back to pass looking steps up
in the pocket, hats and Room throws to his left
and the.

Speaker 19 (15:10):
Ball is dislaunched Chellen Ramsey Wallop Starrett Wilson, it is
incomplete and Ramsey makes the play that seals a victory
for the Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Steelers Today's Electrified play. The game is powered by the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union Number five IBEW
letting Up Pittsburgh since nineteen eighty seven. Mike Pursuda and
Charlie Batch with you after Steelers thirty four, Jets thirty
two and Charlie. Jalen Ramsey was described by Assistant general

(15:43):
manager Andy Widel in the preseason as vicious and violent.
He was that several times today, including when the Steelers
absolutely needed him to.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
Be both, and this is why you brought him in
here to close out ball games. The last two plays
of this game was directly with him. Justin Fields had
an opportunity to slip out of the pocket make a
throw down the field. He broke that pass up and
then obviously the play that we just heard there rob
King as he announced that. But that was something that
was beautiful all through. And the confidence level that Jayalen

(16:12):
Ramsey has is always top notch. But again Mike Tollin
talks about you didn't do it here yet now that
he did, man, I know he's feeling really good walking
out that locker room.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Back to the phones, we go. Thanks to everybody who's
been hanging in there as long as they have, including
care in San Diego. You're on with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 20 (16:32):
Hi, good afternoon you guys. Oh my gosh, mister bats,
I met you on the Steelers cruise. I hope you
come back. But anyway, question for you, do you know
Aaron Rodgers? Did you find it weird? Like it wasn't
Michael Vick weird? But do you think it was weird
that he was hired? And for both of you? Is
Chris Collinsworth is annoying to you guys as it is still.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
All of us.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
I like Chris. He does get a little grating sometimes,
but I think he brings a passion to the job
and he's opinionated and that's what you're supposed to be.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
He does. And but again I can't. There's not much
I can say on my ankle. People could they question
my voice? They want me to go deeper, and I'm like,
I can't. I'm only could go my octaal. They're only
that my tones are only but so much, But again,
I enjoy it.

Speaker 10 (17:16):
You're so.

Speaker 20 (17:19):
Not one sided as opposed to the gentleman that I
just mentioned, Like you're such a good announcer.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
I will say this about get a point that way.
One other point about Chris Collinsworth. He's responsible for Pro
Football Focus, which I find not credible. Every time I
hear somebody quoting a Pro Football Focused that, I ignore it.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
A lot of people do as well.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
They do.

Speaker 20 (17:43):
Yeah, I'm talking about his days.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
But regarding Aaron Rodgers part of your question. Care not
surprised that ended up the way it ended up. They
kind of had a handful of guys that they were
looking at, and they assigned a price and of value
to all of them. It worked out that it was
Aaron Rodgers, but I'm sure glad it did because, uh,
just being in the media, I root for the story.

(18:07):
And this is a fascinating story and it has been
even before Rogers got here, and it's only gonna be
more so, particularly and winning games in dramatic fashion. It's
gonna be kind of fun, isn't it. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
And it was a lot of people that that were questioning,
you know, things off the field and his character now
character issue potentially, but man, I haven't seen any of that.
And I'm a person who always gives people to benefit
of the doubt. As I built relationship with people. It
is not lip servers. When you hear the organization say
they are extremely pleased as far as how Aaron has
built relationships with everybody throughout the organization. And when you

(18:43):
watch it and he is having fun and obviously it
translates into wins in this particular manner, that makes it
a whole heck of a lot more relaxed building within
and it's just so exciting And hopefully this continues for Aaron.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Anything else care.

Speaker 20 (18:56):
Because out here in San Diego we heard not good
things about him yelling at the team when he wasn't
even playing in the preseason, about not protecting the quarterback,
which is fair like he was a leader.

Speaker 16 (19:11):
He is.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
He's the leader of the offense and I think the
leader of the team based on his resume and who
he is. And there's sometimes it's a pat on the
back and sometimes it's hey do better, But those those
players love him care. I can tell you that they
they have embraced him. And what you hear about him
most from the players is he is who he is,
but he's still a regular guy, right and he's got

(19:33):
no ego with them, and that's all they care about.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
And to that point when you were talking about how
Aaron was yelling at people he wasn't playing in the preseason.
As you're watching it, you have to bring it to
their attention because in a few weeks you're going to
be that guy getting hit and you don't want to
take on those hits, so you address it when you
had the opportunity. I know he took some shots here today,
but again, hopefully they clean those things up.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Thanks for the tall care. We're going to keep the
ball rolling with one in South Carolina. You're up next
with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 21 (20:03):
Hey, guys, like, got doing doing well?

Speaker 2 (20:05):
How you doing?

Speaker 21 (20:07):
Hey, I'm doing that. I just want to see if
I get started once saying you guys did a want
to put job this morning with that tribute to Wolf.
I want to have a don it from a guy
Wolf to market and every time Steel's gonna said, go,
I have a donner, so I'm gonna have a doing
it from.

Speaker 17 (20:25):
So with the game, it was a big game, and
you guys mentioned Ramsey that call before when they say
he did the little the little chop block thing or whatever,
that was a bogus call. So he made out with
the two defensive players at the end of the game.

Speaker 21 (20:43):
And also, hey, my guy, ball the best kick in
the world, like I always tell everyboy and balls.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
I trsty Absolutely Boswell has been money since he's been here.
And when he lined up there did that kick could
have easily went for sixty four sixty five. So everything
that he is doing, he's been doing it at a
consistent level, man, And I'm glad he is on this team.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
And you can see the confidence the Steelers have in
him because Charlie and I were discussing right before that
third down play what might happen, and they went for
the juggle. They went deep one on one coverage. They
trusted Calvin Austin. They weren't trying to get five or
six more yards to get Boswell a little closer. They thought, yeah,
we're good right here. Let's try to throw the deep
sideline and if we hit this, the game is over

(21:25):
and if not, bos is gonna kick the field goal
and we'll be ahead.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
And also, like Tomlin's quote when he said at the
at the end of the half, Boz just ran out
there like now I'm going to kick this thing. I mean,
he physically would have had to be removed from the
field because that's how much confidence he has in himself.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Anything else won.

Speaker 21 (21:43):
And one more thing, you guys and everybody was quisting
why the Steelers dat their home and now we see
why to stop the rank because without him in the middle,
we can't stop the rank.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Yeah, it didn't really get stopped today. Appreciate the call
on let's keep it going. Tyler in the basement, you're
up tune, Mike and Chuck.

Speaker 16 (22:07):
Been a long off season. It's good to be back
and hearing your voices other than on the dB Morning show.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Good to be best.

Speaker 16 (22:15):
Yes, hey, it was a full house down the basement
on this beautiful Steelers Sunday. And on that last play,
I hit the truck stick button on the Xbox the
droller and boarded at work. That's why you go out
and get that caliberbal player.

Speaker 5 (22:31):
He can change the game, no questions, not one of
the thing.

Speaker 16 (22:36):
My last thing to everyone in boss ball Pa, oh, hey,
Chris Ball as well, pay that guy.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
Hey, nothing else needs to be saying. I mean he
feels the exact same way. And when you put on
a performance like this, this is just who Bozzi is.
Bozz is gonna go out there and do his job
at the highest level. And that's why he's very appreciative
around here. Appreciated around here. Maybe he doesn't necessarily feel
that way at this particular point, but he's We know
that the contract will contractually. He deserves it, and hopefully

(23:08):
it happens sooner rather than a late.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
I think it happens next year, and I think they
will take care of him, and I think that's been
expressed to him, and I think that's why there's no
That's why he's out there kicking field goals and there
was no drama. And no, I mean, you couldn't tell
if he's upset or not because that guy has a
practice schedule and he can figure out.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
But it works.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
It's working, So just keep doing it.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
And it's been like that for a number of years now,
so it hadn't just started recently.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
Keep doing what you're doing, and the Steelers will keep
watching those football sail through the uprights from way downtown.
That was from three point range. No, it was real,
sixty yards, it really was. We got a lot more
to get to tonight, So keep it here with Charlie
Batch and Mike pursuit of this is the Steelers postgame
show on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Steelers Postgame Show which presented by doing it Right, Roofing,
sighting and remodeling home up the lifetime Workmanship warranty.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
Gipson takes it right between the hashes.

Speaker 19 (24:06):
Lost the football there it is recovered by the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
Ben Scronic is on it.

Speaker 19 (24:12):
I think it may have been gain Well who knocked
it loose, and it's Scronic who recovers Max Stark's good call.

Speaker 13 (24:20):
I can't say enough about Kenny g that that that
offensive player making a tackle on kickoff and knocking that
ball loose. I think Scoronic recovered.

Speaker 16 (24:30):
Man.

Speaker 13 (24:31):
It's just an example of making plays in all three
phases and being a football player first in a positional player.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
Second. Welcome back to the Steelers postgame showing the Steelers
Audio Network. You can reach us at four one two three,
three three nine three eight three, also at Charlie Batch
sixteen or at dv E Mike if you like Twitter
slash x. Today's injury Report is brought to you by
Edgar Snyder and associates. They're always looking out for you

(24:57):
in this imperfect world. Before you talk to the in Shirts,
cup find Edgar and Charlie safety to Sewn Elliott knie
being evaluated, linebacker Malik Harrison knee being evaluated, and cornerback
Joey Porter junior hamstring steels just shut him down because
he got tight. But hopefully nothing too serious with Elliott

(25:19):
or Harrison, because Elliott is a starter and a key guy.
And you saw Harrison in there when the Jets got
close to the goal line near the end of the game.
He was replacing Peyton Wilson as a potential run stuffer.
But you know, not the worst injury report in the
world for an opening game.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
No, it's not. And I think you know, you hope
that the secondary guys bounced back quickly because that was
a strength of his defense coming into it. But now
you have two of them potentially not gonna play next week.
And I only say that because my rule is if
they don't return to a game, chances of playing the
following week are slim, So I'm just basing it off
of that. But again, Brandon Echols came into the game,
you know would James Pierre eventually will be part of

(25:58):
that rotation. So if that, if those guys are not here,
that could ultimately alter what the game plan looks like
next week.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Beckles is a good player, and we didn't talk a
ton about him in the preseason because there's so many
other high profile veterans and you know, so many other storylines.
But this kid just does his job and he's an
NFL corner. Yes he is it. It was a good addition.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
Yes, he hasn't had to chuckle a little bit when
we hear tomlin SoundBite because he's like, hey, Scronic jumped
on that ball. If you remember a year ago, he
didn't even know his name, yes he said, I think fifteen.

Speaker 2 (26:28):
I don't know what he said. Was that other gunner
did a good job, Yes, did a good job. Whoever
the hell he was right and now he.

Speaker 3 (26:35):
Knows Ben scron hear another season opener, Scaronic with two
big plays, one touchdown and the fumble recovery.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Ben's Chronik moving on up. Let's go back to the phone.
So I think Dave and Florida's trying it again, Dave,
can you hear us? And can we hear you?

Speaker 8 (26:50):
I think so this time?

Speaker 2 (26:51):
Guys, what do you got coming coming in loud and clear?
What do you got all?

Speaker 12 (26:56):
Right?

Speaker 2 (26:56):
Good?

Speaker 8 (26:57):
Well, first I'd like to say you know, I have
his I've seen Charlie Batch and since he retired as
far as his physical appearance, and then I see him
on his morning show and I have to say, tell her,
I don't know what you're doing, but man, you haven't
aged a bit.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
No, I appreciate it getting younger, and you got to
I just started walking, so that's been part of my regimen.
I try to do at least fifteen to twenty miles
a week walking. So it's a very good workout for me.
So I encourage anybody else to just get moving.

Speaker 8 (27:26):
Okay, Well, I hope you're feeling as good as you're looking.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
There, brother, Yes, sir, thank you.

Speaker 8 (27:32):
That's good. This game is hard to evaluate week one,
but I can tell you one thing, right, we left
up where we picked up where we left off getting
gouged in the Running game. I mean, well we let
up like one hundred and eighty ydds in Russian. Yeah, yeah,
I mean obviously we know what we need to fix.

(27:56):
I mean it's good to be one and oh, I
mean that's that's for sure. Uh Ben's ironicle seems to
be around those humbles on those kicks offfs. He's constantly
recovering them. So he's turned out to be a good
pick up. We didn't see Roman Wilson at all today.
He didn't hit the field at all today, did he?

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Oh No, he was out there a lot. He just
didn't get targeted. He was out in a lot of
he was out in a lot of three wide receiver sets.
I've uh, snap council come out tomorrow. But uh, yeah,
he was Uh he was out there.

Speaker 8 (28:27):
Okay, I didn't notice, but yeah, I mean it's good.
It's it's good to be one of those we squeaked
out of that. I'll tell you a lot justin Fields
played pretty good game. His arm looked very lively, I
mean more lively than they saw anything, you know last
year he was with that ball in then. But man,
they got.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
To detect right.

Speaker 8 (28:47):
Rogers took some blasts today and if he takes these
glass like he took today, he's not gonna make it
through a week five. Roderick Jones got to.

Speaker 7 (28:55):
Do a better job.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Yeah, I think they all do the back game well.
Didn't pick up a blitz slate in the game on
a third down. Uh, And they got to run the
ball better to just keep the defense guessing. A little bit,
and as Charlie pointed out, that'll enhance their play action game,
which they still got some mileage out of today even
though the running game just did not work. They appreciate

(29:17):
the call. We got a full board of phones here,
so we're gonna move on to HUT in Ohio. Hut,
thanks for hanging in there as long as you have.
Welcome to the show.

Speaker 6 (29:25):
Hey, no problem, guys.

Speaker 7 (29:26):
I appreciate it. Hey, Jarny, see you back, buddy.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
I appreciate it. Thanks, it's good to be back.

Speaker 6 (29:31):
No, yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure. I have a couple
of questions.

Speaker 7 (29:34):
On our offensive line.

Speaker 6 (29:37):
Is it broad, Eric, or is it just kind of
like a mitsa things because that forty one year old
man can't be getting hit like that first off, and
it showed his lack of mobility completely. Yeah, they answered
that first.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
Please, I think it was just it was a combination
of them all. To be honest with you, I can't
sit back and say it was one person over the
other right now, because my vision, by my view of it,
was what you watch in the game. He all twenty
two won't come on to it later, and then those
reports grades will start to come out Monday and Tuesday.

Speaker 6 (30:11):
Okay, okay, I appreciate that.

Speaker 10 (30:13):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (30:13):
On the other side of the ball, Ramsey was a
beast definitely in the second half. But our run stop.
What happened to spies? Do we not have the spies?
I thought there's a range he was going to be.
I mean, right, he lit up, but deal was just
thing like, you did.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
What he wanted. Yeah, they don't really do that much.
I thought they might use Peyton Wilson as a spy
because he can really run and tackle. They just, you know,
the Jets started having success running and then the outside
guy started crashing down trying to catch those runs. And
when Fields did the right thing on the Reid option,
which he's pretty good at, he got outside. That touchdown

(30:51):
was way too easy. That was on TJ. Watt's side.
Which one well, this is the one where he walked in.
I mean, okay, speaks are a little different, but uh yeah,
I get your point now. They did not handle that
as well as they needed to handle it. But the
good news is they got out of there with the
w man. It's it's gonna be a lot easier week

(31:12):
on them.

Speaker 12 (31:13):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
The question, the line of question questioning is going to
be you guys won butt, as opposed to how the
hell did this happen? How the hell did that happen?
The whole tone of the thing is going to be
easier to digest. And as Mike Tomlin always says, Charlie,
much easier to make corrections off the tape when you
win and when you.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
Know absolutely and this is what I'm sorry, this is, Yeah,
this is this is one of the things where you know,
you talk about stopping to run, but obviously when you
look at this game. They finished at one eight two,
but they had one o six in the first half.
They stayed head of a change and it kept the
Steelers off bounce on that second and five, second and
four and again that's who this that's who. Offense is
advantage and did the Jets took advantage through out the

(31:54):
entire game.

Speaker 6 (31:55):
With that by that time of rolls next date, next state,
they see they started over pursuing in the second half,
which seemed to give fields more room in the gut
because I seen Tz outrun people all the way around.
But it was crazy. It looked like the Baltimore game
last year.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
Yeah, I mean, I think my bottom line and we're
up against the break day. But my bottom line is
they never made Justin fields uncomfortable and I would have
liked to see them maybe get a two score lead
and then now you're the team that can attack, and
now you're the team that's dictating. But they were more
in CounterPunch mode and survivor mode.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
And to your point, the only time in the game
they made Justin uncomfortable was after the turnover they scored,
and now he was playing from behind and he was
not able to execute and get a first down with
about four minutes to go in the game. And ultimately
that played to the Steelers advantage because they were able
to bleed the clock down to a minute and now
Justin had to go out there and lead a driving
he was not able to do.

Speaker 2 (32:53):
So thanks for the call, Thanks for hanging in there,
thanks for trying. Again. We are up against the break,
so we're going to take one. The show continues right
here on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which presented by Doing it Right, Roofing,
siding and remodeling, Pull Him Up, the Lifetime Workmanship Warranty.

Speaker 18 (33:11):
Play Action Patch, Rogers Rolling, He Fires, underneath wide open
his skronic Ben Ben Skronick is in.

Speaker 22 (33:17):
For the score.

Speaker 23 (33:18):
Ben is a glue guy for our team. You know,
he does the dirty work. And I couldn't believe coming
off that fake he was wide open. I was throwing
the ball thinking, Man, Ben's gonna score the first test.

Speaker 24 (33:30):
Uh.

Speaker 23 (33:30):
And then I went in the locker room and saw
the worst thing that can happen to Ben. That's a
crowd full of reporters around him to get his head
even bigger than it already is. But but I'm uh,
I really like Ben and proud of that play.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
May today welcome back to the Steelers postgame Show and
the Steelers Audio Network. You can reach ust at four, one, two,
three through three, nine, three eight three. That was Aaron
Rodgers talking about Ben's skeertik and Charlie. Aaron Rodgers, from
what I can tell, at least, has a great rapport
with all of his team. But Ben Skarnick is the
one guy who initially started giving him busting his chops back,

(34:07):
you know, as Rogers would bust on his teammates and
kind of normalize to him, like, oh, you're not this
legendary gold jacket figure. You're just the guy I can
rip on like we all rip on each other. Yes,
And they got a neat little thing going and that
banty were going back and forth. That happened in July
when they went out to Malibu and they were going
back and forth. And to your point, when he came
back again, I changed the relationship because he was just

(34:28):
want of the guys and not just kind of his
fairy tale myth gold jacket type of guy. He humbled
himself and literally everybody in the locker room is paying
attention to it. And I got to point out also,
Scoronic right on the DV morning show in training camp,
he gave himself his own nickname, which I'm not a
big fan of. I think normally you have to wait
for people to give you a nick dame. What is it?
Scrow dirt? Scrow dirt, you know, like Joe Dirt, Hey dirt,

(34:53):
Like he's got a kind of Joe dirt look to him.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
You keep making plays like that, they'll start calling you
by your nickname.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
Cli whatever you want. Let's go back to the telephone lines,
DJ and Murray Spell has been hanging in there for
a while. Thanks DJ. What's up tonight?

Speaker 5 (35:08):
Oh?

Speaker 24 (35:08):
Oh, thanks for getting me on here. Uh, Mike Church
love the show. I've been a long time listener. I
grew up on a dairy farm, and uh yeah, I
didn't get to watch a lot of the end of
the games. We started up in guns at four o'clock,
so I was always listening to the radio and listening
to postgame report, and I just you guys do a

(35:28):
great job taking over.

Speaker 7 (35:30):
It's awesome.

Speaker 24 (35:33):
I don't know to start off Rosser's first play, sack
Mecca first first play drop, Uh yeah.

Speaker 15 (35:41):
I didn't.

Speaker 24 (35:42):
But then they pulled it around, they did the thing,
and I just I love seeing Ramsey in the game
with a big hit and just what an amazing game,
just all around pretty cool. And then Bostwo the six
field goal. Just yeah, I don't know, way to go
to Steelers, I mean pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Yeah, pretty cool. Well, sud Man appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
Absolutely, And to your point, you know, early on in
that game, DK dropped that first pass, you're kind of
everybody kind of whoa, this is what we signed. But again,
nobody panicked in that particular case. He came right back
on that bubble screen. And anytime a receiver drops a
pass like that, you're like, get me the ball, I'm
gonna make a play. And he was able to do
that down the left sideline and putting the Steelers in
better feeld position in that particular case. And that hats

(36:27):
off to him because this is going to be a
beautiful partnership between DK and Aaron. And I know it
was a lot to talk about that second receiver, but
Calvin Austin as well. He stepped up today in a
big way for catches seventy yards and even at the
end of the game when one on one coverage happened,
Aaron didn't hesitate. He threw that slot face Rovin Austen.
That let you know he trusts everybody on this offense.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
You know what I've seen the DK Metcalf. He is
a freak, and you know in a good way. But
he does catch every pass. It's there's gonna be some drops,
there will be absolutely And there was also that slant
what became the drive for the game winning field goal
that uh DK Metcalf bobbles and then knocked it off

(37:10):
of the tight end Johnny Smith and then managed to
still catch it. And Iron Eagle on the broadcast said,
and I quote, it's not quite the immaculate reception, but
it's pretty impressive.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
That was spot on. That was spot on. He was
he was on with that one.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
Anything else, DJ, No, I just yeah.

Speaker 24 (37:30):
I mean it was a disappoint in defense overall, but
hopefully they'll turn things around at the end of the game.
Just yeah. I mean love Jalen Ramsey. Love the energy
he brings to the team. It's like Judy Porter type energy.
I love it.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
I agree with you on that great comparison. Yeah, and
when you look at where he's at, I mean, this
is a seven time pro bowler and yet we've known
him a lot about him over the years do out.
But now that he is here, they brought him here
to close out games and he was able to do
that back to back plays to seal the victory for
the Steelers.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Thanks for the call, DJ. We're gonna keep moving down
the line to Tony in Providence. You're up next with
Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 5 (38:11):
Hey, nice to talk you guys.

Speaker 16 (38:12):
How you new year.

Speaker 5 (38:13):
You guys do a great job. I don't was a
good win. I was worried about the Linsey call. That
was a bad call, guys, And when you think about that,
I don't want do the courses to give the referees.

Speaker 3 (38:25):
You know, Yeah, I agree with you on that play
pause there for one moment, because that's a tough play
for a dB, and I understand what the NFL is
trying to do by protecting offensive guys and not going
to the knees. But when he's directly behind the ball carrier,
he's trying to go in and make a play. I
don't expect him to get fined in that particular situation.
I just expect him to use that as a teaching

(38:45):
method for any dB around the league to say this
is okay. Referees allow that particular play to happen, even
though it's a judgmental call, but at least allow that
to happen.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
Yeah, Jeene start throwing the broadcast, and I have great
respect for Jane and his ability to interpret this stuff.
He said they could have passed and calling the flag there.
Throwing the flag there because he was trying to make
the tackle, not wipe out the blocker.

Speaker 3 (39:05):
Yes, absolutely right.

Speaker 5 (39:07):
On other point was I'm Chris is always good. I
knew what was going in, guys, because he's the best,
and he is the best. And the other thing I
wanted to say is the guests kept seeing in the
papers and before the game, guys, they kept seeing there
Guna won it. So I was disappointed the Steelers could
not hand on the run right away, right away when

(39:29):
that was his strategy. The coach said, it got his
new philosophy there. Who was going to run it up
the gut?

Speaker 2 (39:34):
Oh, they knew it was coming, Tony. I mean it's not.
They were emphasizing it all week and they were talking
about it here all week. It's kind of like the
Seinfeld thing. They knew how to take the reservation, they
just didn't know how to hold the reservation. They knew
they had to stop the run, right, they just didn't
know how to stop the run. Absolutely, they got to
figure that out because that's, you know, coming off of

(39:55):
the Baltimore thing, and that was the point of conversation
after the draft. Then that's why they drafted who they drafted,
and that's why they did what they did in training
camp and all got to be better than that. Appreciate
call Tony. We're gonna kick it now to Max in Houston. Max,
thanks for hanging in there. You're up with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 22 (40:15):
Hey, how you guys doing doing well. I wanted to
talk about a few things, both quarterbacks and also the
run defense.

Speaker 8 (40:25):
I have a fear that this.

Speaker 22 (40:28):
Is going to be like twenty fourteen to seventeen, that
this still are team's gonna go as far as Aaron
can carry us. I don't have much hope for the
running game.

Speaker 7 (40:39):
Although with Aaron.

Speaker 22 (40:40):
I was oppressed because for the first time in years,
we actually had wide receivers wide open.

Speaker 15 (40:48):
What happened?

Speaker 22 (40:48):
What was different about this year versus other years? Where
did he just see them that other quarterbacks didn't. The
run game, how much did Black play? Maybe we just
need to put him at nostack the stuff the inside
and make double teams. And then Justin phields that may
have been the most accurate passing he's had in his
entire career. I give a lot of credit to the

(41:11):
offensive coordinator for the Jets for figuring out how to
get Justin phil to be.

Speaker 7 (41:17):
A better passer.

Speaker 3 (41:19):
No, I agree with you on that, and Justin fields
at one point he was sixteen and nineteen in the game.
He finished sixteen to twenty two, and those were the
plays that the Steelers needed to make. But to your point,
He played a solid game throughout. It wasn't like we
haven't seen it.

Speaker 22 (41:31):
It wasn't the stud Even his passes, they were like
to the right, he needed to throw inside or outside
ty Lo not putting this receivers in danger.

Speaker 7 (41:41):
He was accurate.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
Oh yeah, absolutely, one hundred percent agree with you. When
it comes to.

Speaker 2 (41:45):
After moving or on the run, he reset or he
got out of trouble and then was still able to
make plays.

Speaker 3 (41:50):
He was good today, Yeah, he absolutely was. But again
remember that's a different offense than what he ran here.
So again to his credit, he is running and out
of his team moving forward and hopefully he continues and
knocks off some people for the Steelers. On our behalf.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
To your point about the Steelers receivers, Max Calvin Austin
third was talking about Aaron Rodgers week and a half
or so ago, and he said, the biggest thing that
he noticed is, as Austin put it, there's never a
dead route. You're not just supposed to run and clear
out of defender or you know, be on this side
of the field so they can throw on that side

(42:23):
of the field. If you're open, Rodgers is going to
throw it to you. And if if you heard him
talking about the shallow cross that turned into the touchdown
pass to Ben's kronik. Rogers was kind of laughing, Oh, look,
Ben's open. I bet that play wasn't called for Ben's kronick.

Speaker 3 (42:37):
Absolutely, it probably wasn't, and he probably just happened to
be the right time, on the right substitute.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
On your route and be where you're supposed to be,
and who knows, you might get the ball and you
might score.

Speaker 3 (42:46):
And it also could have been to the Steelers coaches
credit too to say, hey, once Ben's in there, there's
no way that they're thinking that this is going to
be a pass.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
So either way, however, the narrative is it resulted in
a touchdown. But to your point of saying, this offense
and this team is going to go where the quarter
takes you. So this is going to be Aaron's team
walking off of it. I know he's relieved because yes,
he closed out the game in a four minute drill,
but ultimately it was other teams that did that, special
teams creating the turnover. Given the offense great field position,

(43:15):
so now he didn't have to go to length of
the field, only short and he was able to convert
into a touchdown.

Speaker 2 (43:19):
Max. Thanks for the call. We got to take a pause.
The Steelers Post Game Show continues right here on the
Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (43:26):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which presented by Doing It Right, Roofing,
Sighting and Remodeling, home of the lifetime Workmanship Warranty.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
Welcome back to the Steels Postgame Show on the Steelers
Audio Network, brought to you by Kelly and Ta Pizzitt
and Draft House. The Peachiff Champions four one two three, three,
three nine, three eight three is our number. Back to
the telephones we go. Let's bring in Mary from Columbus.
You're up next with Mike Pursuda and Charlie Betch.

Speaker 12 (43:56):
I'm Mike, and Charlie. I'm more now. That game really
got me all excited. I loved the tight end position.
I don't know if you remember I called last year
last season but and talked about it. But I know
that mister Friar Muth made a couple of great key

(44:17):
catches and I wish they'd use them more often in
that position. And I love the interview with with Chris Boswell.
He made a comment he put his best foot forward,
and I thought that was so hilarious. Uh, he has

(44:38):
ice water for blood, I think, And so he takes
his job seriously but nonchalant, not nonchalantly, but you know,
every every time he kicks, it's important. So and I
also wanted to mention about the Buckeye football program. They
come up with some really great players and and uh,

(45:01):
Cam Hayward one of them. So cheers to even to
the buck Eyes here. So but got.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
Steelers absolutely, And you're right, buck guys. This that's a
that's an organization or at least a university that they
always go to and scout that is like tops of
the list because they know there are top players that
are coming out. And of course you talked about Cam Hayward.
We also have Jack Sawyer as well, hoping to be
part of that rotation. Yes, so there you know, that's

(45:30):
always here.

Speaker 12 (45:32):
He had a great and the National Championship game and
I think won the game for us, I believe.

Speaker 25 (45:38):
So there you go, there you go.

Speaker 3 (45:41):
We're hoping he brings it, brings it here. And to
your point, you know you talk about the tight ends.
I mean that's something that Arthur Smith Love Aaron talks
about and he talked about how how this is the
strength on this particular football team all the way down
to the top four that you have. You saw Friar
move big plays in the middle of the field. He
had three catches and of.

Speaker 2 (45:58):
Course the else was blocker a couple of times, absolutely,
and he has gotten so much better as a blocker.
When he first got here, it was not a strength.
Correct to be nice, correct, and he's really worked at it.

Speaker 3 (46:10):
And that's where you that's where you have to credit
and you know him just putting in that work to
try to get better because he wanted to overall be
use that as a strength.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
One of those plays was the little shovel pass to
uh John Smith on the suite that they scored the
touchdown on. They trust fire moves to get up in
front of the place and those are things that people
won't see when you look at it. But man to
his credit, it won't show up in the stat line.
But I promise you John new Smith appreciates that block
anything else.

Speaker 7 (46:34):
Mary great, Uh.

Speaker 12 (46:36):
Now just that you guys do a great job. I
heard you on TV. List was it last week? Charlie
did some of the announcing for on on the TV.

Speaker 7 (46:47):
At least I hurt.

Speaker 3 (46:48):
It sounds doing the preseason. I do color, I do
cover collo tament color commentating with you. Yes, thank you,
I appreciate that. Thanks for the call.

Speaker 1 (46:58):
Mary.

Speaker 2 (46:58):
We're gonna move on now to Dan in Westview. You're
up with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 21 (47:04):
Oh hey, MIKEE and Charlie.

Speaker 9 (47:06):
So I have three takeaways from the game today. First
is is a good team win. Defense was horrible though, right.
I mean, they didn't show up, and that's probably expected
because most of them don't play in the preseason. But
the one thing I would have mentioned on his defense though,

(47:28):
is I thought that Heyward looked a little sluggish out there.
I mean, I know he just got that little bit
of an increase in his pay, but he looks out
of shape and he doesn't look like he was ready
to play today. That's my first takeaway. The second takeaway
is Bausworth. That dude is ice sixty yarder to win

(47:49):
the game. That's the guy who should get paid more
money because he can actually win a game for you.
And the last takeaway is Aaron Rodd. That guy is
not going to lose the game for a year. He
is still looking good. He's not quick, he's not mobile,
but if our offensive line can pick it up a

(48:11):
little bit, I think we're in for a successful year.

Speaker 7 (48:14):
What do you guys think?

Speaker 2 (48:15):
I agree with most of that, Dan, and we're getting
close to commercial, so I'll just sort of summarize quickly.
Cam Heyward, despite the contract dispute, really had a kind
of normal preseason for him. He doesn't rep a lot
at Saint Vincent College and he does a lot on
his own. I think a lot of them look sluggish
out there today. I don't think Cam should be separated

(48:36):
from the pack. That nobody on defense played as well
as I thought they would coming into the game. And
Rogers with the mobility, there's gonna be times when he
gets trapped in the pocket. If the rush gets upon
him instantly, he's not going to evade it. But there
was a lot of bootleg stuff today and a lot
of stuff happened off of that. I think he's got
enough mobility. And Boswell I think will get his deal

(48:58):
at the end of this year and he'll be quite happy.

Speaker 3 (48:59):
With absolutely now. And I agree with you on that.
As far as with Aaron Rodgers, as far of mobility,
he did it. He did enough today to move around.
But also when you'll start to hear maybe this week
here because a lot of people, even in a presets
who did play, they're not playing sixty snaps and Mike
Townland always talks about physical condition presees anything else. If
you win it throughout the course of his game, you

(49:21):
better start doing some extra conditioning this week to prepare
yourself to be gaining ready for Game two.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
Thanks for the call, Dan, we gotta fly, and thanks
to Calliente Pizza and Draft House for bringing us this
hour the Pittsburgh Steelers Audio Network Post game Show Calliente
Pizza and draft House The Pizza of Champions. The postgame
Show continues right here on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (49:39):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which is presented by Caliente
Pizza and Draft House The Pizza of Champions.

Speaker 18 (49:46):
Boswell is sixty yard at ten snap, boo on the way.
That kick is up and that kick is good. The
Great Chris.

Speaker 26 (49:57):
Boswell drills one from six yards out to get the
Steelers a thirty four to thirty two lead with one
oh three remaining in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 13 (50:07):
I say enough about boz Man our kicker as a
serial killer man he's he got a low polse rate
he can't wait to deliver.

Speaker 2 (50:17):
Welcome back to the Steelers Post Game Show and the
Steelers Audio Network, brought to you by Kelly Ane Pizza
and Draft House. The Pizza of Champions four one, two, three, three, three, nine,
three eight three is our number. Today's Key to the
Game is brought to you by South Hills Kia. South
Hills Kia has the ride and a price you'll love. Charlie,
I'm I'm gonna pick an intangible for my key. Mike

(50:38):
Tomin talked afterward about the mindset and staying in the fight,
and I think when you get in one of these games,
you know, some stuff didn't go well early. Some stuff
kept not going well throughout a lot of twists and turns,
a lot of lead changes, a lot of up and down,
a lot of ab and flow. As your old coach
Bill Kauer used to like to say, but they hung
in there, and man, when they needed to make a

(50:59):
play to get Boswell in position, they made it.

Speaker 15 (51:02):
Well.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
When they needed to make a play to get the
ball back, they made it. Then they made the play
to get themselves in position for Boswell to do his thing,
and then Jalen Ramsey made a play to seal the deal.
I mean they stayed in the fight. That sounds cliched,
but not every team does.

Speaker 3 (51:19):
They don't. And when you stay in the fight, but
also being able to close out games. All three phases
were able to close out games. You create this turnover
and special teams, you score offensively, and then you have
to make the stop when it's needed. They did that
so they I know stat wise it doesn't look great,
but ultimately, when you're able to get out of a
victory and all three phases played a part of that,
you should feel pretty good.

Speaker 2 (51:40):
Back to the phones, we go Phil in Bloomfield. He's
been hanging in there for a while. Appreciate that. Phil.
You're on with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 27 (51:48):
Oo, guys, thanks taking my call. I just have two
quick questions and one comment. First, how do you see
the Steelers using the running back rotations going forward? I
know Johnson had to fumble earlier in the game, that
they really lose all trust in him, that they wouldn't
put him in the fourth quarter just really seemed like
those last couple of drives, ye, maybe he could have

(52:09):
made a difference And then was there any sort of
tribute for Craig Wolfley Prior to the broadcast, I was
in and out of listening to the radio, so I
may have missed it. And I just wanted to say
too that I'm miss hearing stand here on the post
game and miss hearing him for the Power Hour that
you guys had on DV in the mornings.

Speaker 2 (52:27):
Thank you appreciate all that there was a tribute to
Wolfe on the pregame show. Caleb Johnson, this is a
kind of a I would say, developing situation, Charlie. I
don't know if you see it the way I do,
but I think sooner rather than later, they need him
to be the guy. But I also think that right
now he's not ready to be the guy, and he's

(52:48):
not close to being ready to be the guy. So
it's going to be Jalen Warren and Gainwell. And I
was surprised Gainwell was used as much as he was,
but I thought he was their most effective back today.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
I agree with that, and I think when you look
at it to roll that that Johnson is using right now,
especially at the kick return game, it looked a little hesitant.
You know, hey, hit me, are you able to see
the hole, hit the hole, and ultimately.

Speaker 2 (53:12):
Use your speed.

Speaker 3 (53:13):
It just looked like he was a split second slow
with that and did that resonate and transition into when
he was actually behind at the running back number one.
I don't know. Only he can answer that particular question.
But right now, based off what we're seeing in this rotation,
you have to go right now with Jalen Warren and
games well for the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (53:31):
At least four one, two, three, three, three, nine, three
eight three is our number. Let's keep the phone calls rolling.
Salvator in West Palm Beach, you're up next. Thanks for
hanging in there, Salvator, I know you've been waiting a while.

Speaker 11 (53:46):
No, it's all right, guys, Thank you so much. Longtime
fany you both diehard Staylor fans as I was born.
And I have to say a couple of things. Then
you guys can elaborate, and there maybe one more if
you allow me to facts Steelers off Fens played against
in my opinion, a possible top ten defense. The run
game I'm not worried about. I really ain't because I

(54:07):
think game well, I mean, that's his name, right, the
new guy and the rookie, you'll get it. Get get
get togethers O v O line and do what they
need to do. Another thing, the Diddy line was pushed
the Jets de line pushed our old line around a
lot today and specifically broader. But if you look at

(54:27):
the end of the game, when Roger Cup like physical bro,
he stopped everybody, He's got the talent. I'm not saying
everyone on social media that I listened to Steals almighty, everybody,
Oh we're done with him and blah blah blah. Gave
up four sacks yet bread, I understand that, but pause, Rogers, Ramsey,
DK and Boz great And the last thing I gotta decided.

(54:51):
My sister was texting me from Jersey and all she
kept saying, oh, he should have kept field. To say, Sharis,
let me tell you something. Wait till the fourth quarter
and see if he gets a because I'm telling you,
you kidding, he's not going to get it done. And
he didn't. Guys, I'm just you know, glass half pull baby,
first game killer victory. Want to know, I haven't had

(55:11):
a quarterback. I had faith And I'm crying right now
because I'm excited about you guys. I'm excited about my
football team. I'm tired of hearing everyone whining about this
or whining about that. Yes, so well, we've got some
stuff to do, but you know what, Pittsburgh's going to
the super Bowl. I got a feeling, all right, That's
what I gotta say.

Speaker 2 (55:33):
Appreciate the call, Salvator. I'm not down on Broderick Jones.

Speaker 3 (55:37):
Still, No, I'm not either. I'm not.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
I'm just not.

Speaker 3 (55:40):
This was the first game that we've seen him in
this position. And whatever opinion you may have in him
at right tackle that that's your personal opinion. But where
he is at this particular point is the toughest job
on that offensive line and a couple plays in there
that he needs to clean up. But I think he's
going to get better as the season goes on, at
least from week one to week two. And that's why
I say, if we're having this conversation next week, then

(56:01):
we could be concerning.

Speaker 2 (56:03):
Back to the funds.

Speaker 24 (56:04):
We go.

Speaker 2 (56:04):
Adam in Georgia, You're up next with Mike and Charlie.
How are you, Adam.

Speaker 11 (56:12):
Hey doing well?

Speaker 16 (56:14):
Just wanting to say that some of it was pretty
good that U we can get.

Speaker 10 (56:20):
Haupy here in one of tho we may.

Speaker 14 (56:21):
Not like we'll see tomorrow morning, but a tick way.

Speaker 16 (56:26):
I appreciate what you got, Evan, and good Steelers.

Speaker 2 (56:30):
Okay, thanks for the call. I appreciate that. And uh yeah,
one of those better know once.

Speaker 3 (56:34):
Absolutely, And it's to your point earlier in the show
when you said, hey, you much rather teach in this
particular moment after a win versus saying, man, we were close.
We should have won that game, but they were able
to get out of it. It wasn't indominant performance performance
by any means, and we're not saying that. But when
you're able to win games like this, that's the part
that continues to silently gain that confidence. Knowing that you

(56:56):
can go in the stadiums and come out with the victory.

Speaker 2 (56:58):
You know they're going to be close games more often
than and I know there's been some consternation over the years,
so as the Steelers have gone through this quarterback shuffle thing,
everybody thinks Mike Tomlin wants to win twelve nine. He doesn't.
He wants to win.

Speaker 3 (57:11):
However, I get it done.

Speaker 2 (57:12):
They're able to win thirty four to thirty two today,
So I think that clears up that narrative. Thanks to
call Anti PiZZ In draft House for bringing us this
hour the Pittsburgh Steelers Audio Network postgame Show Kelly Anti
Pizzin Draft House, The Pizza of Champions. The Postgame Show
continues right here on the Steelers Audio.

Speaker 1 (57:31):
Network Scheme show is presented by Caliente Pizza and Drafthouse
The Pizza of Champions.

Speaker 18 (57:37):
Back to pass looking looking pump Fakes now steps.

Speaker 2 (57:40):
Up, throws and has a man wide open.

Speaker 18 (57:42):
It's Metcalf to thirty to the right, crosses the twenty
before he's hit out of bounds near the eighteen yard line,
and so Metcalf moving left to right gets the reception
they're gonna actually mark them out of bounds at the
seventeen first down.

Speaker 23 (57:55):
Steelers and DK I asked him to do something because
we were roommates and kind of like we shared a bathroom,
in a shower and in camp. And I told him,
way back, a long time ago, I said, hey, give
me a report on Monday, a game week about how
you see things Monday or Tuesday, how you see things
going a week and what you like. And then kind

(58:15):
of forgot about it. And then on Tuesday, I guess
what I got, I got a text message with his
his thoughts and it wasn't the short one. It was
like he put a lot of time into it. And
that's what everybody loves about DK is he really cares
about it.

Speaker 2 (58:28):
Welcome back to the Steelers Postgame Show on the Steelers
Audio Network, brought to you by Kellyente Pizzin Drafthouse The
Pizza of Champions. Four one two, three, three, three, nine,
three eight three is our number. That was Aaron Rodgers
a moment ago talking about DK Metcalf, who, again, Charlie,
a different, different kind of guy than what we've seen
around here. And uh, no offense to George Pickens, who

(58:51):
has a boatload of talent. But DK Metcalf is a
different kind of number one receiver. He got targeted seven today,
caught four of them, including that pinball play at the
end on what became the drive for the game winning
field goal. But eighty three receiving yards Calvin Austin third,

(59:12):
seventy receiving yards including a touchdown for one game at least,
they were a very viable number one and number two combo.

Speaker 3 (59:20):
No, yeah, and that's going to get better. And I
love you know just that that conversation happened back in
July and people are looking like, what do you mean
you have a shower? And you know, remember they're in
the dorms. This is college dorms, so you have you're
a suite mate. Essentially you share a bathroom. And that
wasn't done by accident. That was done so those two
can build a rapport and talk every single day outside

(59:41):
of the of the field and meeting room. So again
you're starting to see that combination jail and that's going
to continue to get better as we move forward.

Speaker 2 (59:48):
Four one, two, three, three, three nine three eight three
is our number. You can also reach us via Twitter
at Charlie Batch sixteen or at DV Mike Charles Wyatt
tweeting Charlie. Hopefully the defense soft due to a lack
of preseason reps by many starters, because it will be
a big problem down the road if this level of
play continues. Yes, it will too much financial investment in

(01:00:09):
the defense to play like that. Again, absolutely spot.

Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
Of everything you're saying. But I promise you they know
that as well. Coming out of that locker room, back
to the.

Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
Phone lines, we go, Jack in Pittsburgh, you're up with
Mike and Charlie, how are you, Jack?

Speaker 16 (01:00:25):
Well, Hey, I'm doing great. Guys, really appreciates you both.
You're just awesome A plus professionals. And I wanted to
give a shout out to somebody that I really missed
today and somebody that I did not miss today. I
really miss Craig Wolfley. For years, I would just turn
down the television and sync up the TV feed with
just to hear Fleet, Marie and May I had so

(01:00:48):
much energy to the broadcast and such a great man
and I heard the real man of God and just
so said for his widow and and his family. But
just a shout out to wolf and really miss him
the person I didn't miss.

Speaker 9 (01:01:03):
And I love.

Speaker 16 (01:01:04):
I love Kean Hayward and I know on this podcast
he kind of went off on people that talked about
his brother Connor. But guys, I'm just asking you to
be honest with me for a second.

Speaker 21 (01:01:14):
Like, he's not a tight end.

Speaker 16 (01:01:16):
Obviously, he's but my size. He's not a running back
in the NFL maybe at Michigan State. No offense, Mike,
but uh, but he's not a he's not a wide receiver.
And then he gets that ridiculous penalty on special teams,
and that's the kind of energy he brings to special teams,
like we just don't need it. And special teams was
bad today, like we're not. I don't think anybody's brought

(01:01:38):
that up yet, but but the special team's got galves
throughout the whole game and we didn't have. I don't
think any splash plays on returns. And if he's like
a core member, that's a problem because I'm not sure
what he does to hold down up spiral in the
fifty three. What do you guys think?

Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
Well, Uh, just real quick, Mike, because I was in
the car what happened on the Hayward penalty.

Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
Late hit after he knocked the guy down and got
a fifteen yarder. I'm gonna disagree with you, Jack, He's
a core special teamer. Their special teams were among the
best in the NFL last year, and they made a
splash play today, uh forced fumble and fumble recovery part
of the two touchdowns in fifty seconds turn around, which
really got him back in the game. I think Connor

(01:02:21):
Hayward's an easy target, and I think people are putting
two and two together and not coming up with four
just because Cam was in a difficult situation where he
was in a contract squabble with the team and uh
it was high profile.

Speaker 28 (01:02:36):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
They like Connor Hayward. Danny Smith's a pretty good special
teams coordinator and he wants Connor Hayward on his team
because he thinks he helps. And I think you mentioned
all the things that he's not, but he can play
a lot of different roles for you, and he can
make complimentary plays in certain situations when the matchup is right.
They have bigger problems to take me.

Speaker 16 (01:02:57):
Can I have one quick thing?

Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
Sure?

Speaker 16 (01:03:00):
So, Charlie, when you go back and watch that play,
it actually was a splash play on special teams that
was negated out of just this foolishness. And I think
if you're a core special teamer like you don't have
Steve Miles killibrew doing that. So I would encourage you
to go back and watch the play. I'd love to
know what you think.

Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
Absolutely, And I was in the car obviously heading into
the studio. That's why I wasn't able to watch it visibly.
But I think ultimately, when you look at Connor Heyward,
this guy on special teams, he has blocked a punt
in his career. When you look at the tackles that
he has consistently on special teams, that is a viable option.
And if you look at his size, he is a

(01:03:38):
tweener and they call it a hybrid. If fullback position
in the NFL is non extinct, it does not exist anymore.
You might have one or two. But if you are
a fullback, you have to be able to do other
things in the same manner that Connor is able to do.
If he's called upon as a fourth tight end, he
can get down the field and create matchup problems with
that linebacker. So there are things that they do. But again,

(01:04:00):
and he was broad here because you know the pedigree
of the Hayward name. You know what you get with Cam.
You also know what you do here. It's no different
whenever Marquise Pouncey was here, when his brother Mike Pouncey
was coming out of Florida, they tried hard to get
him because they understood the Pouncy pedigree that you were getting.
It's not uncommon. And we solid in TJ. Watt with
Derrick Watt here. You just know it and it's going

(01:04:20):
to continue to happen. And now you start to see
the you know, the family divisions that are happening right now,
and now you're starting to see second generation of players
that are coming in and they actually get a graded
a little higher because of the pedigree in the family name.
That's just what's going to happen.

Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
Jack. It was a bad penalty, no question. But if
I'm looking at stuff that's wrong with today's game, Connor
Heyward's penalty is way down on the list, behind inability
to run the ball, inability to stop the run, pass protection.
It wasn't good enough. Pressure that wasn't good enough, containment
of Justin Field's that wasn't good enough. There's a lot guys,
a lot higher up on the food chain today that

(01:04:55):
had worse games than Connor Hayward.

Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
And I'm not worried about Connor Haleward one bit. Gohea,
I'm sorry, go say And.

Speaker 16 (01:05:01):
Number one, I love Cam Hayward and I love the
I love the extra money he got. I think it's great,
and I think he was undervalued. So this is no
hate at all on Cam Hayward at all. Like that
guy's giving his heart and soul to this team for
a long long time, and I love the way they
came to terms on this new deal, because that's what
we all want. We want post to season success, that's

(01:05:23):
what Cam wants. And I hope he gets every penny
of that money because that's going to mean that's going
to be really an awesome year for the Steelers. But
appreciate you guys both a lot. I think you're awesome.
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
Thanks for to call Jack and thanks to Callienti Pizzin
Draft House for bringing us this hour. The Pittsburgh Steelers
Audio Network postgame Show Caliente PiZZ In, Draft House, The
Pizza of Champions The Steelers Post Game Show continues right
here on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show. It was presented by Caliente
Pizza and Draft House The Pizza of Champions.

Speaker 18 (01:05:53):
Fields gets a snap back to pass looking steps up
in the pocket, hasn't room, throws to his left and.

Speaker 19 (01:05:58):
The ball is just a lot Jalen Ramsey wallops Garrett Wilson.
It is incomplete, and Ramsey makes the play that seals
a victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 13 (01:06:10):
To glad he's on my team. I've seen it in
stadiums before. A lot of these new Steelers.

Speaker 7 (01:06:16):
Man.

Speaker 13 (01:06:18):
You know, we've covered it for a long time and
sometimes it's just about opportunity. I've certainly been an appreciator
of his skills and talents. Can't say enough about him.

Speaker 12 (01:06:26):
Man.

Speaker 13 (01:06:26):
He played nickel, he played free safety, he played outside corner.
He is a top nie football player and I'm glad
he's on our team.

Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
Welcome back to the Steels postgame show on the Steelers
Audio Network, brought to you by Calliente Pizza and Drafthouse
to Pizza of Champions. Mike Tomlin talking about Jalen Ramsey
and I think there's gonna be a lot of talk
about Jayleen Ramsey throughout this season. He's not the impact,
high profile guy Aaron Rodgers is as far as additions
to the team are concerned, but Ramsey is not far behind.

(01:06:58):
And man, he changes the whole dynamic of that defense.

Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
He really does. And when you hear Mike tom and
talk about it's a three time All Pro in addition
to the other, you know, seven time Pro bowler, So
that means he's getting it done at a high level.
And what I like about what he did today and
moving around in multiple positions, it's going to be tough
for offensive coordinator to predict where he's going to line up.
So that's going to be advantaged you to Steelers that
they can take advantage of.

Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
And that hit he made at the end of the game, Charlie,
the one at the end of the first half when
he just powdered justin Fields right after Fields delivered a pass.
When he's out there, you keep your head up and
you know where he is or preced at your own risk.
And that's a violence and a viciousness. I kept going
back to Andy Wilde's words, you need that on defense.

(01:07:42):
Let's go back to the telephones now, John in Cleveland,
Thanks for hanging in there. John, you're up with Mike
and Charlie. Hey, how you guys doing doing great? How's
things in Cleveland?

Speaker 15 (01:07:52):
Oh? Man, they're amazing. Hey, wait before we get thundered.
I just got to say, Charlie, Man, you're a big
inspiration to me. Steelers game I ever saw it was
in Cleveland. It was like twenty twelve. We went for
my dad's birthday and Ben was hurt and you made
the start and I got to watch you play. And
then after that I went to the youth youth football

(01:08:16):
camp in Slippery Rock, and I got to meet you
and it's yeah, man, it's it's a pleasure to be
talking to you.

Speaker 3 (01:08:23):
I appreciate that, Thank you very much.

Speaker 15 (01:08:25):
Yeah, it's no problem. But yeah, I mean, guys, I
gotta say this is this is probably the best Steelers
quarterback debut we've ever seen. Right, I mean, four touchdowns,
over sixty percent completions, like, no turnovers. I mean, that's
this is the best debut we've ever seen. It doesn't matter,
Ben Bradshaw Maddox. This this has got to be the

(01:08:49):
best debut we've ever seen from a Steelers quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
Right, pretty good, you're testing my memory. But what I
really like about it You mentioned it the no turnovers,
and it's still like he threw the big one. It's
not like he threw for five hundred and eighty yards.
He threw for two hundred and forty four. But he
made the throws count absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:09:10):
And here's what one exactly, here's the one that you
know where you talked about Aaron Rodgers and it was
a tweet that was that was out there by Alex Cazora.
I think it is he says since nineteen ninety he
said Steelers QB to throw for two touchdowns in the
first half in Week one since nineteen ninety had been three.
Aaron Rodgers em Roethlisberger and some dude by naming Charlie Batch.

(01:09:31):
I was like, Oh, that's a pretty cool tweet. I'm like, okay,
I like that one two thousand and six.

Speaker 15 (01:09:35):
Okay, Oh Jory Sly coming in.

Speaker 2 (01:09:39):
Hot A, Tennessee.

Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
That was against Miami Dolphins coming off to the Super
Bowl forty.

Speaker 2 (01:09:46):
So I like it.

Speaker 29 (01:09:47):
So yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:09:48):
But but yeah, to your point, good, you were talking
about Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 15 (01:09:52):
No, yeah, I mean, I just you know, I gotta
be honest. I had a lot of doubts coming into
this season about him. I wasn't a big fan of
a signing him over fields. But but not, I mean,
he was great man. And you know, I know, I
know the Jets don't have Robert Styla anymore, but so
I mean that that defense has talent on it and
he I mean, he made him look like he made

(01:10:14):
him look like idiots. He was running around, he was
getting the ball, throwing. He he just looked good. There's
no other way to put it. He just looked great.

Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
I mean, he's still Aaron Rodgers and I thought Justin
Field's played really well today. And if they would have
committed to Justin Field, I mean they made there was
negotiations with Fields. There were talks. It was there was
a possibility he would be their quarterback. I'm not sure
if you know, he got more money from the Jets,
so the Steelers had less guaranteed, or he didn't like
the commitment or whatever it was, but Fields would have

(01:10:46):
been more of a long term proposition, right. Aaron Rodgers
brought here to Aaron Rodgers was brought here to win now,
and they're probably gonna have to go They're gonna have
to go through this again next year in terms of
finding a quarterback. But as well as Bustin Field's played today,
he was the second best quarterback on the field. The
other guy won the.

Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Game absolutely, And like to your point, he is brought here.
When you look back at just what Aaron Rodgers can do,
the worst season that he's ever had from a completion
percent is sixty percent, You're like, wow, that's it. So
but again, this guy is not going to lose the
game for you. And that's why he was here to
close it out because they truly feel that they have

(01:11:25):
the pieces in place. Obviously, it's going to have to
get better week by week to be able to compete.
And you know they're not being talked about nationally, but
internally in that building, they truly feel they have the
pieces here.

Speaker 15 (01:11:37):
Tell you, if they get better week by week, we're
gonna be looking at a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh this year.

Speaker 7 (01:11:41):
I'll tell you that.

Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
Well, let's just worry about Seattle right now. Right, thanks
for the call, John, Let's let's move on and welcome
Sherry from East Liverpool. Sherry, you're on with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 28 (01:11:54):
Hi guys, Hi Mike, Hi Charlie.

Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
How are you doing well? How about yourself?

Speaker 10 (01:11:59):
I'm great?

Speaker 28 (01:12:00):
Never forget the Baltimore game. My question is this, how
do you, as insiders, compare this year's ability and confidence
and enthusiasm with last year, the year before, or the
most recent Super Bowl teams?

Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
Well?

Speaker 3 (01:12:16):
I think this is definitely a team, a team in progress.
They know they're not even close to scratching the surface
on where they're hoping to be at this particular point,
but they do believe that they have the pieces in
place to make a championship run. So again, it's just
something that we're ultimately going to have to see each
week as it relates to how better, how much more
improved that they go week to week.

Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
Yeah, defensively, they think they can be really good. Now
they clearly were not today, but it's one game offensively, Sherry,
when you look at Aaron Rodgers, and this is not
meant as a criticism of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields
or anybody that's played between Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers,
but there is just a much more fervent belief in Rogers. Yeah,

(01:12:59):
and that's because he's just a very rare guy. He
is a four time MVP at a Super Bowl winner,
and Tom Brady was quoted recently about how he thinks
Rogers is the best pure pass that that's ever done
it right. And what's really gotten the Steelers players attention
is the timing and accuracy of Rogers and the arm talent.

(01:13:22):
And when you have that, you have belief. Sherry.

Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
Absolutely. And here's the one thing that I'm not trying
to put excuses out there, but when you look at
where Week one is, it was a guest because new
coaching staff, you didn't know what system they were going
to run. They took advantage of those opportunities. Here today, now,
moving forward, when you start game planning and you now
have game footage to actually put together a game plan,
hopefully we don't see these problems that we're here today.

Speaker 28 (01:13:48):
Well, I know we're hearing good things on the outside
about the offense, defense and everything, but it's good to
hear it from you guys. Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
Appreciate the call, Sherry, and thanks to Kelly Anti Peach
in Draft House for bringing us this out. The Pittsburgh
Steelers Audio Network Postgame Show Calliente Pizza, Drafthouse The Pizza
of Champions. The show continues right here on the Steelers
Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (01:14:11):
The Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Show, which was presented by Calliente
Pizza and Drafthouse The Pizza of Champions.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
Welcome back to the postgame show and the Steelers Audio Network,
brought to you by Calliente pizzin Draft House, The Pizza
of Champions. Four one two three, three nine three eight
three is our number. Back to the phones we go,
Clint in Pittsburgh. Thanks for your patience, Clint, You're on
with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 7 (01:14:37):
Hey, gentlemen, how are you doing today?

Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
Doing well? No complaints?

Speaker 7 (01:14:42):
You know what I want to say this about this
this game today, right, this was a class. This was
this this game and this was the scoring was way
better than what I thought it was going to be.
But the one thing I can't say about both teams
is this is that well, first of all, with Pittsburgh,

(01:15:03):
when you have a guy like Aaron Rodgers at the
age that he is, you need to have people that
are going to be around that going to be playmakers.
That's what he had today, guys that were making plays
he plays in the game to make, from offense to defense.
Everybody played well. And as far as with the Jets, listen, guys,

(01:15:26):
we can no longer say that Jets are the Jets
because Aaron glenn Went is going in there and he
is not playing around. I don't know if you heard
his interview at halftime today, but I love what he
said about that penalty that his player got before halftime,
and he said, that's unacceptable and this is going to
be addressed. When somebody's coming around to change something, they

(01:15:47):
have to be all in or if not, they're going
to be out. I love that both sides did really
really well today. Justin field. Some happy for him, and
you know, sometimes change is good. And as far as
Aaron Rodgers, I don't know what else to say about
this guy. He played a great guy. But he showed
the type of leadership that he has, the veteran leadership.

(01:16:10):
When the Steelers were down, guess what did he panic? No,
he came in there and say give me the ball,
Give me the ball. I'm going to make things happen.
They make a turn though, they make the just fumble
off of a kickoff, he comes in touchdown. Now you're
in the league. Okay, listen, things like that. The defense, offense,

(01:16:30):
great game, got a long way to go. But I mean,
you gotta be proud with today's performance.

Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
And I agree with you. And I think I'm hoping
two months from now we sit here at the beginning
of November, I hope we're talking to say, Wow, Theyjets
weren't that bad of a team, because they are out
there winning and competing in their division. And if we
can say, you wonder what, I'm glad we squeaked out
a week one with the victory because they've actually turned
out pretty good. So everything. To your point of how
Aaron Glenn is changing the mindset of that team, great

(01:16:58):
for him. We just hope that often mainly we continue
to get better and not allowing these mistakes to continue.

Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
And to your point about Rogers, Clint, I know they
pulled the game out in Washington last year late in
the game, and it's happened a few times, but well
but it Steel's got the Paul back. Is the way
that with the time remaining when they did and all
they needed was a field goal, I felt pretty confident
they were going to win the game, right, And I
can't really say I felt that way for a while.

Speaker 7 (01:17:24):
I agree with you on that, right, anything else for us, Okay, no, no, gentlemen,
that's it. You all have a great show and everything
is great hearing you every week and listen, at least
we're not talking about the mess that's been going on
from the previous years from receivers with their attitudes for
people going up and down the sidelines, yelling at each

(01:17:46):
other or anything like that. This today, this today was
great and you know, just looking to have more victories
throughout the season.

Speaker 2 (01:17:54):
Appreciate the phone called, Clint. Let's go back to the phones,
Jeremy in Ohio. You're on with Mike and Charlie.

Speaker 29 (01:18:03):
Hey, guys, how you doing to I doing great?

Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
How you doing not too bad?

Speaker 29 (01:18:08):
Uh just want to say, big fan, love job that
you guys do. Uh covering the Steelers every week and uh,
Mike listen to the morning show every day. Uh hear
all to talk about wide receiver too. And Uh, for
the most part, I'm pretty much on board with you.
And one thing I hadn't thought about as a consequence
of not having that, you know, reliable number two that

(01:18:31):
I saw today was the defensive ability to really roll
that extra guy down.

Speaker 8 (01:18:36):
In the box to help starts of run.

Speaker 30 (01:18:40):
And Uh, I just kind of wondered what your your
thoughts on that were. In A big fan of Calvin Austin,
he does a great job. I'd like to see him
really keep growing and become that number two for us,
but with him not quite being there yet. Uh, just
kind of what your thoughts are on that.

Speaker 2 (01:18:55):
You know, I'll say this, Jeremy, the coaching staff has
been Adam and they believe Calvin Austin's number two. Yes,
they think without a doubt he is a number two
caliber NFL receiver. I'm living in my fears on that one.
He's awful small, and I wonder how long he's going
to be available to them. But what I loved about

(01:19:16):
the game today as much as anything, was third and
eleven from the Jets forty two, a minute twelve left.
They're still trailing at this point, and they went for
the throat. They took a shot one on one. They
trusted Calvin Austin. There might have been paid past interference
on that play, maybe it gets called, it didn't in
this case, but then they just it didn't work, so

(01:19:38):
they kicked the field goal, but they trusted Rogers and Charlie.
They trusted Calvin Austin in a critical moment. That's it.

Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
That lets you know Aaron is comfortable with this receiving group.
Because again I'm looking one on one coverage, probably everybody
in the stadium thought he was going to DK and
his safety started creeping over here, saying there's no way for.

Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
They run a little check down and try to get
five more yards or something something safe.

Speaker 3 (01:19:59):
It's just a fact that when the game was on
the line, he did not hesitate to make it, to
attempt to throw that football down the field. The Calvin Austin.
That's beautiful. I love where they are because you see
the maturation that's happening with that group.

Speaker 2 (01:20:11):
I'd still like to get another one. But you know,
one game in, so far, so good. They had the
they had the one two punch going today.

Speaker 3 (01:20:17):
Yes they did. And on the flip side, I know
he talked about the safety position and trying to figure
out now we're going to be tested with our debt
because right now we don't know how long Deshaun Elliott
is going to be out. I know Chuck Coop uh,
Chuck Clark Clark is here as well, but then also
you know, again he's the basketball but you have, you know,
a nigga. You have the rookie from Iowa, Sebastian Castro.

(01:20:38):
You know that they're high on. He's on the practice squad.
Maybe he has an opportunity now to be elevated to
the point of now adding to that safety rotation. But again,
we'll all hear that on Tuesday with Tomlins press conference.

Speaker 29 (01:20:49):
Anything else, Jeremy that you guys are doing a good
job that you did every.

Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
Day, appreciate it. Let's just sneak one more in before
the break Bill I don't even know how to pronounce
the name of your Tom Peaqua, Ohio.

Speaker 25 (01:21:03):
Is that it close enough? Hello, and thank you guys

to Steeler Nation. I got three things I'd like for you.

Speaker 2 (01:21:14):

number three a quick touch on the rookies and second
year players that did get in the game.

Speaker 2 (01:21:27):
Bill.

Speaker 7 (01:21:28):
Thank you, We'll.

Speaker 2 (01:21:28):
