Speaker 1 (00:00):
I was staying on the way down there, like ray Lewis.
I used to love ray Lewis helmet. I don't. He
just looked and he had the brace on his arm
and yeah, there everybody in this in this he's alleged. Yeah,
he's he's you do the dumps. I can't do that.
I've never tried. You never tried. Respect. Respect. Marlon Humphrey
(00:25):
is without a doubt in the conversation to be the
best corner in football. Aw we doing, guys, back to
Studio forty four on the road in M ANDT Bank Stadium,
and I got two Arsenal players here, Rob Holding and
Taki Hero Tommy Asu. Guys, introduce yourselves, um and uh,
(00:48):
tell us what you guys are doing in town. Yeah,
we're here on a preseason tour, so get fit, play
a few games. We've got Everton on Saturday here at
the M and T and uh, and then we go
to Orlando and play two games there. But ye've been
a good trip so far. So I know you're new
here to the States obviously playing what are you Timmy?
(01:09):
What are you looking forward to kind of while you're
here for the next two weeks of kind of being
in the States. Yeah, all right, groups say we are
here to prepare holes in your season. We could go
to three games, so yeah, just we need to for
pare holes in your season outside of being here. Now,
have you ever have you ever been to the States before? Yes? Once?
(01:34):
Once before? What are you here for that? So if
I don't know where I went? Did you win? No? Yeah,
we've ro against the USA? What about you? Yeah? I
come regularly. My offseason is pretty much spend all the
time in the States, spend all the time. What stay
(01:55):
do you used to say California, California. Yeah, I go,
It's California. I was down in l and then up
to Sacramento. Yeah, went to Nashville. Bit actually went to
Tennessee for definitely. It's a great place to be. Always sunny,
the weather's like always football essential as well when in
the off season, every time you go somewhere there's people
that you know. Yeah, because if it's that time of season,
(02:17):
everyone goes there. How long is you guys? Off season?
Usually a month and a half. I mean I had
longer than Tommy. Tommy three weeks, you had three weeks.
He had three weeks. Depends on the pre he had
international games straight after the season, so he had three
games in ten days, eleven days, four games, four games,
four games in ten days. Oh yeah, I'm curious. So
(02:39):
I know football, like after a game. I mean, you
guys obviously aren't getting hit, but after a game, I
feel a little rough body wise, far as hitting each
other all that stuff. What kind of goes into you guys' recovery?
Like after a game, Um, this guy looks up his
buddy like he's a machine. It's good. He played every
(03:00):
minute though he came in last sason. He was just
like physical specimen, you know, just like looks after his body.
I mean we have my lockers like two down from him,
and he has like all these supplements and everything in that.
But yeah, we just got after games. I think it's
more just legs, heavy legs, Yeah, normally good up top,
but ice baths, massages like the inflatable boot things. Yeah, well,
(03:24):
Sam Sager, being being from Japan, that's obviously a different thing.
How is that kind of transition being from Japan and
now playing where you play? Has that been m m? Yeah, sure,
there's a there's a big difference between Japan and UK.
But Primer League is the best rigue in the world
(03:46):
I think, and the best most fish fish league in
the world. So and the Dusty I've got out of
injured because I think I needed to adapt, adapt for
the Premier League. So yeah, as I said before, not
(04:09):
only for the team only, also for for me. I
need to prepare for the new season. How often does
family and friends that are from back home get to
come to your play? I'm sure as they didn't come yet,
so there haven't been. Yeah, there haven't been down So yeah,
(04:31):
I'm looking hard to come to stimy stream me in UK.
So Rob, what is I know? You guys are from
all over? What is the locker room like as far
as like different players from all over like language their
language bearers? Yeah, the completely I mean Tommy's English is
pretty good. Like there's there's lots that was just signed
(04:52):
a new Portuguese player in English is non existent at
the moment, but it will be pick it up quick
and by the end of the season it'll be speaking
with the lots. But yeah, like Tommy's culture Japan is
completely different to English culture. Then you've got a lot
of South Americans, like a lot of Brazilians in the team.
So there's people from all over You've got African lads
you've got and then all over your all over Europe.
(05:13):
You've got everybody all different languages. So you sometimes German, Portuguese, Spanish,
you're a little bit of Japanese from you and we
have a we have a fitness coach who who was
Japanese as well. So here a bit of Japanese word.
What was the word that you're taught about? Um last year?
What was it? Brother? I killed that colder? Yeah, I
(05:34):
was saying one. I'm like Tommy, you're right, brother, and
then he was brother in Japanese, you know, to sort
of interact with him more so you taught Yeah, I
forgot it straight away. Yeah, there's little things that I
just help people feel welcome is important. So when like
I guess it was just when that happens, like you're
trying to someone that's Portuguese, you said, how does that even?
(05:55):
How do you guys communicate on the field, like if
you have to, if he gets on the team, he
has to jump right in it. Yeah, it's a difficult one.
I know that I speak quite fast. My English is
really fast compared to like some of the some of
the other lads, and some of the form ads don't
understand anything that I say. So I'll speak to someone
like Cedric there was not but next to me as
a right back. He speaks Portuguese in really good English,
and I'll say tell him that he needs to do this,
(06:16):
this and that, and then you'll just translate it if
you need it. To be a nice and quick on
the field, you know. But then I'm more surpres understanding.
Most players understand, but like there's a few that don't
understand me when I talk. Yeah, yeah, sometimes so being
I think the big difference between you know, American football
(06:38):
for actually football football you think of just soccer, yeah,
instantly five year old. That's just taking some getting used to.
But when American football, when you when you start, you
start middle school, high school, you have to go to
a university college, and then you can go to the pros. Well,
(06:59):
I know for you guys, you guys start you can
really start at a very young age. You say you
started at twenty time, I don't know when you started
when you ended up going pro? What age was that?
A team? So being at that pro level at such
a young age, how was kind of that kind of transition.
You say you were a twenty year say you were seventeen,
(07:19):
both under twenty one, How did you kind of handle
like being still a kid while just being right and
started to the pros. Yeah, I feel like we grew
up a lot quicker than so lads that went to
school with. I felt like I was a lot more
mature than then because I'm around in sort of a
group environment where you're always playing up with the year
above sort of things. So I was like, say I
(07:40):
wasn't under fifteen. I'd been training with the under sixteens,
and so you're around people that are a bit older
and you, so you have to mature a bit faster.
And then when I joined Arsking at twenty, the lads
in the change room were like thirty one thirty two
and had won World Cups and stuff, And I'm started
walking as a twenty year old. I can't act like
a kid because they're just well just push you aside.
So you have to start a blending and interact when
(08:01):
you can, but not be too boisterous. You know. Yeah,
so doing that obviously, Well, now obviously did you always
think you'd be here where you guys are at professional athletes?
Playing for for Arsenal. Did you guys always see that
I didn't. I did not not Arsenal. Would you guys
see you guys? What did you guys? I was like,
so I was a Bolton Manders, which was like a
(08:23):
lower league club compared to Arsenal, and like Arsenal is
a global club, and um yeah, I was like, if
I get a career at Bolton and play that rest
of my life, I'd be like, you know, I was
a chief my dream. I'll be happy with that. So
like when I moved to Arsenal, it was it was
crazy and such a change and not doing stuff like this.
I wouldn't have done a Bolton So yeah, me too.
Yeah you go to it straight away. No, no, no,
(08:45):
I was to the Belgium, then Eatery, then Premier Family.
So he's been You've been like Europe and down to
Early and then yeah to London. So four years ago
and I was bringing in your So it's a quick
quick Yeah every year you've moved one year in version
(09:06):
and then two years thirty and then lost us. Now
yeah so outside of football, what other kind of interest
do you have? Yeah? I like what we spoke before
us off camera that I like my NFL and like
most Sundays after our game, I'll sit and do like
a six seven hour block of just me in front
of the TV, eating a cheat meal because we just
played and watching the watching the NFL. How do you
(09:28):
do that with you? You just buy yourself. Well, it
was tough, like during coming out of COVID and like
the lockdown and stuff. We were finishing games and there
was nothing going on anyway, and your league was coming
back on. So yeah, it was just at home on
my almost night's just watching it with the dogs. What
other passions do you have do keep up with outside
of football? I just home? Then, I told you ultimate
(09:49):
professional probably just didn't recovery. I need to find something. Well,
you should go hang out with rop. It's it's interesting.
I think I don't know how in comparison soccer, what
is I don't know. I don't it's very different from soccer. Yeah, well,
these people that don't know it and they try and
(10:12):
watch it and it's like, oh, it's two stops that
I'm not watching it. I'm like, oh, yeah, you need
to know what's going on to understand why there is
a stoppage there. And then you'll get your head around
it more and it won't feel like the stoppage is
as that long exactly. And I think, yeah, we can
now from the other sports. Yeah, yeah, because yours, Yeah, yours.
He's like, there's these like set pieces every single time,
So say we have like a corner or a wide
(10:32):
free kick, the game stops and we set this up.
Whereas every single play is basically like that for you guys.
So everyone knows the role like we do free routines
and people still get it wrong. You guys have like
a playbook of like whatever. I don't know how many
players and everyone knows it, you know. So we can
definitely take bits from that for sure. So we were
talking earlier about American football. You're obviously a fan of it.
(10:54):
Ye who is you telling me earlier? But who's your
who's your favorite player in the league? And then fun
why so I ended up being a fault in NINIS
fan because of my girlfriend lives in Sacramento and all
the falling nineis so I followed the Red and Gold
and then yeah, George Kittle, I love watching him and
play and he's a bit of a beast. George Kittle. Yeah,
(11:15):
he's a beast. He is a beast. I like his game.
But but we have a great time. You gotta now
that you've been here playing a MIT, you gotta look
at this other guy. Yeah, Mark Andrews, Lamar Jackson Mark
Andrews connection is great, another tight end. You might have
to add that guy into the collection. But yeah, George Kittle,
(11:36):
he's he's a great player. So that's that is a
good choice. That's a good choice. But I will I
will check out Andrews. Yeah, check them out. And already
know you do not watch any American football bevens you have.
I was staying on the way down there, like ray Lewis.
I used to love ray Lewis helmet that he just
(11:59):
looked me and he had the breaks on his arm
and yeah, there everybody in this in this he's a
legends him. Yeah, he's he's I can't do. They've never
tried respect, I respect. But he's come to talk to
us a couple of times. He's inspirational guy. He's very
inspirational guy. When he when he speaks, everybody listens. The
stories you hear about him is like it's crazy. It
(12:22):
kind of it makes you feel in some type of way.
But all right, there's something I have to talk about
which is very serious. And you guys are sport. There's
a lot of we call it flopping, but there's a
lot of you know, like a poke and like I'm
on the ground and right head down. What what is
the what is the helped me understand the deal with
(12:45):
Me and him are probably the most don't floppers there
is because we're only hitting the people that jump on
the floor from our positions, and uh yeah, it's frustrating. Hey,
wines Milk and I watched the women's football and they
each other and they just get straight back up and
jog on and carry on, whereas we roll about on
the floor for four minutes. That winds me up. Yeah,
(13:07):
I'm not a fan of the plopping. It is a
part of the game of the game. Yeah, it minds
me of basketball. Basketball is definitely a part of the game.
How to use it to your advantage. It's kind of
like a strategy sometimes you want to get a charge. Yeah,
flopped down. Speaking of players, who's your favorite soccer player?
Tommy else hero Um. When I was a kid, I
(13:34):
was a Man United fan, so I loved run it.
I was obsessed with bruin light. Just every day watching
him play. It was so good. Yeah, he was. He
was by childhood hero, growing up hero you got dummy,
Yeah when I was young. Yeah yeah. Okay, So you
(13:55):
guys are in Baltimore for another two days? Do you
guys are you guys have to We were talking earlier
about a stript or eating schedule. Do you guys get
to eat out or no? No? No, chumps, no chance
we got We got a day off actually next week
in Orlando, so we might be able to sneak something
in that. Man, you guys are very man. We need
to know is going to train and driving past the
(14:15):
chick or Chipotle every time. I need to take some notes.
We we kind of eat. I mean, you can eat
out the facility, but there's like no mandatory meals for
us at all. Eat. I eat at the facility a
lot because I can't walk past free food. But man,
so how do they tailor you guys? Meals like each
individual just like chef cook meals. Yeah, chef will cut
(14:37):
the meals, but then what we choose and what we
have will be tailored to what we need. So, for example,
my body fat is probably higher than Tommy is. So
when we're at the canteen getting the food, the nutrition
is just stood there looking over me, and I'm feeling
his presence looking over me, and I'm like, I'm looking
at the pasta, thinking maybe if you go for the
broccoli or whatever, he's there, Whereas Tommy's, like I said,
(15:00):
it's a machine. You can just think, we have to eat.
What do we want? Yeah, you need a day where
you just enjoy it. Like you said, you have a
cheat day and you can just sort of enjoy yourself
because I think that you need that mental break to
just enjoy yourself if something. Dude, Yeah, I definitely have
my fair year of cheat days. All right. So I
don't know how long you guys want to play helpfully
as long as you want. What do you see yourself doing?
(15:22):
In How old are you Timmy again? Twenty three? What's
age for a soccer player? Old age for a soccer player?
I'd say if you're still playing at like a good
level thirty three thirty four, you've done very well. All right.
You guys are both forty years old. What do you
(15:43):
see yourself doing? Five years old? Forty years old on
the beach in California, somewhere. Wait, Tommy Takes. Here's a
Carabis body player that's like Fty something else, fifty fifty
still playing in the Japanese League. Fifty five years old. Yeah,
(16:06):
he's in tom Brady Sorry, who's what's his name? What's
his name? Yeah? Gosh, she was in. Yeah, five names.
So you'll be on a beach. Where will you be
if you're not playing? I have not playing, obviously, I'll
(16:30):
be in Japan. Stif is my primary do nothing? I
like it? Okay, um, last question for you. Do you
know a single NFL player? Wow? It's one stony in
the face. Okay, all right, guys, I thank you guys
(16:53):
for coming on the show. That is crazy, still mind boggling,
but I appreciate you guys are coming on having thank
you good luck this weekend. You see that certain h
