Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's July twenty second, and boy does it feel like football.
Twenty six teams reporting to training camp around the NFL.
Justin Field's in the building, Russell Wilson, Joe Burrow, Rock
Parties in the House, Gino Smith, and so many more.
We got a lot of news to get to, so
(00:28):
let's get to it right now. Welcome inside with the
insiders alongside Ian Rappaport, Judy Matista, and Mike Carrafollo.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I am Tom Pelisero.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Forty four days out now from the twenty twenty five
season opener, just.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Nine days away from the Hall of Fame game.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
That's how close you are to watching live football on
TV or in person. We will get to as many
of those twenty six teams reporting to training camp as
we possibly can over the next sixty minutes. But let's
start with one team that hit the practice field were
the first time today. That is the Dallas Cowboys in
their usual training camp home of Oxnard, California.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
A little bit of a new look.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Brian Schottenheimer the visors on backward good way to make
sure that your neck does not end up getting burnt.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
That is the least of his concerns.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
A lot of other moving parts for the Cowboys, and
for more on that, let's head out to Oxnard right
now with our Jane Slater. Jane, the story on Monday
was Jerry Jones saying a lot of things, which Jerry
tends to do the Monday of training camp week. This
day you had a couple of players get a chance
to respond. What'd you learn?
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Yeah, Jerry Jones had a lot to say about both
Micah Parsons and trey Von Diggs, both here for day
one of practice, albeit in different roles. Let's start with Diggs.
He starts to see the camp off rather on the
pup list. Remember he sustained yet another injury to that
left last season and he is rehabbing it. As for Parsons,
(01:58):
he wants that contract extension, but Brian Schottenheimer's head coach,
because says that he will do quote different versions of participation.
I thought it important as they were coming off the
field to day to get in their own words where
things stand with the owner and the front office.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Because it's not like I'm not putting the work in
doing everything I was supposed to do. Of course, they
do a great job here, but you know, I just
thought it was for my best interest to you knows
where else to rehab for my off season, but it's unfortunate.
You know, By the end of the day, hopefully I'll
make it back.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Where are you in your reheab process.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
I feel real good. I'm doing everything so I'm supposed
to do. I feel real good. I'm ahead of schedule.
So yeah, I feel good.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Micah. Good to see you out here. Why was it
a choice for you to be I would are you
a holding at this point or are you just being
mindful of your body?
Speaker 5 (02:54):
Just being mindful obviously, just want to get the body
going the right way, the way I wanted to. But
you know, I see what d log going. Like I said,
I just felt like it was my turn, my turn
and lead, and it's hard to do that from the crib.
So I want to be here with the guys, show
them that I care. I want to be here win championship.
So that's why I'm here.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
You know, I know you and Jerry have a pretty
close relationship, and I know you have respect for each other.
But stuff gets said in the media. Have you had
a conversation with him after yesterday's presser?
Speaker 5 (03:20):
No, But I'm I'm gonna talk to him. You know,
I just thought as a whole, like, you know, everyone's
situation is differently, you know what I mean. At the
end of the day, Like, I'm here for my teammates,
you know, I'm not here to please another grown man.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
I'm here for them.
Speaker 7 (03:36):
You know.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
I want to be here with Trey, watching rehab, watching
you on the field, watch his growth. I want to
be here battle with Chren still, like I'm here for
these guys. I'm not here for him, you know. So
I think, you know, I think, end of the day,
he's on the field with us. You know, we're on
the field playing the games and things like that. So
I'm gonna just control my teammates, keep boosting it and uh,
you know, we're just gonna keep playing together.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Last question for you guys. Energy is a word we're
using a lot out here. Do you guys feel it
with this coaching staff.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Definitely, it's a lot of energy. I love the atmosphere.
Everyone's competing, everyone's happy, everyone's in a good mood. Everyone's smiling,
and were ready to get this show on the road.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
And you want to be here, of course.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Of course I do.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Yeah, I need my second here, man.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I need them.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
I'm whatever he owned. If they don't want me to here,
they don't want me here, I'll go about my business.
I understand the nature of the business. Like I said,
as long as I'm getting an under contract, I'm gonna
do what I can do to perform at the highest level.
But if this is, then this is then you know,
there's there's same way to Jones, Jerry Jones and Stephen
Jones and ever Jerry Jones take care of their family.
It's the same way I need to take care of
(04:38):
my family, you know what I mean.
Speaker 8 (04:39):
I got my own three.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
Kids of my own, So we all need to take
care of our own family at the end of the day.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
And as we wait, it's our understanding according to Bikah
that his agent has reached out to Jerry Jones. He's
just waiting for a callback.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Cowboys Eagles forty four days away September fourth, in Philadelphia,
Should I repeat, should have answers on some of these
items before we get there, Jane, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
More from you. A little bit later on in the show,
Cowboys don't only have.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
To hunt down the Eagles, they got to come after
the commanders. One of the surprise teams in twenty twenty
four an NFC Championship game appearance.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Looking to build on that would certainly help.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
If spotted within this montage was Terry mclaurino wants a
new contract. Here's what GM Adam Peters had to say
about his top wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, without a doubt.
Speaker 9 (05:30):
I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,
and we knew that coming in, and we knew that
even more after spending a year with him. In terms
of where we're at, We've had conversations recently, and we'll
look to have some more conversations, and we're going to
do everything we can in order to get a deal done.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
So the commanders obviously have known ian about this situation
for quite some time.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Here.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
If you're Terry McLaurin, you're saying the deal I did
several years ago now has been out pace by the market.
I've been healthy, I've been productive, Give me my money.
How does this play out from here? At a time
the Terry McLaurin, at least at the start off camp
here is staying away.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
First the news part.
Speaker 10 (06:13):
Terry McLaurin was not present with his teammates during today's
conditioning test, setting the stage for unless there is some
sort of contractual breakthrough over the next twenty four hours.
A holdout and holdouts have been increasingly rare over the
last several years. Hold Ins where a player deals with
a minor injury while not practicing waiting for his deal
(06:34):
to get done, that's been more commonplace. But a true holdout,
where a player is subject to fines, those have been rare.
But that is how Terry McLaurin is showing these commanders
that he is not happy, that he does not feel
good about where things are, and not only does he
want a new deal, but he wants a lot of money.
And you're right, the three year, sixty eight million dollar
deal that hasn't making almost twenty million dollars this year
(06:56):
has been out paced. My understanding is he wants more
than thirty It's not a disagreement over whether he deserves
more money, it's a disagreement over how much. And certainly
they are not there yet to term McLaurin staying away, and.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
There are still buttons. The term McLaurin could push. You
could always request the trade. You could show up and
try to make people uncomfortable. Brandon Ayuk tried all those
things with the forty nine Ers last fall and ultimately
ended up staying in San Francisco. He also suffered a
significant injury, which was kind of the story of Rock
Party season. No Christian McCaffrey, no wide receivers. It was
(07:33):
a tough year all around for the forty nine ers.
Here we are, Mike a year later, while there's not
a contracts squabble for San Francisco, there's real questions again
about who party's gonna be thrown to.
Speaker 11 (07:43):
Yeah, it was an Aco NCL injury for Brandon Ayuk
and John Lynch today saying that he's nowhere close to
having a concrete timeline for his return. I think a
lot of folks looked at that and said, whoa, he's
that far away, And Linz said, no, we are encouraged
by his progress. But my understanding is now that he's
in the building, now they're going to see him every
(08:03):
day at training camp, how he is rehabbing, then they'll
understand kind of sort of where he is at this point.
But it is looking at this point like you can't
rule out week one for Brandon Ayuk, but it would
be an uphill battle for him to get to that point,
because if you don't have that concrete timeline, there's really
no ramp up period to get himself into game shape.
So it seems like the four nat are going to
(08:24):
begin the season without Ayuk. But again, there is some
good signs here with regard to his rehab and his
recovery and the possibility.
Speaker 8 (08:32):
Of him being back at least early in the season.
Speaker 11 (08:34):
If he starts on the pup list, he'll be ineligible
for the first four weeks.
Speaker 8 (08:37):
The good news.
Speaker 11 (08:38):
Ricky Piersall had a hamstring injury beginning on puff, but
the hope is that he is back to action relatively so.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Kyle Shanaan once again beginning training camp wondering who he's
drawing a place to get open another familiar storyline in
the NFC West, Matthew Stafford once again dealing with injury
in the early portion of camp. It did not, in
fact occur when he was rear ended by Pooka Nakula
who I had to show up on a go kart
right there. Stafford, though, is dealing with back Sorenis Judy,
(09:05):
which would seem like a minor type of a thing here,
but we also know one thing with Stafford, he'll play
through things, but he also deals with a lot. What
do you make of Sean mcfay say today that at
least for the first five days or so of camp
we may not see a whole lot of Matthew Stafford.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
On the field.
Speaker 12 (09:22):
Well, I thought it was important that McVeigh was willing
to put the five day timeline on it. That suggested
that they do not believe this is very serious and
something that is going to carry deep into training camp.
We will see if that's accurate, but I think at
least initially, it seems like they believe this is a
minor nuisance. Having said that it's a starting quarterback, a
(09:44):
thirty seven year old starting quarterback with BACKSRNAS, so certainly
at the very least that demand's monitoring. They did get
some good news though, running back Karen Williams, who is
looking for a new contract. He is in the final
year of his rookie deal, so is at camp and
plans to participate. He said, I love this, this is
what I do, so he plans to be part of
(10:06):
training camp. That is the good news for the Rams.
You have really high hopes, really positive feelings coming out
of an offseason in which they added Davante Adams to
pair with Kouka and Aakubu, who you saw coming in
on that go kart. They went unexpectedly far last year,
and they pushed the Eagles further than anybody did in
the playoffs last season. So certainly this is a team
(10:27):
on an upward trajectory, which is why Matthew Stafford's back
is going to be something we are going to be
watching very closely.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
The Bills also reporting today amidst at least some level
of uncertainty about their star running back James Cook, who
had twenty one touchdowns including the playoffs last season, helping
out the league MVP Josh Allen in a lot of ways,
is on hand as the Bills report to training camp
here Ian, but James Cook still expects to get paid.
He's doing about five point three million dollars this year.
(10:57):
What do you make of the timeline of a potential
James Cook extension sometime in camp here?
Speaker 10 (11:03):
Well, first of all, this is the same James Cook
that went basically public last year saying he wants fifteen
million dollars, which would put him close to the top
of the running back market. And what the Bills did
in response to that, and something the Bills we're trying
to do anyway, was basically take care of every other
young player that they wanted to sign. And it has
been unbelievably productive offseason for the Buffalo Bills, right.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
I mean they have locked up Greg Russeau and Christian.
Speaker 10 (11:30):
Benford, and I mean on and on defensive players who
have been really helpful to them to kind of build
this to build this roster, just not James Cook yet,
which really does set the stage for a contract negotiation
that either should go down to the wire toward the
start of the season or put him on path to
either hit free agency next year or get the franchise tag.
(11:51):
There's gonna be a lot of contractual talks surrounding James Cook,
but most importantly on the field, as he has emerged
as an absolute essential weapon for the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Jonathan Taylor went through a similar situation with the Colts
a couple of years ago.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Here one of the top backs in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
But who exactly is going to be the quarterback for
those Indianapolis Colts. They have Daniel Jones, of course, who
they signed in free agency former Giant starter finished up
last season with the Vikings. They've also got Anthony Richardson,
who once again dealt with an injury to his throwing shoulder.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Back in the spring. But it sounds like GM Chris.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Ballard is optimistic about Richardson's chances for competing in camp.
Speaker 13 (12:35):
All right, so Anthony is good to go. He's been
throwing for about three weeks now. He's really uped his volume.
First couple of weeks. Will probably limit some volume, but
no real restrictions other than volume restrictions, and that's something
we'll keep. You know, we have a four day stretch
where we're practicing four days in a row, So this
first week you could see in day two or three
(12:56):
a little bit of volume. We reduced his volume, but
other than that, good to go.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
It was not that long ago, Mike, that Anthony richardshow
was the number four overall pick in the NFL draft
At this point, just based on availability alone, you'd have
to say the edge that this goes to Daniel Jones
in that competition.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
What say you?
Speaker 11 (13:17):
Daniel Jones got that advantage there, Tom In the spring,
the late spring when the Colts shuts down shut down,
Anthony Richardson for a mini camp, so they gave Jones
a chance to make a final first impression there during
the spring, and it seems like it was a good one.
I know that there's a lot of optimism when it
comes to Daniel Jones' ability to reset now with the
Indianapolis Colts. Things did not end very well with the
(13:38):
Giants and that stint with the Vikings that was kind
of weird. He never really saw the field there. So
now he's got a clearer path to a starting job.
He's got to edge out Anthony Richardson from an availability standpoint,
You're right, the edge goes to Jones because at least
there is going to be a little bit of a
restriction or at least a watch on Richardson to start
(13:59):
training camp. But if he's healthy, he's got to show
won the wow plays. We know they're there.
Speaker 8 (14:03):
We've seen them.
Speaker 11 (14:04):
Remember last week or last year. Excuse me in Week one,
the wild play that he made early on. But it's
got to be more from a consistency standpoint, because you
know you're going to get more consistency from Jones when
it comes to this battle.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
And the wild plays have often turned into owl plays
so far for Anthony Richardson, a player who certainly has,
as you said, Mike, all the physical ability, but has
not yet been able to stay healthy enough to actually
be able to mount those reps. Joe Burrow has dealt
with his fair share of training camp injuries in the
past as well, but fully healthy, looking good in whatever
(14:37):
he's wearing right there. His guy knows better than I do.
A little tidy, how about that from Joe Burrow. He's
on hand in Cincinnati, not there, not even in the state.
Trey Hendrickson, who posted this very early this morning amidst
ongoing contract talks judy between the Bengals and Hendrickson, who's
due sixteen million dollars this season, He's made clear he's
(14:58):
not going to play for that. The those have offered
him a raise, they've offered him an extension, but the
structure is not there and there's really no at this point.
Speaker 12 (15:06):
And in sight, yeah, that was maybe a bit of
a reality check today after some optimism from owner Mike
Brown yesterday that the deal would get done with Trey Hendrickson,
maybe not quite so fast. And that's certainly a down
note for a team that has focused the entire offseason
on figuring out how to get out to faster starts.
They paid a lot of money to keep most of
(15:28):
their offense intact. They didn't do much for the defense.
They changed defensive coordinators, and now they've got the Trey
Hendrickson and Schmer Stewart contract situations still out there hanging
over them. The good news for them, Joe Burrow comes
into training camp healthy for the first time in a
long time. That is a good first step toward getting
off to a fast start, but certainly getting these contract
(15:50):
situations squared away, and they hope getting both guys into
camp would certainly go a long way toward a faster start.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
We've got tons more to come on the show. Twenty
other teams we haven't even mentioned.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
Yet also reported to training camp earlier today, including the Dolphins.
Tyreek Kill says he's healthy, he's got some new perspective,
he's got thoughts on one of our reporters physiques.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
You do not want to miss it.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
The Dolphins one of twenty six teams to report to
training camps around the NFL today, which means.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
You guessed it.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
A lot of slow motion entry shots for two of
Toungola and others. Some new faces and old faces in
Miami where Tyreek Kill once again is back.
Speaker 14 (16:37):
Football is all about winning, winning games, you know, being
there for your team and those big moments, you know,
those crucial downs like third down and he's being available
man for my team man two thousand. I feel like
that's just a personal goal that I would like for myself.
But I feel like the even bigger goal for myself
(16:59):
and then I'll so for this team is just to
win games, you know, win playoff games, and you know,
continue to build from now.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
I expect to bring playmaking ability. There's a lot of
guys on this team that can do amazing things with
the ball. I'm excited to just be a part of
that group. I feel like everything you probably experience, except
probably winning the Super Bowl, is something that I've gone through.
Where there's been drafted, late course, special teams, guys suspended
from the league, practice squad starter pro Bowler traded a
couple of times like there are guys that are going
(17:27):
through situations and going through things that they need somebody
to lean on talk to. I feel like I could
be that as well, but most importantly, just somebody that
does their job at a high level.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Let's bring in our Cameron Wolf who was down there
at Dolphins training camp earlier today. Welcome back to the insiders,
Tom Pilaicero and Ian rapport Camp. Let's start with Tyreek
who had a lot going on off the field, on
the field, medically and otherwise last year. You hear him
talking there about big goals like two thousand yards, being
a better leader, knowing him as well as you do,
(18:00):
how you making, what he's saying, and what we can
expect to see in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 15 (18:04):
Yeah, Tyreek Hill's message all offseason has been one of
us accountability. He knews how bad he was last year
with asking I'm out, with saying, you know, leaving the
game in the fourth quarter without coming back in, and
so he's showing the level of accountability of I'm going
to be different. And he told us a story in
the press conference today. He said he talked to his
(18:25):
dad and said, I wonder what it to look like
on the field if I just focused on football and family.
He said, I haven't done that. I haven't given the
best version of Tyreek Hill my entire career.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
I plan to do that.
Speaker 15 (18:36):
He's down to one hundred and eighty three pounds fourteen
pounds from when he first got down here to Miami.
Speaker 8 (18:41):
He said he's been training.
Speaker 15 (18:43):
He said his focus points are being on time, which
was a problem last year, being present, being available, showing
the fullness of his leadership vocally, and as far as
his conditioning after practice.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
And he really is getting a little bit motivation from
his kids.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
He said.
Speaker 15 (18:57):
One of his kids, he FaceTime with them last night
and his mom told him that he told his friend
that his dad was not Tyreek Hill, his dad was
Justin Jefferson because he's a big Justin Jefferson fan. So
he said that gives me extra motivation. My own son says,
I'm Justin Jefferson's dad. He said, we'll tell Justin Jefferson
to take you to Disneyland then if he's your dad.
So even Tyreek Hill has his sons wanted to be
(19:20):
someone else.
Speaker 10 (19:22):
I mean, if Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson gonna go
to Disneyland, I think we're gonna need some cameras there
to witness this. Anyway, let's get on to Darren Waller,
we just heard from just a couple of minutes ago.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
Obviously one of.
Speaker 10 (19:35):
The more intriguing stories for the Miami Dolphins. Comes out
of retirement to land in South Florida. What do we
expect from Waller in his return to the NFL.
Speaker 15 (19:47):
Yeah, the Dolphins are taking a flyer on Darren Waller here.
He retired from football. He told us today that he's
content until retirement. He said he had decided that football
wasn't something at that time that he wanted to pursue.
He didn't have that joy, that spark.
Speaker 8 (20:01):
He said.
Speaker 15 (20:01):
Over the last few months he's thought about it. He
got some of that joy back, and he said he's committed.
And I asked him about that point, because when he
left the game, he said he didn't have that commitment.
He said, he knows this is a commitment.
Speaker 8 (20:13):
Smith to February.
Speaker 15 (20:14):
He expects to make a huge impact.
Speaker 8 (20:16):
On the field.
Speaker 15 (20:17):
He said, what a way for me to try to
end out my final chapter of my career the way
I wanted to be. The Dolphins didn't invest a lot
of money in this tight end, and so really this
is a situation where if they can get him to
do a fraction of production that John Eus Smith, who
they traded away to Pittsburgh last year, would be able
to get some of those reps that tyreek Hill and
jal and Waddell don't have. It's across the middle of
(20:38):
the field. They'd be very happy. One key thing for
Darren Waller he reunites with Frank Smith, who was his
guy with the Raiders. He said he was a guy
who helped me when I decided I wanted to be sober.
He asked me as a man, what do I need
in my sobriety journey? And he said, I will never
forget that. He also got rave reviews from Alec Ingle,
who's a captain and full back on this team.
Speaker 8 (21:00):
They're excited about what he can do.
Speaker 15 (21:02):
Obviously a lot of eyeballs on what his mindset is like,
but he is saying the right things. He'll start training
camp on pup as they ease him back into the work.
Not injury related, just the guy who hadn't been on
the football field in a while, but he's ready to
get to action once the season starts.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Doesn't tell me it'll be anything long term for Darren Waller.
Not a big concern there. You know who else I'm
not concerned about is Cam Wolf because based on the
mirror Jim selfies, I've been.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Seeing of late.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
I gotta say, Cam's looking like he's in that pre
training camp shape right there. You know the classic line
about I'm in the best shape of my life. Cam
Wolf can say that today. In fact, he doesn't even
have to say it. Tyreek Hill will say it for him.
Speaker 16 (21:45):
Cam.
Speaker 14 (21:45):
I've been watching the workout videos.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
You look good, Bro. Trying to catch you.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Bro, I didn't even know you was in here. I'll
tell you, like, ask him a question. I'm like, oh no,
he big time now sitting in the back.
Speaker 14 (22:00):
Low key, keep doing your things, baby.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
So no pressure on you right here. Cam. You know
this is a guy in Tyreek Hill who likes to
likes to post his own videos of him working out here.
Now you know he's uh, now you know he's watching.
Speaker 15 (22:16):
Yeah, there's an old saying train like no one's watching.
I guess I'll train now like Tyreek Hill is watching.
I didn't know he was watching the videos. I thought
it was just me and my wife and my mom
was watching the videos. But apparently Tyreek Hill is as well.
I do not have any plays left, I promise you.
I have no football plays left. Just jim work. That's
(22:37):
all I have.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Oh no, we know we know Tyreek Hill the cheetah
we are now from now, I'm gonna call you Cam
big cat Wolf.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
How about that?
Speaker 1 (22:46):
I like wolf and and a cat right, It's like
a combination. Anyway, Cam, thank you very much. We will
talk to you again soon. Play twenty five NFL season
begins with training camp starting Saturday, July twenty sixth or Wednesday,
August sixth, continuing tomorrow. NFL Network is your home for
wall to wall coverage from every camp around the league.
We're live on the field, bringing you exclusive interviews, expert analysis,
(23:09):
breaking storylines, and your first look at the biggest names
in new places. Do miss inside training camp all day,
every day on NFL Network. We will certainly see plenty
of Caleb Williams when we get to those inside training
camp shows. Will year two be better for than Bears
and Williams? Then year one? We'll break that down our
(23:31):
Stacey Dales joins us from Chicago right after this on
The Insiders.
Speaker 11 (23:45):
New Today, the Bears reporting for training camp. I think
Kayleb Williams on Draft Night, if I recall correctly, made
the claw a thing and everybody's like the Bears have
been around for one hundred years and Caleb Williams just
now making a new thing. So there's Cairo Santos channeling
the quarterback.
Speaker 8 (24:02):
Of the president and future that is Caleb Williams.
Speaker 11 (24:05):
And here is the coach of the future, now the
coach of the president, a guy everybody was after the
last couple.
Speaker 8 (24:09):
Of years the Bears landed. I'm Ben Jonson.
Speaker 17 (24:13):
As I think about our team and where we're going
into training camp, it's really there are a lot of
parallels there because as a first time head coach, first
year head coach, a lot of new staff members on
the coaching staff, a lot of new faces in the
locker room. We we don't know each other particularly well,
and we've tried to bridge that gap over the course
of the spring. But really the next six weeks is
(24:35):
about us coming together.
Speaker 16 (24:37):
I've had some up and downs and games myself and
team wise, and so you know, I think, I think
all of you know, all of last year was was
great for us and great for me to be able
to manage, you know, these these next six weeks, about
six weeks, you know, I think it's gonna be fun too.
That's the that's the fun part about it is having
these up and downs and figuring out a way to
manage those and and and deal with them and you know,
(24:57):
come back the next day or next play or you know,
trive next situation that we have and you go out
there and execute, and you know, be that guy that
and teammate that you know they depend on and believe
in for those moments.
Speaker 11 (25:11):
Oh, Stacy Dale's, the expectations are high surrounding this team.
I know it's a first year coach, but a lot
of times we see first year coaches take a team
to the postseason.
Speaker 8 (25:19):
Perhaps the Bears will be that team.
Speaker 11 (25:20):
So Dale's is here with us, Judy Bautista and me,
Mike Carrofalo. I heard a lot of numbers being thrown
around with Caleb Williams, and the expectations for this upcoming
season stays. These guys are not shy, whether it's Williams
himself or Ben Johnson about throwing out some numbers and
say these are the goals for the production this year.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Right.
Speaker 18 (25:42):
Absolutely, it was a great day really at Hallas Hall today.
Let's just hope that Claw can throw some darts to
the tune of seventy percent in terms of completion rate,
because that's the goal. As Ben Johnson told us, you
notice the sweat on Caleb Williams brow there.
Speaker 19 (25:57):
He had just come in from outside. We're in a
heat wave.
Speaker 18 (26:00):
It's going to be so hot tomorrow as they get
ready to practice here, and they're going to go really
early every day, eight thirty in the morning throughout training camp.
But when you talk about those numbers, you zero in
on the head coach and play caller and Ben Johnson,
Judy and Mike and the quarterback Caleb Williams.
Speaker 19 (26:15):
I loved Ben.
Speaker 18 (26:17):
Johnson's transparency today in terms of how much time they've
spent together. I asked him, what does it look like
for you in terms of how you fill your quarterback's cup,
how much you can give him, and he said, it's
all about the time.
Speaker 19 (26:29):
You spend with your quarterback.
Speaker 18 (26:30):
And so they have spent as much time as humanly
possible over the last two months, not only getting to
know each other, but really zeroing in on how they're
going to install this thing, what it's going to look like.
Not to mention that he sent Caleb Williams home with
footwork and very specifically homework, excuse me, and that was
footwork and that's getting him under center. You're going to
(26:52):
see a lot of play action. Get him under center
and get that ball out quickly. That footwork the left
foot up versus the right foot up under center so
that he can get that ball out and he's just
more efficient, better timing with his receivers. And for Caleb Williams,
he was very intentional today in terms of his goals.
Mentioned that seventy percent completion rate. That's what Ben Johnson's
(27:13):
looking for throughout practice. He said, he knows it's a
lofty goal, but that's what it is.
Speaker 19 (27:18):
For Caleb Williams, he.
Speaker 18 (27:19):
Wants the seventy He wants to be the first quarterback
in Bear's history. He said this today to throw for
four thousand yards in a season. It's never been done
in a single season.
Speaker 19 (27:28):
We'll see if he can do it.
Speaker 18 (27:29):
The member of the Bears twenty eighth in terms of
scoring offense last season, and by the way, tu Atungo
Viiloa led the league with seventy three percent at that
completion rating. So it is a big goal but certainly
attainable if he can click with Ben Johnson.
Speaker 12 (27:46):
Well, obviously there's going to be a huge spotlight on
that offense because of all the changes and because of
Caleb and Ben Johnson, but some of the spotlights should
go to the defense as well, because they obviously made
a pretty big change there. Dennis Allen is now shepherding
that defense. What kind of impact do we think that's
going to have?
Speaker 18 (28:02):
Stacey, Yeah, Judy, this is such a great point you raise.
Speaker 19 (28:08):
The Bears feel really good.
Speaker 18 (28:09):
About the staff they've assembled, and on the defensive side,
we're going to talk about the play caller a lot,
but the play caller defensively is Dennis Allen right seven.
I think seasons as DC there in New Orleans recently
and just before becoming the three year head coach with
the Saints, and you.
Speaker 19 (28:24):
Know, we had an opportunity.
Speaker 18 (28:26):
We know that he is going to impress upon us
a very physical defense up front. He wants to be
an attacking style, he wants to dictate what the offense does.
Speaker 19 (28:35):
A lot of man a lot of press coverage.
Speaker 18 (28:37):
But you know, we had the chance to speak with
Grady Jarrett today, the eleven year NFL VET joined the
Bears this offseason, spent all that time there in Atlanta
facing the team that Dennis Allen came from, in the Saints.
In that NFC South Division, so he knows him really well.
But I asked Jarrett today, what have you learned about
your defensive play caller? What are his priorities defensively? He
(29:00):
rattled off a bunch of stuff. Grittiness, his attention to detail,
his knowledge in terms of knowing what everybody should be
doing from the front to the back of the defense
and then being able to convey those expectations.
Speaker 19 (29:12):
Very clear communicator.
Speaker 18 (29:13):
To his players as they've gotten to know him here
this offseason, and he said he hasn't been babying us.
Nothing's been easy. So he's going to be tough on
these guys. But he's known as such a great players coach.
This could be an interesting fit for the former head
coach as he helps out Ben Johnson in his first
stint as head coach with these Bears.
Speaker 8 (29:33):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 11 (29:34):
He's got that experience that Ben Johnson can draw upon.
Johnson's got his own ideas, certainly has his ideas for
the offense.
Speaker 8 (29:39):
This is an exciting team this year.
Speaker 11 (29:41):
Stays and you there in Chicago and in the area,
they are going to get a front row seats and
looking forward to your coverage and back together weekend and
throughout the NFL season when it comes to the Bears
and the rest of the NFC North as well.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Tom another surprise retirement for the Saints on the eve
of training camp, a couple months after Derek Carr wah away,
now Tyron Matthew retiring after twelve seasons, three Pro Bowls,
a whole lot of big plays, thirty three years old
and leaves big shoes to fill. He released a statement saying,
in part, as I hang up my cleats, I'm filled
(30:13):
with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life
and officially retire from the game that shaped me in
every way. I hope I made you proud out there.
This isn't goodbye, It's just the next chapter for.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
The New Orleans Saints.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
They really entered a different mode once Derek Carr walked away.
Mickey Loomis even referenced that ian earlier today, saying, Derek
Carr retiring allowed us to clean up some things, basically
pay the bill for some choices they made in the past.
Now once again you got a veteran player leaving this team.
The question becomes who's the quarterback and what even is
the upside for this team in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 10 (30:48):
Yeah, certainly is shaping up to be at least a
challenging year for the New Orleans Saints, maybe a year
where you pay the bills and figure it out after.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
But don't tell that to the players competing right now
to be the starting court.
Speaker 10 (30:59):
Of of course, the most interesting here Tyler Shuck, the
second round quarterback. Rarely do you see a quarterback taking
the second round. Usually it's like first round, like fifth round.
Tyler Shuck the second rounder certainly is gonna have a
very realistic chance to be the starting quarterback for Kellen
Moore's New Orleans Saints.
Speaker 6 (31:18):
Not gonna be without a battle, though.
Speaker 10 (31:19):
Spencer Ratler, who had a ton of important snaps last
year with the Saints, a ton of experience and flashed
a bit, He is going to have a shot. Jake Hayner,
who has been the Saints backup for the last couple
of years, he also will have a shot to unseat
Tyler shock.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Well.
Speaker 12 (31:37):
Jackson Dark does not have much of a chance to
unseat Russell Wilson in training camp. The New York Giants
want Russell Wilson to be the starter when this season opens,
but training camp is going to be a good long
look at how quickly Jackson Dark can develop. He is
the rookie first round pick. They traded back into the
first round to get him. Question they are hoping to
(31:59):
answer this year is he the guy? How quickly can
he press Russell Wilson? Will they get Jackson Dart onto
the field at some point this season? Training camp is
all about getting him ready.
Speaker 11 (32:10):
Judy, you and I will be at the Giants on Sunday,
perhaps interviewing Russell Wilson. The request is in a couple
days later, I'll be in Cleveland to check out the
Browns four way competition for the starting quarterback job. I mean,
theoretically it's a two way competition between Flacco and Pickett
there on top of I mean, Deshaun Watson's on the roster, but.
Speaker 8 (32:30):
He's not gonna play for them again.
Speaker 11 (32:31):
So Flacco and Pickett with Dylan Gabriel and Schador Sanders
maybe battling for the last roster spot. Perhaps another one
winds up on the practice squad, but a chance to
really impress the front office and the coaching staff moving forward.
Speaker 8 (32:44):
We know what Flacco has done in this offense before.
Speaker 11 (32:47):
We also know that the Browns want to get back
to really running the ball effectively. The Quinn Shawn Jetkins
situation going to be an issue there.
Speaker 8 (32:54):
Obviously, we'll see how that one plays out.
Speaker 11 (32:56):
But for the meantime, Joe Flacco in the driver's seat
with Kenny Picking nipping at his heels and those young
guys trying to make an impression.
Speaker 10 (33:06):
If you see that graphic, you know it only means
one thing. Scalding hot takes by that guy right there,
Michael F. Florio, Takes that are so hot he needs
to wear sunglasses, which he's literally wearing sunglasses again because
the takes are so hot.
Speaker 6 (33:23):
Florio, start right here, take me through it. What is
your number four hot take?
Speaker 20 (33:30):
Malik Neighbors up the New York Giants is going to
leave the NFL in receiving yards this year. This take
is as hot as out being.
Speaker 8 (33:39):
On the buyout where Neighbors is from. Trust me. I
was there this past weekend. It is scorching.
Speaker 20 (33:44):
But Neighbors last year had the highest target share in
the NFL, and he had twelve hundred yards as a
rookie despite having the ninth highest rate of uncatchable targets.
And look No disrespect to the Giants QB room last year,
but they just simply could not get him the ball
down field. He gets a huge upgrade in that regard
with their new quarterback room.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
He is a great field stretcher.
Speaker 20 (34:06):
It wasn't his fault, but better QB play will help
unlock his ceiling this year, which I think is not
only leading the league in receiving yards, but maybe leading
all receivers in Fantasy points. So make sure to target
Malik Neighbors in the later half of your first rounds.
Speaker 8 (34:22):
I do not think you will regret it.
Speaker 6 (34:24):
You don't need to say no offense to the Giants
QB room. They cleaned it all out anyway. Give me
take number three.
Speaker 8 (34:30):
Devon Hn.
Speaker 20 (34:31):
He will finish as the highest scoring running back. Look
when you think of Miami, you think of beach balls
and beaches, but you should be thinking of the heat
that Davon Hn is going to bring when he finishes
as the RB one this season. Why do I think
that because he pretty much did it last year when
he averaged twenty three Fantasy points per game with Tua,
which would have made him the RB one. He had
(34:53):
more receiving stats than any running back last year as
the Dolphins just abandoned the deep ball and folks on
getting to the ball out of his hands.
Speaker 8 (35:02):
As quickly as possible.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
He is a good receiver and.
Speaker 20 (35:05):
Explosive runner, dominates goal line work, everything you want in
a fantasy running back, and this is the year it
all gets put together. He outscores Saquon and Fijon and Gibbs,
and he finishes as the highest scoring running back in
fantasy and one that you can get in the second round.
Speaker 8 (35:22):
Take neighbors, take a chan. You'll be feeling great.
Speaker 10 (35:26):
Not going to the second round of people keep hearing
you talk about him like that.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Give me take number two, beach.
Speaker 8 (35:32):
Ball guy, justin Fields.
Speaker 20 (35:35):
He finishes as a top three fantasy quarterback this year.
Look ever, walk through a New York City subway station
on a humid day in August. I have this take
is as hot as that Fields. He thrives as an
outside runner, and this is an offense that should feature
plenty of that. I am expecting to see a Fields
(35:55):
version of the Tush push in New York, and I'm
expecting a lot more short and safe. We saw when
he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year and it
was only six games, but if you take that six
games and make it a seventeen game pace, he would
have scored the sixth most fantasy points amongst quarterbacks, and.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
I think he could exceed that this year.
Speaker 20 (36:14):
I think a career year in this new Jets offense
is coming for Justin Fields. And the best part is
you don't gotta pay a top five, top seven QB
price to get him. You can wait and get all
that production anyway.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
Good stuff so far, smoking hot so far.
Speaker 20 (36:30):
Give me number one, Tyler Warren, the rookie finishes as
a top five fantasy tight end.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
This take might be as hot as.
Speaker 8 (36:39):
The Colts QB can't battle.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
But you're gonna hear a lot of stuff.
Speaker 20 (36:43):
About Warren this year, that he has target competition, not
the best quarterback room. You know who you were hearing
about that last year, brock Bowers, when he finishes.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
The tight end one.
Speaker 20 (36:52):
The year before was Sam Laporta, He was the tight
end one. They have proven that in recent years rookie
tight ends can succeed right away, and Warren is a
big target who excels after the catch. Richardson and Jones
are both at their best statistically when they are targeting
the middle of the field, and I think.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Warren will eat there.
Speaker 20 (37:11):
I think he could finish as the Colts' top target
and as a top five tight end in fantasy. But again,
you don't have to pay that price. He barely goes
as a top twelve tight end.
Speaker 8 (37:20):
So wait and still reap the benefits.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
Colson Lovelin being like, what did you know? I was
picked first?
Speaker 10 (37:26):
Anyway, FOURIO great stuff. As always, don't go anywhere. We're
gonna need you this entire season, but thanks fantastic stuff.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
Football is back.
Speaker 10 (37:36):
Celebrated teams across the league take the field from Back
Together Weekend, presented by YouTube TV with two full days
of practices, player interviews, and behind the scenes access.
Speaker 6 (37:46):
It's a can't miss.
Speaker 10 (37:47):
NFL reunion July twenty six and twenty seventh. Go to
NFL dot com slash Back Together Weekend for more information.
You gonna have plenty of cowboys for that Back Together
other weekend.
Speaker 6 (38:00):
We got plenty of cowboys today.
Speaker 10 (38:02):
We had our Cowboys superstar Jane Slater Cowboys practice today.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
She will tell you everything she knows.
Speaker 7 (38:10):
Coming on back.
Speaker 12 (38:19):
Dallas Cowboys on the practice field in Oxnard, California for
their very first practice of the twenty twenty five training camp.
There is Brian Chottenheimer, the new head coach. We got
to see a little bit of Dak Prescott on this day.
We know that Michael Parsons is at training camp. We'll
see exactly what he does during training camp as negotiations
(38:42):
toward his next contract continue, and post it up with
the Cowboys, as she so often is, is our very
own Jane Slater Live in Oxnard, Okay, Jane. This was
also George Pickens's first practice with the Dallas Cowboys of
training camp or your impressions.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
Well, Judy, when I'm out here at training camp, I
try to sit next to people that are smarter than me,
which is why Ian and I typically roam separate.
Speaker 19 (39:06):
I'm kidding, but.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
Today I was sitting next to Brian brought us and
Brad Sham. Brian brought us a former scout, Brad Sham,
who is the voice the Dallas Cowboy's been covering these
camps since nineteen eighty three. They both picked up on
the fact that Brian Schottenheimer looks like he's using tighter formation,
so that should be exciting to the football nerds, but
I noticed a lot of premotion snaps. That's something that
(39:28):
he promised when he took the job. I know that
something that also excites our nerdier football fans.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
But it's what he.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
Said about, or at least teased about, what he's gonna
use George Pickens in this scheme. Here's what he had
to say.
Speaker 21 (39:43):
His ability to track a football is uncanny. You can't
watch a guy play the deep ball and be like, okay,
that's just different. So when he's not doubled, he's really open,
and so I think that's something we're getting used to
with him. He's been great with our ability to move
him around. You know, it's been different. You know, we
think to maximize him. He can't just play one spot.
You know, he can't just play an ex We're going
(40:04):
to move him around. He's been great with that. He's
excited about that because he and CD need to be interchangeable.
But the instincts are also uncanny, just for finding zones
and you know, the ability to sit in windows that
maybe some people don't see. But the number one thing
that jumps out at me would be the ability to
track the deep ball, because it is uncanny.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Schottenheimer was asked, how does the Pickens acquisition help dak
and he stated the obvious. He said, if you look
at this offense last year, there weren't a lot of
explosive plays, not a lot of explosive plays and the
run game or the passing game. What this does is
Pickens gives you a little bit of playbook variety, also
giving us a little variety. This is now two camps
that I've seen them hand the ball off to Cavante Turpin.
(40:48):
They're wide receiver, the speedster.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Might they use.
Speaker 3 (40:51):
Him in the run game this year? We'll have to see.
Speaker 19 (40:56):
Jane, thank you.
Speaker 12 (40:57):
I'm sure we will be hearing much more from you
about the Dallas cop in the coming days.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
Twenty six teams reporting to training camp today, only one
of them with their star receiver making all like Mario
kart Hoopinakua showing up in interesting fashion for the Rams
did not dye his hair. Leave that to offensive lineman
Kevin Dotson coming in and looking more like a Ram
than the logo that's on his shirt that actually looks
(41:25):
more like a rampart right there. Juan Brisker apol into
the Bears training camp, made with AI. Now it's allan
Iverson stepping over everyone to get into Hellis Hold today.
And aboute Smith. Can we get the man a bell boy?
Can we get him some help?
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Thank you?
Speaker 1 (41:44):
Yeah, there it is. He should not have to. He's
not gonna say this. Don is not small, but he's
not the biggest guy. We don't need him with the
double decker lane Johnson wants to carry five different boxes.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Mike, I say, hey at it. Let's give the wide
receiver just a little.
Speaker 11 (41:58):
Bit help, just maybe applying for the days at Reggie Wayne,
the veteran wide receiver for the Colts, who just had
great interesces every year. One day the Indy, one year
the Indy car. He had a military entrance, he had
a helicopter entrance. Reggie Wayne was the king of the
training camp arrival.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Thinking about you today, Reggie, Judy your favorite entry.
Speaker 12 (42:21):
I remember when the Jets we trained at Ostra and
the players stayed in the dorms. They used to like
come in with TVs, pillows, fans, And I remember Vinny
Testa Verity pulled up one you're in a bentley and
then unloaded all of his stuff from the bentley.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Mean, I'm sure your story was great too, but we're
out of time. Two more teams Fountains of Steelers in tomorrow.
We're back at seven pm time. Thanks for watching see
it
