Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome back to the Exchange, your favorite podcast with me
and yours truly, Mark Sanchez, where we talk about a
lot of things. And we got a very special guest
today in Near and Dear to my Heart because he's
a QB and that fires me up. Near and Dear
to my Heart because I protect you. He's that's right.
So this works um. Looking for the studio. We're in

(00:29):
studio for the first time together together. But we also
have just a real plot twist that kind of caught
me off guard. And somebody who do we like to
welcome in three people. Actually one of them we know
is Mr Johnson. The other two you know as former teammates. Nick,
this is your surprise as well. Mr Johnson, come on

(00:50):
in and let these guys. Hey guys, Oh, it's read
to see you, Greg, Darrell Greeve. We got this big
guy here. I just want to give this a special
day for the Jets, and I want to let you
know that all three of you guys are gonna be
inducted into our Ring of Honor big Away. Now, it's

(01:17):
a it's the highest, it's the highest award we can
give you, and just thank you for what you legendary
work that you did with the New York Jets, and
we're so proud of all of you and look forward
to sharing that day with you. It's just an honor.
It's just an honor to uh actually, um, celebrate this
with you guys. You know we've we've done so much.

(01:40):
I will always go to bat for you three guys.
I mean we've done it for a number of years
when we played together. So it's just an honor. Uh.
You know, congratulations Nick, Congratulations britishaw uh and Mark. You
know we did have some battles in one on ones. Uh.
I believe you you also made me better as well

(02:01):
when we competed against each other. So I appreciate your brother,
appreciate you guys. Brick. Um, what's this mean to you?
And do you have any favorite memories of Rivus or
Nick Mangold? Very quickly one that just jumps out in
your mind. Well, I'm definitely honored and you know, thank you. Um.
So what do you? Nick Levis and Mark them and

(02:24):
all you guys were part of this. Um. I think
when you talk about memories, you always think about the
championship games when we were really rolling and it felt
like we were invincible. So I think those times are
are are things you don't forget and uh, you know
you always remember them no matter where you are, you know,
in your life and how things are. So again, I'm

(02:46):
very thankful and I appreciate that they keep taking home. UM. Yeah,
this is a shock. Thank you so much. Is awesome, amazing,
especially being with um two of my guys. Uh you know, Revous,
it's outstanding. UM. Just being on the team with you,
like your presence was amazing and so uh to be

(03:06):
with this honor with you is awesome. In the brick
we started this together um back in Mobile, Alabama. UM,
and now we close it up together. UM. And so
that's something very special to me and and something that
uh is an awesome, awesome thing. So UM, congratulations you two.
I feel like I'm the third wheel here. UM. So
I appreciate you guys letting me in. UM, but it

(03:29):
is it's it's definitely an honor UM and I can't
wait to uh to start the celebrations. Uh. So we
got Nick Mangold here on the Exchange podcast in the
Flesh with the whole crew, all four kids and Mama Jennie,
who refuses to be on camera, but we will recognize
her for these beautiful children. Aren't you supposed to be
in school? Yeah? What's the deal? They got to skept

(03:50):
school and see pops go into the Ring of Honor.
It's gotta be the best feeling in the world. I'm
happy for you. Man. Talk to us about the emotions
you're feeling. Know, it's it's it's. Uh, it's amazing because
you know, I started in the NFL without kids. Um
started having my kids through the NFL. Uh, this little one,

(04:10):
um wasn't around, and so now that she's here for
uh these festivities, Uh, it's pretty awesome. So it's a
it's cool to have have these guys be able to
share in all of this. It's so good to share
with you. Well, thank you so much, guys for coming
to join us. Anything you want to say to your dad,
you gotta talk in the microphone, so you do it.

(04:30):
You're the you're the oldest boy. Talk for him. What
do you want to say? I just wanted to say
congratulations to my dad. I was gonna do it. He did,
he did. Thank you, buddy Love in the Mangold household.
All right, Well, that was a very interesting start to

(04:51):
our podcast. But I'm super excited about it, and I'm
even more excited the fact that we are in person,
sitting down with my new favorite quarter. Wow. Sorry, Jack Wilson,
Welcome to the Exchange. Me and Mark were obviously, UM,
super excited to have you on UH and kind of
chatted up a little bit. Absolutely, I'm excited to be here.
We gotta tell him about the intro. He's got no idea.

(05:13):
So Nick is going to have his big ugly face
on one of these pictures behind us here. Deserves it forever.
He's going into the Ring of Honor. Maybe we should
put him behind the tackling dummies. That would make sense. Actually,
I want my little corner of it. I think like,
if I can get my own corner, that would be
kind of cool. But yes, it was special. It was
a full surprise. Is today My kids came in, Um
they got out of school release so they were happy.

(05:34):
So that was pretty It's awesome. Excited for you, A
big deal for the big guy. UM. But in the
spirit of O. T a S. Talk to us about
your second year. I know you're going into um, your
second go round with O. T A S. I feel like,
if I can remember anything from rookie year. I know
it was just a blur, right, and especially here in
New York, it's bigger. It's more than anything. But now

(05:57):
you're you're in your second year, you look like you're
in full command it out there in practice. How nice
is it going into the same system, the same language,
seeing a lot of the same players, and then adding
what you guys added in the draft, right, I I
do think that's a big deal, you know, keeping the
same coaching staff, you know with us, Uh, you know,
for me, I feel like the biggest difference is, you know,
I'm still making mistakes. You know, it's not like, hey,

(06:19):
everything's fixed now, but it's like I make a mistake
and it's least, oh, I know why I made that mistake,
and next time I run this play, this is what
I'm gonna be looking for. It's like I have a
better understanding for at least what's going on, and I
feel like everybody else does as well. So just having
that second year, you can just compare so much about
with what you know you went through, and uh, it
does make it more fun because you know, you get
that challenge every day of Okay, yesterday I messed up

(06:42):
on this play. Here's another rep at it awesome. But
that's what I feel like, um, because I saw a
handful of rookie quarterbacks come through and you know that
first year when you just get through, never made mistakes. No,
of course, not you. I'm talking about rookie quarterbacks. Um.
I think I think we've got a quick break here.
I think, oh my Marks a big hot dog guy.
I've heard so okay, because I know you like mustard

(07:09):
on it, Nick gets ring of honor. I got a
hot dog, I got it. Yeah, that's what you get.
So seeing these guys well here, and I don't blame you.
I don't want them to uh to choke and try
to talk. Yeah, just natural. Um, I saw that you
get thrown into the fire, you know as you're coming
in as a rookie. But now, like you're talking about,
you know, you you make a mistake and you're feeling

(07:29):
more comfortable because you now understand the mistake and you
know fixing it much quicker. Um, how much? How does
that feel? Comfortability wise? Even more so in like the
locker room with the guys like you've been with this
team now, Um, you've met these guys like you've you've
been a part of them. Um, you know, do you
feel more comfortable in the locker room? You know, you
now have relationships building. I think that's something that it

(07:50):
starts to come around, especially in your two Yeah. Absolutely,
I feel like that that leadership role as a rookie
is always challenging because it's like, you know, I haven't
proven myself yet, So how do I just walk into
a lot room and and try and be commanding of
guys and you know, try and be assertive And you know,
I'm already not a big vocal guy, you know, getting
up in front of the team and giving those ra
ra speeches or you know, whatever it is. So I

(08:11):
feel like as their relationship grows, you know, the guys
see you know, the time that you put in, how
much you care about the game, and and then just
your progress and how seriously you take football. You know,
you start to be able to to increase your ability
to be a good leader. And and it doesn't always
have to be in those vocal ways. They just see
it in the in the way that you prepare, in
the way that you show up every day. And so, uh,
that's that's a big one. I feel like we're We're

(08:33):
very tired as a team, and I feel like that's important.
I feel like the ability to walk around the locker
room and you know everybody's story a little bit and
you can connect on an emotional level is a big deal.
And so every day I'm trying to just continue to
work on that. And that takes time, that takes the effort,
that takes you. Going backfrom city, he's doing a little
tour to go throw with specific guys. Talk about that.
It was Miami, it was somewhere in Tennessee. I want

(08:53):
to say. So, I've always been a big I've always
been a big, you know, country music guy. So I
went out to Nashville, got to go with Corey. You
gotta go check out his family and his his spot,
and um, gotta go to a Morgan Wallen concert while
I was out there. Um, got to go out to Miami.
We met with a couple of guys out of Miami.
We gotta throw, gotta go hang out when we were
out there. Yep. Then we made it down to Scottsdale. Um,

(09:15):
Elijah Moore met me out there. Um, you know you,
I think was spending most of him his off season there.
But then you know, we had DJ and Mims and Jeff.
They kind of flew in from Texas for the weekend
and we had everyone there and so, um, I think
the off the field stuff of just going to the house,
hanging out at the pool with those guys, going golfing was,
you know, probably more important than the actual throwing, you know,

(09:36):
because we get that stuff. You know, have a favorite
course and we went to a True North which was
a nice one. We went and played in the Steve
Young Classic, a golf tournament out there. So yeah, always fun.
I gotta get I gotta ask you about go way
back in time a little bit, because now you're this
NFL quarterback. But when all this stuff started, I'm talking
high school going into college. You've got your youngest brother

(09:59):
going through all that and he's a QB. You got
two linebackers sandwiched in between you. But now you've got
the young stud quarterback and you've done all that. You've
been there, you've lived at any advice for him anything?
Are you reading his college letters to like what's going
on there? Right? Well? I think the biggest thing that
I learned, you know, I was a three starry crew
and I didn't have all the offers in the world,
and I see how my situation played out. And you know,

(10:21):
when you're picking a school, it's like, what's the best
situation for me to play? You know a lot of
people say, what's that the biggest best team I can
go to? You know, And I look at the guys
that did that in my class, and I was I
wasn't up there with the top ranked guys. But I
go and I started as a freshman at by U,
and I just got filmed and I got to experience things,
and all of a sudden, three years later, you know,
I've played more snaps than any of those guys. And

(10:41):
it's like, I had that chance to go the NFL,
and you look at our QB room, it's playing that's
a bigger deal than you know, going to the biggest,
best team. And so I'm trying to help him through
that process of understanding that I love it. And then
did you tell him anything about bulking up when you
get to the league. What's the deal? You gotta Jet Blue?
You got bow flex too, what's the deal, what's the
new muscles all about? Well, a big focus for me

(11:02):
was just I want to be able to keep that
weight on through the season. I feel like it's, uh,
it's a big deal to be able to to play
in these seventeen week seasons, and you know, you lose
weight as the season goes on. So I fed. I
hired somebody to help me, just with the nutrition standpoint
of saying, you know, hey, you need to eat it
this time and this time and this time, and it's
not going to be fancy meals, but it's a it's chicken,

(11:22):
rice and broccoli, and you need this much of it,
and you need to eat it this time just to
keep it convenient. And you know, January April, I really
didn't put much weight on. I think I came in
around two a weight, you know, two or seven, but
I was lifting hard, you know. And so when I
got out here, I hired that person to to be
with me for the two months, and I think after
a month I gained almost like twelve pounds. Okay, so

(11:43):
what's optimal? What do you want to start? So I'm
right around like to one, and my goal is I
want to be a dry to twenty five. You get
to twenty five and then right before summer, I'm gonna
I'm gonna lose a couple right, try and cut down,
keep the protein high. You know, I do want to
be leaner than I am, and so the goal us
I think I want to play around right around to
eighteen right, this is the way to do it. They

(12:05):
don't push those things too far for me. So I'm
still over here too. Thank you. Well, Zack's here. You
know we wanted the QB for a long time. You
gotta both again. No, I don't need that in my
life anymore. But how is it? So you know you
obviously you've talked I think at nauseam on the experience
of getting drafted to New York and everything. But now

(12:27):
again the whole theme of second year. You've been in
New York City? Like you have you embraced? Like what
have you done to embrace the city? And like is
it food? Is it? You know, just um going to
like parks and or seeing the sites, like you know,
going up one World Trade and seeing the top and everything.
Like what's your take on the city and how do

(12:48):
you how do you enjoy it? Right, every time I've visited,
I have a greater love for the city. You know,
there's there's so much to do. You know, I'm not
a party er guy. I didn't grow up you know,
drinking and partying and going out. But it's like you
don't need to do that anyway neither, you know. Right.
So so we go to the city and and there's
you'll never run out of a list of places to
go and get dinner with the boys or you know,

(13:08):
parks or sites to go see or things to do.
Like there's just always so much going on, and um,
you know, we're really starting to have a good time
of just enjoying that and then in the games, and
then the people, right the people the games, you know,
one of my favorite things that is just enjoying all
the different sporting events. You know, I've never been a
baseball guy growing up, but going to a Mets game
was a lot of fun. I got to meet a
couple of the players. Uh you know, they had a
little walk off home run at the at the end

(13:30):
of the game to end place goes nuts. So you know,
I want to I want to be able to experiences,
you know, all that stuff as much as I can do.
You think it's your time here because right now you
seem to be accepting all teams teams right right, I
know what this is going. Some of us have elected
to you know, be die hards in different areas again

(13:51):
to each other own. But do you think that it's
gonna change as you go through, Like all of a sudden,
you're gonna be like, you know what, I Mets only
I stink I'm out or you know, I'm NIX all
the way. You know, Rangers Islanders. Do you think it's tough?
I feel like I gotta I feel like I gotta
learn more, maybe about the culture of each team, right, No,
I want, I don't. I don't there it was a

(14:13):
playoff game, um for the Rangers a couple of years back,
banging on the glass and there's a couple of pictures
me really getting after the guys in front. And so
I just at that point I accepted my fate that
I was like, you know what, I'm a Rangers fan, um,
and you just lost all the Devils fans. There's not
too many of those, See I thought that last year
at the Islanders game, you know, they took care of us.

(14:35):
We got like all the guys out. There's absolute blasts
and playoffs come around and the Rangers are in there
this time, and it's like, you know, you just want
those guys to do well, so it's it's hard to
pick one. Whoever, whoever's doing well, you want them to
do well. This is true, But I will say it's
much easier to get to a Rangers game than it
is to an Islanders. Yeah, you fell into Broadway. See,
we gotta get you to a Broadway ship. So that's
so that's I'm planning to go to the Book of

(14:57):
Mormon here soon. I hear. That's a good one. That's
right up right up my alley. I gotta see in
high school musical like those are no. But I think
what we did is we've taken some of the guys.
And the key is you gotta take their wife or
significant other. Okay, just can't be the guys, because then no, no, no,
you take all the guys plus plus. Can't just be
the guys. It's got to be the plus. Okay. All

(15:19):
I'm saying is the gals, okay, stick with meals really
appreciated it. And then they're like, sure, you want to
go have a boy's night with Mark in the city.
He took us to that one Broadway like go have
a ball. Gives you a little path that's a little
secret that. I don't think too many people know Mark was.
I think it was your second year, the third year

(15:40):
Mother's Day. He sent flowers to all the moms and
that huge. I gotta take note of that. We'll bring
that one back. That was a big one. These wives
who have children, and like he's thinking of me, Like
I really appreciate that that was and that got us
a free night out. You know, it's worth it. It's

(16:03):
worth arrangement, like it's all, yeah, you got that. It
was easy Jet Blue. We gotta ask him about yes,
oh so flights. That was my gift to them in
one year. Uh so I took it. He gave us. Um,
he gave us the travel vouchers, and I went to Cabo.
It was my first time ever going to Cabo. And

(16:23):
now that has become one of our happy places. Um
all because of a beautiful was a great spot. Have
any of the guys taken your A couple of them
have taken it. Um. I'm not sure where exactly. McDermott
reached out to me today. He was trying to go
to Europe or something like that. That I need a
little more, needs a little bit more. I need an upgrade.
Can get right, It actually worked out. My uncle is

(16:45):
actually the founder of jet Blue. Come on, it took
me to go to the New York Jets to get
free flights for the guys. Really, you know, I never
got a free flight in my life. Uncle. I'll send
the flowers, you get the flights. Okay, how about that. Okay,
I'll take care of that. I'll throw some right. That's cool.
But it is like say, for the offensive line, speaking
as a former one, UM, it is a quarterback gift

(17:06):
to the offensive line. UM goes a million miles like that.
I don't think a lot of people ever processed because
there's so much that goes in on on the front side. UM,
to help you guys do what you guys do so
great and so that appreciation UM is always good. And
I know to take care of you, and we took
care of you too. We take you out and have fun,

(17:28):
make you pay. Line is a good group to hang
out with. They're good people, all right. So we always
end our interviews with a little this or that, UM,
and some are a little open ended. Two. So it's
whatever comes to your mind, quick hitting, don't think, just
spit it out first. One favorite type of pizza just cheese,

(17:49):
plain cheese. Favorite vacation place probably let's go on going there. Okay,
makes you out there. Do you have a favorite hotel
or do you rent a house? I like the house
with the resort inclusive kind of stuff. Is the residences?

(18:16):
What's that in Spanish? Guys? It's good. See you're getting better.
Thank you? Um. Favorite music artists Chris Brown, Chris Brown. Okay,
if you're gonna watch a movie horror or comedy, comedy,
thank you. You know if you brought yours, we wouldn't
have to do this. Uh, let's see here. Would you
rather see the future or change the past? See the

(18:40):
future future? I don't know. I think I want to
change the past because then that changes my future? Whatever? Did?
I don't know if i'd want to change my past
right now? Deep thinker over here, relaxed. He's not your
favorite Burrow? Um? Manhattan? Yeah? Probably Manhat Okay, i'd say,

(19:04):
all right, um, so we kind of touched on this
a little bit, but maybe your answer will differ. Would
you rather do a Broadway show or go to a
movie theater? Out here? I'd say Broadway show. If I
wasn't here, I probably wouldn't say that probably not. Okay,
Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty Empire State Building. Okay,
all right, we're gonna finish with their last one taxi

(19:26):
or uber uber uber. You don't want to get in
the yellows. I don't know. I think I've ever been
in the taxi before generation. I guess that's true. They
still have taxes. Think about this. Your kids probably won't
even drive. No, that's wild. Yeah, let that blow your mind.
This is awesome. We wanted this for a long time.
Thank you appreciate it. It was awesome. That was good

(19:48):
luck to Sear, stay healthy body, Yes, sir, Now he
can have his hot dogs and he'll be much happy.
Got a lot of him to finish right there. Yeah,
you got a lot of works to take about thirty
seconds the finale of all finales The Exchange podcast on
season one in the books. We'll keep it like Seinfeld,
the show about nothing about hot dogs, football helmets. We
had Zack Wilson. We got the QB. I said it

(20:08):
episode one. I wanted him bad we got And he's
got a little humor side to him. That was good.
Keep a little prank there, Zachary, a little prank to
an old guy. I like it. What else? Ring of
honor for Nick? That is awesome. It's a big finale.
I'm gonna come in just to throw football ta your
big fat face in here. What else? Let's see. I

(20:31):
gotta tell you, I think my favorite guest, Hey, I mean,
how do you think? But everybody brought something? Everyone brought something.
But and I've talked to Joe plenty of times, Like
we've had a lot of conversations. But the fact of
like actually interviewing in a relatively professional setting still got it. Oh,
he's got it. He's never lost it and never lost it. Uh,

(20:54):
Ralph Macchio, I'm pretty sure he said we could be
in the next karad of Kit And there's at least
three more we need to follow it back up with that.
Let's keep that relationship. Rachel said she was going to
make a dinner for us. I think, right, when is
that happening? I'm fired up for that. She spends a
lot of time in Italy, so maybe she flies out there.
I guess we take the Jet Blue flights from Zack
because he's gonna thank us for being on our show.

(21:16):
That's probably true that the US there, founder of Jet
Blue yeah, we gotta call that guy that we do.
Actually we call and be like, hey, we know Zack.
That's right, which great. We've watched two O T A s.
They look good. We know who can sling it. Uh, yeah,

(21:36):
they're slinging it. Um flying around. My man still got it,
and I still got it. The oldest still got it
flying around. I like what we're doing too. You know,
they're making it more mental, um, which I think is good. UM.
And so I'm excited about where we're heading. UM. And
I'm excited about this podcast two season two. I'm gonna

(22:01):
I'm gonna go like Entourage Andrew Dice Clay and I'll
already be asking for a raise, um, having finished season
one and I want to raise. Well, I'll be back
next year. I might not have as a partner. We'll
get fake Nick come in. But no, this was awesome.
It was really neat, you know it was. It was
great being able to chat with people and obviously spend

(22:23):
time with yourself. And uh, I'll be a big guy.
Thank you guys so much for listening watching UM. This
has been a blast, and I hope we continue on UM.
Today's episode was amazing for me, not only getting the
quarterback and chat with Mark. But personally, um, you know,
the ring of honors, Uh, pretty awesome. And I got surprised. Um,

(22:45):
it wasn't expecting it. Uh caught me off guard. But
the kids were supposed to be in school, so they
threw me off even more. When I saw them coming in,
I was like, who died? Um, And so it was
that's pretty special, and that's pretty awesome that I got
shared with you. That was kind of cool. Thrilled to
share that with you. You just r of it and
so much more. UM, proud of you, buddy, as a
player and a dad and just a great role model.

(23:07):
So thank you again for tuning in, like share, subscribe,
listen to us on Apple podcasts or wherever you get
your podcasts. That's the exchange, one last time. We'll see
you next year. Thank you all.

Join me on this podcast as I navigate the murky waters of human behavior, current events, and personal anecdotes through in-depth interviews with incredible people—all served with a generous helping of sarcasm and satire. After years as a forensic and clinical psychologist, I offer a unique interview style and a low tolerance for bullshit, quickly steering conversations toward depth and darkness. I honor the seriousness while also appreciating wit. I’m your guide through the twisted labyrinth of the human psyche, armed with dark humor and biting wit.
