Speaker 1 (00:10):
Another day, another development in the most unique quarterback competition
in recent memory, and now the door could be opened
for a different rookie to shine on Saturday. Ran Baldinger
was at today's joint practice against the Eagles. He'll be
here tonight to break down what he's seeing from Dylan,
Gabriel and Moore. Two of the preseason almost upon us.
(00:31):
So who else could make a name for themselves? It
won't be JJ McCarthy. He's not playing this week, but
we will get you ready for all the key matchups
as the countdown of the regular season continues.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
The Broncos have high hopes for twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Five and Zach Allen has all about one hundred million
reasons to help make that happen.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
So what are his.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Expectations in the rugged AFC West.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
We will ask him that and a whole lot more.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Welcome inside with the Insiders presented by SATVA alongside Jenny
Batista and Mike Garafalo.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I am Tom Peliserro.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Three weeks from tonight, the NFL regular season kicks off
with the Cowboys and Eagles. Exactly twenty four hours from
right now, Week two of the preseason kicks off, and
one thing that we know is we are not going
to get another installment of the Chador Sanders Show. That
is where we begin tonight with the Brown Sanders suffering
(01:26):
an oblique injury in practice on Wednesday, coming on the
heels of a rather impressive first go last week against Carolina,
and it may be a bit before we see him
back on the field, according to his coach Kevin Stefanski.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah, felt it early, I think, warming up, and then
felt it throughout individuals who took a look at it.
You know, if it's a right guard, you can play
through that. When it's a quarterback, you kind of need
that muscle to throw. So unfortunately, I'm gonna put him
down for a little bit here. What we'll treat it
day to day and see how he responds. But I
want to be smart because he's a thrower, so you
(02:01):
can't you can't push that thing. We'll work through all
those things.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Obviously.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
You know Snoop knows exactly what to do, how to
do it, so is ready to roll. We'll see who
else is available, Mary kay, but got to get through
today before I know that.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
That is Tyler Snoop Huntley, who was signed after Kenny
Pickett suffer to hamstring injury than Dylan Gabriel suffered to hamstring.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Now Chador has got the oblique and the previous arm
sore on is Joe Flacco.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
He's forty. He doesn't really need an injury. Brian Baldinger
was at that joint practice today. You got a missmash
of different quarterbacks here, Baldy, it seems to change by
the second. What have you seen from that group and
overall in that practice.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Well, it's like the Joe Flacco show out there. You know,
he's got his five kids, he's got his wife out there,
so he's got the family. But he's taken a lot
of reps, probably two thirds of the reps over the
last two days against the Eagles, and he said he
needed to work, so he got to work. Dylan Gabriel
came in, made some fine throws in a red zone.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
He was the one that was substituting with them.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
But there's probably the two guys going to see for
the majority of the game Saturday night. On the other side,
you know, they worked two fields the whole day, so
you know, offense defense over here, Brown's over here, and
so I thought the Brown's defense especially in the red zone.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Really showed up.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
I thought they gave Jalen Hurt some problems the way
that they defended him, making him make some perfect throws,
which was hard to do against that front led by
Miles Garrett, who had a pretty good afternoon out there, so,
you know, and then you saw the Eagles defense, really
the whole defense out there, Jihad Campbell, Zach Vaughn, Jalen Carter,
(03:35):
Jordan Davis. They were all out there in force today
watching that defense go to work. They'll probably get a
great deal of action on Saturday night. And of course
you can't, you know, look at the Browns defense and
not look at Jim Schwartz who helped the Eagles defense
win their first Super Bowl Super Bowl fifty two eight
years ago. So Schwartze's always got a presidence out there,
(03:56):
you know. It kind of goes to him on his defense.
So I thought it was a really good day, no fights,
great weather, good fields.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
They probably had a good lunch afterwards for all I know.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
Yeah, ritas, all the ritas you can eat if you
were allowed inside Baldy. They got that for you. The
rookies carry it for the veterans at the end of practice.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
It's great.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
Yeah, Look, Shador Sanders not being able to play in
this game not the worst thing, right, I mean, I
know he's disappointed, he's competitor, he wants to be Outlaws,
but not the worst thing, because he already puts some
good tape out there with his performance in the preseason opener.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
We have talked about this.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
The competition was between him and Dylan Gabriel really for
that third spot. It seemed like, I mean, maybe potentially
for the second spot, but for the third spot. Who's
going to stay on the roster versus who could potentially
be sneaked.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Through waivers and onto the practice squad.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
The fact that that tape is out there now helps
his case, right, It helps that the other teams will
be like, hey, you want to wave him, We're gonna
take so helps his case to be on the final
roster there. Yeah, gonna fight hard to get back out
there and get back on the playing field sometime in
the preseason here to see if you can get some work.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
In at the end.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
But that oblique Kevin Sevanski calling a day to day duty.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
We'll see when he can get back.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
Yeah, about the only thing we know for certain about
the Browns is that Joe Flacco is going to be
the starter Week one of the regular season. He's been
taking all of the first team reps. As Baldi pointed out,
he's been taking a lot of reps because there's been
injuries to practically everybody else. I think even when the
training camp started, maybe only Kenny Pickett would have had
(05:31):
a real chance to beat out Joe Flackow. And even
then I'm not sure about that. But Kenny Pickett has
missed so much practice time. He has still not been
in eleven on eleven since suffering that hamstring injury very
early in training camp, so he's been out of the process.
And now they're hoping that Dylan Gabriel can start the
(05:51):
preseason game on Saturday night. We have to see how
his hamstring responds after today's practice, but that is the
hope that he will get the start, and then at
least they we'll get to get a good long look
at the other rookie quarterback while Shagor is on the bench.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Many reasons to roll with a veteran quarterback out of
the gate, including the rugged early stretch on the Browns schedule,
which all begins in week one against the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Baldy. More from you coming in just a little bit.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
We also had news today regarding the Browns second round
draft pick Quinn Shawn Judkins. Prosecutors in Florida declined to
file a formal misdemeanor battery charge against Judkins, who was
arrested last month for alleged battery of a woman. League
conducts its own review into the matter that is ongoing meeting.
Judkins ultimately still could face league discipline a.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Second round draft pick.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Judkins is the only twenty twenty five pick who remains unsigned.
Speaker 6 (06:45):
Mike in the team that they practiced against the Browns.
That is a J Brown quote working through some things.
That's how Nick Sirianni phrased it when he was asked
why Brown who had a hamstring injury, then he was
out of or in practice again and then out the
last couple of days.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Asked if he had a setback.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
Now he's working through some things, and siriani did to
go into great detail when it comes to injury. So
I wouldn't get too worked up about this. The fact
that he wouldn't answer it directly. I don't sense any
great concern. I just sense that it's a guy that
they want to make sure that they have right heading
into the season. He's got three weeks. He just said
it Tom earlier in the show. He got three weeks
to get right. I saw him when I was at
the practice. He was moving around on the sideline and
(07:27):
certainly engaged. So aj Brown back to work at some
point in their future. It feels like a hope for
the Eagles at this point.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Matthew Stafford's also working through some things, still dealing with
an aggravated disc in his back. Was supposed to be
practicing this week. It did not happen. Sean McVay said
that Stafford will go through another Saturday workout to test
it out. Hope his body responds a little bit better.
McVey adding quote, we're trying to get our hands around
this as well. So I don't really have much more
(07:55):
information other than think we're trying some different things that
are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him
back out on the field. Let's bring in our Omar
Ouiz as well as Mark ross Omar. You were at
that Rams practice today. You got to look at Jimmy
Garoppolo's that's embedded out there who are the quarterbacks right now?
For La, what did you see and what do you
(08:15):
make of where we stand right now surrounding an injury
with Stafford that certainly has continued to be dealt with
longer than the team initially expected.
Speaker 8 (08:23):
Yeah, story that won't go away, Tom. And the quote
that you gave from Sean McVay about trying to get
their hands around it is in response to a question
that he was asked, is it something that's related to
functionality or pain tolerance? And that's what Shane Sean McVay
was talking about with trying to get their hands around it.
This is an interesting dynamic that the Rams are working
through because this is Matthew Stafford, a legendary tough guy
(08:46):
and from the quarterback position, we've seen it time and
time again from his early days in Detroit all the
way through the Super Bowl Championship season for the Rams
to the current day. He is as tough as it gets,
knows his body, knows how to prepare, and they are
confident that they can plug and play. Matthew Stafford in
on game week knows what he has to do to
get his body right to play on Sundays. But they
(09:07):
also know that this is a super Bowl caliber type
of team with Matthew Stafford playing at an elite level,
and I think starting to have that acknowledgment that yes,
they want to be playing these major important games in January,
potentially in February with Matthew Stafford there, so they're confident
they could win games. This is an elite roster they
(09:27):
feel around the quarterback position, So whether it's Jimmy Garoppolo
at the Helm Week one against Houston or Matthew Stafford,
they're still confident on what they can accomplish.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Big picture for this season, Yeah, I love.
Speaker 9 (09:39):
The Rams chances with a healthy Matthew Stafford. But looking
at this from the outside, this is scary. A thirty
seven year old player with a back injury when we.
Speaker 10 (09:49):
Always had players the trainers, knee, a shouldered ankle.
Speaker 9 (09:52):
That's pretty cut and dry about Okay, it's going to
be X amount of time we need to do this,
manage it, bax and next we're always super trick and
very difficult to deal with, even with younger players. So
now you have a Matthew Stafford who's thirty seven years old. Again,
being around older players, they don't get healthier So this
could linger omar.
Speaker 10 (10:11):
As you mentioned, there is it pain? Is it functionality?
Speaker 9 (10:14):
And that's probably something they don't even one hundred percent
know because of the difficulty in evaluating it back and
I know you said, like, hey, definitely Matthew Stafford knows
how to deal off the field with the rets, the practice,
the film. But then even once he gets on the field,
how much of it will be the Matthew Stafford Pro
Bowl level Matthew Stafford, Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford that
(10:37):
will see or he's really protecting himself protecting himself once
he gets in a game. So this could be something
that seriously mark for the Rams because they do have
a Super Bowl aspiration of the Super Bowl roster with
a healthy Matthew Stafford, but a thirty seven year old
with a.
Speaker 8 (10:51):
Back Tom and Tom I think I think that raised
eyebrows this week because Sean McVay had been so deliberate
in not giving a timeline for me Matthew Stafford's health
by saying it's week to week and then Saturday having
that workout that you mentioned, and then it not responding
him not practicing as he was supposed to this week. Obviously,
raise a little more eyebrows and obviously something that will
(11:11):
continue to pay close attention.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
To Omar and Mark. Thank you very much, Judy. Well.
Speaker 7 (11:20):
One quarterback we are going to see this week, Chargers
quarterback Justin Herbert. He is going to make his preseason
debut Saturday against Rams. This is actually his career preseason debut.
He has never played in the preseason before. He's probably
only going to get about eight plays with the starters.
It was actually Herbert's idea to play. He went to
Jim Harbaugh asked if he could, said he wanted to
(11:41):
see a pass rush. Herbert said the original plan was
actually for him to play last week against the Saints,
but everything changed when Rashaun Slater had the injury that
forced the shuffle at tackle, so instead Justin Herbert this
week against the Ramps.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
Mike Trevor Lawrence think he was indicating he thinks he's
going to play.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
They haven't made that official. There, Yeah, there it is, says.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
He's expecting to play there on Sunday one pm Eastern
on NFL Network. Read the whole bottom third there, Mike
Trevor larns mean while saying that he and his new
coach Liam Cohen finally reading on that same page.
Speaker 11 (12:19):
He's very i'd say thorough too, just with the details
of every play, of what he's thinking, the way he
communicates with me on the sideline from play to play,
between series and practice, and he does a great job
of talking to me and seeing what I'm seeing. And
I think we're really starting to get on the same
page as far as I'm thinking, how he's thinking in
certain concepts and playing faster, and you know that's going
to be something that just continues to grow as we
(12:41):
played more together and obviously as we get in the
season and start playing these real games. But it's been
awesome having him as our coach and just the teaching
he's been able to do for our group, not just
the quarterbacks, but the whole offense, you know, the offensive line,
the running backs, to the white outs. He's he's done
a great job of just teaching us all. A lot.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
A lot of joint pre is around the NFL this week.
One that is not going to be happening next week,
the Commanders and Ravens canceling their joint practice. A statement
for Baltimore saying, in part, recognizing the logistical challenges with
our team's previous game schedule on different days and the
added straight on players heading to the short week, The
Ravens and Commanders mutually agreed to no longer hold a
(13:20):
joint practice next week.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Mike, what more do we know?
Speaker 6 (13:25):
Yeah, it's a mutual decision here by both teams. Dan
Quinn is saying that he's disappointed, but they realize that
it's a short week for them with the Monday night
game coming up against the Bengals, so they want to
make sure that these guys get took closer to Week
one in the best possible shapes of the two sides
of the two coaches talked about it. So this is off,
but I would say still some important work for the
(13:45):
Commanders to get before the regular season. Dan Quinn quote
hated the score of the first matchup of the preseason
excuse me, with the New England Patriots. So this is
a team that's hearing a lot of stuff about. You know,
is there a drop off for that guy and for
the rest of the roster, right, and maybe the schedule
is a little bit tougher than what they faced in
your one.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Quinn is aware of that stuff.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
So this is an important game for them coming up
here against the Bengals in a couple of days. He
indicated that the starters, or at least they select group
of starters, is going to play in this game. I
think it's an important game for Washington.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
I think Quinn.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
Realizes that forget the score itself, but he wants to
see a better performance top to bottom from these commanders.
Speaker 7 (14:25):
You it does feel like there are just a few
more issues swirling around this team right now at this
time this season than there was at this time last season. Obviously,
Terry mccluurin is the headliner there, still not practicing. He's around,
he's been talking to people, but not participating in practice,
(14:46):
still looking for a contract extension, and of course you've
seen the issues on the field in the preseason game.
It was not a very good performance. I think all
of this has a spotlight on it because the expectation
this season are so much higher. Last year felt like
a glide path. Everything was sort of a wonderful surprise.
(15:06):
Jaden Daniels, of course, was spectacular. Well, that only heightened
the expectations for this team, and so all of these
little speed bumps that have developed along the way and
maybe they are just little speed bumps, but they are
highlighted because everybody's expecting so much more from this team.
We will see how they get resolved, but right now,
(15:26):
a few bumps along the way for the Commanders.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
Another unresolved situation involving a top wide receiver, Rashi Rice,
now expected you have is disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, September thirty,
which would mean that, barring a settlement sometime in the
next six weeks here, Rice would be eligible to play
the first three games with the Chiefs before any potential
suspension were to take hold.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Now, the league in the.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Union had had discussions, they were not able to come
to an agreement on the length of a suspension. The league,
from my understanding, wanted an extended suspension. The Union wanted
little to no games missed. So Judge Sue L. Robinson,
who previously heard the Deshaun Watson case several years ago,
is going to be the arbitrator who hears this one.
(16:13):
The NFL said in the statement on Rashid, we have
been closely monitoring all developments of the matter, which remains
under review. Coming up here on the Insiders, cam Moore
got off to a strong start let touchdown drive in
his preseason debut had some rather surprising comments. But where
that Tennessee offense is at, We will play that for
(16:34):
you and preview this week's preseason game against the Falcons,
and will also talk next to that guy number ninety nine,
Zach Allen. He makes plays, he's got a new contract
about one hundred million dollars, and he's hoping those things
are going to combine together for really great twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Zach Allen with us. Next, it's the Insiders presented by SATPA.
Speaker 10 (17:00):
And Zach for the balls.
Speaker 12 (17:02):
Three.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
The big motor of Zach Allen, Sam Stall, My goodness,
that is Zach Allen.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
There. He was sacked by Zack Allen.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
That pressure came from the middle of it was a
big Zach.
Speaker 10 (17:12):
Allen gat pressure there by Zach Allen.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
The broken defense.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
I love it, you know. Sean Payton recently said about
Zach Allen, He's all the things you're looking for. And
this chart tells you exactly what Sean Payton was talking about.
Look at that twenty twenty four season eight and a half.
Zack second among defensive tackles in the entire NFL led
(17:37):
the entire NFL in quarterback hits, first in quarterback pressures
among defensive tackles, and now to celebrate all of that,
Zach Allen joins The Insider. Zach, thank you so much.
And of course, your reward for having a season like
that is you got the big contract contract extension about
two weeks ago. I know you've been in camp, but
(17:58):
have you had time to even pros and sort of
reflect on your career paths to where you just got
two weeks ago.
Speaker 12 (18:06):
Yeah, No, it's it's been kind of crazy.
Speaker 13 (18:08):
Yeah, I guess it totally hasn't hit me yet, but no,
it's definitely been kind of a crazy journey, you know,
these past six and a half seven years. So just
really blessed and happy to stay in Denver for the
next four years. And yeah, you know, maybe I don't know,
we'll see when it does hit, but it's been Uh,
(18:28):
we're just right now doing the training grem training camp
grind right now, Zach.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
I'm not the biggest numbers guy because I don't think
they always tell the story, but I can't find anybody
at your position that had forty quarterback hits in the season.
So I guess my question is this is every one
of those hits? Do they all feel the same to you?
Does it give you the same amount of pleasure? Does
one one of the forty hits? Is it one better
(18:56):
than the other depending on who you hit? Or are
they all the same when you set a quarterback?
Speaker 12 (19:01):
Yeah, I mean they all feel great.
Speaker 13 (19:03):
I definitely, you know, when they turned the sacks, it
definitely feels a little extra sweeter. But now, I mean
it's we have a great group here, and yeah, it
definitely helps me just kind of make my job easier.
And now, honestly, it's it's been a blast play in
here and playing with these guys, and you know, just
continuing to keep the group together this year and see
(19:25):
if we can kind of replicate it, and you know,
all of us have special seasons.
Speaker 7 (19:32):
You recently said that you feel like you are way
ahead of where you were at this time last year
in terms of your preparation, which is kind of unbelievable
considering that you had like career highs and everything, and
you played almost ninety percent of all the defensive snaps.
So where do you think you can already see improvements
in your game for when the regular season starts.
Speaker 13 (19:54):
Yeah, no, I don't want to give away too many series,
but it's been uh no, it's been a really great
camp I think. I mean, Baldy definitely knows from the
breakdowns and everything. I kind of did this reverse stance,
kind of broke that out last year, and you know,
I didn't figure that out until you know, basically the
second preseason game maybe after that. So the fact that
(20:16):
you know able to hit the ground running with that,
hit the ground running with the guys again, and you know,
just having a full off season to you know, obviously
get bigger, faster, stronger, and you know, kind of watch
the film and reassess, see guys around the league what
they were doing that worked.
Speaker 12 (20:31):
It's been great.
Speaker 13 (20:31):
So I'm definitely really excited to just get to Week
one and play the Titans.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Zach, A couple of things here. One, you came into
this league with Vance Joseph, you went to Denver kind
of with you sort of are attached at the hip
since you've been in this business. And when I watched
your defense last year without studying all the numbers, it
looked like you played as much reduced front, covering up
all five with five man rushes as anybody in this
business which kind of allows you guys to go one
(20:59):
on one quite a bit. You DJ, John, FRANKL. Meyers, Benito,
the whole group. Like, how much of advantage is that
that Vans get you in those kinds of fronts.
Speaker 13 (21:09):
Yeah, no, I mean, anytime you can get a one
on one in this league, that's all you can ask for.
And the fact that you know, he realizes, you know,
how much we value that and how much pride we
take in winning those is all you can ask for.
Speaker 12 (21:21):
And it's been terrific.
Speaker 13 (21:22):
And you know, there's a reason why I followed him
to Denver, and it's because I obviously, you know, see
eye to eye with the way that you know he
calls and believes in defense, and it's it's been awesome.
And you know, it definitely is a race to the
quarterback in our room. Uh So it's it's been a
lot of fun. But yeah, definitely. Uh, you know, anytime
you get a one one this league, it's it's it's
(21:43):
a mandatory to win it.
Speaker 7 (21:47):
Sean Payton has said repeatedly and adamantly that you guys
are Super Bowl contenders and he wants you guys thinking
about that. He wants you to feel that among the players.
How do you feel about that? Does it put more
pressure on you, more anticipation, how do you absorb that?
Speaker 13 (22:04):
Yeah, No, I think it's you know, it's obviously great
to have expectations like that. And the cool thing with
our group is we're so processed driven. So for us,
it's you know, what's the goal of the day, What's
what's the emphasis of the day. And for us, you know,
we really are focused on just taking it brick by brick,
step by step, getting better every single day. So you know,
(22:24):
it's a it's a young room, but it's a mature
group and it's uh, if there really is a special
you know team to be a part of, and you know, again.
Speaker 12 (22:32):
It's uh, we'll see how it all plays out.
Speaker 4 (22:36):
Zach. I.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
I put a tweet out there last year, a breakdown
out there, because it irritated me that you didn't get
the attention that you deserved.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
And so I was just like, this stuff speaks for itself.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
And you lead the league in sacks and your defense
is feared, and you're in the playoffs with the rookie quarterback, like,
you know, I appreciate you getting back to me on that.
Zach I guess one of the questions I have since
Judy referenced Sean Payton is I've known Sean a long
time and he just has this ability to irritate you,
just to get underneath your skin. Does he stay away
(23:13):
from the defensive lines act or does he just keep
it for the offense because he's an equal opportunity irritant
to me.
Speaker 13 (23:21):
Now, he's been good to us, he knows, I guess,
kind of just leave us to do our thing and
he'll reap the rewards. So he's been good to us.
Not a lot of trash talk, but it's no honestly,
like every day. You know, obviously with him, it starts
with him, but the whole team, I mean, it's a
competitive group and we really take a lot of pride
in what we do. And so any team periods nine
(23:44):
on seven, you know, any of it one on one
is whatever it is. It's it's there's trash talking going on,
and you know, coaches are not afraid to get involved
in it either. It's a whole organization thing. But you
want guys with that fire. You know, we don't believe
that there's dog days of camp. It's every day is
a day.
Speaker 12 (24:00):
To get better. So it's it's been a lot of fun,
all right.
Speaker 7 (24:06):
Last one for us, Zach. On Saturday night on the
NFL Network, as it happens, you will play the Arizona Cardinals,
your former team. I know you just had a joint
practice with them too. How does that feel to you?
Since you've come so far and your team is so
very good this year, how does it feel to face
your former team?
Speaker 12 (24:26):
Yeah, it's been great.
Speaker 13 (24:27):
You know, obviously still have a lot of good friends there, players, staff, everything,
So anytime you know, you can have an extended period
of time, like a joint practice to see them, it's, uh,
it's a really cool experience because you know, most game
days it's you know, you're lucky if you get five
minutes with the guys. So today was really cool, and
you know, obviously wish them the best, and you know,
(24:48):
I think they got a hell of a group, so
it'll be uh, I still follow them, you know, still
keep up with the guys. Got you know, friends for
life on that team, so it'll be really cool to
see kind of how they do this year.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
Zach, thank you so much for joining us. Congratulations again
on the contract and lots of luck. This season.
Speaker 12 (25:09):
Thank you so much, guys.
Speaker 6 (25:12):
The NFL preseason rolls home with seven live games on
NFL Network in Week two. A new era is taking
shape with rookie classes looking to show out. Don't miss
your chance to catch some of the biggest names during
Week two of the NFL preseason live on NFL Network.
Blackout restrictions apply also streaming with NFL Plus subscription required
(25:32):
for NFL Plus.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
The Browns one of those teams looking.
Speaker 6 (25:36):
To show out some of the young guys that is
in Week two, this time Dylan Gabriel with Shidora Sanders
on the side, looking to make a statement here as
he battles for with Sanders and Picket for that role
which we expect to be behind Joe flaccol. There is
Gabriel in the joint practice with the Eagles in Philadelphia
that happened the last two days. Steve Weis's joining me
(25:57):
and Mark Ross here. Mark, a lot of injuries with
the with the Browns. How do you suit this one
or sort this one out? I should say, with all
these guys getting hurt in and out and all that stuff.
Speaker 10 (26:07):
Yeah, it's very odd situation.
Speaker 9 (26:09):
I'll bit with Eli Manning and Donva McNabb for like
eighteen years of my career. Those guys just never even
missed practice in all those years.
Speaker 10 (26:16):
And here's the Browns, like three quarterbacks. These guys are
just just taking turns being out of practice.
Speaker 9 (26:21):
I was at the Browns last Monday and shored it
in practice the day before because of arm soreness. And
then the day when we got there, that's when dyl
Gabriel got hurt and Kenny Pickett was already hurt as well.
So maybe something a little different in their training efforts.
You think four dudes, the four dudes splitting all these reps,
now five with snoop, they'd be more fresh.
Speaker 10 (26:41):
But look, whoever emerges this is Joe Flacco's job.
Speaker 9 (26:43):
Of course, Joe Flacco can just go play without any
practice or rep time. It's really about those other guys
who can stay on the field. And because durability is
a trait and a skill, so who can stay on
the field to actually prove themselves on a consistent basis
to merge as that quarterback. Let's say back number two,
because the two draft picks, you only have got a
third or fifth for out draft pick. In the way
(27:04):
Shador played there's other teams looking at him.
Speaker 10 (27:07):
Gabriel has his chances weekend to show it. We'll see.
But Joe flackos John to lose.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
He's out.
Speaker 10 (27:12):
The two guys got to stay on the field to
prove themselves.
Speaker 14 (27:14):
Well, Mark, let's go to Dylan Gabriel because you know
he's probably going to be starting in the Week two
preseason game, and this is his opportunity. Now we know
he practiced some against the Eagles and the joint practices
after coming back.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
To that hamstring injury.
Speaker 14 (27:27):
The reports are he was kind of up and down,
something you're not surprised about. One going up against the
Eagles and two after missing so much practice times kind
of getting things back together. But Shador Sanders, who he's
competing with, he's got game.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
Film right, he looked really good in Week one.
Speaker 14 (27:41):
This is Dylan Gabriel's opportunity to come show himself. He
probably isn't going going to be going against many frontline
players against the Philadelphia Eagles, so he's got to take
advantage of this. Because the Browns likely are not keeping
four quarterbacks on this roster. One may go on the
practice squad. Dylan Gabriel was the third round draft pick
Schador Sanders was the fifth. So Dylan Gabriel get missing
(28:01):
time with that Hampton injury is one thing. Now he's healthier, er, er, er,
not necessarily healthy, but it's got to get there and
show something on Saturday against the Eagles if he wants
to show that he's involved in this race at all.
Speaker 6 (28:14):
Yeah, he's had some impressive moments during training camp, in practice,
even dating back to the spring. This is this chance
to make that statement in a live game.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
When he's healthy. How many errors was it against? There
was three? Three?
Speaker 6 (28:28):
Here three hears good stuff, Tom, take it away, Fikey.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
The Patriots also wrapped up two days of joint practice
today in Egan, Minnesota, and that guy number nine was
the star of practice. Both what I saw with my
own eyes live as well as what everyone told me
was this was a perfect example of what they've seen
when JJ McCarthy is in command of the offense. He
led a two minute drill down the field late in
(28:55):
practice ones versus ones, hit Jordan Adison in the end
zone for a touchdown. Also a nice hook up with
TJ Hawkinson earlier in practice in the end zone. If
you were talking about where these twenty twenty five Minnesota
Vikings can go.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
JJ McCarthy is certainly a huge part of it. As
welcome Baldi back to the conversation.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
You were there a week or so ago, Baldi, what
do you make of this Vikings team as well as
what we were seeing on the rside with the Patriots.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
You're right, Tom, I was there last Wednesday in Eagan, Minnesota.
Spent the day out there, talked to coach Kevin O'Connell,
talked to a lot of the players. Look, they have
so many good things around the quarterback. I just went
back and watched JJ McCarthy's twelve snaps the other night
with his first team offensive line minus Christian Dearrassol, but
(29:40):
watching Donovan Jackson and Ryan Kelly, you know, and Will
Fries along with Brian O'Neill.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
That's a good group up front. The tight ends are souid.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
JJ Hockinson is healthy all year this year with Oliver,
and then defensively, they just added pieces to a defense
that was number two against running the league. Tom and
also tied for the league lead with takeaways and so
Brian Flores has got a masterful scheme. He's got the
players to play the scheme. They've got a lot of
(30:11):
depth out there, like we're all going to concentrate on
the quarterback and that's fine, but JJ McCarthy has to
know and I think he does, like this is far
far away from being a one man show. Like, yes,
he can elevate guys around him, but they're gonna be
really good if he just plays okay right now, they're
still gonna be in contention with.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
A lot of games.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
And that's been a big part of the emphasis from
what I've been told with JJ McCarthy, Hey, we don't
need you to be the superhero on every single snap.
They like that he's wired to try to make those plays,
but there's times he doesn't need to do it all himself.
Come a wide receiver notes too, justin Jefferson still not practicing,
but he was running around after practice catching balls from
one of the athletic traders. Everything I've heard with that hamstring,
(30:54):
he's going to be just fine. And as for Stefon Diggs,
the Patriots wide receiver, everyone I talk to there said
he's actually looked great in practice, and you could see
that fire that he's always had come out in practice.
He got a touchdown in one of the one on
one drills. He is certainly a big piece of what
they're hoping to do with New England in twenty twenty five.
(31:16):
A lot more to come on this edition of the Insiders,
thank you very much. Baldy, Rams and Saints also had
a joint practice today. Omar Rawis was in the building
for that. Still no Matthew Stafford. Omar that will be
here to break it down next.
Speaker 7 (31:41):
Cam Ward continuing to quietly go about his work as
the Titans starting quarterback. He is not in the headlines much,
but he has had some very good things to say
about his team already. Here is the first overall draft
pick on his offense.
Speaker 15 (31:57):
I think we honestly other Billy to be the Togen offense.
But also going it goes on every guy in that huddle,
including myself bringing the right mosset every day, and us
also playing together. I think that's the biggest things that
we always play together. We never point fingers at each
other on both sides at the ball, and we just
got to always have that. Mond says that we can
be the best office in the NFL.
Speaker 7 (32:20):
All right. Here is the slate on the NFL Network
for this weekend's preseason games. Of course, it starts with
Titans at Falcons. That is tomorrow night at seven o'clock.
There's actually a double header tomorrow night, and then a
quadruple header, yes, one, two, three, four on Saturday afternoon,
kicking off with Browns at the Eagles, the game I
will be at, and then Sunday afternoon Jaguars Saints. But
(32:42):
let's go back to the Titans and Falcons because our
Sarah Walsh is here now, but she's going to be
there then at Titans Falcons. Sarah, what should we be
looking for from the quarterbacks in that game?
Speaker 16 (32:55):
Well, kim Ward is going to continue his progress. The
Titans hope he will once and start tomorrow. He got reps,
he got two. Series was here in Tampa a week ago.
This is all part of a Titans ten day road trip,
which is not the easiest thing to do. They had
joint practices down here in Tampa, a game against the Bucks.
Speaker 7 (33:11):
I mentioned he went to series. He did lead a
touchdown drive, which.
Speaker 16 (33:15):
The Titans felt was just an indication of what they
expect to see out of this guy. And then they
went up to Atlanta joint practices with the Falcons.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
And a game with them tomorrow night.
Speaker 16 (33:25):
Now, Brian Callahan said, this road trip, which isn't exactly easy,
is all part of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, and
that is a lot what you go through, obviously when
you are a rookie quarterback.
Speaker 7 (33:35):
He likes that Cam is going to be out on
that field.
Speaker 16 (33:37):
He said, it's about being in the stadium, on the
field by himself, hearing those calls, managing the clock. Now,
we understand he is not going to get an extended
amount of time to do that, but he will get
another chance to start and get himself comfortable in NFL
action against not his own teammates. Right, he had a
couple nice hookups with Calvin Ridley, who will be his
number one receiver. A we could go here in Tampa
(33:59):
and then on the Falcon side of things, Michael Penick
Junior is not going to play. He didn't play last week.
That is all part of Braheem Morris's plan. He said,
you know, he's trying to mitigate the chance that he
is in an injury type of situation. Right, They want
to slow that down. But obviously Pennick's got in a
little bit of his skirmish yesterday at Titan's practice got
knocked to the ground, and that is not what the
Falcons want to see. We know that will not be
(34:20):
happening during the game tomorrow night because Pennix will not
be in action.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
Judy, all right, Sarah, you are in the Tampa area,
so let's talk about the Bucks. They play the Steelers
this weekend. Mike Tomlin said today most of his starters,
including Aaron Rodgers, not going to play in this game.
Todd Bowles taking the opposite tech, most of his starters
are going to play. What can you tell us about
Baker Mayfield getting ready for this season?
Speaker 16 (34:44):
Well, really, the only exception there is Todd saying most
of his starters are going to play. Levante David is
not going to play. Mike Evans is not going to play.
Those guys have a combined more than two decades in
this league, so that's a veteran rest situation with those guys.
Baker Mayfield is going to play, and he didn't play
last week. I heard from Baker to and he told
me that any game scenario they're doing these call it
periods in practice, simulating game like situations.
Speaker 7 (35:06):
He said, it's definitely.
Speaker 16 (35:07):
Better when you can get out there on the field,
he said, when it's just the eleven out there and
I can only hear grizz grizz of course, being his
new offensive coordinator, Josh Grizzard, So this will be his
first reps with Josh Grizzard in a game like situation.
He said, anytime you can do something like that, that
is a good experience. Now, Baker also had a really
cool experience this week. Him and his wife Emily Mayfield
(35:29):
have the Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation. And what you're
looking at is a video from earlier in this week.
That's Baker and Emily announcing at Oklahoma football practice to
that young man listening there. That is Jacob Snyder, a
walk on at Oklahoma. He is the very first recipient
of the Baker and Emily Foundation Scholarship. Ten thousand dollars
to that young man for all his hard work. And
of course, Baker Mayfield, he's the embodiment of what it
(35:53):
means to be a walk on, the only walk on
to go on and when a Heisman Trophy and judy,
he certainly has not forget where he came from. So
the congratulations to Jacob. I think it's a really cool
thing that Baker and Emily are doing there with their foundation.
Speaker 7 (36:07):
Congratulations to Jacob an awesome war, complied Baker in Mayfield.
That was a very cool scene. Thank you, Sarah Walsh.
You know who else had a joint practice? Well, the
Saints and the Rams. They had a joint practice. It's
all love. There are Omar Ruiz and Steve Weish are
here to talk about it. Guys.
Speaker 14 (36:26):
Well, dude, you talk about the Rams in the Saints
happening a joint practice. It wasn't supposed to be that way, Omar.
The Rams are supposed to have a joint practice with
the Chargers. They play Sunday next door played this weekend
next door Sofi Stadium.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
How did this come together with the Saints?
Speaker 8 (36:39):
Yeah, I came to betther quickly came into view on Monday.
They were able to schedule the practice at the stadium
next to the stadium in Carson where the Chargers used
to play years ago when they first moved to Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
And if you've ever wondered.
Speaker 8 (36:53):
How a joint practice works, that one team has their
offense going the other team's defense and on the other field,
it's the opposite. And there was a cool moment there,
Steve where DeVante Adams catches a touchdown and both sides
of the field were going to the same direction, to
the same end zone. The Saints had an incompletion. There's
a lot of you know, high spirited, good level competition.
Even Sean McVay got into it with the Mario Davis
(37:15):
a little bit, that little physicality, too much extra, Sean
my Fay thought on Kyrie Williams. But how it came together,
they each got the work that they wanted to get in.
Saints will obviously head back to New Orleans this weekend,
get ready to play the Jags on Sunday, and like
you said, the Rams get ready to play the Chargers
on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Right, they cancel the joint practice with the Chargers. Charges
had too many injuries.
Speaker 14 (37:31):
Just want to play it safe so they can get
that game off this week.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
And Justin Herbert supposed to play in that game as well.
Speaker 14 (37:36):
When you talk about the Saints and the incompleted pass
on that field, their quarterback issue is still up in
the air. You know, you've got Tyler Shook, the rookie
Spencer Rattler, Jake Hayner. From what you saw at the
joint practice today, was there any more clarity anything that
you saw orld Maybe Kellen Moore.
Speaker 8 (37:52):
Said, Now, from what I saw and from talking to
multiple people, had still a wide open competition. And even
though Kellen Moore has said that Jake Haynter is in it,
it really is between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shuck. And
we saw Spencer Rattler start most of the drills today
when they were going ones versus ones with the Rams,
it was Rattler, but then Tyler Shuck would get his
(38:13):
opportunities as well. And there you see there Moore saying
he hasn't decided who's going to play on Sunday or
at least get the start in terms of the quarterback position.
But Moore said that he's been impressed the way both
have battled through adversity on the field. Tyler Shuck, of course,
on Sunday against the Chargers, threw a pick six, then
came right back and threw a big touchdown pass in
(38:33):
that game, and they did similar today. I saw Tyler
Shuck lead a couple of touchdown drives in the red
zone when they were doing that opportunity. But then it
was Spencer Ratler with the play of the day, a
big long touchdown pass to Rashid Shaheed. So that is
still very much playing out. I asked Callen Moore after practice,
what would be the ideal timeline for them to have
that starter in place to get ready for Arizona Week one,
(38:56):
and he said, jokingly, sometime before the game. I think
game week would probably be the most practical. But they're
still giving both quarterbacks every opportunity to win that job,
and both quarterbacks have, which surprised me, giving how many
veterans there are on the team, the support of the organization,
all those leaders on defense, all that veteran leadership that
(39:16):
they have on both sides of the football, in support
of these young quarterbacks, ready to rally behind them.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
Whoever wins the job, they.
Speaker 14 (39:22):
Better rally behind them, because right now, if you still
have two, you don't have one. You know who else
doesn't have one. The Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Time now for well rested wins presented by Safa, Tom Pelisero,
Mark Gross.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
Steve Wise, Mark Cooney's won this week?
Speaker 4 (39:39):
Well.
Speaker 9 (39:39):
Who are steps in for the Eagles for the injured
Landon Dickerson, who has the meniscus there.
Speaker 10 (39:44):
And look, this is why it's so difficult to repeat Fellows.
Speaker 9 (39:47):
Eagles best offensive line in football last year, Lose McKai beck.
Speaker 10 (39:51):
In the free agency.
Speaker 9 (39:52):
Now you may have Landon Dickerson out for extended period
of time, So somebody is going to have to have
a well rested winner as a Brown too, with an injuries,
he might have.
Speaker 10 (40:01):
To have a receiver step up as well. So all
pro guard, all pro receiver.
Speaker 9 (40:05):
Let's see who's going to step out of the shadows
one of these draft picks or free agent signings for
Howie Roseman, Steve.
Speaker 14 (40:11):
Well Mark, Daniel Jones, a quarterback in Indianapolis, he better
have a well rested win. Otherwise he might be well
resting because him and Anthony Richardson have yet to decide.
Are make it easy to decide who's going to be
the starting quarterback there now? Daniel Jones got extended play
last week after Richardson got hurt early in the preseason opener.
Very up and down below fifty percent completion rate. Did
(40:31):
lead a couple scoring drives, but again the reports aren't.
Neither has really really distanced himself from the other in
this competition. These are veteran quarterbacks who need to step up,
and one thing that should be used as a barometer.
Remember Gardner Minshew came here and won seven games and
almost got this team to the playoff two years ago.
One of these two guys's got to step up and
be better than that for the Colts to have any
(40:53):
chance in a wide open AFC South.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
In case you missed it, and I know you did
because you were watching The Insiders presented by Safa Taylor,
Swift appeared on The New Heights podcast with her boyfriend
Travis as well as brother Jason and talked about how
she fell in love with football.
Speaker 17 (41:13):
I didn't know what the chains were. I didn't know
what a tight end was.
Speaker 12 (41:20):
I'm ever thankful for you diving into the football world.
Speaker 7 (41:24):
Oh my god. I fell in love with it.
Speaker 10 (41:25):
I became obsessed with it.
Speaker 17 (41:26):
I became like a person who was running through the
halls of my house screaming. We drafted Xavier or Worthy
and my friends are like, what is who body snatched you?
Speaker 4 (41:38):
This is?
Speaker 13 (41:38):
This is?
Speaker 7 (41:39):
What do you mean? We're talking about?
Speaker 17 (41:41):
Cover two, Cover four, Cover zero, man cover, We're talking.
Speaker 15 (41:45):
We're learning.
Speaker 17 (41:46):
I continue to learn.
Speaker 12 (41:47):
Amy somebody else that even knows what those coverages are.
Speaker 17 (41:50):
Yeah, I'm not ready to be an analyst right now,
but give me sixteen months.
Speaker 12 (41:57):
I'm going to pick up on it.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
My main hope after watching that clip, Judy, is that
Travis Kelsey at some point comes home from a game
and Taylor starts going, Now, when they showed cover four,
why didn't you break that off right there?
Speaker 2 (42:11):
I thought you should have run the out, and instead
you ran the dig.
Speaker 7 (42:16):
I would really love Taylor Swift as an analyst because
she could hardly do worse than some of the ones
we have to listen to.
Speaker 6 (42:24):
I like how you get your significant other to understand
the game. If you're watching The Quarterback Show on Netflix,
Kristin Harper Goff is going through play calls with Jared Goff.
Speaker 2 (42:33):
You know it was far into her a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 10 (42:35):
I love it.
Speaker 6 (42:36):
You're diving in, You're showing an interest in your husband
or boyfriend's job.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I dig it. Well, we appreciate it though.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
Everybody who'd weren't part of a million people watching that
live last night, you know you wanted to be here instead.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
We're back on Monday Games tomorrow.
Speaker 10 (42:52):
I'll see if
