Speaker 1 (00:09):
The Colts officially have a starting quarterback, and it will
not be the guy they drafted number four overall just
a couple of years ago. We will tell you what
the future holds more Anthony Richardson and why turning to
Danny Dimes makes sense for a Colts team that needs
to win now. The Bengals got their money's worth out
of the second preseason game, and somewhere Joe Burrow might
(00:31):
still be running for his life. Brian Moldinger's back. He'll
be here to break down what he saw from Cincinnati
and what that defense must do to stop somebody. It's
also fantasy draft season and some quarterbacks could be cheak
codes to win your league. Our Michael f Floria will
be here to tell you who, why and how, maybe
even when and where.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I don't know. I don't know if we'll have enough time.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Welcome Inside with the Insiders, presented by Best Buy alongside
Ian Rappaportatista and Mike Gariffolo. I am Tom Pellisero. Sixteen
days away now from kickoff to the twenty twenty five
NFL season, Just one week away from cutdown day. Tons
of action, tons of transactions, tons of trades and other
(01:15):
moves to come. We will cover all of it over
these next seven days. Right now, let's talk about another
team that finally officially has their starting quarterback. It is
Daniel Jones in Indianapolis, winning out in a training camp
competition against the former number four overall draft pick, Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Jones, the former.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Giant starter, now gets the ball week one against Miami
and well beyond.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
According to coach Shane Steichen.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
I thought the competition in training camp was great by
both of those guys. I thought they both competed really
hard and it was good to see them cheering for
each other and battling the way they did. And you
guys heard me talk about the consistency, and that's really
what I was looking for. And really the operation at
the line of scrimmage, the check x, the protection, the
(02:02):
ball placement, the completion percentage. I think all that played
a factor in it. I think Daniel Daniel did a
great job doing that, and I think ar has made
strides in that area. But I do feel that, you know,
you still needs to continue to develop.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
No, he's got to respect the decision, you know. I
feel like he used the better fit for the team
better fit for the outcome of us winning. So you
just got to respect it and just keep working. You know,
that doesn't undermine any other work out of been putting in, doesn't.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
You know.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
He doesn't say that I have to improve. You know,
I'm proud of the improvement I've made, saying is also
proud of that. So you gotta keep stacking on that,
just keep getting better.
Speaker 6 (02:37):
I'm fired up, I'm excited, and you know, like I said,
we've put in a lot of good work. I think
we've made a lot of progress, but we have a
lot of you know, kind of critical work looking forward
in these next couple of weeks to get ready.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
And with that, the Colt streak is over in terms
of consecutive Here's what the same starting quarterback it ends
at two. That's how long it's pinned since the Colts
had actual consistency at the quarterback position. Of course, the
retirement of Andrew Luck certainly played a big factor in that,
and it also led us to where they are right now,
which is drafting Anthony Richardson a couple of years ago,
(03:13):
a player who at that point had not played a
whole lot of football even throughout the course of his
college career a one year starter at Florida. Ideally he
would have had the time two years ago to sit,
but they needed him to be on the field. Ian
Daniel Jones went to Indianapolis on a one year, fourteen
million dollar deal in large part because it gave him.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
The opportunity to compete. How did he win this job?
Speaker 7 (03:37):
He really won this job, Daniel Jones did with consistency
and the ability to operate Shane Steichen's offense. And there's
so much here, and obviously I know you guys are
going to get to a lot of it. Well, what
this boils down to is who can help this team's
offense score more officially, more quickly, stay on the field,
do all of the regular quarterback things. Who can do it,
(03:59):
quit and get this team role. And they are as
an organization, really a team that needs to win for
general manager Chris Pallard, for coach Shane Stikeen, for a
team that is I would say at least fairly talented
enough if they have adequate quarterback play to go out
and compete in games and be there at the end.
It is very clear after the training camp competition, Anthony
(04:20):
Richardson was just not the direction they were going to go.
He is still talented. I'm sure he has made strides,
just not quick enough, not quick enough to run the
offense that Shane Steiken wants and needs. For Daniel Joe,
what he gets is the perfect ability to restart his career.
It did not work out with the giant tipple leading
(04:40):
to the playoffs. He believes he is better. He has
targeted a starting job, targeted this place to go win it.
Speaker 8 (04:46):
He did exactly that.
Speaker 7 (04:48):
And for this organization for them to move on from
Richardson after drafting him, knowing everything is at stake, it
must mean a lot to them.
Speaker 8 (04:57):
They had to go with Daniel Jones.
Speaker 9 (05:01):
Yeah, this was a pick for solidity over the highs
and lows that they were getting with Anthony Richardson. Daniel
Jones is solid. You heard Shane Stike and use the
word consistency. They wanted consistency, getting in and out of
the huddle, calling the plays, getting the checks right. They
need just level setting play. What you get with Anthony
(05:22):
Richardson is a much higher ceiling and maybe a much
lower floor.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
But they need steadiness. They need to be.
Speaker 9 (05:30):
Able to count on the quarterback to function in the
offense to be able to run the offense, and they
weren't getting that, and they hadn't gotten it for two
years with Anthony Richardson. A big part of that, of course,
is that he wasn't able to stay on the field.
He was injured so often. That is an occasional problem
with Daniel Jones, certainly not as often as it was
with Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
This is a team, and this is part of the thinking.
Speaker 9 (05:52):
This is the team that won eight games last year
with a very unstable quarterback situation. Well, Daniel Jones should
give you more stability, and with just a little more
stability they could win a few more games in a
very very winnable division. And as Ian pointed out, this
is a team, this is a general manager and a
head coach that need to win right now.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Daniel Jones is the safer pick for that. All right.
Speaker 10 (06:16):
So Anthony Richardson, thanks for playing. We got some nice
parting gifts for you. You can head home now.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
No.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
No, the cults, you know, especially this regime. Judy just
talked about them.
Speaker 10 (06:26):
They they're the ones that drafted this guy and they
still believe in him. Chris Ballard does, and there's a
lot of talent theory or even our Michael f Florio
was talking about, hey, why are you still in on
Anthony Richardson? Like people say that to him and he goes,
this is why. And there was a play where he's
just drifting to his left and he just flicked it
and threw it forty yards to his right.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
We've seen it. It's there. We know it's there. Now,
what about all that other stuff? Right?
Speaker 10 (06:48):
What about the commitment, the slimming down, all that stuff
that we talked about and people wrote about coming into
training camp, about his fitness and all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
That's great.
Speaker 10 (06:57):
Now, stay committed to it and stay committed to the
ex's And because he wound up getting hurt in that
preseason opener because he didn't see the hot guy coming
off the side, got to pick that up. These are
the kinds of things that it wasn't so much about
him getting hurt, It was that, Hey, that was a
critical blitz.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Pickup that you needed to see. And so he's got
to continue to do those things. It's not the end
for him. He's just got to earn his way back.
Speaker 10 (07:17):
Into the good graces to get himself into a starting
job Daniel Jones, former Giant, current Giant Jamis Winston. A
lot of speculation even on this very here program about
could the Giants trade Jamis Winston too, the Saints or
maybe one of these other teams that has a quarterback need.
Assistant General manager Brandon Brown says, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
We're flattered by your interest.
Speaker 10 (07:39):
But he is a New York Giant and that was
part of this was getting this quarterback room to have
a little bit more confidence, a little bit more personality,
a lot more personality in Jamis Winston's case. So the
Giants have four quarterbacks, including Tommy DeVito and Jackson Dart
along with Winston and Russell Wilson got to decide whether
they're going to do They're going to keep three in
most likely what they're going to do with Tommy DeVito
(07:59):
could be cut next week.
Speaker 7 (08:02):
Ian As far as the Los Angeles Rams go, they
don't want to have any of these conversations.
Speaker 8 (08:08):
They don't want to talk about trading quarterback. They don't
want to have to talk.
Speaker 7 (08:10):
About going on getting a quarterback to back up Jimmy Garoppolo.
What they want to talk about is Matthew Stafford being
back at practice for the second straight day.
Speaker 8 (08:19):
Listen to Sean McVay.
Speaker 7 (08:20):
You could hear the it's not giddy tess, but it
certainly is satisfaction that Stafford for the second day in
a row, had a good day.
Speaker 8 (08:28):
Stack days is how we called it.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
There was the kind of bounce back that they really
have been looking for for about a month. He has
been dealing with an aggravated disc, has not been able
to practice.
Speaker 8 (08:38):
Pulled all the way back yesterday today. That's two days
in a row. They can do it three days in
a row.
Speaker 7 (08:44):
Anyway, All is good now for the rams of Matthew Stafford,
fingers crossed should be okay for week one.
Speaker 10 (08:51):
Thought you were going to quote major league there three
days in a row. That's coold winning streak. Jordan Love
Love hurts not as much as he did a couple
of days ago. Now he's getting some reps and joint
practices here are going to get reps in the joint practice.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
He has been getting reps in.
Speaker 10 (09:05):
Seven on seven an individual not in team drills, stay
away from the quarterback. No accidents to hit that thumb
that he got surgery on. So by accounts on the
scene from the reporters, there he hit a couple of
deep balls in practice and looking good. After all, it
didn't affect his right hand, it was his left hand,
so why not continue to perform in practice now that
(09:26):
he is back duty.
Speaker 9 (09:29):
This was certainly an interesting scene before the Bengals and
Commander's game last night. We had Trey Hendrickson. There you go,
Trey Hendrickson. Who's that he's talking to? That's Duopdobin at
the Bengals front office executive. Unfortunately, they did not hammer
out a new deal while they were just standing there.
This of course comes against the backdrop of the Bengals
listening to trade offers for Hendrickson. He talked to ESPN's
(09:51):
Laura Ruttledge on the field and he said, as has
been reported for weeks, it is the guaranteed money that
is the hold up right now. He also told her
there has been no progress. He reiterated that he is
prepared to sit out if necessary. Also, interestingly, Joe Burrow
was asked about this after the game and he said,
I think historically these deals with us have gotten done
closer to week one. He pointed out he signed his
(10:13):
deal on the Thursday before the season opener, so he says,
you know, like, we still got two weeks ago. Burrow
was looking at the calendar figures, still got plenty of
time in Cincinnati.
Speaker 10 (10:23):
Elsewhere in that game. On the other side, Brian Robinson Jr.
Did not play in dan Quinn, pretty much confirming that
they're going to move on from Robinson. Here he is
said to make a total of three and a half
million dollars per this season, excuse me, in the final
year of his deal, so.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Looking like a potential trade.
Speaker 10 (10:39):
Both sides agreed not going to play in that game
to keep a trade alive.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Didn't want them to get hurt in that case.
Speaker 10 (10:44):
There's interest and not just like oh, his agent or
his marketing guy told me there's interest. I know there's
interest because as I've reported this, I've heard from teams
who are saying, what happened there? How did he fall
out of favor? Does he want a new contract? Yeah,
I mean eventually he does, but this is a contract
and right now, given this situation, my understanding is he
wants the best possible situation for him to have the
(11:06):
best possible season, ian to set him up for a
payday this offseason as a free agent.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
So right now, all about fit for Brian Robinson. I
believe he's going to have a new home.
Speaker 10 (11:15):
If it's not be a trade and they gotta cut him,
he'll have a new home.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
In short order. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:19):
And the fact that he hits ub escalators on his
contract makes about three million dollars.
Speaker 8 (11:24):
It's great, you want money. Money is awesome.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
But some teams looking at them and they go, actually,
maybe that salary is a little bit too high. Maybe
they want to so maybe it might be a situation
where the Commanders take on some salary in order to
trade him get a draft pick or get a picks.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Well, but you're right.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
That's really the thing that I get the most his
teams being like, hang on, why are they trading him?
Speaker 8 (11:43):
Did something happen that we don't know about.
Speaker 7 (11:45):
This is starting running back in the NFL, who now
seems very much available. It seems like teams have sort
of gotten their hands around nothing happened. It is just
they're not going to extend them time to move on.
I do expect him to have a new home. I
do not expect him to play with the command and
for the twenty twenty five season for the Dallas Cowboys.
Let's talk about Michaeh Parsons, because one thing this offseason
(12:06):
we have not done is talk about Michah Parsons.
Speaker 8 (12:09):
And see that's him right there.
Speaker 7 (12:11):
We've seen a lot of that, him walking back and forth,
not practicing, still holding in, dealing with you know, fact tightness.
Speaker 8 (12:18):
Hope one of these days it gets better.
Speaker 7 (12:20):
The Dallas Cowboys and Marca Parsons if they are in
fact destined to do a new contract, and we will see.
It does not sounding the Cowboys have any urgency to
get this done at all. Just listen with Jerry Jones said,
it's going to happen closer to the start of the
season than not.
Speaker 8 (12:34):
They did it with Ceedee Lamb, they did with Dax,
so there is time.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
But they do need to get going on Hawk up,
the best defensive player in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Cowboys practicing right now inside the Star in Frisco, Texas,
Jerry Jones. According to reporters on the scene, addressing the crowd,
someone yelled out, we want Micah. That's been happening in
a fair amount. Did I mention sixteen days away from
that kickoff game, Mike, and.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
It just so happens to be Cowboys Eagles. Yeah, will
Michael playing that game. Don't know will Aj Brown playing
that game. I'm gonna say yes. I mean barring some
kind of setback.
Speaker 10 (13:06):
And we've been telling you that there hasn't been a
great concern about his status for week one. It's just
making sure that they're not going to suffer some kind
of setback.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Here. This was today our guy Dave Zangaro crushing it
with the video right here.
Speaker 10 (13:20):
AJ Brown doing some work leading up the practice, going
to ramp himself up and again as long as the
arrow keep pointing up, he'll be back to work and
should be back well in advance of Week one. One
guy who's not gonna make Week one another wide receiver
Jalen McMillan. This is a guy that the Bucks were
really high on after last year suffered a severe next
brain here. My understanding is he could miss about half
(13:42):
the season. That is the projected time frame, somewhere around
six to eight weeks. They've got to buy in week nine,
so potentially could be out through that. They still have
Chris Godwin who is on the pup list, so that
means a Mecca Abuka, friend of the Insiders, gave us
a great interview right before the start.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Of training camp.
Speaker 10 (13:59):
He is gonna need be called upon to step in
immediately because it might be him and Mike Evans as.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
The starters all return there.
Speaker 10 (14:06):
That ebook has had a great camp down there in
Tampa Town.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
I think we've seen enough angles that Jayalen McMillan catch
that's putting me in Paige. I think we're gonta something
worse for McMillan. Justin Jefferson already back out on the
field on Monday at miss time in camp with a
hamstring injury. Only do an individual out of the gate.
Kevin O'Connell said, they're going to give it to him
in bits and pieces.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Here's my bit and piece on it.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
I saw him running around at the joint practice against
the Patriots after last week's joint practice. He looks completely fine.
Just put him in a glass case, bust him out.
Monday night football in Week one against the Bears. Love
More com on this edition of The Insiders, including look
back at the last game of preseason week two. There
were some fireworks. There was Joe Burrow running around like
(14:53):
a madman while everyone on earth was screaming, why is
he in the game. Jane Daniels also taking some contact here,
then me go down. I'll tell you why lesl Saltisse.
We want to see highlights from him, Bauld He'll be
with us. Break down that game.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
Next on The Insiders, Bengals Commanders On The Insiders, presented
by best by Jaden Daniels. Offensive brook of the Year
making his preseason debut.
Speaker 8 (15:19):
But first it is going to be.
Speaker 7 (15:21):
That guy, one of their big time acquisitions, Deebo Samuel
one carry nineteen yards on the day. Get him off
the field, get him ready for the season. Same thing
with this guy, this is Jayden Daniels. Three plays later,
second nine, all anyone is doing is yelling get down.
Speaker 8 (15:37):
Instead he scores. He said he wanted to score. I
hear you, but really would want you to be safe.
You're ready for the season. Same with this guy right here,
Joe Burrow.
Speaker 7 (15:46):
Second quarter Now Bengals Charlie fourteen sep But it's the preseason.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
Who cares about the score?
Speaker 7 (15:50):
Joe Burrow to Charlie Jones four yard touchdown. He is good,
They're all good. Everyone is happy. Get him away. It
is time for the regular season. But before we do that,
let's bring in our good friend Brian Ballding R.
Speaker 8 (16:04):
Baldy, Welcome back to the Insiders. Always funing have you.
We learned a lot watching those highlights. At least I
did tell me what you learned.
Speaker 11 (16:12):
Well, you know, offensively, they have come out two weeks
in a row. Two weeks ago in the first preseason
game against Eagles, went nine plays seventy one yards, the
ball didn't hit the ground. You know, Joe Burrow hits
the Jamar Chase for touchdown. And then last night they
went eleven plays fifty six yards right down the field
and they scored. The offense is sharp, starting offensive line,
running backs, They've got their starting unit out there, and
(16:34):
so Joe has been very, very sharp.
Speaker 12 (16:36):
He's been crisp.
Speaker 11 (16:37):
We know he took a play where we probably should
have gotten down last night, but for the bost part,
he saw the blitz right there, got the ball out hot.
And the offense looks a lot like the offense did
a year ago. And you know, you got a new
rookie left guard and Dylan Fairchild he looks just fine
in there at this point. But he and honestly, like
we watched that defense last night the week before against
(16:58):
the Eagles, Tanner McKee looked like.
Speaker 12 (17:00):
Joe Burrow against the Bengals defense.
Speaker 11 (17:02):
I mean literally the ball almost didn't hit the ground
and threw for Tournent fifty yards and you know, two touchdowns.
Speaker 13 (17:08):
But you know last night, you know, honestly, to see
this defense be so loose and not squeeze anything even
on this zone pressure right here where you know you
see you see this is just the triple trap.
Speaker 12 (17:22):
Double scoop right there and a little countertrait and you
know they go down to the score.
Speaker 11 (17:26):
I mean, they made it look so easy, and so
yesterday was stopped for the run was difficult against the Eagles.
They couldn't stop Tanner McKee and so Al Golden comes
in and I don't know that if the talent is
that much better the coordinator is that much better than
what they had last year, because it looks and I
know it's just preseasoning, but it.
Speaker 12 (17:46):
Looks a lot like what we witnessed a year ago.
Speaker 11 (17:50):
An explosive, dynamic offense and a defense that has a
lot a long ways to go where they're counting on
a rookie linebacker, they're counting on some young defense lineman,
and we got to see these guys kind of real quick.
If this group is going to tighten things.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
Up, just a quick thought here, Baldi, you know what
actually really helped Trey Hendrickson. Just put him right out there,
put him right again, let him rush, let him affect
the court.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
All right.
Speaker 8 (18:16):
We've talked about it plenty.
Speaker 7 (18:18):
We know how big of an addition that would be
when that happens. If that happens, Baldy, thank you very much,
great stuff. As always, let's stay in this division. Let's
go visit with our new friend, Peyton Wilson, the Steelers linebacker.
He talked with Judy and Tom.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Kickoff is fast approaching for the Steelers and the rest
of the NFL, and one guy who's particularly jacked up.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
You can see it right there.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Peyton Wilson, heading into year two, starting linebacker for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Join us right now on The Insiders presented
by Best by Tom Pilisero and Judy Batista.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Nineteen days away.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Here, Peyton, just tell me how we're looking, particularly on
defence right now with Pitchburdh.
Speaker 12 (19:02):
It's been amazing.
Speaker 14 (19:03):
Obviously, you know, we do camp in La Trobe, so
everybody's really close, really tight. It's been really cool. To
be out there flying around. The communication has been great,
execution has been good. Obviously we're still early, so there's
some stuff to fix, but I mean, talent wise, roster wise,
comatic wise, it's going to be a fun year.
Speaker 15 (19:24):
All right.
Speaker 9 (19:24):
Right at the start of camp, you did an interview
where you said you think you are already one of
the better coverage linebackers in the entire NFL. So give
us the scouting report on you. What do you like
about where your game is right now?
Speaker 14 (19:39):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, last year I was
more of a more of a cover line backer role,
and obviously I love doing that stuff. But just I'm
really excited this year to be able to showcase that,
you know, I'm a three down backer, able to play
no matter what situation we're in, and you know, the
coaches have been seeming to trust me with that and
it's it's been going really well. So I mean, I'm
(19:59):
just really excited to showcase that. I mean, love coverage,
love doing all that stuff, you know, making the big plays,
but just you know, excited to be out there for
every every snap of the game.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
So obviously, some different parts on this team. Jalen Ramsey
coming in, Slay coming in Niko Fitzpatrick now as a
member of the Miami Dolphins. Down the stretch last season,
the Steelers defense the whole team, but the Steelers defense
wasn't up to the standard that you guys have set.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
What if anything gives you.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Optimism you guys are going to go back to playing
that dominant.
Speaker 12 (20:28):
Pittsburgh type d Yeah, I think you just said it.
Speaker 14 (20:31):
You know, last year we definitely didn't finish how we
should have finished. Early in the season, it was great
and then kind of fell apart those last five games.
So just I mean, that's the motivation for it right there.
You know, we want to be the best defense in
the NFL. So just you know, continuing to communicate, you know,
not leaving stones unturned in terms of questions with schematics
(20:52):
and stuff, to just you know, continue into each week
progress and you know, at the end of the season,
we shouldn't be regressing kind of how we did last year.
You know, continue to live up to that standard of
being the best defense in the world.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
All right.
Speaker 9 (21:06):
Obviously, the big change in Pittsburgh is the quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Tell us what it's been like for you facing him,
Obviously there's an enormous age difference. How much interaction do
you have with him? What's it been like being his teammates.
Speaker 12 (21:22):
It's been great.
Speaker 14 (21:23):
I mean he's one of the best leaders I've ever
been around. Obviously, probably the most experienced football player that
I've ever been around.
Speaker 12 (21:30):
So a younger guy like me going in.
Speaker 14 (21:32):
A year too, it's frustrating, and it's also been really
helpful to play against him and Cam just how smart
you know, the things that he does you don't see
very often from a lot of quarterbacks. So just playing
against that experience you know all of this. I mean,
whether you're in your tenth, fifteenth, or second year, I mean,
this guy brings some stuff to the table that you've
never seen before. So just you know, getting to go
(21:53):
against him every day in practice has really really been
great for our defense.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Obviously, you're not allowed to hit Aaron Rodgers, not just
because he's you know, the old guy, he's forty plus
plus he's easier quarterback. You know, you do get the hit.
Week one, it's your former teammate Justin Fields, who's now
the starting quarterback with the Jets. That's kind of a
unique type of miss up you're playing a guy that
you were with that recently, do you start like waking
up in the middle of the night dreaming of hitting
Justin fields?
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Like, how does that all come together? Here? As you
guys focus on the opener?
Speaker 14 (22:23):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, we're still in the preseason,
so you try to take it game by game, but
I mean, Week ones not too far away, so just
you know, kind of chomping at the bit to get
to that.
Speaker 12 (22:32):
And you had to be fun, you know.
Speaker 14 (22:34):
I mean, I actually build a great relationship with Justin.
He's he was in some of our Bible studies, and
just the way that he approaches the game is amazing.
So I'm just excited to get out there and compete
against him. Obviously, you know, we want to go out
there and absolutely destroy Justin. But at the end of
the day, you know, Justin's a great guy and I'm
just super excited to play against him and can't wait
(22:54):
for that Week one.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Matchup, nineteen short days away, Jets and Steelers. One of
the good ones in Week one, one of the good
ones right here, Peyton Wilson kind enough to join us.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Appreciate the time, man, yep, thanks for having me, What.
Speaker 10 (23:11):
Did the Jags have in store for Travis Hunter in
the regular season, The full reveal that's coming in just
a couple of short weeks, one of the most anticipated
two way players Gosh in decades, Camera and Wolf. Looking
forward to seeing what's happening there, looking forward to seeing
him back on the field because he was held out
with an upper body injury seemingly as a precaution of
(23:33):
the last preseason game. Back to work today, what's the
latest on the Hunter status.
Speaker 16 (23:39):
Well, Travis Hunter was back at practice today, did a
little bit of individual, a little.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
Bit of team going through the.
Speaker 16 (23:47):
Progressions, but not the full speed seven to seven and
eleven on eleven. The hope is that Thursday, when they
get down to Miami for joint practices, he'll be able
to go full.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
He's got the upper body injury. You know, that's a
hockey term.
Speaker 16 (23:59):
Everybody's wondering, Hey, is this a sign of overuse?
Speaker 5 (24:02):
No, this is something very minor.
Speaker 16 (24:04):
I'm told if it was a regular season game last weekend,
he would have played. Just a situation of them trying
to get him closer to one hundred percent. The hope
is he's good to go Thursday and he could start
playing both sides defense and offense.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
On that side of.
Speaker 16 (24:17):
The ball against the Dolphins, there have no concern for
him for Week one, and yes, he will be the
two way star they intended to be, full time on offense,
easy in on defense, and earning more reps as the
season goes on.
Speaker 10 (24:30):
Me too, Travis, You're not missing anybody. I get a
little fist pump action right there. We're gonna have more
exciting b row if Travis Hunter in the future. I
promise you that once he gets back on the field,
let's talk about this offense which Travis Hunter will be
a part of. Liam Cohen coming over from Tampa where
he did a great job of the Buccaneers offense, what
are we expecting from the Jaguars as we get closer
to the regular season.
Speaker 16 (24:52):
Yeah, you're already seeing some changes the Jaguars are doing
with Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
In his first two preseason games.
Speaker 16 (24:57):
They've been working with him on his footwork and how
he's going progressions, and Liam Cohen said he's been pleased
with Trevor Lawrence's process. As you've watched the first two games,
Trevor's getting through his second and third reads more efficiently,
quicker processing, using his legs a little bit more, and
getting rid of that ball when he needs to. That's
something they've really worked on. He's not retreating in the pocket,
(25:18):
He's stepping up in the pocket. And Trevor Lawrence admittedly
said recently, hey, look this is your five.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
I'm entering my prime. I've got to turn it up.
Speaker 16 (25:26):
He got that big fifty five million dollars a year
contract last year. He knows the pressures on him, and
the Jaguars believe this new scheme with Liam Cohen, which
they had wonders with in Tampa with Baker Mayfield, will
do wonders for Trevor Lawrence as well. They wanted him
to trust his teammates. Don't be superman and have all
the turnovers you did last year. Be a guy that
can trust Brian Thomas Junior. You can travish Travis Hunter,
(25:49):
you can trust Travis Etn who's going to be a
big factor in the passing game. And early signs are
that transition's going well and they're ready to go week one.
Speaker 10 (25:59):
Yeah, don't be a super super hero when you get
your footstepped on and you're falling down. Him was the
only hiccup in that game against the Saints. He tried
to hand the ball off. It was an ugly exchange
wound up being a fumble. Just just take the five
yard loss in the regular season and live to see
another down at Travis Hunter, Cameron Wolf.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
You could see Red October over his shoulder for me.
Speaker 10 (26:17):
Former Philly guy, not an Andy Reid, former Philly guy.
Speaker 15 (26:22):
So, Hollywood did a little work yesterday and which was good.
You'll get a little bit more today and then we'll
just see. We'll see how he progresses through this thing. So,
but he wants to It's not a matter of wanting
to be out there. He wants to do it. It's
just taking it slow. So we don't want any setbacks
(26:45):
with this thing. Calling forward here.
Speaker 9 (26:50):
They certainly do not want any setbacks with that offense.
Look at all of that offensive firepower gathered there, just
casually chatting on the fields with Patrick Mahomes seventeen day
until we see them take the field together in South
Paolo opening the season against the Chargers on the Friday night,
the first Friday night of the season. Let's check in
on the Chiefs with our Jeffrey Chidia and Brian Baldinger.
(27:13):
All right, Jeffrey, I want to start with you, because
they've had all that firepower, but they were middle of
the pack last year in offense, fifteenth in scoring, sixteenth
in yards. How do they get more out of all
that talent this season?
Speaker 17 (27:26):
Well, well, the key thing, Judy is making sure all
those guys are available. Obviously, Travis Kelson's getting up there
in age, he's going to be turning thirty six years old.
But having Rashid Rice and Hollywood Brown on the field
for as long as possible is going to be key. Obviously,
Rice is facing a suspension. We don't know what's going
to happen with that disciplinary hearing he's going to have
on September thirtieth, but is going to be a multi
(27:46):
game suspension.
Speaker 12 (27:47):
Hollywood Brown has got to stay healthy.
Speaker 17 (27:49):
He missed fourteen games last year and that was a
big boat of what they were hoping to accomplish with
his deep speed. Upside here right now with Xavier Worthy
has looked very good in camp. He's shown a lot
of maturation running, and Taekwon Thorton has them nerved as
a surprise third fourth receiver, a guy didn't work out
in New England, but it's showing progress, so Baldy a
lot of high hopes here, but they got to keep
(28:10):
these guys together.
Speaker 12 (28:12):
And I think along with that, Jeff, I agree with
everything you just said.
Speaker 11 (28:16):
There is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and nobody week
to week designs offense like Andy Reid.
Speaker 12 (28:22):
That's gonna help.
Speaker 11 (28:23):
But more importantly, they've got to make sure this offensive
line is fixed because it wasn't good last year. You're
looking at Kingsley Suomatatia at left guard, Josh Simmons at
left tackle, young guys drafted high. If they get their
offensive line together, If Mahomes can do what Andy Reid
wants to do to get five guys out in the route,
you're going to get more opportunities to get the ball
(28:45):
down the field.
Speaker 12 (28:46):
We may see Jared.
Speaker 11 (28:46):
Wiley, the young tight end, Robert Tanyan, who's on the
roster mound.
Speaker 12 (28:50):
You know ty Taekwon Thornton. He's got four two eight speed.
Speaker 11 (28:54):
I think we might see more explosion in the offense
if Patch Mahomes feels like he can be better for
two and so that's one of the things I'm looking
for in this preseason.
Speaker 12 (29:04):
The starting group has.
Speaker 11 (29:05):
Been playing a lot, so I want to see how
much more they can improve before they get to the
start of the season.
Speaker 9 (29:12):
That was certainly the theme of the offseason, fixing that
offensive line. But they spent a second and a third
round draft pick on defensive lineman. What's the early report
on those rookies, Jeffrey.
Speaker 17 (29:23):
Well, so far, it's a little bit mixed because Omar
Norman Lott was the second round pick, a defensive tackle
who is going to be a big rotational piece keeping
dealing with an ankle injury. But they like what they've
seen so far of him. He was not playing. He
played about half the snap to Tennessee, but he's going
to have a larger role with the Chiefs. And Asson
Gelatti at edge rusher, who's a third round pick, is
(29:44):
a lot like George carloftis a grinder, gets after it
really makes things happen. But the key thing and Judy,
they got to find a way to get more out
of his pass rush. They had fifty seven sacks two
years ago when they won the Super Bowl, only thirty
nine last year. And Baldy so much as asked if
Chris Jones the other guys have got to step in
and get it done too.
Speaker 11 (30:03):
I agree, you know, they haven't been very good so
far in the two preseason games they played.
Speaker 12 (30:08):
They haven't gotten much pressure. But I do agree that, you.
Speaker 11 (30:12):
Know, it can't just be Chris Jones and Karloftis and
Mike Dana at times. I mean, these young guys, you
can't you don't want to give him a.
Speaker 12 (30:19):
Red shirt year, but it does take time for some of.
Speaker 11 (30:21):
These guys that developed, and they need these guys that developed,
They need the depth that Steve Spagnola wants to rotate
through to get them through seventeen games, to get them
to the postseason. And so they're going to have to
find something. They can't just scheme these guys open all
the time. There's too much that you put on your
secondary to hold up when Spags wants to do that.
(30:42):
So I'm looking for the development of some of the
young guys, along with Jerry Tillery who they brought in
this year, who you know, there's been mixed reviews about
what he's done so far, what he's done in his career,
but he is a former number one draft pick. Felix
Uzama Nuda Ka, like, you know, we got to see
something from him.
Speaker 12 (30:59):
He's the first round PA.
Speaker 11 (31:00):
It's time for some of these guys to kind of
step up and be counted on if they're going to
be part of this team again.
Speaker 9 (31:08):
Just seventeen days until the Chiefs start to try to
avenge that Super Bowl loss. Jeffrey Baldi, thank you very much.
Coming up next Fantasy quarterbacks, cheat code Quarterbacks. Our buddy
Michael f Florio is going to be here to talk
about those guys, look at some of these star players
and their passes. When we return on The Insiders presented
(31:30):
by best Buy.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
Annevil Fantasy Live is back six pm Eastern Time tomorrow.
Big question on that show, what are your wide receiver
draft dilemmas? I might have to apply to that tweet
because I've got a few myself, or I could just
ask on this next guest right here on The Insiders
preda by best Buy, Michael f Florio about those things.
Let's focus though, first on super flex leagues. Florio, I'm
(31:58):
in one of those. I'm in the est movie auction
of all time right now involving that league. Just explain
what that is and maybe some of the cheap code
quarterbacks that people should be plugging in to try to
fill that extra spot.
Speaker 18 (32:12):
Superflex is my personal favorite format in fantasy because in
all one QB leagues everyone just waits on quarterback. But
in superflex it's not quite two quarterbacks, but you have
a spot that can be you can flex a second
quarterback or if say your guys on buy are injured,
you don't need a third quarterback necessarily. You could put
(32:33):
a running back, a wide receiver, a tight end. But
it really takes and includes a lot of strategy, I
should say, at the quarterback position, because you can't just
wait right like the first five picks in a super
flex draft will probably be all quarterbacks, and you could
wait maybe to like the third or fourth round. I
did that in a league of my own, waited to
the fourth round, got Kyler and Goff.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
But you want to get those cheat codes, and look,
the running quarterbacks are the cheat codes.
Speaker 18 (33:01):
It's why Alan, Lamar and Jaden are the top three
quarterbacks off the board in every draft. But if you
wait a little bit, justin Fields could be a cheat
code for you without having to pay that really high price.
Fields is one of three quarterbacks to ever run for
one thousand yards. He also holds the quarterback record for
most rushing yards in a game, so we know week
(33:22):
to week, season to season, his upside.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Is very high.
Speaker 18 (33:26):
And I'm expecting a Fields push push in New York.
This is gonna sound crazy, but I think Fields is
the only quarterback who could potentially run for one thousand
and double digit touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
And then Kyler Murray, who.
Speaker 18 (33:38):
Is being punished for not living up to the lofty
expectations that fantasy managers put on him last year. Remember
who was still need to pass them for Jada though,
but he had the second most rushing yards of his
career last year, still brings top five upside. Yet he
is being drafted at QB nine, which is closer to
his floor, which.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Last year he was the QB ten. So I really like.
Speaker 18 (33:59):
Getting that disc out on Kyler because people aren't upset
at Kyler, They're upset at the price they paid for.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
Kyvin last year.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
Two hundred dollars salary cap league. I'm feeling really good
about keeping Justin Fields at ten bucks in that league.
And yes it is super flys. All right, let's talk
about some of the new play callers. Tana Ringstrand is
one right there with the Jets. As you look at
the impact some of those guys might have, what jumps out.
Speaker 18 (34:21):
I mean Ben Johnson was the most coveted play caller
for a reason. I am ecstatic about what he could
mean for the Bears. DeAndre Swift is a huge winner
as every year Johnson was in Detroit they finished top
two in the NFL and goal line carries to their
running backs.
Speaker 8 (34:36):
We know he will throw to the backs plenty.
Speaker 18 (34:39):
Caleb, I think, is a breakout candidate, biggest winner of
the offseason between what they did with the O line
and getting Johnson. But what I really love, and we've
seen it in the preseason. He's gonna move his pieces
all around the field. We've seen Rome with Dunsay in
the slot, more in the backfield. I think all of
them more as the top fifteen wide receiver for me,
Dounza's in my top thirty.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
And then in Vegas.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
I this might be a spicy take.
Speaker 18 (35:02):
I'm a little worried about the pass game there because
Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly loved to run the ball.
There was an eight year stretch in Seattle where Pete
Carroll six times finished top three in rushing attempts. Chip
Kelly's offenses have finished top seven in three of the
four years he's been in the NFL, and Carol just
loves to like muck games up, have them lower scoring,
control the clock. I think that is awesome for Ashton Genty,
(35:24):
But the Raiders last year were top ten and pass
play percentage because they.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Were trailing so much. I don't think they're.
Speaker 18 (35:30):
Gonna throw as much as they did last year, which
is why I'm not going to be the person drafting
Brock Bauers in the early second round or Jacoby Myers
like I'm gonna let other people have those Raiders, but
I'll take Ashton Genty all day.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
I mentioned that very slow moving draft that I made.
It's a long term salary cap keeper. Lee first player
proposed to as a restricted free agent was Daniel Jones.
Anybody who's had a player on the ross for three
years gets the right to match well. In the midst
of the binning on Daniel Jezes, I reported the news
that David Jones has been named the starter for the
(36:04):
Colt's just one problem. Everybody already put in their bids
at one dollar. The guy then got a chance to match,
which for out Buck was a pretty good deal. It
does raise some potential questions, though from an ethical perspective,
as we bring back in Ian Rappaport and Mike Garafolo. Mike,
what is your position on insiders using their inside knowledge
(36:25):
in the midst of a fantasy draft.
Speaker 18 (36:28):
Well, I'm not an insider a little bit, never have
any insider information, so.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
I can't break on that.
Speaker 10 (36:35):
But we are and a lot of times it gets
a little bit hairy because you may find out on
a Wednesday that there's an injury. This guy's not going
to play this week, maybe he's out for a while,
and you know his backup is available, and if it's
past the waiver part of it, so like I could
pick him up right away. It's bad form to do
it and then report. But the question is, like, do
(36:57):
I have to give it five minutes? Can I report
and then immediately go get it because you could get
the alert just as quickly as I could put it
out there.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
I don't know. It's it's a little bit of a
gray area.
Speaker 7 (37:08):
It's not a gray area at all. And I disagree
with everything you just said. I remember when I was
about to report that Tony Romo was going to be
out an extended period of time with a back injury,
and Dak Prescott was going to be the starter, and
I drafted Dak.
Speaker 8 (37:22):
Prescott and then hit send on a tweet.
Speaker 7 (37:24):
I also once picked up Matthew Stafford's backup quarterback, knowing
that he was going to miss the game with a
back injury that knocked him out about a month.
Speaker 8 (37:31):
They know who I am, they know what I do.
It's all fair.
Speaker 7 (37:35):
I also don't usually win, so I'm not even that
good anyway, so I don't care.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
No, no, no, this is the best everything.
Speaker 11 (37:43):
I got.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Another one coming up this weekend. Is just making little
comments when people ask me about things like hey, oh,
he's gonna be fine, right that player, And I'm like,
I don't know, which could mean anything?
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Do I actually know something? Do I not?
Speaker 8 (37:56):
But it sits in the back of their brains while
the draft.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
Is going on.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
I like to psychological warfare aspect of this. In hindsight,
I should have stalled like thirty minutes and then put
it in a two dollars bit.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
On Daniel Jones to see what happened all right.
Speaker 10 (38:13):
Time for Upgrade your Game Day presented by best Buy Jeffrey, Jadea,
Brian Baldinger going to upgrade your game day along with me,
Mike garrafollow We're going to talk about teams that might
come out of the gate a little bit hotter than
some folks may expect. We're going to start with you, Jeffrey.
Who's that team that you know week one into the
early part of the season might get off to a
strong start.
Speaker 17 (38:33):
I'm going with the forty nine ers, And I feel
a little bit concerned about picking a team that went
to the CHAN won the championship in the NFC last
year two years ago, but you look at their schedule,
the easiest schedule in football. Mike, you're talking about team
that's going to see the Seattle. They're gonna see New Orleans.
We're gonna see the Cardinals, We're gonna see the Jaguars
in the first four weeks. So I love their odds.
I'm coming out of coming out with a four and
(38:54):
oh start, But also the last two times they finished
with double digit losses, they've come back strong. And eighteen
they were four and twelve.
Speaker 5 (39:02):
They made the Super Bowl.
Speaker 17 (39:03):
In twenty twenty they were six and ten, they made
the Fantasy championship game, Baldy, I love this pick.
Speaker 11 (39:10):
You know it's interesting, Jeff, because the forty nine ers
play in Seattle Week one, and you know you've already
given San Francisco the w Okay. I can't think the
other way. Seattle did win ten games last year. They
did finish sixty two down the stretch. They do have
a coordinator, an offensive coordinator that actually does have a
clue about the NFL, in Clint Kubiak. And you know
(39:32):
they drafted this left guard, you know, and it left
guards are people too, let's face it. But great is able.
I just call him Abel's able, like the whole team,
just like everybody wants to run behind him. Quarterbacks runs,
quarterbacks sneaks behind him. They they look good offense. They
just ran for sixty sixty eight yards against Kansas City
the other night.
Speaker 12 (39:51):
I get it.
Speaker 11 (39:51):
It's preseason that rob us put tight end at Alabama,
like he's going to have a role. A Royal is
going to have a role. I like what Seattle's do
and I think Mike McDonald's defense of the second year.
I think they're gonna be a lot better this year.
The installation took a while last year. But I think
they know where they're supposed to be now. I'm looking
forward this defense to take a big jump, and therefore
(40:13):
I like Seattle to kind of sneak up on a
lot of people, including yourself there.
Speaker 10 (40:17):
Jeff, Okay, wow, money is gonna be wrong at least
when it comes to Week one. I mean, whoever's wrong
week one could win the next three games, and Technavy
you might be right about the early part of the season.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
I do like the Nighters. I'm with you, Jeff Tod
I do like the Seahawks as well. I'm with you, Baldi.
So great job, both of you guys. Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
Another action packed weekend of pre season football coming up
on NFL Network. All starts on Thursday night, two nights
from right now with the Steelers and the Panthers. You
got Falcons Cowboys on Friday, and then these Saturday quadruple header.
Maybe a little more Schadur Sanders going up against the Rams.
Could we see Travis Hunter back against the Dolphins, wraps
(40:59):
up Raiders, Cardinals, and then all the fun ahead cut
down Day, trades and a whole lot more action. In
the meantime, Djmore are definitely not getting cut and turning
his sneaker collection into something really good.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
He's got eighty high end.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
New or gently used sneakers right now and the Bears
app all proceeds benefiting Bears Care, proceeds of which go
to Breast cancer Research. Welcome Back to the Insiders, presented
by Best Buy, Tom Pilliicero, Ian Rappaport, Judy Batista.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Mike Garafolo.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
My custom air Force ones last year sold for four
to ten dollars to raise money for the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Thank you for whoever bought those.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Ian, I understand you couldn't figure out how to get
your shoes listed.
Speaker 7 (41:42):
It's not that I couldn't figure out. These are for
the Kids and Needs Foundation. By the way, kids you
need foundation. These are awesome.
Speaker 8 (41:48):
I love them. I need to put them up for auctions.
Speaker 7 (41:49):
So I think I'm gonna do that and maybe it'll
benefit some people that needed.
Speaker 8 (41:54):
Probably a little more than us idiots.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
What would you bet on those, Judy.
Speaker 9 (42:01):
Well, it's going to charity, so I would been a lot.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
But I don't really want Ian sneakers. I would then
give them to somebody else.
Speaker 10 (42:06):
I haven't worn them, likely gently or heavily worn don't
want them, but they look nice.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Jobby don't want them. We've all seen they're cool. They're
perpetually dirty. It doesn't really work, and he doesn't seem
to understand that those look pretty clean though see
